From The President's Office Dear Members: The Supreme Lodge Board has authorized that the Home Office will coordinate tours (group tours) for its members.

Las Vegas has been selected for the first tour. This tour will be from January 22 through January 25, 1990.

SPJST Czech Fest Enjoyed By Members And Guests

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek presents a check for $1,000 to Woody Smith, Department of Slavic Languages at the University of Texas in Austin.

Mr. Smith reported that there are 15 first - year students at UT studying the Czech language and 11 second - year students. There is a steady increase of students for the past 3 years.

Last summer five students attended in Prague, University Charles studying; also Czechoslovakia representatives from Charles University will be visiting UT in November to make arrangements for exchange students.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek recently presented a check for $800 to Marvin R. Felder, Temple Junior College president.

State Volleyball Tournament

SPJST The SPJST Supreme Lodge officers, directors, employees and all SPJST members would like to thank all of the performers and workers who devoted their portion of time and talent to the SPJST Fraternal Fest.

Performances included youth and adult Beseda circles, Czech singing and dancing, accordian music, the state youth talent winners and gymnastic exhibitions. All of the performances were really spectacular.

The publicity we received during and before the fest from the TV stations and newspapers was a great plus for the SPJST. This publicity reminded the public that we are interested in perserving our heritage and also having good family fun.

The Parade of Costumes and all the costumes of our performers were beautiful. The museum, the youth and insurance had booth displays which attracted much attention during the festivities. We feel that a lot of interest was generated by these booths.

At the close of the program, we had a polka and waltz contest and had more entries than were expected. We are happy that our members are still interested in the polka and waltz dancing. Public dancing rounded out the afternoon and everyone went home tired, but with a sense of satisfaction from the fraternal fellowship enjoyed.

The State Volleyball Tournament will again be held at the City Recreation Gym at 102 West Elm Street in Temple, just one block southwest of the Supreme Lodge Office on Saturday, November 4, 1989.

Registration for the tournament will be from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. with the first games beginning at 10 a.m.

This year we have two categories; "A" category is spiking and the "B" category is NON - spiking. We have entries in both categories for the State Playoffs.

There will be first, second and third place trophies awarded in each category, plus the first place lodge will receive $50, second place Lodge -- $40, and third place lodge -- $30, in each category.

Temple Junior College is in the process of purchasing a computer and Czech language software so that interested individuals can learn the Czech language through independent study.

Czech classes are also available to interested students.

Temple Junior College is a charter member of TOCA (Texans of Czech Ancestry).

The competition will be stiff and if you would like to watch your lodge or district in these playoffs, you are welcome and there is no charge. The competition in the "A" category often gets fierce.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, October 8, 1989 at the City Park with Vice President Gaye Galetka presiding in absence of President Annie Vahalik.

Minutes to the last meeting were read by Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy. Correspondence followed.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky read her usual report and gave the financial report from Family Day.

Co - Youth Leader Evelyn Holy gave a short report.

The District VI meeting to be held Sunday, October 29 was discussed.

Several members are planning to attend.

It was announced that election of officers will be held at the next meeting; also October, November and December birthdays will be honored and a birthday cake given away.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report and meeting was adjourned.

Winner of the door prize was August Neuhauer.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 12 at Mr. Gatti's, beginning at 2 p.m. as usual. Election of officers will be held and October, November and December birthdays will be honored.

Dear Members and Readers: Hello!

Sunday, October 1, at 1 p.m., was our regular monthly lodge meeting.

Tammi Dobecka was called upon by the president to lead the pledge to the flag and SPJST Motto, with all members standing during the recitation.

Next, was the reading of the minutes of our last meeting by Barbara Hykel.

Following were reports of all the other officers. All reports were approved as given.

The youth leader reported on her youth club activities and she told us who attended District III meeting at Ennis on September 24th. They were Willie Mae Schuetz, Peggy, Kevin and Tammi Dobecka, Lydia and Robert

Dobecka. We also were told that a second place winner in the cake contest from our lodge was Lydia Dobecka.

Congratulations!

Get well cards were sent to Ronnie Kroll, Sid Pokladnik, Eddie Hykel, Mrs. Alvin Sembera, and L.B. Dobecka who is at the West Rest Haven at this time. A sympathy card was sent to the Vernon Wood family.

Robert Dobecka read a thank you letter from Westfest organization, Tours Bazaar Society, and from the Supreme Lodge about the Fraternalist of the Year.

At this time, the president expressed his thanks to all of those who cooked and prepared the good food (barbecue with all the trimmings) to be served for our appreciation supper for all our lodge workers and their families on this same day of the meeting. Thanks to the others who brought sweets.

The attendance was good, all enjoying the day affair -- playing games and visiting.

The next event will be a Halloween Party for all the youth and adult members on Friday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. Wear your costume if you wish; who knows, you may be a winner in the best, ugliest and spookiest costume. The youth club and parents, usually, donate cakes to the West Rest Haven for their monthly birthday parties.

Next month, November 1, at 2 p.m., will be a special one -- a member of our lodge, namely, Aunt Katie Krizan will be celebrating her 95th birthday with the rest of the residents at the West Rest Haven; her real day is November 23, born in 1894 and she is our SPJST member since 1915. We wish her the best in years to come.

We also have another member at the West Rest Haven, at this time; his name is Ludvik B. Dobecka, born August 16, 1902. He is our member since 1960. We wish him good health and many years to stay. Mr. L.B. Dobecka is Robert Dobecka's father.

RVOS Lodge No. 46 held their quarterly meeting on Sunday, October 15 at our lodge beginning at 3 p.m.

After the business meeting was election of officers and all the same ones were elected by acclamation.

Delegates elected are Herbert Brem, Raymond Hromadka, Mike Mazanec and Edwin Nors. Substitutes are Raymond Marek and Ted Kocian.

