Think about giving a lasting-gift this year for Christmas or birthday! *** This issue of Vestnik is dated Wed nesday, November 21st, the date the "Vision '90" Sweepstakes ends (the dates of the contest were May 1 to November 21, 1990). If we look at the minutes printed in last week's Vestnik(November 14 second column, page 3) SL Vice President Gebala's Old Business Matters Vision'90 Report, we find that, as of October 9, 1990, "Out of 214 leads, 92 applications."

Your editor sensed a feeling of disappointment in Vice President Gebala's reporting- of this--a rather small amount of leads for the large amount of members we have in our Society!

The editor agrees and feels the same way--this was a "contest" for all of our members to be able to participate in and enter to help our SPJST gain members and win some very valuable prizes at the same time!

Our Supreme Lodge Board decided to have this contest so that our overall membership would and could participate and, in that way, feel that we ALL are a part of our fraternal organization, and we hope that there were many more leads by the November 21st deadline. Just think--our Society gains members by this contest and some members will win some valuable prizes, at the same time. Our wishes and congratulations to all at this time. *** Enthusiasm---A real factor in success which dares not be overlooked is enthusiasm. It is a Greek derivative.

The dictionary defines "enthusiasm" as--inspired by a divine power, a state of impassioned emotion, having an ardent and imaginative zeal or interest, and a manifestation for joy. The Greeks realized that anyone having this quality or emotion had, what seemed to them, a divine spark or power which differentiated him from

their leader. Enthusiasm prompts leadership. It is not at all difficult to acquire enthusiasm. First we must sincerely and honestly become convinced that the service we are offering is absolutely "tops," that our SPJST is truly the finest life insurance organization in the business. If we have an earnest and commendable devotion, an intense and eager interest in our work, then we have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm, deeply rooted, grows greater and greater and is its own energy producing dynamo.

Enthusiasm is the most convincing oration. The simplest man fired with enthusiasm is far more persuasive than the most eloquent man without it. But one must be appreciated in order to be enthusiastic.

All work and no play makes "Jack a dull boy" is an old and timely saying.

But, work must be appreciated and the worker given credit and a bit of honest praise occasionally. Nothing is ever lost by a "thank you"; nothing is gained by ignoring the work and effort of an honest employee if we are honest employers out for success! *** Thanksgiving Day 1990 is a day designated as a holiday which, history has it, began with the Pilgrims as a thanks for living through the previous year with its trials and tribulations.

Now, of course, we have things we can be grateful for, especially our health and ability to look forward to the future.

On TV a person was askea recently what he was most thankful for and the answer was: "I'm most thankful that I'm still alive!" There is much truth in that, also. If we can make this world a better place to live in, we can be that much more thankful-how true!

FrOm our office, we wish all of our members and friends a very healthy, happy and satisfactory Thanksgiving Day in the midst of your loved ones.

That will not be possible for our servicemen and servicewomen who are now in the troublesome Middle East area, Saudi Arabia! We wish them the best!

Just think--a few years ago, President Gorbachev of Russia surprised the whole world when he appeared at the United Nations and, in his speech, announced that Russia will withdraw many troops from Eastern Europe unilaterally and spend more money for food and less on armament.

The whole world agreed and then followed suit, and the "cold war" ended. For how long? Here we are on the "brink of war," again, in Saudi Arabia! Will mankind ever learn?

Let us be thankful that war has not started, yet! Let us live with faith ,and hope that all can be settled diplomatically and peacefully.

During World War II, a noted gentleman made this statement: "It is always better to jaw, jaw (talk) than to wah, wah, wah (war) meaning to talk rather than fight." Much truth in that! *** The ordinary American does not assume the duty to remain in the position in which he was born. He assumes as a part of his inheritance that he will have the right continually to go forward. *** Make it a point to do something every day that you don't want to do.

This is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.

SEMINAR HELD AT LODGE NO. 1, FAYETTEVILLE

Seminars Held In District I The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Fayetteville and New Tabor.

SFM Gene McBride, with the assistance of District I Director Andrew Vavra, conducted the seminars designed to promote advanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they meet SPJST members' needs more fully. SL Vice President Bernard

Gebala was also in attendance and assisted with the sales' presentation.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting on November 4 with all officers present, except FAC Bud Petty.

Auditing Committee reported that the books were all in good standing.

On November 17, New Tabor will be defending their title in volleyball.

Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek reported the youth club had a hayride and wiener roast to celebrate Halloween, with good attendance.

Glen Paul brought the "traveling trophy" he won at Taylor last month in "42." Glen will keep the trophy for a year and return next year to defend his title and to bring it home, again. Congratulations, Glen, you did a great job.

