On Saturday, October 13, Skrabanek Park in Danbury was the place to be for fun, food and fraternalism! It was the· site of the District V fall meeting and fun day.

District V Director Louis Hanus and Supreme Lodge Vice President Ber­ nard M. Gebala were in attendance.

Vice President Gebala presented Dis­ trict V President and Sales Repre­ sentative Evelyn Mikeska (FIC) an

award from the National Insurance Counselors' Association in recognition of her Million-Dollar life insurance production.

After the meeting, a delicious meal of barbecue chicken and all the trim­ mings was served and enjoyed by all.

Fraternal orders have long been leaders in smaller communities.

Perhaps this shouldn't be surprising.

Fraternal organizations grew out of the need for human companionship among ne Wcomers , just off the boat from the old country or off the train from an older section of the continent. What f · b fi f th nnge en~ its . some o em developed, like insurance or funeral benefits, sick benefits, or prepaid medical care grew out of the needs of ' . . a transplanted people seeking secunty in a new environment.

While it is true that social security laws and management-labor contracts . . provide these sorts of benefits to many among us, the need for human fellowship is, if anything, greater than in the days when prairie wagons pushed . across the plains, In those days the gaps between Americans were largely based on national origins. It made a whole lot of difference whether one's ancestors had come from Czechoslovakia, England, Germany or Italy. Today, except in isolated com­ munities, those fences are quite largely down.

But new gaps between Americans have arisen, some based on occupa­ tions and all widened by the speed and impersonal nature of modern living.

With all of their automobiles and television sets and factory assembly lines, people are more inwardly alone today than they were on a western frontier. Only the concept of Irater­ nalism, which brings together the fac­ tory worker, the plant manager, the farmer, and the main street

businessman, can give our people the sense of togetherness they want and the nation needs.

So the need for fraternal orders is greater than ever.

People are gregarious human beings who like to be with people whom they like to be with and who like to be with them.

They want to do things together that they know they cannot hope to ac­ complish alone. Only the mentally un­ balanced want to live as hermits, either in a small town or a big city.

To the extent that they meet this hunger for human friendship, the fratemals prosper in any community.

If · we are at home with people, and help to make them feel at home with us, our fraternals will never be neglected. If we like people, they will like us and want to join with one another as brothers and sisters in a fraternal organization. All else is a sideshow. That is the main tent.

To those who may have wondered as to the future of fraternal organizations in America and Canada, there go the words of the great medical missionary, Albert Schweitzer, who wrote, "Ideals that carry within them sel ves enduring worth will adjust themselves to changed circumstances and grow stronger and deeper in the midst of them." Any basic human need will not wither and weaker. Those who need it will not let it die. As long as the fráter­ nals fill a need in the lives of our people and a place in the life of our communities, there will be bright tomorrows for this organization of average people united for fun, fellow­ ship and fraternalism.

What would you***do if life insurance were repealed? A general agent asked one of his salemen who didn't want to sell his friends.

Suppose, for example, that we had word from the home office tomorrow morning that all life insurance com­ panies were going to be required by law to quit selling life insurance forever.

But let's also suppose that our com­ pany was able to secure a special dis­ pensation on your behalf: You are going to be permitted to sell 100 more policies. Then you will be all through.

No more life insurance---Ever!

Now think it over. Who are the 100 people you are going to rush to see to let them in on a once in a lifetime op­ portunity? Isn't it yourself, your fami­ ly and your good friends? Of course!

All right, There is not a chance that life insurance is going to be repealed, and we are glad for that=but why is the situation any different insofar as calling on your friends is concerned?

Life insurance is a legal contract; it's fool-proof; worry free; and is tlte only method through which your family can receive what you in­ tended to set aside not just the amount actually saved.

Information was*** received in our office from National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) advising us that Dorothy Sims of National Catholic Society of Foresters was the national winner of "Fraternalist of the Year" award. Ms. Sims was selected from thirty-eight applicants and our own SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year Alvin Sefcik was among the nominees for consideration. We congratulate both of them on their accomplish­ ments.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the preceding six committees and the excellent documentation of committee functions by the 1989 Committee, we were able to accomplish the goals and objections set forth by the NFCA: *To encourage every member Society to become involved in the program. To this end, we requested that the NFCA establish a new award of $500 to the Society whose nominee is chosen as the "Fraternalist of the Year." That Society would then donate this award to the charitable organization of the Fraternalist of the Year's choice, The Board of Directors approved this addition at theif.

