Tillie Helmcamp

(By Viola Cox) Since I am very proud of our 1990 Lodge 88 Fraternalist, Tillie Helmcamp, I want to tell you about my sister.

Tillie joined Lodge 88 in 1959, being signed up by Alfred Hilsher, and has been very active ever since, serving in various positions in both the lodge and district. One could say she has given 45 years of service, holding several positions simultaneously.

In the lodge she started first with being youth leader for three years, 1961 to 1963. Under her leadership, the Youth Club became one of the (Cont'd on Page 7)

Sincethe pioneers of our SPJSTleft us with the three tenents: Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood, let us practice these ingredients and welcome. these new members as well as our members of longstanding into our respective lodges.

As most of you know, a very essential element of each lodge is the new member. A new member generally represents additional shoulders, so to speak, to share. the work of the' lodge; the new members also represent the future leaders of our Society, ln most instances, it's remembered how you welcome and treat new member(s) during the early acquaintance in your lodge and sometimes will determine its future participation. Scientific tests reveal that you and yours truly·form lasting opinions about individuals, ideas and situations within the brief time we are exposed to them. It's also knownthat once · formed these impressions are difficultto change.

WHY? Because we don't wish to admit, even to· ourselves, that we made a mistake.

Believing and recognizing these traits indicates why it's so important that each member or guest be favorablyimpressed at the first lodge activity he or she attends.

Do you ask yourself, what can Ido to make the member feel welcome. Try to introduce the member. to others.

Make him or her feel that they belong to your lodge, instead of being just a file number in yourlodge office. Send the member home wanting to return to continue your lodge fellowshipas well as enjoyment.

Also try not to embarrass a new member or overwhelm a member.

*** What is title insurance? A title policy insures the existence or non existence of rights in real property.

Because of the permanent nature of land, rights claimed by others may accumulate in property as it passes from owner to · owner through the years. These rights can limit your use and enjoyment of a home or other real estate -: and lead to financial loss.

Howdoes title insurance protect the home buyer? Title insurance is based on a search of public records for problems that affect real estate ownership. Discovery of such

problems before completion of a home purchase· often allows them 'to be cleared up ·so the . transaction can proceed. For a: one - time charge at

closing, title insurance will help resolve problems of title, will pay for defending against an attack on title as insured, and will pay valid claims.

There are two types of title insurance --- owner's and lender's. An owner's policy is needed.'to protect the home buyer· Is title insurance required in a home buying transaction? Generally, the lender will require lender's title insurance to protect his real estate investment; his coverage ordinarily is paid for by the home buyer.

Depending on local custom, owner's title insurance may be paid for by either the seller· or. the buyer, but buyer protection is not mandátory.

What about the amount of coverage in a title policy? Lender's title insurance is issued in the amount of the loan; the amount · of liability diminishe~ and. finally disapp~ars. as the loan is paid off. Owner s title insurance normally is issued in .the amount of the home purchase pnce; coverage remains in effect as long as the owner, or his heirs· or devisees, retain an interest in the real estate.

Ordinarily, more title insurance coverageon a policy can be purchased at any time. Some title insurers offer an automatic "inflation rider," where the amount · of coverage under an owner's policyautomatically increases as the value of the insured real estate goes up. Initially, title insurance is available for a one - time premium paid at closing. ln· one example of the need for owner coverage, real estate was purchased from persons named in the willofits deceased owner. Years later, another will of the same deceased person was discovered and was found to be valid in a court proceeding. This left the buyers with no title to the real estate. Since they had purchased owner's title insurance, the buyers were paid the full amount· of their polic!.by the title company --- which equaled ithe purchase price· of the property;

Our XXVth Convention in 1988 adopted the By - law on page 19 of our SPJST By - laws -- Article 25 (a): ''The Finance Committee shall meet at least biennially to review the retirement plan and recommend changes to the Supreme lodge and willmeet as necessary during the year of the convention, after January 1, for the purpose of reviewing the overall financial posture of the Society," pertaining to our standing Finance Committee. This article sets out the duties of the Finance Committee rather precisely, especially, "for the purpose of reviewing the overall financial posture of the Society."

The Finance Committee will be meeting . soon and the members are encouraged to seek information from the Supreme lodge officers and their departments, especially, in viewof the report of the Actuary's examinationof our progress.

Our SPJST Finance Committee wouldbe well - advised to review and study the Recommendations adopted in 1988 on pages 55, 56, 57 and 58 of our "Proceedings," especially, the "per díems" for various individuals.

The Soviet Union has minted the world's first bullion coin made of palladium, a metal in the platinum family. The 1989 coins, minted in 1 ounce sizes only, bear the image of a ballerina and cost · about $150 at palladium's current market price.

STATE TAROK TOURNAMENT Saturday, March 3, 1990 SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers, In the new year of 1990, our first Sunday of the month Lodge 6 meeting began with installation of officers by Brother Robert Dobecka, past vice president. · Then, the meeting was opened by President Johnnie Krizan. Pledge to the flag and SPJST Motto were recited

by Tammi Dobecka and Celia Dobecka along with the membership.

Following were reports given by our officers and reading of the minutes of our last month's meeting by Barbara Hykel.

Treasurer Karen Kroll and Financial Secretary George Straten read their reports.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz expressed her thanks to all who helped her with the Christmas program and all the other things which she needed help with; also a special "Thank you" to all those who helped us decorate our lodge hall for our Christmas celebration and those who helped take the decorations down, which needed to be cleaned up for the New Year's Eve Private Party sponsored by the Czech Restaurant of West; it was a full house attendance; mostly of young folks and some older ones who seemed to be having a whooping good time.

I came in at 11:00 p.m. to help with the cleanup after 12 midnight, the cleanup took us 2Y2 hours. Those who helped were Bobby and Peggy Dobecka, Robert and Lydia Dobecka, Johnnie Krizan and I, plus some of the nice folks who sponsored the party also helped.

Friday, January 5, after our Trustees' meeting, we mopped the hall floor and cleaned the tables and chairs. Those who helped were George and Josie Mae Straten, Willie Mae Schuetz, Bobby, Peggy and Tammi Dobecka, Johnnie Krizan, Robert and Lydia Dobecka and I. The proceeding, at the meeting, was a scholarship check presented to Margaret (Lander) Lenart by Bobby Dobecka in memory of his sister, Teresa Dobecka, from the Memorial Scholarship Fund. Sister Margaret Lenart is attending college at Tyler, Texas.

Get well cards were sent to Willie Sherik and Joshua Hykel. We were glad to have Henry Matus with us at tne meeting who spent a few days in the West hospital during Christmas holidays. I am glad to report. they are all doing OK at this writing and congratulations to Fred and Barbara Mechell and son born November 9, 1989.

George Straten read a letter from the Supreme Lodge explaining to the

members about the Refund Premuim checks who are entitled to receive them.

At this time, the president recognized members who prepared good dinner before our meeting started. The leading cook was Lydia Dobecka and her helpers were Josie Mae and George Straten, Peggy Dobecka and Robert Dobecka. The other members. who came, brought all kinds of sweets. Eating together was enjoyed by all and thanks for pitching in.