After the election, a delicious barbecue supper was served with the usual trimmings, with a variety of sweets brought by the members. Food and refreshments were provided by the organization.

Our next Board of Trustees' meeting will be held Friday, November 3 at 7 p.m. and the lodge meeting is set for Friday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Come and help us decide on the date for our Christmas Party and election of officers in December.

The time came for a door prize; at this meeting George Straten's name was drawn, and he was present.

Present progressive prizes' names drawn were: 1st -- Louise McKenny (for $10), 2nd -- Paula D. Gerik ($10), 3rd -- Richard Mynar ($7); none were present.

Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, October 8, 1989 at 4 p.m.

President Melvin Steger presided at the meeting and Nikki Rieger, Tammy Machu and Lorie Faltesek presented the flag and led our members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We, then, had roll call of officers.

The minutes*of our previous meeting were read and the treasurer's report plus property reports were also given.

We had one new member, namely, Dustin Kruse.

Bobby Wuensche reported that the Tarok Tournament was a real good turnout and also named the winners.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported that 33 members were present at their meeting and they will have a "lock - in" on October 20th. Their Tom Watts' sales were real good. The youth club presented a pot plant to Jim and Margaret Haliburton, managers of our hall downstairs who will not be able to manage our hall anymore.

Our Christmas Party was discussed and it will be held on the first Sunday, December 3rd, with a covered dish supper.

The next lodge meeting will be held Sunday, November 12, with election of officers, so mark your calendar for that date. See you then!

Lodge No. 81 Needville The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81, Needville, was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 10, 1989 with 16 members attending. We were happy to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brdecka of Needville as our guests.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order and Sister Mary Matcek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

All officers were present for roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the September meeting and also the minutes of a special meeting held on October 2, 1989. Both sets of minutes were approved as read.

Correspondence included thank you letters from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville and the Fort Bend County unit of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Also read by the secretary was a letter from the Women's Center of Fort Bend County and an invitation to attend the Czech Heritage Festival at the Rosenberg Knights of Columbus Hall on October 14th.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's financial report was accepted as read.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel presented his report consisting of the calendar of events scheduled for the month of October, followed by details of the various activities covered by the Special Fund. His report was accepted as read.

One new member, Vincent Joe Newman of Fairchilds, was accepted into membership of Lodge No. 81.

Welcome to Vincent Joe! There was no old business on the agenda.

Under new business, it was decided to resume the usual daytime schedule of monthly meetings during the fall and winter months, therefore, our next regular meeting will be held on Sunday, November 12, 1989, at 12:00 noon with a meal being served. The lodge will furnish roast beef and members will bring a covered dish consisting of a vegetable or dessert.

Following the good food and fellowship, the business meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The November meeting will be very important; new officers for the coming year 1990 will be elected. Please mark your calendar and make every effort to be present so you can participate in the democratic process of electing the officers who will lead us in the coming year.

We hope some of our members from the Lake Jackson area will be with us for these daytime meetings.

Discussed also under new business was the granting of a scholarship from Lodge No. 81 to a deserving graduate of Needville High School in June, 1990. No final action was taken on the matter at the present time.

Those of you who are old enough may remember that the Battleship Texas played a big part in World War II and is now in need of vital repairs to carry on its historical importance to the State of Texas and those who served on her. The Czech Language Chair Fund is a project which should be dear to the hearts of all who share the Czech heritage because it will provide a Czech Language Chair to a university in`-Texas, which will match funds to establish a permanent department to teach the Czech Language at that university.

We hope that all lodge members will come and bring their friends for this time of fun, fellowship and good food while providing funds for these two worthy projects.

The cost of the supper is $3 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 and will consist of homemade goulash, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Of course, if you would like to contribute additional money toward these funds, you are most welcome to do so.

88, Houston News On October 7, 1989 Gary Wayne Ermis, the only son of Jerry and Willie Mae Ermis, got married to Sheri Lee Brenner at the Marriott Hotel Chapel.

Sheri Lee is the daughter of Albert Brenner and the late Mrs. Brenner. It was a beautiful wedding with cocktails, dinner and a dance.

Gary is employed at St. Luke's Hospital as an accountant and his wife, Sheri Lee, is employed at Hermann Hospital as an RN in ICU. The Ermises are now on a honeymoon cruise in the Bahamas.

We, at Lodge 88 are congratulating this fine young couple and wish them a long and happy married life.

On October 8, at a Workers' Party, Mrs. Frances Olexa was honored on her 90th birthday. The Central Texas Sounds played "Happy Birthday" for her with a standing ovation.

On October 9, we had our monthly meeting at Lodge 88, with an attendance of 123. Our Secretary Mildred Holeman asked me to write some of the news for her, because she doesn't have enough time and I gladly do that for her.

The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Ermis at 7:30 p.m.

After the flags were presented by our young ladies from the youth club, we stood in silence for two deceased members, Jerry Pavlicek and Frank Dvorak.

After roll call of officers, the secretary read the minutes of our previous monthly meeting and were accepted as read.

The Frank Dvorak family sent a letter of appreciation for the beautiful flowers and other concerns.

President Jerry Ermis announced Czech Day which is October 29, 1989.

Homer Alexander announced, there will be another Defensive Driving Course on October 12 and 13; probably, the last one for this year.

Michelle Linney, daughter of Youth Leader Barbara Linney announced that on October 28, the youth will have a Halloween Party with Lodges 142 and 172 joining in with Lodge 88. This is such a good idea to have these parties in one place with plenty supervision, because it seems everything you do is dangerous, unless precautions are taken. Prevention is better than paying a price later.

Margaret Allbritton announced her next Blue Room Party on December 17, 1989 -- this is a Christmas Party, and get your tickets now as soon as possible because you can't miss this occasion!

