The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives Continuing Education Seminars were held recently in Hallettsville and Hillje.

SFR Jerome J. Hlavaty conducted the seminar assisted by District VI Director Matt S. Vanek. SFM Gene McBride and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote advance insight into the modern types of insurance and how they address SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations such as SPJST is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST does require its agents to take 6 hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

From The President's Office Dear Members: The Supreme Lodge Board has authorized that the Home Office will coordinate tours (group tours) for its members.

Las Vegas has been selected for the first tour. This tour will be from January 22 through January 25, 1990.

SPJST State Volleyball Tournament The State Volleyball Tournament will again be held at the City Recreation Gym at 102 West Elm Street in Temple, just one block southwest of the Supreme Lodge Office on Saturday, November 4, 1989.

Registration for the tournament will be from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. with the first games beginning at 10 a.m.

This year we have two categories; "A" category is spiking and the "B" category is NON - spiking. We have entries in both categories for the State Playoffs.

There will be first, second and third place trophies awarded in each category, plus the first place lodge will receive $50, second place Lodge -- $40, and third place lodge -- $30, in each category.

The competition will be stiff and if you would like to watch your lodge or district in these playoffs, you are welcome and there is no charge. The competition in the "A" category often gets fierce.

We are looking forward to seeing who the winners will be this year. See you there!

Meeting Of District VII

Spring

April 16, 1989 The spring meeting of District VII was held at San Antonio, Lodge No. 133, on April 16, 1989.

The meeting was called to order by District President Monta Foster at 11:40 a.m.

Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag was recited by all present.

Lodge 133 President Brother Trilicek welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Brother 'Netek made a motion that the reading of the previous meeting be dispensed; seconded by Brother Trilicek. Motion carried.

District 2nd Vice President Viola Cabla read the list of deceased members since our last spring meeting.

A moment of silence was observed for departed members.

District Secretary Betty Jurica read the list of 50 - year members.

District 1st Vice President Helen Pavelka introduced all guests.

Then members were appointed to the Audit Committee, namely, Dwayne Doeppenschmidt (chairman), Anthony Trilicek and Jerry Elzner.

Nominating Committee consisted of Billy Pavliska, Frank Veselka and Gladys Jasek.

All district officers responded to the roll call.

District Treasurer Ernest Jasek gave the treasurer's report: YOUTH FUND -- $401.31 GENERAL FUND $375.47

Sister Maxine Pavliska, DYC, stated that our outing will be in the afternoon with youth clubbers and leaders. She introduced the leaders of District VII, also District VII King Donald Marek of Lodge 117 was present. The State Training Class of leaders will be held in La Grange and District VII Leaders' Training on April 22 in Floresville.

This year District VII camp will be combined with District V. The H.E.B. Camp will be held June 25th. (It was cancelled.) Teen (LITs) training is June 3 to 9; District YAD at New Braunfels Lodge 185 hosting on July 16 at the Bavarian Village; State Royalty - August 26 and State YAD August 27. Craft and Talent will be at the Convention Center in Temple.

District V and VII will be camping July 29 to August 1 at Camp Val Verde.

The meeting reconvened at 1:15 p.m.

Brother Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor, stated that it was a pleasure to attend District VII meeting. He stated that the 100th anniversary of the SPJST is only two conventions and one year away. Our biggest challenge is the State Legislation -- the problem is to tax the fraternals, as of now, we are tax exempt. Items are always accepted at the museum.

At this time, Brother Kacir presented $250 for YAD and $800 to General Fund; $1,310.00 to District VII youth.

Czech Fraternal Fest will be held October 1 at Expo Center in Belton.

District VII Director Thelma Hrncir welcomed all to the spring meeting.

District VII got a 9-3/4 refund in the amount of $11,329.89. The officers' workshop was held at Seaton Lodge No. 47 on February 25, 1989, attended

by Jerry Sijansky and Eugene Hrnicr, both of Lodge No. 79. Czech Tapes -2 will be available at cost. Fraternalist of the Year -- State Winner is Tim Kostom of Lodge 88; William Mares of Lodge 133, San Antonio and others in the district. History books of the SPJST are still available and books will be distributed to libraries where an SPJST lodge is located.

New Projects -- Battleship Texas (restore and renovate), Endowed Educational Chair at a major university; the goal is 10 cents per member for each or both and Supreme Lodge will match funds up to $2,500.00. New Brochures -- fraternal activities' reports are due May 1st.

There are 82 lodges on Direct Billing (69) 42,434 certificates. Scholarship winner is Allen R. Klanika of Lodge No. 79 from Taft High School. There were 140 scholarships given at $500.00 each. Workshop for local lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinators will be conducted in each district.

SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest will be October 1, 1989 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton (Central Texas Fair). State Royalty will be held Saturday, August 26, and State Talent and Craft on August 27. The Convention will be held at Victoria June 14 - 18, 1992. Trip for all members planned by SL President Gebala next spring (maybe Due Ranch or Las Ranch or Las Vegas).

Under new business, Dominic Netek made a motion that $50 be donated to the Battleship Texas for renovation and that he will match the donation.

