-- Florence Foley *** One question that may puzzle you as a parent is whether you should spend money on life insurance for your children. If your answer is "yes," then obviously the next question is: "How much insurance and what kind?"

There are several answers to these questions.

In most families, the basic need for life insurance on the father (and secondarily the mother) far outweighs any insurance needs of the children.

To skimp on the breadwinner's coverage in order to insure the children could be a mistake. Parents need to be insured.

Children's needs. But after the parents are adequately covered, additional insurance on the children is worth considering, not that they have much need for protection. Through high school, most youngsters have no serious financial responsibilities. They may earn some income, but rarely is anyone really dependent on them.

Their only immediate need for life insurance is usually just to cover final expenses in case of death. Death at any age involves expenses.

Chances of death at this stage of life are fairly remote -- well under one death a year per 1,000 youngsters through high school age.

A few of them lose their lives, mainly from accidents. But the risk of having to pay final expenses on a youngster can be covered at very low cost under the new SPJST Modified Juvenile Plan. Each child's insurance continues until he or she reaches adulthood (age 25), when it can be converted to an individual life policy providing more for the youngster's protection.

But, for families who can afford it, starting off with an individual policy on each child offers advantages worth considering: Because mortality rates are so low for children, a youngster can get lifelong protection at a very low premium rate that won't increase as they grow older.

The total premium outlay for the rest of one's life (based on normal life expectancy) will likely be lower than if same policy bought at almost any older age. And, in later years, it will have a larger cash value than if it were purchased at any subsequent age.

A policy purchased at this stage of life can serve as a solid base on which to build a lifelong financial program.

Through their own policy, a youngster can gain practical experience in

of its importance to family life insurance protection. *** The weekend of October 20th through 22nd was indeed a busy schedule for many fraternalists throughout the State of Texas when they assembled for the Texas Fraternal Congress Convention held at Holiday Inn at De Soto, Texas.

SPJST Society was well represented from throughout the state including the Youth Spectacular held Saturday evening before a full house.

Our youth members from Bryan, Dallas, Round Rock and Taiton lodges presented their State Youth Achievement Day (SYAD) entry selections, plus SPJST State King Bryan Becan and State Queen Stephanie Roye did a fine job emceeing the spectacular program.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese was in charge of the Youth Spectacular this year and our SPJST youth did a wonderful job in representing SPJST during TFC presentation. Our SPJST youth also achieved first, second and third place prizes in their posters and scrapbooks, among the scrapbooks' display was also Robstown YC. Our State Youth Director was recognized for her efforts with a certificate presentation from Texas Fraternal Congress and those SPJST members who were in attendance were very proud of her accomplishment in portraying what the SPJST is all about pertaining to the youth of tomorrow. OUR HATS OFF TO YOU, SISTER CLAUDETTE! The SPJST Supreme Lodge was represented by President Howard Leshikar, Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska (in charge of Publicity), District III Director Sid Pokladnik (who served on the Nominating Committee), and District V Director Louis Hanus. Your editor and his wife attended the Saturday sessions and youth spectacular.

There were speakers with interesting topics to promote fraternal life insurance and sales with strong emphasis who touched on "Service" to your prospect(s). The remarks by Mr. John Campbell, Ms. Ann LaPoint, Mr. James L. Mounce and Mr. David I Huff were greatly appreciatied at the 89th Annual TFC Convention.

Several good reports were also heard from various panel chairpersons who described their fraternal activities for their respective members. Our SPJST has a well - rounded program with emphasis of interest for the entire family. *** There is no cure for a canker sore, but you do not have to simply grin and bear it. To numb the pain, you might try a medicated mouthwash like Chloraseptic, or apply a topical gel such as Zilactin, a new non prescription medication available in most drugstores. You can also help soothe these ulcers on the gums, tongue or inner cheeks by avoiding acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, as well as chocolate, sweets and nuts.

Antacid tablets like Rolaids or Tums will also help. Gargling with hydrogen peroxide may thwart secondary infection from bits of food. Generally, canker sores are caused by an irritation in the month -- perhaps from a bitten lip or jagged filling -- or by emotional stress or sensitivity to certain foods.

They heal in about a week. Sores that last much longer may signal more serious problems, such as a drug reaction or blood disorder, and should be checked by a physician. ***

Lodge No. 19, Velehrad It may be surprising for a lot of you folks to hear from good old Velehrad again after a long absence.

Well, we put up our old SPJST Lodge 19 in its shape and had it painted so it looks like Velehrad again.

Now we are having the cemetery cleaned up, so this is to remind your young and old folks that those who have their grandparents or any kinfolks buried in this cemetery to please donate money for this worthy cause. There are plenty of young folks who have relatives buried here in Velehrad.

We had a collection about 16 years ago to have it cleaned and we did it,

which looks very nice. We had a fellow with two sons who are both resting in the Praha cemetery and my husband and me doing all that work that time.

My husband is at rest now almost 13 years already, and, since then not a thing was done there so you may know how it looks.

DO NOT send me any money because I don't drive and I'm not paying anybody for doing this cleaning. It was difficult when my husband was living. Send your money to: Alvin Jurena Route 4, Box 171 Schulenburg, Texas 78956 He is doing all that hiring and paying out for the work.

Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday afternoon, October 8th.

Our sympathy is extended to the family of Otto "Tobe" Green. Mr. Green, of the Cyclone community, died in October and will be missed by all of us in the community. Mr. Green was the father of Joann Plumlee of Cyclone.

October birthdays for our members were Ruth Psencik (October 1), Veronica Sebek (October 2), David Sebek (October 7), Carl Macek (October 9), Joe Baker (October 15), Ryan Sebek (October 17) and Melanie Zavodny (October 22). Celebrating anniversaries this month are Eugene and Dorothy Haisler (October 2), Barbara and Robert Macek (October 3), Ryan and Stacey Sebek (October 24). Best wishes for very happy days to all these members.

The Rules and Regulations Committee proposals for 1990 were presented by Louise Zavodny. We will vote on changes that the membership feels necessary at our November meeting.

