From The Financial Secretary's Office Local Lodge Officers' Workshop At the January Supreme Lodge meeting, the Board finalized the local lodge workshop.

As you are aware, we have held 3 local lodge workshops in the past 3 years; the first coordinated by Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, the second by Vice President Bernie Gebala and the third by President Howard Leshikar. Many favorable comments have been received on these workshops.

At the XXVth Convention held June 1988, in Temple, Texas, the delegates passed that these workshops be held on an annual basis. In carrying out the by - laws of the last convention, the Supreme Lodge has set a date and

time of this year's workshop. The workshop will be held on February 24, 1990 at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone. The time will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a complimentary noon meal to all attending. Please note we must have a correct count of persons attending to enable the caterer to provide ample amount of food for the noon meal.

The format will include the following topics: 1. New Rules Pertaining to IRS Form 990 and 990T 2. Explanation of New Formula Used in Making Lodge Refunds 3. liability Insurance 4. Goals and Objectives of our Society 5. Fraternal Activities - Present and Future 6. Lodge Safety 7. Federal and State Government Issues The presentations will be informal and we look forward that this format will encourage an exchange of ideas between lodges. Lodge 24, Cyclone (located near Temple), has donated use of their lodge hall for this event.

This very informative meeting has been scheduled for Saturday,

February 24, 1990, at 10:00 a.m. The Supreme Lodge has authorized payment of mileage for one car per lodge.

Realizing how this important information can affect our future successes and accomplishments, the Home Office will do everything possible to make this a productive learning experience. Any constuctive

ideas you may nave, please notify me so that we can incorporate them into the program schedule.

TAROK AND DOMINO TOURNAMENTS Dear Members: This is a reminder to all local lodge officers and members that the State Tarok and Domino Tournaments will be held within the next 2 months.

These tournaments are held for all

SPJST members 18 years old and older. You are asked to participate and have an enjoyable day with the other members already participating.

The Tarok Tournament is first and will be held Saturday, March 3, 1990 at SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor beginning at 9:30 a.m. There is no local competition but you must notify your local lodge FAC or president and pay your lodge a $5 entry fee. There is no fee at the State Tournament, but you are required to buy your noon meal which includes snacks of coffee and kolache. If you wish to play and

The Domino Tournaments require a local lodge playoff and the playoffs are being held at your local lodge. Get the date of the playoffs from your local lodge FAC. The 3 top teams from each lodge are permitted to compete at the State Tournaments.

The Straight Tournament will be held Saturday, March 24 at lodge 24, Cyclone and the "42" Tournament will be held Saturday, April 7 at lodge 47, Seaton. The fee is the same as for the Taroks. We invite you to join us on the above dates.

The fraternal activities' reports are being collected by the local FACs so be sure you give them an account of your fraternal activities and volunteer services for the year of 1989 so that they can forward this information to us. We are counting on our members to participate in this report.

District II Officers Plan Spring Activities The District II officers held a meeting on January 29 at Lodge No. 29, Taylor, to discuss the annual spring meeting.

District II President D.I. Bohac called the meeting to order and all officers were present.

Visitors at the meeting were Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Adeline Kohutek.

The meeting was then turned over to DYC Patsy Koslovsky who announced the upcoming YAD at

Round Rock on July 8, and District II Youth Oub trip on August 25th.

District II Vice President Ronnie Rieger suggested that the registration start at 1:00 p.m. and the meeting at 2:00p.m.

Remember this is our business meeting, so there are a list · of important items to be taken care of.

It was decided by the officers that all votes be revealed concerning the election of officers.

It was also proposed that District II hold its meetings on the third Sunday of March and September, but the hosting lodge may change to the second or fourth Sunday if a conflict arises.

District II Vice President Ronnie Rieger stated that we should have door prizes at the meeting. The district will donate $100 to be divided among the adults and children.

District II officers decided that there will be only one member from a lodge allowed to hold office, that includes president, first vice president, second vice president, secretary, and treasurer; excluding the youth counselor and youth counselor assistant.

Anyone interesting in running for an office should contact the Nominating Committee, namely, Albin Machu at (512) 352 - 5489, Ervin Kovar (512) 285 - 2461 or lad Zátopek (817) 778 - 3067.

The district will charge $2.50 per person for the evening meal; Lodge No. 29 will decide the menu and everyone is asked to bring a salad and dessert.

Results Of The Lodge No 47, Seaton "Star Hall" Mid-Winter Tarok Tournament Lodge 47, Seaton "Star Hall" was the site of a Mid - Winter Tarok Tournament that boasted 76 players from all over the state. The event occurred on January 13, 1990 with good weather accompanying players from as far away as Midland.

The first round began at 9:30 a.m. and seven rounds later, the final top four players completed the event a little after 8:00 p.m.

This tournament was unique in that non - SPJST members were invited to play. This was the second such tournament, with the first one being hosted by Lodge No. 29, Taylor in September.

After the first round of play, tournament directors announced that 23 prizes were to be awarded. District II Director Willie E. Kohutek, donated a set of dominoes from the Supreme Lodge and a deck of Tarok cards from himself bringing the total of prizes awarded to 25.