June meeting, and a flyer was sent to every Society announcing the new addi­ tion to the program. The committee feels that this award encouraged a record­ breaking thirthy-eight societies who submitted nominations. *To select a panel of judges who were qualified to choose. the best from this outstanding field of fraternalists. Deepest gratitude and sincere thanks to the St. Louis Directors of Volunteer Services, and particularly to their President Sue Woolweaver, Director of Volunteer Services for the American Red Cross, who served as chairperson of the Selection Committee. The task in choosing only one recipient was gargantuan and the committee, made up of three competent and qualified judges of volunteer service, did an excellent job in choosing our recipient. *To publicly acknowledge that each nominee is a winner. Once again, Editor Jim Ballew will feature a special section in the November issue of the The Fraternal Monitor with a photo of each nominee.

Special thanks are also given to William Eimers and Catholic Family Life In­ surance for their assistance in reproducing the forms for 1990. On behalf of Bernie, Cheryl and myself, we thank each of the societies who played such a key role in the success of this year's program.

The committee would also like to take this opportunity to urge an of our mem­ ber societies who did not participate in this year's program to submit a nomina­ tion for 1991. Our wish is that next year's committee receive many, many more nominations and that this program continues to grow as it has in the last seven years.

Dear District Ill Members: The District Ill fall meeting will be held October 28, 1990 at Linden Hall at Lodge No. 66, Waco. Registration will start at 9:30 a.m. with com­ plementary kolaches and coffee. The meeting will convene at 10:30 a.m.

It will be a fun-filled and interesting day for all. We will have a kolache contest, volleyball tournament, Christmas ornament for the youth, and the youth will have a Halloween Party and Hayride.

Lodge 66 will also have a barbecue dinner.

Everyone is encouraged to come to the meeting and participate in the busi­ ness of the district.

We will also be electing a rest homes director at our meeting. Brother Sid Pokladník is retiring from this office.

Minutes From District III Spring Meeting April 29, 1990 At Lodge No. 180, Burleson The meeting was called to order by District III President Mydell Grochoske, and the pledge and motto were led by Flag Bearer Kevin Dobecka.

The president called for a moment of silence for our departed members and loved ones.

A welcome was then given by Lodge 180 President Louis Grochoske First Vice President Gladys Yates thanked Lodge 180 for hosting the meeting, and announced that judging of the quilt contest was taking place.

It was determined that there was no special correspondence to Secretary Justine Andreason, who was not present due to illness.

The approval of the minutes was asked for, two corrections or additions were asked for by Sister Maxine Sefcik. At the fall meeting, she asked who was selected National Fraternalist of the Year and also what was the cost of mem­ bership in the NFC. Brother Sid Pokladnik asked that these corrections be put in the next minutes.

He then answered Sister Maxine by relating that the SPJST did not submit a name for the National Fraternalist, and the second part is that the NFC dues are prorated to each society based on assets. Brother Sid also commented that he felt the dues were well worth the membership in NFC. · The minutes were approved as read in the Vestnik, and these corrections were added to the current minutes.

Sister Maxine Sefcik asked about Rest Home No. JI tax problem, and Brother Sid explained that each year you must file a non-profit status and that years ago this was not recorded on this home, so the lady in charge of this tax issue is taking advantage of this oversight and we have been in a law suit for 12 years fighting this, and it looks about over. He stressed we are not paying taxes and have !!roven to be non-profit, so we hope to end this very soon.

He then reported on the Czech Educational Foundation. We have over $400,000.00 and additional monies coming available, and we are now down to a decision that must be made possibly in the next two weeks. The university will pay part of the professorship salary and we will pay for other educational materials, but we must have·the money deposited for one year and earn interest before this can begin.

Questions were raised about teacher hiring, etc ...and Brother Sid explained that details such as these would have to be -covered by advertising for just the right instructor who would properly fit the program of education that the foundation requires.

A question was then raised about communication; in that a program was going on for sales representatives which was not made known to all sales repre­ senatives and, why was that?

Brother Gebala answered this by saying that this was a test program with a cost of about $85.00 per person, and that we must see first if it will prove effective and useful before all the sales representatives can be offered the program. He also stated that details of this project were in the Supreme Lodge minutes in the Vestnik. Each State Field Representative was asked to chose one person in each district to participate in the program and, if it shows its effectiveness, then it will be considered by the Home Office for expansion.

He pointed out that it is cheaper to spend $85.00 a person for seven people, and to make this determination before we offer it to all sales representatives and not even know if it's any good.

The meeting was then adjourned for lunch.

The afternoon session was called to order and President. Mydell Grochoske began with roll call of lodges. Eight lodges were represented with Lodge No. 66, Waco having the most in attendance.

First Vice President Gladys Yates recognized the guests and visitors.

President Mydell Grochoske thanked the ladies in the kitchen who prepared the dinner.

First Vice President Gladys Yates then reported on the rules of the horseshoe contest to be held after the meeting and that three prizes would be given=one by the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Gebala then read the 50-year members and they were asked to come up for a picture.

The reading of the names of the departed members was done by Brother Sid Pokladník and a moment of silence was, again, held in their honor.

