Our SPJST Society has received some very favorable publicity recently by some recent events.

Monday morning, December 18th, the local TV Station (KXXV) showed the SPJST Lodge No. 66 Waco Youth Club (youngsters) at the Moody Nursing Home bringing gifts to the elderly residents there and they even brought Santa Claus along.

Our Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir sent us the front page of the Sunday, December 17th Temple Daily Telegram's "Leisure" section with a nice writeup about the SPJST library, Archives and Museum with a color photo of the SPJST Christmas Tree.

The article mentioned Supreme Lodge President Howard Le s hi kar , State Youth Director Claudette Reese and LAM Curator Thelma Bartosh.

An investment in Security and Happiness. Every organization has a fair quota of members who can produce valuable, forceful and convincing reasons why fraternal work cannot progress like it did in the so called "good old days." Such weeping and wailing and gnashing of fraternal teeth is not new. Trace back the history and you will find this same complaint going back many years.

The real answer is that while this remains a principal complaint even in this day and age -- a good organization has much to offer. It depends upon the lodge officers and the committees in charge of programs, to place a proper interpretation upon our aims and objectives, and back it up with a nominal sacrifice of personal time and the practice of the principles of sound leadership.

In the streamlined 20th century, we have a tendency to say parrot - like: "Times have changed." But remember this: In so doing, we hurry right on past a fundamental truth that has to do with human nature. The real truth is that human nature actually has not changed much, if any, through all these centuries. If. there were difficulties in the past in getting good meetings and activities when the miracle of television, etc., were unheard of, there will be the same trouble today if we permit it to exist and flourish.

Good aims and good objectives need good workers to carry them into effect.

Leadership that is not inspired by the wholesome and the good, that does not recognize the inherent finesse of human nature or is unable to strive for the deep compensations that each cherished goal brings, cannot become successful leadership. If there is a will --- there will be a way toward more activity.

We must realize that fashions change in almost everything we buy --clothing, cars, appliances, even, the house you live in. Those wizards, the

United States manufacturers, are always coming out with new merchandise just a little better, or shinier, or easier to use.

Long before our physical possessions wear out, they are often outdated, and we simply feel we must at all costs have the new model.

Fortunately, there are a- few kinds of investments that don't deteriorate with the passing of time and age setting in, and some that actually increase in value while the months and years go by.

One of these is Insurance Protection. Another, just as important, to each and everyone of us, is friendship. Sincere and loyal, devoted friendship. Security never goes out of style, nor does friendship --- the warm companionship of respecting friends, growing stronger with the passing of time.

These are indeed wonderful investments in living that both protection and friendship can be found in a single "package," that is your reward when you join. This same package you give your friends and neighbors when you interest them in joining. Perhaps even now you have a friend who would like to share in this offer.

There is much to be accomplished, and we can do it. There are all kinds of activities that we can still carry on in our local lodges which would be effective in securing larger attendance .

Stagnation breeds defeat. Don't let it creep into your lodge. Keep it away with a consistent program of activities that will make your members sit up and take note. They will be eager to participate . *** Thursday, December 21st at 4 p.m. was the first day of Winter and also the shortest daylight hours of the year and it came in with a chilly blast all over Texas just to prove its presence.

The cold air broke many, many previous records and caused much discomfort in many places. Weather like this makes us appreciate spring, summer and fall! *** Bacteria in some smoked - salmon products sold under the Vita, Star David, Royal Taste, Meyers and Smith Brothers labels could be life threatening for fetuses, newborns and anyone with inadequate immune defenses. District III Seminars Held At Ennis, Fort Worth And Waco The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Ennis, Fort Worth and Waco.

SFR Jim Wiest conducted the seminars assisted by District III Director Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala representing the

SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote advanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they address SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations such as SPJST is not required by the Texas Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST does require its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Rosie Heins, November 22, 1989, Lodge 172 Member Endowed Policy Sister Rosie Heins residing in Rosenberg, Texas and a member of SPJST Lodge Rozk vet No. 172, Pasadena, Texas, recently received a

settlement option for her endowed policy upon reaching the age of 96, and was presented a Certificate of Appreciation by District V Director Louis Hanus.

President Alvin Sefcik of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, Texas, presented Sister Rosie Heins with a beautiful bouquet of red and white roses from the Lodge 172 membership, with deep appreciation and congratulated her as an active member of our SPJST Society for 75 years.

Brother Sefcik was elated when Sister Heins showed him the 50 - year membership pin she was wearing for the occasion of her endowed policy.

Rosie Heins was born November 22, 1893. She was one of seven children born to John and Annie Svetlik Mozala of Wesley, Texas; her sister, Mrs. Louis Horelica, age 93, lives in Wallis, Texas.

At age 21, in 1914, she became a member of SPJST Lodge Krasna No. 96 and presently is a member of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena.

Sister Heins has given our SPJST Society a distinguishable benevolent honor when she proudly stated: "I have been a proud member of our SPJST Society for 75 long years, and I'm looking forward to my 75 - year pin as a member of SPJST." Mrs. Heins'extended family includes two sons, Leonard Marek of Rosenberg and Raymond Marek of Runge; three daughters, Mrs. Sidney Bennett and Edna Delaune, both of Fort Worth and Mrs. Lydia Doughty of Rosenberg; eight grandchildren, eleven great - grandchildren and one great - great - grandchild.

