Minutes Of The Third Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held July 9-11, 1990 At The Home Office In Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge mem­ bers present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

AUDIT ASSIGNMENTS - The meeting was convened at 9 a.m. and audit as­ signments were made. Recess was taken until 1 p.m. to allow time to complete the audit.

MINUTES - The minutes of the April 11-12, 1990 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered page-by-page. There were no corrections and the minutes were accepted as presented on unanimously adopted motion by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Vanek.

OFFICERS' REPORTS - The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknow­ ledged on unanimously adopted motion by Director Broz and seconded by .Director Hanus. (Reports will be placed in Exhibits Volume 9.)

OLD BUSINESS PRESIDENT LESHIKAR'S

BY-LA WS DISCUSSION - There was a discussion about by-laws concerning the following topics: · ( 1) Procedure in approving insurance plans.

(2) Responsibility and procedure in organizing new lodges.

(3) Authority to audit local lodge books.

Recess for the day was taken from 5: 15 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. for the night ses­ sion in the Crockett Room at the Holiday Inn in Temple, Texas.

The meeting was reconvened at 7:30 p.m. for the purpose of working on the fourth draft of the Goals and Objectives for the SPJST. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska opened the .dis­ cussion and coordinated the consideration of the Goals and Objectives.

Informal discussion took place and changes to the draft were made by infor­ mal vote to facilitate the .process the entire draft would be considered for ap­ proval at a later time. The first 14 pages were completed and recess for the day was taken at 10:15 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. on July 10, 1990.

Meeting reconvened 8:30 a.m. on July 10, 1990.

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: After discussion, the previous motion to raise the mortality charge on Univer­ sal Life to 100 percent was rescinded. The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unanimously. After due deliberation, Vice President Gebala recommended that we set the mortality charge at a median rate on new Universal Life policies sold after the date set for the change. It was estimated that the median mortality charge would be ap­ proximately 85 percent and the plan should be implemented by August l , 1990 if possible. Director Vanek so moved, Director Hanus seconded it and the mo­ tion carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS MATTERS:

CHARTER LODGE RESTORATION - Report was made on the status of the restoration of Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville. There was a question about steps that are being taken to assure that once the lodges are restored that the buildings will be maintained and kept in good repair.

LODGE MERGER - Report was made that Lodge No. 44, Industry had merged into Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville.

LODGE REACTIVATIONS - Status report was made on the reactivations of Lodge No. 106, La Grange. Positive reaction· was reported. Efforts are being made to reorganize No. 184, Moulton and Lodge No. 103, Flatonia.

VISION '90 REPORT - It was reported that 98 sales' leads were submitted, there were 19 applications written and 79 sales' leads are pending.

SALES TRAINING - Status report was made on the Quick Start II program for sales representatives.

COMMISSION FOR FIELD FORCE - The 1/2 percent commission to the State Field Manager and three field representatives was approved on motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vavra and carried unanimously.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES REPORT - There was discussion about informa­ tion in a report of lodge fraternal activities tabulated for the National Fraternal Congress. Some thirteen lodges did not respond to the questionnaire. Some eleven lodges responded that they did not hold meetings.

INACTIVE LODGES - It was suggested that a positive approach be taken by taking steps to reorganize lodges not holding meetings.

After discussion, President Leshikar made a motion that efforts be made to get lodges to submit reports and to hold lodge meetings and determine what the lodge members want to do. If there is no response and they cannot be reac­ tivated, the lodges should be merged. The motion was seconded by Director Vanek and it carried unanimously. It was understood that if the lodges could not be reactivated or merged, they would not be entitled to the lodge premium refund or representation at the SPJST Convention.

FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR - A motion was adopted to submit the 1989 Fraternalist of the Year to the NFCA. The motion to approve was by Director Broz, seconded by Director Kohutek and was unanimously adopted.

LIBRARY-ARCHIVES-MUSEUM - The museum reportedly hosted 1,270 visitors this past quarter. The list included several visitors from foreign countries and good response from regional school districts.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATIONS - The Board reviewed a list of col­ leges and schools responding to a questionnaire. Affirmative responses were received from four colleges and schools. After discussion the following Czech language allocation amounts were approved by common consent for institutions teaching the Czech language: $1,000 for Universities $800 for Junior Colleges $600 for High Schools On motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by President Leshikar, it was decided that any funds remaining from the allocation be channeled through the Czech Educational Foundation to a Texas institution teaching the Czech lan­ guage. The motion carried with eleven in favor and Director Vavra abstained.

REO No. 170 - A residence located at 1700 N. Preston in Ennis, Texas. Book value is $127 ,998.47. The property is listed for sale at $99;500. The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Pokladnik have full authority for listing the proper­ ty, negotiation and sale of property.

REO No. 176 - A residence on a 5-acre tract in Burleson County, Texas.

Book value is $31,224.64 and the property is listed for sale for $17,900 with Shaw Realty. Supreme Lodge officers and Director Vavra have full authority to negotiate and sell the properly.

REO No. 177 - A residence located on South 53rd Street in Temple. The book value was $12,123.39. The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Kohutek sold the property to the borrowers for a cash payment of $12,749.68. After report, the sale was ratified on unanimously adopted motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Vice President Gebala.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE OWNED/REAL ESTATE LOANS Report was made that real estate owned and delinquent real estate loans were evaluated and a potential loss reserve was set on each property. The setting of reserves is a conservative measure to properly manage this area. The following loss reserves were reported: REAL ESTATE LOANS - $66,800.00 REAL ESTATE OWNED - 89,000.00 SURVEY CONCERNING LOAN ESCROW ACCOUNTS - A survey of 200 randomly selected borrowers (20.28 percent of total loans) was conducted with the following results: (1) 136 or 68 percent responded.

(2) 29 or 21.323 percent indicated interest in an escrow account.

(3) 107 or 78.677 percent did not want an escrow account.

(4) 5 of the negative responses stated they would be interested if we paid in­ terest on the escrow deposit.

SYD CLAUDETTE REESE - SYD Reese was asked into the meeting to present her report. She discussed the success of the Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Retreat and expressed appreciation that the Board approved the LIT Retreat.

We have not received a copy of the 990 or 990-T from seven lodges for the 1989 year end.

She called attention to the State Royalty set for August 18 at SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton and the SYAD set for the following day (August 19) at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas.

Recess fot lunch was taken from 11:45 a.m. until 1 p.m.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: VESTNIK - Report was made that Vestnik subscribers total 8,878 which is an increase of 105 during the year.

INDEPENDENT AUDITS - The report of the independent audit conducted by the accounting firm of Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd, and Therrell, P.C., was reviewed together with the management letter.

