Tuesday afternoon, July 10 your editor attended the Supreme Lodge quarterly meeting and spent the time observing the proceedings of the Board.

The directors gave their respective reports, SYD Claudette Reese made her quarterly report and presented her plans for the future of the Youth Pro­ gram and, ending the afternoon, was the discussion of the Goals and Objec­ tives which had been in formulative stages for some time. At 5:30 p.m., it was time to call it a day.

Thursday afternoon, in a telephone conversation with SL Secretary­ Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, we received the information that the Goals and Objectives were officially adopted to work for the good of the fu­ ture of our Society; they cover all the interests of our fraternal benefit or­ ganization ---from the youth to our elderly members. You will be hearing more about these aspects in the future.

The visit at the Supreme Lodge meeting was beneficial and one thing all of us should remember --- all of us members have a "stake" in our Society and we all "profit" when our SPJST prospers and "lose" when we stagnate or stand stilll Refer to the back page and enter the "Vision '90" membership contest.

In so many instances understanding Czech phrases, getting the main idea, if not every word, of broadcasts from the Slav-speaking countries, being able to read good books, newspapers and literature, are the immediate results within the grasp of the average individual=a knowledge of one Slavonic language, be it Czech, Rus­ sian, Polish, or any of the others, ser­ ves as a key to all the other languages.

It will go a long way toward giving you an understanding of these ele­ ments in our country, as well as an un­ derstanding of all Slavs of Europe. It will give you many opportunities for service and will help you to contribute your part to international neighborli­ ness which is so greatly needed today.

Whether you enter the diplomatic ser­ vice, work in the State Department, serve as a translator or teach these lan­ guages at some leading university or college, you will be filling a great need; a need which is felt more keenly every day.

My best to you young boys and girls who are very much interested in learn­ ing higher education the Czech lan­ gauge to be able to teach on the college or high school level; you are also to be commended for your en­ deavor! Rest assured that the editor has never regretted having knowledge of it in daily life, U.S. Service, busi­ ness, radio broadcasting, on the stage and especially now as your bilingual editor.

Cardiologists are excited by the recent approval of Ethmozine, a Soviet drug, to treat a type of irregular heartbeat known as ventricular ar­ rhythmia. The condition, in which electrical impulses in the heart become erratic, results in irregular contractions and causes 300,000 deaths a year. Al­ though other drugs are used to treat the condition, side effects -- nausea and more-frequent irregular impulses -­ occur in up to 30 percent of patients and force many off the drugs. Eth­ mozine causes side effects in only about 10 percent of patients.

Ethmozine's approval is especially significant because two widely used drugs, Tambocor and Enkaid, have been prescribed only for life-threaten­ ing cases since a study published last year found that 8 percent of 730 patients on the drugs died of the ar­ rhythmia, while only 3 percent of 725 given a placebo died. Ethmozine, too, has been approved only for life­ threatening cases, but once a drug has the FDA nod, doctors can use their dis­ cretion in prescribing it. The drug .........

We already have a color TV donated by Lodge No. 13 9, Danbury and a vacuum cleaner by District V youth. We will accept any items no matter how large or small.

Cash donations will be great because we can use that money to purchase some nice prizes. The proceeds from this drawing will be set aside to estab­ lish a fund for the upcoming 1992 Convention. The district hopes to have a hospitality room for all District V delegates.

Seaton Star Hall, Lodge 47, will be hosting its annual ice cream social on July 20, 1990 as part of our regular monthly family and social night. All members and guests are asked to bring a half gallon of their favorite store­ bought or homemade ice cream. The kitchen will be open for hamburgers, as usual, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and ice cream will be served at about 8:00 p.m.

In addition to the night's activities, all members who are interested in playing volleyball" this year, will get together to try a little practice. (We might even use the net.)

Attention: District V SPJST Lodges The date for District V Family Day has been changed. This year's event will be an old-fashioned family picnic hosted by Lodge No. 139 on Saturday, October 13, 1990 at the Pavilion Park in Danbury, Texas.

The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a brief meeting, followed by a covered dish meal at 11 :30 a.m., so bring your favorite dessert and/or vegetable. The meal will be furnished by District V. Drinks will be available. Activities will be organized for all ages. More in­ formation will be announced in the Vestnik.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton The SPJST Lodge No. 47 meeting was called to order by President George Pavelka at 2 p.m. on July 1, 1990.

PFC Jeff Bartek, son of Mrs. Juanita Bartek and the late Alton J. Bartek, Sr. and PVT Edward Pavelka, son of George and Marie Pavelka are the two young men who graduated recently from basic training. They brought in the flags and led the membership in the pledge to the flag. Also all veterans were honored in honor of Fourth of July. All members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother John Kelarek and aJI deceased veterans.

Visitors recognized were Laurie Ann Banowsky and Freddie Schroeder.

Welcome and do come, again.

Thanks to Ann and Gene Hejl for donating the beautiful cake in honor of Jeff Bartek and Edward Pavelka.

Mary Ann Greger was introduced and welcomed as our new member; also Denise Murray who has trans­ ferred to our lodge from Lodge No. 24.

Reporterd on the sick list were Mary Frances Zavodny, Tony Orsag and Frank Mikeska.

Frankie Klinkovský gave a report in absence of FAC Tim Reese. We will have a family night on July 20 which will be an ice cream social, so please bring your favorite ice cream, homemade or bought. If anyone is in-: terested in playing volleyball for the district or state, be sure to come on July 20 to sign up or contact Tim Reese at 774-8912 after 6 p.m. A Taroky Tournament will be held at Lodge No. 29, Taylor on September 29, 1990.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported there were 33 members, 5 adults and 2 visitors present. The July social will be a trip to Schlitterbahn on July 19th.

Birthdays for the month of July are Jimmy Schroeder, Jerome Orsag, Wil­ lie E. Kohutek, Vallie Zavodny and Lonnie Schroeder.

Lodge No. 88, Houston On June 26, 1990, two busloads of social night workers and members of the SPJST Lodge boarded the buses at 7:00 a.m. We had a wonderful trip -­ arrived in Galveston between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. We boarded the ship PRIDE and, immediately, were served a champagne brunch, featuring fresh fruit, assorted cheese and hot dishes, muffins and champagne at a nominal charge. Constant entertain­ ment was available in their spacious lounges. The afternoon buffet was served from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., which was free. Plenty good food was available. The closing time of the casino was 4:00 p.m. and we arrived in Galveston at 6:00 p.m. and back in Houston at 8:00 p.m.

A NEW BABY: Donald and Gina Cox had a little boy born to them on June 19, 1990, weighing 9 pounds and 2 ounces (quite a guy!) He was named Cody Paul Cox, and he joins his little ž-year-old sister, Kayla.

The grandparents are Harley and Viola Cox, and Carlton and Nelda McCoy. I hope Cody will tum out to be a good youth member like Donnie was. I went to Six Flags with the youth one year, and I was in charge of 5 hyper­ boys, namely: Donnie Cox, James Vornsand, Joe Marshall, Lin Lesak, and Bruce Lindemann. They nearly wore me out, but did we have fun!

They all turned out to be great guys, and I still love them all. We wish the Cox family lots of luck and good health with their little boy.

