Correction -- In September 20, 1989 Vestnik issue (the front page cutline) read Leonard Jansa, president of Lodge 160 (as submitted to us) should have read Leonard Jansa, District IV president. *** Sunday, September 24 was a pleasant day to venture out through the beautiful cotton fields in Hill and Ellis Counties while on our way to Ennis to attend SPJST District III meeting and social at the Sokol Athletic Center, where SPJST Lodge No. 135 members were hosting this "Fall" occasion.

The reports of SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, District HI Director Sid Pokladnik and District III officers - committees were informative, well - received and mostly brief, which made the meeting shorter thus leaving time for fraternal activities following adjournment.

It was gratifying to see a large attendance, especially for the morning session with Lodge No. 66, Waco having the largest number of members in attendance. District III and State King Bryan Becan with District III Queen Barbara Reznik were also in attendance.

We will leave the details to be reported by District III secretary as well as others who are charged with those responsibilities. Lodge No. 180, Burleson representatives volunteered to host the District III spring meeting in 1990.

Lodge 66 representation was happy with the results in the cake (adult division) and Christmas tree ornament (youth) contests. Due to another commitment, we had to leave earlier while the volleyball contests were in full swing.

Our gratitude is expressed to Lodge No. 135 hosts and hostesses for serving a delicious roast beef - sausage meal complemented with a large array of pastry, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. *** Sunday, October 8 -- SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor will be hosting their District I fall meeting, along with a social and volleyball tournament which shall take place following their meeting. We encourage all lodges to be represented and enjoy their planned activities. *** On the same Sunday (October 8), the American - Czech Culture Society is sponsoring another Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

The society's purpose since 1928 is to maintain and uphold the Czech heritage of our forefathers so that our future generations will be able to enjoy and perpetuate that heritage as a part of the American way of life.

It's also interesting to know that the members of the American - Czech Culture Society meet throughout the year to encourage and advance the study, enrichment, and commemoration of the cultural heritage of the Czechoslovak people who started coming to Texas in the early 1800s.

The American - Czech Culture Society extends its appreciation to all those who will be assisting in the preparation and presentation of this

American - Czechoslovak Day program. The day's activities schedule is in this issue for your reference. You will notice that all aspects of our Czech - Moravian - Slovak past are represented in the program. We wish their society a very favorable attendance. *** "Figures don't lie" is a familiar phrase, however, figures can be misleading. January 1, 1969, this writer became your editor and has been elected the sixth time for four year terms in June 1988. With that in mind, soon after the convention and realizing that January 1, 1989 would begin his 21st year, this writer decided to look back over the last 20 years or 2 decades (two 10 - year eras of time). In reviewing the 2 decades, 1969 to 1979 and 1979 to 1989, we find quite a difference in our performance as a fraternal benefit society.

In the 1969 - 1979 decade, we sold more and smaller insurance polices, however, almost ALL were new insurance (insurance where the premiums all added to our treasury amount to be invested by our Investment Department in loans, bonds, etc. and a certain amount was paid as premium refund and to the sales representatives as commission).

In that decade, we had acquired what could be termed "a status of sustained, steady growth" with new premiums coming in.

The second decade 1979 - 1989 began much the same way, but began changing. When we introduced Lone Pay Life, Universal Life (Flexible Protector) and Annuity - Plans (which are all good and progressing plans), we had something fraternally beneficial to offer our members and prospects.

When we sell these plans as a new plan, these premiums also add to our treasury to be used for investments with the exception of the commission to the sales representatives and, of course, interest is paid on Universal Life and Annuities.

However, here is where the picture began changing and we refer back to: "Figures can be misleading." If your editor, as a sales representative, calls on a member who has a $1,000 loan value on their present insurance and convinces this member to "cash in" the policy and take out an interest producing plan with the same $1,000, then our treasury has NOT been increased by any amount, and remember there is interest paid plus commission. This has happened in many cases, and it seems that we are "selling" very much insurance when, in fact, we are "rolling over" the amount in our treasury to a newer larger and different plan of insurance.

What we really have to ask ourselves and get answers to is: "What amount of new insurance which adds to our treasury are we selling?" That is why the amount of insurance we call "sold" is misleading, because there is insurance being "rolled over."

Our SPJST Society is composed of many members in many lodges, which has been stressed many times, all having a voice in our Society's affairs; they should have and need to be given correct and factual information at all times. *** Taxpayers have some new protections this year, such as tougher rules about what the Internal Revenue Service can and cannot do to collect back taxes. An IRS pamphlet, "Your Rights as a Taxpayer," is available free by calling the IRS at (800) 424 3676 and asking for Publication No. 1.

