Everyone's most precious asset. The hours of day are life itself. Time is the most precious asset anyone has. Think that over carefully. Is your life worth enough to you to make sound planning worthwhile? For any honest man, the answer is the question itself. The darkest hour in a man's life is when he sits down to plan how to make a living without earning it. Is there a man living who can maintain honestly that he is entitled to success if he is unwill­ ing to earn it? That answer, too, is in each man's own heart. If a man's ob­ ject in life is to work just enough to get by, he will have to be satisfied with a half-loaf, wizened, dishearten­ ing existence, one that holds no future and bears the earmark of despair.

*** As a life underwriter, you work with imperishable materials. The song and the story, the rhythm and the ebb of life is in all you do 'and underneath the clauses of the contracts you write is the singing heart of financial safety, financial contentment, financial happi­ ness.

Into your hands is placed the destiny and the future fate of men, women and children. All the..manhood within you cries out to give all you possess, all of your capacity, to serve them well. In doing so, you build a monument far greater than any dotting the whole earth in memory of all the statesmen who have ever breathed. Your future is vast and glorious as you have the vision to plan.

The world is yearning for men and women who lose themselves in their appointed tasks. Faith in your capacity to meet all tests, to overcome all obstacles is now our solemn obliga­ tion. Wear the mantle of life under­ writer with the dignity it imposes.

Make every man and woman with whom you come in contact recognize as one worth knowing, one who knows what he wants from life. Then you will be rewarded with a rich measure of success, regardless of passing problems. The key to greater service is in your hands! Will you tum it?

*** This is the time of year when the lure of the outdoors results in picnics, vacations, fishing trips, swimming and lawn parties. To get away from the daily routine and to get some rest and relaxation is what we endeavor to do.

During this time of the year many SPJST lodges, are noted for the ab­ sence of many of their members from regular monthly meetings, for it is easy to succumb to the temptation of being out of doors, especially to those who have to work indoors.

The "insiders," so to , speak, are ready, when the weekly grind is over, to relax and do something for the benefit of their health and refresh their spirit. That brings to our minds, as fraternalists, what to do to bring about more interest, to the end that the meet­ ings of the lodge may show better at­ tendance. This, of course, is a great question; however, your editor

believes that measures can be taken to help the situation.

It is believed that only a small per­ centage of the members stay away be­ cause a lodge may not have a social or some type of special program. Some stay away because it' s too hot; some stay glued to a TV; some might miss their domino games or there could be an illness in the family. A few may feel that their only interest lies in the insurance upon which they pay their dues. However, the majority of the ab­ sentees, it is believed, feel that they have no interest in the proceedings, due to not having been endowed with the trait of aggressiveness to voice their opinions in discussing the busi­ ness of a meeting.

This majority can be encouraged to take lively interest in their lodge by having them feel that the lodge has in­ terest in them, individually rich or poor. After all, the lodge is a fraternal order, and although selfishness is sometimes detected, our leaders, the more aggressive men and women, believe in humanity's sake ...many of them going out of their way to do a kindly deed for a lodge member or do something for the good of the lodge as a whole.

Actually, we can have more such men and women if we can help them see that it is within the power of al­ most anyone to develop a more aggres­ sive attitude if they would only try.

This could be accomplished, it is believed showing joint interest or feeling by appointing or electing a member or members to once-a-year jobs; call upon all members .of the lodge inquiring as to their welfare and why they haven't been present at pre­ vious meetings.

Bringing the fact right to their homes that they are wanted, yours truly believes, will cause our meetings to show a marked increase in attendance.

You may think about this and try these methods, in your local lodge. This is food for thought for all local lodge of­ ficers.

*** The Environmental Protection Agency has long feared that vapors from latex house paints that contain mercury can cause kidney damage and such nerve problems as tremors and short-term memory loss, especially in children. Now, the EPA has ruled that

by August 20 makers of interior paints must stop using mercury, added to kill bacteria that thin the paint and turn it rancid. About 30 percent of the inte­ rior paints contain the toxic metal.

Mercury will still be allowed in ex­ terior paints, because outdoors the vapors dissipate quickly. Indoor paints emit vapors for years.

Since mercury does not have to be listed as an ingredient on paint cans, anyone buying paint before August 20 should call the manufacturer or the Na­ tional Pesticide Telecommunication Network, (800) 858- 7378, to find out whether a brand contains it. The EPA says that paints with 200 parts per mil­ lion or less pose Uttle risk.

