Brother Lad C. Cmajdalka was recognized as the longest - serving officer of SPJST Lodge No. 1 with an outstanding record of 47 years of service to the lodge.

The SPJST Annual Contribution Towards The Teaching Of Czech At Alief Alief Community Evening School for the continuous education, where Czech is now in progress in its 20th semester, is located in the North Hastings High School in the southwest of Houston.

Our SPJST should be highly commended for its support of the Czech language program at Alief and at the other locations across Texas.

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, known by its Czech initials as SPJST also graciously provides free of charge the facilities of its Lodge Praha in Taylor for the

annual meeting of CESAT (Czech Ex Students Association of Texas) and the annual program of the Czech Club at UT (The University of Texas) at the same location. SPJST provided also the facilities at its Supreme Lodge in Temple for meetings of CESAT and the other Czech ethnic organizations.

Finally, it goes without saying, this strongest Czech - American organization in Texas supports many other Czech oriented programs throughout the state.

A new slate of officers was elected to head reorganized SPJST Lodge No. 1 in Fayetteville, Texas. The election took place during a special reorganizational meeting held at Keiler's Restaurant in Fayetteville this past weekend.

Louis Polansky was elected president; Glenn Pflughaupt was chosen to be vice president and Irene Polansky will serve as secretary treasurer.

This week these columns will stress the importance of the upcoming weekends of October pertaining to our SPJST and our Czech Culture and Heritage.

Sunday, October 1st is the SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest in Belton in conjunction with the Central Texas State fair. (Refer to the back page for full and final details.)

All profits of the kolache sales for the duration of the Fair will go to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Remember, to make these efforts work, they need our whole - hearted support.

The next weekend beginning Friday, October 6, 7 and 8 is the opening of CZECH MODERNISM: 1900 - 1945 in Houston at the Museum of Fine Arts. Your editor received a very cordial invitation to attend Friday, October 6, however, it will be very impractical to try to attend due to pressure of work. This program deserves and needs our support for the three months' duration. Our readers and members need to have the knowledge that Czechoslovakia, for 20 years, (1918 - 1938) was known as the most democratic nation in Europe, including France and England, until Hitler invaded it in 1939.

Here is how it is described in the invitation: Czech Modernism: 1900 - 1945 is a multi - media exhibition that is the first of its kind in the United States. It includes a cross section of the visual arts - film, photography, painting, graphics, and sculpture - created in Czechoslovakia during the first half of the twentieth - century. The exhibition will be on view from October 8, 1989 through January 7, 1990.

Czech - Modernish: 1900 - 1945 introduces a lost chapter in the history of twentieth - century art. Surveying painting, sculpture, film, photography, and the graphic arts, the exhibition reveals the evolution of Czech modernism from its experimental roots to its international flowering. These works reflect the radical vision of a new society during the years that Czechoslovakia became the most progressive culture of Central Europe, and Prague was the crossroad for the brilliant and experimental aspects of the avant - garde.

The program for Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8 is as follows: In conjunction with the opening of CZECH MODERNISM: 1900 - 1945 three special programs will be offered in Brown Auditorium Saturday, October 7 at 6 p.m.

Professor Jiri Kotalik, Director of the National Gallery of Prague, will provide an introduction to that museum and its many collections. The National Gallery of Prague is one of the most outstanding art institutions in Europe. Guided by Professor Kotalik's vision, it has grown dramatically over the past two decades, encompassing both national and international collections that are housed in historic palaces and klings across tne city of F',.afn.).e -fessor Kotalik will focus or newest addition to the National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, which will open in the autumn of 1990.

Sunday, October 8 at 1 p.m.

Antonin Dufek, curator of photography at the Moravian Gallery in Brno, describes modernist movements in Czech photography after the first World War. A 2 p.m. Alexander Hackenschmied and Jan Lukas, two of the most significant contributors to Czech film in the 1930s, introduce several of their innovative short films.

Remember to clip out the schedule of Czech films to be shown at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, beginning October 8th submitted by Brother John J. Karas. You are reminded that the Czechoslovak Ambassador Vladimir Houstecky to the United States in Washington, D.C. is scheduled to be in Houston, Texas for the opening of The Film Festival (October 6th and 7th if memory serves correctly.) You are encouraged to support the showing of these films; that is the best and certain way to encourage The Museum of Fine Arts to continue these efforts. ***

Our Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir sent our office a copy of an item which appeared in the Temple Daily Telegram, recently. It seems that one or both parties mentioned are our SPJST members. At any rate, we feel it will interest our readers as printed below: GEORGIA VISITOR PLEASED To the Editor: On August 20, 1989 I was traveling in your area I was several miles south of Waco when .I had a tire go bad -Two women and a 161/2- year - old dog in the Texas heat was frightening to say the least. Just as I started taking my spare out of my car to change the cussed thing myself, one of Texas finest pulled up behind me. Never was I so happy to see those flashing lights!!

Officer Otto H. Hanak had me back on the road in about 10 minutes. I just want to thank him publicly. We deeply appreciate his help and "protection."

Also, I want to say a good word about the service stations in the area (Ever try to buy a tire on Sunday?)

They were all very nice and honest with me. I finally found one at an Exxon Service Center. I have misplaced their card but the owner had a Czechoslovakian name. I was taken care of promptly and with efficiency.

We were back on the road in a short time. My car handled like a new one and best of all I was not "ripped off."

SPJST Lodge No. 1 Holds Reorganizational Meeting A special title of Honorary President was bestowed on Lad C. Cmajdalka who served as president of the lodge for 47 years. The title of Honorary Financial Secretary was given to Edwin F. Kubena for 30 years service in that post.

Appreciation was expressed to the other retiring local officers who served in the following positions: Annie Cmajdalka, secretary treasurer, with 15 years of service, and Minnie Mae Kubena, reporter, with 15 years of service.

Some 25 local members were given information about a number of available options for a comprehensive program of family and fraternal activities planned for the lodge.

Andrew Vavra, an SPJST director from Caldwell, Texas, encouraged the

new group to implement a full program of activities that will be a major asset for the entire community.

SL Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska discussed the many programs available for the Fayetteville area. He spoke on the many benefits available to SPJST members including modern competitive insurance products, the mortgage loan program, the Vestnik and options for a variety of social programs to meet the needs of local members. He said that the SPJST stresses the concept of the family in structuring lodge activities and the organization has a great pride in its heritage.

Lodge Pokrok Texasu No. 1, Fayetteville, has an important historic significance since it bears the number " I ." According to the book, "A History of the SPJST," the lodge was organized in 1897 on the second story of. the J.R. Kubena - Knesek Building in Fayetteville, Texas. It was, of course, one of the 25 Charter Lodges.

The existing lodge building was dedicated on October 2, 1910.

The newly - elected officers are in the process of formulating a program of activities for the lodge. The next meeting was tentatively scheduled for December 3rd, provided there were no major conflicts with that date.

