District VII Insurance Classes Held In Corpus Christi And Floresville

SEMINAR HELD -

The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representative Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Corpus Christi and Floresville.

SFR Jerome J. Hiavaty conducted the seminar assisted by District VII Director Thelma Hrncir. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote advanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they address SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations such as SPJST is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST does require its agents to take 6 hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

COMMENTS

How mistakes happen in life and, especially in the printing business, is a constant problem and headache and, no matter how hard you try, they will happen.

The question has been asked: 'Are they done on purpose, or are they the result of carelessness, laziness, etc?"

Very frankly, the answer is -NEITHER; it is overlooked in proof reading, nearly all of the time, and your editor regrets them in all cases..

The headings are set on a separate machine at the last minute and a mistake is easy to make as was the case in Brother Karas' article about the "Late Summer Wedding, etc." in the October 25th issue and it came out "Lake."

In the same article, the Leeward and Windward Islands were not capitalized as he had correctly written them.

There is just so much this editor can notice, however, as President Truman used the term: "The buck stops here."

Needless to say, mistakes are always regretted by yours truly.

However, some could be avoided by slowing down the nowaday's fast speed we live in and paying more attention to what we do. We continue to strive to improve in all aspects. ***

We are finally getting somewhat caught up with our backlog of photos and material and we thank our contributors for their patience in all cases. Some articles cannot be repeated as many times as requested; sixteen (16) pages can take only a certain amount of material! ***

The Internal Revenue Service has long had the right to seize your bank deposits to collect back taxes, but as of July you at least were supposed to get a 21 - day warning rather than the former 10. The new rules have been slow to reach all banks, however, so many accounts have been handed over to the IRS, while the 21 - day clock was still ticking. Since the IRS can take weeks to send your money back to the bank if the matter is resolved in your favor, quick action is your best recourse. Both the IRS and your bank must notify you that your account is being frozen and will be released in 21 days. People who want to challenge the claim or arrange to pay their full debt over time should contact the IRS immediately. You also should call the branch manager at your bank to ensure that your account is not released before the 21 - day holding period has elapsed.

Should a bank release your funds prematurely, the Consumer Bankers Association advises that you demand all lost interest and related costs.

However, a bank's liability in such cases has not been established. If the IRS has seized your account in error, you must file a claim with the IRS district or service - center director, and you will be reimbursed for any bounced - check or closed - account fees. A copy of IRS Publication 586A, which explains your rights during the collection process, can be obtained by calling 1 - 800 - 424 - 3676. ***

That "hung over" feeling that sets in after surgery may soon be a relic.

Diprivan, a general anesthetic now being introduced in American hospitals, cuts down on the grogginess, nausea and vomiting that many people experience after "going under."

Diprivan, made by Stuart Pharmaceuticals and used in Europe for two years, is completely gone from the body within 3 hours. Pentothal, the most widely used general anesthetic, takes nearly four times as long to escape.

Diprivan is safe for most people who can tolerate general anesthesia, and it is especially attractive for the 40 percent of surgical patients who are released from the hospital hours after an operation. Diprivan does have one major side effect: It stings when administered intravenously. But lidocaine, a local anesthetic, can easily be added to take out the sting. ***

Revelers looking for alcohol - free ways to ring in the New Year, 29 cities in 17 states now host First Night celebrations with free music, dancing and theater performances. Alcoholic drinks are prohibited at the shows and on the streets. For information on First Night locations and how your city can host its own celebration, call First Night in Boston at 1 - 617 - 542 - 1399. ***

Small cities and towns left out of the loop last year when the Social Security Administration introduced a toll - free number, (800) 2345 - SSA, were added last month. Operators take general questions weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in every time zone and can also set up appointments for callers at 1,300 local SSA offices. ***

If you must smoke, you might do well to stoke up on spinach.

According to a recent study by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, vitamin A, found in green vegetables or in carrots, milk and liver, helps cells in the lungs and bronchial tubes resist inflammation and scarring caused by smoking. Such damage can lead to infection, narrowing of air passages, overproduction of mucus, and eventually to bronchitis and emphysema. The study found that smokers with diets low in vitamin A were twice as likely to develop scarring as those who got the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 5,000 units . Liver is tops in vitamin A, with five times the RDA in a single ounce. But it's high in cholesterol. For the recommended dose of vitamin A from low - cholesterol foods, you can consume a cup of spinach or sweet potatoes, two carrots or 6 to 7 cups of enriched skim milk. A researcher says there is no evidence that vitamin A can reverse lung damage from smoking or that taking more than the recommended dose will give extra benefit. ***

Recently, eleven major health groups, including the American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association, for the first time reached a consensus on when women should have breast X - rays. Their advice: Women age 40 to 49 should get a mammogram every one to two years, and once a year from age 50. The National Cancer Institute (800) 422 6237 can direct you to mammography centers. ***

Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge No. 13 held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m.

Susan Spacek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brother Rick Ford called the meeting to order.

Sister Dorothy Rackel called the roll of officers and then read the secretary's minutes. Sister Debbie Kostelka read the treasurer's report; both were approved as read.

The SPJST would like to thank New Tabor for holding the District I fall meeting.

The next meeting will be held November 19 at 1 p.m. to elect new officers.

No. 40, El Campo-Hillje To Hold Christmas Social Lodge

The El Campo - Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 will hold the election of officers and installation of officers on December 3, 1989.

Members are invited to attend the social beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 3, 1989 at SPJST Lodge Hall in Hillje.

