The minutes of the fourth quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting are in this issue and you are encouraged to read them carefully; they reveal quite an amount of information if you read them with attention.

You will find some important information in Vice President Gebala's "Old Business" report, Secretary Treasurer Mikeska's report and, especially, the Expense - Profitability Study by Actuary John Agee, which is very revealing.

The third paragraph in a 4 - year period expenses were up 30 percent and the number of insurance certificates was down and many of them were "rollovers," which do not bring in new finances for re investment by the Investment Departmemt.

The fourth paragraph reveals our SPJST's outstanding financial strength, however, long - term efforts and changes must be instituted to reduce expenses and increase the number of insurance certificates issued.

Read Actuary Agee's report carefully including surplus.

SL Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska had formulated a Long - Term Goals and Operations plan which he passed out Tuesday afternoon at the meeting addressing these issues.

Your editor was present at the meeting during Actuary Agee's presence until he left at 12:30 p.m. and for the Tuesday afternoon session.

The actuary stated that paying commission on "rollovers" to "Lone Pay Life" certificates was a losing proposition and when he was asked when paying commissions should be stopped, he replied: "YESTERDAY!" In view of that answer, under ROLLOVER OF CASH VALUE, your editor was surprised to read that two directors voted in opposition to ending internal "rollover" commission effective October 7, 1989.

Why have an actuary come in, examine our operation, give us straight, factual information, etc., pay him for it and then ignore it?

Also you will notice that Actuary Agee recommended at least a 11/2 percent spread between interest earned and interest paid, which does not give Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska much to work with.

Our SPJST Fraternal Society is financially sound; let us keep it that way! *** HELP APPRECIATED is the title of a letter sent to your editor some time ago by Brother Ernest Wentrcek of Lodge No. 189, Bryan; it is in this issue.

We appreciate Brother Wentrcek's patience until we had space to publish it and we hope you will read it and, maybe many of you can be able to help him.

In this instance it is appropriate to remind our members and readers, that matters pertaining to our SPJST Society business have preference in the Vestnik, the cost of which, of course, is paid for by our SPJST. We still have some wedding articles, "Feature" items, etc. which we are holding for when space is available. Please have patience!

About two weeks ago, we had an editorial about the CEFT Czech Chair (endowment) and how mudh our SPJST Society has advanced for that cause to - date (about $60,000).

We asked other Czech - founded organizations to help in this worthy cause and re - emphasize our appeal at this time.

In this issue is a picture and information of a donation to CEFT being made by the ENNIS POLKA FESTIVAL for the Czech Chair which is, naturally, appreciated.

We also have the very welcome and good news, that a foundation is planning to help CEFT with a donation of a sum well into the thousands of dollars. This is welcome news, of course. This writer understands that it is not a Czech founded foundation and is that much more to be appreciated.

Now is the time to ask ourselves the question: "Are we going to ask and let others do our work for us? Now is the time to put in the biggest effort thus far; we can do it; we will do it!

Let us all get out of our chairs and get to work to help preserve the Czech language and heritage, something all of us will be proud of. DO IT NOW! *** DELEGNI ATTENTION Recently, the Supreme Lodge mailed a ballot to every delegate from the SPJST XXV Convention pertaining to "Family Recreational Area," and you are requested to send in your reply to the home office before November 30, 1989 deadline. Send signed ballot only in enclosed envelope! *** One employee benefit many workers have passed up is about to get more attractive. As of January 1, employees who elect to have pretax dollars deducted from their pay and deposited into a "medical spending account" for health - care costs not covered by insurance will have access to the funds even before they have saved them.

Until now, participants could spend only the amount they had accumulated. Once the rules change, companies must advance employees an account up to the sum they intend to deposit over the full year.

Many companies, fearful of huge losses if employees take advances early in the year and then leave for another job without repaying the money, are beginning to limit the amount that can be set aside at $1,500 to $2,000. That cap should not impose a hardship on most people. Most people now set aside only $550 to $600. *** Parents would be well advised to do their holiday toy shopping over the next couple of weeks. Following two slow holiday seasons, when many toys gathered dust while shoppers scooped up Nintendo games, wary store owners are limiting their stocks this year.

Holiday shoppers accustomed to depleting their gift budgets on $100 Nintendo systems and Cabbage Patch dolls are in for a pleasant surprise.

Many of the toys your kids will be begging for this holiday season, if toy marketers know kids, are relatively cheap. The newest Barbie, who comes dressed for winter in "faux fur," costs $30, for example. Playmates' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figurines, the fourth - best - selling toy so far in 1989 behind three $25 - to $40 Nintendo games, cost $4 to $6 each. New battery - powered mini - race cars from Tonka, Hasbro and other manufacturers travel at 15 miles an hour, leaving conventional toy cars in the dust. They could overtake Nintendo in popularity and cost only $6 to $12 apiece. ***

From The SecretaryTreasurer's Office Minutes Of The Fourth Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held October 9-11, 1989 At The Home Office In Temple The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Vanek - VI, Vice Chairman of the Board Thelma Hrncir - VII MINUTES - The minutes of the July 10 - 12, 1989 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered page by page.

There were no corrections, and the minutes were approved as presented on motion by Director Vavra, seconded

by Director Vanek and carried unanimously.

REPORTS - There was a discussion about reports and it was decided that all reports would be made available to the entire Supreme Lodge. Time was allowed to review the Supreme Lodge officers' reports, after which the reports were acknowledged on motion

by Director Broz, seconded by Director Hanus and carried unanimously. The reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 8.

OLD BUSINESS President Leshikar's Old Business Matters: ACTIVITIES AND MEETINGS ATTENDED - President Leshikar discussed and answered questions on his travels during the quarter.

It was agreed that all Supreme Lodge officers would include a report of travels and activities in their quarterly reports.

Report was made on a meeting the Supreme Lodge officers had with the editor and that there was a good exchange of information. The Board encouraged good communication and quarterly or more frequent meetings with the editor to keep him informed.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATIONS - The following allocations were paid: University of Texas (Austin)- $1,000 Temple Junior College - 800 Spring Branch ISD - 600 Alvin Community College - 800 The Victoria College - 800 Alief ISD - 600 CZECH FEST - Report was made on the recently held Czech Fraternal Festival. There was no charge for rental of the facility. Other costs were

$1,507 plus expenditure of $407 for reusable items. There was a question on whether the Fraternal Festival is mandated by the convention. It was concluded that if it is determined that the affair is good for the organization, it should be continued. There was good feedback about the event and many inquiries were received about membership. The sum of $466.45 was raised from kolache and food sales for the scholarship fund.

President Leshikar moved and Vice President Gebala seconded that a fraternal festival be planned for 1990 in conjunction with the Cen - Tex Fair and on the same financial basis. The motion carried with 11 in favor and Director Hanus abstained.

TOURS - Report was given on status of the first tour scheduled for Las Vegas under the new membership tour program.

Inquiries for the trip had been received from non - members and the Board affirmed that membership would be required.

POLITICAL LIAISON - There was discussion about contacts made with public officials. A tracking system is being maintained to keep record of those public officials who have been contacted by representatives of the SPJST. CEMETERIES RESTORATION UPKEEP -- The status of restoration of SPJST cemeteries was reported.

Funds were disbursed to seven cemeteries totaling $1,510.

CHARTER RESTORATION

LODGE The status of

restoration of charter lodge buildings was reported.

After discussion it was agreed to appropriate $3,333 for Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville which represents 1/2 of some $10,000 of renovation costs. The motion by Director Vavra, seconded

by Director Broz and it carried unanimously.

CHARITY PROJECTS - It was reported that the sum of $9,499.30 was raised for the Czech Chair and $5,429.00 was raised for the Battleship of Texas Project, plus $5,000 from the Society, a total of $19,928.30. Seventy - five lodges and three youth clubs participated. Fifty - four individual donations were also received.

SPJST MUSEUM - President Leshikar reported that museum displays were provided for a number of community festivals and the SPJST museum puppet display is featured in the Texas Tourism Guide.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR (FAC) - Report was made on how the State FAC was utilized during the quarter.