We were very happy to have Brother Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy, as our guests. We also appreciate the extra effort made by him to make the two wheelchair members feel part of the group and not left out. Thanks, again, Brother Leonard.

The meeting, in general, was a little longer than usual because of the extra time needed for the presentations.

Brother Mikeska's report was very enlightening and some of the ideas are being pursued. All other reports were accepted as given and one motion was made and passed by a slim majority.

We wish to thank Brother Mikeska for the donation of several door prizes which were won in order by Sister Alene Kortis, Brother Frank Brdecka, Sister Lillie Nezval, Sister Sophia Kasmir, Sister Frances Haverda,

Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: At this point in time, this writer will start his letter in reverse to his normal.

The activities of the September 10th monthly meeting will be reported first.

SL Secretary - Treasurer Brother Leonard Mikeska came down from Temple to do the honors of presenting 50 - year membership pins to the last group of recipients. In this last group were two members who are confined to wheelchairs and their presentations were made before the meeting. The first presentation was made to Sister Annie (Mrs. Henry) Kubena at her home approximately five minutes from the lodge hall. The second was to Brother Raymond Kubena of Sealy who was brought down by his wife to receive his pin. He was presented his pin at the entrance to the lodge hall by Brother Mikeska. The other 50 - year member, Brother Frank J. Brdecka,

Prior to the Lodge 28 meeting, a 50 year pin was presented to Annie Kubena at her home in East Bernard.

Joe Nezval and his mother, Lillie Nezval, are shown on the stage of the historic lodge home. Their background is formed by an outstanding and gigantic formal garden painted by the elder Dominic Nezval in 1935 for the 1936 SPJST Convention. It is one of the four backgrounds painted by Dominic Nezval.

The regular door prize was won by Brother Albert Lupik.

With the lodge furnishing barbecue sausage from Vincek's, some of the bread and some other items, the luncheon was enhanced by donations of food by Sisters Kortis, Haverda, Brdecka, Kasmir, H. Kelner and Nezval along with Brothers Lupik, Brdecka and A.J. Kelner. Time was the factor that stopped the festive mood for those who had a long journey home, like Brother Mikeska and his wife, the luncheon and fraternal hour had to adjourn.

Here it is the month's end and another monthly meeting due. Lodge Karel Jonas will hold the October meeting on the regular first Sunday (October 1st) at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. Although the agenda will be open, there will be some items needing immediate attention.

The luncheon and fraternal hour will convene right after the business meeting.

A special note about this writer's father which had been overlooked and

partially forgotten. During the latter part of 1929 and through a major part of 1930 Dominic Nezval, this writer's father, worked with Horak Studio of Columbus, Texas where background curtains were being made and painted for the motion picture studios in Hollywood, California. These drops were shipped via railway express. Mr. Horak moved his operation to Hollywood which caused the shutdown of the studio. This writer's father was asked to move with him (Horak) but did not do so.

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, August 13, 1989 at Mr. Gatti's with President Annie Vahalik presiding.

Pledge to the flag was led by Nicholas Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes from the July meeting, followed by reports from Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co Youth Leader Evelyn Holy. FAC Gaye Galetka read correspondence she had received and it was discussed.

Members were reminded of the District VI social and meeting to be held Sunday, October 29th at Hillje with Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje as host.

It was voted not to meet in September due to the Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church picinc on that day.

Committee reports were given and plans completed for Family Day to be held August 20th.

The meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and pizza were served and enjoyed by those present compliments of our lodge.

July, August and September birthdays were honored. Those present were Mary Matula, Annie Vahalik, Patsy Zabransky, Erwin Holy and Hilmer Galetka. Winner of the birthday cake was Erwin Holy. Door prize winner was Frank Matula, Jr. On Sunday, August 20th, our annual Family Day was held at the American Legion Hall with a good attendance. At noon a delicious fried chicken dinner was served. The meal prayer was given by Rev. Henry E. Beseda.

A short program was held. President Annie Vahalik welcomed everyone, followed by the pledge to the flag and a moment of silence for our departed members.

Our guests were District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta and two members from Lodge 88 in Houston, namely, Carolyn Filipp and Celia Koehn.

Erwin Holy was recongnized as having his birthday. Everyone joined in singing "Happy Birthday." A birthday cake baked by his wife, Evelyn, and decorated by his daughter, Marcie Appelt, was presented to Erwin with two lighted numbered candles.

Our 50 - year members and their families were introduced and presented their pins. They included Emma A. Holy, Milton Miculka, Magdaline Mary Vahalik, Frank J. Wojtek and Adela Pohl. Unable to attend were Matilda Gaidusek, Emma Gallia and Steve Satsky. Congratulations!

District VI Director Matt Vanek gave an informative talk to the members. He also presented a check to our lodge for the most increase in membership for a lodge in District VI from July 1988 through December 1988. Thanks to our Sales Representatives Mary Matula, Erwin Holy and Annie Vahalik for their work.

President Vahalik then thanked the Family Day Committee for their work and a job well done; also to Henry Muenster for donating the beer, the ladies for their delicious desserts, those who donated prizes, and everyone for attending plus supporting our lodge.

Attendance door prizes were given.

A clock radio given by the lodge was won by Adolph Marek, Sr., and a can opener to Adela Pohl. A foot stool made and donated by Betty Kahanek

went to David E. Wagner. SPJST items brought by Director Vanek were won by Emmanuel Vasek, Hilmer Galetka, Hermina Marek, Michelle Webb, Alton Chudej and Wilma Wagner.

The youth club project winners were Frank A. Wojtek, Irene Barcak, Jeff Appelt and Matt Vanek.

Wheel of Fortune was played and everyone enjoyed visiting with each other. Refreshments were served.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, October 8th at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m., as usual.

No. 6, Cottonwood Meeting Lodge

Sunday, September 10, 1989 at 1 p.m., the Lodge 6 meeting was convened by President Johnnie Krizan and the pledge to the flag was recited

by Keith Hykel and Kevin Dobecka and the membership. Keith then read the SPJST Motto.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of our last meeting. After a little correction, they were approved.

Treasurer Karen Kroll gave her report, followed by Financial Secretary George Straten's report. He also gave a report on the last Board of Trustees' meeting which was held Friday, September 8 at 8 p.m.

At this time, the president recognized the cooks, namely, Bill and Georgia Skerik who prepared good fried chicken dinner with potato salad, cole slaw, dressing, gravy, pickles, sauerkraut, homebaked bread, tea; also sweets consisting of angel chocolate cake, strudel, pudding, peach pie, cookies and maybe something else because I can't remember it all, all I know everything was good for us before the meeting. A big thank you for the delicious meal.

Willie Mae Schuetz expressed her thanks to all who helped her make strudels and sausage kolache for Westfest and also helped baking them at the hall.

Peggy Dobecka read a letter from State Youth Director Claudette Reese concerning the youth activities.