Mr. Hlavaty also showed two films after the meeting was adjourned and door prizes were given. The titles of the two films were "Insurance and More," and "Czechs in Texas."

The quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 10, Shiner was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 1989. President Ben Svoboda called the meeting to order. There were 20 members present for the meeting.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Following the pledge, the minutes from the past meeting were read by Secretary Juanita Valenta and approved.

The new business., that was discussed at the meeting included a discussion over local dues which will be decided at the next meeting.

Secretary Juanita Valenta made the announcement about the District VI social being held at Hillie on October 29, 1989. One item that was discussed was the Czech Fraternal Fest being held on October 1, 1989 at Belton County Expo Center. The

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance after which she asked members to remain standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members, especially Joe Zalman, Sr. and Joe Mican who passed away since our last meeting.

Secretary Leona Macha called roll of offices; all officers were present.

The minutes of the previous meeting held on August 21, 1989 were read and approved.

Reports from our officers: Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky regarding upcoming District VI fall meeting and social on October 29, 1989; First Vice President Bennie Reck regarding additional hall rentals; Youth Leader ,Mary Ann Karasek reported about State YAD. A motion by Mary Ann Karasek, seconded by Madeline Shimek to contribute $300 to Memorial Hospital of El Campo. Motion carried.

Members also approved $150 contribution to El Campo Volunteer Department and $50 contribution to Daneoong Volunteer Department.

A motion by Frankie Vanek, seconded by Bennie Reck, to pay the 10 cents for each member in our lodge to defray expenses for District VI fall meeting and social. Motion carried.

Delores Valigura, chairman of committee to nominate "Fraternalist of the Year" along with committee members, Mary Ann Karasek and Leona Macha was happy to present the name of Landis "Dutch" Kopecky for that honor. A motion by Gene Valigura, seconded by Bennie Reck, to accept the committee's nomination of Landis "Dutch" Kopecky as "Fraternalist of the Year." Motion carried. Congratulations, Landis, a well - deserved honor!

Members discussed studying Ways and Means of increasing attendance at our regular monthly meetings for the upcoming year.

No further business, the meeting adjourned on motion by Madeline Shimek, seconded by Mary Ann Karasek. Motion carried.

Rowena Flea Market and Quilt Show all day Saturday, October 7, 1989 at the SPJST Lodge No. 49 Hall in Rowena, Texas.

Anyone who has any items they wish to sell is urged to rent a space in the hall for $5 each.

Quilts will be on display all day and anyone interested in showing a quilt is welcome to display it, because there will be no charge for showing quilts.

Sausage sandwiches, with or without sauerkraut; fresh kolache, other pastries, as well as refreshments will be for sale all day.

All ladies of SPJST Lodge No. 49 are urged to bring pastries to sell for lunch.

The District II fall meeting was called to order by President D.I. Bohac on Sunday, September 24, 1989 at 2 p.m. at Seaton Star Hall.

All officers were present.

A welcome to all was given by host Lodge 47 President George Pavelka.

The minutes of the spring meeting were read and approved by the members.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek, District II director, recognized SL Vice President Bernie Gebala, Publication Committee Member Dorothy Pechal, By - Law Committee Member Lad Zatopek, Insurance Committee Member Ladis Navratil and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky were also recognized.

SL Vice President Bernie Gebala had a few words to say; also Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek spoke.

First Vice President Ronnie Reiger gave a report on the upcoming Volleyball Tournament.

District II Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky reported on the summer camp and the District and State YADs. She also stated that the District II youth were selling cook books from recipes compiled from the District YAD entries. You may contact any youth from the district if you are interested. Our District II King and Queen were also present, King Tom Bowen of Lodge 18, Elgin and Queen Tallahuh Hyman of Lodge 74, Lovelady. Tallahuh gave her winning speech at the meeting, and it was enjoyed by all.

State FAC Frank Klinkovsky reported on the upcoming Fraternal Czech Fest to be held on October 1st at the Bell Expo Center in Belton, Texas.

Everyone was encouraged to attend.

Since we celebrated Grandparent's Day in September, it was decided to honor the grandparents at our meeting. The oldest grandpa was Victor Kunz of Lodge 187; he was 83 years old. The oldest grandma was Albina Mikeska of Lodge 47, who was 88 years old. The grandmothers with the most youth club members present was Lillian Hejl of Lodge 47, Gladys Nelson of Lodge 187 and Lucille Clause of Lodge 187. The grandfathers with most grandchildren in the youth club present were Dan Hejl of Lodge 47, Fred Clause of Lodge 187 and Wilbur Nelson of Lodge 187.