Heritage Museum Plans Open House Today Czech

That's what visitors will hear at an open house from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Czech Heritage Museum, located in the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple.

The open house, which is free and open to the public, will feature two special holiday exhibits: a Christmas tree decorated with handmade ornaments; and a collection of dolls dressed in Czechoslovakian costumes.

The ornaments were made by SPJST youth group members as part of a statewide competition. Claudette Reese, state youth director, said this is the second year for the contest which is open to 6 - to 17 year - old boys and girls.

Winners were chosen in four age groups in each of the group's seven districts. Twenty - four of the ornaments are displayed on the front of the museum's Christmas tree, with last year's winners displayed toward the back of the tree.

The collection of ornaments, restricted by contest rules to a size of 3 inches by 3 inches, includes decorated styrofoam balls and pine cones, needlework, painted tin and other original creations.

Scattered under and around the tree are the winning handicraft entries from this year's Youth Achievement Day competition. The crafts, made by 15 - to 18 - year - old youth group members, will remain on display at the museum for a year.

Also under the tree, and displayed on artificial snowbanks around the exhibit, are dolls dressed in replicas of Czechoslovakian national and regional costumes.

The dolls were given to the museum from the estate of Miss Agnes Houdek of Dallas, who collected and dressed them over a period of 35 - 40 years, said Thelma Bartosh, museum curator.

"Miss Houdek copied the costumes from pictures of various regions in Czechoslovakia," Mrs. Bartosh explained. "Each doll represents a different region or section of Czechoslovakia, at different times in history."

Some of the dolls, which vary in size from 4 inches to more than 22 inches tall, were brought from Czechoslovakia. The others were purchased in the United States and dressed by Miss Houdek, complete with petticoats , stockings, boots and headgear.

The doll collection was acquired by the museum only this year, Mrs. Bartosh said. Individual dolls have been taken to fairs and festivals across the state as part of SPJST's "traveling museum," but a case for the dolls is under construction so that they can be part of the museum's permanent exhibit.

"This exhibit is great for Thelma and me," Mrs. Reese said. "She gets to show off her museum and her collection of dolls, and I get to show what the youth have done during the year."

The Christmas exhibit will remain on display until the second week in January. Regular museum hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. There is no admission charge.

The Czech Heritage Museum was created 17 years ago by the SPJST Supreme Lodge to preserve possessions of the original Czech immigrants, Mrs. Bartosh said. The museum also preserves the Czech culture and promotes pride in Czech heritage.

SPJST is a fraternal life insurance organization chartered in 1897 to assist new immigrants, especially widows and orphans, Mrs. Reese said It now serves to encourage individual and group social responsibility; to provide economic security and assistance to members and their families and other needy persons; and to promote American patriotism and the study and retention of the Czech language, traditions and cultural heritage.

Lodge No 9, Snook On December 3rd, Lodge 9 Snook held its Christmas Party for all the members. Anyone who didn't attend really missed a swell evening of fun, food and fellowship. The youth held their meeting about 3 p.m. to practice for their Christmas program and made decorations for the hall and Christmas tree.

At 4 p.m., the mother lodge held their meeting with our special guest, District I Director Andrew Vavra, who installed the officers for 1990. After the meeting, everyone enjoyed a program by our youth including songs, carols and skits, which were all very enjoyable which really put you in the spirit of Christmas.

Following the program, everyone enjoyed a basket lunch and a visit from Santa Claus. Those who attended really enjoyed themselves. Thanks for such a large crowd that came out for the evening.

On Sunday, December 10, 1989, our annual meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 72 members and 7 guests present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother James Archer III. May he rest in peace.

Our members' Christmas Party was held Friday, December 15th.

Election of officers for 1990 was held at this meeting and the Balloting Committee consisted of Henry Hermis, Jr., Robert Schleider and Gus Molenosky.

District V Director Louis Hanus spoke to thank all of us for the job done in 1989.

Sister Rosie Tumis was nominated and accepted to be a new sales representative for our Lodge No. 142.

Lodge No. 160,

San Angelo The annual meeting and dinner of Lodge No. 160, San Angelo was held December 10, 1989 at noon at the Wall Brethren Church Fellowship Building.

Southern Seas served the catered meal, followed by the .meeting at 1 p.m. President Dewyan Weise presided, leading the pledge to the flag. Sharon Waggoner and Neomi Drgac led a memorial service for all our deceased members.

Roll call followed with all officers present. Special guests from the Home Office, Vice President Bernie Gebala and his wife, and Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and his wife, were introduced. We were happy to have two officers from the Home Office to attend this meeting.

The youth club presented a program telling of all their activities for the year.

Officers' reports followed, including a report from Fraternal Activities Coordinator Martha Broz reporting on the success of the District Fun Day held in Wall in September. Vice President Leonard Jansa reported on the two Pee Wee teams we sponsor.

District IV Director Stanley Broz reported that our lodge is third in state of insurance in force.

Fifty - year pins were presented to Sylvia Barta, Esther Chasak, Bennie Mazur, Jerry Mazur and Barbora Wanoreck; also receiving 50 - year pins, but were not present, were Julius Bubenik, Mary Germany, Albert John Hoelscher, Edward W. Kocich and Lenora Pohl.