PLEASE NOTE: The SPJST is going to Las Vegas January 22 - 25, 1990 (Monday - Thursday). The trip will be from Austin to Las Vegas and return. Previous issues of the Vestnik have mentioned this trip. If you are interested in going on this trip, please sign up by November 5th. Total cost for air fare and hotel is $192.00 per person. A $50 deposit is required at the time of signing up and the balance of $142.00 is due by November 15th.

Contact the Supreme Lodge if you are interested in going on this trip.

Our lodge will be making a donation to the Bell County Welfare for Christmas. We will have a box here at the hall on the second Sunday, December 10 when we have our Christmas Party for you to make your contributions. Canned goods, non perishable foods and toys that are in good condition are requested. Share your blessings with someone who is not as fortunate as you.

Congratulations to Arleen Tschoerner and LaVerne Cabla who won with their kolache at the District II meeting at Lodge 47. Nice going, ladies!

Dear Members: A brief synopsis of the monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jona g held Sunday, October 1st. In the absence of lodge secretary, Sister Helen Kehler who had to work, Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner, the lodge FAC, read the minutes of the previous meeting and recorded this meeting. The meeting was short and all reports were disposed of quickly. With a needed quorum PLUS present, two motions were made and passed to take care of lodge business.

There were two members reported on the sick list this month, namely, Sister Cecilia Valigura was in a Houston hospital with a serious heart problem. At this writing, her status is still unknown. Sister Lillie Nezval is now home from the Bellaire Hospital after a five - day stay. Her condition is improving after a bout with a combination of things including a weak heart.

Brother Albert Lupik, AGAIN, won the door prize, in an honest draw.

A fraternal hour with luncheon was held after the business meeting.

Brothers Lupik and A.J. Kelner furnished some of the extras to add to the items furnished by the lodge along with something from Sister Kortis.

Sister Nezval sent some items even though she just came home from the hospital.

The November monthly meeting will be held on Sunday, the 5th at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. Along with the regular items, the agenda will haN e a report on the District VI meeting and fraternal gathering as well as a couple of other reports.

After the business meeting adjourns, the luncheon and fraternal hour will begin.

This writer, as well as all delegates, received a ballot from the Supreme Lodge in Temple. The issue is the recreational facility. It is possible that many delegates may think the issue is not important enough to vote on but it is. All delegates must remember that their duties as delegates did not cease at the last pounding of the gavel in the 1988 convention. Their job as delegates continues until new delegates are voted in, they transfer to another lodge.and/or (God forbid) their passing from this earth. Now to the QUESTION. First, we must remember this question has been brought up twice before. It was introduced in the 1980 convention and AGAIN in the 1984 convention. Both times it was "flushed down the drain" by the powers that be at the time. The motion made in this last convention (1988) was hastily put together and there were no provisions made to allow for a fund to be formed. It simply states: "Purchase land to build an SPJST recreational facility." PERIOD!! The provisions were not built in like they should have been so the project could be saved and could be done. Now, the delegates who will vote "NO" will kill the project until the next convention. AGAIN, it will be brought up, hastily, with almost the same wording and, AGAIN, it will be defeated. This cycle will continue until everyone gets worn out and nothing will be done. This will all happen.because of wording. It has been learned that Woodmen of the World (WOW) has five (5) such facilities in Texas alone and plans to build more here soon. This project is a good one and should be passed but our main problem is that many of the delegates, FOR the project, think our

Wednesday, November 1, 1989--VESTNiK/5 organization has "PILES AND PILES" of money and can just reach into that "MAGICAL COOKIE JAR IN THE SKY" and pull a half a million dollars out of it for the whole project. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE!!!

If we want to get out of this rut, save the project and do something good for the members of the organization and the future of the SPJST, WE, THE DELEGATES MUST DO IT NOW WITH THIS VOTE. Vote "YES" to the question at hand BUT ADD the following reservation and/or stipulation ON THE BALLOT. RESERVATION AND/OR STIPULATION Due to the fact that the amount of money, needed for this project, may not and/or is not available at this time, we (the delegates) ask the members of the Supreme Lodge to set up a Special Fund for this project by name, placing an appropriate amount of money that may be available into fund and placing it (the fund) under interest. Also, that this fund be left open for deposit (only) so that additional funds could be added not only by the Supreme Lodge, but by any generous member and/or lodge wishing to do so.

On yet another subject: In the October 18th issue of the Vestnik, a letter about a work party at the Czech National Ceremony, some "Gremlin" got into the machinery and a line was missed either on this writer's copy or when it was set up. So to make things clear it should have read: "In the case of bad weather the alternate date will be etc." Our apology for the "Gremlin" Snafu." By the way, the work party was a success. Those who were there worked very hard to get things cleaned up with the exception of this writer who helped where he could.

No. 35, Elk

We're running a little behind so we have two meetings to report this time.

The September meeting was held September 10, 1989. It was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz with the lodge being led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The October meeting was held October 8, 1989 being called to order

by President Henry Breitkreutz while the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jason Pipes.'

During both meetings, the minutes were read by Sister Donna Adler and approved as read.

There was a moment of silence observed for deceased members Angela Pechacek, Robert Vicha and Bobby Vicha. This was a tragic loss for their family and our heartfelt sympathy goes to all of them.

We are thinking of you, Cotton, and we hope you make a speedy recovery.

We were sorry to hear Edna Tepe has been ill, but we saw her at the dance last Saturday night and it was good to have her back.

Our September birthdays were R.B. and Roger Easter. Our only October birthday was Kimberly Shaver.

The youth club has been busy. They rode in the Westfest Parade on September 2nd. There was a pizza party afterwards and, I'm sure it is safe to say all the kids had a great time.

Their fund - raiser for the month of September was selling the sandwich plates to the Trail Riders who came

through the area September 30th.

There was a Halloween Party on October 22 at 5 p.m. with a haunted house and supper which was a lot of fun. We are happy to report we have two new youth club members, Rhonda Reesing and R.B. Easter.

There will be a Christmas Party during our December meeting which will be on December 10th. We sure would like to see everyone there including those we haven't seen in a while.

