S&MB Foundation Contribution Helps Preserve Czech Language In Texas Patrick and his wife, Rose Patek, who are President and Trustee, and Secretary and Trustee, respectively, of the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, Inc. contributed $100,000 and have agreed to make an additional substantial contribution to the Czech Educational Foundation · of Texas which funds will be used to establish

the Czech Chair. The Chair will be established at either Texas A&M University or the University of Texas at Austin.

The Pateks are Texans, and Patrick J. Patek and his father, Charles Patek, are KJT members. Patrick is an SPJST member.

On the front page of this issue is a

picture of Brother Pat Patek (Lodge 88), his wife, Rose, daughter, parents and members of our SPJST Supreme Lodge submitted to us by Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir including a writeup. He also submitted a letter of information to our office and we are printing a part of it for your information. Please read it carefully -- it states in part: "Brother Pokladnik and I visited with l.adie Matula, President.. of KJT. President Matula gave us a status report on their drive for funds for the Czech Chair. The local lodges and members are responding enthusiastically to the Czech Chair drive and the K JT Board will consider the matter of the Czech Chair at their upcoming board meeting.

Hopefully, more of the fraternals farm mutuals - individuals will contribute more. If we can get a total of $667,000 raised by the end of May of this year, with a 50 percent match of $333,500 from the chosen university, we will have the chair funded for $1,000,500 which should produce over $80,000 per year for the good of Czech language culture and heritage.

We look forward to working with you at the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas meeting Saturday, March 17 at the SPJST Hall in Caldwell. If Mr. Patek is near the area, we hope that he and his family can attend -- they know they are always welcome and their ideas and suggestions are always welcome."

*** All men, no matter how big, make mistakes. But history teaches us that big men refuse to falter because of their mistakes. Henry Ford ·forgot to put a reverse gear in his first automobile. Edison once spent over two million dollars on an invention which proved of little value. The man who makes no mistakes lacks boldness and the spirit of adventure. He is the one who never tries anything new; he is the brake on the wheel of progress.

Remember, a mistake becomes an error only when nothing is done to correct it!

Speaking of looking forward, someone once mentioned, never look back because you don't knowwho will be gaining on you. Certainly we must look forward; we must continually advance with new concepts and ideas and our eyes always fixed on new horizons. However, without the past there would be no future. Therefore, occasionally, we must look back to check our progress, to compare our present position with that of our former and re - evaluate our direction.

As we look back to measure our today against yesterday, we can see the firm foundation upon which the SPJST Societyis based.

As far as salesmanshipis concerned, we truly believe, "Fear attracts that which is feared.'' If you fear talking to a prospect, your attitude reflects that fear. If you enter a prospect's home or office with an attitude that is almost apologetic, he senses your uneasiness and usually gives you rapid relief by terminating the interview rather quickly. Approach your prospect with poise and self - assurance. If you are at ease, the prospect is much more apt to be at ease.

In most cases a prospect is seldom interested in a product or service unless he has a need for it. Therefore, to spend time telling how good your product or service is, is more or less a waste of time. Save time, Determine the needs, and build your presentation around the need for your service --and be diplomatic in doing so. Devote your presentation to that which will apply directly to the prospect and prove to be of the greatest benefit to him. A presentation can be, and should be, made so effectivelythat the prospect will almost feel that your service was designed especially for him.

Procrastination is one of the greatest resistances encounted by the sales person. However, an alert sales person knows that the thought · of "putting it off" might be lurking in the prospect 's mind. And he knows that it will be up to him or her to convince the prospect that he cannot affordto be without his or her service.

A sales person will make it obvious that now is the right time to buy.

To knock a competitor is a serious mistake and seldom helps you at all.

Usually, an "on - his - toes" sales person backs his or her presentation with sufficient proof to cause the prospect to feel that his or her product or service is the very best, and the leader in its field. Paying compliments to your competitor's product or service usually raises your own in the esti1!1ation of the prospect. They realize. you are sure of yourself, otherwiseyou would not -- could not -­ be so generous with praise for those in the same business.

Generally speaking, a conscientious sales person takes his or her profession just as seriously as the doctor or lawyer takes his · or her profession. Bearing this type of sales person in mind, let us always consider some of the components whichhelp to make up a top - notch sales person. It takes a great deal to succeed in this great, but competitive world of selling.

To me, a sales person is one of the most fascinating and rewarding occupations on earth -- IF it is approached as a profession instead of "ajob,

There are many arguments in favor of almost any product or service, but usually there is ať least one outstanding or dominant appeal. A good sales person will build on the dominant and make all others subordinate to it. In transportation, for example, speed is the dominant appeal · for the airlines. Comfort is played up by the railroads and economyby the bus companies. When selecting a dominant appeal, take the feature which is special and cannot be duplicated by a competitor. Playing up the dominant features will alsomake it difficult for competition to undermine you.

Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities (Arlington) Workshop Sales representatives from Lodge No. 183 Mid - Cities recently met 'to find ways to increase membership in the lodge. SPR Jim Wiest conducted the program, whichfocused on how to prospect for new members and where to find them.

This was the first· of a series· of regular monthly sessions at the local lodge level. In the near future, all sales representatives will be invited to attend these · 1ocal sessions which are conducted in an iriformal and relaxed atmosphere.

Attendance is on a voluntary basis, but the information gained through the additional exposure and the shared experiences· of fellow agents will be good for not only themselves, but also for thelocallodge, the Society and the member.

State Tarok Tournament Continues From Page One

OUR THANKS TO JUDGES at State Tarok Tournament, Lto R: Dan Hejl [I.ooge 47], Franklin Schlesinger [I.ooge 29], Albert Kubala [I.ooge 92] and Johnnie Gaidusek [I.ooge 66].

Fifth Annual SPJST State Tarok Tournament Lodge No. 29, Taylor was the site for the Fifth Annual State Tarok Tournament. There were 72 enthusiastic players from 18 lodges representing all parts of the state.

State FAC Frank Klinkovsky welcomed the players and wished them "Good Inek."

