Lodge 88, Houston is having a benefit dance for District IV Youth Counselor Sister Susan (Urbanek) Bohnenberger who is gravely ill.

The dance is scheduled for Saturday, December 9th in the Chandelier Ballroom This is indeed a very worthy and timely cause, which we hope will become very successful.

We've noticed that some benefits have already been held and/or are being planned for this young lady.

It is at times like these that our SPJST Fraternal Society's Benevolence, Humanity, Brotherhood and Fraternalism shine through and certainly reveal the difference between Fraternal Benefit Societies and the regular Old Line Legal Reserve Insurance Companies.

We hope our State and National Insurance Departments in our state capitals as well as in Washington, D.C. note this difference and recognize its worth to our states and nation! *** Recent events in Czechoslovakia have brought a number of television and radio station "crews" to our City of West.

First there were local television stations, then television stations from Austin and Dallas - Fort Worth, and this week national CNN network (Atlanta, Georgia) visited West, all wanting local Czech - Moravian descendants' viewpoints and feelings about events unfolding in Czechoslovakia.

Some time ago, West adopted the slogan: "West, the Czech point of Central Texas!" Evidently that and the annual Westfest [Labor Day Weekend] both have brought attention to focus on our friendly city in Central Texas.

Naturally, the residents of West are very grateful to the local, state and worldwide news media for the excellent coverage they gave us recently! ***

This season is the time of year when our members and readers are well advised to beware of door - to - door and mail efforts to solicit donations for various types of causes and organizations.

Make sure the persons asking for donations are really representing legitimate causes; otherwise, your donation may very easily end up in someone's individual pocket.

If you have any doubt at all, kindly and firmly refuse; you may also check with the Better Business Bureau where they maintain records of charitable organizations. There are very many "fly - by - night" fickle panderers going around all - year long, especially now!

The subject of wills has been brought to the attention of our members a number of times. It still remains a vital subject. For that reason, we reprint here an observation of a certain life insurance underwriter.

Back when radio was just becoming a business, I called on a young man when he was winding up his first year as a radio dealer. He was doing a good job too, and agreed that he should have about $8,000 more life insurance for the protection of his wife and two small children. But after the examination the doctor told me that the man's heart wouldn't last five years probably wouldn't even last one year.

It was a tragic thing, but that young man's wife took it wonderfully. And furthermore, she turned out to be a good business woman. She hired a housekeeper, took over the store, and proceeded to beat even her husband's business record.

Fused to drop by occasionally, and the last time I saw him before he died he said, "You can't imagine what a great relief it is to me to know that Inez and the kids are probably better off than they'd have been if I'd gone along to a ripe old age." I agreed with him -Inez was a born business woman. In fact, she was right in the midst of consolidating the stock of two competitors she had bought out, floating a sizable loan at the bank, and making extensive alterations in a new store they had leased.

A few days later, my young friend died. He left no will. And then tragedy really struck. The law in our state provided that since he had no will, Inez would get one - third of the estate and each of the children, a third.

The court was friendly enough, but it had no choice in the matter. "Either you buy the children's two - thirds interest in the business, or it must be sold to someone else. Their inheritance must be invested in securities legal for minors," the Judge told Inez. You can imagine how little the business brought at a forced sale. However, Inez still had a job. She worked for the people who bought the business.

Since then it has been difficult for a prospect to get away from me without our checking on his will. And it is surprising how many men see a real and immediate need for life insurance once they do some straight thinking about wills! ***

Following at least 100 non - fatal cases of food poisoning across the country, the Food and Drug Administration is temporarily halting imports into the U.S. of all canned and jarred mushrooms from China and some from Hong Kong. People with mushrooms on their shelves should check to see if they come from batches found to contain the offending bacteria. Look for the following codes, usually stamped on the top or bottom of the cans: TM, T3, T17, M2, B2, Ll, Q15, R12 and Qi.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, November 12, 1989 at Mr. Gatti's with Vice President Gaye Galetka presiding.

Flag Bearer Janell Chudej led the members in the pledge to the flag.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky, Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka and Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej also gave their reports.

After a discussion, it was voted to contribute $100 to the Hallettsville United Way Fund, $50 to the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch and to purchase two gifts for the Deputy Santa Program.

Election of officers was held. Prior to the election, a discussion was held and it was voted to give a fee to the vice president who is also the FAC. A motion was made and voted on to elect all present officers by acclamation. Motion carried.

Plans were made for our December meeting and Christmas Party. It will be held December 10th at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 1:30 p.m. and meeting starts at 2 p.m. Following a short meeting, Santa Claus will arrive and visit with the children as usual. The lodge will provide pizza and drinks for lunch and members are asked to bring cookies. Door prizes will be given.

The meeting adjourned followed by refreshments.

October, November and December birthdays were honored. Members present with a birthday in these months were Vicky Zak, Janell Chudej and Evelyn Holy. Winner of the cake was Vicky Zak; door prize winner was Gaynell Chudej.

Lodge

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 24, Flag Hall, was held Sunday afternoon, November 12th. We had no visitors this month but our attendance was good.

On the sick list this month is Vlasta Martinec. We wish her good health soon; also my father, Joe Dubcak, of Lodge 47 is recuperating from heart surgery. Best wishes from our lodge to these folks. We wish all our lodge members good health.

Our sympathy goes to the family of Mary Jones. She was Mark McCray's grandmother. Mark is a regular caller at our game nights.

November Meeting Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on November 19th by President Mary Alice Langlotz.

Flags were presented by Alicia Neslony and Ashley Locke with Jesika Tierce leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

All officers were present.

We had one visitor, 011ie J. Hall.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and were approved. Also a thank you note from Arthur Langlotz, Jr. was read.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting were read and approved.

