Thanksgiving Day is practically on us to be followed almost immediately

by Christmas and New Year. It is also a time for reflecting on what we have accomplished, personally and as a fraternal benefit society, in the past and, especially, in this past year. As a society, we have learned that we need to improve some in order to "stay the course." It is easy to blame others for errors in judgment, however, it is each person's duty to be able to say to themselves and others: "The fault is actually mine; I should have seen the error and found a way to correct it!

The buck stops here!"

We have the future ahead of us; let us use it wisely and with serious intelligence for the good of our Society.

May all of you have a nice Thanksgiving spent in happiness, good health and with a peaceful attitude. *** Latch Key Kids -- "I sometimes get lonely and scared" was the response of one young boy to a question about the bad feelings of staying home alone.

Feelings such as loneliness, boredom, fear and frustration are all normal feelings and, yes, there are several ways of coping with them.

Loneliness can be avoided by writing letters, calling friends (if permitted by parents) and getting involved in projects. A pet welcoming the child home seems to do wonders since the house doesn't seem as empty.

As for boredom, children play safe games, watch television and get their homework and chores "over with."

Every parent's dream response came from one girl who said "I clean the house when I'm bored."

The most common fear expressed by the children was the fear experienced when first entering the house.

"If everything around the house looks okay, tour the house and reassure yourself and you'll feel better for the rest of the time."

Another fear expressed was when someone hangs up the phone when the child answers. "If someone bothers you on the phone, hang up," if the annoyance continues, parents should be notified immediately.

"A straight talk with Mom or Dad also helps children deal with their negative feelings. The steps children should follow when talking to parents are: Tell them what you think the problem is Tell them how you feel Say what you think needs to be done to solve the problem Keep your temper under control Carefully pick the time when you tell your parents about the problem; don't bombard them the minute they return home If you find the problem difficult to talk about, write it down.

Children should not carry keys in their pockets since they can be lost easily. Keys should be hung around their necks or fastened to key chains that attach to belt loops and slip into pockets. Never write the child's name and address on the key, and make sure that a spare key is available with a contact person, such as a neighbor, who is easily accessible to the child.

Children should also lock all doors and windows once they are in the house.

Strangers should never be allowed into the house under any circumstance.

Children should learn not to feel bad about saying no to a stranger who wants to enter the home. If a repairman comes to the door, the child should call a parent and check with him first before letting the repairman inside the house. Informing the child beforehand if a service person -is expected is also advisable. For deliveries, the child can request that the delivery be given to a neighbor.

Children should never tell anyone that the parents are not at home, but rather that the parents are unable to answer the message, if any, and hang up. The child should not engage in any lengthy explanations to the caller or a person at the door.

Children should not use sharp utensils and the stove or oven. Keeping cold snacks available and easily accessible is the best way to ensure that the child will not be tempted to use the stove.

The children should know and/or have emergency telephone numbers readily available to them. A list of emergency numbers should be located as close to the phone as possible. If the children cannot remember or find the numbers, they can always dial zero (or in some cases 911) for the operator for assistance.

When talking to the telephone emergency operator, the child should know to provide his name, his complete address and a description of the emergency situation. After the ;hild has provided this information, he needs to wait for the operator to verify the call.

Poisonous substances (cleaners, medications, etc.) should be kept out of children's reach. However, if a poisoning does occur, children should be taught to call a Poison Control Center number before trying to treat the poisoning. A supply of Syrup of Ipecac should be kept in the house and the child needs to know where it is kept in case vomiting needs to be induced.

In case of fire, the child should gather his or her siblings and run out of the house, go to the nearest phone and dial the emergency number or the operator. The child should be instructed not to use the phone inside the house. If the smoke is overwhelming, the children should crawl out of the house since hot air and smoke rises.

Fire extinguishers should be handy and children should learn beforehand how to operate them. Children should also learn to distinguish between fires they can put out with an extinguisher and those they need to run away from and contact the fire department about.

Fire alarms and extinguishers should be checked at least monthly.

Children should be taught what a gas leak smells like and what to do if one occurs when they are home alone.

If a leak occurs, children should open all windows and doors and leave the house immediately. Once outside, they need to call the gas company or the operator.

Flashlights with fresh batteries should be accessible and children should be shown where they are kept.

Candles should not be used because of the danger of fire.

A complete first aid kit should be available in the house and the parents should show the children where it is kept and go over the contents of the kit with the children.

Parents establish rules and guidelines for their children to ensure both a safe and comfortable time. A neighbor, easily accessible to the child is advisable in case the parents cannot be reached.

SFR Helen Hegwood conducted the seminars assisted by District V Director Louis Hanus. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote advanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they address

SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations such as SPJST is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST does require its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Miss Houdek's Dolls At Home In SPJST Museum A collection of forty - four (44) dolls in Czech costumes "kroje" were donated to the SPJST Museum by Miss Agnes Houdek of Ennis - Dallas area.

The costumes were made by Miss Houdek and each represents the

traditional dress of a particular village or section of Czechoslovakia.