At the end of the day's activities everyone enjoyed a delicious meal prepared basically by Lodge 47 members, the salads and desserts were prepared by the members of each lodge in District II. I would like to thank everyone personally for everything they have done, but that's not possible without leaving someone out. Each person, in attendance, should be thanked for coming out that day, and making it a success. I thank each one for all the work done before, during and after the meeting; without you things would not go as well. Everyone needs to pat himself on the back for a job well done, we know who you are.

Once again, thanks for everyone coming and we hope you had a good time. We will see you on March 18, 1990 at the District IT spring meeting in Taylor, Texas.

Dear Members: Our meeting held Sunday, September 17, 1989 at 2:30 p.m. was called to order by President Mary Alice Langlotz.

The flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Ashley Locke. Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto were led

by Alicia Neslony.

All officers were present.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and approved. She also read a letter from the Supreme Lodge about the District III meeting and volleyball cake contests.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting were read and approved.

The Entertainment Committee will serve hot dogs for our October 15 meeting and members are asked to bring desserts and the committee will furnish chips. The lodge will furnish drinks.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the fraternal activities report. She reported they will have a volleyball contest and a cake contest at the District meeting held in Ennis on September 24th. There will be a

Our youth leader reported that 17 members and one new member were present at the youth meeting. Sister Gladys Yates reported they will be going to Moody Nursing Home for Halloween to treat them with gifts.

They also presented a program for the lodge meeting. Then each grandparent in certificate a received National of commemoration Grandparent Day. At the District III meeting, Lodge 66 Waco had the largest attendance.

Sister Gladys Yates is the new District III first vice president and FAC. From Lodge 66, winners in the Christmas tree ornaments were 1st -- Brian Tierce, 2nd -- Nathan. Tierce, 3rd -Butch Wiggley, plus Alicia Neslony and Jesika Tierce, From Lodge 66, cake contest winner was Georgie Pavlicek who placed third.

Lodge 84 is sponsoring a GOULASH SUPPER on November 7, 1989 beginning at 6:45 p.m., with proceeds going toward the support of the Czech Language Chair Fund and the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund which are projects chosen by the Supreme Lodge to receive our support.

Those of you who are old enough may remember that the Battleship Texas played a big part in World War II and is now in need of vital repairs to carry on its historical importance to the State of Texas and those who served on her. The Czech Language Chair Fund is a project which should be dear to the hearts of all who share the Czech heritage because it will provide a Czech Language Chair to a university in Texas, which will match funds to establish a permanent department to

teach the Czech Language at that university.

We hope that all lodge members will come and bring their friends for this time of fun, fellowship and good food while providing funds for these two worthy projects.

The cost of the supper is $3 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 and will consist of homemade goulash, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Of course, if you would like to contribute additional money toward these funds, you are most welcome to do so.

Come and join us! We may even throw in a surprise or two in the form of special gifts, so you won't want to miss out on an opportunity to enjoy each other's company and perhaps win a prize!

Frank Dvorak was born in Vienna, SPJST folks from around Dallas, Austria on October 8, 1897 and Ennis, Hurst, Mansfield, Fort Worth, immigrated to the Unites States in 1910 West, Grand Prairie, Arlington, and his family settled in East Bernard, Sunnyvale, Crisp, Denton, and all sides of Dallas at our Czechfest and Texas. During World War I, he fought dance, the Sulak Band sounded great in the Czech Unit of the French and kept people on the dance floor. Foreign Legion. He married Frances Nemec on June 4, 1921. District V President Evelyn Mikeska opened the meeting at 2 p.m. with Fred Buri, Jr. singing, "The Stars Spangled Banner," and Helen Hegwood singing "Kde Domov Muj" with Naomi Spencer being the accompanist on the piano. Fred and Helen both sang most beautifully which really gives everybody an inspiration, and gives you a reason to be there.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife, Betty, from the Supreme Lodge were welcomed. The first thing Jerry did was to present President Evelyn Mikeska with an FIC of Years Award. The meeting was very short because this was supposed to be a fun day.

Mrs. Margie Anders won first place in the Quilt Contest, and Mrs. Mary Johnson won first place in the Kolache Contest. We also had the spinning wheel which was quite prosperous.

Our next meeting will be March 11, 1990 at Lodge No. 142, Houston.

Ann and Gus Urbanovsky have one granddaughter, Hilary Markuson and she spent 3 weeks a week at a time during the summer with them. You can imagine how she rates in that family.

