This approaching weekend of May 4th, 5th and 6th is the beginning of Czech Festivals in Texas, headed mainly by The Ennis Polka Festival and Czech Fest in Rosenberg. We hope the weather will cooperate with all these activities scheduled in various parts of Texas. Probably, the rough weather is on its way out, let's hope so!

*** Two famous sculptures' of George Washington might never have been fashioned had it not been for an insurance policy on the life · of the renowned French sculptor, J .A. Aritoine Houdon.

Houdon was recognized as the world's greatest sculptor of his day, when Thomas Jefferson asked him 'to. come to America in 1785 to do a statue and bust of George Washington, who had then retired from public life.

The trouble was that Houdon had been disappointed not 'long before when the Russian government failed to pay him for similar work done at its request. He demanded pre - payment from America, and what's more, consented to make the hazardous voyage "to Virginia and its savages" only if the U.S. government would pay a large additional sum to his family if he died during the trip. The Americans wanted Houdon at any price and so agreed to all his terms.

The astute Jefferson recognized the risk involved and knew that life insurance, then still in its formative stages in the United States, was the only means · of covering it. He, therefore, contacted people he knew in London to find out what the terms would be to insure Houdon's life. He added that Houdon was "between 30 and 35 years of age, healthy enough, and would be absent from France about six months." Although history does not record the name · of the company that issued the insurance, a short time later the insurance was approved and Houdon came to America.

Those who have seen the marble statue of George Washington in the Virginia State Capital Building at Richmond, or the bust of the Father of his Country at Mount Vernon, have tangible evidence ofHoudon's genius.

It is a well - known fact that all around us in this world, men and women are cracking up. Why? Psychiatrists, we are informed, think that the main reason is that they feel inadequate. Many believe that they are born to failure and, therefore, think "failure" from day to day.

Others are convinced that the burden of life is too much for them to bear and still others think that they have problems which do riot have any possibility of solution, and that their guilt, actual and imagined is too depressing.

The fact is that these individuals are really riot failures as they imagine themselves to be. Many of them earn a good living, and are reasonably happy and adapt themselves to the social scheme of life. But what breaks them down is the gnawing feeling of the fear of failure --- not failure itself --- and this is the ultimate end.

Avoid such feelings because they are riot healthy. We all battle with such a detrimental thought now and then. However, try to avoid brooding over it, try to overcome irritation and worry and arouse yourself to a new enthusiasm!

The problem with many ofus is that we want to accomplish many things but are riot willing to pay the price. If life were a game in which the rewards were handed out on a silver platter to anyone who happened to ask for them, lots of folks would sleep in rose beds.

However, unfortunately, we have to reckon with the thorns. · · "He who would climb a tree must grasp its branches --- not the blossoms," said Thackeray. Which means that we must pull ourselves up over the rough places, and not expect simply to coast downhill all the time.

We get mostly what we go after--- if we go after it hard enough. About the only thing that has ever come into our life without effort is trouble; and much of that can be traced to a desire to take hold of the blossoms instead · of grasping the branches.

Thorns serve a purpose. They teach us that even in plucking 'roses, one must go about it with care and skill and practical knowledge -- · or get stuck.

Lodge No.125, Westhoff Honors Edward J. Lukas, 96 Edward Joseph Lukas was born March 29, 1894, at Shiner, Texas, the eldest son of Joseph and Rosina Lukas. Also, to this uriion three childrenwere born. They were Amalie (Annie), Louise and Joseph (Joe) Jr. The familywas engaged in farming in a small community near Shiner. Mr. Ed and his sisters and brother attended school at Meehnah and Mangnus, In 1907 his father sold their farm in Shinerand boughtland fromMr. Houston about a mile west of Westhoff.

This land is still owned by family membersand Mr. Ed still makeshis home on his original property.

He recalls that in 1907, he, his father, and brother left Shiner in wagons bringing with them their chickens, livestock, tools, and other farm implements. On their way to Westhofffrom Shiner they camped out in the Cheapside area· over night.

Edward J. l.ukas Whentheyarrivedat theirnew farm, the men wentto workimmediatelyto builda barn and smokehouse.They also built a small buildingto live in while they were getting settled and beginning their farm operations. Mr. Ed's mother and two sisters cameby train as soonas theyhad a place to live in. The smokehousewas a very important buildingto the early set­ tlers so they would have a place to preserve theirmeats;of course,therewere no refrigerationin those days.

When Mr. Ed was about 13 years old he started school in Westhoff. He remembers it was a long frame one roombuildinglocated about where the present school now stands. There were 57 students. His teacher's name was Ms. Florence Chess, later the building was divided irito two rooms and they had a man teacher. One day he and his friend G.T. Lord were caught chewing tobacco. Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulasgave a report and made presentations to District I Treasurer Betty Suehs of checks from the Supreme Lodge; $800 went to District General Fund and $2,908.50 for District Youth Fund.