After two preliminary rounds, a delicious meal was served by Lodge No. 29, Taylor. After the noon meal, three more rounds were played by everyone and the top four players advanced to Round No. 6. The top 16 players were recognized. The top 16 players were: Dan Hejl, Glen Paul, Llnda Moreland, Jerry Kubala, Rudy Kaspar, Claudette Reese, Lewis Jez, J.J. Kubala, Johnnie Gaidusek, Jerry Brezina, EvelynScaff, Johnnie Kohut, Louis Kubala, Tim Reese, Fred Havlak and Henry Kubala.

The four prize winners were determined by score and these winners were: First Place -- Henry Kubala of Lodge No. 92 Second Place -- Jerry Brezina, Lodge No. 92 Third Place -- Glen Paul, Lodge No.

It seems that Lodge No. 92 came well - prepared or it really was their lucky day because they went home with three of the four prizes; all the others say it willbe our turn next time.

My sincere thanks to all who have taken the time to play and support these tournaments. The fun and fraternalism that was experienced reminds us of the stories that were told by our forefathers. A sincere thank you · to Lodge No. 29 and their members for an outstanding job in hosting the tournament; to Supreme Lodge President Howard I.eshikar and Directors Andy Vavra and Willie E. Kohutek for coming to visit with the players and for their support; also to all the tournament judges, Albert Kubala, Franklin Schlesinger, Dan Hejl, Johnnie Gaidusek and everyone elsewho assistedin the tournament.

New Braunfels To Host District VII Meeting The District VII spring meeting will be hosted by Lodge No. 185, Hill Country in New Braunfels at the Bavarian Village on Sunday, March 25, 1990.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with food being available for lunch at the Bavarian Village.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Sunday, March 4, 1990, at 1 p.m., was the opening of our last monthly lodge meeting by President Johnnie Krizan.

He called upon Tammi Dobecka to recite the pledge to the flag and SPJST Motto with all members standing, followed by reading of the minutes from our last meeting by Karen Kroll for Barbara Hykel.

Karen Kroll also read a letter from Supreme Lodge, and a note from the Robert Dobecka family.

The treasurer's report was given by Karen Kroll and Financial Secretary George Straten also gave his report.

Get well card was sent to Eugene Hrabal by Willie Mae Schuetz who, then, gave the club's monthly youth activities. She also reported that she is calling on youngsters to come to Friday night practices for their Easter program, which will be held at our next meeting on April 1st. On this day we will be having our Easter celebration beginning at 1 p.m., following will be a short youth program, an Easter egg hunt for all youngsters present so bring your baskets. After their egg hunt, turkey and dressing with all the trimmings (that go good with turkey meat) will be served. Lodge sisters are asked to bring sweets of their choice and the rest will be furnished by our lodge.

Vice President Joseph Krizan read a letter from Supreme Lodge reminding everyone of the District III spring meeting, which will be held April 29 at Lodge No. 180 in Burleson, Texas. We hope that several of our members will

attend. He also passed out the volunteer worksheets to all present.

Board Chairman George Straten gave his report of our last trustees' meeting which was held March 3 at 7:30p.m.

A discussion was about the Easter Party and to make a donation to West Fraternal Auditorium for their 13th anniversary on March 18th. It was also voted to raise the lodge door prize for our next meeting.

It was a delicious meal served at our last meeting by Ray and Mary Marek.· The surprising good dinner was enchilada casserole, picanta sauce, hot tortillas, Mexican· beans, sauerkraut, corn, pork wieners, potato salad, coffee and tea. Sweets, consisting of chocolate angel cake, kolache, strudle, cookies, lemon pudding, etc., were brought by members.

We sure wish more of you could or would come to enjoy those good feasts, even if you don't come often, it is all right. There are always some new faces who come; sometimes our regulars don't get to come and we miss them just like we miss you. Since the weather is getting better, our attendance is getting better, too. We also wish more of you could come to our social on Friday nights. We would like to have more Tarok players; so those of you who know how to play Taroky, please try to come next Friday at 7:30p.m.

Then, it was time for door prizes; lucky winner was Karen Kroll. The $10 progressive prizes' first name drawn was Jeffery Vochoska; second -­ Harrell Dean Snider; $3 prize was for Debra Hromadka.

Members who donated gifts for more door prizes were: Ray and Mary Marek -- winner was Hattie Kaska; Youth Oub -- Christine Svrcek; George and Josie Mae Straten -­ Willie Mae Schuetz; Willie Mae Schuetz -- Ruth Krizan.

This ended our meeting with socializing the rest of the day and youngsters were trying to fly their kites; they weren't too successful because the wind was too strong and kept breaking the strings on their kites.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: Our March meeting was called to order by President LaVerne Cabla. All officers and board of trustees were present.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and also stood for a moment of silent prayer for deceased member, Joseph Stepan.

Members on the sick list are Joe Schneider and John Kelarek, Katherine Head of Angleton (great granddaughter of J.T. and Lydia Surovik of Rockdale), will be having surgery in Dallas. Get well wishes are sent to all.

Birthday celebrants in March are Lorine Haisler (March 20), Robert Macek (March 3) and Doris Coots (March 26). Anniversary celebrants are Berniseand Joe Sebek (March 15), Lynn and Arleen. Tschoerner (March 22), Cayton and Sherry Cabla (March 22).

Happy Birthday and congratulations to each of you!

Congratulations are extended to Craig Schneider who placed second on his hog at the San Angelo Livestock Show.

The various committee chairmen gave their reports for the month of February.

The members voted to give $150 toward the Crippled Children's Hospital in Houston.

Louise Zavodny gave the board report. There were several items discussed. Louise mentioned that the trash burner was fixed and that the batteries had been charged in the emergencylights. The board proposed that the hall pay the entire cost of security at the dances, the Rules' and Regulations' Article VI (6) states that: The band pays one - half cost of security.

The members made a motion and it was seconded to have this Rules' and Regulations' Article VI (6) changed to read: The lodge willpay the entire cost of security at dances when needed.

A vote on this change will be at our April meeting.

Then, members made a motion and it was seconded to have Lawrence Psencik buy material and patch the roof whenever needed. The motion passed.

New members voted on at the meeting were Mark Macek, Jared Psencikand Hollie Winnett. We hope to see you at our lodge soon.

