Day has become such an occasion in the United

that American families are ex­ pected to spend more than several mil­ lion dollars more this years on gifts for dad. Have you ever wondered how this popular day honoring dad got its start?

Father's Day was the brainstorm of a grateful daughter, Mrs. John Dodd,· who wanted to honor her father for his devotion and kindness in rearing six motherless children. Thanks to her ef­ forts, Father's Day was first celebrated in 1910 in Spokane, W~shington.

The F1ag•••Symbol of Our Freedom Symbols abound in our everyday lives. A kiss is a sign of affection; a handshake of trust and friendship. The cross is the symbol for Christianity; a wedding ring for lasting fidelity and commitment.

In and of themselves, these gestures and objects are merely our own crea­ tions. They are simply physical mo­ tions or inanimate objects. Their significance rests in what they com­ municate, what they evoke, what they lead us to do. Because of this, they are very important. They should be respected because of the reality they stand for.

So it is with the United States Flag.

Though a little more than 200 years old and only made of cloth, the "red, white and blue," "Old Glory," "the Stars and Stripes" symbolizes what our country means to every one of us.

Symbols are very personal. We react to each one differently. Whatever the U.S. Flag symbolizes to every person, it is a symbol that should not be desecrated. Too many have died not for the flag itself, but for the country it symbolizes.

But the Supreme Court has voted to allow individuals to bum or otherwise destroy the very symbol of our lives as citizens. Whether we believe the decision to be correct it is our right to do so as Americans.

Ironically, the U.S. Flag symbolizes the Constitution whose First Amend­ ment allows someone to destroy the symbol itself as an expression of free speech. However, the Texas State Fraternal Congress is committed to promoting the ideals symbolized by the U.S. Flag by promoting respect for the 50 stars and 13 stripes. instead of being negative about the court decision, let us, as fratemalists, be positive in our promotion of the flag. We might not agree on the court decision, but that' s what makes us Americans. That's what makes us free.

And the most accepted symbol for that freedom is the flag.

At your next council meeting, take time to reflect on our great nation sym­ bolized in the "Stars and Stripes."

Think about your freedom when you pledge allegiance to the U.S~ Flag at your council meeting. You gather as a council without intervention from government due to the Constitution.

You pause for a moment of silence before the meeting and speak out duržng it because of that great docu­ ment.

Think about it! And salute our freedom the next time you hear that rippling of cloth in a stiff wind or see the colors flash proudly atop a gleam­ ing flagpole.

Better still, fly the flag at home or wear a lapel pin. If others have the freedom to bum the U.S. Flag, we have the freedom to respect it!

Brother J. C. Spacek, Sr., secretary/financial secretary and sales representative, has spent many years of devoted service to SPJST Lodge No. 106.

Clarence Matula of Lodge No. HJC was elected to be a sales repre sentative during a recent re-or, ganizational meeting of Lodge No 106, La Grange.

A meeting of Lodge No. 106 mem­ bership was held on May 9, 1990 to decide the future of their lodge. The members were in unanimous favor to re-organize the lodge.

A new sales representative was ap­ pointed; he is Brother Clarence Matula, also Brother J. C. Spacek, Sr. will continue as a sales representative.

Attending this meeting from the Home Office were Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, District I Director Andrew Vavra, State Field Manager Gene McBride, and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky.

The meeting date was set for August 16, 1990 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Grange State Bank.

The spring sessions of the SPJST sales representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Shiner and Hillje.

SFR Jim Wiest conducted the semi­ nars assisted by District III Director (Sid) Pokladník. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote ad­ vanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they meet SPJST

members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership. The SPJST does require its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje Meeting The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, May 21, 1990 fol­ lowing the social games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order with Pledge of Al­ legiance. A moment of silent prayer was observed for our departed mem­ bers, especially for Della Mae Kurtz who passed away since our last meet­ ing.

Secretary Leona Macha called roll of officers; all officers were present, ex­ cept Trustee James Bacak.

