Minutes Of District II Spring Meeting Dear Readers: The members " of District II held their annual spring meeting on Sunday, March 18, 1990at Lodge No. '2.9, Taylor.

The meeting was called to order by President D.I. Bohac. Members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, led

by Flag Bearers Tommy Rieger and Jimmy Sheppard, and remained standing for a moment of silence for deceased members.

Lodge No. 29 President Melvin Steger welcomed all members and wished a successful meeting.

District President Bohac thanked the Taylor lodge 29 " officers and members for their time and effort in hosting this meeting.

All District II officers were present including District II Director Willie E. · Kohutek, legal Advisor Sidney Kacir and Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek.

District Secretary Arleen Tschoerner read the minutes of the 1989 District II fall meeting; they were approved. Correspondence was also read.

DYC Patsy Koslovsky gave the youth report and she introduced all the youth club leaders, assistants, also members and their parents were recognized. Patsy mentioned a few upcoming events, namely, District II

YADon July 8 at Elgin, State YADon August 19 in Temple, and State Royalty on August 18 at Seaton lodge No. 47. She also reminded the youth of upcoming District II camp.

Audit Committee Chairman lad Zátopek gave their report and stated the books were in good order.

Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek spoke on behalf of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes and encourged everyone to visit the members residing in them.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek recognized Supreme lodge President Howard l.eshikar, legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek, Publication Committee Member Dorothy Pechal, By - laws Committee Member lad Zatopek, Finance Committee Member Jerry Valchar, State Youth Director Cíaudette Reese and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovský.

Brother Kohutek recognized those members who have · outlived their policies, namely, Fannie Bartek· of lodge 24, Lydia Martinek of lodge 20 and Hadie Vitek of ť.octge 20; he also recognized the Million Dollar Sales Representatives in District II,namely, Albin Machu, ladis Navratil and Kathy Fritz.

Brother Sidney Kacir gave his report and he mentioned the XXVI Convention coming up in 1992 in Victoriaand discussed the importance of membership in the SPJST. He also recognized. the 50 - year members present at the meeting who were Joe Hejl (lodge 29), Frank Klinkovský (lodge 47), Vlasta Hruska (lodge 47) and Ariton Mogonye (lodge 18).

District II fraternalists present and recognized by State FAC Frank Klinkovský included Martha Klusacek (lodge 47), Raymond Prasatik (lodge 155) and Irene Helgren (lodge 18).

Congratulations 'to all these people and thank you 'for being parť of our meeting.

This year all past District II officers were recognized during· our district meeting. We were pleased and honored 'to have. them present, also thank you 'for the many years · of service 'to District II. The SPJST has been privileged 'to have you serve as an · officer. Minutes Of District V Spring Meeting March 13, 1990 District VPresident Evelyn Mikeska convened the meeting at 1 :30 p.m. at lodge 142, Houston, Texas. All officers were present. District Flag Bearer Marlene Migl and Lodge 142 Flag Bearer Amanda Hermis presented the colors and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. "The Star Spangled :eanner" was rendered in English by Brother Fred Buri (a cappella) and "Kde Domuy Můj" was rendered by Sister Helen Hegwood (a cappella.)

Brother Dennis Hermis, president of Lodge 142,welcomedeveryone and welcoming response for the district was given by 1st Vice President Pearl Hánka. She thanked everyone for their attendance and for the delicious meal taken are of by Lodge 142 members; she also thanked those who donated desserts. She thanked Lodge 88 Choral Group, led by nm Kostom, for their singing before the meeting.

Brother Dennis Hermis, 2nd vice president of District V, introduced guests including Brother Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy, from the Supreme Lodgeand the presidents from various lodges were present.

There were Brother Jerry Dressler (Lodge 172), Brother Zdenek Nedbalek (Lodge 196), Brother Alvin A. Franta (Lodge 91), and Brother Lonnie Lostak (lodge 139). Mr. Karel Sicner, who has been invited by the new president of Czechoslovakia to speak on behalf of Czech TV, was also introduced.

