The minutes of the fourth (and last) quarterly meeting of our Supreme Lodge Board for 1990 are in this issue; all members are encouraged to read them, carefully, because they give you an insight of how your officers and directors conduct your Society's affairs between conventions held every four years on a quarterly basis.

Your editor attended the meeting Tuesday afternoon, October 9th and, that afternoon, Supreme Lodge President brought up subjects about reorganizing some SPJST lodges, communicating information to our members and friends the many benefits our SPJST offers, scholarship drive, etc. All subjects were discussed by the Board.

The scholarship drive is a good effort to get our entire membership involved. Just think -- if 20,000 of our members each sent $1.00 to the scholarship drive which ends December 25, 1990, that would add $20,000 to the Scholarship Fund and help many young students gain a higher education which would make your giving worthwhile, especially at this time of the year! The coupon is in the Vestnik.

Also, you will notice that you have to have at least $500.00 in an annuity to qualify as a member (according to our SPJST By-Laws).

Some time after the meeting, your editor received a $100.00 check for Christmas from the Home Office. I was rather surprised, because in the past, it used to be a ham or so and our insurance sales are down from last year, however, it is appreciated.

This brings to mind something that needs to be explained to some of our officers and directors, i.e. the SPJST editor, since the beginning of our Society, has been elected by the entire assembly of delegates at each convention the same as the officers.

Before the last convention in 1988, one officer referred to the editor as a "full-time employee" and now, near the conclusion of the minutes, the editor is placed in the same category.

(Actually, all officers, editor and directors are EMPLOYEES of the SPJST Society in the true sense of the word.)

However, let us get one thing straight: The five Supreme Lodge officers and editor are elected by ALL the delegates while the directors and their alternates are elected by only the delegates of their seven respective districts and verified by the whole assembly. *0*

Our favorite season of the year is almost upon us when many lodge members will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends and probably having installation of officers' ceremony in conjunction with the Christmas spirit.Our compliments to the lodge officers and committees for taking their time to prepare the festivities' full course meal with entertainment for all ages, also many valuable door prizes will be given away from the income which is collected for annual local lodge dues for a very small amount that is collected by the financial secretary. Every member is encouraged to attend and see for yourself what benefits you receive by being enrolled at Lodge 54; it is your lodge, support it!

We understand some of the Supreme Lodge officers will be making a presentation to one of the members who will reach the age of 96; in fact, this editor believes this happens to be the first recipient to have outlived an SPJST policy of Lodge 54. (As soon as the article and photos will be available, it will be published in the Vestnik.) *0* Buy life insurance today for needs of tomorrow. Indifference toward life insurance is often found among young men during their first earning years.

They seem unmindful of the importance and wisdom of taking advantage of building an adequate life insurance program during the years when the cost of insurance is less than in late] life.

As the years go by, they are suddenly faced with the fact that they are no; adequately insured and wonder why they didn't buy more when they were young. This realization generally comes at a time when the family budget is strained to the utmost and the cost of insurance for most of them is prohibitive. For some, there is an added barrier...they are no longer insurable risks.

The amount of life insurance a man should own depends entirely upon his individual needs and circumstances. It should be enough to enable him to achieve his hopes and ambitions, both for those dependent upon him and for himself.

The compulsion of saving money by periodic payments of life insurance is a great help in building up an estate.

Without that urge of meeting a deadline, many are apt to fritter away their money on unnecessary things.

Are you going to see that your son lays the foundation for building an estate early in life? If so, why not buy an insurance policy for him? Today?

Make him responsible for saving at least a portion of the premium. In that way you will be giving him responsibility, teaching him thrift, and selfreliance...the three requisites for success in life. *a*

Minutes Of The Fourth Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held October 9-10, 1990 At The Home Office In Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

OFFICERS' REPORTS -- The Supreme Lodge Officers' reports were acknowledged on unanimously adopted motion by Director Vanek and seconded by a Director Hrncir. (Reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Vol. 9) MINUTES -- The minutes of the July 9-11, 1990 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered page-by-page. There were no corrections and the minutes were approved as presented on a motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vavra and carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS PRESIDENT LESHIKAR'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATIONS -- It was reported there were no additional institutions applying for the Czech Language allocation, thus it was agreed by common consent to pay the remainder of the allocated funds to CEFT in accordance with previous action of the Board.

