Roberts It is very important that members of each district attend their district meeting because we need more mem­ bers to get involved in SPJST-oriented activities which were planned for all ages. In this issue you will find the date of each district meeting in the Bulletin Board.

*** We also want to call your attention to the 50th anniversary of Czech Day held Sunday, October 7, 1990 at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas and you are encouraged to wear your Czech costume.

In this type of work a person does much thinking, reading and evaluating all walks of life; if not, then the value of words which individuals speak or write are of very little value and intel­ lect -- something your editor does not strive to achieve.

When we stop to realize that our SPJST Society has done rather well in our investments in the recent past, we have to admit that our national, state and other categories of government have done much worse.

True, some of our directors have made some loans that have turned out bad for our Society, however, com­ pared to the Savings and Loans scan­ dal which resulted when the former U.S. President Reagan signed the law deregulating the Savings and Loans and remarked: "We have hit the jack­ pot," we (the general membership) can thank Supreme Lodge Secretary­ Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and our Investment Department for prudent handling of our resources!

Now, it seems that even many of the banks are in poor management hands.

With our deficit, Savings and Loans mess, recession and lack of energy as well as education policies, it seems that Washington is fixing the fence after the herd of cattle has gone!"

The editor-in-chief of U.S. News and World Report writes: A Gennan or Japanese family can expect to double their living standard in a generation.

Americans will be lucky just to main· tain theirs."

He also writes: Will our politicians grow up? Failure to address the deficit symbolizes the most catastrophic. col­ lapse of leadership in the last 50 years.

How long could a family or business operate by continually going into debt? Very frankly, this writer is thankful his investments are in our SPJST SOCIETY!

Wouldn't it be nice if we could find other things as easy as we find fault?

Not long ago, a man took stock of him­ self. For years he had awakened in the morning feeling none too good. He was quite likely to be displeased that it was time to rise. He would frown be­ cause the children were noisy and full of life. He never had much to say to his wife until he had eaten his break­ fast in silence.

Then he began to notice that his days were colored by that first hour. If that was the case--the logical thing was to change the character of the first hour of the day. He thought he would try out that plan.

He made out a definite program.

When he first awakened, he would enumerate all the good things that had occurred the day before. Then he would think of the care of the -night, and the opportunities of the day which awaited him. He would think of him­ self as eager to do a good turn for someone. He would start right then to determine to be good-natured the first hour of the day. He would try to make it pleasant for someone. It might be to write a note, just a cheerful line or two, to some lonesome soul.

So, the morning of the first day of the new program he went downstairs and remarked cheerfully, "My, but that coffee smells good! There's all the dif­ ference in the world in coffee, and, Jane, you've certainly got the knack of making it."

To the man's surprise, the days be­ came more interesting, his associates became more considerate and friendly, and his business grew surprisingly, *** even in the face of difficulties. We will also be practicing volleyball.

He also encouraged everyone to read the Supreme Lodge minutes in the Vestnik a few weeks ago containing the "Missions · and Goals." report. It is a very important document and we will be hearing a lot more about it.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported there were 35 members, 4 visitors and 6 adults present. Con­ gratulations to Jason Reese for win­ ning the title of State King. All grandparents were honored with a cor­ sage in honor of Grandparent's Day. The youth club members played a short game with all the grandparents.

It's time to start thinking about nominating someone for the Brother and Sister Award of Lodge 47. There will be a box provided at all lodge meetings.

A quilting circle was organized to make a quilt for our lodge picnic. If anyone is interested in helping with this project, contact Gladys Marek or Adeline Kohutek for more ínforma­ tion. They will need your help.

Lodge No. 183, Arlington Dear Members and Friends: Labor Day has· come and gone, the kids are getting settled into the new school year and vacation time is just about done for this round. Football season is beginning to push baseball to the end of its season and, hopefully, the cooler temperatures will push our extended heat spell out of the picture.

Here's hoping that everyone had an enjoyable summer, took the trip that they have dreamed about and had a safe and pleasant Labor Day Holiday.

