*** The SPJST Publication Committee met for their annual meeting Saturday, March 31st at the SPJST Supreme Lodge Headquarter's building in Temple.

The Czech Heritage Society · of Texas (CHSO'I) was also meeting there in the Assembly Room.

Supreme Lodge Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska was presentto open the building for all of us. The cordial welcome and hospitality by library - Archives Museum Curator Thelma Groppell, Barbara Wright (secretary to the Supreme Lodge president) and Brother Mikeska were greatly appreciated by all the attendees .

Brother Mikeska spoke to the Publication Committee in the Board Room at the beginning of their meeting and discussed future plans for our SPJST Society and the part that ?ublication Committee and Vestnik play in the overall picture · of our Society.

The Publication Committee members appreciated his remarks and certainly took his words seriously.

They also discussed the status of the Vestnik and mail problems, etc.

More details will be given of the Publication Committee meeting in their minutes.

Joy in work, the idea ofjoy iri one's work has long been ridiculed, but nevertheless it is fast taking root in the minds of many and proving its value and merit. Whether you work in an office or in a factory, you can take cheerfulness, willingness, and eagerness with you. The day's burdens are lightened, fatigue is kept away and depression is not given a chance to envelop you. Such an attitude riot only makes you good company for yourself, but for others as well. It soon becomes contagious and your associates adopt the idea. It is then that ideal working conditions are brought about.

Dissatisfaction is responsible for most aversion to work. When we drown this dissatisfaction in a deter­ mination to make our work pleasant by bringing it into an atmosphere of joy and happiness, then and only then can we expect to live life as it should be liv­ ed.

Is life insurance really a good buy for a woman? The precise answer would depend upon the woman, and her circumstances, but here are a few general statements which hold true.

First, any woman who is the sole support of a child, an aged parent; or any other dependent, should have life insurance to provide for her dependents, of course.

Second, most women, whether they are married or single, could definitely use additional income during their later years. life insurance is the most practical method · of providing this extra income, especially annuities.

Third, any woman, married or single, should have at least basic insurance coverage · for final expenses.

And married women need life insurance because the husband loses the marital deduction as allowed by law in the event that she dies first.

Fourth, any woman who has a regular income is wise to put some of it away for emergencies and for retirement. Again, life insurance is the most practical way to do this.

Some individuals consider buying life insurance is gambling, but NOI' buying it, certainly IS!

*** Yesterday • Today • Tomorrow.

There are two days in every week about which we should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

Oné of these days is yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains.

Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow with its possible adversaries, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance.

Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate conťrol. · Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only one day -- today.

Any man can fight the battles of just one day. It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities --yesterday and tomorrow -­ that we break down.

It is not the experience oftoday that drives men mad -- it is remorse· or bitterness for something which happened yesterday and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.

Let us, therefore, live but one day at a time!

For some time all of us (sales representatives) . were too sold · on "rolling over" · only the members' earned value and thereby our reserves were being left at "status quo".

SP JST members from across the State of Texas gathered at lodge No. 24 in Cyclone, Texas, to participate in the annually held SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament. · We want to take this opportunity to thank the players for taking their time to participate in the sixth SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament. The warm spring day turned out to be very cold and many players, not prepared, were in need of their jackets before the

end of the day. However, the cold weather had no effect on the spirit of these players, because there was a warm feelingof fraternalism among all of the participants; through this kind of activity, we hope to preserve our heritage and to share fellowshipamong our members.

Tournamentparticipants and guests enjoyed a day filled with exciting competition and good sportsmanship.

The District N spring meeting will be held on Sunday, April 22, 1990 at the SPJST Lodge No. 49 hall in Rowena.

Registration will start at 11 a.m., with a catered lunch at 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Business meeting starts at 2:00p.m.

We also have a program planned which includes the election and installation of District N officers and rest home director, plus a candlelighting ceremony in memory of all deceased members in 1989.

The District IV Youth Club members will present a skit.

We are looking forward to seeing all members at our meeting.

THE SPJSTI.ODGENO. 10, a Czechfraternal organization, recently donated an informative book on the history of the SPJST to the St. Paul and Shiner High School libraries. The books entitled "A History of the SPJST -- A Texas Otronicle 1897 -1980," willbe availáble for students to read or use for research purposes. Easter Bake Sale -­ Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 Dear Members: We extend a special invitation tó our Benefit Bake Sale on April 14th at Rudolph's Market at 2924 Elm Street in Dallas. This is the Saturday before Easter Sunday. We hope our members will do some extra baking and donate toward our sale. It will be appreciated.