No. 40, El Campo-Hillje Meeting Lodge

The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, October 16, 1989, following the games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order asking 1st Vice President Bennie Reck to lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed remembering our deceased members.

Secretary Leona Macha called roll of officers. All officers were present.

The minutes of our previous meeting held on September 19, 1989 were read and approved.

Our members heard the financial report from Treasurer Madeline Shimek. A copy of the complete report is on file and subject to audit.

Correspondence read was a grateful acknowledgment of memorial gift to SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Joe Mican and Joe Zalman, Sr. and a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar with reference to coordinated group tours for our members -- Las Vegas selected for the first tour -January 22nd through January 25, 1990. Some of our members are making arrangements for the tour.

Our members selected the date of Sunday, December 3rd for the election and installation of 1990 officers and Christmas social; meeting to begin at 11 a.m. A full catered meal to be served at noon, members are to bring desserts. Call in your reservation by Saturday, November 18 (Phone 543 4865).

A discussion was held regarding the District VI social to be held on Sunday, October 29 at El Campo Hillje SPJST Hall starting at 11 a.m.

Members are asked to bring two (2) prizes for the 'Wheel of Fortune."

A motion by Madeline Shimek, seconded by Floyd Shimek, to donate a $20 door prize for the social.

Wednesday, October 25th was set as cleanup day and decorating for the District VI social at 5:30 p.m.

The members approved a contribution of two (2) $50 Savings Bonds to Adult Area Center for their fund raising program.

President Vanek appointed the trustees to audit records for our lodge and also appointed the Nominating Committee consisting of Bennie Reck (chairman), Donna Munoz and James Bacak.

Bids are being taken by the Building Committee to replace the front and foyer doors.

Reports were heard from officers.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on their activities, especially about a most enjoyable field trip to Renais' Festival at Plantersville, Texas.

BBQ Benefit And Auction.

A fund - raiser to benefit three families will be held in St. Joseph's Parish in Rowena, Texas on Sunday, November 19, 1989.

The money will be used to help defray medical expenses.

One of the recipients of this benefit will be Susan Urbanek Bohnenberger.

Until her illness, she was District IV youth counselor who had served in this position for the past three years.

Dear Members: Our meeting held October 15, 1989 at 2:30 p.m. was called to order by President Mary Alice Langlotz.

The flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Alicia Neslony. The Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto were led by Ashley Locke.

The members stood in a moment of silence in respect for deceased member, Toby Matula, Sr. Roll call of officers by Sister Jewel Warhol revealed that all were present. except Sister Bonnie Pruitt, Sister Gladys Yates and Sister Dorothy Shilling.

Sister Leona Nors read the minutes of the September meeting. They were approved as read.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from the Toby Matula, Sr. family and Johnny Munich family.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting were read and approved.

The Entertainment Committee will not serve any food at our November 19th meeting; on that day, there will be election of officers and committees.

The meeting will start at 2 p.m., so please mark your calendar.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the fraternal activities report. At District III meeting in Ennis the volleyball tournament results were: In spiking -- first, Lodge 154 and second, Lodge 135.

In non - spiking -- Team No. I from Lodge 66 and Team No. II also of Lodge 66 placed second.

The "Fraternalist of the Year" of Lodge 66 is Brother Emil Hanus.

Sister Libby Parma reported for the Trust Fund Committee; the fund had

received a donation in memory of Toby Matula, Sr. from SPJST. The youth club report was given by Patti Neslony. There were 16 members and 7 adults present. This month's social will be a Halloween Party and a cake walk. They have a two - mile highway area to clean as a project.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a Resolution of Sympathy for Brother Toby Matula, Sr. Sister Darlene Engelke gave her quarterly report of the Lodge 66 funds and social fund. Sister Mary Alice Langlotz reported that the kitchen crew will quit on October 28th and she asked if anyone would want to have the kitchen at the Saturday night dances to contact her.

At our Family Social Night. in October we had 35 present; our next Family Social Night will be Monday, November 13 at 7 p.m.

Lodge 84 is sponsoring a GOULASH SUPPER on November 7, 1989 beginning at 6:45 p.m., with proceeds going toward the support of the Czech Language Chair Fund and the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund which are projects chosen by the Supreme Lodge to receive our support.

Those of you who are old enough may remember that the Battleship Texas played a big part in World War II and is now in need of vital repairs to carry on its historical importance to the State of Texas and those who served on her. The Czech Language Chair Fund is a project which should be dear to the hearts of all who share the Czech heritage because it will provide a Czech Language Chair to a university in Texas, which will match funds to establish a permanent department to teach the Czech Language at that university.

We hope that all lodge members will come and bring their friends for this time of fun, fellowship and good food while providing funds for these two worthy projects.

The cost of the supper is $3 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 and will consist of homemade goulash, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Of course, if you would like to contribute additional money toward these funds, you are most welcome to do so.

Scholarship Program For Lodge Pokrok

Lodge No. 139, Danbury

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship shall be awarded to a freshman year student in an accredited college or university.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE. Applicants must be members of Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 for a period of two consecutive years prior to filing their application. Application may be made during the high school senior year, and will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school or its equivalent. Only one scholarship may be awarded to an individual through this program.

SELECTION. Scholarship recipients shall be selected by a committee of judges from sources outside the lodge. This committee shall be appointed by the Lodge Scholarship Committee. Judging shall be based on applicant's personal statement, grade average, lodge participation, and the committee's judgment of the applicant's potential.

The October 11 meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order and members recited the SPJST Motto.

After the minutes were read and reports given, Sales Representatives Lorenda Baldwin and Helen Filipp gave an account of the insurance training class they attended in Needville.

Young Wesley Baldwin was recognized for his excellent performance of Showmanship in the Pee Wee class at the Brazoria County Fair. Along with a first place blue ribbon, Wesley was awarded a silver buckle for his ability. He is the son of Monte and Linda Baldwin and grandson of Diana Shepard and D.C. Atkins and David and Lorenda Baldwin; his great - grandparents are Edna Baldwin and Tommie Lostak.