*** Tax Counseling for tile Elderly, an Internal Revenue Service program, is accepting requests for tax training through August 15 from non-profit groups like churches whose members would like to help the elderly with their tax returns next year. Tax coun­ selors don't have to have prior tax­ preparation experience; the IRS sends out trainers and also pays for volunteers' expenses such as parking, gas and tolls. Call (202) 566-6603.

Lodge No. 29, Taylor Second Annual Tarok Tournament SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor will have a Torale Tournament on Septem­ ber 29, 1990. The same rules and play format as was used at the State Tarok SPJST Tarok Tournament will be used.

We, especially want to invite SPJST members, however, the tournament is open to the public so bring your friends.

Registration fee is $10 and we ask that you please register by September 15 in order to help us in preparing enough food and snacks. Registration is limited to the first l 00 players.

Registration covers entry fee, prizes, coffee, snacks and noon meal. Soda water and beer will be available, but have to be purchased. When you send in your registration fee. please include a note requesting a set of rules and/or directions to Lodge No. 29 if you need them. I will gladly mail the informa­ tion you need.

We will change our prizes this year in order to have the prize money spread out. We will. as last year. use $4 of each registration towards prizes.

Prizes will be for first through fourth places and a prize for highest score for each round.

We plan to play 6 rounds with all players and then take the top 4 players and play the final round. Players will carry chip totals throughout the entire tournament.

We will begin sign-in on the morning of the tournamenr at 8:30. with coffee and snacks for all players. At the time of sign-in, each player will draw a number to determine which table you will begin play: hopefully, everyone will be signed in by 9:30 a.m. and start playing.

We will hold playing until I O a.m. if some of those who are registered are not present: anyone arriving later than 10 a.m. may enter. but will have a shortened round to coincide with the end of play at other tables.

Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday. June 16, 1990 at 9:45 p.m. following the social games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer observed for our departed mem­ bers. especially Edgar T. Hundl, who passed away since our last meeting.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers. All officers were present. except Donna Munoz, assis­ tant youth leader.

Correspondence were received and read which consisted of a thank you note from Larry Hensley. Termina­ tion/Lapses Report for June and letter from Supreme Lodge regarding "Fraternalist of the Year."

Members heard reports from officers and committees.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek gave the financial reports. A complete copy of reports are on file subject to audit.

A motion by Frankie Vanek, seconded by Mary Ann Karasek to ac­ cept David Wendt as a new member.

The motion carried.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reminded members of the District VI YAD to be held Sunday, July 29th, with Taiton Lodge No. 30 hosting.

Lodge No. 49, Rowena Hosted State Tarok Tournament The State Tarok Tournament was held in Rowena SPJST Lodge Hall on June 23rd.

Forty avid players from Taylor, Granger, Temple, Buckholts, Fort Worth, Midland, Ballinger, Eola, West, Roscoe and other vicinities par­ ticipated in this all day contest of skill.

Joe Havlak and Fred Havlak of Route 1, Rowena. organized and planned the tournament held at the lodge building in Rowena.

Occasional rest breaks were wel­ comed with plenty of coffee and kolaches. .

The noon meal was prepared and served by the host lodge ladies, name­ ly: Lula Maracek, Pauline Shiller, Elizabeth Walther, Elizabeth Urbanek, Eddie Mae Huebner, Dorine Schroeder and Emma Havlak.

Elizabeth Urbanek, Lula Maracek and Elizabeth Walther baked the roast beef. The vegetables, salads, pies and cakes were brought and prepared by them and the other ladies.

Lodge No. 66, Waco Meeting Dear Members: The meeting was called to order by President Mary Alice Langlotz at 2:30 p.m.

Flags were presented by Nicole Pruitt and Sandra Trickett. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Justin En­ gelke and all remained standing to ob­ serve a moment of silence for our departed member, Brother Henry F. West. We extend our sympathy to the family.

All officers were present.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt.

After one correction, the minutes were accepted as given.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting were read and approved.

The Entertainment Committee reported that for the August meeting,

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported there were 8 members and 6 adults present at the youth meeting. They will go to camp July 22nd. On September 15, they will clean their highway project and plant flower seeds.

Lodge No. 66 made a donation of $300 to the W.E. Harcow family who lost their home and all belongings in a fire.

Sister Emma Ceska, bookkeeper, gave her quarterly report.