CHARTER LODGE RESTORATION -- After consideration of estimates of restoration costs for Lodge No. 20, Granger, Director Hrncir moved, and Director Hanus seconded, that the sum of $345.98 be paid to SPJST Lodge No. 20. Motion carried unanimously.

3. Simplified issue product for $3,000 to $20,000 designed for over age 50 for final expenses.

4. Juvenile policy with an annuity rider.

5. Vanishing premium whole life.

6. Living benefits' riders.

7. Accident and health insurance.

8. A two-tiered commission structure.

9. An accident and health policy.

10. Review reinsurance and consider raising the amount ($25,000) at which blood test is required.

CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS (CEFT) -- It was reported that the Czech Chair would be formally inaugurated during the spring of 1991 at a special occasion planned for that purpose.

TOURS -- Report was made that twenty-one persons took advantage of the tour of Czechoslovakia; nineteen SPJST members and two non-members.

There was discussion about scheduling another tour to Las Vegas for early 1991. On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Kohutek, it was decided to schedule a tour to Las Vegas for early 1991. Motion carried unanimously.

TOURNAMENTS -- It was reported that a number of organizations are following the lead of the SPJST and scheduling Tarok and Domino Tournaments. The date set for the 1990 Volleyball Tournament is November 17, 1990.

Editor Rudy Sefcik arrived at 2:35 p.m. to visit the meeting.

SCHOLARSHIP DRIVE -- The possibility of conducting a drive for scholarship funds was considered. It was decided that for this year only, a scholarship fund raiser will be conducted among the SPJST members. The motion approving the fund raiser was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and it carried unanimously. The motion also included a recommendation to gather information on setting up a Scholarship Endowment Fund.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR -- President Leshikar stated that in accordance with our Goals and Objectives, additional training is planned for district and local FACs and work was begun on the program of recognition of 100 percent SPJST families.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR'S REPORT -- SYD Claudette Reese was asked into the meeting to present her report.

LODGE REORGANIZATIONS -- Report was made on progress in reorganization Lodge No. 67, Schulenburg; Lodge No. 106, La Grange; Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville and Lodge No. 89, Rosebud. Reorganization plans are also being considered for three other lodges.

She reported on activities and meetings attended, camp, SYAD and Royalty, the upcoming Texas Fraternal Congress, T-Shirt Design Contest, DYC meeting, Youth Leaders' Workshop, a youth brochure and new youth clubs. Having concluded her report, SYD Reese left the meeting.

A general discussion followed on how we can better take advantage of our market niche and how we can communicate the many benefits of the SPJST to more members. There was a review of problems/challenges, approaches and solutions.

The youth brochure and reprinting of an SPJST brochure was authorized on unanimously adopted motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Kohutek.

MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA Additional information was presented on a previous request to raise funds for medical equipment for a children's hospital in Czechoslovakia. Concerns and administrative questions are to be answered before we give this project further consideration.

SPJST FLAG -- Proposed drawings were reviewed. After discussion, Legal Advisor Kacir moved that the development of the flag be tabled. Director Hanus seconded and the motion carried with ten in favor and President Leshikar and Director Vanek voting in opposition.

HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT -- There was discussion about sponsoring a statewide Horseshoe Tournament for 1991 at a cost of approximately $700.

President Leshikar moved that the tournament be authorized, Legal Advisor Kacir seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

WHEELCHAIRS AND CRUTCHES PROJECT -- The proposed project was discussed. The equipment would be collected through donations and the Home Office would be the coordinator. It was agreed to continue to pursue the project. The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Vice President Gebala, and it carried unanimously.

CZECH FRATERNAL FEST -- There was discussion about the 1990 Czech Fraternal Fest. The function was evaluated for the purpose of future planning. It was suggested that the board members write down their ideas for discussion by the Supreme Lodge officers for further consideration. Director Vavra moved that the Czech Fraternal Fest be held in 1991 at the Bell County Expo Center.