A motion was made and passed for the lodge to once again make a gift of a Christmas turkey to all Lodge 139 members over the age of 70. Tommie Lostak was appointed to purchase and deliver the turkeys to the eligible recipients.

A social was held after the meeting adjourned.

nice attendance. After the business meeting, a nice surprise guest who Alice Prasatik and Laverne Hejl went to pick up was Miss Ludma Kopecky.

She is a sister to our late beloved member, Mrs. Lillie Kopecky Hejl, who died a year ago. Ludma is enjoying good health in her advanced age, and although now minus her guitar, she sang countless songs verse after verse from memory that she sang with her family and during her years as a member of the University of Texas Czech Club where she was a regular performer with her guitar. She sang old songs that I have never heard before. Dr. Svatava Jakubson, former professor of Czech language at UT and still a consultant, was present and absolutely amazed (as we all were) that Ludma could remember so many Czech songs. They also sang together.

Thanks, Ludma, for entertaining us in a heritage way! She is a registered nurse and was on staff at the University of Texas Health Clinic for many years. She is a sister to the late Dr. Jos. Kopecky, a heart specialist in San Antonio.

Refreshments were served after the business meeting by Alice Prasatik and co - hostesses Faye Mares, Dr. Jakubson, Mina Sponberg and Doris Boriski.

Dear Members and Friends: I didn't realize it was time for election of officers for 1990, so be sure and attend on Sunday, November 12 at 3 p.m.

The officers from the Metroplex lodges will be installed at the Lodges' Christmas Party on Sunday, December 3rd. Watch for their times. Let's all plan on attending and try out their new dance floor. I heard it was great, this is Lodge No. 183, Arlington.

I don't know how many calls I have received this morning with so many members with this bug going around, including myself. I hope it isn't more than the 24 - hour type.

On the good news side, we are all thankful for the safety of Brother Kirk Stoeppelman who was held with a machine gun at his neck during the robbery of Steak and Ale where his boss was shot to death. They did get the three robbers. Take good care, Kirk. We are all with you.

We extend our sincere sympathy to all the family of Brother Edwin Paul Janecka who passed away Thursday, October 12th. May he rest in eternal peace.

President Bill Hutka called the members of Lodge No. 177, Academy to order at 7:25 p.m. Bill took this opportunity to thank the lodge for the flowers, food and visits in his time of need.

Kathy Fritz was named to fill out the secretary's term for this year.

Libbie Bartek sent get well cards to Juanita Ramm, Jesse Castillo and Vernie May, a sympathy card to Bill Hutka and family, and a floral arrangement to the Sharon Hutka services.

Minutes from the August meeting were given by Bill Hutka and a thank you card was received from Dr. John Hutka.

New members were accepted into the lodge, those being Madeline and Ronald Strawn and David Cook.

The trustees' meeting report was given by Josie Tomastik; Mary Ann Summers was absent. They discussed letting Academy High School have the lodge facilities for their Junior and Senior Prom in 1990.

A motion and discussion followed on a monetary support gift to Juanita Ramm and Cecil Lagrange since we are a caring lodge and tend to help our own. A check was delivered to these members by Pat and Jerry Tomastik.

A donation of $100 each was made to the Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock Show, and the Temple Elks Foundation for crippled children.

Also, a $500 scholarship was made in the name of Sharon Kaye Hutka.

At this time a Nominating Committee was announced consisting of J.C. Johnson, Teresa Baca and

Libbie Bartek were named to it.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m. for coffee and cake.

Lodge No. 180, Burleson Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Grochoske beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a minute of silence for departed members of our Society.

Roll call and reading of minutes, with minutes being approved as read.

President Grochoske thanked all who worked so faithfully for a job well done.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ernest Kelly suggested that everyone bring three cans of food to the next meeting, which will be given to a needy organization with other donations.

It was voted to let the band members have ice to put in their ice chests.

An inventory was,taken of the chairs the lodge has and came up with a total of 923.

Congratulations to Julia Dueser, who was elected "Fraternalist of the Year" from our lodge.

It was voted to put pipe around the lodge to keep the public from trespassing on the property. Ben Jack Welch volunteered to do the job.

Our sincere sympathy to Estelle Hurtik and all her family Estelle's brother, Justin Sulak, passed away October 13, 1989. May he rest in peace.

We were glad Louis and Mydell Grochoske had a good time on their trip to the Virgin Islands, West Indies, St. Croix and Caracas, Venezuela, San Juan, Porto Rico and others. They also cruised on the ship Carla Costa and had a Czech band from Czechoslovakia to dance to. They were with a group of 12 from Fort Worth.

They really had a ball.

Next meeting is November 7 and will be election of 1990 officers. The Nominating Committee will have a slate of nominees. If anyone wishes they can nominate others from the floor.

Let us all come and vote and also plan a better year in 1990. No matter how good it is there's always room for improvement, so let's all work together as good fraternalists should.

Members of Lodge No. 185 gathered at the Bavarian Village at 6 p.m. on October 19 as guests of the youth of our lodge who, along with their leader, had planned a Halloween Party. Most of us came masked as requested. After refreshments, judging of masks and games planned by the young folks, the adults met inside the restaurant for our meeting.

President Dwight Doeppenschmidt called the meeting to order.

Derek Koehler led our group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read. All correspondence was read.

Wednesday, November 1, 1989—VESTNIK/7 The officers for 1990 were elected by acclamation.

Plans were made for our Christmas Party on December 28 at the Bavarian Village beginning at 6 p.m.

Youth Leader Theresa Haag gave her report.

Ernest Jasek reminded all of us about the District VII meeting in Floresville on October 22nd.

Our president's name was drawn for the attendance prize after which the meeting adjourned.

Dear Members and Friends: The meeting on October 4 was held at the National Hall on the last minute due to a conflict in dates.

Jo Prochaska called the meeting to order at 10:15 a.m.; she welcomed the guests, Mary Cecile Krivanek, Anna Leshikar, Anna Marie Moncrief and Linda Horner; along with 32 members, the pledge to the flag was recited.

Secretary Merel Kovar read the minutes and they were approved after a minor correction. The treasurer's report by Lydia Alholm was also approved.

