On Saturday, September 16, SFM Gene McBride held a sales representative training class at the Supreme Lodge in Temple. Four new SPJST Sales Representatives were trained in all forms of life insurance

The SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest Sunday, October 1st at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton was enjoyed by a large group of fraternalists from various lodges in our State of Texas.

The count as to how many registered is not at your editor's fingertips at present, however, some assumed that there were approximately 1,000 present for the afternoon program.

Indeed there were numerous participants in the presentation of the program, such as Czech singing, parade of authentic and Texas - style costumes, Czech - Moravian dances, Texas - Czech dances, accordian music, gymnastic exhibition, SPJST first place talent winners' numbers, which concluded with a polka - waltz contest followed by a dance.

It was surprising to see how many took part in the contest, which revealed that people still love the polka and waltz - type of music, contrary to reports in various circles that interest in those dances has faded.

Remember -- polkas and waltzes have outlasted "Black - Bottom, Charleston, Swing," etc. by quite a number of years; for instance, how many of you can do the "Black Bottom" today?

The Central Texas news media certainly did a fine job publicizing the "first" SPJST Fraternal Czech Fest on television Channels 6 and 10, plus the Temple Daily Telegram. Also those in attendance should appreciate the work that was put into it behind the scenes by the individuals from the SPJST Home Office. *** Tuesday, October 3rd your editor visited with the five officers at our Supreme Lodge in a meeting for over 2 hours for an interesting exchange of information, ideas and views toward the future of our SPJST Society and also to discuss ways to remedy some misconceptions and/or errors made in some facets of our operation.

It was a frank "give - and - take" discussion in a fraternal atmosphere where each one present gave their opinion on how to better serve our membership with stress being made that our membership has the right for their input and some concern was evident that many of our members do NOT take enough interest in their lodge affairs and also our Society.

The study of our Supreme Lodge office and the operation thereof has been completed and one of the things it revealed is that our Society is operating well, however, conditions in the insurance have had their impact on our way of doing business.

We are now operating under the 1980 CSO (Commissioners Standard Ordinary) tables which project longer lives and, thus, lower premiums plus the "rolled over" cash values for newer plans of insurance has reduced the income to our Investment Department.

Our SPJST Society is sound and we ALL must work and strive to keep it so. These columns will carry more information after the Supreme Lodge October quarterly meeting next week, which we plan to attend. It was a very sincere meeting with an "eye - to - the future."

While discussing the expenses of our Society, which amount to quite an amount, the cost of the convention was considered and the daily expenses there and throughout the year. An interesting point was brought up by SL Vice President Gebala (who was in the U S military service) about the "per diem" as used in the U.S. armed services and your editor (who also served in the military) agrees, that you receive a "per diem" and pay your meals, expenses, etc. *** Members, you are encouraged to read the article by SL Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska in this issue! *** Fayetteville SPJST Lodge plans to reorganize. A new slate of officers was elected to head the reorganized SPJST Lodge No. 1 in Fayetteville, Texas.

The election took place during a special reorganization meeting held at Keilers Restaurant in Fayetteville, September 15th.

Louis Polansky was elected president; Glenn Pflughaupt was chosen to be vice - president and Irene Polansky will serve as secretary treasurer.

Some 25 local members were given information about a number of available options for a comprehensive program of family and fraternal activities planned for the lodge.

Andrew Vavra, an SPJST director from Caldwell, encouraged the new group to implement a full program of activities that will be a major asset for the entire community.

Leonard Mikeska, an official from the SPJST headquarters in Temple, discussed the many programs available for the Fayetteville area. The SPJST is a statewide fraternal organization with 119 lodges with nearly 53,000 members. Mikeska said that in addition to providing its members with modern insurance products, the SPJST is a family - oriented fraternal benefit society providing 'a vast array of programs including organized youth activities, scholarships, tournaments, entertainment and community involvement.• The special title of honorary president was bestowed on Lad C. Cmajdalka who served as president of the lodge for 47 years. The title of honorary financial secretary was given to Edwin Kubena for 30 years of service in that post.

Sunday, October 29 -- Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje will host District VI fall meeting and social with lots of good entertainment. Be there! Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 will be observing their Czech Day the same day which always turns out to be a "huge" one where a large variety of entertainment is planned as well as delicious food served; Czech language is still spoken very much among members and their friends. *** Starting this month you may be able to send a fax from your local post office. The service will be available in some 260 post offices by summer's end and will cost about $8 for 10 minutes, roughly 20 pages' worth, plus phone company charges. Charges must be paid by credit card. ***

From The SecretaryTreasurer's Office Strengths Of The SPJST The true measure of an organization involves a great deal more than financial strength. In the course of my duties managing the investments of the SPJST, much of my time is spent analyzing the financial information of corporations in which we invest your money. But before a final investment decision is made, I also like to look at the other strengths of the corporation.

All of us are satisfied that the SPJST has great financial strength and stability. The purpose of this article is to share with you my opinion on other very important strengths and advantages that will help the SPJST prosper and grow. What are some of these strengths YOU HAVE A VOICE AND A VOTE. The fact that you as a member have a voice in the control of the SPJST has to be one of our greatest strengths. You have the privilege of determining the operation of your local lodge. You have a voice and determine the kind of programs your local lodge will provide. Through your democratically - elected delegates and the convention - elected officials, you influence decisions on the general course and operations of the entire SPJST. True, you may not always agree with the decision of majority but at least you had the opportunity to influence the decision.

At a time when there is an increasing tendency for organizations to look at you as a number and make all decisions for you, it is refreshing to know that there is still an organization that sees you as an individual and gives you a voice in its control. Our strong democratic lodge system places us in an excellent position for good growth.

deciding on programs offered by your lodge. Take advantage of your privileges and help your lodge build a full program of activities for the entire family. Resource individuals are available at the district and state levels to help your lodge with its programs.

WE BELIEVE IN THE COMMUNITY. A community is always a better place if it is fortunate enough to have an active SPJST lodge.

