To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affectionof children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To rmd the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed socialcondition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; Tlůs is to have succeeded. ·········Ralph Waldo Emerson In the last issue we mentioned the CEFr meeting of Czech Educational Foundation of Texas officers and directors with officials of the Univer­ sity of Texas in Austin - Saturday, September 29th which proved to be rather productive; plans were dis­ cussed about the "official dedication" of the Czech Chair Endowment for pennament teaching of the Czech lan­ guage at UT and the ways and means to raise the remaining $160,000.00 plus to reach the one million - dollar ($1,000,000.00) goal originally set for the endowment.

The remaining $100,000.00 (of the $500,000.00) was presented to the University of Texas officials by CEFf officers headed by Professor Joseph J. Skrivanek,president of CEFr. SPJST Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir took some pictures and they appear in this issue. There were also some direc­ tors present who do not appear in the pictures, namely: SPJST Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, SPJST District V Director Louis Hanus, Tim Kostom, Jan Vaculík, Vic­ tor Peter, all SPJST, and KJT State President Laddie Matula. (We hope we didn't omit anyone.)

CEFI' Board Chairman Roger Kolar of Austin was in Czechoslovakia at the time and was represented at the meet­ ing by his wife, Patty Kolar.

Two things were stressed, at this meeting: 1) The need to raise the remaining $160,000.00 which can be done by donations, pledges, and, cases where there are no beneficiaries, to the en­ dowment, etc. where it will benefit our future youth.

2) An appeal to donors who had donated any amount in the years be­ tween the original $35,000.00 in the 1950s and up to the time of the reac­ tivation of this drive in the 1980s when records were kept by Professor Joseph J. Skrivanek; there probably are not many, however, if anyone read­ ing this feels they could be omitted, please advise CEFI' Secretary Marvin J. Marek,.3218 Hunters Glen, Missouri City, Texas 77459 and he will double check his records.

Remember, we need your help and your donation is tax-deductible. Let us NOT falter now! The "Czech Chair" is established (The First "Chair" of Studies in the Department at Univer­ síty of Texas), now let us ensure that we will have a qualified instructor of Czech which the $1,000,000.00 will accomplish! Your name will be recorded for all times! Future genera­ tions will see the names and recall:

"Our parents, grandparents, relatives and fellow countrymen and women had faith in our future generations to carry on their dreams and ideals."

Tuesday, October 9th your editor spent the afternoon at the Supreme Lodge quarterly meeting and thorough­ ly enjoyed the officers' and directors' reports.

They discussed the future programs of our Society and, of course, our SPJST is also beginning to feel some affects of the recession (call it whatever you wish) and it will be noticed by all of us.

However, with prudent actions and our sound financial position we, in our SPJST, are on more sound basis than many other organizations.

Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska will have more details in the minutes.

Three more districts will hold their meeting with recreation activities before the month of October con­ cludes; namely, District VII -- October 21st at Floresville Lodge No. 107; and District III at Elm Mott Lodge No. 66 (Linden Hall) and District VI at Sweet Home (with two Lodges No. 4 and 63) hosting), both on the same date, Oc­ tober 28th.

Of course, the 80th Annual Czech Day at Lodge Pokrok No. 88 in Hous­ ton is the same date.

We hope all three districts and Lodge 88 members will attend their respec­ tive functions with great attendance.

Remember, it was October 28, 1918 when Czechoslovakia became a free nation by declaring its independence

by President Thomas G. Masaryk with the blessing of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and our entire country. It seems that too many U.S. citizens tend to forget that for twenty years (1918-1938) Czechoslovakia was the truest democracy in Europe!

What life insurance really means.

A life insurance policy is a certifi­ cate of deposit bought on easy terms which cancels at death all unpaid in­ stallments. It is a plan .which makes possible the purchase of money for delivery in the future at times when it will be needed most. As someone wrote to me not long ago: "Life insurance is the organized love of men for their families; the capitalization of effection; the prudence of years; the riches of the poor; the security of the rich. It is love and affection reduced to a science -­ thrift exalted to a profession.

And the beautiful part of it all is that it reaches its greatest value in immedi­ ate cash when everything else is made uncertain through death."

Take An Active Part In Your Local Lodge Affairs

This year's fall social meeting for District VI will be held October 28, 1990 at Sweet Home Community Cen­ ter (formerly Firemen's Hall) in Sweet Home, hosted by Lodge No. 4 - Hallet­ tsville and Lodge No. 63 - Sweet Home. The following is the proposed agenda: 11:00-12:00 -- Registration and Games 12:00-12:45 p.m. -- Meal 12:45-1:15 p.m. -- Business Meeting 1:15 - 1:30 p.m. -- Announcements 1:30-2:30 p.m. -- Youth Program 2:30-2:45 p.m. -- Purchasing Youth Tickets 2:45-3:15 p.m. -- Youth Ticket Drawings 3:15-3:30 -- Contests Results 3:30-5:00 p.m. Games, Refresh­ ments, Social Door prizes will be given throughout the afternoon. Any lodge or member is encouraged to donate an item for the door prizes. · We are asking each lodge to furnish two desserts to serve with the catered meal and afternoon coffee.

In addition, a wheel-of-fortune game will be played beginning at 11 :00 a.m. and each family is asked to donate two

items for the game (pantry items, children's toys, kitchen items, etc.)

In conjunction with the social, there will be several contests members may wish to enter. The following contests will be held if there are sufficient entries; quilt, kolache, horseshoes and volleyball. Rules and entry blanks may be obtained from your lodge, district or state FAC. We have had three previous fall so­ cial meetings and all have been a suc­ cess due to your assistance. We can have another with your participation and contributions. See you October 28th in Sweet Home.

Progressive "42" Domino Tournament At Lodge No. 29, Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor will have a Progressive "42" Tournament on October 20, 1990.

Registration will be from 8:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. with play beginning at 9: 15 a.m. Registration fee is $10 per player and includes noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Please register by Friday, October 19th, so that we know how much food to prepare.

The tournament is open to the public so bring a friend .and enjoy a day of fun and fellowship.

A total or 15 games will be played by all; each game will be played for 20 minutes. We will use. the rules that the State SPJST uses, except that we will change partners every game and score will be kept for 20 minutes instead of 1 O marks is a game.

Fish Fry At Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville A fish fry will be held Sunday, Oc­ tober 21, 1990 at Bleiblerville.

You will have an opportunity to eat all you want: fish with plenty of bread, catsup, slaw and chips; also cakes and pies will be available.

Meal tickets will be $6.50 per adult and $2.75 per child from ages 6 to 12.

Fried fish to go will be available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; serving of the meal starts at 11 :30 a.m.

There will also be a registration at 1 p.m. for a horseshoe tournament and play will begin at 2 p.m.

All members are asked to bring cakes or pies to help pay for the renovation of the hall. All donations will be ap­ preciated.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Meeting The meeting of Lodge No. 47 held October 7, 1990 was called to order by President George Pavelka at 2 p.m.

Flag Bearers Gary Skrabanek and James Kortis brought in the flag and led the membership in the pledge to the flag.

All remained standing for a moment of silent prayer in honor of our sol­ diers serving in the Persian Gulf and our Country.

Visitors recognized were candidate for the State Representative Jack Jones and wife, Diane and daughter, Courtney and District Judge Stan Pem­ berton and wife, Joan; also Ella Marinek and Freddie Schroeder.

New members present and accepted to our lodge were Johnny and Theresa Klecka; welcome and come, again.

Reported on the sick list were Olga Mikeska, Johnny L.Vanicek, Leo Kah­ lig, Ruth Kohutek and Kenneth Kohutek.

To many of our old loyal members, it was their second home as they would call it.