She is a sweet little girl, and certainly loved by her grandparents.

Lodge No. 88, Houston

You Should Have Seen Our District V Director Hanus District V had their fall social at SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, Sunday, September 17, with six lodges represented for a total of 172 lodge members. The welcoming address was given by our Lodge President Jerry Ermis.

After the presentation of both flags, the National Anthem was sung by Fred Buri of Lodge No. 142, and the Czech National Anthem was sung by our own songbird, Helen Hegwood. Naomi Spencer of Lodge No. 88 was the accompanist on the piano.

Lodge No. 88 Choral Group entertained the members preceding the dinner.

Guests of honor from the Supreme Lodge were Jerry Mikulas and his wife, Betty.

The invocation by President Jerry Ermis of Lodge 88 was given at 1 p.m. and lunch was served until 2 p.m.

Barbecue beef and chicken with covered dishes furnished by the ladies certainly made for a wonderful meal and, of course, the wonderful desserts topped off the whole affair.

Homemade quilts and kolache made up the competition, and the judging was very difficult because of the fine workmanship on the quilts and the excellent culinary art of the kolache.

Of course, as in all competitions, there can be only one winner, and our hats are off to all who entered. All who competed should hold their heads high for a wonderful display of your exhibited arts.

The first place winner in the kolache contest was Sister Mary Johnson of Lodge 88, and Sister Margie Anders of Lodge No. 88 was the first place winner in the quilt contest. Each received $25 from the Supreme Lodge.

But let's get down to our own District V Director, Brother Louis Hanus. For those who were not lucky enough to have seen Brother Louis in action, you really missed the fun.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 4, 1989 Brother Hanus worked in the "Spin the Wheel" booth, and you would think that he was a right hand reliever just out of the Astros bullpen. He spun the wheel to the equivalent of a 90 mile per hour baseball zooming on its way to the batter, and it is estimated that as a relief pitcher he lasted at least four innings! And believe your FAC, he did not lose his game but, in fact, was the winning pitcher as he took in $84.50 which went to the District V General Fund.

Brothers Dennis Hermis of Lodge No. 142, Orville Simons of Lodge No. 88, and Homer Alexander of Lodge No. 88 assisted.

The District V youth donated all of the proceeds to the District V General Fund from the drawing that they held.

This totaled $35.

The swimming pool was opened for about two hours and the younger members certainly had a cooling and refreshing swim.

If you have never attended a district meeting or a district social it's time that you do so -- don't miss all of the fun.

The next district meeting will be held at Lodge No. 142 in Houston on March 11, 1990.

On Sunday, September 10, 1989 at 2 p.m., our regular monthly meeting was called to order by our President Dennis Hermis. We had 53 members, 6 visitors and 9 children present at this meeting. All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers; all were present. She also read the minutes from the previous month's meeting, which were approved after a correction.

All officers' reports were read by respective officers. Youth Club report was read by Youth Leader Lora Mabry. Keith Kieschnick is SPJST State Runner - up King. Matt Mabry received first place in craft at State YAD. Sick Committee Report: It was reported that Bill Machacek and Mike Kidweller were sick. We hope they are feeling better at this time.

New member for the month is Clarice Heinrich who was signed up by Brother Sidon Tumis, sales representative. Henry Linhart moved to accept this new member, seconded

by Rosie Schilhab. We have one new member.

Visitors recognized were Bill Leitko, Jim Owens, Ron Piwetz, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Danish, Agnes Fabacker and Jo Ann Buri. All visitors are welcomed to our meeting.

President Dennis Hermis personally thanked Mary Ann Kieschnick for presiding as president during this absence at the last meeting.

Under new business: President ennis Hermis asked that everyone be thinking about who the "Fraternalist of the Year" award should go to this year. The fraternalist of the year to be elected at our next month's meeting.

We elected our new Rules and Regulations Committee at this meeting. They are: President Dennis Hermis, Board Chairman Robert Kieschnick, Mary Ann Kieschnick, Sidon Tumis and Martin Kieschnick.

Birthdays for September are: Lora Mabry (September 8), Ed Mabry (September 4), Lulu Gambil (September 2), Robert Kieschnick (September 3), John Buri (September 20), Mr. Mynar (September 9) and Michael Schiewart (September 16).

Wedding anniversaries for September are: Karen and Jim Owens (September 10, 1 year); Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis (September 21, 15 years); Robert and Mary Ann Kieschnick (September 24) and Alice and Bill Leitko (September 17, 49 years).