It is time to start buckling down and start taking care of the business at hand. The fall season is near and it brings about many activities to be planned. The fall district meetings are just around the corner including the Texas State Fair and Czech Day. Shortly after that appears Thanksgiv­ ing Day and then the month of Decem­ ber brings on a flurry of activities that will require careful attention. This is just a reminder to .all members of Lodge No. 183 to be sure to attend the monthly meetings of the lodge so that you will have a say when your favorite activities take place.

Teamwork is essential -- it allows you to blame someone else if some­ thing goes wrong.

I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to rush the year to its conclusion.

Believe me, the days and months and years are rolling by too fast at this point. I just want to emphasize the position that many of the activities are remanded to the end of the year and usually there are the activities that hold most happy memories for most families. We, at Lodge No. 183, feel that it is important that all members possible, attend the planning stages of these endeavors and then come and enjoy what you have contributed.

Inez Greenlees and myself enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of socializing, dancing, good food and drink at Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth on Sunday, August 26th. The Mynarcik Band played for everyone's entertainment and their music was excellent, as usual. Many of our friends from Lodge No. 92 were there to extend us a warm welcome as well as members from other lodges in the Metroplex area.

Old friendships were renewed, new friends were acquired and everyone had a terrific time. Many thanks to Mr. Carl Zich who was our Welcoming Committee and ambassador-at-large.

On the evening of Friday, August 31st, we held our Family Social Night.

We had a nice turnout despite it being the holiday weekend. The lodge sup­ plied a scrumptious honey-baked ham . and two indescribably delicious pies.

Other mouth-watering items were sup­ plied by the charming ladies of the lodge and we ate and thoroughly en­ joyed ourselves. We socialized, played several different games and all-in-all had a great time. We will be looking forward to our next Family Social Night to be held the last Friday night in September. We feel certain that our socials will increase in attendance now that the summer is over.

evening of Saturday, September 1st.

Again, this being the holiday weekend, attendance was moderate but a swell time was had by all who came to listen and to dance. The band did their usual fine performance and everyone stayed until the final notes were wrung from the instruments.

A violinist is always up to his chin in music.

Over the Labor Day Holiday, my parents, my husband, Shelby and I took a trip to Los Angeles to visit my Aunt Amelia. We arrived in Los An­ geles Saturday morning about 10:30 a.m. and drove to my aunt's house.

After a round of visiting and some delicious peach cobbler, we drove around Los Angeles to see some of the high-points. We visited Hollywood and saw the Walk-of-the-Stars along Sunset Blvd. and we visited the famous Chinese Restaurant that had the stars' hand prints and foot prints embedded in cement. We drove around a little more and stopped off at one of their nicer malls to do some window shopping. We had an enjoyable supper with my aunt and did some more reminiscing. We arose early Sunday morning and after breakfast, we started out along the coastal highway up to San Francisco. The drive along High­ way One is as spectacular an ex­ perience as you could ever hope for.

This is the scenery where the moun­ tains meet the ocean. The ride along Big Sur is just too beautiful to describe. Traffic along this highway was somewhat heavy since it was the Labor Day Weekend, but we took several pictures when we' were able.

We reached San Francisco later that evening and we drove to Fisherman's Wharf where we looked around and then had a great seafood dinner. From there, we returned the automobile and caught a shuttle to the airport. Our flight was the old "redeye," which left San Francisco International Airport at 12:25 a.m. (Pacific daylight time) and returned to Dallas/Fort Worth Airport at 5:30 a.m. CDST. That at least got us home for the holiday on Monday. We slept for a while and then we went and visited with Robert's parents to celebrate the holiday, go out to eat and then play some firece "42." We had a very busy but enjoyable three-day weekend.

We held our regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 183 on Sunday, Septem­ ber 9th at 5 p.m. Sixteen individuals attended the meeting and three of those were guests. My in-laws, Bill and Mary Sill, attended as well as my mother, Rose Breckenridge. The meet­ ing was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.. We held a moment of silence for the sick and departed. Roll call was held and com­ munications read. The officers gave their reports and three new members, Charles W. Troy, Beth Ann Troy and Timothy Gray, were accepted into the lodge. Old business was brought forth and the main item from this agenda was to reinstate the secondary Family Nights to be held on the second Friday night of every month. These are op­ tional and are usually lightly attended, but the lodge will be available for those wishing to getout of the house and meet with a few of your lodge buddies.