New business followed. We voted to make donations to the Pee Wee League, Scholarship Fund, Youth Club, Family Outreach, Wall Fire Hall, Battleship Texas, Czech Chair and Susan Bohnenberger.

Officers for the coming year were elected, namely: President -- Dewyan Weise Vice President -- Leonard Jansa Secretary -- Sharon Joy Waggoner Treasurer -- Diana Pelzel Youth Leader -- Betty Schwartz Fraternal Activities Coordinator -Martha Broz.

The meetings will be held at the VFW Post Home No. 4002 on Loop 281 just North of REO Palm Isle. Let us all thank the members of the Post for extending this kind hospitality to our lodge members.

The lodge members thank Alvin and Marie Gibson for hosting our Lodge 178 Christmas Party on December 8th; their home was beautifully decorated and all of the excellent tasting food and beverages were furnished by the Gibsons. All the food was also baked in their home.

We wish more members could have attended the party because members who were at the party had a most enjoyable time. This was a good way to lift anyone's Christmas spirit!

Warrenton Lodge 179 met for their monthly meeting on December 14, 1989 at 7 p.m. in the Warrenton Guest Room.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order, followed by Secretary Ricky Weyand's report.

Financial Secretary Arnold Peters gave his report. All reports were approved as read.

Mr. Peters announced that three new members were accepted into our

lodge. They are as follows: Brandy Allen Goehring, Cynthia A. Goehring and Ray A. Goehring, all of La Grange.

President Bergmann advised for next month's meeting January, 11, 1990, the new Food Committee would consist of Harold Bergmann, Ricky Weyand and Lee Leonhardt. Food Committee advised for next meeting they will have stew.

The meeting was adjourned, followed by a baked ham meal with refreshments.

Burleson Dear Members: Our December 5th meeting was short even though all the important business was taken care of. We had a poor attendance. We had plenty to eat and had fun at the Christmas Party; sorry the rest of you missed it!

A special thank you from all of us to Louis and Mydell Grochoske for donating the beautiful flocked Christmas tree and decorations to our lodge.

We are happy to have Karen Denise Ruiz as our new member. She is the daughter of our good members George and Kitty Rippin.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ernest Kelly asked everyone to turn in their fraternal activities' sheets.

Secretary Julia Dueser was unable to be at the meeting because they went to Charlottesville, Virginia. Their son had to have an emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. While at home, slowly recuperating, he got real sick and had to be rushed to the hospital and they diagnosed it as a bad case of flu. We hope he is feeling much better.

Our special thank you to Lodge No. 183 hosts of the four Lodges' Christmas Party. All of us had a wonderful time. I'm sure everyone else did, too.

The food was delicious and plenty of it and the music was good.

Everyone remember our New Year's Eve dance. The doors will open at 7 o'clock. Ramblin' Rhythm will play from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. Come help us ring out the old year and ring in the new year.

Our January meeting will be held January 9th instead of the 2nd because it is the day after the 1st. The trustees' meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. and chairmen of different departments will be elected. The regular lodge meeting will be at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge Jednota No. 196, Houston West Dear Members: I am sorry I haven't gotten my letter in sooner. It seems that these holidays slow me up and my oldest sister passed away. It was a very hard trip to Arkansas, but we were blessed with dry highways, but the weather was cold.

If you missed our meeting, you sure missed being with wonderful people and missed out on very good food.

No. 88, Houston Czech Class Report Lodge

December 4, was a day for a celebration at Lodge No. 88 at Houston. The Czech class completed its 16th ten weeks course of study and, as is usual, had a social. Almost like -"Vyhodit si z koatka."

In addition to singing Czech folk songs accompanied by John Havlik on his accordian, the original twenty four registered students hosted a total of forty - four, all helping to make the evening a success.

The class is considering a course of study lasting twelve weeks instead of the usual ten weeks. The students have found that individual involvment assures the success of the project. All work towards the goal where they learn about the background of their ancestors, the language and customs.

Czech Language Course At Alief

21st

AISD (Alief Independent School District) in Southwest Houston is offering through its Alief Community Evening School the 21st Czech language course starting on Thursday, January 18, 1990.

Alief Community Evening School, established for quite a few years in the Hastings High School, is located between Bellaire Blvd. in the South and Alief - Clodine in the North, just South of Cook Road and High Star Drive intersection in the Southwest Houston.

The first lesson of this course, designed to develop basic skill in the conversational Czech wherever it is spoken, will be on Thursday, January 18th and henceforth for 12 weeks always on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. (Please note: Alief Community Evening School brochure erroneously put the above time as 7:00 to 9:30.)

This class will be divided into 2 groups according to the knowledge of Czech of the signed - up students. Tuition, set by the school, will be $40 and instructor will be John J. Karas of Houston, again.

By Naomi K. Spencer At a time when sorrow and grief fall upon a family, it is also a time when friends mean so much My husband, Arnold Spencer, had been in poor health for several years, but it was only about a year that his illness became evident and showed signs of a hopeless condition.

For the kindness and thoughtfulness shown to Arnold and to me during his recent illness and passing, I want to thank everyone who came to call, who sent "Get Well" cards, flowers and tasty dishes.

I would like to add my special thanks to many members of Lodge 88 who either called or sent messages of sympathy and condolence after his passing.