Director Broz seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

Suggestions were heard about giving consideration to moving the fest to other locations over the state beginning with 1992.

Recess for lunch was taken from 12:10 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The remainder of President Leshikar's report was deferred to Vice President Gebala. He introduced Actuary Alan Bailey who gave a presentation on new products. He stated he would be interested in developing products that would be good for the SPJST members and good for the Society. He discussed the following product ideas: 1. Indeterminate premium whole life.

2. Competitive annual renewal term.

Editor Sefcik was given opportunity to address the Board. He reported on items of interest in the Vestnik and shared his ideas on several matters.

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: FALL CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS -- A list of the scheduled seminars was provided.

VISION '90 REPORT -- Report was made on sales' leads submitted. Out of 214 leads, 92 applications were issued and 122 are pending.

COMMISSIONS FOR FIELD FORCE -- The 1/2 percent district commission for July through September was approved on motion by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Broz. Carried unanimously.

STATUS OF SPJST -- The SPJST moved up to the 25 largest society based on insurance in force. The previous year the SPJST was in place 26.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR SPJST SALES REPRESENTATIVES -He reported that the method of establishing an incentive after the fact proved to be quite ineffective.

The proposed rules and regulations were considered. After discussion, the rules and regulations were unanimously approved on motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by President Leshikar.

TEAMWORK '90 WINNERS -- The winners were Monta Foster based on earned premium, Franklin Bravenec based on greatest number of applications and Olga Steffek, the general drawing winner. Each will receive $500.

SECRETARY-TREASURER MIKESKA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: REAL ESTATE OWNED -- Status report was made on the following real estate owned and sold: REO No. 163 -- The former Longview lodge property is still owned and listed for sale at $325,000 with Realty World. Supreme Lodge officers and Director Pokladnik have authority to negotiate and sell the property. Report was made on efforts to sell the property.

REO No. 170 -- A residence located in Ennis, Texas. It was reported the property is under contract of sale for $85,000. A loss on the sale is anticipated.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 14, 1990 The sale was ratified on a unanimously adopted motion by Director Broz, seconded by Vice President Gebala.

REO No. 176 -- A residence on a 5-acre tract in Burleson County, Texas. The property is listed with Shaw Realty for $17,900. Report was made on efforts to sell and the apparent need to reduce the sale price.

The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Vavra have full authority to negotiate and sell the property.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE OWNED/REAL ESTATE LOANS -Report was made on a quarterly evaluation of real estate owned and delinqent real estate loans. A loss reserve was set on those properties that appear to have a potential for loss. The loss reserve for Real Estate owned was reported to be $106,000. The loss reserve on delinquent loans was reported to be $66,800.

LOCAL LODGE IRS FORM 990/990-T -- The IRS form 990 for the 1989 year end has not been received from three local lodges.

STATE BOARD OF INSURANCE EXAMINATION -- The State Board of Insurance Examination Report was reviewed by the Supreme Lodge. The regular examination covered the period from January 1, 1987 through December 31, 1989. After review, the SBI Examination Report was accepted on a unanimously adopted motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Hrncir.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: DIRECT BILL -- Report was made that approximately 87 percent of our certificates have been converted to direct bill.

VESTNIK -- Total Vestnik subscriptions now stand at 8,969. Postage costs were reported to be approximately $960 weekly and publishing costs $1,257 weekly.

FIRST CLASS PRESORT Report was made that by presorting billing notices, a 4-cent per item saving is obtained. He estimated this action contributed to our postage reduction of approximately 20 percent for the year-todate.

AUDIT FIRM -- Consideration was given to the selection of an audit firm for the audit of the year ending December 31, 1990. Three bids were submitted.

The low bidder was the firm of Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd and Therrell of Waco, Texas at $15,000. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved acceptance of the low bidder. Director Vanek seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

SEVEN PAY TEST -- Report was heard that our software firm, U.S.S.I., is working on the project and completion is anticipated within a few weeks.

MORTALITY CHARGE FOR UNIVERSAL LIFE -- The new mortality charge approved during the July Supreme Lodge meeting has been implemented effective August 21, 1990.

LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: LEGAL WORK ON LOANS CLOSED/PENDING -- Report was reviewed on legal work in connection with real estate loan applications.

LITIGATION/TAX SUITS AND FORECLOSURES -- A detailed report was reviewed on litigation, tax suits and foreclosures started, in process or worked out. It was reported that foreclosures were set for Corpus Christi and Fort Worth the same day and air transportation was authorized on a unanimously adopted motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Vice President Gebala.

BANKRUPTCIES -- Report was made on bankruptcies in process in those instances when our borrowers declare bankruptcy. He gave a detailed explanation of the differences in the chapters under which a bankruptcy can be filed.

DIRECTORS' OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: DIRECTOR VAVRA -- He gave a detailed report on his travels and activities during the past quarter.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK -- He discussed his activities and commented on a lodge reorganization in Rosebud. He commented on his first attendance of the National Fraternal Congress (NFCA) in Portland, Oregon.

DIRECTOR BROZ -- He spoke about his travels which included attendance of the NFCA meeting. He stated it was a busy quarter and he logged 96 calls on SPJST matters.

DIRECTOR HANUS -- He reported on meetings and functions he attended this past quarter and discussed some of the problems he worked out. He discussed his work in getting publicity for functions in District V. DIRECTOR VANEK -- He discussed activities and travels in District VI. He commented on the difficulty in making sales and discussed loan activities. He said he was happy that we were working on inactive lodges and stated it was important for us to work on reactivating old lodges.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR -- She discussed various activities in District VII. She brought up a challenge Director Broz made in which District IV sales representatives challenged the District VII sales representatives in a sales contest and that they were trying to work out the details.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK -- He reported he represented the SPJST at the KJT Convention in Houston and he reported the KJT changed their name to Catholic Union of Texas instead of Czech Catholic Union of Texas. He discussed on other changes made by that organization.'

He reported that he also represented the SPJST at the recent convention of the CSA and shared information that was of interest.

Recess for the day was taken at 6:15 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. October 10, 1990.

NEW BUSINESS PRESIDENT LESHIKAR'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: SPJST CAPS FOR MEMBERS -- It was suggested that we should try to get as much public relations for the dollar as possible and SPJST caps could be used to stretch the advertising dollar. Consideration was given to the possibility of giving SPJST caps to all members attending spring district meetings. There was discussion about the need to keep expenses down and to carefully budget expenditures. No action was taken.

EMPLOYEES' SALARY ADJUSTMENTS employees' salary adjustments for 1991.

There was discussion about the need to determine the profitability of the organization before employee salary adjustments are set. It was requested that financial reports should be prepared quarterly so that we could determine where the Society was at a given time so far as profitability of operations are concerned.

It was agreed that funds be authorized to enhance software to generate a financial statement quarterly on a profit and loss basis prepared similar to an annual statement, with certain qualified estimates. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Vavra and carried unanimously.

NFCA REPORT -- President Leshikar orally shared with the Board information he picked up attending the NFCA. Directors Vavra, Kohutek and Broz also shared information they obtained at the NFCA. WORKSHOP -- Consideration was given to setting the date for the 1991 Lodge Officers' Workshop. After due consideration, a motion was unanimously adopted to set the workshop for February 23, 1991. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala. Legal Advisor Kacir will coordinate the workshop.

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: NEW SALES REPRESENTATIVES AND SALES TRAINING -- Consideration was given to Vice President Gebala's recommendation to professionalize our sales force by requiring newly-appointed sales representatives to spend two days at the Home Office for inhouse training and to complete the Quick-Start II training course before receiving their credentials as sales representatives. It was explained that the two days inhouse training could be on a Saturday and Sunday. After discussion, Legal Advisor Kacir proposed an alternative to requiring Quick-Start program for new sales representatives. In lieu of requiring completion of Quick-Start, the sales representative would be on probation until they wrote ten insurance applications and would work closely with the field force.

On motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Kohutek, the recommendation was approved with the addition of the alternative for the Quick-Start program. Motion carried unanimously.

