*** Your hardest job -- Here is a for­ mula whereby you can make your day, every day, just about twice as easy and profitable as well as productive of results to yourself, your business, and your family. It makes little difference whether you are· the boss, the buyer, the bundle boy, or the housewife.

The formula is that of a well-known executive who has won a reputation by accomplishing great things with ap­ parent ease. The rule is this: Every morning pick out the two hardest jobs facing you, and do these two jobs first. Those two jobs licked, the rest of your work will be easy.

In fact, even the hardest jobs, oftener than not, turn out to be easy themsel­ ves, once you have tackled them. It's putting them off that makes them look big and difficult. If you find it hard to get yourself started, think of the way a driving belt protests with screeches when the power is first switched on and it starts to turn a heavy machine.

But after it once takes hold and gets wanned up to its work, then how hap­ pily it hums! So it is with you.

Perhaps your mind or your muscles protest when you first tackle the job.

What of it? Just tum on a little more power, and soon you will find yourself humming like the driving belt and wondering what makes the job so easy!

*** The human mind. The most impor­ tant things happen in our minds, and the problem of life is to control the mind and its workings! If you run, trouble will follow, but defy trouble and trouble will run from you.

Cultivate your mind, develop initia­ tive, personality and experience. The power to do is within your mind. Make your contracts resulting in influence, take the "breaks" and remember the story of the successful businessman who when accused of being lucky, replied, "Yes, I am lucky and you know I've noticed that the harder I work, the luckier I seem to get."

The mind controls fear, anger, hate, sorrow, joy, happiness and failure or success. School yourself to meet fear by doing what you are afraid to do.

Discard anger, hate and failure from your makeup.

Meet the problems of life with a smile; work hard mentally and physi­ cally.

*** Isn't it true -- all males, no matter how big, make mistakes. However, history teaches us that big men refuse to falter because of mistakes. Henry Ford forgot to put a reverse gear in his first automobile. Edison once spent over two million dollars on an inven­ tion which proved of little value.

Usually, a man who makes no mis­ takes lacks boldness and the spirit of adventure. He is the one who never tries anything new; he .is the brake on the wheels of progress so to spes .

Therefore, don't spend your time regretting mistakes, but get up and hit the line twice as hard. Also, you will never succeed beyond the mistake to which you are willing to surrender.

Remember, a mistake becomes an error only when nothing is done to correct it.

*** Everyone's most precious asset. The hours of each day are life itself. Time is the most precious asset anyone has.

Think that over carefully. Is your life worth enough to you to make sound planning worthwhile? For any honest man, the answer is the question itself.

The darkest hour in a man's life is when he sits down to plan how to make a living without earning it. Is there a man living who can maintain honestly that he is entitled to success if he is unwilling to earn it? That answer, too, is in each man's own heart. If a man's object in life is to work just enough to get by, he will have to be satisfied with a half-load, wizened, disheartening existence, one that holds no future and bears the ear­ mark of despair.

Reservists called to the Persian Gulf could lose their life insurance. Sixteen out of 47 major employers surveyed by Hewitt Associates said they would drop company-paid coverage for reser­ vists on active duty there. The military offers an inexpensive alternative: $50,000 of term life insurance for $4 a month. Reservists who want additional private coverage will find that some companies are unwilling to issue them new policies. Mutual Benefit Life, for example, has for several years refused coverage to anyone planning to travel to the Middle East -- and that includes soldiers. Some insurers, like Pruden­ tial, will issue a policy but will add a war-exclusion clause barring benefits if death occurs in combat. However, many firms, including Metropolitan Life, with offices nationwide, place no such restrictions on new policies.

News brief Lillie Nezval, 81, of Bellaire, died Wednesday morning, September 26 in Bellaire Hospital. Graveside services under the auspices of SPJST were con­ ducted at 2 p.m. by Brother Rudy J. Sefcik, editor of SPJST Vestnik, Mon­ day, October 1 at the Czech National Cemetery near East Bernard. Sister Nezval was a dedicated and loyal member of Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28 East Bernard over 50 years; her son, Joe Nezval is president of Lodge No. 28 and a productive sales repre­ sentative.

SPJST Scholarship Guidelines General Scholarship Guidelines l. SPJST awards $25,000 in scholarships annually. Additional scholarship funds are provided by memorials and contributions to the scholarship fund. A minimum of 50 - $500.00 scholarships are given each year.

2. Scholarships are awarded for four (,4)-year colleges and Texas State Tech­ nical Institute <,TSTI) schools.

A light luncheon and fraternal hour is scheduled to begin after the business meeting adjourns.

The September monthly meeting on the 9th had several motions made and passed. All reports were accepted as given. Sister Craig, the new treasurer, took up her duties and should have all books updated by the next meeting.

News From Lodge No. 32, Victoria Lodge No. 32 met on September 12, 1990 with President Mike Ahlstrom calling the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence for our departed members followed.

Thanks to all of you who left a mes­ sage on my machine to furnish cakes for the Czech Heritage Society Czech Festival. We still need more cakes and the machine is ready to take your mes­ sage if I'm not at home. We hope to have several cakes and would like this cake walk to be the biggest ever and it will take the help of all Lodge No. 32 members for this to be a success. Hope to see you on October 21st at the Vic­ toria Community Center. The cake walk will be in the lobby as you walk in.

Remember, the fall social to be held on October 28 in Sweet Home. This willb e a fun day for all ages and I'm sure the food will be wonderful..

Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje Has Meeting And Social

Thank you notes were read from the youth club for the $100.00 donation and from the Human Services for the $200.00 donation. Samples of carpet and paint colors were presented to the members to choose.

Dolores Valigura introduced the guests from Louise High School who were sponsored by Lodge No. 40 to Girls State and Boys State. Tracy War­ zacka and James Barosh reported on what they had learned while attending the sessions at the State Government level. They thanked the members for supporting this project. George Leh­ nert, sponsor and head of the scholar­ ship program, thanked the SPJST for giving scholarships and also reported on the TIE-IN program at the Louise High School. Kim Kacal, Lodge No. 40 Youth Club president and District VI queen gave a report on State YAD. President Vanek reminded members of the upcoming events to be held at the lodge, Christmas Social, election of officers and the installation of of­ ficers to be held Sunday, December 9, 1990 at 3 p.m. Clean-up day al the hall was sel for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, September 25th and 26th.