A copy of the financial statement was provided to the State Board of In­ surance as required by insurance law.

The reports were reviewed, studied and ratified on motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Vice President Gebala and it carried unanimously.

A motion was passed to obtain bids for an independent audit for the 1990 year. The unanimously adopted motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Vavra and it carried. · STATE BOARD AUDIT - The management letter of the State Board of In­ surance audit was reviewed. The full report of the audit has not been received and will be reviewed by the Board when it is received.

IBM COMPUTER INSTALLATION - Final installation of the IBM AS 400/Model 35 has been completed, except for some software enhancements.

Total amount authorized was $175,000 and costs to date have amounted to $139,471.79 which was well within the budgeted amount.

BUDGET - An itemized listing of all income and expense for the first six months of 1990 was reviewed. Those items that exceeded 50 percent of the budgeted amount were individually reviewed. Expenses for the first six montns of 1990 were reported to be down over the previous year.

LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: LITIGATION - TAX SUITS(fHREATENED TAX SUITS - Tax suits and threatened tax suits in connection with borrowers were reviewed.

She discussed the camps, candy sales, youth club attendance and the Texas Outdoor Association (TOEA).

She requested permission for DYCs to attend the TOEA. She also asked for a monetary prize of $1 O for each scrapbook and poster entry in the Texas Frater­ nal Congress Poster and Scrapbook contest. She suggested that the Youth Department and Museum Department again host a Saturday Open House for area teachers and business-people during the Christmas Season.

On unanimously adopted motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, the DYCs were authorized the $60 tuition to attend the TOEA Retreat, October 5- 7.

A motion was passed to authorize a $10 monetary award to all entries in the TFC poster and scrapbook· contest. The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Kohutek carried unanimously.

The Youth Department/Museum Open House <luring the Christmas Season for area teachers/business people was authorized on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by DirectorBroz and carrried unanimously.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES - The remainder of the day was devoted to con­ sidering the Goals and Objectives. The review was completed and it was under­ stood that the Goals and Objectives would be considered for formal approval the following morning.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:35 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. July 11, 1990.

Discussion returned to the Goals and Objectives. On motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Broz, the Goals and Objectives as amended and corrected were approved. The motion carried unanimously. The Goals and Ob­ jectives are as follows:

DIRECTOR VAVRA - He gave a detailed report on his work to reorganize lodges in District I. He presented a portion of the audit report. Explanations were asked and given on general items pertaining to bankruptcies.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - He reported on his travels and activities during the quarter.

DIRECTOR BROZ - He stated that he found it helpful to receive the Supreme Lodge officers' reports before the meeting. He reported on a portion of the audit report and stated that the books were found in good order and the reports provided were helpful.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He reported on presentation of scholarships to scholar­ ship recipients. He stated that the YAD in District V was well planned and out­ standing.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He discussed the presentation of two age 96 presenta­ tion ceremonies. He said he enjoyed both of the presentations. He reported on the success of a polkafest in Inez sponsored by Lodges 97 and 143.

She said she appreciated the guidelines for district meetings prepared by the president. She reported on the .audit of the securities in the bank vault and stated that the auditors accounted for all securities.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - He discussed his attendance of the NFCA frater­ nal section and the communications section meeting. He shared many of the good ideas from the sessions with the Board members and provided printed material to be shared with the Board members.

The need for the company way of doing business will be communicated to all levels of the organization. A portion of each officer's workshop will be devoted to member service. Service training will also be included in sales representative training.

Detailed breakdown of expenses will be provided to the Supreme Lodge on a monthly basis beginning in July, 1990.

The Supreme Lodge will analyze operations with the objective of reducing expenses wherever possible. Reports will be made to the board on those items that can be reduced. An annual budget will be prepared beginning with July, 1990. It is understood that some items such as death claims, surrenders, etc. are not conducive to budgeting. · In ample time before the first preconvention Finance Committee meeting, the Supreme Lodge will analyze operations and with the assistance of the actuary and other sources make realistic profitability assumptions, to determine an amount that can be allocated by the convention for the ensuing four years. The Finance Committee will be advised that management does not feel it prudent to spend more than is determined to be within the Society's means.

(2) Utilize a lodge selected sales force reimbured by commission only.

(3) Utilize one state field manager and up to ten or more area sales repre­ sentatives in geographic areas.

(4) Develop a phase in plan so that a portion of reimbursement for the area sales representatives will be through commission.

(5) The area sales representatives will be responsible for a portion of the training and motivating local sales representatives.

(6) The Board will be kept informed of the success and problems in imple­ menting this marketing plan.

(7) Utilize target marketing approaches. Example youth club members, by age group, etc.

(9) Utilize lodges to promote product sales and utilize lodge meetings and activities to inform membership about products.

The local sales representatives will be initially-oriented and trained by the SFM and trained primarily by the areas' sales representatives; however, struc­ tured classes will be provided by the Vice President and/or the state field manager at least twice annually. The progress and training of new sales repre­ sentatives will be supervised by the state field manager; however, the area sales representatives will be expected to conduct a significant portion of the training in product knowledge and sales skills.

After a sales representative develops good product knowledge, emphasis will be placed on sales' skills. Initial training of a new representative will begin within two weeks from his appointment.

The state field manager and area sales representatives will strive to train rep­ resentatives to analyze customers' individual needs, and developing sales' goals that meet the SPJST goals. They will skillfully coach and give construc­ tive criticism and their full support.

Train sales representatives to present information on products at lodge meet­ ings and activities and at gatherings outside of the SPJST. MOTIVATION-PLAN

FAC OVERVIEW AND STRATEGY Introduction: As determined by our previous review of the strengths and weaknesses of the SPJST, we realized that in order to get the membership involved in local lodge activities the SPJST must establish programs that will interest all age groups.

The programs must be relevant to today's society; for example, programs against drug and child abuse. When members participate in programs that benefit people in need, they feel a great sense of self-worth. This is the . philosophy of the SPJST -- "Friends helping friends."

(1) Determine the increase and type of lodge activities that will be necessary

to attract and get members involved in the lodge. These activities must be directly related to today's society.

(2) Utilize one state FAC and up to seven district FACs. (3) The district FACs will be responsible for a portion of the training and

motivating of local FACs. (4) The Board will be kept informed of the success and problems in imple­ menting this FAC plan.

The intent of the commission pay plan is to provide a strong incentive to those area sales representatives who are successful in generating a high level of new premium income and certificate production from their areas.

(5) Better utilize lodges to promote the SPJST by community service projects.

Incentive programs/contests will be devised for Board approval. A set amount of minimum premium income production and certificate production will be re­ quired by any sales representative to claim their win. The Board will set the amount of the prizes commensurate with the level of premium income being produced.