The Czech National Cemetery Association is going to hold a cemetery cleanup day on Saturday, October 21, weather permitting. The starting time will be approximately 9 a.m. with the guiding hand of Mr. E.A. Srubar, the cemetery saxton and vice president of the association directing heavier work.

This date will be Saturday, November 4th at the same time of 9 a.m.

Lodge No. 47 Meets

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The October 8th Lodge 47 meeting was conducted by Vice President Tim Reese due to the absence of President George Pavelka who had knee surgery Wednesday.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. with Flag Bearers James Kortis and Gary Skrabanek bringing in the flags and leading us in the pledge to the flag.

We held a moment of silence to honor the memory of Brother Leslie Mesecke who had been an active member of the lodge for many years, serving as bar chairman and a sales representative. Deepest sympathy to the-survivors and rest in eternal peace to Brother Leslie after the suffering he endured.

Sitting in as the vice president was Brother Lee Roy Hanusch.

Visitors welcomed were Edna Voldan of Lodge 196, Ann Balusek of Lodge 15, Linda Leija, Freddie Schroeder and Jerry (Jaroslav) Merka of Czechoslovakia, a visitor in the home of Sister Albina Mikeska of Temple. We enjoyed having your presence and hope you will be coming for another visit soon.

Those on the sick list during September were Brothers David Pechal, Ernest Junek, Leslie Mesecke (now deceased), Adolph Herzog, George Pavelka, Henry Mares, and Sisters Elaine Zavodny, Rose Marie Orsag, Patricia Mihatsch and Martha Klusacek. Hope everyone is improving daily and those who we may not know about; get well soon!

Sister Martha Klusacek announced that she needs to be informed when a member enters the hospital or has day surgery. When the member is home, is a little late to send the card; call her, or if you can't reach her, call me and I will pass it on to her.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek, secretary, read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives. She also read the minutes of the September 5th meeting and these were approved as read. Correspondence included a thank you card for the wreath of flowers sent to the funeral services of Brother Leslie Mesecke for the memorial in his memory from Sister Vertis and family.

New members accepted were Bobby Lee Zavodny, George Hopkins II and Diana L. Hopkins. Transfers from Lodge No. 24 were Brother Walter and Sister Ella Pomykal, from Lodge 177 was Brother Alan Michael Brown, and from Lodge 48 were Cody E. Leshikar and Ryan Howard Leshikar, sons of Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard and Sister Mary Leshikar. A warm welcome to all those named and hope you become active members of this lodge. We also had two transfers out to Lodge No. 80, Holland, namely, Preston Maddux and Sylvia Ann Maddux.

Acting President Tim Reese reported on the Fraternal Fest held on October 1st (and how much he enjoyed the day although he was there early

and stayed late), the group tour sponsored by Supreme Lodge to Las Vegas, the meeting of the FACs of District II recently; the volleyball tournament at Thrall Sunday, October 15 at 1 p.m.; and the importance of the fraternal log being kept up - to - date by members. The nomination of Sister Martha Klusacek as the "Fraternalist of the Year" from Lodge 47 for 1989 was read by Brother Tim; by unanimous vote, accepted.

CONGRATULATIONS, SISTER MARTHA! Reports of the other officers and chairpersons followed. All reports were satisfactory. The Family Night, the usual third Friday night, was changed to Sunday, October 29th and will be held from 6:30 p.m. until a hayride is over. Everyone is invited and the Halloween theme will be followed same as last year. I hope Sister Koslovsky or Brother Reese will have a letter to inform you better. I only learned of the change of date Sunday at the meeting.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek, District II director, thanked everyone for ine attendance at the District II fall meeting and carnival held on September 24th at Seaton Star Hall, and at the Czech Fraternal Fest at Expo Center on October 1st.

Sister Patsy Koslovsky, who had returned with SYD Claudette Reese from the H.E.B. Camp near San Antonio that afternoon, gave her report. They had 30 members, 4 adults and 4 visitors. Four new members will be Alan Brown, Cody and Ryan Leshikar and Maria Muniga (hope I spelled the name correctly). She also reported on the bike - a - thon held on September 23rd. The local youth club members will be selling SPJST candy, so when your grandchild or youth club member approaches you with this, buy some.

Board minutes by Wallace Jez followed with the special and regular meetings held. Trustees had discussed the Family Social on Sunday, October 29th. He also had a list of the Beseda circles' performances for the FAC. Then SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas was asked to speak to us about the decision of possibly going on direct billing. After some discussion a vote was taken. We will be going to the direct bill and the financial secretary of the lodge Adeline Kohutek and Brother Mikulas will be making the transition. The question of who will be collecting the local dues? The raising of the local dues from 15 cents to 50 cents a month, payable annually, was approved.

The Salary Committee reported that the only change in the prices of officers or chairpersons were in the positions of financial secretary and the English and Czech reporters. There was a recommendation that the, reporters need no compensation (do it free) or have the secretary send in reports. The secretary stated she could send it in in the English language and have the editor translate this report in Czech.