LODGE REORGANIZATION Report was heard on the reorganization of SPJST Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville. Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska and Director Vavra reported on the reorganization meeting during which new officers were elected and both were optimistic.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 8, 1989 Vice President Gebala's Old Business Matters: PRODUCTION - Vice President Gebala reported on production during the period from January 1 through September 30 comparing 1988 and 1989. Insurance issued was up $3,703.518 and earned premium was up $259,589.40 There was a discussion of the need for management to have more detailed reports breaking out rollover premium income, first year premium income, first year and renewal premium income by certificate type, etc.

Director Hrncir moved and Vice President Gebala seconded that we develop computer programs to break out premium income by different category and to provide more detailed information about our operations.

Motion carried unanimously.

SEMINARS - Vice President Gebala" stated that the second half of sales' seminars were being conducted and the new modified whole life plan was introduced. The modified whole life plan replaces the old Juvenile Term to age 16 plan.

BONUSES - The 5 percent bonuses for the State Field Manager and the three Field Representatives on their personal sales were approved on motion by Director Vanek, seconded

by Director Vavra and carried unanimously.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska's Old Business Matters: REAL ESTATE OWNED - The Board reviewed a study completed on the sales of foreclosed real estate for 1988 and 1989. Losses on sales as a percentage of loans was 3/10 of 1 percent for 1988 and 2/10 of 1 percent for 1989.

Report was made on one property foreclosed during the quarter and the status of properties owned from previous foreclosure sales.

1. REO NO. 163, SPJST Lodge No. 178, Longview property. Report was made on efforts to sell the property currently listed for $325,000. The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Pokladnik have authority to negotiate sale of the property.

2. REO NO. 170, a residence located at 1700 North Preston in Ennis, Texas.

Report was made on efforts to sell.

The property is listed with Coldwell Banker for $122,500. The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Pokladnik have authority to negotiate sale of the property.

3. REO NO. 172, a residence located on a lot adjoining Lake Corpus Christi in Live Oak County, Texas. The property has book value of $83,840.32 and the Society has a contract for its sale at $55,000. The sale of the property was ratified on motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimously.

4. REO NO. 173, a residence on 9.114 acres of land near Azle in Tarrant County, Texas. The property is listed for sale at $92,500 with Ray McClellan Realty. The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Pokladnik have authority to negotiate sale of the property.

5. REO NO. 174, a residence located on a commercial lot located at 11608 N. Lamar in Austin, Texas. The property was foreclosed this quarter and has a book value of $61,171.28.

Authority to list the property and negotiate sale was granted to the Supreme Lodge officers and Director Willie E. Kohutek on motion by

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES There was discussion about a first draft of Goals and Objectives distributed in behalf of the Supreme Lodge officers to the Board. The input and refinement of the entire Board was requested by the officers and they recommended the draft be used as an outline to begin work on a comprehensive written corporate plan of Goals and Objectives for the organization.

It was reported that the recent expense - profitability study establishes the fact that the SPJST management needs to plan and act in three basic areas: (1) In depth review of all expenses and to cut expenses in those areas that will not adversely affect operations.

(2) Increase sales' production and membership growth with a concentration on increasing new first year premium income.

(3) Establish a system of providing more detailed management information and statistics to give management the information needed to review progress of organization and to make management decisions.

It was agreed that the Board would devote adequate time to the refining of the first draft of goals and objectives and set a timetable to come up with a written formal plan of goals and objectives that will put us on track for good healthy long - term growth.

Financial Secretary Mikulas' Old Business Matters: DIRECT BILL - He reported 42,434 certificates are on direct bill and that Lodge No. 47, Seaton recently voted to go on direct bill.

VESTNIK - The Vestnik subscription list now stands at 8,640.

Weekly postage cost is $914 and weekly printing cost is $1,210.

FIRST CLASS PRESORT - Mass mailings are now presorted at the Home Office to obtain a savings on the postage costs. This savings amounted to near $500.00 for this past month.

EXPENSE - PROFITABILITY STUDY - Review of the expense profitability study was postponed to the following morning at which time Actuary John Agee would be present.

There was a review of a breakdown of expense into a large number of categories comparing 1988 with 1984 together with the percentage of change.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF 1988 BUSINESS -- The independent audit and management letter was reviewed.

After discussion, the 1988 independent audit conducted by Peat Marwick Main and Company was reviewed and accepted by the Supreme Lodge. The motion was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by President Leshikar and it carried unanimously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas asked that consideration be given to three bids received for conducting the audit of 1989 business in 1990. The bids were: 1. Peat Marwick Main and Company - $15,500 plus 15 percent to 20 percent.

2. Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd and Therrell - $14,000.

3. Camero , Chumney - $16,500 plus actuary fees.

After discussion, Director Hrncir moved that the firm of Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd, and Therrell of Waco, Texas be chosen to conduct the audit of 1989 business. The motion was seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:50 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 10, 1989.

Legal Advisor Kacir's Old Business Matters: LITIGATION - TAX SUITS Report was made on litigation and tax suits in connection with ten real estate loans.

Directors' Old Business Matters: DIRECTOR VAVRA - He stated that he was happy to see that Chairman of the Board Pokladnik has recovered so quickly from his surgery..

Director Pokladnik responded by thanking the entire Board for their get well wishes and other acts of concern during his recuperation period.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK Discussed his travels and official activities. He stated that when he delivered the Czech Language Allocation to Temple Junior College, a request was made to authorize use of the funds to purchase a computer and Czech Language software for the TJC Library. The motion to authorize this use of funds was by Director Hrncir, seconded by President Leshikar and it carried unanimously DIRECTOR BROZ - Reported on the District IV district meeting and other official travels and activities.

DIRECTOR HANUS - Reviewed his official travels and activities.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He reported that Lodge No. 23, Moravia was requesting 1/2 of the sum of approximately $800 under the charter lodge renovation project. The motion to authorize the payment was by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded

by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR - Discussed her travels and activities during the quarter.

She indicated there was a lot of interest about the Czech Language tapes in District VII. She suggested that directors be utilized to help in some way at the next Fraternal Festival.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK Reported on functions he attended representing the SPJST and various travels and activities.

EXPENSE - PROFITABILITY STUDY - Actuary John Agee was present to discuss the study requested by the Supreme Lodge at the last quarterly meeting.

The purpose of the study was to determine the profitability of operations as they affect the long term operation of the Society.

The study concluded that expenses were up 30 percent for the period studied since 1984 and the number of insurance certificates was down and many certificates were rolled over into paid - up insurance. On a positive side, the average size of certificates issued was increased from $9,768 to approximately $18,000.

It was determined that the SPJST has outstanding financial strength but for the sake of long - term operation of the organization, efforts need to be made to reduce expenses and to concentrate on ways to increase the number of insurance certificates issued.

Actuary Agee stated that it is necessary for a fraternal benefit society to make a profit so that it can

support its programs for its members.

He suggested that the Board concentrate on additional ways to motivate our sales representatives to increase productivity.

Actuary Agee discussed the problem with rollovers that must be addressed.

A rollover is the surrender of one certificate and moving the cash value to a new certificate. Too many of our certificates are being rolled over to single premium paid - up certificates.

This procedure needs to be addressed by the Board.

Actuary Agee discussed the allocation of assets to interest sensitive products and encouraged the Board to, allow for a sufficient spread between what is earned on investment of the assets and what rate is paid on the interest - sensitive products.

There was a discussion about surplus. Surplus is that amount of funds that exceeds total liabilities. The goal is for surplus to continue to increase as more insurance is written and liabilities increase. There was also discussion about an erroneous impression of some of our members that surplus is cash or money that can be readily be spent.

Editor Rudy Sefcik and Dr. J.J. Skrivanek arrived to visit the meeting.

Dr. Skrivanek is president of the Czech Education Foundation of Texas. A brief recess was taken during which checks were presented to Dr. Skrivanek for the Czech Chair Fund Drive and to Bill Scruggs with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the Battleship of Texas Drive. The updated sum of the Czech Chair donations was $12,124.80 and the Battleship of Texas donation. was $8,054.

Time was allotted to Actuary Agee to answer questions. There was discussion about arriving at a formula on which to base goals and objectives.