Ed Miculka spoke for the Men's Club. They are very busy men all the time; that is, most of them are. The big project underway is the drawing. At first, Ed said, it was cash prizes only, and now different individuals have given them a bunch more big prizes. I encourage all of you to buy some tickets at such a reasonable price.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann reported for the board. There are so many things to take care of, which the board is responsible for. He also mentioned that he had some requests asking to ban smoking in our lodge, or have a non - smoking section.

(Personal Comment: "These things are easier said than done.") Karl said so far they haven't come up with a solution, but will give this some serious thought. There's always room for improvement.

Choral Group President Gene Barcak reported for the ever - busy Choral Group. I've never seen a group

more dedicated than our Choral Group and always willing to perform, whenever they are asked to. Tim, keep up the good work with your group.

Czech Concert Orchestra Secretary Kathy Jolly gave her report about Czech Day that they will perform from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. They are always willing to play. Director V. Kovanda has gone back to Czechoslovakia to make his home there. The new director is George Krejci.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox thanked his committee for taking the dances and getting great help; he stated that with everyone's support we should have a great 1989. He also announced the BIG DAY -- 24th Annual Czech Day on Sunday, October 29, with the Vrazels playing. (Note: If you purchase a $4 dinner ticket you may dance free; otherwise it's $2 per person. This is a good deal, isn't it?)

Czech Professor Bill Souchek always has a very humorous part in our meeting -- he breaks the monotony with his anecdotes. This time it was a very serious, but interesting approach.

He brought forth the Cechoslovensky Svet, a monthly periodical. The "Czech World" of August 1989 with an issue, an article on page 5, which he had translated into English, so everyone in Texas could understand it.

The article is as follows: "One of the countrymen, who is an example for all, is personally known as Tim Kostom of Houston. He was born in Prague. Today he is 85 years of age and continues to assist our organization in Houston, Texas and environs. For decades he acted as an amateur in Hlahol Club. He has acted in about 300 plays.

Tim Kostom was president of Hlahol for many years, president of Lodge Pokrok and, at present, still directs a 35 - member Choral Group.

There is no movement in Texas in which he isn't prepared to take part.

For all of his noteworthy work in the organizations and for his devotion to the SPJST, he was selected for the highest honor of brotherly service. For

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship shall be awarded to a freshman year student in an accredited college or university.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE. Applicants must be members of Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 for a period of two consecutive years prior to filing their application. Application may be made during the high school senior year, and will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school or its equivalent. Only one scholarship may be awarded to an individual through this program.

SELECTION. Scholarship recipients shall be selected by a committee of judges from sources outside the lodge. This committee shall be appointed by the Lodge Scholarship Committee. Judging shall be based on applicant's personal statement, grade average, lodge participation, and the committee's judgment of the applicant's potential.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship 'offered by Lodge Pokrok No. 88 shall consist of one $500 amount during each calendar year.

APPLICATION DUE DATE AND REQUIRED INFORMATION. The official rquired information from each applicant shall be as follows: a. The application blank provided. b. Applicant's personal statement. c. A transcript of high school grades. d. Proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university. _ e. Membership in Lodge No. 88 for two years.

The application blank must be submitted by December 31st. After receipt of the application, detailed instructions will be provided to each applicant, giving filing requirements of the balance of the information.

PAYMENT OF AWARDS. The scholarship shall be awarded directly to the college or university in which the recipient is enrolled.

Dear Members and Friends: Each month many of us look forward to our fraternal lodge to have our regular meetings. These meetings are held regularly to help keep our

Czech heritage as it has been kept for us by our parents. These meetings are always interesting and someone always has some good ideas on how to keep attending them.

There are things such as to improve the building and to have something for the members to enjoy.

Now, comes the end of October which is Halloween and that brings out something for the youth. The costumes are something to see; they scare you and one tries to figure out who may be under the disguise.

There will be a dance on Sunday, October 29 with music by The Rejcek Band from 3 to 7 p.m. There will also be a cake decorating contest for the best Halloween decoration and costume prizes for the youth and adults. Cakes that will be in the contest will later be entered in the cake walk.

(Some cakes in the past have been decorated nicely and were very tasty.)

Be sure to bring out the youngsters to the dance because this will be mostly for them.

Before long it will be time for Thanksgiving and lots of things will start happening; also next month, November 12, will be election of officers at our lodge. The fraternalist for 1989 will be announced. The reason for our election of officers at the November meeting is: that the four Metroplex lodges have a Christmas Party where there is lots of fun and plenty of food, also a dance will be held on that day. There will be more written about the party. This Christmas Party will be hosted by Lodge 183 in Arlington, Texas for Lodges 92, 154 180 and 183 members only.

But first, don't forget the dance on October 29 at Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

The meeting was well attended and our treasurer and chairperson of Heritage Day celebration gave nice reports on the money that was made.

They thanked everyone who helped make the day a wonderful success.

We have three couples who had or will have anniversaries this month, namely, Brother Rudolph and Sister Millie Wruble will be married 55 years.

Rudolph and Millie are both natives of Fort Worth. Rudy lived on the south side of town near old All Saints Hospital where his mother and father worked. He met Millie Haba who lived on the north side. They met at the old lodge hall on North Houston Street near the packing houses. They married at a young age, but have had a good life together. Rudy moved to the north side and started working at the packing house; he worked there until they closed the meat packing houses. Rudy and Millie have made a few trips to Czechoslovakia; Millie has some relatives there. (Rudolph had surgery on his hip several times and now has to use crutches, but that doesn't cause them to stay at home. Millie also has been a good nurse to him through these surgeries.) They were blessed with a son and daughter. Rudolph and Millie are a good Czech couple and attend lodge meetings as well as other meetings; they also belong, to Ladies' Circle. The lodge wishes them many more years of happy married life as well as their many, many friends do, also.

Brother John and Sister Mary Motl are able to celebrate their 53 years of married life. They don't look old enough for the number of years. Mary Motl is the former Mary Bartek who was born and lived near Temple, Texas until they were married. They were married in a church at Cyclone, Texas.

