Your editor hopes many of our readers and members have read: Czech Cultural Program Deserves Public's Support (an editorial) and Texas Czechs Endow UT Faculty Position (by Kirby Moss), both articles from the Austin-American Statesman printed on page 10 of the July 18, 1990 SPJST Vestnik issue. It is of interest in column 2 where it states that: "The Czech studies' program now is the only endowed chair in the depart­ ment."

Let us NOT falter now; send in your contributions to help reach our goal of $1.000,000.00; only $167,000 is needed! Let us go for it!

Many of our members have probably seen and/or watched the program "Better With Age" hosted by Mrs. Evelyn Hoffman at 9:00 to 9:30 a:m. for the past five years on TV Statton KXXV, Channel 25 (Cable .Channel 4 in West, Mart and Clifton and Cablevision Channel 5, Waco and Cable Channel 5, Temple, etc.) Sunday mornings.

For the last three Su~days, July 1st, 8th and 15th, the ethnic groups c?nsisted of Mexican, Greek and Italian (in that order) have been featured.

Sunday, July 29th, at 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the ethnic influence o~ the Czech-Moravian culture and hentage will be featured in Texas, Central Texas, West, etc.

Mrs. Hoffman, the p~ogram's producer, contacted your editor ~nd wife, Maxine, to be featured and give the historical ev~nts .and featu~es of the Czech-Moravian mflu~nce 1!1 our State of Texas and, especially, in the Waco-CentralTexas area.

A circle of the Czech Folk D~cers of West (who are also featured 1? .the August, 1990 Southern Llvíng magazine about performing at. the Texas Folklife Festival in Sa~ Antonio --August 4th and 5th.) will be featured, plus the SPJST and other fraternal societi~s, w.estfest, etc.

A real gentleman ••• When you have found a man you have not far to go to find a gentleman. You cannot make a gold ring out of brass. You cannot change a Cape May Crystal to a diamond. You cannot make a gentleman until you first find the man.

To be a gentleman is not sufficient to have had a grandfather. To b e a gentleman does not depend on the tailor. Blood will degenerate. Good clothes are not good habits.

A gentleman is a man who is gentle.

Titles, graceful accomplishments, su­ perior culture, princely wealth, great

talents, genius, do not constitute a man with all the attributes needed to make him a gentleman. He may be awkward, angular, homely or poor, and yet belong to the uncrowned aristocracy.

His face may be bronzed at the forge or bleached in the mill, his hand huge and hard, his patched vest, like Joseph's coat of many colors, and he may still be a true gentleman. The dandy is a dry goods sign, and not a gentleman, for he depends upon dress and not upon his honor and virtue, for his passport to the best circles of society. The man who has no money is poor, he who has nothing but money is poorer than he, and is not a gentleman.

Some of the most distinguished men in the world of letters, in the world of art, have been unamiable, gross, ungentle, consequently not gentlemen.

There is true dignity in labor, and no true dignity without it. He who looks down scornfully on labor is like Her­ mes, who had a mouth and no hands, and yet made faces at those who fed him --- mocking the fingers that brought bread to his lips.

He who writes a book, or builds a house, or tills a farm, or follows any useful employment, lives to some pur­ pose, and contributes something to the fund of human happiness.

Garibaldi, the greatest hero of his age, was a working man. Henry Clay was the millboy of the slashes. Daniel Webster knit his iron frame into strength by working on his father's farm when young.

A gentleman is a human being, com­ bining a woman's tenderness with a man's courage.

A gentleman is just a gentleman: no more, no less; a diamond polished was first a diamond in the rough. A gentleman is modest. A gentleman is courteous. A gentleman is slow to take offense, as being one who never gives it. A gentleman is slow to surmise evil, as being one who never thinks it. A gentleman subjects his appetites. A gentleman controls his speech. A gentleman deems every other person better than himself.

A real gentleman has a keen sense of humor scrupulously avoiding.me~n actions. His standards of probity rs word and action is high. He does not shuffle nor prevaricate, dodge nor sulk; but is honest, upright and straight-forward. His law is recitude -­ action inthe right lines. When he says yes it is a law; and he dares to say the valiant NO at the fitting season. The gentleman will not be bribed; only the unscrupulous will sell themselves to those who are interested in buying them.

Riches and rank have no necessary connection with genuine gentlemanly qualities. The poor man may be a real gentleman, in spirit and daily life. He may be honest, truthful, upright, polite, temperate, courageous, self-representing and self-helping --- that rs, be a real gentleman. The poor man with a rich spirit is in all ways superior to the rich man with a poor spirit. The former is as "having nothing, yet possessing all things," while the latter, though possessing all things, h~s noth­ ing. The .first hopes everything ~od fears nothmg; the latter hopes nothing and fears everything. Only the poor m spirit are really P?Or. He who has lost all, but retams his courage, cheer~ul­ ness, hope, virtue and self-respect is a real gentleman!

