Houston And Needville Host District V Seminars The spring sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Houston and Needville.

SFR Helen Hegwood conducted the seminars assisted by District V Direc­ tor Louis Hanus. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote ad­ vanced insight into the modem types of insurance and how they meet SPJST members' needs more fully.

UT Austin will provide matching funds of $250,000 under the Regents' Endowed Teachers and Scholars Pro­ gram, permitting the chair to be funded at the level of $750,000. The founda­ tion is currently raising an additional $167,000, which with a UT match of $83,000 will bring the total endow­ ment of the Czech chair to $1,000,000.

"The university understands and sup­ ports the significance of studying lan­ guages and preserving cultural diversity in higher education," said Dr. Willian1H. Cunningham, president of UT Austin. "UT has taught the Czech language since 1915, and this endow­ ment will enhance an important area of study. We are indeed grateful for this

special support and appreciate the foundation's interest in the Univer­ sity," said Cunningham.

Funds collected by CEFf for the en­ dowment include individual contribu­ tions from more than 600 persons as well as a $200,000 grant from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, Inc., a private, non-profit charitable corporation founded in 1938. Patrick J. Patek, chairman of the Birch Founda­ tion and a Texan of Czech descent as­ sisted CEFf in obtaining the grant.

As recently as the 1970s, college credit courses in Czech were available in at least half a dozen institutions, ac­ cording to Roger Kolar, an Austin ar­ chitect and chairman of the CEFf's board. "Leaders of the Czech cultural movement hoped that courses would always be available for serious stu­ dents of the language and culture of their forbears, but in recent years Czech classes at the college level have begun to disappear."

There are about 750,000 people of Czech and Slovak descent living In Texas, said Kolar. "Education has al­ ways been important to the Czechs," he said. "In immigrant communities the construction of schools was a high priority. The Czech language was central to education." Even after im­ migrants began to assimilate and the language of education became English, the Czech language continued to be spoken at home, at church and at meet­ ings and social activities.

"This wonderful endowment could not have come at a more appropriate time," said Dr. Standish Meacham, dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

"Recent events in Eastern Europe make it imperative that universities in this country provide students with knowledge and understanding of that part of the world. The chair will cer­ tainly help us to accomplish that im­ portant mission."

The major purpose of the endowment is to ensure the continued offering of first-and second-year Czech language courses and advanced language as long as there is a reasonable demand; the development and offering of courses in the history and cultural heritage of the Czechoslovakian people in Europe and in Texas; and the development of in­ terdisciplinary programs and outreach activities associated with Czech lan­ guage, literature and culture in Europe and in Texas.

Other benefits from the endowment may include special lecture series, spe­ cial libraries or reading rooms and scholarship and recruitment programs.

To celebrate the establishment of the Texas Chair in Czech studies, a recep­ tion will be held on campus in Septem­ ber. Rita Klimova, Czechoslovakian ambassador to the United States, will be a featured guest. The next day she is scheduled to deliver a lecture on the transition to democracy in Czechos­ lovakia.

Birch Foundation Grants $200,000 For Czech Chair . Founded in 1938, the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, Inc. con­ tinues in its mission to further the goals and dreams of those organiza­ tions who look to the future. The Birch Foundation's most recent commitment of $200,000 in support of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas to establish and endow a chair for Czech language and cultural studies at a major university is an example of this commitment.

Patrick J. Patek, Chairman of Birch Foundation, a member of SPJST, talces pride in being able to as­ sist CEFf in their project. Under his stewardship, other significant projects have come to life from east to west.

The foundation has assisted in oceanographic studies and building campaign for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, an earth assistance analysis research center at a state university, participation in the creation of a new woman's hospital, com­ munity buildings for paríshes, and numerous other art projects and social services throughout the United States.

The Stephen and Mary Birch Foun­ dation was begun in 1938 by Stephen Birch, the son of immigrants, who later went on to found Kennecott Cor­ poration in Alaska. The Birch founda­ tion is a private non-profit, charitable corporation.

Eight of the ten eligible members were present, which was a good record.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, who was invited on behalf of Lodge 54 to spealc to the assembly, spoke on appropriate topics concern­ ing SPJST's membershipparticipation.

Brother Jan Vaculík has a letter in the Czech Section about most of the meeting's proceedings and fraternizing afterwards.

Brother Leshikar's attendance was indeed very much appreciated by everyone present; they felt honored to to have someone from the Home Of­ fice to participate in the program.

Sunday, June 3 President Harold Rohde called the regular monthly meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, there was a moment of silence held for our departed members.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present.

Secretary Glen Latham read the minutes from the previous meeting.

They were approved as read.

A thank you card had been received from Vlasta Kaderka who had been on the sick list.

President Rohde thanked everyone Can you believe this? who helped in making our annual pic­ nic a success.