Miss Agnes Houdek insured their authenticity through research and painstakingly searching for supplies to duplicate the costumes.

A friend made some of the little boots, another hand - knitted the stockings, and still another furnished the handmade Bobbin lace.

The rest of the "kroj" (costume) was made by Miss Houdek who started in 1958 making the costumes as memorial to her mother who had come

from the Bohemia or Cechy part of Czechoslovakia.

Most of the costumes are from Moravia or Slovakia because the Bohemian costumes are not as colorful.

Miss Houdek visited Czechoslovakia in 1919 for three months and, again in 1927, for thirty days.

Miss Houdek attended St. John's School in Ennis, then graduated from Ennis High School in 1924.

She worked for The Hospodar, a Czech periodical semi - monthly paper (during that time), correcting letters in the Czech language, then she was a Czech correspondant for Dr. Charles J. Holub, a Czechoslovkian representative for Texas and Southwest United States.

After moving to Dallas, Miss Houdek was involved in the Circle of Czech Women, an organization dedicated to preserve Czech culture and support many non - Czech civic enterprises. The Circle was very active in support of the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas and worked in support of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, Texas.

Miss Agnes Houdek wrote a weekly CZECH COLUMN in the VESTNIK any without years for 26 compensation. Several persons indicated that they learned to read and speak better Czech by reading her very informative and very interesting articles on topics in general.

Miss Houdek died April 5, 1989 in an Ennis nursing home, leaving her large array collection of dolls in Czech "kroje" (costumes) to the SPJST Museum in Temple, Texas, which is open Monday through Friday (except weekends or holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This doll collection has been displayed and viewed by numerous spectators in Caldwell, Temple, Fayetteville and Pasadena, Texas.

Scores of people have also wondered at the detail of Miss Houdek's sewing ability and the beauty of the costumes that are precious and priceless to the SPJST Society and who is deeply indebted to her brother, Joe Houdek in Dallas, Texas.

Dear Members: The regular meeting of Lodge 15 was opened by President Shiller asking Brother Jerry Mikulas to lead members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Shiller welcomed guests Dan Balusek, Gene Marak, Thomas Harwell, Elyven Phannstiel, Thelma Groppell, Lilly Zajicek, Ella Mae Cross and a very special welcome to Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas.

Brother Mikulas was so kind to give us a talk about direct billing. Thank you, Jerry, our lodge will start direct billing in January, 1990.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Arthur Cross and "Happy Anniversary" was wished to Anton and Charlsie Svetlik.

Anna Marak was on the sick list.

Hope you are feeling better by now.

A new committee was appointed to make a new set of Rules and Regulations. They are Gladys Allison, Charlsie Svetlik, Arthur Cross, Kathleen Jurca and Jimmy Hank.

Before the election, the old officers and chairmen resigned and want to thank everyone who helped in our years of service to the lodge.

News

Our November meeting was called to order by President John Motal.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, followed by a moment of silence for our departed members and roll call of officers.

Lodge No. 32 members enjoyed the fall social in Hillje. Thanks to all the workers who made this fun occasion possible.

We extend get well wishes to our President John Motal. John has been in a Houston hospital and is now being treated on an outpatient basis. We really appreciate him coming to preside over our meeting while he is not totally up to par; also Sister Kathryn Wokaty has been in a local hospital. Our Christmas Party will be held Sunday, December 3rd at the Community Center Annex. A meal will be served at 2 p.m., with the lodge furnishing the ham, bread, coffee and tea Each family is asked to bring a side dish and a dessert.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The lodge annual meeting was held on Sunday, November 12, 1989, one week later than usual with President George Pavelka opening the assembly at 1 p.m.

Flag Bearers James Kortis and David Koslovsky, substituting for Gary Skrabanek, brought in the flags and led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence for Sister Agnes Pavlica De Palma. May we honor her memory always and deepest sympathy to the survivors.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Della Marinik, Freddie Schroeder and Tammy Pechal, my new daughter - in - law. Please make plans to come, again, soon. Also one hundred members attended the meeting.

Roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives were read by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek.

Those who were hospitalized, since the last meeting, were Brothers Edwin Jez, Albert (J.R.) Glaser and Frank D. Mikeska (who had surgery the afternoon of our meeting) and Sisters Georgia Sodek, Vlasta Divis, Antonia Orsag and Anna Christine Junek.

Here's hoping you are all improving daily and better health will soon be yours.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek then read the minutes of the October 8th meeting. A question of the painting of the hall without the vote of the membership was aired.

Correspondence was the "thank you" card from the Agnes De Palma family for flowers.

We accepted Brother Theodore Yezak as a new member. Here's inviting you to come to the meetings and other activities; you are a regular at the Saturday night dances. Welcome to the lodge!

The reports of the officers and chairpersons were good and the audit report for the third quarter was given

by Brother Elmer Skrabanek.

FAC Brother Tim Reese invited everyone to the family night social Friday, November 17th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. He said that dominoes and Taroky will be played, so everyone would be in practice before the tournaments. He is also in charge of the Christmas Party, decorating, cooking, serving and cleanup Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the second Sunday in December, so if you are willing to help, you need to sign up.