Here are a few words about me; while I was coming home from my ranch (near Cottonwood Hall), I had a blow out on my truck. There were about 10 or 15 cars which passed by and no one offered to help. Then came a fast moving truck and put on his brakes and turned around to help me.

He was none other than our Past Vice President and Coordinator Robert Dobecka! I was very glad to see him which was an example of true fraternalism. Thanks Brother Robert for your help which finished my day.

Our next Trustees' meeting will be Friday night, February 2 at 7:30 p.m.; the lodge meeting will be Sunday, February 4 at 1 p.m. Dinner will be served before our meeting and all of you are invited to try your best to attend; be there at 12 noon if you can.

The meal will be prepared by George and Josie Mae Straten.

We hope our new Vice President Joseph Krizan and his family can attend and be with us.

Door prize winner. at this meeting was Christine Matus who was present.

The progressive prize of $1 O was Andrew Wachsmann and second $10 prize was Richard Veselka; neither one was present.

Our third prize will be $1 at our next meeting.

I hope to see you at the next meeting.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: Our January meeting was called to order by President LaVerne Cabla; all officers were present.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and held a moment of silent prayer for deceased members, Dennis Elles of Corpus Christi, Hilda Kosel of Temple and Julius Lange of Rosebud.

Visitors at our meeting were Chuck Cox, and Supreme Lodge Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska was also present. Brother Leonard started off the meeting by installing the 1990 officers and Board of Trustees.

Members celebrating birthdays in January were Joe Haisler, Kenneth Marek "The Big 40" and Johnny Kelere k.

Wedding anniversary celebrants are Jeffery and Samantha Mikeska.

The monthly reports were given by the various committee chairmen.

It was decided by members to start social games Wednesday, January 17 and we will be playing every

Wednesday night; if interested in working, please come by the hall or contact Carol Chervenka.

Our local lodge straight domino tournament will be February 23rd at the hall. The deadline for entry is February 15th and there will be a $5 entry fee ner nerson. Interested persons should contact Billy Smetanka or Wilbert Mikeska.

State Straight Domino Tournament will be March 24th. The "42" games will be April 7th.

State Lodge Officers' Workshop will be held Saturday, February 24th at Cyclone. Please make plans to attend this informative meeting. , Chuck Cox and Leonard Mikeska both spoke on the pros and cons of incorporating the lodge for the purpose of obtaining a beer license.

Chuck also had several good suggestions on ways of helping to identify minors.

It was voted on to make a donation to District IV Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger who has 'a serious illness and a benefit dance will be held Saturday, February 3, at Star Hall.

New and additional insurance policies were for members Carroll Hudson, Tina Janicek, Tonya Janicek, Ronnie Marek, Brett Marek, Melody Marek, Brenda Williams and Clarence Psencik. Please come and visit our lodge whenever you can.

The Board of Trustees will have their monthly meeting on the third Monday of each month.

The lodge meeting will be held on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

Door prizes were won by Dorothy Haisler and Robert Macek; the · dominoes, donated by Brother Leonard Mikeska, were won by Ray Coots.

Our next meeting will be February 12th at 7 p.m. See you then.

We had a moment of silence for deceased member, Joseph luska.

Secretary Sister Pat Fowler read the minutes from our December meeting and they were approved.

Sister Margaret Krajca, our treasurer, gave her report of the expenses.

FAC Sister Kaye Lynn Kovar read the membership a letter received from the Supreme Lodge.

Youth Leader Melissa Macalik gave a report on the youth and their activities. They participated in . selling candy for one of their projects. The youth will be having a Valentine Party on February 7th at 7:00 p.m.

Secretary Latham read the minutes of our last meeting and the minutes were approved.

Correspondence was read from lodge No. 47, Seaton that they were holding a fund - raiser for Susan Bohnenberger. Eddie Kunz moved that we donate money to Susan Bohnenberger, in order to defray her medical expenses. The motion was seconded by D.I. Bohac, motion carried. Members voted to donate $300.

Drawing for door prizes resulted -­ ligie and Louise Ivicic, Frank Pajestka, Sr., Otto and Adele Horelica and Daniel Grossman.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News First of all -- I just hope someone will read this notice. Oné of our ladies · attended the Blue Room dance · on December 17, 1989 and she said she was the last one to leave. She had worn a London Fog Coat and remembered she hung it in the Oock Room and when she went to get it, there was a London Fog coat, but a man's coat. Evidently, her coat was mistakenly picked up. She said her coat is long and the man's coat was short. If the right party would be kind as to leave it in the Lodge 88 office, she promised she'd bring his back.

The youth club had a wonderful Christmas program and party on December 11th. Barbara linney has worked so hard to cheer all these little boys and girls. The Choral Group sang and they invited the youth to sing Christmas carols with them under the leadership of Helen Hegwood, in place of Tim Kostom, whowas unable to be there; his brother - in - law, Arnold Spencer, was buried that day. You know who had the most fun -- were all the grandparents, namely, Darilek with 23 present, Mrs. Jeanette Raymond, Earline Hoffman, Jerry and Betty Postom, Ernest and Marjorie Anders, the Warren Havemanns, the Buri's and may more.

The children presented a "Skit," which was so cute.

If you heard a lot of laughter and commotion coming from the dining room at the lodge on December 4th, you would have guessed correctly; it was the last Czech class period. The students -- 24 enrollees were celebrating their last study period.

"No more school, no more books and no more mean old teacher's books."

Much credit for arranging these last period capers goes to Angela Prasek, Esther Holton, Earline Hoffman and Avis Banks. One must not omit the names of the many who brought food, gifts, a birthday cake, baked by Esther Holton and well wishes for Mr. Souchek who had his 84th birthday and had completed his 16thten - week study period, which began in 1981.

Apparently the large enrollment shows that the students desire to learn about the customs of each and manners of their progenitors. Included in the activities were five members associated with the San Jacinto Community College Czech class, who came from Pasadena to renew old memories. Bill began the San Jacinto Community College Czech classes in 1976 and recently spoke at the Christmas meeting.

Of interest to most observers is that three students came to class traveling many miles; Angela Prazek and her daughter, Debbie, came from South Houston and Ann Baciea lives in Missouri Oty. They really must have it, as Czechs would say: "Maji to v krvi" (They have it in their blood.)

I have to add that the party was a big one. Mr. Souchekwas 84 years old and naturally tha: had to be recognized with "Happy Birthday" sung by all. You can say one thing, Mr. Souchek and wife, Alice, enjoy living to the fullest, . and are lovely people to have in "your midst.

Our annual meeting was held Sunday, December 10, 1989 with a large crowd attending.

President Jerry Ermis opened the monthly meeting at 10:00 a.m. and took care of the monthly business. The reports were given by the officers. I, Pearl Hanka, regretfully apologized for the omissionof twonames from the

l.odge 88 Volleyball Team who took · part in the tournament on November 4, 1989and they were Kathy Goedeke and Lee Pflughaupt -- fine young people.