New business was brought up and a couple of committees were appointed for future requirements. These will be to recommend a member for "Frater­ nalist of the Year" and also to begin canvassing the membership for next year's officers. Czech Day - - "50th" Anniversary At State Fair Of Texas The "50th" Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas will be celebrated on Sunday, October 7, 1990.

The day will begin with serving cof­ fee and kolaches at 8:30 a.m. in the special event's tent located next to the Museum of Natural History on the Fairgrounds.

At 9 a.m., in the Hall of State Auditorium, there will be a Catholic Mass with hymns sung in Czech by all the people in attendance. This Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Charles V. Grahmann, D.D., Bishop of Dallas.

At 11 a.m., the regular Czech Day program will begin in the special event's tent, where there will be danc­ i~ of the Czech national dance, the "Ceska Beseda," children's programs, Czech souvenirs, Czech singing, ac­ cordian music, and lots of fellowship.

District I Youth Take Summer Trip Dear Readers, On Saturday, August l l, 1990 was a day of firsts for District I youth and their DYC. Two chartered buses filled with 89 youth club members and their parents headed out to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. Although a lot of the others had been there before, it was a first visit for me. We arrived at Schlit­ terbahn at 10:30· a.m, with our sack lunches and coolers full of cold drinks.

Before we could enter the park, a few pickles had to be unjarred and some drinks had to be transferred to other containers because no glass is allowed inside. We took a long hike and finally reached a "picnic" area and com­ menced to tear into our sack lunches.

After lunch, each went their separate way, riding inner tubes, body sliding or just relaxing by the pool. I think I did just about every activity, at least I felt like I had the next day.

At 6 p.m .• all were back at the picnic area for a short walk to our final des­ tination--The Bavarian Village Res­ taurant. Assistant DYC Randy Gaus led the way. It' s a wonder we ever made it! We were greeted at the res­ taurant by fellow SPJST members-vthe Haags. We all enjoyed a feast consist­ ing of 6-foot long sandwiches, chips, a· large drink and a brownie for dessert.

Everything was great. After visiting the gift shop and viewing the 13-inch egg, we were entertained by the Seven Dutchmen. I wonder if Holly Suehs ever found the chicken that laid the egg. Most of the group enjoyed danc­ ing the Chicken Dance led by April Haag and also doing the Bunny Hop. Dana Cox and Sue Ellen Flippin were a big hit when they danced with a local German man ·dressed in his Ger­ man costume. I enjoyed a nice waltz with Chris Haag. New member, Dana Cox celebrated her 6th birthday and was presented a slice of chocolate cake with a candle and took center stage as the band and the entire group sang "Happy Birthday." The group also

The youth members of District I, along with all the adults who attended, would like to say a big "THANK YOU" to the Bavarian Village and especially the entire Haag family for extending their hospitality and making us feel so at home. The meal was deli­ cious and the atmosphere was superb.

The buses were a lot quieter on the journey home while we arrived home as scheduled. I understand that the bus drivers were really traveling.

I would like to thank all the youth for participating in this activity and for being on their best behavior. It is a joy to work with you who are as good as all of you are. A big thank you to all the parents who went along to help su­ pervise. I know you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Hopefully, this sort of fun day can be a part of our regular summer activities in the future.

Dear Vestnik Readers, · The summer has once again slipped past us. Each year it seems to end so much sooner. I hope each of you had a great summer. Good luck to you in the new school year.

District II camp was once again filled with much fun and excitement. It · was great to see so many new faces; youth and chaperones. Hope all of you plus many more will be there again next year. I thank all of the youth who attended camp. You were all great campers. LITs, as usual, you were SUPER! Each one of you helped in so many ways and you were there when needed. There are many junior campers who look up to you as the "Big Guy." I enjoyed each of you, and I am just so glad we resolved the mystery of "Where's Fluffy?" Leaders and ' chaperones, thanks for your devoted time to our youth. I know each one of us made many new friends. We began our camping session with 83 junior campers, 15 LITs and 19 chaperones. We then continued on with 19 teen campers and 11 adults.