State Field Representative Jerome J. Hlavaty has been very busy lately. In performing his duties for SPJST in Districts 6 and 7, he has been in­ strumental in training 3 new sales rep­ resentatives in the past few weeks.

Jerome also assists and instructs sales representatives in their everyday insurance business. He provides sup­ port by answering questions, printing insurance proposals, completing spe­ cial projects, and keeping all sales rep­ resentatives up-to-date in the constantly changing life insurance scene.

Jerome is the local link between the sales representatives and the Supreme Lodge. State Field Manager Gene Mc­ Bride supervises Jerome along with District V SFR Helen Hegwood and District 3 SFR Jim Wiest. Although they are in different areas, their duties are the same -- to enable the local lodge sales representative to be of con­ sistently better service to you, the SPJST brother or sister. · Call your local. lodge sales repre­ sentative today and find out what ad-

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, July 1, 1990 the presi­ dent called the meeting to order, fol­ lowed by pledge to the flag led by Kevin Dobecka with members joining in.

Then President Johnnie Krizan wel­ comed our guests, namely, Brother Sid Pokladnik and Sister Justine Pokladník from Dallas Lodge 84, and Brother Bernard and Sister Betty Hlavaty from Arlington Lodge 183, Mid-Cities.

The minutes of our last meeting were read by Peggy Dobecka filling in for Barbara Hykel.

The treasurer's report was by Karen Kroll.

All reports were approved as given.

Thank you notes were received from the Albin C. Svacina family and Wal-

ter Krizan, Sr. family.

Financial Secretary George Straten read his report of the month, and Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her happenings with the youth stating some attended the District III YAD in Dallas at Lodge 84 on Sunday, June 24; and there were a few winners, namely, Keith Hykel in Foods, Tammi Dobecka in Sewing and Celia Dobecka received Honorable Mention. They also won second and third places in different categories.

Board Chairman George Straten reported that a job was well carried out from those who were on the commit­ tees for our 93rd Annual Lodge Picnic that was supposed to have been held Sunday, July 15th. At this writing, the picnic was already held and over with which was a nice and cool day. We had a very successful picnic.( More on this in my next report. We missed the

editor and his wife because they al­ ways attend.)

At this time, the president called on Brother Sid Pokladník if he would like to say a few words, which he did and gave us some good points about our lodge being very active and progress­ ing well; then he reached in his pocket and pulled out a little jewelry box and called on President Johnnie Krizan to come forward and said he would like to present him this special SPJST pin with a small diamond in it for being a Million Dollar Producer for 3 consecu­ tive years.

Lodge 6 members are proud to have such a good producer among us and I think this made him happy, too.

Other members who always take good care of our lodge hall and grounds are George and Josie Mae Straten, Robert and Lydia Dobecka, Edward Hykel, and Larry Mechell by shredding the grass and mowing the small plots by pushing the mower, trimming hedges, watering flowers, etc. Lydia Dobecka sprayed the fire ants around the hall. We appreciate all this very much; it always looks nice and clean. A sweet "thanks" to them from all of us who are concerned.

Our president recognized the cooks who prepared our meal at the last meeting; they were Lydia and Robert Dobecka. There were too many varieties of dishes to remember to name them all, however, it tasted good and it was enjoyed by those who were there to eat. There were also all kinds of good "ole" Czech sweets brought by some members; someone brought one special pastry which looked like cream puffs and were extra delicious. My guess would be: Sister Georgia Skerik, as always. It is very much appreciated by all of us to have this type of feast.

Then it came time for prizes.

Today's meeting day door prize lucky person was Sister Peggy Dobecka.

Progressive prizes were announced: First $10--Barbara Wachamann and second prize of $6--Paul Sembera and the other prizes were donated by Ruth Krizan, Henry Matus, Willie Mae Schuetz. the Bill Skeriks, Youth Club. and Robert and Lydia Dobecka. The winners were Karen Kroll, Robert Dobecka, Ruth Krizan, Lydia Dobecka, Kevin Dobecka, Edward Hykel and Bobby Dobecka.

This is always the beginning of a lot of fun, having your name called out because it makes you wonder what you are going to get: just like little kids with happy and smiling faces.

Our next board meeting is Friday.

July 27 at 8 p.m.; and lodge meeting is Friday • August 3 at 8 p.m. The hall is booked on the first Sunday of our regular meeting date. Remember, the dates: July 27 at 8 p.m. and regular lodge meeting on August 3. also at 8 p.m. Be sure to attend and hear the results of our annual picnic. · Fraternally.

Lodge No. 13, Dime Box SPJST Lodge No. 13 held its regular meeting Sunday, July 15 at 2 p.m. with sixteen members present.