Old Lodge of Czech Immigrants Burns ARSON CITED IN HEIGHTS POK­ ROK FIRE

Houston Chronicle Monday, October 1, 1990 Edition A three-alarm fire Sunday destroyed an abandoned building that served for more than 50 years as a social hall for Czechoslovakian immigrants and resi­ dents in the Heights.

And the flames rekindled the fond memories of the many old-timers who stopped to reminisce Sunday as they watched a backhoe batter the walls of the landmark at Robbie and Studewood.

To some, it was known as the "Slavonic Benevolent Order of Texas, SPJST." To others, it was the Pok-Rok Lodge No. 88. But by any name, it was where Czech immigrants could pur­ chase a $1,000 life insurance policy for very little a month.

The original building, constructed of wood and stucco, was built in 1910 to serve as a gathering place for Czech immigrants, who settled in a pocket of­ the Heights around Cavalcade and 20th streets.

In 1934, the building was replaced with a two-story brick and steel struc­ ture to accommodate the Czech farmers from the Hill Country who came to Houston looking for work Capt. Mike Lewis of Houston Fire Department District 31 said. Sunday that the first group of firefighters ar­ rived at 6:08 a.m. to find flames bil­ lowing from second-floor windows.

Two more alarms were pulled before the blaze was tapped out about 7:15 a.m.

Although the cause was unknown, the fire was believed to have started on the second floor. Arson was suspected.

The building has been abandoned for several years.

Transients used the building for shel­ ter; neighborhood children as a place to play. The building once served as a 24-hour nursery, a polling place and a candy factory.

As firefighters sifted through the rubble, a tinge of sadness dotted the eyes of many of the onlookers.

They recalled wedding receptions and showers, husbands meeting wives and "wonderful parties."

Joe Kowis, 60, grew up in the shadow of the lodge. In 1935, his father opened a mom-and-pop grocery, the K&K Food Market, that still stands across the street.

Kowis married his wife, Betty Ann, in 1954 and they held their wedding reception in the building.

"That old boom, bop, bop (Czech): music used to put me to sleep," he. recalled. "That lodge had . the best dance floor in Houston. There was a big dance there every Sunday night.

Downstairs they served food and beer and played pool. Upstairs was the dance hall."

Two women. 72 and 76, were talking about the festivals they attended in the building.

"We danced a tot," the older one said.

"We celebrated birthdays, showers, weddings, parties of all dif­ ferent kinds. I guess when people hear about it (the fire), they'll be coming by to see it."

"See, they came back," she said, pointing to C.L. Bench and his wife, the former Wanda Meleski.

"I met my wife in that building in 1942," said C.L. Bench. "We used to come here every weekend. We'd walk over here. We didn't have a car."

The lodge's barbecue was an attrac­ tion, Wanda Bench said, but the des­ sert was better.

Louis Hanus, 74, a Czech immigrant, was born a half-block away. He was lodge president for some years.

Sunday he cried.

"When we were teen-agers, the street car used to run right there," Hanus said, gesturing toward Cavalcade. "We had dances on Sundays and all of us single men would go to meet the girls ...

That's where a lot of us met our wives."

Hanus said the hall served Czech, Polish and other residents for years before it was sold in 1965 and con­ verted into a day-care center.

The Czech community will soon mark 80 years in Houston. "Until we moved, we celebrated in this build­ ing," he said.

Harry Drawe, 79, a member of the lodge for 65 years, also remembered the good times he and his family had.

"We wiggled a little bit in that build­ ing," said Drawe, who added that his brother served as the bartender for years.

"'"'"' I overlooked an article that I had written on September 5, when our own Birthday Club Treasurer Lillie Spies' sister, Albina Spanihel, died in Hallet­ tsville. She was born in 1900 to Joseph and Eva Gerlich. Lillie's family is large and she said five members of her family passed away this year. Forgive me, Lillie, for this oversight; we all sympatize with you and the rest of the family.

On September 29, 1990, we had a Polka Battle Dance with the Red Ravens and the Plainsmen. The hosts to this dance were Tom and· Lydia Marsh, assisted by Willie Wehring, Arnold Cmajdalka, and Pearl Hanka. It was a well attended dance.

What's Happening At Lodge No. 183, Arlington, Texas Bratri a sestry: On Friday evening, September 28th, we had a Family Social Night that will not soon be forgotten. A few of our regulars were unable to attend, but the nineteen folks who were there had a feast, had a visit and had a great time.

The chatter and laughter that rang· from the ceiling and walls, attributes to the fact that everyone enjoyed them­ selves and will be looking forward to the next Primary Family Night to be held the last Friday of October. Date your calendar for October 26th as the next exhilarating social gathering. We began the evening by spreading out all the food brought and shared by the congenial families taking part in this sociable event. The lodge purchased a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings from one of the local cafeterias to be shared with all participants. After the food was arrayed for serving, we knew that the group present could never pos­ sibly imbibe all of the edibles. There was both light and dark turkey meat, two large containers of homemade dressing, several salads, giblet gravy, pinto beans and different types of rolls. The dessert department was fan­ tastic. There were three pumpkin pies, a lemon pie, a cherry crunch pastry and several delicious cakes. An in­ fantry brigade couldn't have eaten all that we had laid out before us. Everything went well until Inez Greenlees went to get a piece of pie that she bad set aside (hidden) for her dessert. She had placed it on top of a coffeemaker to assure herself that she would get a piece of lemon pie. It disappeared and we all assumed that it must have ac­ quired legs and ran off. We tried to be helpful to Inez by asking her what color was her pie and what did it look like and in what building was it last seen, but this didn't seem to help.

After a "fruitful" search, the missing pie slice was located. The next time any of you members see Inez, ask her about the "Legend of the Lemon Pie Slice."

The rest of the evening was just as fun as the beginning. After eating, we visited with the lodge brothers and sisters and our friends and visitors.

Then we broke into groups and played games. The nice crowd kept the chatter and laughter bouncing off of the walls and ceiling until the quitting hour of 11 o'clock. Suffice it to say, this was one of the most enjoyable and unfor­ gettable family socials that we have experienced. · The trouble with square meals is that they make you round.

Saturday evening, October 6th, Buddy Hrabal and Memory Lane played at the lodge for our dance. A very good-sized crowd was in atten­ dance. The music was good, the crowd was in a festive mood and the night was a success. The band played from the opening number at approximately 8:30 p.m. until closing time near 1

o' clock in the morning. Please try to attend the remaining dances for the year. Your presence could likely make the remaining dances as delightful as was this past dance.

On Sunday, October 7th, your FAC, with husband in tow, attended the Fif­ tieth Annual Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas. This golden occasion was truly a great affair. There were many dignitaries in attendance who really helped make the day an interest­ ing as well as exciting occurrence.

Everything went as planned and went well due to superb organization. The pre-festivities were nice and the religious Mass was excellent. Of course, my favorite was the march of the costumes; where the people who wore the Old World costumes marched around and showed them off. The cos­ tumes varied in color and richness and were really a sight to behold. The remainder of the day was spent watch­ ing SOKOL performers do their ath­ letic routines, watching the groups do the Ceska Beseda, listening to Czech choral singers and then listening to the Mynarcik Polka Band playing music for everyone to dance to under the tent. With the exception of the . un­ relenting heat and humidity, this was one of the best Czech Days at the State Fair that we have participated in since we started attending these back in the fifties.

You can always tell a Texan, but you can't tell him much.

As I mentioned in my last letter, our next big Family Social Night will be held on the evening of Friday, October 26th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. and last­ ing until 11:00 p.m. Be sure to attend and have as much fun as our last fami­ ly outing provided.

Please remember that there will be NO dance held the first Saturday in November. Saturday, November 3rd, will be an open date.

Our next dance will be the "Harvest Dance" to be held on the evening of Saturday, November 17th. This is al­ ways a fun time and a great dance.

