Correction To District II Letter Dear District II Readers: Please disregard the part in my last letter about the $2.50 charge per person at the spring meeting, which was an error on my part.

The $2.50 is in my minutes as the amount the district will give the hosting lodge toward the cost of the meal, the dinner at the meeting will be NO charge 'to the members and guests.

Please accept my apology ·for any problems this may have caused.

I hope to see many of you at the spring meeting in Taylor; remember registration is at 1:00 p.m. and the meeting is at 2:00 p.m. This is an important business meeting, so please try and attend.

Reading of the minutes from· our last meeting was by Barbara Hykel, who also read a letter from Supreme Lodgeconcerning one of our members becoming 96years of age in 1990, who is none other than Aunt Katie Krizan.

In the letter, they stated if we, the lodge or family, would or could have a special day ofsome type of celebration

for her. The family anď officers will decide on this later.

Our Treasurer Karen Kroll was hot present.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her report on youth club activities; a Valentine Party was held at our lodge Friday night, February 9 for all the youth and adults. Games were also played, Valentines were exchanged, snacks consisting· of sandwiches, chips, cookies strudels, dips, cup cakes decorated with Valentines' candies and tea were erijoyedby all whowere present. Most of these goodies were brought by members and we thank them.

Vice President Joseph Krizan read a letter from Supreme Lodge explaining the Tarok and Domino Tournaments.

He also reminded those who do 'volunteer services for the lodge to be sure and fill the worksheet, hours· of the day they do in the year, which is very important 'to the Supreme Lodge.

The work sheet will be handed out 'to you at our next meeting.

We are glad to report that ourlodge had a couple'to represent ourlodge in the Mid - Winter Tarok Tournament at LodgeNo. 47 (SeatonHall) on January 13, 1990. They were Henry and Christine Matus who are very active members of our lodge. They donated a gift for our door prize at our last meeting, which was won by Mary Marek. _ We lost · one · of · our longtime members, Brother L.B. Dobecka, age 87, who passed away on February 5, 1990 at the West CommunityHospital.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m, Tuesday at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West. Burial Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church and burial

The ladies who prepared the meal were Martha Monthei, Mary Lander, Dorothy Machac, Eddie Ray Hrabal and Josie Mae Straten. The family would like to say "Many Thanks" to you all for helping out.

There were many gifts donated for our door prizes at the last meeting, which was the future special Valentine's Day. Members who donated gifts included Joe Kotch and his wife, Bobby Dobecka and family, Willie Mae Schuetz, Robert and Lydia Dobecka, Raymond and Mary Marek.

Get well cards were sent to Dorothy Hykel, Raymond Lenart, Henry Matus and Ceila Dobecka and sympathy card to Ernest Kolar.

George and Josie Mae Straten prepared a good dinner at our last meeting, which consisted of barbecue beef, pork sausage with 7 variety of different dishes, including sweets (strudel, pies, kolache, banana pudding, cookies, peach cobbler and decorated cup cakes with Valentine candy hearts) that were brought by members; tea was also included. We thank you for preparing this meal and bringing all those sweets.

At our next meeting, the youth club will have a kite - flying contest again, so children bring your favorite kite .. and make it fly. If the weather

permits, you may win, the rules are as always.

Raymond and Mary Marek will prepare a surprise dinner for us at the next meeting; so don't be wondering just come out and find out, you are invited.

The regular door prize of the day went to Peggy Dobecka and the progressive prize names drawn were: First $10 -- Betty Jean Pavlas, second $10 -- Blake Straten; beginning of third $1 prize -- Bessie Valek; none of these three was present.

Lodge No.13, Dime Box Sixteen members ofl.odge 13 met at the SPJST Hall in Dime Box on February 18 for the regular monthly meeting.

President Ricky Ford called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The pledge to the flag was recited by all present.

Roll call of officers revealed eleven present and two absent. Secretary Dorothy Rackel read the last month's minutes. Treasurer Debbie Kostelka gave the treasurer's report. All reports were accepted as read.

A moment of silence was held for our deceased members, Gerald Weaver and Randy Kocurek.

Last month we discussed a "Dime Box Time Box Chautaugua." After having a meeting with more town people attending, it was decided at our lodge meeting that the lodge hall would not be usedfor headquarters.

Lodge 13 will have their annual SPJST Picnic on Sunday, May 27th.