The minutes of the April 16, 1990 meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence received and read were: 1. A letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar announc­ ing SPJST Scholarship Selectees for our lodge, namely: Jill E. Haynie, Linda Kulcak, Charleen Mondrik and Amanda Vanek. We are proud of these young members.

2. Acknowledgement and thanks for contributions to EI Campo Opportunity Center, SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Frank P. Dornak, El Campo Volunteer Fire Department, EI Campo-Louise Special Education Cooperative for Water Therapy Pro­ gram at Meadow Lane School and El Campo Area Workshop for County Fair Food Booth.

4. Termination/Lapses Report from Supreme Lodge office.

The members heard reports from all officers, FAC Dora Lee Kopecky reporting all plans for Family Day on June 10, 1990 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek gave the financial report; a complete copy on file subject to audit.

The members voted to join the Louise Chamber of Commerce and El Campo Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported there were 17 members and 6 adults present at the youth meeting. They will be in the Moody Fest on June 2nd.

They will make boutonnieres for the fathers in Moody Nursing Home. They made corsages for the mothers and presented them to each mother at our May meeting. They also had a program for the Mothers. They elected their of­ ficers for the youth club. They were installed by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

We had two members who received their 50-year membership pins; they were Emma Ceska and John Kofnovec; only Emma Ceska was present.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar presented it to her.

President Howard Leshikar also gave a small history about what a change there has been in all those years.

Brother Jim Wiest gave a report about the "Vision 90."

Holland Lodge No. 80 President Delivers The Bacon!

Lodge 80 President Harold Rohde presents Supreme Lodge Vice Presi­ dent Bernard M. Gebala a $100 gift certificate from Taylor Meat Com­ pany. Gebala was one of the five lucky winners selected at the annual picnic sponsored by Holland Lodge No. 80 on Sunday, May 20th.

The picnic opened at 10:30 a.m. with such activities as the ring toss, fish pond, bake sale, prize social games and auction.

Dancing was from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

Fritz Hodde and The Fabulous Six provided the entertain­ ment.

Lodge members prepared a delicious meal consisting of barbecue and all the trimmings with kolaches as dessert.

All proceeds from all events went to Lodge 80 to support its efforts in com­ munity services.

Lodge No. 87, Temple Meeting President Ladis Navratil called the regular meeting to order on May 11th at 6:30 p.m.

Ed Reisner, flag bearer, led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; also a silent tribute was paid to deceased members.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Various reports were given and ap­ proved.

Pam Sedita Capps and her assistant, Pam Hemsley, reported on the last youth club meeting.

President Navratil mentioned that Camp Funshine will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple beginning the week of June 4th.

A covered dish meal was served fol­ lowing the business meeting.

Mary Ann and Lad Zatopek will host the June meeting on Friday, the 8th.

Ice cream will be served.

The lodge is invited to a hamburger supper by our youth club on July 13th at 7 p.m.

Ed and Florence Reisner will host the August 10th meeting; watermelon will be served.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News

I'm so proud to get to write about my sweet girls tonight. Kelly Sokol is my cousin and lives next door to me, and Kelley Lyons is my great-niece, both are the sweetest young ladies.

Kelly Sokol received a scholarship from the Supreme Lodge SPJST which was presented to her by District V Director Louis Hanus and also was awarded a $500 scholarship from Lodge 88, which was presented to her by the Scholarship Committee chaired

by Josephine Pflughaupt. The scholar­ ships were given according to their ac­ complishments throughout their high school years. Kelly was the president of the senior class at Waltrip High School, also graduated in the top 50 percent of her class with highest honors.

Kelly plans to attend Texas A&M University with a major in accounting.

During summer she' s a swimming in­ structor and life guard at Lodge 88 swimming pool.

Kelly is the daughter of Verner and Diana Sokol, a sister of Kristy Dawn Sokol. Karl and Lowrina Lindemann are her grandparents.