Lodge No. 80, Holland Takes Canton Trip Saturday, May 5, thirty-four travelers left the Holland SPJST lodge building at 6:00 a.m. to see if they could shop until they dropped. Enjoying the com­ forts of a Trailways bus, driven by Walter Shelton out of Waco, the travelers were on their way to their mission.

The group got their eyes full along the way · when crossing the Trinity River, east -of Dallas! Because of the previous week of heavy rain, the Trinity looked more like a lake than a river because it was 18 or more feet out of its banks.

Approximately two miles further, ar­ riving at Canton at 9:15 a.m., the group dispersed over the 100-acre shopping area.

The intrepid thirty-four returned to the bus at 5:00 p.m. for the trip home; most felt they hadn't covered a third of

Have you seen the gleeful smile on Rita and Homer Alexander's faces recently? Homer is our FAC and Rita is our faithful past president Birthday Club Sister.

They act almost like new parents, but no that's not it at all. I think they are past that age, but they do have some­ thing to crow about. Their son, Jim, is the recipient of the Prestigious Na­ tional Credit Executive of the Year Award for 1990. Jim is vice president of the First International Bank, Hous­ ton Downtown and was selected from 40,000 credit executives nationwide.

His award, is based on the local level, national level, educational ac­ complishments, individual accomplish­ ments, and promotion of the credit profession. He's dedicated to promot­ ing the value and visibility of those in the credit and financial fields. Jim has served on the Credit Board for over 10 years as director, officer, president, the Scholarship Committee, and was general chairman of the All-South Credit Conference Committee in 1986.

He was on the National level as lob­ byist at meetings with congressional legislators concerning recent proposed ammendments to the Equal Oppor­ tunity Act. Jim has previously served on the Fraud Board and is currently serving on the Legislative Committee.

Besides all his other duties, Jim has found time to make dozens of ap­ pearances nationally as both a speaker and a panel member.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Tops The 2,000 Mark!

Brother Ed Zientek, on the right in the picture, presented 50 pairs of used eyeglasses to Fraternal Activities Coordinator Homer Alexander at the last monthly meeting.

Brother Ed collected these glasses from Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 14 in Schulenburg.

This lodge has donated more than 150 pairs to Lodge No. 88.

Lodge No. 88 has been collecting used eyeglasses for 46 months and we have turned in more than 2,050 pairs to the Houston Eye Center--the lens are reground to prescription and are given to the needy.

Dear Members and Friends: The time really seems to go fast when there is something interesting going on; like here, we had our June meeting of our lodge and all things seemed to be in good shape. There were also things talked about fixing and adding things we need to make the building up-to-date.

It' s time to also be thinking about the Czech Day we will have in September and what type of activities that we should have; one thing for sure, it will be enjoyable as in the past.

However, now that school is out and people are taking vacations, the atten­ dance at our lodge functions seem to not be attended as well.

In my past letter I did have that the Durhams would have the annual fish fry for "after meeting meal." Well, it was this month and there was plenty of fish, hush puppies, French fries and other things to go with the food. It was very good and plenty for all to eat; as always, plenty of pastries the lovely ladies bring each time.

When the fish are cooked just right, it is hard not to go for seconds. Of course, one has to load the plate well the first time but any way most of them did go back for more.

I wish more members would have been there to help eat the good fish.

We thank: Brother and Sister Durham and their helper for doing such a fine job preparing the meal.

Coordinator Helen Kubala said that a drawing for cash will be at each meet­ ing; so, if you want to help fill your pocketbook please attend the meetings.

This Sunday was for Mother's and Father's Day; each parent received a gift from our lodge. Thank: you, Lodge No. 92, for my gift and also all the others thank: our lodge. The Mother's Day is switched each year with Father's Day; this is done to celebrate the days together. As our sunshine per­ son says: "Not because you are a mother or father, but because you had a mother and father."

During June there are many other things going on so our lodge manager didn't schedule any dances for the month of June; however, there will be things at our hall such as parties for the graduates, weddings and anniver­ saries, also there will be rentals in the ballroom for dances on Friday nights.

In July, be sure to look in the Vestnik calendar for the next dance. It will be a hat contest on July 22, the music will be by the Henry Rejcek Band from Ennis. This will be very in­ teresting dance because of the hats; it could be a pretty hat, it can be a funny hat, a hat that you yourself made up, or one of the large hats the Mexicans wear and dance around with.

In addition there will be prizes given for the best, the craziest, the one most creative-v-so get started for the hat you will want to enter and try to win, which could bring a fot of laughs from all present who watch the hat par­ ticipants to be judged.

In the meeting I asked how many read the Vestnik and to be sure to read the Editor's column. He does have some very good articles that we all can learn something from them.