Brother Ira Niswanger was voted in as a new member on the board of trus­ tees.

New members are Tiffany Lynn Craft, Lindsey Marie Janek, Daniel Andrew Williams, Tyler Wayne Whiteside, Earlene Messer, Bridgett Lee Bussell and Haley Jo Sebik.

Lodge No. 107, Floresville Meeting Wilson County has been relieved of its drought situation for the time being.

Rains fell in the amounts of 5 to 7 in­ ches generally although some spots did receive more and some flooding of low lands did occur. However, all in all, it was very beneficial to most farmers and ranchers, except that they came too late for the grain crops.

Lodge 107 held its regular meeting on July 8th; small attendance, again, especially for the youth club. More parents of children who have policies or who are interested need to bring the children out so they can enjoy some of the benefits offered to the youth by SPJST. During the business session, Wendy Pruski reported for her husband, Glen (FAC) who will no longer be able to be our local FAC. At this time Erich (Trey) Bielefeld was elected and will now serve as our fraternal activities coordinator.

Our Fall Family Fun-Day will again be hosted by Floresville so Trey will be in charge of activities and contests.

The event is scheduled for October 21st. More details will follow as the FAC gets responses from other lodges on the number of entries that will be participating.

Nice progress is reported on remodeling the barbecue building and the construction of the portable Peanut Festival booth.

Skating, dominoes and other games were enjoyed before and after our meeting.

Next meeting is scheduled for August 12, skating at 1 :30 p.m., youth club at 2:30 p.m., games at 3 p.m. and adult meeting .at 4:30 p.m. ·--------

Viola M. Kurtz Sister Viola M. Kurtz has been a member for 44 years and has served as financial secretary-treasurer for 22 years. She also has served as chairper­ son of several committees and is a sales representative.

She was a delegate in 1976 and 1988 SPJST Con­ ventions. She is a member of the San Antonio Czech Singers and visits nurs­ ing homes with her husband, Charlie.

She sings the Czech songs while Char­ lie plays the accordian. Sister Viola was "Fratemalist of the Year in 1989" at Lodge No. 133.

EnůlMatula Brother Emil Matula has been a very active member and has held offices of secretary, vice president and president of Lodge No. 133 for several years.

Brother Emil was Convention Commit­ tee Chairman in 1980 when the SPJST Convention was held in San Antonio and was a delegate in 1984 when the SPJST Convention was held in Corpus Christi. He also served on the SPJST Publication Committee for several years. Brother Emil is very active in the KIT, community organizations and church activities.

Dominic Netek Brother Dominic Netek is also a very active member in Lodge No. 133. He was lodge secretary, served as reporter for 13 years, co-chairman of the 1980 SPJST Convention in San Antonio, delegate to the SPJST Convention held in Corpus Christi. Brother Netek has served on several lodge committees and is involved in Czech organiza­ tions, KJT, Disabled Veterans and several other fraternal organizations.

Brother Dominic is serving on the SPJST By-Law Committee. Brother Dominic heads the San Antonio Czech Singers and the group sings at various social activities and nursing homes.

Brother Netek was selected "Frater­ nalist of the Year in 1987" of Lodge No.133.

William J. Mares Brother William J. Mares held the offices of vice president and president of Lodge No. 133 for several years. He was a delegate to the SPJST Conven­ tion in 1970. Brother Mares is a mem­ ber of KIT, Hermann Sons, and other social and church organizations. He has given much of his time in caring for the elderly who need assistance; such as visits to the doctor, shopping and other business. All of us have filled out a form while filling in the blanks. English invented by the human race (which is not a race at all). A race is a competition where people or things compete to see who or what is the fastest or best; it's also a metal object where ball bearings roll on to keep our machinery running smoothly. That's why when the stars are out, they are visible but when lights are out, they are invisible.

With all of the words in the English language, we can describe things to great details, but the Germans can describe a fest and having a great time with music, dancing, having a few drinks, laughter, fun time and every­ thing that goes with a great day in just one word: "Gumiclicbkeit."

Defensive Driving Course At Lodge 88, Houston Inasmuch as the Texas legislature has discontinued the AARP Defensive Driving Course in the state your Fraternal Activities Coordinator fur­ nishes the following for your informa­ tion.

This course is conducted by North Harris County College on Kingwood Drive just three miles north of Hous­ ton. The fee is $14 per student 55 years or older; $25 for those younger than 55.