SPJST Lodge No. 49 - Pokrok Rowena held its last quarterly meeting Wednesday, November 1, 1989 in the lodge hall.

President Elizabeth Walther brought the meeting to order at approximately 7:15 . p.m., and the order of business was accomplished in due time.

The president, secretary and reporter were present; the vice president and financial secretary were absent due to a death in their family.

The following officers were re elected, namely: President -- Elizabeth Walther, Vice President -- James Teplicek, Secretary Pauline Shiller; newly - elected Financial Secretary -Eddie Mae Huebner. James Teplicek activities fraternal elected was coordinator.

For the Hall Committee, Bernie Marecek and James Teplicek were re appointed.

For the Kitchen Committee, Lula Marecek and Elizabeth Urbanek were re - appointed by the president.

All four committee members have done an outstanding and commendable job of their duties and service to the lodge.

Pauline Shiller was elected as "Fraternalist of the Year."

Lodge 49 Christmas dinner and game social will be held Friday, December 15 at 6 p.m. in the lodge hall.

Money from the Birthday Fund will be used to furnish the meat dish for the occasion.

Members and guests are asked to bring vegetable side dishes, salads, and desserts.

Everyone is also asked to bring two cans of food for the Food Pantry, which will be used to make Christmas baskets for the needy ones: Our members voted to remember residents of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville, as well as the two rest homes in Ballinger, with boxes of Kleenex for Christmas.

Contributions to the Birthday Fund were made by Pat Tomlinson, and B.J. and Joyce Mikeska.

The highlight of the meeting was the presence of the four members for the presentation of their 50 - year membership pins. The recipients were Elizabeth Dorotik of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Gilbert Loika of San Angelo, Texas; Mary Marecek of Rowena, Texas and Bernie Marecek of Rowena, Texas.

Out - of - town guests were Ann Marie Moore of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mrs. Gilbert Loika, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew W. Block, all of San Angelo, Texas; Mrs. Wally Dorotik and Stacy Dorotik of Eola, Texas.

District IV Director Stanley Broz was also present.

The first door prize was won by Stanley Broz and the second one by Carmen Block; both donated the money to the Birthday Fund.

The first verse of 'America" was sung for the closing exercise.

A delicious roast beef dinner with various side dishes, salads and desserts were served to thirty - two members and guests who lingered to renew friendships in a true fraternal spirit.

Rowena BBQ Benefit And Auction A fund - raiser to benefit three families will be held in St. Joseph's Parish in Rowena, Texas on Sunday, November 19, 1989.

The money will be used to help defray medical expenses.

One of the recipients of this benefit will be Susan Urbanek Bohnenberger.

Until her illness, she was District IV youth counselor who had served in this position for the past three years.

No. 79, Corpus Christi Lodge

After the meeting, there will be a "svacina" for which each family is asked to bring something to share, such as sandwiches and sweets to eat.

No. 88, Houston News Lodge

On October 1, 1989 the Lodge 88 Choral Group chartered a bus to go to Belton, Texas to the Czech Fraternal Fest. There were at least 40 members of our Society on the bus, and they had a good time. I do hope it was appreciated because that's quite a trip in one day.

District V Director Louis Hanus and wife, Oleta, Tim and Rosalee Kostom attended the 89th Annual Texas Fraternal Congress Convention in DeSoto, Texas on October 20, 1989.

This is a combination of all fraternal organizations in Texas. It was held at the Holiday Inn. The first evening on October 20, was a cocktail party and e banquet, with the Keynote Speaker

John Campbell, who is a retired principal from N. Mesquite High School. The next day, October 21, was the Youth Spectacular, which is most wonderful. I went to many of these while Ernie was living and I'll remember these programs as long as I live -- very impressive. On Sunday, October 22 the Ecumenical and Memorial Services for all the delegates were held, with President Jim Webb in charge.

On October 29, 1989 was Lodge 88 Czech Day, and it turned out to be most successful. The Czech dinner was delicious and a large crowd from near and far attended. Of course, later in the evening, we had a 4 or 5 - inch rain, which we certainly needed. (We then did a Rain Dance.)

Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra played during the noon hour and Tim Kostom's Choral Group joined the orchestra later. It was well accepted by all. The program started at 2 p.m. with the presentation of colors by our youth, Crystal Wallace, Darlene and Marlene Migl. The "Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde Domov Muj," were sung by Helen Hegwood, accompanied by Naomi Spencer.

President Jerry Ermis gave the welcome address, followed by the presentation of the Mayor's Proclamation by Maggie Battalino, the Mayor's Representative.

The Parosok Dance Group (a Hungarian Dance) directed by Joe Gooden, which was very good, was next. One of our previous Choral Group ladies, Erna O'Connor's son and daughter - in - law were in the group; also another son did the video.

Erna is a very talented seamstress and she told me she's kept busy making and designing costumes for this group.

Mr. Bill Malina gave the Czech history and did a magnificant job.

Many of the guests had heard this history before, but it's always different when someone else gives it. Bill, it was well presented.

The Rhythm Cloggers, directed by Moni Trappe, were great. That's a dance that puts "zip" in your legs.

At 5 p.m., the people in costume assembled in the lobby and a Parade of Czech Costumes started with District V Queen Crystal Wallace and District V King Keith Kieschnick leading the march. The dance followed, with the dance floor filled with dancers at all times.

The Men's Club drawing was a big success. Those who won the prizes are: 1st prize was won by Jerry Ermis -$100 2nd prize won by Albina Taranowsky $75 3rd prize won by Adolph Hoepfl -$50 4th prize won by Karen Kenjura -$25 All the miscellaneous gifts were: 1. Picadilly at Northline donated 3 "dinner for two," and they were won

by L. Migl, Louis Hanus and Dorothy Bohac.

