This is another reminder of the following activities where many SPJST members will be involved with district meeting, Czech heritage and culture: Saturday, September 23 -- District meeting with plenty of entertainment for the entire family at Wall Fire Hall in Wall, Texas with Lodge 160, San Angelo hosting.

Sunday, September 24 -- There will be two district meetings; Lodge 47, Seaton (Star Hall) will host District II meeting with well - planned entertainment; Lodge 135, Ennis volunteered to host District III meeting and entertainment at the Sokol Athletic Center in Ennis.

Saturday, September 30 -- Lodge 39, Bryan promises to have another large annual Arts and Crafts Festival at their lodge premises located off Highway 21 West near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus (known as the Smetana community).

Sunday, October 1 -- This being the first SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest at Bell County Expo Center in Belton, promises us to be a big one. Will you be there; if so, wear your Czech costume. The Fraternal Fest, which is sponsored by the SPJST Society, will have ample entertainment consisting of youth talent, singers, dancers, music, food (also delicious kolache).

Don't let this opportunity to Central Texas State Fair pass you by. If you are a non - Czech, join us any way and spend a merriment day among members and friends. Check the back page for more information.

Sunday, October 8 -- Lodge 17, New Tabor will be hosting District I fall meeting and volleyball tournament.

On this same day, Czech Day will take place at Dallas State Fair which will be held next to the Museum of Natural History on the Fairgrounds in Dallas.

Many activities are scheduled for the entire day and we encourage as many as possible to attend this annual event.

We encourage you to wear your Czech costume.

Sunday, October 22 -- Floresville Lodge 107 will be hosting District VII fall meeting and family day which, too, promises to be an enjoyable occasion for the family members.

Sunday, October 29 -- Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje will host District VI fall meeting and social with lots of good entertainment. Be there! Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 will be observing their Czech Day the same day which always turns out to be a "huge" one where a large variety of entertainment is planned as well as delicious food served; Czech language is still spoken very much among members and their friends. *** This week we will write some items about things pertaining to our Czech Moravian heritage. On page 14 is an advertisement about a Czech film being shown at the Ganado Theater in Ganado for one week -- October 6th through October 12th. It is a very funny and entertaining film, directed by well - known Czech Director Milos Forman, . Barrandov Studio Production starring Jan Vostrcil, Josef Kolb, Josef Sebanek, directed by Milos Forman and written by Milos Forman, Ivan Passer and Jaroslav Papousek which was photographed by

Miroslav Ondricek. The film was made in color in Czechoslovakia with a Czech dialog and with English subtitles. In a small provincial town, arrangements for the annual firemen's ball go wrong at every turn while the town's people prepare to honor a fire chief who is retiring at age 86. The ceremony is turned into a sprawling disaster with delightful Tati - esque situations. An international success, FIREMEN'S BALL launched the career of Milos Forman, critically acclaimed director of Loves Of A Blonde, Black Peter, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Hair and Amadeus. The film was an Academy award nominee as the best foreign language film. We encourage you to go see it while it's showing in Ganado.

Friday, September 8th Secretary of Cultural Affairs Josef Cernohlavek of the Czechoslovak Embassy visited West for a few hours while on his way to Caldwell to attend the Kolache Festival Saturday, September 9th. We had a very nice visit with him for approximately three hours, and Wednesday, September 13th, three. young men filming a "Travelogue" in Texas were also in West. All of them had seen the "The Firemen's Ball" film in Czechoslovakia and stated that it was very entertaining and good.

Mr. Alvin Svoboda, owner of Ganado Theater, states that it's possible to show Czech films to groups of people at special showings. He can be contacted at (512) 771 - 2164 or 771 - 3454 and he would try to accommodate anyone. *** A child who comes home from school this fall with a suddenly flaky scalp will probably not be helped by dandruff shampoo, since children under 14 rarely get dandruff. Rather, your child may need treatment for scalp ringworm, a fungal infection that causes dandrufflike flakes. Scalp ringworm has been spreading recently, in part because kids share hats and combs. A doctor will prescribe a topical lotion or griseofulvin, an oral antifungal drug. Ringworm is not dangerous, but left untreated it can cause temporary hair loss. And it can spread to other parts of the body, where it shows up as a red or pink ring.