President Ermis called the names of the deceased in November, namely, Arnold Spencer, Lucille Hilger, Ben Schiller and R. Buzek. He also announced those who are ill: Agnes Pederson, Ray Hagan, Della Kadlecek, Jerome Waltkowiak and Anna Svestka, who broke her hip.

President Ermis then presented a 50 - year pin to Rosie Bily Mikeska who, through some error, didn't get her pin during the year. We regret that, but are glad you were able to be with us this day.

The annual meeting took place at 11:00 a.m. and continued after a braised - beef lunch. ' · First the reports fromall the officers and committees were heard. Our Secretary Mildred Holeman will probably mail in the minutes to the Vestnik, so I won't touch on anything but the highlights.

After lunch 1st Vice President Marceil Malak presented the Memorial Service for 32 deceased members in 1989. It was most inspiring; she read the following messages: "The Human Touch" by Spencer Michael and "I Shall Not Pass This Way, Again."

Lodge No. 88, Houston News We had such a sad occasion at lodge 88, when we were notified of Frances Olexa's death on January 11, 1990. She had attended our Birthday Club the day before. We can say, "Frances died with her boots on," a quote she exemplified. We will surely miss her because she was highly respected, the same as Mr. Frank Olexa,whopreceded her in death. She is survived by two fine sons and their wives, Henry and wife, Della, Erwin and wife, Doris; eight grandchildren and eleven great - grandchildren, relatives and many, many friends.

The funeral liturgy was held Saturday, January 13, 1990 at 1:30 p.m. in the Heights Funeral Chapel with Bishop John L. Morkovsky officiating, also Louis Hanus, who knew Mrs. Olexa for many years, delivered a beautiful message about

her life at the SPJST Lodge 88, where she had been a member for 71 years, and dedicated hérself'to the complete service as a humanitarian and fraternalist.

She was chosen in 1987 as the "Fraternalist of the Year" of the State of Texas. To name a few accomplishments, she· organized the Birthday Club in 1946, was a charter member of the "Hlahol" Dramatic Oub, and the Choral Group. She also served in every elected office with the exceptioriof president.

Graveside services were at WoodlawnCemetery. May she rest in peace.

On January 8, 1990 we had our monthly meeting; however, at 6:30 p.m., the officers and the Board of Trustees were installed by Parliamentarian Ellen Miculka.

Then at 7:30 p.m., President Ermis opened the meeting. The flags were presented and President Jerry called the roll of officers. He reported that we had no death since our previous meeting in December, 1989.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes and they were approved as read. Secretary Mildred also read the correspondence from CASA toys for children, an acknowlegement from NaomiSpencer and a letter filled with loveto all my friends from Joe Miksch, whohad been ill and in the hospital for several days. We were so happy to see him back. When Joe's not around, we all get "Shook - up."

The new applicants were accepted by the membership. President Ermis announced we'd have initiation in February and asked the sales representatives to get their new members out.

The reports were given by first and second vice presidents and Secretary Shirley Stonaker.

FAC Homer Alexander gave his report on the eye - glasses (a remarkable good deed for those who can't see and no money to buy glasses with). Do you realize how important his work is? A lot of his time is spent on this project. Also, on February 8th and 9th he'll have a defensive driving course again, and will have' several more later.

Our Youthleader Barbara linney is a super youth leader. She has the respect of the children, and that's Number One in anything you do.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Coxgave a very good report for 1989.

Due to so much bad weather, in December, our dances were low in attendance. We also gave one dance as a benefit to Susan Urbanek Bohnenberger who was District IV youth counselor until her illness, and were forcedto cancel one dance due to bad weather.

Don't forget the New Big Band playing on February 3 by Gary Richards; $10 a person.

NOTICE:Standing reservations for all dances must be confirmed ONE WEEK before the dance, or they will be cancelled.

Mary Kosut gave a good report on "Benevolence",

Margaret Allbritton gave the Blue Roomreport and also announced that the next Blue Room dance will be April 22 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Donnie Wavra furnishing the music. There willbe drinks, foodand a good dance for $12.50a person or $25 a couple.

Wednesday,January 24, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/5 Men's Oub. That should tell you something; the repair bills would be phenomenal, if these 44 men wouldn't give all their time for repairs.

Karl lindemann, chairman of the Board, gave a short report· on the election of their officers on the board.

They, too, do so much for thelodge ·so give credit where credit is due.

The Social Night Committee, consisting of 19 members, received praise from our Chairman Willie Wehring. This committee has been in existence · for 25 years and they, too, do lots of fraternal work.

President Marceil Malak called a meeting of the "Hlahol" Dramatic Oub -- for February 16, 1990.· President Gene Barcak of the Choral Group stated that they will start rehearsing every week because they have many requests to perform. One night a month, they will rehearse with the Czech Concert Orchestra. · Our new Legal Advisor Richard Snell was introduced by President Jerry, although he is well - known by many of us, he grew up in our Society.

He is the son of Mrs. Helen Snell and the late Dick Snell, also the grandson of the late Stephen and Helen Valcik.

He spoke to us and was quite impressive.

Mr. Bill Souchek announced that he will have 12 weeks of Czech instruction again. He wanted to retire but his students refuse to let him, so instead they want 16 weeks of it.

Mr. Souchek celebrated his 84th birthday on December 4th. My letter about this celebration got lost, but I will repeat it ifit doesn't come through this week.

District V President Evelyn Mikeska attended our meeting and announced that we will have the District V meeting on March 11 at Lodge No.142, Houston.

Our attendance for the monthly meeting was 125 members and 5 visitors; all you members try to come to our meetings, so you get acquainted with everyone.

On Friday night, January 12, the children of Emil Bily gave him a 75th Birthday Party in the Red Room. His four children, Susan Gregory, Diane Drake, Richard Bily, all from Houston and Anton Bily from San Antonio honored their father with a beautiful spread of goodies. We all had a wonderful time and we do hope he'll have many more happy and healthy years.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: The new year 1990 is here, so I suppose it's time to start thinking about how to make it better than the past year. However, the last few days in December really got cold. In Fort Worth, it got about one or two degrees below zero; then to the sunny south around Waco and Galveston, there was snow. People were caught with frozen pipes, some even had no electric power due to the cold, some cars were frozen up and wouldn't start and some froze while driving them. A few people were even cooking in their fireplace.

It was good that the schools were out for the holidays so that meant more gas for the homes. I suppose some of the younger generation has never seen it this cold.

I remember during the depression, in the early 1930s, it was this cold or even colder with ice and snow. I recall that lake Worth was frozen solid and some people were ice skating on the lake. There was someone who had his Model "T" Ford on the lake riding around; but in those days, the cars weren't as heavy as they are today.

Some men could pick up the front end and also the back - end. In those days, the cars weighed few hundred pounds; today the cars are much heavier, so, no matter how cold it gets don't drive a car on any lake.

Now in January it has turned warm so we are enjoying going around with much lighter coats. But don't forget, we still have until April for cold weather.