Congratulations, Kelly!

Kelley Lyons, who is my great-niece, also received the SPJST scholarship, presented to her by District V Director Louis Hanus. Kelley also received $2,500 Deerbrook Mall Scholarship.

Kelley gave me a list of accomplish­ ments at Nimitz High School, too numerous to mention them all. She's been vice president for 4 years of clas­ ses at high school, also elected Miss Nimitz High School of 1990. Kelley was on the Starboard Angels for 3 years while at Nimitz and she was one of the top officers in her junior year.

She was also Sports Editor of her school's newspaper her senior year.

She graduated Magna Cum Laude, and plans to attend the Texas University.

She plans to major in Broadcast Jour­ nalism and Communications and also wants to attend Law School.

Kelley's parents are Jim and Joyce Lyons and she has one brother, Jim Lyons and one sister, Jessica; her grandparents are John and Palmae Hil­ sher from Fayetteville, Texas and she is also the granddaughter of our beloved Talita Hilsher. Her paternal grandparents are Commissioner and Mrs. E.A. "Squatty" Lyons.

Kelley said she was thrilled at win­ ning the SPJST Scholarship and now intends to make SPJST proud of her.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Holds First Tarok Tournament

Louis Hanus, District V director and Kelly Sokol receiving her SPJST Scholarship Award. everyone who was invited had brought some delicious food, also a beautiful cake had been baked by some of the ladies, and then arranged on the table with punch and coffee.

After Brother Souchek gave the blessing, all proceeded to fill their plates. Louis Hanus and Jerry Ermis made a few nice remarks and then Mr. Souchek took over and gave a brief summary about their long married life.

Alice asked for the microphone several times and added some little stories about their married Iife-v-very cute.

Alice Souchek was a native Hous­ tonian, but Bill was born in Iowa. She says she met this handsome young man in Houston in 1927 when she was 16 years of age and immediately it was "love at first sight," and married him 2 1/2 years later.

Bill went to Iowa CoJlege and studied Biology and Science, then moved to Houston and taught at Kin­ caid for 20 years. He said that many of his Kincaid students are now in politics; for instance, our Secretary of State Jim Baker from Washington; D.C. and also Bill Hobby who is in Austin, Texas. He named a group of them, but asked me not to name all of them-v-but there are quite a few of them. He also taught night classes at Alvin and San Jacinto colleges for 3 years, 6 years at the University of Houston. He finally decided to retire, but he and Alice knew that was impos­ sible, so he decided to teach Czech.

Lodge 88 was glad to have him; to date, he's had 17 sessions.

Bill and Alice are 2 beautiful people and are loved by all of us. We hope for more celebrations like that. When Jim­ mie Brosch, John Havlik and Paul Machac started playing their instru­ ments, the Soucheks got up and

Dear Members and Friends: Another first has come and gone but isn't forgotten. This was the Tarok Tournament that Lodge No. 92 spon­ sored and turned out great. The players started arriving from different lodges including our members.

The kitchen counter was filled with delicious kolaches and cakes for those who were present, also coffee was available to help wake them up so they could win if possible. Several of them had to leave early to get here on time so the pastries and coffee went over well.

I want to thank the ladies who brought kolaches and cakes. Thanks to «u of you!

I thought I had eaten good kolaches but these were among the best; of course, I haven't ever had any that I turned down.

Soon time came to start and the leaders had things in order. Brother Frank Klinkovsky along with Albert Kubala lined up the players to each table, which worked fine, and there was no confussion.

These Tarok Tournaments are always very interesting and lots of fun to play; of course, if you don't get the right cards it's hard to win, but I can say that all the players were happy and cheerful.

We wish to thank all of you who came from other lodges and hope you enjoyed the day in Fort Worth.

About noon a nice meal was served and I'm sure no one went hungry the rest of the day. This meal was catered by some lodge members from another SPJST lodge here in town.