The youth club report was given by Sister Patsy Koslovsky. Vice President E.J. Pechal presided in the absence of

President Jason Reese; 29 members, 4 visitors and 3 adults were present and all of these welcomed Brandon Bartek as a new member. The bike - a - thon raised $200 and this was divided equally between the Czech Chair and Battleship of Texas. The candy sale was highly successful, also the youth will present the program for the Christmas Party on December 10th at 3 p.m., so make plans to be there on time and not miss it.

Sisters Lucy Mihatsch and Adeline Kohutek and Brother Dan Balusek spoke and stated that they will not accept any position as officers nor trustees.

Brothers Willie E. Kohutek and Frank Klinkovsky and Sister Claudette Reese spoke briefly.

Under old business, we outlined the Christmas Party -- Youth Program at 3 p.m.; Happy Hour, 4 p.m; supper, 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 10th.

Salads and sweets are to be brought by members as usual.

New business included the selection of the Balloting Committee with Sister Dolores Skrabanek as chairman, Joe Mikeska, Ann Hejl, Tom Gibson, Wallace Jez, Frank Janacek and Leon Zavodny.

Lodge Tyts No. 80, Holland It was a pleasure to attend our Lodge 80 meeting on Sunday, November 5, with a fairly good attendance.

President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with all officers present, after Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remaining standing for a moment in silence to honor our members Boyce Umberhagen and Bertha Balusek who passed away since our October meeting. May the Tsouls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

First order of business was the reading of the minutes of the October meeting. They were approved as read

by Secretary Latham.

Vice President Harold Rhode reported the fund - raising day held on Saturday, October 21, was a great success. He thanked all who had any part in making it so. He was given a standing ovation for making it a success that it was.

President Bohac asked if there were any new members accepted. There were no new members, but we had two members with transfers. They are Ann Maddox and Preston Maddox.

We really welcome them to our lodge and come when you can, especially to our next meeting and also our election of officers on Sunday, December 3rd at 2 p.m. All members are asked to bring a covered dish or sweets or vegetables to go with the meat that will be furnished by our lodge for a lunch to be served at 12:30 p.m.

Brother Frank Pajestka, Jr. made a motion, seconded by Glen Latham, that we make a ramp for the handicapped to be able to better enter our hall.

On November 8 would have been 68 years that Mary and I would have been married. As most of you know, she passed away on March 16, 1989. Oh, how I miss you, dear.

Recently, I have been moving around quite a lot. I first was in the Will - 0 - Bell Nursing Home at Bartlett, then went home and stayed two weeks. I couldn't get anyone to stay with me, so the folks got me an apartment at Holland Apartments. I stayed about three weeks, just got a lady to stay with me during the day and no one at night. So I decided to go back to Will - 0 - Bell Nursing Home at Bartlett. Some days I feel fairly well and some days not so good. I can't walk around too well because I have bad discs in my spine. I have a nice place here at the rest home.

The bumper crops are all gathered, but the farmers are badly in need of rain.

Birthdays in November at the meeting, were Helen Pajestka and Eddie Kunz.

Lodge No. 81 , Needville Sunday, November 12, 1989 was a warm and sunny autumn day for our regular monthly meeting. Twenty nine members and guests were present.

Activities began at 12 noon with dinner. The roast beef, furnished by the lodge, was baked to perfection by Sister Benita Walzel. There was also tasty venison sausage donated by the Walzels. The sisters of our lodge brought a variety of delicious vegetables and salads, as well as lots of mouthwatering baked desserts. The food and fellowship were enjoyed by all; nobody was on a diet that day! Our thanks go to all who prepared and brought the food.

The business meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek.

Benita Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. All officers were present for the roll call.

Minutes of the October meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and were approved. She also read letters of thanks received from the local unit of the American Cancer Society and the Volunteer Services Council of the Richmond State School.

Reading of the secretary's financial report was followed by Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's October financial report; both were accepted as read.

Chairman Gilbert Walzel presented his report covering details of the Special Fund activities for October.

His report was also approved as read.

President Matcek, then, introduced one of our favorite guests -- District V Director Louis Hanus. After reviewing the goals and missions of SPJST, Mr. Hanus informed us that members of the Home Office will more closely monitor the progress and achievement of these goals by holding weekly meetings.

Growth in membership and insurance written in District V was also mentioned. This was of special interest to our group; Adolph Macha of Lodge 81 was the top producer in District V for the month of September.

Congratulations also to Sister Benita Walzel who was selected as "Fraternalist of the Year" from Lodge 81.

We extend a warm welcome to Sister Elsie and Brother Frank Brdecka who are now members of Lodge 81 by way of transfer from Lodge Karel Jonas of East Bernard.

Under new business, it was decided to send Christmas fruit to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville. Christmas cards will also be sent to our elderly and shut - in members.

New indoor - outdoor carpet for the exterior entrance to the lodge hall is to be purchased and installed. Members also approved repairs to the barbecue pit and the installation of a light in that area.