Last year' s harvest dance turned out to be so much fun that we decided to try and duplicate it again this year.

Remember that we will have hanging fruit and if you get caught trying to take the fruit without paying for it, you must go to "jail" until one of your friends (a good friend) pays your bail.

The Czech Mates will be playing for this delightful occasion. Please make plans to attend this dance. Contact Ed Kral or one of the lodge officers to make arrangements for this affair. I feel certain that it will fill up fast. Call early and assure yourself of a choice table.

I came across an article in the New Year Times art section that described the transformation of Ellis Island into a museum. Ellis Island, of course, is the disembarkation point and the processing center for millions of im­ migrants who came to this country.

Lodge No. 142, Houston Youth Activities Planned

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club Meets

Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge No. 142, Houston held their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 4, 1990 at 6:30 p.m. There were eight members and five adults present; we also had Assis­ tant DYC Barbara Linney present at our meeting. We were glad to have her.

First of all, we all discussed that there were so many youth activities ahead. . We discussed the Family Day which was set for October 13 at Skrabanek's Park in Danbury. At this meeting, we worked on a poster representing our lodge and our activities we have had this year. Christmas ornament contest was due.

October 27, we will have a District V Halloween Party at our lodge at 6:30 p.m. Everyone surely began thinking of some great ideas for that day.

November 3, the youth club will be having a garage sale at the lodge. We will be asking for any items if you wish to donate them for our fund­ raiser. More details will be available at a later date regarding this project.

For November 10, we discussed our District V train trip to Galveston. We will be leaving downtown at 8:30 a.m.

It will be a whole day outing. The youth were reminded to bring money for their souvenirs if they wished to buy some.

On December 1, 1990 is the Christmas Pageant at the Methodist Church at 8 p.m. We will have pizza afterwards.

We had a lot of things to discuss and many activities coming up. Keep doing your Vestnik projects and selling the Gold C books.

We all enjoyed pizza after our meeting. See. you at the next meeting.

Seaton's Halloween Carnival

· The October 4, 1990 meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club was held at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

Flag Bearer Brian Kutach led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Youth Club Pledge was led by Sharon Borak.

Secretary Martha Bartos read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Danny Borak called the roll and collected dues.

Nine members and six adults were in attendance for the meeting; also at­ tending our meeting was Kevin Dluhos, a guest of Jared Dybala.

There was no old business.

Under new business, we discussed the upcoming District VI social to be held on October 28 in Sweet Home.

We will be performing and will have a ticket sales' booth. The Christmas or­ nament contest will also be held on this day.

A special meeting will be held on October 18 at 7 p.m. at WCEC. We will be practicing for our performance, Our charity project for the month was to collect tabs from soda cans.

They will be donated to a friend of one of our members who can use them to "buy" time on a dialysis machine.

Our next project will be Thanksgiv­ ing centerpieces for the local nursing home.

Members brought decorated pumpkins to show at the meeting.

Those who participated were Brian Kurach, Martha Bartos, and I. At our next meeting, we will create any kind of turkey from paper and bring it to be judged.

The meeting was adjourned. Door prizes were won by all and refresh­ ments were served by Mrs. Karasek.

After the meeting, the youth enjoyed completing puzzles as well as doing crafts.

Our next meeting will be held on November 8 at 7 p.m. at WCEC, and Mrs. Krpec will serve refreshments.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, October 21st, the Hal­ loween Carnival and Hayride will be held; hamburgers will be sold begin­ ning at 6:30 p.m. At this time, there will be games for the younger youth.

There will be a spookhouse for the young and old, a contest for the best costume will be held for the young and adults.

The evening will conclude with · a hayride.

SPJST Youth Club of Lodge 40 held their monthly meeting on October 4, 1990 at Commercial State Bank Gold Room at 7 p.m.

President Kim Kacal called the meet­ ing to order.

Flag Bearer Brian Kutach led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Youth Club Pledge.

We had nine members, five adults and one guest, Kevin Dluhos, present.

Brother Stavinoha was a well-known businessman in the area and was owner of Lad-Pak, Inc. and Ladďs Zero Market for 52 years.

He was preceded in death by one son, Sidney Joe Stavinoha.

Survivors include his wife (of 56 years) Frances Stavinoha of Needville; two daughters, Ladele Duyka and hus­ band, Jody of Needville, Sandra Hartfiel and husband, Jerrel of Need­ ville; one son, Dennis Stavinoha and wife, Dorothy of Needville; three sisters, Mary Gurecky, Viola Hundel and Eleanor Ernest, all of Rosenberg; two brothers, Evan Stavinoha, Sr. of Fairchild and Al. Stavinoha of Rosen­ berg; also nine grandchildren.

Brother Kutac was born July 21, 1924 in St. John's community to John and Antonia (Staha) Kutac. He and Martha Irene Kahanek were married ori October 3, 1944 in Moravia, Texas.

Brother Kutac was a dairy farmer, member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of SPJST and AMPI. Survivors include his wife, Martha Irene Kutac of Freyburg; daughter, Linda (Kutac) Charanza of Schulen­ burg; three sons, Ernest J. Kutac, Den­ nis W. Kutac and John W. Kutac, Jr., all of Schulenburg; two sisters, Annie Hermis of Houston and Viola Hermis of Schulenburg; three brothers, Julius Kutac, Sr. of Schulenburg, Jerome Kutac, Sr. of Schulenburg and Ervin Kutac, Sr. of Weimar; also seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Antonia Kutac.

Pallbearers were Ernest Hermis, Al­ fonse Hermis, Jr. and Douglas Messer of Houston, Randy Schwirtlice of Corpus Christi, Ronnie Brossmann and Leon Kubenka of Schulenburg.

Honorary pallbearers were Alton Kutac of Weimar and Lawrence Kutac of Houston, all nephews.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

also presented stage plays in the Czech language for more than one organiza­ tion although their prime affiliation was with SOKOL HOUSTON. She was active with this group from late fall of 1938 through the war years until about 1950.

During this time, it was not uncom­ mon to be practicing for more than one play at one time. Her dramatic skills were not only recognized through play attendance, but by Nina Vance, U of H

After her husband's injury in a Decemer 1951 industrial accident, she became the family nurse. After more than two years of care of her husband, she had to care for and give therapy to her husband; she also had to care for her mother in the early sixties, then her father became ill and she had to take care of him. After her father passed away, she, again, had to care for her mother. This went on, off and on, through the passing away of her husband in 1981.

In late 1986, she had to take care of ber sister, Ann. This last case took its toll, even though her sister passed away in July 1988, for ber health went down to a point that she was placed into a hospital on Sepember 25, 1989.

She came out of the hospital but never regained her health.

On September 17th this year, she was admitted to the hospital through emergency conditions. Although her condition was stabilized for a short time, she could not regain her strength and on September 24th she became comatose never to regain conscious­ ness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister and .one brother.

She is survived by her son, Joseph D. Nezval; one brother, William V. Foitik of Floresville, Texas and one sister, Frances Chapman of Cape Coral, Florida.

Funeral arrangements and graveside service, under the direction of Davis­ Dawson of Rosenberg, were held at the Czech National Cemetery in East Ber­ nard, Texas at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 1990 with Vestnik Editor Rudy J. Sefcik officiating under the auspices of the SPJST Society.

Features· Nationality Conflicts In The Czechoslovak Federated Republic

Moravians are very proud of their land, but not at all in a chauvinistic way. In fact, Moravians sometimes seem too good-natured and guileless.

Moravia was the center of a Great Moravian state which existed until the early 10th century. The political, cul­ tural and religious implications of Great Moravia were so vast that much of Moravia's subsequent political development pales in comparison.

Throughout history Moravians often seemed to be waiting patiently for the return of another Great Moravia. Their neighbors frequently took advantage of this apocalyptic detachment.