I cannot overlook the concern, attention and assistance by Arnold's family. Even though approximately 400 miles separated us, members of his family came when it was possible. To them I am also grateful.

Arnold enjoyed recalling his life on the farm, and after serving three years in the National Guard, he enlisted in the Armed Forces shortly after the U.S. became involved in W.W. II. His training took him to Palacios, Texas and different locations throughout Texas. This was followed by being moved to Death Valley, California in 125 - degree heat which prepared him for North Africa where

he experienced three invasions and seven major battles, some of which were under General George Patton.

After his honorary discharge from the Army having served overseas for more than 35 months, he returned to his native Louisiana. He decided to take advantage of the G.I. Bill and enrolled in the Louisiana State University where he majored in Accounting. Five years later he accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service in Baton Rouge.

Given a promotion with a choice between New Orleans and Houston, he chose to come to Houston because of his fond memories while in training.

When he retired from the IRS after almost 28 years of service, he was awarded the ALBERT GALLATIN AWARD by the Department of the Treasury. This commendation honored Arnold Spencer for his loyalty, integrity and devotion to service. It was brought out that this was the first time in thirteen years that this emblem was presented.

Arnold Spencer joined the SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, in 1972 at which time he joined the Choral Group and also became very active in the Dramatic Club.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi; three sisters, Mable Thomas and husband, Harold, Melba Sheridan and husband, "Buster" (who served as State Representative of Louisiana for 28 years), Maxine Jordan and husband, Culey; two brothers, Richard and his wife, Nellie and Cary and his wife, Ivy. Also surviving him are his brother - in - law, Tim Kostom and his wife, Rosalee and sister - in law, Ruth Kurz and her husband. A number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive.

After funeral services at the Heights Funeral Home, the body was taken by TRANSPORT SERVICE to FRANKLINTON, LOUISIANA where relatives and close friends gathered for another service which included rites by the AMERICAN LEGION at the SPENCER CEMETERY. —SPJST-

Holly and Mindy Suehs are the daughters of Donnie and Betty Suehs.

Holly is 15 years old and is a sophomore at Caldwell High School.

Holly is the District I Queen for 1989 90. Mindy is 10 years old and is in the fifth grade at Caldwell Intermediate.

Holly's and Mindy's mother, Betty, was born in Caldwell and has lived her entire life there. Betty is administrative assistant at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Betty's mother is Gladys Masar Trcalek Hejl. Gladys' parents were John and Annie Mrnustik Masar.

Gladys is married to Daniel (Rusty) Hejl. Gladys is very active in the SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor. She loves to play in the SPJST Domino and Taroky Tournaments .

Holly's and Mindy's grandfather on their mother's side was Willie Trcalek.

Mr. Trcalek died in 1978. He was also very active in the SPJST and served as president of Lodge No. 17 for many years and loved to attend SPJST conventions.

Holly's and Mindy's mother has three sisters, Carol who is married to Bud Petty and they have three children, Mica, Marshall and Mabrey; Susan who is married to Gary Skrabanek and they have one son, Kyle; Donna who is married to Bruce Jones and they have one daughter, Lacy. Their Aunt Susan Skrabanek is District I youth counselor.

Holly's and Mindy's father was born and raised in Deanville, Texas.

He is a manager of Nagel Manufacturing in Caldwell. His parents are Harry and Elsie Prazak Suehs. He has six brothers and four sisters. Their grandfather, Harry, will be 85 years old and loves to play his fiddle and visit his children. Their grandmother, Elsie, passed away in 1985. Holly and Mindy have seventeen first cousins on the Suehs side of the family and six second cousins.

District III Holiday-In-The-Park On December 2nd, District III had a Christmas Party and Holiday - in - the - Park.

Our lodge went there and really had a great time playing games and just

visiting our fellow brothers and sisters.

We also enjoyed a really fun game of cops - n - robbers as you can see from the pictures and enjoyed a nice dinner. We would like to thank Sister Bessie Petr and all who helped for letting us come party and eat.

Six Flags was pretty and not too cold, several of us ice skated and lots of us snow sledded.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Starting June and ending in September, Lodge 88 Youth Club raised some money selling Gold "C" Coupon books.

In June, the club started taking down payments on the books. They took a down payment of $1 towards a $9 book. This lasted until the middle of August; then, they ordered 150 books.

Throughout the month of September, the youth sold books during Thursday night games, while they had the kitchen open. Also, they had a booth set up on Family Day to sell books.

In addition, youth members sold books on their own. Members selling the most books were: Jennifer Welfl,

Melissa Havemann selling Gold "C" Coupon Books first; Michelle Linney, second and Amanda Havemann, third.

This fund - raising activity brought in $259 to our funds. This money will most likely be used for the club's

Wednesday, December 27, 1989—VESTNtIU9 planned trip to go to Dallas and Six Flags next summer.

Other fund - raising activities that they have participted in, besides Thursday kitchen sales, included the SPJST candy sales and "It's a Jingle Out There" tote bags. This money will be used towards the District V Youth Club trip to Disneyworld and Florida in the summer of 1991. This trip is going to cost a lot of money, so, Lodge 88 is helping out in any way that it can.

Remember, if you plan to go on either of the trips, you MUST help at our fund - raisers and go to ALL the regular meetings.