Information and cost estimate will be provided for a proposed statewide weekend insurance training seminar.

MEMBERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS BY ANNUITY -- Report was made that there is an influx of members who purchase a small annuity to obtain membership and have no other insurance with the Society. According to our By-Laws, an annuity certificate must have a value of $500 to qualify as an active member. It was determined that membership cannot be obtained by purchasing an annuity for less than $500.

Uninsurable new applicants for membership by an annuity would be required to make a deposit of at least $500. Vice President Gebala would come up with a recommendation in the January meeting on existing annuity holders with annuities of less than $500.

The motion to adopt was by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unanimously.

TARGET MARKETING -- Target marketing of those involved in the youth program was discussed. It was agreed to work on targeting this niche as well as targeting earlier scholarhsip recipients.

NEW PLANS OF INSURANCE -- Consideration was given to potential new plans of insurance. Discussion followed but no action was taken.

SECRETARY-TREASURER MIKESKA'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: REAL ESTATE LOANS -- A list recommending action on loans delinquent three or more months was reviewed and approved on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Vavra. Carried unanimously.

MINUTES OF SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS' MEETNGS -- The minutes of Supreme Lodge officers' meetings were considered and approved on a unanimously adopted motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Broz.

Wednesday, November 14, 1990—VESTNIK/5 THIRD QUARTER INVESTMENTS -- A list of real estate loans and investments was reviewed and the loans and investments/sales were ratified. The motion was by Director Hmcir, seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

DIRECTORS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS:

A report was given on the downgraded Southeast Texas Housing finance bonds in the face amount of $125,000 and it was decided to hold the bonds pending further developments.

He reported on information from the NFCA encouraging fraternal societies to get more involved in outside services.

INVESTMENT POLICY -- The Investment Policy of the Society was reviewed.

The percentage of assets allowed in bonds and government-guaranteed securities was increased to 54 percent from 48 percent. The motion approving the change was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Broz, and it carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE RATE -- After review of investment yield information, it was agreed to leave the Universal Life rate at 8.5 percent effective for the period from November 1, 1990 through January 31, 1991. The motion was by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Vanek and carried unanimously.

ANNUITIES -- After due consideration, the annuity rate was left at 7.6 percent for the period effective November 1, 1990 through January 31, 1991. The annuity payout rate for immediate annuities was left at 8 percent effective November 1, 1990 through January 31, 1991. The motion of approval was by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Hanus and it carried.

MEMBERSHIP LONG DISTANCE PLAN -- Report was made on status of the long distance plan, and implementation was contingent on working out final details.

RESOLUTION -- The following Resolution was adopted authorizing facsimile signature: CORPORATE RESOLUTIONS FOR USE OF FACSIMILE SIGNATURES RESOLVED, That any bank or depository, be, and it hereby is, authorized and directed to honor as genuine and authorized instruments of this corporation any and all checks, drafts or other orders for the payment of money drawn in the name of the corporation and signed with the facsimile signature(s) of any of two officers of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST).

FURTHER RESOLVED, That this corporation assumes entire responsibility for the use of actual or purported facsimile signature(s) of any person or persons named in the foregoing resolution appearing on checks, drafts, or orders of this corporation drawn on any bank or depository, and for payments made by said institution in reliance thereon, which payments may be charged to this corporation, regardless of by whom or by what means the actual or purported facsimile signature(s) are affiXed, if they resemble the facsimile specimen(s) duly certified to or filed with Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), by the secretary or other officer of this corporation.

There is no provision in the Charter or By-Laws of said corporation limiting the power of the Board of Directors to pass the foregoing resolution and that the same is in conformity with said Charter and By-Laws.

The Resolution was unanimously adopted on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Hmcir.

DIRECTOR VAVRA -- He suggested that a more professional display be obtained for functions such as the NFCA.

He suggested consideration be given to getting the minutes approved by session before the directors leave the meeting such as the procedure at SPJST Conventions.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK -- He recommended that we look at ways to get more exposure for the SPJST museum but felt that display items should not be taken out of the museum for out-of-town mini-museum displays.. He spoke about looking into a scholarship trust fund. He commented that the insurance department has already implemented some of the goals and objectives.