Sister Evelyn Mikeska conducted the memorial services to honor those departed members during the year; her beautiful candlelight ceremony was assisted by several of the youth club members, and by Sister Pearl Hánka, who read the list.

Secretary Tennie Walla called the · roll of lodges. There were 7 lodges represented by their members.

Sister Evelyn Mikeska recognized all 50 - year members and those present were presented their pins.

Sister Evelyn Mikeska then presented corsages and boutonnieres 'to the Fraternalists · of the Year.

Brother Alvin Sefcik (Lodge 172) was honored as State Fraternalisť of the Year, anď other Fraternalists · of the Year from various lodges, who were present were Sister Tillie Helmcamp (lodge 88), Brother Sidon Tumis (Lodge 142) and Sister Evelyn Mikeska (lodge 196). Absent was Sister Benita Walzel (lodge 81). The corsages and boutonnieres were made and donated by Sister Vicki Dressler (Lodge 172).

Brother Leonard Mikeska gave a short talk bringing greetings from the other officers· of the Supreme lodge.

He commended the lodge 88 Choral Group as "a touch · of class" organization.

He, again, acknowledged Brother Alvin Sefcik as Fraternalist of the Year'for the State, as well as thé other Fraternalists of the Year who were present. He reported on some changes in requirements 'for home mortgage 'Ioans and reminded us of various activities in the SPJST. He called our attention to fraternalism and urged everyone 'to keep this in mind as they go about their daily lives.

The Dramatic Oub of Lodge 88 will present a Czech plaý on May 20, 1990 · at Lodge 88 in the Czech language. On June 17, 1990 an English play will be presented.

Brother Homer Alexander announced that the safety driving classes by AARP were being suspended and probably will continue in June.

Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held at SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena, Texas on Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4, 1990. The Texas Chapter of the P.O.L.K. (Polka Lovers Club of America) will co - host the celebration along with the Harris County Czech Heritage Society, San Jacinto Czech Club and Lodge No. 172.

Sister Rose Sicner requested that District V give permission for a fund raising project for children in the hospital in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Brother Karel Sicner gave a few more details on this. On motion made, seconded and carried, District V agreed to this project. Further details will appear in the Vestnik after final approval by Supreme Lodge.

The Auditing Committee reported that the books were found to be in order, however, several suggestions were made as to some changes in the accumulation of data by the treasurer and District V youth counselor to expedite future audits.

Officers and youth club officers were installed by Brother Leonard Mikeska.

The money raised by the youth club on the staple items that were donated by the attendees of the meeting was given to District V treasurer for the General Fund. Also, several cakes were auctioned. Lodge 142 youth also hau a fund - raising project and those prizes were awarded.

Our thanks to Lodge 88 orchestra who provided musical entertainment for dancing after the meeting.

Members were reminded of the District VI spring meeting to be held Sunday, March 25th in Moravia.

The officers' workshop held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on February 24th was attended by Hilmer Galetka and Erwin Holy. Hilmer gave a report on the workshop.

On March 11, 1990, we held a "42" Tournament. The winners · of this game will be going to the State Competition. The three teams going are Raymond Jurica and Jim Holahan, Willie Diven and Ronnie Honza, Joe Martinek and Raymond I.anger. Our alternate team consists of Ramy Jurica and Chris Diven. Good luck to these men.

On March 12, 1990, we were host lodge of the Fraternal Council meeting. Our meeting started at about 7:40 p.m. After all the business was completed, social games were played.

We would like to thank Brother Johnnie I. Krajca for taking care of the social games and thank Brother Victor Trojacek for helping him. After playing games, there were sandwiches, cakes, cookies, coffee and tea served to the guests. We were very glad to have had such a good turnout and thanks to all who came.

The Vrazel Polka Band played at Lodge No. 25 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31st.

