For some time now, we have had monthly pictures of "Applications and Earned Premiums" sales repre. · sentatrves on t l1e f ront page of our Vestnik. These seem to be encouraging incentives for all of our sales representatives to try to increase their efforts.

Very frankly, our sales representatives should be very proud to . present our plans of msurance to anyone and we all know that a very high percentage of our population is • d• un d ermsure True, times are becoming harder when it comes to making "ends meet" financially, however, life insurance is . m . our every a muc h-nee de d necessity day life and planning for the future; that fact has been proven time and time again.

That, of course, is something our Insurance Department would have to work out.

Actually, something like this has been the objective included in our "GO alS and ob·jecnves · .. program an d even our actuary has suggested that each department of our Society adopt a program of how much income is . generated and the cost of producmg that income. It is not uncommon nowadays to hear people rejoicing in the fact that they are no longer young.

They feel that tremendous changes are taking place in the world and, try as they may, they cannot discern the shape of things to come.

The familiar grooves in which their ·& d · Iife has move are being plowed up.

They are bewildered; they are frightened· they see nothing ahead but confusion and rum.

Naturally such folks feel very sorry & ' 1 ' ror young peop e. They pity boys and girls of today, who as far as our gloomy friends can see, will never · & ' enJOY t he comtort an d secunty they have known. What is ahead for youth, they ask, but uncertainty and danger turmoil and strife.

They are so glad they are no longer young and so sorry for so many others who are.

Presently, no man can afford to be mediocre. All have the absolute duty to be come aware that they have a mis· th · · b sion to fulfill 1 , e mission to ecome still better than before, to do the seemingly impossible, in order, each in his own circle, to ease the lot of mankind.

To help nudge shoppers toward foods lower in fat and salt, the American Heart Association (AHA) is now allowing more than 100 foods to wear its new red, heart - shaped seal of approval. The stickered foods will appear on grocery shelves this month despite criticism by the Food and Drug Administration that the seals may lull people into eating more . than they should of an approved food. For now, canned and frozen vegetables, margarines, crackers and oils will carry the seal. SPJST Scholarship Guidelines General Scholarship Guidelines 1. SPJST awards $25,000 in scholarships annually. Additional scholarship funds are provided by memorials and contributions to the scholarship fund. A minimum of 50 - $500.00 scholarships are given each year.

2. Scholarships are awarded for four (4)-year colleges and Texas State Tech­ nical Institute (TSTI) schools.

3. Participants are graduating high school seniors, college undergraduates and persons completing a G.E.D. 4. Members are eligible if they have any insurance certificate or annuity in force for one full year prior to the date of application.

5. Membership must be in force for the duration of the scholarship.

6. Deadline for the initial scholarship information from March 1st.

Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek ( reported on the two rest homes and their latest improvements and changes.

Members voted to have the spring meeting in Elgin next year; that is Lodge No. 18. It will be up to their members to set the date, either the k1 (. (( \! third or fourth Sunday of March 1991.

First Vice President Dale Kessel reported on the day's activities, gave out instructions and information on what was going on that day.

Lodge No.1, Fayetteville Fayetteville Lodge No. 1 met on Saturday, September 29, 1990 at the SPJST Hall.

Upon adjournment of the business meeting, members sang several old­ time toe-tapping favorites which in­ cluded U studanky sedele, Cervena ruzicko and Louka zelena.

A delicious chili supper was served along with the scrumptious desserts which members brought.

Lodge No. 1 is happy to have John Minarcik as our newest and youngest member to date. John was born on May 10, 1990.

We would like to encourage everyone to acquire policies for their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. We are planning some excellent activities for the youth of this lodge. This is a gift which keeps giving to the enrichment of everyone involved. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Ed Riesner; the lodge members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member Mary Gladys Leigh.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved as read; cor­ respondence was also read and discussed.

Mary Ann Zátopek gave her report and the following new members were accepted into our lodge, Wilbur Gene Matous, Eddie Leon Hensley and Robert Gordon Steven. A warm wel­ come is extended to these new mem­ bers.

Pam Seidta Capps reported on the youth club activities.

Vice President Jerry Valchar and Sidney Kacir reported on state ac­ tivities. .

Member Jack Jones was present at this meeting and the lodge enjoyed his speech and presence.

On Sunday, September 16, 1990, a shower was given for Paige Grady, a sweet little girl, by Margaret Allbrit­ ton, Dorothy Pflughaupt, Clara Broz, Doris Knapick, Bernice Wahlberg and.

Pat Neskorik at the SPJST Lodge No. 88. It was a very nice miscellaneous shower, many valuable gifts, an incen­ tive to cook good meals for Eddie.

The children of Loraine and Victor Krutilek had an open house in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, September 23rd. On Saturday, September 22, Victor and Loraine renewed their marriage vows before Mass at All Saints Catholic Church, which was a very moving occasion.

They are SPJST members and Vic was employed at Hilsher's Home Supply for many years.

Victor and Loraine, we wish you many more happy, healthy years.

I was told that Bennie Kocich had a birthday last weekend. Bennie, Stacie and their children had a dinner out.