The SPJST is well - recognized as an organization which brings the community together for varied endeavors for the good of the people who reside there.

The patriotism demonstrated in our lodges communicates our love for country.

All of us are aware of the increased amount of volunteerism throughout America. Throughout our history, our lodges and members have been involved in their communities.

The SPJST derives great strength and prestige from the fact that people generally associate our lodges with volunteerism efforts and caring for one another.

OUR FRATERNAL PROGRAMS INVOLVE ALL AGE GROUPS. Many organizations concentrate on one age group or a single purpose. We are stronger because we are involved in a multitude of efforts that involve all age groups.

For our youth, we have an extensive program of activities aimed at building character, learning leadership skills and giving our young members a place in the organization. As the youth reach college age, we show our support through our scholarship program.

We are committed to encouraging a variety of programs for adults of all ages and feel that the recent establishing of the Fraternal Activity Coordinator position will help to build even more adult fraternal programs.

Above all, many activities are classified as family activities that have appeal to all age groups.

WE CELEBRATE OUR HERITAGE. We are proud of our rich heritage and find strength in preserving it for our children. From a serious side, we support programs such as the Czech Chair, (endowment for Czech studies), Czech language studies, and other means of preserving our customs.

On a lighter side, lodges promote festivals and fun - filled activities that bring people and communities together. Our lodge programs of social activities serve s to round out our activities and keep our members united.

THE ORGANIZATION BELIEVES IN YOU. Good leaders of the SPJST, at all levels, appreciate your involvement. They demonstrate by publicly recognizing your volunteer efforts at lodge and other functions and through communications in our fine weekly Vestnik.

THE SPJST. The SPJST is a type of organization that is greatly needed in this day and time. We are financially strong and strong in people resources.

We are planning for, the future and, if we take advantage of our strengths, we can expect solid and outstanding growth. We need you to help the SPJST achieve its full potential. You and only you can make it happen.

District V held their Family Day Fall meeting on September 17, 1989 at - Lodge 88 in Houston. A really good time was had by all those who attended. Six lodges were represented and the attendance was 176.

Registration started at 12:00 noon, social hour continued until serving time at 1:00 p.m.

President Evelyn Mikeska thanked each and everyone for all the good food furnished by the attendees and for all the help that was offered by members of various lodges in District V. There is always a lot of personal assistance that is required in order to make these meetings successful, and the officers of District V feel that we Brother Dan A. Juren who faithfully served as secretary, financial secretary had a very good day. and treasurer of Lodge 51 for a total of 50 years, was recognized for his devoted effort. Many thanks to him for his service to the SPJST and may good health remain with him in his retiring years.

District III Volleyball Tournament The District III Fall Volleyball Tournament was held September 24 at Lodge 135, Ennis. We had two teams in the "A" Spiking League. There were three teams in the "B" Non Spiking League.

In the "A" League, Lodge 154, Fort Worth won first place and Lodge 135, Ennis won second place.

In the "B" League, Lodge 66 Team One won first place and Lodge 66 Team Two won second place. Lodge 84, Dallas won third place.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the tournament.

We all had a fun - filled afternoon and early night by volleyball. I want to give a "Special Thanks" to Larry Laznovsky for all the work he did on the tournament. Thanks, Lodge 135 and everyone who had a part in making the day a success.

Wednesday, October 11, 1989—VESTNIK/5 We were most happy to have as our guests, Brother Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge and his wife, Betty.

Brother Mikulas presented Sister Evelyn Mikeska with an award from the Fraternal Insurance Congress of America honoring her as Fraternal Insurance Counselor of the Year. She has served as an insurance representative for 20 years.

Lodge Presidents in attendance were Brother Jerry Ermis (Lodge 88), Brother Dennis Hermis (Lodge 142), Brother Alvin Sefcik (Lodge 172) and Brother Alvin Franta (Lodge 91).

Also in attendance was Carrie Baylor from Lodge 196, who received a Scholarship Award, as well as Darlene Migl from Lodge 88, who received a Merit Scholarship Award, both awards from the Supreme Lodge.

You were promised some fun time for the day, and it was enjoyed by everyone. The spinning wheel saw a lot of activity, which, besides free tickets given to those bringing merchandise to use for prizes, generated some cash funds for the District V treasury. We wish to thank everyone who brought items and all those who played the game. The swimming pool opened at 3:30 p.m. and, even though the day was rather cool, there was some participation at the pool. The social times, before and after the meeting time, provided free beer and soft drinks, which were enjoyed by everyone. The door prizes were drawn for at various times and the winners were all happy about that.

AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING of Lodges 88 and 142 members.

Lodge 23, Moravia met Tuesday, September 12 at the lodge hall with thirteen members present.

President Albert Olsovsky opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, followed by a moment of silence for all the departed members, the latest being Cecelia Berger.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and the financial report was given, also a report on our successful bake sale. Our members were generous with their donations.

All the correspondence was read and then there was a discussion about the District VI fall social meeting which will be held October 29 at the SPJST Lodge in Hillje. The members decided to send 10 cents per member to Lodge No. 40 which is hosting the meeting while seven members are planning to attend. Then the members decided to donate $15 to the Czech Chair Fund and $15 to Restoration of Battleship Texas Fund. The individual activity work sheets were handed out and I hope each member remembers to put down their activities as time goes by so it will be easier for us to fill out the activities report.

Our next meeting will be held on December 10 at 2 p.m. at Vrana's cabin, followed by a Christmas Party.

We are looking forward to all our members being present.

The quilt contest winners were Margie Anders, first prize with runner - up Edna Froehlich. The first prizes were $25 cash and a plaque from the Supreme Lodge. Sister Marie Stayton selected the judges for all these contests, and we wish to express our

thanks to her and to them for their help.

Again, the officers of District V would like to express our appreciation to each and every member who gave of their time and effort to make our Family Day - Fall meeting a success, and we feel that it really was. We especially wish to thank Lodge 88 and all of its participating members for the use of their lodge and for all the help by the individuals who assisted in whatever capacity.