No. 88, Houston News Lodge

I have a few items for our Lodge 88 which I didn't get in last week. I do hope you forgive me because my time ran out, and Rudy, our editor, gave me an ultimatum, "Have your letters in by Tuesday or Wednesday", so I try to abide.

Lydia and Tom Marsh have just gotten back from a week's trip to Little Rock, Arkansas; Tom has some property which has to be looked after.

We all know things don't take care of themselves. Anyway they had a lovely trip, the weather was so beautiful. I'm sure it was nice to visit with the family, also.

Our honorary member of the Birthday Club, Helen Valcik, died November 9, in the S.P.J.S.T. Needville Rest Home. Her husband, Steven Valcik, preceded her in death in 1968, also a son Colonel Stanley Valcik in 1976. She is survived by one son, John H. Valcik and one daughter, Helen V. Schnell, both of Houston, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The funeral was held Saturday, November 11 at 3 p.m. at the Shepherd Drive U.M. Church, where she has been a member for some time. Mrs. Valcik was born in Beasley, Texas on May 28, 1900. She was self employed beautician and worked for many years for the U.S. Postal Service. To the family, Lodge 88 extends their deepest sympathy.

Thanksgiving is coming and I do wish all a most joyous day. I'm planning to cook for my regular group which I've done for 35 years.

Remember, it takes less of time to do a thing right than to explain why you did it wrong.

No. 92, Ft. Worth

Dear Members and Friends: What wonderful days we are having in November! It seems like April and spring. It has been 30 degrees only once so far. There have been a few frosts, but not really bad enough to kill flowers. It has turned the lawns brown, the trees are losing their leaves and the ones that have not lost their leaves have pretty color. It's comfortable to go round in short sleeves and no heavy clothes, yet, but the cold weather will come soon. The rain is what we really need, but I'm sure the Lord knows when and where it is needed. All we can do is talk about the weather, but it will do what it wants to do.

Now, when we go to the department stores everything is starting to look like Christmas. Here we still have Thanksgiving first, but I guess the stores are afraid that someone will get ahead of them, so right after October 31st here come the decorations, which makes it long for children to wait for Santa Claus. They seem to think he should come in a few days. I suppose the ladies are having a time trying to select things for their loved ones. It seems that with things the way they are, all of us will be more conservative.

I was also thinking the way the Japanese are buying all the large buildings here in the United States that soon we may need to start using Yens (Japanese money). It sure is something that Japan can buy real estate like they are doing in New York; Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California.

But, I suppose with Americans buying cars and other items from them that is where the money is. I suppose, like they say, money is the evil of all things.

It is nice to read in the Vestnik that Supreme Lodge with other local lodges have given money to the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas. Brother Sefcik, our editor, asked why other Czech organizations haven't given to these projects. I will say that Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Chapter No. 9, Fort Worth, has now made checks in the amount of $200 to the Czech Chair and also $200 to Battleship Texas; these checks will be sent to SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple, Texas, and

a check to the Sokol for $200 in Fort Worth for the Slet which will be held in France next year.

Slavonic Mutual Fire Association has many SPJST members, so in all Czech organizations, we are all brothers and sisters. We all need to help each other; that is what fraternalism is all about.

This year is about gone so it's time for election of officers at the lodges.

Here in the Fort Worth Metroplex, four Lodges No. 92, 154, 180 and 183 will be having our Christmas Party together. This year Lodge 183, Arlington, will be the host lodge and I am sure they will really put on something special. Also each lodge gives its part of the cost; that way it's not too hard on each lodge. This Christmas Party is for members of the four lodges, guests and visitors will pay for $5 for their dinner plate; members' meal is free. There will also be installation of officers from each lodge and then there will a dance later.

This is something the members look forward to every year, which will be held Sunday, December 3, 1989 and doors open at 10 a.m. Special guests will be asked to attend.

We had our election of officers on November 12, 1989. The following were elected, namely: Albert Kubala -- president John Paprskar -- vice president Christine Zich -- secretary Rose Jaworski -- treasurer Evelyn Spacek -- financial secretary Gordon Hubenak -- youth leader Cheryl Hubenak -- assistant youth leader Trustees are Albert Kubala, John Paprskar, Rose Jaworski, Ray Hubenak and Martha Durham.

Appointed Committees -- Martha Durham, sunshine chairperson, sends out birthday and get well cards to members over 65 years of age.

Carl W. Zich, again, was asked to write to the Vestnik as a reporter and other things that need to be announced; Al Kercho, Helen Kubala and Mary Ann Krivanek are on the Rules and Regulations Committee.

Helen Kubala will serve as fraternal activities coordinator. The "Fraternalist of the Year" for 1989 is Martha Durham. The committee selected to find the right one for this honor were Evelyn Spacek, Christine Zich and Al Kercho. Martha was surprised by this honor just as the ones selected before her have been in the past years. The first year was Carl W. Zich and second year -- John Paprskar and now, third year -- Martha Durham. We wish you the best for

Many birthday cards were sent to members 65 years of age so, again, we wish all of you many more happy birthdays and good health.