Until the ringworm is treated, the infection remains contagious, too. *** College applicants who can't afford trips to several campuses can ask many colleges for a free videocassette tour.

You will be seeing the schools in their best light, of course. If the college does not provide one, your high school or public library may be willing to order a video tour from Collegiate Choice, a firm that helps students choose appropriate schools. The company offers videos of more than 200 colleges, available to libraries for $20 each from Collegiate Choice at 41 Surrey Lane, Tenafly, New Jersey 07670. *** Hotels and motels, in need of thousands of new workers each year, are inviting older people and the disabled to apply. Many of the jobs, which range from front - desk personnel to custodians, are part time and do not require experience. Job seekers can contact local hotels or send a letter and resume to the American Hotel and Motel Association Job Referral Service, 1201 New York Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005. The meeting will be held on September 24, 1989, beginning at 2 p.m. and will be very short. At the close of the meeting, games will begin, such as country store, cake walk, coke walk and a fish pond. There will also be door prizes as well as a Christmas tree ornament contest for the SPJST youth club members. A quilt contest, kolache contest and horseshoe contest will be held for adult members.

A free meal will be furnished; also free drinks will be available. Anyone attending is asked to bring 2 grocery items for the games and a salad or a dessert per family. to accompany the meal.

Good fraternal fellowship will be enjoyed by the entire family. All District II members and their families are encouraged to attend.

District II Volleyballers

Attention

The time is here once again for our annual SPJST District II Volleyball Tournament.

This year the Supreme Lodge has made some rule changes. Probably the most important change to make note of is that this year we will be having two categories or levels of volleyball that a lodge may enter. There will be an "A" and "B" Division. The "A" Division will allow any type of legal spike, unless directed toward and hitting any female on opposing team.

Explanation of "B" Team is: No spiking will be allowed, if a team spikes a ball in any way, that team would lose the ball or point.

As far as your local lodge entering a team or teams here is an example of what categories you may enter. Each lodge may enter 2 teams; either 2 "A" Teams, or 2 "B" Teams, or 1 "A" team and 1 "B" Team.

After our district playoffs, District II will get to send 2 teams to State Playoffs. They will be the winners of "A" and "B" categories, or the top 2 in one of the categories.

The final most important rule change is that no member may play on more than one team. If there is an injury to a team member, then a substitute may be made.

This year the District II Playoffs will tentatively be held in the Thrall High School Gymnasium; the date to mark on your calendar for the playoffs will be "OCTOBER 15th." Please be sure and mark this date on your calendar.

Give me a call or write to let me know what categories your lodge will be entering in as soon as possible. so I can draw up the tournament brackets.

Dear District II Members: I hope everyone is planning on coming out to our fall meeting on Sunday, September 24, 1989 at Lodge No. 47 in Seaton. By now each lodge should have received my letter and passed it on to the members.

IV Fun Day

Members are advised of the District IV Fun Day which will be held Saturday, September 23, 1989 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Fire Hall in Wall, Texas with Lodge No. 160, San Angelo hosting this event.

Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, September 10 at 4 p.m.

President Melvin Steger called the meeting to order and Tammy Machu and Nikki Rieger presented the flag and led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for our deceased Brother C.A. Lawhon.

We then had roll call of officers.

The minutes were read and also the correspondence and treasurer's report.

A letter was read from District II President D.I. Bohac about our fall meeting on Sunday, September 24th at 2 p.m. in Seaton Star Hall.