John and Mary started farming there but, after a few years, they decided to

move to Fort Worth to work on the ranch owned by Past District Attorney Jessie Martin. They continued to work there until the death of Mr. Martin.

John started working as a welder. For a short time, they lived in East Texas at the Lone Star Pipe Company. They lived in the Fort Worth area for several years. They had two sons; one son passed way a few years ago. John had his 75th birthday on October 20, 1989.

As most of the way of life, when we get older aches and pains start but we hope their pains will be small; so to you, John and Mary, happy 53rd wedding anniversary to you from all members of our lodge and your many friends.

Frank and Marie Tesar celebrated 50 years of married life and a great party was held Sunday, October 15th. Both Frank and Marie have done lots of work for our Lodge 92. I don't have too much history of their life, but they were married near Shiner, Texas and came to Fort Worth before World War II. Frank worked at the G.D. Aircraft Plant and retired a few years ago.

Marie has yet to retire, she has to cook and take care of the house; that is the case of ladies who are housewives, no retirement for them! Marie took care of the children. Both of them have been fortunate to have a healthy life.

They had two sons and one daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Frank and Marie Tesar: the members of Lodge 92 and your many friends of other lodges wish both of you the happiest 50th and many more years together.

Sunshine Person Martha Durham sent birthday cards to members over 65 years of age; sixteen of them had birthdays in October, she also sent get well cards. I understand those who

receive cards appreciate them and are thankful that the lodge members didn't forget about them.

Sister Liz Howard is a lucky gal because she was one of the 293 named who won in a "lotto drawing" among the 16,937 players which was in the Illinois State Lottery. Liz, too bad that you were not the only one to win because that would have been $13 million but, as it was, you only received $63 after having to share with others.

The next lodge meeting on November 12 is also election time. The officers who will be elected at that meeting will be initiated at the four lodge Christmas Party in Arlington, Texas.

Lodge No. 142 Houston On Sunday, October 8, 1989 at 2 p.m., our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 42 members, 5 visitors and 15 children present, who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and Board of Trustee members; all were present except Vice President Gus Florian. President Dennis Hermis appointed Nelson Jochen to take the vice president's chair for this meeting.

The secretary read the minutes from our previous month's meeting which stood approved as read.

Under correspondence, the secretary then read a letter from Supreme Lodge regarding a trip to Las Vegas sponsored by the SPJST and available for members. More details to be published in the Vestnik.

Financial secretary - treasurer's report was read by Sidon Tumis.

Rosie Schilhab read the Board of Trustee and bar reports.

Youth Club report was given by Amanda Hermis.

New members are Jennifer Brogdon, Agnes Fabacher, Gregg Urban and Stephanie Powell; all of these were signed up by Sales

Visitors recognized and welcomed to our meeting were Joe Gambil, Mrs. Jo Ann Buri, Josephine Buri, Sam and Elizabeth Urban and Fred Kopecky.

Congratulations to Sidon Tumis who was elected Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 142; he is most qualified and deserving of this title.

Other committees were then appointed.

Birthday celebrants for October are Lillian Schmidt (October 6, 82 years); Jo Ann Buri (October 4) and Rozzanne Marquez (October 7).

Wedding anniversaries observed in October are for Ruth and Howard Kieschnick (October 6, 43 years); Rita and Henry Hermis (October 24, 40 years).

The $100 capsule drawing went unclaimed due to the absence of Thomas Kubeczka and Alan R. Barnes. Two consolation prizes of $5 each went to Howard Kieschnick and Pat Schleider . The youngest prize of $5 went to 11 - year - old Gregg Urban.

Other door prize recipients were W.J. Schmidt, Alice Jochen, Rozzanne Marquez and Adela Stein.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, November 12 at 2 p.m.

Refreshments and a delicious' lunch were enjoyed by all present. Thank you and come join us next month.

News

Dear SPJST Members: We would like to invite all SPJST members and their guests to the third annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival to be held at Lodge 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena on November 4th and 5th.

All details have been completed.

On Saturday, November 4th, the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society will conduct a meeting and interesting program beginning at 5 p.m.; no charge for this meeting and everyone is invited at 7:30 p.m. The Frydek Hot Czechs, a group of young entertainters, will put on a show you will enjoy very much. Dance music begins at 9 p.m. by Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen, also a polka - waltz contest at 10 p.m. with music continuing until 1 a.m. The cost of dance is $4 person. To enter the contest, it is not necessary to have a Czech costume.

On Sunday, November 5th, a full day of Czech activities begins at 10 a.m. and closes at 8:30 p.m.; good Czech foods of roast beef, sausage, sauerkraut, kolache and other Czech pastries, good Czech entertainment with Lodge 88 Choral Group, Czech Heritage Accordian Band, and Galveston County Czech Heritage Singers. Also good music by the Charles Mikeska and the "Sensations" band of Temple, plus Henry Repka and polka and waltz music until 8:30 p.m. will end a fun - filled day.

There will be a complete listing of the program in next week's Vestnik.

Please make plans to attend, all indoors, so come out, rain or shine.

We'll have lots of parking space with security and plenty of air conditioning in case of hot weather; Texas beer at 50 cents a 12 - ounce cup or 75 cents a can, country store with many beautiful arts and crafts, and many colorful Czech (kroje) or costumes.

Information on locating your family heritage and also mini - museum will be on hand.

A reminder to all Lodge 172 and Czech Heritage members: Bring your kolache, other pastries, arts and crafts for country store Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.

Lodge

Lodge 179 met for their monthly meeting on October 12, 1989 at 8 p.m. in the Warrenton Guest Room with President Harold Bergmann presiding.

Financial Secretary Arnold Peters gave his report, followed by Treasurer Lee Leonhardt's report. All reports were approved as read.