A consensus of opinion was reached that to insure a continued and sustained long - term growth and progress of the organization, goals and objectives should be set which should include a well - studied plan of action in all areas of operation. Preparation of the plan and agreement will require the input and support of the entire Board. Meeting of our long - term goals and objectives will extend to all areas of the organization since each activity directly or indirectly affects the other.

Recess for lunch was taken from 12:35 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese's Report: ACTIVITIES, MEETINGS AND FUNCTIONS - SYD Reese was asked to come into the Board Room. She gave a summary report on Camp, State YAD - Royalty, and announced the planned participants scheduled to appear at the Texas Fraternal Congress in DeSoto.

CONTESTS AND CANDY SALES - Report was made on the ornament contest, T - shirt design contest, and status of the SPJST candy fund raising project for the youth.

NEW BUSINESS President Leshikar's New Business Matters: YOUTH DEPARTMENT - After discussion it was decided to schedule the 1990 Royalty for a Saturday and the SYAD on Sunday the day after just as it had been scheduled this year. The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unanimously.

Wednesday, November 8, 1989—VESTNIK/5 STATE FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR - Report was made that the deadline for return of entry forms is November 1. There was discussion about the selection period that will be looked at in making the selection in future years. Consideration of any changes was postponed until the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

FAMILY RECREATIONAL AREA - Consideration was given to the studies on the proposition to buy land for a family recreational facility.

Opinion was expressed that the idea of a family recreational area has merit but that due to the spending commitments of the last convention and economic conditions, it would not be prudent to buy the land at this time.

Options for leasing a facility for a trial period were also discussed. The possibility of establishing a fund that donations can be made to was also considered. Opinion was expressed that the convention action deals with purchase of land only. Lengthy discussion followed.

The following Referendum and Ballot form were formulated by the Supreme Lodge and approved unanimously. The motion was by Director Hrncir and seconded by Director Broz.

October 11, 1989 REFERENDUM Dear Delegates: The XXV Convention directed that the Supreme Lodge is to: "establish a committee to investigate the purchase of land to build an SPJST recreational facility to be used by all of its members.. "

The study revealed that approximately $500,000 would be necessary to provide the minimum needs of the recreation area and the minimum annual maintenance and operating expenses would be approximately $75,000. The Supreme Lodge has thoroughly investigated this matter and due to current economic conditions and due to the spending priorities as set by the delegates to the last convention, the money is not available to buy land for a recreational facility at this time. The Supreme Lodge will continue to investigate this project.

This issue is now submitted for your vote. In order for your ballot to be counted, it must arrive at the Supreme Lodge not later than November 30, 1989. A stamped, return envelope marked "Ballot" is enclosed for the return of your ballot.

Each delegate has the same number of votes as he or she had at the 1988 Convention. In the event of the death, incapacity or transfer to another lodge of a delegate, he or she shall automatically be replaced by the first substitute of that lodge.

Since the ballot will be kept by the Supreme Lodge Secretary - Treasurer unopened until the next regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge, it is important that you enclose only the ballot in the ballot envelope.

THIRD QUARTER INVESTMENTS The investments and real estate loans made during the third quarter were ratified on motion

BOND PORTFOLIO REVIEW Report was made that a bond portfolio review had been completed as bonds comprise some $27.1 million of our assets. It was reported that the bonds were valued to market and it was found that as of September 29, 1989, the market value exceeded book value of $2,544.43.

INVESTMENT POLICY - The general investment policy of the Society was taken up and reviewed. No changes were made and the Investment Policy was affirmed on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Hrncir and carried unanimously.

DISCOUNTS ON A AND B CERTIFICATES Chairman Pokladnik relinquished the chair to Vice Chairman Vanek and Chairman Pokladnik moved that the usual discount of 25 percent on premium be granted to all members in Class A and B whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an additional 25 percent discount when they attain the age of 75. The motion was seconded by Director Hrncir, the question was put and the motion was unanimously adopted. Chairman Pokladnik resumed chairing of the meeting.

REFUND TO LODGES - The formula on refund to local lodges for 1989 was taken up and discussed. It was decided to do a detailed work up of anticipated amounts that would be paid on each category in the formula for consideration and approval by mail poll of Supreme Lodge members. The procedure was approved on motion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously. As a matter of information, it was pointed out that the By - Laws authorize the Supreme Lodge to determine the amount of refund to lodges based on premium income and other incentive factors.

COMPUTER HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE - The Supreme Lodge was informed that due to increased use of the IBM System 3.6 computer, the Home Office was experiencing a problem due to lack of computer storage space. Additional problems would be encountered because IBM is phasing out support of the IBM System 36. The present computer was purchased in 1985. After discussion, a motion was adopted to get full information and costs, purchase or lease, for an IBM System AS 400 including software change enhancement costs for later consideration by the Supreme Lodge.

The motion was by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir's New Business Matters: Authorization was granted to Legal Advisor Kacir to attend a procedural Law Institute Seminar dealing with foreclosure litigation. The motion was

by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala and it carried unanimously.

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, November 8, 1989 Directors' New Business Matters: DIRECTOR VAVRA - He brought up for consideration the idea of setting up a fund to receive donations toward purchase of land for a Family Recreational Area. After discussion, consideration was postponed to the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

He commented that the additional financial information provided this meeting was helpful to the Board in the managment decisions that were made.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK He said he received good feedback on Vice President Gebala's participation in the last session of sales' seminars. He spoke favorably about the additional information available to the Board this meeting.

DIRECTOR BROZ - Stated he was confident the Society was on the right course for good growth.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He discussed the need for a handout giving brief historic and financial information about the Society. He suggested that information be made available to lodges on the correct display of the flag.

He said he was impressed by the wearing of Czech costumes at appropriate functions such as the Czech Fraternal Festival and encouraged Supreme Lodge members to participate in wearing costumes.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He asked for information regarding sales representatives in District VI and said he felt this had been a good meeting.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR - She reported on good information she obtained at the National Fraternal Congress in Scottsdale, Arizona and said she was disappointed that so few Supreme Lodge members attended.

She gave a detailed report on information she picked up at the NFCA and discussed a number of topics and their applicability to the SPJST. She stated that a number of the motivational speakers on the program had outstanding presentations.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - He also reported on attendance at the NFCA in Scottsdale and shared information of interest concerning legislation and other matters.

Miscellaneous New Business MUSEUM - The Supreme Lodge officers were authorized to decide if a display case should be obtained for the doll collection recently donated to the museum. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Hrncir and carried unanimously.

EMPLOYEES' SALARIES - The Supreme Lodge officers were charged with the responsibility of a recommendation for salary adjustments of employees to be considered in the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS - It was reported that a Christmas gift is traditionally provided to employees.

The Christmas gift chosen for this year is a choice ham. The motion was by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Vanek and it carried unanimously.

ROLLOVER OF CASH VALUE There was discussion about the problem involving rollover on commission conversions to single premium life certificates. A motion was adopted to eliminate the internal rollover commission on single premium life effective October 17, 1989, in accordance with the recommendation of Actuary John Agee and to monitor this area to be sure that the interest is complied with fully.

The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by President Leshikar and carried with ten voting in favor and Director Vanek and Director Broz voting opposition.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES - The Board took up the first draft of goals and objectives for the organization.

Discussion and a brainstorming session followed. Changes and additions were made to the draft and it was understood that the revised edition would be considered by the Supreme Lodge for further refinement and addition before its adoption will be considered. A copy of the revised draft will be provided - mailed to Supreme Lodge members.

Director Pokladnik stated that we have many heavy projects to work on.

He commented that we need brainstorming sessions such as the one just completed and discussed the need to fully explore programs before they are adopted and implemented.

The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin on January 8, 1990 at 9 a.m.

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 6:05 p.m.

From The SecretaryTreasurer's Office Texas Fraternal Congress Gears Up For Today's Challenges Leaders of Texas Fraternal Benefit Societies met in DeSoto at DeSoto Holiday Inn October 20-22 for a three-day Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) meeting. The meeting included programs directed to making the fraternal system more responsive to today's needs and problems, with emphasis on strengthening of the family. Other programs were geared to organize and better equip fraternal leaders to meet today's challenges.