The Ennis Polka Festival is just around the corner. This year's activities will be extra special because of the freedom received to those in Czechoslovakia. We hope you all can come and celebrate this with us.

Correspondence read included name changes, new insurance annuities report, a letter from Thelma Groppell (curator librarian of SPJST library, Archives and Museum) relative to genealogies of its members on computer in the library, a letter from Program Director Denise Reck, El Campo Area Workshop thanking our lodge for a contribution of $300 and for use of our hall, a letter from President Charles Merta of El Campo Association for Retarded Citízens requesting our lodge 'to again support the organization at the Youth Fair, and a letter from Project Chairman Sherry Roddy of El Campo Jaycee Meadow lane Water Therapy Project thanking us for our $200 contribution.

Brother Jim Wiest reported on the sales representatives' meetings which will be at linden Hall every third Wednesday of each month; the first one was March 21st at 7:00 p.m. and the second will be on April 18th.

Inez Community Hall Sets Polka Fest Three polka bands will be featured in. the Second Annual Polka Fesť on May 20, 1990 at the Inez Community Center, Inez, Texas.

Sponsored by SPJSTlodge No. 143, Inez and lodge No. 97, Placedo, the festival will feature the Vrazel Polka Band · of Buckholts, Leo Majek's Orchestra of Corpus Orris ti and Vanek Brothers of Victoria.

The music will be played from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.; admission will be $5 per personfor adults and $1 'for those 12 years and under.

Hamburger, cokes, kolache and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Trustees' Report: The new popcorn kettle arrived and new flag will be purchased, two bids were received on renovation and. this was tabled for more bids.

Two new members were welcomed into the lodge those being Jack George and Aliceann Wallace.

A discussion was held on donating 'to Educational Channel No. 46; Otis Beck made a motionto donate $500. A discussion and motion was made 'to donate. 'to little River Academy police · officer whose salary is paid . 'for by donations and he is doing a great job at least speeders have slowed down coming through our little 'town.

J.C. Johnson is still working· on domino night; we have had 3 playing nights and have all erijoyed it. The next domino night will be April 18th at 7 p.m, ať our 'lodge; members are urged to participate.

The Best Of Times At Lodge No. 183, Arlington Dear Members: I'm your new fraternal coordinator at Mid - Cities lodge No. 183, Arlington, Texas. Here's hoping that the new year has started out 'to be one of the best 'for all our members and friends. At lodge No. 183, this year has started out with a positive outlook.

There are many activities occurring at the 'lodge and they are splendid.

A regular dance schedule has been established, so mark your calendar.

We will have dances on the FIRST and 1HIRD Saturday of each month. The FIRST Saturday will be a country and western band and Memory Lane, an excellent country - western band with a good following, has agreed to play for the next several months. The THIRD Saturday of each month will usually find a very good polka band at our lodge. Thus far, we have had a lot of good times at these dances, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and all kinds · of other memorable occasions. The crowds are growing at our dances, so come by and meet your members and neighbors who are attending the monthly dances.

In.1989, the lodge started having a family night for fellow lodge associates and their friends and family. We started out having these socials on the last Friday · of each month. They have grown so popular with everyone, causing us to create a second family night for those who enjoy these gatherings. We are not socializing on the second Friday of each month in addition to our regular sociable. Everyone brings covered dishes, salads, desserts, etc., and we serve drinks from the bar. After eating and visiting, we begin 'to get serious.

Several intense games of "42" break out as well as cards, dominoes and other diversions. The rest · of the evening is · spent in friendly competition, visiting acquaintances, eating, frivolity, more games , eating, etc. (You can tell where that is going.)

Ori our regular family night, on the final Friday of the month, everyone, again, brings a· covered dish · or dessert, but the 'lodge supplies some of the sustenance 'for the evening.

Ať our last monthly meeting, we decided that we would ask: one of our members who play Taroky, 'to teach several of the· other members so that we could start playing this Czech card game. Maybe if we get competent at this game, we could possibly enter the Tarok Tournament next year. A few other ideas were suggested 'for the family nights.