We had four new applicants, they are Robert Franklin Cocke, Susan Renee Faykus, Ashley Ann Butler and Kyle Anthony Vanecek.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported 23 members attended their meeting. They went to Six Flags Saturday, September 8th and they are selling Tom Watts products for their fund - raiser. She also reported that Andy Wuensche won first place in State YAD in a Science - Educational project.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 8th at 4 p.m.

Invitation To Lodge No. 39, Bryan Festival An

You are invited to participate in the Annual Arts and Crafts Czech Festival at the SPJST Lodge No. 39 on Saturday, September 30th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bryan, Texas. It will be held on the lodge grounds, off Texas Highway 21 West, near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus (the Smetana community). We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successful than last year.

A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts, live music and dancers, a Czech museum, kolache, children's activities, and much more.

Booth assignments will be made on a first come, first, served basis, upon receipt of application and fee. The application should be completed and returned no later than September 17th.

Due to the crowded conditions last year, and an anticipated increase in attendance, all booths will be outdoors.

Food booths are welcome, and will be restricted to a specific area. All booth spaces will be posted at the information stand the day of the festival.

Lodge 39 Bryan Schedules Festival Activities Dear Fellow Lodge Members: Plans for our second Annual SPJST Arts and Crafts Czech Festival are now underway. The event has been scheduled for Saturday, September 30th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the lodge grounds. We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successful than last year. A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts (with vendors from throughout the state), live music, a Czech museum, kolache, a variety of food booths, children's activities, and much more.

There is no admission charge to the festival, however, we will conclude the day's festivities with a dance featuring the ever - popular polka and waltz music, to which there will be a general admission charge.

Dear Members: The House Committee extends sincere thanks to the following named members, who have worked at the lodge while I was not able to be there.

August 29th -- The kitchen and bar areas were cleaned from top to bottom including taking down the kitchen filters and cleaned at a car wash. Those who cleaned were Bessie Petr, Emil Petr, Lillie Jarma, Joe Tydlaska, Bessie Tydlaska, Wanda Petr, Charlie Petr, Rose Scott, Randy Scott, Beulah Horak, Oldrich Horak, Carlyn Ondrusek and Evelyn Salac. Two Brothers Ron Coker and Charlie Staglik came and checked the bar keg cooling control. Sister Bessie Petr treated all of us with a barbecue sandwich for lunch.

August 30th -- Emil Petr and Charlie Petr repaired a kitchen plumbing leak and mowed the lodge grounds.

September 7th -- Emil Petr met the ice maker repairman and spent quite some time at the lodge.

Thanks again for doing so much of my job; hopefully, I will be back to normal before long.

We hope another House Committee member, Brother C.J. Olson, will soon be over his back ailment and feeling well.

On September 7, 1989, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Witovec had a 50th wedding anniversary, which is a great and fortunate accomplishment. Their three children Billy and Rosemary Witovec, Robert and Barbara Macey, Mack and Beverly Strain arranged a celebration for Saturday, September 9 for these fine parents. Bill and Bess also have ten grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, who contribute to their long life. Congratulations.

A personal comment: Mr. and Mrs. Witovec are faithful game players and all of us look forward to seeing them every week. They have made many friends at Lodge 88 throughout the years. Mr. Bill received his 50 - year SPJST pin this year.

On August 27, 1989, the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association had a barbecue for their members at Lodge 88. It was very well attended and President Lad Bily's daughter, Kay, who owns the Village Dance Center and is their director put on an unusual show with all these cute and pretty young ladies from the Village Jazz Tap Company. Those, who took part are Denae LaRue, 10 years old, Julie Nowak, 10 years old and is an SPJST member (and so is her grandmother, Shelley Sulik), Audie Grammer, Michelle Kuehn, Natalie Garza and

Angie Liebl. A dance for all who attended followed this entertainment.

Miroslav and Alice Bily started on a three - week bus tour, but Miroslav had a heart attack the first day out, and stayed 81/2 days in the Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. Alice said if it had to happen, it couldn't have happened at a better place.