Some 24 Fraternal Benefit Societies representing over 650,000 members in Texas participated in the 1989 TFC. This charitable force of various ethnic, religious, and vocational backgrounds stretches throughout Texas,flourishing in small communities as well as in large metropolitan areas. It provides a unique opportunity for service and provides a positive force for the good of mankind.

Delegates representing the SPJST at the TFC were: Howard Leshikar, Sid Pokladnik, Louis Hanus, Claudette Reese, Gene McBride, Rudy Sefcik, Jerome Hlavaty, and Leonard Mikeska. A number of SPJST members also visited all or a portion of the sessions.

Sid Pokladnik served as Chairman of the TFC Nominating Committee and was in charge of presentation during the Fraternal Affairs Section during which he shared many of the successful SPJST fraternal programs with the other fraternal leaders.

Talented youth from various Texas fraternal societies were selected to perform at a TFC Youth Spectacular held Saturday. SPJST State Youth Director Claudette Reese served as president of the TFC Youth Section and was responsible for putting the Youth Spectacular together as well as an informative program during the Youth Section session earlier Saturday afternoon. The SPJST youth did an outstanding job representing our organization and we were proud of them.

The youth entertainment is a welcome diversion from the long business meetings at the TFC. The business sessions always address areas of concern that cover a spectrum of topics such as legislation, regulations, challenges, fraternal programs, etc.

Probably the most important by product is the interchange of ideas among the various fraternal organizations and becoming acquainted with those who manage the affairs of the other societies. When organizations must rally together to defend the fraternal system against legislative threats, it helps to be personally acquainted with those representing the other societies.

Among the outstanding speakers at the TFC were: the well - known educator, John "Bud" Campbell of Mesquite, the keynote speaker at Friday's opening banquet; Actuary David Huff of Austin, Texas; and Ann La Point. of Temple, the Executive Director of DAIRE (Drug and Alcohol Awareness Information Referral and Education).

The site chosen for the 1990 TFC is Houston, Texas at the Adam's Mark Hotel.

News From Lodge

No. 32, Victoria Our lodge met on October 11, 1989.

President John Motal called the meeting to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members.

After roll call of officers, the minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved and the treasurer's report was given.

We are very proud of our youth club members for their participation in District VI YAD and of Eric Motal for competing at State YAD. Our Christmas Party will be held at the Community Center Annex on Sunday, December 3, 1989. The meal will be served at 2 p.m. with our lodge furnishing the meat and drinks and each family bringing a side dish and a dessert. We're looking forward to kicking off the Christmas season with a good time. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 8th at Citizens National Bank at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you then.

Corpus Christi When my stepfather, Frank C. Sacky, passed away six months ago, my mother, Annie M. Sacky, was already living with me. Two and one half years prior to that, Daddy suffered a stroke, and from that point on it was a downhill struggle for both of them.

I am writing this to the Vestnik and my fellow brothers and sisters in SPJST, because at the time of my stepfather's death, I was unable to pay tribute to a kind, gentle, caring man who was a true fraternalist. His life centered around his wife, his family, SPJST, and Sokol. Until my mother died last week, her whole life centered around her husband, family, Sokol, SPJST, and God. My brothers and I are fortunate to have been brought up in such a caring family, but more than that, to have grown up in our extended family of Sokol and SPJST friends.

Throughout life I have joined other organizations, made good friends and so have my brothers, Frank and George. But, there is nothing like being brought up among SPJST and Sokol members and knowing them generation after generation.

When I walked into SPJST - Sokol Hall after Mother's funeral and saw the pictures of our past presidents hanging in the hall, my son Gordon said, "There's Grandpa." There was also grandpa's father, Alois Sacky, the

first president of Sokol Corpus Christi, a wonderful man I was fortunate to meet and know when my mother married Frank C. Sacky.

There also hang pictures of Brothers Jim Kucera, Rudolph Troubil, Charlie Holasek and John Stasa, all now deceased and all my beloved friends from birth - friends of my parents and grandparents, Frank and Dolfi Stransky.

While we walked down the hallway, I was embraced by one wonderful friend after another. There were so many peoplepresent, that there wasn't time to speak to all of them.

I want to thank my sweet mother, stepfather and my grandparents for bringing me up in this caring SPJST Society and Sokol members. Their friends are many and scattered all over Texas and I want to thank all of them for the love and support they have given us all through the years.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas We observed a moment of silence for our departed members, Brother William Blue and Daniel H. Loykasek during our meeting last Monday. To the families, we extend our sincere sympathy.

The following committees gave reports: Entertainment by President Petr Hall Rental -- Brother Emil Petr gave dates and time of each one Sunshine Committee -- Get well cards were sent to Sister Bessie Tydlaska and Richard Kopecky Sister Betty Olson remarked -- the committee does a great job in sending the cards; they are appreciated.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported -five circles of dancers performed at the State Fair; also riding on the float during the parade, we saw our Lodge 84 King Kyle Matus and Queen Leslie Barnes, Past Queen Barbara Reznik, State King Bryan Becan and Stephanie Becan, past queen. The youth were having their meeting tonight and the teens will meet Halloween night and later visit various spook houses. The youth party will be Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m.

Sister Petr thanked Brother Olson for fixing cabinets in the Youth Room.

Dallas - Ennis Council meets at our Lodge No. 84, which will be the host lodge on November 15 at 7:30 p.m. If you come, bring pastry to be served.

Decorating Committee Report -- the committee decorates the hall on November 26 at 1 p.m., as you arrive bring a covered dish to be served after the hall is finished to look like Christmas is around the corner. Our Christmas Party will be December 17; social hour, 5 to 6 p.m.; dinner, 6 to 7 p.m.; youth program, 7 p.m. Please bring a covered dish as well as dessert enough to serve your family with the ham, cheese, bread, coffee that the lodge will furnish.

Don't forget canned goods for the needy and stay to see the installation of your lodge officers.

November 7 was set for our goulash dinner and surprises at 6 p.m.

Lodge No. 87, Temple Dear Members: President Ladis Navratil called our regular SPJST Lodge 87 meeting to order Friday evening, October 13th at 7 p.m.

Brother Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Silent tribute was paid ;to deceased member Lewis C. Jez, Sr. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. Also, correspondence was read and discussed.

The following new members and additional insurance were accepted into our lodge, namely: Leon Victor Jezek, Sr., Erin Nicole Fronek, Joshua John Fronek, Bonnie M. Rubac and Marvin James Vanecek, Jr. A warm welcome is extended to these members.

George and Millie Schiller were selected to represent Lodge No. 87 at the RVOS Banquet on October 17th at SPJST Lodge No. 47 Seaton Hall.

Ladis and Georgia Navratil were hosts for fun night for the October meeting and some outstanding spooks and goblins stopped by to say "hello."

The hall was beautifully decorated and "Casper, the Friendly Ghost" was on the front entrance door; stopping by was the wicked "ole witch" of the mountain and his cane, a beautiful feathered bird, a cute couple dressed in overalls and bandanas, a colonial lady and a mine worker in his safety hat, also "Popeye" and a clown, Millie Schiller, guest.

Friday, November 10th will be the next meeting at 7 p.m. Christmas meeting plans to be made at this time.

Entertainment was furnished by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra after a meal of dumplings, sauerkraut and pork.

The colors were presented by Crystal Wallace, Darlene and Marlene Migl and the national anthems were sung by our very own songbird, Helen Hegwood, accompanied by Naomi Spencer.

After the welcoming address by President Jerome Ermis, a Proclamation from the Mayor of Houston, Kathryn J. Whitmire, proclaiming Sunday, October 29, 1989 as CZECH DAY in Houston, Texas was presented to President Ermis.

Entertainment then continued with a very interesting and enjoyable program of Slavic dances by the Parosok Dance Group under the direction of Joe Gooden.

detailed and interesting background of Czech history with each of us.

The Choral Club under the direction of Brother Tim Kostom with the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra in the background kept our ears tuned in keenly until the Rhythm Cloggers under the direction of Moni Trappe really livened up the whole affair with their exhilarating and breathtaking dances. It took some few moments for each of us to regain our composure and to start breathing normally again.