Minutes of our last meeting were read and correspondence included notes from the Kartous family and Scarborough Fair.

President Olson announced that Entertainment Committee meeting will be held Monday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m., and Entertainment Chairmrn Cheri Petr then gave her report ..

House Committee Report: Brother Salac and Brother Olson "made ready" the air - conditioning system for the warm weather ahead as well as installed new lights above the serving area by the kitchen. Brother Salac alsc mowed the yard.

LODGE 88 CZECH CLASS SPRING, 1990

Czech Class Activities At Lodge No. 88, Houston The average attendance at our Czech study class is 22. The enrollment is 27. Of the absentee list, three are traveling in Europe and erijoying their jaunt.

Great interest is shown in reliving and relating experiences while growing up as a member' of a Czech family. The students wonder at the complexities of the grammar and freely admit the language is one of the most difficult to learn. This, however, is no hindrance because every class period is filled with eager members ready to absorb more of the background, history and culture · of their ancestors.

To celebrate the 73rd founding of Lodge No. 133, the members met on March 18, 1990 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center in San Antonio, Texas to share a meal.

Prospective members were invited to join the celebration.

Forty- five members and ten guests joined in the celebration; among the guests was Sister Thelma Hrncir, District VII director.

After dinner, our monthly lodge meeting was held at 1 :50 p.m.

President Anthony Trilicek called the membership to order. Pledge of Allegiancewas recited and a moment of silence was held for all deceased members, especially for Sister Henrietta Kalmus who died that month.

Roll call of officers showed all present.

Our secretary read the minutes and treasurer's report was also given.

Correspondence was read from Sister Ruby Stavinoha and Sister Marcella Kleprlik. A letter from the Home Office was read in reference to the genealogyof families whichwill be put on computer.

Sister Juliana, from the Czech Cultural and Education Foundation, sent a thank you to the lodgefor its ad in the activity pamphlet.

Congratulations were extended to Louis and Theresa Jasek who celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary and to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Holubwhowere celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Sister Viola Kurtz presented the Holubs with a corsage and boutonniere from Lodge No. 133.

Sister Thelma Hrncir then gave an overview of SPJST and important happenings in our Society, among these were: A. The Referendum on the Recreational Facility Area (RFA) for SPJST B. Contributions to the Battleship Texas C. Establishment of the Czech Chair D. Making of the Czech Tapes E. Home Mortgage Loans Brother Don Netek questioned Sister ThelmaHrncir on the amount of college scholarship offered. Members seemed to agree that, in today's economy, $500 was not a sufficient amount for a scholarship. Sister Thelma said she would relay the idea to the Supreme Lodge.

Sister Frankie Campbell, youth leader of Lodge No. 133 and a sales representative, told members what was going on in the youth club. She encouraged members to find prospective members. She also outlined the key factors of the Universal life Policy.

Brother Trilice k reminded the members, there would NOT be an April meeting since Easter Sunday falls on the third Sunday. He wished all members a Happy Easter.

Since there was no new business, birthday wishes were extended to members celebrating March birthdays; they included Shirley Burrows, Alma Trilicek, Michelle Popp and Nicholas Morrissey.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith, from Wallis, comes to have Bible Study; in'-the afternoon, Lorene Novosad, Lydia Hortman, Ida Gasch, Jean Jacobsen, Ida Sliva, Donna Rice and Frances Muzny come to play social games with the residents.

The Catholic ladies, Presbyterian ladies, Sunshine ladies, and the Immanuel ladies came on Thursday afternoons to have crafts at the rest home.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary; in the afternoon, Lydia Hortman, Melva Hastings and Freda Klawitter come to roll hair.

Monday afternoon, March 12, the Hope Lutheran Church women and Rev. Jensen, from Beasley, came to have services and brought cookiesand had a social afterwards.

Tuesday afternoon, March 13, Elton Tielkecame to play the accordion and sang old - time songs with our residents.

Thursday morning, March 15, Patty and Peggy came to sing. The singing was beautiful.

Friday afternoon, March 16, the home had a combination St. Patrick's Day Party and a birthday party for Administrator Harvey Marx. "Happy Birthday" was sung by residents and staff members, Gladys Hix presented Mr. Marx a birthday card from all the residents, Martha Marx had a birthday cake which was decorated with a four-leaf clover; cake, ice cream, punch and coffee were served to everyone.

