On January 7th, the first monthly meeting of the new decade convened at 2 p.m. and lasted about thirty minutes. A light quorum was present so many items had to be left until the next meeting.

The fellowship hour with luncheon was short but enjoyed by all who stayed. All items served at the luncheon were donated. Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner along with Sisters Sophia Kasmir and Helen Kelner furnished most of the items. Sister Nezval was home sick but sent some

items, also.

On another subject, at this point in time, a tentative date has been set for the first bi - annual meeting of 1990 for the Czech National Cemetery Association of East Bernard. It will be held on the second Sunday, March llth. A conformation of this date will be announced in February.

There were 19 members and 3 visitors present at the January 21, 1990 meeting.

President Ricky Ford called the meeting to order at 2 p.m., followed by the pledge to the flag by all present.

Roll call revealed 10 trustees were present and 3 absent.

The secretary, financial secretary and treasurer all gave their reports and all were accepted as read.

We were privileged to have Megaera Nestor from Houston at our meeting. She spoke to us about Dime Box sponsoring the "Dime Box Time Box Chautaugua."

After some discussion among the members, it was decided to have another meeting within two weeks and ask everyone in the community who may be interested to come and listen to plans and suggestions from Ms. Nestor.

This is a large project to undertake and will need good and dependable leadership and workers.

Lodge No. 13 has gone to "Direct Billing" as of December 1, 1989, therefore. no financial secretary was elected for 1990.

The funds remaining in the mortuary account will be transferred to the regular Lodge No. 13 account.

With no further business the meeting adjourned.

News From Lodge No. 32, Victoria Lodge 32 met for the first time in 1990 on January 10th. President Mike Ahlstrom called the meeting to order, led the Pledge of Allegiance and held a moment of silence for our departed members.

Our officers for 1990 are as follows: President -- Michael Ahlstrom Vice President -- Wayne Spiller Secretary - Reporter -- Kathy Ahlstrom Treasurer -- Ella Arnold Youth Leader -- Frances Motal Trustees are -- Edward Malik (No. 1), Franklin Elles (No. 2), and Theo Kocian (No. 3).

We extend thanks and appreciation to John Motal and Adolf Motal who served as president and vice president, respectively, during 1988 and 1989. Both of you did a fine job; thanks, again.

If you missed the Christmas Party, you really missed out! John and Frances Motal "outdid themselves" with the decorating and putting this party together. A good time was had by all 43 in attendance and I truly believe Lodge 32 has the best cooks around, the food was delicious.

We hope to see you at our next meeting on Wednesday, February 14th at Citizens National Bank at 7:30 p.m.

Ourlodge accepted Alvin A. Merta, Glen Allen Story, Amber Louise Trochta, Benjamin Knebel, Cody Knebel and Keri Knebel as new members.

The members heard a financial report from Treasurer Madeline Shimek for the months of November and December, 1989. A complete report was on file subject to audit.

Trustees reported that all books and records were audited and all in order.

On motion made, the meeting was adjourned. Sheryl Gerberman won the door prize.

Lodge No. 49, Rowena Rowena Lodge No. 49 had their first game social of 1990 on Friday, January 19 and it was a real good evening. We had a very nice crowd and everyone was in a playing mood.

The food everyone brings is always good and such a nice variety; anything from sandwiches, dips, pickles to lovely pies and cakes.

We have a good variety of games that are played, such as 88, 42 and straight dominoes. Card games are "Hand and Foot," played with 6 decks of cards. We also started playing Taroky; some of us need lots of practice . yet, but it is a good game.

Members, don't forget our regular quarterly meeting on Wednesday, February 7 at 7 p.m. Please come, we need you and you may erijoy it. I hope so.

President Mary Alice Langlotz presented a check for $40 from the Supreme Lodge to the Lodge 66 Volleyball Team. They will use it for a party for the players.

Door prize was won by Brother Charles Trickett.

Birthdays for the month of January are Justin Engelke, Frank Kofnovec, Irene Schiemenz and Charlie Mueller.

The birthday cake was brought by Dillion Locke.

Lodge No. 66, Waco Straight Domino Tournament Lodge 66 will hold their Straight Domino Tournament starting at 7 p.m.

Monday night, February 5 and continuing each Monday night in Feburary until completion.