District I Rest Homes Director Melvin Skrabanek gave his report.

Youth Program "Twelve Days· of School" was presented by New Tabor Lodge No. 17 Youth Oub. The program was enjoyed by everyone.

Under old business there was a discussion on officers' salaries.

Under new business -- Auditing Committee reported all books were in good standing.

The 1990 fall meeting has been set for Sunday, September 23 at 1 :30p.m. hosted by Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikr, of Temple, honored us with his presence and his informative message.

District IV Director Stanley Broz, of l.owake, was also present as were all the District IV officers.

President Elizabeth Walther, of Lodge No. 49, worked hard to make the meeting a success, with the help of our Hall Committee, namely, Bernie Maracek, James Teplicek and their co - workers.

Beverlyand James Teplicekwere in charge of the festive decorations.

Lula Marace k and Elizabeth Urbanek kept the kitchen operating smoothly with the help of Joyce Mikeska, Emma Havlak and Betty Holubec.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: The May 6th monthly meeting, which will start at 2 p.m. in thelodge hall, will be a special day for Mother's Day to be remembered as well as 50 year membership pin recipients. An officer of the Supreme Lodge will be present to make the 50 - year pin presentations. The agenda, being as full as it is scheduled to be, reports and items needing immediate attention will be taken care of, ONLY, during the course of business.

Members who have riot attended meetings in a long while are urged to come up and visit.

A fraternal hour and LIGHT luncheon is scheduled after the business meeting.

In a previous letter, this writer expounded on the words "svačina" (as a fictional detective calls them) and only allowed these to pass through their heads at a speed of light. In several dictionaries, this writer has found that the word "luncheon" (from the French word for "lump") means a light meal or repast between regular meals. It is ALMOST the equivalent to the well-known English morning or afternoon tea. The word "SVAČINA" according to the Czech dictionary is a morning or afternoon tea or coffee. It is a little more than what we, today, call a "coffee break" In the process of writing these lengthy verbal expressions of literal statements called letters, this writer took the liber­ ty to use the word "luncheon" IN THE PLACE OF "svačina.". Now, to clarify and make it easier for all to understand better (or as the Yiddish would say more better yet already") this writer will use the words "light luncheon" in the place of the words ''luncheon" and "svačina,'' henceforth. Also, these luncheons were NEVER and this writer states again NEVER were meant to be a FULL meal with all of the trimmings that one could "GORGE" oneself on. AND, just becaues there are more than one cake, pie or other pastry (or as some call them "sweets" or "goodies") on the buffet or serving table, it does NOT mean that one has to eat all of them by oneself nor does one have to have a ser­ ving of each and every item or more.

These items are there so everyone would have something and there would be a choice to choose from PERIOD!!!

Enough said on this subject and this writer hopes he DOES NOT have to redefine these words again in the future or ever, again.

Lodge No. 33, Annual Fish Fry The Annual Fish Fry of Lodge No. 33 at Bleiblerville Hall will take place on Sunday, May 20, 1990.

The festivities will begin with fish fry to go from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., serving a complete meal consisting of fish, slaw, chips, plenty of bread and catsup (for all you can eat) will begin at 11 :30 a.m. Cakes, pies and kolache will also be available.

In addition, a Horseshoe Tournament is scheduled with registration at 1 p.m. and play time, 2 p.m.

All members are asked to bring cakes, pies and kolache.

On April 9, 1990 Lodge 88 had their regular monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m.

President Jerry Ermis · opened the meeting with the flags being presented by Marlene and Darlene Migl and Crystal Wallace.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the names of the deceased members, and minutes of the March meeting which were approved as read. She also read communications from Brother Joe Miksch and family who thanked everyone who showeď their concern for him during his illness; also a thank vou from Jewell Russell.

The financial report was given by Dear Members: Financial Secretary and Treasurer Reports from the monthly meeting and special dinner (hosted by the Shirley Stonaker which was a good present and past presidents serving report.

Board Chairman Karl lindemann announced many things the board does, so many of us wouldn't know this uriless someone tells it.

Karl said the next big event at Lodge 88 is the opening of the beautiful swimming pool; the pool will open the last two weekends in May, prior to our official opening on June 3rd which is "Splash Day and Homecoming," always a big success for Lodge 88.

President Jerry Ermis called a meeting for the Executive Committee for April 18, 1990. The following decisions were made for June 3, 1990 big celebration: The menu -- served by Wehring Catering Service consisting of barbecued brisket, green beans (Royal's favorite dish), parsley potatoes, slaw, Jalapenia pepper, onions and pickles. This food is FREE to AIL MEMBERS, who pay their $6 ANNUAL DUES, otherwise it's $4.50 for adults and non - members; $3 for non - member children.