They told me Bennie was "holding," which didn't tell me too much. If you watch him dance those polkas, your guess is as good as mine. Happy Birthday, Bennie!

Ed and Ellen Miculka were in Ohio recently to attend Ellen's family reunion and also her class reunion.

They reported they had nice cool weather, and Ed said he had a great time with those "Yankee" cousins.

After resting for several weeks, they took off again for Nevada with Celes­ tine and Rudy Darilek for another en­ joyable trip. Listen to this! I understand that they took music, quilt patches, crocheting, tatting, and embroidery material along. Now, I don't know who of the four did what.

They are all back home now and plan­ ning for more journeys in the future.

The Amazing And Faithful Few Of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena The other night I couldn't sleep and woke up about 3 a.m. in the morning and for some reason I began to think of some friends of mine from Lodge No. 172.

I thought of John Hausler, age 82, and I could always depend on John to be at the hall on Monday and Friday mornings. John always works on our dance floor and, now for eight years, it still is one of the best-kept dancing floors you have ever seen. He could be seen on his hands and knees cleaning some dirt or gum off the floor before mopping or buffing it; just last week, he scrubbed our kitchen floor clean.

By the way, the dance floor is over 7,000 square feet.

Then we have Raymond Skrabanek, age 78, and you can depend on Raymond to be at the lodge on Friday morning cutting our "lower 40 acres."

Raymond is a former city councilman and mail carrier of Jacinto City and does a good job keeping our lawn neat and trimmed.

Next is Willie Walla, age 76, who is our "Jack of all trades" member. Wil­ lie can repair any type of equipment and always volunteers to do the impos­ sible.

Then we have Tommy Wallace, age 73, a person who is "Tommy on the spot" and is available for anything all the time. He is one of the "three little old men" as the lady called us when we were moving some heavy furniture from the second floor to the first. But Tommy can pick up his weight and then some, which very few people can do at age 73.

Then we have this young man, Joe Krenek, age 67, who is our leader.

When it comes to doing something at our lodge, Joe will be the first to arrive and lead us; that is because he is our chairman of the trustees and the "1990 Fratemalist of the Year" for Lodge No. 172.

The first Monday of the month is our "work party day" and, on that day, we take care of repairs and improvements to the hall. Besides those listed above, . we have the following: Alvin Sefcik -- 69 G. Mayes -- 64 Louis Hrabina -- 74 Irving Theiss -- 79 Clarence Fee -- 69 There is one more faithful worker, Elmont Vyvial, but I don't want to mention him at age 57.

District V Director Louis Hanus named this group the "Faithful Few," but I will have to change this to: "The Faithful Amazing Few." This group has saved our lodge, "a bundle of money" in maintenance and repair and we are grateful and proud of them.

Most of them are old "cotton-pickin' Czechs" and have never known any­ thing but work all of their lives. They could all sit back in their rocking chairs and take it easy but, as John Hausler, says it: "If I stop moving they might start throwing dirt over me."

After thinking about all my fraternal brothers, I felt very good to be in their company and went back to sleep.

Lodge Rozkvět No. 172, Pasadena Dear Brothers and Sisters: On September 23, we had our social, dinner and dance with a good turnout; plenty of good food and good enter­ tainment. We had a group of 24 youth from Pasadena and close by area. They are the "Performing Young Stars" and all have lots of good talent and they put on a good program. Everybody en­ joyed them and gave them a standing ovation. Thanks to their director and also thanks to Sister Helen Wallace and Bobbye Johnson for getting this group of youngsters.

Thanks to everyone for their covered dish and pastry and also to Brother Krenek and his helpers for cooking the meat and sausage and all of you who helped.

Then on September 26, we had our regular meeting which was called to order in Czech and English by Presi­ dent Brother Jerry Dressler.

Sister Bobbye Johnson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silent prayer for our deceased brothers and sisters.

Minutes of the August meeting were read and approved, also communica­ tions were read.

Treasurer gave her report, and rest of the committees gave their reports which was good to hear and lots of work was done for the lodge and build­ ing.

Then Brother Dressler called on our guest, Sister Evelyn Mikeska, District V president. She reported on our up­ coming fun day picnic at Danbury, Texas on Saturday, October 13, and she asked for everyone to come.

Thanks, Sister Evelyn and come, again.

There was some discussion on the upcoming Czech Festival on Novem­ ber 3rd and 4th. Brother Dressler asked to get their arts and crafts and also all kinds of pastry for the country store for the Czech Festival; be sure to come. More information will be later.

Before we adjourned, we sang "Happy Birthday" to Brother Jerry Dressler and wished him many more.

We drew for the door prize and Brother Louis Hrabina won it.

The next meeting will be October 24; be sure and come. Our meeting ad­ journed and we went to the kitchen for pastry and coffee.

Since the meeting, Sister Margie Hrabina got sick and is in a Baytown hospital. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Our next work party will be October 15 at 8:30 a.m. coffee call. Be sure and come because we have plenty to do to get ready for the Czech Festival.