Wednesday afternoon, March 21, LouisSmith, Annie Kramer and Hilda Clark attended the senior citizens social which was held at the Presbyterian Church, Thursday afternoon, March 22, Garland Hurtye brought her pet dog for therapy for the residents.

Tuesday evening, March 27, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents.

Thursday morning, March 29, Louis Smith, James Little, William Pendleton, O.D. Tucker, Joseph Koci and Martha Marx (SAD) went riding through the Brazos Bend State Park.

Malcik .. Stastny Family Reunion The descendants and friends · of Tomas and Marie Stastny Malcik will hold their annual reuriion at the D. Brown Memorial library in Rosebud, Texas on April 22, 1990, beginning at 10 a.m. Bring your favorite dish and join us·for lunch about 12:30 p.m. The business meeting will precede the lunch. Marie Stastny, born July 9, 1859, immigrated from Ratibor, Moravia in 1878. Tomas Malcik, born October 27, 1856, in House No. 28 in Hostalkova, Moravia, came to this country in 1880.

Records in the Wesley, Texas Brethren Church show that Marie and Tomas were married on July 23, 1882, in the home of Mr. Repka of Nelsonville, Texas by Rev. Jindrich Juren. Witnesses signing the marriage certificate were Jiri Rudolf and Tom Repka.

Children of Tomas and Marie were Joseph, who married Frances Surovík; Mary, who married John Marecek; John, who married Rosa Bubela and, after her death, married Teresa Machalek; Theresa, who married John Slovacek; Tomas, who married Anna Pomykal; William, who married Rosa Marecek; Edward, who married Matilda Schiller; Anna, who married

Adolph Pomykal and, after his death, married Frank Schiller, Sr.; Albina; Frank, who married Vlasta Schiller and Antonin, who died in infancy.

Letters From The Youth District VII Youth Club Meeting The SPJST District VII Youth Club members met on March 25, 1990 at Bavarian Village in New Braunfels.

Twenty youth club members enjoyed the social gathering..

The youth had yogurt at TCBY before going to the movie at Brauntex Theater. The members watched "The · little Mermaid" or "Tango and Cash" at the movie. Everyone enjoyed the yogurt and movie.

The youth leader of lodge 133 is Frankie Campbell, who is assisted by her daughter, Cheryl Morrissey. The youth membershave worked on several projects during the year with their leaders. They have made tamale peo­ ple, driftwood center pieces, junk col­ lages and even baked kolache for the adult members to enjoy. There is always a lot of fun to be had.

You can bring your friends. They might also become interested in the SPJST. It's a wonderful way to make new friends and enjoy various outings and activities. Then there's always camp to lookforward to in the summer time.

So come on by, we'll be looking for you!

Reunions Mikush Reunion The 29th annual Mikush family reunion has been set for July 1, 1990 at the American legion Hall in Hallettsville, Texas, beginning at 10:30a.m. until ?? You are asked to bring a covered dish. Several years ago many families became involved in compiling the family history. After several years of researching, they will have the books at the reunion for the familiesto proofread and update them before going to press. The families' histories involves: Stepan Zajicek, Joseph, Martin and Paul Mikush, the Galetkas, the Gebauers, the Sklars and the Machacs; all these families came from what is known as Czechoslovakia.

Red Ranger School Reunion

A reminder to all ex - students, teachers and friends. The fourth Red Ranger school reunion will be held May 6, 1990 at Flag Hall SPJST lodge No. 24 in Cyclone. The day's activities begin with a parade through downtown at 10:00 a.m. Then on to the Oty Park for music, games, food, arts and crafts, Dear Members, On March 27, 1990, we met at antique farm equipment exhibits, and linden Hall and we decorated Easter children's barnyard throughout the day until 5:00 p.m. Tournaments eggs for the Moody Nursing Center.

Brother Kalmus was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta Kalmus on March 4, 1990.

He is survived by his son, Stanley Anton Kalmus of New York Oty, New York; and sisters - in law, Regina Kutach, Grace Kasper and lillian.

Kalich, all of Schulenburg and brother - in - law, Charles Krenek of Flatonia.

A rosary was recited on Thursday, March 29 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 7 p.m.

Funeral services were held March 30 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 12:00 noon. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park.

Brother Alfred Kalmus has been a memberofSPJSTLodge No. 133 since 1932. He and his wife, Henrietta Kalmus, were active members and were always ready to help out whenever necessary. We shall all miss them.

Schůze byla zahájena předsedou George Pavelkou ve 3 hodiny v neděli 1, dubna, o hodinu později, protože pár členů byli v "Long Star Camp" v La Grange, Texas a pak příjeli na čás.