When you are not able to make it to these meetings, you really miss a good time of fellowship and fun. We look forward to seeing you all at our spring meeting in March, 1990 at Lodge 142 in Houston.

We are proud to announce that as a result of a special social games on August 16, the Social Games Committee of Flag Hall was able to present $1,000 to "Jerry's Kids" for Muscular Dystrophy Research. Carol Chervenka and Bernice Sebek made the presentation to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation on Labor Day. We are so proud of our hard - working committee and we are very thankful for all the people who came out and supported these special games and all the games that we have every Wednesday night here at the hall at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, February 24, 1990, the State Officers' Workshop will be held here at Flag Hall.

The new Rules and Regulations Committee was named -- Rose Harvell, Louise Zavodny and Nancy Posvar.

31eiblerville Lodge No. 33, Fish Fry The annual fish fry will be held on Sunday, October 15, 1989 at the SPJST Bleiblerville Hall.

Fish to go will be served from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. The complete meal consisting of fish, cole slaw, chips, bread, catsup (eat all you want) for $5.50 per adult and children for ages 6 to 12, $2.75 will start serving at 11:30 a.m.

There will also be a horseshoe tournament with registration at 1 p.m. and tournament begins at 2 p.m.

All members are kindly asked to bring cakes, or pies, cookies kolache.

Lodge No. 29, Taylor Tarok Tournament Big Success The Championship Tarok Tournament held at the Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 was termed a grew success. There were 56 players coming from as far as Midland, Rowena, Hurst, Caldwell, West, Burnet, Buckholts, Temple, Granger, Taylol Austin and Pflugerville.

The winners of the tournament were: Henry Kubala of West -- first place Bruce Havlak of Rowena -- second place Edith Kurtin of Granger -- third place Aleen Gaida of Granger -- four 11 place higr Lillian Kaspar of Taylor point round We thank everyone who registereC and came to play. Hopefully, we conducted the tournament honestly and fairly. We did receive some compliments on the tournament as well as some input on some things we could do to improve next year's tournament.

We are scheduling our tournament next year for Saturday, September 22, 1990. So all of you who attended this year can mark your calendar. To those of you who missed this year for various reasons, try to plan on coming next year. We will be glad to have you and will try to make it an enjoyable day for you to remember.

Special thanks go to Frank and Erma Khnkovsky for their volunta; help throughout the day. Also thanks to Andy Vavra and Willie E. Kohutek who paid us a surprise visit. Wi'li brought a blue windbreaker jacket which he donated to be given to one of the players as a door prize; each player's number was put in a box and one was drawn out. The lucky winner was John Pavelka of Granger.

Many thanks to Lydia Jansen, Marcella Gola, Lillian Kaspar, Dorothy Markert, Aleen Gaida, Frances Tallas, Ila Mae Jansky, Adrienne Simcik and Denisse VVuensche for baking and donating the kolache, cinnamon rolls, cookies, pies, pigs in the blanket, and "Buchta" for the players and visitors to enjoy during their breaks. To Lodge 84, Dallas Lodge 84 is sponsoring a GOULASH SUPPER on November 7, 1989 beginning at 6:45 p.m., with proceeds going toward the support of the Czech Language Chair Fund and the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund which are projects chosen by the Supreme Lodge to receive our support.

Those of you who are old enough.rnay remember that the Battleship Texas played a big part in World War II and is now in need of vital repairs to carry on its historical importance to the State of Texas and those who served on her. The Czech Language Chair Fund is a project which should be dear to the hearts of all who share the Czech heritage because it will provide a Czech Language Chair to a university in Texas, which will match funds to establish a permanent department to teach the Czech Language at that university.

We hope that all lodge members will come and bring their friends for this time of fun, fellowship and good food while providing funds for these two worthy projects.

The cost of the supper is $3 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 and will consist of homemade goulash, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Of course, if you would like to contribute additional money toward these funds, you are most welcome to do so.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas Honors Its Senior Members On August 13, Lodge 84 paid a tribute to the members who have reached the age of 70 and over.

We had a beautiful turnout of these people who, for many years, have been so loyal and dedicated to their lodge.

This is why some of us, who have not reached that age, yet, decided to do something a little extra-ordinary for those who have, and we are glad we did.

The lodge hall was beautifully decorated by the committee and the youth of Lodge 84.

It was transformed into a fancy restaurant. Our "Maitre Dee" (Mai'tre d') directed the guests to their tables; our Teen and Junior Youth Club members dressed in their Czech costumes waited on tables. It was just fantastic watching everybody working and doing their best.

Seaton Choral Club News Dear Brothers and Sisters: An update on the upcoming engagement at the Burmont Nursing Home in North Temple on Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m. We will not meet on the fourth Tuesday at Seaton. Star Hall, but perform at Burmont on Wednesday.

We practiced for our performance at the Expo Center for the SPJST Fraternal Czech Fest on Sunday, October 1st. We all signed a get well card for Martha Kiusacek who could not be present due to surgery on her toe. She could not go with us singing at the Fraternal Fest. Get well soon because we are missing you!

Those who performed at the Expo Center Ralph were Milek (accordianist), Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Lillian Mikulec, Ruby Bolton, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Anne Krcha, Agnes Schiller, Georgia Sodek, Dorothy Pechal, and Calvin and Mildred Chervenka of Dallas helped us.

Emily Stuteville was in Las Vegas having a good time. Helen and Henry Janacek were hosting a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spurek.

I enjoyed the entire day hosted by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. Thanks to all the performers who kept the audience entertained. The dance contests brought out many good dancers and 6 trophies to the winners.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home S.P.J.S.T. Rest No. I Volunteer Party Home No. II Corner The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home held their volunteer party on September 12, 1989.

Mrs. Frances Schwenker welcomed all the volunteers and introduced Rev. Felix Sager who gave a short devotion.

Mrs. Louise Sager read two poems entitled "The Strength Of A Friend" and "Friends, a Precious Gift".