The Entertainment Committee report concerned the upcoming Holiday Season. Lodge 66 will hold its Christmas Party on Saturday, December 9th.

The doors will open at 3 p.m. and supper will be served at 5 p.m.

The youth will present a program and there will be a visit from Santa.

The dance will begin after the program.

Our members are asked to bring desserts.

The party is for members only and their immediate family. There will be a $5 charge for guests.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the fraternal activities report; the volleyball team won second place at State. She also asked us to bring one can for the Caritas and also bring your old eye glasses to the Christmas Party.

Our family social will be Monday, December 11th at 7 p.m.; bring snacks.

There was discussion about Lodge 66 possibly holding one of the tournaments at our lodge.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for our departed member, Albina (Petter) Urbanovsky. A moment of silence was held in her memory.

Our youth leader reported there were nineteen members and one new member present. They are working the kitchen on Saturday night dances.

They will be going to the Moody Nursing Home on December 17th.

They will have their Youth Christmas Party on December 20th.

Due to the Christmas Holiday Season, we will not have a meeting in December (only our Christmas Party).

Corpus Christi Dear Members: On Sunday, December 10, the joint Christmas Party of SPJST Lodge No. 79, Sokol Corpus Christi and Local SVPS will be held at Lodge No. 79 SPJST - Sokol Hall on 5502 Kostoryz Road. The doors to the hall will open at 4 p.m.

There will be a program, followed by a covered dish supper, for which each family is asked to bring enough food for themselves and any guest(s) you wish, After the meal, the one and only Santa will be making a visit with bags of goodies. Come and enjoy the day.

The October monthly meeting of Lodge No. 79, was Sunday, October 15 with thirteen members and one guest present.

Secretary Helen Pavelka was absent and Sister Thelma Hrncir substituted as secretary for the meeting.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Mary Hermis who had passed away on October 4th.

The financial report was made by Treasurer Jerry Sijansky and accepted as given.

Other business was discussed and taken care of.

District VII Director Thelma Hrncir reported on her recent trip to National Fraternal Congress in Scottsdale, Arizona; she also gave highlights on the October 9 - 12, 1989 Supreme Lodge meeting.

After a discussion, it was decided not to nominate anyone for the "Fraternalist of the Year" for 1989.

Members voted approval for charity donation of $50, the monthly donation for September and October, was given to Driscoll Children's Hospital.

A motion was made and passed to discontinue the door prize drawing in 1990, except on special occasion. Sister Thelma Hrncir was the lucky winner for October.

The November regular monthly meeting was held on Sunday, November 19 with eleven members and one guest in attendance.

All the officers were present.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Annie M. Sacky, Sister Kari Ann Moore and Brother Frederick W. Ludewig who had passed away since the last meeting.

Treasurer Jerry Sijansky gave a favorable financial report and it was approved as given.

District VII Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir had recently attended a Rest Homes' Board Meeting and he said the rest home in Taylor is asking for donations for purchasing Whirlpool baths to be used by residents.

After a discussion, members of Lodge 79 voted and approved to make a $50 donation for November and December, 1989 towards the Whirlpool bath for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor.

Members are asked to bring prizes for social games to the December meeting that will be given to the two rest homes and please mark your gift for lady or man. Brother Eugene Hrncir will deliver the items to the rest homes.

The lucky door prize winner in November was Sister Helen Sacky.

The next meeting will be held on Sunday, December 17th. There will be a catered dinner paid by the lodge for members and guests to be served at 1 p.m.

After dinner, the annual meeting will be held, so, mark your calendar to be there, come voice your opinion. The election of officers will be held.

Each family is asked to bring a dessert to be served with the dinner.

Temple SPJST Lodge No. 87 held their meeting Friday evening, November 10th at 7 p.m.

President Ladis Navratil called the meeting to order.

Flag Bearer Ed Riesner led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A silent tribute was paid to deceased members .

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Various reports were given, correspondence was read, old and business topics were discussed.

The following new members and additional insurance were accepted into our lodge, namely, Donald Lee Wall, Jason Henry and Jennifer Henry.

The Christmas meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, December 8th at the lodge hall on Middle Road, Temple. A covered dish meal will be served; the ladies will furnish meat, bread and beverages. Members are to bring a covered dish of vegetable, salad and/or a dessert for family and guests.

There will be a gift exchange with a limit of $2 per gift; each member to bring a gift for adults suitable for male or female and if there are children present, a gift exchange for a child.

Games will be played and a sing - a long also, so mark this meeting on your calendar.

No. 88, Houston News Lodge

On November 12, 1989, we again had a beautiful occasion at our lodge.

It seems we have many couples now who reach that 50th wedding anniversary, and this was Royal and Laura Bell Warnasch, who are very active in our Society for many years.

They were married November 11, 1939 in Industry, Texas. Laura Bell was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Boelsche from Industry and Royal grew up about a mile from my home. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Warnasch from the Rockhouse community.

They celebrated with a reception and dance, hosted by their children Beverly and Ronnie McGaughey and Kim and Royal Warnasch, Jr. and their precious grandchildren, Gary McGaughey, who is soon graduating from Rice University, and Justin and Allison Warnasch, who are such cute little children. I know those grandchildren are their pride and joy, and something to live for. As soon as I get a photo of this lovely couple, I will mail one to the Vestnik.

The Knights of Dixie played for the dance, which was appropriate, after a big dinner, catered by Willie Wehring Catering Service; we needed some exercise. We all had a wonderful time and extend our congratulations to this fine couple and their children.

On November 12, 1989, we had our monthly meeting with a good crowd in attendance.

President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. with Marlene and Darlene Migl and Michelle Linney presenting the flags. The Pledge of Allegiance followed.

We had three deaths this month; Ronnie Durossette, Anna Goebel and Helen Valcik, an honorary member of the Birthday Club.