We all enjoyed this year's theme "Pioneer Days." Thank you, Claudette, for bringing and demonstrating the pioneer things. The biggest hit of all was our homemade ice cream. We had a great time rolling the ice cream (no, not rolling bread dough), but rolling ice cream. It · was fun and delicious.

Juniors enjoyed the outdoor penny car­ nival, which kept with the pioneer theme. The scavenger hunt for the teens kept them in suspense until they had a suspect, weapon, day time, place and motive. Who will the suspect be next year? The teens also enjoyed a

Don't cry! See, it's just me. night of dancing. Both camps, once again, looked forward to the swim­ ming, horseback riding, archery, canoeing, games, singing, dancing, hikes and basket-weaving. We were glad to have with us our helpful lifeguards Susan Spacek and Mike Whistel from District I. We thank you and look forward to next year. Once again, a big THANK YOU to all of you who had any part of District II camp.

We congratulate all of these winners and all participants. You are all win­ ners; you made it to state I Our District II fall trip was small in attendance, but big with sun, fun, thrills and screams. On August 25, one bus leaving from Temple, one bus from Elgin, and two carloads from Lovelady headed for Houston to Astroworld/Waterworld. We all had a great time. Thanks to all of you who attended. A special thanks to Youth Leader Donna Vanacek for organizing the bus details and Assistant DYC Sharon Holman for making sure everyone was there.

The fall meeting for District II will be held on Sunday, September 23 at Lodge No. 80, Holland. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. There will be only a short meeting prior to games and con­ tests. District Queen Melanie Zavodny and District/State King Jason Reese will deliver their winning speeches.

State's first place Junior Group Talent winners from Taylor will also perform.

Youth members, remember to bring your Christmas tree ornament for judg­ ing. I hope many of you will par­ ticipate. There will also be a horseshoe contest for the youth. We are adding a new contest this year-» Frisbee golf.

Many of us played this at teen camp this past year and enjoyed it so much, it was decided to be added to the fall carnival. Everyone can play. The course will be set up as a regular golf course; no golf clubs to make a hole in one, only frisbee. Sign up for it. You'll enjoy it!

There will be many games throughout the evening, fish pond, wheel of fortune, cake walk and many more. Twenty free tickets will be given to each person who registers.

There will also be a drawing and door prizes. Each member is asked to bring two pantry items, a salad and a cake for the cake walk. A free meal will be provided by the district. Make plans to attend for a family fun-filled evening.

Announcing New Youth Club Leader From Lodge 24, Cyclone Shirley S. Ashcraft is the newest youth leader of Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone.

She is the wife of Danny Ashcraft.

They have two children, a daughter Jennifer Ashcraft and a son, Jeffrey Ashcraft.

Her favorite hobbies include fishing place mats that we made for them.

I hope to see you at Czech Fest. and camping; also reading, sewing, Fraternally, and making crafts with her children.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister GLENDA SCHILLER YORK, who passed away Sunday, July 1, 1990 in a Waco hospital.

She was born May 31, 1949 in Caldwell and was the daughter of the late Alvin Glenn Schiller and Frances Wade Schiller. She was a graduate of Caldwell High School and attended Baylor University. She was a systems analyst for American Income Life In­ surance in Waco for 17 years.

She was a member of the First Bap­ tist Church in Caldwell, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 976, Caldwell Chapter, an active member of the Booster Club of Waco Christian School, and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

She married Gary Ray York on November 15, 1971 in Caldwell.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Frances Schiller and an infant daughter, Glenda Evelyn York.

Survivors include her husband, Gary York; one daughter, Aneece York and one son, William York, all of Waco; also three aunts, one uncle and several cousins.

Funeral services were held at 5 p.m.

Tuesday, July 3 from Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell with the Rev. Phil Lovelace officiating. Inter­ ment followed in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.

Pallbearers were Ray Boman, Randy Boman, Gene Barber, Kenneth Key, Johnny Price and Johnny Towslee.

He was born January 8, 1909 in East Bernard, Texas.

Brother Lupík was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where he served as financial advisor. He was a member of SVPS No. 7 in East Ber­ nard, also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 28 where he served as secretary-treasurer.