Mrs. Schwenker called each volunteer's name and Mrs. Kovar, activity director, gave out the 5 - year certificates to the ones who devoted their time to the rest home. Both of us wish to thank all the volunteers for their untiring efforts.

The following were presented certificates, namely, Mrs. Eunice Stoll, Milton Blomquist, Mrs. Louise Sager, Rev. Laura Myers just returned from her vacation and reported a wonderful time.

The Senior Citizen social held at the Presbyterian Church was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix, Louis Smith and Hilda Clark.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Ella Eisman and Alice Bergen came to have sing - a - long with the residents.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty came to have Bible study with the residents.

In the afternoon, Ida Gasch, Annie Stavinoha, Cecilia Fernandez and Lorene Novosad came to play social games with the residents.

The Damon ladies, Immanuel United Church of Christ ladies, Presbyterian ladies, and Sunshine ladies came Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar came to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Melva Hastings, Freda Klawitter and Melva Hastings came to roll hair.

Thursday afternoon, September 7, the residents enjoyed homemade ice cream.

Kubena Family Celebrate Birthday Julia Kubena Mendel, daughter of the late J.R. and Julia Kubena was hosted on her 80th birthday with a party on September 23, 1989 at the SPJST Lodge No. 1 Hall in Fayetteville, Texas.

Her father was one of the organizers of the SPJST Society in 1897 and secretary for 40 years.

The party was given by her children Don Mendel, Cecile Wheeler and Bob Mendel.

At least seventy - five guests attended, including her four brothers, John Kubena (who served as SPJST District I director for several years), Lambert Kubena, Woodrow Kubena, Edwin Kubena and sister, Anita Rosenberg, besides other relatives and friends.

Sister Mendel is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 1 for more than 50 years.

Heritage Society State Meeting Czech

The Czech Heritage Society will have a state meeting along with the Fayette County Chapter's Genealogy workshop.

DATE: November 11, 1989 TIME: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

PLACE: La Grange SPJST Hall The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. A lunch will be provided at noon for which a fee will be charged.

The Birthday Party was held Friday afternoon, September 29, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres. The Immanuel United Church of Christ (S.I.S.) provided cakes. Volunteers were Melva Hastings, Ida Gasch and Jennifer Fishbeck helped serve the cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of August.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home for the residents.

From The Youth Leader Lodge 66 Youth Club Meeting Dear Members, Lodge 66 Youth Club met on September 17, 1989. There were 17 youth, 3 leaders and 4 parents present.

We have a new member, Michael Tierce. We also had 2 visitors, Waylon Calloway and Kyle Bouska. We hope you enjoyed the meeting and will come back soon.

The youth donated gifts for the men of the Moody Nursing Home. I want to thank each one of you for participating in this project. We all met at the lodge on September 26 and made Halloween name plates for the patients' doors at the nursing home.

For our October meeting, the youth will donate candy for "Trick or Treat" at the nursing home.

At our meeting, we had a special program for our Lodge 66 Anniversary Party. We honored all grandparents at the lodge. At the end of our program, we had a candlelight ceremony for the deceased members of our lodge.

The birthday cake was brought by Nicole Pruitt. The game was brought

by Justine Engelke. The door prize was won by Katherine Warren and Sandra Trickett.

I would like to thank everyone who had a part and helped with the program.

An Open Letter To District V Youth Thanks to the youth of SPJST District V. Your time, effort, and donation to the District V General Fund are greatly appreciated by the district.

The teamwork that you displayed during our district fall social at Lodge Pokrok No. 88 September 17 truly exhibits Benevolence - Humanity and Brotherhood.

Your continued efforts helping your individual lodge as well as District V is commendable.

As you grow in stature and later in life realize what the youth of today means to the SPJST Society, you can then look back and proudly say that "I was a member of the youth group that helped our society grow."

For those members who aren't aware of the donation of the youth to the District V General Fund, I think that you should know.

The youth worked diligently during the time of our district social and conducted a drawing that netted $35 which in turn was donated to the District General Fund.

It must be great to be young and to be able to do all the things that our youth undertakes.

Remember youth -- you will one day be in total charge of our society — good luck and may you go far.

District V YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, On July 23, 1989 District V held their 1989 YAD competition. After a whole year of preparing for the day, participants gathered at the Lodge 88 building in Houston to register at 11 a.m. About 11:30 a.m., the fabulous crew headed by Annie Vala served a wonderful meal of ham, potato salad and beans. Desserts were sold by Lodge 88 Birthday Club Sisters.

Then, after everyone had signed in with either Cindy Groendes or Crystal.

Wallace and registered with either Mrs. Kieschnick, Mrs. Linney or Mrs. Hermis, the program began at 1 p.m.

Darlene and Marlene Migl presented the flags and introductions of our Lodge 88 President Jerry Ermis, District V Director Louis Hanus, SYD Claudette Reese, youth leaders and assistants, and the day's MCs, Marlene and Darlene Migl.

Next, we went on with Individual Talent. Competing in the 6 to 9 age group was Daniel Mabry singing "The Lollypop Tree" from Lodge 142. In 10 - 12 age group were John Buri of Lodge 142 playing the accordian, Lindsey Michalak of Lodge 88 singing "The Greatest Love Of All," Kristy Sokol from Lodge 88 with a dance to "Iko, Iko," and Matthew Mabry from Lodge 142 singing a song combination "Oklahoma" and "Do - Re - Mi." In 13 - 14 age group, Melissa Havemann from Lodge 88 did a dance to "Jail House Rock." In 15 - 17 age group Crystal Wallace of Lodge 88 sang "Climb Every Mountain."

Then, we went on to Group Talent.

In Junior Group Talent, Matthew and Daniel Mabry of Lodge 142 sang and performed sign language to "Love In Any Language." In Senior Group Talent Crystal Wallace and Cindy Gorendes from Lodge 88 did a song and dance routine to "Side - By Side."