Barbecue chicken will be sold beginning at 9:30a.m.; a country store and bake sale will open around 10 a.m.

We willhave a barbecue cook - off and a horseshoe throwing contest, The youth will be in charge· of the dunking pond. There will also be an auction and socialgames. Snow cones, popcorn and hamburgers will also be available in the afternoon and evening hours, as well as plenty of cold drinks.

Anyone wishing 'to volunteer to work at any of these activities, please let your wishes be known.

Cleanup days have been scheduled "for April 22nd and May 19th.

Our next SPJST meeting will be held Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m.

Lodge N Q. 15, Buckholts Dear Members and Friends: lodge No. 15 of Buckholtshad their monthly meeting on Sunday, February 11th. The meeting was called to order

by President Gladys Allison.

After Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members, Secretary Louise Sakewitz read the minutes of our last meeting, which were approved as read. A financial report was also given.

A motion was made and approved to donate money to former District IV Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger who has a serious illness.

There were nineteen members and four visitors, Elvern Frenzel, Frank Janicek, Ellie Cross and Evelyn Pfansteil, present. We welcome you and come again.

Member Anton Svetlikis on the sick list. We hope he 's doing better.

Our local lodge will hold a "42" DominoPlayoffon Friday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. for all members who would like to participate. The winners may advance to State "42" Tournament on April 7 at lodge No. 47 in Seaton.

We have several members who will be receiving their 50 - year pins this year, we will be deciding what we will have and what day and time at our next meeting, so keep that in mind if anyone has any ideas.

Louise Zavodny gave the board report. Also reports were given by the

various committee chairmen for the month of January. lodge 24 will be hosting the State Straight Domino Tournament on March 24. Wilbert Mikeska will be in charge of the noon meal, Billy Smetanka will be in charge of getting tables and basically getting the tournament organized.

The members decided to replace shrubs in the front planter, Michael Carpenter willtake care of buying new plants and putting them in.

There were several donations made to charities by ourlodge; they were for Susan Bohnenberger, who had the fund - raiser dance at Seaton Star Hall (not many of our members were able to attend, but we were able to send $400which I hope will cover for us not being there). We also donated to the Scott and White Children 's Miracle Network -- $200.A donation was made to East Bell CountyBoosters Club and to lodge No. 24 Youth Oub. (I'm not sure of the dollar amount of these two clubs.)

Door prizes were won by Jennifer Ashcraft, Michael Harvell, LaVerne Cabla and Wilbert Mikeska.

I want to thank Bernise Sebek for taking notes for me at the meeting while I was on vacation.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas Dear Members and Friends of Lodge 84: Lots of new things are happening at Lodge 84 that you need to know about.

On the weekend of March 17 - 18 Lodge 84 will celebrate its 80th Anniversary! We have a dance scheduled for March 17 beginning at 8:30 p.m. with the Czech Harvesters providing the music. Special Feature will be a polka and waltz contest, with announcement of the winners to be revealed at the dinner· on Sunday, March 18th. Sunday, March 18,: the doors of Lodge 84 will open for the Anniversary Dinner, which will be served from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m.

Roast beef, mushroom gravy, parsley potatoes, green beans, salad, bread, and coffee or tea will be on the menu and the cost is $6 for adults and $3 for our dearly - departed members; awards of "Brother and Sister of the Year," 50 - year pins, "Fraternalist of the Year;" and will end with a program by

the Junior and Teen Clubs. The meal will be catered by Bessie's Wedding and Catering Service, so you won't want to miss out. Also, our young people have always provided an en­ joyable program, each one better than the last, so come and plan to spend the day. You won't be sorry!

Lodge No. 88, Houston News On February 12, 1990 we had our monthly meeting with a good attendance, which was surprising, since so many of our members are ill with the flu.

President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting at 7:30p.m. with Darlene and Marlene Migl and Crystal Wallace presenting the flags and the Pledge of Allegiance was then recited by the members.

President Jerry read the names of the deceased in January, namely, Frank Broz, Henry Hruba, Emil Slanina, LouisZalesky,Jerry Kolacny, Carl Dullanyand Charlie Florian, after which a moment of silence was held · for our departed members.