2. Adolph Hoepfl gave a 12 - pack of oil and oil filter won by Willie Mae Ermis.

3. Joe Miksch donated a case of Miller - Lite which was won by Vera McKaskle.

4. Roy - Bel Distributing Company donated garbage liners, won by Bonnie Parrott.

5. Roy - Bel Distributing Company also donated a case of paper towels, won by Ray Hagan.

6. Robert Miksch owns a Chevron Station and he donated 2 free lube and oil changes, won by Harley Cox and Irene Klare.

7. Jake's Egg Incorporated donated 52 dozen eggs, a supply for 1 year at 1 dozen a week, won by Tim Kostom.

Jake's Egg Incorporated also donated skinless and boneless chicken breasts, which were won by Ellen Miculka.

Tom Marsh, who was in charge of the drawing tickets, told me they sold every ticket they had printed. I must say those men really had the cooperation from everyone, and that's what it takes: "All pulling in the same direction."

Guess what! Albert Zajicek and Evelyn Zahn got married October 28 at 5 p.m. in the Houston Brethren Church. I think it was a surprise to most everybody. Congratulations and Lodge 88 members wish you both a happy married life.

We have quite a number of ill members, namely, Mrs. George (Lucille) Hilger, who is in the Northwest Memorial Hospital. Her husband is with her day and night. The Hilgers have been members of our great Society for many years and so are the children and grandchildren. They need our prayers.

We were certainly saddened this morning when the news arrived in Houston that Leslie Blume from La Grange had died. He was the director of the Blume's Orchestra, which was very famous during my younger days, and still are "tops" in my books.

Arnold Spencer, Naomi's husband, has been very sick, but we all hope he'll recover soon. Naomi is a super wife and is taking good care of him.

He is at home now -- that's usually the medicine that does the most good.

Ronnie Durossette, who was an SPJST member, died October 25th.

He's survived by Nicole and Melissa Durossette from Houston and Ward Durossette from Haskell, Oklahoma.

The girls Nicole and Melissa are John A. Hilsher's grandchildren. His funeral was in Haskell, Oklahoma.

Della Kadlecek is back on her feet -she's on a walker, but Della, I know you'll soon throw that away. I'm seriously expecting you back in the Birthday Club soon.

Jerry Ermis' sister, Sylvia Niesner, died unexpectedly Monday , October 30, 1989 and was buried in La Grange.

You have our sympathy, Jerry and family.

Gus and Ann Urbanovsky had as their house guests for 4 days, Ann's brother, Dalph Kovar and wife, Doris, from Lake Worth, Florida., During that time all their family, children and granddaughter got together 3 dl fferent times for dinner, also an aunt and uncle joined in. While visiting here, they experienced a threat of a hurricane, although I'm sure they had a lovely time regardless.

The Blue Room Christmas Party and Dance is December 17 from 4 to 9 p.m. The reservations are all gone, however, there is a waiting list. If you don't pay your tickets by December 18, 1989, the table will be available for someone on the waiting list. The members of Lodge No. 133 met on October 15, 1989 at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas.

Attendance was light because many members were participating in the Heritage Day in Corpus Christi with the Czech Choral Group.

A report on members who were ill was made. Sister Henrietta Kalmus is still being cared for in a private nursing home. Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik was back in the Humana Nursing Home after a stay in the Nix Hospital. Sister Mary Blanar and Sister Marcella Kleprlik were reported recuperating in the nursing homes. It was also reported that one member, Sister Hildegrad Balvin, had died the past month.

It was decided by the members present that the meeting to invite prospective members would be postponed until after New Year.

Brother Bill Mares presented information on "Fraternalist of the Year." A motion was made by Sister Alma Trilicek and seconded by Sister Viola Fajkus that Sister Viola Kurtz be the "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge 133. The motion passed.

Thanksgiving dinner will be held on the third Sunday, November 19th; a turkey dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Members are asked to provide dessert for the occasion.

Brother Trilicek appointed members for the Nominating Committee. He appointed chairman Sister Viola Kurtz and Sister Viola Fajkus. Vice President Brother Bill Mares appointed Sister Grace Rohan.

Members of Lodge 133 send birthday congratulations to Frankie Campbell [October], Charlie Kutil [ September] and Frank Fajkus [October].

News From Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena Dear Members: The Third Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival held in Pasadena on November 4th and 5th is history now, and we are pleased to announce that this was a bigger and better event. We are looking forward to 1990 for the 4th festival. The officers of Lodge 172 give thanks to our faithful few members who worked hard for two days during the festival; also thanks to the Harris County Czech Heritage Society, and the San Jacinto Czech Club.

Members of Lodge 172, remember the date change of our November meeting; come and attend the meeting on Wednesday, November 29th. This is a covered dish affair , prior to the meeting so bring the food at 6 to 6:30 p.m. arid dinner will begin at 6:30; meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

November is a busy time of the year for our lodge; besides the two - day Czech Festival this past weekend, we will work six rentals and three regular Saturday night dances.

The Lodge's Christmas Party and Dance is December 16 and further information will be covered in future issues of the Vestnik.

We are sorry to hear of the death of one of our members, Pender Stokes of Warren, Texas, also the mother of Clarence Pertl, Mrs. Rose Peril of Caldwell.