Our Memorial Dinner is planned for December 1, 1990. The program will start at 5:30 p.m. and the meal should start at 6:00 p.m. The Rev. John Baletka will be our guest speaker. Members, we will be remembering this year are: Chris Travis, Emilie Vavra, Glenda York, Hynek Hejl, John T. Sefcik, Henry Mikulastik and Lancier C. Wolz.

Hosted Its First Local Lodge No. 29 Progressive "42" Tournament Taylor

SPJST Lodge No. 29 held its first Progressive "42" Tournament on Saturday, October 20, 1990. The play started at 9:15 a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m. A delicious barbecue dinner was catered by Glen Henderson Catering of Circleville, Texas.

There were only 16 players but the group enjoyed a very fraternal day.

Most of the players started out the day with some doubt as to whether they would enjoy playing progressive "42," but by day's end there were a lot of smiles on the faces of those attending; even those players who were on the short side of winning had some real

Glen Paul and Louis Schwartz were tied for first place with 10 wins each.

First place was awarded to Glen Paul by virtue of the first tie breaker: Glen had a total of 114 marks for the day compared to a close second by Louis Schwartz with 107 marks. Edith Shiller and Frances Schimecek were also tied with 9 wins each, but Edith was awarded third place via the tie breaker with 115 marks to Frances' 112 marks.

Special thanks go to State FAC Frank Klinkovsky for all his help and to Irma Klinkovsky for helping with keeping the score and cleaning up in the kitchen.

SPJST Lodge No. 49 held its fourth quarterly meeting Wednesday, November 7 in the SPJST lodge hail.

President Elizabeth Walther brought the meeting to order at approximately 6:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited in unison, w:-„:4..h was followed by a moment of silence for departed members.

Eight members were present in spite of the inclement weather. The president, vice president, secretary, and financial secretary were present.

Correspondence read included a thank you note from the Ed Janca family for the memorial to the Building Fund.

Scholarship donations were tabled until spring.

Beverly Teplicek moved that Eddie Mae Huebner be elected "Fraternalist of the Year." The motion passed.

Each year Lodge No. 49 remembers four rest homes with Christmas gifts, namely, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes No. I and No. II, also two rest homes in Ballinger: Cantabury Villa and Ballinger Nursing Center. James Teplicek moved, we purchase tube sox to keep the residents' feet warm. Beverly Teplicek seconded the motion and motion passed.

President Walther introduced Connie Havlak, wife of Harvey Havlak, as a new member and new youth leader.

Connie Havlak and Brad Teplicek won the door prizes. Both donated the money to the Birthday Fund.

The president displayed the new fire extinguisher purchased for the hall. It was suggested that the lodge buy another one in conjunction with the large one the hall had, so that there would be the newer models. James Teplicek moved we purchase it so that there would be one in the kitchen and one in the bar. Emil Havlak seconded the motion and it passed.

Our next meeting will be February 6, 1991 in the lodge hall. President Walther adjourned the meeting and served a delicious beef stew with freshlybaked bread, served with butter, and Eddie Mae Huebner brought a luscious chocolate cake for dessert.

Someone with a birthday in October, November or December will win a birthday cake baked by Millie Kutac.

Door prizes will be drawn.

The Christmas Party will consist of exchanging gifts. The price range is $2.00 - $2.25, again. There will be separate boxes for men, women and children. Please label your gift so we know which box it will go in.

Liquid refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon, courtesy of the lodge. Members are asked to bring a dessert or sweet for serving with the meal or with coffee in the afternoon.

You do not have to bring a side dish.

Please note the change in date (December 2nd) and the change in time (12 noon). Youth Club -- Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported meetings were taking place and the juniors were making napkin holders for the 70th party; also parts for Christmas program are being passed out, and favors for the dinner trays at Scotish Rite Hospital are being made. District III will have an overnight lock-in Friday, followed by a trip to Holiday-in-the-Park on Saturday.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meets November 20 here hosted by SPJST; please help with the dessert if you can.

On December 10 Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council Christmas Party which will be hosted by the council again at our lodge; members are requested to bring pastry, our contribution for the dinner.

Another Christmas Party coming on December 16th. Our lodge will furnish the ham and bread, but you are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert; also canned food to be donated to the needy at the Brady Center should be brought when you come to the SPJST Lodge 84 Christmas Party-Social starting at 5 p.m.

The Czech Culture meets at our lodge on November 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Remember, our next dance on December 1 with Eddie Ray Band. Our lodge will be decorated for the Christmas season--it's beautiful.