The minutes were read and approved after a few corrections. The secretary also read acknowlegements from Susan Bohnenberger, who has been ill for some time, and she received help from a benefit dance given by our lodge; Mrs. Naomi . Spencer who lost her husband, Arnold; the Florian family; from Mrs. Olexa's children, and Frank Broz family; also had a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar congratulating the 5 top fraternalists, which included our · own Tillie Helmcamp of Lodge 88. Her sister, Viola Cox, wrote a beautiful letter about her sister, Tillie, who worked very hard for our lodge. We should also appreciate what she has done.

Donna Snell, sister of our Legal Advisor Richard Snell, was initiated, and we are happy to have her as a member. because she has promised to become very active. It seems she's interested in the youth. When she was a member of the youth club a few years ago, she really put· on some professional dancing for us. We need your help, Donna.

Sunday, February 11, was a nice day for our lodge's 25th anniversary; only the attendance was light in comparison to other years due to very little publicity. I do hope that won't happen again.

We had a dance from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with Ray Jurecka playing.

The music was beautiful and those who danced enjoyed it very much.

Our very active youth announced that they will attend the rodeo here in Houston, which starts Sunday, February 18, and on March 10, they'll go ice - skating.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Coxhad a very profitable year in 1989, but says 1990 willbe the best because

January was a wonderful month.

Harley had a battle dance scheduled for February 24 and on March 10 has another battle dance with Vrazels and Lee Roy Matocha -- time from 8:00 p.m. to 1 :00 a.m.; $7 per person.

Roy Stonaker, the assistant to · Margaret Allbritton, for the Blue Roomannounced the Blue Room Party for Sunday, April 22 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a chicken fried steak dinner, drinks and a dance by Donnie Wavra. The price is $12.50per person, which is reasonable when you consider the fun you can have.

Treasurer lillie Spies thanked all the ladies who brought pastry and those who helped in the booth. She also invited all for February 14, when they'll serve spaghetti and salad.

President Marceil Malak· of the Dramatic Club announced a puppet show, put on by Jan Schroif, which took place Sunday, February 11 in the Youth Room. Everyone who saw it. was so impressed with it. We'll see if Jan might put on this show at our monthly meeting. On April 1, we'll have an English play and May 20 a Czech play. As soon as I get the particulars, I'll write more about it.

FAC Homer Alexander explained how much work he does in his line of work; also on April 5 and 6, he will have a Defensive Driving Course at Lodge 88 from 9:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m., so if you need to sign up let him know as soon as possible.

Reports from Eugene Barcak who's president of the Choral Group, and Kathy Jolly, secretary of the Czech Concert Orchestra, also stated how busy they are because their music and singing is so in demand all over the City of Houston, and many neighboring towns; just call them, they are ready·for you.

Mrs. Ed (WillieMae) Stang was in the hospital for 3 weeks after open heart surgery. Sheis at home now and gradually getting stronger. Her husband, Ed, is proving to be a good maid, and with Betty Dobesh, their daughter, assisting him, she'll soon be well again.

Brother Bill Souchek is starting his 17th term of Czech classes · on February 19th. He says he has a big class again. and at 84 years of age he's so full of enthusiasm that it would encourage anybody to participate in his class. The humor he has in teaching these classes is so important.

District VPresident Evelyn Mikeska visited our meeting and announced the District V meeting on March 11 at Lodge 142. They will have a beef barbecue. This will be a big day with Lodge 88 Choral Group and the Czech Concert Orchestra entertaining. We are looking forward to a big day.

District V Director Louis Hanus gave us a synopsis of their 3 - day meeting in Temple, which we all erijoyed and all of us needed that information.

Helen Hegwood also spoke · on insurance, she's · our State Field Representative, and I mean a good one -- never too busyto help us.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Happenings Dear Members and Friends: Time sure is going fast and, especially, when one is older. I don't think time seemed to go so fast when we were in school.

Here we are close to closing 1900s with several things approaching fast -­ the income tax, property tax, health care insurance, automobile insurance; then let's hope people think about life insurance. We certainly don't wantto put a burden on someone else when we pass away. That's why our SPJST tries to get sales representatives to see that people have coverage when something does happen. Age means nothing nowadays because there are cars that have high speed and there are more cars than a few years ago, 'so the risk of accidents is much greater.

The death rate of automobile accident is high; insurance is cheap when you need it! The cost of a burial is higher, also, so when someonetries to sell you an SPJST life insurance policy, don't turn them away.

