The spring sessions of the SPJST sales representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Ennis, Cottonwood and Fort Worth.

SFR Jim Wiest conducted the semi­ nars assisted by District III Director (Sid) Pokladnik. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote ad­ vanced insight into the modem types of insurance and how they meet SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations · is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership. The SPJST does require its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood .Meetmg Dear Readers: On Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m., the lodge meeting was held and was opened by Sister Barbara Jean Hykel.

The Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto were led by Tammi Dobecka.

Minutes of our last lodge meeting were read by Secretary Barbara Jean Hykel.

Treasurer Karen Kroll and Financial Secretary George Straten also gave their reports.

All reports were approved as read.

Willie Mae Schuetz then gave her youth club "doings."

A get well card was sent to Tommy Sadler.

Those attending District III meeting on April 29 at Lodge 180, Burleson from our lodge were Bobby Dobecka and family, Willie Mae Schuetz, Presi­ dent Johnriie Krizan and Ruth Krizan.

We enjoyed the meeting, especially the good turkey dinner they served with all the good trimmings, sweets and drinks.

Board of Trustees Chairman George Straten gave the details which were discussed at their last board meeting and said the committee accepted their positions for our annual picnic which will be held July 15, 1990. This was voted on at the meeting.

Also at this meeting, it was a celebration of all the mothers who were present. Tammi Dobecka read a sweet poem to them and the youth passed out live one-stem carnations and stick-on butterflies to put on the refrigerators.

Others who did some hard work at the lodge were George Straten and Ed­ ward Hykel by pushing the lawn mowers, cutting all the grass around the hall and yard, plus trimming the hedges. Robert Dobecka sprayed the fire ants all around the hall and yard.

Thanks boys for doing something good that needed to be done; it's ap­ preciated.

Thanks also go to the cooks, namely, Edward and Barbara Jean Hykel and family who prepared good fried chick­ en dinner before the meeting with several other dishes of good food and drinks including lots of sweets brought by other members.

President Johnny Krizan and I missed this meeting by being out-oftown that weekend. .

Then it was time for door prizes; today's meeting door prize went to Willie Mae Schuetz.

Dear Members: Due to some extenuating circumstan­ ces, this writer's letter will have many facts missing in his report about the May 6th monthly lodge meeting. Con­ vening on time, the meeting lasted only about three-quarters of an hour.

All reports were kept short with the treasurer's report not being given be­ cause Brother Lupík, the lodge treasurer, was home ill. We wish to thank Brother Jerry Mikulas, the Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary, for being present to do the honors in presenting the 50-year pins. He also gave a very enlightening report on his job and the general operations of the Supreme Lodge. Thank you, Brother Jerry, and we were sorry you had to leave early.

The 50-year pin recipients, present in the meeting, were Brothers John Bar­ tos and Ed Janik along with Sisters Anna Bartos, Frances Kelner, Louise Krall, Agnes Pilcik and Jane Solak.

This writer received his 50-year pin due to his having a JT policy issued in May 1936.

Mother's Day door prize winners were Sisters Lillian Kainer and Louise Krall, respectfully. The regular door prize was won by Sister Helen Kelner.

A special door prize given by Brother Jerry Mikulas was won by Sister Sophia Kasmir.

At the luncheon and fraternal hour, the festive air was high with everyone enjoying themselves. The lodge fur­ nished some barbecue beef and smoked ham which was prepared by Vincik's Smokehouse. Sisters Haver­ da, Janik (Mrs. Ed), Kasmir, J.H. Kel­ ner, Kovar, Krall, Pilcik, Perez, Sulak and Nezval along with Brother "Tony" Kelner donated enough food to fill the regular table along with another small table. Thanks, folks!

Wednesday, May 30, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/7 Klecka, a local businessman and entrepreneur, who imports Czechos­ lovakian goods and runs group tours to Europe, was unable to attend the May 6th meeting because of a previous commitment that could not be set aside. Brother Klecka's father, John Klecka, was a charter member of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Ber­ nard.

On Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m. will be the convening of another monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas.

Father's Day will be remembered with a special door prize. The agenda will follow the regular "Order of Business" and business needing attention will be taken care of.

A light luncheon and fraternal hour will convene after the adjournment of the business meeting.

It saddened this writer that some of the recipients of 50-year pins were un­ able to attend the meeting. In many cases these people would have at­ tended but because of health problems of their own and/or in their immediate family this was impossible. Also, due to extenuating circumstances, this writer and the lodge FAC "Tony" Kel­ ner were unable to deliver the pins before this letter was and had to be written. To these brothers and sisters: Be patient with us for we will see to it you will receive your pins either hand­ carried by one of us or by mail.