The District III youth were asked to step up to the front and sing the SPJST Song, which was led by DYC Bessie Petr. After this all the youth were dis­ missed for their meeting.

One of the first of several drawings for door prizes was held. These drawings were repeated throughout the day.

The guest speaker from Supreme Lodge was Vice President Brother Bernie Gebala. Brother Bernie brought some decals of SPJST for your car and also some information on SPJST benefits. He extended best wishes from the Supreme Lodge. The big news he wanted to report on is a new contest involv­ ing all membership to help recruit new members. and be able to win prizes like sales representatives do. This will be handled by a coupon on the back of the Vestnik that can be mailed in by any member, who can submit a new name and also their preferred sales representative. The new member will not be counted until the designated sales representative actually writes the insurance. This promotional ideas is to help stimulate inter-action between the general member­ ship and the sales force. Ht' added that additional information will be forthcom­ ing in the Vestnik. He then asked for questions, and stressed the need for good communication.

Brother Gebala then asked our State Field Representative Jim Wiest for District Ill to say a few words.

Brother Jim, again, stressed the importance of the contest for members, as a way for all of us to help the sales force gain new prospects.

Brother Pokladník then commented on the seminars the sales representatives at­ tend. and explained that their presence at these seminars is documented and reported lo the Stale Legislature as proof of their qualifications. He also then stressed communication among each other. and maintaining the lodge system and holding your meetings and reporting to the Supreme Lodge so we keep tabs on what we do especially in the area of volunteers. as a non-profit society. He then congratulated all the Fraternalísts of the Year from the local lodges and also the 1990 scholarship winners.

Brother Pokladnik then gave a rest home report. We do have the capital right now for our homes, and are not having to borrow money. We are now in the process of buying computers for the homes for an approximate cost of around $25,000.00. The homes are in good condition. The No. li home is having a tax problem thar'we are now close to resolving in our favor, and our attorneys are handling it very well.

He then stated that a new rest home director be nominated at the next meeting and he would like to step down after so many years to devote more time to his family needs.

Committee Reports: By-Laws •• Jerry Milan was out-of-town and had no report yet.

Finance ·- Larry Laznovsky was not present but Rose Steinman gave his report. The committee met on January 27, 1990 at the Supreme Lodge. The discussion centered around the budget and proposed pension payments.

Insurance

Ben Jarma stated that the sales' seminars and training sessions are held twice a year and the sales representatives are required to attend these. Special meetings at local lodges are being held once-a-month and are strictly volunteer, but he encouraged all sales representatives to attend. He then commented on a new­ letter from Brother Gebala to all sales representatives and was impressed at how informative and worthwhile it is.

He also reported the Vestnik was going to laser printing and it will be clearer to read. He also read a letter complimenting the paper and reminded all of us of its contribution to good communication.

Sister Mydell Grochoske then asked Brother Pokladnik and Brother Gebala to give Supreme Lodge reports.

Special prizes were to be given: A million-dollar pin to Johnny Krajca of Lodge No. 25, Ennis and a second diamond for Johnny Krizan of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood for selling a million dollars worth of insurance for the third year.

Sister Kay Lynn Kovar of Ennis passed her FIC and gets a certificate.

Brother Sid was asked if the sales representatives signs up for the Fraternal In­ surance Counselor (FIC) course, who pays? He answered that they pay until they do pass and then they are re-embursed by the Supreme Lodge.

Incentive checks were then given out and pictures were taken of those present.

Brother Sid gave three allocation checks to President Mydell Grochoske for District Ill. The first one for $250.00 is for District YAD, the second is (50 cents for every certificate of 16 years and over) for $4,519.00, and the third for $800.00 is for the General Expense Fund; these are to be given to Treasurer Al­ bert Banik.

District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr began her report, but stated the youth were still meeting.

She stated that District YAD would be held in June at Lodge No. 84, Dallas.1.

All entries must be in by June 1st.

District III camp will be July 22, 23, 24 and 25th. Camp is free to children who attend half of their meetings throughout the year. She asked that camp forms be in by May 15th.

Last December 2, the District III youth had a Holiday Party at Lodge No. 84, Dallas, but it was just for the day; they have decided to go back to having an overnight.

The Auditing Committee reported that the books on the District III Youth Fund were in order, but were unable to report on the District III General Fund be­ cause the treasurer did not send the books.

The fall meeting was voted to be held at Lodge No. 66, Waco. The membership there will arrange for the volleyball tournament.

New Business After stating that the youth were being used in Lodge No. 66 affairs and doing well, a Lodge No. 66 member then read a resolution, which was then put into a motion, asking the Supreme Lodge to extend the horseshoe contest to a state level contest. This was voted on and approved by the membership.

Winners of the quilt contest were then announced.