In order for the Royalty contestants to have a. chance to get ready, there was an intermission before the competition began. After all were ready, the six contestants began their performance. Running for Queen were Michelle Linney (Lodge 88) with her Duchess Amanda Hermis (Lodge 142) and Crystal Wallace (Lodge 88) with her Duchess Melissa Havemann (Lodge 88). Running for King was Keith Kieschnick (Lodge 142) with his Duke Nicholas Havemann (Lodge 88).

During the waiting period for Royalty results, MCs Darlene and Marlene Migl read off the Royalty autobiographies. Then, DYC Marie Stayton spoke about our judges and presented each with a potted plant.

Next, the 1988 Royalty gave some final remarks. Queen Crystal Wallace, King Keith Kieschnick and Duke Nicholas Havemann spoke on how great the year was, and Duchess Jamie Meyer had sent her message that she enjoyed it.

Then, SYD Claudette Reese and District V Director Louis Hanus presented the point winners with their cash prize. From Lodge 88 (in the juniors) were: 1st - Kristy Sokol, 2nd Cindy Groendes, 3rd - Angela Gloria, 4th - Julio Gloria, 5th - Amanda Havemann. In the Lodge 88 (teens) were: 1st - Michelle Linney, 2nd Darlene Migl, 3rd - Marlene Migl, 4th Crystal Wallace, 5th - Tommie Wallace. From Lodge 142 (juniors) included: 1st - John Buri, 2nd Amanda Hermis, 3rd - Jason Hermis, 4th - Matthew Mabry, 5th - Daniel Mabry. In the teens was Keith Kieschnick. Next, Craft and Talent winners were announced. Among some of the first place winners in Craft, that I know of, the following competed at State YAD, namely: Darrell Havemann, Darren Havemann, Nicholas Havemann, Jason Michalak, Tammy Patke, Daniel Mabry, Matthew Mabry, Keith Kieschnick, Melissa Havemann, Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl and Brian Havemann.

In Individual Talent competition the winners were in the following order: 1st - Daniel Mabry (Lodge 142, 6 - 9); 1st - Kristy Sokol (Lodge 88, 10 - 12); 2nd - John Buri (Lodge 142, 10 - 12); 3rd - Matthew Mabry (Lodge 142, 10 12); 1st - Melissa Havemann (Lodge 88, 13 - 14); 1st - Crystal Wallace (Lodge 88, 15 - 17).

In Group Talent winners (juniors) were Daniel and Matthew Mabry (Lodge 142); Senior Group -- Cindy Groendes and Crystal Wallace (Lodge 88).

For Scrapbook Lodge 88, with a Cindy committee composed of Groendes (chairman), Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl got a trophy and $20 cash prize for winning first place, and Lodge 142 with committee representative Jason Hermis received a $10 cash prize for 2nd place. Both scrapbooks were to go to State YAD. Finally, the new 1989 Royalty was announced, robed, crowned and received their trophies. 1st runner - up Queen was Michelle Linney with Duchess Amanda Hermis.

The 1989 Royalty include Queen Crystal Wallace, Duchess Melissa Havemann, King Keith Kieschnick and Duke Nicholas Havemann. They will be competing at State Royalty on August 26, 1989. The other winners will compete at State YAD on August 27, 1989.

After taking pictures, everyone was congratulated and went home to get ready for camp the next week. I want to say congratulations to everyone and good luck was wished to all of them. I was very glad to see District VI DYC Anita Roye with two of her daughters, Valerie and Stephanie, there. Thanks to DYC Marie Stayton, Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing, Youth Leaders Barbara Linney (88), and Lora Mabry (142), Assistant Youth Leaders Lou Groendes (88) and Elizabeth Hermis (142), Sound Operator Tim Kostom and the help of his wife, Rosalee, Stage Operator Donny Havemann, A.J. Stayton (lights), Karl Lindemann (temperature operator) plus our own Lodge 88 youth members, Darlene and Marlene Migl who did a super job as mistresses of ceremony for the day.

Crystal Wallace 1989 Dist. V Queen/Reporter (9-19-89) —SPJST-

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club met Sunday, September 3rd at the Taiton Community Center. Seven adults and fourteen youth members were present.

The meeting was conducted by President Stephanie Roye. The pledge was led by Curtis Dorotik and the prayer was said by Marcy Dorotik.

Secretary's and treasurer's =reports were given.

Special congratulations were given to all first, second and third place winners from our club at State Youth Achievement Day August 26 and 27 in Temple.

Assistant Youth Leader Karen Kaspar announced that the Beseda dance group will perform various places in the upcoming weeks.

Stephanie Roye reported on her first commitment as State SPJST Queen.

She attended the Westfest Labor Day festivities in West and rode in the parade with State King Bryan Becan.

Lenice Kaspar and Marcy Dorotik gave a special program on Grandparent's Day. Members discussed the cake and animal walk the youth club will have for the Fall Festival in Taiton on October 1st. This will be one of the club's major fund - raisers. Members are reminded to donate baked items and be ready to help out wherever needed.

September charity projects brought to the meeting were handed in.

Poems were read and door prizes were drawn. Happy Birthday to Craig Dornak, Crystal Roye, Curtis Dorotik, who all had September birthdays.

Contest winners in 6 - 9 were: 1st Jason Kaspar, 2nd - Crystal Roye, 3rd - Rachel Dluhos. In 8 - 11 were: 1st Valerie Roye, 2nd - Jeanine Dorotik, 3rd - Curtis Dorotik. In 12 - 17 were: 1st - Marcy Dorotik, 2nd - Lenice Kaspar, 3rd - Craig Dorotik. and Games were played refreshments were served.

Robstown Lodge 117 Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, Our monthly meeting was on September 30, 1989 and our Lodge 117 of Robstown met at the Scout Hut. We started out by doing the Vestnik projects and talking about what we have been doing since our last meeting.

Then we talked about the SPJST candy fund - raiser. Everyone was very enthusiastic about it and thought it would bring in a good profit. We then talked about our next charity project which will be baking cakes for the Westwood Manor nursing home.