The youth report was given by Youth Leader Rose Howell.

I want to thank all the officers, members, visitors and guests from around the state who attended the state's local · officers' workshop at Lodge No. 24 making it a success.

It was really nice to have so many new faces at our 'lodge. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and thanks, again, ·for helping make it a success.

Our local lodge straight domino tournament was held and the results are as follows: 1st place -- Ryan Sebek and Donald Malovets 2nd place -- Johnnie Svoboda and Michael Carpenter 3rd place -- Johnny Chervenka and BillySmetanka Congratulations to all of you guys and best ofluck to our first place team at state competition.

Thelodge had trophies made 'for the winning teams. Mr. Edward Hejl' of Hejl's Trophies donated the engraving services done· on the ťrophies. We want to thank him for his wonderful work.

On April 16, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Bell County Agent Don Davis will be conducting a workshop training class on farm pesticides at the hall. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and anyone interested is invited 'to attend this informative meeting.

Lodge 25 Ennis Youth Meeting Dear Readers, The March meeting of Lodge No. 25 Youth dub was held on March 7, 1990. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Gail Macalik.

Brian Holland led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The register was read. ··There were eleven members, three adults and one guest, who was Randy Trojacek, present.

Secretary Sheila Trojacek read the minutes of the last meeting. There were no corrections or additions. They were approved as read.

The treasury's report was given. In the savings, we have $310.71 and in the checkingaccountwe have $150.30.

The business discussed was an Easter egg hunt, which will be on April 8th at 4:00 p.m. Each one who wishes'to participate willneeďto bring

The president adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m. A door prize was given and won by Sandra Trojacek.

Lodge No. 81, Needville The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81 was helď on Sunday, March 11, 1990. Thirty - three adults and children erijoyed a delicious dinner at 12:00 noon. Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall prepared the baked ham and Sister Mary Werner brought the sausage. As usual, the lodge sisters prepared a variety· of tasty vegetables, salads and desserts. Our thanks to all who brought the good food.

At 1:00 p.m. President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. Delores Macha led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. All officerswere present for mil call. Our guest was Caroline Brandiri of Surte, Sweden.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the February meeting, which were accepted with a minor correction. She also read a note of thanks from the family of Herbert Nowotny.

The reports of Financial Secretary Werner and Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall were read by them and both were accepted.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel presented his report of lodge activities, income and expenses for the month of February. His report was also accepted.

President Macha read a letter to members from the Supreme Lodge, advising that the family history and genealogy of our lodge members can now be stored in a computer at the Headquarters' office in Temple, Texas. Forms will be available for members to complete.

Members Charlie Pesak and Mary Werner are on the mad to recovery -­ he from pneumonia and Mary from shoulder and knee injuries. She is presently undergoing therapy.

Plans were made · to honor the fourteen members of Lodge 81 who will be receiving their fifty - year membership pins in April. These members are Reinhard Grunwald, Martha Holub, Clyde Kennelly, Tom A. Kocurek, Donald Eugene Lenert, Leona Mahler, Antonie Orsak, Ed Orsak, Elfrieda Schweinle, Robert Ernest Spacek, Stanley John Spacek, Henry Uherek, Eleanora Ward and Edna Woytek.

Pins will be presented to these members at the next regular meeting on Sunday, April 8, 1990. The meeting will begin at 12:00noon with a catered chicken- fried steak dinner and all the trimmings. Sisters of our lodge are asked to bring a pie, cake or other dessert.

Brother Walzel reported on the installation of T - posts marking one side of the lodge's property. Our thanks to the members who did the work, and nursed sore muscles for several days.

Under unfinished business, a committee consisting of Delores Macha and Benita Walzel was selected to formulate the rules and qualifications pertaining to the awarding of an SPJST scholarship to graduates of Needville High School.

Members voted to present four Lodge 81 college scholarships in the amount of $250 each to graduating seniors of Needville High School.

Door prizes were won by Alvin Blinka, Amanda Newman, Cheryl Newman and Gilbert Walzel.

Inez Community Hall Sets Polka Fest Three polka bands will be featured in the Second Annual Polka Fest on May 20, 1990 at tl.!e Inez Community Center, Inez, Texas.

Sponsored by SPJSTLodge No. 143, Inez and Lodge No. 97, Placedo, the festival will feature the Vrazel Polka Band of Buckholts, Leo Majek's Orchestra of Corpus Christi and Vanek Brothers of Victoria.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Milan, reported 11 youth members attended Theater Arlington to see "The Emperors Invisible Clothes" and that they all really erijoyed it; she . got many hugs from the youth. They also received autographs from the actors. On Sunday, April 8 she is taking them to the Scott Theater to see Brother B.J. Cíeveland in "Free to be a Family" which he will be doing in Italy.

Our annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth Easter Picnic will be held Easter Sunday at Tirk's farm (as in the past) -- weather permitting. More details, later.

Brother Jerry Milan received an invitation to the reception for Czechoslovak President Vaclav Havel in Washington. D.C. He said it was great; and he also was seated on the House of Representatives floor during President Havel's speech to the Joint Session of Congress, and said it was fantastic, and said he was proud to be an American - Czech. He also got to meet Shirley Temple Black.

He, along with Sister Henrietta and son, Brother Tai Milan, got in late the night before after being in Naples, Florida attending Sister Henrietta's art showing at the Park Shows Gallery and found the invitation when he got in and got busy and got a 6 a.m. flight the next morning.

Over the weekend of March 4th they were in Scottsdale, Arizona at Sister Henrietta's art showing at the Newman Gallery. They got in some skiing. He just returned this morning from attending a meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a very busy person. They sure hated 'to miss our Czech dinner and dance with Moostash Joe which was erijoyed by all. Sister Mary Renfro did it · again.

Joe said it was the best food he ever put in his 'mouth and that he has eaten everywhere. We extend a special thank you to all who put in 'long hours after having a big wedding Saturday night and getting ready for Sunday.

Our volunteer workers are the greatest.

We extend our get well wishes 'to Sisters Mary Katherine (Hale) Garrison of Creve Couer, Illinois and Jeanie Mason who had emergency surgery late Tuesday night. We are happyto report, she is doing well. Get well, soon!