I hope the fruit trees in the valley aren't hurt too much, that would cause fruit to be real expensive; that will be the case, because even in Florida there was a freeze. Our daughter, who lives in Cape Canaveral, says the trees are brown so let's hope for the best.

With the weather changes with cold and then warm, it has caused lots of sickness. It seems the flu has been bad all over the state.

We had a nice turnout for our Christmas Party at Lodge No. 92. The program put on by our youth leader and his assistants and, of course, the children went wild when ole Santa made his appearance.

The punch and cookies went well with everyone. Martha Durham oversees that there is plenty to snack on. Thank you ladies for bringing the cookies. All of us enjoyed them.

After Santa distributed the gifts, he gave out bags of fruit - nuts and candy that our lodge furnished. Members who helped in the morning preparing bags are to be thanked very much.

We try to be sure our older and sick members get a little remembrance from our lodge. ltooksome to the ones who are in· a nursing home, even though they may not be able to eat what is in the bags, they appreciate getting them.

Sister Vlasta Dolkos, one of our older members, who in years past attended all lodge meetings still asks how the lodge is doing as well as all the members.

Then, I went to Keene, Texas to see Sunshine Easley, who is upin age, but to see her, you would think she is much younger. She is full of pep and loves to hear and tell jokes. Sunshine used to play drums for the bands we had in Fort Worth; when she would hit the drums she would bounce around, even though she is a small person.

Sunshine played in the following bands: Frank Blazek, Joe Merlick and Joe Milan.

I also got to see Mrs. Anna Martinec who is still active and lives with her daughter, Anna Mae George. The cookies Anna Mae's daughter made and gave me were very good.

These members as well as other members are now older and unable to be present at our meetings, we miss them because they are all good fraternal brothers and sisters and really · thought a lot about their SPJST lodge and wanted to see the membership grow. To all of them, we salute them for the work they did in their younger days.

It is sad around this time of the year when someone passes away, namely, Brother Bob Tulis who played football for Detroit lions; Brother Farmer

1aymance, who was manager of our lodge for a while; and J.C. Clinton, father of our present manager, Joyce Tesar. Brother Clinton lived in Dallas and was buried in Restland Cemetery.

To these who passed away, may they rest in peace.

It was a great occasion to be able to help celebrate the 45th anniversary ordination for Monsignor William Botík, who is a priest of Christ the King in Dallas. There were about 16 or 18 priests, several nuns and the Bishop of Dallas present. Bishop Thomas Tschoepe and the choir sang so beautifully. Msgr. Botík is a cousin of Carl W. Zich, Mary Pulliam and Sophie Blazek. Msgr. Batik also has two brothers, Charlie Botík and Joe. Botik.

After mass, a reception was given in his honor by the school and church nuns.

Msgr. Wm. Botík is a 50 - year SPJST member of Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

I want to let you know that we are having a Czech school starting January 25th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The class will be held each Thursday through March 1st. This school will help you read and speak Czech. If you or someone you know would like to take this Czech course, please call Mr. Frank Kovar at (817) 834 - 2636 or call National Hall at (817) 624 - 1361.

We didn't have a meeting in December, however, our January meeting was very interesting. A lot of topics were discussed, mainly the roof which is now being put on. Also, a motion was made to have something done about getting beer kegs out of the basement and putting them under the bar. This was supposed to be done sometime ago, but other things came up. Another good idea was mentioned that when there is a dance on our meeting Sunday, members who are at that meeting will be admitted free, so be sure if you want something free, come to the meeting and get a free dance afterwards.

This is part of fraternal work that Lodge No. 92 does for its members, also a free meal after each meeting.

The past meal was served by Brother Kenneth and Sister Mary Ann Krivanek. It was nice to see members help clean up after the each meal.

Be sure to remember our Valentine's Dance on Sunday, February 11th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with music by The Sulak Band.

Try also to patronize other polka waltz dances sponsored by KJT, KJZT and Polonia Oub organizations that rent our building; these are all fraternal organizations.

Remember the game nights every first and third Tuesday of each month from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. which includes Taroky, Poker as well as other games.

All these games are in fun, so come have a good time with your fraternal brothers and sisters.

A few of our lodge members went to Seaton Star Hall to play Taroky and some did quite well. We need to challenge one of the other lodges some day soon.

Let's hope those who have or had the flu are over it and that everyone will be well in 1990. Good health to all of you and let's keep our wonderful organization over the state, a good fraternal organization.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury Outgoing President Vincent Hechler and Outgoing Vice President Henry Novak were honored at the January 10 meeting of Lodge No. 139.- Each was recognized for his years of service as an officer of our lodge.

Vincent Hechler had served continuously as an officer of the lodge since the mid - 1950s. His first position was that · of treasurer; following that he held the office of vice president untiťi982, at which time he became president and served in that capacity through 1989. Brother Hechler was presented a Texas shaped plaque and an SPJST jacket.

Henry Novak served as vice president for the past eight years, having been in office since 1982; he was presented with a plaque and an SPJSTcap.

The meeting was called to order by our new President Lonnie Lostak and all members stood to recite the SPJST Motto.

Lorenda Baldwin read the minutes of our last meeting.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Eloise Lostak gave their reports.

Correspondence was read, and it was announced that member Katherine Chovanec was in the Angleton - Danbury Hospital. We hope for a speedy recovery for Sister Chovanec.

Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Brothers Jerry Milan and Larry 1aznovsky arrived home safely Friday from Czechoslovakia and Brother Milan called our Sunday meeting to order and led us to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Mary Renfro's minutes were approved as read and also Sister Mary Hale treasurer's report.

An expression of thanks was read from the family of Sister Ella Davis, and correspondence from Brother Leonard Mikeska of the Supreme Lodge.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on all cards sent. We hope all the sick are getting better.

Vice President Sister Rose Steinman, our photographer, showed pictures that were taken at the Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party and she is busy sending out pictures.

Assistant Youth Leader Sister Carrie Milan reported that Sister Carolyn Cleveland was working over the weekend in Denver, Colorado with Sister Marilyn Milan for the Market Western Wear and due back today.

Sister Mary Renfro was referred to the Mansfield Nursing Center by Sister Maxine Sefcik and plans are being made to help Kristina Eckelman from Czechoslovakia celebrate her lOOth birthday on Thursday, January 25th at 2:30 p.m. with a little taste of Czechoslovakia.

As I See It By: W.J. "Bill" Malina

One of the 'unsung heroes' in our lodges is the fraternal activities co ordinator. Among other duties, he or she, as the case may be, is the lodge's representative and liaison to the general public. It is through the efforts of the fraternal activities co ordinators that we fulfill part of our fraternal obligations to the people in our communities. Without question, the SPJST is designed to provide brotherly assistance to its own members, but it also has an obligation to exhibit and practice genuine concern for the less fortunate in our communities.

We claim. 'to be a non - profit organization, yet we are often criticized for that claim by those who are not aware of our benevolent activities. I sincerely believe. that if we, .as a fraternal organization, set aside self centeredness and develop a genuine concernfor the community,ourlodges will grow and prosper, both materially and spiritually. We must not· only exhibit public concern and practice communityservice, but we must make them known to the general public.