After the meeting was over, we ordered out and had a pizza party. We all had a wonderful time.

Our next meeting will be on October 14, 1989.

Lodge 47 Seaton Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, On September 5, 1989, Lodge 47 Seaton Youth Club meeting was called to order by President Jason Reese at 7:45 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto were led by Mark Greger.

There were seven adults and one guest, Heidi Brinker, present.

Birthday wishes this month were to Jason Reese and David Kortis.

Door prizes were won by Melanie Koslovsky and Jacob Kamas.

We discussed our "Lock - in," which was held on September 15th. We all had lots of fun and we hope all of our guests did, too, We also had a family night that evening.

We also discussed the bike - a - than which was held on the morning of September 23rd. We raised money for the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas.

Finally, we discussed the fall meeting which was held September 24th. There were many activities throughout the day including a Christmas tree ornament contest.

On October 1, our Beseda groups will perform at the Central Texas State Fair. Practice was set for Wednesday, September 27 at 5:30 p.m. Dancers need to arrive at the Expo Center at about 1:15 p.m. We will dance at 1:30 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m. Afterwards, we held a grandparent's reception. There, we presented our grandparents with plaques, certificates, cake and punch.

I'm sure we all love our grandparents very much; I know I do!

66 Waco Youth Attend District Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, We had our District III meeting on September 24, 1989 at Lodge No. 135 in Ennis; sign - in was from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

We had our youth club meeting after a delicious roast beef - sausage dinner.

President Kevin Dobecka called the meeting to order. We discussed camp and what a good time everyone had.

We are still selling cookbooks if anyone needs them.

New business is our District III trip to Six Flags "Holiday - in - the - Park" on December 2; if you wish, you may come to Lodge 84 in Dallas between 9:00 - 9:30, that day will be leaving there until time to go to the park, so bring a $3 gift if you go to the lodge or be at the park around 4 p.m.

Next, our District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr announced the Christmas tree ornament winners and they are in ages 6 - 9: Brian Tierce (Lodge 66) -1st; Butch Wiggley (Lodge 66) -- 2nd; Alicia Neslony (Lodge 66) -- 3rd. In ages 10 - 12 were: Nathan Tierce (Lodge 66) -- 1st; Meribeth Novak (Lodge 84) -- 2nd; Jesika Tierce (Lodge 66) -- 3rd. Congratulations to everyone!

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned and we went to watch the volleyball tournament.

The first night, we had a campfire and initiation of new campers. There was also a skit put on by some of the LITs called "Romantic Statue."

The next day, we went off into our activities in five groups. I was LIT over Group III. Also, LITs for Group I were Cheryl and Christy Majek, Group II - Crystal Wallace, Group IV Marlene Migl, Group V - Darlene Migl. Activities consisted of crafts (painting T - shirts and making kites), horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, archery and dance.

The party that night was "Backwards Night" planned by the LITs. There were many games that earned points by winning, and the final winning teams were Group I (Crystal, leader) -- 1st place; Group II (Darlene, leader) -- 2nd place; Group IV (Angela, leader) -- 3rd place. Finally, there was a "Best Backwards" contest and a dance.

The next night's party was a "Hoedown." There were games of "People - to - People," "Farmer in the Dell," and "Fire in the Mountain".

Also LITs Marlene Migl, Chris Haag, Crystal Wallace, Keith Kieschnick and Rusty Condra put on a skit called "Mortgage on the Cow." Finally, there was a "Best Cowboy" and "Best Cowgirl" contest, bubble - blowing contest, and a country - western dance.

66 Waco Youth Club Holds Meeting Lodge

The September 17, 1989 meeting of Lodge 66 Youth Club was called to order at 2:20 p.m. by President Jesika Tierce.

Ashley Locke led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were 17 members and 7 adults present.

Guest introduced was Waylan Calloway. New member is Michael Tierce.

The minutes were read and approved.

Brian Tierce gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $9,004.38.

Fundraising plans for this month are clean a highway plan at least once a month.

This month's social will be a Halloween Party at Linden Hall on October 28 at 3 p.m.

Our Youth Leader, Gladys Yates, reported that we will have District III meeting at Lodge No. 135.

The next youth club meeting will be on October 15, 1989 at Linden Hall.

V Camps With District VII

District

Dear Vestnik Readers, From July 29 through August 1, 1989, the youth,* chaperones, and youth leaders from Districts V and VII held an enjoyable camp session together.

The first night began with a swim while the LITs planned the nights' activities. Everyone gathered by the river for our campfire. A new camper from each district came forward to help in the program being presented by the LITs Crystal Wallace, Marlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Angela Clayton, James Pruitt, Keith Kieschnick, Rusty Condra and Michelle Linney; from District V was Darrell Havemann, along with the District VII camper, placed last year's campfire ashes into the fire.

Next, LITs Darlene Migl, Crystal Wallace, Marlene Migl, Michelle Linney, Angela Clayton, Rusty Condra and James Pruitt put on a skit called "Romantic Statue" with the help of a few volunteers. Afterwards, everyone had some s - mores and all the new campers were initiated.

Then the LITs took a few of the younger children for a hike to Chrissy's Crossing, while others went for a swim. The teens and LITs were taken on a scavenger hunt all over from one side of camp to the other.

The next day, after a flag ceremony, which LIT Crystal Wallace was in charge of, and grace conducted by LITs Marlene Migl and Tommie Wallace, we had a short worship service dealing with the Lord's . Prayer.

LIT Crystal Wallace was the leader while other volunteering youth helped out. After we sang a few songs, everyone got into the five groups and headed into the day's activities. Group I consisted of Cheryl and Christy Majek. Group II LIT was Crystal Wallace. Tommie Wallace was LIT of Group III. Marlene Migl served as LIT in Group IV, while Darlene Migl was in Group V. My (Group II) composed of Ben, Joshua, Darren, John, Renee, Kelly, Amanda, Jason, Bryanne, Stacey, Sami and Brett, started out with crafts. Today, we brought our T shirts with us and painted them with sponges ranging from such things as butterflies, hearts and ducks.