The meeting was called to order by President Ricky Ford. The pledge to the flag was recited by all.

Roll call of officers revealed eleven present and two absent.

Secretary Dorothy Rackel read the June minutes. There being no correc­ tions or additions, they were accepted by carried motion.

Treasurer Debbie Kostelka gave her report and it was accepted as given.

The Dime Box Homecoming to be held on October 6, 1990 was dis­ cussed. There will be no charge for booths from local organizations such as churches, schools, fire department, etc. A $15 charge for out-of-town booths will be charged by the Homecoming Committee.

A motion was made, seconded and voted upon and carried that any direc­ tor who does not attend a monthly meeting will not be allowed free ad­ mission to dances for that month. This will be effective August 19, 1990.

The lodge decided to purchase new T-Shirts for our volleyball team. They have done real good so far and we hope they keep up the good work.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Dear Friends: President Gladys Allison called the meeting to order on Sunday, July 8th.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as read.

There were 3 visitors present, name­ ly, Lillie Zajicek, Ellie Cross and Frank Janicek.

Anton Svetlik is still on the sick list.

Members of Lodge 15 planned a game night for Thursday, July 19 and invited everyone to come to the com­ munity affair and were asked to bring dominoes, Taroky or any other games anyone had wished to play. Members were also asked to bring finger food for snacks and refreshments.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, August 12 at 3 p.m.

Lodge No. 17, New Tabor Meeting

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: The July meeting was called to order

by President LaVerne Cabla and all of­ ficers were present.

Members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silent prayer in honor of deceased, Mr. Joe Schneider.

Visitors recognized at our meeting were Mr. Ed Marchalk, Mr. and Mrs. George Schiller, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and his wife, Adeline Kohutek. We want to thank you for visiting and hope you can come visit again, soon.

Those in attendance celebrating birthdays in July were Willie E. Kohutek and Barbara Macek.

Anniversary celebrants were Mr. and Mrs. George Schiller, Joe and Rosemond Baker. Hope you all have a wonderful day.

The minutes of our June meeting were read and approved. Several items of correspondence were also read.

Margaret Mikeska reported on the proposed price changes of the hall for weddings and parties. The price chan­ ges and new rules for decorating the hall were voted on and passed. A copy of the new rules will be given to each person renting the hall.

Board report was given by Louise Zavodny.

Due to the resignation of our youth leader, Rose Harvell, a new youth leader was voted on; Shirley Ashcraft accepted the job. Barbara Macek said she would help with the kids. A big THANK YOU to Shirley for taking the job and, mothers, please help as much as possible to keep the club going.

The members of Lodge 24 should be especially proud of Melanie Zavodny who won the District II queen title at YAD in Round Rock. As far as we know, Melanie is the first District II queen from Lodge No. 24. Repre­ senting Lodge 24 duchess was Jennifer Ashcraft. Congratulations to both, Melanie and Jennifer, also best of luck at State Royalty!

The meeting was then turned over to Willie E. Kohutek who headed the 50year pin ceremony. Those receiving pins were Wayman Richter, Jr., Albina Dornhoefer and Franklin Martinec, Jr. Mrs. Martinec accepted her son's pin for him since he lives out-of-state.

We also honored a member who has outlived her policy, who was none other then, Mrs. Fannie Bartek. Con­ gratulations to you members, and we thank you for being a special part of our meeting. I would also like to thank Brother Kohutek his time to make this a more memorable occasion for these members.

The meeting was then adjoúrned until August 13 at 7 :30 p.m.

Members were served a light supper afterwards. Thanks to those ladies who furnished the desserts.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17. New Tabor, held its regular monthly meeting on July 1, 1990.

The Fall District I meeting will be held at New Tabor on September 23rd.

Those wishing to participate locally in volleyball should call Carol Petty at 272-3078 or Susan Skrabanek at 2723440 as soon as possible so they can start practicing.

We had one new member, Philip Coldwell.

We will also have a Tarok Tourna­ ment on Saturday, September 22nd.

A moment of silence was observed for our deceased members. They are Brother Gene Ruhl, Brother Charlie Novy and Brother Matthew Trojacek.

All of these members will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved them.

We had a very special guest with us at our meeting. Brother Gene McBride came to present two very special awards to two of our sales repre­ sentatives, namely, Sister Kaye Lynn Kovar received a pin and certificate, The Fraternal Field Manager's Course.

Also, Brother Gene presented Brother Johnnie I. Krajca with a pin for his Million Dollar sales. Congratulations to both of you on your accomplish­ ments.

Our next meeting will be held on August 9, 1990. Our meeting time is 8 p.m. Those of you who are members, we would really like to see you at our meetings. We have really been having a good turnout.