Renelle Wright led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

There were thirteen members and three adults present.

The minutes were read and approved.

Michael Vans a gave the treasurer's report and our balance is $588.15.

We are going to have a dance for the fund - raiser of the month.

This month's charity project is that we are going to go to the hospital and give toys away.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Members of Lodge 88's Youth Club participated in the bi - yearly Workers' Party held October 8, 1989. Lodge members attending must be at least 16 years or older.

Representatives of the youth club, who have worked very hard over the past months were Youth Leader Barbara Linney, Mr. and Mrs. Weill, Mr. and Mrs. Havemann, Michelle Linney, Brian Havemann, Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl.

Lodge 9 Snook Youth Attend Christmas Party Dear Readers, Our December meeting was well attended and we made all the Christmas ornaments for our live Christmas tree. Thanks, Amy and Jason, for getting the Christmas tree from the woods.

We also had a very good turnout for our Christmas program and Santa came by to visit the children and some of the older ones, too.

We planned to take baskets to some elderly folks in our community and go caroling,. too. Also homemade Bible markers were sent to the rest home.

Our next monthly meeting will be Wednesday night, January 3, 1990 at 6:30 p.m. Come and bring a friend.

V Youth Attend Family Day District

On September 17, 1989, District V held its fall meeting and Family Day which was hosted by Lodge 88. There were many things for all of us to do, such as contests to enter, things to see, drawings to enter, things to buy, and a very brief meeting to hold.

There was also a potluck dinner, with all the meat provided. Everyone brought vegetables or desserts. The meal was super great.

There was a spin - wheel for all to take their turns on, and the Lodge 88 Choral Group sang for all gathered.

There were contests for adults to enter, such as kolache and quilt.

A Christmas Ornament Contest was held for the youth. Lodge 88 youth also held a drawing to win a $15 gift certificate to Sound Warehouse; also, Lodge 88 youth brought their Gold "C" Coupon books to sell. Michelle Linney and Melissa Havemann were the main two helping set up and run these activities.

Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl set up a large four - table display of the youth club's past and present activities.

There were two tables displaying pictures of District V trip to San Antonio. There was a poster made by Crystal Wallace containing past and present youth club activities, camp, T Shirts from 1987, 1988 (a design by Darlene Migl) and 1989 (a design by Marlene Migl).

Pictures from this year's camp were put out, and former years Beseda medals were shown.

Later there was a brief meeting.

District V Queen Crystal Wallace and Duchess Melissa Havemann spoke to the members about being District V Royalty and wished all a fun - day.

King Keith Kieschnick was also present, but he was busy getting ready to open the pool.

When the meeting was over, Lodge 88 pool was opened and the contest winners were soon announced.

Later on, District V Youth Club went to Pizza Hut for dinner.

Everyone always enjoys our pizza parties after District V meetings.

9 Snook Youth Enjoyed Christmas Festivities Lodge

Dear Readers, Our Christmas afternoon at the hall was fun, decorating the tree and hall, making decorations, snacks, covered dish supper and our program turned out fairly good. Thanks, Cheryl, and your committee for making up the program.

We also had door prizes and gave our honorary grandmother, Mrs. Ella Jakubik, a Christmas gift.

JOSIE LESHIKAR, age 91, of Taylor, who died in Sweetbriar Nursing Home on Wednesday, October 18, 1989.

Mrs. Leshikar was born on February 18, 1898 in Czechoslovakia and had lived in Taylor most of her life.

She was a member of the American Spiritualist Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 29.

Her husband, Henry Leshikar preceded her in death in February, 1961. She was also preceded in death by a daughter and son - in - law.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Leshikar of Taylor and Julia Jozwiak of Sealy; six grandchildren, seven great, - grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Condra Funeral Home.

LEON A. KRUEGER, 68, of Birch, who died Thursday evening, November 16, 1989 at a Brenham hospital.

Brother Krueger was born April 22, 1921, the son of the late William E. Krueger and Louise Schubert in Lyons, Texas. He retired as a machinist from International Shoe Factory in June, 1981. He also was a hay farmer and a cattle rancher. He enjoyed working with his cattle and helping other people.

Brother Krueger was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat. He was also a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor and

the Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 301 in Deanville.

He served in Germany with the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Margaret Carrie Knesek on October 25, 1947 at Frenstat.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gene Krueger; one grandson, Donnie Krueger and one sister, Lois Gerland.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Krueger of Birch; one daughter, Janice Kotch of Frenstat; two sons, Dennis Krueger of Frenstat and Jeff Krueger of Birch; two sisters, Esther Shupak of Caldwell and Gladys Fojtik of Houston; one brother, Walter Krueger of College Station; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

A Christian wake was held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 18 from Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m.

Sunday, November 19 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat with Monsignor Ray Widicki officiating.

Pallbearers were Tim Knesek, Melvin Knesek, Darryl Krueger, George Bohacek, Jr., Larry Faust and Lonnie Webb.

Interment was in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery in Frenstat.

MINNIE KOVAR, who died Sunday, November 19, 1989 in a Bryan hospital.

Mrs. Kovar was born November 7, 1896 in the Mound Prairie community of Burleson County, Texas. She was the daughter of Tom and Annie Palsek Vajdak. A lifelong resident of Burleson County, she attended Sebesta School, was baptized and confirmed at Snook Brethren Church. She was the first person to drive a car in Burleson County.