December 15 -- Christmas Dance; music by The Centex Band No doubt we will see you at the New Year's Eve Dance--if you reserve your favorite table, it's $8 per adult and $3 per teen (13-17). After December 26 purchased at door, the price for the dance will be $10 per adult and $3.50 per teen. The Czech Harvesters will furnish the great music to keep you on the dance floor from 8:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Our Czech Day 80th Anniversary on October 28, 1990 was one of the greatest. We had a terrific crowd due to good advertising and communication throughout our area You can always run into lots of competition, which we did, but it didn't seem to matter.

We had a most delicious turkey dinner; the pastry was superb, only not enough because Lillie Spies had to shut the booth at 3:00 p.m. I hope next time you ladies, who didn't bring any will double-up. Many thanks to all

who brought such wonderful cakes and desserts.

Our program was delightful; Tim Kostorn, the director of the Choral Group always performs so well in fact, the Choral Group was better than ever; the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra accompanied the Choral Group, which was beautiful music to all of us.

At 2:00 p.m. Crystal Wallace and the Migl twins, Darlene and Marlene, presented the colors, and Helen Hegwood sang The Star Spangled Banner and Kde Domov Muj accompanied on the piano by Naomi Spencer.

Next was our own Donna Schnell with a beautiful piano performance.

There is lots of skill in playing the piano as she did. It requires many hours of practice and understanding and good instructors. We hope you'll play, again, soon. Donna was followed by the Czech Folk Dancers of West; their most capable director is Maggie Grmela. This is a dance that requires plenty of energy, even with the airconditioning, the group was so hot. We enjoyed having the Sefcik boys with us. It reminded me when I was young Donna Schnell doing a rendition of and danced a lot without air-condition- several original Czech compositions.

HERE IS ANOTHER LIVELY DANCE performed by the Czech Folk Dancers of West bought at any price. We hope to see you again next year on Czech Day. NOW, the cutest thing were the Sokol gymnasts with Director Charlie Petrzelka. When those little "fellers" and girls came out on the dance floor to do their act, your heart would melt.

They are far from perfection but well on their way. They all had on their red uniforms--how cute. Can't you just visualize?

The final act was the Parade of Costumes, which then turned into a dance with Vrazels playing.

There was a great deal of hard work involved by some of our faithful members.

On Saturday, November 3, 1990 we had a most beautiful wedding at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Houston, when Paige Renee Grady and Edward Lee Stonaker were united in Holy Matrimony. Paige is the daughter of Mrs. Peggy Grady and the late Dan Grady. Edward Lee (Eddie) is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stonaker.

The reception followed the ceremony at the Polish Hall. After a delicious chicken barbecue, a dance followed.

Everyone had a delightful time. We wish Paige and Eddie a long and happy marriage.

I visited with Grandma Hanka and she was doing very well. On December 15, the Lodge 88 Choral Group will go to Needville to entertain those dear old people, who just crave for entertainment.

Mrs. Janette Raymond called me to let me know she's a great-grandma again. Don and Annette Tamborello recently had a little boy, Phillip Michael, born to them. Tony, his little brother, was there to meet them when they came home from the hospital.

Dear Members and Friends: Last few days it seemed like summer but it will not last long.

It was a pleasant day for our meeting with a nice attendance, however, we like to have more members, especially, the younger members. We need them to start learning how to keep up the fraternal work and also to be aware of how to take care of the lodge building and other things Maybe the young members don't read the Vestnik, so, the older members who attend, need to expresss our thoughts to our young members; here in our lodge, we have many things for the members.

We have good meals and free drinks for our members at each meeting and also at our game nights; you can enjoy free snacks and drinks, so you see we do a lot of fraternal work which helps our lodge as well as our Supreme Lodge to stay in the non-profit category.

—SPJSTNovember is our election of officers for the 1991 year and we hope the Lodge elected officers will continue to do the best they can. There were some changes made; to the outgoing members, Once again, Lodge No. 88 intends to we thank them for their work well award a $500.00 scholarship to a done. On October 24th we held our regular monthly meeting with a large crowd attending.

Brother Jerry Dressler, the president, opened our meeting in Czech and English, and asked 2nd Vice President Alvin Sefcik to lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, also a moment of silent prayer was held for our deceased brothers and sisters The secretary had roll call; all officers were there, except 1st Vice President Bobbye Johnson (absent on vacation).

Brother Dressler introduced our guest, Brother Howard Leshikar, president of the Supreme Lodge SPJST; Brother Frank Klinkovsky, State FAC of Supreme Lodge; Brother Louis Hanus, District VI director; Sister Helen Hegwood, District V field sales representative; Sister Marie Stayton, District V youth counselor; and her husband, A.J. Stayton. Brother Dressler thanked them for coming and said he would call on them later for their reports.