There were several on the sick list, namely, Flora Koci, Millie Waters, Mary Pulliam (my sister), Christine Zich (my wife), and Helen Kubala who had eye surgery November 13, 1989.

We offer our prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery. I just heard that one of our past Lodge No. 92 presidents, Brother Joe Juran, fell and hurt his leg and neck. To our members who haven't been to the meetings lately, we miss you and hope all of you are well.

Clem and Louise Oujesky are enjoying their 57th years of married life. Congratulations and many more years together.

Liz Howard had a 50 - year school reunion on October 28 at Yoe High School in Cameron, Texas. Evelyn Spacek, Victoria Murphy and Juanita Johnny went with Liz and after the school function, all of them attended a dance at Lodge No. 47 in Seaton and a good time was enjoyed.

We didn't get this dance in the calendar but we will have a dance on November 26 from 3 to 7 p.m. with music by the Rejcek Band.

Members of Lodge 92: be sure to remember the Christmas Party on December 17 beginning at 5 p.m.

Santa will be there to give out gifts and goodies, so bring your children and grandchildren. There will be a youth program put on by the youth club, but if your children want to be on the program, they will be welcome to sing or do what they would like to do.

Ladies are asked to bring cookies and the lodge will furnish the punch.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving Day and the day was enjoyed with relatives and friends.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by president Brother Jerry Milan. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the members remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our departed Brother Emil Paul Janecka.

The secretary's and treasurer's reports were approved as read.

Brother Milan received a letter of congratulations and a check for the Lodge 154 Volleyball Team who won second place in the "A" Division that was held at the State Meet in Temple, they also received a nice trophy.

We too extend our congratulations to the team.

Youth Leader Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported on the big success of the Halloween Party and that the youth club gave a donation to Sokol Travel Fund.

Winners in infant's group were: 1st place -- Ashley Marshall, 2nd -- Katie Payton, 3rd -- Bryan Schwengler Ages 5 to 10 years were: 1st place -Brandi Mason, 2nd -- Krysten King, 3rd -- Bryan (didn't get his last name), and 4th -- Michelle Rivera

The spook house was enjoyed by all.

Sister Cleveland reported District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr had invited the youth club to Lodge 84 on December 2nd and, at 4 p.m., they will go to Holiday - in - the - Park and will see Brother B.J. Cleveland in his show, "Twelve Days of Christmas." She also announced our Lodge 154 and Sokol Christmas Party will be Thursday, December 14 at 7 p.m. with Santa Claus. Sisters are asked to bring some goodies for the social that will follow.

Sister Pavey reported on cards that were sent; forgot to mention an expression of thanks was read from Elsie Anders and Sister Mary Pavey, and a card was read from Sisters Maria Prill and Eva Dockery from Germany.

Brother Milan urged all members to attend the Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party on December 3rd hosted by Lodge No. 183. Watch for details.

Sisters Jeanie and Sheri Mason and Lisa Hopkins just returned from a wonderful 10 days in Los Angeles.

They went to Disneyland and all places of interest. The highlight of their trip was being with Sister Evelyn (Pavelka) Riha who treated them royally. They are still oohing and aahing about being with the soap opera stars of the Young and the Restless and the Bold and The Beautiful during their taping. They said the stars were wonderful and took pictures with them; they also were at Pat Sajak's Show. They enjoyed being with Brother Pavelka formerly of Ennis, Texas, who is 96 years old and making his home with Evelyn. Sister Libby and BrUce Kutchner also entertained them. Libby and Evelyn are sisters, both from Ennis.

Brother Frankie Milan just returned from a week in Denver, Colorado attending the ASA Softball National Convention. While there, he got in a 2 Men Scramble Golf Tournament and won a $500 set of golf clubs and a gift certificate.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Mark and Annie Mamula on the arrival of twin daughters (the 12th) in New Haven, Connecticut. The proud grandparents are Brother Emil and Sister Frances Mamula and Dr. and Mrs. Nyberg of South Bend, Indiana.

Sister Agnes Merlick is enjoying a nice visit with her daughter, Betty Brown of Miami, Florida. They plan on going to Austin to visit Betty's daughter and family, then take a trip to San Antonio .

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Katherine Garrison of Creve Couer, Illinois who was all ready to come to Fort Worth to visit her mother Sister Mary Hale when she had a fall and sprained her ankle on one foot and

broke a toe on the other foot; so her visit will be detained a while. Get well soon! Get well wishes are extended to Brother Joe Juran of Lodge No. 92, who also had a fall.

I just heard Sister Millie Waters of Lodge No. 92 is back in the hospital.

We wish her a speedy recovery and will remember her in our prayers.

"Happy Birthday" went to Brother Joe Milan for his 71st. Sister Anna Johnson had a beautiful cake for him.

Hope you have many more, Brother Joe and Sister Carrie will be leaving Friday (17th) for San Judn, Puerto Rico for a couple of days and then board the Song of Norway for a cruise to Martinique, Barbados, St. Croix, Maarpen and St. Thomas and will return November 26th.