(6) Communicate the importance of FAC positions and seek to have willing and enthuiastic individuals selected. ·

NEW SALES REPRESENT A TI VES-PLAN E It is our goal that every lodge have at least one active sales representative by December, 1991. It is our goal that every lodge have at least two active sales representatives by December 1994.

The effort to secure new sales representatives to be spearheaded by the Vice· President who will communicate to all levels the need to enlist new sales repre­ sentatives. (S.L. Officers, S.L. Directors, State Field Manager and area sales representatives, SYD, FAC, local lodge officers.)

A substantial portion of refunds to lodges will be determined by first year premium income under a five-year phase in program beginning with I 990.

The purpose of the plan is to enlist the full support of local lodges in appoint­ ing sales representatives and providing them with leads and give the lodges a strong incentive to help the organization reach its marketing and membership goals.

Beginning in 1990, the first stage of a formula will be implemented to pay larger refunds to lodges producing more new business and meeting other re­ quirements.

Decision must be made when pricing a new product if the pricing will include provision for premium refund to the member _and premium refund to the lodge.

This will allow free publicity for our organization.

FAC TRAINING The FAC will be required to begin a structured and ongoing training program which should include supervision and training segments in areas such as com­ munity involvement, knowledge of service projects, and items of interest which would directly benefit the lodge and its members.

The district FACs will be provided with a board approved initial training pro­ gram. The state FAC will supervise ongoing training on group and individual basis. The area FACs will be expected to attain a good level of knowledge of the areas in paragraph Number One. The area FACs will also need to develop motivational skills necessary to institute these programs at the lodge level and keep interest alive.

The lodge FAC will be trained by the state and district FAC. The progress and training of new FACs will be supervised by the state FAC. After a FAC develops good rapport with community leaders, emphasis will be placed on community involvement of the lodge. Initial training of a new FAC will begin within two weeks of his election to this position.

The state FAC and area FACs will strive to train new FACs to analyze the position of the lodge within the community and be attuned to any new programs that would benefit the members of the lodge or get the lodge involved in an upcoming event. The state FAC will skillfully coach and give construc­ tive criticism along with full support.

Train FACs to present information about the SPJST lodges to the local com­ munities.

MOTIVATION The state FAC will maintain frequent contact with district FACs and with other members.

The district FACs will strive to contact each lodge FAC at least once monthly to motivate.

A monthly motivation/training newsletter will be mailed to each lodge FAC. Each newsletter will include topics concentrating on possible lodge activities and involvement projects.

Workshops will be conducted at the district and state levels.

Motivate to project the winner image and encourage others to be involved and also to be winners.

Each Supreme Lodge member and designated persons will communicate the goals and objectives of the organization through public speaking and every op­ portunity available.

INVESTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Our general objective is to constantly preserve assets and maximize invest­ ment income within acceptable levels of financial risk, market risk and interest rate risk.

NEW BUSINESS MATTERS:

CHARITY PROJECT - President Leshikar brought up for consideration a wheelchair and crutches project. President Leshikar moved that the project be pursued and given further consideration after he obtains more information and attempt is made to locate donated wheelchairs and crutches. The motion was seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and it carried unanimously. It was understood that we seek to involve our local lodges from the standpoint of collecting items, storage and distribution.

A scholarship drive was discussed. The drive was considered on the basis of seeking a personal per member donation to be used for scholarships. Secretary­ Treasurer Mikeska moved that we postpone consideration of the scholarship fund drive until the next meeting to allow time to gather more information on the proposal. Director Hanus seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

On the matter of a fund drive to benefit the Special Olympics, it was decided on unanimously adopted motion to gather more information on this possible project. The motion was by President Leshikar and seconded by Vice President Gebala.

Consideration was given to a request for assistance with Medical supplies in Czechoslovakia. Vice President Gebala moved that the matter be tabled until more information is available. Director Vanek seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM SIGN - It was agreed to have our sign refinished and information about the museum be added. The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

SOCIETY FLAG - After discussion, it was decided to proceed with develop­ ment of an SPJST flag. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and carried Unanimously.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS • The NFCA annual meeting is scheduled for October 4-6 in Portland, Oregon. The Board affirmed that any Supreme Lodge member desiring to attend be authorized to attend as agreed upon previously. It was reported that the past year, only two Supreme Lodge members attended.

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: PROSPECTIVE LODGES IN PROCESS - Report was made on prospective lodges inn process in the following communities: Marlin, Yorktown, Bruceville/Eddy.

NEW PLANS OF INSURANCE - Consideration was given to new plans of insurance. It was agreed to do more research on: 1. Life insurance with an educational fund plan 2. Guaranteed insurability plan 3. A single premium plan for aged individuals 4. Living benefits rider 5. Other plans as determined by the Vice President such as a plan for senior citizens for age 65 and older.

FFMA MEETING - Vice President Gebala stated he found his attendance of the Fraternal Field Managers Association board meeting in South Carolina to be beneficial.

SECOND QUARTER INVESTMENTS - A list of real estate loans and invest­ ments was reviewed and the loans and investments/sales were ratified. The mo­ tion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

BROKERAGE ACCOUNTS - After discussion, opening of a securities ac­ count was authorized with the firm of Lovett Underwood Neuhaus and Webb, Inc. Execution of the forms and Resolutions was authorized on motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT SOFTWARE - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that our existing software for investment management required changes and enhance­ ments to allow better control and management of our investments.

UNIVERSAL LIFE RATE - After review of investment yield statistics, it was decided to leave the Universal Life rate at 8 1/2 percent for the period effective August 1, 1990 through October 31, 1990. The motion was by Secretary­ Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and it carried u­ nanimously.

ANNUITIES - After due consideration, the annuity rate was left at 7.6 per­ cent effective August 1, 1990 through October 31, 1990. The motion was by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unani­ mously.

The immediate annuity payout rate was set at 8 percent for the period effec­ tive August I, 1990 through October 31, 1990. The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Hanus and it carried unanimously.

MEMBERSHIP LONG DISTANCE PLAN - Proposals from three long dis­ tance phone companies were reviewed. Two of the plans offered commission rebates to the Society. The plans offer special long distance telephone rates to our members if we chose to enter into an agreement with the long distance phone company, and this could be a valuable benefit to our members. Although the plan cannot be used in all areas of the state, it would be available to a majority of our members having equal access. After due consideration, it was decided to accept the NTX plan which offered the lowest rates and no rebate of commission to the Society, provided that we can work out all details to our satisfaction. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Hrncir and it carried unanimously.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: BREAKDOWN OF EXPENSES - A motion was unanimously adopted that reports be generated by function breakdown of expenses. The motion was by Director Kohutek and seconded by Director Broz.