FAC Homer Alexander announced that on December 8 and 9, they would have a Defensive Driving Course, so if your contract has expired you'd better take it, again.

I've been observing a few things about our youth members, they are providing food for our Thursday night games, and a Mrs. Tina Ondrasek has been baking some most delicious pastry for them. She'll bring the best kolache, and the most delicious pies. I know the youth and youth leaders appreciate that, and the people are beginning to ask for the pastry. Also Marlene Migl gave a beautiful speech for the youth at the meeting that night.

She also announced that on December 11, they'll have a play at the Christmas Party. Be sure and mark your calendar. We can't afford to miss the night with Santa Claus.

On Sunday, December 10 is our annual meeting beginning at 10 a.m.

The monthly meeting will be first and, after lunch, the annual meeting will start. Be sure and come because we may need some new ideas for 1990.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox had a good report. He asked that we pass out the dance schedules

because that is a big help to the committee and the lodge.

NOTICE: New Big Band -- Gary Richards on February 2, 1990.

The New Year's Eve tickets must be paid as soon as possible. Tables are filling up fast and many tickets are already paid for. Vrazels are playing, and tickets must be paid for by December 15th. The dance is from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and $25 per couple.

Also don't forget the Blue Room dance on December 17th; that's a Christmas Party -- dinner, drinks and dance for $12.50 a person. DON'T MISS THIS! Mrs. Joe (Kitty) Knapick was very sick sometime ago, but you wouldn't believe how well she looks now, and attends our meetings regularly. Joe, you are taking good care of her.

Mrs.. Frank Dvorak and I visited about an hour while she was here. She now lives in Norman, Oklahoma with her son, Henry and wife, Polly.

Be sure and keep Naomi Kostom Spencer in mind, when you say your prayers because her husband, Arnold, has been very ill. The flowers from Czech Day were taken to Della Kadlecek and Arnold Spencer by Tim and Rosalee Kostom.

Alma Carswell, Viasta Stasta, Emil Kilnar, Agnes Pederson and "Squatty" Lyons are also on the sick list. "Squatty" has been a commissioner in Harris County for over 40 years; do remember all of our members with a card or prayer.

President Gene Barcak of the Choral Group announced they were going to Clute on a bus to sing. I will write more about this next time. I have no details as of now.

Mr. Bill Souchek always livens up our meeting with a good clean joke.

District V Director Louis Hanus gave us some valuable information, and DYC Marie Stayton also spoke and encouraged our children to join the youth club, which is very important in their lives.

The "Fraternalist of the Year" was selected and voted on, and it was Tillie Helmcamp, who has worked in most

all committees of our SPJST Society, including the presidency. I will have a more detailed report as soon as I get the information from the committee.

Congratulations, Tillie, this is quite an honor.

On December 9, 1989, there will be a benefit dance at our lodge. Chairman Cox consented to give all the profit of the dance to Susan Urbanek Bohnenberger, who has been ill for some time. All of us know how expensive that can be and there just isn't a nicer time than now -- here at Christmastime to share with such an unfortunate thing. God will bless all of us for the donations -- SO BE GENEROUS and help this lady, a former District IV Youth Counselor.

The Central Texas Sounds will play. If you wish to donate, although you may not dance, give the money to the personnel in the office, and it will be turned in to whomever is in charge.

On November 4, 1989, Lodge 88 sponsored a volleyball group; they were Vincent and Vernon Hegwood, Bobby Allbritton, Lynn Pflughaupt, Jeff Barcak, Kim Holub, Chrissy Bilnoski and Traci Green. These fine young people are all in college or have been, and didn't get an opportunity to practice. They told me they got 4th place and that's very good as far as I'm concerned.

Thanksgiving Day was beautiful in Houston -- no rain, only a little chilly.

We had a great time at my home. The greatest thing that happened was when Glenn Hanka drove up with Grandma Hanka in the car. He went to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and got her.

She was feeling real good. Bruce Hanka, also a grandson, took her back. She had such a good time and enjoyed the attention and love she got from all and the little children, especially. My daughter, Arlene said, "This makes Thanksgiving perfect with Grandma here."

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92 held their November 14th meeting with 60 members and some visitors gathering at the Lotus Restaurant for a dinner. We had a private dining room, nicely arranged and decorated. We all enjoyed it very much. We must say thank you to Clara Cohen for making the arrangements for us and all the ladies who helped Clara. After dinner some members returned to the lodge for games.

Our Christmas dinner will be on December 12th, our regular meeting date. The Circle will furnish ham; all the ladies are asked to bring their favorite dish or dessert.

The hostesses for the day will be Dona Hubenak, Zana Alldredge, Mary Ann Gibson, Elma Anderson and Anna Lesikar.

All the ladies who want to take part in the exchange of a gift are asked to bring a $3 gift Birthdays in November were Elma Anderson, Flora Koci, Merel Kovar, Ida Mayer, Lillie McMillen, Agnes Merlick, Victor Murphy, Laura Posival, Ann Schneider and Claude Marchioni. I listed Alfred Svacek as having a birthday in October and his birthday is in February; sorry about that, Al. I also said Dona Hubenak went to Germany and Dona really went to Czechoslovakia; sorry about that, Dona, but she still had a good time wherever she went.

We were sorry to lose a member, my sister, Ida Mayer who moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma to be near her daughter. We will miss Ida and hope she will come to visit us.

We hope that all the members and friends who are on the sick list will soon be well.

No. 130, Dallas

CAMPOUT 1989 -Lodge 130 held its annual campout October 27, 28 and 29 at Fort Parker State Park. The campout was done, for the first time, this year in conjunction with KJT No. 111. It was a great success.

It began Friday, October 27 with check - in at 6 p.m. and a Presidents' reception sponsored jointly by Ken Vrla, SPJST Lodge 130 president and David Hlavenka, KJT 111 president.