There were several people attending from Granger, West, Temple, Pilot Point and around our area. The players' wives were entertained some way because they seemed happy.

There were about 44 to 46 players to try their luck at winning in the Tarok Tournament.

We hope next year there will be more because I've heard that more people in our area will start learning to play Taroky.

I want to thank a good friend and an SPJST member who made our tables.

He is related to Brother and Sister Henry Kubala. He is Mike Click of 300 West Oak, West, Texas 76691.

memorable Memorial Day helping Port Lavaca celebrate their 150th anniver­ sary. Dancers David and Kelli Hlavenka and their children Josh, Jill and Jeremy; Ken and Suzanne Vrla and Julie; Stanley and Martha Vrla; and Eugene and Rose Ann Parma traveled to this coastal city on May 26th. Arnold Vrla ably served as our announcer, and Mama Helen Vrla came along to keep us all in line, again. The weather was hot and humid, but dancing to the enthusiastic crowd

helped make the event a lot of fun. The city was having a 1 O-day celebration and we danced with other ethnic groups from the area: Germans, Square Dancers, Cloggers, Mexican­ Americans.

With our May meeting, we plan a Steering Committee meeting at 3 p.m. with the regular meeting at 4 p.m. Fur­ ther information will follow soon.

Even I didn't have luck but I will con­ tinue trying. l 'm sure no one lost their temper so everything turned out great.

Thanks to Brother Frank Klinkovsky for coming to help us and for bringing his wife. Everyone had a nice visit be­ tween the games and during lunch break. Thanks to Brother Albert and Sister Helen Kubala who worked so hard to have the tournament here and overseeing that everything was in per­ fect shape.

I asked Helen how many Kubalas were present but, after counting a while, I said that's all right and I will mention many Kubalas were present.

The Kubalas played Taroky since they were small children so they are good at playing this game, but they can be beat. We appreciate them teaching us this game; just to .show you how the luck goes, our Brother 'Jerry Brezina who has won several times at other places had no luck this time. I thought I did good against all the pros.

I · am sending pictures of our first tournament so try to find yourself in the photos. I hope Brother Sefcik, our editor, will put these in the Vestnik when he 'has space for them. Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine Sefcik are doing a good job of the Vestnik publi­ cation; we should be proud to have them.

Mini-Museum Goes To Inez Polka Fest The mini-museum traveled to Inez Polka Fest which was held at the Inez Community Center and sponsored by Inez SPJST Lodge No. 143 and Placedo SPJST Lodge No. 97.

Three polka bands, namely, the Majek Band of Corpus Christi, Vrazel Band of Buckholts-Cameron, and Vanek Band of Victoria entertained the crowd of 750 enthusiastic dancers with polka and waltz music from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Our May 9th meeting of. SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy, was called to order at 7:30 p.m.

Members stood for the pledge to the flag and it was noted that a new flag had been purchased.

Minutes from the last meeting were· read and approved.

We had five new members, namely, Paul, Kevin and Scott Posival: Ronnie White, and Sheila Jackson.

The chairpersons' reports were all good.

Trustees' Report: Bids were opened for cleanup crew, and new bid was ac­ cepted.

Correspondence was from St. Luke 's Catholic Church thanking our lodge for use of tables and chairs.

Youth Club Leader Lori Messer asked for the use of the lodge for a youth club dance and was given pt:r­ mission.

Notable Events At Lodge No. 183, Arlington Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends: If you missed the dance held on Saturday evening, May 19th, you real­ ly missed one of the best events held at our lodge in the recent past. The Sil­ verados Band brought their music, and I heard several individuals comment on what a good time they had at this particular dance. Their female vocalist was outstanding and their playing made you want to get up and shuffle your feet whether you had a partner or not.

A fair-sized crowd attended this dance and a few people were inquiring of the band, where their next perfor­ mance would be so that they could fol­ low them. I was among this latter group; suffice it to say, that they were good and put everyone in a happy mood.