We will play a "Round Robin" Tournament. The losers play the same number of games as the winners. The top three places will go to the State SPJST Tournament on March 24th.

There will be a $5 per person entry fee which will go toward prizes.

Lodge No. 66, Waco January Meeting Another year has begun and the first month of the year is almost gone.

Everyone is preparing for all the upcoming activities including Taroky and Domino Tournaments. Hope all of you have a very successful new year.

Our January meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President Mary Alice langlotz.

Flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Ashley Locke. The Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto were led by Sandra Trickett and Alicia Neslony.

All the officers were present.

Our visitors were Brother Tim and SYD Gaudette Reese and . children and Ollie J. Hall. We valued your visit and make plans to come, again, soon.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved.

Sister Darlene Engelke received a donation from the Ed Screeny family; it will be used to buy a scale for the bar.

Board of Trustees' minutes for December were read by Sister Jeanette Smith and were approved.

The January Board of Trustees' minutes were read by Sister Bonnie

Pruitt and were approved.

The Entertainment Committee report was that members are asked to bring casseroles for our February 18 meeting and the committee will provide desserts and coffee, the lodge will furnish ham.

New members are Angela Goldman, Brian A. Kasik, Ronald James Janek, Dennis M. Janek, Kristin Jordon Woods, David E. Adams and Shannon Rae Spivey. Transferee from Lodge 54 to lodge 66 was Leona Hanzlicek and Jim Weist also transferred to our lodge. Welcome to lodge 66!

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the fraternal activities' report for December. There was a donation of 48 eye - glasses and 88 pounds of canned and unperishable food items.

Brother George Pauling gave the fraternal activities' report for January about the upcoming Domino and Taroky Tournaments. lodge 66 will not hold any tournaments. Those who want to play Taroky will have to sign in.

On February 5 the Domino Tournament for our lodge will begin at 7 p.m., also the Taroky players are asked to come and practice.

District III spring meeting will hold a horseshoe contest and quilt contest. local lodge officers' workshop will also be Saturday, February 24 at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

There will be a book where members can sign in their charitable and fraternal work done at each meeting for records to be sent to Supreme Lodge at the end of the year.

Get well cards were sent to Sharon Tierce, Magdelene Webb, and Charles Trickett. Baby congratulations were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mazanec, Jr. Our youth leader, Gladys Yates, reported that the club donated money to a family of abuse. They will go bowling in February. They will make Valentine hearts for the Moody Nursing Center and they will make Valentine boxes for their February meeting.

SYD Gaudette Reese congratulated Youth Leader Gladys Yates and her assistants for work well done.

Brother Tim Reese reported on the volunteer, charitable and fraternal work that the members do.

Eddie Kunz moved that we donate money to Susan Bohnenberger in order to defray her medical expenses. The motion was seconded by ' D.I. Bohac, motion carried. Members voted to donate $300.

Flag Bearer Ed Reisner led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A silent tribute was paid to deceased members.

Mary Ann Zatopek gave her report and the following new members were accepted into our lodge: Kathy Regina Whitis, Megan Elise Stauffer, Larry Albert Whitis and Bradley John Tiefel; additional insurance was for David Ladis Zatopek.

Vice President Jerry Valchar gave his report on lodge activities. He also reminded members of the officers' seminar to be held February 24th at Cyclone, Texas.

President Navratil announced that the lodge committees would remain the same as in 1989.

George and Millie Schiller were reported to be on the sick list. Get well wishes are extended to all convalescing.

Ladis and Georgia Navratil were hosts for the January meeting.

Our 44 members and 6 guests, who were present, stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed members, Mae Schleider and Martin Pampell. May they rest in peace.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers; all were present at this meeting.

President Dennis Hermis recognized our guests, namely, District V President Evelyn Mikeska (who spoke about District V spring meeting which will be held at Lodge No. 142 on Sunday, March 11 and she also reported on District V; four people made over a MILLION DOLLAR sales, which is great for District V.); other visitors were Bill Leitko, Jo Bun, Josephine Buri and Evelyn Hildebrandt.

from the hospital after a bout of double pneumonia and she is doing OK. Jan Vansa suffered third - degree burns on her arm before Christmas and is doing OK now. Jan, we missed you at our January meeting.

We received thank you notes from Jean Driska and Juanita Ramm.