Sister Marilyn left for Moscow, Russia and here they will sing the "Eyes of Texas are Upon You" at the Moscow Square. She will visit Finland and Sweden; on her return, she will spend Thanksgiving in Los Angeles.

Sister Jeanie Mason was our door prize winner.

Lodge

Lodge 179 met for our regular meeting on November 9, 1989 at 7:30 p.m. in the Warrenton Guest Room.

The meeting was called to order by president Brother Harold Bergmann.

Secretary Ricky Weyand was unable to attend. Financial Secretary Arnold Peters gave his report, followed by the treasurer's report. All reports were approved as read.

For new business the Christmas Party was discussed and plans were made for December 14, 1989 at 7 p.m.

Food Committee advised for the meal that we will have baked ham, with members bringing side dishes. Lee Leonhardt advised he would donate the Christmas tree.

In new business also it was decided to have our meal first followed by the meeting.

A motion was made to exchange gifts for Christmas Party, with men bringing a man's gift and ladies bringing a lady's gift.

The meeting was adjourned followed by a turkey dinner provided

by Doris Eckermann.

Our next meeting will be December 14, 1989, with a meal beginning at 7 p .m .

I have gotten "too many irons in the fire" to do the job. I feel it should be done and also feel that it is a good policy to elect new officers ever so often to get new ideas in the lodge, also help the lodge grow; the more people who know the business of running the lodge, the better the members work together.

Gracie and I took a few days of vacation during the first of November and traveled to Lee County around Giddings, Paige, Serbin, and Bastrop doing some research on my family, met some 4th and 5th cousins who I had never met before, talked to a lot of nice people, also have been invited to attend a meeting of the Sons of Hermann Lodge in Paige, Texas sometimes in the future they will be celebrating their 100th year anniversary in 1990. We are planning to attend if possible.

While camping out in Bastrop State Park, we met Willie Nelson and had our picture taken with him, Willie and Kris Kristofferson were making a movie in the park. Gracie and I watched for about 3 hours while they got ready and shot part of the movie.

It was very interesting to see how work goes into making a movie and they told

Gracie and I are going to attend a Thanksgiving dinner given at Bell Helicopter retirees; I hope to meet a lot of my friends who I worked with at the plant. This is the first retirees' dinner that Gracie has been able to attend since I retired.

We plan to go deer hunting this week and then go back to Giddings and Serbin to meet Dr. George Nielsen who wrote a book on "The Wends of Texas, Austrailia and Canada." In it he had my grandfather's and grandmother's names listed as being "Wendish." I hope to be able to talk with him and see if I can find out more on these people.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Choral Club was asked to perform at the Southland Villa Nursing Home on Tuesday, November 14th at 7 p.m. Only six members came to gladden the hearts of lives of the residents. Those present were Martha Klusacek, Agnes Schiller, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Dorothy Pechal and Ralph Milek, accordianist.

President and Song Leader Helen Janacek was not present, so I introduced the entertainers and the numbers. It was so good to see our Lodge 47 member Sister Vlasta Motl and visit with her and the other residents who came to listen.

Ralph played some extra numbers and answered requests. This was the last performance for this year because the holidays will have everyone busy with preparations and entertaining.

To those who were not feeling well, hope you are better by this time.

Most of what I really need to know about how to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten.

Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain but there in the sandbox at nursery school.

These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people.

Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say your're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together.

Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup -- they all die. So do we.

And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation.

Ecology and politics and sane living.

Think of what a better world it would be if we all -- the whole world -had cookies and milk about 3 o'clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own messes. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

President Kathy called the roll and we did have a fine attendance. It seemed everybody felt quite "chipper" and "brisk".

Our dear Sister Frances Olexa was there and she announced that Frances Dvorak, her sister - in - law, was in Houston at her home for a few days.

I'm sure Mrs. Olexa is really enjoying her visit. All of us would have liked to seen her but am sure she's quite busy getting things ready to make her home with her children.

Pearl Hanka read the minutes of the previous meeting for Secretary Rosalee Kostom who was unable to be there.

The minutes were approved as read.

We then discussed our dinner for the second Wednesday, December 13th. We have a group of ladies and men who will cook the Christmas Party dinner for December 6th, which is hard work. (You don't want to work a good horse to death.) This December 6th turkey dinner is free for the

Now, I'm getting back to the December 13th luncheon. Our faithful Lillian Finn always has super ideas about what to do when we get between a rock and a hard place. She immediately made a motion, seconded

by Delores Condon, that we have a covered dish. The following ladies volunteered pastry for both December meeting days -- December 6th and 13th. They are Lillian Finn, Ardith McClellan, Ann Baxter, Helen Hegwood, Pearl Hanka, Rita Alexander, Anna Hoffman and Delores Condon and Lillie Spies will bring a cake for the 13th only. I'm sure we could use a few more because everyone asks for a big piece of cake, so don't complain, because we may have to cut the pieces according to the pastry we have.