Our 'lodge members who have not attended one of our family night get 'togethers have missed alot of fun. Be sure 'to attend the next family socíal.: Don't pass up a good time.

My in - laws, Bill and Mary Sill from lodge 84, in Dallas, have attended many· of our family nights and they always 'look 'forward 'to the nexť one.

Mary Sill contributes some of the most delicious casseroles, pies and cakes that you would ever wanť to imbibe. At this point, I would like to compliment everyone who has contributed, not only nourishment to our evenings, but their presence is appreciated. There isn't enough space to thank everyone, individually, but I do wish to thank you all collectively 'f01: the great 'food and good times. Remember that a. true friend is· one who sticks by you even

when he gets 'to know you real well.

The regular monthly meeting · of lodge No. 183 is the second Sunday of the month. Our last meeting held on March 11th was productive. Several issues were discussed and decisions were made that will affect your 'lodge in the future. If you have an idea or input, be sure to attend the next regularly scheduled meeting· on April 8th at 5:00 p.m. lodge No. 183 President Inez Greenlees will be glad 'to entertain new ideas brought up before the constituency. All present, contribute a dollar for the door prize and, after each meeting, a drawing is held. Ed Kral won the last pot, having his dollar drawn from the ante.

Our game nights are improving as the year progresses. It takes a concentrated effort by the workers at these nights, to make them successful.

It appears that everyone connected with the production of these events is putting forth the maximum. Two young ladies who contribute 'to our accomplishment are · our kitchen workers, Charlotte Partridge and partner, Leota. The fine job that they do every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday has helped to increase· our attendance.

They also work the kitchen on some of our dance nights.

They would like for everyone to know that hard work is the yeast that raises the dough.

I guess that about wraps it up 'for now. I will focus on other items and other individuals in coming letters.

A young lady, a plant and flower enthusiast, was driving on a secluded farm road when she noticed an unusual looking shrub · on the roadside. She pulled over and wenťto investigate. A farmer· on his way to town drove up and leaned· out the window of his pickup and asked if she was having trouble. "No thanks," she replied, "I was just looking for a big bush." A blush spread across the face of the farmer. "I beg your pardon," he said and quickly drove away.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our last meeting, at the last minute, was held at the National Hall. Joyce Tesar came tó our rescue and we really did appreciate it. She had the hall decorated in the St. Patrick's Day theme and made us feel at home.

Anna Johnson reported on get well cards sent. We were sorry 'to hear Jeanie Mason had emergency surgery . and glaďto report she is getting better each day.

After the meeting, we had Speaker Sundra Litchfield from Citizens Against Crime on Personal Assult. It gave us a lot to think about. The program was interesting. She was asked to stay for lunch and she erijoyed visiting with us.

Eva Dockery flew in from Arizona to help her mother celebrate her 80th birthday. Happy Birthday also wenťto Monte North, Carrie Milan, Jo Prochaska, Mary White '(our new member) and Oem Oujesky. May you all have many more. For Carrie and Joe Milan, their daughter Marilyn Milan presented them 'for their · birthday a trip 'to Europe. They will leave March 28th. May they arrive safely and I am sure they will have a lot to talk about on their return.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 160 San Angelo Youth Activities For our February meeting, we invited lodge No. 49 Rowena Youth Club 'to join us at Stadium lanes in San Angelo. SYDOaudette Reese and her family alsojoined us.

After a brief meeting with reports from DYC Sandra Jansa and SYD Oaudette Reese, we erijoyed an afternoon· of "wild" bowling. There were some dropped balls and a few tumbles but a 'lot of laughs. It seems most of us were out of practice.

Afterward, we enjoyed pizzas at Pizza Hut. Welookforwardto doing it again next year.

LYD~ mCICRIM MYSKA, age 71, of Jourdariton, Texas, died in San Aritoriio,Texas on February 27, 1990.