Congratulations to Sister Maria Prill who celebrated her 80th birthday March 7th. Her daughter, Sister Eva Dockery, flew in from Arizona to help her celebrate. We hope you have many more.

Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: It is the middle of March and we are still having warm weather, the trees are getting green, so let's hope that another freeze is not forthcoming this year. With all of the rain, soon everyone will be having to mow lawns again. The wild flowers will be

blooming and the landscape along our highways will be beautiful again.

And, with warmer weather, more people will be going fishing again.

Camping and traveling in the spring is always a pleasant experience, a new beginning of a new year and a chance to do some of the things that you didn't do last year.

On Saturday, February 24th, ten members of Lodge No. 183, namely, Inez Greenlees, John and Irene Pustejovsky, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Robert, Pat and Shelby Sill, Norman and Gracie Kneschk attended the workshop at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone. It was a very iriformative meeting and a very good noon meal, also a very good way to swap ideas with other lodges. There were some interesting questions asked, and there are no good answers about how to get new and younger members interested in lodge work. There needs to be something interesting for members and to do this you need their ideas, but it is hard to get their ideas sometimes.

These ideas need to be communicated to all the members and communication between members is one thing that is hard to do sometimes. I occasionally hear someone say that they did not know something was going on at the lodge by members who did not attend the meeting. Meetings are where all things are discussed and voted on and recorded in the minutes, so you need to find a way to let all of the members know what is happening at the lodge by some means.

The Vestnik is a good way to let members know what is going on, and it is FREE to all members, therefore, you need someone from the lodge to write all of your activities in the Vestnik. But I did a survey of Lodge No. 183 and found out about 225 certificates which represent about ·100 households or families and only 46 were receiving the Vestnik, then the law of average says that about half of the people who receive this weekly newspaper read them and about half of the ones who read them attend the meetings, so this tells you about how many members attend meetings and are active in Lodge No. 183; of these members, ten attended the workshop.

Perhaps we neeďto encourage more members to take the Vestnik and read it iri order to get your ideas across 'to the members. I understand that some lodges are writing newsletters 'to all of their members in· order to tell all members about the activities going on at theirlodges.

The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 183 was on Sunday, March 11th and we were told that Eugene Roznos' mother had passed away. The members wish 'to express their sympathy to the family. We were also told that Johnny Adamek had been in the hospital; hope he is better and back on the job.

A letter from Supreme Lodge was read regarding all members' family history. The Supreme Lodge would like for all members to compile a historý of their families as far back as possible and have it recorded in the genealogical library in Temple so future generations can go to the computer in Temple to check on family members or add to it later on.

I have been working on my family hístoryfor some time and hope to have it in order soon.

There was one new member, Howard Johnson, voted on and approved this month.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Plan April Activities Dear Members and Friends: The youth club's meeting was held March 4, 1990 after our Lodge 6 meeting with a fair attendance.

Cakes were brought to West Rest Haven's Birthday Party by the youth on March 7th.

They also donated cakes and items to Leroy Bank Fund - Raiser.

On March 11 there were eleven youth members and nine· adults who went bowling to TSTI Campus and they all reported a good.time.

On April 1 the club will have their meeting, Easter program, egg hunt, and drawings for Easter items as their charity project.

After our last meeting, the youth dubbers had their kite - flying contest and tried flying their kites, but, it was too windy.

We are working on Easter rabbits made from half gallon milk and one gallon milk cartons, also Easter baskets for the rest home.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 133 in San Antonio, Texas, wish 'to express our sincere sympathy and comfort, on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of our departed member HENRIETIAKAIMUS, age 77, who died March 4, 1990.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred Kalmus; son, Stanley A. Kalmus; sisters, Regina Kutac, Grace Kasper and lillian Kalich, all from Schulenburg and her brother, Charles Krenek from Flatonia.

The rosary was recited for Sister Kalmus on Wednesday, March 7 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. A funeral mass was held the next day at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park.

Henrietta Kalmus was a member of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio since February, 1973. She was active in the Society and enjoyed the lodge meetings when she attended. She will be missed, but, always remembered by those of us who were lucky enough to know her.

May she rest in peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone on behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of EDWIN ROBERT SCIDIIER, 83, of the Cyclone community, who died Monday in a Temple hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sheffield Funeral Home of Temple with Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

He was born in Z.abcikville to the late Ben and Anna Bartek Schiller. He married Mary Christene Borton in 1954. They lived in Dallas prior to his retirement and had lived in Temple for the past 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Schiller of Cyclone; a daughter, Valliea Mae Goeke of Bedford; a sister, Lydia Stepan of Temple and two grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in peace and his memory live among us forever.

Schimcek Wedding Dana Denise Hurt and Raymond Charles Schimcekwere married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Corpus Christi, Texas on Saturday, January 27, 1990at 3:00 p.m. Reverend Frank Martinez officiated at the ceremony which was very special for him because it was the first wedding as a priest.

Raymond is the son of Alvin and Frances Schimcek· of San Antonio.

Dana is the daughter of Bill and Janie Hurt of Corpus Christi.

The bridesmaids included Sabine Farek, matron of honor; Cindy Mantineo, both of Corpus Christi and Janice Wills of Portland.

Vaclav Havel delivered to a joint meeting of Congress an extraordinary speech about democratic ideals, the rebirth of the · human spirit and America's role in the post -- cold war era. " Twice in this century the world has been threatened by a catastrophe.

Twice this catastrophe was born in Europe, and twice you Americans, along with others, were called upon to save Europe, the whole world and yourselves.

In the meantime, the U.S. became the most powerfulnation on earth, and it understood the responsibility that flowed from this. But something else was happening as well. The Soviet Union appeared, grew and transformed the enormous sacrifices of its people suffering under totalitarian rule into a strength that, after World War U, made it the second most powerful nation in the world.

Creating The Family Of Men

Allof this taught us to see the world in bipolar terms as two enormous forces -- one a defender of freedom, the other a source of nightmares.