Juanita was back in the hospital until Wednesday, January 24 for more surgery on her foot. I spoke with her Sunday and she was feeling good and in good spirits. Also a thank you was received from the Senior Citizens' activities for donation.

The minutes from November and December meetings were approved as read.

Twonew members were accepted in the lodge, namely, Ashley Platt and Ashley Walberg.

Chairpersons' reports were all good. The trustees' report -- all trustees were present and it was reported that the parts for hand dryers (in restrooms) have been ordered.

For old business: J.C. Johnson reported on ideas about starting dominogames at the hall. We had our first meeting Tuesday, January 16; as usual, onlya few of us who showed up wanted to play. J.C. guesses that we will have to go outside the membership to get anyone to show vp.

The few ofus enjoyed ourselves '.:;id would hope to try it again.

Game night has been called off at the lodge until the new laws can be looked into; if we decided not to continue game night, a lot of our lodge donations will be cut back and that would be a shame since we have alwaysbeen a caring lodge and always willing to donate to causes, plus the lodge has benefitted from the 40 percent utilities and repairs that game night has provided.

The chairpersons for the lodge remain the same, except for kitchen chairperson -- Harvey I.aflame was named to this position.

Greetings From Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities (Arlington) Dear Members: Here we are in a new year and a new decade. The 1980s were stormy years with earthquakes, volcanoes, plane crashes, hijacking, terrorists, spaceship explosion in the air, the Berlin Wall opened up so there is free travel between the two Germanies, bank and loan companies were going broke.

Are the 1990s going to be better?

Some experts seem to think so but we don't have a way to look into the future, therefore. we must lookat each day and do something useful.

We cannot change the past, nor guarantee the future, but what we do each day will be history tomorrow. In order to have a good past some day, we need a good present.

Lodge 183 is ten years old and survived the 1980s and is looking toward the future in the 1990s, will not 'be easy which will take a lot of hard work by everyone and will not be resolved in a few days. It will take years and some of us may be at that age we will not be able to see the job completed. We must do the best we can and leave something good for the next generation to carry on and complete; there needs to be cooperation, understanding and fraternalism and more new members to carry the load.

Lodge 183 had its first general meeting of 1990 on Sunday, January 14 with new vice president, secretary, treasurer and fraternal activities coordinator (FAC). let's wish them well and give them all the help we can and make 1990 a good year for Lodge 183.

Charlie Bragg won the $13 door prize so it still pays to attend meetings at Lodge 183; and, if you want your voice heard you need to attend meetings to voice your opinion.

Members -- this year there will be a :lance on the first and third Saturday of each month; a country - western dance on the first Saturday and polka music (polka band) on the third Saturday. Be sure to tell all your friends and neighbors and bring some of them to our dances.

The kitchen will also be open during dance nights for those who like to eat something while attending a dance.

The last Four - Lodge Christmas Party was a great success and the New Year's Eve dance was well attended with everyone eating blackeyed peas and cornbread for good luck to start a new year.

It is said that an optimist stays up to see the new year in while a pessimist stays up to make sure the old one leaves; some look forward to a new day while others wake up and wonder what happened.

Lodge No. 191, Lufkin The lodge held two very nice dances in the. month of December. On December 16th was a Christmas dance and the house was packed. The mood seemed festive and the band performed quite well. This was the first dance in couple of weeks and everyone was ready for it.

The second dance was held New Year's Eve, December 31st. Thelodge was sold out for this dance. Finger food was provided from 8 to 11 p.m. and, at midnight, after all the hugs and happy New Year wishes, a dinner was served. It consisted of ham, blackeyed peas, cabbage and cornbread. This was an excellent meal and, hopefully, it will bring GOO[ LUCK in this year to all whc participated.

I heard last week that Billye Starr our hostess chairman, wa~ hospitalized for pneumonia, she thought she had the flu. We hope all the sick are better.

The minutes, read by our Secretary Merel Kovar, were approved after a minor correction, and our Treasurer Lydia Alholm gave a good report.

A thank you was read from Father Sul Stefulo.

It was voted on to change $3 for our guest lunches. · Our sunshine and hostess chairmen were out ill so there were no reports.