Czech Heritage Society of Texas To Hold Fall Meeting The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its 1990 fall meeting on Saturday, November 10 at the San An­ tonio Marriott Riverwalk Hotel, 711 East Riverwalk, San Antonio, Texas.

Members and guests will be free to visit the Czech exhibit at the Museum of Texas Culture, which is across the street from the hotel.

The business portion of the meeting will start promptly at 12:30 p.m. The program for the afternoon will start at 1:30 p.m., featuring talks by Lawrence Laznovsky of Ennis on the Sokol movement in Texas and its reorganiza­ tion in Czechoslovakia in January of this year, and Richard Pavlasek of Austin on the political and social trends in today's democratic Czechos­ lovakia. Mr. Laznovsky and Mr. Pav­ lasek have both taken part in functions of the Czechoslovak government this year. Mr. Laznovsky participated in the reorganizational activities of the Sokols in Prague in January. Mr. Pav­ lasek attended Czech President Vaclav Havel's reception in Washington in February and studied at Masaryk University in Brno in the Moravian part of Czechoslovakia in July.

The afternoon will conclude with a workshop on writing family histories, starting at 3 :00 p.m. and ending ap­ proximately at 4:00 p.m.

The workshop will be conducted by Robert Janak of Beaumont and will feature a slide presentation showing various sources available to the family history researcher.

Everyone who is interested in Czech history, culture, tradition or genealogy is cordially invited.

Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m.

A $3.00 donation will be requested at the door. Proceeds from the donation will go to the Albert J. Blaha Memorial Research Fund.

We are two students: Lenka Kralova (born in 1967) - student of Prague Charles University - General Medicine and Lenka Halasova (born in 1969) - student of faculty for photog­ raphers and with an invitation of our friend from New York. We would like

to go in autumn (end of October) this year to the USA (probably for 3 to 5 months.

This time we're not successful get­ ting a scholarship of study English lan­ guage in the USA and we think we'll not be successful because of great in­ terest of students from Czechos­ lovakia. So we'd like to ask you for help.

We are interested in life of American people, English language and we'd like to practice it in America.We don't want to make business, we only want to help you to understand our "velvet revolution" and with materials about it and about life now after revolution.

We'd like to try not to be financially dependent on our friend and want to ensure only our living (existence) in the USA. We established an exhibition of photos (about November revolution in Czechoslovakia in Prague). With pleasure, we found it very interesting for foreigners from Westem Europe and especially from the USA. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I Honors Volunteers The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor held their annual volunteer party in September.

Mrs. Frances Schwenker welcomed all the volunteers and introduced Rev. Felix Sager, who gave a short devotion on "What is a Volunteer?"

Mrs. Louise Sager read a poem en­ titled "Little Things."

Mrs. Schwenker called each volunteer's name and Mrs. Pauline Kovar gave out the certificates to the ones who devoted their time to the rest home. Both of us wish to thank all the volunteers for their untiring efforts.

Lodge No. 29 Youth Honors S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Residents On Grandparent's Day The SPJST youth club members did a skit by spelling out "Grandparents" in large letters and their meaning.

The childen also did a skit entitled "Let's Go Out To The Ball Game."

Then the children brought cards and flowers to their adopted grandparents.

The children will also spend special time on holidays with their adopted grandparents.

Lodge No. 29 youth club members are under the direction of Mrs. Donna Vanecek, Patti Rieger and Elaine Machu.

Every Tuesday morning, Eula Ganske from New Gulf come to have Bible Study. In the afternoon, Lorene Novosad, Ida Gasch, Lydia Hortman, Donna Rice, Annie Stavinoha and Vlasta Nowotny come to play social games with the residents. The KCs donated gifts.

The Damon ladies, Immanual ladies, Presbyterian ladies, and the Sunshine ladies come on Thursday afternoons to have crafts.

Every Friday afternoon, Melva Hast­ ings, Freda Klawitter and Lydia Hortman come to roll hair.

Every Sunday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have Rosary. The KCs come to give Communion.

Monday, September 10, the Hope Lutheran Church and Rev. Jensen from Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and had a social after­ wards.

Thursday morning, September 13, Paul Legendre talked to the residents.

Monday afternoon, September 17, Ed Pisklak provided accordian music and, afterwards, the residents enjoyed a popsicle party. .

Tuesday evening, September 18, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing. The families· and friends are invited.

Wednesday afternoon, September 19, Louis Smith, Hilda Clark and Martha Marx attended and enjoyed the senior citizen social held at the Presbyterian Church.

Thursday morning, September 20, residents Gladys Hix, Louis Smith, James Little, Hilda Clark, Lydia Dock­ al, Edmund Brandl, Vlasta Leus, Mar­ tha Marx, Aurora Longoria and Paul Legendre went to the Brazos Bend State Park and had a wiener roast.

These residents enjoyed wiener roast, especially seeing all the deer and watching the squirrels. In the after­ noon, Garland Hurtye and Mary Gof­ finet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy.

Tuesday afternoon, September 25, Elton Tielke provided accordian music and sang old-time songs with our resi­ dents.

Thursday morning, September 27, Patty and Peggy came to sing.