The Parade of Costumes preceded the dance with music by the very popular polka band, The Vrazels.

During this whole celebration the heavens broke loose with a 3 to 4 - inch rain which brought happiness to everyone present. This did break a long dry spell for the folks in the Houston area.

You might say that this Czech Day celebration at Lodge Pokrok No. 88 did break the heavens open.

Choral Group Entertains

Seaton

Dear Members: The Choral Group consisting of Emily Stuteville, Vallie Zavodny, Georgia Sodek, Martha Klusacek, Dorothy Pechal, Mary Holick and Ralph Milek, our accompanist on the accordian, met at Burmont Nursing Home on October 25th. We had an enjoyable time visiting residents we knew in their rooms and then striking up many new acquaintances.

The director of Burmont Nursing Home really made us feel welcome.

They invited us to come again soon.

We sang a few songs and then Ralph answered the requests of the residents.

They joined in singing the songs they knew. They enjoyed the sing - song as much as we did. It makes us feel good to brighten their lives.

We decided we will go to Southland Villa this month. The date is Tuesday, November 14th at 7 p.m. If you have a loved one there, try to come visit them when we are there. We also know many at this nursing home. We will decide if we shall meet on the 28th or not.

At this writing, Georgia Sodek is in the King's Daughters Hospital, but is to be released today. We need you to sing, so get well soon, Sister Georgia!

Sewing Circle News

It is hard to believe that Christmas is only 55 days away. Some people have already finished their Christmas shopping. I like to wait until after Thanksgiving; most of the time, two weeks before Christmas.

Our Circle met September 14th and October 12th, with fairly good attendance at both meetings. Our

Secretary Ella Zmolek read the August minutes which were approved.

Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report for September and October. Both reports were approved.

Sister Roberts took the October minutes, in the absence of Sister Zmolek.

Sunshine Stacie Hejny sent a get well card to Sister Millie Vytopil; also, a get well card and money gift were sent to the following sisters: Betty Marusak, who is in a rehabilitation center in Corsicana for therapy; Stacie Hejny, Anne Zvolanek and Hattie Moucka.

Sister Frances Vita was on the sick list, also Ernest Huff, who is our regular visitor. He is Sister Vita's brother and uncle of Sisters Liddie Pavelka and Sidney Bridewell. A speedy recovery is wished to each one.

Sympathy is expressed to Doris and Bill Foit. Two of their brothers - in law died in October.

Flowers were sent to the services for Sister Helen Jo Vrla. A sympathy card was sent to Sister Helen Vrla, Sr. A thank you note was received from Arnold Vrla for the flowers.

Sisters who thanked the Circle for the get well card and money gift were Hattie Moucka, Anne Zvolanek and Stacie Hejny.

Sister Liddie Pavelka brought get well cards for Anne Zvolanek and Ernest Huff, all of us signed the cards.

Sister Emilia Harrison is our new vice - president.

Otile Haskovec was welcomed into our Circle as a new member. My apology to Otile for listing her as Otile Honza in my last letter; that was her maiden name.

If you haven't paid your yearly dues, please do so. Sisters who are 80 years or older do not have to pay dues; they are honorary members.

We will have a catered luncheon at our December meeting. It will be free to members; the cost will be $5 for guests, this includes the husbands.

Reservations need to be made at our November meeting or shortly after.

We will exchange Christmas gifts.

Please bring a $3 gift.

Krouzek quilt was quilted in September and Sister Wilma Jelinek's in October. Tickets for prizes on the Krouzek quilt are $1, members only can participate. The drawing will be held at our November 9th meeting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to birthday sisters both months. A birthday card was given to birthday sisters present.

Memorials received were from Sister Millie Vytopil in memory of her daughter and son - in - law, Evelyn and Milton Pokladnik, and her granddaughter, Cheree Mohon; Sisters Tupy and Libbie Wisniewski in memory of Sister Helen Joe Vrla.

Door prizes were brought by Sisters Doris Foit, Agnes Janecka, Liddie Pavelka and Sidney Bridewell.

Congratulations on their 55th wedding anniversary to Liddie and Jim Pavelka and 50th to Alene and Willie Skrivanek.

Sister Alice Tupy Roberts attended all the activities, except the football game, of the 50 - year Ennis High School reunion on October 21st. The turnout was wonderful. Everyone looked great and a little older, of course. It was sad to learn that 37 had died. There were 76 who graduated in 1939. We are planning to have another one in 1992. Reunions are a lot of fun.

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92 met on October 10, 1989 at 10 a.m.

The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by Vice President Lillie McMillen.

Secretary Clara Marchioni read the minutes of our last meeting and they were approved as read.

Sunshine Chairperson Lillie McMillen said that Mary Pavey was sick with pneumonia and that Flora Koci fell and hurt her chest. We wish them well and all others who may be on the sick list.

For our Thanksgiving dinner on November 14th, we will meet at the lodge and then all go to "Lotus Restaurant" at 6299 Grandberry Road. After dinner members may return to the lodge and play games, so we hope all members plan to go which should be a lot of fun.

It was nice to see Dona Hubenak back from the trip to Germany. Dona said she had a wonderful time and even found some of her relatives in Germany.

We had two couples in our Ladies' Circle who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, one being Claude and Clara Marchioni with a reception at St. Thomas Parish Hall, Fort Worth; the other couple included Frank and Marie Tesar, who had a party at SPJST Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth. It was my pleasure to attend it and it was a lovely party. We wish all of them our best wishes.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Mary Cihacek, Sharon Gibson, Louise Oujesky, Mary Polacek, Mary Windham and Alfred Svacek.

Ida Mayer was the door prize winner.

After blessing all members enjoyed a good dinner. We wish to thank Frances Simmank for preparing turkey and dressing for us. It sure was good!

A fund - raiser to benefit three families will be held in St. Joseph's Parish in Rowena, Texas on Sunday, November 19, 1989.

The money will be used to help defray medical expenses.

One of the recipients of this benefit will be Susan Urbanek Bohnenberger.

Until her illness, she was District IV youth counselor who had served in this position for the past three years.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be meeting in Fayetteville, Texas on November 11, 1989 at the SPJST Hall. The Fayette County Czech Heritage Society will host the program and meeting. Lunch will be served for a small charge.

The program will begin at 10 a.m. with music and singing provided by members of the Czech Heritage Society of Fayette County. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The state meeting will begin at 1 p.m. with election of state officers. This is a very important meeting. Again, the meeting will be held in FAYETTEVIL L E SPJST HALL. See you there!

Dear Mr. Sefcik: I wish to share with you and other members of the SPJST my hobby of collecting political memorabilia. I entered this hobby about 3 years ago and currently have over 1,000 examples of political buttons, ribbons, poll cards and posters. Although there are many different avenues a political collector can take, my specialties are U.S. Presidentials and Texas politicals.

Although political items go as far back as the era of George Washington, modern day political buttons as we know them came into wide use in the 1896 election between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan.

Each collector of political memorabilia tends to have a personal favorite president he or she collects.

Mine happens to be Teddy Roosevelt, but I collect all presidents, as well as Third Party items and Favorite Sons. I collect winners as well as losers.

The SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association will have its meeting on Sunday, November 12, 1989 at the SPJST Elk Hall in Elk, Texas beginning at 2 p.m.

SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Meeting

The annual Kovar - Volcik - Prcin reunion was held October 29, 1989 at the Circleville VFW Hall. The noon meal was served to approximately 100 in attendance. Terry Loessin asked Grace before the meal. David London was in charge of the bidding on all of the delicious homebaked and home canned goods, which was a big success.

A short business meeting was held and the next reunion is October 7, 1990 at the same location. Officers are President -- Erna Kovar, Vice President -- Leslie Loessin, Secretary -Marie Ann Ripple, Treasurer -- Ruby Loessin and Reporter -- Evelyn Leshikar.

The oldest in attendance was Herminia Wentrcek. Little Bryce London, son of Dr. Peggy Leshikar and David London, was the youngest (18 months) in attendance. Longest married went to Harry Volcik of West, Texas and the shortest distance, again, to Leslie Loessin family of Circleville.

Everyone had a great time and were looking forward the 1990 reunion.