We also had a very sad announcement. Our longtime social member and dear friend to all of our members at Lodge 142, Houston who will sadly miss the presence of Mrs. Joseph (Amalia) Linhart, age 95, passed away and services were held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg on August 30, 1989.

Interment was in the Praha Catholic Cemetery, Praha, Texas. She is survived by one daughter, Hilda Dieringer; four sons, Henry Linhart, Leo Linhart, Daniel Linhart and Alvin Linhart; 18 grandchildren and 36 great - grandchildren. May she rest in peace.

Capsule drawing of $100 went unclaimed again due to the absence of members Gary K. Stacey and Patrick P. Lahoski. A $100 drawing again will be at our next meeting on October 8th.

Lufkin SPJST Lodge No. 191 held the monthly meeting on September 5, 1989. With President M.C. and Melba being on vacation, Vice President Calvin Anderson called the meeting to order.

The main topic of discussion was the craft fair which is being held October 21, 1989 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There has been some response from crafters

and hopefully this will be a successful event. Food will be served and demonstrations will be going on during the day. Discussion was held on whether to have entertainment or not.

Helen Anderson will be in charge of checking on this.

Among items also discussed was getting a memorial plaque to recognize the receiving of donations in memory of individuals. This plaque will be made up and displayed at the front entrance with a picture light above it.

The East Texas Cloggers will be beginning their beginners' lessons on September 20, 1989. They were originally scheduled to begin on September 13, but had to be delayed a week. The lessons will begin at 7 p.m. and will last for six weeks. The cost is $20 per person for the session. Anyone wishing to participate needs to come on out and try their "feet" at it. It's lots of fun.

As I See It By: W.J. "Bill" Molina Fraternalism was in full bloom on Sunday, September 17, 1989 at Lodge No. 88 in Houston. The occasion was the fall meeting of District V, which was designated as "Family Day." Over 200 SPJST members took time out of their busy schedules to join in the fellowship of the day. The weather, with just a hint of fall, was beautiful.

As I walked into the hall, I was greeted by the all too familiar "Jak se Inas," and cordialities in Czech were exchanged with several people. During the day many conversations were held in Czech, or least started in Czech before slipping into English. This shows that there is still a strong love and interest in the Czech language among our members.

The Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Helen Hegwood filling in for the traveling Tim Kostom, sang several Czech songs during the social hour. Helen also sang "Kde Domov

Muj," the Czech national anthem, at the formal opening of the meeting.

Brother Fred Buri, Jr. sang the Star Spangled Banner. Both were accompanied by Sister Naomi Spencer on the piano. All did a splendid job.

Everyone enjoyed the noon meal, which consisted of barbecue chicken and brisket, complemented by an over - abundant selection of covered dishes and desserts brought by the ladies. If anyone went away hungry, it was their own fault.

The only disappointing thing about the meeting was the fact that only six lodges in District V were represented. I know it is difficult for people to travel long distances or take time out from their busy lives to attend meetings of this kind, but it can be done. Oh, yes, I know that there are all sorts of reasons for non - attendance, but, in my opinion, they are only excuses. It is the responsibility of each and every lodge to be represented at district functions.

Again, I say, it can be done, but only if there is a desire to do it. After all there are only two meetings held each year,

Are we so wrapped up in our own private affairs that we don't have time for fraternalism, particularly that kind of fraternalism that is expressed in social contact with brothers and sisters of other lodges? District meetings are part of our fraternalism. It is without question that the insurance and annuity programs of the SPJST are a large part of our fraternalism, but so is social contact. Are we so caught up in the commercial aspect of our lodges that we neglect the social life of our society?

The next meeting of District V will be held on Sunday, March 11, 1990 at the facility of Lodge No. 142 in Houston. This will be the annual business meeting when the 1990 district officers will be chosen and installed. It may be a lot to hope for, but I would like to see each and every lodge in District V represented.

Representative Recognizes Volunteers From Lodge No. 88, Houston State

Many Lodge No. 88 members do volunteer work at Autumn Hills Convalescent Center in Houston.

Such works consists of helping the social activities' director at the center, with social games, escorting patients to various functions in the Houston area including visits to doctors' offices, musical entertainment, volunteer beauty shop for the patients, sewing, conducting barbecues for the patients, typing and other administrative functions. Communion is also taken to those patients who are unable to attend church services.

These lodge members, with a church group working together, recently received a certificate of recognition from Texas State Representative Ken Vander Voort.

The award is the Texas Health Care Association Volunteer of the Year Award.

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 met on September 11, 1989 at 10 a.m. The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by Vice President Lillie McMillan.

Visitors for our meeting were Mary Pavey and Mary Cecil Krivanek.