There was a discussion of pros and cons; (I don't think the editor would do this twelve times, maybe a special only.) (Editor's Note: The purpose of a Czech reporter is to have more people writing in the Czech language; this, would defeat the purpose.) that this was to save money for the lodge, but the lodge voted to fill the position at present salary. The collector of local dues will receive $75 per year if we have someone who will do this for the price.

The Rules and Regulations changes for 1990 were read by Brother Woodrow Marek and the changes were

recorded by Sister Judy Pechal, secretary. Some changes were made and these will become effective as of January 1, 1990.

Those celebrating "special" days were (birthdays) Brothers Dan Balusek and Louis Kohutek. Wedding anniversaries this month are for Brother Dan and Sister Ann Balusek, Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek, Brother Wallace and Sister Elsie Jez and Brother Edward and Sister Lucy Mihatsch. Lodge 84 is sponsoring a GOULASH SUPPER on November 7, 1989 beginning at 6:45 p .m., with proceeds going toward the support of the Czech Language Chair Fund and the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund which are projects chosen by the Supreme Lodge to receive our support.

Those of you who are old enough may remember that the Battleship Texas played a big part in World War II and is now in need of vital repairs to carry on its historical importance to the State of Texas and those who served on her. The Czech Language Chair Fund is a project which should be dear to the hearts of all who share the Czech heritage because it will provide a Czech Language Chair to a university in Texas, which will match funds to establish a permanent department to teach the Czech Language at that university.

We hope that all lodge members will come and bring their friends for this time of fun, fellowship and good food while providing funds for these two worthy projects.

The cost of the supper is $3 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 and will consist of homemade goulash, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Of course, if you would like to contribute additional money toward these funds, you are most welcome to do so.

On Sunday, September 24, 1989 Harley and Viola Cox celebrated their 40th anniversary at the SPJST Lodge 88, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with cocktails, dinner and dance with Donnie Wavra furnishing some mixed music, which made everyone of us very happy to be able to celebrate this splendid occasion together. Their children Bonnie Parrott and husband,

6/VESTNEK—Wednesday, October 18, 1989 Bob, their son, Donnie, and wife, Gina (I was told) were responsible for the celebration and, at the end of the evening, the children asked us to go outside and see the gift to Daddy and Mom from the children, curiosity won't hold anyone back, so you can understand the panic -- it was a red pickup truck, so now Harley doesn't want Viola to drive (a joke). The spice of all is their little grandchildren; Katherine Parrott and Cayla Cox, beautiful little children.

Harley and Viola were married in Weimar on September 25, 1949. They joined the SPJST in 1959, and have been active for many years. Harley is chairman of the Entertainment Committee and has been for many years and Viola is secretary of the Board of Trustees.

After a delicious dinner, catered by Renee Catering Service, Irene and Ernie Lewis led a big crowd in the grand march.

We wish you both many more healthy and happy years together.

We'll all be looking forward to the 50th anniversary.

Grandma Hanka had quite a surprise last week, September 23, when her deceased son, Frankie's wife, May, from Virginia visited her twice. I know that was quite a lift for her.

Arnold and I went to Waco, Texas on Friday, September 29 to visit with my grandchildren, Karen, Larry and Shawn Hernandez, and Sunday, we went to the Czech Fraternal Fest in Belton. We had a nice time, enjoyed the super West Czech Folk Dancers, Tim's Lodge 88 Choral Group, who had chartered a bus and performed, also many other groups, and the Sokol Gymnastics put on a good show. My great - grandson, Shawn Hernandez, was asked by the Sokol Gymnasts to perform and accepted immediately. He did rather well for the little training he's had, although, being a football player he works out quite a bit.

We have some good bands coming up on October 21, the Original Texas Dutchmen (polka time); on October 28, the Original Les Blume will play, a DRESS CODE dance and Sunday, October 29 we will have the 24th annual Czech Day with Vrazels playing. The dance will be free if you bought a dinner ticket; otherwise, the dance will cost $2 per person. The Parade of Costumes will be at 5 p.m.

DON'T MISS THIS BIG DAY. It will be a day well spent. Check the Vestnik for the complete program. On November 4, Guy Lombardo Royal Canadians with Al Pierson will play.

Be sure and pick up the blue schedule through December, 1989, because there are many more important dates which you will not want to miss.

UNIVERSAL LIFE: 9% annualized effective through 10-31-89 —SPJST--

Scholarship Program For Lodge Pokrok TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship shall be awarded to a freshman year student in an accredited college or university.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE. Applicants must be members of Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 for a period of two consecutive years prior to filing their application. Application may be made during the high school senior year, and will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school or its equivalent. Only one scholarship may be awarded to an individual through this program.

SELECTION. Scholarship recipients shall be selected by a committee of judges from sources outside the lodge. This committee shall be appointed by the Lodge Scholarship Committee. Judging shall be based on applicant's personal statement, grade average, lodge participation, and the committee's judgment of the applicant's potential.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship offered by Lodge Pokrok No. 88 shall consist of one $500 amount during each calendar year.

APPLICATION DUE DATE AND REQUIRED INFORMATION. The official rquired -information from each applicant shall be as follows: a. The application blank provided. b. Applicant's personal statement. c. A transcript of high school grades. d. Proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university. e. Membership in Lodge No. 88 for two years.