Happy birthdays for the month of September were for residents Mary Sims, Odell Michalec, Nora Pries­ meyer and William Pendleton; also staff Laura Myers, Aurora Longoria and Victoria Galvan.

The birthday party was held Friday, September 28, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres. Florine Sims of Danciger brought a cake and Evelyn Oberhoff brought a cake. Jack Sims donated money for a birthday cake. Volunteer Lydia Hortman helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and cof­ fee to all.

The residents enjoyed all the ac­ tivities during the month of Septem­ ber.

Thanks to all denominations of chur­ ches and to the volunteers who do ser­ vices in the home for our residents.

Czech Heritage Society News The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting on Saturday,

November 3, 1990 at SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, 3609 Preston Avenue, Pasadena, Texas in conjunc­ tion with the Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival. A fellowship hour will start at 3:00 p.m. The busi­ ness portion of the meeting will start promptly at 4:00 p.m.

A special program, following the business portion of the meeting, will be presented by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Janak of Hallettsville. The theme of their presentation will be the tradition­ al Czech wedding, including a demonstration of the impressive "Un­ veiling of the Bride."

Everyone who has an interest in Czech history, customs, tradition or Czech family genealogy is cordially invited. Members and guests are en­ couraged to bring and display their family histories and other items which they feel will be of interest. These items may be kept on display in the Czech Heritage Society' s display room throughout the entire festival. There will be no charge to the meeting or to the exhibits in the display room.

The festival activities will start at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night with a battle dance to the music of Harry Czamek and the Texas Dutchmen, and James Stryk and the Moonriders. Admitting donation $6.00 per person. Sunday's activities will include a Polka Mass at 10:00 a.m., a Czech-style country stew dinner at 11 :30 a.m., plus entertain­ ment all afternoon featuring the Choral Group of SPJST Lodge No. 88, the Czech Concert Orchestra of SPJST Lodge No. 88, the Galveston County Czech Heritage Band, Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County, a Parade of Costumes and the music of Leroy Matocha and his Orchestra from Fayet­ teville. The admitting donation to Sunday's activities will be $6.00 per person. The cost of the Sunday noon meal will be $5.00 per plate.

The festival is being co-sponsored by the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, the San Jacinto College Czech Club, the Texas Chapter of the Polka Lovers Klub of America, and SPJST Lodge No. 172 of Pasadena.

Reunions Michulka Reunion The eleventh Michulka reunion of the descendents of Josef Michulka will be held Saturday, October 20, 1990 at American Legion Hall, East Bernard.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish (enough for your family) for a buffet style lunch. Paper plates, forks, nap­ kins, bread, tea, coffee, punch, and keg beer will be furnished. A short busi­ ness meeting to be held after lunch.

Golden Anniversary Celebrants Professor J. J. and Mrs. Grace A. Skrivanek of Caldwell recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniver­ sary.

The couple was married in Rosen­ berg, Texas on September 14, 1940.

Their children are Joseph J. Skrivanek III and his wife, Susan, of Caldwell and Thomas A. and Shelome Skrivanek of Cooks Point.

The honorees also have two grandchildren.

Professor Skrivanek is a retired high school principal, retired professor at Texas A&M University and high school band director.

Presently, he is serving as president

of the million-dollar Czech Education­ al Foundation of Texas (CEFT) which his twin brother, Dr. John M. Skrivanek helped found in the 1950s and which recently established -The Chair of Czech Studies in Texas at the University of Texas in Austin.

After his brother John's death, Professor Skrivanek was custodian of the original donations to CEFT until it was reactivated in recent years.

Mrs. Grace Skrivanek is a retired teacher.

East Bernard Czech Singers Dedicate Their New Release To Marie Hlavinka The East Bernard Czech Singers, Martha Viktorin, Birdie Hlavinka, Margie Vacek, Martha Janik, Georgie Losack, Marge Hlavinka and Yvonne Krenek, have released their fourth cas­ sette and have dedicated it to Mrs. Marie Hlavinka of East Bernard, Texas.

This newly-released 60-minute cas­ sette is entitled "Czech Christmas and Religious Favorites - Volume II" and contains such favorites as Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Come Lit­ tle Children, and the Czech version of On This Day O Beautiful Mother. Also included is a melody written by the late Marie Novak of East Bernard, Texas, mother of Mrs. Mary Slanina of Wallis entitled Pisen k srdci panny Marie. · This tape is a sequel to their very first cassette released in 1986 Volume I of Czech Christmas and Religious Favorites. In keeping with their quest to preserve Czech heritage and traditions and while sufficient ef­ forts are being made to preserve the polka and waltz type music, the singers felt it appropriate to, once again, conserve those beautiful Czech "koledy" (carols) and hymns which are fast becoming forgotten.

The singers "dedicatedthis release to Mrs. Hlavinka in appreciation for her kindness and assistance with the trans­ lation of song titles and also for her help with the Czech lyrics of On This Day O Beautiful Mother.