A dinner of fried chicken, potato salad, corn, peaches, and cake was served to 23 members and guests at the Wednesday night dinner held at Lodge No. 40 SPJST, at 7 p.m.

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m, by President Rita Vanek.

The pledge to the flag was led by Youth Club President Kim Kacal. A moment of silent prayer was held for the deceased and sick members of the lodge. Get well wishes were sent to Ralph Macha.; husband of Leona Macha. .

All officers were present with the ex­ ception of Secretary Leona Macha and Assistant Youth Leader Donna Munoz.

The minutes of the August meeting were approved as printed in the Vestnik. The treasurer' s report was given by Treasurer Madeline Shimek, accepted as reported with copy of report on file. First Vice President Bennie Reck reported on the booking of our hall. FAC Dora Lee Kopecky reminded members of the District VI meeting to be held in Sweet Home, October 28th.

Lodge No. 66, Waco Meeting The meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 66 was called to order by President Mary Alice Langlotz at 2:30 p.m.

Flags were· presented by Jesika Tierce and Ashley Locke, Pledge of AJlegiance was led by Sandra Trickett and Lodge Motto was led by Alicia Neslony.

All officers were present, except Sister Darlene Engelke.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and were approved. She also read minutes of the board of trustees' meeting and they were approved.

She then read a correspondence from Brook Mays Music Company about collection of Czech folk songs; if in­ terested, this is the music book ad­ dress: Bod Bruie, Brook Mays Music; 1800-458-1162.

The Entertainment Committee report was given by Sister Sophie Leshikar

for October 21st meeting. Members are asked to bring casseroles, and the committee will provide desserts and coffee.

She also thanked all those who helped her with the spaghetti meal they served after the meeting; it was very delicious!

Brother Geo. Pauling gave the Fraternal Activities' report. There were 20 people present at our Septem­ ber social game night. We will be looking forward to our next social game night to be held October 8th at 7 p.m. We feel certain that our social will increase in attendance now that the summer is over.

He also stated that Lodge No. 66, Waco will host the District III meeting on October 28th.

There will be a voting for the Frater­ nalist of the Year at our October 21st meeting.

Sister Emma Ceska gave the sick list report. Get well cards were sent to Evelyn Seith, Leslie Dungan and Dar­ lene Engelke. Sympathy cards were sent to Johnny Gaidusek, Jewel War­ hol and the Emil Pustejovsky family.

She also read a thank you from Evelyn Seith.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported there were 16 members and 3 visitors at their meeting. They will be making Christmas ornaments for the District III meeting and, that day, they will be selling sandwiches, chips and drinks at the Volleyball Tournament.

They presented a check to Sister Evelyn Seith from the profil tbey made in the kitchen for the month of Sep­ tember.

Then there were awards given to the points' winners from the Libbie Trust Fund. May they rest in peace.

President Alice Langlotz presented a check to Sister Evelyn Seith for $900 from the benefit dance, also a $500 check from SPJST. It was nice to see her at the meeting.

The October 21st meeting will start at 2 p.m. so they can work on the up­ date of our Rules and Regulations, so, please mark your calendar of the time change.

In the trustees' report, Bill Hutka and Helen Bland were absent; trustees reported the men's rest room work is completed and Harvey La Flamme is to paint the rest rooms.

After a discussion, members decided to have a Halloween Party and open it to the public. Our lodge will furnish candy, cookies and drinks to party comers; prizes will be awarded to best costumes. Barbara Wright, Kathy Fritz, Eric Tomastik and Scott Gailey were appointed to this Game Commit­ tee; this party will be held October 31st starting at 7:30 p.m, Members also discussed having a fish fry at Glazener's Fish Farm in Oc­ tober. Saturday evening, September 15th, the Mynarcik Band played at our lodge for our second monthly dance. A small crowd attended but they did hear music provided by one of the better bands producing harmony on the SPJST dancing circuit. Those who were present thoroughly enjoyed them­ selves and danced until closing time.

I'm sure that we will have this fine band back at our lodge soon, and I feel that the larger the crowd, the better the band plays, etc. Keep an eye out for other dances and activities by reading these letters or consulting the calendar of events at the end of the publication.

By coincidence, my husband Robert and I both had birthdays in the middle of September. Mine was on the 14th of September and Robert's was on the 16th. We both took Friday the 14th off from work and flew up to visit with Robert's brother John, in Sharpsburg, Maryland, to celebrate our birthdays.

It just so happened that, in that area, the Federal Park Service was marking the anniversary of the Civil War Battle that took place at Sharpsburg (An­ tietam). On Friday afternoon, John Sill picked us up at the airport at Washington, DC, and drove us to his home in Sharpsburg. We unloaded our luggage and drove over to the sight of the battle. They had engaged a speaker, a professor from Texas Chris­ tian University to give a speech on the military strategies of Gen. Robert E. Lee. It proved to be a very enlighten­ ing and insightful narration. This was the first event in what turned out to be a very moving weekend. After the speech and a question and answer period, we returned to our host's home where we were treated to an excellent dinner and surprised with a homemade birthday cake. It was delicious! We visited a while, watched some late television and then retired for a busy next day. Saturday saw us arise early. enjoy a fantastic country breakfast and then set off to participate in some of the celebrations taking place in that part of the country. We traveled through this beautiful green and hilly countryside and John took us to the area where he is employed. He works as a plumbing supervisor at Fort Fredrick, MD. This is where research takes place under the auspices of the United States Federal Government. In the past, this is where research was · done on items to be used in our country's wars with other nations.

Now, this installation is used to help provide reseach into diseases such as cancer, viruses, etc. From there, we stopped at a small fruit processing out­ let that is reknowned for their jams, jellies and preserves. We purchased a case of various products and started looking forward to when we could lift the lid from several of them to taste the delicacies.