Prizes were given to the youngest and oldest players, L to R: Mark Steger [Lodge 29, Taylor] and Joe Coufal [Lodge 47, Seaton].

In addition to the minimum of four rounds played by each entrant, the lodge served a meal to all contestants which included turkey and dressing.

The players were treated to kolache and sweets donated by Lodge 47 members.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported that there were 32 members, 3 adults and 6 visitors and two new members attending the meeting. On February 16 will be a chili supper, cake walk, country store, auction and drawing; do come out and help the youth club in this worthwhile project.

Members are asked to bring cakes and items for the different booths.

There will be a work day on February 17th. We will be needing everyone's help with a few projects that are in need of repairing. If anyone would like to come out and lend us a .hand, it will all be very appreciated.

Lodge No. 88 Houston News On January 20, 1990 Eddie Skeets, a close friend to many, brought his fine orchestra to Houston from Souix City, Iowa and gave us a beautiful night of dancing. Many of us look forward to this time in January every year. Thank you, Eddie, for this treat and hope you'll be back next year.

Broz Frankie, as we always called him, had been active in the SPJST Lodge 88 for many years, espcially while his children Kenny and Karen were active in the youth club. In 1989 members of Lodge 88, again, spent many hours doing volunteer work to help our community, to help one another, and to keep our lodge running smoothly and being ,a nice place for everyone.

Some of the volunteers work on a regular basis, week - after - week, in hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the elderly, churches, for AARP and other senior citizens' groups, for Harris County Center for the Retarded, for Meals - on - Wheels, for food pantries, and providing care and transportation for patients and the elderly.

Dear Members: It's hard to believe that January 1990is p.i~tand a new month begins.

After the coldest weather in history, we had a mild January in Metro - plex.

On January 21, about 70 SPJST members flew to I.as Vegas for 4 nights and 3 days. We stayed at the Stardust Hotel and attended a show named "Lldo De Paris" on Wednesday night. The rest of the time, everyone was on their own time sightseeing, going on tours, looking at the other hotels, or playing the machines if they wished. Although most of the hotels were in a building

program, there were some beautiful hotels and casinos.

This was Gracie's first time to go to I.as Vegas; she and some other persons are ready to go back and try it again. We met Rosalee and nm Kostom of Lodge 88, Houston; Lydia and Roy Alholm of Lodge 92, Fort Worth; some nice people from Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada and also some nice people from Wisconsin.

They came South to get out of the cold weather, like 20 degrees below zero in Wisconsin to 40 degrees below zero in Canada.

Gracie and I are enjoying retirement. Retirement is when you no longer can leave your worries at the office, and you have to take your coffee breaks on your time.

With all the talk and news about our health, people are reading labels on the items they buy to eat, finding out that they are washing dishes, polishing furniture and washing windows with real lemon juice and drinking lemonade made of water, coloring and artificial flavoring.

By the time this letter goes·to press, the second monthly meeting of 1990 and the next dance will be history, but perhaps some of you wish to attend the next dance at Lodge 183 on Saturday, February 17 or the Family Night on the last Friday, February 23rd.

There will also be an annual local lodge officers' seminar or workshop on Saturday, February 24 at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone. These workshops are always very informative for officers and interested members who wish to learn more about SPJST, what the other lodges are doing, what can be done at the local lodge level for the members and the community. This is fraternalism at its very best!

Sometimes you hear people say that they are too old and cannot do things for the lodge. I would like to tell you some information a woman told me about how to tell when you're getting old, she said there were 3 ways to tell if you are getting old. Number One -- you lose your memory and --­ umm --- well, I have already forgotten the other two!

I just heard on the news that the ground hog in Pennsylvania has predicted an early spring because he didn't see his shadow, but I don't think the ground hog knows very much about the weather in· Texas, because the sun came up bright and clear this morning on February 2, 1990 and has been shining all day. Don't put away your coats yet because you may need them tomorrow.

Spring is always a beautiful time of the year, a new beginning, a new start, beautiful trees and flowers with birds chirping in the trees; things that make you feel better and give you the feeling that everything will be better in the future, also knowing that we just left behind · some of the coldest weather in the history of Texas.

Let's all of us (SPJST members) look for something that you can do to make this a better year, a better world for all to see.

In every organization there are three groups of people, the optimist, the pessimist and the realist. For example a group of people at a lake have a sailboat; the optimist says we are going to sail across the lake, the pessimist says you cannot do that, the wind is in the wrong direction and there is a sandbar on the right and there are tree stumps on the left; you cannot cross the lake and the realist uses the drive and encouragement of the optimist, listens to the pessimist, then readjusts the sails and sails in a

This same system works in every club or lodge, there needs to be some realist in every organization to use the spirit of the optimist, not be too critical of the pessimist, but listen to them and put the two together to create something great and something that our grandchildren will remember and talk about when we are gone.

I am sure that our founders in the 1890s had some people tell them that they couldn't do the things that they said they could do, but they did it, anyway. This is how America has become the great nation it is today.

Using the thoughts of our late President John F. Kennedy; it isn't what your lodge, community, city, state or country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your lodge, community, city, state or country that will keep this nation strong, and keep this government of the people, by the people, and for the people to last forever.