We had about 50 people, 15 of whom were children, arrive that evening to take part in the weekend activities.

The activities on Saturday included pumpkin carving for the dads, grandpas, volunteers and kids. They did a super job. The youth clubs prepared lunch and helped with cookie making for the Halloween Party that evening.

While the pumpkin carving was going on, all the moms, grandmas and volunteers decorated the recreation hall for the party. The youth leaders thank you for all your creative ideas and help.

That evening there was quite a gathering at the party. We had ghosts and ghouls, witches, spiders, black cats, gypsies, cheerleaders, Pop - eye and Olive Oil, a pair of dice and one

unusual character disguised as an "iron worker."

All the kids, young and old, enjoyed goodies and games, scary music, eerie glowing pumpkins and lots of fun. The party concluded with a bonfire where we roasted marshmallows and smores.

Then we all ventured into the dark spooky cemetery for a "snipe hunt."

Everyone had a great scare and lots of fun.

Campout concluded Sunday with a Continental breakfast. The youth leaders of both lodges would like to thank all those volunteers who helped with the activities during campout. We couldn't have done it without them.

Our next regular monthly meeting is scheduled for Sunday, December 10th.

This will be our lodge Christmas Party. The meat, dressing and beverages will be provided by our lodge for the dinner. All members are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert. This year the members voted to do our exchanging of gifts a little differently; instead of exchanging gifts among ourselves we will be bringing a new unwrapped toy and a food item to be given to the needy children and their families in our area. So come to the party with lots of Christmas spirit.

Lodge 133, San Antonio enjoyed its annual Thanksgiving dinner on November 19th at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center. A traditional turkey dinner with trimmings was prepared by Joe and Viola Spacek, Emil and Evelyn Matula and Bob and Jarolyn Popp.

The meeting commenced at 1:50 p.m. Brother Anthony Trilicek welcomed Brother Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy, to Lodge 133.

Various committee reports were given. Sister Viola Kurtz reported that the following members celebrated anniversaries, namely: September -- Alvin and Frances Schimcek (43 years), Tom and Doris Moczygemba (46 years) October -- Alfred and Henrietta Kalmus (53 years), George and Genevieve Schultz (43 years) November -- James and Mary Kostelnik (67 years), August and Mary Blanar (67 years), William and Gertrude Pavliska (46 years), Charles and Viola Kurtz (4 years), Joe and Annie Stryk (42 years), Jim and Shirley Burrows (9 years).

Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik is back in the nursing home after a brief stay in Nix Hospital. Both he and his wife, Marcella, are doing better. Brother Emil Matula also reported that Brother August Blanar was doing well.

His wife, Mary Blanar, is still recuperating in the nursing home.

The members enthusiastically welcomed Brother Leonard Mikeska.

He was invited to make some comments. Brother Mikeska extended greetings from the Supreme Lodge and congratulated Sister Viola Kurtz on being the "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge 133. He also recognized Brother Emil Matula who served on the Publication Committee for twelve years.

Brother Mikeska went on to compliment Lodge 133 for the fraternalism it manifested. He was also glad the lodge was having a' meeting to

which prospective members would be invited. He further emphasized the importance of protecting the lodge system by making people feel that they belong and are cared for. It is equally important to keep the Czech heritage alive. Brother Mikeska then informed the members that the Supreme Lodge was setting goals for 1997. There will be an emphasis on increased production, increased membership and increased volume.

No 155 Austin Reports

The regular meeting of Lodge No. 155 was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sponberg, 4712 Caswell on Sunday, November 5, 1989 at 2:30 p.m.

Brother President Clarence Boriski called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag led by Brother Sponberg.

Roll call of officers indicated all present.

Minutes of previous meeting were approved on motion duly made, seconded and passed.

Communications read were SPJST Guidelines and Procedures "Fraternalist of the Year Award," letter from Supreme Lodge President, Brother Leshikar, thanking our lodge for donations of $25 each for Czech Chair and Battleship of Texas restoration, letter of thanks from Ludma Kopecky for inviting her to meeting held at the Prasatiks, thanks from Woody Smith (instructor of Slavonic languages at the University of Texas) for our contribution to the "PodlOan" from Czechoslovakia for their excellent musical and dancing performance at Bates Hall at UT in the new Performing Arts Center, John B. Heji expressed his appreciation of, and on behalf of other members who attended, the remarkable Podlu2an staged performance, and an expression of thanks from the family of Georgia Mae Robertson.

Brother President Boriski called attention to the Fraternalist of the Year Award which is given in recognition of a member's outstanding service, accomplishment and dedication to fraternalism. Brother Boriski placed the name of Raymond Prasatik in nomination as the most qualified of our members serving 54 years, and was elected to serve another year, as secretary. He was also financial secretary all the years until "Direct Billing" was initiated by the Supreme Lodge. His name is being sent to the Supreme Lodge for consideration. Brother Prasatik humbly accepted the unanimous vote of this lodge with words of gratitude and thanks.

The Nominating Committee, namely, Mina Sponberg, Gary Chmelir and Marianna Hejl presented the following slate of officers for 1990: President -- Clarence Boriski Vice President -- Gary Chmelir Secretary -- Raymond Prasatik Treasurer -- John B. Heji Reporter -- Alice Prasatik A motion was made and seconded they be elected by acclamation.

It was agreed that our Christmastime donations to charities be the same as last year as follows: SPJST Rest Home No. I in Taylor, Salvation Army Shoe Fund, Battered Women, and Austin State School. It was agreed that checks be prepared by our Treasurer John B. Hejl to be mailed prior to Christmas.

Motion made by John B. Hejl that meeting be adjourned.