Royand LydiaAlholmleft yesterday (21st) with a group of 22 SPJST members and friends, leaving from the Dallas - Fort Worth Airport for Las Vegas; these arrangements were made by Sid and Justine Pokladník, and will join the Austin group at Stardust Hotel. I'm sure they are having a wonderful time.

We extend our congratulations to Portia Anne Riney of Fort Worth and Joseph William Janucik of Eagle River, Alaska. Portia is the granddaughter of Rosemary Gribble and to Steve and Amy Holland on the arrival of their son Steve Spencer Holland and the first great grandchild for Rosemary.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Agnes (Reznicek)Owen on the loss of her brother. May he rest in peace.

Ennis Sewing Circle Has the "flu bug" gotten you yet? It seems as though no family escapes it.

My dear Tom evidently had it and it developed into pneumonia. He died January 12th. of complications and had another stroke. Funeral services were held at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel, interment was at Restland Memorial Park. Tom shall be dearly missed by our children and me but. we have fond memories of him as a husband, father, grandfather and great - grandfather.

Our meetings were held November 9th and December 14th. President Sadie Kubin presided at the meetings.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The secretary and treasurer gave their reports. They were approved as read.

A get wellcard and money gift were sent to Sisters Julie Harris, Wilma Jelinek and Georgia Morales. A thank you note was received from each one of them. A get well card and money gift were sent to Sisters Doris Foit and Annie Novak. Sister Julie Harris and husband were sick for quite some time, but I am happy to report that they have recuperated. Sister Bettie Marusak has been transferred to the Ennis care Center. We wish her a speedy recovery. Sister Libbie Wisniewski cut her finger on a glass bottle and had several stitches taken.

She is okay.

Sister Alene and Willie Skrivanek thanked the Circle for the money gift they received for their 50th wedding anniversary. Sister Anne Zvolanek thanked the Circlefor the get well card and money gift. Sister Wilma Jelinek thanked the quilters for quilting her quilt. Quilt was quilted for Albie Nesuda in November.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to birthday sisters. A birthday card was given to birthday sisters present.

Sister Millie Vytopil of Houston reached her 90th birthday last November 25th. Congratulations!

We didn't meet in January. Election of officers will be held in February.

Whatever charity the Circle will contribute to, was tabled until the February meeting.

Sisters Annie Vrana, Leona Jurica, Vivian Vrana and Annie Kostak sent regards and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

Donations received -- Memorial for their sister - in - law, Mary Schulenburg from Georgia Zaboinik, Anne and John Zabojnik for Jerry Laznovsky from Georgia Zabojnik.

Sister Wilma Jelinek gave a donation for having a quilt quilted and Mary Sebestik for winning the quilt. Sister Rosie Zázvorka donated a pound of coffee. Sister liddie Pavelka brought plants and an assortment of ribbons and bows for sisters to take. Door prizes brought by Sisters Vojteska Janicek, Sadie Kubin and liddie Pavelka. Sister Vickie Kohn and Alvin Elsik are on the sick list. Hope they get well soon.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by Lil Laznovsky and her co workers. A lovely poinsettia plant was given to each of the officers.

Before we exchanged gifts, we sang Christmas hymns and carols, in Czech and English. Bill Foit led the singing along with Sisters Liddie Pavelka, Mary Sebestik and Anne Zvolanek.

Everyone seemed to have a merry time. Let us hope that 1990 will be a good year for everyone.

Yes! It's me! I have been told several of you out there have been wondering what happened to me.

Thanks for your concern. I feel like the bear who hid away for the winter. I am ashamed to also say I hid in the early fall. Oh, well! Here I am back! Tis the old saying: "It's better late than never."

Going as far back as our September meeting, I am only giving the highlights. A moment of silence was held for our dear departed Sister Helen Jo Vrla, Christine Gaida and Olga Sebestik. We introduced a speaker from the Citizens Against Crime. She gave us very important information regarding crime here in our city; for instance, there were 90,000 rape cases alone last year.

Now, one out of three people is considered to be a victim of crime. — Sunshine Report -- Get well greetings were sent to Dorothy Reznik, David John Reznik, Adolph Salac and libbie Smith. Circle of Czech Women made a donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Ernest Janecek and to Leukemia Association of North Central Texas in memory of Helen Vrla, Jr. Congratulations were given to Liddie and Jim Pavelka who celebrated their 55 years of wedded life and who were honored by Liddie's sisters and brothers with a dinner and reception September 1st.