I feel certain that we will try to get this excellent band to play for us again very soon, so keep abreast of these let­ ters or consult the calendar of events in the back of this publication to see when Silverados will be returning for a repeat engagement; I guarantee that you will not want to miss them.

By the way, did you know that naturalists who claim America's wildlife is disappearing haven't stayed up very late at night.

Charlotte Partridge and my daughter, Shelby, celebrated birthdays during the dance, Saturday. There were several cakes, presems and many well wishers. Shelby turned 21 and Char­ lotte stated that this was one of the best birthdays that she has had in her 30 something years. They received several birthday toasts, sat out very few dances and, all-in-all, had a

wonderful time; if you missed this oc­ casion, it was our loss; if you miss the next affair, it's your loss.

Once again, I would like to remind everyone that our regular monthly lodge meeting will be held this Sun­ day, June 10th, beginning at 5 p.m. It starts right after Sunday's game day so that we can get an early commence­ ment on the affairs of the lodge. Please try to attend these important meetings.

Make your vote count. A meeting is like panty hose; it's what you put into it that matters. .

This particular letter is being written over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Everyone at the lodge is preparing to observe this holiday and there are many diverse methods of celebration. Hopefully, everyone will have enjoyed themselves and traversed the holiday in a safe and sound fashion. Some families were planning to travel, some had local get-togethers with swimming, barbecuing, picnics, etc.

For this and the following holidays during the coming months; please use a little common sense and common courtesy so that you can com-mon back and visit with your friends and neighbors at Lodge J 83.

The summer-time is when, if the girl next door comes over and asks you to light her fire, she' s talking about a bar­ becue.

If you ever see Jerry Mikus working at his usual spot on one of our game nights, you would not notice anything different about him at first. Jerry is hearing and speech impaired. His wife is also, but they have never let this deficiency mar their activities.

Jerry's wife loves to play social games. She celebrated her 63rd birthday on May 25th.

For many years, Jerry was a union carpenter and helped construct many of the retail stores and other structures in and about the Dallas/Fort Worth area, having just retired recently.

This exceptional couple raised four nonual children.

Jerry received his 50-year SPJST pin in 1988. His parents were charter members of the lodge in Inez, Texas.

His father is deceased, but his mother is still going strong at 88 years of age.

Jerry has used his skills many times at our lodge and has built cabinets, ramps, improved the lodge's rest rooms, and has accomplished many other tasks that were requested.

He is currently taking care of the outside landscape and is doing a great job. Jerry attends the monthly lodge meetings on a regular basis.

Although he can't hear the music, Jerry loves to dance polkas and other dances, feeling the beat of the music via conduction.

Lodge 183 has sponsored Jerry in fishing tournaments for the hearing­ impaired almost since he has been a member of the lodge. He has placed near the top in several of these con­ tests and has trophies for his trophy case.

He works hard to make our game nights a success and many of the par­ ticipants love to buy supplies from Jerry because he playfully teases them while he makes his way among the crowd. He may not look different in a group, but his courage truly sets him apart.

We held our regular Family Night on May 25th. Due to the Memorial Holiday, the attendance was down slightly; but we still had approximately 20 individuals who attended this merry evening.

As usual, we had more food to eat than was possible for our group to con­ sume. The lovely ladies who provided

the covered dishes simply outdid them­ selves, again. The lodge supplied a lot of chicken from the Kentucky Colonel.

The ladies attending brought excellent dishes and delicious desserts.

I don't have room to list them all, but my mother-in-law, Mary Sill, brought a delicious pineapple upside down cake and Betty Hlavaty brought a ter­ rific apricot pound cake.

At the end of the evening, folks were stumbling over each other trying to get the last pieces of these cakes to take home to enjoy.

My husband. Robert, works for the Police Department for the City of Fort Worth. He is a civilian employee and works as a computer specialist. He works in the central Police Department among many administrative police of­ ficers. He told me about an article that he had read about some New York City policemen who had been perform­ ing administrative jobs for many years.