Secretary Lillia Mae Peter read the minutes of our September meeting; the minutes were approved as read. rother Dressler called on Treasurer Tinnie Walla to give her report, which was a good report.

Then all the committees also gave their reports, which everyone wanted to hear. Thanks to all committees for their 800 work.

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 21, 1990 presented Brother Joe Krenek a plaque for being elected "Fraternalist of the Year 1990," for Lodge No. 172.

Then he gave his report and the members enjoyed listening because it was the first time for lots of the members to see and hear the president of the Supreme Lodge SPJST. Thank you, Brother Howard, and come see us, again.

Brother Louis Hanus gave his report that was good to hear and some good humor.

Sister Helen Hegwood gave us a good sales' pitch, also congratulated Sister Vickie Dressler for her outstanding sales for September and October.

Sister Marie Stayton talked on the youth program plus the need for the youth program, she also congratulated Leslie Watkins for the outstanding youth of Lodge No. 172.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky said he was glad to be present and his first time at Lodge No. 172, also to meet all the people. (Frank was busy taking pictures.)

Thank you all for coming because the members were glad ato see you and hear from you. This is good for our SPJST Society for officers to visit lodges and talk to members; this way they get to see the officers, and hear from you what SPJST is all about.

Brother Dressler said our next meeting will be November 28th at 7:30 p.m., but before the meeting, we will have a chili supper. Our lodge will furnish the chili and members are to provide a covered dish (salad, bread or pastry) which will start about 6:00 p.m., so come out and enjoy the food and fellowship.

Door prize was won by Sister Vlasta Machann and we were glad to see her who is doing all right after heart surgery and also Brother Joe Machann.

We wish both of you good health.

The meeting adjourned. Cake, cookies, coffee and punch were served and everybody enjoyed it, especially the fellowship.

Since our meeting, we found out that Brother Johnnie and Sister Esther Mikeska were in a car wreck. Then at our Czech Festival they were there doing all right; sure glad both of you are dong O.K. and take care.

On October 29th District V sales representatives had our sales seminar at Lodge 88 presented by Sister Helen Hegwood. We had a surprise because Brother VP Bernie Gebala brought Sister Kathy Fritz and Ruth Hanusch from the insurance office to the seminar; this was another first, the sales representatives got to see them in person for the first time and the same for Kathy and Ruth to meet and see the sales representatives in person for the first time. This was a good education for the sales representatives. Thanks to SPJST Supreme Lodge for your good work.

On November 3rd and 4th, the Pasadena Gulf Coast Czech Festival had a good attendance both days, even though it rained and got cold Sunday.

Thanks to all who helped to put this Czech Festival together.

Choral Club News

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Bur-Mont Nursing Home was the place we entertained on Tuesday, October 30th. They had the place all decorated for Halloween._

We had a wonderful audience and they seemed to really enjoy our singing.

Those of the group present were Helen Janacek (president and director), Ralph Milek (accordionist), Emily Stuteville, Vallie Zavodny, Agnes Schiller, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Martha Klusacek, Albina Mikeska, Georgia Sodek, Dorothy Pechal and also Dorothy Tomasek helped us sing.

I hope I didn't omit anyone because I didn't write the names down and I am going by recollection, only.

Those at the nursing home stated that we should come back before Christmas, so we have to decide the next time we meet.

It was so nice to see Sister Annie Jakubec to come hear us entertain and we sang "Zela nasa Anicka," especially for her. She was our song leader and director for many years.

We visited a few of the residents who we know and made many new friends, too.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 27th starting at 6:30 p.m. with a covered dish supper.

We are inviting all former members to come join us for this Christmas Party. There is NOT going to be the usual gift exchange just fellowship and good food. Bring your favorite dish and we will have a feast as we always do. Everyone make plans to be present for a good time. We may even get the songbooks out for a sing-song or sing Christmas songs.

Here's hoping you all enjoy the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays with your families.

of Runnels-Concho-Tom Green Counties To Meet CHS

The Czech Heritage Society of Runnels, Concho, Tom Green of the Concho Valley will hold its fourth quarterly meeting November 25, 1990 in the SPJST Hall in Rowena at 2:30 p.m.

Election of officers for 1991 will be held at this time. Mr. Stefan Vitez of San Angelo will show slides of Czechoslovakia and give a talk on the country.

As a brief resume of the year; at our February meeting, we had a fund-raising event in the form of a Chinese auction.