DELINQUENT LODGES - Report was made on five lodges delinquent with premiums.

INCOME AND EXPENSES - A report was reviewed comparing income and expenses for 1990 with the same period of 1989.

VISION '90 SWEEPSTAKES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on savings in producing the brochures within the office.

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS - There was a review of year-to-date policy new issues and policy terminations.

EMERGENCY BREAKDOWN INSURANCE - Emergency breakdown in­ surance was approved for all Supreme Lodge members by common consent.

LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: GENERAL MATTERS - There was a discussion of legislative changes that impact construction loans and the renewal and extension of Mechanic's liens.

Our established policy of handling such loans will be continued as long as we can obtain acceptable mortgagee title policy coverage and a sufficient safety factor is maintained.

DIRECTORS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: DIRECTOR VAVRA - He expressed appreciation for the quick response by the vice president's department in training new sales representatives in reor­ ganized lodges.

He reported on feedback from one lodge concerning the SPJST scholarships and our method of awarding the scholarships.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - He stated that he concluded that the officers and staff are doing an outstanding job and said much had been accomplished during the meeting.

DIRECTOR BROZ - He spoke about the reports and what had been ac­ complished during the meeting. He was encouraged by the Vision '90 contest and the new things we are undertaking.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He stated he agreed with the favorable comments of the other directors. He stated we should look into the business of getting a project going concerning the drug problem in this day and time.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He reported that he planned to do more work on reac­ tivating the inactive lodges within District VI. He commented that we had a good meeting.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR - She stated she was happy that we adopted our mis­ sions and goals and what had been accomplished during this meeting.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - He stated that there should be some information

about our scholarship program with the calendar since it reaches the greatest amount of our members. He reminded the Board members that they have the responsibility of making the important decisions for the good of our member­ ship. He stated that he felt many good conclusions were reached and stated he appreciated the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Board. He presented a recommendation from a lodge in District III that the SPJST have a Horseshoe Tournament and the Resolution was forwarded to President Leshikar for con­ sideration.

Authorization was granted to Director Pokladník and President Leshikar to at­ tend the KJT Convention on unanimously adopted motion by Director Broz, seconded by President Leshikar.

President Leshikar moved that the possibility of a Horseshoe Tournament be researched for consideration at the next Supreme Lodge meeting. Director Kohutek seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

Authorization was granted to Director Pokladnik to attend the CSA Conven­ tion. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and carried unanimously.

The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin at 9 a.m. October 8, 1990 .

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladník adjourned the meeting at 4:30 p.m.

*** Horseshoe Rules FIELD··

To make a playing field you need an area about 1 O feet wide and about 50 feet long.

The stakes should be iron. They extend 8 inches above the ground and are in­ clined slightly toward one another. They are 40 feet apart. For women the dis­ tance is 30 feet. In order to use the same court, just put a ribbon marker I O feet ahead of each stake, that ribbon will mark the place from which the women will toss their horseshoes.

HORSESHOES •• Regulation horseshoes are 7 1/2 inches long and 7 inches wide at the widest part. The opening at the calks should exceed 3 1/2 inches. Weight is 2 1/'2 pounds. The calks should not exceed 3/4 of an inch.

RULES·· 1. Earth should be soft around the peg.

2. To determine what side begins the game, each player throws one horseshoe toward the peg. The closest will start the game. After that the winner always shoots first.

3. There is only one category in horseshoes. It is not separate for the men and women. They play together. The only difference is that the women throw their horseshoe from a 30-foot distance.

4. Points are scored as follows: 1. One point for each shoe nearest the peg.

2. A leaner counts three points.

3. Five points are scored for a ringer.

4. Twenty-one points constitute a game.

Description of Point Counting If the opponent also has a leaner, the two are tied and no point is allowed.

A ringer is a shoe that fits around the peg, so that both prongs are around the peg. (A straight edge must be able to touch both calks beyond the peg.)

If one player scores a ringer, and an opponent throws another ringer on top of it, both scores are cancelled and the other two shoes are measured to see which player gets one point.

If a player has two shoes closer to the peg than the opponent, he receives two points.

If a horseshoe slides unto the peg regardless of distance, it is permissible.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Hello Readers: Our regular Lodge 6 meeting was held Friday, August 9, 1990 at 8:20 p.m. and it was called to order by President Johnnie Krizan.

Pledge to the flag and SPJST motto were led by Tammi Dobecka and recited by all members present.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of our last meeting.

Treasurer Karen Kroll was absent be­ cause she and her husband and family were celebrating their 6th wedding an­ niversary. Congratulations!

Next was Financial Secretary George Straten reading his statement; he also reported on the discussion held by our Board of Trustees' last meeting per­ taining to the upcoming WESTFEST and also expressed his personal thanks to all who helped at our annual Lodge 6 picnic.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her report on the youth club ac­ tivities. They brought pastry to West Rest Haven's birthday party residents.

There were two accepted additional policies for Karen Hlavaty and Ruth Krizan.

New Business: The president asked for volunteers to work and help at WESTFEST. The membership nominated President Johnnie Krizan as chairman and he was voted to this position and, now being the chairman, he asked all those who helped and worked at our booth for all those pre­ vious years to be kind and accept their sames positions. We will need your help, especially hauling and setting up the booth at WESTFEST GROUNDS. We hope the same crew will be able to help because they are the ones who know how to do it for all those past years.

Willie Mae Schuetz accepted as chairperson for the inside workers' booth and hopefully the same ones can and will help as in the past. Please don't refuse when asked. The days are Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2. Willie Mae will give the hours of your shifts almost as same as last year.

The other portion of the meeting was presentation of a check to Debbie (Uptmor) Ivy in memory of Teresa Mae Dobecka Memorial Fund; it was presented by her brother, Bobby Dobecka,. on behalf of his parents, Robert and Lydia Dobecka. Debbie will attend MMC College in Waco.

A big thank you to all, again, to those who bought tickets and to those members who donated some items; also another thank you note to all the businesses and friends, plus those who attended our picnic.

The meal cooked and served for our meeting was by President Johnnie Krizan; he had a good variety of dishes, some other members brought homebaked sweets. They bragged about the server. A few members were teasing him all this year that it was his turn to prepare the meal. They thought he couldn't or wouldn't do it, but he did. Now, I guess they will be satis­ fied.

Our next lodge meeting will be Sun­ day, September 9 at 1 p.m. and the board meeting will be Friday, Septem­ ber 7 at 8 p.m. and our meeting dinner will be prepared by Willie Mae Schuetz. We always have good meals so you all be sure and come and try it; you will be glad you did.

Now it came time, again, for today's prize winner who was Cyrill Svrcek.