In order for these administrative of­ ficers to keep from losing their skills as law enforcement officers, they were being forced to leave their desks and walk a hfillt. several times a month.

Some of these individuals had not seen duties other than administrative for about 9 years.

Several of these officers got into a discussion about wearing their protec­ tive bullet-proof vests. One officer who had apparently gained a substan­ tial amount of weight since being out among the populace was unable to wear his vest.

His cohorts questioned him about his intentions, whether he planned to lose weight or to obtain a larger vest. He answered that he did not intend to do either; in fact, he did not plan to wear a bullet-proof vest even if he located one that would fit.

He noted that if an officer got into an exchange of gunfire while wearing a vest and was struck, he would be sus­ ceptible to two types of wounds: if he received a head wound, in all likelihood he would survive; other­ wise, he could be struck in the groin.

This particular officer exclaimed that if he were struck in the groin, he would shoot himself in the head.

Ennis Sewing Circle I have been writing the NEWSLET­ TER every two or three months. The news does get "old news" for that length of time. So, I decided to write every month and the letters will be shorter.

Our Circle met on May 10, 1990 at the SPJST Lodge No. 25 hall.

President Sadie Kubin presided at the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited.

Visitors welcomed were Frances Kudrna, Joe Houdek, Bob Zvolanek, Alvin Elsik, Jerry Kohn, Frank Holley and Randy Trojacek. Sorry Randy, for calling you "Danny" in my last letter.

Secretary Georgia Tupy read the minutes which were approved as read.

Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report which was approved as read.

Sunshine Stacie Hejny sent a get well card to Sister Mary Kopecek, who had surgery at Baylor University Medical Hospital in Dallas. She is now taking therapy. We wish her a quick recovery.

Linda Trojacek was welcomed as our new member.

Thank you notes were from the fol­ lowing: Sister Libbie Wisniewski for the get well card and money gift; Sister Rosie Bednar for winning the quilt top at our April meeting; and Larry Laznovsky for the donation for the Sokol Building Fund.

Sister Rosie Bednar's quilt was quilted in May. Sister Stacie Hejny, who was in charge of the quilt tickets for the draw­ ing at the Polka Festival, thanked everyone who helped with the ticket sales.

Lodge 88 Houston Youth Club News The Lodge 88 meeting was held Wednesday, May 21, 1990 and called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Darlene Migl.

There were twenty-two members and six adults present.

We had a new member, Tamara Wil­ liams, who is 6 years old from Sinclair Elementary.

We had one guest, Brother Louis Hanus, who took pictures during our meeting of our new elected officers.

The minutes were read and approved.

Jason Michalak, our treasurer, gave the treasurer's report which was $346.40 for the month of April.

Our fund-raising plans this month are kitchen sales.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported that camp and YAD forms MUST be turned in by May 25, 1990.

We greeted our new member, Tamara Williams.

She was born September 16, 1923 in West, Texas to Victor and Mary Krizan. She attended schools in West and Cottonwood. She attended West High School and graduated from Lake View High School and San Angelo Business College.

She married George Fred Socha on May 7, 1946, in Sacred Heart

Cathedral in San Angelo.

She was employed at Goodfellow Air Force Base from 1944 to 1950 and worked in the dairy business with her husband from 1950 to 1980.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and SPJST Lodge No. 160 where she was youth leader from 1969 to 1973.

She was a dedicated daughter, caring for her ill father from 1967 to 1979 and her mother from 1982 to 1989.

She will be dearly missed by her hus­ band, children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, George Socha of San Angelo; one daughter, Margie Jane Autrey of Hous­ ton; one son, Neal Edsel Socha of Fort Worth; three sisters, Ruby Price of Clear Lake, California, Evelyn Galvan and Elaine Robertson, both of San Jose, California; three grandchildren, Daniel Autrey of Texarkana, Texas, Dawn and Danny Froh of Fort Worth, Texas.

She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Socha, on August 26, 1950.

