The public is welcome and will be served hot cider and coffee. You will enjoy it so if you live near Temple, make an attempt to visit the SPJST Museum.

November 10-December 25, 1990 The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting November 10 through December 25, 1990.

-SPJST-

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

District VI Seminars Held In El Campo-Hillje and Shiner The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in El Campo-Hilljeand Shiner.

SFR Jerome J. Hlavaty, with the as­ sistance of District VI Director Matt S. Vanek, Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, Home Office Per­ sonnel Kathy Fritz and Ruth Hanusch, conducted the seminars designed to promote advanced insight into the modem types of insurance and how they meet SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but, to better serve the membership, the SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

The SPJST State Volleyball Tournament was held on Saturday, November 17, State Field Representative .Jerome J. 1990 at Temple City Gym. There were seven teams representing four districts that were present. Also a large number of spectators were on hand who cheered Hlavaty conducts the seminar. on the players. They all experienced a day of fast-paced competition and friendly rivalry.

Fraternal Council was held on November 20 with many of our mem­ bers present. Their Christmas Party was set for December 10 at 7 p.m. at Lodge No. 84. Canned goods or money in lieu of canned goods were requested · .:.:·:.:·" · . · .•·. ~lf..~i for needy organizations. Lodge No. 130 was asked to bring desserts.

Motion was made and passed that we go to direct billing on premiums. A letter will be sent to all members, along with notice that local dues will be raised to $5 annually due to in­ creased costs.

On November 28th, we had our chili supper which was well attended.

My wife, Evelyn, and I had two Thanksgiving days this year; one on November 19th we had Thanksgiving dinner supper with our son, Michael and his wife, Donna and their two sons, Charles and Matthew plus we celebrated Charles' 12th birthday; then on Wednesday they left to move to Mondon, North Dakota.

Michael works for Amoco Oil Com­ pany, they transferred him from Texas City to Mondon. Evelyn and I will miss them because they lived close by'.

One project that sticks to my mind is the Presidential Ball we had in April. .Needless to say, it was a huge success!

Charolette Roland came up with a beautiful setting of a carousel back­ ground and, folks, it was beautiful.

I took a lot of pictures with many of .our members and I gave pictures to each couple and only had one left.

This one, more or less, gives an idea of how it looked.

We also installed two air-con­ ditioners in early spring. Thanks go to Mr. Hughes for financing this project.

Our members and guests of each dance really help out with their dona­ tions toward our Scholarship Fund, Air-Conditioner Fund, and Foyer Fund. Folks, it is really gratifying to see how all the people participate and help with these projects.

Our last two dances in December are 22, 1990 (finger food will be fur­ nished) and our New Year's Eve dance on December 31, 1990 (also finger food will be furnished and, at mid­ night, blackeyed peas and cornbread).

Don't forget to tell your friends and co-workers about our scholarship bas­ ketball game on January 24, 1991. Our lodge is again sponsoring the Marques Haynes Basketball Team to raise funds for the Scholarship Fund. The game will be held at Angelina College Gym so mark your calendar now; you will be hearing more on this event. Tickets will be $4 for adults and $3 for stu­ dents. Ken Roland has already set up a number of schools for Haynes and his team to put on an exhibition and talk to the youngsters about how proud it is to be DRUG FREE! In closing, my lovely wife, Seale, and I would like to wish all SPJST a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Lodge No. 196, Houston-West Christmas Party Members and guests of Lodge Jed­ nota No. 196, Houston-West gathered at the Katy VFW Hall on Sunday after­ noon, December 2 at 2 p.m. for their quarterly meeting and Christmas Party.

After being welcomed by President Zdenek Nedbalek, the group recited the pledge to the U.S. flag.

Secretary Brenda Pike read the minutes of the prevíoui meeting which were approved as read.

Nine new members were added to the roster.

The first quarterly meeting of 1991 will be on January 13, 1991 at 2 p.m . at the Kathy VFW. The District V meeting will be hosted by Lodge No. 196 and will take place on March 10, 1991 also at Katy VFW. More news on this event will be forthcoming.

Election of officers was held with Vice President Melba Gaydosik serv­ ing as chairperson. Officers re-elected for 1991 are: President--Zdenek Nedbalek, Sr. Vice President--Melba Gaydosik Secretary=Brenda Pike Treasurer--Evelyn Mikeska Reporter=Alice Musil Ginger Petter will be the youth leader of our newly-organized youth club. Officers were installed by Dis­ trict V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton.

We were honored to have with us visitors from Sealy, from Lodge 88, and the Nedbálek's relatives from Czechoslovakia.