Children In Need -Lodge No. 88 Houston Will Help Yes, there are plenty of young people in need of clothing and shoes at Covenant House Houston.

Let's not forget these homeless in their hour of need.

The Covenant House Houston depends on those like us at No. 88 who so willingly donate their used usable clothing and shoes.

This activity usually has approximately 80 - 100 young people at all times who they clothe, feed and counsel without any assistance from United Way or any other organized funding -- there source of income is from donations from activities such as SPJST and other organizations and from the private sector.

The older young people (ages 17 20) receive assistance in job hunting and many are able later on to stand on their own two feet and then go out on their own after having saved a small amount of money. What a big boost to

each one of these destitute people to know that each can get a shirt or a dress or jacket and a pair of wearable shoes that are so badly needed when going out on a job interview.

In the spirit of the upcoming Yule Season let us each try to relieve a heavy burden from the shoulders of these in need by trying to brace up their spirits by wearing a "new" article of clothing or shoes.

You, yourself may actually feel good about giving.

Give it some thought.

Dear Members and Friends: The meeting on Tuesday, October 3 was called to order by president Brother Jerry Milan.

The pledge to the flag was recited by all present.

Due to the change of time there was a mix - up and our secretary Sister Mary Renfro will give her reports at our next meeting.

Brother Milan thanked our group of members who attended the District III meeting that was hosted by Lodge 135, Ennis. Thanks for the delicious dinner and the hospitality. They had a good turnout.

Congratulations to our volleyball team that won the Division "A" Tournament. They will compete in the State Tournament that will be held in Temple on November 4th.

Sister Carrie Milan, assistant youth leader (Sister Carolyn Cleveland was working), reported on the annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Halloween Party, Tuesday, October 31, at 7 p.m.

The youth club members are asking for cakes for their cake walk so help them out; a bag of candy for the trick and treat bags and goodies for the social that follows. Prizes will be given in different age groups for the best costume. Come out and enjoy the fun.

Sister Rose Steinman reported on our group who attended the Lodge 92 Czech Heritage Day. It was a wonderful occasion, just that being on Saturday, we had to leave early and get back to our hail for a rental, but every minute there, was enjoyed. It's always great to see friends from far and near.

Rosie Steinman won first prize for her costume and Brother Frank and Sister Merel Kovar won the couple award.

Sister Rose Steinman has been like a celebrity with her kroj (costume) in Belton at the Czech Fest, the Octoberfest and State Fair. Everyone wanted a picture of her; or with her.

I heard the State Fair was a big success and I had to miss it. This is my second, week down with pneumonia (I didn't know that's what I had when I went to Belton) but I hated to miss it and glad I didn't. I am getting better everyday and with all the get well wishes pouring in, I will get better.

Thanks to all of you.

A group of us also attended Lodge 84's Czech Fest that was wonderful; as Brother Zapalac said, the Golden Girls are on the road, again. We do love to

go when we can.

I heard that Sisters Maria Prill and Eva Dockery arrived home safely after a visit to Germany. I know they enjoyed it.

Brother Joe Milan had some bad luck while at his Army reunion in Kansas City, Missouri. His room was broken into while he was asleep; good thing he was a sound sleeper.

Sister Carrie Milan, Sister Carolyn Cleveland and Granny (Jewell Clark), spent a few extra days while on the trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas and Branson, Missouri, with car trouble, but all are safe and sound.

Sister Billie Jo Mason had a wonderful week in Acapulco and Sister Marilyn Milan had a wonderful few days in San Francisco.

We extend our get well wishes to Brother Billy Sanders who is recuperating after surgery, and just heard Sister Nancy Krupka is in the hospital; you are in our thoughts and prayers.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of George Anders who passed away Saturday, October 7th.

He was a good friend to many of us.

May he rest in peace.

We extend our congratulations to Brother C .L. and Sister Patti Gage who just celebrated their - 10th anniversary. Have many more!

I want to thank Sister Gage Williams for taking notes at the meeting.

News

Dear Members: Our September monthly meeting began at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 27th.

President Alvin Sefcik welcomed the members and guests and Brother Irving Theiss led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call was answered by everyone, except Sister Louise Willis, who was Correspondence received was read and the minutes of August meeting were read and approved by the members.

Reports given were kitchen report by Esther Kowlaski, bar report by Vicki Dressler, treasury report by Tennie Walla, entertainment report by Helen Wallace, rental report by Jerry Dressler and Trustees' report by Willie Walla; as always, these reports were very encouraging.

Later in the meeting, the youth club members met and gave their report.

Youth Leader Dorothy Watkins is doing a good job and I would like to see more of our youth members join the youth club.

District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton also attended and gave an inspiriting message for everyone.

The "Fraternalist of the Year" chosen for the year 1989 for Lodge 172 is Alvin Sefcik. Our members believe that with all his credentials and past performance on local lodge level, district offices and state committee, Brother Sefcik is a good choice for state fraternalist .

The Rules and Regulations Committee this is year is composed of Joe Krenek, Jerry Dressler, Tennie Walla, Alvin Sefcik and Willie Walla.