At our October meeting, members Christine Woods, Lillian Kaska and libbie Slovalc." were welcomed back after being absent from our meetings for quite a while.

The main order of business was planning our Christmas Party and Dinner, which we decided to have catered at Sokol Zizka.

Sunshine Report -- Thinking of you cards were sent to Theresa Carper, Floy Pokladnik and Hattie Ground. A basket of fruit was brought to Anne Zvolanek and Hattie Ground. Anne had knee surgery and Hattie had open - heart surgery. A money gift and card was sent to Floy Pokladnik who was also hospitalized.

It was announced that Sister Mary Nesuda celebrated her 98th birthday.

In December, our Christmas Party was very well attended. President Podhrasky held a moment of silence for all our departed sisters.

A short business meeting was held.

Correspondence was received from Veterans Center (thanking us for the donation), and from SPJST Supreme Lodge (for our donation to the Czech Chair.)

Our membership chairperson announced that, from now on, we will only receive a receipt when we pay our dues; no longer will membership cards be printed.

Esther Cunningham reported that, in this year 1990, the American Czech Culture Society will celebrate their 50th anniversary.

President Podhrasky thanked all the officers and committee chairpeople for working as hard as they did all year.

A new member, Martha Patak, was introduced.

Get well cards were mailed to Florence Peressenyi and Liddie Pavelka.

The decorations for our party were just beautiful. Thanks go to Evelyn and Henry Cechan, Helen and Bob Oates, Bertha and Julius Podhrasky, Bessie and Gilbert Kalich for the decoration work.

Peppermint candies were compliments of Dorothy Reznik.

Christmas singing was led by Julius Podhrasky, Henry Cechan and Wanda Petr.

On a sad note, we are sorry to report that Sister Alice Roberts lost her dear husband, Tom. Sister Ruth Chmelar lost her mother, Mary Dusek.

SLAVIC LANGUAGES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS The Department of Slavic languages of the University of Texas at Austin is considered to be one of the best in the nation. However, had it not been for the intense interest and shrewd lobbying efforts of a determined band of Czech students, creation of the department would have been delayed many years.

In 1909 five Czech s tu dents organized the club, Cechie. The group met to study Czech history, sing Czech songs and speak the language. The group did not prove successful until 1913, when Charles Knizek assisted with the group's lobbying efforts.

Knizek convinced school officials that the some 100,000 Texas Czechs would look with favor upon the establishment of a course in the Czech language. An $1,800 appropriation was added to the university budget, and Knizek became the first adjunct professor of Czech and Russian languages.

Today the University of Texas, junior colleges and a number of high schools offer courses in the Czech language. The SPJST continues to support the teaching of the Czech language at the University of Texas as well as junior colleges and high schools across the State of Texas.

District II Activities' Schedule 'Dear Members of District II: I hope each of your holidays was filled with much joy, good food and good health. I hope you have kept that nasty old bug away from your house.

I am really looking forward to this year as a busy and successful year. I hope each of you has set goals for your youth club and that we will all see an increase in the number of active members.

As usual, the year begins with many activities. Mark your calendars with all the following dates: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1990 -­ Benefit Dance for our friend DYC Susan Bohnenberger at Seaton Star Hall. Plan this dance as one of your February socials. What a perfect way to show true fraternalism by helping a family much in need. Thanks to each of you who have sent in donations from your youth club.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1990 -­ DISTRICT II SKATING PARTY at Skate Haven in Temple. The time will be from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Remind your youth members to bring a friend along and ask that friend to join your youth club.

On Saturday, December 9th Lodge were unable to attend this benefit, a Pokrok No. 88 opened its heart and total of over $4,000 was raised. extended a generous helping hand by Brother Harley Cox and his lovely hosting a benefit dance for District IV wife, Viola, chaired the event for the DYC Susan Bohnenberger and her evening along with the members of lovely family. the Entertainment Committee who Through the generous donations of helped see to all the arrangements for the guests in attandance, all the · the evening. receipts from the dance admission and The Texas Central Sounds played all the many donations from those who some of the most outstanding polkas

and waltzes throughout the evening.