Next, we went to dance in the dining hall. On that day, we learned social games, Popcorn, Amos Moses, The Chicken Dance and more; not everyone was willing to participate at first, but the boys soon found that the girls won't bite. We then went on a long trail to the river where archery was being held. Everyone tried at least once, and Stacey even got a bull's eye; that meant a free coke for him, because anyone who got a bull's eye would get a free coke.

Then after lunch, we headed to the creek to go canoeing. I went out with John Buri and Darren Havemann, and I soon found myself doing most of the work. So, I let them go by themselves and I watched. Everyone enjoyed bumping into each other.

Next, we headed to the horse stables. After receiving a few instructions, we were off for our ride.

Some of us had to double up and I rode with Amanda Hermis. We unfortunately got stuck with the one (Candy) who didn't want to move.

Another horse, Rocket, moved in the wrong directions, and Darren Havemann had to get off and ride with someone else.

Finally, our last activity was swimming. This year campers were able to learn and earn swimming cards.

The party planned by the LITs that night was "Backwards Night."

Everyone came dressed as backwards as possible. We started off by putting

BLUE, who passed away on August 27, 1989 at the age of 71. He was a retired driver for 20 years with Strickland Motor Line Company. Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts, on behalf of our members, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MARTHA ELIZABETH STALMACH, who passed away Tuesday, September 26, 1989 at her home in Temple of a heart attack at the age of 79.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 28,at 2 p.m. at the Buckholts Brethren Church with the Rev. Walter Huber officiating.

Burial was in the Rogers Cemetery under the arrangements of Sheffield Funeral Home of Rogers.

Sister Stalmach was born at Wesley, Texas to Joseph and Rosie (Posival) Janes on July 29, 1910. She moved to Buckholts in 1920 and lived in Buckholts and Rogers area most of her life.

Martha married Henry W. Stalmach on March 14, 1927. They moved to Temple in 1963. She was a housewife and worked as a cafeteria worker in Temple schools for many years.

Sister Stalmach was a member of the Buckholts Brethren Church and a member of SPJST Lodge 15 since 1929. She was always willing to help wherever it was needed. We enjoyed working together for many years.

Martha's husband, Henry W. Stalmach, and son, Henry, Jr., preceded her in death in 1974. She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Delphine, Edd, Lad and Ernest Janes.

Survivors include a son, Leroy Stalmach of North Carolina; a daughter, Gardine White of Temple, Texas; a brother, Willie Janes of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; seven grandchildren and ten great - grandchildren.

Pallbearers were nephews Wilbert Gommert, Jerry Stalmach, Douglas Parker, Paul Posival, Raymond Posival and Mark Posival.

BARBARA SEBEK December 24, 1891 July 24, 1989 To Moma Sebek: God in his infinite wisdom has called you from our midst to your heavenly home, and, while we shall miss your pleasant smile, we would not recall you to this world of trials and tribulations.

You have only preceded us for a little while to a better land and there you will wait for us to join you. Death may rob us of those we love, but death has no power to rob us of the sweet memories and of the love that was earnest, faithful and everlasting.

Moma, on October 27, 1950, I was introduced to an unfamiliar but rewarding culture and way of life. It was quite different, in contrast, to my previous existence. On this aforementioned date your son,.

George, and I became husband and wife; consequently, I found myself the new member of a fine Czechoslovakian family. All of the immediate family members were astonished, to say the least, at George's choice for a mate. I was from the big city and he was raised on a dairy farm; I did not speak Czech; I did not know a kolach from a sweet roll and I had never danced a Polka or a Garden Waltz.

Wednesday, October 11, 1989—VESTNiK/15 In a very short time, with patience and understanding, you and Papa Sebek made me feel welcome and loved. I had never witnessed such warmth, devotion and caring comprised in one family. I became so enamored with the Czech heritage, Czech traditions and folklore I even attempted to learn the Czech language.

Papa taught me to sing songs in Czech and often I would accompany him on the organ while he sang. Because of you, Papa, and my husband, George, my life became enriched with happiness and full of love. Papa left us to be with Jesus in 1962. We all missed him very much but we rallied around you that much more. The last 8 years of your life were spent in a nursing home; therefore, George and I arranged our weekends to be with you and care for you. We did this not out of obligation, but out of love and to return to you a portion of that love you had given us over the years.

Now, like you and Papa, we have our own family and have started our own traditions. We have taught our 3 children and, together, we are teaching our 11 grandchildren to be proud of their Czech ancestry and Czech

heritage.

I want to thank you for the many treasures, unbeknownst, you have bestowed upon me during our time together on this earth. These treasures cannot be seen by the naked eye because they are within, and, because they are cherished within they will never tarnish or fade away.

Funeral services for Lewis C. Jez, Sr., were held Saturday, September 16, 1989 in the Sheffield Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. in Temple with Reverend Eugene Kotrla and Reverend Walter Matus officiating. Burial was held in Bellwood Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Vlasta Jez of Temple; one daughter, Mrs. Wallace (Martha) Bartek of Temple; one son, Lewis Jez, Jr. of Temple; two sisters, Annie Kristinek and Julie Chlapek, both of Temple; and six grandchildren.

Fea;ures Ennis Native Chudej Wins TV EMMY Texas favorite "Lonesome Dove" may have been snubbed at the Emmies Sunday, but an Ennis native walked away with an award for his television work.

Steve Chudej, 27, an Ennis native, was one member of a costume crew awarded an Emmy, September 18, 1989, for its work on the television movie "Pancho Barnes."

The movie, aired on CBS, was filmed near Hutchins in an area known as "Big D." The 'film dealt with the life of a female aviator.

Chudej was raised in Ennis and attended St. John School for 12 years.

He graduated from St. John High School in 1980.

He graduated cum laude from the University of North Texas. His degree is in radio, television and film.