On June 30, 1990 Jack Melick, the "Piano Man" played at Lodge 88. A beautiful band that is. He played to a big crowd of wonderful people. Syd­ ney and Gerogie Jurchak were in charge of this dance, Ray and Delores Krampota, also Walter and Josephine Koeppen assisted them. This was a dress code dance; evidently, someone did not read the rules because this neat-looking gentleman came without a tie. Luckily, we keep extra ties on hand to keep from sending them home.

Harley with the folks at the door, soon had fixed him up with a tie, and he en­ joyed dancing. Be sure and check your calendar as to the dress code because we don't want to be embarrassed and neither do you. Thank you, so much!

We are so sorry to report that our dear friend Franklin Bravenec is back in the hospital, suffering excruciating pains in his back. We are praying that soon they will find the cause and can treat it accordingly.

Frank Sebek, who has been ill and in the hospital, is doing fine. The doctor decided he didn't have to have his ton­ sils removed. I know Frank is delighted about that.

Willie Mae Woods, a former presi­ dent of the Birthday Club, really surprised us when she visited with us on Splash Day. She now lives in Fredricksburg. We all enjoyed seeing this fine lady. Come back to see us soon!

On August 19, there will be a Blue Room Party from 4 to 9 p.m. with ·Cocktails, dinner and dancing to the Moonriders (mixed music). It will be $12.50 per person, and tickets are on sale now at the Lodge 88 office.

Youth Leader Suzanne Vrla an­ nounced that Walt Disney On Ice was enjoyed by the youth and, that in July, plans were made for a swim party.

Lodge 130 welcomes back to good health our treasurer, Brother Bob Oates, who had a lengthy stay in Humana Medical City. He is now home and doing well.

Brother Keith Shinn was elected as our new vice president replacing Brother David Hlavenka who stepped up to filJ the president's post. Brother Ken Vrla is also recovering well.

San Antonio at the Folklife Festival on August 3, 4 and 5th.

The July meeting was held on the 8th at the Sokol Athletic Center as usual.

Secretary, treasurer, and financial secretary reports were read and ap­ proved.

The Flag Day ceremony by the Fraternal Council was hosted by SPJST Lodge No. 84. The dinner and entertainment, which were presented by the host lodge's youth, were well accepted.

The report on the Fourth of July pic­ nic was given. In the future, each of the sponsoring organizations will be responsible for one of four categories: preparation, serving, set-up, cleanup,

and entertainment.

Responsibilities will rotate each year.

Beseda Director Martha Vrla con­ ducted our rehearsal after the meeting.

The youth club started practicing the Ceska Beseda, even though there are too few children to complete a circle.

On August 3, the group will dance at San Antonio Folklife three times: Friday (the 3rd) at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, (the 4th) al 4:30 p.m., and Sunday (the 5th) at 12:00 noon. We have also been invited to dance on the Belgian stage.

Our next meeting will be on August 12th at 4:00 p.m. We hope to see more of our members attend.

Lodge No. 155, Austin Reports

AUSTIN LODGE NO. 155 Deer Creek Members who miss our annual pic­ nics at Boriski's Deer Creek picnic grounds next to a large clear lake shaded by trees with a cool breeze regardless if the temperature is 101 degrees downtown failed to take ad­ vantage of this opportunity enjoying a wonderful afternoon and cookout. This year it was held June 2 and we had a good turnout. Out-of-town member Ginny (Prasatik's daughter) and Jay Domoff from Houston were present.

Another guest was Quimmer Williams.

Entertainment was domino games, volleyball, round rink playground equipment, swimming and raft on the lake. Others just enjoyed casual and fraternal conversation. We had lots of goodies to eat.

Ginny tried to show her expertise in managing a blown up boat with 2 pad­ dles, but to no avail, the current took her downstream pretty fast and several people came to her rescue! .

We held a short meeting. All officers were present 1\nd gave their reports.

San Angelo Lodge No. 160 Supports Community's Affairs Lodge 160, San Angelo sponsored a Wall Little League and a Wall PeeWee League baseball team this past season.

The Wall teams were very thankful for the SPJST sponsorship of their teams. This helped to pay for their in­ surance, equipment, and trophies that they received at the end of the season.

The Little League team was coached

by Danny Herrera and Terry Duncan.

The Peewee team was coached by Walter Holik and Leonard Jansa. Both teams had a good season and learned quite a bit about baseball, sportsman­ ship and teamwork.

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena Hosted Another Community Benefit Dear Brothers and Sisters: On behalf of the Pasadena Lodge No. 172, I'd like to say "Thanks" to all the members for your help, support, dona­ tion of pastries, etc. For the benefit for "The Rose Breast Imaging Center" held June 24, which was a great suc­ cess. The shrimp dinner was good, the Rose Staff and our members did a good job of cooking and serving the food, also thanks to the three bands that donated their music, the auc­ tioneers, and the youth club for pass­ ing out flyers.

This is another good example of fraternization, doing a goodjob for the community," and a needy cause, be­ cause we were able to raise $11,688.00 for the "Rose Breast Imaging Center."

Now for a special "Thanks" to Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sister Bobbye Johnson for doing such a good and splendid job of getting everything done, for working with Rose Director Anna Belle Baugus, and rest of the Staff, getting everything lined up for it was a smooth operation.

On June 27, we had our covered dish supper, and. lodge meeting. We had a good turnout even if we had a bad thunderstorm, We had some special guests; Brother Louis Hanus, District V director and his wife; Sister Marie

At 6:30 p.m., Brother Jerry Dressler, president, called the crowd to order, and asked Sister Tinnie Walla, lodge treasurer, to give the blessing. The food was really good and lots of choices. Thanks to all for the delicious food and fine turnout.

At 7:30 p.m. President Jerry Dressler called the lodge meeting to order.

Sister Bobbye Johnson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silent prayer for our deceased brothers and sisters.

At this time, President Jerry Dressler called on Brother Louis Hanus to in­ stall the newly-elected youth club of­ ficers.

Then.he called on Dr. Dixie Melillo, the founder of Rose, who thanked the lodge for the use of our hall, help, sup­ port, etc., and friendly reception they received from everyone. She praised Pasadena Lodge No. 172 for a splendid corporation, and presented a beautiful plaque to our lodge, also presented it to President Jerry Dressler and she also gave a letter to our lodge.

I was simply over­ whelmed by the response and I know that none of it would have been pos­ sible without the great people at the SPJST. Most especially, we are all grateful for the volunteers who so generously donated their time (and cakes) last Sunday. Since we are all novices at fund-raisers, it meant so much to.have experienced "pros" there to guide us through each step. We appreciate their help and patience.

Our best calculations are that we raised $11,688. Isn't that incredible?

We are so thankful and barring any catastrophes this money means that The Rose will be able to complete this year without going too far in the hole.

Occurrences At Lodge No. 183, Arlington Dear Lodge Members and Friends: A great number of things have taken place since my last letter and there are several things that will take place before the next one, so I will get right down to business.

Business is rather tough these days.

If a man does something wrong he gets fined. If he does something right he gets taxed.

On Friday, June 29th, we held our Family Social. The dinner consisted of some delicious barbecue purchased by the lodge. There were several other great covered dishes brought by the lovely ladies of the lodge. We had 23 individuals attend this gathering. We had a couple of tables playing "42" and a group of men were playing a card game. Several other members just enjoyed visiting and socializing.