DIRECTOR BROZ -- He spoke about revitalizing lodges and stated he felt he had a great future in store.

DIRECTOR HANUS -- He emphasized the importance of the Goals and Objectives and stated he has encouraged members in his district to retain the Vestnik in which the Goals and Objectives were printed.

DIRECTOR VANEK -- He discussed the loan guidelines and it was agreed to change reference in the guidelines from mobile homes to premanufactured homes.

There was discussion about a Christmas bonus of $300 each for the Supreme Lodge officers, $200 for the directors, $100 for full-time employees and $50 for part-time employees. The motion approving the bonuses was by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Hmcir and carried unanimously.

Director Vanek discussed the upcoming District VI meeting.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR -- She discussed the District VII Family Fun Day and suggested that Supreme Lodge officers scheduled to attend might wish to reschedule his attendance for the spring meeting, since there will be no meeting or opportunity for the officer to speak.

She stated that she thought this has been a very good meeting, and much has been accomplished.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK -- He expressed appreciation that he was authorized to attend the KJT Convention and CSA Convention as a representative of the Society.

He reported that Dallas is in process of designating Brno, Czechoslovakia as a sister city.

He brought a report from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes.

The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin at 9 a.m. on January 7, 1991.

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 5:05 p.m.

Overall total expenses have decreased by 7 percent and income has increased 7 percent for the corresponding period the previous year.

DISCOUNTS -- The customary 25 percent discounts on Class A and B certificates for 1991 were approved for those certificates in force for thirty-five years or more on members who have attained the age of seventy with an additional 25 percent reduction when they attain age seventy-five. The motion was by Director Pokladnik, seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

BUDGET -- Those accounts that exceeded 75 percent of the budgeted amount were analyzed to determine the reason for the excess.

REFUND TO LODGES FOR 1990 -- After review of the formula, it was decided to charge the Supreme Lodge officers with the task of adjusting the formula consistent with our Goals and Objectives, for mail poll review of the directors.

LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: LEGISLATION -- Report was made on anticipated new legislation and various trends and changes that could impact the SPJST. PROPERTY -- He reported that the property adjoining our expansion property is being offered to the SPJST. He discussed long-term possibilities of securing a tract of land for the Library, Archives and Museum in a more prominent location. There was little indication of interest in purchasing the property.

Spring Branch ISD Receives SPJST Donation Supporting Czech Language

REPRESENTATIVES ATTENDING

Dear Mr. Leshikar: Thursday, November 2; 1990 Mr. Louis Hanus, SPJST District Five director, presented a check from SPJST in the amount of $600.00 to Mr. Joe Kohlmaier, superintendent of Department of Continuing Education in the Spring Branch Independent School District. This presentation .was made in Mr. Kohlmaier's office and was attended by Mr. Charles J. Heyda, Czech language instructor in the Westchester Education Center evening school.

Mr. Kohlmaier expressed his appreciation and thanks for this donation

which helps maintain the Czech language in the curriculum of this most popular adult day and evening school on the Houston Westside. Czech, which is taught by Mr. Heyda on Tuesday evenings (beginner's class) and Thursday evenings (advanced class) is one of many languages taught in the day and evening school--French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and English as a second language.

Mr. Heyda, who is a retired engineer, began his eleventh year of teaching the Czech language this fall with a beginner's class of 19 students and an advanced class of 8. This is one of the

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 14, 1990 largest enrollments in Czech study in recent years, which Mr. Heyda attributes to renewed interest in Czechoslovakia since the "Velvet Revolution" of November 1989.

Several of his students are engineers with a large Houston engineering firm which is working in Czechoslovakia on a joint venture with the Czechoslovak government.

Since 1984 Mr. Heyda has recruited and organized groups of students from throughout the United States to study Czech each year during the month of July at Charles University in Prague.

This year this program, which is sponsored by the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute, was extended to include study at the Masaryk University in Bmo. This activity plus the evening classes at Westchester Education Center and the several other classes in Czech throughout the Houston area is an important part of the program to keep the Czech language and culture alive and to foster interest in our Czech heritage.