The course consists of two each 4 hour sessions from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the east campus.

Toregister call 359-1600.

Houston Community College also teaches the defensive driving course and the fee is $20 per student.

The course is conducted at a number of high school locations and the schedule varies.

Texas Historical Commission I attended the July 12 meeting of the Texas Historical Commission in Aus­ tin. This meeting was held to deter­ mine the need for a historic cemetery coordinator on the Texas Historical Commission staff.

Marie Neuman Gottfried of Brook­ shire, a member of the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society was also in at­ tendance. We were among the 21 speakers who addressed the commis­ sion.

I represented the Shillerville Cemetery Association as their presi­ dent, the Prairie Hill Cemetery in Travis County as a friend and the Vic­ toria County Czech Heritage Society as a member.

The horror stories we heard made us feel that there are a lot of weird people out there.

Before the meeting was over the ap­ proximately 40 people in attendance were told to write their state legislators and ask them to approve funding for a historic cemetery coordinator on the THC staff. This coordinator would be able to tell people who to contact for certain problems and, if a lawyer

would be needed, they also would tell a person who to contact.

If you are interested in historic cemeteries or any cemetery, please write to your legislator.

News From The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society honored Leona Matl with a covered dish supper recently, at the Victoria County Electric Auditorium, prior to a regular meeting. Miss Matl graduated as Valedictorian of Stroman High School and will enter the Univer­ sity of Texas majoring in Psychiatry.

She was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States at the age of 8 years. She gave a short resume of her life and was presented a gift from the society.

President Marjorie Matula intro­ duced the guests present, namely, Mrs. Alena Matl (mother of the honoree), State CHS President Jerry and Delores Prochazka of Crosby, Mr. and Mrs. John Janacek (editors of Dewitt Coun­ ty View), Bob Christianson of Pala­ cious and Thaddeus Polasek of Moravia community.

Reports were given by Doris Obsta and Olivia Milberger on their recent Genealogy Research Book, "Checking Your Czech Ancestors, which they compiled and now may be purchased from them.

Research material in the amount of $250 was recently donated to the Vic­ toria Public Library genealogy room.

Tom Kurtz, Sr., asked if anyone desiring a scholarship from the VCCHS to further their Czech lan­ guage course, may contact him for more information.

State President Jerry Prochazka gave an interesting talk on the organization and announced that the next State meeting will be held in San Antonio in November.

A Czech Cultural and Educational Program was presented by Marjorie Matula and Geraldine Venglar dressed in their Czech costumes to over 140 students, teachers and parents at Wm. A. Wood Elementary School Gym recently. They showed the students how poppyseed is ground for baking kolaches and how homemade noodles are made. They talked briefly on the Czech Immigration to Texas and on the early life of the Czechs to the present time.

Felix and Marie Drost made some in­ teresting comments on the visitors from Czechoslovakia, whom they hosted in their home, recently. Further plans were discussed on the VCCHS Festival to be held at the Victoria Community Center on October 21, 1990. A State Tarok Tournament will also be held. Festival chairman is Joe Janak, Jr. and co-chairman is Franklin Elles.

Several society members had a dis. play of their family history books they compiled and published on their families to encourage other members to have their histories put into print.

Many new attractions will be provided this year, such as the Youth Beseda Dancers of SPJST Lodge Taiton, Victoria College Concert Band, Czech Artifacts, Czech Museum, Exhibit of Czech Dolls, Slide Presentation of Czechoslovakian 11

Countryside, Children's Face Painting, Czech Sing-a-Long for all and Czech accordian music throughout the day.

Other attractions during the day will be demonstrations on making homemade items, such as soap, butter and sour dough, Czech decorated eggs, Czech wedding customs and tradition demonstrations, dance exhibi­ tion and handcrafts, Czech folklore and stories; also cake walk, country store and various booths.

A Czech lunch will be served along with homemade chicken noodle soup, kolaches and other food.

The society now has 133 members.

Members received their 'society's newsletter at the meeting from the president.

Following the meeting, the members joined together in a Czech sing-a-long with John Novak of Port Lavaca on the accordian.

The next regular meeting will be held on September 20th.

From The District Youth Counselors Dime Box Lodge No. 13 To Host District I YAD District I will be holding their annual YAD on August 5, 1990. This event will be hosted by Lodge No. 13, Dime Box. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and last until 11 :30 a.m.