We have three of our members in the hospital, namely, Louise Willis in the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Mark Barclay in Hermann Hospital, Houston and Margie Hrabina in Baytown Hospital. We do hope everyone will be well and healthy again and return to our lodge activities soon.

Dear Members and Friends: The quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 189 was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, 1989 by President Ernest Wentrcek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all present, immediately followed by the roll call of officers.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report \L a, r Lad.

Grandparent's Day Honoree, Mrs. Vlasta Wentrcek from Lodge No. 189, Bryan - College Station being presented with a certificate for being "An Outstanding Grandparent," September 10, 1989.

In honor of Grandparent's Day, Mrs. Vlasta Wentrcek was presented with a certificate from the State of Texas and by family and friends in appreciation for being "An Outstanding Grandparent." Mrs. Wentrcek has seven grandchildren and ten great - grandchildren.

Vincent Hegwood, from Lodge 88 Houston, was our special guest. Vince enlightened us with his experience as an SPJST member. We were able to exchange lodge news and gain insight into the activities of a large lodge such as Lodge No. 88. Thank you, Vince, for taking the time to visit with us.

The lodge members discussed a newsletter from President Leshikar about the fraternal activities chairman and committee. It was discussed that if an FAC chairman was not elected then the 1st vice president would automatically assume the position.

The Benevolence Committee reported that cards had been sent to the families of Dorothy Morris and John B. Bravenec.

Unfinished business about having a garage sale was discussed. Members present agreed that it should be dropped for lack of interest.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Wentrcek proposed that we join

in participating in an already established program taking underprivileged children on a hunting and camping overnight trip. Members agreed that this would be a worthwhile project.

Officers were then elected for 1990.

Coast Czech Festival Huge Success Gulf

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina The Third Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival was well attended and everyone who came enjoyed themselves. Saturday and Sunday, November 4th and 5th, were busy days for the members of SPJST Rozkvet Lodge No. 172 of Pasadena, the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, and the San Jacinto College Czech Club. These three organizations co - sponsored the event.

The theme of this festival was music, polka and waltz music. During the meeting of Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society, Joe Janak of Victoria presented a very interesting talk and slide presentation on the early Texas - Czech orchestras and bands. Mr. Janak is compiling a history of the early Czech bands. At this time he has information on just over 70 of the estimated 400 plus orchestras that provided musical and dancing entertainment for the early Czech settlers.

Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen provided the music for Saturday night's dance. The highlight of the evening was the Second Annual Gulf Coast Championship Polka and Waltz Contest. The winners of the contest were Joyce and Willie Bohuslav 1st place; Carmel and Leslie Faldyn -- 2nd place; Elenor and Art Huffman -- 3rd place. The judges were Margie and Julius Matula from Victoria and Jerri Gruber, Ed Krpec, Margaret and John Zalesak of Houston had a very difficult time picking out the winners from the excellent dancers who participated in the contest. Harry Czarnek, through the courtesy of his wife, Betty, donated a beautiful bouquet of roses, which was given to Zofie (Kotykova) Watson. Zofie, born in 1901 in Czechoslovakia, came to Texas at the age of 4. She was the oldest lady in attendance Saturday night.

Prior to the dance, the Frydek Hot Czechs, a group of young high school age musicians amazed the audience by their excellent renditions of old - time Czech polkas and waltzes.

Sunday's activities included a roast beef and sausage dinner, with all of the

traditional trimmings, and performances by the SPJST Lodge No. 88 Choral Group, the Czech Heritage Accordian Band of Galveston County, and the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County. Music for the two sessions of dancing was provided by Charles Mikeska and the "New Sensations" from Temple, and the Henry Repka Band from Houston.

Helen Hegwood, without accompaniment, sang the Star Spangled Banner and the Czech national anthem, "Kde Domov including the Slovak portion "Nad Tatrou sa Blyska," to officially open the day's activities.

Many people traveled long distances to enjoy the festival. Among the visitors were Svatava (Pirkova) Jacobson, a former instructor of Czech at the University of Texas from Austin, several members of the Louisiana Czech Heritage Society from Koline and Libuse, Louisiana, Gilbert Kalich from Richardson (North of Dallas), June and Carl Fisher from St. Paul, Minnesota (Carl is national president of the Polka Lovers Klub of America), Supreme Lodge Secretary - Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska from Temple, District VI Director Matt Vanek, District VII Director Thelma Hrncir and District VII Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir from Robstown, District V Director Louis Hanus from Houston, and Thelma Bartosh, SPJST Museum curator from Temple; also present were four generations of the Wendt family.

The display room of the Czech Heritage Society was well attended. Of particular interest was the collection of Czech dolls from the SPJST Museum at Temple. The dolls are from the collection of the late Miss Agnes Houdek of Dallas who wrote Czech articles for the SPJST Vestnik for over 26 years. Robert L. Skrabanek was on hand to personally autograph copies of his book "We're Czech" and Clarence Pertl demonstrated his craft manship in making violins.

Plans are already underway for a bigger and better festival in 1990. The Texas Chapter of the P.O.L.K. of America will be joining the group of co - sponsors for next year's event. Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen have already been booked for the Saturday night polka and waltz dance.

A personal note: It was my privilege to serve as Master of Ceremonies for the festival. I must say it was a real Measure to work with all of the fine groups who participated, all of them were extraordinarily helpful and cooperative. I would urge all of you to go see and support the young Czech entertainers, the Frydek Hot Czechs, and Charles Mikeska and the "New Sensations," when they perform in your area. It is groups such as these who will carry on the rich musical heritage that has become a tradition among the people of Czech ancestry.