Wednesday, November 14, 1990—VESTNIK/9 youth program and delivering their state winning speeches. Leslie and Jason have been very busy since their coronation in August. Their next appearance will be at the Temple Parade in December.

The SPJST youth always do an outstanding job and this year was no exception. Lenice Kaspar of Lodge 30, Taiton had the crowd clapping while she tapped to "Beer Barrel Polka."

Nikki Prescott from New Tabor Lodge 17 had the audience in tears with her solo rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings." Renelle Wright of Academy Lodge 177 didn't miss a beat with her excellent oral presentation of "Gumsky." Stephanie Roye of Taiton Lodge 30 mesmerized the audience

with her innovative tap routine to "Swing The Mood." The evening concluded with the dazzling routine "Puttin' on the Ritz" wonderfully performed by Ken Andreason, Tony Mayes and Leslie Barnes of Lodge 84, Dallas.

Once again, the youth did an outstanding job in representing the SPJST Society and indeed helped to make the 1990 TFC Youth Spectacular a night to remember.

My thanks to the parents for seeing that the youth arrived safely and to Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, officers, directors and members for their support.

The third quarterly meeting was called to order by President Ted Kocian at 7:00 o'clock on Friday, September 7, 1990 at Lone Star Hall.

President Kocian led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and everyone remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed sisters, Peggy E. Thacker, who died on July 7 and Willie Mae Dornak, who died on August 18th. May they rest in eternal peace.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the June 1 meeting. These were approved as read.

Items of correspondence read by Secretary Emery included an invitation and complimentary tickets from Lodge No. 92 to their 80th anniversary celebration and Czech Heritage Day, and a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar explaining the Charity Projects.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was approved as read.

We are very happy to welcome the following new members, namely, Randi L. Price, Dee Anne Reeves, Walter M. Reeves, Jr., Kenneth W. Scheler and Rachel Pareya. We also welcome the following members who transferred to our lodge from Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, namely: Allen D. Soukup, Frances L. Soukup, Terry R. Soukup and Timothy R. Soukup. Additional insurance and/or conversions on the following members were made: James A. Kaluza, Jo Ann Pareya, Darlene F. Scheler, Kevin W. Scheler and Renee S. Scheler; all of the new members and transferees are credited to Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report which was approved as read.

President Kocian complimented Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza on becoming the top sales representative in District III for May. We appreciate all of Brother Kaluza's hard work and we thank him.

Brother Freddie Kaluza was elected "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge No. 54. We are very fortunate to have this member; not only is he very active in all lodge activities, but he is also involved with many civic affairs in our community.

Committees were appointed by President Kocian to plan our upcoming Christmas Social to be held at Lone Star Hall on December 2nd. All members and their families are invited to the Christmas party, dinner and program. Social hour will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship: a program with drawings for door prizes will be held from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Santa Claus will make an appearance to visit with the children. Pictures will be taken and goodies will be given out by Santa. A Christmas dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. Ladies of our lodge are asked to bring their favorite dessert to complement the dinner which will be furnished by the lodge. We are an ticipating a large crowd and looking forward to.a great party.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth News Dear Members and Friends: Wow! What a month we've had.

I walked through doors I had not seen in over 20 years. Lodge 142 may be small, but it's so warm and friendly. Our District V Halloween Party began. I've heard of the terrible twos before but we had the troublesome two at our party!

Our DYC Marie Stayton and our Lodge 88 Youth Leader Barbara Linney made their grand entrance and the fun never stopped. They were two clowns who passed out goodies to all.

Marie we loved your socks! When these two walk in a room of children, things happen! They really care about every youth member and the room lights up!

Everyone brought sandwiches, chips, dips, cookies, witch suckers, bags of candy and punch a plenty. The children tried biting apples, apple relays, listened to music, talked, played and many other activities!

The LITs really arranged nice safe games and worked well with the children.

Lodge 88's newly-elected officers for the Social Committee really did a bang up job. Thanks for a safe and fun evening for all. THANKS, AGAIN, TO LODGE 142 for letting us use your building. It was good to meet with some of the district members so soon after Family Day in Danbury.