We had several options as to what to do next as there were many events taking place around this area during this period. We chose to go to Gettys­ burg, PA, and tour the sight of this famous Civil War Battlefield. We walked several blocks to the visitor's center and viewed many pictures on the wall of the skirmish that took place at Gettysburg. We went into a map room where they had an electronically lit map which showed the beginning positions and the progress of both ar-

Later, we hired a guide to take us over the area and point out the more strategic details of the struggle for Gettysburg. We spent more than two hours touring this most historical part of American History. After the tour was over, we were almost in awe of the magnitude of sacrifice made by both sides in quest of victory. You go away from this epoch of historical sig­ nificance with a prideful feeling to be an American, yet with a feeling of rei:norse that such a tragic event oc­ curred in the annals of our colorful past.

In walking through several cemeteries dedicated to the Northern Soldier and those of the Southern Sol­ dier, we have noted that many young Czechoslovakian boys participated in this conflict and paid the supreme price. We have seen a few headstones with names that appeared to be those of Czechoslovakian descent, especially where there were large numbers of companies of soldiers recruited from . the State of Texas. My God rest their Souls.

After leaving Gettsyburg, PA, we drove back into Maryland and again stopped in Fredrick, MD, to enjoy a birthday dinner.

Our host recom­ mended a place called Dutch's Daughter for an exclusive feast. It was very elegant and the meal and service turned out to be exceptional.

As the meal was spread before us, all we could think of was a prayer we often say at Thanksgiving: Bless, O Lord, These delectable vittles.

May they add to Thy Glory, And not to our middles.

We returned to the Sharpsburg Bat­ tlefield area where the anniversary reenactment was in progress.

Later that evening, they would have scenes enacted by torchlight, depicting events that occurred before, during and after the tremendous clash that took place at Sharpsburg/Antietam.

The first scene was that of a soldier saying goodbye to his family as he was being called to war and the effect that it had on his immediate family. From there, we progressed to other scenes outside under actual torchlight that showed men preparing themselves the night before the battle and writing letters to their loved ones. Other scenes showed officers discussing battle plans during the actual battles. The later scenes showed the aftermath, such as multi­ tudes of wounded and dying casualties of the hospitality. A church was used to operate on the wounded survivors and it portrayed the shortage of medi­ cal supplies in which to help the in­ jured.

The final scenes delt with citizens of the area who had crops and livestock confiscated and their futile efforts to receive compensation.

The final scene was heart-rendering as burial details were entombing the dead and families were searching the graves for a departed family member. A short speech was given in hopes that the fu­

ture would find our nation at peace for the duration.

We then returned to John's home and we had ice cream and cake to continue the celebration of our birthdays. Being very tired, we watched a football game on TV for a short while and retired for the night. Sunday morning, we had another outstanding country breakfast of bisquits, gravy, etc. After discuss­ ing future plans for Thanksgiving visits and a Las Vegas trip, we went and listened to a band that had official instruments of the Civil War period and they played marches that both ar­ mies marched to and ballads that sol­ diers sang to themselves as they

prepared for sleep or battle or their daily routines. We visited a museum near the battlefield and then headed for the airport. We enplaned and after a quite a long rain delay, we took off and headed back to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport and home. We had spent a very viable three days.

Buddy Hrabal and Memory Lane will be playing on Saturday evening, Oc­ tober 6th for your C&W dancing pleasure. Plan on coming by and join­ ing several of your lodge friends and neighbors for a night of dancing and mixing. Buddy's music is always en­ joyable.

Our President Inez Greenlees, my daughter Shelby and myself attended a portion of the Czech Fun Fest being held at the Czech Club on Military Parkway in Dallas. We went Saturday evening and attended the dance being held at that time. They had a capacity crowd and everyone was friendly and lively. We heard the Jodie Mikula Polka Band and then later, they were succeeded by the Vrazel Polka Band.

Both bands played excellent polkas and waltzes and the dance floor proved it by being filled to the max. They were selling Czechoslovakian food items such as klobase and sauerkraut, strudels, kolaches and other pastries.

Everything that we sampled was great.

We saw many of our old and dear friends at this gathering. We stayed late until the band played its last num­ ber and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Our lodge will have an unusual event on the evening of Saturday, November 17th. We will hold an old-time harvest dance with the hanging fruit, a sheriff and jail for those getting caught pilfer­ ing the goodies. We will have an ex­ cellent band playing for the dance on this exciting social happening. Be sure to contact the lodge or one of the lodge officers to make arrangements for this big event. Further details will be forthcoming in later letters and also in the back of the Vestnik.

At the end of my letters, I always enjoy employing a joke to liven up serious letters or tone down some that may be over exuberant. Almost all of my material comes from past Reader's Digest Magazines so as to use material that has been read by millions of people in this country and millions of foreign peoples. I had hoped to use material that · was neither misunderstood or offensive. Whenever I receive my copy of the Vestnik, I have noticed that several of these jokes have been altered and in the case of my last letter, completely eliminated. This is just to comment on the fact that those who proofread our letters are apparently doing their job. I will try to keep my witticism within the bounds of acceptability, but if you notice that my "tale" is sometimes missing, blame it on the ax and not on my forgetfulness.

All right, here we go again: Since her husband's job required him to rise extremely early, my friend Mary didn't feel it necessary to drag herself out of bed each morning, espe­ cially since she had three small children to care for all day. Quite often one or more of the little ones would crawl into bed with her, after her hus­ band left for work.

One morning, she awakened to the shrill ring of the phone. Half-asleep, she picked it up. "Hello," she muttered groggily.

"Has Ted left for work yet?" Her husband's boss asked.

"I'll check," she answered, still not awake. "Someone's in bed with me.

Let me see if it's him."

A seventy-year-old gentleman who had recently gotten married, went to visit with his doctor. He was explain­ ing to the doctor tliat he had just lately tied the knot with a beautiful 26-year­ old woman. But his predicament was he sighed, "I fall fast asleep every night as soon as I hit the bed."

The doctor wrote out a prescription and handed it to the septuagenarian.

The old man's face lit up and he began delightedly, "You mean I'll be--" The doctor reading histhoughts said, "No. I can't do anything about that.

