Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST does require its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to retain in active status.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Hello Again!

I'm writing about our lodge meeting which was held Sunday, June 3, 1990 at 1 p.m. The opening of our meeting was by President Johnnie Krizan. First, he sent thanks to Sister Barbara Hykel for conducting the last monthly meeting for him.

The Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto were led by Tammi Dobecka and the membership. All remained standing · to observe a moment of silence for our departed member, Brother Walter Krizan of Waco. We extend our sympathy to the family.

Sister Peggy Dobecka read the minutes of our last meeting in absence of Sister Barbara Hykel. After one correction, the minutes were accepted as 'given. There was no treasurer's report.

Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report. He also read the names of our recently new members, namely, James M. Plavalsky, Zachary Krizan and one additional policy on Richard W. Schroeder. They were voted on and aaccepted. We welcome them and hope they will come and visit our socials and meetings.

A sympathy card was sent to the Walter Krizan family.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported on her youth club. They made some gifts for Father's Day which were pencilholders and one stem of red carnation that was passed out to the fathers at our last meeting for Father' s Day. Board of Trustees Chairman George Straten reported on the proceedings of our last board meeting that was a good report which all members for the picnic Committee were willing to help in their appointed positions. As always, we will need lots and lots of help preparing the day before and during the day of July 15th picnic. All the help is always appreciated. They are inviting all of the members and friends to come out and celebrate with us.

The kitchen committee will start serving at 11 :30 a.m. until?? (that good old country home-style popular fried chicken and sausage with all the good trimmings), plus a different variety of home-baked sweets, tea or coffee. We hope you can come eat with us or take your plate(s) home.

We will also have games and auction beginning at 2 p.m.

We hope to see some of the Home Office personnel, District III personnel and the other lodges' members in this area; all are cordially invited through this paper and writing.

A donation was given from our lodge to the KC Picnic which was held, recently.

It was time for door prize drawing and the door prize winner was Josie Mae Straten; the other monthly progressive prize drawings included: First $10--M. Pavelka, second $10-Jimmy Uptmore.

The other prizes donated by some of our members were George and Josie Mae Straten, the Robert Dobecka family, Willie Mae Schuetz, the Cyrill Svrceks, the Henry Matuses, Joseph

Krizan, the Youth Club, the Ruth Krizan and Bobby Dobecka families.

The lucky fathers receiving gifts in their honor were Edward Hykel, Robert Dobecka, Cyrill Svrcek, George Straten, Joseph Krizan, Henry Matus and Bobby Dobecka.

Our next board meeting will be June 29 at 8 p.m.; Lodge 6 meeting July 1 at 1 p.m. Dinner will be served before our meeting; be sure that all of you come for final arrangements for our annual picnic.

Lodge No.15, Buckholts Vice President Kathleen Jurca called the meeting to order on June 10th. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

There were 12 members and 4 visitors present.

The minutes were approved as read.

There were still some members on the sick list, namely, Mrs. Nora Matcek and Anton Svetlik. We hope both are better.

The turnout for the Tarok Tournament, was a great success with 56 players.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone (Flag Hall) Dear Readers: The June meeting was called to order

by President Laverne Cabla. All officers and board members were present.

Members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member Ed Jecmenek.

Members on the sick list are Laura Schneider and Joe Schneider.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Baker and their children on a new arrival, Jimmy Joe Baker.

Members celebrating birthdays in June are Andy Baker, Vlasta Marek and Terry Coots.

We had a few visitors at our meeting, we want to thank you for coming and hope to see you again; they were SL President Howard Leshikar, SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and SYD Claudette Reese.

The minutes of our May meeting were read and approved. Reports were given by chairmen of the various committees.

Louise Zavodny gave the board report. It was stated that Youth Leader Rose Harvell has asked to resign her position. Anyone interested should be at the next meeting if they would like to become youth leader. Louise also discussed with members that dimmer lights will be put in the Youth Room; Jeffery Mikeska will do the work.

President LaVeme Cabla suggested that the lodge donate $100 to each youth club member graduating from high school, the board members were asked to come up with some guidelines for each member to go by to be qualified for the money.

A thank you was extended to Joe Baker and Louise Zavodny for their efforts in cleaning and waxing the floors.

SYD Claudette Reese installed the 1990 Youth Club officers. They are President--Carl Macek, Vice President--Danny Baker, Secretary and Reporter--Melanie Zavodny, and Treasurer--Jennifer Ashcraft. Congratulations to the youth, we hope you will continue to be faithful members for many years from now.

New members accepted at our meeting were Lisa Kay Spanhel, Tonya Ann Spanhel and Sherry Rene Tyroch; we hope to see you at our lodge functions, soon.

Youth report was given by Rose Harvell.

I would like to thank Brother I Howard Leshikar and Brother Leonard Mikeska for saying a few words at our . meeting, it's good to know you are both close by when we need the encouragement and help. Thanks, again, for coming and taking the time out to visit us.

Margaret Mikeska had read a few changes in prices concerning the rent of our hall, the members discussed the issues and a motion was made and seconded to have the issue announced in the Vestnik and voted on at our next meeting. We will be voting on raising prices of our hall rent.

The meeting was then adjourned, door prize winners were Nancy Posvar, Wilbert Mikeska and Carol Chervenka.