Saturday evening, June 30th, saw the Solak Brothers Band from Ennis, Texas, at our lodge playing for our dance. We had a nice crowd of ap­ proximately 80 persons participating.

The lodge was cool, the music was ex­ cellent, and everyone danced and had a good time. Several other dances are scheduled for our lodge during the remainder of the summer. Please con­ sult the Calendar of Events in the back of the Vestnik or watch for an­ nouncements in my letters.

An officers' meeting was held on Monday evening, July 2nd. The main topic of business was the upcoming July 4th parade in Arlington. Most all of our preparations for this year's parade had been completed. Other items of business were discussed and business to be brought before the regular meeting was placed on the agenda. President Inez Greenlees pointed out to the officers present, that the air-conditioner in the kitchen had been replaced. Also, some smoke eaters had been installed in the hall to help remove smoke on game nights and dances. Both of these items had been brought up by motion and ap­ proved at one of our past monthly meetings. These will be positive addi­ tions to the lodge hall. Our officers' group had a little difference of opinion as to how we should begin this meet­ ing. Some oř us wanted a short prayer followed by the treasurer's report.

Others wanted the treasurer's report followed by a long prayer.

I want to send out a happy birthday to my mother-in-law, Mary Sill. She celebrated hers on July 3rd. My in­ laws stay active and have attended many of the functions held at our lodge. They have attended almost all of our Family Social Nights since. we began having them. Her son, Robert, says that even though her birthday is one day short of the 4th, she is still a real firecracker.

Mary and Charley Nemec celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The date was July 6th, and on July 7th their children and grandchildren gave them a golden wedding reception at Saint Monica's Catholic Church in Dallas.

They are members of Lodge 84, Dal­ las, Texas and also a cousin to Mary Sill. Happy Anniversary from all of us at Lodge 183. · On July 7th my in-laws, William and Mary Sill celebrated their 55th wed­ ding anniversary. Robert, Shelby and I got together with them and attended the Nemec's reception. Then we went to the Sill's house and played several games of "42." After that, we went out

to eat and to celebrate their anniversary. The waiters and waitresses sang a lively anniversary song to this couple with the marital longevity. Another Happy Anniversary to the Sill's from Lodge 183.

Marriage brings music into a man's life. He learns to play second fiddle.

After all the worry and anticipation, the Arlington July 4th Parade was a rousing success. All of our pre-planning helped our part of the parade to go smoothly. Inez went the night before and purchased all the necessary decorations for the auto, truck and trailer. Plus she bought extra flags and hats. Those of us who participated in the parade were at the lodge at 6:30 in the morning to help load up all of the required equipment while the band loaded their instruments. We drove to the parade staging grounds and began to decorate the vehicles. My daughter, Kelly, drew the posters for the vehicle doors. Janie Roznov, Laverne Gilbert, Stephanie Duron, Inez and myself did an excellent job decorating the vehicles and especially a great job on the trailer. Our unit in the parade was a real stand-out. One of the participants took pictures and I will try to include some with my next letter. Since we are a non-profit organization, we were not included in the judging for prizes, but I feel that we would have come away with one of the the top prizes if we had been allowed to compete.

At this point, I would like to thank the people who participated in making the SPJST unit in the July 4th parade a tremendous triumph. Those who I have already mentioned plus Ed and Dorothy Kral and Robert Sill from our lodge. I would really like to emphasize a thank you to certain friends of the lodge, namely, Mel and Laverne Gilbert and his brother, Bob. Mel supplied the convertible that we rode in and were able to show off the Czech costumes. Mel also supplied the truck to pull the trailer that carried the polka band. His son, Cecil, drove the convertible and Bob drove the pickup truck. Mel rode on the trailer and attended to the needs of the band while watching the generator that supplied power to the electrical equipment and the musical instruments. There is just no way to thank Mel Gilbert and his family enough.

Dan Horn, a recent member of our lodge, loaned us the trailer to use and decorate. Thank you, Dan. In my opinion, the most outstanding performance was turned in by the polka band that rode in the trailer.

Amid the heat and humidity, the band never missed a note. Their music was lively and you could see everyone get captivated by their spirited tunes.

Young and old began to clap and to keep time with the polka rhythm.

About half of the crowd along the way stood to give them an ovation. Lodge 183 truly owes sincere appreciation to Tim Mynarcik, Bobby Duron, Jr., and the other members of the Mynarcik Polka Band. This wonderful group donated half of their Independence Holiday to comply with our request.

They certainly did touch the crowd and liven them up on this hot sultry morning. On behalf of the entire mem­ bership of Lodge 183, I would like to say a sincere "Thank You" to the Mynarcik Polka Band for a superb and excellent job of playing music for the parade. You guys and dolls were the greatest!

Buddy Hrabal and Memory Lane played for our dance on Saturday eve­ ning, July 7th. There were several members of our lodge in attendance and a moderate crowd came to dance on this summer's evening. The band

· played its usual good quality of sounds and everyone danced and had a great time.

The monthly meeting of Lodge 183 was held on Sunday afternoon, July 8th. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. A carload of tourists stopped for gas at a service station located on a rural highway in the southern part of Texas.

Dear Campers, District I will be camping soon and I am sure all of you are looking forward to camp. Arrival time .is between 2 and 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 with departure at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 22nd.

We will be having special activities each night at camp including an Indoor Rodeo, a campfire and wiener roast and a party at the pool.

This year's theme is PIONEER DAYS so we will be doing things that center around pioneers. One of our crafts is basket weaving and we will also be painting T-shirts. This year we will be providing the T-shirts for you so you don't have to worry about bringing one of your own to decorate.

We also have ice cream making on the schedule.

Put a big smile on and we will see you at camp.

District VI YAD 'Schedule

From The Youth Leaders Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Members and Friends: The youth meeting was held July 1st with a fair attendance.

The youth club took cakes to West Rest Haven for thejr birthday party.

District III YAD was held June 24th at Lodge 84, Dallas. Kevin Dobecka received "Teenager of the Year" and third place in Foods. Tammi Dobecka received first place in sewing, third in Hobby Kits and Honorable Mention in Foods. Keith Hykel placed first in Foods, second in Hobby Kits and second in Construction Items. Celia Dobecka received Honorable Mention in Hobby Kits and also Honorable

Mention in Science and Education.

The club' s Poster placed second and Scrapbook received third place. The program was real nice and the food was good.

Next is District III camp beginning July 22 through 25 at Camp Val Verde. Bring your things for the craft that you are suppose to bring.

Our lodge annual picnic was held July 15th.

Our next meeting will be on Friday, August 3rd, so come to our meeting.

SPJST camp for our district was held June 3-6 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. Stephanie highlighted all the various activities the members were involved in.

Youth Achievement Day cards were handed out. Members are to ma.ke duplicates of cards and return at our next meeting on Sunday, July 8th.

Group Talent and Beseda practices will be held periodically from July 8 to July 29th.

Father's Day poems were read by Lanice and Michael Kaspar.

Contest winners were (5-7) Crystal Roye, 1st and Jason Kaspar, second. In ( 12-17) Craig Dorna.k, 1st and Lenice Kaspar, second.

Door prizes members donated were awarded. Lenice Kaspar was recog­ nized for her June birthday.