He was employed by Union State Bank for 44 years and served on the Board of Directors for the bank.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 226, East Bernard.

A rosary was recited Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard.

Funeral services were held Thursday from Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Inter­ ment followed in Holy Cross Cemetery, East Bernard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Lupík, in 1976.

Survivors include a sister, Agnes Kershaw from West Columbia; sister­ in-law, and husband Edie and John Szymanski of East Bernard; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Naše schze byla zahájena předsedou George Pavelkou ve 2 hodiny v neděli 9. září.

Po slibu věrnosti vlajce jsme měli tichou vzpomínku za zesnulé členy a sestry Helen Motl. Nosiči vlajek byli Amy Kohutek a Erin Škrabánek.

Všichni úředníci byli přítomni.

Dolores Škrabánek přečetla protokol z minulé schůze, který byl přijat tak, jak byl čten.

Byla přijata do řádu jenom Kelli Marie Pechal.

Sestra Judy Pechalová podala zprávu za dozorčí výbor a FAC Tim Reese oznámil, že podzimní schůze bude u řádu číslo 80 v Holland 23. září a rodinny večirek 21. září a také házene cvičeni (volleyball practice). Také od­ poručil aby jsme si přečetli ve Věstníku "Missions and Goals" článek cely.

Všichni úředníci byli přítomni. Vzdali jsme úctu americké vlajce a pronesli přísahu a pak jsme uc­ tili chvilkou ticha památku nedávno zemřelých sester Peggy E. Thackerové, která zemřela 7. července 1990 a Willie Mae Dorňákové, které zemřela 18. srpna 1990. Pozůstalým rodinám obou sester projevujeme upřímnou soustrast nad nepředstavitelnou ztrátou jejich drahých a čest budiž vzdána památce zemřelých ..

19. září 1990 tak, jak byl čten. Dále přečetla dopisy od prodejny hudebnin, kde prodávají sokolský zpěvník, nedávno vydaný sokolskou jednotou z Ft. Wroth. Dále obdržela dopis z Hlavní úřadovny. V tomto dopisuu se píše, aby naši členové a členky zjistili, kde jsou kolečkové ži­ dle anebo berly bez užitku a použili je pro pohodlí členů naší jednoty. Přišlo také pozvání na Den českého dědictví do Ft. Worth, Tx. Sestra Maxine Šefčíková podala její zprávu o stavu členstva a vybírání člen­ ských příspěvků. Zásluhou pilné práce našeho pojišťovacího agenta bratra Fredda Kaluži jsme získali čtyři nové členy a členky: Randi L. Priceovou, Kennetha W. Schelera a Dee Anna a Waltera M. Reavese, Jra., který pracu­ je ve městě jako právník. Rovněž do klubu mládeže byla zapsána Rachel Pareyová a od řádu 154 se k nám přidala rodina Allena D. Soukupa, Frances L. a děti Terry a Timothy. Členstvo se shodlo v tom, že je potřeba projevit uznání bratru F. Kalužovi, který byl nedávno prohlášen za nejlepšího prodavače pojištění ve 3. okrsku, což se stalo poprvé u našeho řádu.

Br. Freddie Kaluža přednesl zprávu o našich financích a byla jeho zpráva dobrá, máme nějaké částky na úroky v místních bankách a peníze přibývají.

Projednaly se otázka stavby plotu kolem našeho pozemku a Sokolové postaví plot v době, až se trochu ochladí a také počítají se změnami v srm . Kuchyně se přemístí z dosavadního místa dozadu a tím se uvolní větší místo pro sezení návštěvníků a též je nutno počítat s tím, že zákon o přístupu tělesně postižených osob na vozíčkách do veře­ jných budov bude se uplatňovat a pro­ to bude nutno upravit také sociální zařízení v tomto smyslu a celou budovu a hlavně vchody a východy.

Ses. Maxine Šefčíková přečetla dva dopisy, jeden z nich obsahoval doby a data různých krajanských podniků a druhý dopis nás žádal, abychom navrhli kandidáta na udělení nejlepšího bratrského člena. Přítomní se rozhodli určit jako kandidáta bratra Freddie Kalužu, protože letos pilně pracuje.