Europe became the point of friction between these two powers, and thus it turned into a single enormous arsenal divided into two parts. In this process, one half of the arsenal became part of that nightmarish power, while the other, the free part, bordering on the ocean and having no wish to be driven into it, was compelled, together with you, to build a complicated security system to which we probably owe the fact that we still exist.

The totalitarian system in the Soviet Union and in most of its satellites is breaking down, and our nations are looking for a way of democracy and independence.

This, I am convinced,is a historically irreversible process and, as a result, Europe will begin again to seek its own identity without being compelled to be a divided armory any longer. Perhaps this will create the hope that sooner or later, your boys will no longer have to stand on guard for freedom in Europe or come to dur rescue, because Europe will at last be able to stand guard over itself.

But that is still not the most important thing. The main thing is, it seems to me, that these revolutionary changes will enable us to escape from the rather antiquated straitjacket of this bipolar view

Occasionally, she visits her home in Houston.

Mrs. Frances Dvorakcelebrated her 90th birthday on February 23, 1990at the home of her daughter and son"- in law, Elsie and George Kadera, in McKinney, Texas. She received many lovely flowers, cards, and telephone calls from her family and many friends.

Mrs. Dvorak's husband of 68 years, Frank, passed away in September, 1989.

Mrs. Dvorak is a longtime member of SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 88 in Houston, having joined in 1918, when she was 18.

Howcan the U.S. help us today? My reply is as paradoxical as the whole of my life has been. Youcan help us most of all if you help the Soviet Union on its irreversible but immensely complicated road to democracy. It is far more complicated than the road open to its former European satellites.

You yourselves know best how to support as rapidly as possible the non - violent evolution of this enormous multinational body politic toward democracy and autonomy for all its people. Therefore, it is not fitting for me to offer you any advice.

I can only say that the sooner, the more quickly and the more peacefully the SovietUnionbegins to move along the road toward genuine political pluralism, respect for the rights of the nations to their own integrity and to a working -- that is, a market --

And the sooner you yourselves will be able to reduce the burden of the military budget borne by the American people. To put it metaphorically, the millions you give to the East today will soon return to you in the form of billions in savings.

American soldiers shouldn't have to be separated from their mothers just because Europe is incapable of being a guarantor of world peace, which it ought to be in order to make some amends, as least, for having given the world two world wars.

The LegacyOf Oppression As long as people are people, democracy, in the full sense of the word, will always be no more than an ideal. In this sense, youtoo are merely approaching democracy. But you have one great advantage: you have been approaching democracy uninterruptedly for more than 200 years, and your journey toward the horizon has never been disrupted by a totalitarian system.

The communist type of totalitarian system has left both our nations, Czechsand Slovaks,as it has all the na­ tions of the SovietUnion and the other countries of the Soviet Union sub­ jugated in its time, a legacy of countless dead, an infinite spectrum of human suffering, profound economic decline and, above all, enormous human humiliation. It has brought us horros that fortunately you have not known.

It has given us something positive, a special capacity to look from time to time somewhat further than someone who has not undergone this bitter experience. A person who cannot move and lead a somewhat normal life because he is pinned under a boulder has more time to think about his hopes than someone who is not trapped that way.

What I'm trying to say is this: we must all learn many things from you, from how to educate our offspring, how to elect our representatives,all the way to how to organize our economic life so that it will lead to prosperity and not to poverty. But it doesn't have to be merely assistance from the well educated, powerful and wealthy to someone who has nothing and therefore has nothing to offer in return.

We, too, can offersomething to you: our experience and the knowledgethat has come from it. The specific experience I'm talking about has given me one certainty: consciousness precedes being, and not the other way around, as the Marxists claim. For this reason, the salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart, in the human power to reflect, in human meekness and in human responsibility.

A NewWay Of Thinking Without a global revolution in the sphere of human consciousness, nothing will change for the better in the sphere of our being as humans, and the catastrophe toward which this world is headed -- be it ecological, social, demographic or a general breakdown of civilization·-- will be unavoidable. If we are no longer threatened by world war or by the danger that the absurd mountains of accumulated nuclear weapons might blow up the world, this does not mean that we have definitely won. We are still incapable of understanding that the only genuine backbone of all our actions, if they are to be moral, is , responsibility. Responsibility tc

I think that you Americans should understand this way of thinking.

SPJST Members Attend Reorganization Of The Sokol Organization In Prague, Czechoslovakia, January 7, 1990

Brother larry Laznovsky, fraternal activities coordinator of Lodge No. 135, Ennis and SPJST District ill Finance Committee representative, and Brother Jerry Milan, president of lodge No. 154, Fort Worth and District ill representative of the SPJST By - laws Committee, have returned from attending the reorganizating of the Sokol Organization in Czechoslovakiaon January 7, 1990.

Brother larry is also president of Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky in Ennis and president of the Southern District· of the American Sokol Organization. Brother Milan, a member of Sokol Fort Worth, is the Southern District Public Relations chairman of the American Sokol By laws Committee.

The Sokol · organization was reorganized on Sunday, January 7th, after being disbanded by the previous government in 1948. The quickness in whichthé organization was refounded, after onlya few weeks of the country's new freedom, is testimony to the strength of the Sokolidea and the fact that the desire for freedom remained in so many of the countrymen's hearts even thought it was surpressed for 41 years.

Two days of activities celebrated this momentous occasion; together with a group of Sokols from the new organization and Sokols representing the countries of Canada, Austria, Switzerland and France. Brothers laznovsky and Milan laid memorial wreaths in lany, the burial sites of T.G. Masaryk, and son, Jan, and in Olsany Cemetery in Prague at the graves of Miroslav Tyrs and Jindrich Fuegner, the founder and first president of the Sokol Organization at the time of its founding in 1862.

On Sunday, January 7th, a convention was held, and. the Czech

Sokol elected officers, an Executive Board, and formulated by - laws by which its organization would abide.

The president elected was Mr. Petrok.

Vera Caslavska, former· olympic gymnast, was elected as a member of the Executive Board.

During their short stay in Czechoslovakia, Brothers Iaznovsky and Milan were able to observe and experience with the people a joy· for their new freedom. With the election of Vaclav Havel as the new Czech President only a week before the reorganization of Sokol, tremendous excitement among the Czechs was evident. Havel posters were in the businesses, in the homes and everywhere. Posters of feelings for the former government were also being freely exhibited. Czech flags and replaced Russian flags were displayed in number. Grafiti derogatory to the former leadership was freely exhibited. Businesses had not yet seemed to have an · opportunity to evidence much change.