This February has been a warm month up to . now' however' the weatherman says that's going to · change soon. It's bad because the flowers and rose bushes are starting 'to bud out, also, a little south of here, fruit trees are blooming which means. if. too hard a freeze -- no fruit, again.

It also seemsthat St. Augustine grass is frozen in these parts of Texas. I hope the Bermuda grass will come out, not only because we hate to get the lawnmowers out, but when there is a green lawn, the yard looks so pretty.

It was good to read the Vestnik of all our Supreme Lodge officers' reports.

They have all given good reports and we are pleased to have such good officersto manage the SPJST business matters, which means that · our organization is a good one and everyone wants to keep it that way.

The rest of the SPJSTmembers and I want to congratulate Brother Alvin Sefcik of Lodge No. 172, who is State Fraternalist of 1989; and to all the other fraternalists of each lodge: you have done wonderful or you wouldn't have been chosen to represent your lodge. In fact, all of you are winners in our hearts!

We were sorry to hear abouť our longtime friend, Mary Svitak, passing away who was a member of lodge No.

Millie Waters, who stays in the hospital a lot, still isn't doing too well; at present time, she is at home and would enjoy a visit from you. Millie was alwaysjolly and now it's sad to see her so ill.

I haven't seen Sister Bennie Bartek, lately, but we ask about her often, who is unable to take care of herself. Her friends have to take her to the stores.

Sister Bartek, we miss you at· our meetings; tryto attend again.

Sister Frances Tirk, also a faithful member, has been unable to attend activities at our lodge, however, her daughter, Lydia Alholm, brings her but cannot stay for along time.

One thing we do: we remember our older members who are the ones who kept our lodge for us, therefore, we have to keep the organization · for our younger·folks.

I'm always hearing that Sisters liz Howard, Victoria Murphy, Evelyn Spacek, Helen Kubala and Lydia Alholmwiri money at different games; it could be games here or even in las Vegas. One thing we haven't heard: How much they have lost? (Just kidding!) Anyway we're glad you are winning. (I'm sure the IRS enjoys the tax they receive from their winnings.)

Our February meeting was a little short and rushed due to the dance following our meeting. These dances start at 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. Our 154. The Svitak family was a large members attend meetings at 2:00p.m. family and now there are only two and then there is a dance· on that sisters left, namely, Annie and Agnes Sunday and if you attend the entire who were also Sokol members and lodge monthly meeting, at 2:00 p.m., drilled in their younger days. Even though she was a large friends with a small admission. We lady, she won lots of trophies as a welcomeeach of you anytime.

A decorating cake contest, with several beautiful cakes. were entered at the Valentine Dance. The judges had a hard time selecting winners.

The adult winners were: 1st place -· Florence Greer, 2nd -- Helen Kubala, 3rd -- Clara Cohen; 4th -- Louise Oujesky. Youth contest results were: 1st place -- Ondy Jones, 2nd -­ Melis s a Hubenak, 3rd -- Jolie Paprskar, 4th -- Allison Gandy.

There was also a drawing · for king queen for that evening, namely: King -- Nolan Allen, Queen -- lelean Chustensen, Duchess -- Holly Hubenak, Duke -- Gary Greener.

We had several people from Arlington, Dallas and Irving, etc. It was nice to have two bands at the dance, at ieast the dancers had a chance to dance and enjoy the evening. The Cen - Tex and Czech Mates, and the Sulak Band played which seemed as if everyone had a good time; if only the bands wouldn't play so loud which would sound better and be more enjoyableand also people wouldn't go deaf who wear a hearing aid.

Our lodge manager, Joyce Tesar, had the nicest decorations for this Valentine's Danceand, always, does a fine job keeping the facilities clean.

After all the talk and writing about the roof, the white roof was finally put on the building which can be seen from the road while approaching our lodge home. The roof has a new type of material on it which we hope never leaks and it's very expensive, also much lighter than tar and gravel.

Air Base.) The money came in handy so we could pay·for the roof. A while back, it was voted on to sell the land north of our 'lodge. (The people who would buy, will build a building who trains youth for Olympics like soccer and other indoor sports, which wouldn't interfere with anything at our lodge.) This sale, again, would help our expense with the roof and whatever else our lodge would do to improve our building, later.

Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham, as always, sends birthday cards to our members over 65 years of age, namely: Brothers Frank Karlicek, John lackey, Frank Quirk, Alfred Svacek and Sisters Bennie Bartek, Gertrude Botik, Clara Cohen, Josephine Chilson, Vlasta Dolkos, Frances Herzig, Mary Motl and Nina Shepelwich. Danbury lodge No. 139 was honored with a visit by District V President Evelyn Mikeska at the February 14th meeting. President Mikeska expressed pleasure at being able to attend the meeting and invited lodge members to attend the March District V meeting which will be held at lodge No. 142 in Houston.

With our President Lonnie lostak being out · of towri on business and "snowed - in" in Chicago, Vice President Monte Baldwin called the meeting to order with the members reciting the SPJST Motto.

On Sunday, February 11, 1990, at 2:00 p.m., President Dennis Hermis called our monthly meeting to order.

We had forty - four members and four guests, who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary held roll call of officers and board of trustees; all were present.

All officers' reports were read. The minutes from our previous meeting were accepted as read.

Under correspondence, Secretary Alice Jochen read a thank you note from District V President Evelyn Mikeska who thanked Lodge No. 142 members for inviting her to our Christmas Party which she enjoyed very much.

Fifty - year membership pins were announced for two members from lodge No. 142, namely, Helen Lucilla Barnes and Christine Ermis.

District V spring meeting will be held at Lodge No. 142 on Sunday, March 11, 1990. Barbecue brisket and all the trimmings will be served beginning at 11 :30 a.m. for $4.50 per adult and $2.50 per child. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. There will be a social and door prizes will be given away.

The SPJSTofficers' workshop to be held February 24 at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone beginning at 10:00 a.m. · Capsule attendance prize of $100 went unclaimed, again, due to the absence of Raymond Zievert and Jerry Zapalac. Next month we draw for $100,. again. Come to our meeting because you may be the lucky one.

Consolation prizes went to libby Kovar and Rosie Sehilhab.

We had one new member, Joseph Kubeczka, Jr., signed up by Sales Representative Dennis Hermis and one additional insurance policy was credited to Sales Representative Sidon Tumis.

Birthday celebrants for .February were Fred Buri, Jr. (February 29) and Rudy Cernuch (February 25).

Anniversaries for February were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buri, Jr. (25 years, February 27); Mr. and Mrs. Gus Florian (49 years, February 23); Mr. and Mrs. Bertin Doskocil (52 years).

Oldest member present prize went to Sidon Tumis.

It's wonderful that our friends at Lodge No. 172 have joined in our eye glass program at Lodge No. 88 to assist those needy persons obtain eye glasses free of charge for each pair of old ones.

This isn't the first time that lodge 172 has contributed to this cause. All of us at Lodge 88 send many thanks for your kindness and generosity.

Our own song bird, Helen Hegwood, has spent many hours on many occasions collecting used eye­ glasses from friends in the Tea Cup Bowling League and also from the 8:00 a.m. Mass Group from All Saints Catholic Church. Helen, we salute you! lodge Recording Secretary Mildred Holeman hasn't been letting any grass grow under her feet, either. Mildred has been flushing out the bushes for old glasses and has gotten results.

Sunshine Chaírman Mary Kosut asked to read a Valentine poem entitled "love." She then reported on all the cards she sent.

President Kathy Trefell gave a candy Valentine to all her officers, which was such a kind thing to do.

Kathy asked if we'd like to go eat out again; of course, that's something the club loves to hear. Virginia Hale made a motion, seconded by Marie Pokluda to go to Ryan's Steak House on February 28, 1990 at 11:00 a.m. for a Mage bar dinner. The motion passed and we are all looking·forward to a big time.

The hostesses for February were Betty Kulhanek, Chairman Josephine Buri, Esther Holton and Bessie Dewer.

Our hostesses· for March are Bessie Lero who's cooking for Mary Kosut, Martha Walla, Josephine Bishop and Alice Bily. We are looking for a big lunch -- all good cooks.

The following sisters have a birthday in February, namely, Josephine Bishop, Ann Hoffman, Martha Walla, Mary Johnson and Frances Dvorak (honorary member).

We were so sorry that Ann Hoffman had a slight heart attack, but is doing better. Frances Dvorak is missed, too, but there are many changes in life in store for all of us. "Happy Birthday" was sung with Helen Hegwood leading.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting on February 7 was called to order by our President Jo Prochaska, She made welcome our guest Jewell Oark. It's always nice to have her present.

We were led in the Pledge of Allegiance. .