Providence is a new modern hospital with fine doctors. Alice also had a nice place to stay; one of their sons - in law, Mr. and Mrs. John Sour live a 10 - minute drive from the hospital. After a couple of days of being discharged from the hospital the Sours drove them to New Orleans where they visited their dear friends, Brother Ben and Sister Minnie Petrusek. After 3 days they flew to Houston accompanied by son, John, wife and friend, who had spent the Labor Day weekend in New Orleans on Bourbon Street. Miroslav is doing well now. While at the Petruseks, they were shown slides of the trip they missed, which was the East Coast; nine days in Canada, Nova Scotia, Halifax and Newfoundland.

Labor Day weekend, Arnold and I visited with Grandma Hanka before we went to Weimar to visit with the Al Marshalls. Grandma was doing very well, although she does get lonely, which I can understand, but her oldest grandson, Bruce, visited with her Sunday, so they spent the time playing poker. Most of my family was in Weimar for that hot weekend (100 degrees better every day for 4 days). I was elated to see my great - grandson, Shawn Hernandez, and his parents Karen and Larry from Waco.

This morning I decided to visit the craft classes at the lodge. I had such a good time visiting with all these gifted ladies. They make these beautiful decorated T - shirts, and asked me to join them, but I'm afraid they cannot teach an old dog new tricks. If you don't care to take part -- go visit them anyway.

Dear Members and Friends: Talk about being happy, September 10th the weather started to change. It was some cooler and then the Metroplex started to receive the much needed rain. The few days of cloudy skies and rain have dropped the temperature quite a bit; again, the electric company will lose money due to the air - conditioners not having to work so hard. Everyone is more pleasant and happy due to the cooler weather.

August 27th my family was invited to the Houston Chapter No. 1 Fire and Storm Insurance annual dinner and dance, which was very nice. We got to visit with several of our friends there, the Bilys, Kuropatas, Pearl Hanka, Mitch and others. Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, was also present and I got to talk to him. He is an SPJST director of District V. Houston is like Fort Worth, very friendly to visitors and they try to make you feel at home. The meal was wonderful and the music was also enjoyed.

The next day, Monday, we spent the day with Christine's brother and sister - in - law, Frank and Emily Slovak. It was a nice visit because both of them are now retired. Emily retired from Mrs. Baird's Bread Company on August 1st and Frank retired 1st of the

year. We enjoyed a delicious meal at their home and the visit was wonderful. Frank, Emily and their two sons are SPJST members.

It seems that when there is a death in our lodge, it comes in two or three in a row; Elmer Howard, George Balaja, Charlie Kratky and Charles Beauchamp. May these members rest in peace and I am sure they will be missed. The George Balajas lived in Michigan for several years, they went there to work in the auto industry.

There were five brothers and two sisters. Their father was one of the earlier presidents of Lodge No. 92 when it was getting started. The boys were all musicians and played in the band for the dances that were held on Sunday nights. I believe most of that family has passed away but are not forgotten. When Charley Kratky was a small boy he was run over by a street car and his leg was amputated, but that didn't hold him back doing things he wanted to do. He learned watch repair and that was his occupation. Survivors include his wife and two sons and others in his family. There are three sisters, Victoria Murphy, Millie Waters and Juanita Johnny and one brother, Bernie Kratky. The funeral service was nice and one that I haven't heard in some time. The deceased believe in this theory, that there were two sets of foot prints in the sand and later there was one set; he asked the Lord why there was only one set and the Lord told him the reason there was only one set is because I was carrying you. It was a very nice service.

Our September 10th meeting was well attended. There were three guests, Elizabeth Dodson, Charles and Gwen Miles. The Miles moved from Washington, so now they will be Texans and maybe later members of our lodge.

Most of the meeting, after the officers' reports, was about the Czech Heritage Day on September 16th. It seems that everything is in order due to the fine committee that was appointed.