The minutes of our August meeting were read by Secretary Clara Marchioni. Then Clara read the lovely card from the Czech Ladies' Circle of Dallas, also talked about the gift from them.

A card was sent to Victor Murphy on the death of her brother, Charley Kratky, a member of Lodge 92. Our sympathies are with all the families.

The Ladies' Circle held their pastry sale at Lodge 92 on their Czech Heritage Day, September 16th. The sale went real well and we wish to thank all the ladies who donated all the "goodies," and the ones who worked in the pastry booth; all went real well

and thanks to Florence Greer for being in charge, a job well done!

I also want to say thanks to the ladies for entering the Kolache Contest. I would like to say that two of the Circle members won. First place winner was Laura Poswal and second place was Anna Leshikar; third place was Maria Janecka, a member of Lodge 183.

The door prize was won by Elizabeth Howard and it also was her birthday. The door prize for the October meeting will be brought by Tuna Meislahn.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Annie t elota, Florence Greer, Elizabeth Howard, Dona Hubenak, Betty Loyd, Frances Simmank, Evelyn Spacek, Mac McMillian, Ernest Dueser, Don Powers and visitor, Mary Pavey. .Hostesses for October will be Frances Simmank, Ida Mayer, Hermina Cihacek and Phyllis Cihacek.

After the blessing, we all enjoyed a delicious dinner.

Recently, Mr. Roger Kolar, president of the Czech Students Association of Texas (CESAT), announced that a scholarship fund in the name of Dr. Henry R. Maresh was established through an endowment by his widow, Mrs. Thelma Burnett Maresh.

The first $2,000 scholarship was awarded this month to Mr. John K. Novak, a graduate student at the University of Texas, Austin. The Dr. Henry R. Maresh scholarship will be awarded annually to college students working in the area of Czech studies, either majoring in the Czech language or working in other degree programs with emphasis on Czech subjects. This scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate students and is offered only to students who are Texas residents or are enrolled in a Texas university.

Dr. Maresh, who died in 1957, was a prominent Houston physician and an avid supporter of Czech ethnic activities and cultural preservation in Texas.

John K. Novak is applying his scholarship award to his study program for a Ph. D. degree in the School of Fine Arts, Department of Music at University of Texas, Austin.

In 1983 he received a B.A. degree in Music Theory and in 1987 he completed the studies for the M.A. degree in Piano with the works of Czech composer Leos Janacek as his thesis. The dissertation for his Ph. D. degree will also concern the works of Janacek.

Mr. Novak is on the organizing for the committee Dvorak Sesquicentennial Festival and Conference which will be held in New Orleans in 1991. At this conference he will also present a paper concerning Antonin Dvorak's works in the world of Czech concert music.

In addition to his Czech language studies at University of Texas, Austin, Mr. Novak attended Czech language summer classes at Charles University in Prague, CSSR during the summers of 1984, 1986 and 1989. When he completes his doctoral program, he hopes to work as a Professor of Music Theory in a college or university with Czech music as one of his areas of specialization. He will also continue to use his talent on the piano in solo and accompanimental capacities.

From The State Youth Director October Vestnik Project THE DOEPPENSCHMIDT FAMILY My thanks to Amy and Brett Doeppenschmidt for this month's Vestnik Project. I know that you all will enjoy reading about the Doeppenschmidts and their family.

Amy and Brett Doeppenschmidt are the daughter and son of Betty and Dwight Doeppenschmidt. Betty and Dwight were married on July 13, 1968 in New Braunfels, Texas.

The Doeppenschmidt name originally came from Germany and as "Toupe Von Schmidt" meaning "the smith who makes pots and pans."

Over the years it became slurred and misspelled and finally became Doeppenschmidt.

Amy and Brett's grandmother on their mother's side is Roma Pape Kaderli, she married Guswin Kaderli on November 22, 1941 in New Braunfels. Amy and Brett's great grandmother was Loni Kaderli Pape.

Great - Grandfather Ottmar Pape proposed to her under a railroad trestle near New Braunfels.

Great - Grandfather was Emil Kaderli. He was born in Switzerland in 1866. He came to the United States at the age of seven on the ship "The Hamburg." He married Minna Kuhn in 1879 and they were ranchers.

Grandpa Kaderli bought the ranch upon his father's death. Grandpa Kaderli once painted some armadillos pink and turned them loose to see if his hunters would notice them. He said no one said anything for a few days and

one night at the supper table, one of the hunters said he just had to tell somebody that he had seen a pink armadillo. The other hunter told him he had seen the pink armadillo on the first day of hunting season, but that he thought everyone would think he was crazy if he said that he had seen a pink armadillo. There are no more pink armadillos in the pasture.