Lodge No. 80, Holland President Harold Rohde called the regular monthly meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 8th.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

The Holland Volunteer Fire Depart­ ment is sponsoring a fund-raising dance at Lodge No. 80 on Saturday, July 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with music by The Back Roads Band.

All proceeds will be used for the new truck that the Fire Department has pur­ chased.

Lodge No. 81, Needville . The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81 was held on Sunday, July 15, 1990. From 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.. thirty-one members and guests enjoyed a bountiful meal and fellowship.

Sister Benita Walzel prepared a tender beef roast and gravy, while Sister Mary Werner brought tasty sausage. As usual, the attending lodge sisters brought a variety of deli­ cious vegetables, salads and baked goodies. Thanks to all who brought food.

President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, led by Brady Blasdel, we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members, Julia Laza, Oscar Woytek and Ladd Stavinoha. May they rest in peace. Our heartfelt sympathy is ex­ tend to their families.

Our special guests for this meeting were to be the four recent SPJST scholarship recipients from Needville High School. Present were recipient Brady Blasdel, his mother Jeannie and young brother, Bailey. Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Lester Beyer, standing in · for their daughter Celeste Beyer. Unable to be with us were recipients Darcy Gill and Spencer Wallis. Spencer was on a field trip to Canada with a local Boy Scout Troop.

All officers were present. Minutes of the June meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and accepted with a minor change. She also gave the financial secretary's report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented the treasurer's report for the month and Gilbert Walzel gave the monthly bui1ding and special fund report.

Secretary Werner read thank you let­ ters from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II and from the Pleak Village Fire Department.

President Macha read correspon­ dence concerning the drawing to be held at the District V September meet­ ing in Danbury. Discussion followed.

On our sick list are Brothers Emil Bezecny and Henry Wetz. We all wish you progress in your recovery.

President Macha presented the first SPJST scholarship to Brady Blasdel, who expressed his thanks and told us of his plans for the fall semester in college. His mother, Mrs. Jeannie Blasdel, a Needville High School teacher, also expressed appreciation on behalf of the Needville community and schools from the interest shown by Lodge No. 81 in providing the oppor­ tunity for our students to pursue their studies beyond high school.

On behalf of Celeste Beyer, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Beyer, accepted and thanked us for her scholarship. Celeste will be pursuing studies leading to a degree in phar­ macy. Our best wishes go to these young people while they continue their studies to achieve the goals they have set for themselves.

In the June meeting, it was decided that Reporter Louise Newman would write and submit an article to the local newspaper giving a few facts about what SPJST actually is and how our local lodge contributes to the better-

ment of our community and county.

This article appeared in the July 12 issue of the Gulf Coast Tribune and will also be submitted for publication in the Rosenberg paper. In the future notices of our monthly meetings will also be published locally.

Under new business, we voted to obtain a membership card in Sam's Wholesale Club in order that the lodge can purchase needed supplies at a sub­ stantial discount.

Observing recent birthdays were members, Charlie Matcek, Alvin Blinka, Sr., Alvin Blinka, Jr. and Amanda Newman.

For young member, Jason Vallet, a highlight of the summer will surely be the field trip to Canada of the local Boy Scouts. The group departed on July 10th.

Young member, Amanda Newman, is an amateur magician. On June 28, as­ sisted by little sister Lynnette, she presented two magic shows to the story hour groups at the Needville library.

Door prize winners for July were Willie Mae Kuykendall, Alvin Blinka, Adolph Macha and Donnie Matcek.

REMEMBER--our meeting schedule has·been changed to a year-round basis of daytime meetings on the third Sun­ day of each month at 12:00 noon. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, August 19, beginning at 12:00 noon with dinner followed by the business meeting at 1 :00 p.m. The lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring a vegetable, salad, or dessert. Before the meal at 5:30 p.m., Vrazels played for the grand march led by Kirby and Effie Vogler, and from 6:30 · to 9:30 p.m., the Texas Central Sounds played for the second session of danc­ ing.

Herberts from Bleiberville, Texas catered the most delicious meal con­ sisting of brisket, sausage and chicken with plenty pastry, and a beautiful an­ niversary cake.

I have to write a few remarks about Ruth and Bob because we were all raised in the same area. Ruth was the youngest child from the late. Charlie and Albina Halamicek Hilsher family.

There were 4 boys, namely, Al, John and Charlie (twins) and Harold -- all unfortunately have passed away, ex­ cept John. Ruth also has 3 sisters, Elenora Lange, Josephine Pflughaupt and Gladys Havemann with Ruth being the baby; I often hear them call her Babe Ruth.

Bob was from Willow Springs. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Martinak .. He has 3 sisters, Esther Sterner, Ella Schmidt and Frances Lahrmann. Bob's niece, Beatrice Rost, was at the registration table. Beautiful­ ly decorated!