Sometimes the future looks hopeless but, with a little advice, encouragement, and moral support, things work out and leave us with a better outlook on life. .

Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels Our first meeting of 1990 was held at the Bavarian Village on January 18 at 8 p.m.

President Dwight Doeppenschmidt called the meeting to order and youth club member Derek Koehler led our group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of the October meeting and December meeting were approved as read.

Treasurer Ernest Jasek gave a very favorable report.

Correspondence read was a letter from the Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary stating the factors used to compute the amount of revenue received for 1989. We were happy to see the increase over last year's report. This tells us our sales representatives are busy people and we need to help them when possible.

We were happy to see Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Muehlstein present for this

meeting. Mr. Muehlstein is a charter member of our Lodge 185.

Susan Bohnenberger and her daughter, Whitney Rhea, were the new members accepted by our lodge.

We are happy to have them join our group.

Youth Leader Theresa Haag reported that 13 youth and 5 adults were present for the meeting held earlier that evening. We are proud of our youth and their leader as well as the parents who assist the leader.

They sang Christmas carols for several occasions in December, including an open house at the Bavarian Village in November. Chris Haag and April Haag plan to go to UT this year.

Dates for our 1990 meetings were discussed as well as the District VII spring meeting. lodge 185 will host District VII spring meeting Sunday, March 25, 1990 at the Bavarian Village where they have a full dining restaurant, which offers a wide variety of food from sandwiches to authentic German dinners. A special feature on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is their Sunday Buffet which features homecooked American food that consists of two entries, vegetable, soup and salad bar, tea or coffee and dessert. Come early and enjoy good food and atmosphere.

For those coming from out - of town if you plan to spend the night, Bavarian Village offers polka dancing Saturday evening with music by The Litt 'l Fishermen.

Don't forget the District VII spring meeting on Sunday, March 25, 1990 at the Bavarian Village.

Lodge 196 held its first quarterly meeting of 1990 on Sunday, February 4 at 2 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Kathy.

President Zdenek Nedbalek called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. ' Secretary Brenda Pike read the minutes of the December meeting and they were approved as read.

Evelyn Mikeska gave her treasurer's report, which was approved.

Several new memberes were named and accepted.

Discussion was held concerning a more central place for meetings, and Brenda Pike was appointed to check on several suggested places.

An announcement was made that, in the near future, a Czechoslovak minister, namely, Rev. Jirka Carada, and his wife, Marie, will be visiting and hold services in Czech, English and German in 26 Brethren churches in Texas. Watch for notices of his arrival in your area.

Following adjournment, refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed by those present.

Our next meeting will be on April 22 at 3 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Katy.; all Lodge 196 members, come on out and get involved! We miss you, and you may find out what you have been missing. We also miss our former reporter, Edna Voldan, but wish her success and happiness in her new home.

Classes Scheduled At Lodge No. 88, Houston Czech

The schedule of Czech studies at Lodge 88, Houston has been increased to a term of 12 weeks. The usual meeting time is 7:30 pail. to 9:30 p.m. every Monday evening with the exception of Lodge 88 monthly meeting nights. The first period of study is planned for February 19th.

Court Decision Takes Away Employees' Benefits

Supreme

Beware of the recent Supreme Court decision in the Ohio vs Betts decision.

Since 1967 the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) has protected most workers over the age of 40 from employment discrimination.

Until this year, employers could not arbitrarily reduce or deny older workers the same benefits offered to younger workers. Most employers complied with the law.

In a recent case, however, the Supreme Court reinterpreted the

ADEA to say that the law does not, REPEAT DOES NOT, protect older workers from discrimination in employees (OHIO vs BETTS).

As a result of this decision, now for the first time in 20 years, employers can legally refuse to provide any benefits to older workers, and can take away the benefits older workers already have.

Almost every benefit is at risk.

Older workers can lose health, life and disability insurance, vacation pay, sick leave, and severance pay, and possible other benefits. The only benefit still protected is pensions.

If you are not already a retiree, you should become very alarmed about this decision since it could become hazardous to your future life when all worries about retirement and a happy retirement should be your least of worries.

I know that you can still remember how the American public became so enraged over the "Medicare Catastrophic Health Insurance Surtax" that the voice of the people did prevail and the law was changed.

That's so wonderful about our country where Vox populi, if heard loud enough, will eventually reach the ears of our governing body.

There's no other country in the world where so much freedom is exercised without restraint.

I am sure that by now that you are asking what you can do about the possibility of your retirement rights being taken away from you when you decide to throw in the towel.

Well, then get busy and exercise Vox populi.

Bills have been introduced in the Senate (S. 1511) and the House (H.R. 3200) that would restore older workers' rights to fair employee benefits. These bills, both called "THE OLDER WORKERS' BENEFIT PROIECI1ON ACT," make clear that employees must treat older workers equally when it comes to employee benefits.

Without this legislation, almost every benefit is at risk: Older workers can lose health, life and disability insurance, vacation pay, sick leave, severance pay, etc. The only benefit still protected is pensions.