In new business, it was approved to change our meeting time to 7 p.m.

The Food Committee advised for the November meeting for Thanksgiving we will have turkey with members bringing side dishes.

Also, next month is our annual meeting where election of officers will be held. The meeting was adjourned.

Our next month's meeting will be November 9 at 7 p.m. with a turkey meal. Happy Thanksgiving!

88 Houston Birthday Club News Lodge

The meeting of the Birthday Club Sisters was called to order at 11:20 a.m. by President Kathy Trefell. The roll was called and then Kathy read a beautiful message "Smiles Are Free."

The minutes were read by Pearl Hanka in the absence of Secretary Rosalee Kostom, and they were approved as read with a minor correction. Pearl also read correspondence from the Dvorak family written by Mrs. Elsie Kadera thanking the sisters for the dinner they served after the funeral service.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report for September, 1989.

President Kathy then asked the sisters about our special dinner at Wyatt's Cafeteria. There were no complaints -34 ladies attended and all who were able to be there had a good time.

Our Card Lady Evelyn Mikolas reported sending two sympathy cards to Mrs. Frances Dvorak and Mrs. Frances Olexa.

Lillie Spies reported that she has six crews scheduled for Czech Day to work in the pastry booth on October 29, so she's hoping that a lot of pastry will be brought by our sisters and also members of the lodge.

Della Kadlecek, a birthday club member for many years, had the misfortune of falling and breaking her hip. She's in therapy nearly all day, but can have company from 4 to 9 p.m., however, she was scheduled to come home Saturday, October 14th.

One of our fine dedicated Birthday Club Sisters, Edna Froehlich, has moved to Cuero on October 14th. She promised to visit us and wants to remain a member. We will really miss you, Edna.

Willie Mae Ermis spoke for the men who spend so much time cleaning the hall for Thursday night games. She asks that we put all the chairs under the table and discard used paper cups.

So adhere to this because we pay these men by the hour and we need to save.

The November cooks are Bessie Lero, Lowrena Lindemann, Josephine Bishop and Agnes Moers.

Kathy's gift was won by Martha Baxter. Ima Lero presented us with a neck pillow and it was won by Juanita Simons. The Calcutta game was split

by Margaret Spahr and Mary Johnson.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Frances Olexa, Juanita Simons and Mary Kosut.

We adjourned with the blessing.

Heritage Society State Meeting Czech

The Czech Heritage Society will have a state meeting along with the Fayette County Chapter's Genealogy workshop.

DATE: November 11, 1989 TIME: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

PLACE: La Grange SPJST Hall The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. A lunch will be provided at noon for which a fee will be charged.

After lunch the state meeting will begin. The purpose of the state meeting is to elect officers.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6 Cottonwood Has Activities Dear Readers, The youth club meeting was held on October 11, 1989 after the mother lodge meeting. Following the meeting youth and adult members enjoyed playing games.

On September 24 Kevin and Tammi Dobecka, also Sister Peggy Dobecka, Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka and I attended the District III fall meeting at Lodge No. 135 in Ennis, which was well attended.

Kevin Dobecka is District III Youth Club president. They planned a District III trip to Six Flags "Holiday in - the - Park" on Saturday, December 2, 1989. The youth club members are still selling cookbooks so if you need one, please call the leaders or youth member(s).

Lodge 6 Youth Club members and parents went to Six Flags on October 8 and all of them had a good time during the nice weather.

We are working on Halloween items. The Halloween Party will be held Friday, October 27 and we will have hot dogs, goodies and drinks, also games. Everyone is invited, young and old; all of you come and have lots of fun.

The Christmas Party will be held December 3, 1989; lodge meeting at 1 p.m., youth club meeting, 2 p.m.; also social with games, supper, youth club program with Santa Claus' visit and exchange of gifts to follow. Everyone is invited to attend, so come and we need youth members for the Christmas program.

Birthday celebrant in October is Sherri Lenart.

Youth Club members come help us work on Halloween items and Christmas items for the rest home residents.

Snook Lodge 9 Youth Held Reception Dear Readers, We had fun setting up for the Grandparents Reception and mixing the punch. We all assisted in serving the punch. Everyone seemed to enjoy our program that we presented.

We gave a book of "Poems" to our honorary grandmother, Mrs. Ella Jakubik.

Our meeting was held October 4, 1989.

Dear Vestnik Readers, During the month of August, the Lodge 88 Youth Club participated in many adult lodge and youth functions as a group and sometimes on their own.

All throughout the month, they held Thursday night kitchen sales on August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. During the games going on at that time, youth also collect the aluminum cans and the third Thursday, August 17, the Scrapbook Committee consisting of Angela Clayton, Cindy Groendes, Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Lindsey Michalak, Kristy Sokol, Tommie Wallace and Jennifer Welfl, chaired by Crystal Wallace, met for the first time. This is the biggest and most diverse group the Scrapbook Committee has had in 5 years.

Next, the adult lodge held a committee party on August 6, 1989.

This is for anyone who is in the committee book at least 16 years or older. Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl and Crystal Wallace were the three of our youth who attended. There was a catered meal and a dance that followed.

Next, the youth club had their monthly meeting on August 9th. The major items of discussion were our social on August 19 at Malibu Castle Golf, State Royalty and YAD on August 26 and 27; also mentioned the Christmas ornament contest, our district and lodge summer trips, Gold C Coupon sales and plans to camp with District VII again next year.

On August 13, six of our youth club members, Angela Clayton, Lillian Clayton, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace and Tommie Wallace visited many of their friends from District VI at the District VI YAD. Two years in a row, District V camped with all of these wonderful people. All of the Lodge 88 youth members enjoyed their YAD very much, and hope District VI will come out next year to see District V YAD. On August 14, District V Queen Crystal Wallace was presented to the Lodge 88 membership at their monthly meeting by DYC Marie Stayton.