Moravia's subsequent political development was often tied to that of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Yet Moravia enjoyed the status of margravate and her development was not entirely iden­ tical with Bohemia's. During the 19th century there existed two contrasting schools of thought and interpretations of history in Moravia: a liberalism largely dependent on the Czech Na­ tional Awakening centered in Prague and a more conservative regional patriotic movement based in Brno and Olomouc. The former movement gained the upper hand. In this century Moravia has experienced progressive absorption as a Czech region, losing much of her language and folk culture in the process. Moravians today point out wistfully that the national symbol contains no Moravian eagle. They regret that they have no national an­ them, or rather they joke that the Moravian anthem is the world's shortest: it is the pause between the Czech and Slovak halves of the nation­ al hymn of Czechoslovakia. I was somewhat surprised to hear these opinions expressed openly. It was im­ possible to say such thing before the November revolution.

A political movement working to secure some form of Moravian­ Silesian autonomy within the existing framework of the Czechoslovak state has been established in Moravia and Silesia. In the recent elections to the Czech parliament, this party came in third place, after Obcanske forum and the communists. Known as the Move­ ment for Autonomous Democracy -­ The Society for Moravia and Silesia, this group claims that it does not desire the creation of a separate Moravian-Silesian state, but only desires to achieve a degree of autonomy and self-government within the existing state.

Visiting Czechoslovakia this past summer, I encountered a great deal of political apathy. After the initial ex­ citement which followed the Novem­ ber revolution, some people have become discouraged by unpleasant economic truths which the communists had managed to conceal. People fully realize that it will take ten years, maybe a generation, before Czechos­ lovakia reintegrates itself within Europe and raises its standard of living. Faced with unemployment and anxiety about the future, some people,

chiefly the elderly and those living in the countryside, voted for the com­ munists in the past election. Part of the opposition to Moravian and Slovak demands springs from political apathy and fatigue. People · are reluctant to tamper any further with a system they know to be dangerously fragile. And many are simply tired of hearing about politics. They managed to endure the communistregime for forty years only by turning their backs on politics and losing themselves ín their own per­ sonal and family pursuits.

A bright side to Czechoslovak politics is Vaclav Havel. Yet though he is admired and respected throughout the world, Havel has come under criticism in his own country.

Despite the qualities of courage and determination he exhibited as Czechoslovak's leading dissident, he has little practical experience as a politician. He declared a general am­ nesty in Czechoslovakia's jails, which freed .not only political prisoners but also hardened criminals. Czechos­ lovakia experienced a violent and dramatic crime wave before the am­ nestied criminals were apprehended in new offences and reíncarcerated.

Havel was also widely criticized for stating that those Germans deported from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War were wronged and are due an apology. Havel offended neighbor­ ing Poles by first visiting Germany, and at a time when German Chancellor Kohl had cowardly suggested that the German-Polish border might someday be up for renegotiation, before making a visit to Poland. Yet despite his lack of political acumen, Havel seems genuinely respected by Czechs, Moravians and Slovaks. Even Moravians and Slovaks pushing for greater autonomy for their nations respect Vaclav Havel.

It is said that the twenty-year period of the First Republic was not enough to teach the people of Czechoslovakia democracy. And after forty years of communist rule, most people today have only a very vague idea how democracy works. In many ways, the mentality of the people has changed little since the days of Austrian rule.

Formerly, the picture of the Austrian emperor hung in every Czech school and office. Even Tomas Masaryk, first president of Czechoslovakia, was a figure beyond all reproach for most Czechs. Czechs and Slovaks have often regarded the leader of their country as one who was put into office by divine forces. In recent decades Gustav Husak was such a figure.

Today Vaclav Havel's picture hangs everywhere in schools and public of­ fices. One wonders if the Czechs truly regard him as their elected leader or merely as another emperor who rules with or without the consent of the governed. It seemed to me that the people of Czechoslovakia are a little bit lazy in their politics. Will this democracy business catch on in Czechoslovakia and elsewhere in East­ ern Europe? We shall see with time.

Czechoslovakia today finds itself in an unenviable position. Overthrowing the communist regime seems easy compared with the effort which will be required to bring the country up to the standards of a free-market European democracy. Today Czechoslovakia stands at least four decades behind Western Europe in economic and political development. The immense economic problems are aggravated by nationality conflicts which were stiffly repressed under the communists.

While some of these conflicts might have been resolved under a democratic system, they only intensified under

communism. If nationality conflicts in Czechoslovakia are not so likely to be­ come violent as in Romania and Bul­ garia, tensions do exist between Czechs and Slovaks and Czechs and Moravians. Slovakia's Hungarian minority is agitating for annexation within Hungary. It is ironic that as the other nations of Europe strive to form a single community, Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union are paralyzed by nationality conflicts that were thought to have been extinguished decades ago. The future of Europe, of course, is in. the peaceful resolution of such conflicts. Only after airing out these long-surpressed questions and reach­ ing equitable solutions will Eastern Europe get itself on the right track to reintegration into Europe.

Moravia and Silesia After The November Revolution

Last November's Velvet Revolution brought about great changes throughout Czechoslovakia. The vic­ tory of Vaclav Havel and the Citizens Forum movement in the elections this past June insured that the old com­ munist system would finally be dis­ mantled and replaced by something more humane. The rejection of com­ munism, not only in Czechoslovakia but elsewhere in Eastern Europe as well, means that the centralized politi­ cal and economic policies previously enforced by Moscow throughout the world region are being abandoned for greater measures of local autonomy.

Long repressed resentment at tightly centralized communist control has erupted in recent months in the regions of Moravia and Slovakia. Local populations there are attempting to take greater control of the political and economic policies which affect their respective regions.

I was pleased to note a sense of en­ thusiasm shown by the citizens of Brno this past summer as I studied in their city. To be sure, some of the population has grown weary since November of all the talk about politics and the gloomy economic forecasts which accompany such talk. Yet people generally showed great en­ thusiasm for the changes. They also showed a willingness to endure the economic hardships which lie ahead and a deep patriotic feeling. The people of Brno and other Moravians spoke enthusiastically about their president Vaclav Havel, about their country, and perhaps, most intensely, about their region. Much of the politi­ cal conversation in Brno centered on questions about the future of Moravia and Silesia.

Though the name of the region seems to be vanishing from modern maps, Moravia is found in the central section of Czechoslovakia. Together with the extreme southeastern comer of the his­ torical land of Silesia, this area today comprises two of the seven regions of the Czech Republic. (Under a federated system, the Slovak Republic administers its own internal affairs in­ dependently of the Czech Republic.)

Moravia and that section of Silesia found today within Czechoslovakia together account for one quarter of that country's land mass.

Among foreigners Moravia is per­ haps best known to historians of East­ ern Europe who are familiar with Great Moravia. That Slavic state en­ compassed the territories of modem

Wednesday, October 17, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/ll Czechoslovakia and Hungary, as well as parts of Poland, Austria and Yugos­ lavia, before its destruction in the early tenth century. Moravia, a sub­ sequent development was often closely related to that of neighboring Bohemia, although Moravia enjoyed an independent status and Moravians guarded their freedoms fiercely. The region of Silesia had formed a part of both the Polish and Czech kingdoms. . Austrian Empress Maria Theresa lost most of Silesia to Prussia in 1742 and retained only the southeastern comer with the towns of Opava, T~Jín and Frýdek. The development of this part of Silesia was closely related to that of neighboring Moravia.

Under the influence of the European movements . of romanticism and nationalism, Moravia came to be divided by the second half of the 19th century by questions concerning her future course of political development.

Two schools of thought proposed two different Moravian programs. One group led by historian František Palacký identified Moravia's history and culture as essentially Czech. This group included many liberals and progressives and they discouraged any separatist tendencies among Moravians. These men believed that Moravia's political and cultural future lay in a union with Bohemia. They looked to cosmopolitan Prague for in­ spiration and worked closely with leaders of the Czech National Revival in Bohemia. Later led by Czechos­ lovak President Thomas G. Masaryk, this group with its practical political goals won out over those who dreamed of an independent Moravia.