Seaton Youth Club Holds Monthly Meeting The Seaton Youth Club held their monthly meeting Sunday, July 1st at 2 p.m.

Vice President E.J. Pechal called the meeting to order. John Hoelsher led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes were read by our Secretary Melanie Koslovsky.

There were 31 members, 2 guests and 5 adults present.

Door prizes were won by Lori Kohutek and Laura Gibson. Birthdays in July are for Lori Greger, Diane Pavelka and Jacob Karnas.

Our social for July will be on the 19th. We will be going to Schlitter­ baun in New Braunfels.

We talked about camp, Beseda prac­ tice, District YAD and District II trip to Houston to Astroworld and Water­ world on August 25th.

ln Memoriam

Clarine Bliznak Chupick Born August 20, 1901 in Brenham, Texas to John Bliznak and Mary Foyt Bliznak, she spent her early years in the Caldwell-Snook area.

She attended what is now Southwest University in San Marcos for 2 years and taught in Needville.

Later she moved to Rosenberg, where she was a legal secretary for her uncle by marriage, the late Judge C.H. Chernosky. She then moved with the Chernosky family to Houston in the early 1920s where she met and married John F. Chupick in the Chernosky home on January 12, 1926.

At that lime her husband was in the land business in San Antonio. During the next few years, she lived in San Antonio, Dwbrosolski and Houston.

To this union one daughter Mary Fran­ ces was born.

In 1941 they moved to Fayetteville where John Chupick was secretary of the SPJST Supreme Lodge. He was ac­ tive in SPJST affairs. Then they moved to Temple when the Head­ quarters were transferred.

After her husband left the SPJST, they returned to Fayette County area, where she became active in Woman of Church in First Presbyterian Church and - Fayette County Hospital Auxiliary.

Clarine liked to travel and, among their travels, they visited Czechos­ lovakia twice to see their roots and visit relatives.

She moved to Weslaco in 1982 to be near her daughter. After her husband's death in 1983, she moved to John Knox Retirement Center in Weslaco, where she died June 17, 1990 at age 90.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Frances (Chupick) Bennett; son-in. law, Ballard Bennett and two grandsons, John Bennett of Weslaco and David M. Bennett of Dallas, all who are SPJST members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Wednes­ day, June 20 at 3 p.111. in First Pres­ byterian Church at La Grange, with Rev. Newton Cox, Pastor of First Pres­ byterian Church of La Grange officiat­ ing; and Rev. Frank McElroy of Lockhart assisting. Interment was in La Grange City Cemetery, La Grange, Texas.

Pallbearers were Walter Francis, Dr. Thomas Vogt, E. Floyd Phelps, Nor­ man Novosad and Adolph Matocha.

Serving as honorary pallbearers in­ cluded Dr. Ernest Krenek, Dr. Fojt Krenek, Vinc Balcar, Louis Svrcek, Arthur Foyt, Charlie Orsak and Brig.

Arrangements were under the direc­ tion of McCaleb Funeral Home, Wes­ laco, Texas.

Matthew was born November 22, 1984 in Dallas, the son of Joseph D. and Catherine Tenney Trojacek. He was reared in Ennis· where he attended the Tabernacle Baptist Church pre.­ school program. He played soccer for the Sting Rays. He was a member of the Sokol and SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Joe. D. Trojacek of Ennis; two sisters, Annie Marie Trojacek and Catherine Ann Trojacek, both of Ennis; his grandparents, Daniel Gordon Tenney and Mrs. Wesley J. Trojacek, both of Ennis.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Catholic Church in Fayetteville with Monsignor Ben Mazurkiewicz and Reverend Thomas Nitschke of­ ficiating and burial took place at the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Cmajdálka was a lifetime resi­ dent of Fayetteville. He was born January 11, 190 l in Fayetteville, the son of Charles H. and Bertha Knesek Cmajdálka and was united in marriage with Annie P. Polasek on October 21, 1930 in Fayetteville.

He was retired with 43 years of ser­ vice as a postal clerk. He was a mem­ ber of St. John's Catholic Church, KJT and SPJST. Mr. Cmajdalka was a member of SPJST Lodge No. l since July 14, 1929. He succeeded his father as presi­ dent and held that position for 42 years.

Mr. Cmajdalka was active in Lodge No. 1 until December 1989 when he retired. Mr. Cmajdálka was well known and a community leader for many years. He also was active in church affairs and presided over the St. John's Social Activities every Thursday for over 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Cmajdalka of Fayetteville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Char­ lene Wick of Hallettsville, Lillian and Clarence Krenek of Rockdale, Annette aad Robert Kovar of Fayetteville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lad E. and Shirley Cmajdalka of Dallas and Alois F. and Shirley Cmajdalka of Houston; three sisters, Olivia Peterson of Ar­ lington, Sidonia Benton and husband, Carl of Houston, Rosalie and her hus­ band, Milton Nonemacher of Pasadena; one brother, Arnold Cmaj­ dalka of Rosenberg; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

The ten-session course concentrates on language and grammar skills, Czech culture and history. No tuition is charged and a textbook is made available to students during the course.

Texas Czechs Endow UT Faculty Position ByKirby Moss American-Statesman Staff

Undergraduate degrees in Czech studies are extinct in America, except at the University of Texas, where 750,000 Czech neighbors are pouring in money to keep it and their culture alive.

"The endowment is a kind of guaran­ tee that (the Czechs') contributions to Texas survive," said Michael Katz, chairman of UT's Slavic languages department.

The endowment he speaks of is $500,000 donated this month by the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, a group formed more than 30 years ago to preserve Czech culture in the state through higher education. The money --- and its interest --- will ere­ ate a chair in Czech studies, enabling UT to hire and continue to pay a professor specializing in the field.

Why Czech studies have mostly died out on other campuses, but survived at UT, is not puzzling if you consider the 750,000 people who call themselves Texas Czechs, said Roger Kolar, chair­ man of the Czech foundation.

Czech families began coming to Texas in the 1840s, and wrote letters to relatives in the homeland about how wonderful it was. More families followed.

UT has taught the Czech language since 1915. At least a half dozen universities in the state offered courses in Czech studies in the 1970s, said ~olar, but de~lining enrollments and tight budgets ktlle~ them o~f.

Russian ts the first Slavic language taught at most . universities in the country, Katz said. But at UT, Rus­ sian, although now the largest Slavic program on campus, came after Czech. . The Czech studies program now is the only endowed chair in the department, Katz said. "We're kind of the weak man of Europe," Katz said about his department.

The money co1lectedby the foundation includes. contributions from more than 600 people and a $200,000 grant from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation.

"There is a growing concern among third-generation Czechs in Texas that their children are forgetting about Czech language and folklore", Katz said.

UT's Czech studies program is small.

One professor teaches a class of 1 O to 12 students each semester, primarily in Czech language. Other classes in Czech literature and history are listed in course books, but because of the program's current $30,000 a year budget, they are seldom taught. An un­ dergraduate degree in Czech studies is conferred only about once every other year at UT. Students in the program also travel each summer to Czechoslovakia to study and tour the country their ances­ tors migrated from, since no textbook or stories told by their grandparents can match the experience. The endowment will boost the program's annual budget to $100,000, Katz said, and

allow it to expand into Czech litera­ ture, culture and history.