Also our Supreme Lodge President has important things in the Vestnik.

I am proud that we have so many good writers in the Vestnik, because one can keep up with other lodges and we learn from them and may they learn from us; as has been told many times, two heads are better than one.

I was very surprised that one of my friends and members I haven't heard from for many years sent me a nice let­ ter and this was Edward Miller who lives in College Station and is a mem­ ber of Lodge 92. He said by reading , the Vestnik, he keeps up with our lodge and members; that way he knows how our lodge is progressing.

Ed, it was very nice to hear from you and I hope to write to you in the fu­ ture. Whenever you are able, try to come to Fort Worth.

It was also a wet May and stormy month, however, we hope now it has settled down. It was close to 100 degrees so summer is about here. I hope all of you have your air-con­ ditioner ready because I'm sure it will be used. Let us hope that all those who were flooded have returned to the homes and about cleaned up. It's bad to have a flood and have water in your home, which causes lots of damage and also brings in lots of pests; it also leaves an odor.

With all the rains we had and the way it came down, it packed the earth so hard that water ran off rather than soaking in; that way the grass is having a hard time growing. The lawns should look nice about this time of the year, but there are lots of brown spots in most yards.

Getting back to our lodge meeting, Martha Durham sent birthday cards to · members over 65 years of age; for the month of June, there were 15, so to all of you, again, "Happy Birthday" and to ·everyone else who celebrated their birthday: many more to you in the fu­ ture yearst Get well cards were sent out to members in the hospitals; Inez Krivanek had serious eye surgery, Joy Paprskar (with the same problem), Katheryn H. Swinford had a stroke and is in the Methodist Hospital having treatments, Frank: Quirk was in the hospital with surgury two times, Slim Waters fell at a Mall and had to have many stitches on his head, John Motl was in the hospital with pneumonia, but is at home now.

We wish all those who are ill and some who are in the rest homes, a speedy recovery and good health in the future; those members who have got­ ten older and don't attend lodge meet­ tings, we haven't forgotten about you and wish you could be with us. In my next letter, I will try to give the ad­ dress to where you are so maybe mem­ bers will come to visit or write a letter to you.

Congratulations to the following who finished school, namely: Courtney Cooper, Mindy Paprskar, Craig Jones, Robby Pluckett and Michelle Mccraw.

Happy Anniversary to Carl and Christine Zich for their 50 years of married life. We were married on June 29, 1940 in Fort Worth at Saint Mary's Catholic Church. In those days a wed­ ding ceremony took place in the morn­ ing; ours was at 8:00 a.m. (More anniversary news will be written about this later.)

Joyce Tesar is right in there with the rest of the winners because she won $500 at the social games. I'm sure the Internal Revenue Service will be glad to get their part.

We will be happy for a . few weeks because our daughter will be with us to help celebrate our anniversary. Carol lives in Florida and it bas been over a year since we have seen her; her sister, Shirley Ann, is really looking forward to seeing her. Christine will also be having a birthday and now she is out of the sixties.

God bless all of you and stay healthy and, if you are traveling, be very care­ ful and keep an eye out for the other fellow. Have a happy vacation and a safe return home.

Sister Kleprlík has just returned from a brief stay in the hospital.

Jarolyn Popp reported on the Spring District VII meeting held March 25, 1990 in New Braunfels. Members were also urged to take advantage of the SPJST Membership Contest. Bell County Exposition will be held September 16 in Belton, Texas.

Youth Leader Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported 16 youth members and 3 adults will attend camp at Val Verde, July 22; chaperoned by Bob Cleveland and Kathy Closner. Sister Carolyn will come in from Europe on July 23 and then join the group at camp.

Expression of thanks was read from the families of Hershel Ne Smith and Al Svacek.

Sister Pavey reported on all get well, sympathy and birthday cards sent to various ones.

We extend our congratulations to our graduates, Brother Shay Hennessey and Sister Kelly Hill. Best wishes for a successful future. (I dido't hear of any others.) Also congratulations to Brother Brad Durham who was

honored for his services to the sur­ rounding community during the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet on May 24, that was held at the Lake City Baptist Church with President Brad Durham presiding over his last cham­ ber activity.

Brother Emil Milan was honored as the "Father of Texas Gymnastics" on May 19 at our hall with a large atten­ dance of many gymnastic coaches from far and near, with a dinner and dance with Sulak's Band; then on May 26 he was honored in Omaha, Nebras­ ka as the "National High School Father of Gymnastics." Enjoy your retirementI Brother Jerry Milan just .returned Sunday night from St. Louis, Missouri where he attended Sokol St. Louis' 125th anniversary.

Brother B.J. Cleveland will be ap­ pearing in "Gypsy" at Casa Manana on June 12 for 2 weeks.