Dále členstvo projednalo vánoční zábavu, která se bude konat v neděli 2. prosince 1990 v naší síni a očekáváme hojnou účast členů. O hlavní jídlo je postaráno, každá rodina ať přinese nějaký zákusek. Tentokráte pošleme pozvání na tuto zábavu, která začne od tří hodin besedou členstva, po čtvrté hodině bude program mládeže a po páté hodině bude večeře. Každá rodina, která obdrží pozvánku, musí odpovědět do 18. listopadu 1990 a uvést v odpovědi, kolik členů rodiny přijde, aby kuchaři a kuchařky věděly, kolik mají připravit jídla. Na pro­ gramu bude velký počet výher, bohatá tombola a zajímavý program, takže je důležité, aby se vědělo, kolik bude lidí.

Losování vyhrál bratr Rudy Šefčík a další naše schůze bude v pátek 7. pro­ since 1990, tedyt jenom čtyři dny po naší vánoční zábavě. Doufáme, že při­ jdete v hojném počty.

Desítidílný článek -- první část.

Letos, 6.dubna 1990, tomu bylo jedenáct set a pět let co na moravském Velehradě zemřel slovanský věrozvěst svatý Metoděj, kterého s jeho bratrem Cyrilem (Konstantinem) postavil první slovanský papež Jan Pavel II po bok svat. Benediktovi, patriarchovi západního mnišství, jako patrona Evropy. Nynější papež již před řadou let zdůraznil evropanům, že hranice ' evropského kontinentu nevytvořila neblahá konference na Jaltě nýbrž kultura křesťanských tradic, která spojuje jednou pro vždy všechny evropské národy, mezi nimiž zaujímají početně první místo Slované.

U kolébky křest'ansko-slovanské kultury stojí apoštolé Slovanů, patroni Evropy Cyril a Metoděj, kteří začali své dalekosáhlé dílo na území naší staré vlasti. Tito věrozvěsti pocházeli z řeckého města Tesaloniky, které navštívil sv. Pavel za jeho apoštolských cest v nynějším Recku a Řecku tehdejsím v Malé Asii. Rodné město Cyrila a Metoděje v Tesalonii v severním Řecku je též nazýváno slovanským jménem Soluň, jelikož v jeho okolí žilo tedy i řadu století . později mnoho obyvatelů slovanského původu. Město Soluň či Tesalonika leží v oblasti zvané Tesalonie (Thessaly), která se nachází mezi severně a severovýchodně od ní ležící Macedonií a jižně od ní se nacházejícího vlastního Řecka jakož i epirské pahorkatiny a aegeanského území. Tesalonií vedou všechny cesty po souši z poloostrova Peloponesu, který je srdcem Řecka, do severních oblastí tohoto státu.

Tesalonské území je takřka čtvercového tvaru; zhruba 50 mil x 50 mil, neboli 81 x 81 kolometrů. V severovýchodním rohu této části Řecka se nachází bájná hora Olymp, kde v antické době "vládl" Deus a nacházelo se "sídlo pohanského nebe." Město Tesalonika (Soluň) je pro nás především známé z Nového zákona dvěma listy apoštola Pavla nazvanými " Epištol a s vat.

Metoděj jež měl 6 bratří se narodil v rodině zámožného vysokého vojenského důstojníka jménem Leo. Jeho matka se jmenovala Marie; mladší bratr Konstantin (Cyril), zvaný ve svém mládí přídomkem filosof, jež se těšil Metodějově velké oblibě, narodil v roce 827. Jména dalších Metodějových bratří se nezachovala.

Metodějův bratr Konstantin přijal jméno Cyril, když p.a sklonku svého života vstoupil v Rímě de kláštera.

Toto přijaté jeho jméno se záhy v

se

celém křesťanském světě tak rozšířilo, že se na původní Cyrilovo křestní jméno Konstantin takřka zapomělo.

Jelikož tento fakt je též zřejmý z působení soluňských bratří na Velké Moravě tak nazývám i já mladšího Metodějova bratra jménem Cyril, namísto Konstantin, v rámci tohoto článku.