Employer groups are fighting these two bills that have been introduced in the Congress, claiming that they should be able to design their benefit plans however, they wish -- even if that means older workers get fewer or none of the benefits offered to younger workers.

Older workers should let Congress know that they, too, are entitled to equal employees' benefits and that no business of any kind should be allowed to discriminate against older employees.

As we all know the wheels of Congress grind very slowly unless it is pushed very vigorously by its constituents to take immediate action (as in the case of the "Medicare Catastrophic Health Insurance Surtax").

Unless Congress hears from you it may not act to restore older workers' rights to fair benefits.

Let us not be passive in this most serious matter of protecting our rights.

Contact your Senators and Representatives and let them know how you feel about this injustice and refer to the two bills referenced herein that would restore older workers' benefits.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith, from Wallis, comes to have Bible study with the residents. In the afternoon, Lorene Novosad, Lydia Hortman, Ida Gasch, Annie Stavinoha and Ida Sliva came to play social games with the residents.

The Damon ladies, Catholic ladies, Presbyterian ladies and Immanuel ladies came on Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortman and Freda Klawitter came to roll hair.

Monday afternoon, Janury 8, the Hope Lutheran Church women and Rev. Jenson, from Beasley, came to hold services and brought cookies for a social afterwards.

Tuesday afternoons, January 9 and 23, Elton Tielke came to play his accordian and sang old - time songs with the residents.

Thursday morning, January 18, Patty and Peggy came to sing to the

The birthday party was held Friday, January 26, which included singing "Happy Birthday" and playing polka music on tape. The Unique Shop provided corsages and a boutonniere, the Hope Lutheran Church women, from Beasley, provided cakes.

Volunteers -- Ida Gasch, Melva Hastings and Lydia Hortman helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of January.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches and to the volunteers who performed services in the home for these residents.

Seaton Senior Citizens' Group Assists SPJST Youth.With Quilt Blocks Dear Readers: The 1989 Youth Achievement Day Special Category was "Pieced Fabric Blocks.'' Over 50 youth entered their squares in the state competition. After competition was completed, it was decided to join the blocks together to make an SPJST youth quilt which would hang in the SPJST museum, so that generations to come could view the handiwork of our youth.

I was set with the task of embroidering over 50 names on the

block pieces when the Seaton senior citizens' group came to my rescue.

The ladies pictured, in the spirit of fraternalism, volunteered to do the embroidery work on the squares.

My special thanks to the ladies for taking time out toassist the youth of our SPJST and help put us a step closer in having the quilt hang in the SPJST museum.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton Lodge 30 SPJST Youth Club met Sunday, January 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

Stephanie Roye presided over the meeting. Crystal Roye led the pledge and Sara Diuhos said the prayer.

Thirteen members and guests, Mary Mrnustik and Joyce Kahanek, were present.

Lenice Kaspar read the secretary's minutes and treasurer's report. Craig Dornak gave the dues' report.

A thank you card, from Garden Villa Nursing Home, was read. They thanked the club for table decorations and caroling during Christmastime.

Poems concerning Wintertime were read. Valentine projects for February were discussed.

Winners in the "Make a Snowman" contest in ages 5 - 7 were: Crystal Roye -- first, Jason Kaspar -- second and Rachel Dluhos -- third.

In ages 8 - 11 winners were: Valerie Roye -- first, Bradley Krpec -- second and Sara Dluhos -- third.

Features Klub Kontinental Victory Tour Klub Kontinental of East Bernard, Rudy and Henrietta Klecka, will present their annual film presentation and social on Sunday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. in Holy Cross CCD building discussing 1990 June and September European tours. THE PUBLIC IS INVITED. Highlight of the June tour is attending the world's longest running plays the "Oberammergau Passion Play" situated in the Bavarian Alps of West Germany held every 10 years, staging the life, death and resurrection of Christ. The Drama is presented from May 21 to September 29, 1990. The amateur Passion Play dates back to 1633, when Oberammergau was hit by the dreaded plaque. If spared the inhabitants took an oath they would stage a play once every decade. Since this time, the play has been on going except during World War II. The 1984 play was a special staged on the 350 anniversary which Klub Kontinental attended. The all - day play is performed in an open air theater accommodating 4,700 seats. It is an all - day affair with a morning and afternoon performance, with a break of 3 hours for lunch. Over 1,500 Oberammergau take part in the play and money derived from this play is spent on city projects. Every seat has a good view of the stage and performances go on rain or shine, with the auditorium seats under cover and the stage exposed against the snow capped mountains.

For the two overnights spent in Oberammergau, Klub Kontinental members will be housed in private homes with an Oberammergau family.

Oberammergau is a picturesque village with its fresco - painted houses and stores, broad-roofed chalets and its woodcarvings. The tour will continue to Vienna for a stopover and then continue to Prague, Czechoslovalda, with England, Holland and Switzerland included in the 23 - day tour. Space is available at this writing.

František Obliza z Ennis, Texas zajel do staré vlasti vyhledat svoje rodné kořeny. Byl na to hrdý, že to vše sám vyhledá. Ptal se starého policajta ve vesnici, odkud vystěhovali se jeho prarodiče. "Chtěl bych vědět, kolik mám vlastně příbuzných."