Fred didn't want to take one of his cantaloupes back home, so he gave it to the president.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Dear Friends: Buckholts Lodge No. 15 had its regular monthly meeting Sunday, August 12th.

President Gladys Allison called the meeting to order.

A financial report was given with everything in good standing.

The lodge will hold another fun night on August 30 at 7 p.m. Everyone is in­ vited to come.

Our Tarok Tournament will be held on September 22nd. Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. and play will start at 9:30 a.m.

Andrew Vavra will give Lodge No. 39 a bid on some tables and chairs which they have for sale.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: Our August meeting was called to order by President LaVerne Cabla and all officers were present.

Membes stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for deceased members.

Those celebrating birthdays in August are Milton Zavodny, Keith

Anniversary celebrants are Mark and Valerie Sebek.

Minutes of the July meeting were read and approved; also monthly reports were given out by the chairmen of various committees.

Carol Chervenka brought up the fact that it was time to donate some money.

It was suggested that we donate the use of the hall for a fund-raiser for a Mr. Howeth of Rogers who is in need of a liver transplant; also $500 to be donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

The motions were made, seconded and passed.

A thank you to Brother Leonard Mikeska for volunteering to paint the front entrance of our hall; it really looks nice.

New members voted on were Billy Ray Stone and Joe Dreyer, Jr. We hope to see both of you at our lodge func­ tions, soon.

Getting back to Brother Albert Lupík. He slipped away at 7:05 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7th. He was 81 years and 7 months old, lacking one day. A member of the lodge for 60plus years, he was named "Frnternalist of the Year" in 1988. He volunteered for the service in WW II and was laid to rest with full military honors. He will be missed by all who had worked with him and, for sure; not forgotten because of the things he had done for the lodge.

Members of SPJST Lodge No. 49 met Wednesday, August 1st in the lodge hall at 7 :30 p.m.

District IV Director Stanley Broz was in attendance.

The president, secretary and finan­ cial secretary were present: the vice president was absent due to a death in the family.

Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited in unison.

A moment of silence was observed for _our departed Brothers Ed Walther, Jr. and Ed Jansa.

Minutes were read and approved, with the exception of the financial report, which was corrected.

Financial Secretary Eddie Mae .Huebner reported the transactions of the last 3 months.

Building Fund and Bar Fund were also reported.

Thank you notes were read from Mrs. Annie Faltisek and the family of Johnny Ecker for the use of our lodge, and coffee/tea served after the funeral.

A letter was received from Supreme Lodge thanking Lodge No. 49 for holding the recent Tarok Tournament here. Director Broz made favorable comments on the tournament.

St. Joseph School Reunion Chairman Pat Vancil sent a note thanking our lodge for the loan of tables/chairs for their occasion.

Emil Havlak said he would be at­ tending the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Directors' meeting on the following week.

Harvey Maas and his wife donated 48 folding chairs to our lodge.

Pauline Shiller moved the lodge members meet very month to cut down in lengthy meetings, with some form of entertainment and refeshments.

The motion was voted down. Meet­ ings will continue every 3 months.

Elizabeth Walther moved that our lodge sponsor a highway cleaning a mile or two, involving SPJST youth members.

The motion did not pass.

The Men's Baseball Tournament was held August 17th and 18th. Our lodge ladies working in the refreshments stand for two days included Elizabeth Walther, Elizabeth Urbanek and Lula Maracek: helping out the second day were Eddie Mae Huebner, Emma Hav­ lak and Pauline Shiller.

The Ladies' Baseball Tournament will be held August 24th through 26th.

Door prizes were won by Emit Hav­ lak and JuJie Liso, both donated the money to our Birthday Fund.

Lodge President Ted Kocian called the meeting to order. After everyone stood and recited the Pledge of Al­ legiance to our flag, we remained standing for a few moments of silence for our departed members and Mr. Joe Kasik, Sr., who died April 26, 1990.

Secretary Anne Emery read the min­ tues of the March 2 meeting. These were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was approved as read. She reported that we have the following new adult members, Michael R. Matus, Michelle R. Hutyra, Johnny R. Hutyra and Lillian F. Matus. Two new youth members are Jeremy J. Prnka and Jaime S. Zahirniak: also ad­ ditional insurance has been purchased

by Ronnie F. Kaluza. We welcome all of these new members into our lodge.

In addition to her report, she also reported that our lodge had four West High School graduates in 1990, name­ ly, Richard Anthony, Jeffrey Hol­ loman, Pamela Kucera and Brian Scott. These graduates were recipients of various awards and scholarships.

Jennifer Neckar received an award in English I and Christopher Anthony graduated with honors from Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in 'Waco. We are very proud of these stu­ dents and wish them the very best in the future.

The meeting was adjourned. Brother John Emery was the winner of the door prize. Refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed by all. A delicious din­ ner was served. Many thanks to Sisters Josephine Kocian and Lil Matus for the preparation and serving of the din­ ner.

Lodge No. 66, Waco Meeting Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President Mary Alice Langlotz.

by Justin Engelke. Then, everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased mem­ ber, Brother Jerry Parma.

All officers were present.

We had one visitor, Jane Galler. We hope to see you, again.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and were approved. She also read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting and they were approved.

The Entertainment Committee report was given by Sister Sophie Leshikar.

For September 23rd, mee tng, they will serve spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad and garlic bread plus drinks. Members are asked to bring desserts. She also read a thank you note from Linda Steinhauser and sons.

Brother George Pauling gave the fraternal activities' report. There was a good attendance at our August social game night. Our next social game night will beSeptember 10th at 7 p.m.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a Resolution of Sympathy for deceased member, Brother Jerry Parma.

There was a donation to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund by Brother Jim and Gloria Locke in memory of Brother Henry West and by Sister Bonnie Pruitt in memory of Brother Jerry Parma.

"Czech Fest" At Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 Dear Members and Friends: The· officers and committees of Lodge No. 84 at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas extend a great big welcome to all to come to our Annual Czech Fest on Sunday, September 9th. We have planned a fully and wonderful day of activities for all ages. Doors will open at 11 :30 a.m. and dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. It will be catered by Be­ ssie Petr's Catering. Roast beef and gravy, parsley potatoes, green beans, green salad, bread, tea, coffee and des­ sert -- adults, $6 and child 12 and under $3.50. We are asking our mem­ bers to donate pastries for dessert.

We will have many booths, gift and plant, country store, children's booth, pastry table, cake walk and 3 or 4 various games. There will also be drawings for very nice donated prizes at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News On July 29, 1990, John Arno Hi1sher was killed in a one-car accident east of Bellville, enroute to Houston. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Funeral services for John, age 72, were held Wednesday, August 1 at I O a.m. at the Travis Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Robbins officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Houston at 2 p.m. ·with a Military and Masonic burial. The service was closed by Rev. Larry Robbins.