A light lunch will be served begin­ ning at 11 a.m. The· buffet will include sandwiches, chips, drinks and a des­ sert. The price of the meal will be $3 for all plates.

The program will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a call to order. Competition will begin shortly thereafter.

Individual and group talent will be followed by a 30-minute break. Royal­ ty competition will then follow.

I feel we will be finished with com­ petition and crowning of our 1990 Royalty day of entertainment.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you at our YAD. It will prove to be a day of fun and excitement not only for the participants but for all in atten­ dance.

District V Youth Club Officers Met

Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, We had a District V officers' meet­ ing on Tuesday, July 10, 1990. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Tommie Wallace.

The LITs were also present to make name tags for camp; camp is July 16 through· 19. Everyone is to meet at Lodge 88 at 8:30 a.m.; the bus will leave at 9 a.m. We ask that everybody be on time to leave. We will stop for lunch on the way to camp. We will eat dinner at camp and we will see our friends from District VII at camp.

Then, we talked about Family Day for October 13. The youth are going to have a booth and everyone needs to sign up to work that day with one of the District V officers. We all need to work, don't leave it to the officers!

Our next officers' meeting will be August 1, 1990 at 6:30 p.m. at Lodge 88. Everyone was asked at the meeting for their input. The meeting went well and the LITs got all of the name tags done.

Dear Readers, The July 15, 1990 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 2: 15 p.m. by President Carl Macek.

Jeffrey Posivar led the Pledge of Al­ legiance to the flag.

The roll was then read. Present were eight members, Jeffrey and Jennifer Ashcraft, Danny Baker, Carl, David and Mark Macek, Jeffrey Posivar and Melanie Zavodny; and one adult, Shir­ ley Ashcraft.

The minutes were read and approved.

Jennifer Ashcraft gave the treasurer's report and the balance was $237.55.

Members attending camp this year are Rodney and Jeffrey Posivar, Jef­ frey and Jennifer Ashcraft, Danny and Tammy Baker, and David and Mark Macek. They will attend junior camp which begins July 25th.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:35 p.m.

The adult lodge voted on a new youth leader. Shirley Ashcraft will serve as our leader for the remainder of the year; Barbara Macek will help.

Melanie Zavodny was crowned the 1990-91 District II Queen at the Dis­ trict II YAD on July 8, 1990, at Round Rock Lodge No. 187. Her duchess is Jennifer Ashcraft. They were both ac­ knowledged in the adult meeting..

Dime Box Youth Lodge 13 July Monthly Meeting The Dime Box SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting on Wed­ nesday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. Vice President Darden Hervey called the meeting to order. There were 18 mem­ bers present.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Ford, dis­ cussed what to bring to camp and answered any questions the members had about camp. Fourteen from our lodge are attending camp this year at Val Verde from July 19 until July 22.

Everyone turned in their YAD forms.

Our lodge will host District I YAD on August 5. Everyone is asked to meet at the hall at 4 p.m. on August 4 to help get everything ·set up for YAD. Everyone was also asked to bring a dessert to be served at the noon meal atYAD. We also turned in our permission slips to go to Schlitterbaun on August 11. The chartered bus will pick us up at Boyd's at 8:30 a.m. Everyone should bring a sack lunch.

Door prizes were won by Lamanda Kostelka, Aaron Hervey and Keri Rife.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone was treated to a soda water.

Ennis Lodge 25 Youth Club Planned Outing Dear Readers, · Our last meeting was held on July 11, 1990.

We are going to clean the hall to go to Six Flags on July 27 and go to Wetn-Wild on August 4th.

Donna also asked the members if they would like to participate in the Bell County Fraternal Fest. Donna ex­ plained that this would mean making items to sell at a booth at the fraternal fest. Members voted to do this.

Donna then announced the winners from the entries at YAD. Members were reminded that the next youth club meeting would be on August 12 at 5 p.m.

A covered dish meal was enjoyed by the adult and youth club members before the meeting.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels Youth Attend Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, We had a swimming party on June 6 at the Preiss Heights Park. We tubed and later had watermelon for refresh­ ments. The next meeting was set for July 5 at 7:30 p.m, at Bavarian Vil­ lage.

On July 5, we had a business meeting and elected officers. We talked about our projects for YAD to be held in Corpus Christi on July 29th. We also talked about what we needed to bring to Camp Val Verde during the week of July 16 through 19th. Everyone in the club will be going to camp.