The minutes were read by Merel Kovar and treasurer's report by Lydia Alholm; they were approved as read.

An expression of thanks was read from Agnes Owen, and Billie Starr expressed her thanks while ill to be remembered. She was still under the weather at the meeting and we hope she is well by our next meeting.

Elma Anderson also expressed her thanks· for remembering her daughter, Janet Steelman.

We were happy to hear Mary Perricone wasn't seriously injured, where one of the passengers died in a car wreck from complication· following.

Anna Johnson reported on all the cards sent.

Jo Prochaska reminded us of a speaker on Citizens Against Crime on Personal Assult will speak at 11 a.m. at our March 7 meeting. We must have at last 25 members present. We had 37 members in February, so be back. Guests who would like · to come · may bring a covered dish instead of paying $3 for the lunch; would love to have you at the St. Thomas Parish Hall, 2920 Azle Avenue.

Jo extended her thanks to Mary Perricone for her donation of supplies for the club.

Bessie Prochaska, our former member, is now in the Grove Retirement Center, 4440 E. Lancaster, · after someone broke into her home and assaulted her and she was saved by the screams of her sister who was spending the night with her after Bessie just got out of the hospital. Dear Readers: I guess from the date of this event, you can tell that I'm just a little behind on my news. Yes, finally, when it's almost time for a new camp season, I am getting this letter written. I could blame it on Kyle, but the truth is, I just found the pictures when I was working on my income tax return. So here it is. I hope I don't forget anything important.

District I camped at Camp Val Verde in July, 1989. This was our first time in several years not to be camping with District IV. We really missed camping with our old friends.

We carried out the 1989 Camp Theme of Flight by decorating kites and trying to fly them. We also had a video night where we watched flight of the Navigator. Our camp craft was decorated T - shirts and wooden heart necklaces for the girls and airplanes for the boys. Thanks to Mrs. Ann · for all her help in the craft hut.

Our days were filled with normal camp activities such as swimming, canoeing, horseback riding , craft, hiking and game playing. The nights were varied with a cookout one night and a hayride. We had night swims and water games. On the morning we left, we had another successful balloon lift. Awards were given to best campers and handmade certificates were given to our great LlTs. Speaking ofLITs -- ours were great!

We were pleased to have six LITs -­ more than any other year. The LITs were lana Urbanovsky and Holly Suehs from Lodge No. 17, Trudy Krenek, Susan Spacek and Michael Whitsel from Lodge No. 13 and Jason Reese, a recruited LIT from Lodge No. 47 in District II. These young leaders were a great help at camp. Let's. hope they come back this year. · Enclosed are a few pictures from 1989 camp. Take a look at these and just think, in a few months we'll be back. Hope to see you there.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 92, Fort Worth Valentine's Dance Hi! It's been a whilesince I have written but, as everyone knows, I have been very busy.

The youth club had their Valentine Dance on Sunday, February 11th. We also had a cake decorating contest.

The winners in adult divisionwere: 1st place -- Florence Greer, 2nd -- Helen Kubala, 3rd -- Clara Cohen, 4th -­ Louise Oujesky.

In the youth (pre - teen) category cake decorating contest winners included: 1st place --Ondy Jones, 2nd -- Melissa Hubenak, 3rd -- Jolie Paprskar, 4th -- AllisonGandy.

The cakes were very pretty and then were put in the cake walkfor the youth club.

We want to thank everyone who brought cakes and also thanks to the judges for judging the cakes, namely, Diane Sulak of Ennis, Lydia Sulak of Duncanville and Marie Vrla of Red Oak. We also had a Valentine Queen Lelean Chustensen and King Nolen Allen, Duchess Holly Hubenak and Duke Gary Greener.

Everyone had a good time. I hope to see you at the next Lodge No. 92 meeting and dance.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Discuss Fund-Raiser Dear Members and Friends: On February 4, 1990, at 1 :35 p.m., Lodge 17 held a meeting.

We talked about the February 25 fund - raiser. We are going to have chicken and dumplings and cake auction. We also passed out tickets to sell in advance.

We also talked about what we were going to do after the meeting. The youth from ages 10 and younger went skating and those from: ages 11 and older went bowling. Afterward, we went to McDonald's to eat ice cream.

JOHN T. SEFCIK, We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 148, El who passed away on Friday, January Maton on behalf of our entire 19, 1990 in a Caldwell hospital. membership, wish to express · our Brother Sefcikhad attained the age of deepest and sincere sympathy to the 85 years.