A delicious chili and tamale supper with desserts was prepared and served by host and hostess Charles and Mina Sponberg. After refreshments, we had the opportunity to view Mina's artistic talent in the beautifully finished products of her original personal designed Christmas stockings (7 or 9) for each member of their family.

No. 191, Lufkin

Lodge

On November 11, 1989, Lodge 191 held its annual President's Ball. There was a very large crowd of ladies and gents who turned out in all their finery to be a part of this dance. The music was provided by the Henry Tannenberger Orchestra from Houston. This orchestra has provided music for several years now and, as usual, did a fine job.

The food, provided by Linda Kahl of Hudson, was really good. The menu included chicken breast, tossed salad, a wild rice dish and homemade rolls.

The dessert was pumpkin pie, pecan pie and cheese cake.

This seems to have been another successful dance and everyone should be looking forward to next year.

We now have our memorial plaque up at the entrance and it has several engraved plates on it already. It is very attractive - looking with the picture light above it.

We will be having only one country western dance at the lodge in December. It will be December 16 at 8 p.m., with Terry and The Travelers providing music.

Square dancers will have a dance on December 2nd, and with Christmas coming up, there will be several private parties.

Hope all of you had a happy and filling Thanksgiving.

These are important dates to remember: (December 1, we made chains for Moody Nursing Home; December 2, we met in West at 8 a.m. for the "Holiday - in - the - Park and attended District III Party at Lodge 84 in Dallas; December 4 and December 5, we had program practice.)

Our youth members were busy in November. We had a program practice on November 28, and we had highway cleanup on our Adopt - A - Highway Program. This was a new experience and challenge for us.

The youth also participated in a Fund - Raiser for District IV Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger. The youth donated crafts and other articles for the auction. I am proud of you for supporting this function.

The November birthday cake was brought by Jamie Williams. We also had the December birthdays. The cake was brought by Butch Wigley.

The door prize was won by Matthew Pavlicek and Nathan Tierce.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 13 Dime Box Monthly Meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 13 in Dime Box held their monthly meeting on Sunday, November 19, 1989 at 2 p.m.

Susan Spacek called the meeting to order and then the pledge was led by Sue Ellen Flippin.

Trudy Krenek read the minutes of the last meeting and Jennifer Gold gave the treasurer's report.

Mrs. Ford reported that Sue Ellen Flippin got first in SPJST candy sales and Nicholas Rackel got second; they will each receive a prize.

Some of our activities planned in December are decorating the hall, going Christmas caroling, and a party to exchange gifts which should cost about $2.50.

Lamanda Kostelka received a certificate for winning first place in the District I Christmas Tree Ornament Contest.

Door prize winners were Darden Hervey, Aaron Hervey and Wesley Ford.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone was treated to a soda water.

Lodge 130 Dallas Youth Club The youth club held its November meeting on Sunday, November 19 at the home of their youth leader.

We worked on Christmas ornaments and decorated a box to collect toys to be given to needy children in our area.

After the meeting, the children enjoyed a pizza party at Showbiz.

The Youth Christmas Party will be held together with the Mother Lodge Christmas Party. The children also drew names to exchange gifts during the party.

Youth Club members will meet on December 10 at 3 p.m. at the lodge to decorate the Christmas tree and prepare for our party.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 79 of Corpus Christi, Texas on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister ANNIE HENRIETTA ELSIK LAZA, of Kingsville, who died Tuesday, June 6, 1989 in a Kingsville hospital, at the age of 96 years, 8 months and 1 day.

Sister Laza was born October 5, 1892 near Shiner, the daughter of Joseph "Joe" and Teresa (Tichaysky) Elsik, natives respectively of Moravia, Czechoslovakia and Fayetteville, Texas. Her father came to America with other members of his immediate family in 1879, settling first in Fayetteville before coming to Shiner.

Her father was first married to Veronika Kucera. Two children were born to this union. After her death, he then married Teresa Ticha ysky. Six children were born to the second union.

The Joe Elsik family moved from Shiner to Kingsville in 1914 where Annie was united in marriage to Frank Laza on July 24, 1917. Her husband, a native of Czechoslovakia, had moved to Kingsville in 1914 from Shiner and worked for the Missouri - Pacific Railroad until he retired. He died August 25, 1978.

Funeral services for Mrs. Laza were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at Turcote Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Donald Boyd, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial followed in Chamberlain Cemetery in Kingsville, Texas.

Surviving are one son, Frank L. Laza and his wife, the former Anna Wheat, of San Antonio; two grandchildren, Ronald and Patricia Laza; four great - grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, her husband, her mother (January 22, 1932); three brothers, Charles Elsik in 1960, Louis Steve Elsik (September 26, 1976), Frank J. Elsik (January 20, 1967); one half brother, Joe L. Elsik (February 24, 1964); two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Teresa) Ondrej (August 14, 1982) and one who died in infancy and one half - sister, Mrs. Tom (Mary) Laza in August, 1963.

Sister Annie Laza transferred from Lodge No. 118, Kingsville to Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi when Lodge No. 118 disbanded several years ago.

She outlived her policy October 5, 1988 when she reached the age of 96 years.

Sister Laza was an old - timer in Kingsville.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth, Texas wish to express heartfelt sympathy, on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of FARMER LAYMANCE, of 2704 N.W. 26th Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76106, who passed away on November 25, 1989, at the age of 80 years.

Brother Laymance was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92 and was manager of the lodge hall at one time.

Survivors include his wife, Ima Tom Laymance; daughter, Toy Lea Owen; sons, Roger Dale Laymance, all of Fort Worth and Donald Ray Laymance of Decatur; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m.

Monday, November 27 at Greenwood Chapel. Chaplain Tom Hollingsworth Interment officiated. was at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Greenwood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard, Texas on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother ALBERT E. SPACEK, age 87 years, who died Monday, November 20, 1989 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton, Texas.