Brothers and Sisters Jerry, Henrietta, Rome, Mila and Tai Milan; Leslie Poindexter; Frankie, Martha and Josh Milan; Rosie Steinman; Jeanie Mason; Carolyn Cleveland; Marilyn Milan; Shay Hennessey, Debbie Stockard; Christy Colwell, and Emil Milan along with 11 other gymnasts will be leaving on July 3, for the "Sokol's Abroad Slet" in Paris, France; then on to Prague, Czechoslovakia for a program there; then on to visit different countries.

The Milans will visit the late Sister Anna Milan's sister in Kunovice and then on to visit the late Brother Joe Milan's family in Novigrad, Jugos­ lavia. They will return on July 23rd.

May they all have a wonderful trip and arrive home safely.

Sister Frances Mamula from South Bend, Indiana came in for her brother Emil's retirement party and then spent a week visiting with the Milan family.

Sister Sheri Mason came in from Los Angeles for a 2-week visit with her mother, Sister Jeanie Mason and fami­ ly. On May 29 she left for New Zealand. They all enjoyed their visit and arrived home safely.

Brother Milan presented 50-year pins to Sisters Mary Hale and Rose Stein­ man.

The meeting adjourned to Sister Anna Johnson's delicious cake, with Sister Carolyn Cleveland being our ·doorprize winner.

A large group of our members will be leaving this weekend for the Southern District Sokol Slet in Ennis, Texas.

I heard that Brother Jeff Maly was back in the hospital and is now home.

Lodge No.172, Pasadena To Help With Benefit Project Dear Brothers and Sisters: We held our regular meeting on May 23rd.

Brother Jerry Dressler, our president, opened the meeting in Czech and English.

Vice President Sister Bobbye Johnson led us in· the Pledge of Al­ legiance to the flag, and a moment of silent prayer for our departed brothers and sisters.

Sister Lillia Mae Peter had the roll call of officers, also read the minutes of our April meeting which were ap­ proved as corrected and read.

Then all the committees gave their reports and were greatly accepted.

Thanks to all the committees for their good work.

Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, and Sister Helen Hegwood, State field representative, met with our sales representatives before our meet­ ing. They answered questions on in­ surance, and outlined the sales contest.

Thanks for the good short meeting.

Then both spoke to the members at our meeting. We were glad to have them and hope you'll come, again.

On June 4th, we had our work party, had a good turnout and got lots of work done. Our main project was to enlarge the stage and we got that done.

How about that, Brother Albert Risinger; you better come down here and inspect the project. We miss your assistance. Our next work party will be July 9th; coffee call at 8:30 a.m., so come out and help us.

On Sunday, June 24th, our FAC Sister Bobbye Johnson, is helping to sponsor a benefit for The Rose Breast Imaging Center's clinic located about 5 miles south of our Pasadena Lodge No. 172.

The Rose is fighting breast cancer and they are making mammogram test­ ing affordable to all women those who can pay and those who cannot pay.

The Rose Imaging Center was opened in October 1987 by Pasadena Surgeon Dixie Melillo. They are raising money to help defray the expenses and so all women receive testing.

They will have a shrimp dinner and dance, all this for a $6 donation; din­ ner from 1 to 4 p.m., dance from 2 to 4 p.m. with music furnished by South Texas Crystals, Jerry Wayne and The Side Kick Band, and Heart of Texas; the benefit will also have a sale and auction sale.

Pertinent Points From Lodge 183, Arlington To All of Our Dear Lodge Members and Friends: It appears that all things have been moving along at their normal tempo.

The weather in the North Central Texas region has begun to turn in­ temperate in the warmer direction.

Soon, it will be summer and the ~ hot climate will be upon us. This will be the time to be, especially, observant of the extremely elderly and the young. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are common possibilities among these two groups. It might be advisable to discern the differences between these two conditions. They do occur to the young and elderly who are not aware of their immediate situation.

The treatments for these two condi­ tions: heat stroke and heat exhaustion, are entirely different by but they must be administered as quickly as possible to prevent permanent damage. You can consult with your physician or his nurse for further information on these maladies. A doctor recently gave one of his male patients only six months to live. When the guy didn't pay his bill, the doctor gave him another six months.

The dances at Lodge 183 are still moving along quite well. The dance held on Saturday, June 2nd, was at­ tended by an excellent crowd. Buddy Hrabal and Memory Lane played to a group of over 120 folks. The music was fine and the crowd was jubilant.

Someone in the group, who follows this band, celebrated an anniversary and everyone joined in and wished them all the best and they all danced well into the night.

The next dance to be held at the lodge will be on Saturday, June 30th, featuring the Salak Brothers Band.

They will play polkas, and waltzes plus country-western with some rock and roll mixed in the numbers.