She made her home in Jourdanton where she had lived for the past 42 years.

Sister Myska was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge No. 147.

Sister Myska is survived by her husband, Rudy Myska of Jourdariton; one son, WilliamFrank Rickriniof San Antoriio;· one stepdaughter, Cecilia · Huble of Pleasariton; two stepsons, Buddy Myska· of Sycamore, Illinois and Bobby Myska of Poteet, Texas; one brother. Ariton Ventrcek · of

Brother Novosad was born on July 29, 1941 in Bryan where he spent his entire life.

Brother Novosad was a charter member of Lodge 189. He served as Precinct Justice · of the Peace 'for Brazos County. He had previously worked as a real estate broker, and he worked for both Beal Insurance Company and Circle N Insurance Company.

Brother Novosadwas a Catholic.

Survivors include four daughters, and three sons - in - law, Monica S. Novosad of Madisonville, Regina L Smith and husband Samuel, Rita J. Frailicks and husband Tim, Renee D. An Easter Holiday Tradition In many European countries Easter Monday is a holiday of merriment. In Czechoslovakia, boys plait willow wands and ornament them with bright ribbons. With these they switch the girls "so they won't be lazy" and every victim is· obliged to give a decorated egg to her tormeritor.

Groups of boys may go from house to house and are rewarded with colored eggs and Easter cakes; in Czech Easter cake is called "Mazanec."

Blaha·- Bartek Nuptials Read In Westphalia Ceremony Pamela Lynn Blaha and Mark Wayne Bartek were married Saturday, March 17, 1990 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Aleck lazek performed the ceremony in the Church· of the Visitation in Westphalia.

The bride is the daughter · of Raymond and Betty Blaha of Jarrell, and the granddaughter of Ariton and Amelia Pokornyof Taylor and the late Joe and Louise Blaha of Granger.

The bridegroom is the son · of Oarence and Nell Bartek· of lake Charles, Louisiana. He is the grandson ofMrs. G.L. Ranly and Mrs. Arnold Bartek of Westphalia.

Organist was Tanya Hoelscher and vocalist was Glenn Voltin.

Bernie Gebala of Temple, uncle of the bride, read the readings.

The bride was attended by her sister, Cheryl Blaha as maid of honor, and Suzanne Burwick Jacobs as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Bernadette Gebala Hunter, Michele Langford, Joan Moeller and Diana Zavala. They wore tea - length ruby taffeta dresses and carried star gazer lily white roses, baby's breath with greenery.

Flower girls, Kayla Ranly and AlishaDelanceyalso wore tea - length ruby taffeta dresses and carried flowers to match the bridesmaids.

Keith Lee served as best man.

Groomsmen were David Bartek, Ron Bartek, brothers of the groom, Dwight Arldt, Gary Ranly, and Ronnie Hoelscher.

Ushers were B.A. Ranly and Mark Langford. Ringbearer was Jared Ranly

and Richard Lee Delancey. Altar boys were Aaron and Seth Lorenz.

The bride entered the church with her father. She wore a gown of white tissue taffeta and Alencon lace. The , fitted lace bodice was trimmed with bridal beads and sequins and featured a sabrina neckline and leg of mutton sleeves. From the dropped basque waistline with a back bow, fell a full skirt trimmed with border lace and sweeping oval cathedral train.

Her bouquet was arranged with pink and white roses, stefonatis, baby's breath and ivy.

A reception was hosted at the Westphalia parish hall. The houseparty included Sally Lohr, Janet Ferguson, Jennifer King, Melissa King, Cheryl Hoelscher and Sherry Saathoff.

Music was by Jerry Haisler and The Melody Five.

The bride holds a B.B.A. degree in Business Administration from Southwestern University.

The bridegroom graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.A. degree in Ovil Engineering. He is employed as a quality assurance analyst with Ralph Wilson Plastics Company in Temple.