The vice president reported about the appreciation supper held at Heitmiller Steak House on August 28, there were 58 adults and 32 youngsters who attended. He also announced the second Appreciation Day, which will be held Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m., we will also hold our lodge monthly meeting on that same day; a meal will be served. All the workers who worked at our hall, around the hall, at the picnic, and Westfest are cordially invited to come. This time it will be at our home lodge, a day affair playing games, Taroky, dominoes and whatever you wish to do. Willie Mae Schuetz said that she will have games for the kiddos.

At this time, the president called on Patty (Dulock) Rosales to come to the officers' table to receive her scholarship check from the Teresa Mae Dobecka Memorial Scholarship Fund presented to her by Bobby Dobecka in memory of his sister and on behalf of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Dobecka. Patty will be attending college to become an RN in Dallas, Texas where they live at Grand Prairie now. She once belonged to our youth club when she lived here with her mother, Josie Mae Straten.(She also was our District III Queen of our lodge in 1970; at that time, I was the first

youth leader from 1959 to 1970.) A scholarship was also given to Lanette (Hykel) Gerik at our last meeting which was also presented to her by Bobby Dobecka in honor of his sister, Terese Mae Dobecka.

I still would like to put in a plug about our workers who work hard to make our project a success in our Westfest booth. Those in charge on the committee at the hall were Georgie and Josie Mae Straten baking 576 loaves of bread, peeling 1,000 pounds of potatoes Friday morning at the lodge, cooking them Saturday morning at 5 and also on Sunday so the potatoes would be ready for us at 11 a.m. each day. There were few volunteers helping them. All of this had to be delivered to our booth at the Westfest grounds.

Others who worked at the grounds cooking sausage and warming sauerkraut were Eddie Ray Hrabal, Edward Hykel and his son, Keith.

Saturday and Sunday, at Soukups, David Dobecka and Eddie Ray Hrabal cooked sausage.

Additional ones were doing the harder work by moving the booth from Robert Dobecka's farm, and setting it up at the West fest grounds included Eddie Ray Hrabal, Johnnie Krizan, Larry Mechelle, Robert Dobecka and others. The ones who moved it back again Monday morning were the Dobeckas, Hrabals, Hykels, Krizans, Stratens and Willie Mae Schuetz. After we brought the booth back to the lodge, it had to be cleaned up and be ready for next year. When we arrived to the lodge building Monday morning with the booth, we had visitors (fire ants) which made Robert Dobecka angry; so, he went home right away and brought his small tractor and spray gun and killed all of them. Edward Hykel furnished the poison. A job well handled!

During Westfest, we had 4 - hour shifts, six to eight members working in the booth each day, different ones each shift and some same ones helping out made it easier for us. Robert and Lydia Dobecka were on this project helping out every day wherever work was needed. The weather was nice and hot (100 - degree) the attendance was still good and we did good, too. All the thanks that can be given go to all who helped and we love you for that.

In the kolache contest at Westfest, we had winners again this year from our lodge, namely, Barbara Jean Hykel won first place and Willie Mae Scheutz received second place.

Today's door prize winner at the meeting was Karen Kroll.

The progressive prizes drawn were: First ($10) - Edward Helona, second ($10) - Annalise Theilka of Waco, third prize for $6 was drawn for Douglas Pierce; none was present.

Johnnie and I would like to say "Hello" to all those members who attended the fall class at the First National Bank on September 14 in Hallettsville, Texas; it was nice meeting you. The pork sausage, kolache and rolls were good for our snack, especially the coffee helped for our long drive home which kept us from falling asleep. We left there at 10:30 p.m. and arrived home at 2 a.m.; stopped one time on the way home.

We enjoyed it all.

Let's all enjoy the cool weather now and quit complaining it's hot, hot.

To All Workers At SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood As committee chairman of the workers for Westfest, I want to invite all the workers and their families who had part in any way in helping with Westfest 1989.

There will be a thank you party on Sunday, October 1, 1989; also our lodge meeting will be held at 1 p.m., followed by the youth meeting and then a social with all types of games. A barbecue supper will follow at 5 p.m.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts President Shiller opened the regular Lodge No. 15 meeting by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

She welcomed our guests, E.J. Provazek, Archie Prokirch, James Terry, Gene Marak and Thomas Harwell. We were happy to see you and please come, again.

Mr. Provazek, Mr. Prokirch and Mr. Terry were here on behalf of the Dance Club. After a lot of discussion, it was tabled until the next meeting.

In the November meeting, new officers will be elected for next year.

We need more interest shown in the lodge to keep it going, so don't forget the November meeting and be sure to attend.

No. 47 Seaton Meets

Donations to the Czech Chair and to Battleship Texas have been, made by Lodge 47.

State Royalty was held at Seaton on Saturday before State YAD and also a free dance for everyone to enjoy.

Two circles of youth club Beseda dancers and two adult circles entertained at the Westfest.

The fraternalist of the year is to be chosen at each lodge and submitted to the Supreme Lodge. The volleyball teams will be competing soon.

Congratulations to Dan Glaser for winning first place in the Taroky tournament at Westfest. The Supreme Lodge will be sponsoring a trip to Las Vegas for members. More details from the Supreme Lodge in the Vestnik, soon.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky and Assistant Judy Pechal plus the youth and their mothers made corsages and boutonnieres for the grandparents, also nice plaques and certificates stating each an outstanding grandparent. The youth club had 37 members, 4 visitors and 6 adults in their meeting. Many participated in YAD and Royalty this year. Daryl Kortis and Jason Reese had to relinquish their titles of State King and Duke, respectively; they certainly served the Society WELL for the past year. The Six Flags' trip was discussed and the lock - in will be held Friday, September 15th after the family night social. A bike - a - thon will be held Saturday, September 23rd. The proposed changes to the Rules and Regulations were passed out and they are to be voted on in the October 8th meeting, (a change in date, due to Czech Fraternal Fest at Bell County Expo Center on October 1st).

A birthday will be observed by Sister Elsie Sodek. Wedding anniversaries will be celebrated by J.R. and Dana Glaser, Victor and Lillie Cervenka, Calvin and Dolores Skrabanek. Many, many more years of health and happiness to each named.

Door prize winners were Bob Vasicek and Robert Heese.

After adjournment, the youth club members recognized each grandparent and also presented a short skit. A cake made and decorated by Judy Pechal and a lemonade punch were served to the grandparents by the youth.

Everyone certainly enjoyed being honored in this special way. Thanks to the leaders and the youth!

Dear Brothers and Sisters: President George Pavelka opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5th.

A moment of silence was held for Sisters Lillie Motl Maresh and Bertha H. Simek who passed way in August.

Deepest sympathy to the survivors and eternal rest to the deceased members.

Visitors recognized were Della Marinik, Wm. Pechal, Rudy Helpert, Arthur and Margurite Gersbach, Carmen Skrabanek, D.I. Bohac, Lori Crotty, Andrews and Annie Greger, Walter and Ella Pomykal, Hugh and Evelyn Lynch and Pearline Culp. Most of these were the honored grandparents, but do make plans to come again.