Remember that if you have anything to celebrate such as an anniversary or birthday, graduation, christening, etc. be sure to plan to come to one of our dances and let your lodge brothers and sisters help you enjoy a lively evening.

On a world-wide scale, things have certainly changed in the past year. I'm not a qualified world historian, but just to see, on the televised news and items from the newspaper, things are chang­ ing rapidly. With the demolition of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain com­ ing down in places, and democracy taking hold in areas that have not been truly free for many years, it is en­ lightening for all Americans to view.

I'm sure that it makes many of the des­ cendants of Czechoslovakian im­ migrants to this country feel good inside to see their Homeland become a democratic republic.

On the weekend of June 9 and 10, the Czechs were holding free elections for the first time in many years. They were holding two-day elections (Friday and Saturday) to elect a new Federal Parliament. Also at stake were seats for the regional parliaments in the Czech and Slovak republics. The new parliament will be electing a president and it is expected to be Vaclav Havel, the man elected last December to lead the parliament after the peaceful revolution.

Judging from the opinion polls, the Civic Forum would garner about 40 percent of the votes with the Christian Democrats polling about 20 percent nationwide. A spokesman for the president estimated that the former

Round Rock Lodge No. 187 Active In Community Services Several community services were held at Round Rock Lodge No. 187 this spring.

The 1990 District 10 spring meeting of the Texas Extension Homemakers Association was held at SPJST Lodge 187 on March 21, 1990.

Five Hundred and fifty Extension Homemakers and Agents registered for the meeting; two from Tombstone, Arizona and four from Nebraska traveled the longest distance to attend.

There were various speakers from Texas A&M University. As an added bonus Travis County Agent Ted Fisher also spoke to the group.

There was a short course in Lawn, Turf and Landscaping by the William­ son County Extension Service. This short course gave four hours of credit.

To maintain their permit, each person has to take seven hours of study every two years.

Round Rock Lodge 187 also was the site for the 1990 Spring Festival for the India Community.

The concept of the Spring Festival in India originated among the societies where farming was the major occupa­ tion.

This reunion consisted of hours. of socializing, singing, a children ethnic costume parade, Radhakrishman Dance and Bhangra Dance. Most of the food available was of the India Culture such as Avial, Bhel Puri, Chole and Puri, Idli Sambar and Falooda.

At the last entertainment at Burmont Nursing Home, there were only five singers, plus our accordionist, Ralph Milek; those present included Martha Klusacek, Mary Holick, Della Psencik, Helen Janacek and Dorothy Pechal.

After singing, some of us went visit­ ing the residents which we knew. It was good to see my uncle, Joe Chlapek, Aunt Mary and cousin, Cal­ vin Chalpek, to come listen to us entertain.

Lodge 88 Houston Youth Elect New Officers Dear Vestnik Readers, On Wednesday, May 3, 1990, the youth club of Lodge 88, Houston held their meeting.

President Darlene Migl called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m., and Shannon McGee led the Pledge of Al­ legiance.

Afterward, we sang the SPJST Fraternity Song and recited the SPJST Pledge.

Secretary Marlene Migl read the roll call of officers; all officers were present.

There were 22 members, and 5 adults present.

We welcomed one new member, Tamara Williams, who is 6 years old and attends Sinclair Elementary. Welcome, Tamara!

The treasury report was made, our profit for the month of March totaled: $341.40.

The reports were made by various committee chairpersons. Crystal Wal­ lace reported that the scrapbook still needs pictures. No social was an­ nounced.

New business included election of officers and committee chairpersons.

Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Club Dear Friends, The Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Youth Club held its monthly meeting on Monday, May 28, 1990.

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jennifer Ashcraft.

The roll was called. Present were 11 members, 3 adults, and 2 guests.

Treasurer Carl Macek gave · his report. The month's ending balance was $237.55.

Congratulations to Janet Macek for receiving a $500 scholarship from the SPJST. She was presented this scholar­ ship by District II Director Willie E. Kohutek at the Rogers High School Awards Assembly on May 22, 1990.

Janet has been a member and officer of our Youth Club for several years. We wish her the best of everything for a very bright and beautiful future of enormous success!

Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple, with Rev. David Kamman officiating. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Bartek, Sr. and son, Gen. Wayne Bartek.

Survivors include five daughters, Jenny White of Temple, Shirley Johnson of Austin, Patricia Nelson of Palestine, Loretta King of Waco and Bernita Hernandez of Dallas; two sons, Leon Bartek and Lee John Bartek, Jr., both of Los Angeles, California; a sister, Evelyn Martinek of Temple; also 1 O grandchildren and 4 great­ grandchildren.

Mrs. Mezzles was born August 24, 1911 in Elk, Texas. She and her hus­ band, Albin Smajstrla owned and operated the People's Cotton Gin in Mart from 1947 until the early 1970s.