The singers have also released other tapes of the polka and waltz type, again featuring original Czechos­ lovakian songs. They include such favorites as Annie Cutting Grass Polka about a girl named Annie and her boyfriend who wants a kiss; Black Gypsy Waltz, a tragic love story of a Czech girl and her gypsy lover; Water Sprite Waltz about the dreaded water troll (the Czechoslovakian version of the American "boogey man") and Waiting in the Woods Waltz, a love tragedy about a hunter who accidental­ ly fatally shoots his sweetheart in the woods. , These polkas and waltzes are all typical variations of Czech folk music which originated in rural areas of Czechoslovakia and much of it men­ tions something about daily life such as planting or harvesting crops, farm animals, love, courtship or marriage.

The polka has sometimes thought to have come from the Czech word for "Polish girl" or from the Czech word "pole" meaning field. The polka was · supposedly first seen danced by a young girl al Elbeteinitz in Bohemia in 1830 and the dance was first intro­ duced in Prague in 1837 and, in later years, in Vienna and London.

Czechoslovakian music, whether it be of a religious nature, a lovely Christmas carol, or a lively polka or waltz is beautiful in its harmonious composition and once heard touches and stirs the hearts of its listeners.

The East Bernard Czech Singers are proud Czech Texans who take pride in being part of this beautiful and color­ ful ancestry and feel that they have contributed toward the preservation of their Czech heritage through these beautiful musical cassettes. They urge everyone who is of Czech ancestry to be proud of their heritage and en­ courage them to learn and enjoy the __detl!ilsof Czech heritage and history.

The singers began their group in 1986 although they have been singing together for 30 years at weddings, funerals and Sunday Masses. They have performed at functions and fes­ tivals in surrounding areas as well as out-of-state. They were featured in 1988 in the May issue of "Czechos­ lovensky Svet," Czechoslovakia's counterpart to "Life" Magazine.

Musicians featured on these cassettes are Georgie Losack, featured on syn­ thesizer; John Dujka, accordian, per­ cussion, piano, synthesizers and trombone; Mark Dujka, button accor­ dian, guitar and saxophone;Rod Math­ ews on tuba; Willie Strieder on trumpet and Scott Walzel on clarinet and saxophone. The music is beautiful­ ly arranged by John Dujka whose uni­ que and creative style together with the lovely voices of the singers com­ pletes an outstanding sound that is pleasing to everyone no matter what your ethnic background.

The singers' next performance will be at Yukon, Oklahoma on October 6 and 7, 1990 at the annual Czech Fes­ tival.

Nationality Conflicts In The Czechoslovak Federated Republic

By Kevin Hannan It was Leonid Brezhnev who declared prematurely that all nationality conflicts had been resolved within the Soviet bloc. Since the time of Lenin, communists understood that the stability of their empire was threatened by the centuries-old ten­ sions that existed between the various Eastern European and Soviet nationalities. Stalin, a Georgian and non-Slav, formulated a nationalities policy that came to be adopted throughout the Soviet bloc. Any dis­ cussion of nationality questions which deviated from the official communist policy was rigidly surpressed. Thus Brezhnev's pronouncement only reflected the surface situation. Beneath the surface, Eastern European and Soviet nationality conflicts came to a slow boil, as has become evident in recent months.

Czechoslovakia was one of several new nations created out of the Austro­ Hugarian Empire of 1918. It had been nationality conflicts and Austria­ Hungary's inability to deal with these that brought on the breakup of that em­ pire after the First World War. Czechoslovakia was, from its concep­ tion, a multi-ethnic state formed from several different regions: Bohemia, Moravia, part of Silesia, Slovakia and Subcarpathian Ruthenia. These lands also contained German, Hungarian, Polish and Jewish minorities. Twenty years of democratic government was not enough to weld the different na­ tional groups into a single nation. The Czechoslovak Republic was unable to solve its nationality conflicts. These problems culminated in Hitler's ab­ sorption of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and the establishment of a separate Slovak puppet state.

One of the main attractions of com­ munism for many Europeans after the Second World War was the dream of a new order in which nationality con­ flicts would have no place. It was too obvious that the Nazis, Hitler and the war had all been born from nationalism. The communist promise that all forms of nationalism. would

wither away into a new "inter­ nationalism" appealed to many in postwar Europe. Throughout Eastern Europe Stalin put into place a central­ ized nationalities' policy. Supposedly based upon "scientific" rules of Mar­ xist philosophy, Stalin' s policy was accepted as an equitable solution to all of Eastern Europe's ancient nationality conflicts by many who wished to simp­ ly forget about these.

In Czechoslovakia and Poland, much of the German population was deported westward. Stalin thought of seizing Slovakia and making it a Soviet republic, but in the end he was content merely to detach Subcar­ pathian Ruthenia from Czechoslovakia and make it part of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. Perhaps this was just as well. The Czechs had never been able to decide what to do with the Ruthenians and could not even decide what their administrative language should be: local Ruthenian dialects, Russian or Ukrainian. According to Soviet policy, all Ruthenians were declared henceforth to be Ukrainians, including those still living in eastern Slovakia. To pacify Czechoslovakia's Hungarian, Polish and the newly­ designated "Ukrainian" minorities, these groups were given a token num­ ber of schools and cultural organiza­ tions. Many of Czechoslovakia's Jews had perished in the extermination camps; others fled after the war. Thus postwar Czechoslovakia was no longer the same multi-ethnic state as before the war. Communist Czechoslovakia had become a nation of Czechs and Slovaks with insignificant numbers of national minorities.