Pallbearers were Ronald Socha, Larry Socha, Mark Barta, Dan Wil­ liams, LeRoy Stearns and Charlie Book.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Jaromir Lodge No. 54, West on behalf of our entire membership, ex­ press our condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother JOE KASIK, age 72, of Route I, West, who passed away Thursday afternoon, April 26, 1990 at a Waco hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Saturday at the West Brethren Church with Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating.

Interment followed in West Brethren Cemetery near West.

Brother Kasik was born August 3, 1917 in Axtell, Texas to the late Char­ les and Frances Kasik. He married Christine Matus on August 27, 1940 in West. She preceded him in death on July 2, 1980.

He was a farmer all his life and worked for Centerion Mobile Homes in Waco for 10 years before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 54 in West and the West Brethren Chruch.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Joe Kasik of Abbott, Edward G. Kasik of West, Harry Kasik of Irving and Ronnie Kasik of West; one daughter, Mrs. Gilbert (Lillian) Marek of Ab­ bott: one brother, John E. Kasik, Sr. of Malone; two sisters, Elsie Stunkard of Iredell and Lillian Urbanovsky of West; 13 grandchildren; two great­ grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were John E. Kasik, Jr., Marvin Matus, Jerry Matus, Michael Urbanovsky, David Trammell and Joe Mitchell.

Honorary pallbearers included Robert Christopher Kasik, Chad Ed­ ward Kasik and Tommy Floyd Kasik.

Adherhold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

After the wedding, the reception line was held outside the church graciously greeting all who came. The lovely couple and bridesmaids rode in a lovely wedding coach drawn by two white horses down Main Street to the reception hall.

Hundreds of special delicate satin rose buds adorned the table arrangements as they were lovingly hand crafted by Kathy's grandmother, Bessie (Zidek) Smith of Floresville. She was graciously able to make the trip to attend the out - of state wedding.

Kathy is the granddaughter of the late Joseph Henry Smith and Alden Stanley and Lillie Mae Campbell, all of Floresville, Texas.

Other relatives attending the wedding from out - of - state were the bride's sisters and families, Terry and Paul Pfeil of Floresville, Cheryl and Robert Morrisey of San Antonio, Texas.

The happy couple visited with the out - of - town guests for a few days, then they journeyed by plane on their honeymoon to California and Hawaii.

The bride is a graduate of John Marshall High School of San Antonio and a graduate of Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) of Waco, Texas.

The groom is a graduate of Watertown High School and has done his duty in USAF. The couple will reside in Watertown (Boston), Massachusetts.

Matt will continue with his profession in plumbing and heating, and Kathy as a commercial artist.

Vážení, předkládáme Vám časopis Československo '90, v němž Vás chceme každých 14 dní pravdivě infor­ movat o životě v naší zemi. V Československu se v posledních měsících mnohé změnilo: dřívější totalitní režim padl v tav. sametové revoluci, vládu direktivně řízenou všemocnou KSČ nahradila vláda národního porozumění, v čele republiky stojí prezident s vysokých morálním kreditem, projevem ob­ novené občvanské aktivity se stalo Občanské fórum a Verejnost proti násiliu.

Chceme Vám tedy Československo představovat jako zemi pluralitní demokracie, směřující k tržnímu hospodářství, jako zemi, která se snaží o návrat do klubu vyspělých zemí Evropy. Úspěchy, ale i problémy této cesty, se odrazí v obsahu našeho časopisu. Nulté číslo, které jste právě obdrželi, je ukázkou toho, co v budoucnu od nás můžete očekávat.

Mluvnice- Grammar 1. The First Conjugation The verbs that belong to the first conjugation generally end in "ati". In the above vocabulary there are two such verbs, "dávati" and "volati". To conjugate them we take off the ending "ati" and add the verbal endings as follows: dávati- to give Singular 1st person: dávám- give 2nd person: dáváš- you give 3rd person: dává- he, she, or it gives Plural dáváme- we give dáváte- you give dávájí- they give 2. The negative verb in Czech is formed by prefixing the particle "ne" before the verb.