The responsibility of directing and supervising our benevolent activities rests with the fraternal activities co ordinator. The responsibility for making them happen and · for making the general public aware of them is ours -- the membership, in other words, it's up to 'each and everyone of us.'

At Lodge 88 we are fortunate to have Homer Alexander as our FAC. Homer was involved in the fraternal activities of our lodge before the FAC became an officerofthelodge, For the past several years Brother Alexander has been responsible for the AARP defensive driving courses being made available, at nominalcosts, four or five times a year at our lodge to both members and non - members over the age of 55. He has collectedover 1,750 pairs of used eyeglasses and, in the name of the lodge, turned the ni over to the Houston lighthouse who, in turn, have the lenses regrounded and distributed to needy people in all parts of the world.

He a}so collects used clothing, old books and magazines and turns them over to the Covenant House, a place where run - away, abused or mistreated teenagers can find a safe haven. He does the same thing for other charitable organizations in our community, such as The Children's

Wednesday, January, 24, 1990—VESTNIK/7 Clinic and San Jose Mission. Brother Alexander collects used toys and, at Christmastime, gives them to the CASA needy children's program. The Board of Trustees of our lodge has generously provided funds to enable Homer to buy new toys for this project. All of these activities are done in the name of SPJST Lodge No. 88.

active clubs in the state. She was second vice president for four years from 1955 through 1968, doing lodge advertising and writing a letter each week to the Vestnik. She was lodge secretary in 1969 and 1970.

In 1971 and 1972 Tillie was lodge president, being the first woman to serve in that position. To increase member attendance, she had skits honoring committees at the meetings and special movie nights particularly for the elderly showing films of Czechoslovakia.

She was first vice president for four years from 1977 through 1980. She then served on the Board of Trustees for five years, 1973 through 1976 and again in 1982. She was parliamentarian from 1984 through 1987.

In 1969 Tillie became a sales representative and won three times in annual state contests. She is still very active in sales. She also served on the Entertainment Committee and is now on the Remunerations Committee.

When a member of the Birthday Club, she was vice president in 1971 and 1972.

Tillie was active in district and was youth counselor from 1964 through 1966. She was district secretary for seven years from 1970 through 1976.

She was the first woman to be District V President, serving from 1981 to 1984 and again in 1987 and 1988. At meetings she presented plays she wrote and had contests and displays of paintings, quilts and handiwork.

She was the district representative on the Supreme Lodge By - Law Committee, 1984 through 1988, and a delegate to the past six state conventions. She was convention secretary in 1968 and again in 1972.

Tillie also belongs to the Garden Oaks Civic Club, the Czech Ex Student Association of Texas, the Western Fraternal Association Lodge 289, and RVOS Lodge Houston 108.

Her pride and joy is her grandson, Brooks Krejci Eubank, and her daughter, Jeannette Eubank, and her husband, Robert.

Tillie has enjoyed the SPJST and thinks it is a great organization. She is especially proud of all the SPJST does for our fine youth!

The first meeting of the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club of Lodge No. 88, Houston, Texas for 1990 was held on Monday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.

The following were elected to serve as officers for 1990: President -Marceil Malak, Vice President -- Ted Lapesh, Secretary - Treasurer -Rosalee Kostom, Czech Director -Zdena Pomeroy, English Director -- Lil Holly, Telephone Committee -- Estelle Kelly and Publicity Chairman -- Bill Malina.

The club is preparing to present two plays in 1990, one in English and one in Czech. Watch the Vestnik for further announcements.

The Czech actors are willing to perform their Czech play at other locations after they present it at Lodge No. 88. It is essential that plans for all repeat performances be made as soon as possible.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The fall semester of the 1989 Czech classes held at SPJST Lodge No. 92 (National Hall), 3316 Roberts Cut - Off in Fort Worth ended on Thursday, December 14th. We had a nice group of students.

Our next six - week course session will begin Thursday, January 25th and end on Thursday, March 1st which will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

If anyone would like to register for this Czech course, you may do so at TCJC (downtown) or at the Northwest Campus. The registration fee will be $40.

Now, I would like to share an experience that my wife and I enjoyed over the weekend during January 4th and January 8th.

We left Fort Worth Thursday morning, January 4th for Center Point, Texas which is in Hill Country about 10 miles from Kerrville to go deer hunting.

After we arrived at Center Point in the evening, we visited our friends and then in the morning before daylight, I went into the woods and didn't see anything so after breakfast, Merel and I went back into the woods. We stayed in the pasture until noon with no luck. After lunch I went and stayed until dark; only saw one that waved his flag at me and disappeared into the brush.

I've been going to this place for 40 years and always saw about 30 or more deer but now, the fire ants are killing the wild life, also drought and hard freeze has an effect on wild life as well.

Then Saturday morning it was raining so that was the end of hunting.

However, the rain is very much needed in that area.

We left and stopped in Fredericksburg to shop and also went through the Nimitz Museum which is very interesting. The*, we got a motel and spent the night.

Next morning (Sunday) was a

beautiful day the rain had stopped and after eating breakfast, we were homeward bound.

Now, we decided to stop at Blanco which is 14 or 15 miles south of Johhson City. There is a monastery that has an Icon of the Virgin Mary, which has been weeping from time - to - time since about 1981 that we were happily surprised to get to see it.

When we arrived, a monk met us and said, "You are just in time for the services, they are now starting." They go by the Julian calendar which was their Christmas Day. Monastic services are a little longer than ours and, being Christmas, made the service even longer.

A Bishop celebrated the Liturgy, assisted by a priest and monks.

During the sermon, the Bishop announced that those who wish to may go see the Icon of the Virgin Mary which is in the old chapel. The Icon sometimes weeps tears like human tears; other times the tears are Myrrh.

After we entered the chapel, the monk gave us a short talk about the Icon, then opened the glass case that the Icon is kept in so we could venerate it.

The Icon was damp with Myrrh as though the Virgin Mary had been weeping that morning. The monk anointed each one of us with the Myrrh.

The Bishop invited all of us to stay for Christmas dinner and party which consisted of singing carols, having dessert and coffee plus exchange of gifts; the food was all home - cooked and delicious.

There were people from Austin, Houston, San Antonio and, of course, Fort Worth; also Oklahoma, Illinois, Missouri and Vermont.

It was the most wonderful Christmas we've ever enjoyed, we stayed for the evening vespers.

Then, we decided not to travel at night so we stayed in Blanco in a motel.

Next morning, we ate the best breakfast we've ever eaten while on the road.

After breakfast we were back on the road again, which was a beautiful day, nice sunshine and cool for a pleasurable traveling and we made it home safely.

Now, it's time to close.

Classes At Westchester Education Center, Houston Czech

The fall semester - 1989 Czech classes held at the Westchester Education Center, Houston ended on Thursday evening, December 7th with a puppet show conducted by Jan Schroif. Assisting him with the manipulation of the puppets and dialogue in the Czech language were Karel Sicner, Ted LaPesh and Zdenica Pomeroy.