Lodge No. 35, Elk Meeting Our May 6th meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by President Henry Breitkreutz and Jason Pipes led us in . the Pledge of Allegiance.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Jes­ sica Pick.

Door prizes were won by Richard Burney, adult and Kimberly Shaver, youth.

Our youth club gave a Mother's Day skit which I am sure was enjoyed by all. The youth club will furnish T­ shirts for camp this year, with camp being from July 22 to July 25 (which is a Sunday through Tuesday.)

A plaque was given to the lodge for Mother's Day from Jana and Robin Breitkreutz.

All mothers were registered for a drawing with the pla­ que being won by Kathy Pavelka.

We were sorry to learn that Edwin Pavelka and Libby Mezzles have been sick. We wish you both a speedy recovery.

Friday, August 3, a "Youth At Heart" evening is planned for all ex-teens, present teens and adults who will enjoy the music of a disk jockey play­ ing music honoring this group. Bring your children, too, there will be games to entertain them.

We pray that it will be a happy day for you. Mothers are still the most influen­ tial people in their children's lives.

May God's blessing be with you mothers today and remain with you every day. To many of us, our mothers are just pleasant memories.

My family and my sister's family met at my daughter Arlene and Al Marshall's in Weimar. We had a beautiful visit.

On Monday, May 14, 1990 we had our monthly meeting with a good at­ tendance. The Migl twins, Darlene and Marlene, presented the flags.

President Jerry Ermis read the names of our departed sisters and brothers; namely, Agnes Pederson, · Rosie Ann Horcica, Robert M. Gregory, Marvin L. Smith, Mrs. Annie Baethe and Joe Zucha.

The minutes and communications were read by Recording Secretary Mildred Holeman.

Since this was the month of initiation we had one member, Carolyn Dubala, who was initiated and welcomed by all ..She was written up by Edna Wehr­ ing, and I'm sure Edna will put her to work soon.

FAC Homer Alexander gave his report. We are all disappointed about the Defensive Driving Course=do hope it'll soon be solved; although in July, the course will be offered at the Houston Community College for $20 a session. Homer has collected over 2,000 glasses. Ed Zientek from La Grange has been a great collector for Homer this year.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney is a great youth leader, who does many things with the children to make money, then repays them with a picnic et cetra.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox was absent due to a basketball game he couldn't miss, so Vice Chairman Ben­ nie Kocich announced our dances for the future, and the profit was very

good. The dances are listed on the Calendar page in the Vestnik and we also have some schedules for the remainder of the year.

Social Committee Chairman Willie Wehring was so proud of our profit in April. It's unbelievable that six of us are still working every Thursday night for the past 25 years.

Men's Club Chairman Ed Miculka told me that we have 20 concrete tables and benches on our lawn in the backyard and around the swimming pool, so 19 men from the Men's Club cleaned all the tables with a machine that was rented. A hard-working group of fellows and with that they have fun and good food.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann gave a good report. He needs two more life guards. The pool will open full­ time on Splash Day, with $1 for rnem­ bers and $3 for non-members. Karl then announced that 56 chairs have been purchased and have already been delivered, also a refrigerator to cool the drinks. The board is kept very busy, so let's cooperate and make it easier for everyone concerned.

Choral Group President Gene Barcak announced one more rehearsal on May 23 with the Czech Orchestra, and then "break" for a while. I understand that Gene and Georgia took off for Las Vegas after that. (Gene, I hope you leave some money there for me when I go.)

Kathryn Jolly, secretary of Czech Concert Band, read a list of their events for the rest of 1990. A very good orchestra, that is I Our Czech Instructor Bill Souchek reported that after Monday, May 21, the 17th Czech Class will come to an end for a while and he concluded with a narrative.

Our sick members are Irene Slovacek, who had a heart attack, Jeanne Jones, craft instructor has been ill; also Wilma Wallace had surgery.

(Wilma's father was Frank Tesar, a past president of Lodge 88.)

Joe Ehler died May 13, 1990 and was buried in Hallettsville on May 16th.

His wife, Judy Gerlich Ehler, is the survivor with many nieces and nephews, who are nearly all SPJST members, although Joe and Judy were not members, but were at the lodge all the time. He will be missed a great deal.