John was born at Roznov, Texas on September 8, 1917, the son of the late Charles and Albina (Halamicek) Hil­ sher. He was married to Talita Lin­ demann in 1939 by Rev. G. C. Brannies, and had three daughters, Betty Gayle, Joyce Marie and Shirley Kay. After Talita died in 1976, he mar­ ried Palmae (Romair) Skrehot on February 4, 1979 in St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Houston by Rev. Jim Shelton.

Pallbearers were Al Marshall, Jim Lyons, Larry Green, David, Allen and Tim Skrehot, John was in the furniture business in Houston for many years=a successful businessman. I, Pearl, worked for him 29 years: he also was my brother-in­ law for 51 years and it was a pleasure.

After he retired from the furniture business, he and Palmae moved to Park, Texas in a beautiful spacious home, however, they lived there only 7 years, when the tragedy occurred.

John was a member of Travis Street United Methodist Church, the VFW Post No. 5254 in La Grange, Texas, American Legion Post in Houston; a 50-year member of Sons of Hermann, also a 50-year member of SPJST, and Reagan Lodge No. 1037 AF&AM in Houston. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Palmae Hilsher of Fayetteville; three daughters, Betty Gayle and Larry Green, Joyce Marie and Jim Lyons and Shirley Kay Knight, all of Houston; one step-daughter, Sue Whorton; 3 step-sons and daughters-in-law, David and Jan Skrehot, Alan and Alda Skrehot and Tim Nelms Skrehot, all of Houston; 4 sisters and brothers-in-law, Elenora and Herbert Lange of La Grange, Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt, Gladys and Warren Havemann of Houston, Ruth and Bob Martinak of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren and eight stepgrandchildren. His 3 brothers, Alfred, Charlie (a twin brother) and Harold preceded him in death. John also had many nieces and nephews who cared very much for Uncle John.

He also had many, many friends who shared their grief with us.

He was a sales representative for the SPJST, and worked for Harris County tax office after his retirement from the furniture business.

After the funeral, a big spread of food was at Lodge 88 for all who cared to eat before going home. A great deal of the food was furnished by the food company that his granddaughter Joyce Lyon who is a director of the food ser­ vices=designee. Also members and friends brought food. We thank everybody and may John rest in peace.

A joyous occasion: Leon and Ora Nell Lange had a beautiful 50th wed­ ding anniversary celebration at Lodge 88 on Sunday, July 29, 1990.

They have two precious daughters, Una Mae Lange Reck and son-in-law, Gregory Reck from Blowing Rock, North Carolina, daughter Terry Lynn Quarels and Paul Quarles from Bill­ ings, Montana.

They also have grandchildren, who I know are important in their lives. Una Mae and Gregory have a daughter, Nicolya Alexander Reck, who will at­ tend Stanford University in California this fall.

Terry Lynn and Paul have a· 6month-old son, Neil Travis Quarles.

Terry's husband was unable to attend and, of course, was missed by the family.

They danced from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. After Pastor Carlson from Zion Lutheran , Church gave the blessing, delicious refreshments and dinner were served to their many friends and rela­ tives.

Leon and Ora Nell, we all wish you many more happy and healthy years.

Tom and Lydia Marsh told me of their beautiful trip to DaRedda, Louisiana on Saturday, August 11, 1990. It was a Marsh reunion. I'm sure they had a nice time visiting with Tom's family.

Donnie Cox, son of Harley and Viola Cox was in a severe accident in which he got his hip fractured, facial lacera­ tions and other injuries. He had surgery on August 14, and we hope and pray for this fine young man and also his family. He was in a car with 2 men and all got critically hurt. It seems they are all lucky to be alive.

They were on the way to a business meeting.

One of our active members, Ernest Anders, who had surgery on both knees is at home now and doing a little better every day, of course, he still has pains, but the theropist encourages him all the time. Ernest was real reluctant about having it done, but, as time went on, he soon realized it was the only thing to do. His wife, Margie, is work­ ing hard to get him well, soon.

Somemore good news! Franklin Bravenec, who has been in the hospital and Rehab Center for 7 weeks, has now been told to go home Friday, August 17, 1990. He must be glad when that day arrives, and so will Al­ meda, who has gone back and forth to the hospital every day.

Tony Vindet is at home now and so is Ed Miculka's brother, Rudy, who has had several by-passes. He's feeling much better. I also was told that Henry Kite and Royal Warnasch have minor troubles. I will not go in to that any further.

I had some unexpected company this Tuesday afternoon, when Elsie Kadera brought her mother, Mrs. Frank Dvorak, by to see me. She also brought somethings to put in the SPJST Museum.

Mrs. Dvorak, an honorary member of the Birthday Club, is 90 years old and is getting along very well. Her children are taking good care of her. To me it was a beautiful visit.

Wednesday, August 29, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/13 On Sunday, August 12, the children of Egon and Marian Tietjen gave their parents a 50th anniversary celebration at La Grange, Texas in the Knights of Columbus Hall. It was a beautiful oc­ cassion. They have 3 daughters and one son; they are Brenda Reinauer of Hereford, Texas; .Jerlyn Schindler of Katy, Texas; Glynis Porter of La Grange, Texas and Daryl from Austin, Texas.

They also have 7 grandchildren; Gus Lindemann, Marian Tietjen's brother furnished the music for the dance. Karl Lindemann, the Lodge 88 board chairman is also her brother. The meal was catered and was very good. Marian and Egon, we wish you many more healthy and happy years.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Haso 't August been a nice month as for as the weather is concerned? It is a cool month most of the time and it's about 100 degrees. With the cool month, it seemed to have kept mem­ bers away from our lodge meeting.

The August 12 meeting wasn't too well attended, however, the business was carried on just as if the hall was full.

Our officers gave their reports. This time our President Albert Kubala had to miss the meeting due to some work for his personal business. He did come in later in time to eat the good meal that was cooked and prepared by Brother Al and Sister Alene Kercho with the help of Mary Ann Krivanek.

As always, it was a delicious meal with plenty of it and lots of pastries our ladies always bring; each time the ladies try to bring a new type of pastry and the pastry always taste so good.

Since the president wasn't present, Vice President John Paprskar took charge and Brother Kenneth Krivanek acted as vice president.

We had some visitors and a new member was voted into our lodge. He was asked to catch the greased "pig" to be installed, but we didn't have the pig so he lucked out on that one; however, the Davenports have been coming to our lodge hall for many years and I thought all along that they were mem­ bers. After talking to them at the recent dance, I asked them to join our lodge and they took out membership right away. Due to their age they took out some annuities. We are glad to have them because they will be good workers in our lodge.