Wednesday, October 18, 1989—VESTNIK/7 The Nominating Committee will be elected in the October meeting.

Lodge 172 lost one of our ex presidents, namely, S.L. Seale. John was the president of Lodge 172 in the early days of our lodge. May he rest in peace.

Our work party has finally completed the paint job in the main ballroom and you can notice the difference immediately approximately 40 gallons of paint was used and the lodge wants to thank the men of our lodge who spend about 4 days on this project. Our next work day party will be Monday, October 23 at 8:30 a.m.

The next monthly meeting will be Wednesday, October 25th at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members: The Hardwood floor has been installed. And the last dance with the Vrazels' Band playing was great and everyone had a good time. The next dance will be Saturday, October 28 with BUDDY HRABAL and Memory Lane (country - western) band.

SPECIAL NOTICE: The family socials for November and December have been changed because of Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The November social will be Friday, November 17, so remember and mark your calendar and in December it will be Friday, the 22nd. DON'T FORGET! Another big event to remember is the Four - Lodge Christmas Party with Lodge 183 hosting this year and that will be the first Sunday in December FREE to all members from Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183; for all guests, there will be a $5 charge. Come on out and enjoy a day of fraternalism, a good meal, dance and also installation of officers for 1990. It will begin about 10:30 a.m. and last to about 7:30 p.m., so plan for a big day of fun, fun, fun.

The October membership meeting was held Sunday the 8th at 5 p.m.

There was a small crowd present, but a lot of business was taken care of. The committee for election of officers is Charlie Bragg, Jeanne Roznos and Angeline Stiborek. If you know of someone you would like to run for an office for the 1990 term, please let the committee know.

The election of officers will be held at the November meeting, which will be Sunday (12th) at 5 p.m. You must be there to vote so remember and come cast your vote for the person of your choice.

The committee for Fraternalist of the Year include Norman Kneschk and Angeline Stiborek.

Plans for the Four - Lodge Christmas Party will be finalized at the next officers' meeting on Monday, November 6 so, if you have any ideas, please let the officers know. More about that in the next newsletter.

The members wish to thank John Pustejovsky for painting and fixing things inside the lodge building and Jerry Mikus for mowing and trimming shrubbery around the building. We all give them a big hand, things do look better.

On the sick list is Eugene Roznos who has been ailing some, also his mother has been ill and Mary Ann Roznovsky's father is ill. We send our prayers and hope they get better soon.

There is a saying that you learn from your mistakes, but you learn from mistakes of others, because you may not not live long enough to make all of them yourself. Just think about it, doing what you love is freedom; loving what you do is happiness.

Now a word of wisdom from Helen Keller: "Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoidance of danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."

Dear Members: I know you are all enjoying this cooler weather. It is dry but cooler.

I am sorry I haven't written sooner, but my move to Temple in June and other things have kept me busy. I am enjoying being here so very much. I had forgotten what our Central Texas hospitality was like after being away 30 - plus years. There is nothing like it.

Our District V meeting at Lodge 88 was so nice. There were enough activities to keep us busy, but not so busy that we could not mingle with others. I think our District V President Evelyn Mikeska and the other district officers did an outstanding job! I know our spring meeting will be a good one, too.

Congratulations to Evelyn Mikeska for receiving the FIC of the Year award.

June was truly a busy time for me, after getting moved I drove to Jacksonville, Florida to see my daughter and her family. Two of my sisters, Opal Herrington and Ruth Beasley were with me. My son - in law, Davis Kana, retired from the Navy after 23 years. We attended his ceremonies which were very impressive. He is now employed in Corpus Christi and my daughter, Edna Ann, is happy to be back in Texas. My grandchildren, Kim and Ronnie, have adjusted to "Texas" very well. After twenty - plus years, I now have my children in Texas.

Several of our members reported on their vacations. Evelyn Mikeska visited in Austria, West Germany and Czechoslovakia where she had a wonderful time.

John and Brenda Pike and son, Andy, visited their daughter and son in - law, Susan and Patrick Dunn, in Winter Springs, Florida. Larry and Linda Plunk were with the Pikes and they visited Disney World, Orlando and St. Augustine. They also visited in Alabama and Mississippi on their trip.

Both couples celebrated their 25th wedding anniversaries.

Two of our members, Sharon Faldyn and Carrie Baylor, received SPJST scholarships. Congratulations to both of you!

Jeffrey and Ashlee Tolson (more grandchildren) visited me with their mother, Janice, this summer and we took a tour of the Texas Safari. I can say that is a wonderful and fun place to visit. We were sorry that my son, Wayne, had to work and could not be with us.

The Gene Mikes family visited in Jackson, Wyoming and reported a very enjoyable trip.

Brad and Blanka Hale visited London and Amsterdam while their children visited grandparents in Michigan.

Kulhanek Family Holds Reunion The 17th Kulhanek reunion was held Sunday, September 24, 1989 at Sts. Peter and Paul dining hall in Frelsburg. Holy Mass for deceased family members was celebrated at 10

by Monsignor Bockholt.