Correspondence included thank you cards from the families of Sisters Lillie Maresh and Bertha Simek for flowers, a memorial from Charles and Linda Schneider in memory of Arnold C. Dubcak, Sr., an invitation to the State Fair in Dallas on Sunday, October 8th beginning at 9 a.m., a letter from District II Secretary Arleen Tschoerner inviting everyone to the District II fall meeting at our hall on Sunday, September 24th starting with registration at 1 p.m. with free drinks, meal and many prizes, also contests on quilts, kolache, Christmas ornaments and a horseshoe tournament, a thank you from Michael Morris for graduation gift, and an invitation to the Czech Fraternal Fest at Bell Lodge County Expo Center on Sunday, October 1st. Our regular monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, September 12, 1989 at 7 p.m. Sixteen adult members were present. Also attending were two of our young members, little Miss Melissa Vallet and Master Derek Wright.

We were happy to have our District V director, Brother Louis Hanus, with us for the evening. Come join us again.

The call to order by President Charlie Matcek was followed by recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. All officers were present for roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the August meeting. The minutes were accepted as read.

Correspondence received and read by Secretary Werner included a thank you note from the Edwin Miller family and a letter to members from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

President Lesikar's letter was an invitation to attend the first annual Czech Fraternal Fest on Sunday, October 1st. This fraternal fest will be sponsored by SPJST in conjunction with the Central Texas State Fair to be held on October 1st in Belton, Texas at the County Expo Center. A special invitation is extended to area accordian players.

Both Secretary Werner's financial report and treasurer reports were accepted as read by them.

A detailed report of Special Fund activities for the month of August was presented by the fund chairman, Brother Gilbert Walzel. His report was accepted as read.

Members on our sick list were Brothers Raymond Stup k a and Herbert Nowotny. Sister Vlasta Nowotny reported that Herbert is now back in Needville at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II. There was no old business on the agenda. New business included minor price changes in certain food items sold from the lodge kitchen, and a report from the Entertainment Committee that plans are in the making for a New Year's Eve dance.

President Matcek read a letter from the Home Office, offering training and guidance to the Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC). The office of the FAC is usually -- but not always -- held by the vice president of the local lodge.

Director Hanus praised the sales representatives of Lodge 81 on the fine job they have done during the past year. A seminar for district sales representatives will be held at Lodge 81 in Needville on Tuesday, September 26, 1989.

It was decided to have a fall cleanup of the lodge hall in the near future by members.

Melissa Vallet and Derek Wright drew names of the following door prize winners: Adolph Macha, Mary Werner, Darlene Blinka and Louise Newman.

Our next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m.

Lodge 84 is sponsoring a GOULASH SUPPER on November 7, 1989 beginning at 6:45 p.m., with proceeds going toward the support of the Czech Language Chair Fund and the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund which are projects chosen by the Supreme Lodge to receive our support.

Those of you who are old enough may remember that the Battleship Texas played a big part in World War II and is now in need of vital repairs to carry on its historical importance to the State of Texas and those who served on her. The Czech Language Chair Fund is a project which should be dear to the hearts of all who share the Czech heritage because it will provide a Czech Language Chair to a university in Texas, which will match funds to establish a permanent department to teach the Czech Language at that university.

We hope that all lodge members will come and bring their friends for this time of fun, fellowship and good food while providing funds for these two worthy projects.

The cost of the supper is $3 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 and will consist of homemade goulash, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Of course, if you would like to contribute additional money toward these funds, you are most welcome to do so.

Come and join us! We may even throw in a surprise or two in the form of special gifts, so you won't want to miss out on an opportunity to enjoy each other's company and perhaps win a prize!

Dear Members: We needed more members at our meeting last Monday; where were you?

Minutes of the last meeting were approved and correspondence was acknowledged from Supreme Lodge SPJST, RVOS and District III, also Lodge 84 Coordinator Ida Schultz read the invitation to the SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest in Belton.

The committee reports were by: Entertainment -- President Cheri Petr reported on dances, rentals and our Czech Fest which was a great success and she thanked all who helped making the day it was.

Hall Rental -- Brother Emil Petr Special Committee -- Sister Evelyn Salac Youth Leader -- YL Bessie Petr reported on State YAD; also she said Beseda and children dances for the Czech Day at the State Fair are being practiced. The youths were asked to entertain at the Texas Fraternal Congress and the SPJST Fest.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council -Sister Bessie reported on money raised and divided to the Czech Chair, Battleship Texas, and Texas Children's Hospital.

Wednesday, October 11 -- Dallas Ennis Fraternal Council meets at our SPJST Lodge 84, with WOW as hosts.

Wednesday, September 27 1989—VESTN1K/7 September 25 -- The Czech Club was the location for the Czech Culture Society meeting.

Sister Ida Schultz reported on the Fraternal Coordinators' meeting hosted at our lodge -- ideas were exchanged successfully.

Brother Salac thanked all who helped with the cleanup of the bar and kitchen, namely, Lillie Jarma, Carlyn Ondrusek, Charlie and Wanda Petr, Joe and Bessie Tydlaska, Randy and Rose Scott, Emil and Bessie Petr, Oldrich and Bulah Horak and Evelyn Salac. Also thanks to Sister Bessie and Emil Petr for serving barbecue to all the workers afterward, even Brother Ron Coker enjoyed the meal who was there to check the ice maker, thank you to two brothers, Charlie and Emil Petr for plumbing work under the sink, Brother Salac mowed the grass and Brother Emil Petr trimmed the hedges.

Many thanks I might add, it was good to see Brother Adolph (who has not been feeling that good) at the meeting last night.

Sunshine Committee sent get well cards to Sister Bessie Houpy, Mildred Chervenka, Bertha Malik, Annie Zapalac, Mary Mancell, and Brother Alan Baleja; a sympathy card was sent to Annie Blue on loss of husband; a baby card to Gary and Susan Cox -- a baby girl.

Warren and Gladys Havemann and Eugene and Edith Muzny from Plum, Texas, went to Louisville, Kentucky for the 80th Infantry Division of World War II reunion for 31/2 days at the Galt House Hotel. Everything took place in the Grand Ballroom, except on Friday they toured the Fort Knox Army Base, Patton Museum and Fort Knox Gold Depository. This was their first reunion they made and it was the largest. There were 1,149 veterans there and 3/4 had wives. Going there they went by Graceland in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee and coming back they went by Branson, Missouri.

Personal Comment: Gladys and Warren are active in our Lodge 88 and are the grandparents of the Havemann children who are so active in the youth club, and the parents of Donald and Ronald Havemann (twins) and their wives, who are the parents of the Havemann youth.