SPJST Youth Perform For Texas Fratneral Congress The Holiday Inn, DeSoto, was the site for the 1989 Texas Fraternal Congress meeting. This year it was my honor and privilege to coordinate the Youth Spectacular Program.

Once again, King Bryan Becan, Lodge 84 and Queen Stephanie Roye, Lodge 30 did an outstanding job in delivering their State winning speeches and emceeing the program. Both of them have been very busy representing the Society since their coronation in August.

The Junior Beseda Circle from Lodge 84, Dallas did a great job in performing the Czech heritage dance, the Beseda, for the crowd. Members of that circle are: Meribeth and C.J. Novak, Kelli and Aaron Kopecky, Chris Coker, Lauren Petr, Amy Pennartz and Neal Andreason. Carey and Allyson Holman from Lodge 187, Round Rock got the people tapping their feet with their piano duet to "The Entertainer" and "Boogie Woogie."

Lenice Kaspar from Lodge 30, Taiton did a superb job with her tap dance to "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Brian Faust and Jennifer Kubin from Lodge 39, Bryan mesmerized the audience with their dancing and acrobatic abilities with their dance to "The Right Stuff."

The program concluded with Stephanie Becan and Leslie Barnes of Lodge 84 performing their entertaining and heart - warming skit to "How Could I Ever Let You Go." I am excited to report that the SPJST, for the second year, consecutively, walked away with first, second and third places in both the Scrapbook and Poster Contests. 13 Dime Box Halloween Party

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 13 in Dime Box had their Halloween Party and sleepover on Friday, October 27 after the school carnival.

The party began about 9 p.m. at the SPJST Hall with various activities such as football, skate boarding, roller skating, and games. At 10 p.m., our Youth Leaders Mrs. Doris Ford and Miss LaDonna Ford led us on a hike to a surprise haunted house. A special thanks to everyone who helped set up the house and to Miss Mary Kubena for letting our youth club use the house for the spook house.

After we walked back to the hall, refreshments were served. The party was over about 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Everyone had a great time.

6 Cottonwood Youth Celebrates Halloween

Dear Readers, We had a Halloween Party on Friday, October 27, 1989. We had a pinata and treats. Everyone had a great time trying to break the pinata.

Christmas is right around the corner, we will be working on crafts for the rest home each Friday night.

We will also practice our play for the Christmas program. Everyone needs to try to attend every Friday night.

39 Bryan Youth Attend Party Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 39 had a Halloween Party on Sunday, October 29, 1989 between 2 to 4 p.m. We played a lot of games which included scavenger hunt, who's missing and who's the ghost under the sheet.

We had two visitors who attended our party.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 12, 1989. The charity project for November will be canned food items for the needy.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Holland, Lodge No. 80, on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother BOYCE UNBERHAGEN, who died October 23, 1989 in a Temple hospital at the age of 74.

Services for Brother Unberhagen were at 2 p.m. on October 25 at Goodnight Funeral Home Chapel, in Bartlett with Rev. Jack Hopkins officiating. Burial was in the Holland City Cemetery.

Brother Unberhagen was born in Seattle, Texas, and was owner operator of the Super Service Station in Holland for 51 years. He was also a mechanic. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Holland.

Survivors are his wife, Dorothy Unberhagen of Holland; two daughters, Mary Ann Gilliland of Sparks and Joan Kurtz of Holland; one son, Bill Unberhagen of Holland; two stepdaughters, Rayetta Hendrix and Dorothy Jean Speakman, both of Holland; one stepson, J.R. Jones of Lake Belton; one sister, Mrs. Oscar Grossman, Jr. of Heidenheimer; five grandchildren and four step grandchildren.

Expression Of Sympathy The Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood,on behalf of our members, expresses sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother FRANKIE LEE UPTMORE, SR., who died July 16, 1989 in an Arlington hospital.

Rosary was recited Tuesday, July 18 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in West.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 19 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, with Rev. Earl Hedberg, celebrant.

Burial followed at St. Martin's Cemetery in Tours.

Mr. Uptmore was born December 9, 1933 in Tours, Texas. He lived in the Tours - West area all of his life. He was a rancher and farmer and was a salesman for Uptmore Motors for a number of years. He married Shellie Bell on February 28, 1961.

Survivors include his wife, Shellie Uptmore; two sons, Jimmy Uptmore of West and Frankie Lee Uptmore, Jr. of Austin; one daughter, Lisa Martin of West; one brother, Ernest (Ernie) Uptmore of West; four sisters, Mrs. Felix (Hattie) Mynar of West, Mrs. Raymond (Adeline) Finn of Bellmead and Mrs. Louise Lucien and Mrs. Gerald Barton, both of Dallas; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association or to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Uptmore was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the officers of SPJST Lodge No. 97 in Placedo, Texas wish to express our sincere sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of our dear departed member JOHN M. SCHOVAJSA, of Inez, Texas, who passed away at 12:07 Friday, September 15, 1989 in a Victoria hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born February 9, 1928 in Zabcikville, Texas, son of the late Emil and Albina Jan_ecek Schovajsa. A lifetime resident of Victoria County, he was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of Victoria County Farm Bureau, and Victoria County Extension Service Crops Committee.

A member of the Placedo Brethren Church, he was actively involved with the Evangelical Brethren Camping Program.

He married the former Dorothy Foit on March 4, 1950.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, September 16 at Colonial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel on the Cuero Highway with. Rev. Gary Garrison officiating. Burial followed in Colonial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Foit Schovajsa of Inez; a daughter, Linda Kay Schovajsa of Inez; a son, J.D. Schovajsa of Inez; two brothers, Henry Schovajsa of La Grange and Edwin Schovajsa of Belton and 3 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Schovajsa in 1981.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Pustejovsky, Norman Fuzzell, Steven Lovecky, Edward Rister, Tony Motl and Scott Schovajsa.

Honorary pallbearers were the men of the Placedo Brethren Church.

Funeral services for Sister Dittfurth were held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 23rd at Zion United Church of Christ in Kurten with the Rev. Barney Federwisch of a Houston United Church of Christ officiating.

Burial was in the Restever Memorial Park under the direction of Hillier.

Sister Dittfurth was born and lived in the Wheelock area the earlier years of her life. Later moving to Bryan, she owned and operated a snack bar and grocery store. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Kurten and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 94, Wheelock. She was a member of SPJST for more than 50 years.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold Dittfurth of Bryan; three sons and daughters - in - law, James and Darlene Moon of Bryan, Steven and Karen Dittfurth of Houston, Ronald and Kathy Moon of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter and son - in - law, Sherry Moon Wages and Carson Wages of Mineola; a brother, Adolph Scasta of Franklin and 11 grandchildren.

She was a lifelong member of Sokol and a member of the SPJST. She is survived by two sons, Frank Sacky of Corpus Christi and George H. Sacky of Weslaco; daughter, Anna M. Moss of Corpus Christi; brother, Frank Harris of Dallas; six grandsons, Page Sacky, Stacy Sacky, Kevin Sacky, Paul Sacky, Leon Castro and Gordon Castro; two granddaughters, Linda Lynn of Natchez, Mississippi and Milena Sacky of Corpus Christi; four great - grandchildren and one great - great - granddaughter.

Features Rejcek - Pechal Wedding Kimberly Ann Rejcek and Tommy Louis Pechal were united in the sacrament of Holy Matrimony on Saturday, August 5, 1989, at 2 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Ennis.

The Nuptial Mass was performed by Father Rudy Kos. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Rejcek of Ennis.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Pechal of Ennis.

The bride graduated from Ennis High School in June, 1986 and Navarro College in May, 1988. She is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Sociology at Sam Houston State University.

The groom graduated from Ennis High School in May, 1984, Texas State Technical Institute in February, 1987, and Texas Aero Tech in August, 1988.

He is currently employed as a flight instructor and mechanic for the A&M Flying Club at Easterwood Airport and light instructor at Bryan Municipal Airport.

Music performed on the organ before and during the ceremony included: "Household of Faith," "Gentle Woman," "Our Father," "The Wedding Song," "Follow Me," "Sunrise, Sunset," "On Eagle's Wings," "Ave Maria," "Mother at Your Feet." As the bride was escorted by her father down the aisle, "Rigaudon" was played on the trumpet. The bride and groomlalong with their wedding party, marched out of church to "Praise the Lord With Drums and Cymbals".