The second group of Moravians stressed the distinctness of their region and identified this distinctness as Moravian rather than Czech. More conservative in thought than the Prague group, many belonged to the ranks of the clergy. Though Brno and Olomouc were important centers of this movememt, along with Velehrad, Hostýn and Radho°št, the outlook of these men was more provincial and less sophisticated than those Moravians who had ties to Prague. The basis of their program lay in a rather idealistic Pan-Slavism and Cyrile­ Methodianism. Representative of this group were men such as Archbishop Antonín Stojan and composer Leoš Janaček.

Discussion about the "Czechness" of Moravia, Silesia and even Slovakia was complicated by an absence of any sophisticated concept of national iden­ tity among the common people. Many Moravians had never given any thought to the question of which nationality they belonged to. Under Austrian rule, most Moravians iden­ tified themselves as Slavic or Moravian. Thomas G. Masaryk as a schoolboy registered his nationality as Slavic. It was only later that Masaryk and other Moravians came to identify themselves as Czech.

Other Moravians, particularly in the eastern regions of Moravia, never accepted this. The situation in Silesia was even more complicated. Silesians identified themselves either as Polish, Czech, "Moravians," German or Silesian.

Into the 20th century, some Moravians and Silesians continued to insist that their language and culture were not Czech. Efforts were made to create separate Moravian and Silesian literary languages, although these were rigidly surpressed under the com­ munists .. Yet this was essentially a political problem, as Masaryk and others understood. Neither Bohemia nor Moravia could stand alone in

Europe without the other. It was simp­ ly not possible for Moravia to exist as a separate nation. The situation in Slovakia was somewhat different. Al­ though some Czechs still today insist that the Slovak culture and language are actually Czech, no Slovaks agree with this. Two distinct nationalities and languages are officially recog­ nized today in Czechoslovakia: Czech and.Slovak, Moravia contains several distinct ethnographic areas which correspond to ancient tribal divisions over a thousand years old. The regions of western and central Moravia, Horacko and Haní, are clearly linked by lan­ guage and folk culture to Bohemia.

These areas are both Moravian and Czech in character.

In eastern Moravia there are the regions of Slovácko, Valašsko and Lašsko, areas much less Czech than western Moravia. One of Europe's most colorful regions, Moravian Slovacko is found in southeastern Moravia near the Slovak border. Until not long ago the people of Slovácko, as indicated in the name, considered themselves to be Slovak. It is only in recent decades, as the Czech language and traditions finally take root in Slovácko, that Moravian Slovaks have become Czech at least in some degree.

Slovácko is known for its wine and folklore.

North of Slováck;o lies ValaŠ.c;ko, a region which also has close ties to Slovakia. The people of Valašsko are not purely of Moravian stock. Parts of Valašsko and areas to the north were settled as late as the 16th century by shepherds from Slovakia, Poland, Ruthenia and possibly Romania.

Valašsko, like much of neighboring Slovakia, was a poor mountainous region which periodically experienced waves of emigration to more hospitable areas.

To the north of Valašsko, located partly in Moravia and partly in Silesia, lies Lašsko, the least Czech in charac­ ter of all the Moravian regions. LaŠsko historically formed a transition zone between Moravian and Polish culture and was additionally influenced by the culture of neighboring Slovakia and by Valach colonists. Parts of La~sko were in the past claimed by Poland, al­ though it seems that this matter is set­ tled today. Similarly, some Slovak scholars have identified other parts of eastern Moravia as Slovak. Under communist rule, little discussion was allowed on topics such as these. The Czechness of Moravia's eastern regions was never allowed to be ques­ tioned. The communist government ex­ pected all scholarly work to confirm the official nationalities policies.

Moravia and Silesia have undergone dramatic change in the past century.

Emigrants who left these lands then would likely not recognize them today.

Southern Moravia, with its fertile fields, vineyards and wine cellars, has been fortunate in avoiding many of the unpleasant side affects of industrial development. Many people associate this region with all the best that Moravia has to offer: sunny days, wonderful Moravian wine and friendly people. Northem Moravia and Silesia have been less fortunate. One of the major centers of Czechoslovak in­ dustry is found in the Ostrava area, "Black Ostrava" as it is aptly named.

Covered with coal mines, mills, smokestacks and factories, the Ostrava region is a frightful example of how far human beings can go in destroying · the environment. After arriving in Ostrava by automobile, I stepped out of the car and with my first breath of air found it difficult to breathe there.

The air is a· mixture of coal dust and other pollutants which only oc­ casionally allow the sun to shine through. This part of Czechsolovakia, with its mountains and forests, was once one of the most beautiful.

A century ago emigrants were leav­ ing the poor parts of eastern Moravia and Silesia, migrating to America and elsewhere. The Ostrava area with time was repopulated with workers from Bohemia, Slovakia and other parts of Moravia as labor was required for developing industry. In northwestern Moravia a major population shift took place after the Second World War. As the western tip of the so-called Sudetenland, this area had been popu­ lated by Germans since the Middle Ages. After the war the Germans were deported for their pro-Nazi activities and new settlers were brought in from other parts of Czechoslovakia. Thus much of Silesia and northern Moravia experienced a dramatic population shift in recent decades. This meant the disruption of the tradional way of life in the villages and the loss of many local traditions. Ostrava is today one of Europe's great industrial blights, like Katowice in nearby Polish Silesia and Košice in Slovakia. The Ostrava region represents the mistakes of com­ munist central planning, where all thought for the environment and decent living conditions was sacrificed to industrial development.

If Moravia as a region has a capital city today, it is Brno. While Olomouc, less than fifty miles to the north, often in the past vied with Brno for the honor of Moravian metropolis, Brno holds that title today. Brno is quiet, charming city of 400,000 located in south central Moravia. The inhabitants of Brno show a great affection for their city. They boast that the girls of Brno are the most beautiful in all Czechoslovakia.

Brno was formerly the second largest city in Czechoslovakia, until Bratislava's growth was artificially ac­ celerated to surpass Brno. This was done for political considerations, decided by politicians in smoke-filled rooms somewhere in Prague or Bratis­ lava. The people of Brno sigh with regret when they speak about this, or about their former airport, which was converted to a military airport. They complain that Czech newspapers ig­ nore all happenings in Brno and that Brno has been forced into the position of a provincial town to satisfy Czech and Slovak political purposes. The people of Brno blame many of their city' s problems on "Prague centralism." Not surprisingly Brno is . the center of a new movement which desires, among other things, the estab­ lishment of an independent Moravian­ Silesian legistative body to decide all questions of regional government.

The Movement for Autonomous Democracy -- The Society for Moravia and Silesia (henceforth referred to as MAD-SMS), came in third place in the June elections for the Czech Federal Assembly. Only Citizens' Forum and the communists received more votes, which came as a surprise to many throughout Czechoslovakia. Moravians are generally not at all thought of as nationalistic and many people were surprised that Moravians cast their votes for MAD-SMS rather than for traditional parties such as the Christian Democracs.

The strength of MAD-SMS's popularity was seen this year in April in a large demonstration held in .

gram that calls for limited Moravian­ Silesian autonomy within the existing state. Economic considerations are also a part of MAD-SMS's programs, as Moravians and Silesians claim that at disproportionate share of their con­ tributions to the state are returned to them. Some are demanding that Moravia and Silesia be represented in the Czechoslovak state symbol and an­ them. The current anthem consists of Czech and Slovak hymns. The current state symbol includes a Czech lion and a Slovak double barred cross.