It is great when things are managed to go so well. Lodge 92 really plans to show you a good time whether it be just a dance or a special occasion. I will have to write more after the Czech Heritage Day Celebration. I hope the weather will cooperate, but it seems all will be inside of our air - conditioned hall.

The sunshine chairpersons sent birthday cards and get well cards to our members. There were 20 birthdays in September to members of 65 years of age.

There were three members with birthdays in September at the meeting, so birthday greetings were sung to them. We hated to hear that our Brother Raymond (Inky) Alcorn was in the hospital with double pneumonia. We wish him a speedy recovery; Inky was our bartender for several years a few years back.

The youth club did something nice this meeting It was Grandparent's Day so they sang to all grandparents and then presented each with a coupon for a sandwich at the youth club kitchen. Many thanks to our youth club. Again, the Hospitality Committee served a good meal. This was done by Helen Kubala, Liz Howard and Victoria Murphy. We hope all members are in good health and now that school has started with the cooler weather the attendance at all lodges should be better. Let's not forget that if your lodge has something, please try to be there with the rest of your friends.

Here is just a little something to make you laugh: A mother mouse and

her brood were confronted by a big torn cat. The mother mouse yelled, Bow - Wow! The cat turned tail and ran away. The mother mouse then turned to the children and said: "You see how important it is to know a second language."

Dear Members and Friends: The Youth Club's Grandparent's Day was a big success. A hundred hamburgers and all the trimmings were enjoyed by all.

Brother Bobby Cleveland composed a beautiful tribute to the grandparents which was read by all the youth to all present, and they were all given one for a keepsake. Thank you Sister Carolyn, our youth leader, and to Bobby for making it a wonderful Grandparent's Day. Then Brother Emil Milan was honored for his 60th birthday by Sister Debbie and Alan Stockard and family. Brother Bobby Cleveland composed a life story on Brother Emil that got many laughs.

Bobby really has talent. Hope you have many more.

Our meeting was called to order (ran a little late) by our president Brother Jerry Milan. All officers were present.

After the pledge to our flag, the members remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our deceased members, Sister Ruth Hicks, Brother Albert Roy Vasula and Sister Helen Vrla, Jr. of Lodge 130.

The minutes and treasurer's reports were approved as read An expression of thanks was read from Sister .Liz Howard of Lodge 92.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported 16 youth members and 3 chaperones attended camp this year. They went in 2 vans and a truck, and everyone enjoyed it. She reported they will have a Halloween Party Tuesday, October 31st from 7 to 9 p.m. More details later.

Sister Mary Renfro sold additional insurance and a youth transfer Matthew Marcum from Lodge 180. He attended the youth camp and really enjoyed it. We were happy to have Sister Kitty Rippin of Lodge 180 in our midst, the grandmother of Matthew.

Brother Milan gave a report on the coordinators' meeting he and several members attended at Lodge 84, Dallas; and the TOCA meeting he attended Saturday in Caldwell and reminded us of the Czech Fraternal Fest in Belton October 1st, and the State Fair of Texas Czech Day Sunday, October 8th. They won't be in the Band Shell this year, it was moved to the Special Events Tent next to the Museum of National Arts building.

Sister Pavey reported on all the cards sent.

Sister Rose Steinman was honored to ride in the Westfest Parade in her new kroj (costume) from Czechoslovakia that she received many compliments on.

Wednesday, September 20, 1989—VESTNIK/7 honored this weekend at the Coaches Congress in Philadelphia as the Choreographer of the Year from all of the Unites States. Congratulations, Kelly. She has been invited to go to Germany in October. Have a safe trip.

We are proud of you! Brother Rome and Mila Milan will also be attending that meeting after they help their mom and dad, Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan celebrate their 32nd anniversary in Boston, Massachusetts, where Sister Milan will be honored at the opening of her premiere -- Boston Exhibition, "Images In Light" at the Newman Gallery, where they believe that she has the potential to become one of America's foremost contemporary impressionist painters.