In May, Elizabeth Walther, our Runnels County director, gave a report on the State Czech Historical meeting in Temple, Texas.

Mr. Vitez was the featured speaker of our local meeting. Twenty-two members attended our August meeting.

Mr. Lamar Kopecky of San Angelo was elected to be our historian.

Through the year, Mr. Louis Kokes, vice president, has been giving us publicity in parades in surrounding towns with the sign he made for our Heritage Society.

President Robert Mikeska, our enthusiastic chairman, deserves credit for keeping our Society functioning as well as do all our loyal members.

Dear Readers, November 3, 1990 was the date set aside for the garage sale for Lodge 142 Houston Youth Club. It was a beautiful day for the sale. They had a lot of people and customers came out. They made almost $300.00. They wish to thank all the people who donated to their garage sale which was so successful.

On November 10, 1990 the District V youth and several chaperones set out for the Amtrack train ride from Houston to Galveston. We boarded the train for the 9 a.m. departure and arrived in Galveston at 11:30 a.m. By that time everyone was hungry so we all walked to the Hills Restaurant to eat. After lunch we walked through the Strand and headed out for Bishop's Palace. It was a nice walk and a beautiful day.

Afterwards, we walked down to the beach. Eveyone seemed to enjoy that, too. By this time we took the trolley back to the Strand when there was a lot of entertainment going on. We all ate supper and it was just about time to head back to the train for our return trip.

We took the 9:30 p.m. train back to Houston and arrived home about 11:30 p.m. It was a fun-filled day enjoyed by all.

The November 7, 1990 meeting of Lodge No. 25 Youth Club was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by President Brian Holland.

Jarod Hunter led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The register was read. There were eleven members, one guest and three adults present.

The secretary read the minutes of our last meeting. There were no corrections or additions. The minutes were approved as read.

New members welcomed were Michael and Jason Fowler, Jarod Hunter, Brandon Nichols, Chad and Clint Scroggins.

We discussed going to the District HI Slumber Party and Holiday-in-the-Park on November 30th and December 1st.

Our Lodge No. 25, along with RVOS No. 51, is going to have our Christmas Party on December 2 starting at 4 p.m.

Each family is asked to bring a pastry.

Santa Claus will be there to give goodies to the good boys and girls.

Everyone young and old is welcome to come.

The president adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m. All members stayed to play tag after our meeting.

The November 8, 1990 meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club was held at 7 p.m. in the Thomas Edison Room at WCEC. Flag Bearer Jared Dybala led the pledge.

Secretary Martha Bartos read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were corrected and approved.

Treasurer Danny Borak was absent, so Sharon Borak called the roll and collected dues.

Five members and five adults were in attendance for the meeting; in addition, Kevin Dluhos was a guest.

Under old business, we discussed the District VI Social which was held on October 28 in Sweet Home. Members who attended gave reports on the successful day.

Under new business, plans were made for our Christmas Party. It will be held on December 7 at 7 p.m. in the SPJST Hall in FLU*. Members will exchange gifts. They will also bring toys to be donated to the Jaycees' "Toys for Tots" program.

The Christmas Party for the adult lodge will be held on December 9, also at SPJST Hall in Hillje. Attending members will have a ticket booth.

On December 15, our club will attend the morning performance of El Campo High School's Kiddie Play entitled "Pegora, the Witch." Three members, Darren Dybala, Danny Borak and I, will be performing that day.

Tentative plans were also made to attend the Open House at the Supreme Lodge on December 16th.

Members showed turkeys they had created and brought to the meeting.

They were rewarded for their effort.

Poems were also read by Martha Bartos and I.

The meeting was adjourned. Members worked on puzzles and crafts.

Door prizes were won by all and refreshments were served by Mrs. Kutach.

The next meeting will be held on December 7 at 7 p.m. in Hillje.

Youth Club News Dear Members, Our youth club meeting was held on October 21, 1990. We had fourteen members, one visitor and seven adults present.

Under old business, we talked about the District III fall meeting. Linden Hall was hosting the meeting on October 28th. Everyone was reminded to enter their Christmas ornaments. We also signed up for sandwiches, drinks or sweet list to be sold at the district volleyball game. A hot dog supper and hayride also will be held at night.

Under new business, the Bellmead Christmas Parade will be held on December 6th. We will have a nativity theme again this year.

We also rode in the Veterans Day Parade held on November 10th. After the parade, everyone was invited to a chili supper at the American Legion Hall. Our youth club received a certificate award for our help.

We made turkeys for our November contest. We also made and colored turkeys as a Thankgsiving theme to take to the nursing home for our charity project.