Crystal then spoke to the membership about her thoughts on being chosen as District V Queen. Her duchess is Melissa Havemann.

On August 19, the youth club held their monthly social at Castle Malibu Golf. Some of the things there were to do are putt - putt golf, video games and bumper boats.

The highlight of the month was August 26 and 27 -- State Royalty and YAD. At the royalty competition, Crystal Wallace competed for queen with her Duchess Melissa Havemann.

From Lodge 142, Keith Kieschnick ran for king with Duke Nicholas Havemann of Lodge 88. Keith was named first runner - up king, and Nicholas was first runner - up duke.

There was a dinner and dance following.

State YAD had many Lodge 88 talent competition. In Individual Talent, Kristy Sokol (10 - 12), Melissa Havemann (13 - 14), and Crystal Wallace (15 - 17) participated. In Group Talent, Crystal Wallace and Cindy Groendes competed in the Senior Division. Darlene Migl was the District V Merit Point Scholarship winner. Brian Havemann won first place on 15 - 17 Handicraft, Darren Havemann won second place in 6 - 9 Hobby Kits. Darlene Migl won third place in 15 - 17 Science and Education.

August was a great month and the Lodge 88 youth are looking forward to what the rest of the year 1989 has to offer.

66 Waco Youth Prepare For Halloween Lodge

Our last youth club meeting was held October 15, 1989.

We will have our Halloween and hayride on October 29 at 3 p.m. at Linden Hall. Everyone bring your own drinks and bring what you signed up for during our meeting.

A cake walk will be held during our Saturday night dance, October 28th.

We will also make our Thanksgiving craft for the Moody Rest Home on this Saturday. Everyone should be there at 8;30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 25, 1989—VESTNiK/11 week of October 22 - 29, 1989. On our ribbons we wrote "DRUG FREE." We planned to attend the Volleyball Tournament at the Youth Rally and participate in the Halloween Harvest Festival at the Snook Brethren Fellowship Hall on October 31 at 6 p.m.

We planned to make red ribbons for the Senior Citizens activities. Plan to attend our next monthly meeting on November 1 at 6:30 p.m.

13 Dime Box Monthly Youth Meeting

Lodge Making red ribbons to be worn on WEAR RED DAY on Wednesday, October 25, 1989 are Casey Kovar, Cory Kovar, Ashley Victorick, Becky See, Katy Kovar, Candace Macik, Dwayne Macik, Amy Gaas, Randy See and Jason Gaas.

Assisting are Karen Macik and Marie Schoeneman. We also plan to distribute red ribbons to homes in our neighborhood and encourage citizens in our community to become involved and help decorate their mail boxes, car antennas, and doors with red ribbons. We also plan to decorate for the Senior Citizens Activity with red ribbons and distribute red ribbons to the senior citizens.

Lodge 9 Snook Youth Hear Speakers Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was very well attended. Thanks to Mr. Dennis Gaas and Randy See for presenting us with two programs. I learned from these programs and hope to use them when going deer hunting.

We also made red ribbons and plan to wear these on 'WEAR RED DAY" on Wednesday, October 23, 1989 in our participation of the TEXAS RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN against the illegal use of drugs. We also will distribute red ribbons to homes in our community to promote DRUG ALCOHOL free lifestyles.

We also plan to assist in the community - wide HARVEST FESTIVAL to be held on October 31, 1989 at the Snook Brethren Fellowship Hall starting at 6 p.m.

Our next monthly meeting will be November 1 at 6:30 p.m; do come and bring a friend.

88 Houston Youth Hold Meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 88 Youth Club had another informative - packed meeting on October 4, 1989.

The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. by President Darlene Migl.

Angela Clayton led us in the pledge and then we stood for a moment of silent tribute. Members kept standing so we could recite the SPJST Pledge and sang the SPJST Fraternity Song.

The register was read and there were 13 members present and 5 adults; one was introduced -- Christina Caballero, age 15, and she attends Hamilton High School.

The minutes were read by Secretary Marlene Migl and were approved.

Angela Clayton gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $526.26.

Fund - raising plans for this month are to sell specially made SPJST candy. Our Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported on our candy sales and also the trip to Dallas we want to make next summer.

The after meeting activities were refreshments brought by Nicholas Havemann, which were enjoyed.

Our next youth club meeting will be November 8, 1989 at SPJST Lodge 88, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 13 in Dime Box held their monthly youth club meeting at 3 p.m. on October 15, 1989.

The meeting was called to order by President Susan Spacek.

The fourteen members present then stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Business discussed included a sleepover at the hall on Friday, October 27 after the school carnival.

Each member may invite one friend to the sleepover.

Our local lodge is also selling SPJST candy to raise money. Orders must be turned in to our youth leader, Mrs. Ford, by October 26th. The member who sells the most candy will receive a prize.

The meeting adjourned and the door prize winners were Richard Spacek, Wesley Ford, Darden Hervey, Nicholas Rackel, Wendy Reeves and Aaron Hervey.

Everyone was then treated to a soda water.

—SPJSTMr. Dennis Gaas presented a program to the Snook SPJST Youth Club members, guests and parents on "Safety of Deer Hunting." Mr. Gaas had some good logical tips on deer hunting and use of the different kinds of firearms that are used for deer hunting.

Randall See, Snook Youth Club member, presents a program entitled "Ready, Aim, Safety." It was very informative and had good pointers on how to use a gun properly.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Bila Flora No. 16 wish to express our sympathy, on behalf of our membership, to the bereaved family of our departed sister MRS. LYDIA DUSEK, age 86, who passed away August 19, 1989 in the Stevens Convalescent Home in Hallettsville.

Mrs. Dusek was born in Lavaca County, Texas on March 2, 1903 to the late Martin and Anna Kopecky Trlica.