Mr. Smajstrla died in 1969. She later married Joe Howard Mezzles who died in 1986.

Mrs. Mezzles was a longtime mem­ ber of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elk, where she was in St. Ann' s Altar Society. She was a member of Mart Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, and SPJST Lodge No. 35, Elk. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Barbara) Gulig of Killeen; three brothers, George and Edwin Holub, both of Waco and Alfred Holub of Elk; three sisters, Rose Ganser, Mary Norman and Nelda Anderson, all of Mart; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee on behalf of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell of­ ficers and members wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister ELIZABETH R. (ELLA) LUKSA,

who died Friday morning, May 11, 1990 in a Bryan hospital, at the age of 81.

Sister Luksa was born April 13, 1909 in Seymour, Texas to the late Joseph D. Drgac and Anna Marie Sebesta. The family moved to the Cooks Point area when she was a young girl. She at­ tended the Cooks Point schools and was a member of the Cooks Point Brethren Church.

She was baptized in Seymour on December 19, 1909 by Rev. Adolph Chlumska and was confirmed Septem­ ber 16, 1923 in Cooks Point Brethren Church by Rev. F.H. Horak.

She taught Sunday School for over 50 years and also taught several con­ firmation classes. She was a member and treasurer of the Christian Sisters.

She sang in the Church Choir.

Sister Luksa was a member of the SPJST and served as secretary of the church cemetery.

She worked for Cooks Point Store for over 30 years and worked five years at Perry Brothers in Caldwell until retirement.

Mrs. Luksa loved gardening, baking and growing flowers.

She married Rudolph Luksa on Oc­ tober 26, 1932 in Cooks Point Brethren Church. He preceded her in death on December 11, 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, Annie Hronek, Lydia Kubena, Milady Kubena, Olga Ur­ banovsky and Albina Meyer and four brothers, Walter, William, Joe and Johnnie Drgac.

Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and Wilton Chaloupka of Cooks Point; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Fannie Drgac and Frank and Milady Drgac, all of Cooks Point and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 13 at Cooks Point Brethren Church with Rev. Norman Haisler and Rev. John Gantt, Jr., officiating. Inter­ ment was in Cooks Point Cemetery.

Pallbearers were J. D. Drgac, Marvin Kubena, Leon Kubena, Kenneth Hronek, Lamar Drgac, Robert Odstrcil, Alvin Bormann and Raymond Hovorak.

Honorary pallbearers were Billy Albright, Ronnie Albright, Fred Jurecka, James Chaloupka, John Crnkovic and Dudley Haisler.

Mrs. Skrabanek was a graduate of Southwest State University. She was a longtime member of the University Methodist Church. She was also a first resident of Lakeside Retirement Cen­ ter. Before moving to Austin, she resided in Caldwell and was a beauty operator.

She was married to the late John Skrabanek and had one son, J. Warren Skrabanek, both who preceded her in death.

She is survived by two grandsons, Scott Skrabanek of Hayward, Califor­ nia and Patrick Skrabanek of Redding, California; a sister, Mrs. Klara Janicek of Temple, Texas and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at Har­ ris Memorial Chapel, University United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Minnich officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Layce Corsbie of Waco; two sons, William Corsbie, Jr. of Austin and Raymond Corsbie of Waco; one sister, Kathleen Wilson of Farmer City, Illinois; and five grandchildren.

Brother Corsbie was a prominent lawyer in Waco since 1954. He taught courses at Baylor Law School, was president of the Waco - McLennan County Bar Association and helped found Heart of Texas Legal Services.

He was a member of the Waco Founders Lions Club, a Mason and member of York and Scottish Rite bodies.

He was a member of First Pres­ byterian Church and an SPJST member since January 1959.

Mr. Jecmenek was born in Rogers to Edward Jecmenek and Agnes Bartek Jecmenek.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He. was a farmer and rancher and worked at Temple Products until his retirement.

He also owned and operated Bartek's" Station at Little Flock for several years and was a member of SPJST Lodge No.24.

Mr. Jecmenek married Janie Bartek on October 20, 1943.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Jecmenek; a sister, Della Adams and a grandson, Edward "Eddie" Jecmenek in 1989.

Features Czech Heritage Society News The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting on Sunday, June 24, 1990.

The meeting will feature a picnic at the Dupont Employees' Recreation Building in La Porte, Texas, near the end of Strang Road at Sens Road, just off oflnterstate 225.

Doors will open at 12:00 noon and activities will start at around 1:00 p.m, with a covered dish lunch.

Everyone is asked to bring their favorite Czech-style picnic basket or covered dish, which should include one meat dish, one salad or vegetable dish and a dessert.

It was held at SPJST Lodge No. 142 in Houston where Charles and Lor­ raine are active members.