Povstáním jsme vzdali čest naší vla­ jce; nosiči vlajek byli Erin Škrabánek a James Kortis.

Tajemnice Delores Škrábanek přečetla protokol z minulé schůzea byl přijat tak, jak byl napsán.

Přijali jsme členku Carolyn Fisher do řádu číslo 47 od řádu číslo 177.

Předseda Pavelka poděkoval Doris Kubánové, která darovala vlajku na památku na manžela Jana Kubana.

Sestra Judy Pechalová podala zprávy za dozorčí výbor. Zprávy úředníků také byly dobré.

Návštěvu jsme měli Ernest a Angeline Kristinek z Lubbock od řádu číslo 157, Mary Ann Greger, Martha Tanner, Joseph Morris, Catherine Moody z řádu číslo 87, Larry a Bar­ bara Poulter, Irene Beran, Ann Balusek a Jimmy Schroeder.

Na lístku nemocných jsou Calvin Škrabánek, George Pavelka, Theresa Carper, Ann Chlápek a John Kohut.

Narozeniny budou v dubnu slavit Helen Wylie, Albina Mikeska, Anna Raska, Ruth Kohutek, Marie Pavelká, Judy Simy, Pam Morris, Frank Marek a Anton Vítek.

Výročí sňatku slavit budou pan a paní Wesley Tupy, Bob and Mary Vašíček, Gene a Ann Hejl a WillieE. a Adeline Kohutek.

Dveřní ceny dostali Martha Palla, Monroe Lucko, Nancy Chlápek a Gladys Marek.

Sestra Patsy Koslovský podala dobrou zprávu; měli 38 členů, 10 návštěvníků a 6 dospelých, také měli velíky "Easter egg hunt" (hledání vajíček).

Picník budeme mít 3. června.

Potom jsme měli představení našich "50 - letých" členů; 14 bylo přítomno a 6 se nemohlo dostavit. Předseda Pavelka a tajemnice Delores Škrabánek dali jim oznaky (50-year pins) a korsáž (corsage).

Příští schůzi bude 6. května a budeme slavit "Den matek" (Mother's Day) a budeme mít zase svačinku (covered dish meal) tedy členové přineste svoje nejlepší jídlo na talíři (dish of good food).

Po schůzijsme měli dobrou svačinku a byla také "covered dish" a řád číslo 47 daroval smažené kuřata (fried chicken) a bylo všechno dobré.

Předpokládám, že Jste mne nenavrhli do tohoto úřadu proto, abych vám i já lhal.

Naše země nevzkvétá. Velký tvůrčí a duchovnf potenciál našich národů není smysluplně využit. Celá odvětvi průmyslu vyrábějí věci, o které není zájem, zatímco toho, co potřebujeme, se nám nedostává. Stát, který se nazývá státem dělníků, dělníky ponižuje a vykořisfuje. Naše zastaralé hospodářství plýtvá energií, které máme málo.

Země, která mohla být kdysi hrdá na vzdělanost svého lidu, vydává na vzdělání tak málo, že je dnes na dvaasedmdesátém mistě na ~větě. Zkazil~ jsme si půdu, řeky i lesy, Jež nám na~1 předkové odkázali, a máme dnes neJhorší životní prostředí v celé Evropě.

Dospělí lidé u nás umírají dfiv než ve většině evropských zemi. .

Dovolte mi malý osobní z~1tek: když jsem nedávno letěl do Bratislavy, nalezl jsem si při různých jednáníc~ čas k tomu, abych pohlédl z okna. V1děl jsem komplex Slovnaftu a hned za nim velkoměsto Petržalku. Ale to všechno nenf stále Ještě to

hlavní. Nejhorší je, že žijeme ve zkaženém mravním prostředí. Morálně jsme onemocněli, protože jsme si zvykli něco jiného říkat a něco jiného si myslet. Nauč.iii jsme se v nic nevěřit, nevšímat si jeden druhého, starat se jen o sebe. Pojmy jako láska, přátel­ stvf, soucit, pokora či odpuštění zíratily svou hloubku a rozměr a pro mnohé z nás znamenají jen jakési psycholo­ gické zvláštnosti, anebo se jevf jako zatoulané pozdravy z dávných časů, poněkud směšné v éře počítačů a kos­ mických raket. Jen málokteří z nás do­ kázali nahlas zvolat, že mocní by ne­ měli být všemocní a že zvláštní farmy, které pro ně pěstují ekologicky čisté a · kvalitni potraviny, by měly své produk­ . ty posílat do škol, dětských internátů a nemocnic, když už je naše zerněděl­ stvf nemůže zatim nabízet všem. Do­ savadní režim - vyzbrojen svou pyš­ nou a nesnášenlivou ideologii - poní­ žil člověka na výrobní sílu a přírodu na výrobní nástroj. Zaútočil Um na samu jejich podstatu i na jejich vzájemný vztah. nadaných a svéprávných lidí, důmyslně hospodaficích ve své zemi, , udělal šroubky jakéhosi obludně velkého, rachotícího a páchnoucího síro­ je, 0 němž nikdo neví, jaký má vlastně smysl. Nedokáže nic vfc než zvolna, ale nezadržitelně opotřebovávat sám sebe a všechny své šroubky.