All students and guests enjoyed the puppet performance and also a one hour slide show of the 1985 Spartakiada in Prague by Charles Heyda, Czech class instructor.

Plans have been completed for the resumption of Czech classes in the spring 1990 semester which will start Tuesday, February 13 for the beginners class and Thursday, February 15 for the advanced class.

Gasses will be held as heretofore from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and will continue for 12 weeks.

While at Stanford, Ron was awarded the Prestigious H.D. Smith Scholarship by the American Society of Mining Engineers, awarded annually to the top student in mining engineering.

His dissertation work, "A Semianalytical Thermal Model for Linear Steam Drive," will be presented at the Enhanced Oil Recovery Symposium in Tulsa, Oklahoma in April.

While at Stanford, Ron and Peggy were blessed with a daughter, Katie.

Gajdica has recently started work with ARCO Oil and Gas in Plano as a senior research engineer and currently lives in north Plano.

Ron is the son of Laddie and Helen Gajdica, and Peggy is the daughter of Joseph and Peggy Bell, all of Plano.

The Gajdicas are SPJST members of Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, January 17 at Rains Seale Chapel with military graveside service in the Protestant Cemetery in Rowena. The Rev. Wilford Gore officiated.

He was born on October 24, 1919 in Rowena. He was married to Alexia Piel December 1944 in Lampasas. He was a farmer and rancher. He was discharged May 4, 1.946 from the U.S. Army, Company "B," 142 Infantry Regiment after fighting in World War II. He was a Presbyterian.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Hovorak, and his sister, Mary Hite.

Gajdica Earns PhD From Stanford Debbie Docekal

Docekal Receives BFA Degree Miss Docekal received a Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography from the University of North Texas in Denton.

Her minor was in Journalism with a concentration in Advertising.

Debbie was a founding member of the national fraternity Kappa Kappa Gamma at UNT. She is hoping to continue her interest in photography yet she will be looking into a career in Computer Graphics or Desktop Publishing and may even find something that incorporates photography.

After high school, Debbie went to University of Texas (Austin) for three semesters, then she transferred to Richland Junior College and took her first photo class. Since she knew UNT has a very good Art Department, she transferred there in the fall of 1986.

Miss Docekal went to Europe for 51/2 weeks in the summer of 1986 with the UNT Studies Abroad Program.

Receiving six hours of credit in watercolor and drawing, they traveled through all of Switzerland.

They took trips to London, Paris, Florence and Venice.

Last summer she went to Penland School of Arts and Crafts in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

Debbie spent the holidays with her family and has moved to San Diego for a while to see what type of job opportunities are available.

Mr. Gajdica, a native of Plano, has recently completed the petroleum engineering PhD program at Stanford University.

Ron was the 1979 PSHS Class Valedictorian, Most Likely To Succeed, and selected to Who's Who in American High Schools. He was National Honor Society president, a member of the Student Council, a starter on the varsity soccer team, and president of the St. Mark Catholic Church Youth Group.

Gajdica also received the Major P Award for being the top student in Science and went to State in the UIL Science Competition.

After high school, Ron attended Texas A&M University and in 1983 received his Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering. He earned Magna Gun Laude honors with a 3.9 GPA and graduated first in his class.

Ron was selected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and was a member of many honor fraternities including Tau Beta Pi, Pi Epsilon Tau, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Mortar Board, and Tau Kappa.

After graduation, Ron accepted a job with Tenneco Oil Company in Lafayette, Louisiana. He worked there for two years as a petroleum reservoir engineer on offshore oil and gas reservoirs.

While in Lafayette, Ron coached boys' soccer and was active in his church as the youth commissioner and choir director.

Ron then secured an educational leave of absence to do graduate work at Texas A&M. He earned his Masters of Science in petroleum engineering in 1986. He once again graduated first in his class with a 4.0 GPA. The title of his dissertation was "The Construction and Use of Aquifer Influence Functions to Predict Future Performance and Determine Original Gas in Place."

The work was later published in the Society of Petroleum Engineers Reservoir Engineering Journal and two other journals.

While in the masters' program, he married a Plano resident, Peggy Bell, PSHS Class of 1980.

After leaving Texas A&M, the Gajdicas moved to California where Ron entered PhD program at Stanford University. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in petroleum engineering in 1989 with a 3.9 GPA.

Monsignor Botik Honored On 45th Ordination

Brother William A. Botik went to study for priesthood in 1944 at San Antonio, Texas and studied there until he was ordained but, since the war was going on, he was ordained in December.

He officiated at his first Mass in Fort Worth, then was sent to Valley View, Hillsboro, Ennis, Fort Worth and now, he is at Christ the King in Dallas.

Monsignor William A. Botik is a 50 year SPJST member of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth. His two brothers, Charlie Botik of Fort Worth and Joe Botik of Lubbock are also members of our lodge. His father, Joe Botik, Sr., was a past president of Lodge No. 92.

Besides his two living brothers, he also had three cousins, Mary Z. Pulliam, Sophie Z. Blazek and Carl W. Zich, plus several nieces and nephews.

In his young day, the honoree was Willie Botik who worked with the construction and building of our National Hall., he carried mortar brick in 1938.

All of us are very proud of Monsignor Botik who is serving as Chaplin for KJT and KJZT and we wish him blessful success.

As editor of the Sokol Gymnast, I have the honor on occasion of introducing to the membership around the country some of the notable leaders of our organization. It gives me great pleasure introducing Brother Jerry Milan of the Southern District, and a member of Sokol Fort Worth.

My friendship with Brother Milan started a few decades ago when as budding gymnasts in the senior men's class, we competed against each othei at National Sokol Slets.

Brother Milan has been a member of Sokol for over 50 years and came from a dedicated Sokol family who played an important role in the formation of the new Sokol Fort Worth.

Graduating from the University of Texas (Austin) in 1958, Jerry pursued a professional career in Physical Education. While devoting a lifetime to molding young people in the public school system of Fort Worth, he also taught young gymnasts in the Sokol program.

He recently retired from teaching after 30 years of teaching and coaching. He belongs to many organizations, and made strong contributions to many of them. This list of organizations is so great in number its too numerous to mention.

He was a charter member of the Gymnastic Teachers Association of Texas, and served as their president, and now is an honorary life member and with his brother, Emil, played an

important role in the formation of this organization.

Jerry has devoted many years to the United States Gymnastic Federation organization in many capacities; as a professional member, volunteer, officer, delegate, member of the United States Olympic Committee, and one of the first coaches in this country to be certified by the United States Gymnastic Safety Association.

He also is a charter member of the Texas Gymnastic Judges Association.

Jerry not only has been involved in his own Sokol unit and district in many capacities, but he has held national offices in the American Sokol Organization, as chairman of the national school board, chairman of the By - Laws Committee, past physical director of the Southern District, and currently serving as educational and public relations director. In addition he also is a member of the Sokol Manual Revision Committee. This Manuel Committee has been working closely these past few years with our sister organization Sokol USA (Slovak Sokols) to revise and update the Sokol manual.