Brother Sefcik was born on bereaved family of our departed lodge sister February 25, 1904 in the Uriion community in Burleson County, the son of the late George A. Sefcik, Sr. and Frances Kubin. He was a retired farmer and rancher. He was a lifelong member of the New Tabor Brethren Church. He was baptized June 5, 1904

by J. Juran. He attended Union School until the 7th grade. He served his church faithfully and attended regularly. He was a member of the New Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17. He will best be remembered for his willingness to help others in any way he possibly could. He enjoyed farming, ranching, gardening and fishing. He loved visiting with family and friends. He married Stacie Ondrasek on December 21, 1926. They were married for over 63 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Lydia Stefka, Valasta Herrman, Albina Sefcik and Frances Hanacik; four brothers, Frank, Joe, Henry and George Sefcik DOROTHY G. HAHN, who passed away at St. Luke's and two infant brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Stasie Hospital in Houston on January 16, Sefcik of Caldwell; three daughters 1990 at the age of 61 years.

Sister Hahn was born on December and sons - in - law, Mildred and Dan 15, 1928 in Freestone County, the Houdek of Bryan, Gladys and J.P. daughter of Lena Rivers Harris Helms Watson of North Zulch, Emily and of El Maton and the late Leslie Jody Terry Welch of Bryan; two sons and daughters - in - law, Arnold and Nicholas.

She was a member of SPJSTfor 19 Emilie Sefcik of Texas Oty, Johnny years and held offices as secretary, and Jerry Sefcik of Houston; 14 3 great and treasurer · for our local lodge. She grandchildren, was also an active member· of St. granddaughters , 7 great - grandsons; Peter's Catholic Church and Altar four sisters - in - law, Lexie Sefcik, Lydia Sefcik, Milite Ondrasek, Julie Societyof Blessing, Texas.

Sister Dorothyworked at Matagorda Ondrasek; numerous nieces and General Hospital in Bay Oty, but friends plus a host of friends.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. retired after 10 years of service to the Tidehaven Independent School Saturday, January 20 from the Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Wednesday, February 28, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/13 Services for Colleen Ann Howell, age '50, were held on the following Monday at Lakeview Funeral Home, Longview, with the Rev. Slim Sullivan officiating. Burial was at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Born in Livingston, Texas, September 16, 1939, Colleen and her family moved from Houston to Longview in 1968. Colleen was a graduate of Sam Houston State University, a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, The Kappa Delta Sorority, Calvery Baptist Church, SPJST lodge No. 178, and a lifelong member of VFW Post 4002 ladies Auxiliary.

Colleen was a 6th grade teacher at Foster Middle school since 1974.

She was a dedicated fraternalist, a fine lady who was always first to reach out and give a friendly hand in her own compassionate way. She will be dearly missed by the people and community. which surrounded her.

Survivors include her husband, Joe M. Howell of Longview; daughter, Jodie Carlson of Orlando, Florida; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Martin of Kilgore; sister, Robbye Rowe of Kilgore; grandchildren, Joshua Carlson of Orlando, Florida and William Chase of Arlington, Texas and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jim Reed, Jerry Wallace, Buster Turner, Loye Alvis, les Wiesner and Johnny McDowell.

Colleen was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Chase, age 27, of Arlington, Texas in December, 1989, just one month prior to her death.

Brother Krueger was borri on April 22, 1921 'to the late William E. Krueger and Louise Schubert in Lyons, Texas. He retired, a machinist, from International Shoe Factory in June, 1981. He was also a hay farmer and a cattle rancher. He erijoyed working with his cattle and helping other people.

Brother Krueger was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat, a member of SPJST lodge No. 186, Caldwell and a member· of Hermann "Sons Lodge No. 301, Deanville.

He served in Company "B" of the 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion in Germany with the U.S. Army during World War II. He attained the rank of PFC - MP and received two bronze stars.

Brother Krueger married Margaret Carrie Knesek on Oétober 25, 1947 at Frenstat. · He was preceded in death by one son, Gene Krueger; one grandson, Donnie Krueger and one sister, Lois Gerland.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Krueger · of Birch; · one daughter, Janice Kotch and husband, Jim of Frenstat; two sons, Dennis Kruger and wife, Debbie of Frenstat and Jeff Krueger of Birch; two sisters, Esther Shupak of Caldwell and Gladys Fojtikof Houston; one brother, Walter Krueger · of College Station; 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

A Christian Wake was held at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 18 from the Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Sunday, November 19 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat, with .