She married Adolph B. Dusek on July 29,, 1924 in Bila Hora. He died December 9, 1979. She was a member of the Czech - Moravian Brethren Church, Christian Sisters at Vsetin, and member of SPJST Lodge No. 16, Bila Hora.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 21st. The Rev. Henry Beseda officiated.

The body lay in state at Kubena Funeral Home until 12:45 p.m. at which time it was taken to the Vsetin Church for services.

Pallbearers were George Cervenka, Victor Dusek, Jr., George Matejek,

Weldon Trlica, Dennis Woytek and Edwin Vaculik.

She is survived by a sister, Louise Matejek of Hallettsville and several nieces and nephews.

Burial followed in the Vsetin Cemetery.

Besides her husband, Sister Dusek was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers and 12 sisters.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother DANIEL H. LOYKASEK, who passed away on September 6, 1989 at the age of 73.

Survivors include daughter, Carolyn Holub, son - in - law, Henry Holub; four grandsons, Michael, Gregory, Mark and Richard Holub; 2 great grandchildren and one brother, Jerry Loy k asek .

Rosary was recited on Thursday, September 7 at Dudley M. Hughes Buckner Chapel. Christian Burial Mass was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church on September 8th.

Interment was at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 28 at Shillervile Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Garrison officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of McCabe - Carruth Funeral Home of Victoria, Texas.

Mr. Lesikar, a native of Victoria, was born November 30, 1911 to the late Frank G. and Julie Frintis Lesikar.

He was a farmer and a member of the Lutheran Church and SPJST Lodge No. 143.

He is survived by four sisters, Lydia Kabela of Victoria, Olita Schlebach of Port Lavaca, Viola Hanus of El Campo and Annie Hanus of Skidmore; four brothers, Fred H. Lesikar of Wood Hi, Roy R. Lesikar of Victoria, Frank J. Lesikar of Placedo, Ernest A. Lesikar of Shiner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia Koenig and Alma Slavik and a brother, Jessie Lesikar.

Mr. Mesecke was born in Concho County to Richard and Minnie Mesecke. He married the former Vertis Braden in 1955. He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a meat inspector for the Texas Department of Health and a sales representative for the Farmers Mutual Protective Association. He was a member of Sc. Mary's Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Milton Mesecke.

MARY HERMIS, who passed away Wednesday, October 4, 1989 in a local nursing home at the age of 81 years.

She had been a member of Sokol and SPJST. Sister Hermis was preceded in death by her husband, Ludwig Hermis in 1960, also one brother, Adolph Sassin.

Graveside services followed in Seaside Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers were Ronnie Majek, David Wyatt, Dalton Wyatt, Jr., Murry McDonald, Steve Gilly and Stephen Rebecek.

Lewis, C. Jez, Sr., husband, father, and grandfather, was a very quiet, gentle and kind person and a very devoted family man. He enjoyed the visits with his children and grandchildren and was always there for them.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, and a skilled carpenter; he gave of his time and helped with the construction of the lodge home located on Middle Road in Temple, also helped in maintaining the property.

His wife, Vlasta, was always by his side watching over him.

He will be missed by all of us.

SPJST Member Receives Honor A book on local Czechs wins San Antonio Conservation Society Award.

We're Czechs, a book by Dr. Robert L. Skrabanek, has been chosen to receive a 1989 San Antonio Conservation Society Citation. Dr. Skrabanek will be honored at an award ceremony in San Antonio on October 25th.

Skrabanek, who grew up in the Czech community of Snook during the 1920s and 1930s, writes engagingly of kolache and catechisms, labor intensive farm work and benevolent societies, language and polka bands as he tells how these Central European immigrants who settled in Texas strove to preserve their cultural heritage. It was clearly a privilege to be of Czech extraction, Skrabanek writes -- a privilege to be cherished and handed on to the next generation.

Published in 1988 by Texas A&M University Press, We're Czechs is in its second printing. Jane Foster, president

of the San Antonio Conservation Society, has said that the book was recognized as a significant accomplishment in accordance with the Society's purpose "to preserve and to encourage the preservation of historic buildings, objects, places and customs relating to the history of Texas, its natural beauty and all that is admirably distinctive to our state; and by such physical and cultural preservation to keep the history of Texas legible and intact to educate the public, especially the youth of today and tomorrow, with knowledge of our inherited regional values."

A lifetime member of SPJST Lodge No. 9 in Snook, Brother Skrabanek is emeritus professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University and resides in College Station, Texas -- Editor.

Summer Secret Wedding; Was It A Surprise?

Even though there are a couple of weeks of summer yet, this season ends in some areas of the United States right after the Labor Day, the last holiday of this season. It is amazing that in some places such as Chicago even the weather generally cooperates with this theory because it is usually up to ten degrees cooler there right after that last long weekend of the just passed by nostalgic season. (I lived in Chicago for 3 years, 1964 - 67, when transferred there by my employer from Minneapolis, Minnesota.)

Summer, beside being the outdoor season, is a great time for social events and family gatherings including weddings. In the late summer this year an eye - catching event -- a secret marriage -- did take place between two outstanding young Czechs, Paulina Porizkova and Richard Ocasek in the Caribbean. I am enclosing a direct quote from the front section of the Houston Chronicle, page 2, Newsmakers column, on August 30, 1989, called "No secret anymore."

It reads as follows: "Model Paulina Porizkova, famed for her swimsuit appearances in Sports Illustrated, secretly married her longtime beau, Ric Ocasek, lead singer of the Cars, last week at an Anglican church on the Caribbean isle of St. Barthelemy."

By the way: the French isle, St. Barthelemy, with another tiny French island, St. Martini, is located in the group of leeward islands about halfway between our American island, Puerto Rico, and the main French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the windward islands group.

Paulina, as a star model of the giant Estee Lauder cosmetics company, is called a woman with the most beautiful body and cherubic, most photogenic face. Do you remember the 1989 calendars featuring her in a different attire for every month? These calendars were selling like hot cakes and are now very much sought for as collection items.

