Santa Joins SPJST When Santa Claus arrived at the Christmas Party held recently at Lodge 88, Houston.' SPJST Sales Representatives (L to R): Tillie Helmcamp, Pearl Hanka, l.owrina Iindemann and Louise Kadlecek did not pass up the opportunityto see that Santa becomes an SPJST brother!

When Santa mentioned that he did not need any life insurance, Tillie reminded him that it can be dangerous to be without coverage, even if you leave home only one night a year!

Pearl mentioned that once Santa's certificate is issued, no one will ever be able to take the coverage away from him. "That is wonderful! But what about the return on my investment if I live?" asked Santa. The meeting adjourned and Santa Claus then arrived to the sounds of Christmas songs. Santa visited with everyone and each received a peppermint stick candy cane. Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 met for their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, December 3, 1989 in conjunction with their Christmas Party.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and we remained standing for a minute of silence in memory of members, Josie Leshikar and Adele Simcik.

We, then, had roll call of officers and the minutes were read.

Correspondence was read from the Brethren Church thanking our lodge for using the hall facilities for the Brethren Church supper and also a letter was read from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, Texas thanking our lodge for donating $316to apply to purchase a video recorder at the rest home.

We had one new applicant, namely, Annie Leshikar.

The slate of officers elected last month was read and Edwin Adamek installed the officers.

The youth club presented their program and Santa Claus arrived and distributed fruit and candy.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 14, 1990 at 4 p.m. See you then!

Seaton Mid-Winter Tarok Tournament On Saturday, January 13, lodge 47

Seaton Star Hall willsponsor their first annual Tarok Tournament.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with play starting at 9:30a.m. The fee for entering the tournament is $10.00 per person and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

TI1e public is invited to participate.

Tarok is a card game brought to the United States by Czech immigrants around the 1800s. The game lost

interest as many of the second generation children did not learn to play. In order for this card game not to vanish, the SPJST is reviving the game with tournaments such as the one being held at Seaton. The game consists of 54 colorfully designed cards and played similar to hearts.

Anyoneinterested in learning to play the game should contact their nearest SPJST Lodge, The SPJST annually sponsors a State Tarok Tournament for its members. The 5th annual SPJST Tarok Tournament will be held at lodge 29, Taylor on March 3, 1990.

Lodge No. 87, Temple President I.adis Navratil called the Christmas meeting to order December 8th at 6:30 p.m.

Flag Bearer Ed Reisner led the lodge in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made and secondedto dispense with the business meeting.

Georgia Navratil was called on to give the blessing.

A covered dish meal was served to members and guests.

Georgia Navratil and Dorothy Chervenka had charge of handing out gifts in the gift exchange.

Members and guests sang Christmas carols following the gift exchange.

We enjoyed the presence of a very special little boy at this Christmas meeting; his name is George Hopper, son of James and linda Hopper and grandson of Sidney and Dorothy Kacir. He applauded all of the singing of carols and was our little "ray of sunshine" with his beautiful smile and laughter.

Guests for the evening were Jarrod Jimenez and Millie Schiller, also Sidney and Dorothy Kacir from State Headquarters.

Thanks to members for the delicious covered dishes of food and those who served as hosts and hostesses throughout the calendar year 1989.

President Navratil expressed his thanks to all and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Get well wishes are extended to all who are convalescing.

The December and annual meeting of Lodge 172 was held December 27th at 7:30 p.m., welcomed in the Czech language by President Alvin Sefcik and the Pledge of Allegiance by 1st Vice President Irving Theiss. The order of business followed.

Correspondence was read by Secretary Lillia Mae Peter, also minutes of the last meeting and executive meeting.

Academy Lodge Officers Installed Among the highlights of this year's Christmas Party at Lodge 177 Academy was the installation of officers conducted by Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard M. Gebala.

Czech Classes At Westchester Education Center, Houston

The fall semester - 1989 Czech classes held at the Westchester Education Center, Houston ended on Thursday evening, December 7th with a puppet show conducted by Jan Schroif. Assisting him with the manipulation of the puppets and dialog in the Czech language were Karel Sicner, Ted laPesh and Z.denka Pomeroy.

All students and guests enjoyed the puppet performance and also a one hour slide show of the 1985 Spartakiada in Prague by Charles Heyda, Czech class instructor.

Plans have been completed for the resumption of Czech classes in the spring 1990 semester which will start Tuesday, February 13 for the beginners class and Thursday, February 15 for the advanced class.

Lodge 47 Seaton Celebrates Christmas Dear Members: I would like to thank all the members of our Seaton Youth Club for the fantastic Christmas program presented this year. You all are to be commended.

Our program began with a candlelight memorial service in memory of the 20 deceased members this past year. Lodge 47 FAC Tim Reese led us in a very inspiring message. Memorial candles were lit in memory of Dorothy Bedrich, Ted Blankenship, Jean Butler, Frances Coufal, Agnes De Palma, Joe Divis, Arnold Dubcak, James Macek, Louise Marek, Ludmilla Maresh, Leslie Mesecke, John Schneider, Binnie Simek, Bertha Simek, Charles Sirney and lester Williams.