The Nominating Committee report was given by Rose Steinman; after she · presented their slate, some nominations from the floor were taken, and some changes were made and approved. The final slate of officers for 1990-91 are:

Free entertainment · from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. includes the Czech Folk Dancers of West, concert pianist Donna Schnell, Lodge 88's Czech Choral Singers, the SPJST Czech Con­ cert Orchestra, demonstrations of traditional gymnastics by Sokol Hous­ ton, and an appearance by Mayor Kathy Whitmire, who will proclaim Oct. 28 as Czech Day in Houston.

The lodge's Olympic-sized swim­ ming pool will be open and a parade of traditional Czech costumes will high­ light the afternoon' s events.

Dancing is scheduled 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with music furnished by the big band Vrazels, who perform polka, western, waltz and modern music.

Tickets to the turkey dinner are $4.50 for adults and $3 for children. Dancing is free with the purchase of a meal ticket and $2 without a meal ticket.

Louis Hanus, director of SPJST District 5 and a Lodge 88 member for 65 years, said, "The 80th Czech Day Anniversary is dedicated to Lodge 88 members, deceased and living, who have contributed to the growth of our SPJST society, and to the youth who will inherit our future."

Hanus, whose father helped found thelodgein 1910and formed the Sokol Houston in 1926, talks proudly of his heritage.

"I used to do gymnastics al the Sokol Houston," he said. "We took Modcl-T Fords to compete with gymnastic units from other towns on horizontal bars and trapezes."

At present, Sokol Houston has about 150members, Hanus said, ranging from children to adults.

"Czech used to he the second most spoken language in Texas," he said.

"It 's been dying out a little, but one thing we have going for us is a follow named Mr. Souček. For the last 10 years he has been teaching the Czech langauge at the lodge. He has 35 stu­ dents right now."

The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) two weeks ago com­ pleted a 30-year project of raising $500,0vO.OO to endow a Czech Lan­ guage teaching position at the Univer­ sity of Texas in Austin. Hanus is one of the directors of CEFT and the university is matching one-half of the amount.

"Icouldjustcry about it,"said Hanus.

"This means the Czech language wi11 always be taught until the end of time, and when they teach the language they can teach other cultural aspects."

SPJST was organized in 1897 as a means to provide affordable insurance to Czech immigrants.

"All our paren Lo; were immigrants so they joined this insurance society out of Chicago," Hanus said. "They went to a convention and complained be-

At that time, all lodge meet­ ings were conducted in the Czech lan­ guage. To raise funds to build new lodge buildings, members presented three plays a year in Czech, a practice which continues today, Hanus sad.

"That was the only way we could make money to build lodges," he said.

"That, and ů1eSunday night dances (in the 1930s).

"We'd come early and watch the girls get off the streetcars," he said.

'They were farm girls who worked as waiifesses and cared for children of richfolk, and we'd go dancing. Wc had at least 200 boys and girls who got married because they met at those dances. What made me mad was that they made every boy wear a tie or they couldn't get in to the dance."

TI1e first lodge, built at Robbie and Studewood, opened in 1911. The lodge's third location, at 1435 Beall, opened in 1962. Lodge 88 member­ ship has grown to more than 9,000 people.

The second site, the 55-year-old so­ cial hall at Robbie and Studewood, burned to the ground a few weeks ago.

Hanus and some other members sal­ vaged a 450-pcnrnd concrete block which was set above the building's front entrance. TI1e block, emblazoned with SPJST's seal, now rests beside the gazebo at the present lodge and will be incorporated into a memorial for all past and present lodge members, Ha­ nus-said.

It's a connection to the past Hanus would like to sec continue into the future. Hanus, who speaks fluent Czechoslovak. visited the homeland in 1968, shortly before the military over­ throw of Alexander Dubcek's demo­ cratic government. Hanus met Com­ munist Party members who tried to convince him ů1at their system was a good one. One man in particular was adamant about the value of commu­ nism in Czechoslovakia, "He was a liberal communist," Hanus said. "When the overthrow came, the conservative communists tried to get rid of him, so he fled to the United States. He's still here inHous­ ton, working for oncřof the TV sta­ tions."

Miss Schnell To Play At Lodge 88, Houston Czech Day Donna SchneJI will play music by Bedrich Smetana as part of the Czech

Day celebration at Lodge No. 88, Houston on Sunday, October 28, 1990.

Miss Schnell, a member of Lodge No. 88, has a Bachelor of Music de­ gree from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland and a Master of Music degree from the University of Houston. She has served on the piano faculty of the Institute of Fine Arts in Silver Spring, Maryland and at San Jacinto Junior College in North Houston. She is a featured artist on Educo Records and has been musi­ cal director for many community theatres in and around Houston.

Miss Schnell taught privately in the Houston area for several years before joining the Houston accounting depart­ ment of an electric motor company based in England.