Every Friday morning, · Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar came to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Melva Hastings, · Freda Klawitter and Lydia Hortman came to roll hair.

Thursday afternoon, October 19, Garland Hurtye and Mary Ann Coffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society came and brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Thursday morning, October- 26, Louis Smith, James Little, Edmund Brandl, Hilda Clark, Vlasta Leus, Angelina Sabrsula, Administrator Harvey Marx, Martha Marx (S.A.O.), Aurrora Longeria (LVN), Yolando Tafolla and Paul Legendre (volunteer) went to the Brazos Bend State Park and had a wiener roast. The residents enjoyed looking at the deer and squirrels. In the evening, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents.

Families and friends are invited to attend.

Herbert Nowotny [resident] and nurses aide A Halloween Party was held Tuesday afternoon, October 31st. A contest of staff and residents dressed in Halloween costumes was judged.

Residents 1st prize - Henry Chaloupka, 2nd prize - Louis Smith, 3rd prize - Paul Shafter, 4th prize Gladys Hix, 5th prize - Annabelle Schoppe, 6th prize - Alma Otto, 7th prize - Lupe Arechiga, 8th prize Hilda Clark. Staff -- 1st prize - Cathy Lukasik, 2nd prize - Janie Martinez, 3rd prize - Yolanda Tafolla, 4th prize Sliva Gritz, 5th prize - Diane Lincoln, 6th prize - Viola Kutej. Volunteers Lydia Hortman and Melva Hastings helped serve cake, cookies, candy, punch and coffee to the residents.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of October.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in this area who give services and communion and to all the volunteers who do services in the home for these residents.

Award Presentation At State Fair American-Czech Day, Dallas Mary Polasek, age 83 from Dallas, is shown holding a trophy which she received for being the oldest lady present and for being designated queen for Czech Day at the recent State Fair event.

Joe Martinek, age 83 from Ennis, is shown holding the trophy which he received for being the oldest gentleman present and for being designated king for the Czech Day.

Mrs. Martinek is shown holding the plaque which she and her husband received for being designated as the longest married couple present at the Czech Day. Mr. and Mrs. Martinek have been married for 61 years and reside near Ennis.

The awards were presented by American - Czech Culture Society Past President Stanley Patak.

Mildred Chervenka is treasurer of the American - Czech Culture Society and served as chairman of the Awards' Selection Committee.

The Society has been staging the American - Czech Day at the State Fair since 1928.

Announcing New Youth Club Members From Lodge 17, New Tabor Heather, April, Brad and Lynden Zgabay are new members of Lodge 17 Youth Club. They all attend Caldwell Schools where Brad is in the 10th, Heather is in the 8th, Lynden is in the 5th, and April is in the 1st grade; they are the children of Karol and Lynden Zgabay.

Chad Zwernemann is 6 years old and is the son of Gary and Becky Zwernemann. Chad has one sister Heather who is a member of the Youth Club. Chad attends First Baptist School where he is in kindergarten.

Chad enjoys riding horses and going to football games. His favorite youth club activity is picking trash. He likes hunting for interesting things like mufflers on the road.

Our welcome to all these youth to SPJST Lodge 17 Youth Club.

Lodge 9 Snook Youth Plan Activities Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was well attended and even had visitors. We had a chili supper after our meeting furnished by the Jakubik families.

30 Taiton Youth Activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, October 8, the SPJST Taiton Lodge 30 Youth Club had their monthly meeting at 2 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

We had six adults, fifteen members, and two guests, Kristy and Wendy McDonald, present at our meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Stephanie Roye. The pledge was led by Craig Dornak and Valerie Roye led the prayer.

Lenice Kaspar read the secretary's minutes, Craig Dorotik gave the treasurer's report, and Craig Dornak gave the dues' report.

Thank you letters from Landis Dornak, Anita Roye, and the VA Stamp and Coin Club were read.

Assistant Youth Leader Karen Kaspar gave a report on Grande Day and the Taiton Fall Festival, which was held September 30th and October 1st.

Many youth club members participated in performing various dances at these two places representing the SPJST. Also at the fall festival, we had two fund - raising booths that were very successful.

Stephanie Roye also reported on her next commitment as the SPJST Queen.

On October 29, Lodge 66 Youth Club had their Halloween Party. We met at 3 p.m. and played many games such as darts and bob for apples.

After bobbing; we grilled hamburgers. I'd like to thank the men who made the hamburgers because they were delicious. After eating, we played "bust the pinata;" then when it got dark, we went on our haunted hayride. The ghost and goblins really scared some of us.

After the hayride, we cleaned up our lodge and went home; hopefully, next year it will be more scarier .

Activities Of Lodge 30 Taiton

Youth

PRESIDENT STEPHANIE ROYE presiding over the October Taiton Youth Club meeting.

She attended the SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest in Belton, Texas also on October 1st.

Upcoming events during October were discussed. The Taiton Youth Club has been invited to perform in Rosenberg at the Czech - Moravian celebration and in Hallettsville at the County Fair, both October 14th.

Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) was October 21 in DeSoto, Texas Stephanie Roye and Lenice Kaspar represented SPJST as state winners.

•The youth club also participated in the District VI fall social October 29 in Hillje. The youth will have a booth, participate in a district youth ornament contest and provide entertainment.

For the month of October, youth members donated to Special Olympics for their charity project.

Youth Leader Mrs. Dorotik then told us all about a candy sales project the SPJST is promoting and the club voted to participate in it as a fund raiser.