Nancy Gay graduated from UT in 1987 with a rare degree in Czech studies. She studied Czech "mainly because my family is from CzechosIovakia."

A common question: What is she going to do with the degree? "I hope to be able to promote Czech culture and language in some way... and right now the possibilities are so open."

The first interest of people who .ga':e money to UT for the program ts m · preserving Texas Czech culture, but · Katz wants the prog~~m to grow ~d include Czech tradition that exists "before and after Texas Czech culture." . .

The role of the new Czech society m central Europe is fascinating, he. said.

Politics and economics are adding a new dimension. to Czech studies and could generate more interest.

Czech Cultural Program Deserves Public's Support Efforts to endow a Czech program at the University of Texas point to two things: the vindication of the relevance of subjects sometimes considered too archaic or staid and that it is possible to preserve a culture and language within the mainstream of U.S. society.

Texans of Czech descent are close to raising $1 million to fund the program, thanks to the Czech Educational Foun­ dation, which donated $500,000 last month to support the study of Czech culture and language.

A rapidly changing world has made anyone with a background in Czech studies a possibly valuable commodity as businesses and other groups seek to make the most of the changes sweep­ ing Eastern Europe.

At the same time that the modest program has trained some students who may find their educations much more valuable than perhaps anyone thought, it has helped continue the Czech traditions and cultures in Texas.

Some 750,000 Texans are of Czech background, and a drive through Hal­ lettsville, El Campo and Smithville will demonstrate that Czechs provide a vital part of the rich ethnic tapestry that is Texas. Depending on the time of day, a radio announcer speaking in Czech can greet a traveler in those close-knit communities. The Czechs retain their heritage while being part of the wider community that is Texas and the even wider one that is the United States.

A combination of the foundation's donation, matching funds from the university and other donations have brought the program to within reach­ ing distance of its goal. The program needs another $167,000 in private donations to reach the desired funding level. It is a program that deserves to succeed.

Given in marriage by her parents, the bride wore a matte taffeta gown with a beaded lace basque bodice, Ieg-o-mut­ ton sleeves with sequins and a bubble skirt that extended into a brush train.

A candy box bow accented the back V neckline. Her veil of bridal net was held by a band of white satin bows centered with pearls. She carried a cas­ cade bouquet of white roses, rosebu~s, mini carnations, lilies, stephanotis, blue rosebuds, baby's breath and greenery. It was tied with white lace and satin streamers.

Jackie Garner of Damon attended the bride as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Charlene Smith, Margaret Leopold and Lynette Linhart, sisters of the bride, Patsy Socha and Mona Dras­ tata, all of El Campo; Kim Dornak of Talton and Tessa Winzenried of Bay City, niece of the groom.

The bridal attendants wore royal blue matte taffeta bubble dresses with sweetheart necklines, puffed sleeves and candy box bows below the V back necklines. They wore halos of royal blue and light blue rosebuds with white baby's breath and royal blue rib­ bon in their hair. They carried nosegays of light blue alstroemeria, royal blue roses, rosebuds, mini mums, white stephanotís, baby's breath and greenery. .

Denise Leopold and Megan Smith, nieces of the bride, were the flower girls. Darin Leopold and Jason Smith, nephews of, the bride, were 'the ring bearers.

Ronnie Leopold of El Campo, brother-in-law of the bride, served as best man. Groomsmen were Doug Seaman of Wharton, brother of the groom; David Smith, brother-in-law of the bride, Glenn Stary, Doug Roberts and Garrett Tupa, all of El Campo; Ruben Gonzales, brother-in-law of the groom, and Brian Gonzales, nephew of the groom, both of Bay City.

The air is thick with acrid smoke that sputters from the stacks of small boiler stations and heating plants burning brown coal and liquid fuels.

Manufacturing sites scattered through­ out the city - Prague generates slightly more than 11 percent of the country's industrial production - pump sulfur di­ oxide (S02), nitrogen oxides and other toxins into the atmosphere; many of the smokestacks are designed to filter fly ash. but virtually 'none is equipped with scrubbers.

Farther south and miles out of sight, where the Vltava River begins its de­ scent on the city limits, trout fishermen cast their lines into waters prized for their purity. By the time the fish floated past the city's chemical. manufacturing and sewage plants and reached the zoo at the northern end of Prague. they would be unappealing even to hungry bears.

As in Bucharest. Warsaw and Buda­ pest. news that Czechoslovakia's capi­ tal is not just filthy, but teeming with tox­ ins hazardous to human health. has begun .to seep out of the bureaucratic monoliths that guarded the dirty secret for decades. Many Eastern Europeans argue the anti-Communist revolutions that swept through the region last fall were fueled as much by. disgust over unbreathable air and undrinkable water as they were by a political system run amok. ln Czechoslovakia. as facts about the Louis Kékes, devastated environment filter through the media and confirm what locals for decades could only suspect. a form of environmental hysteria has gripped cer­ tain regions of the country. Under Communist Party rule, no independent Czechoslovakian agency was designated to track and control the flood of hazardous wastes. Industry. in other words: had no place to turn. "Its that special socialist circle." said Dr. Miroslav Hatle. a member of the city planning board and an snvíronmental specialist. "a little like catch-žž."

As a result, Praque residents are ex· posed to a deadly daily cocktail of haz­ ardous wastes. The brew is strength­ ened by antiquated methods of burning solid and liquid fuels to generate heat.

Add nitrogen oxides. fly ash and other elements to the S02, particularly in cold winter months when there are inversions, and concentrations are exceeded by four to five times the na­ tional limit. Studies also have found el­ ements of heavy metals and arsenic in the atmosphere.

City water also teems with toxins. Ma­ jor wastewater purifying stations are se­ verely overloaded. and more than 12 percent of the sewage network is in "emergency condition." according to the city planning board. Septic tanks often drain directly into streams. A mammoth housing project on the city's northern edge dumps raw sewage directly into the Vltava: in dry periods. this waste lin­ gers on the surface. Sed;,-,;e,,, a.-,a:ysas from several streams off the river indi­ cate r.igh concentrations of nitrates and he&vy metals. particularly cadmium. that city officials suspect originate from in­ dustrial sites downstream.

Concentrations of lead. cadmium, ar­ senic, zinc and nickel in city soil are from one to 15 times the average concentra­ tion found in the Earth's crust. ln other parts of the country, more than half the agricultural soil is eroding.

Environment officials many re­ cently plucked from scientific labs and recruited to the bureaucracy - say they shiver at what they have discovered but refuse to despair.

"The first thing to do is to improve the laws and structure of the government," Moldan asserted. Experts are drafting Czechoslovakia's first umbrella law on hazardous waste, expected to initiate the "polluter-pays" principle now standard in the West. It also is expected to set standards for solid waste manage­ ment and establish guidelines to replace 23-year-old clean air laws.

Moldan said the most basic laws should be ready before national elec­ tions this month. "We need these laws very badly and very quickly," he noted.

"For a framework, we are looking at laws from Holland and the European Com­ munity in Brussels. But we hardly have enough people to study and compare the laws, and we are making them even before the general economic laws are ready." ..