Funeral services for Brother Albert Spacek, of East Bernard, were held Wednesday,November 22 at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church at East Bernard, with Msgr. John Kukral officiating and assisted by Rev. Joe Vrana and Rev. Henry Rachunek.

Interment followed in Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard.

Rosary was recited Tuesday evening, November 21 at 7 p.m. in Davis Dawson Chapel, East Bernard.

Brother Spacek was born November 1, 1902 in Yugoslavia. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 28, and Knights of Columbus (Third Degree) No. 2500.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Albina Spacek of East Bernard; one sister, Josephine Marik of East Bernard; sisters - in - law, Lillie Foitik of Floresville and Frances Lindholm of Rockport.

Pallbearers were Joe Spacek of Bellville, Jerome Spacek of Houston, Joe Spacek of Houston, Edwin Marik, J.P. Marik, Gene Marik, all of East Bernard.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis - Dawson Funeral Home in East Bernard.

May our lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Sister King was born July 12, 1963 in Corpus Christi, Texas and moved to Kansas City in 1980. She was a cosmetologist, a former member of the Trinity Baptist Church and was active in scuba diving, tennis, racquetball, she was also a member of SPJST. She is survived by her parents, James B. and Loretta King of Corpus Christi, Texas; two brothers and sisters - in - law, Greg and Julie King of Corpus Christi, Texas, Rick and Karen King of Norfolk, Virginia; her maternal grandmother, Nina Burris of Kingsville, Texas; her fiancee, Dr. Gary Taney of Kansas City, Missouri; aunts and uncles, Lowell and Jean Burris, Ronald and Debby Burris, Harold and Karen Burris, all of Kingsville, Texas, Bill and Anne King of Vidor, Texas, Marie Baker, June Thornberry and Arlene Warren, all of Corpus Christi, Texas, plus many cousins and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Seaside Mausoleum, with Rev. B. Linn Self officiating. Burial followed in Seaside Memorial Park.

Brother Buzek was retired from Harris County Auditor's and Tax Departments. He served in World War I and worked with the needy ones.

Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Buzek and Geraldine Powell; two grandsons and five great grandchildren.

Interment was in Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, Texas.

Sister Tobola was born February 6, 1919 in McLennan County, Texas to Fred and Marie Zahirniak. She married Ernest J. Tobola, Sr. on August 5, 1940 in Waco. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1986. She was a housewife and homemaker.

Sister Tobola was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption of West, and a member of SPJST Lodge 54 since July 28, 1966.

Survivors include two sons, Ernest Tobola, Jr. and Harry Lee Tobola, both of West; three daughters, Betty Chudej and Patsy Jones, both of West, and Kathy Lozano of Penelope; one brother, Harry Zahirniak of West; two sisters, Irene Votaw and Judy Rosenauer, both of Waco; 15 grandchildren; 9 great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were her grandsons.

MIKESKA, of 2301 McGuire Avenue, Haltom City, Texas 76117, who died Thursday, November 23, 1989 at a Fort Worth hospital, at the age of 76.

Brother Mikeska was born in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas and moved to Fort Worth area in the 1930s. He was a retired auto paint and body repairman. He was a Lutheran, and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Mikeska of Haltom City; two sons, Mike Mikeska of Austin and Milton Mikeska of Fort Worth; two sisters, Fannie Beach of Fort Worth and Marian Holubec of Granger and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. on November 25, 1989 in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mount Olivet Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BEN V. SCHILLER, SR., age 81, passed away Saturday, November 18, 1989, in Golden Age Manor Nursing Home on Bellfort in Houston. Texas.

Mr. Schiller was born to Vince and Bertha Wetzel Schiller in Lott, Texas on July 6, 1908. As an adult, he worked as a farmer around Temple, Alvin and Bay City, Texas until he married Elizabeth (Betty) Lejsal on November 26, 1940. They lived in Houston and had four children -- two sons and two daughters. He worked as a warehouse maintenance man for Feld Warehouse for 32 years and retired in 1973.

He was a member of SPJST for 48 years and was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

Rosary was recited on Monday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, November 21 at 10 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Houston. Celebrants were Rev. Gene Francis of St. John Neumann and Rev. Gary F. Wanzong of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Houston. Burial was in the Garden of Gethsemene in Forest Park Cemetery on Lawndale under the direction of Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home.

Features Surnames of the Fren gtat Area

by Kevin Hannan In 1850 the Moravian town of Fren g tat became the seat of a judicial district which included, the following villages: Bordovice, Cedadna, Kozlovice, Velke Kuneice, Lichnov, Merkovice, Ticha, Trojanovice and Vleovice. The town is known today as Fren§tat pod Radho gtem "Frengtat beneath Radho§f," and it lies at the foot of Mount Radho§e, one of Moravia's greatest national landmarks. Here are found the Moravian -Silesian Beskyd Mountains, a range of the Carpathians. Fren gtat and surrounding villages lie near the border of the ethnographic regions of Lasko and Valag sko. Though the area is known for its natural beauty, it traditionally has been difficult to earn a living from the rocky mountain soil. Much of the population emigrated in the 19th century. Many natives of Frentat and surrounding villages settled in Texas.

Of interest to genealogists and researchers is the book NARECI NA FRENSTATSKU By Franti§ek Horeeka. The book, whose title translates as Dialects of the Frengtat Area, was published in Frenkat in 1941. A great deal of interesting information on the speech of the Fren§tat area is found in the book. The author notes, for example, that the Czech sound "f" was not common there until the 19th century. Prior to this the population used the consonant "r", as in neighboring Slovak dialects.

NARECI NA FRENSTATSKU contains lists of common surnames from the Fren§tat area. The author has also isolated the most common surnames found in some of the neighboring villages. This information can be of great help to genealogists, particularly those wishing to narrow down a surname to a particular village in the Fren§tat area or find the correct spelling of a surname.