On July 9, we had a picnic and meeting with the adults of our lodge. We went swimming and played volleyball.

Mrs. Reese and her family were with us and so were Mrs. Maxine Pavliska and her husband. Everyone really had a good time.

Youth members decided to do a skit for the adopted grandparents at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home as well as for their own grandparents. Grandparents Day is September 9th. It was decided to do the skit on September 8th.

Bonton Mnoho pověstí a fám se točí okolo nové čs. firmy Bonton, která jako spotřební družstvo fungovala už od května 1989 a nyní se stává vážným konkurentem zavedeným gramofonovým a filmovým firmám. O jakou společnost se vlastně jedná a jakou činností se zabývá, to byla otázka, se kterou jsem se obrátil na jednoho ze zakladatelů Bontonu, známého hudebníka Martina Kratochvíla.

"Začátky Bontonu? Já se asi dvacet let znám s režisérem krátkých filmů Rudolfem Dórlem (Dorl). Udělali jsem za ta léta spolu spoustu věcí. On točil filmy a já k nim skládal muziku. V polovině sedmdesátých let jsem si po návratu z USA začal zařizovat vlastní nahrávací studio a teď se zdá, že jsme technicky vybaveni celkem dobře. Proč to povídám? V těch starých časech jsem snili o tom, že jednou nebudeme dělat všechny tyto věci - natáčení, muziku, střih, postprodukci atd. pro někoho jiného, ale zkusíme to sami. A tak vzniklo studio Budíkov, což je mo­ je soukromá firma, zatímco Bonton je akciová společnost, která má asi dvanáct členů. Obě firmy jsou v úzkém kontaktu. Ještě máme třetího partnera - firmu SSV Repro ze Stuttgartu, která má na starosti polygrafii."

Právě v Horní Plané, v malém domku, kde je dnes umístěn jeho památník, se v roce 1805 Adalbert Stifter narodil. Tehdy smíše­ né německo-české prostředí a především zdejší podivuhodně krásná, panenská a do­ dnes civilizací nepříliš dotčená příroda po­ znamenaly celé jeho literární dílo. Rodný kraj se stal pro Stiftera základním inspirač­ ním zdrojem jeho próz a dlužno podo­ tknout, že nad jeho knihy neznáme vrouc­ nější spisovatelské vyznání Šumavě a jejím půvabům. Jen se začtěme do řádek Stifte­ rova Hvozdu: . .Kéž by se nám podařilo podati jen tisíci­ nu zádumčivě krásného obrazu tohoto les­ ního údolí, jak jej nosíme v mysli od té do­ by, kdy nám bylo popřáno tamtudy putovati a prosníti část onoho dvojitého snu, který nebe poskytne každému člověku obyčejně současně a jednou v životě, sen mládí a první lásky."

Ano, Adalberta Stiftera poutaly k rodné­ mu kraji nejen roky hravého, byť chudého dětství, ale také vášnivá a nešťastná první láska k .dceřl frymburského obchodníka Fanny Greiplové. Tam, kde se dnes rozlévají vody Lipenského jezera, chodival mladý Adalbert lukami z Horní Plané do Frymbur­ ka na dostaveníčka s půvabnou černookou Fanny. Leč nemajetný student, váhajíci me­ zi studiem práv a uměleckými zájmy o lite­ raturu a malířství, nebyl pro dobře vychova­ nou měšťanskou dcerku tou správnou partii podle představ zámožných rodičů. A tak došlo k vynucenému rozchodu obou milen­ ců. Fanny se později provdala za komorního sekretáře Fleischhandela a za tři roky po svatbě zemřela při porodu. Zůstala však věčně živá ve Stifterově díle, například v podobě Markétky v knize Z kroniky naše­ ho rodu.

Adalbert Stifter vstoupil nejen do litera­ tury okouzlujícimi popisy přirody a huma­ nistickým poselstvím o nelehkých osudech prostých lidí, blízkým například dílu Boženy Němcové, jehož si ostatně sám velíce po­ važoval. Nesmírně záslužná byla i jeho čin­ nost pedagogická jako zemského školního inspektora v Linci; Ve své práci programově navazoval na myšlenky Komenského a Rousseaua a prosazoval pokrokové refor­ my nižšího školství. Průkopnicky se zabýval také péčí o památkové dědictví. Jeho odkaz je prodchnut ryzím ušlechtilým člověčen­ stvím křesťanskou láskou k bližnímu a k pří­ rodě, které stavěl proti vzmáhajícímu se dravému kapitalismu a nacionálním vášním.