"We need total restructurino of indus­ try," Moldan said, notinq that in the first half of the century, Czechoslovakia was one of Europe's strongest industrial pro­ ducers. "At this point, there is no single solution," he added. "Some plants must improve. Some must be shut down.

Some must be converted to other types of production."

Energy and electricity sources also must be transformed, for the sake of both efficiency and the environment. Re­ placing thousands of solid- and liquid­ fuel burning stations - many of them in treasured medieval buildings-with gas burners is a top priority.

Moldan and other politicians in the rul­ ing Civi,f;: Forum Party recognize the cost of these projects, in addition to finding the technology and know-how to initiate

Several officials pointed out that turn­ ing to the West for solutions is both tempting and dangerous, because it jeopardizes industries' independence.

Nonetheless, several joint ventures al­ ready have been established, particu­ larly with West German firms.

"We have been offered aid from many countries, but we are not completely ready to accept it, because we need to set our own priorities first," Moldan said.

"We're waiting out the making of private­ enterprise laws, to make sure we don't get conned."

Moldan added that such Band-Aids as scrubbers and treatment plants generally should be passed over for a focus on "sustainable development: This ap­ proach would be in contrast to the Soviet adage most Eastern Europeans swal­ lowed in full for decades - "Growth at all cost." The ministry plans to release a list of priority projects in late spring.

The city of Prague already has out­ lined projects needing immediate atten­ tion. City planner Hatle noted that, at least in the city's case, "it's not a ques­ tion of sophisticated technology. ln fact, it's the most basic stuff that can easily be obtained in the West that we are missing."

City plans include:

• A liquidation center, incineration plant and disposal site for hazardous wastes; • A sanitary landfill to replace the one expected to close in two years; • An incinerator for municipal solid waste, which already is under construc­ tion; • A shift in energy sources from solid (often low-grade brown coal from north­ ern Bohemia) and liquid fuels to gas, electric and central heating; • Use of catalvtic converters (most_ cars have a place for converters. which are installed only when a vehicle is slated for export); • A central wastewater treatment plant scheduled to open in 1999 at an estimated 5,500 million koruna (40 ko­ runa equal $1 ). The plan includes recon­ struction of the sewage system and sat­ ellite treatment plants; and • General reconstruction of historic city centers.

Implementation of these projects for Prague, as well as those envisioned for the rest oř the country, partiy depends on who lands in the presidential castle after spring elections. While the ruling Civic Forum Party is a strong favorite, compe­ tition is mounting, and virtually every party has taken on the cause of Czecho­ slovakia's devastated environment.

"All this environmental blah-blah."

Moldan said. "It's hard to tell who's really for it." Flourishing Green parties would tend to agree. But whatever their formula for political success, leaders throughout the former Soviet bloc tend to agree with the closing words of the Czech minister: "After 40 years of them, we are in a big mess."

Joe F. Mikolaj Memoirs 'Yes, my life is full of history. On December 21, 1901, Dr. Wm. Kroulik helped with my birth in the just - built two - story home of my grandparents, Frank and Mary Svajda, near Nelsonville, Austin County, Texas.

Many changes have happened in my life which I will try to relate.

I was only two years old when my grandfather gave up his life while remodeling a well for Frank and Frances Polcak (his daughter and my aunt).

My father and mother were both born in Czechoslovakia; my father near Udice and my mother, near Frydek - Mistek. They came separately by ship in 1884, my father at age 5 and my mother at age 2.

My grandmother, with four children, settled near Nelsonville, Texas. Grandfather George and Annie Mikolaj, with three children, settled near Fayetteville, Texas.

During the several weeks' trip over the Atlantic Ocean, one day a schoolof large fish were spotted at the side of the ship and all the passengers rushed to see them. My father overbalanced and, as he started falling overboard, luckilymy grandfather caught him by the ankle, saving him. · At an early age grandmother, Mary Blazek,was married to John Vasutfor some seven years at the time of his death. They had four children. Her brother, Joseph Blazek, and wife talked her in to going to America with them.

At Nelsonville she became acquainted with Frank Svajda and they married in 1885 at the Catholic Church in Industry, Texas. They were blessed with twelve children (twobaby girls died at birth and son, Willie, at age 15 from blood poison).

The rest of my uncles and aunts all got married and had families, all of them have passed away.

In 1958, my uncle, Vladimir, and I organized The Svajda Family Reunion and annually, we meet in the Industry Parish Hall. At the present time, my cousin, (dentist) Dr. Jerome Svajda of Bryan, Texas and his family are our leaders.

My grandparents, my parents, my wife's parents and I were all married in the Catholic Church at Industry, Texas.

I am very happy and proud of my Czech - Moravian heritage, however, the name Mikolaj is probably Polish, because in Polish Santa Claus is "Svatej Mikolaj."

I had two brothers and two sisters; only two of us are left, my sister, LillianColwell(the youngest) of Taylor and I (Joe Mikolaj, the oldest). What changes have taken place!

In the beginning of the 1900s, we had no electric lights, power, autos,

telephones, refrigeration, air traveling, etc. For lights, we used candles, kerosene lamps and lanterns.

Horses and mules provided travel by riding, wagon, buggy and surry. The surry was a two - seated carriage with a fringed flat top; only dirt roacs, which in rainy weather were almost impossible to travel.

The Iíndemann's Store, at Industry, catered to the farmers with a large long wagon loaded down with drygoods, groceries, etc., drawn by six horses or mules. (The sides of the wagon opened to make counters.)

If there was a shortage of money, chickens, ducks and geese would be taken and placed into cages on back of a wagon.

Soda crackers (about 4 - inch square) came in tin or wooden boxes about 12 x 12 x 18 inches.

Daily,my grandmother, would give us children the crackers, apples and popcorn. It was something like Cracker Jack and on the boxes was a picture of two monkeys.

A large upstairs room was used as a chapel in the home. My grandfather built an altar with a statute of the Blessed Mother as a centerpiece. At times, while weather permitted, a priest, from Sealy, would come to conduct Mass.

Uncle Frank or Uncle Joe, on horseback, would notify the members of the parish that a Holy Mass would be held at the Svajda's home.

There were no telephones at that time. Large wood cabinet wall telephones were later installed which had a crank on the side. Every member's home had a different ring; short, long and combination of both, as the crank was rotated; no private lines, so anyone picking up the receiver, could listen in on your conversation.

On the wall of the living room, just belowthe chapel room, were two large cold - framed pictures of Franz Joseph and his Queen, the rulers of Austria Hungary (Czechoslovakia) at that time.

Butcher Clubs were popular in those days. Once - a - month, a member would butcher a beef and members came to get certain parts of the meat.

Recordswere kept and all members in time would receive all the parts.

Since there were no refrigerators, all perishable foods were placed into containers and · lowered down into a well; then came about a three - shelf metal stand, the top was a tray with water that wouldsaturate a sheet - like cloth around the stand of shelves for food.

The first autos were the Model "T" Ford cars which cost in the $600range and Chevrolet 490 Model; joke of that car was -- "Four days on the road and 90 days in repair shop;" usually, a blacksmith shop. They also had install­ ed the first - hand operated gasoline pumps. ln the horse era it took us all day in the surry to make it to grandfather · Mikolaj's at Fayetteville. A large lap robe was used for cover. Usually during vegetation times, the horses would have problems.