Contest winners in the homemade Halloween mask project were (5 - 7): Rachel Dluhos - 1st, Chase Zalman 2nd; Jason Kaspar - 3rd; in (8 - 11): Bradley Krpec - 1st, Sarah Dluhos 2nd, Valerie Roye - 3rd; in (12 - 17): Craig Dorotik - 1st, Marcy Dorotik 2nd, Lenice Kaspar - 3rd.

We wished "Happy Birthday" to my brother, Jason Kaspar, for his October birthdate.

Poems concerning Halloween were read by various members. A Halloween candy game was played; Curtis Dorotik won first and Jason Kaspar won second.

Door prizes were drawn and the meeting was then adjourned. We all then had Beseda practice and enjoyed refreshments afterwards.

Lodge 66 Waco Youth Enjoy Fall Activities On October 29th, we had our Halloween Youth Club Party. We met at 3 p.m. in Linden Hall.

Our first game we played was throwing darts, we had several good throwers; next, we bobbed for apples.

Some of us really got wet biting the apples, me included.

Next, the parents did a super job of grilling hamburgers. After our meal, we had a pinata bust, then, at dusk, we left for our haunted hayride. The gouls and ghost did a good job scaring us.

Thanks to everyone who came out and helped in any way, especially the drivers and all the goblins; without them, things like this aren't possible.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, October 29th, District VI had their Fall Social at Hillje SPJST Hall with El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 hosting the day's activities.

After the adult's meeting and announcements, Lodge 30 Tation Youth and El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40 participated in the program of entertainment.

For Lodge 30 Taiton's program Marcy Dorotik, 1988 State Queen, was our emcee.

Stephanie Roye, the present SPJST State Queen, began our program for Taiton's Youth Club with her commitments she's been to thus far as state queen and .then delivered her speech.

Then, our Junior Beseda Group performed the Ceska Beseda; the group included Craig Dornak, Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dorotik, Valerie Roye, Michael Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotik, Curtis Dorotik and Sara Dluhos.

Bradley Krpec then played a song on his keyboard entitled "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie." Chase Zalman performed his karate routine to "Eye of the Tiger."

Next was Jeanine Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar and Valerie Roye doing their clogging routine to "Orange Blossum Special."

Ending the program for Taiton, the entire youth club present namely: Craig Dornak, Chase Zalman, Bradley Krpec, Racheal Dluhos, Jason Kaspar, Crystal Roye, Sarah Dluhos, Michael Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar, Curtis Dorotik, Valerie Roye, Craig Dorotik, Stephanie Roye and Marcy Dorotik joined in to sing the "SPJST" song.

Our Taiton Club also had a booth which we sold tickets for and then gave away the items later in the afternoon.

I also participated in the District VI Ornament Contest.

Other activities that were fun were the spinning wheel and spook haunted house that Lodge 40 fixed up.

It was all a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the whole day.

30 Taiton Youth Perform At TFC Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, On October 21st, I attended the 1989 Texas Fraternal Congress Convention in DeSoto, Texas. I would like to thank the SPJST Society for giving me the honor of representing the Society at the Fraternal Congress. I performed my "Yankee Doodle Dandy" tap routine at the Youth Spectacular portion of Fraternal Congress that I had won first place in 10 - 12 Individual Talent Division at State YAD. I was very excited when I was invited to perform my dance.

I really enjoyed being a part of the youth spectacular portion of Texas Fraternal Congress and the entire youth spectacular was so very nice.

Stephanie Roye,- from our Taiton Club, who is State SPJST Queen emceed part of the youth spectacular along with the State King.

Other members of our lodge, Crystal Roye, who is State Duchess, along with Marcy Dorotik (1988 SPJST State Queen) also attended the youth spectacular at TFC. Parents attending were Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Roye, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kaspar and my brother, Kyle.

Thank you, again, for the wonderful opportunity of representing SPJST at TFC. We all had so much fun visiting with our friends from other lodges and enjoying fraternalism with everyone.

Expression Of Sympathy The membership of Lodge 135, Ennis, expresses its sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother JERRY LAZNOVSKY, who died October 31, 1989, at his home, at the age of 75.

Brother Laznovsky was born September 4, 1913, in Ennis, the son of Frank and Mary Trojacek Laznovsky.

He was reared in Ennis and attended the Mote School near Bristol. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1932. After graduation, he was employed by Kucera Grocery and Rains Grocery for a number of years.

On November 3, 1940, he was married to Bessie Marie Ellevan.

On March 4, 1942 he entered the U.S. Armed Services. He received his training at Sheppard Field, Texas, Lockheed Aircraft Factory in California and Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He landed in North Africa December, 1942 and was assigned to the Mediterranean Allied Air Force as Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Engineer. In 1943, he landed in Southern Italy advancing up to Naples. He served 3 months on special duty in Yugoslavia due to his bilingual background. He was discharged in November, 1945.

In June, 1948 he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service retiring January 9, 1980 after 35 years of service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as assistant scout leader for about 14 years with Methodist Troop No. 210 and also served as treasurer of the Men's Bible Class.

He was a member of Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky, Ennis, where he served as physical instructor and later as educational director and then as vice president. He was an honorary vice president at the time of his death.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 361, the VFW No. 7106, SPJST Lodge No. 135, and WFLA Lodge No. 402 where he served as president for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Laznovsky of Ennis; one daughter, Amy Laznovsky of Ennis; one son, Gregson Laznovsky of Ennis; four grandchildren, Sabrina, Wendy, Gregson, Jr., and Christy Laznovsky; one great - grandson, Jerry Russell; two brothers, Stanley Laznovsky of Dallas and Milton Laznovsky of Bagneaux, France; two sisters, Libbie Smith of Dallas and Vlasta Laznovsky of Ennis and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frankie Laznovsky in 1986 and Edwin Laznovsky in 1987.