Her paintings are priced today at a level comparable to the works of Pierre Bittar three years ago when he also made his Boston debut at the Newman Gallery. Good luck and congratulations!

Brother Tal Milan and Sister Leslie Poindexter will also join Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta for their anniversary.

We also extend our congratulations to Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Milan on their 45th anniversary, and Brother Emil and Sister Sally Milan on their 40th anniversary. May you all have many more.

Sister Anna Johnson presented Sister Mary Hale a beautiful 88th birthday cake and to Sister Mary Pavey for her 79th. Her speciality strawberry shortcakes are alwaysenjoyed by all.

"Happy Birthday" went out to us and Sister Donna Parker and to our youth member Kara Christopher.

Sunday was really a big day of celebrations.

Brother Jerry Milan was our door prize winner.

Due to the State Fair on our October meeting, we will meet Tuesday, October 3rd at 8:30 p.m.

No. 161, La Parita Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting held Sunday, September 10, 1989 at 11:30 a.m. at the Gateway Restaurant at Pleasanton, Texas was a very enjoyable occasion.

There were 13 members and 3 guests present.

President Lloyd House called the meeting to order asking all members to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Helen Zezula gave the table prayers.

Luncheon of choice followed with everyone enjoying good fellowship and their meal.

The meeting continued following the luncheon. President Lloyd House asked Secretary - Treasurer Tillie Koch to read the minutes from the previous meeting. Minutes were accepted as read by President Lloyd House. The treasury report followed.

There was no old business.

New Business -- President Lloyd House read correspondence from SPJST Supreme Lodge regarding the Battleship Texas and Czech Chair.

Secretary Tillie Koch stated she would call regarding the donation since no information came in.

A motion was made by Ernest Spacek and seconded by Mary Ermis that a donation of $25 be given for Battleship Texas and $25 for Czech Chair. Motion carried.

President Lloyd House discussed that a member was entitled to a 50 year pin in December; a check will be sent to the SPJST. President House approved it and it was seconded by Helen Zezula. Motion carried.

Plans for a Christmas Party to be given December 3, 1989 at the same place, Gateway Restaurant, Pleasanton, Texas were made. A motion by Jim Zezula, was seconded

by Thomas Woodly. Motion carried.

The meeting time -- 11:45 a.m. motion made by Edith Chessir was seconded by Bette House. Motion carried. This meeting will also cover election of officers for the coming year.

Ernest Spacek made a wonderful suggestion for gifts of toys for children this year instead of gag gifts. A motion was made by Ernest Spacek and seconded by Edith Chessir. Motion carried.

President Lloyd House thanked the visitors and wished them return.

News

Members of the SPJST: I would like to invite all members and their guests to the dinner - dance to be held at our lodge on Sunday, September 24th. Dinner will be served from 12 noon until 3 p.m. at which time our dance will begin polka - waltz dancing to Henry Repka and the Wilderness Band until 7 p.m. This is a FREE dance for our lodge dues -paying members, although we ask these members to furnish a covered vegetable dish and/or pastry. Roast beef and sausage, coffee and tea will be furnished by the lodge. Do not bring cole slaw or sauerkraut because our lodge will also furnish these two items. We will need green vegetables, potatoes and pastry, mostly. Dinner only, or dance only to non - members is $4 or dinner and dance combined is $6.

This will be a good day to keep the wife and mother out of the kitchen at home this day and they can enjoy themselves listening and dancing to good music in a cool place on that Sunday.

Our work day projects are showing good results and, after one more work day, the complete floor in our Grand Ballroom will be painted. We are doing this in three stages due to the paint fumes not being too harmful to our dancers.

Talk about dancing, this past Saturday night, the Texas Brew drew nearly 600 people, and normally during the hot days of summer our attendance drops off. Our schedule for 1990 will be completed shortly; Helen Wallace and her crew are busy making contracts with the better bands for next year. Also tickets for the New Year's Eve dance will go on sale shortly and, again, we are looking for a sell - out before December 1st.