Všichni jsme si totiž na totalitni systém zvykli a přijali ho za nezměnitelný fakt a tím ho vlastně udr­ ·žovali. Jinými slovy: všichni jsme-byf pochopitelně každý v jiné míře - za

chod totalitní mašinérie odpovědni, ni­ ·kdo nejsme jen jejf oběti, ale všichni jsme zároveň jejf mi spolutvůrci.

Proč o tom mluvím: bylo by velmi nerozumné chápat smutné dědictvf posledních čtyřiceti let jako cosi cizí­ ho, co nám odkázal vzdálený pf Ibuz­ ný. Musíme toto dědictví naopak při­ jmout jako něco, čeho jsme se my sa­ . mi na sobě dopustili. Přijmeme-li to tak, pochopíme, že jen na nás všech je, abychom s tím něco udělali. Svádět všechno na předchozí vládce nemů­ žeme nejen proto, že by to neodpoví­ dalo pravdě, ale i proto, že by to mohlo oslabit povinnost, která dnes stojí před každým z nás, totiž povinnost samos­ . tatně, svobodně, rozumně a rychle jednat. Nemylme se: sebelepší vláda, · sebelepší parlament i sebelepší prezi­ dent toho sami mnoho nezmohou. A bylo by i hluboce nesprávné čekat obecnou nápravu jen od nich. Svobo­ da a demokracie znamená přece spo­ , luúčast, a tudiž spoluodpovědnost všech.

Uvědomíme-li si to, pak se nám okamžitě všechny hrůzy, které nová československá . demokracie zdědila, přestanou jevit tak hrůzné. Uvědomi­ me-li si to, vrátí se do našich srdci na­ děje.

V nápravě věci obecných se máme oč opřít. Poslednf doba -a zvláště po­ slednich šest týdnů naši pokojné revo­ luce - ukázala, jak velký obecně lid­ ský, mravni a duchovní náboj a jak vel­ ká občanská kultura dřímaly v naši společnosti pod vnucenou maskou apatie. Kdykoli mi někdo o nás katego­ ricky tvrdil, že jsme tací nebo onací, vždycky jsem namltal, že společnost je velmi tajemné stvořeni a že nikdy není dobré věřit pouze té její tváři, kte­ rou právě ukazuje. Jsem šťasten, že jsem se ner:nýlil. Všude ve světě se lidé diví, kde se v těch poddajných, poní­ žených, skeptických a zdánlivě už v nic nevěficfch občanech Českoslo­ venska vzala náhle ta úžasná sila za několik týdnů zcela slušným a mirumi­ lovným způsobem setřást ze svých

Jak to, že I jejich rodiče - tedy přesně ta generace, kte­ rá byla považována za ztracenou - se k nim přidali? Jak je vůbec možné, že tolik lidí okamžitě pochopilo, co dělat, a nikdo z nich k tomu nepotřebuje žád­ né rady a instrukce?

Po staleUch se vlast­ ně oba naše národy napřlmily samy, neopřeny o žádnou pomoc mocněj­ ších států či velmoci. Zdá se mi, že v tom je velký mravní vklad této chvfle: skrývá v sobě naději, že napříště už nebudemetrpět komplexemtěch, kte­ řr musí trvale někomu za něco děko­ vat. Teď záleží jen na nás, zda se tato naděje naplní a zda se historicky do­ cela novým způsobem probudí naše občanské, národni i politické sebevě­ domí.

Sebevědomineni pýcha.

Právě naopak: Jedině člověk nebe národ v tom nejlepším slova smyslu sebevědomý je schopen naslouchat hlasu druhých, přijimat je jako sobě rovné, odpouštět svým nepřátelům a litovat vlastnichvin. Pokusmese takto chápané sebevědomí vnést jako lidé do života naší pospolitostia jako náro­ dy do našeho chování na mezinárod­ ním jevišti. Jedině tak získáme opět úctu k sobě samým, k sobě navzájem i úctu jiných národů.