Interment was in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat.

Malý, neposedný Petříček vyrušoval a poštúchoval spolužáky v obecné škole.

Trápilo to jeho rodiče tolik, že ho dali zapsat do katolické školy kde jeptišky významně vyučovaly žáky. Za šest týdnů malý Petříček skrotil a uklí­ dnil se. Rodiče měli s toho velkou radost a ptali se, "Jak je to že teď přinášíš dobré známky?''

V prosince minulého roku zemřel významný slezský básník Óndra Lysohorský. Vlastním jménem doc.

PhDr. Ervín Goj, narodil se 6. července 1905 ve Frýdku jako deváté dítě havíře z šachty "Albrecht."

Vyrůstal v typickém dvojjazyčném prostředí starého Frýdku. Vystudoval německé gymnázium ve Frýdku, Ostravě a studia ukončil doktorátem na německé universitě v Praze roku

1928. Od konce roku 1930 až do nacistické okupace působil jako středoškolský profesor na Slovensku.

Prožil dětství a jinošství v chudobě, na úpatí Beskyd, pod Lysou horou, po­ dle níž přijal básnické příjmení. Jméno Ondra přijal podle známého lašského selského rebela. Ondráše z počátku osmnáctého století. Do literatury jej uvedl svou předmluvou k lašsky psaným básním sbírky SPIWAJUCO PIAŠé (1934) F.X. Šalda. O rok později vyšla lašská sbírka HLOS HRUDY, v roce 1936 WYBRANE WÉRŠÉ. Většina pokrokové kritiky v něm uvítala silnou básnickou osobnost hlubokého humanistického ražení, která ve svých verších objevila vedle Petra Buzruče sociálně bědný, ale krásný lašský kraj.

Lysohorský napsal: "Lašsky jazyk, w širokych rysach, je mluva ludu w sewerowychodní Morawě, w starym 'rakuskym Šlónskú' aw Hučinsku. Od západního jazyka českého a poledniho slowénskeho se rozeznowo hlawňe akcéntém na předostatni slabice, od wychodniho jazyka polskeho hlawňe ňedostatkém nosowych samohlosek.

Bodej se wi, že slowo 'lašsky' ňeznači žodén prozny pojém katedry, ale že oz­ načuje wšelijakými ménami (na př. lašsky, morawsky, šlónsky a t. d.) jazyk, kěreho užiwaju přybližňe dwa milijóny ludži."

Po nacistické okupaci odešel přes Polsko do emigrace v SSSR, kde působil jako vysokoškolský učitel jazyků a později získal dvojí docen­ turu. Byl členem Slovanského výboru, jeho verše překládají nejvýznamější básníci, jako na př. Boris Pasternak, M. Cvetajeva aj. V době války mu kde vycházejí čtyří básnické sbírky.

Současně se však vyhroucuje konflikt mezi Lysohorským a Zdeňkem Nejedlým a V. Kopeckým o interpretaci jeho vize lašského národa.

Pro Lysohorského Lašsko nebylo české a s tím získal nepřátelství českých

komunistů v SSSR. Po válce se Lysohorský vrátil do Bratislavy, byl však pro své názory diskriminován, neměl možnost veřejné obhajoby a hrozilo mu dokonce zavlečení do politických procesů. Obtížně hledal .zaměstnéní a teprve v šedesátých letech znovu získal místo na vysoké škole.

Docenturu však obdržel až při od­ chodu do důchodu. V období politického uvolnění mu vychází výbor jeho lašských veršů AJ LAŠSKE ŘÉKY PLYNU DO MOŘA (1958), ve slovenštině BRÁZDOU K VESMÍRU (1960) a v českém překladu JEDÍNÝ POHÁR (1964).

Zatím, co byl doma umlčen a prakticky nemohl publikovat, v zahraničí byla jeho poezie vydávána v nesčetných překladech po celém světě.

Do angličtiny jeho verše přeložil výz­ namný básník W .H. Auden. V roce 1970 byl navržen na Nobelovu cenu.

Dnes patří mezi nejpřekládanější básníky Československa, ale bohužel je tam téměř neznámá osobnost.