But with this prescription, at least she 'li fall asleep, too."

Ladies Circle Of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth The Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth held their meeting on Sep­ tember 11, 1990. The meeting was called to order at l 0:30 a.m. by Presi­ dent Betty Billington.

We had one new member, Esther Herraro.

Get well cards were signed and sent to Pauline Marbitzer, who had surgery and Millie Wrubble had eye surgery.

Hope they are feeling much better.

Also get well wishes to all who are sick.

It was decided that we start a picture album. Marie Tesar will donate an album. If anyone with some interesting pictures concerning the circle would like to have them put in the album, may do.

I am as busy as a bee because I am packing to take a trip to Czechos­ lovakia. Then we will meet with some other folks and have 21 people traveling together. This should be a grand time for all.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women Our September meeting was called to order by our Vice President Adell Vlk. Adell welcomed 28 members and 10 men guests.

Adell led us to the pledge to the flag and had the members remain standing for a moment of silence in memory of Joe Vrna (brother-in-law of Stacy Athas), Jerry Urban (father of Dorothy Reznik and sister of Lillian Moran), and Velma Mikeska (sister of Lillian Graesar.

Our Sunshine Committee sent a sym­ pathy card to Dorothy Reznik and Lil­ lian Moran.

Thank you note from Dorothy Rez­ nik for donation to American-Czech Culture Society in memory of Jerry Urban was received.

News of members: Laurie Vlk, daughter of Adell Vlk, spent a month in Australia and New Zealand.

She saw kangaroos, wombats and koalas as she went through cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Alice Springs and Cairns. ln New Zealand, she en­ joyed learning about sheep and dairy farming so much, she even stayed on a farm and helped milk the cows.

She also made many new friends from all over the world.

We had lunch at Spaghetti Warehouse and then went to the Myerson Sym­ phony Hall. The group was really im­ pressed with our city and the Myerson Hall.

We took them to a big super market and malls. They could not believe the size and quanity of merchandise.

Friday night, the band performed at Sokol and everyone enjoyed it so much they would not go home. They played until 2 a.rn.

Their wishes were to go to Six Flags and we took them there Saturday. They really enjoyed the rides.

We all had an enjoyable time with the band and were sorry to see them leave=just like part of the family.

We want to say "Thank you" to everyone who had a part in making the band's stay a memorable stay in Dal­ las.

We are sorry to hear Rita Klimova, Ambassador from Czechoslovakia to United States, will not attend Czech Day at the State Fair due to illness.

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met Sep­ tember 13th. Twenty-two members and three visitors were present. Our visitors were Joe Vlk, Bob Zvolanek and Randy Trojacek.

President Sadie Kubin welcomed everyone. Sister Annie Vrana was wel­ comed back after a long absence.

The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated.

Secretary Georgia Tupy read the minutes. They were approved as read.

In the absence of Treasurer Mildred Trojacek, Sister Stacie Hejny gave the financial report. It was approved as read. Sunshine Stacie Hejny read the September birthdays and "Happy Birthday was sung. Birthday cards were given to sisters present.

Sister Julie Harris is still under the weather and Sister Annie Novak is doing much better. Sister Vickie Kohn's mother, Mrs. Mary Trojacek, fell and broke her wrist. A speedy recovery is wished to each one.

Thanks to Sister Sadie Kubin for sewing the blocks together for our quilt. We voted to have a covered dish luncheon for Christmas. Gifts will be exchanged. Bring a gift valued at no less than $3.00.

The Special Fund gift, a basket of useful household items, was furnished

by Sister Vickie Kohn. It was won by Sister Annie Vrana. Door prizes were brought by Sisters Mildred Trlica, Stacie Hejny and Emilie Harrison.

Laurie Vlk, daughter of Sister Adell and Joe Vlk, spent a month exploring the exotic aspects of New Zealand and Australia. She went camel-back riding in the desert outback, ate kangaroo, camel and buffalo meat and went in an underwater boat to see the coral in the Great Barrier Reef. She also saw many

Czech Day - - "SOth" Anniversary At State Fair Of Texas

The "50th" Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas will be celebrated on Sunday, October 7, 1990.

The day will begin with serving cof­ fee and kolaches at 8:30 a.m. in the special event's tent located next to the Museum of Natural History on the Fairgrounds.

At 9 a.rn., in the Hall of State Auditorium, there will be a Catholic Mass with hymns sung in Czech by all the people in attendance. This Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Charles V. Grahrnann, D.D., Bishop of Dallas.

At 11 a.m., the regular Czech Day program will begin in the special event' s tent, where there will be danc­ iq,g of the Czech national dance, the "Česka Beseda," children's programs, Czech souvenirs, Czech singing, ac­ cordian music, and lots of fellowship.

One of the attractions in the tent will be three (3) hours of polka and waltz dancing to the music provided compli­ ments of the MYNARČÍK POLKA BAND. The Sokols will perform at the Marine Corp Square from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

From The State Youth Director October Vestnik Project Czech Tales In Texas The Czechoslovakian fairy tales have not thrived very heartily, perhaps be­ cause they have played second fiddle to American fairy tales, Yet, they have taken a firm root in the hearts and minds of our forefathers and are still being colorfully told.

One story in particular that I would like to share with you is the story of Hloupy Honza (Stupid John).

Hloupy Honza is a very well-known comic character that is found in numerous Czech tales. Sometimes he is pictured as cleverer than people think him lo be. Very often he does what no one else can do. Through his goodness and honesty--or in other stories, through his stupidity--he res­ cues a princess or wins a reward.

HLOUPY HONZA AND THE ROBBERS Hloupy Honza and his father were preparing to go out in the woods sear­ ching for wood and wild berries. As they left the house Honza's father said, "Ber za tebl dveYe, Honzo" (which

means figuratively "Close the door be­ hind you" and literally "Take the door behind you").

Honza, of course, taking his father's words literally, took the door off its hinges and carried it with him.

On the way home that night with their berries and wood, they became lost. The father suggested that they climb a tree to look for a light. Honza complained about climbing the tree with the door which he was still carry­ ing, but his father, not having noticed the door, paid no attention to him.