Naše schůze byla zahájena předsedou George Pavelkou ve 2 hodiny v neděli 4. února.

Povstáním jsme vzdali čest naší vla­ jce; nosiči vlajek byli Erin Škrabánek a James Kortis. Po silbu věrnosti vlajce jsme měli tichou vzpomínkupro bratra Jana Kubána.

Tajemnice Delores Škrabánek přečetla protokol z minulé schůzea byl přijat tak, jak byl napsán.

Byly dopisy od Hlavní úřadovny se žádostí, kdo by si přál hostit "State Royalty" a karta od Doris Kubánové.

Přijali jsme členku Marthu Pallovu.

Zprávy úředníků byly dobré.

Sestra Judy Pechalová podala zprávu za dozorčí výbor a FAC Tim Reese oznámil, že naši "Fraternal Ac­ tivities" rodinný večirek bude 16. února a domino a "42" hry bude 3. března u řádu číslo 29 v Taylor.

Patsy Koslovský podala dobrou zprávu; měla 32 členů, 3 návštěvníky a dva nové členy, Sarah Zavodný a Lan­ don Zavodný.

Na lístku nemocných jsou Jerry Kotrla, Ella Chupík, Georgie Sodek, Olga Mikeska, Edwin Jež, Dorothy Arnold, Claude Wells, Louis Tepera a Theresa Chlápek.

Narozeniny budou slavit v únoru Gene Hejl, Vallie Tupy, Gene Škrabánek, E.J. Pechal, Lonnie Schroeder, Helen Janáček, Annie Chupík, Dana Glaser a Wallace Jež.

Výročí sňatku budou slavit Frank a Ruth Janáček. Členů ve schůzi bylo 96 a návštěv­ nice byly Libbie Bartek od řádu číslo 177, Academy a Mary Greger, Tracy Bedrich a Ann Balusek.

Potom schůze ukončila a měli jsme svačinku.

Než jsem se vydala krajanskou stopou do Ameriky, četla jsem si ve vzpomínkách českého bás­ níka, spisovatele a překladatele Josefa Václava Sládka (1845-1912) o jeho putování, setkáních a dojmech z této vel­ ké země. české a slovenské při­ stěhovalce popisoval jako skupi-

14. února 1990 nu lidí, která tu těžce pracuje, bojuje o holou existenci a nako­ nec splyne s ostatními, odnárod­ ní se. Prorokoval, že za sto let tu bude po češtině veta. Odhad je odhad, skutečnost však zůstává skutečností.

Sto let je pryč a čeština a 'slo­ venština, jak jsem se přesvědči­ la, žije ve státě Illinois, Texasu, New Yorku, Pensylvánii, Connec­ ticutu i na Floridě. A to jsem projela, ač se na mém cestov­ ním tachometru nastřádaly tisí­ ce kilometrů, jen zlomek krajan­ ských středisek. Setkala jsem se s vnuky a pravnuky tehdejších přistěhovalců, kteří se mnohdy naučili hovořit našimi národními jazyky od babiček nebo rodičů a ve školách či kursech se v nich dále zdokonalují jako v cizí řeči.

Navíc se zajímají o historii Če­ chů a Slováků. Proto také kromě tradičních krajanských spolků zakládají nové spolky. Nazývají je české dědictví.

Texas vede Přijedete-li do Texasu (nazýva­ ném zemí osamělé hvězdy, pro­ tože jej symbolizuje ve státní vlajce bílá osamocená hvězda), padne na vás nemilosrdné hor­ ko. 94 stupňů Fahrenheita je pro domorodce běžná teplota, ale já jsem nevěděla, kam před tím ve­ drem utéct. Ale i na horko jsem zapomněla zásluhou těch, které jsem znala z Prahy jako studen­ ty kursu češtiny na Karlově uni­ verzitě. Vědomostí nabytých v tomto kursu stále využívají. česky jsem hovořila v jejich do­ mácnostech, na farmách, ško­ lách, na univerzitě. Neušla mi ani rozhlasová půlhodinka, kte­ rou anglicko-česky vede Rudy Ševčík ve městě West. Studenti češtiny pokračují ve studiu i ta­ dy, v Texasu. A navíc se scházejí na malých oslavách, zpívají čes­ ké písničky a pokud dojde dech, zalistují ve zpěvníku. Repertoár firn vydrží dlouho. Na jedné ta­ kové oslavě u krajanky Clarice O'Haíre v Hustonu jsem s radostí přijala svou porážku: naučila jsem se tu několik nových mo­ ravských národních písní.