She married Henry Kovar on October 7, 1917 in Snook and; among her many attributes, she was known as an excellent cook. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on March 26, 1972; a daughter, Albina Dalchau; a sister, Marie Sebesta; an infant brother, John Vajdak; brothers, Henry, Adolph, Joe, Tom and Walter Vajdak; grandsons, Henry Cartwright and Tabor Allen.

She is survived by two daughters, Viola Sebesta and Minnie Folterman and husband, Arnold; three sons and daughters - in - law, Raymond and Margie Kovar, Richard and Georgie Kovar, Edwin and Ruth Kovar, all of Snook; two sisters, Annie Snotek of Caldwell, Mattie Rubach and husband, Johnny of Snook, Bill and Helean Vajdak of San Diego, California, Robert and Betty Vajdak of Snook; 18 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and one great - great grandchild.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, November 21 at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, November 22 at the

Snook Brethren Church with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment followed in the Snook Cemetery.

LOUIS M. CHARANZA. Funeral services for Louis M. Charanza, 81, of Caldwell were held Monday, November 13, 1989 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell with burial in the church cemetery. Monsignor Emilian Foltyn officiated.

Mr. Charanza was born April 5, 1908 in Burleson County to the late Charlie Charanza and JoAnna Vavra Charanza. He was a lifelong resident of Caldwell.

He was a farmer most of his life, and he also worked for Woodson Lumber Company and Negel Wire Company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and raising chickens.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell and the SPJST Novy Tabor Lodge No. 17.

Mr. Charanza and Mary Jankowiak were married in 1939 at Frenstat.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Charanza of Caldwell; one son, Milton Charanza of Caldwell; one daughter, Dorothy Adamek of Santa Fe; three brothers, Emil Charanza of Lufkin, George Charanza of Crockett and Frank Charanza of Houston; one sister, Emma Gold of Caldwell; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

He was born March 26, 1913 in Granger, and was married to Emily Kokes on February 25, 1936 in Temple. He lived in the Rowena community until 1929 when he moved to Wall, where he and his wife farmed until his retirement in 1977.

He was a member of the Wall Brethren Church, where he served on the Board of Elders as president and secretary, helped build the new Brethren churches in 1937 and 1955, and served as president of the Mutual Aid Society. He was a member of SPJST and served as past secretary for this organization.

Survivors include his wife, Emily Krupala of the home; two sons and daughters - in - law, Robert and Kay Krupala and John and Donna Krupala, all of San Angelo; three grandchildren. Jennifer Krupala of San Angelo, Randy Krupala of Austin and Laura Krupala of College Station; one brother and sister - in - law, Edwin

Funeral services for Brother Zikes were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, December 8th at the Emken - Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. Rev. Jay Gross of the First. Baptist Church in Texas City officiated. Burial was in the Bryan City Cemetery at 3 p.m.

December 8th, with the Rev. Dick Maples officiating.

Brother Zikes was born March 28, 1921, in the community of Macy near Wheelock and attended elementary school at King's Highway Elementary School before completing his education in Bryan. He was a retired machinist foreman for the Todd Shipyards. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Texas City, served in the military during World War II and a member of SPJST since March 3, 1937.

Brother Zikes' survivors include his wife, Eloise Zikes of Texas City; a son, Frankie Lee Zikes of Texas City; daughters, Beverly Henke of Aurora, Colorado and Linda Diane Zikes of Texas City; a brother, Charlie Zikes of

Bryan; a sister, Lottie Jones Warner of Robbins, Georgia and a grandson.

Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth, Texas wish to express our heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of ROBERT FRANK TUIJS, of 2410 Roosevelt Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas, who died on Thursday, December 14, 1989 in a Fort Worth hospital at the age of 68.

Brother Tulis was a lifelong resident of Fort Worth and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92. He graduated from North Side High School, where he made the All - District Football Team in 1939, and from Texas A&M University, where he was on the All Southwest Conference Squad. He played professional football for the Detroit Lions.

He served in the Marine Air Corps during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific Theater as a pilot and earning the rank of major.

Brother Tulis retired as a draftsman for Recognition Equipment in 1987.

He had coached high school and junior college football and was an avid golfer.

Rosary was recited on Sunday, December 17 at 6 p.m. at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church on Monday, December 18th. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mount Olivet Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brother Tulis is survived by two sisters, Margueret Konecny of Fort Worth and Irene Heitzman of Pilot Point.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth on behalf of our membership wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother PAUL GENE MCDOUGALL, a butcher, who died Saturday, December 9, 1989 at his Saginaw home. He was 53.

Brother Paul owned and operated McDougall's Processing Plant north of Saginaw for ten years. He also worked for General Dynamics the last few years.

He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aero - Space Workers AFL - CIO and Lodge No. 154 for 22 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary McDougall of Fort Worth; three sons, Charles McDougall of Springtown, Douglas McDougall of Saginaw and Mark McDougall of Fort Worth; brother, Louis McDougall of Fort

Worth; sister, Florence Million of Bedford and one granddaughter.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Features Elzner Coaching At Episcopal School One of the hardest jobs to fill and to hold is that of Middle School Coach, but this year the gods were with us, and on the scene appeared TIM ELZNER recently graduated from Texas A&M University and eager to take on coaching duties for grades five through eight. Tim has brought expertise, humor, patience and exuberance to the job and is a favorite of students and faculty alike. Trinity Episcopal School in Galveston, Texas would like to keep him for a long time and will make every effort to do so.