Our next meeting date is July 15 at 2 p.m. We will be honoring our 50-year members this day. Please try and come to this meeting and help us honor these people; a light meal will be served after our meeting. Members are asked to bring a dessert. See you then.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: Here it is the end of June and time, again, for a monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonáš. Since July 4th, our nation's major holiday, falls on Wednesday this year, the first Sunday schedule will be followed and this happens to be the 1st. It is with much hope that there will be a good attendance at this meeting being it is summer, it is hot, vacations are being taken, etc. The meeting will start at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. As for the agenda, it will be open within reason and will follow the regular "Order of Business."

A light luncheon and fraternal hour will convene after the adjournment of our business meeting.

The June 3rd monthly meeting convened with a less than desirable quorum present. All reports and business were handled in record time. With.

There was more than enough food on the buffet table for everyone present.

The time went by quickly while members enjoyed each other's company.

It seems this writer has to re-define things and this time it is the word "meeting." Now, he could use several dictionaries, write their definitions and stop there with everything written being true and correct. In our organizational sense, however, this word "meeting" takes on a new meaning. In years past, way before "Direct Billing," the prime purpose of the local lodge monthly meeting was to have set

time of the month whereby members could pay their policy premiums and local dues (if any). The second most purpose was to have these already present members to stay for the meeting and deliberate the course of action a local lodge could take on a given situation. The third day and, by far, NOT the least important purpose was a once-a-month gathering of .fellow travelers whose "Mother Tongue" was the same and whose thoughts and ideas were similar. Other than church, many did not see each other on a regular basis for the work day started at first light or before and ended thirty minutes after dark ( or as this writer calls it "Dark: 30") or longer. The chance to visit was limited. Today, with the advent of the automobile, TV, telephone, 2-way radios in farm machinery, etc., things have changed and, to many, the local lodge monthly meeting is a bother and a bore. Although there are dues to be collected, in many cases, the monthly local lodge meeting is still needed to help keep things in order and going with the idea to keep the members' "HANDS ON," on the day-to-day operation of the lodge. This is, especially true where many operations are left to the respectul committees. Many times, the committees CANNOT do things without membership approval and the warm bodies present in a meeting help to deliberate a course of action such as to elect officers. Also, there, is the fellowship with one's fellow members who allows one to set down, visit and exchange ideas and points of view on deferent subjects. The whole business of the meeting and fellowship hour helps one break away from the pattern of day-to-day living. Sometimes, when one may have a problem, this brake from the regular may help find a solution to the question at hand. Even there is a chance that someone attending may be able to solve the problem. So, today's meetings must not and/or cannot be dry, long torturous ordeals but short to the point with plenty of time to visit. This is the hope of the present officers of Lodge Karel Jon~š. This writer asks that members take the time to attend these meetings for who knows, one may learn something one may not know. Enough said in this edifice.

On another subject: At this time a tentative date has been set for the Czech National Cemetery Association Fall semi-annual business meeting and election of officers. It will be held on the third Sunday in September, the 16th, at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall of Lodge Karel Jonáa .This date is not final because there could be an event with greater priority which may take place on the same or previous Sunday that could cause a conflict and a change would be necessary.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton The SPJST Lodge .if.7 meeting was called to order by President George Pavelka on Friday, June 8, 1990 at 7:00 p.m., honoring all fathers on Father's Day. Flag Bearers E.J. Pechal and Gary Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the membership in the pledge to the flag, and all remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed sister, Ella Bartek. May she rest in peace.

Take An Active Part In Your Local Lodge Affairs

Lodge No. 81 held its regular month­ ly meeting on Tuesday, June 12, 1990 at 7:00 p.m. with an attendance of twenty members and guests. President Adolph Macha called the meeting to order. All officers were present for roll call.

Following the· Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, led by Sister Mary Werner, we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our two departed members, Sisters Ruby Kuban and Clara Macha. Sincere sympathy is ex­ tended to their families. May they rest in peace.

Our special guests for the meeting were Evelyn Mikeska, District V presí-

dent, our District V' Director Louis Hanus and Mrs. Oleta Hanus. We ap­ preciate your personal visits to our meetings and look forward to seeing you, again.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the May meeting. They were approved as read. She also presented the financial report and read thank you notes from Sister Vlasta Nowotny and three of the Lodge No. 81 scholarship recipients.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's financial report was also approved as read. Sister Kuykendall reported that "get well" cards had been sent to mem­ bers Frank Triska and Margaret Pol­ lock.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Wal­ zel presented his monthly report detail­ ing all the activities, expenses and income of the Special Fund. His report was also accepted as read.

Under unfinished business, members voted to make a monetary donation to a project in Fort Bend County being sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This memorial would include wall space listing the names of all Fort Bend County service men and women killed in World War I through the recent wars to the present time.

Members also discussed and then voted to abandon the summer meeting schedule and, hereafter, hold all regular monthly lodge meetings at 12:00 noon on the third Sunday of each month year round, therefore, the next regular meeting will be held on Sunday, July 15, 1990 at 12:00 noon.

Special guests for the July 15 meet­ ing will be the four scholarship recipients from Needville High School, and their immediate families.

Activities will begin with dinner at 12:00 noon. The lodge will furnish the meat, and the good sisters will bring a covered dish of salad, vegetable, or

On July 21 -- Princess Dance with music by Mynarcik's August 3 -- On a Friday "Young at Heart" is the name for this dance-va '50s and '60s party, a juke box will play your favorite dance numbers; ad­ mission, $5 per person. There will be games for the children as well as cookies and punch.

August 4 -- Dance to the Czech Mates August 18 -- Sulak Brothers will be playing September 9 -- Our Czechfest, 11 :30 to 8:00 p.m, with a FREE dance from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Ennis Brass will play.