Forty years of fraternal co-existence should have been enough to forge a shared concept of Czechoslovak iden­ tity. Marxist philosophy stated that all causes of nationality conflicts had been eliminated in Czechoslovakia and other socialist states. In reality, how­ ever, there was little discussion about such problems under communist rule.

Czechoslovakia is today no more a na­ tion of Czechoslovaks than it was in 1918. Tensions exist today between Czechs, Slovaks and other nationalities because the communists allowed no dialogue between nationalities. Groups silently nursed their grievances as government policy was dictated by Moscow and filtered through Prague.

Today there are few Slovaks who call themselves Czechoslovaks. The official government policy today stated that Czechs and Slovaks are two different nations. Slovaks now write the name of their state with a hyphen: Czecho-Slovakia. The conflicts seem unbearably petty. Yet such tensions are the natural result of the centralized communist policy which allowed no discussion of nationality issues. Under the new atmosphere of freedom of ex­ pression in Czechoslovakia, it will take more than a little time for this dis­ cussion to pass.

The roots of the conflict between Czech and Slovak are deep and tangled. Although Slovaks, like Moravians and Czechs, were part of the Great Moravian Empire until the early 10th century, they fell under Hungarian rule for a thousand years.

The Slovaks often criticized the Czechs as being too German in men­ tality. The Czechs lived in closed con­ tact with Germans and until 1918 were isolated in great part from Slovaks under Hungarian rule. A millenium of political and cultural estrangement al­ lowed the development of distinct dif­ ferences in culture and national character which still separate Czechs and Slovaks today. As is too often the

case in Eastern Europe, a nation rarely holds a flattering stereotype of its neighbor. If a Slovak dislikes the Czech, it is because he finds him proud and false. Slovakia historically has been a poor land where the Slovak had to struggle to survive. The Slovak often resented the Czech's wealth and easy-going attitude towards life. The Czech, on the other hand, is likely to stereotype the Slovak as crude and un­ cultured. The Czech sees the Slovak temperment too fiery and untamed and lie resents that the Slovak is not grate­ ful for Czech help and advice.

It is sad that many Czechs and Slovaks today seem to accept their mistrust of one another as inevitable.

Some Czechs and Slovaks declare that they can live quite well without the other and that each nation should go its own way. This happens to be the program of the Slovak National Party.

There is a great deal of talk in Slovakia about independence. Some of the Slovak nationalists are quite vocal and chauvinistic. Yet it should be pointed out also that there are chauvinists among the Czechs. Many Czechs have traditionally looked at Slovaks as their poor relations. Czechs refuse to consider that they themselves might have created Slovak chauvinism.

Many of the conflicts which have surfaced recently among Czechs, Moravians and Slovaks are based in great part on economics. Each nation now claims that it is being plundered by the others. Yet despite the figures which each side offers as proof of this, the Czechoslovak economy is in such a shambles that any present system of accounting is very questionable.

During the rule of Gustav Husak, a Slovak, vast new industrial develop­ ments appeared throughout Slovakia.

Many of these factories produced military goods, however, and it is not known what will be required to con­ vert them practically to other uses.

There is great resentment at the vast destruction of the environment which has taken place in recent decades. Cer­ tain regions have suffered much more than others.

It was economics which broke the back of communism and it will be economic factors which largely decide the future course of Czechoslovakia.

Economic considerations will even­ tually take precedence over nationality conflicts in Czechoslovakia. Most Slovaks I spoke with this summer believe that Slovakia cannot survive alone without Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Most Slovaks believe that cool heads will prevail and that it is only necessary to allow people to let off steam at the "Prague centralism" which is seen as the root of all evil in Slovakia. The Slovaks I spoke with believe that Czechs, Moravians, Silesians and Slovaks will continue to live together within a single state.

Much of the agitation for Slovak in­ dependence comes from eastern Slovakia, an area which differs quite markedly from western Slovakia. Such are the paradoxes of Czechoslovakia, a small land, but a land of great con­ trasts. In language and culture, eastern Slovakia seems to be something of a cross between Slovak and Ukrainian.

Just as Moravia often appears to be a blend of everything Czech and Slovak.