Funeral services were held November 2nd in the Keever Chapel, Ennis, with the Rev. Allen Goss and Brother Stanley Patak of Dallas officiating. Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Johnny Laznovsky, Milton Martinek and Charlie Jurcik, Jr., all of Ennis, Jerry Ellevan of Pasadena, David Smith of Copeland and Ted Smith of Austin.

Honorary pallbearers were Fred Ludwig, Neal Goodwin, J.W. Parker, Irvin Anthony, Eddie Miller, Ed Ellington, Dan Anthony, Tom Valek, Larry Laznovsky, Alphonse Patak, Stanley Patak and Jerry J. Laznovsky.

Sister Spiller was born on June 27, 1922, at Wheelock but resided in Bryan since 1968. She was formerly employed by the food services department of Texas A&M University.

She was a member of the Henry Prairie Baptist Church and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 94 since 1940.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Spiller, in 1988.

Silver Anniversary Celebrants Mr. and Mrs. Bobby L. Wuensche celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 1, 1989 at a dinner and dance held at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall in Taylor. The couple's children are Ginger Seigmund of Haltom City and Denisse, John, Paula and Andy Wuensche of Taylor. The celebrants were married October 3, 1964 in Taylor Brethren Church by the late Rev. Joseph A. Barton. Parents of the couple are the late C. Leonard Wuensche and Freida Wuensche of Thorndale and H.A. and Ruth Susan of Taylor.

Cyril And Methodius By: W.J. "Bill" Malina Religion, in one form or another, played an important role in the development of western and central Europe. Up until the late fourth century, when Christianity became the predominant religion, political aggrandizement was motivated mostly by greed and the need for new sources of food supplies. After that, political and territorial expansion was cloaked by the Christian mandate: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations—." As feudalism began to take shape in western Europe, land barons, princes and rulers of all ranks used the Christian mandate as reason or pretext to step up eastward expansion into central Europe. By the middle of the ninth century central Europe was pretty well settled by Slavic people and the majority of them were united into what was known as the Great Moravian Empire, which included Bohemia, Slovakia and parts of Poland, Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia.

In approximately 863 A.D., Ratislav, prince of the Moravians (or Duke of the Great Moravian Empire), in order to combat the Germanic christianization of the Slavic people of central Europe, sought help from the Byzantine emperor at Constantinople

(now Istanbul), the capitol and power center of the eastern or Greek Empire.

The use of their language was being threatened and the Sla y s were required to listen to church services in Latin, which made no sense to them. Other religious instruction was being conducted in German, which also was not easily understood by the Sla ys. In response to Ratislav's request, two brothers Constantine (better known as Cyril) and Methodius, were appointed and sent as missionaries to the Slavic people in central Europe.

Saints Cyril and Methodius, more than any others, are responsible for the cultural development of the Slavic people. Had Cyril not developed a unique alphabet by which the old Slovanic language could be written, the Slavic people, in all probability, would have been assimilated, with little separate identity, into the Greek speaking people of the Eastern or Byzantine Empire and into the German or Latin speaking people of the western or Holy Roman Empire.

Cyril and Methodius were sons of a Greek man named Leo, who was an officer in the Greek army and a prominent resident of Salonika (Thessalonika). Leo died when Cyril was only 14 years old. By the mid ninth century a large Slavic population had settled around Salonika. Both Cyril and Methodius knew the Slavic language and spoke it fluently.

Methodius was the older of the two and had been some sort of civil official before he entered into monastic life.

Cyril gained distinction as a teacher and philosopher, his teaching kept him in contact with many young foreigners seeking education in the multilingual Greek Empire. For a time Cyril and Methodius were sent on a missionary journey to the Khazars, a Slavic people in Russia. After they returned from that assignment, Methodius was appointed Abbot of the Polychronian monastary in Bithyia (on the Black Sea in Asia Minor), Cyril resumed his studies and teaching.

When Ratislav's request reached the Greek emperor, it was natural that the two brothers be sent to Moravia. It was common knowledge that they both were interested in missionary work among Slavic people. Cyril had a great gift for languages and came to the conclusion that the Slavic language needed an alphabet by which it could be written. The alphabets in existence It that time could not convery all of the unique sounds of the spoken Slavic language. It must be remembered that the language of the Slavic people at that time was not dissected into the various languages and indentifiable dialects known today.

By 863 A.D., Cyril is supposed to have developed a Slavonic alphabet and translated most of the New Testament into it before being sent to Moravia. There is conflicting opinion among historians as to which alphabet Cyril developed. Whether it was by Cyrillic, which bears his name, or the Glagolithic is of little importance, except to detailed study. It is generally agreed that Cyril developed the Glagolithic, however, the important fact is that he is credited with having developed the first alphabet by means of which the Slavic language could be written.

There is also some question as to whether or not both of the brothers were priests when they were sent to Moravia. Methodius, having been the abbot of an important monastary, was at least a "monk in priest's orders," i.e. performing the duties of a priest even though not being ordained as one. Cyril, on the other hand, was probably only a deacon. Their primary task in Moravia was to teach and train young Slavic Christian men to serve the church and prepare them for the priesthood. Their secondary task was to christianize and baptize the unconverted as opportunity arose.