After sighting a light, the father told Honza to climb down, but the boy told him that robbers were under the tree.

The father said that there were no rob­ bers and once more ordered him ·to climb down. Honza did not move and, when commanded, again, explained that he could not climb down because of the weight of the door. The father, finally understanding, told him to drop the door. Honza obeyed, and the fall­ ing door hit the robbers on their heads and stunned them. After taking the robbers to a police station, Hloupy Honza and his father received a large reward.

DANA COX is six years old and is the daughter of Billy and Denice Cox. Dana has two brothers, Cody and Casey and one sister, Elizabeth. Dana likes to ride her horse and attends the First Baptist Church School in Caldwell where she is in the first grade.

On August 19 State YAD was held at Mayhorn Convention Center. We had one teenager who received a $500 scholarship and he was Kevin Dobecka. We all are proud of him.

Don't forget the SPJST Christmas or­ nament contest for District III fall meeting. It will be held October 28, 1990 at Linden Hall in Elm Mott at Lodge No. 66, Waco.

We started on our Halloween and Christmas items for the rest home, mothers or parents and are working on our Christmas program.

We have cookbooks, Christmas cards, knives and other items for sale which will make nice Christmas gifts; call the youth members or youth leaders if you need any items.

Dear Members and Friends, The meeting was held September 9, 1990 and the youth had door prizes.

In August, we baked kolaches and strudels, helped the youth club on the float, which received third place in the Westfest parade.

Keith Hykel and I entered in the kolache contest. Keith won first place and yours truly received third place.

I want to thank all of you who helped with the kolache, strudels, who worked with the float, and those who worked in the Westfest booth. Thank you very much!

The Dime Box Youth Club held their monthly meeting on September 16 at 3 p.m. with 18 members present. Our President Susan Spacek called the meeting to order. Andy Rife led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag.

It was reported that we made $45.60 on our bake sale.

We will have the dunkin' booth at the Dime Box Homecoming on Oc­ tober 6th. Everyone signed up to work at the booth. October 19, we will have a sleep over at the hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. and our October monthly meeting will be held at this time.

We discussed sponsoring a dance to raise money for our youth club. Mrs. Ford will find out more about this.

Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Stacy Sapcek and Monica Spitzen­ berger who have birthdays in Septem­ ber.

Door prizes were won by Sue Ellen Flippin, Lamanda Kostelka and Nicholas' Rackel. The meeting was ad­ journed and everyone was treated to a soda water.

Lodge 88 Houston Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, President Lindsay Michalak called the September meeting of Lodge 88 to order at 7:40 p.m. on September 5, 1990.

There were 21 members, 6 adults and 3 guests present. The guests were Lara Hargrave, Leslie Hargrave and A. J. Frank.

Secretary Kristy Sokol read the minutes of our August meeting and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Jason Michalak gave his report -- in the month of August, our youth club raised $455, spent $217 and earned $238.

On Saturday, September 8, we went to the Imax Theater and saw the

We, the Resolution Committee, on behalf of Lodge No. 29, Taylor mem­ bership wish to express our sympathy to the beareaved family of our departed sister TONIE KONECNY, 83, of Taylor, who died Thursday, August 16, 1990 in Sweetbriar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Konecny was born in Czechos­ lovakia on October 14, 1906, the daughter of Ignac and Barbara (Svrcina) Chovanec. She had lived in Taylor for the past 75 years, where she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Anne's Altar Society and the SPJST Lodge.

Her husband, Joe Konecny, preceded her in death: also a brother, Rudolph Chovanec and her parents.

Rosary was recited Friday at 7 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 9 a.m, in St. Mary's Church with Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors inlcude four sisters, Millie Motloch of Taylor. Mary Russell of Huntsville, Albina Strmiska of Fresno, California, L. A. Urbanek of Buena Park, California: and a brother, Joe Chovanec of Volente.

Expression of Sympathy The membership of SPJST Lodge No. 117, Robstown expresses heartfelt sympathy to the family of brother TERRY LEE KALENDA, 33, of Corpus Christi, who died August 20, 1990 in a local hospital after a long illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi. He was president of the Coas­ tal Bend Children' s Heart Transplant Fund and had taken an active role in the Michael and Wally Buster, Jr. heart transplant fund-raisers.

Terry Kalenda received his heart transplant October 20, 1984 through the generosity of many heartfelt in­ dividuals, giving him the opportunity to serve others.

He is survived by his wife. Carol Kalenda; one daughter; Julie Nicole Kalenda: one son, Austin Glenn Kalen­ da; his parents, Johnny and Shirley Kalenda, all of Corpus Christi and numerous aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 22 at the Everhart Chapel. Interment followed at Robstown Memorial Park in Robstown, Texas with no funeral procession. Officiating was Rev. Billy Storm of Travis Baptist Church.

Brother Snapka was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was a mem­ ber of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, and the Fraternal Order of SPJST. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith, in 1986.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, David L. Snapka of Corpus Christi, Darryl and Gayle Snapka of New Caney and Donald and Sandra Snapka of Robstown; two daughters and sons-in-Iaw, Debbie and Garland Burney of George West, Dianne and Lawrence Neslony of Cor­ pus Christi; three brothers, Roman and Method Snapka, both of Corpus Chris­ ti and Rudy Snapka of Robstown; seven grandchildren.

Mr. Rieger was born February 25, 1929 in Taylor, the son of Leona (Witte) and Joseph Laurence Rieger, Jr. A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, he served with the lOlst Airborne Division and was among the first paratroopers to jump in Japan fol1owing the atomic bomb.

A lifelong resident of Taylor, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and had been self-employed as a carpenter for the past 35 years.

His father preceded him in death.

Rosary was recited Thursday at 6 p.m. at Condra Chapel.

Funeral services were held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating.

Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Alford, Richard Pyle, Johnny Marcon, Francis Fontenot, Joe Kropp and Mark Mar­ con.

Survivors include his wife, Vesta Rieger of Taylor; his mother, Leona Witte Rieger of Taylor; a daughter, Debbie Maddux of Taylor; a son, Bill Rieger of Taylor; a sister, Fayrene Gurley of Austin; a brother, Nelven Rieger of Taylor; and five grandchildren, Kristy, Darrell, Joshua Maddux, Steven and Brian Rieger.