Brothers Laznovsky and Milan had an opportunity to stay in the homes of relatives during the stay. Brother Milan has been to Czechoslovakia numerous times while this was Brother Laznovsky's first trip. They visited Brother Laznovsky's relatives in Praha and in Hnidousy, near Kladno, where his father, Brother FrankA. Iaznovsky, was born in 1908.

They visited the home where his father was born and the home where the familywas living at the time they came to America in 1911. They, then, visited Brother Milan's cousins and family in Uherske Hradiste. Brother Milan's mother was born in Kunovice.

Social .Securíty It is very important to have a Social Security number. Its use is required for different purposes, and it is not an exaggeration to say that without a Social Security number, you wouldn't be able to comply with the legal requirements you have to live with.

Under the Social Security program, the number is the key that opens the doors to financial aid when people retire or become disabled. It makes possible the payments of monthly benefits to certain family members or survivors of insured workers. Social Securityis a package of protection that covers everybody who meets the requirements for eligibility.

The payment of benefits is made possible only because workers' coveredearnings during their working years are recorded under their names and Social Security numbers. Without a Social Security number, you wouldn't be able to apply for Social Security or supplemental security incomebenefits or for Medicare. You wouldn't be able to apply for State run programs either, such as unemployment insurance, public

a .sistance and socialservices, medical 1 .s sistance, aid to families with dependent children, food stamps, and other public aid programs.

But, even if your workis not covered

by Social Security and neither you nor your family need to apply for assistance from state programs, you still need the Social Security number to report income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In many states, you need a Social Security number for a driver's license and motor vehicle registration, and if you are an immigrant, by law you must obtain a Social Security number.

Children and even newborns should have a Social Security number if their parents want to open a bank account, or buy savings bonds, or apply for some type of government services for them. Any children who are age 2 or older must have a Social Security number if their parents want to claim them as dependents on their Federal Income Tax Return.

To get a Social Security number, you have to get Form SS - 5 from any Social Security office and fill it out.

Together with the SS - 5, you have to submit evidence of age, identity, and U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status.

It is a good idea to call the Social Security office first and ask which documents are required. The office personnel will help you get or replace the documents you are missing.

In many states, including Texas, parents of newborn children can apply for a Social Security number at the time they provide informationfor birth registration.

Two weeks after your application and documents are submitted, you will receive your "unique" Social Security number. This special personal number is the only one you will ever have.

Your name can be changed but the number will remain the same. No one should have more than one Social Security number. Otherwise, part of his or her earnings may go to one record or another and the person could lose some rights to benefits. If you have more than one number, you should contact a Social Security office to have your earnings properly credited.

The Social Security Administration makes every effort to record earnings to the right person; and that is why every number must be different. More than 300 million Social Security numbers have been issued, and thousands of names are exactly alike.

The only way you can have your earnings properly recorded is through your personal SocialSecuritynumber.

If you are under 18 and don't have a SocialSecurity number, you can apply by phone by calling 800 - 234- 5772. If you are older than 18, you have to apply in person. But, one way or another, do not delay your application.

It is extremely important to have a Social Security number.

Food For Thought The most important habit for children to form today is the habit·of being able to form an appropriate new habit ~uiekly.

Parents must understand that today's children are not the same youngsters their parents were, nor will they grow into the adults their parents are. Boys and girls who will live in tomorrow's "unknown world" must have.as early as possible, as wide a range of experience as their parents can provide. They must learn early that when things are "different" they are not necessarily"bad."

Yorku letadlem společnosti Pan - Am Ač tento článek byl plánován k ve čtvrtek 9. listopadu před druhou President řádu jmenoval výbor pro schvalení nových členů, Lucille sepsání a otištění v krajanském tisku hodinou odpoledne. V New Yorku se k Dlugoshová, Gertrude Pavliska a Luis začátkem prosince minulého roku tak nám připojili další krajané (jednotlivci Jašek, oni schválili žádost dvou nových k tomu nedošlo k vůli mému vážnému a menší skupiny), s kterými jsme členů: Josef Holub a Paul Heath; Paul onemocnění (chřipka s komplikacemi), pokračovali přes moře jiným letadlem jehož zbytky se mne zuby nehty drží Pan - Am jež nás dovezlo na římské je zeť bratra Netka.

Na listě nemocných je Karel Kurtz, ještě teď začátkem března nynějšího letiště Fiumicino, zvané též Leonardo měl operaci a je v Southeast Baptist roku. . de Vinci, po desáté hodině dopoledne Tolik na vysvětlenou těm co římského času v pátek 10. listopadu.

Narozeniny v měsíci únoru měli Bill Texasu tak i mimo tento stát; děkuji byli odvezeni několika speciálními Pavliska (náš vice - president) a Joe též svým přátelům i všem ostatním co autobusy do hotelu Michelangelo. Ten­ mi přáli buď ústně nebo písemně rychlé to hotel nacházející se asi 5 minut Stryk.

Svatební výročí slavili 24. února uzdravení. chůze od basiliky Svatého Petra a Svatá Anežko česká.

Emil a Evelyn Matula (44 roků), Vaticanu byl · naším týdenním (K její kanonisaci 12. 11. 89.) blahopřejeme vám a přejeme vám domovem během našeho pobytu v hodně zdraví, aby jste mohli oslavovat Svatá -- věčně svatá Římě. Stejný den odpoledne jsme vyrazili v našich třech autokarech jež SVĚTICE ty naší země -tu zlatou svatbu!

Vzpomínka na pouť do Ríma k svatořečení Anežky české .

vody) jsou tu v historickém centru Říma "mastně" při draženy. Považte, dvě malé kopky zmrzliny v kornoutku stály tam dva tisíce lir neboli zhruba jeden a půl dolaru! Ceny tak zvaných upomínkových předmětů, často pouhých tretek, byly takové, že jeden můj známý z Toronta jehož jsem neviděl od meho odjezdu z Kanady v 'roce 1962, je zhodnotil výrokem "to jsou ale palety k neuvěření!"