We had a visitor, Ms. Jose Zacek (maiden name and I didn't get her mar­ ried name), who is Joe Zacek's sister from Mansfield, Texas. (To some older members and friends, the name bas been shortened to the American way.

The Czech way is Zacek with a Za­ check sound. Over 70 years, my mother and father used to visit each other often, those being the horse and buggy days and also the Model "T" which took time to get to each other's

house. Being the old-timers and just arriving to the United States, they tried to keep in touch with each other.)

The trustees are still trying to come up with some type of lift to get thé beer kegs out of the basement. This has been studied for some time now, so let's hope it will soon be solved, before our manager breaks his back.

During the last dance was a hat con­ test and I mean there were plenty and all kinds of hats; funny, handmade from different kind of materials, hats made of beer and cold drink cans, lamp shades, hats over 75 years old, which was a sight to see and all of the participants paraded along the dance floor. The winners were: Ladies' class, first place -- Louise Kucera (hat made in a pig shape) Second place -- Jenise Moore (chan­ delier light) Men's class -- Johnny Tesar (hat made of cans) Rudolph Koci (dog hat that would wiggle its ears) · Kids' hats -- Cindy Jones, Laura Tesar and Joseph Tesar had funny hats of some type.

The pictures of all the hats will be in our lodge hall for all of you to see be­ cause due to so many pictures in the Vestnik, it would be some time before you would see them, so look for the pictures at our hall. We thank the editor for the pictures he puts in the Vestnik.

We have had several members who have been sick and in the hospital; namely, Sister Norma (Chaloupka) McClendon who broke her. foot and had surgery, Sister Annie Balota had some tests made, Sister Frances Tirk who had a blood clot and was operated on her neck and she is now in the Woodridge Nursing Home in Grapevine, Texas. Brother Joe Juran had a hip operation and Sister Anna Juran is in a nursing home. To these members and all of our members in the rest homes and at home, we wish you happiness and good health.

Sister Bennie Bartek called me and is doing fairly well but is uneasy getting out and afraid of falling.

Brother C. R. (Dick) Durham's mother passed away a few days ago.

Birthday cards were sent to 15 mem­ bers who have birthdays in August.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to those present, namely, Brother Louis Kubala and Carl W. Zich. All members over 65 years of age and I wish to thank our lodge for the nice cards that were sent to each of us.

Brother Joe Paprskar had a car wreck in Dallas which totaled his car, but he wasn't hurt too badly. We are glad to hear it didn't injure him. Joe came to the meeting with Nancy even though they live in Dallas. They attend about all of our meetings.

We had .several youth members at camp this year and I'm sure they en­ joyed it very much. Tara Kubala was one of the chaperones with the group.

Our next dance is August 26th which will be sponsored by our lodge with music by the Mynarcik Band, which will be in the past when this letter will be printed.

However, Sunday, September 15 is a day you will want to keep in mind which is the Annual Czech Festival Day. There will be a contest of some­ type during the day; lots of good food, hospitality, fun for all ages; fine music by two bands: The Mikula Orchestra and The Harold Strand Orchestra who will keep you entertained playing dance music in the afternoon and eve­ ning.

It's a thousand times better to have common sense without an education than to have an education without common sense.

Lodge members, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, attended the fourth annual "Colorado Polka Days," July 27th through the 29th, in Denver, Colorado. The polkafest was held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds of Denver. Daniel and Mary Ann drove to Colorado for their vacation and, in conjunction with their travels, they stopped for the celebra­ tion. There were 14 bands at the gala, and the sponsor was the Polka Club- of America. They have 200 members and 23 states were represented at the fes­ tivities. Mary Ann and Daniel stated that they met many of the people from the different states as well as several couples from Texas and a few couples from the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Daniel mentioned that he had a num­ ber of recorded tapes of bands from our region playing polkas and waltzes.

He stated that he was able to trade some of his cassettes to other persons who were recording bands from dif­ ferent parts of the country. They said that everyone danced until they were unable to move.

On July 30th, Jeanie Roznov became a new grandmother, again. Her son, Steven and his wife became the proud parents of a 9-pound boy. Parents, grandparents and everyone are doing fine, including the future "linebacker."

One of the problems with having a baby is getting to the hospital on time.

Shelby, Robert and I, normally at­ tend most all the lodge functions if we are able. On the weekend of August 1 lth and 12th, we had planned a trip to visit Robert's brother who lives in Sharpsburg, Maryland. We departed D/FW Airport on Friday, August 1 Oth at 1 p.m. His brother, John, picked us up at Dulles International Airport, Washington; D.C., at approximately 4:30 EST. We had a very enjoyable ride through the Maryland country­ side until we reached his house, just south of Sharpsburg. The region there is marked by rolling hills, green pas­ tures and little country towns and vil­ lages. It is a very extraordinary part of Americana. On Friday, we just went to his house to catch-up on our visiting and to discuss happenings in each other's families. Saturday morning, after a delicious country breakfast fixed by our host, we got ready and headed off to Baltimore, Maryland.

We rode through parts of Baltimore and then we parked at the Inner Harbor section of the city. We immediately took a trip on a harbor cruise boat and had a guided tour of that arm of the Chesapeake Bay. It was so very inter­ esting. It passed Fort McHenry, the sight of the inspiration of our Country's National Anthem. From there, we walked through several buildings comprised of shops and res­ taurants. After a light lunch, we returned to the car and took a tour of the "Little Italy" section of Baltimore.

From there, we returned to John's house and freshened-up to go out.

Saturday evening, we traveled to a quaint little town called New Market, Maryland. It is known as the antique capitol of the East Coast. There are an­ tique shops lined up on the main street and it became hard to count all of them. This didn't take into considera­ tion the side streets which must have held many more shops. We stopped at an historical Inn and had some of the most terrific seafood that we have ever had. From there, we visited with some of John's relatives and then got to bed late that evening.

Wednesday, August 29, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/15 One doctor got a phone can and a man's voice said: "Doc, she's due any minute now I" The doctor asked: "Is

this her first baby?" The voice said: "No, this is. her husband!"

Buddy Hrabal and Memory Lane played to a very nice crowd of 140 in­ dividuals on the evening of August 4th. A large number of the people at­ tending were there to help Ed and Dorothy Kral celebrate their 40th wed­ ding anniversary. The happy couple were joined by many of their relatives including children, grandchildren, si­ blings, in-laws, etc., as well as many well wishers and friends from their as­ sociaties at Lodge 183. Friends from other lodges were also in attendance.

Ed and Dorothy were honored with a pre-dance anniversary dinner. As soon as the dinner was complete, the dance began and the couple started the affair.