While many members of MAD-SMS are enthusiastic about President Havel, they are sometimes impatient with his lack of political skills. Havel himself has stated that he believes Moravians and Silesians have the right to greater autonomy, but so far nothing has been done in Prague to implement this. As I departed Moravia at the end of August, parts of southern Moravia threatened to call a general strike if some conces­ sions to the demands for limited Moravian autonomy were not met.

Many Moravians expressed impatience with the Prague government. All political parties were preparing for elections in November. . It is not known how the political ten­ sions in Moravia and Silesia will be resolved. It is unfortunate that, as much of Europe is attempting to unite as a single community, Moravia and other parts of Eastern Europe are con­ cerned with redressing past injuries that were repressed under communist rule. During my stay in Czechos­ lovakia, I was particularly interested in what Czechs, Moravians, Silesians and Slovaks had to say about the current political situation. Czechoslovakia's main problem seems to be with the tensions that exist between Czechs and Slovaks. I jokingly suggested to some Moravians that the only solution to Czechoslovakia's nationality conflicts was to construct a new city to serve as capital, somewhere in the geographic center of the country. Such a spot would lie in Moravia, the heart of Czechoslovakia. It is interesting to note that when the Czechoslovak state was created in 1918, it was suggested that the new country be named Great Moravia. It is in Moravia that one finds the best qualities of the Czechs and Slovaks. It would seem that in Moravia some solution to the problems between Czechs and Slovaks could be found.

In Brno I met a gentleman who seemed to me to embody what is going on today in that region. Rudolf Lapčík operates a kiosk near the main train station in Brno, which he mans for several hours each morning. I didn't ask how he finances this, but I as­ sumed that this was for him a work of love. In the kiosk he sells or gives away various political, patriotic and religious materials which he has had printed. He has bright posters depict­ ing the Pope's recent visit to Velehrad, illustrated Bible tales for children and postcards of the Moravian patron saints, Cyril and Methodius.

A former pupil of Moravian in­ dustrialist Thomas Bata, Mr. LapcÍk published a booklet about Thomas Bata, Jr. 's return to Zlín in December, 1989. The Batas were feared and hated by the communists, as much as they were loved and respected by the people of Zlín. When I approached Mr. LapČÍk's kiosk in Brno to buy some postcards, he asked where I was from. Apparently he knew something about Moravians in Texas, possibly he has some kin there. Full of surprise and enthusiasm, he instructed me to (Continued On Page 15)

Vlajky nastolili James Kortis a Gary Škrabánek.

Návštěvy jsme měli soudce (Judge) Pemberton, Jack Jones, Della Marinek a Freddy Schroeder.

Nemocnéčlenyjsme měli sestry Olga Mikesková, Ruth Kohutková a Johnie Vaníček.

Noví členovétento měsícjsou Johnie a Theresa Klečkovi, Amanda Ming, Barton Ming a Wayne Hoelscher.

Protokol z minulé schůze byl čten a byl přijat tak, jak by napsán.

Sestra Judy Pechalová podala zprávu za dozorčí výbor a Tim Reese oznámil že· "Family Night" bude 21. října a "Halloween Carnival" v 6 hodin a "Hayride" v 8 hodin.

Zprávy úředníků byly dobré.

"Fraternalist" tento rok je Dolores Škrabánková.

Vedoucí mládeže měla 32 členů, pět dopelých a tři návštěvníky. · Narozeninybudou slavit: Joe a Della Marinek, Ruth Janáček a Laura Peoples.

Výročí sňatku budou mít Joe a Della Marinek, Edward a Lucy Mihatsch, Robert a Evelyn Heese, Wallace a Elsie Jez a Calvin a Dolores Škrabánek.

Dveřní ceny dostali John Hruška, Laura-Peoples a Evelyn Heese.

Po schůzi jsme měli dobrou svačinku; sestrám, které přineslydobré sladkosti, děkujeme!

Milé sestry a bratři: Naše minulá schůze, která se konala 16. září začala ve 2 hodiny 5 minut.

Bratr Trilíček - president našeho řádu zahájil schůzi, bylo přítomno 27 členů a 7 hostů.

Tajemnice řádu Jarolyn Poppová přečetla zprávy z minulé schůze a také podala finanční zprávy a vše bylo při­ jato beze zmeny.

Sestra Viola Kurtzová oznámila, kterí členové slavili svatební vyročí v měsícizáři: Tom and Doris Moczygem­ ba (47 roků), Alvin a Frances Šimček (44 roky), Ed a Frances Kappleman (37 roků) a Bill a Frankie Campbell (34 roků).

Bratr Emil Matula, který je předsedou výboru našeho památníku přinesl obrázky z památníku, které by­ ly dvojité a členové si je mohli vzít.

Já jsem dostala dopis od Marcely a JarkyKleprlikovych;byli oba v nemoc­ nici, ale teď už se cítí dobře a jsou zase v domě odpočinku, pozdravují všechny členy a sestra Marcela čte Věstník od začátku do konce a hlavně jí moc

17. řijna 1990 zajímá co se děje v našich schůzích,tak ona čte anglicky i český popis našich schůzí.

Bratr a sestra Matula je navštívili před dvěma týdny a byli spokojeni s je­ jich zdravotním stavem.

Byli jsme rádi, že sestra Julia Šefčíkovánás potěšila její přítomností, doufáme že zůstane zdráva a přijde příští měsíc zase na schůzi.

Sestra Alma Trilíčková navrhla, aby jsme měli společný oběd v říjnu, bratr Joe Špacek to podporoval a tak jsme o tom hlasovali a všichni členové to schválili.

Oběd bude podáván ve 12 hodin 30 minut, řád obstará maso a nápoje a prosíme sestry, aby donesly příkrm a pečivo.

Na listě nemocnýchbyl náš president bratr Trilíček, namohl si lýtko ale brzy se uzdravil, trochu kulhal ale to nevadilo, hlavní věc, že byl na schůzi.

Připomňel všem členům aby nezapomňeli pracovat na původu rodu (Family Tree) a kolik hodin věnovali každý měsícna dobrovolnou bratrskou činnost. .Narozeniny v měsícizáří měli: Louis a Theresa Jašek, Marie Netková, Carmen Mazačová, Jakob Špaček a Jerome Špaček. Dvěřní cenu vyhráli: 1Joe Špaček, 2- Evelyn Matula a 3Viola Kurtzová. "Split the Pot" l-Emil Rohan a 2-Alma Triličková.

Protože už nebylo nic jiného na pro­ jednání sestra Viola Fajkusová navrhla, aby schůze byla skončena a bylo to podporováno sestrou Phelpsovou.

Následovala dobrá svačina, měli jsme obkládané chlebíčky, které připravili bratr a sestra Spaček a byly moc dobré a sladké pečivo, které sestry přinesly.

Naše příští schůze bude v neděli 21. října, oběd bude podáván ve 12 hodin 30 minut.

Slovensku v Nitře.) Pletichář Wiching nakonec docílil vyslání Svatoplukova důvěrníka Jana z Benátek do Říma v roce 879 se ztížností jménem vladaře proti Metodějovi. Tato ztížnost k papeži Janu VIII jednak protestovala proti Metodějova používání slovanskéhojazyka při bohoslužbách a jednak též tvrdila, že Metoděj nehlásá křesťanství přesně tak jak říká bible.

Mimochodem: kněz Jan z Benátek byl, dle historických záznamů z roku 874 v historickém německém městě Fuldě, Svatoplukovýmrepresentantem na mírových jednáních mezi Velkou Moravou a Němci ve Forchheimu v Bavorsku. -- Historické město Fulda se slavným opatstvím bylo dočasným domovem mnoha českými slovenským protikomunistickým uprchlíkům v roce 1948.

Svatoplukův posel se vrátil z Říma koncem roku 879 a z jara příštího roku se vydal na cestu do Říma Metoděj.