On September 9, a group of us went to a wonderful dance at our lodge. We enjoyed the evening so much. Bobby Layne, a 12 - piece band from Nebraska and a beautiful little blonde vocalist furnished the music. All of a sudden the vocalist announced that Chairman Harley Cox would join her -- so they sang "You Are My Sunshine." We had no idea Harley could sing so well; that wasn't all, then they danced on the stage. All in all, we had a great time watching the unusual performance.

The Traditional Czech Day is on October 29, 1989 at Lodge No. 88, a big day that will be with a lot of excitement. As I mentioned before, mark your calendar. Instead of turkey and dressing we'll have a Czech dinner consisting of beef and pork roast, knedliky (dumplings), sladke zeli (sweet - sour) cabbage or kraut, plenty of gravy and homemade rolls. We will

also have sausage for a backup. The price of the Czech dinner is $4 and $2.50 for children. The Birthday Club will have a pastry booth and we will appreciate pastry from the SPJST members, too. If you need some information about the pastry, call Lillie Spies at 695 - 5243; you might want to help her with this project.

Don't forget our Men's Club that day. They have a drawing. The tickets are 3 for $1, and they have so much to offer -- 1st prize - $100; 2nd prize $75; 3rd prize - $50 and the 4th prize $25. Be sure and support them because they do a great deal of fraternal work throughout the year.

On Czech Day, also the Choral Group and the Lodge Czech Concert Orchestra will perform. The Mayor's Proclamation will be read, Supreme Lodge officers are invited, and at 5 p.m. there will be the Parade of Costumes, and the dance with Vrazels will follow. There will be a charge of $2 for the dance unless you've eaten lunch with us, then the dance is free.

Our District V meeting was a real success. We'll send in more about this day next week.

Heritage Day At Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth

A day that many members and friends will remember for quite some time 'which was perfect weather and there were several things going on September 16, namely, the TCU and A&M Parade, (the game later that night was held) as well as the Mexican Independence Celebration in the parks, but the best was our Czech Heritage Day celebration.

Doors were opened at 12 noon and the catering company had the food ready to be served, which was served buffet - style and you could help yourself with the very good food.

Helen Kubala was in charge of having delicious sauerkraut and dumplings.

The pastries were extra which was under the supervision of Lodge No. 92 ladies, there were any types of pastry you desired. They served pastry all afternoon and still had some close to the end of our dance at midnight.

A little something about the way all committees worked; they were assigned at different hours and that way no one had a hardship and also could enjoy the evening. Things went so smoothly which was a pleasure to show everyone a nice time.

There were friends from all over Texas, namely, Maypearl, Ennis, Megargel, Arlington, Crowley, Houston, Granbury, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Dallas, Pilot Point, Wichita Falls, Grapevine, Azle and other places that I might have overlooked.

To these friends and members, we sincerely thank all of you for coming to celebrate the Czech Heritage Day with us at our lodge.

Members from other SPJST Lodges 84, 154, 180 and 183 as well as KJT from Dallas were also among the attendance. Some of the members who haven't been at our lodge for a few years were glad to be with friends who haven't seen each other for several years.

I will congratulate all the ones who served on committees and you can be proud of the nice turnout. We are only sorry that, if you didn't attend, you

missed something, that was a beautiful occasion.

The Jodie Mikula band had to be the best ever. The Texas Dutchmen were not to be outdone, both bands really kept the people dancing; also during the chicken dance, the Texas chicken made its appearance on the floor. I suppose it was supposed to be laying eggs, but it was only candy given to all dancers (performing this number) and also around the tables. The chicken made a big success hopping around loving, children and adults. (I don't think it was one of McDonald's chickens. I think that Josephine feeds it during the week.) Thank you, Frank, for something extra to make us all laugh and smile.

There was the kolache contest and several were entered but only three were winners. First place went to Laura Posival, second - Anna Leshikar and third - Maria Janecka. Thanks to all who entered because all of you were winners for making the good Czech kolache. I hope the younger generation will continue to make them; it has been handed down from generations.

Then came time for the costume judging; the authentic Czech kroje (costumes) participants paraded around the floor. Rose Steinman won first place, and second - Maria Janecka. The Czech - American kroje (costumes) were won by: Frank and Merel Kovar, first place; Bill and Louise Kucera, second; the youth kroj (costume) was won by Cindy Jones.

Thanks to all who came in costume because you all were very beautiful and should be proud to wear them any time when there is some type of celebration.

Next came the big event, the accordian contest. There were about 18 or so contestants with button and piano - type accordians. It was very exciting to see so many accordians at one time on the floor. Before the contest they all got together and played a few numbers. There were accordianists from other countries than United States, namely, France and Mexico. (The music without an accordian doesn't seem complete.) We congratulate all who entered in the contest, your music was well accepted.

The winners were: First place (button accordian) - Joe Sykora and Second Walter Greener. First place (piano type accordian) - Muriel Francois and Second - Ernest Mendoza. The best overall was a young lady, Muriel Francois, from France. All the contestants were very good and I'm sure the judges had a hard time selecting winners. Everyone really enjoyed hearing each one play.

With such a nice turnout we surely will have the Czech Heritage Day next year again. Many thanks to all members and friends who helped make this a wonderful celebration. Also thanks to the committees who had things in order, and our thanks to the judges who were selected and made a selection of good winners. Good health and happiness to each of you.

President Bayer called the meeting to order on Sunday, September 10 at 4 p.m. Pledge was led by Stacy Bielefeld.

Lodge 107 had two winners at State YAD, namely, Jason Ciomperlik in

Hobby Kits and Stacy Bielefeld in Foods.

Final plans were made for District VII fall meeting on October 22nd. A light lunch will be available at the hall.

Fraternal activities coordinator is in charge of games and contests. Robert Suggs will be in charge of entertainment for the youngsters. The hall will open at 11 a.m. Games are to start at 1 p.m. More will be coming on these activities from the fraternal activities coordinator.

Detailed plans were also made for the Peanut Festival which is to be held on October 12, 13 and 14th.

At our next meeting on October 8, we will start at 10:30 a.m. and make peanut brittle until we have enough made; some will also be made on Saturday, October 7 in the afternoon, so, anyone not busy Saturday afternoon may report to the hall about 2 p.m. and we'll do some cooking then to make our Sunday lighter.

Don't forget your pots, potholders and wooden spoons, the hall has some but not enough for everyone.

Lunch will be furnished by the lodge on Sunday; come out and enjoy the fellowship as well as help so that a few don't have to work so hard.

Many helping hands will make the task easier.

The next regular meeting of the lodge is scheduled for Sunday, October 15 at 4 p.m. The meeting will be followed by dinner at 5 p.m. with the members of Sokol Zizka.

The Texas - Czech Beseda dancers performed again this year at the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio. But this year was special for us because it was the first time that our new youth club members performed with the group. They were Julie Vrla and Jennifer Brown. You did a great job girls! We were also pleased to have a new couple make their debut in San Antonio, Kelley and Patti Brown.

The dancers are scheduled to perform for the first time at the Yukon Czech Festival in Yukon, Oklahoma on Saturday, October 7th. We're looking forward to that event.