Hradní stráž do gala Pražský hrad je sídlem prezidenta republiky. Jednou ze změn, která má vést k sice neokázalé, ale důstojné reprezentativnosti tohoto sídla, je nové postavení a tomu odpovídající oblečení Hradní stráže.

Tato výběrová jednotka byla dříve součástí Vojsk ministerstva vnitra.

Nyní byla z působnosti tohoto ministerstva vyčleněna a zůstal jí jediný úkol - reprezentace prezidenta republiky a ostraha jeho sídla.

Vzhledem k tomuto úkolu však bylo nutné změnit i stejnokroje Hradní stráže, které byly strohé a barvou khaki připomínaly spíše oblečení pro vojáky do polních podmínek než k prezidentské reprezentaci.

Nový stejnokroj navrhl akademický malíř Theodor Pištěk, známý mimo jiné tvorbou kostýmů pro herce ve filmu Miloš-e Forman-a "Amadeus", za něž získal nejvyšší americkou filmovou cenu - Oscara. Návrh nových stejnokrojů vychází z předválečných tradic uniforem 20.-30. let. Blůza v tmavé pařížské modři je upnutá ke krku se stojáčkem néhrúovského stylu, který doplňuje škrobený límeček.

Zajímavé jsou nárameníky s modrou zahrádkou, v jejímž středu jsou červené výšivky lipových listů s květy.

Blůzu doplňují ozdobné šňůry v barvě trikolóry a světle šedé kalhoty s lam­ pasy. Důstojníci mají místo stojáčku otevřenou blůzu a pod ní košili s vázankou. K uniformě patří i pláště v barvě pařížšké modři z vlněného flauše s dvouřadovou otevřenou fazónou.

Polobotky z černé boxové kůže dodala pařížšká filiálka obuvnické firmy Baťa. K výzbroji patří i puška upravená tak, aby ladila s uniformou, v rukou důstojníků pak i historické šavle.

Nezůstalo jen u nového oblečení, nové jsou i ceremoniály vítání hlav států. To vše mělo premiéru 15. března I 990 při uvítání prezidenta SRN Richarda von Weizsáckera. Lákavou

podívanou pro návštěvníky Hradu se jistě stane střídání stráží, předávání standarty prezidenta republiky mezi strážemi, a to za doprovodu fanfár z okna u Matyášovy brány, vždy v. době od 5 do 23 hodin, kdy je Pražský hrad veřejnosti otevřen. Hudebníci jsou oblečeni také do nového - v červených blůzách s modrými kalhotami, případně v modrých kabátech s červenou na manžetách.

Občanské fórum Ačkoli není politickou stranou, je rozhodně nejvýznamnější politickou silou od listopadové sametové revoluce v Československu.

Reprezentuje nejširší občanský proud. Je to spontánní hnutí těch, kdo mají kritický vztah k politice předrevolučního vedení státu.

Je to současně střešní organizace, jakási přípravka pro nově vznikající politické strany. V programu Občanského fóra, z něhož vzešel například čs. prezident Václav Havel a řada členů současné čs. vlády, je kromě jiného požadavek, že Československo se musí stát právním státem. V tomto duchu musí být vypracována nová ústava. Zásadní, důsledné a trvalé změny v politickém systému jsou nutné. V zahraniční politice Občanské fórum počítá se zapojením Československa do evropské integrace.

Co se týče národního hospodářství, Občanské fórum hodlá podporovat vytvoření rozvinutého trhu, nutné je rozbití monopolu velkých podniků, vytvoření skutečné konkurence, jejíž podmínkou je rovnost různých typů vlastnictví. Československo musí být sociálně spravedlivou zemí. Vzdělanost je nejcennějším národním majetkem, kultura se musí vymanit z pout jakékoli ideologie. Československo 90