In addition to what she refers to as her "real" job, Miss Schnell manages to teach and perform, and she is delightéd to have this opportunity to share some Czech classical piano music with the members of SPJST. (Article submitted by Brother Louis Hanus) · -SPJST-

The three brothers are clockwise: Gus Lindemann of La Grange, Kermit Lindemann from Brownsville and Karl Lindemann from Houston.

Three years ago, the brothers met in Rockport for some fishing and found they enjoyed the lovely city so much that trip has turned into a yearly event.

~odge 88, Houston Birthday Club On October 10, 1990 President Katy Trefell opened the meeting at 11:15 a.m. with an amusing "Reading," which was given to her by one of our members.

President Kathy Trefell announced that Lillie Spies and Evelyn Mikulas have held office for so many years, and she wanted all of us to applaud them as an honor.

President Kathy called the roll and we had a beautiful crowd present. I think the cold weather br~ught everyone out.

Secretary Lowrena Lindemann read the minutes, which were approved.

The financial report was given by Lillie Spies, which is always profitable.

The sunshine report was given by Mary Kosut.

Treasurer Lillie Spies announced that our treat at Wyatt's Cafeteria was at­ tended by 41 ladies, and the ladies were very pleased with the food and Mary Kosut was asked to thank the manager for the beautiful cake they baked for us (complimentary).

Margaret Spahr, one of our members, went to St. Louis to a wedding, but had the misfortune of falling a few days before the wedding and broke her arm in several places. She went to the wedding regardless.

President Kathy announced, again, about our big Czech Day on October 28th. The Birthday Club, as usual. will have the best pastry booth you 've ever seen. Lillie Spies is in charge. All of the Birthday Club Sisters and also members of our lodge, including non­ members bring some of the most deli­ cious kolaches, pies, layer cakes, sheet cakes, bundt cakes. This is greatly ap­ preciated by all of us.

In November, we will have a covered dish luncheon, again. The meal will be furnished, and the ladies will bring salads, vegetables, and the following ladies signed up for dessert: Helen Hegwood (2), Louise Kad­ lecek, Anna Hoffman, Willie Mae Stang, Lillian Finn (2), Marie Pokluda, Clara Jecmenek, Evelyn Mikulas, Mary Johnson (2) and Pearl Hanka (2).

We are indeed very sorry that Esther Lee Holton, due to circumstances, is moving to California. We will really miss you.

The Czech Culture Society held a reception at DFW Airport for Ivana and Miloslav Chrobak, Charge d Af­ faires ad Interim, the Embassy of the Czech and Slovak Republic, Washington, D.C. We enjoyed the "50th" American­ Czechoslovak Day at the State Fair on Sunday, October · 7, 1990. The Honorable Miloslav Chrobak said: "It was heartening when you see so many people remembering the old country and still maintaining ties." It's amaz­ ing that most of the people are second generation Americans and most of them speak the language and maintain · our customs. He was moved with the Czechoslovak flag flying in front of the Hall of State along with the United States flag. (This was the first time the Czechoslovak tlag has ever been flown in front of the Hall of State.)

Congratulations to our Sister Helen Vrla, Sr. for being chosen "Queen for the Day" at the State Fair.

Our youth members were getting prepared for the State YAD. We had three youth who entered in Talent and Crafts -.We also had seven youth mem­ bers to participate in the Special Category. · We met at the lodge on August 20 to make baskets for the Czech Fraternal

Fest. SYD Claudette Reese and her daughters taught and helped us make the baskets. We thank them and ap­ preciate their help.

The youth made place mats for Moody Care Center on August 28th.

The youth bad each person's name and knew something about their profession or interest. We drew a picture and per­ sonalized each place mat. The youth did beautiful work and residents loved the mats. We made a visit to the center on September 6 to deliver the mats.

The birthday cake was brought by Larry Yates and the game by Nicole Pruitt. The door prize was won by Amanda Neslony and Nicole Pruitt.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Meeting The October 3, 1990 meeting of Lodge No. 25 Youth Club was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Brian Holland.

President Jessica Honza led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The register was read. There were nine members, two guests and three adults present.

Our secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. There were no correc­ tions or additions.

The treasurer gave her report. She told us how much we made at the Czech Fraternal Festival. Our youth club would like to thank Linda Trojacek and Alicia Honza for selling the popcorn goodies.

Our visitors were Randy Trojacek and Jake Holland.

The business discussed was about going to the District III fall meeting on October 28th. We also are going to make Christmas ornaments to enter in the fall meeting. On Wednesday, Oc­ tober 24, the Ennis youth will have a Halloween Party starting al 6:30 p.m.

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Youth Club was held on Monday, October 8, 1990. The meet­ ing was called to order by President Carl Macek at 7:10 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer. Then the SPJST Motto was presented by the members.

The roll was called. Twelve members were present. We would like to wel­ come Amy Reid as a new member to our club. We encourage her to take an active part in all SPJST functions.