Comment: You didn't have to search very long for the grandchildren be­ cause they were all dressed in red, like their grandmother, Ruth.

Everyone had a delightful time, and we wish you two nice people many, more happy and healthy years.

I just got home yesterday from a week's vacation with my children, Al and Arlene Marshall at Weimar; also, Pam and Adam Marshall, plus Karen Larry and Shawn Hernandez from Waco who spent the weekend. Believe me, they had a great time golfing. My two great-grandsons, Shawn and Adam played in a golf tournament. I had so much fun riding in the golf cart (rough).

Mrs. Gladys Smallwood, a member of the Entertainment Committee, asked me to write about the ballroom dance class, which is being organized at Lodge 88. A noted dance master and former Arthur Murray instructor, Carl Rentz, will be the instructor. He teachers foxtrot, swing, waltz, tango, rhumba, cha-cha-cha, samba-mamba.

The classes are taught 6 weeks to couples, singles and seniors, starting July 24, 1990, then .each Tuesday thereafter from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and $25 per person for 6 weeks.

What a Party! Bob and Ruth Mar­ tinak put on a beautiful celebration for their 40th anniversary, with many, many friends and relatives taking part.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: We try not to remember when it was cold sometime ago because now it makes us feel hot. We need to have hot weather to make things grow and also makes us sweat so we can get the meanness out of us. The best thing is not to think about hot weather only cool weather. Of course, one shouldn't stay in the sun too much unless you have plenty of clothes on, because they claim that too much sun causes skin cancer.

I remember before all the modern machinery was available we had to work with our hands; to do any garden work, we also had to work with a mule or spading fork. In the cotton patch one could see men, women and children picking cotton but they al­ ways had plenty of clothes on for protection. They would sweat and the clothes would get wet and a little breeze would blow and it would cool them off.

May be with all the concrete walks and roads in the city they get hot and stay that way until early morning, then about noon the sun would heat up, again. As the old saying goes: We can talk about the weather but we have to take it as it comes.

I suppose June was a busy month everywhere. There were graduations, reunions, family get-togethers, vaca­ tions and also wedding anniversaries.

Christine and -Carl Zich celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in a fashioned-style.

Many friends and relatives were present at our reception.

We are proud to be together for so many years to enjoy ourselves; infact we went together for 4 years before we got married, so in all, we have known each other for 54 years. The hall was decorated very nicely, also had plenty of food and drinks. The Cen-Tex Band played very nice music and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Today our daughter is leaving to her home in Florida. She lives in Cape Canaveral and gets to see many "shots" that are launched into space.

(We only see her about once a year but we get to talk on the phone often.)

It was a surprise that we got a nice rain on July 5 which was surely wel­ comed, because it helped some but we could use more rain so things don't dry up.

Our lodge meeting on July 8 was a nice one. The officers gave favorable reports and the food afterward was delicious.

It was nice to hear that our youth club did so well at the District III YAD in Dallas. Melissa and Holly Hubenak also did well. Both of them presented a bag woman skit from McDonald's and performed a tap dance for us at the meeting. There were some items on display that the youth made and all were very pretty.

We were happy to have a visitor, Ms. Alena Zabranska from Czechoslovakia who is a niece of Sister Millie (Haba) Wruble. Alena is a very nice looking lady and it was pleasant to talk to her who speaks little English but very good in Czech which was wonderful to listen to. She came from Prague and is

While she was in Texas, she attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Pall in El Campo. She went to Louisiana to the horse races, then to Las Vegas, Nevada to enjoy the gam­ bling.

Alena Zabranskova said she really enjoyed seeing the states and said the people were very friendly. We were glad to have met her and hope she will come again. She also said if anyone of us come to Prague to look her up and she will return the favor she received while in the states.

Carol Z. Everett is also a member of our lodge and she enjoys attending our meeting whenever she's here.

Time is getting short and lots of planning has to be done for our Czech Festival in September. Brother Al Ker­ cho is heading this project, so please contact him or some of the committee members who are working with this program.

On July 22 we had a lodge dance and a hat contest. There was a contest for pretty, crazy and other types of hats.

The music was by the Henry Rejcek Band from 4 to 8 p.m.

The sunshine chairperson sent birthday cards to members over 65 years of age. There were 12 of them who will have a birthday in July, so to all of you -- many more birthdays in the future!

Door prizes were won by Rose Jaworski, Rudy Wruble and President Albert Kubala.

Caldwell's 6th Annual Kolache Festival On September 8, 1990 we will celebrate the 6th Annual Kolache Fes­ tival on the square in Downtown Caldwell.

The Kolache Festival is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage.

We share the history and bring into today's focus the beauty, talent and delight of the Czech people.