Over the years Brother Milan has served the American Sokol Organization by conducting many clinics, and workshops, also directing both district and national instructors' courses. If there is any position, duty or responsibility in the ASO, then it is very likely that Brother Milan has held that position.

Brother Milan also devoted with distinction many years of service on a voluntary basis to the USGF at several Olympic games, including Mexico (1968), Munich (1972), PanAm Games (1975), Montreal (1976), World Games in Fort Worth (1978), Los Angeles (1984), Indianapolis (1987); while also attending the Spartakiada in Prague in 1980, Gymnastrada in Zurich in 1982, and Herning, Denmark (1987) and Sokol International Slets in Vienna, Austria in 1972 and 1982.

Over the years Brother Milan has faithfully attended all USGF Congresses, where other Sokol brothers and sisters also met to enhance their backgrounds, stay abreast with changes around the world, and rekindle Sokol friendships and make new acquaintances with other groups and individuals.

It was in 1987 that for these many years of distinguished service, Jerry along with Sister Norma Zabka of the Eastern District, and his Brother Emil Milan, received the very coveted :service awards of the USGF, and brought great honor upon the

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 24, 1990 American Sokol Organization. This distinguished service award was presented at the USGF Congress in St. Louis, Missouri and it was fitting that this award was presented in St. Louis, Missouri for this was the birthplace of Sokol in North America.

Over the years Jerry has been instrumental as either the director, coordinator or consultant in the staging of national and world class meets, including the PanAm Games, Olympics, International Invitationals, World Games, and others sponsored by the President's Council on Fitness and Private Enterprise meets sponsored by Coca Cola, Quaker Oats, Dial Soup, Dodge Auto and many others.

Probably one of his most outstanding and rewarding contributions, was to put together the undertaking of a magnanimous task of representing the United States by taking a delegation of Sokols mostly from the Southern District to the Gymnastrada at Herning, Denmark.

This huge undertaking though logistically and financially overwhelming proved to be a challenge for Brother Milan, and through his leadership it became a once - a - lifetime experience and a memorable trip for all those who attended. This indelible experience turned out to be a great success and, (pun not intended) a feather in the cap of all Sokols.

I could go on and on to quote and cite the many anecdotes and stories that many of us can tell about and through our association with Brother Milan, but it would be fitting for you to make it to one of the next gathering of Sokols (Slet), for you will find him there and get to meet him for yourself.

He has, by his example, passed on to all those who follow everything that he has derived from his great organizations and all the principles and philosophies of the teachings of Miroslav Tyrs, our founder.

Brother Milan is a shining example of what Sokol is all about dedication, discipline, integrity, honesty, humbleness, humility and most of all understanding, not quick to judge, and a generous abundance of good old - fashioned sense of humor. We salute you Brother Milan. Zdar, Zdar, Zdar; a true SOKOL CHAMPION! *** Brother Jerry Milan is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 154 since 1946. He has served as president since the early 1960s. He also has been District III president, attended several SPJST Conventions and serves on their By Laws Committee for his fourth term.

Body Rhythms: The Association of Professional Sleep Societies -- an organization of sleep researchers -recently reviewed data on about 6,000 one - and two - vehicle accidents. They fell into a time pattern with a major peak between midnight and 7 a.m. and a second peak in the daytime between 1 and 4 p.m. Our daily body rhythms make us more likely to feel sleepy at these times even if we're not lacking in sleep.

Alcohol and Street Drugs: Not only does alcohol impair judgment and reflexes, but even small doses can increase people's basic levels of sleepiness, particularly if they are somewhat sleepy to begin with. And having consumed alcohol, drivers are less likely to recognize their own fatigue. Most street drugs have similar effects.

Essential Medications: Unfortunately, many over - the counter and prescription medications trigger daytime sleepiness as well.

Although warned by physicians and pharmacists not to drive when taking certain medications, patients don't always heed the warnings.

These are some signs of driver fatigue: Difficulties in focusing; increase in blinking or even closing the eyes for a second; narrowing of the field of vision.

Drifting to either side of the road.

Taking longer than normal to react to a dangerous driving situation.

Failing to scan the roadway and mirrors -- looking only on one side of the road or straight ahead.

Not remembering the previous few miles of the trip.

Helpful Hints: Before you leave to drive anywhere -- but especially on a long trip -- consider these helpful hints: Pull over and take a safety break, then drive alert.

Let someone else drive for awhile, if possible.

Set reasonable travel objectives.

Make up for any sleep you may have lost prior to driving.

Avoid alcohol, even the night before driving. Effects of alcohol can take a long time to wear off.

It's almost impossible for a normal person to fall asleep at the wheel without any warning . The problem is that people continue to drive when they know they're sleepy.

If sleepiness is a persistent problem, it may be signalling a sleep disorder that requires medical attention. Sleep disorder experts can now successfully treat many people who come for help.

Records' Book Available

Center, a national non - profit consumer group, found there was little uniformity on where the records were available and the costs. In some states, birth records are kept by the city and in others by the county or state. To further complicate matters, often older records are held in different places than current ones. In addition, the addresses where the records are kept are changed quite often.

The consumer group found many people had difficulty in locating the records they needed. Often, it was necessary to make expensive long distance calls just to find out where to write, what information was required and how much money to send. For that reason CERC has published a book entitled "Where To Write For Vital Records" which contains a state - by state listing of the addresses and telephone numbers of the archive where each record can be found, the cost of a copy of the document and sample form letters containing all the information needed to get these and other vital documents.

CERC has just released the 1989 update. For those needing information from foreign countries, the book contains a list of government offices where one can get help in locating vital records kept in almost every country. Even U.S. citizens born overseas, on a ship or aircraft can locate the place where their records are kept.

The organization found that many people have used previous editions to locate their family trees or roots. For those, the book includes information on the Family History Library of the Mormon Church. This library contains over 200,000 volumes of family history records and a list of almost a quarter million people who are willing to share information to help persons find their family roots.

Robert L. Berko, executive director of CERC, says that originally the book was published to satisfy the needs of persons applying for various benefits but many others have found it useful.

He has received letters from libraries, coroners, law enforcement, social agencies, credit grantors, collection agencies, stock ownership tracers, lawyers, persons searching for missing heirs, and even those interested in searching their family roots. All these and others have found use for a book that helps them locate and prove the status of individuals.

Many times documents can be used to prove things other than what they record. For instance, one woman wrote to the group telling them that a birth certificate for her child proved her residence at that time in the United States and helped her become eligible for legal residence and citizenship.

In this age of bureaucratic documentation, everyone has need of copies of records of birth, death, marriage or divorce. An application for benefits from the Veterans Administration or Social Security, a passport, or marriage license requires not only the information in the records but usually copies of the records themselves.

All these records are stored permanently by municipalities, counties, states and the federal government. Everyone knows this, but where each document is kept is frequently unknown.

PMI adds about $200 to $300 a year to payments.

Under the new rules, you can cancel PMI after five years, down from the previous seven, if your home's value has risen so that your equity equals at least 20 percent of the original loan and you've made timely payments.

People who hit the 20 percent mark by improving their homes or prepaying principal can drop PMI after only two years. To prove that your home has appreciated enough to qualify, you need an appraisal, costing about $200.