Some of the surnames are uniquely Moravian; some are found only in the Frengtat area. Others, such as those derived from Christian names, appear in other parts of Moravia and in Bohemia as well. Nearly all of these surnames are found in Texas, which offers proof of the close links between

As noted above the letter "I" only appeared in the common speech in the 19th century and the names above which appear with this letter, such as Safaffk and Srubaf, were pronounced with the Slovak "r", as Safarik and Srubar. In the Lachian dialect there are no lengthened vowels as in Czech and natives of the Fren gtdt area would pronounce the names as if written without the earka ( "), as Sedlaeek and Fojtagek.

A further atingurshing characteristic of Lachian dialect is a fixed accent on the second - to - last syllable, as in Polish and as survives today among most speakers of Czech in Texas.

Horeeka's list of Fren gtdt surnames includes the following which derive from the names of towns and villages: Bordovs14, Lichnovs14, TichaysI4, KozelsI4, Kuneick, Pustejovslqr (in this case fromt he village Puste'jov u Bilovce), Ro2novsk3'7, Sackr, Teginskr, Zdrs14, Myslikovjan, Fulnek, Hranick, Lhotsk, Polach, Polans14.

The following derive from names for natural sites, such as groves, ponds, etc.: Kalul'a, Paseka, Horeeka, Kopelec, ZdvodO, LipovsI4, Dubovs14, Bfezina, Chalupa, Pustka, Koneen, Vrba, Hru gka, Rohan, Hradeenr.

These surnames relate to physical and other characteristics of a person: Cernoch, Bin (also Ben), Hlavde, Rek, Reeek, Hrubi g , Cervenka, Maly, Meng fk, Hrbde, Tuer4. , Svreek, Malina, Rulieka, Mu is nr, Hubdeek, Sloboda, Rygka. It can be presumed that these characteristics described an ancestor of each of these families in the period during which surnames were

first adopted. In mountainous and more remote areas some people did not acquire surnames until the late 16th century.

Some surnames derive from the names of birds: Huska, HD, Cermak, Holub, Kdria, Drozd, Pliska, Ragka, Kalus, Kruta, Skfivanek, Strnadel, Kutatko.

These are from the names of animals: Vleek, Li gka, Macek, Mucha, Baran.

The following indicate national origin: tech, Nemec, Nemeeek, Handk, Slovak, Turek, Francuz.

Presumably ancestors of these families had immigrated from, lived in or served in the army in these lands. It should be noted here that some surnames can have more than one origin, such as the name Handl which has already appeared in two different lists above. According to Horeeka the name can derive from the female Christian name Hanna, in the sense that this was the mother's name of the individual who first bore this surname. Or it might also derive from the name of the Moravian region of Hand and indicate that a family's ancestor lived in or had some connection to this region. Not all sources agree on surname origins and some other sources contradict the information found in Horeeka's Ndfeef na Frengtatsku.

Some surnames refer to an action or activity: Pfibyla, Nevfela, Bumbala, Drdpala, Dostitl, Navrat, Vyvijal.

These are past tense verbs in Moravian speech. The verb bumbat', for example, means to drink in a loud and slovenly manner. The name Bumbala then would literally translate as "she drank in a loud and slovenly manner."

The masculine ending " 1" and the feminine ending "-la" indicate the past tense of a verb. In Lachian dialect, as in the speech of Vala gsko, Slovacko and Poland, a distinction is made between a "hard 1" and a "soft 1." The I found in the past tense of verbs resembles the English consonant "w."

The name Bumbala then in Lachian dialect would be pronounced bum BAH - wah, with the accent on the middle syllable. In Czech it would sound as BUM - bah - lah. Surnames derived from verbs are some of the most humorous. One of my favorites, also from the Fren gtat area, is Nehnevajsa. This translates as the imperative form or command: "Don't get angry."

The following are surnames of various origins: Hrachoq, Makoq, Kopliva, Pragivka, Kobliha, Zavorka, Slanina, Motyka, Sekyra, Sobotik, Konvieka, Hurt, Hurtfk, Kalich, Jezfg ek, Kadera, Kaderka, Trunkat, Drkula, Sablatura, Pragae, Rajnoch, Krabic, Zrubek, Lojkasek, Buzek, Kalmus, Matera, Sivic, Grygar, VefmefovsI4, Valigura, Mocek, Smahlfk. Though Horeeka does not mention it, some of these names are of Slovak, Polish, Ruthenian and Ukranian origin and are probably related to the colonization of parts of the Freng tat area by Valach shePiterds.

These surnames appear commonly in both of the counties of Fren gtdt and RoInov: Frnka, Michna, Jurajda, Kramoli g , etc.

Of Polish origin: Piekarczyk, Ceslik.

Of Italian origin: Vignatti, Luchezi. Of German origin: Bajer, Majer, Edelsberger, Richtr, Gilar, Graf, Franz, Klein, Klekner, Hegrat, Milberger, Knebl, Gerlich, Krigke.

The oldest sources which have survived frornthe 17th century and contain information about guilds to which craftsmen and tradesmen belonged list these surnames: Michna, Havrlant, Srubaf, Hutika, Mocek, Knezek,

Kalus, Fiala, Chalupa, Mechl, Vagica, Strnadel, Tue0.

Several surnames arose from words in dialect whose origin is nearly unrecognizable today. Especially during the period of Austrian rule, Moravian dialects preserved their own unique vocabularies. The following are words from the Lachian dialect of the Frengtat area: Blahut: fool, crazy man Burda: a loud, vociferous person Ceslik: carpenter, fromthe Polish Frriak, frrika: large nose; a person with a large nose Formanek: drake Havrl'ant: a loud person; a child which cries constantly Kramoli g : a person who works hard, from the Polish Mikganik, mfganfk: a person who left his sheep throughout the summer at a "salag " mixed with other sheep; from the vocabulary of Valach shepherds.