Also, don't forget we have our "Campout" coming up October 27, 28 and 29 at Fort Parker. All members are encouraged to come. It should be really a fun "family" time. Entertainment Chairman Sister Lucille Dlugosh was absent. Sister Annie Stryk thanked Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fajkus for the coffee they donated.

Czech Reporter Sister Miroslava Phelps was also absent due to the *14.400414° hospitalization of her husband.

Grace and Emil Rolm' celebrated their Brother Mares explained the situation 48th wedding anniversary. and was hoping to help Sister Phelps.

Members reported that Sister Mary Blanar had been transferred to the Normandy Terrace Nursing Home.

Sister Mary Kostelnik was still recuperating at the Village on the Heights Nursing Home. It was also reported that Sister Marcella Kleprlik had been in the hospital but was now back with Brother Jaroslav in the nursing home. Brother Alfred Kalmus reported that Sister Henrietta Kalmus was still being cared for in a private home. Sympathy was extended to 11111 Brother Don Netek whose sister and two brothers - in - law had died in the Alfred Kalmus celebrated his birthday last month. Members were also asked in August.

Our September 5th meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence for our departed members by Trustee Chairman Joe Hurtik. He then proceeded with the Board of Trustees meeting.

President Louis Grochoske was delayed getting to the meeting because of an accident, a ruptured blood vessel. Mydell, being a nurse, knew what to do. He was able to be there in time to hold the regular meeting.

Minutes from our August meeting were read by Secretary Julia Dueser and approved as read. Other reports were all good.

Suggestion was made that we should honor each high school graduating member. After discussions, it was decided to table it until our next meeting; then we will decide and vote on what we will do. Louis and Mydell Grochoske said they always give a gift to the graduates which is personal; this other will be from the lodge.

Sunshine Committee Mydell Grochoske reported sending a sympathy card to Arnold Vrla on the loss of his wife and a get well card to Trudy Hoerig who has been back in the hospital since then, but is home now. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

We want to welcome two new members into our lodge; one transferee, Frank Novacek and Lorene Harrell. (She is the daughter of Ida Mayer who has been a member of the SPJST for 68 years. She joined at Lodge 24, Cyclone and has since transferred to Lodge 180). We hope these two new members enjoy all the activities at our lodge.

A Nominating Committee was elected because it's that time of the year again, it doesn't seem possible.

They are Joe Hurtik, Sr., Julia Dueser and Bobby Smajstrla.

The next meeting will be October 3rd at 7:30 p.m. and Board of Trustees meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Anna Johnson reported on cards sent and we just heard Millie Bell had a heart attack and is doing better.

Darlene Fox with Hugeley Hospice gave a nice talk and explained how the Hospice helps everyone who contacts them. Donations of any kind are appreciated.

Anyone interested in a cookbook, they are $5 and make a nice gift.

The Fandangels of Saginaw will entertain us at our meeting at 11 a.m.

We hear they are great.

Our Thanksgiving dinner will be Wednesday, November 8 (notice date change) turkey and all the trimmings, with dessert and drink; adults, $4 and children, $2 for ages 12 and under.

Families with children at home are free.

Trlica Kopecky Reunion The 35th annual reunion of the Trlica - Kopecky descendants will be held Sunday, October 8, 1989 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville, Texas. We had a well attended camp -- one of the best. Campers and chaperones for a total of 107.

We arrived at Camp Val Verde on Thursday, July 20 at 11 a.m. Lunch was ready for us at 12 o'clock.

During the rest period everyone settled down where they planned to stay for the next three days.

It's always great seeing your friends whom you enjoyed at the last camp, finding out who your leader is going to be, and in which cabin you are going to be.

After that, we followed a schedule of planned activities such as swimming, canoeing, archery, crafts and horseback riding.

The evening activities were also well planned, namely, movie time, a neat scavenger hunt, penny carnival, party, dress up contest, skits, hayride and a balloon lift - off.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth News Dear Members and Friends, The youth club held their meeting on September 10 after the Lodge 6 meeting. The attendance was fair and we had three visitors and three social members. All of you come back.

The youth club made sausage kolache and strudels every Monday and Friday nights in August. I want to thank everyone for helping us with baking or whatever you did to help out.

On August 8, the youth club had their swimming party at West Pool with eats and drinks. They had a good time.

August 27 was State Youth Achievement Day in Temple. Our youth club had two members who entered their crafts, namely, Kevin Dobecka (a rocking horse) in Constructed Items and in Hobby Kits (a birdfeeder); Keith Hykel in Needlecraft had a picture and in Constructed Items, a birdhouse. He won second place in both entries. We are proud of our youth entering in District III and State YADs. The youth did pretty good at the Westfest booth during September 2 and 3 weekend, they also had a float in the Westfest Parade. I want to thank the ones who helped us work on the float which was a lot of fun working on it.

On September 8, we enjoyed having funnel cakes, ice cream and games.

We are going to work on Halloween items and soon on Christmas items, which is around the corner.

On October 1 will be our Lodge 6 meeting at 1 p.m. and youth club meets after the mother lodge meeting.

After both meetings, there will be games for young and old. The youth club will have free games, then there will be supper for everyone who worked for Lodge 6 and youth club when we held our yearly projects, so please come for the meeting, games and supper.

Don't forget the cakes for West Rest Haven on October 4th.

40 Youth Participate In YAD Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, On August 26 and 27 members of Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje Youth Club attended State Royalty in Seaton and State YAD in Temple. Members attending were Darren Dybala, Jared Dybala and Kim Kacal.

Saturday evening Darren and Duke Jared competed in the Royalty Contest. Even though they did not win the titles of State King and State Duke, they did an excellent job of representing our lodge.

On behalf of Lodge 40, I would like to congratulate District VI Queen Stephanie Roye and her Duchess Crystal Roye on winning state queen and duchess. They did an excellent job of representing their lodge and our district and I am sure they will continue to do so as they represent the SPJST throughout the State of Texas.

Good luck this year to both of them.

On Sunday, our lodge had several entries in craft and one entry in Talent.

Kim Kacal placed second in 15 - 17 Individual Talent with a dramatic reading entitled, "Don't Let Go." She also placed second in each of the following 15 - 17 craft categories: Handicraft, Needlecraft, Hobby Kits, Science and Educational.

Darren Dybala placed second in 15 17 Foods.

I would like to thank the adult members of our lodge who took the time to attend State YAD and support our youth. They are Mrs. Leona Macha, Mrs. Dora Lee Kopecky, Mrs. Pat Dybala, and our youth leader, Mrs. Mary Ann Karasek. It means so much to have friendly and familiar faces in the audience supporting you.

Dear Readers, The September 10, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 2:45 p.m. by President Steve Bruggman.

Jason Harvell and Adam Bruggman led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

Secretary Kristie Waits read the register. Present were 15 members and 2 adults. Guests introduced were Shawn Ashcraft and Stephanie Lambert .