Svatopluk vyslal ve stejnou dobu do Říma nové poselství vedené jeho rádcem Zemežiznem;v této delegacise též nacházel Wiching. Tato delegace doufala, že Metoděj bude odsouzen a zbaven Velkomoravského arcipastýřství, které převezme zlotřilý německý kněz Wiching. Metoděj se však skvěle obhájil a tak byl papežem Janem VIII slavnostně potvrzen ve svém úřadě Metropolity Velké Moravy. Papež Jan VIII však učinil neblahý kompromis mezi Svatoplukem a Metodějem tím, že na Svatoplukovo přání nechal vysvětit Wichinga biskupem v Nitře. Nehodný kněz Wiching totiž již před Metodějovým úmrtím využíval svého nového postavení k soustavnému ničení slovanskýchmisií na Velké Moravě.

Zatím co Metoděj se zdržel se svou družinou na zpáteční cestě na Moravu v Chorvatsku tak Svatoplukovo poselství spěchalo rychle domů.

Metodějovy nepřítomnosti využil teď Wiching k tvrzení, že on, místo Metoděje, byl nastolen na arcibiskupský stolec na Velké Moravě.

K tomuto účelu měl dokonce i padělek papežova psaní potvrzujícího tyto nepravdy. Arcibiskup Metoděj musil proto po svém návratu psát do Říma papeži Janu VIII, který ve své odpovědi s datem 23. března 881 znovu potvrzuje sv.

Metoděje velkomoravským metropolitou a zdůrazňuje chystanou důtku (Věnováno posmrtné vzpomínce na Wichingovi i s potrestáním pro jeho vlasteneckého českého Texana, tvrdohlavost ----. biskupa Jana Ludv. Mořkovského, k · Metoděj ztrávil poslední roky svého jeho nedožitým jednaosumdesátým života především hlásáním víry na narozeninám 16. srpna tohoto roku.) pastýřských cestách ve všech částech Velkomoravské říše. V roce 882 -- tři Sepsal John J. Karas z Houstonu. roky před svým úmrtím -- podnikl též cestu do Cařihradu. Tu byl přijat s Desítidílnýčlánek -- pátá cást. velkými poctami jak tamějším byzanským císařem Basilem I' Pokračování z minulého Věstníku.

(867-886),tak patriarchou Photiusem.

Císař Basil I si vyžádal z Metodějovy Pokud byl Svatopluk živ, zůstal družiny před návratem na Moravu jed­ nepoznán ode všech. Teprve když cítil, noho kněze a jednoho jáhna, jelikož že se blíží hodina jeho, sám se potřeboval slovansky mluvící mnichům vyznal a pověděl, kdo by byl misionáře k hlásání křesťanství v a proč sem přišel. A hned umřel jest.

Srbsku. Sv. Metoděj se chtěl pak ještě Vraťme se nyní z Jiráskovy legendy vydat na cestu do Říma k papež k Svatoplukově vládě. Z německých Marinovi II, (pravděpodobně misionářů působících na území představit Svatému Otci Gorazda, Velkomoravské říše byl nejvíc proti Metodějem vybraného pokračovatele Metodějovi kněz Wiching, který měl na apoštolské práce soluňských bratří na Svatopluka značný vliv. (Svatopluk velké Mroavě), ale choroba mu tuto chtěl ho na příklad mít biskupem na cestu zabránila.

K letošímu 1105 výročí úmrti sv.

Metoděje.

Při zmínce o Metodějově apoštolské práci vraťme se nyní k roku 874, kdy po sjednání míru s Němci ve For­ chheimu v Bavorsku, Svatopluk měl "volnou roku" k rozšíření Velkomoravskéříše na sever, východ a jih. Nové území připojené k Velké Moravě na severovýchodě bylo Powislí, kde pak arcibiskup Metoděj pokřtil vládce této krajiny. Vykopávky v polské Wislici v roce 1960 odkrytím kostela a dalších církevníchstaveb z 9. století dokázaly, že křesťanství částečně proniklo do Polska již během cyrilometodějské éry. Na sklonku svého života Metoděj působil též v povodí řek Drávy a Sávy, v nově připo­ jeném území na jihu k Velké Moravě, mezi Chorvaty, v nynější Jugoslávii.

Hned v roce 874, po skončeníválky s Němci, Svatopluk si podrobil slovanské kmeny sídlící na území pozdějších Čech -- zejména kmen Cechů usazení po levém břehu dolní Vltavy, který dal této zemi svá jméno.

Bořivoj, kníže tohoto kmene, byl pokřtěn spolu se svou 30 člennou družinou arcibiskupem Metodějem na Velehradě;jeho žena, kněžna Ludmila, byla pokřtěna s mnoha příslušníky českéhokmene za návštěvyarcibiskupa Metoděje v Čechách. -- Místo křestu knížete Bořivoje a kněžny Ludmily má dvě ještě jiné verse. První verseříká, že český kníže Bořivoj a kněžna Ludmila byli pokřtěni sv. Metodějem, ar­ cibiskupem Velkomoravské říše, na Levém Hradci; druhá verse tvrdí, že knížecí manželé Bořivoj I a Ludmila byli pokřtěni na Velehradě, v sídle vládců Velké Moravy. (Viz můj dvoudílný článek "Historický Levý Hradec, místo národních poutí," vytištěný v SPJST Věstníku v srpnu 1989.)

Po návratu na Velkou Moravu z druhé cesty do Říma, Metoděj dle některých pramenů přeložil z řečtiny do staroslověnštiny takřka celý Starý Zákon; jiné prameny však tvrdí, že část Starého Zákona byla přeložena již dříve a Metoděj Starý Zákon pouze doplnil. Z několika jiných knih, jež dal v tuto dobu Metoděj dohromady, je nejznámější tak zvaný "Nomocanon" neboli Sbírka byzanských zákonů, skládající se z náboženské sekce (Canon) a laické sekce (Nomos). Svatý Metoděj přeložil též spisy zvané "Knihy otců", obsahující slovanská kázaní a instrukce k novoknězům k výkladům Písma. Řada těchto spisů se zachovala v hlaholském Kodexu, Glagolita Clozianu. (Clozianus Codex Paleoslovenicus glagoliticus, po prve vydal A. Dostál, Praha, 1959.)

Mezitím otevřené nepřatelství nitranského biskupa Wichinga a jeho vypovězení poslušnosti stařičkému velkomoravskému arcibiskupovi Metodějovi dosáhlo tako:vého stupně, že sv. Metoděj těsně před smrtí ex­ komunikoval Wichinga a několik jeho pomocníků. Jiná legenda z Moravy však říká, bez udání podrobností, že exkomunikace byla namířená proti Svatoplukovi, což konečně do jisté míry vyplýváz mnohem pozdější legen­ dy sepsané historikem Aloisem Jirár­ skem, kterou cituji v předešlé části tohoto mého článku.

Podívejme se nyní na překlad Josefa Vašicy závěru staroslovanského životopisu sv. Metoděje, napsaný po jeho smrti jeho učedníky.

17. řijna 1990-VĚSTNÍK/13 Závěr tohoto Metodějova životopisu s kresbou Alfonse Muchy, nazvanou "Smrt sv. Metoděje" byl vytištěn v Hlasu sv. Cyrila a Metoda o velikonocích. 1985 v Mnichově v Západním Německu. Toto číslo Hlasu sv. Cyrila a Metoda má na přední straně velkou, dobře zaostřenou fotografii busty sv. Metoděje z horního triforia katedrály sv. Víta v Praze, jež je uměleckou prací z dílny Petra Parléře z druhé poloviny 14. století.

Mimo právě zmíněné věty pod Metodějovou bustou je na přední straně tohoto čísla tato pietní připomínka: 6. dubna před 1100 lety zemřel svatý Metoděj. (Jak zmíněno pár řádků zezhora, číslo Hlasu sv.