And then some Slovaks claim Moravia, is really Slovak but has been Czechisized over the centuries by Prague. The different regions of Czechoslovakia seem to flow imper­ ceptably into one another, like a spectrum of color. And then, though all regions may be interlinked to one

Svatopluk, uplatňujíc svou zeměpisnou znalost rodné země a válečnou strategii 'jejího obyvatelstva, přemluvil Karlomana, mladšího syna německého krále Ludvíka Němce, k svému ustanovení za vůdce německého vojska. Jakmile však toto vojsko přitáhlo k bojovým posicím Moravanů, Svatopluk přeběhl ke svým. kde převzal velení a úplně roz­ drtil německé vetřelce. Další boje, někdy Moravanům příznivé, jindy nepříznivé, pokračovaly s přestávkami až do roku 874, kdy byl sjednán mír v bavorském Forchheimu. Tímto mírem Svatopluk uznal částečnou závislost na Německé říši a povolil misie bavorských kněží na území Velkomoravské říše; Němci se tímto mírem zavázali nevměšovat se do vnitřních záležitostí Velké Moravy a ponechali volnou ruku Svatoplukovi k rozšíření území jeho říše na severu, východu a jihu. (Obyvatelstvo sousedící zmíněnými směry s Velkou Moravou bylo stejně slovanské, takže mazaní NěmcineučiniliSvatoplukovi v tomto bodu žádný ústupek.) Taková byla situace na Velké Moravě, když Metoděj po svém německém uvěznění se konečně tam vrátil ze své první cesty do Říma. (Jak již v tomto článku zmíněno, z německého vězení Metoděje vysvobodil papež Jan VIII, který hrozíc pěti německýmbiskupům exkomunikací, poslal do Bavorska pro Metoděje svého zvláštního legáta, jež pak v roce 873 vysvětil na Moravě Metoděje v roce 873 na moravského arcibiskupa a papežského legáta pro Velkomoravskouříši a též i celou Pannonii s dalšími slovanskýmizeměmi.)

Ačkoliv Svatopluk přijal Metoděje po jeho propuštění ze zajetí s úctou jež mu jako arcibiskupovi náležela, tak jejich vzájemný styk nebyl přátelský.

Svatopluk byl totiž jednak pod vlivem německých misionářů, kteří činili vše možné k strozkotání slovanskémisie, a jednak byl ovlivňován svou družinou, která mu pořád jen pochlebovala a přitom ho stále proti Metodějovi popouzela. (Metoděj totiž ve své funkci moravského arcibiskupa soukromě i veřejně protestoval proti nezřízenému životu u Svatoplukova panovnického dvora.)

K tomuto bodu sepsal vynikající české dějepisec Alois Jirásek legendu "O králi Svatoplukovi," kterou cituji doslova z Jiráskovy knihy zvané "Staré pověsti české.'' -- Lid v chrámě Velehradském po kázání dopěl; poslední zvuky pobožné písně vyzněly, zraky všech se obracely k oltáři Nastala chvíle sv. mše kterouž měl sioužiti sám arcibiskup Methoděj.

A slavně sloužiti; bylť veliký svátek, zasvěcenýden svatýchapoštolů Petra a Pavla. Již planuly svíce na oltáři, již chvíli hořely, ale Methoděj nešel. v kostele čekali a potichu se modlili.

Chvíle za chvílí ubíhala. Slunce již vysoko vystoupilo, již padly jeho paprsky do oken kopule, již zašlehly dolů zlatým proudem do lodi chrámové. Vše se rázem vyjasnilo, stěny, obrazy svatých na zlaté půdě, hlavy věřících, žen i zarostlých mužů i starců, i plavé prameny dívek a dětí.

V jasné té záplavě zemdlely zarudlé plameny svěc, které již hrubě ohořely.

Již šepot zavanul kostelem, tlumené '

hlasy, již se tam ohlíželi, hlavy sestrkovali, tiše mluvilia se ptali, co se děje, co se stalo. Tak šeptem se tázali, a šeptem spěla odpověď, po všech pro­ storách svatyně: že arcibiskup čeká na krále, že král mu vzkázal, aby hrubé mše bez něho nesloužil, aby na něho čekal, až přijde.

"Kde je? Kde je král?"

"Proč nejde?"

Ptali se všude a všude pak žasli a trnuli, když kdosi oznámil, že na hon, dnes ráno, před svítánímže si král vyjel na hon s četnou družinou a lájí. Na hlučný hon v takový posvátný den!

Pak rázem umlkli, když se pojednou objevil velebný Method. Nastávalť již polední čas, a svaté mše déle již odkládati nebylo možná. S ar­ cibiskupem vstoupili k oltáři kněží, diakoni, všichni v bohatých kostelních řízách. I začal arcibiskup bohoslužbu; diakoni a kněží přisluhovali, kadidlo zapálili, zpěvy zapěli a zpívali.

A lid klečei stoje, maje sepjaté ruce, hleděl na krásu oltáře v plné záři svěc, v nichž také se třpytila kněžská roucha, řezby i obrazy, naslouchalmodlitbám a kněžskému zpěvu, jak hlaholil pod klenbou sborem i různo. A všichni rozuměli čtení písma, · modlitbám, zpěvům, každému slovu, a jati vroucí, srdečnou vroucností, jako u vytržení povznesli mysli své k Bohu. Na krále zapoměli.

Vtom zalehl do chrámu ohlas pustého, temného ryku, zmatený halas, divá směs zvuků a hlasů, jež kvapem letem se blížila, rostla jako lomoz vichřice. Ryk a divoký křik, troubení rohů, štěkot psů a řehtání koní. Již před samým chrámem ta bouře zahučela, již na prahu, již pod klenbou hřmí, již hrnou se strůjci této bouře chrámovou lodí, přímo k oltáři.