Roast turkey and dressing, ham and a variety of salads and desserts brought by members were enjoyed by all. The · hall was beautifully decorated for I Christmas by the Petter children and delightfully pleasant music served as a background for all the good eating, and visiting. A truly good time was had by all present.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge No. 130, Dallas Youth Club Our past meeting and activity was our Christmas Party held on Sunday, December 9 at 4 p.m.

It was celebrated together with the mother lodge. The children drew names and exchanged gifts around the tree. The adults brought a new un­ wrapped toy to be givento the needy.

The youth club made punch and goodies for the afternoon. The lodge provided the meat and all members were asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert.

The youth club met at the hall at 3 p.m, to pick out a live Christmas tree and decorate it for the party. All mem­ bers were invited to come join the celebration.

Sister Marek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84, St. Pius Catholic Church in Dallas and KJZT, Dallas.

Survivors include daughter, Cecilia Gallia and son-in-law, August Gallia of Mesquite, Texas; two brothers, Henry Matus of West and Ed Matus of Waco; one sister, Agnes Hanak of West; one granddaughter, Connie Malek of Paradise and three great­ grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Kotch Funeral Home Chapel by Msgr. George Doskocil.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 2 p.m. on Sunday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, West, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, West, Texas.

Pallbearers were Raymond Matus, Harry Matus, Raymond Marek, Cy Marek, Richard Hlavenka and Wilburn Matus.

May our departed sister rest in eter­ nal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister VLAST A ODSTRCIL, 75, who died Thursday, April 12, 1990 in University Hills Nursing Home in Bryan, Texas.

Funeral services for Vlasta Helen Odstrcil of Caldwell were held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 13 in New Tabor Brethren Church with Pastor Rev. John Baletka and Rev. Henry E. Beseda of­ ficiating. Interment was in New Tabor Cemetery.

Born June 28, 1914 in Caldwell, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Adolph Garbs and Lydia Matelda Machan Garbs.

She was a lifelong resident of Bur­ leson County except for two years during World War II when her hus­ band, Rudolph, worked for Dow Chemical in Freeport.

She was a devoted housewife and mother of three boys. She liked gar­ dening, growing flowers, playing "42," dancing and sewing. She enjoyed visit­ ing friends and family. In 1978, her husband, Rudolph entered Leisure Lodge in Caldwell.

In 1980, Mrs. Odstrcil's health began to fail and she joined her husband there in February 1980. Mr. Odstrcil died July 5, 1985. They were married March 24, 1931 in Caldwell. She was a member of New Tabor Brethren Church.

Survivors include three sons, Hubert Odstrcil and wife Dolores of Colum­ bus, Jerry Odstrcil of Schulenburg, David Odstrcil and wife Emilie of Col­ lege Station; two brothers, Jacob (Jake) Garbs of Caldwell and Robert Garbs of Milano; two sisters, Lydia Mais of Caldwell and Viola Wheat of Houston and four grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin and Adolph Garbs.

Serving as pallbearers were Chris Odstrcil, grandson; Robert F. Mc­ Crory, grandson-in-law; John Garbs, Robert Garbs, Jeff Garbs, Adrian Carlson, nephews; and family friend, Bryon Shephard.

Arrangements were by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Features Celebration of Marie Nesuda's 99th

Birthday What an extraordinary day it was!

November 2, 1990 marked a very spe­ cial day for a very special lady. Mary Petr Nesuda celebrated her 99th birthday with friends and family at her home in the Juliette Fowler Retirement Village. Cake, ice cream and punch were enjoyed by all. There to help her celebrate, were her . son and daughter­ in-law, Milton and Marian Nesuda; Charlie and Wanda Petr and granddaugher, Leslie Kay Sims, Emil and Bessie Nesuda, Emil and Mary Catherine Mancell, Georgie Brozek, Emil Brozek, Bob and Anne Zvolanek, Annie Carpenter, Helen Vrla, Sr. and Rose Ann Parma.

Mary Petr Nesuda was born in Hambry, Bohemia on November 2, 1891 to Frank and Annie Petr. She came to America as an infant in 1892 with her parents, two sisters and a brother. They entered through Galves­ ton, Texas and settled in the Creech­ ville community outside Ennis, Texas, where she attended school.

Mary married Will A. Nesuda on August 27, 1916 and the newlyweds moved to Dallas, shortly thereafter, to make their home and raise their family of three children, Milton Nesuda of Dallas, Ella Nachtigal of Canoga Park, California .. and Albert Nesuda of Alexandria, Virginia. She has two AUGUST 27, 1916 grandchildren, Mary Ann Nesuda WILL A. NESUDA AND MARY PETR NESUDA White residing in Fort Worth, Texas and Michael Nesuda of Virginia, presently attending Princeton Uníver­ síty. She has two great-grandchildren, Lee Ann White, a senior at Baylor University and David White, a sophomore at Texas A&M University.