Náš vlastní dluh vůči tomuto opětovateli Šumavy jsme začali splácet až v roce 1960, kdy byla z iniciativy dr. Huga Rokyty v jeho rodném domku v Horní Plané otevřena ex­ pozice seznamující návštěvníky ze Stiftero­ vým životem a dílem. Každoročně v létě směřuji sem na břeh Lipenského jezera tisí­ ce turistů a rekreantů. Nemálo z nich zavítá i do Památníku Adalberta Stiftera, který je dnes ve správě Okresního vlastivědného muzea v Českém Krumlově. Plná třetina z těch ročně zhruba oeti a půl tisíce ná­ vštěvníků malého, pietně udržovaného domku s šindelovou střechou, kde se spiso­ vatel narodil, přijíždí z Rakouska a Němec­ ké spolkové republiky. Přijíždí uctit svého básníka, který celý svů] život, třebaže psal německy, chtěl být také náš - ceský.

Jeden z největších rakouských spisovate­ lů minulého století Adalbert Stifter má tři sochy. Jedna stojí ve Vídni, jedna v Linci a jedna v malém šumavském městečku na jihu Čech, v Horní Plané. Český básník Ladi­ slav Stehlík ji ve své Zemi zamyšlené po­ psal velice přesně _a sugestivně:

Stihl však na­ psat jen román Vítek, vydaný tři roky před autorovou tragick'ou smrti a věnovaný hlav­ nímu městu království Praze. Jeho gesto se v tehdejší české vlastenecké společnosti nesetkalo s žádoucí odezvou. Podaná ruka spisovatele upřímně milujíciho tuto zem a vážlciho si českých dějin a literatury ne­ byla opětována, respektive byla opětována až mnohem později. A tak i patnáctimetro­ vý žulový obelisk, čnějíci od roku 1877 na skále nad Plešným jezerem, místě mnohých básníkových zadumání, je dílem němec­ kých obdivovatelů jeho díla.

Československo­ Portugalské kulturní styky

Matematik sedí u okna ve vlaku a každou chvíli vyvolává, "644 - 348 -384." Naproti sedí cestujícího a ptá se, "Pořád vyslovujete za.cifry. Co to počítáte?"

"No, počítám a popisuji si kolik oveček máme ve staré vlasti."

"Jak je to možné když vlak tak rychle jede? Jak jste to poznal?"

"Docela jednoduše," odpovídá matematik, "spočítám nohy a dělím čtyřmi."

Československo má zájem na výměně kulturních hodnot se všemi zeměmi světa. Platí to také o Por­ tugalsku, které je pro ČSSR vzdálenější evropskou zemí. Vzájemné kulturní styky nejsou vzhledem k větší geografické vzdálenosti příliš intenzivní a většina akcí se uskutečňuje prostřednictvím uměleckých agentur.

Významnou kulturní akcí minulého roku bylo hostování souboru

Ústředního loutkového divadla Praha v hlavním městě Portugalska.

Představení pro děti s názvem Čarovné housle se uskutečnilo v rámci Festivalu československého loutkářství a doplnila jej i čs. loutkářská výstava.

Rozvoj kulturních styků byl zaz­ namenán i v oblasti výtvarné a literární: o spolupráci v této sféře pro­ jevilo zájem portugalské sdružení pro umění a literaturu ARTIE, jehož · představitelé navštívili v únoru 1988 Československo u příležitosti zahájení výstavy Současné portugalské umění.

Kolekce výtvarných děl představila

současné portugalské výtvarníky, kteří v Československu nejsou známi a těšila se tedy i zasloužené pozornosti.

Přínosem byly i Dny československé kultury, které se konaly v první polovině května 1988. V Lisabonu i v dalších městech vystoupily při této příležitosti přední čs. umělecké soubory, například Sukův komorní or-. chestr. V rámci kulturní přehlídky vystoupil i světoznámý soubor Černého divadla Jiřího Srnce (Jiří Srnec) s představením Týden snů, které znají diváci v různých evropských zemích i v zámoří.

Cultural Entertainment One particularly attractive area of Westfest is the cultural tent. Sokol gymnastics is also presented in this area.

Performances are held under a large tent near the entrance of the festival. There is plenty of seating so that you may rest your feet as you view the colorful and entertaining culture of the world.