Following a wedding trip 'to Sante Fe, New Mexico,the couple will make their home at Westphalia.

Burácející potlesk patřil též -- víc snad než jinde -­ závěrečné papežově větě: "Drazí poutníci, vaše pouť nesmí skončit dnes. Musí pokračovat a dovést vás po stopách sv. Anežky až ke Kristu, v němž jediném najdete odpověď na všechny své problémy." Tento potlesk k závěru českéčásti papežova proslovu zaměřil pozornost stále rostoucího nadšení k nekonečné depresní šedi nesvobodných poměrů ve staré vlasti.

Tímto potleskem tedy poutníci z Československa vyslovovali jak svůj dík papeži Janu Pavlovi II tak své přání či záměr zbavit se doma jednou provždy chmůr útlaku a diskriminace.

Nakonec zase tisíce hlasů v každý z nás uvědomil jaká je to tady mikrofonu "Cominciamo! Pavla děvčata a ženy v lašských krojích ze následovala na příklad věta "Ano, za hradbami ukončilo pouť pro většinu .svatá Anežka je milá každému, jak poutníků ze starJe vlasti.

4. dubna 1990 Motto této velebné mše znělo takto: "Bože osvoboď nás pravdou a pomoz nám obnovit, na přímluvu svaté Anežky české, tvář naší země!"

Jak rozdílní byli však poutníci ze ~aré vlasti po třídenním pobytu v Rímě na Anežčině svatořečení! V sobotní ráno, 11. listopadu 1989, při příjezdu do Říma byli jak zakřiknuti ikdyž iaskaví, ohleduplní a zbožní -- v pondělí večer při odjezdu místo zakřiknutí byli plni elánu a odhodlání k činům jež změní k lepšímu osudy rodné vlasti. Tuto situaci a další pohnuté dny a týdny koncem minulého roku výstižně zachytil Václav Renč tímto veršem: Anežka, z rodu Přemyslova, sestřička chudých, sestra králů jde, křížem busí beze slova o mrtvou skálu: "Vy, sami v sebe zazdění, povstaňte v tomto znamení!"

Teď se vrátím k naší texaské skupině vypravené do Říma Klečkovým Klubem Kontinentál z městečka East Bernard, kolem 50 mil od Houstonu.

Běhempapežské audienceAlden Smith i já, oba krojovaní členi této skupiny, jsme seděli uprostřed velké krojované skupiny děvčat a žen ze Slezska a z jiných částí staré vlasti. Střed této skupiny hýřící pestrými barvami svých krojů byl vzdálen od jeviště jen kolem 20 metrů (přes 60 stop naší americké délkové míry), takže jsme krásně viděli papeže, kardinály i jiné církevní hod­ nostáře a lehce mohli též sledovat celý jevištní program. Ostatní členinaší tex­ aské skupiny byli roztroušeni daleko vzadu haly a tak po skončení audience byli mnohem dříve venku, někteří pravděpodobně až v našem blízském hotelu Michelangelo, než my s korouhví, s prapory a s cedulemi vyšli vůbec z haly. Tu se hned začli za všech stran sbíhat poutníci ze staré vlasti nás fotografovat anebo se fotografovat s námi. Zase se zkoušely různé pózy, ostošest se fotografovalo a filmovalo což marně se snažili zastavit 2 členi papežovy švýcarské gardy, kteří chtěli uzavřít cestu vedoucí k hale. Nakonec nás odtamtud "vysvobodil" švýcarský diplomat, ale fotografování zaělo ihn­ ed znovu, jakmile jsme se ocitli na svatopeterském náměstí. Tu totíž zase žádala nás řada lidí o pózy a my nechtěli jim odřeknout takovou maličkost, která jim doma pak připomene pouť do Říma a setkání s námi, zahraničními krajany.