Games will be played from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. by Social Night Committee.

A beautiful occasion when Jimmy and Julie Anders became proud parents to their second baby daughter, Courtney Lynn, 7 pounds and 9 ounces on April 9, 1990. The proud grandparents are Ernest and Margie Anders, also uncles and aunts, namely, Daniel and Mona Anders, Shirley and Ike and Gale Lucas, all SPJST members. Congratulations!

Homer Alexander was awarded a certificate from the American Association · of Retired Persons Program Department in gratitude for dedicated service in arranging, scheduling, registering and collecting fees for the "55 Alive" mature driving course; these courses are held at Lodge 88.

The Choral Group and the Czech Concert Orchestra are busy rehearsing for the Czech Fest in Rosenberg, Texas for May 4, 5 and 6 which is always a very nice affair. Don't miss it!

Also at our April 9 meeting, we had reports from DYC Marie Stayton, Scholarship Committee by Josephine Pflughaupt, Helen Hegwood on insurance report, and Mary Kosut on benevolence.

The reports on our sick members were made: Frankie Bravenec who was real ill and had 2 surgeries, is doing fine. He's at home which is the best medicine and, of course, Almeda .is taking good care of him. I know they are both anxious to get back in the "groove." The same goes for Joe Miksch. Carol Havemann was in the hospital but is doing fine at home now. She 's being missed in the youth club. She works hard with the youngsters.

Aunt Annie Baethe isn't doing so well, and neither is Joe Ehlers but with our prayers, if it's God's will, they'll be well soon.

Mrs. Royal (Kim) Warnasch, Jr. had back surgery and "Peanuts," her husband said, she's progressing very well. She's a Special Ed teacher which is a good profession. Royal and Laura· Bell are baby - sitting with the children. What a joy!

We will miss Agnes Lesak Pederson very much because she was a faithful: Birthday Club member, also, at one: time, sang with the Choral Group and also was a sales representative. Agnes· Lesak Pederson, 73, died April 16, 1990. Survivors include her husband, Odel Pederson; sons, Raymond Lesak and wife Grace, Eugene Vincent Lesak and wife Jeanie, David Lesák, lina Lesak and wife Denise; daughter, linda Raye Rivera; sisters, Rose Mikeska Glisson, Marie Saunders; brother, Pete Kucera; 5 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Czech Heritage Society, and Catholic Daughters. Vigil services were held at 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, April 17 at Pat H. Foley Chapel in Houston. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m.

Financial Secretary's report was read by Sister Rosie Tumis.

Board of Trustees and Bar reports were read by Brother Henry Hennis.

Youth Club report was read by Matt Mabry. The whole youth club wished a most happy birthday, on this Sunday, to Youth Club Member Phillip Tumis.

Sick Committee Report -- Mr. Charles Motl and Michael Schiewert were in the hospital. We hope all are well on the road to recovery at this time.

At this time, we are planning a surprise birthday party for Charlie Bragg with his wife, Geneva, and their four children in at­ tendance. We are hoping for a large participating on that evening, April 27th, for a super time. The secondary family night will be held on Friday night, May 11th. It starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m, Many of our members are planning to attend the pre - festival party to be held on Friday night, May 4th for the start of the Ennis Polka Festival. Inez is planning to go with several of our members to this party. If you wish to attend with us, contact Inez at the lodge, (817) 465-8538. We are also planning to attend the parade the next morning and spend time at one of the dances to be held in the afternoon, on Saturday. Then, that evening, we will head back to Arlington, to Lodge 183 for the dance to be held at our lodge that evening. Whew! It wears me out, just thinking about all those activities, but it sounds like a lot fun.

AARP Defensive Driving Course As many of you- know, the AARP Defensive Driving Course for those of us over 50 years of age has been closed down, at least temporarily, until further action by the Texas legislature.

This is a blow to senior citizens who have a big interest in this program -­ such items as lower automobile insurance, removal of speeding violations from your driving records, cancellationof speeding violationfine.

If each of us would flood the Legislative Branch of our state government by writing a letter letting it be known how this discreminates against the senior population of the State of Texas, it possibly could help reinstate this program.

The following is a letter which I have written to the Director of Legislative liaison in an attempt to revive the Defensive Driving Course as conducted by AARP:

Box 12428 Austin, Texas 78711 Dear Mr. Roberts: I am writing to urge Governor Cements to open the special Session SB - 56 spnsored by Senator Green which would correct inequities in legislation passed during the 71st legislative Session which put AARP's 55 Alive - Mature Driving Course out of business.

We, at SlavonicBenevolent Order of the State of Texas, Lodge No. 88 Houston (SPJST) are very concerned about this issue.