The 80th Annual Czech Day on October 28, 1990 was a great success!

People came from all over the state for this important day.

All of the day's activities were perfect. Never before have I seen such a turnout of warm and beautiful people.

This is what I remember growing up-smiling, friendly faces!

We were also treated by other performers our very own Choral Group and Czech Orchestra, Czech Folk Dancers of West, Cloggers, gymnastics from Sokol Houston. Wow! What a day!

Eleanor Tinsley read a Proclamation from our Mayor Cathy Whitmire proclaiming October 28, 1990 as Czech Day. There was not one costume this day that I did not admire. Thanks to everyone for making this day a success.

Adam Faraizl Latest Movie Projects Millions of Stephen King fans will be getting an extra "treat" between Halloween and Thanksgiving! ABCTV has tentatively scheduled the miniseries adaptation of his novel "IT" to air Sunday, November 18, and Tuesday, November 20, from 8 to 10 p.m. (skipping Monday night football).

The all-star cast that filmed this past May, June and July in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, includes Richard Thomas (The Waltons), John Ritter (Three's Company), Harry Anderson (Night Court), Tim Reid (WKRP in Cincinnati), Dennis Christopher (Chariots of Fire), and Richard Mauser and Annette O'Toole who have appeared in numerous Theater and TV Movies. Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Show) puts in an especially evil appearance as "IT."

Adam Faraizl plays "Don Brown" in "The Final Verdict," a made-forTNT Cable TV Movie, directed on location in Houston by Jack Fisk (Sissy Spacek's husband) and starring Treat Williams and Glen Ford.

His grown daughter remembers back to when she was a young girl and Adam plays a "rich brat" who pesters her and her cat with his sling shot, and he also has a scene with Glen Ford who plays her grandfather! It was filmed in Houston and directed by Jack Fisk (Sissy Spacek's husband). The movie is still in "post-production," and has not been scheduled yet, so we will all just have to keep checking our Cable TV guides for the next few weeks for the definite scheduled viewing time!

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No.. 79, Corpus Christi on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister ANGELINE SCHWERTNER, age 55, who died Monday, October 22, 1990.

Sister Schwertner was a member of the Central Christian Church on Weber Road, the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 364 and the VFW Auxiliary Post John N. Timon No. 2397.

Survivors include her husband, Norbert William Schwertner; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Gary King; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Debbie Schwertner, all of Corpus Christi; her sisters, Vlasta Machu of Granger and Evelyn Seigmund; a brother, Frank Kovar; her mother, Frances Kovar, all of Taylor; also five grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.

Funeral services were held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 23 in CageMills-Jackson-Langham Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. William C. Wayne officiating. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 24 in Salado Cemetery in Salado, Texas.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Tim Curry plays the evil entity and Adam Faraizl plays 10-year-old asthmatic Eddie Kaspbrack in ABCTV's mini-series adaptation of Stephen King's "IT" -- -filmed on location in Vancouver.

This story tells about seven mis-fit children who become friends and form a "Loser's Club" that fights bullies in school and "IT!" As 10-year-olds they think they kill the evil entity, but promise to come back if "IT" returns, and you guessed "IT," they come back 30 years later in 1990 to fight "IT" as adults!

Twelve-year-old ADAM FARAIZL (a life-time member of SPJST Pokrok Dallas No. 84) landed the role as one of these children when he auditioned this past spring in Hollywood. He will play asthmatic Eddie Kaspbrack.

Adam has kept busy in between filming by achieving his 2nd degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo, and playing 4th year, 1st chair violin. He has been honored at the Garland School Board meeting with a certificate for being one of five 6th graders last year who helped Austin Academy take First Place Honors in the Texas State Math Test! He still is a computer whiz and a video game freak.

Since returning from Vancouver, he did another round of auditions all over the Los Angeles area and Austin and Houston and landed a small but important role in "THE FINAL VERDICT," a made-for-TNT Cable TV Movie.

This story stars Treat Williams as a famous lawyer in 1919 Los Angeles.