Lydia Marsh had a knee replacement on May 16th. She's in Hermann Hospi­ tal, but will be home soon. Tom, her husband, who I understand is a good cook, will get her back on her feet soon. Lydia's boys, Lynn and Randy and daughter, Carman, keep in touch with her. She's looking forward to the journey home.

Henry Knapick is home from the hospital, after by-passes on his knee and legs. You've had a rough time, but after it's all healed you'll be thankful you had it done. I know Doris, your wife, and your precious daughters will take care of you.

Karl Lindemann is on crutches, too-­ he had surgery on his knee, but he' s going strong. Take care Karl-dt pays to do what the doctor instructs you to do.

Franklin Bravenec is doing fine, too.

It's wonderful to report on all these fine people who have had a hard time.

Prague, Czechoslovakia April 28, 1990 Dear Friends: I am writing this letter as a repre­ sentative of the newly-established BOHEMICUM company. The political and economic changes in Czechos­ lovakia finally made it possible for us to launch a long-planned study pro­ gram for students of Czech and Slavic languages and literatures, for Czechs living abroard and their descendants, as well as for everyone interested in various aspects of life in our country.

The program includes: 1. Top-quality Czech language cour­ ses 2. Lectures on Czech civilization 3. Visits to cultural and historical monuments and places of ínterešt, with an opportunity to learn more about Czech people traditions, crafts, and in­ dustry (our plans include e.g. visits to a brewery and glass works).

We are expecting that most par­ ticipants will be interested in a three­ week program consisting of an intensive conversational · language course and lectures about Czech his­ tory and literature, arts, music, ar­ chitecture, folklore, politics, and economy. However, unlike other similarly-oriented programs, the cur­ riculum in the Bohemicum courses (as well as the length of the entire pro­ gram) will be partly modified accord­ ing to the students: wishes and interests (see the accompanying ques­ tionnaire).

Every day (except Saturdays and Sundays), there will be five 45-minute lessons, taught by professsors of Char­ les University. The participants will stay in an annex of a hunting lodge . (now a country hotel and a restaurant)

about 60 kilometers - or 35 miles from Prague, with an opportunity to visit the capital. They will be offered a diver­ sified cultural program.

The participants will be charged ac­ cording to the length of the program: 280 U.S. dollars for a one-week course, 390 USD for a two-week course, 485 USD for a three-week course. These basic prices cover the tuition, cultural program, lodging and food; they do not cover the participants' expenses connected with traveling from their country of residence to Prague, Czechoslovakia, and back.

We plan to offer the above program every six months, in September and February. Having considered the lively interest Czechoslovakia has aroused lately (no more places are available in any of the Czech language programs offered by state institutions). We in­ tend to realize our first course, for 35 40 participants, already in September, 1990. Whether the plan will material­ ize or not depends entirely on response to this letter, though. SPJST State King and State Queen Appear In Annual Bruceville-Eddy Parade On Saturday, May 12th, State King Bryan Becan of Lodge 84, Dallas and State Queen Stephanie Roye of Lodge 30, Taiton appeared in the 1990 Bruceville-Eddy Parade.

The parade proceeded without a hitch even though the weather threatened most of the morning. Bryan and Stephanie represented the SPJST

Society with grace and dignity as they have done all year.

We were fortunate to have State Duke Chris Coker and State Duchess Crystal Roye to carry the royalty ban­ ner. Chris and Crystal did an outstand­ ing job including handing out warm smiles and waves to the crowd.

There were 23 youth members and fourteen adults present.

Paul Havalda led the pledge to the flag and remained standing for our SPJST Motto.

Youth members served all the moms refreshments for Mother's Day and had a skit for them; some of the mem­ bers made little baskets for their mom.

Kristen Rieger is our new youth club member and she attends Kindergarden at Thrall.

Donna Vanecek, our youth leader, gave out our camp sheets and YAD cards. She got a group together to do a skit for YAD. She said all point sheets should be handed in by end of May. Our next youth club meeting will be June 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the SPJST Hall.

We have some wonderful news to share with you again. We have a graduate from Stroman High School who was born in Czechoslovakia.

Leona Matl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zdenek Matl, graduates as· Valedic­ torian, later this month, and has also received some scholarships. Leona came to this country with her parents at the age of 8 years. Her brother, Peter Matl, graduated from Stroman High School, one year ago, as Salutatorian. We honored him by having a covered dish supper and giving him a gift from our Society. He spoke to us about his life in Czechos­ lovakia before coming to America at the age of 9 years.

President Marjorie Matula an­ nounced that we will honor Leona in the same manner as we did her brother.