Fotografování a filmování bylo tedy dlouhé; vzalo to zase asi 2 hodiny, ste­ jně jako předešlý den v neděli 12. listopadu před velechrámem sv. Petra po pontifikální mši se svatořečením naší Anežky Přemyslovny. V podvečer tohoto dne byla - jak jsem se v tomto mém článku zmínil -- slavná mše na rozloučenou s poutníky z Českosloven­ ska, sloužená slovenským kardinálem Tomkem a všemi našími biskupy přítomnými na římské pouti.

Rozloučení po mši s velkou řadou autobusů plných poutníků ze staré vlasti bylo velmi dojemné---.

4. dubna 1990-VĚSTNÍK/13 V úterý 14. listopadu opět za krásného slunečného dne jsme vyrazili po 8. hodině ranní našími autobusy do Assisi téměř 2 hodiny jízdy na sever od Říma. Assisi se nachází v provincii Umbria, takřka v polovině italského poloostrova ve svazích horského pásma Apenin, které se táhne jako rybí hřbet téměř celou Itálií. Tu žil sv. Fran­ tišek a sv. Klára, která byla rádkyní a přítelkyní naší Anežky Přemyslovny.

Na popud této světice Anežka založila v Praze řád Klarisek, do kterého pak sama vstoupila. Naše Anežka založila též fratiškánský klášter Minoritů (Menších bratří) a předtím již špitální bratrstvo Křížovníků s červenou hvěz­ dou. Jelikož Assisi je spjato se sv.

Anežkou českou tak bylo pro nás samozřejmé navštívit během naší římské pouti toto majestátní historické městečko.

v mé paměti a v mém srdci. Svatá Anežka českáje velmi aktuální právě v nynější době poněvadž ona královská dcera, česká princezna, věděla, že vlád­ nout znamená sloužit, že krásným posláním je myslit víc na druhé než na sebe, že nutným je pracovat pro všeobecnou lidskou důstojnost a usilovat o lidská práva a o spravedlnost.

Záplava československých praporů při manifestacích či demonstracích během vzrušujících historických událostí koncem listopadu hned po Anežčiněkanonizaci a pak v prosinci a lednu jasně ukazuje velký vliv naší světice a jejího poslání na velké radostné změny v naší staré vlasti. Československévlajky vlály anebo by­ ly mávány nad hlavami statisíců na Václavskémnáměstí a na Letné v Praze právě . tak jak byly mávány nad poutníky na svatopeterskémnáměstí, v bazilice sv. Petra a vevnitř i venku velikéaudienční haly v Římě. Těší mne a jsem na to hrdý, že jsem i já mával mým československým i texaským praporem jak v Římě tak v Assisi a na Monte Cassino.

Přestože počasí u nás nebylo zrovna nejlepší - bylo pochmurno a chladno s deštěm - ale na štěstí jim ani toto nevadilo a nepokazilo dobrou náladu.

Uspořádali jsme malou slavnost večírek a v družné zábavě a srdečném prostředí jsme se velmi dobře bavili.

Zazpívali jsme si všichni naše krásné lidové písně, k čemuž nás doprovodil hrou na harmoniku harmonikář a posléze nechyběl ani nějaký ten taneček. Atmosféra byla vynikající a budeme na tyto chvíle dlouho vzpomínat. Myslím; že i naší hosté se cítili v naší společnosti dobře. Čas se naplnil a nastala chvíle loučení, které je vždy těžké a byli jsme dojati až k slzám. Příští den, ve středu ráno 15. listopadu, jsme zase jeli našími autokary na jih do Monte Cassina jež se nachází zhruba v polovině cesty mezi Římem a Neapolí. Monte Cassino je rovněž spjato s dějinami staré vlasti jelikož odtud dovedl svatý Vojtěch (Adalbert), druhý pražský biskup, několik mnichů řádu sv. Benedikta do Prahy, kde v blízkém Břevnově vznikl pak první benediktínský klášter ve staré vlasti v roce 993. Ve stejný rok pak vznikl i ženský benediktínský klášter u sv. Jiří na pražském hradě jehož abatyší se stala Mlada, sestra tehdejšího knížete Boleslava II. Naše českoamerické benediktinské opatství a školy v Lisle hned u Chicaga je rovněž tedy spjato s Monte Cassinem jak sv. Vojtěchem, druhým pražským biskupem, tak břevnovským klášterem z roku 993. Za druhé světové války Monte Cassino bylo jistou dobu důležitým opěrným německým bodem tak zvané Gustav linie napříč Itálií porčež bylo takřka úplně zničeno hlavně leteckým bombardováním.