Tim graduated from King High School in Corpus Christi, Texas and he was in Lodge 79 Youth Club for a number of years and still is a member of the lodge.

Of Interest Head And Neck Cancers: Usually Preventable, Most Are Curable An estimated 50,000 cases of head and neck cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, and 15,000 of those cases will result in death.

However, most of these cancers can be cured if detected early and most can be prevented altogether.

Head and neck cancers include: cancer of the mouth, throat, voicebox (or larynx), thyroid gland, esophagus, certain lymphomas or blood cancers, and tumors of the nose. The most common head and neck cancer is basal cell cancer of the skin, which is highly curable if treated early and properly.

Basal cell cancers appear most often on sun - exposed areas like the forehead, face, and ears, although they can occur anywhere on the skin.

Other kinds of skin cancers such as malignant melanoma and squarnous cell cancers can also occur on the head or neck or phlegm for more than a few days, see your physician.

Rozhodujicim iniciatorem listopadovYch spoleeenskYch bouti bylo potlaeeni a rozehnani demonstraeniho pochodu dne 17. listopadu 1989 policii. V tento den, kterY je nazYvan "Mezinarodnim dnem studentstva" na pamet' 01)&1 studentskeho odporu vnei hitlerovkemu Nemecku, byl povolen a konal se pietni prtivod studentu (hlavne z vysokYch gkol) na hrbitov v Praze na Vy gehrade. Dal gi den se studenti soustredili do gkol, odmitli vyueovani a vyhlasili stavku. Postupne se k nim pfidavaly gkoly ni2iiho stupne. Take profesofi se pfipojili a postupne i dalgi vrstvy obyvatelstva. Herci a pracovnici Narodniho divadla sledovali rozhaneni davu vlastne z oken sve budovy a take se jako jedni z prvnich pfidali na stranu studentu. Po pfipojeni dalgich pra2skYch divadel protestni akce stale rostla. Pfipojil se i oficialni Svaz socialisticke mlacla is e, ktery byl organisatorem pietniho pochodu pled demostraci. Protest vyjadfovali dalgi herci, spisovatele, hudebnici a jini umelci a intelektualove a pozdeji i delnici. Protestni akce v Praze mely rozhodujici z vedouci roli, i kdyi se pozdeji protesty rozilfily pies Brno a Bratislavu do cele republiky. Jeliko2 vladnouci kruhy nejprve vyslovily podporu zakroku policie, smefoval protest stale vice proti nim.

V prynich dnech po 17. listopadu 1989 byly vladnouci kruhy ochromeny.

Cele Vaclayske namesti v Praze se najednou, u2 bez pfekgek, zapinilo protestujicim statisico yYm davem, pozornost na sebe strhl balkon domu nakladatelstvi Melantrich, kterY se stal tribunou feeniku. "praiskeho jara 1968" A. Dubeek aj.

Mezitim se konstituovaly na gkolach, v Narodnim divadle v Praze i v Bratislava a postupne i v tovarnach stavkove vybory, organisovala se

taktika dalgiho postupu a formovalo se petieni zneni protestu. Jeliko2 oficialni mista nejevila . ochotu s protestujicimi jednat, byly nekolikabodove poiaday ky studentstva a rriladde pfijaty za spoleenY program viech protestujicich. Disidentske kruhy se zaealy sdru'iovat formou obeanske iniciativy ✓ tzv. "obeanske forum", ktere dsty svYch mluveich, hlavne Vaclava Havla ✓ Cechach a herce Milana Kriaiko na Slovensku, se jednotne postavilo po bok pokojme rebelujicich studentO a mladeie. Masova sclelovaci media, hlavne televize a rozhlas, tentokrat protestni akce nezamleovala a tak cela republika, i okolni svet, viichni byli dobfe informovani.

Po cele republice narustal neklid a hluenost, ale protesty nevyboeily z verbalnich hranic a pfesto byly pnsobive, jelikoI byly provadeny organisovane velkYmi skupinami lidi a po dlouhou dobu. Manifestovand hesla se soustted'ovala hlavne k pok'adavku objektivniho vygetteni zakroku policie vuci studentum, k po2adavku na demisi odpovednYch osob a po skoneeni vlady jedne strany, ale take na pfehodnoceni uddlosti z roku 1968 v CSSR. K nasili nedochkelo, ale take ne k 2adnemu jednani a dohede mezi protestujicimi a vladni mod, a tak vyhlagend protestni dvouhodinova stavka (varovna) byla pfijata vgeobecne jako nezbytnost a pfidalo se k ni i oficialni ROH (odbory).

Vladni moc se postupne probouzela z goku a po poeateenim vahani se pomerne rychle konsolidovala. KSC si zvolila noveho sofa - Karla Urbanka, kterY shodou okolnosti v dobe zaeatku nynej gich uddlosti vedl delegaci KSC na sjezdu Komunisticke strany Rumunska. KSC pfijala jako zasadu k regeni nynej gi krize nenasilnY postup politickYmi prostfedky, bylo provedeno personalni oddeleni funkci v KSC a ye statnich organech (aby jedna osoba nemela vysokou funkci v KSC a soueasne ye statnim apatite.) KSC byla orientovana na obranu svYch posic.