Donations are now being accepted for this fund-raiser. Sister Salac 3525295 is the number to call.

Our lodge looks so nice (new paint and wall paper) for the places. Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladník donated the many gallons of paint. When my daughter was a little girl, she broke one of my best china plates and, of course, l was devastated. Ar­ lene looked at me real sad, but confi­ dent and said, "Daddy can fix it." I didn't scold her, instead I loved her.

'Mrs. Frances Dvorak, who lives in Norman, Oklahoma also at times with her daughter in McKinney, Texas, wrote a sweet letter to tell me how she enjoys reading all the news in Houston about the people .she's acquainted with. I wish I could see the quilt blocks you are making.

We are so glad that our members, who were in surgery, have all recuperated and are gradually coming back to all the activities. Lydia Marsh and Franklin Bravenec are back per­ forming their duties. Also we were surprised to see Willie Mae Stang; however, she's still having some weak times. Richard Dixon is in the hospital with a stroke. Hope he'll be O.K. soon.

Dorothy Fabrygel lost her father, Mr. Lucas, this week; you have our sym­ pathy.

I was also notified that Noble Keat­ ing was in the hospital but is home now. Take care Phillip Noble! Kay will get you well, again!

Our dear friend, Frank Sebek, was hospitalized several weeks ago-v-the first time in his 75 years. He should be grateful for such good health for so long. He's at home doing fine, but has to have his tonsils removed.

Harley Cox, the entertainment com­ mittee chairman, informed me at the monthly meeting that he and his com­ mittee have done very good so far this year. Saturday, June 30, Jack Melick will play. It's a Big Band Music. (The Piano Man.) Don't miss ít=come and listen, if you can't dance.

On Saturday, July 28--We have another Big Battle Dance (Polka) with the Texas Dutchmen and the Central Sounds. That will be a sell-out, so hurry and get your reservations made.

We also had a very, very sad thing to happen, again, to a family who had such a tragedy about 16 months ago, when Larry Reibenstein lost his wife, Peggy, and an infant son, with husband and 3 small children surviving. On June 12, Larry decided to take his family on a vacation to Florida. In Mississippi, they were in a terrible ac­ cident, and one of his children (Ryan, 7 years) got killed and the father was severely hurt, but is out of the hospital and came home with the body of his child; also his two surviving children, Matthew and Ashley.

Other survivors were grandparents J.D. and Wanda Reibenstein, Henry and Gloria Gerhart; great­ grandparents, Lydia Mrnustik:, Arno and Zadie Reibenstein of Sealy; also aunts, Cindy Reibenstein and Glenna Gerhart and Uncle Henry E. Gerhart, Jr. plus many more relatives.

The funeral was held at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, with Rev. Godfrey Hubert and Dr. Donald L. Goodson officiating at 1 O a.m. Saturday, June 16th.

Interment was in the Memorial Oaks Cemetery. The Lawrence (Larry) Reibenstein family are all members of Lodge 88.

The membership extends their deepest sympathy.

Director Hanus informed us of the progress being made toward the en­ dowment of a Czech Chair at the University of Texas (Austin). He also reported that he was happy to be present at Needville High School in late May to participate in the presenta­ tion of SPJST scholarships.

Sister Mikeska presented a corsage to Lodge 81 Fraternalist of the Year Sister Benita Walzel, because Benita had been unable to attend the recent spring District V meeting. Sister Mikeska also reminded us of our up­ coming fall District V meeting in Dan­ bury in September.

Door prizes for the evening were won by Willie Mae Kuykendall, Dar­ lene Blinka, Benita Walzel and Mary Werner.

Our area is now besieged by extreme heat and drought, causing damage to corn and maize crops, as well as home gardens.

Sheryl Macha, daughter of Adolph and Delores Macha, was recently named to the Dean's Honor List at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Congratulations, Sheryl!

Sister Vlasta Nowotny was one of the models in the recent 'Fashion in Cotton' style show presented by the Tri-County Cotton Wives Association in Rosenberg.

Young member, Audie Wright, Jr., finished second grade at the Church of Living Waters School in Rosenberg.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury President Lonnie Lostak called the June 12 meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 to order and led the members in the recitation of the SPJST Motto.

Secretary Lorenda Baldwin read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp read correspondence and gave her report, and the financial report was presented

by Treasurer Eloise Lostak.

President Lostak welcomed District V President Evelyn Mikeska, to the meeting, and plans were made for rep­ resentatives of Lodge 139 to meet with District V officers to plan the Septem­ ber Family Day which will be hosted

by Lodge 139.

It was voted to make a $500 donation to the Danbury Volunteer Fire Depart­ ment at its annual barbecue and fund raiser at the end of the month.

President Lostak announced he had attended the Danbury High School Honors Award assembly at which time he presented scholarships to two lodge graduating members, namely, Alicia Filipp and Jason Filipp.

There being no other business, the meeting adjourned for a social and a birthday celebration for two of our young members, namely, Libba Lostak who was nine, and Wesley Baldwin who was six.

Lodge No. 142, Houston On Sunday, June 10, 1990 our monthly meeting was called to order

by Vice President Keith Kieschnick due to the absence of President Dennis Hermís, who was on vacation.

We had 54 members and guests who stood to recite the Pledge of Al­ legiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Sister Agnes Becker. May she rest in peace.

Nelson Jochen was appointed to act as vice president for this meeting.