Grandmother Clara Kirmse married Marvin Doeppenschmidt on February 23, 1929. Great - Grandmother Lydia Guenther was married in 1909 to . Egon Kirmse.

Grandfather Marvin Doeppenschmidt worked for the Lower Colorado River Authorities (LCRA) for 42 years and was State President of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

Great - Grandfather Emil Doeppenschmidt was married to Ella Reininger in 1905. Benedict Kaderli, their grandfather's grandfather was bitten on the hand by a rattlesnake and became the first patient in the Nev, Braunfels Hospital in 1898. He was in the hospital 14 days and his bill was $5.

Great - Grandparents Ottmar and Loni Pape farmed and ranched in the area of Hancock Store. Most of this ranch is now at the bottom of the Canyon Lake. Great - Grandfather Ottmar Pape used to make his own homemade beer down in his cellar.

One day he capped some "green" beer. That night when their preacher had supper with them, the caps to the bottles started popping off because the beer had started to bubble again. As they sat talking to the preacher, the bottle caps kept hitting the ceiling of the cellar and making noise like a hail storm. ***

From The District Youth Counselor District IV YAD Held In Seymour On August 5, 1989, Seymour Lodge 73 hosted the District IV YAD at Sacred Heart Church Hall in Seymour.

Youth Leader Henrietta Pavliska and Past DYC Mary Haisler, as well as the other Lodge 73 members did a wonderful job of hosting the event.

Registration began at 1 p.m. with judging beginning shortly thereafter.

Judges for the YAD were Mary Ann Clairday, Mary Hrncirik, Alice Orsak and Janeece Williams, all of Seymour.

A special thank you to all of you for a job well done.

Attendees of the YAD enjoyed playing games and socializing during the judging and tabulation. A light meal was served following award presentation.

REFRESHMENTS! "Grandparents" skit by youth club members. lodge meeting was given a corsage or boutonniere. It was great to see the surprised faces of so many members.

Following the meeting, each youth member introduced their grandparents on stage. They were presented with a special certificate signed by the Governor of Texas and a plaque made by each youth member at a previous craft session. A reception of cake and punch followed.

Each youth was filled with joy and smiles as grandparents filled the hall.

A short skit was performed spelling out the word "Grandparents."

We thank each of the grandparents who made this evening so special.

Prvni ze zminenYch vYroei jsou Murga g ovy narozeniny pied sto peatadvaceti lety. Josef Murga g se narodil 17. tinora 1864 na strednim Slovensku - tehdy zvanem Horni Uhry - y e vesnici Jabrikova nedaleko Bartske Bystrice. (Batiska Bystrica byla 80 let pozdeji, v roce 1944, centrem slavneho Slovenskeho narodniho povstani proti nacistickYm okupantum.) Jelikol Josef se narodil v poeetne rodine chucleho rolnika tak doma nebylo penez na studia nadaneho chlapce. S pomoci mistniho kneze se v g ak nakonec dostal na stredni g kolu a pak na bohoslovi srdce ho Ohio k pfirodnim vedam a k malirstvi. Kdy2 po ukoneeni teologickYch studii se stal kne'zem tak se zapojil do obrozenecke price ye svem okoll. TImto usilim se zahy vgak dostal do konfliktu s mad'arsky smY g lejicimi nadlizenymi. Od napadu k realizaci v g ak vedla trnita cesta ponevad2 tento chudY knez, nedavnY emigrant, si musil vyrabet nastroje potrebne k v9zkumnm takika na kolene v primitivni dilniece na sve fare. Jeho nezlomna vole a houievnatost vgak nakonec zvitezila a v roce 1904 mu byly udeleny dva patenty. 0 jejich prakticke pak usilovala k tomu ye Philadelphii utvorend spoleenost jet financovala stavbu antenovYch sto2ara a prislu g neho zarizeni ve Wilkes - Barre a y e Scrantonu. V zari roku 1905 se uskuteenilo prvni pokusne vysilani, pia kterem Murga g docilil nejen bezdratoveho spojeni se Scrantonem ale i s Brooklynem vzdalenYm vie jak d y e sta kilometre. Zkou g ka se tedy zdarila a cesta k uspechu se zdala otevrena. Koncem roku 1905 vgak velka vichrice znicila antenove sto2ary a tato katastrofa ucinila teeku za dlouholetYm MurgagovYm Kdy2 toti2 spoleenost z Philadelphie zjistila, 2e misto tuenYch zisku bude mit velke vYdaje s postavenim noveho antenoveho systemu tak ztratila o deg pokusy zajem a roze g la se v roce 1906.