Stejný den - pátek večer - jsme byli odvezeni našimi autobusy do elegantního hotelu Cavalieri Hilton na recepci pro kardinála Františka Tomáška z Prahy, který v létě minulého roku dovršil 90 let. Pár minut před odjezdem, když spolupoutníci začínali nasedat do autobusů, si na poslední chvíli . . vzpoměla pí. Klečková a sestra ' Elizabeth Riebschlaeger požádat mne o napsání pro obě z nich rozdílné přivítací věty s patřičným oslovením pana kardinála.

Po mém několikaterém pro ně vyslovování a je­ jich po mě opakování nám málem ujely autobusy takže to nevypadalo pro ty připravované deklamace již od jejich zrodu slibně. Nakonec si asi obě pout­ nice zhluboka oddechly jelikož k deklamování nedošlo, protože Jeho Eminence devadesátiletý kardinál Tomášek se pro únavu této recepce nezůčastnil. Pana kardinála zastupoval nový olomoucký biskup František Vaňák, který pronesl velmi krásný pro­ slov a převzal od našeho českotexaského biskupa Jana L. Mořkovského 10 Gallonový klobouk pro pana kardinála. Na banketu měl rovněž kratší proslov biskup zahraničních krajanů Jaroslav Škar­ vada a náš texaský biskup Mořkovský.

Všichni řečníci sklidili velký potlesk.

Banket jako takový (jídlo, pití a obsluha) byl velmi dobrý ikdyž dle některých účastníků z Chicaga či z Clevelandu nebyl zrovna prvotřídní jak by se slušelo a patřilo na takový americký hotel.

Když při psaní tohoto článku si vzpomenu na večeři naší skupiny v sobotu a v neděli (11. a 12. listopadu 89) v restauraci 2 bloky od našeho hotelu Michelangelo tak musím nazvat banketní jídlo s pitím v hotelu Cavalieri Hilton superkrálovským!

Zmíněná restaurace (2 bloky od hotelu, 4 či 5 bloků od velechrámu sv. Petra) nás první večer "uctila" večeří, kde porce mého masa ztěží velikosti 6 čtverečních centimetrů (2 3/8 x 2 3/8 naší anglické míry) byla samé šlachy a místo nože a talíře potřebovala k nakrájení či rozřezání svěrák a pilku!

(Podobné "maso" a velikost porce měla většina naší tam večeřící skupiny.) Zeleninový příkrm byl takové kvality a vzhledu co tu u nás v Americe v potravinářských velkoob­ chodech vyhazují do odpadků. K další večeři v neděli 12. listopadu nám dali kousky kuřat (já měl stehýnko liliputní slípky) koupající se v nějakém oleji s podobnou "zeleninou" jako předešlý den. Navíc k těmto jídlům "pod psa" byla tam nejhorší obsluha jakou jsem kdy v životě viděl anebo o ní slyšel.

(Myslím, že takovou záležitost mohu posoudit jelikož jsem žil přes 3 roky v Anglii, víc jak 10 let v Kanadě, 28 let žiji v USA a cestoval jsem v 15 jiných

K podobnému šizení došlo i u dalších stolů takže nakonec se celá řada členů Klečkovy skupiny shodla, že tomuhle restaurantu na zákaznících vůbec nezáleží jelikož jeho vedení i obsluha ví, že -- ať se děje, co se děje -- budou mít cizincí stále přeplněno, nacházejíc se hned u Vatikánu. Co by asi říkali naši českoameričtí spolupoutníci z Chicaga či Clevelandu na "jídlo" a "obsluhu" ve zmíněném restaurantu, když nebyli příliš spokojeni na recepci v hotelu Cavalieri Hilton?

Nyní se vrátím k sobotě 11. listopadu; k druhému dnu našeho pobytu v Římě. Ten den, kdy bylo slunečno ale citelně chladno, jsme se již po osmé hodině ranní řadili na předem oznámených úsecích svatopeterského náměstí abychom byli připraveni vstoupit v předurčených skupinách do papežské basiliky na českou mši, která

měla být sloužena naším českoamerickým biskupem Janem Ludvíkem Mořkovským. Tato mše však byla dvakrát odložena na pozdější hodinu a nakonec zrušena k vůli sjezdu italských odborových organizací zvaných Bratrství nejsvětějšího srdce Páně z mnoha italských krajů. Tento sjezd měl k disposici basiliku sv. Petra na většinu dne. Během víc jak tříhodinového čekání na svatopeterském náměstí a pak i na vatikánské poště jsem se seznámil s prvními poutníky ze staré vlasti. Tu já i manželé Markovi a řada jiných Texanů jsme se dověděli o víc jak 13,000 těchto poutníků, především z Moravy a z Čech, kteří do Říma přijeli několika zvláštními vlaky, víc jak 130 dálkovými autobusy a též i několika letadly. Do Říma přiletěla na příklad pětasedumdesátičlenná skupina mladých bohoslovců ze semináře v Litoměřicích v severozápadních Čechách. Na kanonizaci přijela též řada jednotlivců a rodin svými osobními auty.

Místo dopolední české mše svaté u sv. Petra měli jsme českou mši v pozdní odpoledne stejného dne v prastaré historické basilice sv. Klemen­ ta, která je vzdálena kolem jedné a půl hodiny pěší chůze od našeho hotelu Michelangelo, nacházejícího se dva bloky od Vatikánu. Marvin Marek s chotí Judy a já jsme šli k sv. Klementu i zpět pěšky prohlížejíc si za této chůze různé římské památnosti. V neděli 12. listopadu několik z nás z Texasu šlo zase v pozdní odpoledle - opět pořádný kus pěšky - do kostela ''U dvanácti apoštolů", kde biskup Liška z Prahy s dalším kněžstvem sloužil českou mši především pro poutníky ze staré vlasti.