As a newly-married couple, Mary and Will were among the earliest members of SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130 in Dallas. Sister Nesuda has been a member for over 70 years, and has been a member of the Circle of Czech Women for over 50 years. During World War II she served as a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross and continued as a volunteer after­ wards, earning a 25-year service pin for her efforts.

At the age of 97, Sister Nesuda out­ lived her insurance life expectancy and was presented with a paidout life in­ surance check by District III Director Sid Pokladník. She was also presented with· a framed Resolution from the Supreme Lodge in recognition of her many years as a member of Lodge Jaro No. 130. Local officers, their wives and friends attended the party in hei home on January 26, 1989.

Sister Nesuda is in excellent health, and in true Czech heritage, enjoys all food placed in front of her. She walks to the dining room with aid of her walker and then returns to her room.

She is still very much the lovely woman she has been all her life, and enjoys visiting with her many friends who drop by to visit. We are all look­ ing forward to her next birthday and plan to celebrate in grand style. But until that time, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SISTER NESUDAI We are all very proud to know you.

Maminka se nezlobila. Dala. každému utěrku -- a hnedle byli všichni' zabráni prací. Strýček zpíval veselé písničky, maminka s ním, jako za starých časů, když byli ještě malou Haničkou a Vilíkem, jako ti dva malí caparti dnes -- a najednou povídá strýček: "Vida, plná kuchyň sluneční záře!"

Za chvilku byla svačina: potom vzal strýček hromadu starých novin, do půlky listu vystřihl díry pro oči, nos a ústa, přivázal noviny dětem i sobě na obličej; sám hrál kmotra Škrholu, Hana dělala Fausta a VilíkKašpárka -­ nasmáli se všichni i s maminkou dost a dost -- až tu byl večer.

Po večeři maminka zašívala kdesi jakési díry a dírky a Hanu posadil strýček ke stolu s knížkou. Četla jim příběh o zajíčkovi, jak v travinách veseleběhal za svojí zaječí maminkou.

Všem bylo, jakoby seděli v lese a sami se dívali na zajíčkovy příběhy.

"Tak co, slečno Mračilko?" ptal se strýček, když Hanička dočtla, "Umíme nebo neumíme vyrábět sluneční zář?"

"Jen když chceme!" přiznala Hanička.

Bylo tam jen pět lidí.

Polepšeme se s nejmenujme věčně Když jsem šla nedávno nakoupit, jenom pět lidí, nejmenujme žádného a potkala jsem stařenku. Byla celá zvláště ne toho, který toho nejméně ohnutá a sotva šla. Když jsem přišla zasluhuje! blíž, viděla jsem, že nese plný košík dříví. Každou chvilku odpočívala a nemohla s ním nikam. Hned mě napadlo, že bych jí měla pomoci.

Přiskočila jsem k ní a košík jsem jí říkadlo, vzala. Bránila se a nechtěla mi ho dát, ale potom přece svolila. Košík jsem jí Byl jednou jeden král, donesla až do domu. Babička mi tolik ten princeznu miloval, děkovala, že to ani za to nestálo. Byla ta princezna ráda zelí asi ráda, že jsem jí pomohla. I mě to -- a už je to celý. těšilo.

Od rána pršelo. Malá Hanička plakala, že bude musit celý den ztrávit doma. Celý den bude zkažený, sluníčko se ani neukáže!

"Nuže, uděláme si sami sluneční zář," řekl strýček Jakub.

"Jak to mluvíš, strýčku," zasmála se Hanička. "Což máš továrnu na sluneční zář?" "Ó ano, jen se ke mně dej za společníka," řekl strýček. "Hned ti povím recept: Předně nemyslina to, že mohlo svítit slunce, za druhé uvažuj, kolik jiných věcí by tě mohlo mimo slunečnízář potěšit, a za třetí se přičiň, aby bylo ostatním lidem s tebou veselo."

Ostatní lidé -- to je malý Vilouš; seděl v koutku a plakal, protože Hana byla mrzutá a nechtěla si s ním hrát.

Vzala tedy stavebnici, stavěli, zapomněli, že venku prší -- a hnedle je volala maminka k obědu.

"Tak vidíš, jak umíš vyrábět sluneční zář " řekl při obědě strýček, "bylo jí d~st pro vás oba na celé dopoledne."

"Ano, řekla Hana kysele, "ale co budeme dělat celé odpoledne? Teď jsme mohli jít pěkně na procházku a... " "A __,, řekl strýček, "tamhle má maminka umytou celou hromadu nádobí. Mohli bychom jí pomoci utírat." )J~v