Mr. Scharfe was born September 21, 1911 in Salem, the son of the late Frank and Martha Voss Scharfe. He at­ tended area schools near Sharp and pursued a lifelong interest in electrical

engineering. In 1974, he retired as a conductor with Southern Pacific Transportation Company, after 31 years.

He was a member of the United Trainmen's Union and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

His brother, Herman, preceded him in death.

Prayer services were held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Weed-Corley Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar, Austin.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Austin.

Graveside services were at 11 :30 a.m. Saturday St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery in Taylor.

Pallbearers were Telvy Robbins, Kenneth Mueller, Roy Kruemche, Frank Urbis, Lawrence Urbis and Mark Urbis.

Honorary pallbearers were Leonard Blaha, Woods Guinn, John Glass, Lloyd Fry, Lloyd Canterbury and Harry Saathoff.

Survivors include his wife Helen Urbis Scharfe of Austin; children, PrisciHa DuBois and husband Bob of Lockhart, Dennis Scharfe and wife Mildred of Austin, Ronald Scharfe and wife Alice, Yvonne Bailes and hus­ band Joseph of McAllen; a sister, Lil­ lie Mueller of Nordheim; 13 grandchildren and three great­ grandchildren.

SUSAN TYROCH

SPJST Member Is University Of Texas Twirler Susan Tyroch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Tyroch of Temple and Mr. and Mrs. James May of Belton, has been selected as the feature twirler for the University of Texas Longhorn Band in Austin.

Susan, a junior majoring in Psychol­ ogy, has been in twirling competitions since the age of 3.

She has been a feature twirler at the Belton Junior High School for two years and four years for the Belton High School and has been the World Solo Champion and Miss Majorette of America.

She is an instructor with the Talent Unlimited Studio in Temple.

Susan is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Tyrech of Seaton and Mrs. Haroldine Early of Troy; and is an SPJST member of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

Member Serving In Saudi Arabia ODESSA -- A 1980 graduate of Tatum High School, Matthew Kauf­ mann joined the Marines in 1987 at San Diego, California and graduated into the Marines as a PFC. Following a short leave, he reported to Camp Pendleton, California to train with the Assault Amphibious Vehicles.

Upon his returned from training in Japan, Korea, China and Thailand, he was on leave in Las Vegas, Nevada when he received a call for duty in Saudi Arabia.

Matthew is with "C" Company, 3rd Assault Amphibious Vehicles Bn. --1st Platoon in Saudi Arabia. ln 1989 Matthew was promoted to corporal.

Miss Victoria Pageant Contestant Heather Spears of Victoria, was selected fourth runner-up in Miss Vic­ toria Pageant on August 14, 1990 at Victoria College.

She is a sophomore at St. Joseph High School, is in National Honor Society and is active in several sports, such as volleyball, basketball, softball, and likes to dance.

Heather is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Spears and also has a brother named Aaron, who are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 32, Vic­ toria.

Pokračování z minulého Věstníku.

Dle různých pramenů Cyril a Metoděj vyrazili na cestu do Říma se svou družinou ke konci roku 866. Na této cestě se Soluňané zastavili na pár měsíců u jižní části velikého jezera Blatno (zvané nyní Balaton v dnešním Maďarsku) v sídle knížete Kocela, vládce Panonie.

Odtud pak doprovázení dalšími kandidatý na kněžství z Kocelova knížetství se moravští poutníci dostali do Benátek, odkud po několika měsících pak dorazili do Říma před vánoci roku 867.

Tu jim vyšel vstříc sám papež Hadrián II se všemi kardinály a kněžstvem -všichní s hořícími svícemi -- k uvítání a k slavnostnímu přinesení ostatků sv.

Klementa (třetího papeže) do velechrámu sv. Petra a pak po upravení patřičného náhrobku do basiliky sv. Klementa. Tato basilika, pravděpodobně založená v prvním století po Kristu, je jedna z nejstarších chrámů v Římě. Původně to byla jen privátní kaple poblíže paláce císaře Nerona, která byla ve čtvrtém století přestavěna ve velký kostel, který byl však těžce poškozen v jedenáctém století Normany, během jejich invase Věčného města. Na zbytku tohoto zničeného chrámu byla vybudována nynější basilika, která je tedy třetím kostelem postaveným na základech dřívějších chrámů. Jak časově vyplývá z mých hořejších několika vět, ostatky sv. Klementa se nachází v kapli druhého kostela, v tak zvané subterénní basilice, kde podlaha je níž než v třetím kostele. Ve vestibulu kaple tohoto kostela se nachází velmi zachovalá vzácná freska ze začátku 11. století znázorňující slavnostní přenesení ostatků sv. Klementa na márách nesených jáhny a za nimi pro­ cesí v čele s papežem a po jeho boku se světci Lyrilem a Metodějem. Tato krásná freska svědčí, že Cyril a Metoděj se těšili po přinesení ostatků třetího papeže Klementa do Říma velké úctě mnoha duchovenstva -- ného města. Tuto fresku a kapli, kde jsou ostatky třetího papeže uloženy, jsem si prohlédl během pouti do Říma (9. až 16. listopadu) k svatořečení Anežky České. Basilika sv. Klementa je přitom též spjata s naší historií, sem směřova­ ly, směřují a budou směřovat kroky poutníků ze staré vlasti a všech zemí, kde žijí lidé našeho původu, jelikož tu v tomto kostele je pochován svatý Cyril, jež před časně zemřel tu v Římě v řeckém klášteře u Lateránu. Tu u

3. řijna 1990 Cyrilova hrobu, na tomto posvátném místě, nám Anežčině poutníkům procítěně kázal při české mši v pozdní sobotní odpoledne, 11. listopadu 1989, tehdejší olomoucký biskup, nyní moravský arcibiskup, Frant. Vaňák o našich slovanských věrozvěstech, o dřívějších poutích do Říma k hrobu sv.