Roll call of officers and board mem­ bers showed the following to be ab­ sence, namely, Dennis Hermis, Amanda Hermis, Robert Kieschnick, Martin Kieschnick and Rosie Schilhab.

Board of Trustees and Bar reports were read by Henry Hermis, Sr. Rosie Tumis gave her financial secretary and treasurer reports. All other officers' and committees' reports were also read.

The youth club announced that Dis­ trict V YAD will be held at Lodge 88 on Sunday, June 24th. Members were urged to attend and support our youth.

Sick committee reported that Mrs. Doskocil has a broken arm and spent some time in the hospital.

Rosie Tumis and Ruth Kieschnick are out-patients.

Visitors were District V Director Louis Hanus; Christy. Miles, Nicole Miles, Evelyn Hildebrandt, Jo Ann Buri, Josephine Buri and John Dolorski. Director Louis Hanus spoke to our membership. He said that Rosie Tumis was again in first place in in­ surance.

Birthday celebrants for June are Henry Hennis, Jr. (June 6), Charles Motl (June 17), Keith Kieschnick (June 18) and Henry Hennis, Sr. (June 24).

Anniversary celebrants in June are Mr. and Mrs. E.J..Valka (55 years).

Financial Secretary Arnold Peters and Treasurer Lee Leonhardt gave their reports; all were accepted as read. .

A food committee was selected and the following will serve for the next three months, namely, Arnold and Lydia Peters, Orville and Laverne Kunkel; they already decided to have cold cuts, with our members bringing a side dish.

A discussion was held about our members taking a trip together some­ where this summer or fall; it was tabled until our next meeting. Those of you who have any suggestions on where to go, be sure to attend this next meeting and make your suggestion.

Our next meeting will be July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Warrenton Store meet­ ing room.

Lodge No. 180, Burleson Dear Members and Friends: Summer is here and the weather is "hot and dry" are the only words for it.

After all the rain we had in early spring, it just stopped and it is very dry, keeping us busy watering the gar­ dens and yards.

Our June 5th meeting was opened by President Louis Grochoske with the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, and a moment of silence for departed mem­ bers of our Society.

Minutes from the April 3rd meeting were read and approved.

Officers gave reports for April and May meetings.

President Grochoske thanked all the ladies who prepared the food for Dis­ trict III meeting; a thank you to Estelle for the delicious kolaches she made, and to Louis and Mydell, all were very good. We thank everyone for coming and hope they enjoyed it.

Our past president Dennis Barabas made a quick trip to Burleson. It sure was nice seeing him.

We want to congratulate a very nice couple, Carl and Christine Zich of Lodge No. 92, who were celebrating their golden anniversary on June 23rd.

We wish them many, many more years together.

Our Lodge No. 180 still has dances every Saturday. The Green River Band will be playing on June 30; on July 7th, Jimmy Schmidt Band will be play­ ing; on July 14th, The Sensations from Temple will play; on July 21st, we'll have Ramblin' Rhythm playing; on July 28th, Treadin' Water will be play­ ing.

Birthday Club Of Lodge 88, Houston News On June 13, 1990 the Birthday Club meeting was called to order by Presi­ dent Kathy Trefell. She called the roll, and we had a very good attendance.

Secretary Lowrina Lindemann read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read, followed by the financial report by Treasurer Lillie Spies. She also thanked all the sisters and members from Lodge 88 for bringing such beautiful and deli­ cious pastry.

For Sunshine Mary Kosut gave the card report. We were thankful that we had very few ill members, but Mary sends a card to cheer them up.

Old business was that on June 19, the club sisters will go to Ryan's Steak House for a good meal; most of us are looking forward to that. We always have such a good time.

Helen Hegwood, in charge of the spinning wheel for the sales repre­ sentatives, and the auditing committee thanked everyone for the items they brought; also thanked board chairman Karl Lindemann for building a new spinning wheel. It is greatly ap­ preciated, and really worked good=­ we made the money.

Lillian Finn suggested instead of going out to eat we should, at some­ time, go·on a bus tour and enjoy the scenery. We will discuss this later, when it gets cooler. A very good idea, Lillian.

The hostesses for the covered dish were Ardith McClellan, Martha Bax­ ter, Mary Kosut and Margaret Spahr.

It was decided not to have the Birthday Club on July 4th since we all have different plans. On July 11, we'11 have our regular meeting with a covered dish. Agnes Moers made a motion, seconded by Mary Kosut; it passed. Agnes Moers and Bessie Lero will be the hostesses.

Those who will donate pastry are Margaret Spahr, Lillie Spies, Margie Buchanan, Virginia Hale and Esther Lee Holton.

Evelyn Mikolas thanked Rita Alexander for working for her, while her mother, Mrs. Baethe, was in the hospital.

Willie Mae Ermis asked that some of the ladies come down to the hall and clean all the pictures on the wall. It was decided to do this Friday, June 22 at 8:30 a.m.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting on June 6 was called to order by our Vice President Rose Steinman. Our President Joe Prochaska was still working on getting their home in order from the flood.

We extend our congratulations to some of our proud grandmother graduates, namely, Geneva Hennessey's grandson, Shay Hen­ nenssey from Boswell High School with making the Honor Roll, National Honor Society and receiving a scholar­ ship; Ima Lou La Plant's grandson, James Earl Crider from Harlingen High School in Harlingen, Texas; Be­ ssie Brezina's grandson, Jeffery Wayne Ruthessell from Castleberry High School; Ann Sustala's two grandsons, Clayton Jerome Sustala from Aledo High School and Roman Milner from Georgetown High School in Georgetown, Texas. Good luck for a successful future. Nora Cruz reported her husband, Paul, graduated from TCJC Automotive Technology and we were sorry to hear that was her last visit with us becasue they are moving to Temple. Good luck!