Come to the Kolache Festival and learn and see the technique of stencil­ ing, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, sculpturing, dance the polka, sing the songs of the musicians and taste the true ethnic foods.

There will be entertainment from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Some of the enter­ tainers will be the Vrazels, the Mikulas, East Bernard Czech Singers, Gulf Coast Singers, Junior Beseda Dancers from New Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17, Senior Beseda Dancers from Seaton SPJST Lodge No. 47, Burleson County Czech Singers, Original Kolache Fest Band, Clem Kubacak and the Flatlanders of Geogetown, Sunshine Gospelairs, Nor­ bert Blazek--Texas Czech Singer, Kovanda's Czech Band of Fayetteville and many others.

There will be museums and history displays, quilt show, Czech bookstore, The Czech tlag ceremony, the Czech National Anthem, antique automobile show and classic motor cars, art show, antique engines and machinery show.

There will be also antiques, Czech gardens with delightfully ethnic flavored foods and drinks with plenty of kolaches and more food and drink booths than in the past. · Also demonstrations in kolache baking, pasta making, farmer's cheese, butter churning, sausage stuffing, tat­ ting, quilting, Tarok playing and much more.

Trojacek Reunion The descendants of the late John, Frank, Josef, Anton, Mary (Cepák), and Annie (Krajca) Trojacek (children of Vaclav Trojacek and Veronica Honsa of Rodetice, Bohemia) will meet Sunday, August 12, 1990 at the SPJST Lodge No. 25 on Highway 34 East of Ennis, Texas. All family mem­ bers and interested friends are asked to please attend. Registration will begin at 11 a.m, Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m, Each family is asked to bring enough meat, vegetables, salad and dessert for their family. Admission of $5 per family, or $2.50 per a single person, will be charged to cover ex­ penses. Plates, silverware, bread, tea and coffee will be furnished. Dear Members, I must say, District VI summer camp was a lot of fun this year! Our group consisted of 29 youth and chaperones from El Campo-Hillje and Taiton SPJST Youth Clubs. We camped at Camp Lone Star in La Grange from June 3rd through June 6th.

Stephanie Roye, Kim Kacal, Darren Dybala and Danny Borak served as LITs and did a wonderful job. They presented State Youth Director Claudette Reese with a keepsake ar­ rangement created with items found at camp and their "Thoughts for the Day" were enjoyed by everyone.

"Pioneer Days" was the theme for the 1990 Sumer Youth Camp. Stephanie Roye won the statewide T-Shirt Design Contest and was presented a Sony Radio Cassette Recorder and a 35MM camera by State Youth Director Claudette Reese.

Everyone then received their camp 'I'-Shirt.

Activities at camp revolved around the "Pioneer Days" theme. The campers enjoyed a cookout, archery, canoeing and folk dancing. While hiking, they looked for fossils and each found a walking stick to help them along the trails. Crafts included basket weaving, colored sand art, and making indian headbands with colored feathers that they used for the Indian Pow Wow. Each camper brought a water pistol and participated in. shootouts and duels. They really en­ joyed making homemade ice cream by rolling coffee cans containing ice cream mixture surrounded by ice and packed in a larger coffee can back and forth to each other. We made vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and they were all sooooo good! l They also en­ joyed games, swimming, volleyball, flag ceremonies and parties.

Everyone attending camp chose an Indian name to be used during camp.

The LITs designed the name tags and presented them 'to everyone during a special campfire ceremony on the first night. Afterward everyone enjoyed a candlelight story-telling session where each camper added to the ongoing story using their pioneer word in­ scribed on their candleholder.

The campers also had fun naming their cabins as follows: "Limber Squaws Hut," "Pigwam,"

"Fox Hole," and "Rats Nest."

Highlighting the "Roundup at the Lorie Star Corral" were guest ap­ pearances by Minnie Pearl (Darren Dybala), Clint Black (Danny Borak), and the Judds (Kim Kacal and Stephanie Roye). Entertaining with a dance/gymnastic's routine were also the little squaws from "Limber Squaws Hut" which included Jeanine Dorotik, Sarah and Rachel Dluhos, Lisa Reck and Crystal Roye. "Crazy Horse" (Claudette) helped with their routine.

For the "Indian Pow Wow," the campers wore their feathered head­ bands and Stephanie Roye painted their faces. They gathered together for an Indian War Dance and proceeded into the woods for a night hike com­ plete with a campfire, singing and story-telling. To add to the setting, an Indian Tee Pee was created and each camper decorated it with their Indian name and symbol.

Attending from Taiton Lodge No. 30 were Sarah and Rachel Dluhos, Craig Dornak, Curtis Dorotík, Crystal Roye, Jason Kaspar, Chase Zalman, Chad Dorotík, Valerie Roye, Jeanine Dorotík, Craig Dorotík, Michael Kaspar, Bradley Krpec and Stephanie Roye.