Jo thanked Joyce Tesar for letting them use the National Hall.

A motion was made and passed to give the hall a donation and also to Joyce, because most everyone knows Joyce and she is already ready to help when she can. God bless you!

Anna Johnson reported Mary Pavey was sick in bed. A beautiful get well card was signed by all and sent to her.

A thank you note was read from Al and Alene Kercho thanking us for mentioning their Heritage Day, which was a big success. Also thank you from the Huegley Hospital for our donations. Elma Anderson announced the Huegley Hospital will have a tree lighting ceremony in Burleson on December 11th.

Billie Starr completed Thanksgiving dinner plans and organized the menu.

The dinner will be Wednesday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m.; adults, $4; children not at home, $2; members no charge.

"Happy Birthday" to Louise Oujesky, Frank Tesar, Irene Green, Roberta Peters, Bessie Brezina, Ima Lou La Plant and Ezra Walker. May you all have many more.

Then all of us settled down to be entertained for an hour with the Fantagels, 23 of them playing different odd instruments. The singing and dancing were also enjoyed. (I was sorry I had to miss it; still hearing raves.)

After the blessing, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and games.

Maria Prill was the door prize winner. She and daughter, Eva Dockery, arrived from a 3 - week stay in Germany in time for the meeting.

They had a wonderful time.

Josephine Prochaska and husband Frank, along with their daughter and husband, Bill Marely and Frank and Merel Kovar (all our members), left on October 14 for a 7 - day cruise on Italian cruise ship their Octoberfest that had musicians from Czechoslovakia. They visited in Curacao, Netherlands, Antilles Caracas, Venezuela, Grenada, West Indies, Montonque, French West Indies, San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas Virgin Islands. I heard they arrived home safely Saturday night

(October 21) and had a wonderful the United States, has already received time.

I notice in such important national Roy Alholm is visiting his brother publications as The Washington Post, and family in Ryderwood, Washington and has been described as "the definite for 2 weeks. The Czech Heritage Society will have a state meeting along with the Fayette County Chapter's Genealogy workshop.

The works in this exhibition have been drawn from international collections, with unprecedented loans from the National Gallery of Prague, the Moravian Gallery of Brno, the Czechoslovak Film Archive, the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague, and numerous regional Czech museums and private collections.

After the Houston premiere of Czech Moderism: 1900 - 1945, portions of the exhibition will travel to New York City: photography will be seen at the International Center of Photography, film and film posters at the Anthology Film Archives, and paintings, sculpture, and works on paper will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum. The photography portion will then be exhibited at the Akron Art Museum in Ohio.

SVPS Chapter No. 9, Fort Worth Dear Members: Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association will have a meeting on November 5 at 2 p.m. which will be held at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road.

The usual order of business will be conducted with the officers giving their reports. Also there will be election of officers, so all of you be sure to come and cast your vote.

After the meeting, a meal prepared by some of our members will be served. The ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the rest of the meal and they are always delicious.

Remember that there will be three drawings of $25 each to three members in attendance; anyone of you could b,!. one of the lucky ones this time.

Recently we lost, a friend, George Anders. He was a very pleasant person to be with and always had a smile for everyone. He and his wife, Elsie, went to all the polka dances at our lodge halls and loved to sing the Czech songs with the bands. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family in the loss of their loved one.

Marie and Frank Tesar celebrated their 50th anniversary recently and were honored by their children with a reception and dance on October 15 at the National Hall. Many of their friends and family helped them celebrate. The hall was beautifully decorated and the food was delicious.

The Mynarcik Band played for the dance and everyone had a good time.

We wish Marie and Frank many more happy years together.

At this time of the year, there are so many activities going on, but we hope you will find time to attend this meeting so don't forget. See you then.

Helene Pfeil Ackermann. Their great grandmother, Helene Ackermann, recently celebrated her 95th birthday.

Devin and Derek's mother, Diana, was born in Karnes City. Diana's father was Leroy Busch and her mother is Alice Yarbrough Busch.

Diana has one older brother, Howard, and one older sister, Linda.

Devin and Derek's maternal grandparents were the children of Otto and O'Lena Olsen Busch and John and Olga Crawford Yarbrough.

Diana teaches school and Dennis is self - employed. They are all members of Lodge No. 185. Derek and Devin are active in the Youth Club and Scouting. Last year they represented SPJST at the Youth Spectacular for the Texas Fraternal Congress by singing a song. The Koehler family enjoys the many activities sponsored by the SPJST Youth Clubs and the Scouting program.

Derek is in the third grade and Devin is in the sixth.

Honors Grandparents On September 10, 1989, the New Tabor SPJST Youth Club honored their grandparents on National Seventeen Day. Grandparent's grandparents, four great Alexis Johnson presents certificates to grandparents and our three honorary grandparents and Great - grandma grandparents were in attendance. The Vajdak. youth read poems that expressed their love and appreciation to their grandparents. Each youth then presented their grandparents with a certificate.

Lodge 9 Snook Youth Holds Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: The Texas Fraternal Congress Convention (TFC) was held in DeSoto on October 20, 21, and 22. I was honored to represent the SPJST as State Queen and to MC the Youth Spectacular, along with State King Bryan Becan. The entertainment this year was great. Lenice Kaspar, of our lodge wowed the audience with her tap dance to "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Great job, Lenice!

The awards for the scrapbook and poster competitions were presented after the Youth Spectacular. There were numerous entries from across the state for the judges to choose from.

I'm proud to saythat Lodge 30, Taiton was awarded third place in both poster and scrapbook.

In closing I want to say, it was a great weekend. I looked rorward to seeing the friends I've made in the SPJST and I think we all enjoyed ourselves. Thanks Mom and Dad for all your support!

Representing the SPJST at the Westfest, and the Fraternal Fest was also a lot of fun. SPJST State Queen was a goal I set for myself years ago and I encourage each of you to set goals for yourself in life. Be the BEST that you can be -- 'Enjoy life! This is not a dress rehearsal."