The treasurer's report was given by Jennifer Ashcraft. The new balance was $288.79.

We discussed our Halloween Party fJ.enun\tutt which will be Sunday, October 28th.

We will meet at Flag Hall at 4 p.m. ~ and go on a hayride. Then we will have a party at the hall. Members may Expression of Sympathy dress in costumes if they wish. The We, the Resolution Committee of mother lodge will provide all of the food. Lots of fun activities are planned Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallet­ for this party. Lodge No. 80, Holland Reactives Youth Club Dear Members, Lodge No. 80, Holland, is proud to announce the reorganization of their youth club.

On October 7, 1990 at 2 p.m., the Holland Youth Club held their first meeting. There were seven members and two visiting members present.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese and District II Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky were on hand and presented a slide show for the youth on the benefits and goals of being a youth club member.

We had a great turnout for this meet­ ing and we are looking forward to a great year. We will keep you informed on our progress.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth News Dear Members and Friends, District V Family Day in Danbury was very pleasant. We couldn't have asked for better weather. I would like to thank all of the youth from Lodge 88 for coming.

I saw many people I had not seen in years.

The food was great! The dishes the families brought were really nice.

I was personally impressed with the crafts and ideas of the other lodges.

Úředníci a ředitelé české vzdělávací nadace státu Texas (CEFT) předávají šek v částce jednoho sta tisíc dolarů Texaské universitě v Austině dne 29.záři 1990.

Slavostní zasedání CEFT Dne 29. září se konalo slavnostní zasedání Ceské vzdělávací nadace státu Texas, která je známa pod zkratkou CEFT, Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. Na této schůzi byli přítomni téměř všichni úředníci a ředitelé.

Rovněž byl přítomen vzácný host, Dr. Gerhard Fonken z Texaské university a Dr. Michael Katz, vedoucí katedry slovanských studií při Texaské univer­ sitě.

Po zahájení schůze přítomní účastníci byli svědky předání prvního závdanku v částce sto tisíc dolarů na ustanovení katedry českého jazyka při Texaské universitě, naši krajané v Tex­ asu říkají stolice českého jazyka.

Pan Dr. Gerhard Fon ken zavzpomínal na svoje mládí, kdy přišel jako chlapec do Texasu a měl to štěstí, že náš krajan, Dr. Novotný, mu pomohl s jazykem, takže znal vysokou a nízkou němčinu a angličtinu. Byl si vědom toho, že je potřeba zachovat národní dědictví pro budoucnost a též pro další generace.

Pan Dr. Katz, který bude administrátorem stolice, poděkoval za nadaci a peníz a zdůraznil, že ~ politickým, společenskými a hospodářskými změnami ve Střední a Východní Evropě se projevuje větší zájem o tuto část světa a že universita získala podporu americké vlády, která věnovala na podporu evropských studií značnou částku a hodlá vytvořit při universitě středisko pro jazykovou výuku středoevropských jazyků a ekonomii, čímž se stane Texaská universita mezinárodním střediskem pro vyučování těchto předmětů.

Zájemci o místo řádného profesora českého jazyka, literatury a kultury se hledají na různých místech světa a plánuje se také ustanovení americké university v Praze. Úspěch našich kra­ janů při sbírce- na stolici češtiny povz­ buzuje také jiné slovanské menšiny v Texasu, takže se můžeme dočkat ustanovení katedry polštiny a wendštiny.

Pan J.J. Skřivánek, Jr., president CEFT, povzbudil přítomné k většímu úsilí a k práci na sbírce poslední stovky

tisíců dolarů, aby celková častka stolice dosáhla plného jednoho milionu. Zdůraznil, že nás ještě čeká obtížný úkol, nemáme proto založit ruce do klína. V této souvislosti poděkoval i mnohým dárcům mimo Texas a doporučil, aby se seznam všech dárců vypracoval co nejdříve. Nyní je potřeba zahájit druhou etapu sbírek a je nutno povzbudit studenty ke studiu a jejich rodiče k podpoře stolice češtiny, aby CEFT mohla pak pokračovat na příležitostných sbírkách pro zlepšení programu vyučování.

Vypadá to tak, že v blízké budoucnosti bude možno studovat národní dědictví nejen v Texasu, ale nastane spolupráce mezi Texaskou universitou a universitami ve staré vlasti, takže tato možnost studia učiní katedru českého jazyka na Texaské universitě důležitou pro naši krajanskou větev a pozvedne university ve staré vlasti na mezinárodní úroveň.

V pracovní části schůze jsme vyslechli zprávy jednotlivých úředníků.

Počítací technika pak uvede všechno do pořádku podle jména dárce a podle abecedy. Bylo by též dobré některé částky zaokrouhlit anebo něco k částce přidat.