Chaperones were Wanda Dorotik, Karen Kaspar and Marcy Dorotik.

Attending from El Campo-Hillje Lodge No. 40 were Jennifer Reck, Jody Krpec, Sharon Borak, Jared Dybala, Brian Kutach, Lisa Reck, Danny Borak, Kim Kacal and Darren Dybala. Mary Ann Karasek and Vic Dybala attended as their chaperones.

Everyone enjoyed President Howard Leshikar's visit and his participation in the water pistol "shootout"!

Koncem prvního čtvrtletí letošního roku je v Československu podle reálných odhadů na 150 tisíc soukromě podnikajících osob. I když tento boom, vyvolaný radikální změnou podmínek umožňujících soukromé podnikání, přinese kromě nesporných pozitiv i mnohá úskalí, která bude muset postupně korigovat sama praxe.

Je zřejmé, že žádná oblast národního hospodářství nezůstane stranou pro­ buzeného podnikatelského zájmu.

Svědčío tom mimo jiné i dokumentace Sazu podnikatelů CSSR, zájmového sdružení založeného na podporu volného podnikání, které se mimo jiné hned v prvních týdnech své existence aktivně podílelo na návrhu tzv. Živ­ nostenského zákona a úpravě dalších zákonných norem s tím souvisejících.

Kromě poskytování služeb nejrůznějšího charakteru se podnikatelé hodlají zabývat prakticky všemi druhy výroby (kromě oblastí právně vyhrazených monopolu státu), a to i s využitím překvapivě hojných nabídek zahraniční spoluúčasti.

Stranou zájmu nezůstává ani tak na první pohled netradiční odvětví,jakým je výroba elektrické energie. Počátkem ledna se sdružili zájemci z celé republiky o efektivní soukromé podnikání v oblasti zřizování a pro­ vozování malých vodních elektráren (s renesancí těchto doplňkových energetických zdrojů bylo v ČSSR započato již před deseti lety, avšak v období megalomanských elektráren tato činnost narážela na naprosté nepochopení úřadů). Později by mělo jít i o systematické využívání dalších energetických zdrojů, jako např. bioplynu, dřevoplynu, solární a větrné energie a podobně.

I když "soukromá energetika" neovlivní zásadně "energetiku státní", má, kromě prokazatelného přínosu stovek či tisíců megawattů vyrobených těmito doplňkovými zdroji, ještě jeden nezanedbatelný aspekt: příslib zlepšení životního prostředí. Proto Je i z celospolečenskéhohlediska tato forma soukromé podnikavosti nanejvýš žádoucí a vítaná.

Byli jedni rodiče a měli jedneho syn­ ka. A byli chudobni. Tak ten tatik chodil do lesa a tuž ta maminka vařila. A jak už ten synek byl věkši, no tuž šel snim do lesa. A tesali dřevo. A dycky přišel ku nim ten fešter a dycky se ho vyptaval.

A potym pravěl: ,,Vitě, tatíčku, dajtě se ho vyučiť!" A ten tatík prajel: ,,A, vyučif se ho tam - němamy peníz, lepši až při mě je." Ale prošil ho ten fešter. Pravi: ,,Tuž [a se zoptam zítra, to vam povim."

Přišel dodom, povědal to tej svojej matce. Na tuž matka pravi: ,,Tuž vyučiť je dobře, tuž ho damy."

Přišel rano ten fešter do teho lesa, tuž mu pravět ten fešter: ,,Datě ho?" • Dam! - No tuž pravi: ,,Tuž se roztuětě, ale za rok a za tři dni to přiďtě pro něho. Po­ znatě ho - to he dostanětě, něpoznatě ho - to ho nědnstanětěl" Chlop hledi na Ieštra, praví: ,,No jakož [a bych tež syn­ ka něpoznal!" Na tuž rozlučili se a řeš­ ter vzal synka a šel. A ten fešter ešče byl dale], zas mu praví: ,,Ale jak ho po­ znatě zaraz, tak ho dostanětě, něpoznatě ho - nědostanětě ho!"

Na děň za dněm utěkal, až ten rok přišel. Jak už byl rok a tři dni, tuž stary chlopek se vzal španihelku a šel do teho lesa. Přišel ku lesu · potkal ho taky stary staříček: A praví mu: ,,Tuž kaj idětě?"

A ten chlopek plakal, a pravi: ,,Kaj ídu, synka sem před rokem dal feštrovi učiť a mi praví, eli ho poznam, to ho dostanu, něpoznam ho - nědostanu." - Ale vitě, ja vam povím: ,,Un je za ptaka, un sedi v třetěj izbě na třetí žerdee. A jak vy vlezetě, to un ene zrobí tak, do vrchu, a budě stať."