Registration began at 11 a.m. followed by a basket lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Deacon Jerry Kulhanek led the prayer before the meal.

The business meeting began at 2 p.m. with Mrs. Wanda Faldyn (president) presiding. Deacon Jerry Kulhanek led the opening prayer and welcomed everyone to the reunion.

Mrs. Dianne Seidel (secretary) read the minutes, and Mrs. Wanda Faldyn gave the treasurer's report , in the absence of Mrs. Mary Luedke (treasurer). Mr. Leonard Kulhanek (historian) spoke briefly about the possibility of a family tree extension to the present Family History Book.

Election of officers was held and those serving will be President -- Mrs. Wanda Faldyn, Secretary -- Mrs. Judith Michaulka and Treasurer -Mrs. Grace Kulhanek.

Relatives attending were recognized in family groups as the descendants of Frank, Joseph, Maurice, Albert, Anton Kulhanek and Marie Kulhanek Canik.

Also recognized were the oldest male and female relatives attending, Mr. Joe Canik of Frelsburg, age 87 years, and Mrs. Albina Krenek of Wallis, age 97 years. The longest married couple present included Mr. and Mrs. Joe Canik married 63 years. The most recently married couple was Mike and Lisa Moeller of Frelsburg married 11 months. The youngest person present was 13 - day - old Mandy Marie Moeller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Moeller. Traveling the longest distance to the reunion was Mr. Gil Goering of Friendswood, Texas.

The 18th Kulhanek reunion will be held in September, 1990 at Sts. Peter and Paul dining hall in Frelsburg, Texas. The meeting closed with a prayer led by Deacon Jerry Kulhanek.

Those attending came from Frelsburg, New Ulm, Fayetteville, Columbus, Wallis, Orchard, Waller, Galena Park, Houston, Corpus Christi, Pasadena, Frydek, El Campo, Friendswood, La Grange, Katy, Weimar, Eagle Lake, Plum, and East Bernard.

Czech Heritage Society News The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting at 5 p.m.

Saturday, November 4, 1989 in the facility of SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas in conjunction with the Third Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival. The meeting will feature a program under the direction of Joe Janak of Victoria, speaking on the history of the early Czech music, orchestras, bands and musical groups in Texas. There will be no charge for this program and the public is cordially invited.

Saturday's activities will continue with a polka and waltz dance starting at 9 p.m. featuring the music of Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen. The Second Annual Gulf Coast Championship Polka - Waltz Contest will be held at 10 p.m. during the dance. Prior to the dance, starting at 7:30 p.m. and lasting for about an hour, entertainment will be furnished by the Frydek Hot Czechs, a group of young entertainers. The admitting donation to this entertainment and dance is only $4 per person. There is no extra charge for participation in the polka - waltz contest.

The doors will open at 10 p.m.

Sunday for fellowship and browsing through the Czech Heritage Society exhibits and the Mini - Museum of the SPJST from Temple. Coffee and kolache will be available. A roast beef and sausage dinner, with all the trimmings, will be served, starting at 11 a.m. The Choral Group, under direction of Tim Kostom, from SPJST Lodge 88 will entertain from 11 to 11:30 a.m., followed by music performed by the Czech Heritage Accordian Band of Galveston County.

Formal opening ceremonies and brief statements, including the singing of the U.S. and Czech national anthems by Helen Hegwood, will start at 12:30 p.m. Following the opening ceremonies, entertainment will be provided by the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County, with remarks in Czech by Father Paul Chovanec. Polka and waltz music from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. will be provided by Charles Mikeska and the "Sensations" from Temple, Texas.

This band is composed of young musicians, mostly of high school and college age. The Parade of Czech Costumes will be held at 3 p.m. during their performance. The festival will conclude with another polka - waltz dance from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. featuring the music of Henry Repka of Houston.

The cost of Sunday's activities includes an admitting donation of $8 per person which includes the noon—. meal, or $4 per person not including the noon meal. Refreshments and snacks are extra.

Youth participate in youth horseshoe contest.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, October 1, the Taiton Lodge No. 30 SPJST Youth Club participated in the Taiton Community Center Fall Festival. Our Taiton Lodge No. 30 Youth Club had a cake and animal walk booth and also a tea sales' booth. Both of our booths came out very successful along with the entire fall festival for Taiton.

We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and participation in making the two booths' benefits and Lodge No. 30 Youth Club a success.

Thank you also youth club member mothers for the donations of cakes and tea and for the wonderful help in supervising the booth that ran so, smoothly. A special thank you to Mrs. Jenna Mae Treumer and Mrs. Joyce Kahanek for their cakes and to Mrs. Annimae Merta for the stuffed animal and all the ice we needed for our tea booth.