V ruce, za ním lovecká družina se psy.

Umlkli kněží, lid ztrnulý ustupoval, choulil se, tlačil se ke zdem a sloupům.

Král však, nedbaje nikoho, mávaje nahým mečem, hnal se k oltáři a křičel divě na arcibiskupa, proč nečekal, proč • šel k oltáři, proč nečekal. Ale u stupňů oltáře zarazil prudký krok, a planoucím zrakem hleděl, když stanul tváří v tvář svatému muži.

Ten stoje proti němu, pravici vztáhl.

14/VĚSTNÍK.:_ 10. řijna 1990 Ale král zůstal tvrdý proti němu po Zasmušoval se v duchu, když slyšel, všechen čas a zapomně, lnevděčně, co že nepřátelských spoust přibývá, že svatý ten muž pro moravskou říši . země víc a více hyne, když nářek pod­ učinil, že jí přinesl světlo pravé víry, že daných zevšad se již rozléhal a svíral obětoval jeho lidu všechno své <lilo, srdce. Proto povolal lechy a přední všechen svůj život. Ano ještě ho stíhal zemany, své rádce, a ptal se všech, co a rušil jeho řád slovanský na radu jeho má činiti. Než oni žádné rady proti napřátel z Němec. dopuštění Božímu mu dáti neuměli.

Svatopluk však bez trestu nezůstal; Tu, když ta rada, již svolal ve svém slova Methodějova se vyplnila. vojenském ležení, na večer skončena, Opustiloť štěstí mocného krále, jenž odebral se sám, zasmušilý a smuten do zůstal v zlořečení; z kolika stran vojen- svého stanu. A více ho pak dvořané a sky na něj táhli a na jeho lid: Uhři, nikdo již nespatřil. Okolo půlnoci vyšel Poláci, Němci a také Češi se bouřili a ze stanu, to stráž viděla, vsedl na koně nechtěli mu býti poddáni. Všichni jeho u stanu přivázaného a jel tiše spícím zemi moravskou hanebně drancovali a táborem. Nikdo si ho nevšiml, stráže hubili. pak, jež na kraji ležení stály, poznavše Král napínal všechny své sily, aby se ho, nevzkřikly na nej; uctivě ho pusti­ ubránil tolikerým nepřátelům, aby od- ly, ač jim bylo divno, nač tak poznní vrátil ty svízele od své říše. Než bouře dobu vyjíždí. za bouří šla, rána za ránou a zhouba Nikdo netušil, že již dlouho neměl ustavičná. klidu a spokojenost ve vší slávě a moci, I prohledl král a poznal, že již naň jak ho svědomí tížilo, že se tak obořil přišlo Boží dopuštění, a že všechno to na velebného dobrodince moravské neštěstí se děje zemi jeho jenom pro země, že rušil jeho řad a obřad. V něj, pro jeho pýchu a zpupnost. A tu bezesných nocích zkroušeně přemýtal často mu přicházel na mysl biskup na mysli, jak by se kál. A~ té chvíle se Methoděj, proti němuž se tak provinil. rozhodl, že se vzdá toho, co jej k té Vzpomínal na něj, a lítost ho pojímala. zpupnosti zavedlo, královské moci a

slávy, že nechá všeho, vojska, dvoru a sluhů, pokladů i krásné zbraně, vší moci, kterou hřešil, že opustí vše, aby zbavena byla moravská země neštěstí a trápení, jichž pro něj zakoušela.

I vyjel pryč z ležení a jel pustou nocí, až dojel na jedno místo na strání hory Záboru, kdež všude se černaly rozlehlé, neschůdné hvozdy, a kde před tím 3 poustevníci vystavěli s jeho podporou kostel.

V tom černém lese, na odlehlém místě mezi stromy a houštím, probodl mečem hruď svého koně, a pak zahrabal ten meč zardělý krví věrného zvířete. Bezbranný bral se pak dále tmavým hvozdem neúnavně, modle se,

až za ranního svítání přišel k těm poustevníkům.

Tentokrát nevěděli, kdo je, ani netušili, neboť ho nikdy před tím neviděli, a sám se jim poznati nedal.

Než že chtěl jako kajícník odevzdati se službě Boží, postům a pobožnosti, při­ jali ho mezi sebe, a Svatopluk, někdy· král moravské říše, byl pokorně poslušen prostých poustevníků.

V roubené chudé chýši, v drsném, řeholním rouše žil pán, jenž se kdysi odíval sobolinou a drahými sukny a bytoval v rozlehlých, nádherných síních královského Velehradu.

A major point of criticism heard throughout Czechoslovakia today is that directed against Prague centralism, a demon which is blamed for many of the country's woes. Some people believe that authority is too tightly centralized in Prague, and worse, that the Prague government tends to view the entire country as an extended model of the capital city.

Moravians are particularly vocal about this. While Slovaks enjoy a degree of­ self-government under the federative system, there no longer exists any Moravian-Silesian representative body. Since the end of the Second World War, Moravians have had no in­ dependent self-governing body.