After reaching Moravia, Cyril continued to translate ,scripture and church liturgy into the Slavonic language. It was not long after they arrived in Moravia that the two brothers came into conflict with the German prelates of the Western - Latin wing of the church. By 866 A.D., Cyril and Methodius were considered "personae non gratae" in Moravia. By 867, they left the country, presumbly on their way back to Constantinople.

They stopped and stayed, for a while, at Mosaburg (Blatensk Kostel in Slavonic) in Pannonia, which is now Zalavar on the southern end of Lake Balaton in Hungary. Pannonia, at that time, comprised the western part of Hungary and the northern part of Yugoslavia. They then worked their way to Venice and finally reached Rome before the end of 867 A.D. It is not unlikely that they were summoned to Rome to answer the charges made against them by the German clergy. It is supposed that the brothers took up residence in one of the Greek monastaries that were in Rome at that time.

After Hadrian II (Adrian II) had been elevated to the papacy in 868 A.D., the church deemed it advisable to permit. Cyril and Methodius to continue their work among the Slavic people in Moravia. The church also deemed it advisable to appoint a bishop of the Moravians and Pannonians. Cyril was the obvious choice, but died, at the age of 42, before he could be ordained and consecrated. He died in Rome in February of 869, only 50 days after assuming his monastic vows, during which he took the name of Cyril. He is buried in the Church of St. Clement.

His tomb has been lost or destroyed.

In 1963 a few of Cyril's bones were supposedly discovered while the basilica was being renovated.

Cyril's unexpected death left Methodius as the natural choice for becoming the new bishop to the central European Slays. Methodius was appointed as archbishop and sent to take over the revived archbishopric (see or archdiocese) of Illyricum in Pannonia. Upon his arrival in Moravia in approximately 870 A.D., Methodius was arrested and tried by a Bavarian ecclesiastical court in Regensburg on charges that he had trespassed upon the authority of the see at Salzburg which claimed jurisdiction over Pannonia. He was imprisoned in a monastary in Swabia (southern Bavaria in West Germany), probably Ellwangen. In 873, Methodius was released and fully reinstated to his episcopal post by Pope John VIII, who placed restrictions upon the use of Slavonic in the liturgy. As a missionary archbishop, Methodius had the title of "Archbishop of the Moravians," but did not have a fixed see tied to a capitol city.

The years 874 and 875 A.D. saw a substantial expansion of the Slavic church into Bohemia and southern Poland. In 879, Methodius was once again summoned to Rome to answer charges made by German clergy that he was not following the limits set by Rome concerning the use of Slavonic in the worship services in Moravia.

Bishop Wiching of Nitra (in Slovakia) continued his attacks upon Slavic activities. By 881 A.D., Methodius felt that he could no longer be certain of papal support and turned to the Greek wing of the church for help. Later in the fall of 881, he journeyed to Constantinople where he remained almost a full year. Methodius returned to Moravia in 882 or 883 and devoted his efforts to complete the translation of the Bible into Slavonic. In 884 new difficulties arose between Bishop Wiching's followers and Methodius.

This difficulty was, in all probability, more political than ecclesiastical.

Methodius died on Easter Sunday, April 6, 885 (some historians claim that he died on Tuesday of Holy Week that year) and according to tradition was buried in the Moravian Cathedral.

The location of that Moravian Cathedral has not yet been identified, nor has his grave been found. It is a strong possibility that the Moravian Cathedral was the church at Stare Mesto known as "Na Valach," or that it was Church Number Three at Mikulcice, both of which were very active Christian centers during the latter half of the ninth century.

There can be no doubt that these two Greek men, Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius, left an indeliable mark upon all people of Slavic origin.

Levohradske tradici starobyleho sidla Pfemyslovai a niistu uvedeni kresfanstvi na Ceske tizemi s rozvinutim vzdelanosti prostfednictvim staroslovenskeho literarniho jazyka venoval pozornost fimskY cisaf a 6eskY kral Karel IV. Po matce Eli gce Premyslovne se hlasil ke svemu prapfedku kniteti Bofivoji, vzdal tictu jeho prvni levohradske svatyni sv. Klimenta a nechal ji stavebne upravit a vyzdobit. Znovu tak otivil povedomi o pradavnem vYznamu techto mist.

Od poloviny 19. stoleti se stal Levy Hradec mistem mnohatisicovYch narodnich shromatdeni, pouti a konanYch rfiznYmi spolky, organizovanYch vlastenci a vlasteneckYmi knezi za tieasti vgech vrstev lidu z Cech, Moravy, Slerska, Slovenska a krajantl z raznYch evropskYch zemi i ze zarnofi.

Roku 1937 se ujal chatrajici pamatky vzrustajici kulturni spolek Narodni Matice na Levem Hradci, zamefenY svou Cinnosti k poznavani, objasriovani a dastojnemu zvelebeni dosud pamatkove opomijene narodni parnatky. Jeho tisilim bylo v napjate dobe roku 1939 pokraeovano v systematickem archeologickem vYzkumu.

Na zaver misii byl na Levem Hradci 2. dubna 1939 pied kostelem vztyeen a vysvecen misijni kilt s korpusem Spasitele, kterY je praci mnicha z franti gkanskeho klagtera v Haiku.

Posledni nedeli v fijnu 1939 (den pfedtim, v sobotu 28. f ijna, byl svatek samostatnosti a prohlageni Ceskoslovenske republiky v roce 1918) se konala na Levem Hradci jedna z nejvetgich narodnich manifestaci proti nacismu, v jejimt zaveru byly po stranach misijniho Hite zasazeny lipy Vaclava Bene g e Tfebizskeho.