Brother Tom Marsh and his wife, Lydia, hosted the dance along with Brother Leander Pflughaupt and wife, Josephine. They worked so long and hard, I don't think they ever got to enjoy the dances with their spouses; no one complained though, because the time was well given for this lovely lady.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese and her husband, Tim, along with their son, Jason; also Brother Rudy Sefcik and his wife, Maxine, and

their son, Terry Craig, were gracious enough to travel all the way to Houston during this busy time of year to help make the evening the great success that it was.

Our esteemed District V Director Louis Hanus and his lovely wife, Oleta, Lodge 88 President Jerry Ermis, and 2nd Vice President Pearl Hanka helped top the evening of VIPs. I would also like to thank my DYC Assistant Nancy Steubing and Lodge 88 Youth leader Barbara Linney, for their support.

There are so many others who graciously gave of their time and talents, but wish no special recognition. They have my deepest, heartfelt thanks.

This was a team effort. It showed everyone's support, talent, generosity and true fraternalism which made the evening a success.

May we all remember all those who are in need of our help, not only during the Christmas Season, but all year long.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club Dear Members and Friends, The youth club meeting was held January 7, 1990 after the mother lodge meeting with a fair attendance.

The youth received an award at the Sokol Christmas Party. The award read: In Consideration of your Past and Present Devotion to Sokol West, an Award of Appreciation will be presented in your Behalf. The award goes to Cottonwood Youth Club.

Youth clubbers are planning a bowling party soon.

Their Valentine Party will be February 9 and everyone (adults and youth) is invited, to also participate in games. Food and sweets will be served as well as exchange of Valentines so all of you attend and have fun.

Members, save your Christmas cards because our youth club can use them for craft.

Birthday celebrants for January are Melinda Kolar and Craig Hromadka.

by January 31, and the theme this year is "Pioneer Days."

The youth club decided co go bowling for their social. They agreed to meet at Delmar Lanes at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 13th.

New members Ross Patton and Matthew Herring were welcomed. We also had three guests, Melanie, Hilliary and Holly Fisher, who were invited by Melissa Havemann.

Another topic of discussion was the Houston livestock Show and Rodeo,

We agreed to go on a Saturday morning or afternoon, however no particular date was set. This will be discussed, again, at our next meeting.

After our meeting was adjourned, everyone enjoyed delicious refreshments which were prepared by Kristi Sokol.

Lodge 88 Houston Youth Discuss Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, On January 3, 1990 the Lodge 88 youth held their monthly meeting which was called to order by President Darlene Migl.

There were 19 members present and this included two new members.

Secretary Marlene Migl read the roll call of officers. All officers were present with the exception of our treasurer.

After the membership roll was called, the minutes of our December meeting were read and no corrections or additions were made. We had no correspondence.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney reminded our youth to enter the TShirt Design Contest. She added that,

toughing it out paid off and we won a third place -- Mayor's trophy for our entry which, as you can see by the picture, was a nativity scene. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way.

We had fun throwing our candy to people we recognized in the crowd.

Also on December 17th, we presented our nativity scene to the Moody Nursing Center. We also sang the Disney version of "Twelve Days of Christmas", "'Jingle Bells" and Santa showed up and we helped him pass out presents to the rest home residents. Everyone did a super job and enjoyed the trip.

Just a reminder -- to get your T Shirt drawings in, and make your hearts for the rest home by January 31st and also don't forget to decorate your boxes for our Valentine meeting, they will be given as door prizes this year so fill them with a good treat.

Our fund - raising plans for this month are working and donating food to SPJST games for our youth club weekend trip in June to Houston and Galveston.

This month's social will be Lady Longhorns' basketball game at Austin on Tuesday, January 16th.

The charity project for this month consists of our youth club donating $100 to former District IV Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger for the benefit of her serious illness.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported that in February we will adopt Grandparent's Day at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I and we will go visit the residents and make them something for Valentine's Day. The next youth club meeting will be on February 11 at our SPJST hall.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On December 10, 1989 Lodge 88 held their adult monthly meeting and some very important elections for the next year were held.

In the area of youth, Youth Leader Barbara Linney was re - elected to her third year as Lodge 88 youth leader.

All of the youth are very happy about this decision; for. Barbara has been a super leader. Even when she just started, she always tried her hardest in everything. She has brought many new things into our youth club. Even though my final year as a youth club member is coming soon to a close, I look forward to Barbara's continued success.