We also commend the youth club members -- your participation and cooperation made our booths the success it was. Whenever things needed

Another segment of the Fall Festival Day was the Lodge No. 30 Taiton SPJST youth entertainment. This was held in the late afternoon and we, again, commend them on a wonderful job done. Participating in the entertainment first was our Beseda dance group, namely, Craig Dornak, Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dorotik, Valerie Roye, Michael Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotik, Curtis Dorotik and Sarah Dluhos -- also the first place SPJST State Winners for 1989. Chase Zalman, then did his karate routine to "Eye of the Tiger," which won him second place at state level. Jeanine Dorotik and Lenice Kaspar, followed with a tap number to "At the Hop." Craig Dorotik did his entertaining pantomine to "Another Saturday Night." Jeanine Dorotik then wowed the audience with her 1988 First Place State Individual winning tap dancing to "Karma Chameleon." Valerie Roye and Tracy Krpec got a jazzy response when they did their pantomime routine to 'Cars That Go Boom," which they won third place in State Junior Group Talent this year.

Performing her first place 1989 State Individual winning was Lenice Kaspar doing her tap dance routine to "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Then, Craig Dornak, Craig Dorotik and Michael Kaspar had the audience in stitches with their 1987 State First Place Junior Group winning doing a skit to "The Hole in the Bucket." And concluding our program was Jeanine Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar and Valerie Roye doing their trio clogging routine to "Orange Blossom Special."

In charge of emceeing the program of entertainment was Marcy Dorotik.

The audience really enjoyed the youth's entertainment; especially, since for so many of our own locally in Taiton not having had the opportunity of seeing these youth perform yet before this day -- so thank you youth of Lodge 30 for the extra effort put forth.

It was definitely a successful day for our youth club with our booths and time fraternally spent with our friends and neighbors in our Taiton community.

On Sunday, October 1, Stephanie Roye, from our own Lodge No. 30 Taiton Youth Club, participated in her next commitment as SPJST State Queen. She helped emcee the SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest activities at the Central Texas State Fair in Belton.

With our youth club's commitment locally and regrettably not being able to be a part of Fraternal Fest this year, we felt confident with Stephanie representing our lodge as State Queen representative for the 1989 Czech Fraternal Fest activities.

On Saturday, September 30, the Taiton Youth Club also performed at the Grande Day festivities in El Campo. Our Beseda dance group performed along with Chase Zalman doing his karate routine. Lenice Kaspar also performed her Yankee Doodle Dandy tap dance routine.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 25 Ennis Youth Club News We had our youth meeting on October 4, 1989. Julie Fowler led us in the pledge.

We made plans for our trip to the Fair and also for our Halloween Party.

Our party will be on October 25th.

We are also going to be selling candy for our club.

The El Campo - Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 Youth Club met Tuesday, October 3, 1989 in the Gold Room at -Commercial State Bank to make plans for upcoming events.

Kim Kacal presided over the meeting. Bryan Kutac led the Pledge of Allegiance and Martha Bartos led the club motto and read the minutes of our previous meeting. Danny Borak gave the treasurer's report. Brittany Bernhard was introduced as a guest.

The group planned to meet at 7 a.m. at McDonald's on Saturday, October 7, 1989 to leave for the Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, Texas. The charity project for October was to collect can tabs to help buy time on a dialysis machine for a patient.

The November project is to collect newspaper for St. Philip's paper drive.

Each member is also supposed to write a poem on a short storytelling what he or she is thankful for as a November project.

Members decided to hold a bake sale December 2 at Wal - Mart as a Christmas fund - raiser. The club's Christmas Party will be held December 9 in Hillje. The SPJST District VI fall meeting will be held October 29 in Hillje; members will perform a skit.

An ornament contest will be held again at the district meeting.

Ornaments are to be handmade and be no larger than a 3 - inch cube.

Poems were read by Darren Dybala, Sharon Borak, Danny Borak, Kim Kacal, Jody Krpec, Jennifer Reck and Brittany Bernhard.

Prizes were brought by members and winners were drawn. Members practiced their skit for the district meeting and worked on craft projects to be used for table decorations at the district meeting.

The next youth meeting will be November 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members, On September 16, 1989, District V youth clubs held a fall social at Astroworld; the youth clubs included were Lodge 88, Lodge 142 and Lodge 172. Lodge 88, Houston and Lodge 142, Houston met at the Lodge 88 building. When they arrived at Astroworld, they met youth and adults of Lodge 172.

24 Cyclone Youth Meeting

Dear Readers, The October 8, 1989 meeting of Lodge 24 Youth Club was called to order by Vice President Christy Marek at 2:45 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jason Harvell. Members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased members.

In attendance, we had eleven members and one adult present.

Shawn Ashcraft was our guest at this meeting. Officers present included Vice President Christy Marek, Treasurer Carl Macek and Reporter Melanie Zavodny.

Correspondence was read by the vice president. Our SYD Claudette Reese thanked the youth and leaders who helped and participated at the recent Czech Fraternal Fest. Also, a note was received from the Bell County Child Welfare Board asking for financial support to help ensure that foster children within our county can experience the joy of having a special Christmas gift. Our club will donate $25 to this organization and we hope these children have a very special Christmas.

The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Carl Macek. The balance was $539.28. This balance excludes the $25 we received from the Supreme Lodge for the first quarter of the year's membership.

We are selling SPJST candy to make money for our club. Orders will be taken until October 26th. Youth members need to get this completed order form to Youth Leader Rose Harvell by October 29th. The member selling the most items will receive a

prize. So, Lodge 24 youth are encouraged to sell, and friends, please support these youth.