Memorial candles were also lit for Phyliss Billeck, Johnny Kovar, Dorothy Morris and Jerry Pechal by their grandchildren.

Our program continued with the MC of Youth Club President Jason Reese.

A skit of "The First Christmas" was presented by several members.

A token of appreciation was presented to Charles Mikeska by Vice President E.J. Pechal and other youth club band members for his time helping with the band.

The program then continued on with "Mrs. Santa's Christmas Present."

The play including Santa, Mrs. Claus and the 6 Elves was enjoyed by all.

Concluding our program was a stage full of youngsters awaiting Santa and HE DID ARRIVE! Santa, we thank you for coming to visit with us.

I hope each of you in attendance enjoyed the program. Thanks to all of you who helped out in so many ways.

Lodge No. 88 Flagbearers Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl, along with Youth Club Member Michelle Linney, were asked to report on the past year, too.

DYC Marie Stayton told the membership in her report of the District IV DYC Susan Bohnenberger benefit dance. which was held the previous evening at our lodge and thanked them for their generosity and support which allowed for the success ofthe dance. She alsohaďa box set up at the meeting for donations from the . members.

Youth leader Barbara Linney then reported on some of the highlights of the past year for our youth club.

As the reports concluded, we went on with the annual meeting. Soon, we had a break- for lunch, but were MRS. CIAUS CHRIS~ PRESENT. quickly back in the ballroom to resume business.

During the meeting, some of the youth who attended made fruit bags which were to be distributed to the members and guests at the Youth Club's Christmas Program.

As with every annual meeting, we held elections. First came election of officers.

Youth leader Barbara Linney was once again re - elected youth leader for another year.

For the position of Lodge No. 88 flagbearers, four youth club members accepted the nominations, namely, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl and Michelle Linney. Re - elected were Flagbearers Marlene Migl and Darlene Migl with the addition of a third elected flagbearer, Crystal Wallace.

AWAmNG SANTA'S ARRIVAL When all officers and members of the Board of Trustees were elected, the meeting was adjourned.

We will have installation of officers and board members at our January 1990 monthly lodge meeting.

Congratulations to all of the newly elected officials of Lodge No. 88.

The following night, December 11, 1989, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Lodge No. 88 held their Christmas program. The lodge was decorated with lights, tinsel and, of course, who could forget the beautiful Christmas tree brought to us by Mr. and Mrs. R. YOUIH CWB OFFICIAi.S AND IEADERS Havemann and decorated by the youth; it sat in the lodge building foyer.

We had our regular meeting December 7, 1989 and talked about our plans for Christmas and our Christmas projects. We decided to go to the nursing homes caroling on December 16, 1989 at Eden Nursing Home; also on December 21, 1989 we sang at Kirkwood Manor Nursing Home.

The lodge 185 Christmas Party was held on December 28, 1989 at Bavarian Village. We sang for the members and guests. After supper, there was a gift exchange forthe youth club. Everyone had a real good time.

who died in a Temple nursing home.

Services for Hilda Elizabeth Kosel, 88, of Temple were held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, December 19 at St. Mary's CatholicChurch with the Rev. Arthur Michalkaofficiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Cyclone.

Bornin Cyclone, she was a resident of the area for most of her life. She married Edmund Kosel and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone,and of the Altar Societies of both churches. She moved to Temple twenty years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1947; one son, Walter in 1984, and by her parents, six brothers and four sisters.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Pfeiffer of Temple; a son, Monroe Kosel of Temple and four grandchildren.

A rosary was recited Monday night at Harper - Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

Vážení a milí přátelé krajané!

Letos se již podruhé obracíme na vás s pozdravem ze staré vlasti, která prožívá významnésložité období svých dějin.

Obracíme se na vás s výzvou, že máme upřímný zájem na dalším rozvíjení a rozšíření spolupráce se všemi, kteří mají vlastenecký vztah ke své staré vlasti.

Chceme opět zdůraznit, že Československý ústav zahraniční od svého založení v roce 1928 vždy stál a stojí na straně našich národů a pracujících, na platformě spolupráce se všemi krajany, kteří odešli ze své vlasti v různých obdobích. Čs. ústav zahraniční jako samostatná nezávisláorganizace, která je založena na dobrovolném kolektivním a individuálním členství čs. občanů, závodů, institucí a školských zařízení, znovu prohlašuje, že stojí na pozicích všeobecně humanistických, zajímajících převážnou většinu lidstva.

Jsme přesvědčeni,že současnou čin­ nost a další záměry Čs. ústavu zahraničního podporují ve vlasti vašich předků všichni, kteří si uvědomují velký význam tradic i současnou práci čs. krajanského hnutí.

Zvlášť významným faktem je působení našich umělců, ať již profe­ sionálů, nebo amaterů, na kulturní čin­ nosti mezi našimi krajany prostřed­ nictvím Čs. ústavu zahraničního. Čs. ústav zahraniční, který se přihlásil při svém osamostatnění k demokratickému proudu v další čin­ nosti hodlá rozšířit spolupráci s dalšími organizacemikrajanů a redakcemi kra­ janských časopisů, se kterými dosud nespolupracujeme, a kteří o spolupráci s Čs. ústavem zahraničním projeví zájem.