The altar was decorated with arrangements of peach gladioli and gerbera daisies, snap dragons, alstroemeria and cushion poms.

Boston ferns and palms were situated a nong candelabras that curved around

the back of the altar. The first three pews on each side held aisle candles, greenery and fresh peach arrangements. The remaining pews held aisle candles, greenery and large peach bows.

The bride wore a Venus designer gown of ivory satin with a sweetheart neckline. The gown had short sleeves accented with a beaded antique lace overlay. The bodice was fitted with a basque waistline and an open back. It was heavily beaded with iridescent sequins and pearls. The front of the skirt and cathedral length train were also adorned with antique lace and pearls.

The Darla headpiece she wore consisted of a small cap with tine pearls and a very thick pouf of illusion that fell into a cathedral length veil. It was scattered with pearls, During the reception, the long veil was detached,leaving a fingertip veil.

The bride carried a cascade of ivory made of day lilies, roses, stephanotis, alstroemeria and English ivy. Pearl sprays and loops were entwined into the bouquet. Long streamers tied into love knots fell among the ivy. An antique lace bow with a hint of peach gave it a final touch. The bouquet was made by the bride's mother.

Her something new was a pair of pearl earrings, something old, a lace handkerchief, something borrowed, a strand of pearls, something blue, the traditional garter.

Elaine Novy, the bride's best friend and college roommate, served as the maid of honor. The bridemaids were Brandi Collard, Jennifer Veselka, Rose Pechal, Sharon Thomas, Cindy Pechel, Monica Pechal, Debbie Novy, Karri Huff and Melody Juricek.

The flower girls were Morgan Rejcek and Allison Pokladnik.

The maid of honor, bridesmaids and flower girls wore identical peach tea length dresses featuring a sweetheart neckline, short puffed sleeves, and a fitted bodice. In the back at the waist, a bow was situated where three tiers fell into a full skirt. They all wore shoes dyed to match, pearl colored

hose and a strand of pearls around their necks.

The maid of honor and bridesmaids wore clips with tiny peach orchids, gypsophila, pearl sprays and narrow ribbon loops in their hair.

The flower girls wore wreaths of peach azaleas, miniature carnations, gypsophila, narrow ribbon loops and streamers falling down the back.

The maid of honor and bridesmaids carried stalks of peach gladioli, trumpet vine, peach blossoms, dogwood and leather leaf with a large lace bow.

The flower girls carried hand crocheted baskets with peach azaleas, gypsophila, and tiny bows situated on each side of the basket handles.

The bride's mother wore a light peach tea length silk dress with an imported lace overlay that was accented by pearls. She had shoes to match and wore a corsage of light peach alstroemeria and gypsophilia.

The groom's mother wore a tea length peppermint green handkerchief dress of brocade silk trimmed with crystal tear drops. She had shoes to match and wore an orchid corsage.

James Martinek, longtime friend of the groom, served as the best man. The groomsmen were Jimmy Pustejovsky, Mike Pustejovsky, Justin Lee, Tim Thomas, Larry Pechal, Don Pechal, Mark Novy, Kevin Collard and Laddy Rejcek.

The ring bearer was Randee Rot ramel .

Ushers were Randall Zaidle, Danny Zaidle, Benny Trojacek and Wallace Maloney.

The groom wore a black full dress Christian Dior tuxedo with an ivory shirt, vest and bow tie. His boutonniere consisted of a cluster of stephanotis, gypsophila and English ivy. It was made by his mother.

The groomsmen, ring bearer and ushers wore identical black Christian Dior tuxedos with black cummerbunds and bow ties and ivory shirts. They wore peach rosebud boutonnieres.

The bride's father wore a black Christian Dior tuxedo with a black vest

and bow tie. and an ivory shirt. The groom's father wore a black dress suit with a black cummerbund and bow tie., and an ivory shirt. They both wore pale peach rosebud boutonnieres.

A reception, dinner and dance were held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ennis.

The entryway was decorated as a garden scene with a cement bench and a waterfall with an abundance of greenery and azaleas surrounding it. A gazebo held the gifts. A tree that was decorated with birdseed bags and a birdhouse were also part of the scene.

The registry table was covered with peach and ivory lace cloths with a crystal vase holding two dozen peach roses serving as a centerpiece. Also on this table were a music box cathedral, unity candle, bridal portrait and a crystal bowl holding small peach rosebuds that were distributed to each guest.

A long table with a rounded center held the bride's cake that was made by Mrs. Irene Kubin -- aunt of the groom.

It was a five - tiered confection lavished with peach gladoli, miniature orchids and rosebuds, stephanotis, alstroemeria, gypsophilia and leather leaf.

Members of the houseparty included Diana Kopec, Jeanette Henning, Lorrie Anderle, Jennifer Compton, Shelia Cox and Tim Cox. The groom's cake was made by Mrs. Margaret Spaniel. It was a three - tier German chocolate cake adorned with fresh fruit.

On the rounded area of the table was a tall silver candelabrum entwined with English ivy, peach lilies and trumpet vine. Around its base were peach ceramic baskets containing mints and nuts.

A silver punch bowl was setting next to the bride's cake and a silver champagne cooler was setting next to the groom's cake.

The guest tables were covered in ivory with a wide peach ribbon down the center. Each held a ceramic peach basket with a pair of ivory doves resting on the handles. They were filled with peach azaleas, German statice greenery.

The dinner consisted of barbecue brisket, klobase, parsley potatoes sauerkraut, green beans, fresh rolls, and a relish tray. The dessert table held many Czech pastries centered around a beautiful fruit sculpture created by Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Kubin.

Lone Star Czechs and the Ennis Brass provided music throughout the evening. The traditional wedding march was led by Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Svehlak.

The couple spent the evening at the Raphael House in Ennis and the next day hosted a surprise 25th wedding anniversary for the bride's parents.

They left for their honeymoon to San Antonio on Monday.

The night before the wedding, a rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom's parents. It was a buffet dinner of appetizers and finger foods. After dinner, the honored couple presented gifts of appreciation to their wedding party.

The couple is at home in Huntsville, Texas.

Mr. and' Mrs. Mike Tekell

Spaniel - Tekell Wedding After a traditional Czech wedding at St. John's Nepomucene Church on July 21, 1989 and a relaxing honeymoon in San Antonio, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Tekell are at home in Ennis.

Their double ring ceremony was held at 7 p.m. with Rev. Mark Hughes and Rev. T.J. Willingham officiating.

The bride is the former Susan Spaniel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Spaniel of Telico. Susan is a 1981 Ennis High graduate and a floral designer for Amelia Ann Florist.

The bridegroom, son of Mrs. Bruce Tekell and the late Mr. Tekell of Ennis, is a 1979 Ennis High graduate and is co - manager of Tekell Produce and Plants and fifth term president of the Ennis Volunteer Fire Department.

Upon entering the church, guests registered among several Boston ferm arrangements. Four candelabra accented the tabernacle while large palm trees framed the altar.

Arrangements of white gladioli, Baker's fern and commadore jade designed by Judy Spaniel were placed in each of the four blue arches. Side altar decorations were arrangements of red roses and Baker's fern. Every other pew was marked with a white pew bow.

The bride, given in marriage by her parents, wore a floor - length gown designed and created by her mother.

The Ceske kroj (Czech costume) included a white blouse made of iridescent organza, vest of brocade taffeta, skirt of satin crepe and apron of embroidered chiffon seeded with pearls and sequins. To complete her Czech attire the bride chose a halo of seedpearls and silk illusion.

The bride carried a nosegay designed

by Ramona Jakubik consisting of nine white roses (symbolizing the ninth child), stephanotis, softened with baby's breath and entwined with a blue rosary from Rome which was a gift from her mother. The rosary was her something blue; pearl earrings and necklace for something borrowed, from Amy Nash; a Koruna (a Czech coin) for something old, given to the

bride by James and Sandra Williford, and her wedding gown was her something new.

Miss Jeannie Spaniel, sister of the bride, served as maid of honor.