The District II cookbooks are also available for $2.50 These cookbooks are composed of the food entries' recipes from the 1989 District II YAD. The social for this month will also be a Halloween Party. We will meet at Flag Hall at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 29th. From there we will go to a nursing home and deliver Halloween treats to the patients. Members, dress in your costumes and also wear a big smile! Then, we will go skating and to eat pizza. This will be a fun - day, so please, make an effort to attend.

After the meeting, the youth worked on Halloween decorations for the nursing home patients.

"Happy Birthday" to Carl Macek (October 9) and Melanie Zavodny (October 22).

The next meeting will be Sunday, November 12, 1989 at 2:30 p.m.

Crew, Bugs Bunny Follies, Bugs Bunny Cartoon Theater, Stars of the USSR, the Beat Goes On, U.S. High Diving Team, Spirit of America (fireworks show), Horizons Theater, Texas Cowpalace, and Aquarena Theater. The Texas Cowpalace and Cornelius D. Crew are my two personal favorites.

There are many shops where anyone can purchase a favorite souvenir.

Some of these are T - Shirt Shop, Wearabouts, Front Street, Balloons, Peddlers, The Clubhouse, Emporium, Teddy Bear Shop, Americana Hats, Cozy Critters and Key Chain Photos.

Others include Bugs Bunny Toy Show, Computer Portrait, European Candy, Fotozines, Contempo, Nottingham Gift Shop, Airbrush T - Shirts, Portrait Artists, Oriental Hats, Pick a - Pearl. Many more of all the shops are La Tienda, Firehouse T - Shirt Shop, Country Store, Antique Photos, Country Corner, Fred's Trading Post, Recording Studios, and Sign Shop.

29 Taylor Monthly Youth Meeting

When one gets hungry or thirsty, it is very hard to decide where to stop with so many restaurants and refreshments. Some of these include Sparkey's Care and Cutlet, Malte Shoppe, Ralph's Refreshment Corner, Americana Pastries, Po - Boy Meat Market, and Rainbo Bakery. More places to stop and eat are Alphine Food Court, Computer Room Refreshments, Coney Island Hot Dog, Ice Cream Parlour, Popeye's Chat - n Chew and Corny Dog Corner. More restaurants include Festhalle, Nottingham Refreshments, King's Corner, House of Sweets, Shanghai Grill, Refreshment Stand, La Centina, Los Lios, Buenos Nachos, Thunder River, Drink Stand, Gabby's Plaza Pizza and Plaza Sno Treats.

The October 8, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 29 Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Darrell Malicoat.

Sheri Machu led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and remained standing for the SPJST Motto.

The register was read and there were 33 members and 17 adults present.

Guest introduced was James Barcuch.

The minutes were read and approved.

Fund - raising plans for this month are selling the SPJST candy.

This month's social will be "Lock in" at SPJST Hall on October 20, 1989.

Our Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported the plans for our "Lock - in" and selling of the candy. The SPJST cookbooks are selling for $2.50 each.

The next youth club meeting will be on November 12, 1989 at 3 p.m. in the SPJST Hall. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30. p.m.

Astroworld's biggest highlight for most are all the rides and attractions.

The newest looping roller coaster for 1989 is the Viper. Other rides that are still enjoyed are Dentzel Carousel, Alphine Astroway, Enchanted Kingdom, Texas Cyclone, Wherling Dervish, Astroweedle, Antique Taxis, Looping Starship, Excalibars and Joustabout. Other rides are Bamboo Shoot, Serpent, Oriental Corner Train Station, Tidal Wave, Skyscreamer, Warp 2000, Thunder River, Greezed Lightnin', Gunslinger, Wagon Wheel, Western Junction Train Depot, and XLR-8.

With so many shows, shops, restaurants and rides all in one park, Astroworld was a big day for us all.

Last year the district also went to Astroworld. It is always an enjoyed activity. For those with season passes, DYC Marie Stayton gave $5 spending cash and everyone including season pass holders, received $2. The day terminating at 5 p.m. was a a super great one for me and for many others as well.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Seaton Lodge 47 Youth Club meeting was called to order at 2 p.m.

by President Jason Reese. The pledge and SPJST motto were led by Erin Skrabanek.

There were 14 members present along with 2 guests. The guests were Lisa Greger and Ross Wellen. We have 2 new members this month, namely, Cody Leshikar and Alan Brown.

Birthdays for the month of October are for Gary Skrabanek, Jennifer Kohutek and Cody Leshikar.

Next Saturday, our lodge will be picking trash on the highway.

Everyone needs to be there who hasn't picked already.

October 29 will be family night and Halloween night. Youth club members, be sure to get out there and sell that candy! Orders need to be turned in on October 26th. See you at the next meeting.

Kovar - Prcin - Volcik Reunion The annual Kovar - Prcin - Volcik reunion will be held Sunday, October 29, 1989 at VFW Hall in Circleville, Texas. Each family is asked to bring a meat dish and vegetable or dessert dish for members of their family attending.

Each family is also asked to bring a door prize and something for the country store. Registration begins at 10 a.m.