Charles Vince Motl, son of Frances and Vince Motl of Temple, Texas and Lorraine Hurta, daughter of Louise and John Hurta of Temple, Texas were married in Houston, Texas on January 14, 1940 and had a reception immedi­ ately following the ceremony at the home of their honor attendants, Lil and Willie Schmidt.

Charles and Lorraine have lived in the Heights and Garden Oaks area their entire married life. Charles was self-employed in the upholstery busi­ ness before his retirement.

For this festive and joyous occasion, the hall was gaily decorated in white and gold helium balloons, gold lame ribbons and candles, and fresh flowers.

Sefcik Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold and Emilie Sefcik of Texas City celebrated their 40th wedding an­ niversary May 23rd.

They were married by the Most Reverend Father Tim Valenta in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bryan, Texas on May 23, 1950.

For their gift to each other, they took a trip to Washington, D.C. and 12 other states. They really did enjoy it.

Lorraine and Charles Motl Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary

Charles Motl Friendswood, League City and Lake Jackson, Texas along with many Hous­ ton friends and relatives.

A barbecue dinner was served at 6:00 p.m. with a special blessing being given by Pastor Eugene Heckmann of Gethsemane Lutheran Church where Lorraine and Charles have been active members for 35 years.

During the dinner hour, a slide show was presented which depicted 50 years of loving memories of the happy couple.

After dinner, the grand march sig­ naled the beginning of music and dancing.

Everyone enjoyed dancing until late in the evening to the music provided by the talented Tim Janak.

Lorraine and Charles cut the three­ tiered white and gold wedding cake and German chocolate groom 's cake and toasted each other with cham­ pagne while photographs and videos were being taken to record this happy event.

A very enjoyable time was had by all in attendance.

Lorraine and Charles both feel very blessed because Lorraine' s narents were able to celebrate 61 years ~f mar­ riage and Charles' parents celebrated 69 years of marriage.

Lorraine is the fifth of eight children in her family to celebrate a 50th wed­ ding anniversary.

Lorraine and Charles are very thank­ ful for all of the wonderful and special relatives and friends who shared their joy in celebrating their golden wed­ ding anniversary and for making it a truly memorable day.

Rád Císlo 47, Seaton Milé sestry a bratři: Předseda Jiří (George) Pavelka zahájil naši schůzi 8. června v 7 hodin večer.

Vlajky nastolili E.J. Pechal a Gary Skrabanek. Povstáním jsme vzdali památku a byla uctěná pro sestry Ella Bartek.

Ann Balusek byla naše jedna návštěva.

Nemocné členy jsme měli: Tillie Elsik, Claude Wells a Frank Marek.

Přejeme vám abyste všichni byli brzy zdraví.

Protokol z minulé schůze byl čten a byl přijat tak, jak byl napsán. Úředníci a výbory dali dobré zprávy.

Měli jsme náš piknik 2. června · a dobře se vydařil. Předseda Pavelka poděkoval členům, kteří pomohli s piknikem. Studie a já jsme měli "Ted­ dy Bear Stand."

Revizní komise (Auditing Commit­ tee) bude mít schůzi 11. června v 7 hodin.

SPJST řád Jaromír č. 54, West, Texas Vážení bratři a milé sestry: Naši pravidelnou čtvrtletní schůzi řádu zahájil náš president Ted Kocián ve půl osmévečerv pátek v naší řádové síni dne 1. června 1990. Přivítal všechny přítomné členy a zvláště vzácné návštěvníky a naše členy, kteří dosáhli 50 let členstvíu naší jednoty, a předsedu naší jednoty Howarda Leshikára.

Po vzdání úcty vlajce a složení přísahy jsme projednali všechny potřebné věci a jednotliví úředníci přednesli jejich zprávy, včetně naší ta­ jemnice sestry Anne Emmeryové.

Finanční tajemnice Maxine Šefčíková podala následující zprávu o stavu členstva a nových ělenech: dospělí byli zapsáni u našeho řádu: Johnny R. Hutyra, Lillian F. Matušová a Ronnie F. Kaluža, který si přidal dalšípojištění a mezi mládež jsme přijali Jeremy Matuše, Michaela R. Matuše a Jaime Zahirniaka.

V tomto roce několik našich mladých členů vyšlo školu a mezi nimi byli Richard Anthony, Jeffrey Holloman, Pamela Kučerová a Brian Scott. Pamela Kučerová měla pěkný průměr 94.88 bodů a Jeffrey Holloman měl 90.5 bodu průměr. Brian Scott byl mezi deseti maturanty, kteří obdrželi diplom o něco dříve a odmůenu od námořní pěchoty. Jeffrey Holloman obdržel stipendium od West Booster Club a Richard j\nthony obdržel stipendium od organisace w~st ·~

Christopher J. Anthony vy§e1 Texaský technický institut a obdržel diplom v laserové optické technologii a jeho průměr byl 3 .3 bodů ze čtyř možných. Všichni naši členové se připojují k blahopřání těmto mladým lidem a přejeme jim jen to nejlepší v je­ jich dalším životě.