Financial Secretary Lillie Spies gave a very accurate financial report as of November 1, 1989. Lillie also thanked all the ladies who helped her in the pastry booth. They were Gladys Pulley, Rita Alexander, Juanita Simons, Margaret Spahr, Tootsie Lacina and Elizabeth Blahuta. Lillie also announced that Josephine Pumilia donated $10 and Tilly Bily donated $20. No one knows how we appreciate these nice gifts. There are many of our club members who give; for instance, Mrs. Ima Lero has made so many neck pillows. She gave me one and I just love it; always wishing I'd be lucky enough to win one off the gift table.

Our Sunshine Lady Mary Kosut was asked to write an invitation to the Board chairman to announce to the Board members that they are invited to the Christmas turkey dinner on December 6th, also an invitation to Lodge 88 President Jerry Ermis to invite his officers.

Ardith McClellan asked for volunteers to run our games. The first session will be called by Bessie Dewer and the second session by Bessie Lero.

(Just a personal comment): These two Bessies are a blessing in disguise many times. When we get in a pinch for extra cooks -- who volunteers?

We are so sorry to always have to report sick members, but these things can't be avoided. We really missed Evelyn Mikolas because her 100 - year - old mother, Mrs. Baethe, had to be taken to the doctor and Evelyn lives with her. Mrs. Emma Jarisch was, in a car accident, but was lucky to come out alive. Her car can be repaired or replaced. Martha Walla had eye surgery and also Rosalee Kostom.

They are both doing fine. Agnes Pederson has been very ill with a stroke. Let's remember our dear sisters in our prayers.

Our cooks for November did a fine job -- they were Chairman Bessie Lero, Lowrena Lindemann, Josephine Bishop and Agnes Moers.

Our cooks for Christmas turkey dinner on December 6th are Kathy and Mike Trefell, Gladys and Dub Pulley, Margaret Spahr, Martha Baxter, Ardith McClellan and Alma McNaspy.

This group can cook the best turkey and dressing. You will agree with me.

Welcomes Miroslav Houstecky, Ambassador Of The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic

Ambassador to the United States Houstecky was recently, given the key to the City of Houston by Mayor Whitmire's representative, Mrs. Carol Neuberger, at the opening of CZECH Modernism 1900 - 1945 at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts October 6th.

Below is the Ambassador's opening remarks in both the English and Czech languages.

CZECH-TEXAN DAY WHEREAS, Americans of Czech descent constitute one of the five largest ethnic groups in Texas, constituting five percent of the state's population; and WHEREAS, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston has recognized the outstanding cultural contributions the Czechs have made, both in this country as'well as in Europe, by organizing the landmark art exhibition, "Czech Modernism 1900-1945"; and

Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great honor for me to be with you at the opening of the exhibition Czech Modernism 1900 - 1945 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

I would like to thank Mayor Whitmire and her representative Mrs. Carol Neuberger for giving me the key from the City of Houston. I accept this key as a token of good friendly relations which already exist between people of Czechoslovakia and Texas.

As Czechoslovak Ambassador to the Unites States, I proudly represent the nation with proud history, with great achievements since World War Two, and with still more promising future.

In the last century many sons and daughters of Czech and Slovak nations came to Texas and helped to build this beautiful and flourishing state. Czech Texans have worked on farms and ranches, oil fields, as well as in the cities. Czech doctor Henry Maresh, son of immigrant parents who lived in Houston, had written about Czech Texans: "They came in order to live their lives as they wished, free from oppression: political, religious, and class." They still keep their customs, and by their hard work help create prosperity for themselves and for the "Lone Star State" as well.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that cooperation and exchanges in culture will further develop mutually beneficial and friendly relations between our two states.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston made a great contribution to better cultural relations between our countries by bringing this important exhibition to the United States. This exhibition is the first of its kind in America, tracing the evolution of Czechoslovak art during the first - half of 20th century. Over 300 works represent a cross - section of visual arts - films, photography, paintings, graphics and sculpture - created in Czechoslovakia during the period of great artistic invention. After this exhibition the names of Czech artists Franti gek Kupka, Bohumil Kubigta, Emil Filla, Otto Gutfreund, Zdenek Pe g anek, photographer Frantigek Drtikol, Josef Sudek, Jaromir Funke and filmmakers and theater directors Alexander Hackenschmied, Gustav

The Czech Modernism is a mixed media exhibition that is the first of its kind in America - tracing the evolution of Czechoslovakian art during the first half of the twentieth century.

The more than 300 works include a cross - section of the visual arts -- film, photography, painting, graphics, and sculpture -- created in Czechoslovakia from 1900 - 1945.

The works in this exhibition have been drawn from international collections with loans from the National Gallery of Prague, the Moravian Gallery of Brno, the Czechoslovak Film Archive, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and numerous regional Czech museums and private collections.

The main focus consisted of photography and graphics later expanded into film and painting and sculpture.

Proclamation from Kathryn J. Whitmire, Mayor of the City of Houston, proclaiming October 7, 1989 as Czech - Texan Day (proclamation shown in this issue of the Vestnik) was presented to Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, who represented the Supreme Lodge.