Lodge 30 Taiton Youth Entertained Before Large Audiences Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton, Lodge 30, SPJST Youth Club spent a day of traveling and entertaining on Saturday, October 14th.

On the agenda for the first part of the day, the youth were invited and performed at the Czech - Moravian Celebration in Rosenbergbeing held at the Knights of Columbus Park Grounds.

Our Taiton Youth Club performed at 11 :30 Saturday morning. Assistant Youth Leader Karen Kaspar emceed the youth's program of entertainment.

First was our first place State Junior Beseda group performing the Ceska Beseda. Craig Dornak, Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dorotík, Valerie Roye, Michael Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotík, Curtis Dorotik and Sarah Dluhos did a wonderful job.

Jennifer Dluhos, Marcy Dorotik and Stephanie Roye, our 1987 first place State Andrew Sisters pantomine, presented "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to everyone's enjoyment.

Leniee Kaspar then performed her first place State Individual winning tap dance routine to the American favorite "Yankee Doodle Dandy."

Jennifer, Marcy and Stephanie then returned for a second Andrew Sisters' number to pantomine "Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar." To conclude the program Jeanine Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar and Valerie Roye presented a clogging trio dance number to the fiddle tune favorite "Orange Blossom Special."

The youth then enjoyed visiting the various craft and food booths set up around the grounds.

Parents attending were Wanda Dorotik, Anita Roye, Leroy and Karen Kaspar.

For the second part of the day, October 14th, the Taiton Youth Club traveled to Hallettsville where they were invited to perform at the Lavaca County Fair.

The crowd watching grew larger and larger as the youth performed each of their numbers -- which added to the delight and enjoyment of the youth of the Taiton SPJST Youth Club.

Youth and parents spent the afternoon and evening at various places around the Lavaca County Fair.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, express our sincere sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother JOHN J. TOUPAL, who passed away Monday evening, April 17, 1989 in Olin E. Teague Veterans Hospital in Temple following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services for Brother John J. Toupal, 77, of 709 South Banks, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 20 in Phillips - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Msgr. Emilian Foltyn of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Caldwell.

Born April 12, 1912 at Ennis, Texas, he later moved to Caldwell. He was the son of the late John B. Toupal and Ludmila Kubelka Toupal. He attended Caldwell Public Schools finishing his education at several colleges in Texas.

Known throughout Texas as a colorful statesman, public servant and honest benefactor of the' people as well as a steward pillar in the Democratic Party, he served Burleson County faithfully for 44 years as County Clerk during which time his, office became known as one of the most efficient, accessible clerks' offices in the State of

12/VESTNIK-Wednesday, November 1, 1989 Texas. His honesty, personal advice and courtesies superceded his many other attributes.

The most fitting attribute that can be conveyed upon him at this time is that he was "First in War, First in Peace and First in the hearts of his countrymen." The outstanding colorful career as a statesman and gentleman will long live in the minds of the people of Burleson County and the State of Texas.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army with the 51st Infantry, 4th Armored Division, 3rd Army. He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged on October 22, 1945. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 4458 and the American Legion Post No. 455 of Caldwell.

He is survived by one brother, Joe Toupal of Caldwell; two sisters, Liddie A. Toupal of Caldwell and Olga Marie Justice of San Antonio; one nephew, M.D. Sangarten; one grandnephew and one grandniece, all of Brockport, New York.

Serving as pallbearers were members of VFW Post 4458, Caldwell: Albert Matus, George Vance, Daniel Piwonka, Joe Bartek, Herman Constable, Curtis Pillow, Robert Siptak and Herman Gaskamp.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were members of VFW, American Legion Post and Somerville VFW and American Legion.

Arrangements were by Phillips Luckey Funeral Home.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, express our sympathy to the bereaved family of brother JULIUS E. KNESEK, 77, a longtime resident of Lyons, Texas, who died Friday morning, April 21, 1989, in a Brenham hospital.

Brother Knesek was born February 16, 1912 in Lyons, Texas and was the son of Edmund John and Frances Anna Vykukal Knesek. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat. He managed the Western Auto Store in Somerville for 25 years and also farmed and ranched.

He married Lydia Bernice Kuchera on May 21, 1934, in Dime Box. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lydia on September 1, 1988, and his grandson, Anthony Knesek.

Brother Knesek is survived by two sons, Julius E., Jr. and his wife, Georgia Knesek of El Campo; John and his wife, Marian Knesek of Denton; two sisters, Molly Ries of Caldwell, Milady L. Kristof of Caldwell; six grandchildren; one great - grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A wake service was held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Funeral Service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat with Msgr. Boli Zientek officiating. Interment followed in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Frenstat.

Active pallbearers were Louis Zelenovity, Eugene Chmelar, Bobby

Schoppe, E.R. "Bubba" Schoppe, S.D. Vavra and Leroy Calvin.

Resolution Committee Fannie Luksa Mary Fritcher Wilton Chaloupka

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 133, wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of HILDEGARD BALVIN. She was born January 20, 1907 and died May 24, 1989.

Miss Balvin came to this country from Germany with her mother. She lived with her mother and dedicated herself to helping her mother.

She became a member of SPJST in 1934.

She lived with her sister until about a year before her death.

Hildegard Balvin was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church in San Antonio, Texas and was buried in San Fernando Cemetery.

She is survived by her sister, Elsie Summers and two nieces who live in California.

May she rest in peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 186, Caldwell on behalf of our entire membership, express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother CHARLES KRISTOF, JR., who died Sunday morning, May 28, 1989, in Bayshore Medical Center Hospital in Pasadena, Texas following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services for Brother Kristof, Jr., 84, of Houston were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, May 31 in Phillips Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Alvis Coleman, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment was in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery.

Born March 8, 1905, in Burleson County, son of the late Charles Kristof, Sr., and Lydia Dusek Kristof, he grew up in Burleson County in the San Antonio Prairie community and attended San Antonio Prairie School.

He farmed while in Burleson County and moved to Houston in 1939. He worked for Houston Lighting and Power Company as a millwright, retiring in 1970. He moved to Splendora, Texas in 1971 and back to Houston in 1986. He was a resident of Houston for 34 years. He attended the United Pentecostal Church.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Alice Heinke in August 1946 and Pearl Duewall in August 1976.