Cyrila a Metoda o kterém píši, je z roku 1985.) Titul a text závěru Vašicova překladu staroslovanského životopisu sv. Metoděje je následující, (Citováno doslova.): V ruce tvé, Pane, poroučím svou Duši!

Potom starý nepřítel, závistník dobra a odpůrce pravdy, podnítil proti němu srdce krále, nepřítele moravského (tu je míněn německý císař Ludvík Němec), se všemi biskupy (tu jsou míněni němečtí biskupové), kteří pravili: "Učíš v naší eparchii." (tu je míněno v našem spravním uzemí, či v našich diecésích) .. On však odpověděl: "Kdybych byl věděl, že je vaše, byl bych ji pominul, ale je svatého Petra. A právem. Přecházíte li vy, z řevnosti a lakoty proti kánonům

přes staré hranice a tím bráníte učení Božímu, dejte si pozor, abyste svůj mozek nerozlili, budeti-li chtít kostěnou lebkou prorazit železnou horu. "Odpověděli mu hněvivě: "Zlým to odpykáš!" On odpověděl: "Mluvím pravdu před císaři a nestydím se. Vy však čiňte se mnou, co vám libo, neboť nejsem lepší než ti, kteří proto, že mluvili, co je spravedlivé, i o tento život přišli v mnohých mukách." Když mnoho řečí bylo chvatně prosloveno, aniž co zmohli proti němu, řekl král šibalsky: "Netrapte mého Metoděje, vždyť už se zpotil jako při peci." On řekl: "Tak jest, pane." Kdysi potkali lidé zpoceného filosofa a tázali se ho: "Pročpak se potíš?" On dí: "S hrubími lidmi jsem se přel." O tomto výroku se pohádali a rozešli. Jeho (Metoděje) pak vyhostili do Švábska a drželi ho tam půl třetího roku. (Ve vězení.)

Zpráva o tom pronikla k apostolikovi. (Apostolik = papež.)

Když se o tom dověděl, dal je do klat­ by, aby žádný z biskupů královských nezpíval mše čili služby, pokud by jej drželi ve vazbě. A tak jej pustili, ale řekli Kocelovi: "Budeš-li ho mít u sebe, tak snadno nám neunikneš."

(Poznámka pisatele tohoto článku: Kníže Kocel, sídlící v Blatnogradu na jihu velkého Blatenského jezera, nyní známého pod jménem Balaton, v dnešním Maďarsku, byl vasalem Svatopluka, vládce Velkomoravské řfše.) Zatím však oni sami neunikli soudu svatého Petra, neboť čtyři z těchto biskupů náhle zemřeli.

Stalo se tehdy, že Moravané zpozorovali, jak němečtí kněží u nich žijící jim nepřejí, ale kují proti nim pikle a proto je všechny vyhnali. A k apostolikovi vypravili poselství: "Poněvadž již dříve naši otcové přijali křest od sv. Petra, dej nám tedy Metoděje za arcibiskupa a učitele."

Apostolík jej tam ihned odeslal. I při­ jal jej Svatopluk se všemi Moravany a svěřil jeho péči všechny kostely a kleriky na všech hradech.

Od tohoto dne počalo učení Bozí velmi vzrůstat a kleriků přibývat na všech hradech, a pohané se zříkali svýchbludů a přijímali víru v pravého Boha. I moravská oblast se začala tím více šířit na všechny strany a úspěšně

porážet své nepřátele, jak sami vždy vypravují.

Byl u něho (u sv. Metoděje) také dar prorocký, neboť mnohé z jeho předpovědí se splnily. Uveďme z nich jednu nebo dvě. Jeden velmi mocný kníže pohanský sídlící na Visle tupil křesťany a činil jim násilí. Metoděj mu vzkázal po poslech: "Dobré ti bude, synu, dáš - li se pokřtít dobrovolně v své zemi, abys nemusel být pokřtěn násilně jako zajatec v cizí zemi. Pak si vzpomeň na mne." Tak se i stalo.

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pro­ noun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are ·seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: první pád- answers the questions: KDO- who? (is the doer of, or sub­ jected to, some action?); CO- what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex.: KDO tam chodí? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schůze se tam koná. Here schůze is in the nom. case.

GENITIVE Case- druhý pád, has a function similar to the English possessivecase, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONG­ ING. It answers the questions: Čeho? of what?' Čí? whose?

Ex.: Z čeho je to výraběne Ze železa a z litiny. Čí je to pučík? Je to pučík mého otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case), DATIVE Case- třetí pád, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act pro­ ceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone.

It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and ČEMU?, to what?

Ex.: Komu píšeš? Píšu domu tatínkovi. (Tatínkovi here is in the dative case). Čemu posloucháš Poslouchám vysilácí stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, or Direct object case- čtvrtý pád; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?

Ex.: Koho's tam viděl? Viděl jsem tam mého přítele. (přítele is in the acc. case).

Co tam vidíš? Vidím moji matku. (matku is in the acc. case) 5. VOCATIVE Case- pátý pád- is used for addressing or calling to a per­ son or a thing.

Ex.: Bratře Nováku!

Otče můj!

Matko má!

6. LOCATIVE, or prepositional­ šestý pád; is always used with preposi­ tions. 11 cannot stand alone. It ex­ presses position in time or space. It answers the questions KDE? where? O kom? About whom? O čem? About what?

Ex.: Kde je Marie? Sedí na schodech. (na schodech is in the lac. case) O kom mluvíš? Mluvímo tetičce. (C tetičce is in the lac. case) O čem se jed­ nalo? Jednalo se o různých bodech. (o různých bodech is in the lac. case) 7. INSTRUMENTAL- sedmý pád - expressesthe means, way, manner, instrument, or casual condition. It answers the questions (s) kým? with whomř, (s) čím? with what?

Ex.: Čím jel do Ameriky? Letěl letadlem. (letadlemis in the instr. case). S kýmjsi letěl? Letěl jsem se sestrou Anču. (se sestrou Anču here defines the "man­ ner" in which the flight was made). Čím si psal? Pišu tužkou. Čistím ša­ ty kartačem. Jel jsem· vlakem.

Pomáháme příkladem. Zemřel hladem. Stal se lékařem. Dům byl zničen bombou. Zde to voní růžmi.

Jděte tuto cestou. Zvolili ho předsedou.

All of the above endings are in the instrumental case.

Assignment Construct a sentencein each of the 7 cases, answering the word functions in each case. Go back to the nominative case, and write sentences answering KDO, and CO?, etc., and then con­ tinue.

Translate the followingproverbs: 1. Obecenstvo je často až dětinské: tleská chvilkovému ohňostroji, a každodenního velkolepého východu slunce si ani nevšimne.

2. Nejkrásnější jitro nevrátí dne předešlého. Co uplynulo, se nikdy víc nevrátí.

The Vocative. Adverbs of Place.

1) When addressing a person we use a special case, the vocative. nouns ending in hard consonants take -e - pane! kamaráde! Karle! nouns ending in g, k, h, ch take -u - tatínku! soudruhu! hochu! nouns ending in soft consonants take -i - příteli! muži! nouns ending in -ec take -če - chlapče! otče! nouns ending in -a take -O - babičko! Aleno! Honzo!

Other nouns, all nouns in plural and all adjectives and pronouns have no special vocative form and use the nominative instead.

Observe: Marie! Pane Veselý. Paní Nováková! Studenti! Moře!

2) With the adverbs of place we dif­ ferentiate two 'forms: one expressing motion (combined with the verbs ex­ pressing motion or direction, e.g. jdu, běžím, dívám se, ptšu, etc.) the other expressing no motion, position (com­ bined with verbs like jsem, sedim, stojůn, ležim, etc.).