Do třetice všeho dobrého; v pondělí 13. listopadu nás zase několik šlo středem Říma k slavnostním závěrečným boholužbám k pouti na svatořečení

Anežky české do kostela "sv. Pavla za hradbami." Tuto mši sloužil kardinál Josef Tomko, jemuž přisluhoval ar­ cibiskup Sokol z Trnavy, všichni v Římě přítomní biskupové z Československa, biskup zahraničních krajanů Jaroslav Škarvada a náš Jan L. Mořkovský, biskup českého Tex­ asu. Této slavnostní mše se zúčastnilo kolem 200 kněží, kteří se též podíleli během mešních obřadů na bohoslužbách. Mimochodem: kardinál Josef Tomko jež se narodil v košické diecési na Slovensku sídlí v Římě, kde je prefektem kongregace pro evangelizaci národů. Tato mše byla pro velkou většinu poutníků z Československa rozloučením s Římem, poněvadž řada jejich autokarů vyrazila ještě ten den večer na zpáteční cestu do vlasti.

Při této příležitosti se alespoň trochu rozepíši o faktech týkajících se našich milených poutníků ze staré vlasti. Pouť do Říma připravoval zvláštní výbor pražského arcibiskupství v čele se světícím biskupem Antonínem Liškou z Prahy. Původně se v Římě myslilo, že z Československa přijede nejvíc tak 1500 lidí; později počet se změnil na sedum a půl tisíce věřících a nakonec, jak se zmiňuji na začátku tohoto článku, přijelo na tuto největší kdy českou pouť do Říma ze staré vlasti víc jak 13,000 věřících! Na přípravě cesty tolika lidí se obětavě podílela celá řada spolupracovníků pražského výboru v různých místech v Čechách, na Moravě i na Slovensku. Výboru též pomáhali příslušníci lidové strany, která tež vypravila okresní a místní zájezdy z řady míst Moravy i Čech. Kromě infor­ mačního dopisu a programu vydal pražský výbor poutníkům brožury Svatořečení blahoslavené Anežky české a Po stopách českých poutníků do Říma. Všechny vlaky i autokary měly průvodce připravené výborem ar­ cibiskupství; zájezdy cestovních kanceláří měly kolem toho ještě své vlastní průvodce. Autobusy měly 2 šoféry, kteří se při jízdě střídali.

Všichni poutníci měli pak v Římě na svých oděvech 3.8 cm x 8.75 cm (11/2 "x 3 1/2") v naších anglických mírách) krásný tkaný emblém v národních barvách, který pro pouť navrhl akademický malíř Jiří Blažek. Tento emblém, nahoře s naprsem "Svatořečení Anežky české, Řím 12.

11. . 19~9," poc~ází, v podstatě z klasického . heraldického znaku rádu křižovníků s červenou hvězdou, který založila naše Anežka Přemyslovna.

Poutní autokary z Československa měly duď nad předním oknem nebo dole na boku tohoto okna výrazný nápis "Pouť do Ríma" se jménem města, okresu či kraje odkud přijely.

Dopravní ruch v Římě je hrozný (dle mého odhadu horší než v Paříži), všude navíc je tu též plno aut zaparkovaných kde se dá, bez ohledu na jiná vozidla, často v neuvěřitelných místech. Z těchto důvodů člověk musil opravdu obdivovat řidiče velkých autokarů z Československa, kteří se skvěle zhostili svých úkolů včetně parkování. Poutnici ze staré vlasti byli dobře organizováni a krásně representovali jádro národa. Byli to lidé všech vrstev i všech věků, převládali však mezi nimi mladí. Byli ukáznění, zbožní a ohleduplní; dodnes je mé srdce naplněno hrdostí, když na ně na římské pouti vzpomínám a o nich píši. .Jak byli naši poutníci z Československa připraveni na římský shon ukazuje následující skutečnost: Když z přeplněných kostelů a basilik se vyhrnula spousta poutníků tak vedoucí každé autobusové skupiny vztyčil na jeden a půl metrové holi vysoko nad hlavy svého okolí tabulku s příslušným

Jedno z nejzajímavějších muzeí v Sovět­ Farmaceutické muzeum v Moskvě, které navštěvují každoročně tisíce domácích a zahraničních návštěv­ níků.

K nejslavnějším exponátům muzea patří první 'lékařská encyklopedie na světě Ebersův papyrus, který byl nalezen v minu­ lém století v jedné thébské hrobce. Již staří Egypťané znali více než osmdesát předpisů na nejrůznější léky, většinou kapky, masti a práškové přípravky. Jako příklad je možno uvést lék proti migréně, který obsahoval želví mozek, račí hlavu, antilopí lejno, zub vepře, kočičí vnitřnosti a ještěrčí krev. To vše se smíchalo, usušilo na slunci a rozměl-

Úspěšný experiment Jedním z nově vybudovaných pracovišť, schopných výrazně obohatit · trh o zajímavé pokojové rostliny, je moderní Laboratoř rostlinných explantátů v Hluboké nad Vltavou (Jihočeský kraj). Pracoviště slouží pro vegetativní množení a šlechtění rostlin, což v praxi znamená, že se nepatrné vzorky tkáně rostlin odeberou pod mikroskopem a oživují v přísně sterilním prostředí speciálních živných roztoků. Ty se tak stávají základem pro další, naprosto zdravé jedince.

Navíc zde pracují většinou s bylinami, jejichž množení v přirozených podmínkách je velmi obtížné.

Perspektivně počítají pracovníci Laboratoře i s vývozem netradičních rostlin a květů do zahraničí.

Ač bylo takřa nadlidským sehnat v tak krátké době pro takovou spoustu lidí nocleh tak nakonec všichni říkali, že svatá Anežka se o to postarala i když v některých případech se poutníci museli velmi uskrovnit a spokojit se s tím nejnutnějším. Někteří bydleli 60 až 100 kilometrů od Říma a na slavnosti (svatořečení naší Anežky české, slav­ nostní české mše 11., 12. a 13. listopadu večer, audience s Papežem Janem Pavlem II, návštěvy dalších římských kostelů atd.) dojížděli.

Většina ·z poutníků si přivezla sebou z domova i jídlo na ty dny. Nakonec bylo možno vyrovnat všechny dluhy díky krajanům ze zahraničí, kteří přispěli na pobyt těch poutníků co neměli dostatečné valuty pro ubytování.