24. řijna 1990-VĚSTNÍK/13 Když se na Květnou neděli shromáždil všechen lid, vešel Metoděj do chrámu, a poněvadž byl nemocen, vyslovil požehnání císaři a knížeti i duchovenstvu a lidu a řekl' "Opatrujte mne, dítky, do třetího dne." Tak se i stalo. Když svítalo na třetí dne, řekl naposled: "V ruce tvé, Pane, poroučím svou duši." Zesnul v rukách kněží v šestý den měsíce dubna v třetí indikci roku šest tisíc tři sta devadesát tři od stvoření světa (T .J. 6. dubna 885).

Učedníci jej zavinuli do rubáše a učinili mu důstojné pocty, smuteční obřady vykonali latinsky, řecky a slovansky a pochovali jej v katedrálním chrámu. I přidružil se ke svým otcům a patriar­ chům a prorokům a apoštolům, učitelům a mučedníkům. Lidí pak se sešel nesčíslný zástup, provázeli jej se svícemi a oplakávali dobrého učitele a pastýře, mužské pohlaví i ženské, malí i velcí, bohatí i chudí, svobodní i otroci, cizí i tuzemci, nemocní i zdraví, všichni toho, který se stal všechněm vším, aby všechny získal.

--"Ty pak z výše, svatá a ctihodná hlavo, shlédni svými přímluvami na nás, kteří toužíme po tobě, a zbav své učedníky od všelikého nebezpečí a rozšiřuj učení, kacířstva však vyhlaď, abychom zde žili důstojně podle tvého povolání a potom stanuli s tebou,tvé stádo, po pravé straně Krista Boha našeho a přijali od něho život věčný.

Jemu zajisté náleží sláva a čest na věky věků. Amen." -Zhora uvedená dojemná modlitba, kterou končí současný Metodějův životopisec curriculum vitae apoštola Velké Moravy, vyjadřuje neskrývané obavy z budoucnosti. To bylo též jasné samému Metodějovi, který již z těchto důvodů chtěl ještě jednou jít do Říma k papeži Marinovi II a představit mu Gorazda, který měl všechny před­ poklady k dalšímu zdarnému rozvoji slovanského křesťanství ve Velkomoravské říši. Volba Gorazda Metodějovým nástupcem byla promyšlená. Gorazd byl Moravan vznešeného původu a tak mohl očekávat pomoc velmožů. Byl vychován v slovanské liturgii, ale znal i knihy latinské; tím si mohl získat sym­ patie Svatopluka, vládce Velké Moravy, který dával přednost latině.

Do Říma se však vypravil v roce 885 v předtuše Metodějova úmrtí neblahý nitranský biskup Wiching. Tento nehodný kněz obžaloval sv. Metoděje u Štěpána VI z bludů o původu Ducha svatého, z neposlušnosti Apoštolského stolce (z neposlušnosti papež poznámka pisatele), když si sám jmenoval svého nástupce a k vůli zavedení na Moravě byzanských postních předpisů.

Výsledkem Wichingovy podvratné, činnosti byla papežova bulla, ve které papež Štěpán VI jako nástupce Petra, jemuž přísluší bdít nad ryzostí víry a podávat k ní výklad, poučuje Svatopluka, jemuž tato bula byla určena, že Duch svatý vychází z Otce i Syna. Protože se této pravé víry drží Wiching, jmenuje jej správcem morav­ ské cirkve. Pak obšírně poučuje Svatopluka o postní praxi. Nakonec se zmiňuje o Metodějovi, o němž slyšel.že šíří bludy. (Tyto nepravdy o Metodějovi rozšiřovali Němci s Wichingem -- poznámka pisatele tohoto ělánku.) Je-Ii tomu tak, papež je odmítá. Klatba, kterou Metoděj nad Wichingem vyslovil, padne na Metodějovu hlavu. (Tu přikládám následující vložku: Jelikož v latinském originálu této Bully papeže Štěpána VI je použito slovo "indixit," tak někteří badatelé listin z cyrilometodějské doby v 9. století zastávají názor, že Metoděj exkomunikací pouze hrozil, nepolepší-li se Wiching a jeho stoupen­ ci.) Štěpán VI znovu v této listině zakázal slovanskou liturgii, ale

doporučil výklad epištol a evangelií ve slovanském jazyce. Dle této listiny se Metoděj sám prý zavázal nad hrobem svatého Petra., že od užívaní slovanského jazyka upustí. Často se tehdy i později vyslovilo podezření nad pravostí tohoto papežského listu. Je však možno jej srovnat s pokyny, které tento papež dal biskupovi Dominikovi a dvěma kněžím, které vyslal na Velkou Moravu, aby situaci urovnali. V celku se týká týchž bodů a závěrem dodává: "Z naší apoštolské moci zakažte, aby ten, koho se Metoděj odvážil proti ustanovením všech svatých Otců určit za svého nástupce, nevykonával svůj úřad, dokud se nám osobně nepředstaví a svou věc živým slovem nevyloží."