The price of cotton was 5 cents per pound in the early 1900s so in 1908, a good friend encouraged my parents to move to Taylorwhere my father could find work.

He worked a short time at an oil mill, then got a better job in Keller's and Bohl's sodawater factory.

Later on, my father bought out Mr. Keller's one - half interest, and still later on, bought out Mr. Bohl's. (At the time we used thick glass chubby bottles that had permanent wire and

rubber washer stoppers. With a hand and footoperated machine, the bottles were filled and the stopper would be pulled up to seal. To open, the bottles were usually hit against the counter making a pop sound; thus · came the nickname, sodapop.)

Taylorhad nineteen saloons and we supplied them with mixers such as lithia Water, Celery Flip, Seltzer Water, plus many flavors of sodawater like strawberry, lemon orange, cherry, cream, sarsaparilla, iron brew and coca - cola.

On July 1, 2, 3 and 4, big celebrations were held at the fairgrounds. We worked day and night to supply them with sodawater.

I remember when the first airship came to the fairgrounds. A man seated on an open space would fly the ship in a large circle and land again.

My wife, Lillie Janovsky, was also born at Nelsonville a short distance from the Svajda's home. After a four year courtship, we were married in the Catholic Church in Industry, Texas.

After fifty - nine years of a happy marriage, Ilost her in 1981.I continue living in the same home in Austin, Texas.

From 1925 to 1927, I worked with the engineering department· of The Texas Power and light Company.

Then I had a music and appliance store.

I also had a nine - piece Czech orchestra playing over radio stations in Waco, Taylor and Austin. We even played for dances, picnics, political gatherings, etc.

We disbanded in 1941 when I accepted management for the forms and supplies department of oil and gas divisions of the Railroad Commission in Austin. After twenty - eight years, I retired in 1968.

In Taylor, I was a member and secretary of the Volunteer Fire Department.

In 1935, I helped organize the Central Texas District Firemen's Associationcomposed of twenty - five counties. I was their secretary for forty - one years.

I am a member of The Knights of Columbus since 1920, a member of SPJST, KJT, Ethnic Society and The Czech Club.

I am delighted that my niece, RebeccaMikolaj,is Miss Burleson and will compete for Miss Texas title in July.

I try to live a useful and happy life. I had many requests to write about these memoirs of my life. I hope some of the readers will enjoy and benefit from them.

EINSTEIN V PRAZE

Dalším zajímavým Einsteinovým pražským přítelem byl profesor indické filologie Moritz Winternitz, s nímž pro změnu zasedebatoval o literatuře. Winternitzova sestřenice byla učitelkou hudby a spolu s Einsteinem si čas­ to ráda zahrála a přitom kritizovala jeho drobné muzikantské prohřešky.

Prahapro Einsteina nebyla jen místem vě­ decké práce, přednášek a návštěv, ale také procházek. Byla tolik jiná než všechna měs­ ta, která až doposud poznal! Uchvátil ho Kar­ lův most se svými barokními sochami, po­ hled na Pražskýhrad z nábřeží, zelený masív Petřína, kouzlo uliček Starého Města a po­ chopitelně ho velice zaujal náhrobní kámen slavného astronoma Tychona de Brahe v Týnském chrámu. Právě zájem o dva vý­ znamné renesančníastronomy, kteří v rudol­ fínské době působili v Praze Tychona de Brahea Johanna Keplera ho patrně sezná­ mil s poštovním úředníkem a spisovatelem Maxem Brodem, který právě tehdy psal ro­ mán ,,VykoupeníTychona de Brahe". Jejich sblížení vedlo k dlouholetému přátelství a Brod dokonce ve svém románu vtiskl Jo­ hannu Keplerovi charakteristické rysy Ein­ steinovy - lhostejnost k životnímu prospě­ chu a pozemskýmradostem, zato neutucha­ jící radost z hledánívědecké pravdy.

Největšífyzik dvacátého století Albert Ein­ stein nežil v Prazedlouho. Jeho pobyt v čes­ ké metropoli je vymezen daty duben 1911 a červenec1912. Přes značnoukrátkost je to pobyt velice významný.Vždyť jak sám vědec ve své předmluvě k českému vydání ,,Theo­ rie relativity_speciálníi obecné" z roku 1923 připomíná, Cechy jsou zemí, ,,v níž nalezl jsem soustředění nutné k tomu, abych zá­ kladní myšlenku obecné theorie relativity, kterou jsem pojal již r. 1908,ponenáhlupřio­ díval určitější formou". Mimochodem z jede­ nácti studií, jež v Prazetehdy sepsal, se je­ nom pět netýkalo teorie relativity.

Začněmevšak od začátku. Pražskáuniver­ zita, tehdy Karlo-Ferdinandova,byla od roku 1882rozdělenana dvě samostatnéškoly, jed­ nu s českým a druhou s německýmvyučova­ cím jazykem. V čele německé univerzitv stál jako rektor významnýfyzik a filozof profesor Ernst Mach. Ano právě ten, .jehožjméno ne­ se číslo udávající v aerodynamice poměr rychlosti proudění tekutin k rychlosti zvuku v témže místě a v letectví poměry rychlosti letu k rychlosti zvuku. Není pochyb, že Ernst Mach znal práce tehdy teprve jedenatřiceti­ letého, ale už proslulého fyzika Alberta Ein­ steina, který působil ve švýcarském Cury­ chu. A tak nenídivu, že mu v roce 1910nabídl účast v konkursu na uvolněné místo profeso­ ra fyziky německé pražské univerzity. Z kon­ kursu nakonec sešlo, neboť druhý kandidát GustavJaumanz Vysokého učenítechnické­ ho v Brně svou účast odřekl, protože se cítil uražen,že jako rakouský občan byl na kandi­ dátní listině zařazenna druhém místě.

Po pravdě řečeno, Einsteinovi ani jeho že­ ně Milevě se do Prahynechtělo. Ale vzrůsta­ jící existenční starosti (v roce 1910se mu na­ rodil nejmladší syn Eduard) ho nakonec do­ nutily dát přednost nabízenémuprofesorské­ mu platu před prostředím, na něž byl zvyklý, a na jaře 1911 se odstěhoval do Prahy.Bydlel na Smíchověv Lesnické ulici, v tehdy novém secesním činžovním domě, na němž je dnes umístěna pamětní deska s jeho bustou od akademického sochaře M. Bendy. Jeho pra­ covištěm byl univerzitní ústav teoretické fy­ ziky na druhé straně Vltavy ve Viničné,ulici.

Sám později rád vzpomínal na jeho ,,tiché místnosti" a na pracovnu s výhledem na ka­ mennou zeď vedlejších Kateřinek. Svým žá­ kům prý dávaltakřka vesměs špatné známky a ještě k nim připisoval jízlivé glosy.

Prvnípovinností nového profesora bylo vy­ konat předepsanýpočet návštěv u svých uni­ verzitních kolegů. Prý jich bylo téměř čtyři­ cet. Albert Einstein se svým odporem k for­ mální etiketě je určitě všechny nezvládl. Ze svých kolegů se nejvíce sblížil s matemati­ kem Georgem Pickem a je pravděpodobné, že právědiskuse s ním mu pomohly překonat obtíže související s matematickým aparátem jeho obecné teorie relativity. Ostatně neho­ vořili spolu jen o matematice a fyzice. Pick, podobně jako Einstein, vášnivě rád hrál na housle, a tak není divu, že spolu často muzi­ círovali jen pro vlastní potěšeni.