Oba nadaní bratři dostali již v útlém věku to nejlepší-vzdělání jak jen bylo možné v rodném městě. Cyril pak studoval na císařském dvoře v Konstantinopoli, zatím co jeho starší bratr Metoděj po ukončení svých studií se stal guvernérem slovanské provincie, oblast Strymon, v Horní Macedonii.

Metoděj, laskavý a spravedlivý správce tohoto císařského území, byl záhy však znechucen podvody a příživnictvím vládních kruhů a celkovou dekadencí byzanského císařství. Z těchto důvodů se vzdal svého úřadu a odešel do kláštera na konstantinopolském Olym­ pu u moře Marmary, vzniklého rozšířením pověstných dardanelských úžin.

Tu byl později vysvěcen na kněze.

V roce 841 zemřel Metodějův otec Leo a příští rok byzanský císař Teofil (Theophilus), s jehož synem se vzdělával na císařském dvoře Metodějův bratr Cyril. Prozatímním regentem mladého následníka trůnu Michala se stala jeho matka Theodora, která schválila žádost císařského kancléře Theoktista nějak zaměstnat Cyrila, právě skvěle ukončivšího svá studia, ve státní službě přímo v Cařihradu, v hlavním městě byzanského císařství. Do tohoto úsilí zasáhl též cařihradský patriarcha lg­ nacius, který povýšil Cyrila na jáhna a ustanovil ho ředitelem knihovny při katedrále sv. Sofie. -- Katedrála či basilika sv. Sofie (Holy Wisdom church) je ze šestého století. Se stavbou bylo započato v roce 532 a tento velechrám, jeden z největších v křesťanském světě, byl vysvěcen o vánocích roku 538. Po dobytí Konstan­ tinopolu Turky vedenými sultánem Mohamedem II koncem května v roce 1453 po více jak jedenácti měsíčním obléhání (poslední byzanský císař Konstantin Palaeologus padl hrdin­ skou smrtí v pouličních bojích, když Turci vnikli do města), byl k této svatyni externě postaven v každém rohu, čtvercově, minaret a vevnitř odstraněna velká většina vzácných fresek, jelikož tento křesťanský velechrám byl změněn "právem vítěze" v tureckou mešitu. -- Vraťme se však do čtvrtého desíteletí roku 800 k Cyrilovi, mladšímu bratrovi Metoděje.

Měsíc po ustanovení správcem knihovny při basilice sv. Sofie, Cyril odešel tajně z Cařihradu do blízkého kláštera na blízkém konstantinopolském Olympu na pobřeží moře Marmary, chtějíc tu jak bratr Metoděj věnovat se službě Bohu. Za necelých 6 měsíců jeho úkryt byl však objeven a Cyril byl přemluven kancléřem Theoktistem vrátit se k císařskému dvoru do Konstantinopolu jako učitel filosofie. Za Dítě - toto jméno sladké, malou chvíli se již celé kino směje. My ženě nebem daný dar, se také dobře bavíme. Když se potom matky - nejdražší co máme, na ulici loučíme, ještě se usmíváme. dejme ~lasti v její zdar!

ISION '90 ** SWEEPSTAKES·** Announcing a new contest that will get everyone involved in preparing our great Society for its voyage into the '90s. The success of VISION '90 will depend on the effort put forth by our members to tell others about the SPJST. For example, did you ever want to invite your friend, neighbor, or co-worker to join SPJST but didn't know how to go about it? wén, now we're going.to tell you how!!

WHO'S ELIGIBLE?? -All active SPJST members. Sales representatives and members of their immediate household along with Home Office personnel are not eligible.

HOW DO I ENTER?? -Send us the name(s) of people you would like to see join the SPJST by completing the coupon below and mailing it to our Insurance Department. If you would like to recommend several people, attach a separate sheet and mail to us. ONLY LIFE INSURANCE SALES ON NEW MEMBERS WILL COUNT FOR THIS CONTEST. After we receive your recommendation, we will register it and forward it to a sales representative for contact. All referrals must be registered through the Home Office to count towards the contest. If you would like to also recommend a sales representative to contact your person, indicate his name on the coupon below. If you do not list a sales representative, one will be assigned through our office.