Nyní je vše znovu vybudováno v původním slohu.

Tyhle dva naše celodenní výlety -­ Assisi a Monte Cassino -- potřebují svůj vlastní článek, případně dva vlastní články.

Po návratu z Monte Cassina po kratším odpočinku, ve kterém já jsem si vyměnil můj kroj za oblek, jsme jeli našími autobusy na poslední večeří v Itálii do velké restaurace v osadě

Frasca ti za periferií Říma. Tam organizátoři cestovní kanceláře Evrop­ ské spojení· (European Connection) se úplně překonali zařízením skvělé večeře a výborné obsluhy. Myslím, že zmíněná cestovní kancelář chtěla tak odčinit hrozné dvě večeře v restaurantu hned u Vatikánu, sjednané tam hotelem Michelangelo. Během večeře jsme měli nevítanou atrakci. Na několik vteřin se totíž zachvěla země -­ bylo to slabé zemětřesení -- což jsme si uvědomili až návratem číšníků, kteří totiž bleskurychle zmizeli ven z restaurace. Do našeho hotelu jsme se vrátili ve 2 hodiny ráno kdy na poslední chvíli jsem se rozhodl koupit

si jednu z velkých skupinových fotografií i když cena byla "nekřesťan­ ská" -- buď 15,000lir anebo $12.00!! šest hodin později, v 8 hodin ráno jsme se rozloučili s hotelem Michelangeloa jeli naposledy našími autokary na letiště Leonardo de Vinci, zvané též umicino, odkud jsme odlétli v 1. 15 od­ poledne. se zpožděním jedné a půl hodiny. Po příletu do NewYorku, kdy naše zpoždění bylo prakticky odepsáno, jsme měli zpoždění znovu k vůli opravě radaru letadla New York Houston. Místo tři čtvrtě na devět dorazili jsme do Houstonu před jedenáctou hodinou večer 16. listopadu 1989.

Náš týden v Říme -- na pouti k prohlášení blahoslavené Anežky české svatou -- byl tak překrásně památný, že každá jeho podrobnost zůstane navždy

Musím se s Vámi podělit o nevšední radostnou událost, kterou jsme tyto dny v naší rodině prožívali.

Už několik let v každém ročním ob­ dobí přijíždí k nám na několik dní můj bratranec pan Jerry Elzner z Corpus Christi - Texasu. Přijíždí i se svojí manželkou Milldem a dalšími příbuznými - ba někdy i se svými přáteli - pocházejícírovněž po rodičích nebo prarodičích z Československa, kteří všichnijsou našimi hosty. Všichni se rádi podívají do své staré vlasti, odkud pocházejí jejich předkové. V době velké hospodářské krise před mnoha léty i nezaměstnanosti v naší zemi - se jejich rodiče vystěhovali do Ameriky, kde nalezli jednak práci a jednak svůj domov. Na svůj starý domov a svou vlast však v ciziněnikdy nezapomněli a tuto lásku k rodné zemi vštípili i svým dětem. Proto dnes po mnoha létech touží se jejich potomci podívati do staré vlasti svých rodičů i prarodičů. Je pro nás obdivuhodné, jak tito naši příbuzní v daleké Americe udržují a zachovávají si zvykya obyče­ je svých předků a jak je to přitahuje podívat se do své staré vlasti. Je to velká síla a láska k jejich rodu a zemi, na kterou nikdy nezapomínají.