The Federal National Mortgage Association, with over 12 percent of home loans, lets borrowers drop PMI only one year if they have 20 percent or more in equity. Homeowners with Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans generally are prohibited from dropping the insurance. Setkal jsem se s nimi nahodou pfi jejich ceste do Ceskoslovenska v minulch dvou letech. Pfijal jsem jejich pozvani a zastavil se zde na nekolik dnir. Pfi teto pfilditosti se mne dostaly do rukou Vage noviny, ktere jsem s velkSrm zajmem proeetl. Protok ji g nerad neco odkladam, rozhodl jsem se, 2e Vam ihned napigi. Velmi mne potegilo a valim si Vagi snahy po udrIeni narodniho citeni. Uvedomime-li si, k je to ji2 nekolikata generace odva2nSrch pfedlcu z Cech a Moravy, pak to zasluhuje zvlagtniho oceneni. Navic uplynul*ch vice nee 40 let u nas v Ceskoslovensku bylo poznamenano nepochopitelne gpatiVm vztahem k nagim krajanum a emigranturn.

Protok se koneene situace podstatne zmenila, domnivam se, k to povede k prohloubeni kontaktir a vzajemne spolupraci.

Setkal jsem se zde v Texasu s celou fadou krajaml a chtel bych i touto cestou jim podekovat za jejich laskavost, pohostinnost a peel kterou mne venovali. Nechci zfrstat dlu2nikem, a stejne jako v minu1S7ch letech pfi navgtevach krajanir z Texasu, rad pro ne pfipravim zajimav y' program u nas a pomotm usnadnit jejich pobyt v Ceskoslovensku. Nejeden z nagich krajaml hleda sve pfibuzne nebo mista, odkud prarodiei, z Moravy ei Cech prijeli.

Rad pomohu zjistit v archivech a matrikach Odaje o jejich prapfedcich a rodinach. i nekdo dal gi tyto problemy, necht' se na mne obrati.

Mohu te2 nabidnout neformalni spolupraci pfi ev. cestach do Ceskoslovenska at' jig prostfednictvim cestovnich kancelafi, nebo pfipadne formou vSrmeny. Cela fada n.4/ch pfatel ochotne pfijme krajany eventulne je mozno zajistit i pobyty v letnich taborech pro mlade2, a deelem prohloubeni znalosti jazyka 'deskeho a navazani bliZhich kontaktit. A ted' neco jineho, jestli vas to bude zajimat, pokusim se napsat o nagem honu na jeleny. Bylo to ve etvrtek 4. ledna, kdy2 jsme vyjeli z Fort Worth, jedeme cestou do Center Point, Texas.

To jest asi deset mil od Kerrville.

Dojeli jsme tarn a.2 pozde odpoledne.

Tak jsme se tam s pfateli pobavili, pak jsme se gli vyspat.

Jd jsem rano za tmy gel do lesa a vratil jsem se a2 v osm hodin.

Manielka byla ji2 vzharu. Tak jsme posnidali a oba jsme se obebrali zase do lesa. Tarn jsme byli dopoledne a pfigli zase na obed.

Potom ja jsem stravil cele opoledne al do veeera v lese a videl jsme jenom jednoho jelena, ktery na mne jenom kkvnul baj, baj a zmizel v kfovi.

Po pet a etyficet let jsem tam jezdil na jeleny a ka.24 rok jsem vide' tficet a nebo vice jelentl a letos jenom jednoho.

Mail tam mnoho ohniqch mravenct a ti nici divokou zvef. Take je tam velke sucho a pled vanocemi tam meli tuhou zimu. Tak 2e i oyes vymrzl. Tak ted' okkavaji, 2e mnoho jelenti zahyne. V sobotu zaealo pr get a prgelo ceUr den. Tak bylo po hone.

Potom jsme odjeli do Frederickburgu a prohledli si presto a Nimitzovo museum. Bylo to zajimave.

Pfenocovali jsme tam a rano po snidani jsme se dali na cestu dome. Jig bylo po degti. Slunce pane svitilo a bylo chladno. Tak se jelo dobfe.

Na ceste patnact mil na vS7chod od Frederickburgu jsme zaboeili doprava a tak jsme jeli na ceste do Blanco. Tam maji klagter, jsou tarn mni gi, jedna novicka, knez a biskup. Pfijeli jsme prave v eas na bohoslu2by. A to na vanoeni, nebot' oni se fidi podle starer° kalendafe. Jeden mnih nas pfivital a fikal, "Jste prave yeas; budeme zacinat bohoslulby ihned."

Bylo to krasne.

Po bohoslunach, biskup oznamil, abychom se gli podivat na obraz Panny Marie," kter)"7 slzi nebo pia& v nekterem ease a take nas pozval na vanoeni obed, potom na zakusky a vSrmenu darkti. To bylo zase v jine budove.

Ten obraz Panny Marie je v jine kapli a je zask,lenSr. Jeden mnich nam dal kralkou pfedna gku a otevfel to abychom uctili Pannu Marii.

Mela vlhke tvafe jakoby SIzila prave to rano. Bylo to myrha. Nedky jsou to slzy jako lidske a zase 'lady je to myrha. Tak ten mnich namoeil bavinu do te myrhy a nas pokfi2oval. Bylo to velmi dojemne a velmi krasne.

Potom jsme hi na ten obed. Byl velice dobrST. A pak do knihovny na qmenu darkil. Tam jsme zpivali koledy a pak vymenili darky. Take jsme si dobfe pochutnali tech zakuskach.

To bylo neco zvlagtniho, nebot' takovS7ch chutnSrch veci jsem je gte nejdl. Vgecko bylo tam plipraveno.

Lide tam byli z Austinu, Houstonu, San Antonia a z Fort Worth, take jinS7ch state jako z Oklahomy, Missouri, Illinois a Vermont. A tak nam 'eas utekl. Den se ch3'711 k veeeru.

Tak jsme se rozhodli, k nepojedeme domil v noci. Tak jsem tam byli na veeernich bohosltabach.

Potom se zastavili v motelu v Blanco a tam pfenocovali. Rano jsme posnidali v Blanco a to bylo zase asi to nejlepgi snidani, co jsme jedli na svS7ch cestach. Den byl zase krasn9 . , slunnr a nebylo moc zima. Tak se 'pane jelo dornd do Fort Worth. Dojeli jsme domii a2 po poledni. Tak je zase teplo a sucho.

A consumer law that takes effect in March will eliminate some of the rate and payment hikes that can broadside homeowners who have such loans. The law, passed last ·month, forbids a lender to change the interest - rate formula, repayment schedule or loan amount once an agreement has been signed. And, before the signing, lenders must fully explain "teaser" initial rates, future rate changes, interest ceilings and repayment options. Even such disclosures won't abolish all booby traps. A lender still will be able to offer variable rates that may fluctuate wildly, balloon loans in which monthly paymtlntsare followed by a lump - sum payment of the balance, and negative amortization that sees the unpaid balance rise even when you make payments.