Za poznáním tajů texaské če­ štiny, vlastně moravštiny, jsem jela do městečka Caldwellu, na jehož konci má farmu profesor Josef Skřivánek. Se zemřelým bratrem Janem, též profesorem češtiny, byli dvojčata. ,,Ale Jan, který založil hnutí za udržení českého jazyka v Texasu, byl opravdu nejen profesorem češti­ ny, ale i jejím zastáncem duší i srdcem," vzpomínal Josef, když mne vozil po farmě. Na hlavě měl široký kovbojský klobouk, na nohou téměř ke kolenům sa­ hající vysoké boty, zdobené kov­ bojskými ornamenty a cvočky. ,,Mne profesura neživila. Chleba nám dávala a dává farma," usmíval se. Kolem nás se popá­ sala stáda krav. A pak ukázal da­ leko do kraje a vyjmenoval, že tu mají farmy Štětkovi, Šefčíkovi, Chloupkovi, Muchovi, Kubínovi,

Duškovi a další. Jako na Moravě, odkud přišli Skřivánkovi. Pochá­ zeli ze Želechovic a sem dorazili v roce 1855. Josef Skřivánek ne­ říká naše farma, ale náš statek, aby prý mluvil česky. Opravuje ty, kteří hovoří moravštinou o krchově nebo o špitálu. Sám často opakuje slova ,,šikovně", ,,hrozný" a ,,kolomazník". Asi se mu líbí.

Skřivánkovi byli odjakživa pro šíření vzdělanosti. Otec obou Skřivánků dbal na to, aby vystu­ dovali vysokou školu, ač sám byl farmář, prostý člověk. Zemřelý Jan Skřivánek dokonce vystudo­ val na pražské Karlově univerzi­ tě, vypracoval skripta pro výuku českého jazyka v Texasu a polo­ žil základy nadace pro udržení českého jazyka v jejich americ­ kém domově. ,,Poslední, perma­ nentní nadace, na níž teď pracu­ jeme," vykládá s hrdostí Josef Skřivánek, ,,už má na kontě 200 000 dolarů. Některý krajan dal třeba pět dolarů, druhý 1 O 000 dolarů a peněz přibýva­ lo." Až budou mít 500 000 dola­ rů - a snaží se, aby to bylo br­ zy - dostanou od státu dotaci půl miliónu dolarů a čeština se bude vyučovat na některé texas­ ké univerzitě.

Na nejstarší americké univer­ zitě AM Univerzity ve městě Col­ lege Station u města Bryan učí i profesoři českého původu. Je­ den z nich, dr. Lorenz Brabenec, má v úmyslu přijet do Českoslo­ venska a žít alespoň měsíc v ne­ známé pražské rodině, kde by musil hovořit jen česky. Chce si prý ,,obrousit jazyk na češtinu".

A bude to jeho první návštěva naší země.

Po budově univerzity, kde je vše zařízeno pro výuku i volný čas studentů, mne provázel bý­ valý zdejší profesor sociologie Josef Škrabánek a mladý profe­ sor Clinton Machan, který studo­ val v Praze. česky i anglicky se dohadovali o tom, jak charakte­ rizovat bitvu na Bílé Hoře, osob­ nost J. A. Komenského, jak to by­ lo kdysi se Švédy na Karlově mo­ stě a o mnoha dalších epizodách z naší historie.

Sobotní vyučování Kdybych očekávala, že za kra­ jany půjdu do chicagských mra­ kodrapů, byla bych zklamána.

V nedalekém městě Berwynu, v ulicích s nízkými domky a za­ hrádkami, většinou neoplocený­ mi, bydlí mnoho krajanských rodin. A proto je také berwynská sokolovna většinu večerů obsa­ zena. Ochotníci z různých spol­ ků tu na jevišti nacvičují své di­ vadelní hry, sál sokolovny sou­ časně slouží jako tělocvična místním sokolům. Klubovna se každou sobotu díky Sdružení Svobodomyslných škol promění ve školní třídu. V čele nevelké místnosti je tabule, žáci a žáčci sedí za stoly. O výzdobu se stará učitelka Marie Knězová, povolá­ ním úřednice. Používá k tomu

barevné obrázky z českých časo­ pisů. Děti jí obvykle pomáhají.

Byla jsem přítomna jednomu so­ botnímu vyučování. Po čtení a psaní se nacvičovaly básničky a tanečky ke Dni matek a otců.

Naslouchala jsem sborové recita­ ci: Mámo, moje mámo / nikde na světě/ tolik lásky nekvete.

Pak se zpívaly písničky Pásla ovečky, Tluče bubeníček, Pod dubem. Potom .dětí zazpívaly nejprve naší a pak americkou státní hymnu. Po zpěvu přišla hra. Nejmladší Vašek stál u ta­ bule a Kára, Michala, Jenufa, Kri­ sta i ti nejstarší David a Sylvie sestavovali z písmenek česká slova: ,,Lampa", ,,Život", ,,Vče­ la", ,,Kytička", ,,Sobota". ,,Učíte podle návodů Jana Amose Komenského, hrou.

Osvědčuje se vám to?" Marie Knězová mi pohotově odpovědě· la: ,,Ano, týdně se žáci naučí pět až šest českých slov."

Gajduškovi, Šrachtovi, Matiáš­ kovi, Divišovi, Fialovi, Peškovi a další posílají své děti do této ,,nedělní školy" (nazývají ji tak, i když je v sobotu). Více než 20 žáků se tu učí jazyku svých předků. A do této školy chodí i dospělí, kteří se většinou při­ pravují na cestu do Českosloven­ ska.