The most crucial and baffling election of all was all over four youth club members, Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl and Crystal Wallace were all nominated for the office of flag bearer. The past year there had just been started of having three. After all the votes were counted, the three flag bearers, for the lodge in 1990, will be Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl and Crystal Wallace. I still think it is great that all of these youth club members wish to participate so actively in their adult lodge.

Also during that day, thanks goes to Cindy Groendes, Michelle Linney and Tommie Wallace for bagging candy and fruit to be given out at the Christmas program.

Dear Members, We had a great time at our January, 1990 meeting.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese came and talked to us about starting our crafts for YAD and camp coming up. She brought socks, sticks and other items and we made puppy puppets. They are great and a lot of fun to play with.

47 Youth To Participate In Benefit Project

The Lodge 47 Seaton Youth Club meeting was called to order for its January 7, 1990 meeting at 2:15 p.m.

We watched the installation of our mother lodge officers.

Jennifer Pechal led the pledge and club motto.

There were 34 members, 3 adults and 4 guests present.

The guests were David Hejl, Lisa Greger, Ross Wellen and Jeremy.

Birthdays for January are Heath Novosad, Billy Holt and Jennifer Kohutek.

Door prizes were won by Jason Smith and David Koslovsky.

The youth leader's report included family night, a social, a benefit dance, and chili supper.

The family night will be Friday, January 19th. Our social was great fun. We went bowling January 14th.

Our chili supper and auction will take place on February 16th.

Lodge 47 Seaton will be sponsoring a benefit dance for Susan Bohnenberger this Friday, February 2nd which will be from 9 p.m. to 12 midnight with music by Charles Mikeska and The "Sensations." The cost will be $4 per person. Come and help former District IV Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger overcome her serious illness. I hope to see you there!

FRANCES OLEXA, who passed away January 11, 1990 at age 90.

Survivors are two sons, Henry and Erwin Olexa and their wives; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Houston, Texas on January 13, 1990.

Frances Dvorak Olexa 1899 - 1990 January 13, 1990 Eulogy Frances Olexa was a member of Lodge No. 88, a fraternal benefit society organized in 1897 whose tenets are Benevolence, Humanity and

Brotherhood. Frances Olexa was a member of our SPJST Society for 71 years. She died January 11, 1990 at the age of 90 years.

Sisters, Brothers and Friends: The final gavel has been sounded by the Supreme Architect and the curtains of fraternal love and fellowship have been drawn together on the life of our departed Sister Frances Olexa.

The worldly session in which she has taken part stands adjourned forever. Today we come to fulfill our benevolent obligation to Frances, and as brothers and sisters to pay our final respect. To the loved ones surviving her, we extend our deep sympathies and offer them our aid, comfort and consolation in their sad hours of bereavement.

We have been deeply touched by the passing of our sister, but the sadness in our hearts and her loved ones who survive her, know that Frances lived a useful life of benevolent service here on earth and always continued to spread the benevolent principles of our SPJST Society and to assure the welfare of our members and its growth and prosperity for years to come.

Frances Dvorak Olexa was born in Vienna, Austria on October 8, 1899. In 1910, at the age of 11, she came with her family to the United States and settled on a farm near East Bernard, Texas. Later that year the family moved to Houston. She was married to Frank Olexa on March 25, 1922 and the wedding was held at Lodge No. 88, Houston.

During her 71 years as a member of Lodge No. 88, she always dedicated herself to complete service as a humanitarian and fraternalist in the SPJST. She served in many capacities at the lodge, and the proudest moment at Lodge No. 80 and the SPJST Society was in 1987, when Frances Olexa was recognized as the winner of the "Fraternalist of the Year" Award.

The fraternalist of the year award was the first time the Supreme Lodge initiated a program to recognize achievements by members of our Society. Frances was really proud on that occasion and so was the membership of Lodge No. 88.

Frances served many years as an officer of Lodge No. 88 -- vice president - 7 years, financial secretary - 10 years, recording secretary - 10 years, Chairman of Publication Committee - 25 years. She has been a delegate to the state convention since 1944 (covering a span of 50 years), a charter member and first president of the Birthday Club Sisters organized in 1946, an active member of the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club since 1920, a charter member of the Choral Singers Club, historian for 8 years and during these years, the history of Lodge No. 88 was printed in 1980 (covering the years from 1910 to 1949.)