The minutes were then read by our secretary and were approved by the membership.

Carl Macek gave the treasurer's report and the balance was $603.20 at the end of the month. Dues are $1 and if members have not yet paid, then please do so at the next meeting.

The leaders and members discussed plans for an October social. The social will probably be October 29th. We will either go skating, bowling, or to the movies and then we will eat pizza.

Official plans will be made at the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:15 p.m. We then had a supper with the mother lodge.

"Happy Birthday" to Michael Harvell on September 7th.

Door prizes were won by Janet Macek and Jason Harvell.

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 160 Youth Club was held September 9 at the Wall Fire Hall.

Ryan Jansa led the pledge and Todd Schwartz led us in the prayer for DYC Susan Bohnenberger.

There were ten members and three adults present.

Members were reminded that the Christmas Ornament Contest entries are due September 23rd and the T shirt Contest entries are due November 23rd.

All of the members signed a get well card for Susan and we also sent her flowers. We wish you a quick recovery Susan and we are remembering you in our prayers.

On Sunday, September 10, we honored our grandparents on Grandparent's Day with a ham dinner at the Wall Fire Hall. After the meal, we presented a special program for them and then we presented each of our grandparents with a certificate from the Governor.

Expression Of Sympathy The members and officers of Lodge No 9, Snook would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of RICHARD R. VAJDAK, of Snook who died on August 6, 1989 in a Temple hospital.

Brother Vajdak was born August 6, 1929 in Snook. He was the son of Henry and Annie Vajdak. A lifelong resident of Snook, he was a farmer and rancher who enjoyed hunting. He was a member and elder of the Snook Brethren Church.

He attended school in Academy but graduated from Snook High School in 1947. He was a member and president of Lodge 9 in Snook. Mr. Vajdak was also secretary for the Burleson - Lee Soil and Water Conservation District and had served for 27 years. He received the "Outstanding Man of the Year Award" in 1965 for being the best young conservation foreman. He received the Goodyear Award in 1988, also from the conservation district.

Brother Vajdak was married to Mary Ann Jakubik on October 1, 1949 in Caldwell by Rev. Henry Beseda, Sr. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Vajdak, and a nephew, Bobby Faust.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Vajdak of Snook; his mother, Annie Vajdak of Snook; a daughter and son - in - law, Pat and Robert Collins of Snook; three sons and daughters - in - law, Betty and Sandy Vajdak, Kenneth and Missy Vajdak,

Benny Ray Sebesta, Kenneth Vajdak, Bobby was born January 21, 1950 in Kirk Macik, Mark Jakubik, Bruce Dallas. He graduated from Connally Faust, James Faust, Jimmy Joe Svec, High School (Waco) and attended Vincent Svec, John Holland, Richard Texas A&M University. He joined the Sebesta, Leo Macik, David Welch, Waco Police Department in 1970 and Michael Anderson and Ronnie had attained the rank of sergeant. He Anderson. was a graduate of the FBI'Academy in Virginia. He was a member of SPJST May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

In Memoriam AMALIA LINHART died Sunday evening, August 27, 1989 in Autumn Hills Nursing Home in Sugarland at the age of 95 years and 21 days.

Rosary was recited by Rev. Richard W. Filice at 8 p.m. August 29 in Schwenke - Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg.

Funeral Mass was held August 30 at St. Rose of Lima with Rev. Richard W. Filice, celebrant. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Praha, Texas under the arrangements of Schwenke - Baumgarten Funeral Home.

Acting pallbearers were her grandsons Alvin J. Linhart, Edwin Bender, Jr., David Smith, John D. Linhart, Henry Gene Linhart and Steven Linhart.

Mrs. Linhart was born August 6, 1894 in Freyburg, Texas to Joe Sbrusch and Anne Grohman Sbrusch.

She married Joseph Linhart at Praha, Texas on October 26, 1914. A resident of Fayette County for 80 years, she also lived in Houston and Sugarland for the past 15 years.

Although the entire three generations of her family are SPJST members, Mrs. Linhart enjoyed being an active social member of Lodge Stefanik No. 142, Houston while her health permitted. She was a housewife and Catholic.

Her husband, Joseph Linhart and two sons, Albert and Herbert Linhart preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Hilda Dieringer of Rosenberg; four sons, Henry Linhart of Richmond, Leo Linhart of Houston, Daniel Linhart of El Campo and Alvin Linhart of - 'Sugarland; 18 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

Sister Tobola was a resident of Blessing, Texas since 1945. She was born on April 6, 1912 in Macon, Georgia to Grover Cleveland and Inez Estelle Fields Baker. She was a registered nurse for 15 years, later she operated the "Tobola Snack Shop" for 15 years in Blessing.

A rosary was recited in St. Peters Catholic Church on September 12.

Services were held Wednesday, September 13 at St. Peters Catholic Church. Burial was at St. Peters Cemetery, Blessing.

Survivors include her husband, Victor Tobola of Blessing; one son, Martin of Blessing and two grandchildren.

She was a member of the Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and member of SPJST since 1946.

Pallbearers were Mike Tobola, Mark Tobola, Edward Jurica, Mike Black, Gregory E. Dukes and Herman Jurica.

She was born in Yorktown, Texas, the daughter of the late Jim and Jennie Mateiek. She finished high school in Yorktown in 1927 and University of Texas in 1933. Formerly a school teacher, she taught two years at Kostoryz School in Corpus Christi and two years high school in East Bernard.

In 1944, after working three years in the War Department in Washington, she served in the American Red. Cross as a hospital staff aide at a temporary army hospital on Oahu, Hawaii.

Following her employment with the American Red Cross, she was employed by the Civil Service in Tokyo, Japan. After her marriage to Louis Robertson in 1949, her husband's work took them to the major cities in Texas, New Mexico and Utah.

She was an active member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church many years, having been a member of the choir and leader of the Esther Circle until quite recently. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 155, receiving her 50 - year pin in 1987. She was a member of the Austin League of Women Voters many years, P.B.O. Does 103, Damen Kegel Varien, Austin Women's Federation, and the former Capital Study Guild, Mrs. Robertson is survived by her husband, Louis Robertson; brothers in - law, sisters - in - law, many, nieces, nephews, great - nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Awards Micek Scholarship CESAT

Mr. Roger Kolar, president of the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) recently announced that the $2,000 Micek Scholarship for the 1989 - 90 academic year was awarded to Mr. Kevin Hannan of Dallas, Texas.

Mr. Hannan, 35, formerly in the electrical construction business, and now a graduate student at the University of Texas - Austin is entering a program to obtain a Master's degree in Slavic linguistics with the Czech and Slovak languages as his major field of study. His goal is to obtain a Ph.D. degree in this field and then to apply his studies in teaching, writing and research in the Slavic languages.