Survivors include one son, Harold C. Kristof; daughter - in - law, Harriet Kristof of Houston; two stepsons, Delmas Heinke of. Houston and Floyd Heinke Caldwell; two brothers, Joe Kristof of Caldwell and Laddie Kristof of Tenaha; four sisters, Liddie Kovar and Millie Whaley of Caldwell; Viasta

Brower of Houston and Helen Telg of Bryan; also six grandchildren.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 18 in Elgin, Texas wish to express our sincere sympathy and comfort on behalf of our entire membership to the family of our departed member EMMA A. HAISLER, who passed away Monday, October 2, 1989, in the Johns Community Hospital in Taylor.

Mrs. Haisler was born April 1, 1911 in the Richland community to the late Henry W. and Emma (Sakewitz) Steger. She had been employed as a practical nurse for 12 years with the Travis State School, in Austin. until her retirement. For the past 41 years, she had lived in the Coupland area and was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, the SPJST Lodge, and Hermann Sons lodge.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Thursday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Coupland. with Rev. Jewel Johnson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie Haisler of Coupland; a daughter and her husband, Delores and James McCullough of Garland; a son and his wife, Charles A. and Eileen Haisler of Manor; three grandchildren, Ryan McCullough, Chad McCullough and Aaron Kuehner..

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth and our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother EMIL PAUL JANECKA, who died Thursday, October 12, 1989, at Gulf Coast Medical Center following an extended illness.

Brother Janecka was born October 22, 1918 in Cistern, Texas to Julius and Alma Kunchik Janecka.

He was a resident of Wharton, Texas since 1982 and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. A veteran of World War II, Brother Janecka worked as an operator with Schlumberger for 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of Lodge No. 154 since 1947.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Benton Thurmond officiating. Cremation followed.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Janecka of Wharton; two daughters, Brenda Kalinec of Pasadena and Norma Sue Rankin of Corpus Christi; his mother, Frances Miller of San Antonio; three sisters, Wilma Steil of Fort Worth, Doris Tucker of San Antonio and Lois West of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three brothers, Julius F.

Janecka, Jr. of Decateur, Lawrence Janecka of Eastland and Charlie Janecka of Fort Worth and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

The family requests memorials be made in his name to the donor's favorite charity.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother TOBY MATULA, SR., of Penelope, Texas who died Tuesday, October 3, 1989, at the age of 63 years.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 5th in the Catholic Church of the Nativity in Penelope.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday at 9 a.m. in the Church of the Nativity. Burial took place in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Brother Matula is survived by his wife, Dorothy Matula of Penelope, Texas; one daughter, Susie Hejl of Abbott; one son, Toby Matula, Jr. of Penelope; one brother, Rudolf Matula of Hubbard; two sisters, Katherine Gallia of Penelope and Bessie Rejcek of West and five grandchildren.

Brother Toby was recently named Hill County's Conservation Farmer of 1989. He served in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the Air Force Reserve Corp, a KJT member, a VFW member of Post 4819 in West, and an SPJST Lodge 66 member since July 1972.

Features A Soldier Who Had Faith This is a story of a man's sacrifice during World War II. S/Sgt. Frank Valentich, of the Second Infantry Division, was killed September 9, 1944 at Frontven, France on the main road from Guipavas to Brest, France.

Frank joined the Second Infantry Division as a replacement in July 1944.

He was just like any other rifleman who had to prove himself in combat.

As the division moved across the hedgerows of Normandy, he proved himself many times, as a rifleman, assistant squad leader and then sqiiad leader. Many times, when the situation was static, word would come from headquarters that a Holy Mass would be held in the rear, and you were allowed a few men to go.

This man, when he was a private, asked that others be allowed to attend, if the requests to go exceeded the quotas. He said that he came from a very religious family and that he had been an altar boy all through his younger life.

Wednesday, November 1, 1989—VESTNiK/13 He mentioned that he didn't feel that he would come out alive but, of course, in a situation such as that, he was always told to think positively. He said that he knew if he died that a priest would be with him, because he attended many first Friday masses in his life. (He said that he was always taught if you attended mass and communion on 9 first Fridays that, if you died, a priest would be with you to give you the last rites.)

In September, after moving out of Normandy, France and becoming a part of a task force, clearing the Peninsula of Germans, the division moved back to Frontven, ready to start the assault on the City of Brest. In this position there was little action only for the patrols being sent to the front.

Finally, the orders came that the division was to attack toward Kernvarch. As the unit moved forward, the many houses in the village were checked quickly. Sgt. Frank Valentich crossed the road and moved up a sunken road.

He proceeded forward to the fork in the road when a machine gun opened fire. The machine gun was dug in through the hedgerow.

Sgt. Frank Valentich was wounded.

While the rest of the squad gave supporting fire, the medics were able to pull him back. Sgt. Valentich was brought back into the first floor of a house which was on the highway.

The medics gave him blood plasma and did whatever they could to help him, but the bullet hit his artery high up on his thigh, and there was no way to stop the bleeding.

Suddenly, in the corner of the room, a trap door in the floor started opening. Of course, all weapons in the room were pointed to that direction.

When the trap door was opened, a hand came waving, then a head with a beret on top. It was then noticed a white collar of a priest, a second priest was with him. He was asked if he could speak English and was told that Frank Valentich was a Catholic and was dying. They understood and both knelt by the stretcher, when the medics said that he was dead; not only was there one priest when he died, but there were two. The house was used by the traveling priests to commute between villages.

There are many such stories to tell about our American soldiers and their faith in God. Many times a person is asked what is combat all about. That question is not easy to answer, but to believe as a Christian is very helpful.

With Veterans Day coming up, let us all remember the many Frank Valentichs who are not with us in your prayers, and in your own way remember them.

SPJST Society Emphasizes Family, Service

by Maggie Sieger -Our. SPJST Society received some very nice publicity recently in Temple Daily Telegram Saturday, October 21st. We congratulate SL Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska for submitting sensible publicity. The article is listed below: Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas leaders from Temple will attend the Texas Fraternal Congress in DeSoto this weekend, along with other fraternal society leaders from throughout the state.