Other known attendees were Elsie Gilfond, Tim and Rosalee Kostom and Czech instructors William Souchek, Charles Heyda, John J. Karas and Bernard Pivonka.

This most interesting and unique works of art can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, located at 1001 Bissonnet at Main Street through January 7, 1990.

Admission price is $2 for adults; students and senior citizens, $1; young people under 19 free. Admission is free on Thursdays and parking is free directly across from the museum's main entrance on Bissonnet Street.

I See It

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina Unexpected things are happening all over the world these days, particularly in eastern Europe. Through the miracle of modern technology, we can be there in spirit when or shortly after they happen.

On November 9, 1989, East German citizens were given the freedom to cross the Berlin wall and visit their friends and relatives or get asylum in West Germany. The Brandenberg gate was the scene of thousands of people rejoicing. People were celebrating, drinking champagne and waving flags.

I got a lump in my throat when I noticed that the "STARS AND STRIPES" was there. Our flag was not there for any official purpose, it was being waved by Germans, NOT Americans. WHY? Because it has become an international symbol of unity and freedom. To us our flag has always been the majestic symbol of freedom under constitutional government. So long as it flies, government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not parish from the face of the world.

I'm proud to be an AMERICAN. Aren't you?

After a short meeting, the youth provided entertainment. Thank you District VI King Darren Dybala from Lodge 40 and State - District VI Queen Stephanie Roye of Lodge 30 for sharing your winning speeches with us.

The youth program was emceed by Stephanie and Former State Queen Marcy Dorotik. Lodge 30 entertainment included: The Beseda, with dancers Craig Dornak, Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dorotik, Valerie Roye, Michael Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotik, Curtis Dorotik and Sarah Dluhos performing. Jeanine Dorotik, Valerie Roye and Lenice Kaspar performed a clogging routine to "Orange Blossom Special." Bradley Krpec played "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" on the keyboard and Chase Zalman performed his karate routine to "Eye of the Tiger." The previously mentioned youth were joined by Rachel Dluhos, Crystal Roye and Jason Kaspar to sing the "SPJST Fraternal" song.

Lodge 40 youth entertained with a humorous skit entitled "The Family Vacation." Those performing were Kim Kacal, Darren Dybala, Jody Krpec, Jared Dybala, Brian Kutach, Martha Bartos, Sharon and Danny Borak, Lisa and Jennifer Reck.

Thank you, youth clubs, for all your entertainment and also for having your sale booths available. I'm sure everyone enjoyed purchasing tickets and winning their prizes.

During the rest of the afternoon, members played dominoes while others visited and enjoyed playing the Wheel - of - Fortune. The youth of Lodge 40 enjoyed entertaining the adults, as well as the youth, with their scary and noisy spook house.

Videotapes about the Czech heritage and summer camp were also shown. It was an enjoyable afternoon. My thanks also to all who donated many

on various committees, assistant youth leader, youth leader, and now for many years as the Beseda director, not only teaching but also dancing the various Besedas from Czechoslovakia in the State of Texas and also Louisiana.

Rosary was recited Monday, August 21, 1989 at 7 p.m. at Crane - Weiland Funeral Chapel, with Monsignor John T. Gulzynski. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. August 22, 1989 at St. Thomas Aquanis Catholic Church, with Rev. Stephen Bierschenk, celebrant.

Pallbearers were Anthony Parma, Kenny Vrla, David Vrla, Alden Smith, David Janak and Joe Bednar.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles E. Breden, August M. Beran, Robert F. Oates, Albert Mikeska and Clarence Janak.

We, the Resolution Committee, officers and members of SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas, wish, to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister HELEN JO VRLA, who passed away at the Presbyterian Hospital on August 19, 1989 after a short illness. She was born Helen Jo Vrla on January 14, 1926 in Dallas and lived her entire life in the Dallas area.

On September 21, 1946 she married Arnold M. Vr1a. She was a graduate of North Dallas High School and North Texas Agricultural College.

She is survived by her husbanu, Arnold M. Vrla; daughter and son - in - law, Kathy Jo and Ray Pottkotter;

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST No. 130), Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (KJZT No. 108), Catholic Union of Texas (KJT No. 111), Western Fraternal Life Association (WFLA No. 401), Circle of Czech Women, American Sokol Organization, American Czech Culture Society, Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council, Dallas Czech Singers, Parent Teachers Association, Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association, and Girl Scouts of America.

She held various offices and served on different committees in most of the above organizations.

Because of her love of Czech Heritage and Culture and the desire to perpetuate it for the future generations, Helen was very active in the SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130 serving

IN MEMORIAM HELEN VRLA passed away during August. She had been battling cancer for some time. Many of the Louisiana Czech Dancers will remember her as being one of the ladies who cane one weekend in February three years ago and taught them how to dance the Beseda. Helen was also instrumental in the Louisiana Czech Dancers getting the music for the Moravian Beseda at the request of Mrs. Mildred Sasser. We owe Mrs. Vrla a debt of gratitude. In the card sent to Arnold, her husband, on behalf of the Czech Heritage, told him that every time the dancers perform the Beseda it is a living tribute to the generous help she gave.