Varovna, politicks dvouhodinova generalni stavka v pondeli dne 27. listopadu 1989 byla tedy v geobecne pfijata, probehla a skoneila dohodou mezi vladni mod a protestujicimi - prijetim pol'adavkil studentu s vYhradou, ie se odmita vie, co je zamefeno proti socialistickemu vYvoji v CSSR. Zatimni teekou v tomto dramatu melo bYt schvaleni zmen tti elanku platne Ustavy Federalnim shromadenim CSSR, (parlamentem), ye kterem ma stale pfevahu KSC a ye kterem stale sedi i osoby, ktere ureovaly dosavadni politiku.

V tistave CSSR byly provedeny tyto zmeny: - v elanku 4 byly vypu gtena formulace o vedouci tiloze KSC v republice, - v elanku 6 byla zmenena formulace o uzavfenosti institutu Narodni fronty a o vedouci nloze KSC ✓ ni na otevfenost bez vedouci role KSC, -a v elanku 16 bylo upti gteno od formulace, 2e marxismus-leninismus je zakladem kulturni a vzdelanostni politiky v CSSR a byla pouiita yhodnej g i formulace. Oddelenim (personalnim) funkce presidenta dalgich vladnich funkci od funkci v KSC vlastne vzniklo nova mocenske centrum opirajici se o platnou Ustavu,

ktere zatim tisty presidenta nezaujalo stanovisko.

Je konec listopadu 1989, nastava zima a ohlaiuje se brzy a sflne. Mrzne.

Dospelo se k zatimnimu konsensu protestujici davy se roze gly. K pfevratu v Ceskoslovensku nedoglo.

Co dodat?

Zda se, 2e KSC si yeas uvedomila vaine nebezpeei ztraty sve moci. Phjala vhodnou a neinnou taktiku "povoleni uzdy" a uddela si svou moc. Uha ila koncepci socialistickeho vYvoje Ceskoslovenska. Dosud nebYvalYmi opatrenimi, jako uvolnenim censury, neomezovanim verbalnich projevu, propugtenim nekterYch vezfin, otevtenim hranic pro drive tabuisovane osoby (redaktory radia Svobodna Evropa, exulenty a emigranty) a zejmena slibem podilu na vlade pro vg echny, kteri jsou pro socialismus, fakticky pfijala yYzvu k politickemu boji a historicke zkuienosti neopravriuji k domnence, 2e by jej neumela vest.

A co oposice? Pfedeviim je tfeba si uvedomit, ze jde o oposici tzv. konstruktivnl, o nespokojence, ktefi, struene teen°, chteji to stejne, jenom si mysli, 2e je mono toho dosahnout jinYm zpilsobem. Jsou presvedeeni, socialismus dosud neprojevil sve pfednosti, 2e dosud nejsme dal, jako tfeba vy v Americe, jenom proto, 2e jej dosud uskuteeriovali nespravni lide a pfedpokladaji, i'e a2 to "vezmou do ruky" ti spravni odbornici, jak se fika "velci lide nail souCasnosti", tak 2e se podafi uskuteenit to, co se doposud nikomu uskuteCnit nepodaiilo socialismus maxisticke'ho typu. K jinemu nazorovemu sjednoceni zatim nedoglo.

Vzajemne vztahy mezi CSSR a USA se zatim nezmenily. Vlada US se do uddlosti v CSSR formalne nevme guje a to je, myslim, dobfe. Prozatim mezinarodni a mezistatni vztahy nejsou ale na takove drovni, aby prostY obean si mohl jednoduie koupit na trhu vlajku - statni symbol naieho osvoboditele a spojence Sovetskeho svazu. A pokud jde o vlajku SpojenYch state americkYch, tak tuto obyeejnY obean prakticky nema moinost v CSSR ziskat normalni koupi a to ani prostfednictvim US ambasady.

Blai se vanoce 1989. Za chvili budeme o rok star gi. Jsem rad, 2e jsem v Texasu ziskal pratele, o kterYch jsem pled rokem jegte nevedel. Dekuji yydavatelnm a etendinm Casopisu "Vestnik", 2e mne pomohli v tomto tisili obyeejneho obeana po zlepgeni vztahn mezi nagimi narody a staty. when you swallow can be a sign of infection or tumor growth in the throat. This is particularly serious if it is associated with difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness or a lump in the neck. These symptoms should be evaluated by an otolaryngologist (ears, nose and throat doctor).

Growth or discoloration of a mole on the neck, face or head.

Masses or growths in the neck. A lump in the neck that lasts more than two weeks should be examined by a physician as soon as possible. A lump or lumps in the neck can be the first sign of cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, thyroid gland, or certain lymphomas or blood cancers.

Although many of the symptoms listed above can occur when no cancer is present, it is safer to consult a physician to find the cause and, hopefully, rule out cancer.

Tobacco (cigarettes, pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco or snuff) and alcoholic beverages have been linked to about 90 percent of head and neck cancer cases. Prolonged exposure to sunlight has also been associated with cancer of the lip.