16/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 11, 1989 One of the first films in which Chudej was employed as a costumer was the Horton Foote movie "Places in the Heart." Much of this film was shot in Waxahachie, Texas.

Last year, Chudej worked on the Tom Cruise film, "Born on the Fourth of July." This movie has yet to be released. Much of the filming for this show was done in Waxahachie and Venus.

His mother, Agnes Chudej, was present in Pasadena, California, for the 41st presentations by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Chudej's father, Jerry Chudej, said he did not know how good his son's chances of winning were.

"I'm proud of him," Chudej said.

Chudej's son, a radio - television - film graduate of NTSU, also worked as a costumer on "A Trip to Bountiful."

Last May, Chudej came to Texas again to work on a new television mini - series, "Home Before Midnight." It has yet to be aired.

Steve is the son of Jerry and Agnes Chudej of Ennis and Steve lives in the Los Angeles area.

Steve and his parents are members of SPJST Lodge No. 135, Ennis.

Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival Everyone is invited to the 5th annual Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival and State Tarok Tournament to be held Sunday, October 15, 1989 at the Bluebonnet Convention Center, 5602 John Stockbauer Drive, Victoria.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. and are open to the public. A museum with many artifacts of the olden days will be displayed. A Czech baking contest will be held and an auction of the baked goods.

Serving of the Czech lunch will start at 11 a.m. The lunch consists of stew and sausage with all the trimmings and homemade bread, also plenty of homemade chicken noodle soup will be available. There will be pig - in - the blanket kolache and lots of other homemade kolache. The State Tarok Tournament begins at 12 noon.

The Shiner Hobo Band will strike up lots of happy tunes. The San Antonio Czech Choral Club will sing and our own Czech Singers of Victoria will bring out their best. The "Great Czech Sing - a - Long" will be held where everybody gets in on the act.

The Central Texas Sounds will play for an evening of dancing from 4 p.m. to 8p.m.; join us for a full day of fun.

The week of October 13 through 18, the Cinemark IV Theatre at Victoria Mall will present a Czech language film, "The Fireman's Ball," this film will coincide with the local festivities.

The VC Czech Heritage Society met for their regular meeting on September 21st. President Marjorie Matula asked each member to answer roll call with a Czech word or a Czech phrase. Our

Victoria College has 9 students enrolled in the Czech class.

Scholarships are offered to those who qualify. Geraldine Casey received a scholarship during the spring term.

The fall scholarship recipients are Beatrice Klein, Laura Clayton, Bill Sklar and Franklin Elles.

Del Machac was elected as 3 - year director of VC Czech Heritage Society.

The term begins January 1, 1990.

Doris Elsik and Olga Lala presented an interesting program on their recent trip to Czechoslovakia.

A Czech Costume Show and Tell was held to encourage all members to have a costume for the oncoming festival.

Refreshments were served following the meeting by Geraldine Venglar.

Onion-Domed Chapel Is Monument To Texas Man's Faith, Slavic Tradition

By Alma Lee Holman TAYLOR DAILY PRESS TAYLOR -- Kaplicka, That may be a new word for many, but it properly describes a new building in this Central Texas city.

Pronounced kah - PLEECH - kah, it means "little chapel" in the Slavic language, according to Kevin Hannan of Dallas. He is building the small concrete - block structure on land owned by his parents, John and Bobby Hannan, an Old Thorndale Road west of the SPJST Hall.

The building is a copy of a kaplicka from the Czechoslovakian region of Moravia, the birth place of Hannan's great - grandmother.

"I had several reasons for starting this project," said Hannan, who is in the electrical - construction business.

"I'm deeply interested in the folk architecture of Eastern Europe."

"In the villages of Czechoslovakia and Poland where some of my ancestors were born, there are several

outstanding wooden churches and other examples of folk architecture. I also thought of erecting this as a type of monument to the Slavic people and to my own Slavic heritage," he said.

The onion - shaped bell tower of the tiny chapel was placed atop the building earlier this month, but Hannan says there is still much more to be done.

"When the walls are completed they will be covered with white plaster and decorated with Slavic folk motifs, inside and outside," Hannan said.

"The onion dome was built in Dallas by a craftsman from Czechoslovakia. Atop the dome is a three - bar cross which signifies the Christian faith of the Slavic people," he said.

It took the Czechoslovakian buildier 150 hours to fashion the spire and its onion - shaped dome. The scalloped shingles are handcut.

A niche in the back exterior wall is ready for further decoration.

An iron gateway into the little chapel was found in an antique shop.

Hannan, who soon starts graduate work in Slavic languages at the University of Texas, says such kaplickas are commonly found along roadsides and before entrances to villages in Czechoslovakia, Poland and other countries in Eastern Europe, where he has often visited.

"Until recent times it was a common practice in Czechoslovakia and Poland for people to privately erect this type of monument," he said. "Of course, in those times it was a much more difficult endeavor; some families worked for years to save the money and acquire the necessary building materials for such a project."

He says he is in no hurry to complete his plans. He must find the right time, the right artist, the right materials before he takes the next step in the construction process.

The dome belies its seeming delicacy. Hannan estimates its weight at 3,000 pounds. As with the concrete block building, it is heavily braced with steel.

The wooden posts holding the bell tower high above are simply sheathing for steel posts. A constructed steel platform is welded to the steel - braced walls, and the steel in the four posts of the tower is welded to the platform that will eventually be covered with the same type of wooden shingles that cover the onion dome.

"I am building this kaplicka to last." Hannan says. "I don't intend to come back and repair it 10 or even 20 years from now."

To byly pro ni nejkrasnejSi chvilky v mladem ivote. Prochazivala se s naprostou jistotou po htbitove mezi rovy, v2dyt! zde Znala ka2dY kout! Otec neb matka ji zavedli v2dy po jejim prijezdu k novYm hrobinn, Marta si preeetla citlivYrni prsty vyryte napisy jmen nove zemfelch a vtiskla si je k ostatnim do p ameti.