Our lodge furnishes classroom space on a no charge basis to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to conduct these classes as a community service to senior citizens who are voters in the community. These voters are very disappointed in that many feel that a right has been denied them. Classes conducted at our lodge have averaged over 125 students for the past three · years.

The senior citizens of this community urge that Governor Cements put this matter high on the agenda.

Trudy Krenek read the minutes of the - last meeting and Jennifer Gold gave the treasurer's report.

Everyone congratulated Jennifer Gold for being one of our four local members to receive the SPJST College Scholarship.

Our District Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek was at the meeting to discuss YAD and youth camp.

Everyone received their new YAD Rule Book. Mrs. Skrabanek told everyone that the special category at YAD, this year, is "Storytelling."

The Decorating Committee did a nice job decorating the hall.

In March, we went ice skating to Austin and really had a good time.

In April, we met in landa Park for a cookout with our parents. Odvolání nebylo možné, protože nebylo se kam odvolat!

Naše ekonomika byla založena na nesmyslnýchzákladech. Vyráběli jsme to, co nám bylo nadiktováno, na co jsme ale nikdy neměli. Bylijsme nuceni vyrábět produkty, na které jsme suroviny dováželi a které jsme navíc vůbec nepotřebovali.

Naše hospodářství, které před válkou bylo na předním místě ve světě se ocitlo svou "vyspělostí" na místě afrických států. Nebylo možné už takovouto situaci udržet!

Džbán slzí a vzteku lidu začal přet'ěkat , Lid Československa, proslulý svou pracovitostí a kultůrou, má sklánět hlavy a učit se od nedobrých vzorů. Ne, to už nebylo možné přenést přes srdce dobrého českého člověka.

Přišel leden 1989...

16. leden - 20., výročí upálení se studenta, Jana Palacha na protest proti vstupu vojsk Varšavského paktu.

Pražští studenti uctili jeho památku na místě jeho smrti na Václavském náměstí v Praze a byli brutálně rozehnáni naší policií.

Totéž se odehrálo 21.8.1989 (20. výročí okupace armád Varšavského paktu). Taktéž byli občané při. své pokojné demonstraci na Václavskem. náměstí rozehnáni policií.

Nic se naší vládě nelíbilo. Byla proti demokracii a proti lidu. Tito lidé, kteří už léta trpěli nesvobodou začali se pro­ bouzet.

Přišel 17.listopad 1989. - 50. výročí smrti Jana Opletala - mezinárodně uznáván jako Den studentstva. Tohoto studenta 17.11.1939 zastřelili němectí fašisté.

Toho dne studenti v Praze (i v jiných městech) pořádali na počest Jana Opletala povolenou manifestaci (pietní) u jeho hrobu. Cestou do centra Prahy byly poblíž Národního divadla zastaveni kordonem elitních jednotek policajtů a ze všech stran obklíčeni.

Bezbranní studenti byli těmito policaj­ ty brutálně napadeni. Podle šetření prokuratury se zjistilo, že je na ně poslal ÚV KSČ. Byli spošty zraněných - zatím stav není vyčíslen asi kolem 200 studentů muselo vyhledat doktory. Mnozí se báli, aby nebyli kvůli manifestaci persekvováni, proto se k ošetření v nemocnicích

komunismu (několikrát byl za to ve vězení) dosáhl vrcholu. Po abdikaci

presidenta Husáka 10.12. byl Václav Havel téměř jednomyslně považován za nástupce na místo presidenta nového. Jím byl skutečně 29.12.1989 zvolen. Jenže do té doby byla ještě · velká spousta práce. Dvakrát byla změněna vláda, než se došlo ke správnému složení. Tato nová, současná se nazývá Vláda národního porozumění (sympathy) a všichni jí věříme.

Byl zrušen článek 4 (Article number 4) z naší Ústavy (constitution) o vedoucí úloze komunistů a tím padla nadvláda jedné strany. Už nejsme "komunistickou společností" jak si to bývalé Vedení rádo představovalo.

Počaly se vytvářet další nové strany a organisace, které přispívají k dobrému duchu naší nové doby.

Začínáme se učit demokracii, začínáme dýchat svobodně. Nejen tím, že máme volné hranice na Západ (Rakousko, Německo), ale prostě tím, že se stáváme rovnoprávnými partnery · všem lidem na světě.

Teď se, Jerry, vrátím k začátku dopisu. Nyní mohu říci, že na Západ můžeme kdykoliv odjet. Bariéry mezi národy jsou odbourány! Železná opona zrezivěla!

Návrat do bankovního a finančního Světa

Mezinárodní měnový fond a Světová banka projednávají přihlášku Československake vstupu do těchto in­ stitucí.