Rose Steinman, Jeanie Mason and Carolyn Cleveland will be leaving July 3 for Paris, France and then to Vienna, Kunovice and Prague, Czechoslovakia and then on to Novigrad, Yugoslavia (where they have relatives in both countries) and then on to Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Munich and from there leave on July 23 for home. Frank and Merel will leave on July 9 for Czechoslovakia and will also tour other countries. May you all have a

wonderful trip. They will have a lot to talk about on their return.

We extend our get well wishes to Carolyn and Bobby Cleveland's son, B.J., who was in "Gypsy" as Tulsa at Casa Manana and during the Curtain Call in a freak accident broke his leg and will undergo surgery Wednesday morning, June 20th. Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas Annual General Membership Meeting The annual general membership meeting of the Czech Ex-Students As­ sociation of Texas (CESAT) was held in Calhoun Hall, University of Texas, Austin Saturday, June 9, 1990.

Minutes of the 1989 annual meeting were read by Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Don Pisar and were approved as read.

In reviewing the activities of CESAT during the past year, President Roger Kolar commented on the college scholarship programs which now are the main thrust of the organization.

John Novak, Austin, received the newly established Maresh Scholarship for 1989-90 and Kevin Hannan was awarded the Micek Scholarship for the same period. These scholarships of $2,000 each are now available for un­ dergraduate and graduate students in Czech studies with a deadline of June 30, 1990 for application. Students should apply for applications to CESAT President Roger Kolar, 3108 Glenview Avenue, Austin, Texas 78703.

Last summer four adults in Czech study programs were awarded stipends to attend the Czech summer classes at Charles University in Prague.

Last fall a historian from Frenstat, Moravia filmed a video documentary of the Czech-Moravians in Texas. The first of these video series is now com­ pleted and will be shown on TV in Czechoslovakia on June 19th. CESAT hopes to receive a copy of the finished documentary soon which will be dedi­ cated by President Kolar to the memory ofthe late Albert J. Blaha.

Mr. John Novak who is helping to coordinate the Dvorak Music Festival to be held in New Orleans after the 1991 Mardi Gras Festival will provide a schedule of events as soon as avail­ able. CESAT members will consider travelling in a group to attend this af­ fair after Mrs. Mae Kainer of Heit­ mann Travels, Houston develops information on travel and hotel accom­ modations.

President Kolar reported on his visit to Washington, D.C. last February to attend the reception for President Vaclav Havel and Ambassador Rita Klimova, which was a very memorable · event. Plans are now underway for a

Mike Winnett, chairman of the His­ toric Committee reported on the }faster's Degree thesis on Czech l<'olklore in Texas written by Olga Paz­ dial. A motion to develop this project was approvedby the members.

Recent discussions with officials of the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute in Prague have indicated their desire for a reciprocal exchange of students be­ tween our two countries. The members approved a resolution to promote more cooperation with the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute, however, it will be necessary to develop more information on such a program before it can be put into effect.

A project to relocate or duplicate an original Texas-Czech log cabin of early immigrant days in Roznov pod· Radhostem in Moravia was proposed, and a committee of Dr. Clinton Machann, Robert Janak and Mrs. Mae Kainer was appointed to do further research on it.

A photographer in Opava, Moravia proposed that CESAT sponsor a photo exhibit in Texas of scenes in Opava which would be of interest to people of Moravian descent in Texas. Mrs. Kainer will investigate this matter on her next visit to the region.

In the election of officers for the 1990-1991 year only two positions were open, that of treasurer for the I council of higher education and that of publicity chairman. Ace Chlapek was re-elected treasurer and Charles Heyda was re-elected to fill the post of publicity chairman.

Czech Passenger Lists Reprinted As a result of numerous requests, Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume II, has been reprinted. This book identifies nearly 7,000 Czech and Slovak immigrants who arrived in New Orleans during 1879-1899 and in Galveston during 1896-1906. This data, which was abstracted from various microfilm sources, also lists the home village in Czechoslovakia for a majority of these immigrants as well as their destinations in Texas, Ok­ lahoma, and many Midwestern and Westem states.

This volume includes pictures and data on immigrant ships as well as in­ structions on bow genealogical re­ search may be performed in Czechoslovakiaon a mail order basis.

Round Rock Lodge 187 To Host District IIYAD Dear Members, On Sunday, July 8, 1990, the Round Rock SPJST Lodge No. 187 will be filled with youth from District II. Tfese youth will be competing for dis­ tnct titles in Beseda, royalty, talent and crafts which will send them on their way to state competition.

I hope each of you, as District II members, friends and members, also friends from other districts will come out and see our many talented youth.

Your presence on this day will show our youth how supportive and proud we are of the great SPJST Youth Pro­ gram our Society is so fortunate to have.

Round Rock SPJST Lodge 187 is lo­ cated off IH-35; take the Taylor exit to Highway 79. You will go through 4 traffic lights, take a left on FM1460.

The hall is located 3/10 miles on the right.

Please make note of the registration time. REGISTRATION WILL BE HELD FROM 11 :00 A.M. TO 12:00 NOON! Judging begins at 12:15 p.m.

Workers need to arrive at 10:30 a.m.