He has written numerous articles for various publications on the language, history and culture of Czechoslovakia and the emigration of Czech Moravian families to the United States. During the past year, he began the construction of a small chapel on his parents' farm in Taylor as a monument to the Slavic people and his own Slavic heritage.

The Micek Scholarship is named in honor of and funded by an endowment of Dr. Eduard Micek, an early and long - serving educator at the University of Texas and tireless promoter of Czech studies. It is awarded annually by the Czech Ex Student Association of Texas (CESAT) to a student (undergraduate or graduate) working in areas of Czech studies, either majoring in the Czech language or working on other degree programs with emphasis on Czech subjects.

Garner Signs With UMHB BELTON, TEXAS --- Tera WaNe Garner of Salado, Texas, signed a letter of intent to play basketball with University of Mary Hardin - Baylor in Belton.

Tera, 5'9", was a starter for two years in Salado and averaged 12 points per game with 4 assists. She was also the leading 3 - point shooter. Tera was selected First Team All - District for two years.

"Tera was our defensive stopper," said Dennis Cabannis, basketball coach of Salado.'

Tera is the daughter of Captain Retired Wayne and Mollie Garner of Salado and the granddaughter of Mr. Tommie H. Lostak of Danbury, Texas. She is also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 139, Danbury.

At Ole Miss, he will teach courses in the philosophy of science, cognitive science, and formal logic. Ice Hockey Revive In Houston?

HOWE CERTAIN HOUSTON GOOD PLACE FOR NHL [The Houston Post, Aug. 31, 19891 The South is certain to rise again in the National Hockey League, says noted hockey historian Gordie Howe, and Houston could be one of the cities to lead the resurrection.

Howe, who skated with sons Mark and Marty for the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association in the mid - 1970s, would like to see hockey return to Texas.

"Hockey is supposed to be a national sport," Howe said, "So how can we not have teams in the South? I know the (NHL) doesn't want to have any failures, but I know that wouldn't happen in Houston."

Howe, who is an executive with the Hartford Whalers, was in Houston Wednesday to promote the Apple Tree Hockey Challenge September 26 at The Summit between the the Whalers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

For each ticket purchased to the exhibition game, $1 will be donated to the Houston chapter of the "Just Say No" to drugs campaign.

The feature attraction of the game is Mario Lemieux, who won the NHL scoring title last year and recently signed a new contract with the Penguins worth $12 million over five years.

This is the third consecutive year the NHL has held a preseason game in Houston.

"I think that's a good sign," Howe said. "It shows the league is still testing this market. If they didn't want to have a team here, they wouldn't bother to play the game here."

Howe, whose 32 years of professional hockey included four with the Aeros, thinks the NHL will not consider expanding to Houston unless Dallas comes in at the same time.

"You would have to do it that way to make it economically feasible," Howe said. "When I was with the Aeros, our nearest rival was 1,500 miles away. Our travel expenses each year were 20 percent more than the rest of the league."

The travel expenses may end up being a reason why hockey returns to Houston.

"The league has to do something to help the Los Angeles Kings," Howe said. "They're all alone out there. If they put two teams in Texas and one in San Francisco it would balance things out."

The Aeros dominated the WHA while Howe and his sons played in Houston, drawing good crowds at The Summit and winning two league championships. But the team folded in 1977, one year before four WHA teams were accepted into the NHL. "The Aeros definitely could have competed in the NHL," said Howe, who was the WHA's most valuable player in 1974 at age 45.

Howe still has regrets the Aeros didn't survive.

"I loved it in Houston and so did my wife," Howe said. "We took a pay cut twice to stay here and for four months we lived on our signing bonus when things were rough for the team. That's how much we wanted to stay."

When the Houston Aeros were darlings of this city's sports fans more than 12 years ago, they hosted the Czechoslovak National "B" team in The Summit.

The Home team led by the legendary Gordie Howe and his two sons won the fast skating contest by a close 2:1 score, which could have been 4:2 for Czechs, if three or their shots in the third period did go in instead of hitting the goalposts. The large crowd at that game contained about a hundred vocal supporters of the Czech team, some of them waving the Czechoslovak flags.

I am sure that most of the Houston ice hockey fans long for the reappearance of this sport at this city.

This nostalgic feeling is shared by many Czech - Americans living in

Houston and going frequently, in the past, to the Aeros home games, because ice hockey; together with soccer,is the most popular sport in the Old Country.

Having this in mind I am enclosing two short notes from the Houston Post dated September 11th and 12th about ice hockey games between The Stanley Cap Champion Calgary Flames and The Czech National team in Prague, Czechoslovakia. (Calgary Flames were the best team of the NHL, the National Hockey League) during the last regular season ending this spring of 1989.

September 11, 1989 Czechs too quick: The Calgary Flames were outskated by the Czechoslovakian national hockey team, losing 4 - 2 in the first game played by a National Hockey League team in Eastern Europe.

Playing in Prague, left wing Colin Patterson and Joe Nieuwendyk scored in the first 11 minutes to give the Stanley Cup champions a two - goal lead, but goals by Jergus Baca and Jiri Dolezal tied it 2 - 2 by the end of the first period.

Tomas Jelinek scored the winning goal early in the second period, and Frantisek Prochazka fired in a slap shot in the third period.

September 12, 1989: Czechs take 2: The Czechoslovakian national hockey team defeated the Calgary Flames 4 - 1 to sweep their two games in Prague.

The hosts, who rallied from a two goal deficit to defeat the Flames 4 - 2 on Sunday, gained an early two - goal lead Monday and then added another pair after Calgary had pulled within a goal.

The Flames, the first National Hockey League team to visit Eastern Europe, travel to the Soviet Union today as they continue a two - week trip.

I met quite a few Czech - Americans, including fifty or so SPJST members, while frequently attending Houston Aeros home games in the 1970s (first at the Houston Coliseum and later in The Summit), 1, therefore, feel that this article would be of great interest to many of the SPJST Vestnik readers.

Ybarras Celebrate Golden Anniversary Ray and Amalia Ybarra will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on September 23, 1989 with a Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Their children will host a dinner and dance which will be held at the Pioneer Ballroom.

Ray Ybarra and the former Amalia Suniga were married in Temple on September 23, 1939. They are the parents of seven sons and seven daughters. They also have 26 grandchildren and 2 great - grandsons.

Their sons and spouses are Victor and Mary Ybarra, Jorge Ybarra, Steve and Joann Ybarra, Jaime and Tonya Ybarra, all of Temple, Edward and Janie Ybarra of Troy, Roy and Christi Ybarra of Austin and Ray Ybarra of Copperas Cove. Daughters and spouses include Regina and Barky Martinez, Cino and Dolores Moreno, Tino and Hope Fuentes, Henry and Mary Ramos and Anna Ybarra, all of Temple, Rita Turner of Belton and Rachel Knighton of Detroit, Michigan.

Mr. Ybarra is retired from Terrell Granite. He is currently active in the Knights of Columbus. He is a first and fourth degree in the KC Council 3444.