Usili kneze Murga g e se tedy rozplynulo jak bublina vnivee ponevad2 nemohl v tomto smeru pokraeovat y e svYch vyzkumech bez finaneni podpory. Tento netispech ho v g ak neodradil na jinYch pokusech v radiotelegrafii, kde dosahl dal g ich deset patentovanYch vynalezu, ktere dodnes jsou dokladem nev g edni tvorivosti a pracovitosti slovenskeho eloveka.

Zaverem prikladam trochu zemepisu a par historickYch faktn o meste Wilkes - Barre a okoll v Pennsylvanii, kde Josef Murga g 2i1 vic jak polovinu sveho 2ivota. Proe mesto Wilkes Barre ma tak neobvykle jmeno? Prvni osada na pozemcich dne g niho mesta byla zaloiena v roce 1769 kolonisty z Nove Anglie (New England) vedenYmi majorem Johnem Durkeem, kterY dal osade jeji jmeno k ucteni Johna vVilkese a plukovnika Izaka Barre, kteri horlive prosazovali zajmy americk9ch kolonii v anglickem parlamentu. Tu byla pak v roce 1776 postavena pevnnstka (Fort) Wilkes Barre k obrane proti Indiantim, spojenYch s Anglieany, Den po Wyoming bitve, 4. eervence 1778, byla tato pevnustka vypalena Indiany a britsk9mi Rangery; k vypaleni dodo znovu v eervenci roku 1784 behem tak zvane "druhe Pennamite - Yankee \T alky," kdy shorelo triadvacet staveni s celkoveho poetu 26 budov. V dalgich letech tu v severovYchodni Pennsylvanii pokraeovaly tizemni problemy je2 zustaly nevyre g eny y e zminene jig "druhe Pennamite - Yankee" valce.

Konfliktni tizemi mezi staty Pennsylvanii a Connecticutem bylo nakonec

srovnano dohodou mezi temito staty a pozemkove pohledavky drivej g ich a novYch osadniku byly potvrzeny statem Pennsylvanii zakony z roku 1799, 1802 a 1807. Mimochodem; sporne tizemi o ktere se tehdy hlavne jednalo bylo predev g im udoli severniho pritoku reky Susquehanna nazvane Wyoming, co2 je zkomolene slovo Indiann kmene Delaware, znaeici "na rozsahle plani." Vlastni tidoli je pouze g iroke kolem 3 1/2 mil a dlouhe asi 25 mil; nazev Wyoming byl v g ak easto pou2ivan pro cele severozapadni tizemi statu Pennsylvania, ktere vlastne bylo cele prieinou dlouhych sporti state Pennsylvanie a Connecticutu. Pro toto tizemi do g lo - jak ji g v tomto elanku zmineno - k bitve nazvane Wyoming zaeatkem eervence 1778, kdy byla podruhe spalena pevntistka Wilkes Barre. Nakonec k tomuto bodu dodavam, 2e stat Wyoming na zapade SpojenYch statu v rozloze 97,914 etvereenich mil ma s tidolim Wyoming v Pennsylvanii spoleene jen sve jmeno.

Neni tee znamo kdo byl prvni co tento stat takto pojmenoval. Vratime li se k Wilkes - Barre tak vidime, 2e tato osada se stala v roce 1818 mestYsem a pak mestem v roce 1871. Die encyklopedie Britannica z roku 1949 mesto Wilkes - Barre mei° v roce 1920 74,000 obyvatelstva (z toho bylo 20% belochn narozenych mimo Spojene staty) a dle vlaciniho seitani lidu v roce 1940 bylo tu temer 86,000 lidi. Mesto Wilkes - Barre se nachazi na severu (severovYchodu) statu Pennsylvanie, odtud do Harrisburgu, hlavniho mesta tohoto statu je 107 mil. Harrisburg (kolem 70,000 obyvatelti) je v jihozapadni easti Pennsylvanie, severne od Philadelphie. Mesto Scranton, kam Josef Murga g , vynalezce nove metody vysilani bezdratovou telegrafii, tispe g ne zaslal prvni pokusnovou zpravu na tarnej g i jeho prijimaci stanici, je okresnim mestem okresu Lackawanna, le2icim na fete stejneho jmena. Obe mesta Wilkes Barre a Scranton le2i v bohate antracitni panvi; die zminene encyklopedie Britannica mesto Wilkes Barre je stiedem teto velmi bohate antracitni oblasti.