The words listed above form only a part of Horeeka's vocabulary. These few examples illustrate, however, that some surnames derived from local dialect and were thus unique to the area.

Of special interest to genealogists are the following lists, in which Horeeka has isolated the most common surnames for several of the villages surrounding Frengtat.

These are the most common surnames in Trojanovice: Adameik, Baea, Brodovsk3'7, Cada, Gajdu gek, Dobiag, Holub, Kalia, Kurec, Mikeska, Pargae, Rajnoch, Rek, Strnadel, Sablatura, Smajstrla, Uhldf, Vagut, Zdrs14.

The most common surnames in Kuneice: Kandriek, Stefek, Tomdnek, Pavliska, Vdlek, Blaiek, Mucha, Foltas, Maralik, Michna, Slahorek, Cajdnek, Tabagek, Boruta.

In Tichd: Havel, Srdmek, Drozd, Svreek, Genzer, Kupefk, Konvieka, Holub, Janda, Kopelec.

In Bordovice: Kopelec, Veselka, Halugka, Stepan, Ka gparek, Spaeek, Drozd, Hutyra, Jurek.

In Lichnov: Tichays14., Pustejovskjr, Stiborek, Jaluvka, Bohde, Pavel.

In Kozlovice: Spaeek, Drozd, Rek, Holub, Veselka, Kahanek, Zdeek, Bora, Mfeek, Uledk.

The information listed above should be of great help to genealogists. Most of these surnames are common in Texas.

Because a village often contained numerous families with the same surname, names were often modified to distinguish the different families. A word, which often referred to the head of the household's occupation or the location of the family's home, was added to the surname. This new name, consisting of the original surname plus another descriptive name or designation, in effect became the surname by

which the family was known. This was strictly colloquial, however, and these new names were not likely to appear in church or village records. In some cases, however, the original surname was dropped, probably because there were more than one person in a village sharing the same surname and Christian name, and this new designation, originally only added to the surname, became the new surname. This practice of adding names to surnames was also known in Texas. In the Ennis community, for example, where there are numerous families of Slovaks, various names were appended to the surname Slovak to distinguish families.

Horeeka lists different designations which were appended to surnames in Trojanovice and Lichnov to distinguish families with the same surnames. In Trojanovice these were names given to differnet Srubaf families: Srubaf - Bafiriak, Srubaf Cmerek, Srubaf - Ko garek, etc. The Spaeek families of Lichnov were called: Spaeek - Kunetka, Spaeek Lanik, Spaeek - Kolafieek, Spaeek Cymbaliste, etc. Horeeka cites numerous examples of this practice.

In colloquial speech surnames could be altered to express disgust or contempt. Although this is not reflected in written records, it is of interest in that it shows the subtlety and richness of expression found in Moravian speech and generally, in all Slavic languages. The following are forms of a surname which express contempt: Parma: Parmjak, Parmeeka Poldgek: Polajdra Janda: Jandatek Bumbala: Bumbalik Horeeka mentions a great fluxation in population in the Fren gtat area, which is reflected in the surnames which are found there. He cites some of the causes of emigration in the past century. The largest wave of emigration occurred after 1880, with the mechanization of the cloth industry.

Few inhabitants of the region had ever been able to support themselves exclusively by farming. The manufacture of cloth, shoes and clothing was a thriving cottage industry until mechanization changed things. After 1880 workers emigrated to Fulnek, Sternberk and America. The growth of the mining industry in the Ostrava area also attracted workers from Fren gtat in this period.

There were also instances of immigration to the area. Some settlements date to recent centuries, such as Trojanovice, settled in the 18th century. Valachs from territories in the east played a significant role in the settlement and population of the Frengtat area, as is proven by surnames which indicate some relationship to the Valachs.

Czechs from the business and administrative classes settled in the area in the 19th century. Italians came to the area to build a railroad in 1887-89.

Several Poles and Russians married girls from the Fren gtat area and settled there after World War One. There was a continuous exchange of population between Fren gtat and the neighboring county of Roinov, due to intermarriage and resettlement of spouses after marriage.

Franti gek Horeeka's Naleef na Frengatsku contains a great wealth of information about the Fren gtat area.

The information on surnames should be of invaluable help to genealogists.

This book offers additional proof that, in historical and cultural impact as well as in sheer numbers, Fren gtat was one of the most important centers of Czech - Moravian immigration to Texas.

Hospodaf byl tak pfevzat s daverou, novji majitel male oeekavat podporu a porozumeni aeriau a podporovatela Hospodafe. Ceska pisnidka, Po starYch zarneckYch schodech, Petatficatnici, Nad Prahou tandily hvezday a dal g i pisrte dodnes zname maji spoledneho autora — deskeho pisnidkafe a fierce Karla Na g lera. Narodil se prave pled 110 lety, 31. fijna 1879.

Karel Ha g ler vyrOstal v proste, obydejne rodin8 iijici na Zlichove. Vzdalene obrysy tajemne Prahy ho ut od detstvi velmi pfitahovaly. Krasu mesta i ptIvab jeho zakouti zadal averne poznavat a vnimat za studii na me g tanske g kole a ph udeni v rukavidkafske dilne.

HEREC Karel Ha g ler byl pfedev g im hercem. Brzy totii pochopil, te rukavidkafske femeslo ho neuspokojuje. Prostfednictvim sveho kamarada se nahodou dostal do ochotnickeho krouiku Radoslav a divadlo jej dasem natolik pfitahlo, ie opustil femeslo, domov i milovanou Prahu a protloukal se s venkovskymi divadelnimi spolednostmi po deskYch zemich a Morava.