"The Congress is a forum - type of meeting for the different fraternal societies to discuss approaches to

improvements in the system," said Leonard Mikeska, secretary - treasurer of the Temple SPJST and a TFC board member. "It's an excellent chance for leaders of various benevolent societies to exchange ideas and discuss programs that they find meet the needs of people in their areas."

Over 650,000 people in the state belong to TFC societies, Mikeska said.

"The conference is basically for leaders, but anyone is welcome," he said. "It's usually held in the area where the president of the congress is located. It should come to Temple in a couple of years.

The SPJST, a Texas - only society, was founded in 1897 to help Czech immigrants adjust to life in the United States. Charter lodges are still operating in Buckholts and Cyclone and originally, people had to be of Czech heritage to join. The Temple lodge became the home office for the organization in the early 1950s.

"It was a form of cultural support," Mikeska said. "Those original needs the SPJST served no longer exist.

Now, we focus on the needs of today, like protecting the family and drug abuse."

SPJST has many family - oriented programs which offer families a chance to spend constructive time together.

"We're very sensitive to ways of preserving the family and we come up with entertainment, community and charitable programs for people of all ages," Mikeska said. "We have family nights, youth programs to teach leadership and how to get along with other teens, summer camps. Recently, we had a program on child abuse prevention."

The TFC offers leaders the opportunity to address these contemporary problems by supplying a large pool of information from which leaders can draw ideas, Mikeska said.

Another service the SPJST provides is an Early American museum in the basement of the SPJST office in Temple. The lodge has been collecting clothing, tools, dolls and just about everything else, including an advertising pencil collection with over 70,000 pencils, since before 1970. The museum also sends out various displays to community festivals across the state.

"I call it Early American with a Czech flavor," Mikeska said. "If you're a school - aged child in Temple, you've probably been through the museum." ***

East Bernard Hosts Czechoslovak Ambassador To The United States In late September, Rudy Klecka, SPJST Lodge 28 member, received a phone call from the First Secretary of Czech Embassy Mr. Vladimir Husak in Washington, D.C. Aware of Mr. Klecka's experience over a 25 - year period in conducting tours to Czechoslovakia, the first secretary made a personal request for his assistance in arranging hospitality among some ordinary American citizens for the Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Miroslav Houstecky. Mr. Houstecky would be making a special trip to Houston to be oresent for the opening of a major art exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, "Czech Modernism: 1900 -

1945," something he had personally helped to arrange over a period of 2 or 3 years.

Rudy Klecka's response and that of his wife, Henrietta, was that of the true Texas - Czech "Welcome!" But, why, not, suggested Rudy, experience some Texas "good old boys" deep in the Czech heart of Texas: East Bernard in Wharton County. And so it was that Wharton County was host to the Czechoslovak Ambassador to the United States on Saturday, October 7, in the home of Rudy and Henrietta.

About 60 persons representing East Bernard, El Campo, Rosenberg, Bay City, Cuero, Sealy, Schulenburg and Victoria and, of course, Houston, had the opportunity to visit with the Ambassador and his wife, Maria, and the First Secretary Mr. Husak. Even the University of Texas was represented with the presence of Mr. Woody Smith, professor of Slavic Languages.

Although personal conversations are not open to news releases, most ranged generally from mutual interests in Czech heritage in Texas, concern over current events in the eastern block nations, especially since the West German Embassy in Prague has served as a major "haven" for those seeking asylum in the West, and the Czech arts themselves.

During the course of the evening, Mr. Houstecky took the opportunity to address those gathered for about 20 minutes. He expressed his great pleasure at having the opportunity to visit Czech communities throughout the United States, including Wisconsin, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

"For us, at least, the best moments in the United States as diplomats are visiting among the people, as we are this evening," he shared. He also referred to his recent meeting with the Foreign Minister of Czechoslovakia and Secretary State Jim Baker as being "very constructive, with very positive, though small steps, toward definite change in the relationship between our two countries." He went on to remark that "never was there even one moment of a confrontational spirit."

He expressed the caution with which the Czech government is approaching such stps toward change, because of their desire to avoid any "destabilization" in Eastern Europe or unemployment in Czechoslovakia.

(At this moment, there is no such thing as unemployment there.) Severe debt in Hungary, shortages of food, and inflation in others, are problems that the Czech government does not want to invite in the name of "glasnost" or "peristroika."

The Ambassador also referred with obvious approval to the United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia, Shirley Temple Black -- "Shirlinka" as she has always been known to the Czech people through her films. Even

though some appointed ambassado-s take 2 weeks for approval or are even rejected, Mrs. Black was approved within days, unanimously. She and her husband have worked hard to learn Czech history, language and have taken a great interest in Czech culture, working hard to bring about an exchange between the two countries.

The Ambassador himself, having been appointed to the United States just over 3 years ago from ambassadorship in London, expressed his pleasure at serving in Washington, D.C., a beautiful city...but not America." He saw his visit to East Bernard as a welcome opportunity to enjoy "the real thing."

On Sunday, October 8, Mr. and Mrs. Klecka accompanied Ambassador and Mrs. Houstecky and First Secretary Husak to San Antonio where they were welcomed to the city

by Mayor Lila Cockrell and the representatives of the Czech Heritage and Educational Association of San Antonio. The Klecka party also enjoyed a tour of the San Antonio River Walk area. On Monday, they were received by Mayor Cockrell at the top of the Frost Building for breakfast, then taken to the Institute of Texan Cultures in Hemisfair Plaza.

The World's Fair Association entertained them for lunch at which Ambassador Houstecky was the main speaker. From San Antonio, the Ambassador's party flew to Dallas where he was welcomed and entertained by members of the Czech community there.

The Czech Modernism exhibit is being hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston at 1001 Bissonet from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. through Saturday; Thursday to 9:00 p.m.; Sundays from 12:15 to 6:00 p.m.

General admission is $2.00.

Thursday's admission is free.