Wiching se tedy stal nikoliv ar­ cibiskupem, ale pouhým správcem, zatímco Gorazdovi byl, nikoliv natr­ valo, výkon této funkce zakázán.

Záležitost moravské církve se tedy nevyřešila a navíc není známo, šel-li kdy Gorazd k papeži do Říma.

Při této příležitosti zmíním se alespoň několika slovy o papežích na Petrově stolci během cyrilometodějské doby ve staré vlasti. Jelikož velká většina papežů byla zvolena do svého úřadu kardinálským sborem ve vysokém věku, tak hodně Petrových následníků bylo hlavou církve pouze pár let. (Tento fakt platil jak v prvních stoletích po Kristu, tak ve středověku, i později.) V cyrilometodějské době se na Petrově stolci vystřídalo papežů šest; za prvního z nich, Mikuláše I (858-867), soluňští bratři Cyril a Metoděj přišli na Velkou Moravu v roce 863. Když Soluňané donesli ostatky sv. Klementa do Říma a dosáhli papežského schválení slovanských bohoslužeb, tak papežem byl Hadrián II (867-872), zatímco obránce Metoděje, Jan VIII, byl papežem od roku 872 do roku 882.

Během dalších tří let byl nejprve papežem Maryn I a po něm Hadrián III; v roce 885 (rok Metodějova úmrtí) se stal papežem Štěpán VI (885 až 891). tolik k pořadí papežů během činnosti svatého Metoděje ve Velkomoravské říši. -- Štěpanérn VI nastalo dle některých pramenů období podprůměrných papežů, které se táhlo takřka celé století>Vraťme se nyní na Velkou Moravu a poslechněme si co o tamějším událostech -- po smrti sv. Metoděje -­ popisuje životopisec sv. Klementa, žáka našeho světce Metoděje, který byl později biskupem v bulharském Ochridu. .

Když legáti papeže Štěpána VI dorazili na Moravu, došlo ve Svatoplukově sídle k teologické debatě o otázce vycházení Ducha svatého.

Němci s Wichingem v čele hájili západní pojetí; Svatopluk prohlásil, že teologii nerozumí s poznámkou ať ten, jehož názor je správný, přísahá, on bude pak onu stranu podporovat.

Němci hbitě odpřisáhli a Wiching začal jednat jako jediný správce moravské arcidiecéze. Tento zpupný Němec zneužil pak Svatoplukovy nepřítom­ nosti a obrátil se proti Metodějovým žákům, podobně jak bavorští biskupové kdysi proti Metodějovi. Po­ dle životopisce Klementova prodali Židům do otroctví některé mladší kněze a jáhny; starší kněze, zvané učiteli, mezi nimi Klementa, Vavřince, Nauma a Angelara, vsadili do vězení, kde je nikdo nesměl navštěvovat.

K tomu je trýznili bitím a nezželelo se jim prý ani jejich šedin. Nakonec je předali, aby byli vyvedeni ze země.

"Světce tedy převzali vojáci," pokračuje životopisec Klementův, ''totíž Němci již od přírody suroví---­ vyvedou je z města a svléknuvše je, vedou nahá. I působili jim jednou věcí

dvě zla: jednak hanbu, jednak útrapy z mrazivého větru, v podunajských krajích stále dorážejícího. Ale i meče jim přikládali k šíji, jako by je chtěli udeřit, a k bokům přibližovali kopí, jako by je chtěli do nich vrazit, aby neumírali pouze jednou smrtí, ale tolikrát kolikrát ji očekávali."

Co se stalo s Gorazdem? Jeho jméno se nevyskytuje mezi jmény vypovězených. Vyhnáni byli totiž jen ti, co přišli na Velkou Moravu z Byzance a z Macedonie. Bezpochyby domácí kněží našli útočiště na dvorcích moravských velmožů. Ani slovanské knihy nebyly patrně-všechny zničeny a k úplnému vyhlazení slovanské liturgie došlo jen v nitranské Wichingově oblasti. -- Jak již v tomto článku zmíněno, Gorazd byl vzdělaný Moravan vznešeného původu, vychovaný ve slovanské liturgii a znalý též latiny.

Původem byl pravděpodobně z Nitranska, jelikož na dnešním Slovensku, mezi městy Nitrou a Galantou, se nachází osada jménem Gorazdov. Jak rovněž již zmíněno, moravští kněží, a zřejmě i Gorazd, žili v ústraní během Wichingovy správy Velkomoravské arcidiecese. Tato ad­ ministrativa skončila roku 893, během války s Němci, když Wiching konečně byl vypovězen ze země pro své stranictví s nepřítelem. (Tento Němec se stal pak kancléřem německého krále Arnulfa a v roce 899 byl jmenován biskupem v historickém Pasově na Dunaji v Bavorsku.)