The lodge will have available sale of hamburgers for those arriving early.

The evening meal will consist of fried chicken and the trimmings for $3.75.

A child's plate will be available.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Youth Activities Dear Members and Friends: The youth had a meeting on June 3rd with a fair attendance.

The youth gave gifts to the fathers, had door prizes and had a few Father's Day poems.

On June 6th the youth brought cakes to West Rest Haven.

On May 25th they worked on their scrapbook, also held a birthday party for Ruth Krizan.

Our annual lodge picnic will be July 15th. The youth club will have a cake walk and games, so we will be needing cakes for cake walk and items for our games. We will also need a lot of help with tables/chairs, cake walk and games. Come and help us; we need all of you.

There was no birthday celebrant for this month.

Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Meeting Dear Readers, The June 11, 1990 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Carl Macek.

David Macek led the Pledge of Al­ legiance to the flag. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The secretary/reporter read the register. There were nine members, and three adults, SYD Claudette Reese, Rose Harvell and Shirley Ashcraft present.

The minutes were read and approved.

Jennifer Ashcraft gave the treasurer's report. The balance was $237.55.

A new vice president was elected.

Danny Baker will be vice president for the 1990-91 youth year. Carl Macek is our new president.

All of the new officers were installed by the SYD in the adult meeting. The officers took their oath of office and each made a brief statement about their plans for this year. The officers are: President=Carl Macek, Vice President-Danny Baker, Secretary and Reporter=Melanie Zavodny and Treasurer--Jennifer Ashcraft. Con­ gratulations.

Also, Sister Reese presented Janet Macek a camera and a certificate.

Janet was the first place winner in the 15-17 age category of the Camp T­ Shirt Contest. David and Mark Macek, and Jason Harvell were also presented certificates. Congratulations, you are all winners!

Sister Reese gave us YAD cards and reminded us of some very important dates. District II YAD is July 8 in Round Rock. Junior Camp begins July 25th. Teen Camp will start July 28th.

Mrs. Reese just returned from LIT Camp and she shared some of her fun experiences with us. She encouraged everyone to come to camp this year.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m. Refreshments were served by Rose Harvell.

The after meeting activities were a game of cow chip relay and a weaved, construction-paper basket. The ac­ tivities were conducted by Sister Reese.

Thank you, Sister Reese, for sharing your evening with us. We enjoyed having you as our guest.

On behalf of the Cyclone Youth Club, I would like to thank Rose Har­ vell for everything she has done for us.

Rose is leaving her position as youth leader. She has been with our club for several years, and we will all miss her.

Rose has always encouraged us to do our best, and we love her with all our hearts. Her attributes to Lodge 24 will never be forgotten. Rose, we wish you the best of luck in all that you do and also, a great big THANK YOU to you!

Lodge 29 Taylor Youth Meeting The June 10, 1990 meeting of Lodge 29 Youth Club was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by President Diane Havalda.

Member Jimmy Sheppard led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The meeting began with the installa­ tion of new officers by Lodge Presi­ dent Melvin Steger. New officers are: President-Diane Havalda, Vice President--Jason Cervenka, Secretary-­ Nikki Rieger, Assistant Secretary=Jen­ nifer Havalda, Treasurer=Bric Tallas, Assistant Treasurer=Christi Haag, Reporter--Sheri Machu, Photographer­ -Kimberly Holub.

The roll was called. There were 21 members and 9 adults present.

Guests introduced were Melinda Summerlin of Thorndale, Texas. She was the guest of Sheri Machu.

Eric Tallas gave the treasurer's report, a balance of $1,030.15 was given.

This month's social is the June 23 and 24 weekend trip to Houston, Texas to visit NASA and go to the beach.

The charity project for this month will be the Brackenridge Children's Fund.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek dis­ 'cussed YAD and camp which are both coming up in July.

Nikki, Kristen and Tommy Rieger brought beach floats for door prizes.

Winners were Jimmy Sheppard, Chad Tallas and Brian Rieger.

The members then discussed some of the things they would be doing for YAD. A few of the members worked on some of the routines they would be entering.

The meeting was then adjourned.

After the meeting, Eric Tallas, Chad Tallas, Sheri Machu, Mathias Muegge and Kristine Muegge went to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor to take pictures with some of the adopted grandparents.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje Youth Club SPJST El Campo-Hillje Lodge No. 40 Youth Club met Thursday night, June 7 at 7 p.m. at the Commercial State Bank Gold Room. Eleven mem­ bers were present.

President Kim Kacal opened the meeting.

The two Flag Bearers Jared Dybala and Brian Kutac led the Pledge of Al­ legiance and the Youth Club Pledge.

Secretary Martha Bartos read the minutes from our previous meeting.

Treasurer Danny Borak gave the treasurer's report and collected dues.

The people who went to camp on June 3-6, 1990 had to give a little report on it.

Family Day was planned for June 1 O at Lodge 40 in Hillje Hall.

President Kim Kacal spoke to us about an event that is being planned by the .State; it's like an SPJST Youth Festival.

We drew for door prizes. Mrs. Anita Bartos served refreshments.

The next meeting will be on July 5 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

Lodge 87 Temple Youth Club Remember our hamburger supper on July 13th.

We held our monthly meeting on June 10 at 3 p.m.

There were 7 members, 2 guests and 4 adults present.

Plans were finalized for our July 13 hamburger supper. We are inviting all of our friends and neighbor lodges to attend beginning at 5 p.m.