Bridesmaids were Miss Judy Spaniel, sister of the bride; Diane Satsky, Marci Satsky, Kim Trojacek, Theresa Satsky, nieces of the bride; Amy Nash, Kim Prachyl, Lou Manning, friends of the bride; Christi Cheshire, friend of the bride and bridegroom, and Meribeth Novak, cousin of the bride. Flower girls were Brittany Spaniel, Katie and Katie Henry, nieces of the bride, and Beth Valek, special little friend of the bride.

The bridemaids wore traditional Czech costumes in colors of blue, yellow, lavender, green, peach and pink. Blouses were of sparkling organza with lace yolks; embossed taffeta fashioned the fitted vests and tea length skirts were accented by white authentic Czech lace. Most of the bridesmaids' costumes were created by the bride's mother with the exception of the little girls' costumes, designed and made by Sherry Spaniel, sister - in - law of the bride; Kim Prachyl's by her mother, Evelyn, and Mary Jane Odlozil created Beth Valek's.

The bridemaids' bouquets of silk spring flowers consisting of roses, daisies, heather, forget - me - nots, alstromeria and button poms, tied with satin bows to match each girl's dress were created by the bride's two sisters, Judy Spaniel and Karleen Henry.

The bride's mother wore a fushia street - length crepe chiffon dress. The bridegroom's mother chose a tan crepe street - length dress wih lace overlay, trimmed with seedpearls. Both mothers wore corsages of white roses and gypsophila, designed by Cindy Brazil. Brothers and sisters of the couple wore matching boutonnieres and corsages of red roses and gypsophila, designed by Ramona Jakubik and Cindy Brazil.

Harvie Cheshire, best friend of the bridegroom, served as best man.

Groomsmen were Tommy Spaniel,

brother of the bride; John Trojacek, Bobby Satsky, Ernest Jakubik, Jr., Philip Spaniel, nephews of the bride; Chris Tekell, nephew of the bridegroom; Gordon Macalik, Ricky McElhaney, Kevin Haynes, friends of the bridegroom, and David Shackleford, friend of the bride.

Escorts of the flower girls were Chris Brazil, George Spaniel III and Scott Spaniel, nephews of the bride, and Bradley Cheshire, "special" nephew of the bridegroom. Candlelighters were Danny and Lonnie Satsky, nephews of the bride. Gift bearers were Andrew Jakubik, Cody Brazil and Brent Satsky, nephews of the bride, and Chris Cheshire, "special" nephew of the bridegroom. The family Bible, a gift from the Satsky family, was carried into church by Cody Brazil while Andrew Jakubik carried the Mass Book. The wedding rosary of white silk roses was carried by Brent Satsky assisted by Chris Cheshire.

The ushers were Marcel Brunel and Tracy Ralston, friends of the bride's family; Mike Chennault, friend of the bride; Stanley Sharp and Harvey (Bubba) Dixon, Jr., friends of the bridegroom.

The bridegroom surprised the bride by wearing a white embossed taffeta vest, accented with iridescent sequins.

To complete his attire, white after five pleated pants, white dinner shirt and white bowtie and cummerbund were worn. He also wore engraved cufflinks which belonged to his father.

The groom's boutonniere was made of white roses, stephanotis and gypsophila.

The groomsmen wore pastel vests of embossed taffeta, after - five black pleated pants, black ties and cummerbunds. Ushers wore black embossed taffeta vests. All groomsmen wore boutonnieres of silk spring flowers. Ushers' boutonnieres were white silk carnations.

During the Mass, the Dallas Czech Choir sang "Chapel in the Valley," "Alleluia," "At This Sacrifice" and `Audio." The First Reading was read

by David Shackleford and Second Reading by Marci Satsky who also recited prayers of the Faithful, responded by the Dallas Czech Choir.

During the Offertory gifts of wheat were carried by Brent Satsky, grapes carried by Chris Cheshire, water and wine offered by Andrew Jakubik and Cody Brazil presented the bread.

As the bride and bridegroom placed the wedding rosary on the Blessed Mother's altar, Caryn Spaniel, cousin of the bride, sang "On This Day." A reading from Matthew 18:18 was read in silence by the couple.

Altar boys were Patrick Kubin, friend of the bridegroom, and Randy Barak and Brian Holland, cousins of the bride. Eucharistic ministers were George Satsky, brother-in-law of the bride; Scooter Holland, cousin of the bride; Becky Griffith and Joyce Plasek, friends of the bride.

Following the ceremony, the couple was rescued by a 1927 American La France hook and ladder fire truck which belongs to the Evening Lions Club. Driver Walter Alexander and William Percival carried out the Czech theme by wearing vests. The bride and bridegroom, along with the best man, Harvie Cheshire, rode the fire engine to the KJT Hall to the reception.

Upon arrival the couple was greeted at a special greeting area designed by Mary Ann Trojacek and Karleen Henry. which consisted of white wrought iron garden furniture, green plants and fresh blooming plants of all colors. They were greeted by Tonya Emerson, special friend of the bride's

family; Jackie Betik, Carol Rejcek and Helen Pechal. On the registry table, portraits were displayed next to a framed invitation, gift from Helen Pechal, accented by a Czech vase filled with assorted fresh spring flowers, gift from the James Willifords all sat atop a beautiful hand crocheted tablecloth made by Juanita Bruner, grandmother of the groom.

Dinner followed immediately with a meal consisting of roast beef, new parsley potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, tea and coffee. The houseparty consisted of Scott Kitchens, Kim and Tommy Pechal, Lorraine Nash; James and Sandra Williford, Rudy and Jan Ozymy, Scooter and Rita Holland, Karen Vrana, Chris Macon, Craig Zabojnik, Cindy Svehlak, Shawn Mounts, Charlotte Hagler and Dorothy Pustejovsky. Rosie and Linda Trojacek were in charge of the kitchen.

On the cake table there was a large arrangement of red and white roses, magnolia leaves and Baker's fern, the bride's four - tiered strawberry and vanilla cake was made by the bride's mother. Fresh flowers were throughout each tier; ato p them was a Precious Moments figurine of a bride and fireman entitled "Love Rescued Me." A portrait of the bride stood next to the cake. The cake was served

by Sharon McDaniel and Cyndi Shackleford. A garland of smilax and fresh spring flowers entwined the two candelabra on the table.

The bridegroom's cake, served by Denise Tekell, sister - in - law of the bridegroom, was a three - tiered creation of German chocolate, French vanilla and chocolate. A ladder fire truck centered within fresh fruit accented the cake.

The round champagne table held the crystal punchbowl and champagne glasses. The beverage was served by Don and Olga Krysinski. The cake tables and the champagne were arranged by Linda Novak.

There were two pastry tables with a wide variety of Czech kolache, strudels and pies. The tables were decorated with honeydew melon carvings and swans placed in the center of candelabra surrounded by magnolia leaves. A wishing well carved from watermelon with a fruit ensemble was placed at the end of the serving bar.

All were designed by Kathy Satsky.

In the center of the stage, there was a waterfall surrounded by an assortment of green plants and fresh spring flowers arranged by Kathy Satsky and Sherry Spaniel, offset by life - sized portraits of Czech children

by Cindy Brazil.

Music was furnished by "Country Seat" with Charlie Patak, cousin of the bride, adding a Czech flair, also dressed in a traditional Czech costume.

Mary Ann and Marvin Trojacek led the traditional Czech grand march.

Special songs by Caryn Spaniel were sung throughout the dance. Special toasts of champagne were offered to the newlyweds, first by Don and Olga Krysinski, Godparents of the bride; next by James and Linda Novak, cousins of the bride, and then by Harvie Cheshire, best man. The newlyweds drank their champagne out of crystal Czech champagne wine glasses borrowed from George Spaniel, Jr., the bride's brother.

Rice bags were handed out by Eric Pierce, special nephew of the bride, and Joseph Spaniel, nephew of the bride. The newlyweds chose matching western attire as they left for their honeymoon in Dallas, then on to San Antonio the next morning.

There was a bridal luncheon held at Francisco's, and a shower given by the members of the Ladies Sunday School Class of Grace Temple Baptist Church.