Náš stát by už nikdy neměl být přf­ važkem či chudýmpřibuznýmkohoko­ li jiného. Musime sice od jiných mnoho brát a mnohémuse učit, ale musímeto po dlouhé době dělat zase jako jejich rovnoprávní partneři, kteří mají také co nabídnout.

Náš první prezident napsal: Ježíš, nikoli Caesar. Navazovaltím na Chel­ čického i Komenského.Dnestato idea v nás opět ožila. Troufám si říci, že snad dokonce máme možnost šířit ji dál a vnést tak do evropské i světové politiky nový prvek. Z naší země, bu­ deme-li chtít, může už natrvalo vyza­ řovat láska, touha po porozumění,síla

dětf, starýchlidí, žen, nemocných,těž­ ce pracujících, příslušnfků národnfch menšin a vůbec všech občanů, kteřl jsou na tom z jakýchkoli důvodů hůře než ostatnf. Žádné lepšf potraviny či nemocnice už nesmf být výsadou mocných, ale musí být nabídnutytěm, kteří je nejvfc potřebuji.

Jako vrchní velitel branných sil chci být zárukou, že obranyschopnostna­ šeho státu nebude nikomu už zámin­ kou k tomu, aby mařil odvážné mirové iniciativy včetně zkracování vojenské služby, zřizovánf náhradnf vojenské služby a celkové humanizace vojen­ ského života.

V naší zemi je mnoho vězňů, kteří se sice vážně provinili a jsou za to po­ trestáni, kteří však museli projít - na­ vzdorydobrévůli některychvyšetřova­ telů, soudců a především advokátú pokleslou justicí, jež zkracovalajejich práva, a musí žít ve věznicích, které se nesnaží probouzetto lepší, co je v každém člověku, ale naopak lidi poni­ žuj( a fyzickyi duševně ničf.

S ohledem na tuto skutečnostjsem se rozhodl vyhlásit poměrně širokou amnestii. Vězně zároveň vyzývám, aby pochopili, že čtyřicet let špatného vyšetřován(, souzení a věznění nelze odstranitze dne na den, a aby chápali, že všechny urychleně chystané pro­ měny si přece jen vyžádají určitý čas. .

Vzpourami nepomohou ani této spo­ lečnosti, ani sobě. Veřejnost pak žá­ dám, aby se propuštěných vězňů ne­ bála, neztrpčovalajim života pomáha­ la jim v křesťanském duchu po jejich návratu mezi nás nalézat v sobě to, co v nich nedokázaly nalézt věznice: schopnostpokání a touhu řádněžít.

Mým čestným úkolem je posílit au­ toritu naší země ve světě. Rád bych, aby si násjiné státyvážilyzato, že pro­ kážeme porozumění,toleranci a lásku k míru. Byl bych šťasten, kdyby ještě před volbami navštívili naši zemi - byť na jeden jediný.den - papežJan Pavel li. a tibetskýdalajláma. Byl bych šťas­ ten, kdyby se posílily naše přátelské vztahy se všemi národy. Byl bych šťas­ ten, kdyby se nám podařiloještě před volbami navázat diplomatické styky s Vatikánema Izraelem. K míru chci při­ spět i svou zitřejší krátkou návštěvou našich dvou navzájem spřízněných sousedů, totiž Německédemokratické republiky a Spolkové republiky Ně­ mecko. Nezapomenuani na naše dal­ ší sousedy - bratrské Polsko a stále nám bližší Maďarskoa Rakousko.

Na závěr bych rád řekl, že chci být prezidentem, který bude méně mluvit, ale víc pracovat. Prezidentem, který se bude nejen dobře dívat z oken své­ ho letadla, ale který- a to hlavně- bu­ de trvale přítomen mezi svými spolu­ občany a dobřejim naslouchat.

Možná se ptáte, o jaké republice sním. Odpovím vám: O republice sa­ mostatné, svobodné, demokratické, o republice hospodářsky prosperující a zároveň sociálně spravedlivé, zkrátka o republice lidské, která slouží člově­ ku, a proto má naději, že i člověk po­ slouží ji. O republicevšestranněvzdě­ laných lidí, protožebez nich nelzeřešit žádný z našich problémů. Lidských, ekonomických, ekologických, sociál­ nfch i politických.