After our regular scheduled meeting, we drove to Troy, Texas and visited Mrs. Linda Schuman and her Green Tree Horse Farm. There we were in­ structed on horse safety and we each got to ride "Lucky." While we were being instructed about horse safety, Mr. Hensley, Scott and Nicholas' father were cooking up some good old hot dogs. A big thank you goes to Mrs. Schuman and Mr. Hensley.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No.35, Elk on behalf of our of­ ficers and entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the family of LAWRENCE W. DIETERICH, SR., who passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 1990 in a Waco hospital, at the age The Seaton Youth Club held their of 55 years.

Services were held at 1 O a.m. on monthly meeting on Monday, June 11 Saturday, May 19, at Trinity Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. at Wonderland Park in Church, in Riesel, with Rev. Stephen Temple.

We first had a social of playing putt Linck officiating. Burial was at the putt golf and other games. We also had Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery.

Mr. Dieterich was born February 27, refreshments of ice cream and cokes.

1935 in Otto, Texas. He married Seaton Youth Club President Jason Myrtle Lehrmann on September 25, Reese called the meeting to order.

There were 31 members and 6 adults 1954. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a farmer and a former present.

Mr. Urbanovsky was baptized and married Joe Klapuch of Moravia and he preceded her in death on September confirmed in the Roman Catholic 16, 1951. A son, Marvin Klapuch and Church of Somerville.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille a great-grandson and three brothers Urbanovsky of Lyons; one daughter also preceded her in death.

Beseda v Ottawě VH: Děkuji panu starostovi a vám všemza vlídnépřijetí. Jelikož, jak jsem slyšel,hlavní náplň tohoto setkání mají tvořit vaše otázky a naše odpovědi, nebudu úvodem mluvit dlouho.

Omezím se na dvě poznámky. První poznámka: z toho, co tu bylo řečeno, by se zdálo, že jsem tu jediný, hlavní a nejdůležitější. Není tomu tak. Mám s sebou velikou delegaci. Mimo představených, (úsměv) myslím těch, kteří byli představeni, to jest pana premiéra (Mariana Čalfy) a ministra zahraničníchvěcí Jiřího Dienstbiera, tu jsou rektoři vysokých škol, vůdci studentské únie, poradci Saša Vondra a Milan Kňažko, členové kolegia prezidenta a mnoho významných lidí.

Bez jejich spolupráce bych těžko mohl něco dělat a bylo by dobré, kdybyste své dotazy neorientovalipouze ke mně, ale k nim. Vidím tu sedět svého přítele Zdeňka Urbánka, který se připojil k naší delegaci zde v Kanadě, protože trávil asi tři nebo čtyři měsíce ve Spo­ jených státech. Je tady mnoho dalších.

Byl bych rád, kdybyste své otázky neorientovali pouze ke mně, ale i k nim a pokud budou všechnyorientované ke mně, tak já nenápadně tu a tam někoho z nich vyvolám. (Smích.)

Druhá poznámka se týká mého prvního dojmu. Vy jste mávali prapory, volali a zpívali, tak najednou připadal jsem si, jak v Praze.

(Potlesk) Já jsem zapomněl jmenovat mezi spolupracovníky knížete Schwarzenberga, který je také tak trochu zaměstnán na Hradě. IS: Pane prezidente, jak jste dokázal vyvrátit přísloví, že hlavou zeď neprorazíš?

VH:Myslím si, že když se člověk nebojí, že si otluče hlavu, tak má šanci, že zeď prorazí. (Potlesk) IS: Jak si představujete možnosti čelit nepříznivým efektům kapitalistické dravosti, konziimerismu, spekulaci atd.?

IS: (angl.) Pane prezidente, jedním z historických sousedů je Ukrajina, chcete navázat přímé vztahy mezi Prahou a Kyjevem v kulturní, ekonomické a politické sféře?

IS (slovensky): Jak může být mladý Čechoslovák -- Kanaďan, zaujatý vývojem situací,·užitečný?

VH: Může být užitečný tisícerým způsobem; může přijet do Československa a předávat těm, kteří nikde nebyli, protože neměli pas, své zkušenosti. Může je sem pozvat.

Možností je bezpočet.

IS: Je naděje na uzavření podobné smlouvy mezi Československem a Kanadou, jako má Československo se Spojenými státy z roku 1929, kdy nabytí jednoho občanství- znamená ztrátu druhého?

Já bych jenom chtěl říci to, co říkám často i v Československu,že před námi je dost nelehký ukol řešit problémy, které se kumulovaly čtyřicet let, některé padesát, některé sedmdesát a některé ještě déle. To všechno nelze udělat za týden. Ty všechny problémy se najednou vyjevilya všichniby chtěli, abychom je všechny najednou vyřešili.

Není to jednoduché. My musíme změnit legislativu, vypracovat novou ústavu. VH: Ano, je to otázka opravdu auten­ tická, protože jsem v tom výkřiku rozeznal známý brněnský akcent.

(Smích). Morava hledá svou identitu.

Hledá vlastně své postavení v naší zemi. Musí nejprve podle mého názoru sama sebe nějak definovat a pak to lze promítnout do nějakých správních nebo administrativních forem. Podle mého mínění, Morava má určitou svoji svébytnost a identitu duchovní a kulturní, to se musí projevit nepochybně v jakýchsi vlastních kulturních institucích, časopisech, spolcích a podobně a tento proces duchovního sebeuvědomění a sebevymezení Moravy může vést k jakémusi sebedefinování a to eventuálně může vést k jakémusi adekvátnímu správnímu uspořádání.