Cyrila a o Cyrilově nadšeném ctiteli slavném metropolitovi Moravy Antonínu Cyrilu Stojanovi, z Beňova u mého rodného Přerova, jež bude, doufejme, prohlášen v dohledné době blahoslaveným či svatým. (Viz celé citované kázání olomouckého ar­ cibiskupa Fr. Vaňáka v druhé části mého třídílného článku o české pouti do Říma k svatořečení Anežky Přemyslovny, vytištěné v SP JST Věstníku 28. března tohoto roku.)

Svatý Cyril se stal na vánoce 868 mnichem ve zmíněném již řeckém klášteře v Římě, kde zemřel 50 dní později v mladém věku pouhých 42 let 14. února 869. (Dle byzanského kalendáře bylo to v roce 6377 od stvoření světa.)

Po Cyrilově úmrtí papež Hadrián II obnovil syrminskéh arcibiskupství, které původně obsahovalo celou Pan­ no n ii, t.j, dnešní Maďarsko, severozápadní část Bulharska, kus západního Rumunska, část východního Rakouska a severní Jugoslávii, a vysvětil v létě roku 869 Metoděje jak arcibiskupem této oblasti tak papežským legátem Velkomoravské říše a všech dalších slovanských území. Tímto činem papež Hadrián II zastavil protesty německých biskupů proti slovanskému hlásání víry v tak zvaných misijních zemích, kde Němci si sami bezprávně přisvojili hlásání víry jen jejich způsobem.

Arcibiskup Metoděj vyrazil pak se svou družinou na Velkou Moravu. Na cestě se zdržel několik měsíců u knížete Kocela v jeho sídle Blatenském Kostele k vůli válce Velké Moravy s Němci.

Toto zdržení nebylo však nadarmo; Metoděj se v tu věnoval horlivě misijní práci, která velmi rozšířila v Pannonii křesťanství ve slovanském jazyce. Ar­ cibiskup a papežský legát Metoděj byl později zajat němci při návštěve saltzburgského arcibiskupa v roce 870.

Několik německých biskupů pak mezi sebou na podzim roku 870 rozhodlo Metoděje trvale uvěznit, coz pravděpodobně bylo schváleno německým vládcem Ludvíkem Němcem na císařském sněmu v Řezně (Regensburgu) v listopadu téhož roku.

Svatý Metoděj byl vězněn téměř tři roky v odlehlém klášteře u švábského Ellwangenu (západní Bavorsko), odkud ho vysvobodila psaní papeže Jana VIII (papež Hadrián II mezitím zemřel 14. prosince 872), doručená biskupem Pavlem z Ancony, který byl papežským legátem pro Bavorsko.

Tento legát doprovodil Metoděje na Velkou Moravu a osobně ho tam dosadil do arcibiskupského úřadu.

Při této příležitosti se zmíním o každoroční (letos již dvacáté) národní pouti ke sv. Metodějovi v Ellwangen, která se vždy koná začatkem července.

Tato každoroční pietní slavnost byla obzvláště významná v roce 1985, kdy jsme vzpomínali 1100 leté úmrtí svatého Metoděje, jež zemřel 6. dubna roku 885 a pravdě podobně je

pochován v okolí Uherského Hradiště.

(Hrob sv. Metoděje bohužel nebyl dosud nalezen.) · Jubilejní rok 1985 -- L 100 výročí úmrtí sv. Metoděje -- byl · zahájen papežem Janem Pavlem II již prvního ledna zmíněného roku v jeho kázání touto připomínkou: "Celá církev, zvláště církev v Evropě a zvláštním způsobem ještě církev těch zemí, které byly bezprostředně polem jejich evangelisační činnosti -- chce zařadit vzpomínku na oba dva svaté bratry do programu roku 1985. I Svatý Stolec se k tomu cítí zvláštním způsobem povolán." Cyrilometodějské oslavy v roce 1985 pak probíhaly takto: 14. února uvedeného roku slavil papež Jan Pavel II svátek soluňských bratří koncelebrovanými bohoslužbami v basilice sv. Klementa v Římě, kde je pochován sv. Cyril. Mezi četnými koncelebrujícími biskupy byl i biskup nás exulantů a zahraničních krajanů Jaroslav Škarvada. Při této mši první slovanský papež Jan Pavel II vyzvedl význam obou soluňských bratří jako "otců víry a kultury slovanských národů ve střední, ve východní a v jihovýchodní Evropě." Slavnou mší svatou byl zahájen rok svatého Metoděje též v Londýně v Anglii.

Bohoslužeb, ke kterým pozval westministersý kardinál Hume výz­ namné evropské duchovenstvo, se zůčastnili kardinálové Lustiger z Paříže, Konig z Vídně a Glen.p z Varšavy. Také kardinál Tomášek z prahy byl pozván ale tehdejší komunistický režim v Československu ho do Londýna nepustil. Jako zástupce národů jejichž představitelé se londýn­ ských slavných bohoslužeb zůčastnit nemohli, koncelebroval ukrajinský ex­ archa ve Velké Britannii, biskup Augustin Hornyak. Pietní oslavy 1100 výročí smrti sv. Metoděje v roce 1985 se konaly též v Německu v Mohuči nad Rýnem a ve Frankfurtu nad Mohanem, jichž se rovněž zúčastnil titulární biskup zaniklé diecése v historické Litomyšli, dr. Jar. Škarvada, pastýř našeho exilu i zahraničních krajanů po celém světě. Tento vlastenecký biskup koncelebroval slavnou mši ve frankfurtském dómu s biskupem Ukra­ jinců, žijících v NSR (Německá Spolková Republika) Dr. Platonem Kornyljakem a se světícím biskupem limburské diecése, Gerhardem Pieschlem, který pochází z Moravy. Na závěr účastníci slavnostních bohoslužeb byli přijati frankfurtským starostou Wallmannem. Naši němečtí krajané v bavorském Mnichově uspořádali 9. února studijní den, věnovaný Evropě. V jeho rámci přednášel Dr. Frank Machilek z Bamberku na téma: Velehrad und die Cyrill -- und Method -- Idec. Hlavním celebrantem a kazatelem závěrečných mešních obřadů k poctě patronů Evropy, světců Cyrila a Metoděje, byl lublaňský arcibiskup Dr. Alois Šuštar z Jugoslávie. Mezi koncelebranty byl i známý český monsignor Karel Fořt, působící v Mnichově. Večer byli pak přijati účastníci slavnosti na radnici členem městské rady Seppem Brun­ nerem, který zastupoval mnichovského starostu. Oslavy jubilejního roku -1100 výročí smrti sv. Metoděje -- v roce 1985 vyvrcholily XV národní poutí k