Ric Ocasek writes modern music from time to time and is a lead singer for the group Cars. Ric's popular musical pieces are "Shake It Up" (Lido Music New York, New York, Warner Brothers Publications 1982, for voice and piano with guitar), "Beatitude" (Lido Music New York, New York -- exclusive selling agent for the United States and Canada -Warner Brothers, Publications 1983, piano, vocal, chords, Rock music, United States) and "Panorama"

(performed by the Cars musical group). Lido Music, piano, vocal, guitars.)

The Cars, where Richard Ocasek is a lead singer, grew from a meeting between Osasek and Benjamin Ort in Cleveland, Ohio. An immediate musical bond was formed and survived relocation to Boston. There they worked as a duo and then began meeting the other musicians who would eventually, in 1976, join them to form Cars. Greg Hawkes, David Robinson (formerly of the original Modern Lovers) and Elliot Easton round out the ensemble and it took but a year for them to become the hottest band in Boston.

Beneath the modernistic surface of the Cars music is an intense romanism which makes theirs a most intriguing blend of the traditional and the new.

Writer Ric Ocasek crafts songs so that human problems are viewed in the unusual ways and the Cars play them to reflect the sounds of the chanting society. Electric and electronic music has become a language for an entire generation of young musicians looking for a new road to travel. Suffice it to say, the Cars were there first.

With demo tapes of their songs already receiving radio play, the Cars went to London, England, to record their album and returned with what eventually proved to be a double platinum LP. "Just What I Needed," "My Best Friend's Girl" and "Good Times Roll" became major chart items and the group and album swept through numerous Best New Artist and Album award rolls for 1978. Since recording the Cars, they released three more exceptional LPs: "Candy - 0," "Panorama" and "Shake It Up." Quite a bit of their music is reproduced on compact discs.

Let us be proud of these two young people of Czech origin and wish them well in their married life!

I hope this short write - up of mine will enhance the ethnic awareness of the Czech - American readers of our SPJST Vestnik.

Hackemack Wedding

Paris -

A. Gene Hackemack and Barbara Huron Paris were married on Sunday, September 24, 1989 at 4 p.m. in a ceremony that took everyone who happened to be at the third anniversary celebration of Hackemack's Hofbrauhaus Restaurant by surprise.

During a break in all of the activities, Judge Karl Micklitz, a longtime friend of Gene, stepped forward out to the crowd and began the wedding ceremony.

The entire ceremony was conducted in German , except for the bride's part.

In the middle of the ceremony, the groom picked his guitar and, while being accompanied by Bavarian Village Band Leader Ed Kadlecek on the accordian, he sang to the bride "Du Du Liegst Mir im Herzen."

During the ceremony, the bride was flanked on her left by her longtime friend, Margaret Mallard of Brenham and, on the groom's right was his brother, Dr. Verne Schmidt of New Braunfels. All parents were also in attendance.

Marlene Kadlecek handed the couple their wedding rings which she had kept in a Bavarian Hofbrauhaus Beer Stein.

The bride wore her Bavarian Dirndl, and the groom wore his Bavarian Lederhosen.

Judge Micklitz was also decked out in his Lederhosen attire.

After the ceremony, the crowd joined the newlyweds dancing to the tune of "My Happiness."

Then a large part of the crowd joined them on a wedding march through the pasture, accompanied by the Bavarian Village Band.

Festivities continued throughout the evening with the "Jagermeister Band" playing inside, while the Bavarian Village Band played outside.

After a brief wedding trip to Round Top and Galveston, the groom returned to his job at NASA, and the bride continues as manager of Hackemack's Hofbrauhaus Restaurant in uptown Frelsburg near New Ulm, Texas.

Heritage Society News

Czech

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas announces the advance sale of tickets to the Third Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival. The festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and 5, 1989 in the SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 facility located at 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas. A full schedule of entertainment is planned for everyone's enjoyment.

Saturday's activities get underway at 5 p.m. with a meeting of the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. The meeting will feature a program under the direction of Joe Janak of Victoria speaking on the history of the early Czech music, orchestras, bands and musical groups in Texas. There will be no charge for this program and the public is cordially invited.

The highlight of Saturday's activities will be a polka and waltz dance starting at 9 p.m., featuring the music of Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen. The Second Annual Gulf Coast championship polka - waltz contest will be held at 10 p.m. during the dance. Prior to the dance, starting at 7:30 p.m. and lasting for about an hour, entertainment will be provided by the Frydek Hot Czechs, a group of young entertainers. The admitting donation to this entertainment and dance is only $4 per person. There is no extra charge for participation in the polka - waltz contest.

The doors will open at 10 a.m. on Sunday for fellowship and browsing through the Czech Heritage Society exhibits and the mini - museum of the SPJST from Temple. Coffee and kolache will be available. A roast beef and sausage dinner with all the trimmings will be served. starting at 11 a.m. The Choral Group, under the direction of Tim Kostom, from SPJST Lodge 88 will entertain from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by music performed by the Czech Heritage Accordion Band of Galveston County.

Formal opening ceremonies and brief statements, including the singing of the U.S. and Czech national anthems by Helen Hegwood, will start at 12:30 p.m. Following the opening ceremonies, entertainment will be provided by the Czech Heritage (Continued on Page 15)

This band is composed of young musicians, mostly of high school and college age. The Parade of Czech Costumes will be held at 3 p.m. during their performance. The festival will conclude with another polka and waltz - dance from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. featuring the music of Henry Repka of Houston.

The cost of Sunday's activities includes an admitting donation of $8 per person which includes the noon meal or $4 per person not including the noon meal. Refreshments and snacks are extra.

Advance tickets may be ordered at slightly reduced costs, $4 for the Saturday night dance, $7.50 for the Sunday noon meal and general admission or $3 for general admission for Sunday's activities only.