Jak se baví O zábavu a kulturní vyžití ne­ mají krajané nouzi. V Berwynu mne pozvali na divadelní před­ stavení Dramatického odboru Československých spolků americ­ kých státu Illinois. Nastudovali roztomilou operetku Firma Vo­ ves a Koníček. Zašla jsem i na zkoušku souboru, kde jsem se seznámila s tvůrčím hereckým a režisérským přístupem zkuše­ né Ludmily Čejkové, které po­ máhal její syn. Hvězdou předsta­ vení byl herec, konferenciér, zpěvák a rozhlasový pracovník Joe Lacina. V této frašce se zpě­ vy se potvrdilo nejen jeho herec­ ké, ale i pěvecké umění. Několik stovek lidí tleskalo při každém jeho vstupu na jeviště. Ale i kra­ jan Rudy Liška, jinak předseda Moravských spolků v Berwynu, se líbil, stejně jako Jaroslav Ci­ mer, Cyril Příkazký a další.

Všichni herci jsou zároveň i obě­ tavými pomocníky při shánění všech pomůcek a rekvizit, které každé divadlo potřebuje. A za dobrými hereckými výkony při­ jíždějí i hosté z New Yorku, ze sousedních států Wisconsinu a Michiganu. A ještě něco pro krajanskou Ameriku typické: po kulturním prožitku nabízí impro­ vizovaný bufet pestré občerstve­ ní a pro správné zakončení se musí nejméně do půlnoci tančit.

K tanci a poslechu tu hrála hud­ ba krajana Vladimíra Jiráka.

Na programu jiného předsta­ vení, lidové hry s tanci a zpěvy Tulácká krev, kterou ve stejné sokolovně před měsícem předvá­ děl Klub Bedřich Smetana jako své výroční divadlo, mne zaujala tato slova: ,,Naše vřelé díky

Docela jiná zábava Ve městě Rosenberg v Texasu se v době mého pobytu konala česká slavnost. V několika ha­ lách se tancovalo, koncertovalo, zpívalo, jedlo, pilo, prodávalo, nakupovalo. V jedné z hal, která se jmenovala Praha, koncertoval Studentský orchestr z Medvílle, dále Chór a orchestr Slovanské 'podpůrné jednoty státu Texas, zpívali Čeští zpěváci z Galvesto­ nu, tančili Čeští folkoví tanečníci z města West a další. Seděly tu celé rodiny s dětmi, dvojice i jednotlivci. Oblečení bylo velmi pestré: kovbojské, sportovní, ná­ rodní kroje. Prožitky se zapíjely pivem, coca-colou a zajídaly se bramborovými plackami a pala­ činkami. Opékaly se tu uzenky., vařila kukuřice. Prostě velká pout'.

Moji společníci, manželé Hey­ dovi, mne provedli i další halou.

Jmenovala se Plzeň. Ta byla pro­ dejní. Majitel cestovní kanceláře R. Klečka informoval zájemce o zájezdech do Československa, prodávala se tu trička a kulaté odznaky s česko-anglickými ná­ pisy jako např. Čechoslováci z Texasu, Líbej mne, já jsem Čech, Moje kořeny jsou v Česko­ slovensku. Jeden podnikavec tu dokonce za mírný poplatek na­ stříkal zájemcům barevným sprejem ozdoby na obličej i ša­ ty. Prostě proti gustu žádný di­ šputát, jak se u nás říká. Ve stáncích se nabízely různé upo­ mínkové předměty, české knihy, kuchařky, vyšívané blůzky, pol­ štářky s rádobyčeskými a rnorav­ skými ornamenty, z mušlí slepo­ vaná zvířátka. Kolem hal, mezi houpačkami a zábavními atrak­ cemi, korzovali návštěvníci zda­ leka i zblízka. Vše přehlušovala hudba z ampliónů a klaksony aut ze sousedního parkoviště.

Vrátili jsme se znovu do haly Praha. Konferenciér Stavinoha mne pozval k pódiu, přivítal mne, zdůraznil, že přicházím přímo z Prahy. A pak už za mnou až do mého odchodu cho­ dili nejrůznější česky, anglicky i moravskoanglicky mluvící Te­ xasané, vyptávali se na města, vesnice, obce v Československu a žádali mne, abych tam po­ zdravovala známé, příbuzné ne-

bo ty, jejichž jména slyšeli od svých rodičů nebo prarodičů.

Vzkazů bylo hodně a některé se mi nepodařilo vyřídit. Neexisto­ vala ani místa určení, ani adre­ sáti.

Na koncert Veselky Do haly odborů v Jullietově ulici v Berwynu zvala Moravská kulturní společnost milovníky dobré dechové hudby na kon­ cert Veselky, dechovky z jižních Čech. V rozlehlé síni usedly stovky posluchačů. Píseň Nad Lužnicí svítá byla počáteční znělkou kapely a následující pís­ ně Krásná pasačka, Kolíne, Kolí­ ne, Od Tábora až k nám a další zpíval celý sál. Konferenciéra Mi­ lana Černohouze, zpěvačky i ce­ lou kapelu obklopilo o přestávce tolik krajanů, že stěží mohli od­ povědět na všechny dotazy.

Když skončil koncert, vyprovodi­ lo obecenstvo Jihočechy až k au­ tobusu a někteří si poznamenali i místa jejich dalších vystoupení.