sv. Metodějovi v Ellwangenu, které se zůčastnily všechny složky našeho národa v zahraničí. Dva dny před poutí 6. června se v Ellwangenu konalo sym­ posium České křesťanské akademie s cyrilometodějskou tématikou a při poutních bohoslužbách byli vysvěceni biskupem Škarvadou dva alumni z české koleje Nepomucena v Římě na jáhny. Kazatelem na poutní mši byl rektor koleje Nepomucenum prelát Dr. Karel Vrána. Letos, jak již v tomto článku zmíněno, začátkem července byla to již XX pouť k sv. Metodějovi do Ellwangenu. Letoší pouti, první po návratu svobody ve stare vlasti, se zůčastnili i poutníci z Československa.

Chromý.

Po ulici šel chromý člověk. Opíral se o hůl a kulhal. Za ním pobíhalo několik dětí. Pokřikovaly za chromým a kulhaly po něm. Chromý nepromluvil ani slova. Bylo mu líto, že se mu děti posmívají.

Jeden stařeček zastavil se u dětí a pravil: "Poslyšte, co se stalo tomuto člověku. Znám ho dobře, je to můj soused. Býval krásným a veselým mužem.

Jednou hořelo v naší ulici. Oheň se šířil prudce a rychle. Lidé nestačili vynášeti nábytek. U Valentů zůstalo i malé děťátko. Matka na ulici plakala.

Spínala ruce a prosila, aby zachránili jejího synáčka. Chlapeček byl v hořejším patře a plameny šlehaly už kolem celého domu. Každý litoval dítěte, ale nikdo mu pomoci neuměl.

Tu přišel můj soused. Na. rameně nesl dlouhý žebřík a v ruce provaz. Žebřík postavil ke stavení a vystupoval k oknu. Za několik minut spustil po provaze koš i s košiláčkem. Potom sestupoval dolů. Sotva učinil několik kroků, ohořelý žebřík se zlámal. Sous­ ed spadl a zlomil si obě nohy. Od té doby je chromý."

Myš se schovala pod pytel.

Slepice se schovala do chaloupky.

Holub se schoval do holubníku.

Myslivec se schoval do lesa.

Zajíc se schoval také do lesa.

Liška se schovala pod stromeček.

Veverka se schovala na stromě.

Vlk se schoval za strom.

Kuře se schovalo pod slepici.

Toník se schoval pod čepici.

Beránek na cestách Byl jednou beránek a ten chtěl poz­ nati svět. Časně ráno, když ještě ostatní berani a ovce spali, protáhl se plotem a dal se do běhu.

"Podívám se, co je tam dole v údolí," pravil si.

Běžel do údolí, kudy tekl potůček.

Beránek chtěl zvěděti, kam potůček teče. I dal se do běhu podle něho.

Velice se mu to líbilo. Když měl chuť, zastavil se a pojedl trávy, která rostla na břehu potůčku. Když měl žízeň, napil se z potůčku čerstvé vody.

Tak běžel dlouho, až přišel na louku, kde stála pěkná chaloupka se zahrádkou.

Před chaloupkou pásla se černá koza.

"Dobrý den, kozičko," oslovil ji beránek.

"Dobrý den, beránku, kam pak jdeš?" ptala se koza.

"Jdu do světa."

"A tak sám? Kde pak jsi zanechal svého pastýře a s.ádo?"

"Utekl jsem," odpověděl beránek.

"Jsi ty hloupý," pravila moudře

koza. "Když půjdeš sám do světa, potkáš vlka, který tě sežere, anebo řezníka, který tě zabije. Vrať se domů!"

Beránek se velice ulekl. Ale vrátiti se nemohl; nevěděl, kudy má jíti zpátky.

"Nuže, zůstaň tedy u nás," radila mu koza. "Moje paní je hodná a její dceruška také. Popros jich, aby si tě tu nechaly."

Beránek uposlechl. Uviděl nedaleko holčičku, která si hrála u zahrádky.

Běžel k ní a lichotil se k ní.

Když holčička spatřila hezkého bílého beránka, měla radost a volala na maminku: "Maminko, maminko, pojď sem! Je tu beránek a chce zůstati u nás."

Maminka přišla, pohladila beránka a ptala se dcerušky: "Budeš beránka pásti?"

"Budu, budu," volalo děvčátko.

A tak nalezl si beránek nový domov.

Ve dne pásal se s černou kozou na louce před chaloupkou a hrál si s holčičkou.

V noci spal s kozou v jejím chlévě.

Když dorostl, dával své nové paní vlnu; a ona z ní pletla teplé punčochy pro sebe i pro dcerušku.

Announcing a new contest that will get everyone involved in preparing our great Society for its voyage into the '90s. The success of VISION '90 will depend on the effort put forth by our members to tell others about the SPJST. For example, did you ever want to invite your friend, neighbor, or co-worker to join S~JST but didn't know how to go about it? wén, now we're going to tell you how!!

WHO'S ELIGIBLE?? -All active SPJST members. Sales representatives and members of their immediate household along with Home Office personnel are not eligible.

HOW DO I ENTER?? -Send us the name(s) of people you would like to see join the SPJST by completing the coupon below and mailing it to our Insurance Department. If you would like to recommend several people, attach a separate sheet and mail to us. ONLY LIFE INSURANCE SALES ON NEW MEMBERS WILL COUNT FOR THIS CONTEST. After we receive your recommendation, we will register it and forward it to a sales representative for contact. All referrals must be registered through the Home Office to count towards the contest. If you would like to also recommend a sales representative to contact your person, indicate his name on the coupon below. If you do not list a sales representative, one will be assigned through our office.