Mělo by se to ale dělat v klidu a ne hystericky. (Potlesk.)

IS: Bude Československosoudně stíhat viníky komunistických zločinů z padesátých let?

VH: Já bych zas až tak nerozlišoval ty zločiny komunistické a nekomunistické. Každý, kdo se pro­ vinil, neríí-li jeho trestný čin promlčen, by měl podléhat nezávislé justici.

Mejstřík, samozřejmě, no to jsme si mohl myslet. Zdá se mi, že příliš moc mluvím já. Příští otázku budu orien­ tovat na. někoho z mých přátel nebo spolupracovníků.

IS: Jaký parlamentární systém je zvažován pro nastávající volby: britský, kde volič volí přímo svého poslance, systém z první': republiky,

kde se volí strana, anebo jiný model?

VH: Volební zákon je teď v Československudiskusní téma číslo 1, tato diskuse v těchto dnech vrcholí a 27. února začne návrh volebního zákona -- předlohu zákona bude pro­ jednávat federální shromázdění. Sám jsem byl přítomen několikahodinovým debatám o volebním zákoně, kde tvůrci jeho předlohu obhajovali proti velmi kvalifikované opozici a obávám se, že nejsem schopen výsledek toho všeho zhustit do jediné věty, jak by se hodilo pro tuto improvizovanou roz­ pravu.

ts (anglicky): Jak je identita dvou základních národů v Československu chráněna? Budou Slováci mít v Čechácha Češina Slovenskusvéškoly, zdravotnictví, vládní a jiné služby ve své vlastní řeči? Bude vaše vláda studovat dvojjazyčnost a multikulturalismusv Kanadě? (Smich.)

VH: Jestli jsem tomu dobře rozuměl, tak se otázka ptala na slovenskéškoly v Čechách a českéškoly na Slovensku;je tomu tak?

Já nevím,já jsem pro každý pokrok, ale jsem proti luxusu. (Smích a potlesk.)

IS (anglicky): Bude nová ústava uznávat právo na sebeurčení pro Slováky, včetně vyhlášení slovenské nezávislostia bude legálnípracovat pro tento cíl. (Česky:)Lidověřečeno: Bude mít svobodu separatistické hnutí na Slovensku? (Pískot.)

VH: Já si myslím, že je věcí Slováků, v jakém státním útvaru chtějí žít, ale pokud mi je známo tak většina z nich chce žít v přátelském státním svazku s národem českým. (Potlesk.)

IS (anglicky): Polsko nedávno oznámilo, že rozhodnutí o znovusjed­ nocení Německa by nemělo být bez Polska: co si o tom myslíte?

VH: Měl jsem možnost o tom hovořit již vícekrát, například v polském Se­ jmu. Vždy znovu jsem opakoval, že si neumím představit sjednocené Německo v rozdělené Evropě nebo naopak rozdělené Německo ve sjed­ nocené Evropě. Zdá se mi, Že odstranění rozdělení (strašná vazba) Německa a odstranění rozdělení Evropy jsou dvě strany téže mince a taková ta zvláštní rychlost, s níž se Německo chce sjednocovat, by měla být spíš motorem celoevropskéhosjed­ nocovacího procesu, než překážkou k němu. VH: Já mám docela rád lidi, kteří nemají žádný politický názor. Teď je najednou u nás tolik lidí s tolika politickými názory, až se nakonec člověku z toho točí hlava. (Potlesk.)

IS (anglicky): Byl bych rád, kdybyste mohl představit svou ženu. Zajímá se o politiku? Co je její hlavní zájem? · VH: Měla by odpovědět sama!

(Potlesk.)· OH: Já myslím, že kdo žil v Československu a zajímal se o život kolem sebe, tak více-méně se nějak zapletl s politikou. Kdo byl navíc ženou Václava Havla, tak se nemohl nezaplést. (Smích.) Takže já jsem na leccos zvyklá a beru všechno s přehledem a s klidem. Jinak se

zajímám velice o problémy životního prostředí, o problémy postižených, o sociální otázky. A to proto, co se u nás v Československu stalo. Moc měla neřestně zařízené ty své paláce, a přitom vidíte, v jakém hrozném stavu jsou nemocnice. Clověk se nemůže o to nestarat nebo nezajímat. (Potlesk.)

VH (odmítá židli): Děkuji, já postojím, já sedím furt. (Smích.)

IS: Bude zrušen ekonomický monopol zahranicňího obchodu?

VH: Máme tu ministra zahraničního obchodu? Ne, ten někde teď vyjednává nějaký zahraniční obchod.

Samozřejmě, že bude. Ty dosavadní podniky, které zprostředkovávaly zahraniční obchod mají prozatím zůstat dál, ale firmy mají mít právo sjednávat přímé kontrakty, nikoliv prostřednictvím těchto podniků, ale pan předseda vlády bude o tom zřejmě vědět víc než já. Hodilo by se, aby od­ pověděl.

Reunions Mikush Reunion

The 29th annual Mikush family reunion has been set for July 1, 1990 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville, Texas, beginning at 10:30 a.m. until ?? You are asked to bring a covered dish. Several years ago many families became involved in compiling the family history. After several years of researching, they will have the books at the reunion for the families to proofread and update them before going to press. The families' histories involves: Stepan Zajicek, Joseph, Martin and Paul Mikush, the Galetkas, the Gebauers, the Sklars and the Machacs; all these families came from what is known as Czechoslovakia.