Kromě již tradičních forem spolupráce se Čs. ústav zahraniční nabízí zprostředkovávat spolupráci v ekonomické a vědeckotechnické oblasti, na které by se naši krajané, podnikatelé, technická a humanitní in­ teligence mohli podílet.

Nezanedbatelnou složkou je také výuka českého a slovenského jazyka prostřednictvím čs. ústavu zahraničního na předních univerzitách v ČSSR. Vhodným prostředkem ke spolupráci čs. úslavu zahraničního a krajanských organizací by mohlo být uzavření dohod o spolupráci podle zájmů a potřeb krajanů.

Vytvořily se podmínky pro pro­ hloubení a rozšíření spolupráce s čs. ústavem zahraničním, Českosloven­ skou socialistickourepublikou, krajan­ ským hnutím,' které budou sloužit humánním cílům, nastolení mírových vztahů a darozuměni mezi národy.

Čs. ústav zahraniční vyzývá ke spolupráci přes různe názory a zájmy krajanské hnutí a jednotlivce k podpoře své vlasti pro blaho českého a slovenského národa. čs. ústav zahraniční věren svým tradicím bude podporovat krajanské hnutí ve světě.

Jedenadvacatý kurs češtiny v Aliefu.

Aliefská večerní škola v jihozápadním Houstonu má v polovině ledna 1990 na programu další, již . jedenadvacatý, kurs hovorové češtiny.

Toto vyučování rozdělené na dvě skupiny bude opět zaměřeno na jed­ noduchou konversaci navazující na základy gramatiky potřebné k tomuto cíli. Lekce budou opět jednou týdně, ve čtvrtek, od 6:30 do 9 hod. večer; tento 12 týdenní kurs začne 18. ledna a skončí 5. dubna. Školné je pouze 40 dolarů což je méně než tři a půl dolaru za dvě a půl hodiny výuky české řeči!

Zájemci se mohou zapsat buď osobně ve dnech 11. a 12. ledna od 6:30 do 8:30 večer v jídelně školy Hastings South, u které se nachází kancelář Aliefské večerní školy, anebo učinit zaprs poštou.

V případě nepředvídanýchokolností je možné též se zapsat ve čtvrtek večer, 18. ledna, před začátkem prvního vyučování.

Mimochodem: Aliefská večerní škola se tu v Houstonu nachází jižně od křižovatky ulic Cook Road a North Star Drive, mezi známými hlavnějšími ulicemi Bellaire Blvd a Alief-Clodine.

Post Scriptum: Vyučování češtiny a studie české řeči jsou nezbytné k zachování našeho národního dědictví zde v Texasu na jihu Spojených států, jelikož takto se stanou všichni českoameričtí studenti těchto kursů mnohem více etnicky uvědomělí.

Nynější i dřívější studenti češtinyspolu s jinými etnicky uvědomělímia češtiny znalými krajany pak zpomalí ustavičné odnárodňování a nedopustí aby česká mluva se stala za pětadvacet let či za půl století zde v Texasu mrtvým jazykem, končícím v muzeu.

"Kolik řečí znáš, tolikrát jsi člověkem" je pravdivé přísloví jak v češtině tak i v celé řadě jiných jazyků, poněvadž znalost jiných řečí je všeobecně známou výhodou jak v soukromém tak ve veřejmném životě.

Další plus studia češtinyje následující: Čeština je západoslovanský jazyk patřící do rodiny slovanských jazyků, která je největší skupinou sobě příbuzných jazyků na evropském kon-

tinentu. Z tohoto důvodu je tedy učení se česky rovněž velmi výhodné, jelikož znalost českého jazyka pak značně usnadní studia dalších slovanských řečí.

"Loquendo discitur lo qui" ("Mluvením se člověk učí jak mluvit" -- neboli v našem případě -- mluvením či používáním české řeči člověk se nadále učí ji znát a ctít) je důležité heslo jak pro studenty češtiny tak pro každého z nás, kdo se opravdu hlásí k rodné krvi.

Proč lidé zívaií?

Riká se, že zívání je nakažlivé. Nelze tu ovšem mluvit o nějaké nákaze v pravém slo­ va smuslu jako u infekčních chorob. Je to spí­ še napodobovací pud, kdy bezdečně začneme zívat, jsme-li postaveni před zívajícího souse­ da za stejných životních situacích. Tu opravdu nutkání. k tomuto projevu je tak naléhavé a svádivé, že mu propadneme také. jsouIidé, kdo začnou zívat, jakmile o tom uslyší vypravovat nebo o tom čtou. Tož po­ přejme každému tento jinak nevinný životní projev, svým způsobem zajímavý. Nejde-li o chorobný stav, nikomu nemůže uškodit. A já bych tak rád věděl, kolik z vás, milí čte­ náři, právě teď má nutkání k zívání po přečtení mého povídání.