Na fešter už stal ve dveřoch a čekal na chlopka. Přišel, pozdravil. Pravi mu ten fešter zas: ,,Ale vitě, eli ho poznatě, toho dostanětě, něpoznatě, nědostanětě!"

No tuž ho ved do te jedne izby - tam bylo ptakuv! [a, pohlidal ten staříček, praví: ,,Něni ho tu nikdi!" Potym do dru­ hej izby, zas pohlídal - něni ho tu! Do te třeée izby přišel • hledí, tam je ptaček, hleděl tak do vrchu, pravi: ,,No ten to je!" • No je to vaš? - ,,Je!" Tuž ho chyt­ nuJ. Ale ten staříček mu pravěl ešče: ,,Jak přidětě ku mě, kaj my spolem řadimy, to ho potym pustě z te šnuptychle, to budě synek, ale spěš ni, až hevaj, kaj my stojimy."

No tuž mu ten fešter dal teho ptačka i šel. A ten ptak se už třepal! A potym pak přišel, kaj je ten staříček, tuž potym ho puštil • rychtik, synek byl, Polubali se, poplakali a přišli dom.'

No tuž matka byla rada! No tuž na, druhy děň šli do roboty. No tuž tesali.· A potym v jednym městě byl jarmak. Tuž ten synek pravi: ,,Tatíčku, ja se zrobím za byka. Peníz dostanětě za mě i je fer­ tik."

No tuž byl ten jarmak, ten synek se zrobil i šel. Předal ho, dostal hromadu peněz. A potym byka uvazali, chtěli ho zabijať • ten se zrobil za myšku, vyškra­ bal d'uru, navrch přišel - byl synek. Vzal i šel dodom - něbylo nicej - křik v dědi­ ně, že se byk (ztratil], že ho zlodij ukrad. I něbylo byka, něbylo, i hotove. ' No potym zas - peníze uchodily, tuž zas pravi ten synek: ,,Tatíčku, němamy

Na zas to kolik dni baj čekalo, baj mě­ síc, tu zaspotym praví: ,,Tatíčku, včil ja se zrobím za kona, ale vitě, telej vas prosím, něprodajtě mě s uzdum!" No ten tatík příslubil ternu synkovi, praví: ,,Ně­ buj se, ja tě něprodam!"

No jak přišel na jarmak, chlopi kole něho - fajny kun byl, no tuž tak dluho, až ho prodal. No jak ho prodal, tuž pe­ níze schoval. A včil se mu zpomělo, že něma jeho uzdu. Tuž chtěl uzdu vzať, ale ti masaře na něho - jak oni kona po­ vedu, s uzdum - i hotove! Tak oblupili chlopa, i chlop prodal i s uzdum.

Kun byl smutny, přišli zaraz ku kova­ lovi, zaraz kovala volali, že ma podkovy zrobit, že ho musí okuť. No tuž koval praví: ,,Ja, takeho kona, ja němam take podkovy, ja ju musím zrobit!" - No ja, zrub, zrub, a ja budu čekať na tn! Na teho kona uvazali - přišla tam šes· tileta děvuška, stala při ternu koňovi. A ten kuň se tak tu hlavu naklunil a praví: .,Děvuško,zhud' mi z teho jedneho ucha tu uzdu!" Tuž ta děvuška tak hledi, ten kuň tu hlavu tak naklonil, zhodila mu tu uzdu z teho ucha. I něbylo [nic], kuň stal.

Včil přišel ten, co ho kupil, lapnul z teho koňa tu uzdu, ta uzda spadla a ten

kuň se zrobil za ptačka, a ten pan, cu ho kupil, to byl ten fešter - ten se zrobil za jestřaba. A včil hnali ene k sobě.

A včil jedne děvuchy říkaly v poledňo.

Tuž ta jedna děvucha pravi: ,,Taky velky ptak honi takeho maleho, pusť ho tež!"

Odevřela tež a ten ptaček tam skočil a zrobil se za pyrstenek. A ten se zrobil za muzikanta. A hral, až cela dědina kři­ čela. A dycky co jeden [kusek] - co to chcetě za to? - ,.Nic!" - A ten prstenek potym pravi: ,,Vitě, jak bystě mě dali, to ni do ruky, ene hodiť!"

Tuž jak se už im omrzlo posluchať mu­ ziku, tuž potym teho prstenka vzali a hodili ho • ten se zrobil za zrnko. A ten muzikant se zrobil za kokota. A chodil a ten kokot letal a dzubal. Ale ten - to zrnko bylo ešče mocpěise, se zrobilo za lišku a teho kokota zahryzlo.

Tuž se synek zrobil potem za synka a přišel dodom a věc a věc se už za nic něrobil. [Bo ten tatiček ho něposlech­ nul, jak ho s tum uzdum prodal.]