Max Brod byl nejbližším přítelem slavného spisovatele FranzeKafky, který tehdy praco­ val v Dělnické úrazové pojišťovně v ulici Na poříčí a po nocích psal povídky Ortel a Pro­ měna. Nemusíme určitě pochybovat o tom, že dva géniové dvacátého století Einstein a Kafka - si byli přinejmenším představeni.

Oba měli i v lecčems shodnou povahu. Na jedné straně bývali respektováni jako vtipní a zábavní společníci, na druhé straně však byli velice skromní a plaší, libující si v samo­ tě. Oba židovští intelektuálové vyhledávali prostředí tichých pražských kaváren, kde se tehdy mluvilo převážně německy. Ale zvída­ vému Einsteinovi zřejmě neunikly ani praž­ ské české pivnice. Právě zážitky z Prahy mu asi později dovolily při populární formulaci přirovnat světelná kvanta k půllitrům - ne­ dělitelným kvantům, jimiž se projevuje moře piva.

V roce 1912 obdržel Einstein nabídku vést katedru teoretické fyziky na curyšské poly­ technice, kde kdysi sám studoval a on tuto nabídku ze svého starého působiště s vděč­ ností přijal. Ostatně i jeho žena Mileva na něj naléhala, aby se vrátili do Svýcarska. A tak po dvou letech geniální fyzik opouští Prahu a s roztržitostí sobě vlastní o tom zapomene napsat zprávu na rakouské ministerstvo osvěty do Vídně,což tamější byrokraty poně­ kud popudilo. Albert Einstein tak po několi­ kerém upomínáníučinil dodatečně, v té době už jako každoroční kandidát na udělení No­ belovy ceny.

Unido studentům ''Společný program Československa s Organizací spojených národů pro průmyslový rozvoj - UNIDO zahájil činnost v Západočeském kraji v roce 1978, protože je zde široce rozvinutý průmysl zpracovávající nemetalické

suroviny," vysvětlil inženýr Zdenek Engelthaler, vedoucí UNIDO-Čs. společného programu se sídlem v Plzni. "Máme kontakty s více než dvěma sty organizacemi v 82 rozvojových zemích. Ve spolupráci s čs. závody na výrobu porcelánu, keramiky, dlaždic, vápna, cementu, cihel, skla atd. pořádáme pro odborníky z těchto zemí semináře, setkání expertů, odborné stáže, testu­ jeme suroviny a poskytujeme technickou pomoc prostřednictvím čs. expertů nejen v oboru nemetalických surovin, ale také v jejich využití v zemědělství a při ochraně životního prostředí.

Vydáváme odborné publikace, natáčíme audiovizuální pro­ gramy a od r. 1987 zde máme pobočku databanky INTIB (Industrial and Technological Information Bank) z ústředí UNIDO ve Vídni, která zajišťu­ je program řízení a úspor energie v průmyslu a předávání technických in­ formací."

Během přednášky a besedy u kulatého stolu informoval inženýr Engelthaler letos v březnu právě v Plzni o činnosti UNIDO i UNIDO-Čs. společného programu 25 mladých lidí ze 13 zemí (Afghánistán, Angola, Benin, Bolívie, Etiopie, Kolumbie, Kuba, Mozambik, Nikaragua, Panama, Peru, Sudán, Zimbabwe), kteří přijeli na dvoudenní odborný seminář. Tito mladí cizinci studují v Praze na Vysoké škole chemickotechnologické a na Institutu tropického a subtropického zemědělství. Účastníci semináře viděli největší kaolinový důl v Evropě u Horní Břízy, nedaleký závod na úpravu kaolinu, závod na výrobu dlaždic a keramických cihel a navštívili také ne­ jznámější čs. pivovar v Plzni Plzeňský prazdroj (Pilsner Urquell). Studenti se seznámili i s činností pobočky INTIB, a získali další znalosti o Českosloven­ sku i o jeho spolupráci s UNIDO. (Dáňa Eliášková Československo 90)

Sešel se na Hradě s prezidentem Václavem Havlem, sledoval zasedání koordinačního výboru Československého olympijského výboru, poté jednal s premiérem Mariánem Čalfou. Přijel i do Sportovní haly na finále mistrovství světa házenkářů, kde se před začátkem utkání sešel s novináři.

"Vím, že v této zemi probíhají velice důležité změny nejen v politickém životě, ale i v sportu. Jedním z cílů mé návštěvy je, aby cesta přeměn právě v této oblasti proběhla pozitivním způsobem. Při setkání s nejvyššími československými představiteli jsem zdůraznil, aby se tak dělo nejen ve vrcholovém, ale i v masovém sportu," řekl J.A. Samaranch na úvod.

Jak se podle vás, pane předsedo, dotýkají změny ve východní Evropě sportů? "Pokud jde o situaci v NDR a NSR, to je politický problém a jeho vyřešení záleží především na Němcích.

Když bude jeden stát, logicky bude i jeden národní olympijský výbor. Se zájmem sleduji i vývoj v sovětských pobaltských republikách. Domnívám se však, že sport by neměl předbíhat politiku."

Byl jste velkým obdovivatelem Čekoslovenských spartakiád. Jak jste přijal zprávu o zrušení Spartakiády plánované na červen 1990?

"Přiznám se, že jsem z toho byl smutný. Stále však chovám naději, že tato velkolepá podívaná najde po jistém čase své obrození.

Chapu pohnutky, které vedly k tomuto kroku.

Doporučuji vám však nenechat zaniknout tradici hromadných vystoupení, která je v Československu slavná a bohatá."

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the čárka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, ď, ť, g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the háček or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s-š, c-č, z-ž, r-ř As indicated previously, the follow­ ing are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the plt Bit sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or ý, thusly: kdyby (byl) chytrý týden kytice žádný rytíř hybny The soft consonants are ď, ť, ň, ž, š, č, ř, and also c and j. If these are followed by the ee (bee, see) sound, the sound must be spelled with an i or i, thusly: dívat šíti ticho číslo ničitel řízek živý cizinec Jiskra Words with i or í in their root are in the vast majority.

The "neutral" consonants b, p, v, f, m, l, s, and z, are followed by either i, í, or y, ý, according to their origin or derivation.

When you add a prefix before words like účel the long ú is retained: bezúčelný.

USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English.

Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963.

Včera byla středa, 14, července 1963.

Consequently, days of the week and month ·are NOT . capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of per­ sons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations) titles of books, films, etc. take capitals.

Ex.: Karel Dvořák, Wilsonovo nádraží, Dunaj, Angličan, Čechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodaná nevěsta", etc., and Naše římsko-katolická cirkev; Veliká slovanská podporujíci jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vám, Váš: Ty, Tvůj, Tobě. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vás, Vám, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are ad­ dressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste včera jeli do města.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do města. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun já is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Mám česku ženu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvíme česky. (We speak Czech).

-before and after an adjective clause: Všechen cukr, všechna káva.

-before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile mě uviděl, šel pryč Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec řekl synovi: "Pokračuj a uč se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation ~arks-" ".