Frances Olexa is survived by two sons, Henry Olexa and wife, Della of Houston, Erwin Olexa and wife, Doris of Beaumont; eight grandchildren and eleven great - grandchildren.

Frances firmly believed that, as brothers and sisters, we must work mutually together to the end, of attaining the high aims of our Society in Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood; as a devoted member of Lodge No. 88 for many years, she exemplified the true spirit of fraternalism and fulfilled, with pride and honor, the obligations and promises she took when she was admitted as a member of Lodge No. 88. She gave her time freely to show and tell what fraternalism is all about.

For our final farewell to our Sister Olexa, let us give evidence to her for the last time our fraternal love and esteem, may honor be given to her memory now and forever.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the officers of SPJST Lodge No. 97 in Placedo, Texas wish to express our sincere sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of our dear departed member GEORGE FALTESEK, of Placedo, Texas, who passed away on Sunday, December 10, 1989 in a Victoria hospital following a short illness. He attained the age of 64.

Mr. Faltesek was a native of Victoria County. He was born August 18, 1925, to the late Peter John and Louise Frantis Faltesek in Victoria, Texas. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of VFW Post No. 4403 in Port Lavaca. He was retired from ALCOA. Funeral services for Mr. Faltesek were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, at the graveside in Shillerville Cemetery with Roy McLaurin officiating. Military honors were vested by the VFW. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of McCabe - Carruth Funeral Home.

Surviving was his wife of 40 years, Ruby Lee Thomas Faltesek of Placedo.

We regret to add, that Ruby passed away one week later. Mr. and Mrs. Faltesek are survived by a daughter, Barbara Neill of Wood, Hawaii; a son, Louis Faltesek, Jr. of Placedo; a sister, Hermina Conn of Grand Prairie and four grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Strelczyk and his parents.

Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93, Hobson, Texas on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother FERDINAND ANTHONY EHUNGER, of Hobson, Texas, who died on December 14, 1989 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 28 days.

Brother Ehlinger was born in Devine, Texas to William and Theresa Schmidt Ehlinger on August 16, 1923.

He was married to Lydia Ondrej on June 24, 1944 in Devine. She preceded him in death on February 27, 1981. He lived in Hobson most of his life, was a noted amateur baseball player, and has been inducted into the South Central Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.

The last time I saw. Brother Ehlinger (Ferdie we called him) was a few weeks before his death of a lengthy illness. It was in the district court room of the Karnes County Courthouse, a jury panel had been summoned that day, but selection of a jury had not yet begun. Brother

Ehlinger, district clerk since 1963, walked toward the front of the room to confer with his deputy and ensure that everything was in readiness for the day's proceedings. He walked near the edge of the aisle, pale, tired in appearance, but with head held high, a smile on his face and a word for everyone.

Portraits of former jurists and court officials adorn the walls of the courtroom and Ferdie's had been added to them, but his is smaller than the rest. He was asked why the picture was small and he answered: "It depicts the size of the Honorees' accomplishments." That was the Ferdie we knew, enjoyed and respected.

Survivors include his daughter and son - in - law, Dr. and Mrs. Michael (Jill) Ball of Pueblo West, Colorado; his mother, Mrs. Theresa Ehlinger of Devine; seven brothers, William Ehlinger of Falls Church, Virginia, Alex, Louis and Arthur Ehlinger, all of Devine, Herb Ehlinger of San Antonio, Marvin Ehlinger of Houston and Melvin Ehlinger of Weslaco; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Marie Haase and Mrs. Alda Rose McAllister of Devine, Mrs. Laura Mae McMillian of Lytle and Mrs. Marian Tschirhart of Castroville and three grandsons.

Requiem mass was celebrated Saturday afternoon, December 16 at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Karnes City. Interment followed in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Hobson. Reverend Lambert Bily and Reverend William Davenport officiated.

Survivors include daughter, Ruth Chmelar of Dallas; son Ted Dusek of Dallas; five grandchildren, three great - grandchildren; two brothers in Czechoslovakia and three sisters also in Czechoslovakia.

Funeral services were held at the Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Chapel on Northwest Highway with Rev. Fredrick Jacobi officiating . Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