We will have a covered dish supper at 6:30 p.m. on June 21, at the Victoria County REA Auditorium. This is also our regular CHS meeting night. For the program, John Novak, our member from Port Lavaca, will play his accor­ dion for a Czech sing-a-long. Song sheets will be provided.

At a recent meeting, Doris Elsik reported that $498 was spent on 27 rolls of Micro Film which were donated to the Victoria College Library. Twenty of the 1900 Soundex Reels will be donated to the Victoria Public Library at a cost of $250.

The Micro Film from 1917 through 1922, on the copies of the Czech newspapers of the Novy Domov, Nasinec, Obzar, Slovan and Svoboda will be donated to the History Depository Department of Victoria College Library, for the use of the general public.

These items are among Research Material donated from 1987 to the present time; so far, $1,348 has been spent for this period of time. We have a very busy and progressive organiza­ tion.

Program Chairman Millicent Bryar­ ly, spoke to us on the program· titled "LET FREEDOM RING," which is about Czechoslovakia's new-found freedom. We hope to get the film on this subject, sometime in the near fu­ ture.

Please keep in mind the date and new location of our upcoming Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival, to be held at the Victoria Community Cen­ ter, 2905 E. North Street on October 21, 1990. New attractions are being added this year and we hope to make it the biggest and best so far. Don't for­ get our next meeting on June 21. New members are always welcome to join us.

Půda, ve slovníku minulých let nazývaná zemí - živitelkou, nevhodnými způsoby hospodaření, kdy bylo vše podřízené neustálému zvyšování produkce, a to za každou cenu, rychle ztrácí svou úrodnost. Údaje o znečištění životního prostředí přece jen v poslední době (pravděpodobně i díky událostem v SSSR a potřebě dodat politickému systému v ČSSR zdání přestavbového vývoje) mohly být postupně zveřejňovány a do určité míry kritizovány, i když vždy se značnou dávkou osobní odvahy.

V trezorech s těmi nejpevnějšími dveřmi však nejdéle ležely hrozivé statistiky analyzující zdravotní stav obyvatelstva. Dokazovaly totiž, že se v Československu od roku 1970 neprodlužuje střední délka života, že Čechoslováci v porovnání s ostatními Evropany mají téměř největší "naději" zemřít na kardiovaskulární choroby a rakovinu, a to poměrně v mladém věku, že v počtu úmrtí na 100 000 obyvatel zaujímá Československo ostudné šestémísto na světě. Souvislost s nízkou kvalitou žívotniho prostředí je zřejmá.

Jaká jsou východiska z této neutěšené situace? Nabízí se restrukturalizace národního hospodářství, investice do ekologickéhostrojírenství, ekologizace zemědělství, spolupráce se zahraničím... Toho všeho chce nové vedení státu využít. Lepší životní prostředí si dává do programu také většina nově vznikajících politických stran.

Ti, kteří se vyznají v komplikovaných souvislostech přírodních zákonů a nastávajících konfliktech ekonomických a ekologických zájmů, však nehýří op­ timismem -tvrdí, že opojnost úspěchu (bude-li)zažijí až příští generace.

VilémSouček nej-, neměli knihkupci s jejím prode­ jem žádné starosti. Malé národy potřebují upevňovat sebevědomía lidé si proto s potěšením přečetli, co je v je­ jich zemi ve srovnání s Evropou či světem největšího, nejmenšího, nejvyššího, nejkurióznějšího...

Spisovatelka a novinářka Eva Tehdy si asi jen nemnoho Kantůrková začala publikovat v 60. zasvěcenýchuvědomilo, že toho v této letech. Po vstupu vojsk Varšavské knize dost chybí. Existovalo ještě smlouvy do Československa v srpnu mnoho československých nej-, ale 1968 však nesouhlasila s politikou nor­ nepovzbuzujících, smutných a malizace a distancovala se od tehdejší alarmujících, a proto tajných a uta­ oficiální čs. literatury. That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Boží velíkonoční.) as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religiousmeaning- a solemn day. Ad­ ding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursu­ ing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting vic­ tim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to givean outlet to the vivacityof the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia,it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Václav) or St. Anna, it is not uncom­ mon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Satur­ day and named Josefská, Václavskáor Annenská zábava. The word "zábava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are con­ gratulated as follows: Všecko nejlepší k svátku- Everything best for your Namesday.

As you can see, the above English transla­ tion of "mnoho štěstí, zdraví a spoko­ jenosti" is not a literal one. Learn the