Uprostřed jarní noci si neříkali sbohem, ale nashledanou. Chtěli slyšet jejich hudbu alespoň ještě na jednom koncertě. A někteří i na dvou.

Dvě ze dvou států Domov obou sousedí s nedo­ zírnou vodní hladinou. Obě zů­ staly osamoceny, a přesto ne­ jsou samy. Obě mají stejný ži­ votní cíl: vykonat vše pro přátelství mezi lidmi, mezi národy, pro život v míru.

Do města železářského prů­ myslu New Havenu ve státě Connecticut jsem se dostala vla­ kem z New Yorku za dvě .hodi­ ny. Na zdejší univerzitě léta přednášel profesor John Maršal­ ka, syn horníka z Dolní Suče, . který odejel za moře shánět prá­ ci. John, který se narodil v Ame­ rice, zemřel náhle v roce 1983 v Praze, v kruhu své rodiny. Při­ jel tenkrát, jako jeden ze zakla­ datelů Světové rady míru, na Světové shromáždění za mír a život, proti jaderné válce. Na nádraží v New Haven mne sky­ tičkou na uvítanou čekala jeho manželka Milada. Křehká, vždy elegantní, střízlivě oblečená, usměvavá, příjemná. Z rodné Moravy odešla před 55 lety a našla životního partnera na celý šrastný život. Stejně jako on pracovala a pracuje v míro­ vém a ženském hnutí, píše refe­ ráty, jezdí na schůze po celých Spojených státech amerických i do Evropy.

Nejdříve mne provedla svým domem u moře. Tabulka na

vstupních dveřích připomíná návštěvu Hortensie Allendové, vdovy po Salvadoru Allendovi, prezidentovi Chille. Na malé plá­ ži je stůl se židlemi. Tady sedá­ vala paní Maršalková se svým Ja­ nem, tady se stále ještě odbývají schůze, je-Ji pěkné počasí. Jinak zasedají v prostorné místnosti u velkého stolu. Kromě obrazů a drobných památek jsou všude zápisy, záznamy, knihy, lexiko­ ny, pozvánky na schůze a shro­ máždění. Prostě úřadovna.

V tomto domě u moře, kde žila spokojená manželská dvojice, se jednalo a jedná o mírových ak­ cích, sdělují se přátelům dojmy z Československa, pořádají se večírky pro zasloužilé pracovní­ ky mírového hnutí. ,,Poslední akcí byla pomoc naší ženské or­ ganizace Nikaragui. Shromáždily jsme šicí stroje, školní potřeby, věci k šití jako nitě, patentky, ale i pera, tužky, gumy. Patnáct tun vážila naše zásilka," vyprá­ věla mi Milada Maršalková. Lou­ čily jsme se zase na nádraží. Mi­ lada trochu posmutněla. ,,Po­ zdravujte v Praze. Víte, že já ta­ ky někdy smutním po domově?

Pak zvednu telefon a volám sy­ novcovi. Co se stalo, ptá se. Nic, chci slyšet české slovo, odpovím mu. A je mi líp."

Druhá krajanka, která má mnoho společného s Miladou Maršalkovou, ač se osobně ne­ znají, bydlí ve státě New Jersey. Říká se mu ,,zahradní stát". Dne­ šek sice názvu plně neodpovídá, ale u jezera, kde žije malířka Al­ vena Sečkárová, tato charakteris­ tika souhlasí.

Ve starém domě, který zdědi­ la po mamince. dovoluje velké přízemní okno této umělkyni, upoutané na invalidní vozík, sle­ dovat mnoho nenapodobitelně barevných a krásných tváří pří­ rody. Alvenu Sečkárovou potkalo velké životní trápení. Je ochrnu­ tá na půl těla. Slovenka Marta jí chodí vařit, ohřívat jídlo, ošetřu­ je ji, ukládá ji na lůžko. A přesto si malířka určila· přísný denní re­ žim. Vstává kolem sedmé hodi­ ny. Pak po snídani čte noviny, časopisy, studuje. Inspiruje ji neustále se měnící hladina jeze­ ra, stromy, obloha. Má je stále před očima, žije s nimi. Navečer usedá Alvena ke svým plátnům. často vzpomíná na Slovensko, odkud přišel její otec za prací do Ameriky. Vzpomínky jsou auten­ tické - léčila se ve světozná­ mých Piešťanech. ,,Ráda bych zase přijela, ale co se dá dělat s půlkou těla," prohodí se smut­ ným úsměvem.

Připomínám jí její obraz, který visí na městském národním vý­ boru v Lidicích. Zaujal ji osud obyvatel, a· proto ztvárnila spo­ lečný hrob lidických mužů za­ střelených nacisty. ,,Ano, vzpo­ mínám. V Lidicích jsem plakala a otřáslo mnou to, co prožily že­ ny, děti, muži. Tenkrát jsem ješ-

tě byla zdravá, mladá. Ale i po tolika letech mi zůstalo moje smýšlení: většinou nemaluji poe­ tické obrazy, ale aktuální, poli­ tické. Říkám jimi své slovo proti válce, pro mír."