Later in the evening, a large number of folks got on the floor and cheered the couple on, while they performed the Anniversary dance, ringed by the many participants. Everyone present toasted Ed and Dorothy and danced well into the night until closing time.

From all of us at Lodge 183, Ar­ lington, we wish Ed and Dorothy, a very happy anniversary and many more to come. .

On Monday evening, August 6th, the officers of Lodge 183 met to discuss important matters involving the lodge and its activities. Six officers were present to discuss future items, past problems, and the agenda to be presented to the regular monthly meet­ ing. The meeting began at 7 p.m. and lasted slightly over an hour.

The following Sunday, August 12th, saw the regular monthly meeting of Lodge 183. Several members were there and a few pieces of legislation were enacted that will affect the lodge in the near future. A committee was selected to nominate an individual for "Fraternalíst of the Year" for our lodge. Old business and new business were discussed and disposed of during the meeting. Due to numerous mem­ bers being on vacation and some on weekend trips, our small family night held August 10th was sparsely at­ tended. Only 3 individuals showed and they decided to forego the evening. At our monthly meeting, a motion was raised and approved to cancel any fur­ ther secondary family nights. Your FAC does not understand why this par­ ticular action was promulgated as this night was totally optional. The summer months naturally have people traveling and many activities will be lightly at­ tended until the school term begins.

Fortunately, we will still have our primary Family Social Night which is held on the last Friday evening of every month. Later, the meeting was adjourned.

Another dance was held at Lodge 183 on Saturday evening, August 18th.

The group playing was the Czech Har­ vesters. This dance was tended by a small crowd. The music was primarily polkas and waltzes and the band had a commendable performance. The folks who attended, appeared to enjoy them­ selves.

Please be sure to attend the remain­ ing Family Social Night which is com­ ing up this Friday night, August 31st.

It starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. Be sure to bring a covered dish and plan to visit and play games. Let 's keep these well attended so that we can continue to meet and enjoy each other's company. Remember, the last Friday night of each month. See you then.

Robert's brother lives adjacent to the great battlefield of the Civil War called Antietam (or Sharpsburg). On Sunday morning, he prepared another exceptional breakfast of biscuits and

gravy and then took us to the scene of the battle which is preserved for history's sake. It has a visitor's center that has a short film depicting the bat­ tle and they issue brochures explaining walking, bicycling or motor car trips through' the area. We rode by auto through the region and visited many monuments to heroes of the battle on both sides.

John Sill has been a member of the SPJST Society since the year that he was born, some 46 years ago. He is presently a member of Lodge No. 183 in Arlington, Texas. He owns a beauti­ ful home in the Maryland countryside, among the hills and tall trees. He works full time as a plumbing contrac­ tor supervisor. He loves the area in which he lives and he attends many of the activities and country fairs held in the Maryland/Virginia area during the year. He produces his own wine, among them apple, cranberry and other unusual types of "grape of the vine."

He bakes his own bread and enjoys spending time with his three dogs and one cat. He maintains several hobbies and he especially likes to delve into historical sights and their back­ grounds. John writes letters often lo his parents in Dallas and his two brothers; the older brother living in New Jersey. Robert and I plan to return to visit John, again, in the middle of Septem­ ber, for further memorializations of the anniversary of the strife.

This is the first Satur­ day night in September, so if you have any celebration on the horizon, be sure to come and join in on the fun and the members and friends there, will help you celebrate. A family returned from Sunday morning service, when the father began complaining and criticized the sermon. The daughter thought the choir's singing was off-key and the mother found fault with the organist's playing. Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club News The August 7, 1990 Lodge 88 Birthday Club met for their regular monthly meeting in the lodge dining room. We had a small crowd in atten­ dance, which is easy to understand be­ cause the temperature was hovering around 100 degrees. We had an inter­ esting meeting ..

President Kathy Trefoil read a poem entitled "What is a Grandma?" The roll was called, and Kathy also introduced Eileen Shelander, Lillie Spies' niece.

She asked to become a member of our club; all of us were glad to have her.

She was welcomed and graciously ac­ cepted.

One of our sisters, Alma McNaspy, had both feet operated on. She ' s doing just fine, only being incapacitated is hard on an active person.

After we couldn't get anyone to cook in September, Marie Pokluda made a motion, seconded by Inez Jeanes to have a covered dish. It seems the food is very good and our visitors really enjoy it. The motion passed unani­ mously.

Those who offered to bake a cake for the first Wednesday, September 5 are Mary Kosut, Martha Baxter, Willie Mae Ermis (I hope a red velvet), Mary Johnson and Evelyn Mikulas. The second week, September 12, the fol­ lowing will bring cakes: Gladys Pul­ ley, Virginia Hale, Rita Alexander, Ardith McClellan, Helen Hegwood and Lillie Spies.

Friendship Club (Fort Worth) Dear Members and Friends: Jo Prochaska, our president, called our meeting to order and welcomed our 28 members, guest, Jewell Clark and our travelers from their European trip.

She led us to the pledge to our flag and all remained standing for a mo­ ment of silence in honor of Martha Moon's husband. who passed away.

Billye Starr reported hostesses for October, namely, Anna Johnson, Annie Whitsill and Lydia Alholm. · It was voted for our September 5th meeting, we are to meet at the River Oaks Blvd. at 11 a.m. Anyone needed transportation call., and arrangements will be made. After lunch we will return to the club for games and fel­ lowship.

Lydia Alholm gave us a report on her mother who had surgery at age 90 and is in the Woodridge Nursing Center, 1500 Autumn Drive, Grapevine, Texas 76051, if anyone would like to send her a card. We are happy to hear she is doing well.

Jeanie Mason gave us the highlight of their trip to Europe. Merel Kovar will report on their trip when she gets her photos. Maria Prill and Eva Dock­ ery left for a 3-week visit to Germany with their relatives and friends.

Roy Alholm's cousin, Hannu Viitala from Finland was a visitor in the home of Roy and Lydia Alholm. Hannu had a 45-day pass on the Amtrak, so he traveled from the east coast to the west coast, and the states in between, before returning to Finland.

On Wednesday. November 7, we will have our family Thanksgiving gather­ ing. (Details later.) I can't believe we're already talking Thanksgiving.

HOW DO I ENTER?? -Send us the name(s) of people you would like to see join the SPJST by completing the coupon below and mailing it to · our Insurance Department. If you would like to recommend several people, attach a separate sheet and mail to us. ONLY LIFE INSURANCE SALES ON NEW MEMBERS WILL COUNT FOR THIS CONTEST. After we receive your recommendation, we will register it and forward it to a sales representative for contact. All referrals must be registered through the Home Office to count towards the contest.