Náš pokladní a pojišťovací agent Freddie Kaluža podal vysvětlení o ne­ jnovějším pokusu naší jednoty získat nové členy a tato soutěž "Vision '90" je otevřena pro všechny členy naší jed­ noty a zmínil se o různých odměnách, které vítězové této soutěže mohou získat. Proto je povinností našich členů upozornit Freddie Kalužu v tom případě, kdy ví, že někdo má zájem o životní pojistsku anebo si chce zvýšit pojištění. Náš pojišťovací agent Fred­ die Kaluža je dobře kvalifikovaný pro tuto práci. Otázku pojištění není možno odkládat, protože nikdo nevíme, co se může zítra přihodit.

Pak bratr president Kocián představil našeho zvláštního hosta a předsedu naší jednoty Howarda Leshikara, který promluvil pěkně o tom, jakou hodnotu mají naše místní řády, jak je důležité, aby naše řády pokračovaly v činnosti a členstvo by mělo vícenavštěvovat schůze, vysvětlil, že jsme bratrská jednota složená z jed­ notlivých řádů po celém státě Texas a že členstvo má možnost pomáhat v jakékoliv činnosti u řádu. Pak bratr předseda odevzdal odznaky všem · členům a členkám, poblahopřál všem za jejich věrnost naší jednotě. Mezi odměněnými byli Bohuš a Marie Chupíkovi, Anežka a Milan Dukjovi, Albína Kacířová, Rudolph M. a Ruby Matulovi, Lillian a Raymond Němečkovi, Maxine a Rudolph J. Šefčíkovi (Rudy je· redaktorem našeho Věstníku), Mary a Robert Shebestovi a Louis a Lucille Wernetovi. Vzpomněli jsme také, že Raymond W. Hutyra a Ilean I. Opella nemohli být přítomni této slavnosti.

Také je velmi důležité pro naši jed­ notu, aby naši členové měli zaznamenáno, kolik hodin strávili na dobrovolné činnosti. Členstvo našeho řádu od pracovalo přes šest tisíc hodin na dobročinnosti a darovalo přes šest tisíc dolarů na dobročinnost. Jsme vděčni všem členům, kteří takto pracují pro dobro naších bližních a doufám, že v roce 1990 si budou naši členové a členky zapisovat tyto údaje, abychom pak mohli společně spočítat, kolik hodin a dolarů jsme věnovali na dobročinnost, což je velmi důležité pro naši jednotu při vyjednávání se státními úřady. Stát by chtěl spolu s profesionálními pojišťovacími agenty odstranit konkurenci bratrských pojišťoven a proto je nutno, aby] ělerř­ stvo podpořilo naši jednotu i této oblasti naší práce.

Předsedkyně Revisní komise Beany Kacířová podala zprávu, že účetní knihy bylo prohlédnuty a shledány v naprostém pořádku.

Bratr vice president John Emery vyhrál losování a bratr president Kocián oznámil, že naše příští schůze se bude konat v pátek dne 7. září v půl osmé večer.

Po ukončení schůze se členstvo a přítomní hosté pochutnali na výborné večeři, která byla z větší části připravena obětavou sestrou J osephinou Kociánovou a také kuchyňský výbor děkuje těm členkám, které připravily přílohy a zákusky k této večeři pro 30 osob. Všichni si pochutnali na dobrém občerstvení.

Naše členstvoje také vděčno našemu předsedovi Hlavního řádu Howardovi Leshikarovi, který ochotně přijel v tak pozdní hodinu a předal slavnostněodz­ naky padesátiletého členství. Také členstvo děkuje ostatním návštěvníkům, kteří se zúčastnili slav­ nosti a přišli mezi nás. Doufejme, že je zase někdy uvidíme i na našich schůzích. Nezapomeňte, že naše příští schůze bude 7. září 1990 večer.

Svačina, anglicky zvaná "covered dish lunch," bude podávaná asi v jednu hodinu od­ poledne. Každá rodina je žadaná, aby přinesla jednu masovou a jednu rostlinovou zakrytou misku jídla a nějaký zákusek. Každý má přinést své občerstvení a nápoj. Odbočka obstará papírové misky a nádobí. Jídlo bude vyloženo dohromady na velkém stolu pro každého společně.

Každý, kdo má zájem o české věci a dějiny anebo má rád dobré české kamarádství, je srdečně pozván být přítomný. Když přijdete, přineste své české věci, které by byly zajímavé na prohlídku pro návštěvníky schůze.