The San Jacinto Chapter of the Shriners recently held their fund raiser fish fry at our lodge and served approximately 1,500 people. This benefit is for a good cause, The Burn Unit in Galveston and also a blood drive was held at our lodge that same day. The Shriners have recognized Lodge 172 in this worthy cause.

Next week, the East Harris County senior citizens will be having their spaghetti dinner at our lodge and the South Houston Police Department held their dinner and awards banquet recently in our ballroom.

Plans are completed for the third annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival to be held at our lodge on November 4th and 5th. This will be a bigger and better affair this year, so plan to attend.

No. 183 (Mid-Cities) Arlington Lodge

Dear Members: The September monthly meeting is history and the big discussion was the hardwood dance floor and every effort will be made to have it installed by the end of the year.

There was also a report on the business - to - business expo that Lodge 183 was involved in at the Arlington Convention Center this year and it's a good way to expose SPJST and Fraternalism to the public.

This month five new members, Jason Davis, Gloria and Laddie Kaska, Otillie and John Roznovsky were approved and Gracie Kneschk increased her insurance. Our sales representatives are working, however, we just need more help from the rest of the members in getting new prospects, this is what keeps the lodge growing.

Renee Hughes missed winning $5 by not being there, and I won $25 and Rozetta Tary won $13 by being at the meeting, so you can see that it still pays to be present at the meeting.

Several members reported that they had relatives who were ill and they were remembered by a moment of silence, also all of the members who may be ill that the officers don't know about.

Remember the next dance Saturday, October 7th with music by Vrazel Polka and Country - Western Band come on out and have a good time at the lodge.

There is also another dance on Saturday, October 28th with a country and western band. There is always plenty of room to dance at our lodge so come out and have a good time; come out and join the rest of our members.

A smart businessman is someone who buys stock at $10 and sells it at $12. The other kind of man buys at $10, sees it rise to $18 and does nothing because his greed is waiting for it to get to $20; but at $20 he does nothing because it might go to $21 ; most of the time he ends up with nothing, so it's better to be a smart businessman.

No. 88, Houston Birthday Club Lodge

On September 6, 1989 the Birthday Club met at Lodge 88 for their monthly meeting and lunch prepared by some of our faithful cooks, Bessie Lero, who cooked for Anna Hoffman, Clara Jecmenek, Willie Mae Stang and Mary Ehrett.

The meeting was opened by President Kathy Trefell at 11:15 a.m. with Brother Louis Hanus making a presentation to the Birthday Club Sisters in honor of our beloved Mrs. Annie Baethe, 100 years young. He also presented a beautiful picture with a resume on the opposite side, which has been displayed in the dining room.

I just realized today that my daddy was born the same year in 1889 and also would be 100 years in December. Louis gave a very interesting story about all the changes in her lifetime; the wars, Depression, great changes in science and, of course, many of us know the many changes that took place -- just stop and think back. It's surprising!

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report. We were glad to see Lillie back from London where she had visited with her daughter, Aggie and her husband, Joe. She said she had a good time touring London, but it was cold; it's hard to believe that when we were melting.

Mary Kosut gave her card report, and then resigned from this job because she had many health problems lately and feels like she needs to give up some of her jobs.

We'll miss you, Mary, but do come when you can.

We were all upset to hear that Della and Marian Kadlecek are in the hospital. We hope you'll soon be better and get to come home and be in your proper places at the lodge.

Edna Froehlich is moving to Cuero next month, where her daughter lives.

She was and still is a real fine club member. She will be missed, but she says she'll be back with us at least once a month. Hope so!

Czech Day is Sunday, October 29, 1989 and, as usual, the pastry booth will be for the Birthday Club ladies, with Lillie Spies in command. She will need help, so tell her when you can help. The ladies also from our lodge should help us out with pastry. We'd appreciate it very much.

President Kathy announced there would be no meeting September 13th, however, Lillian Finn made a motion, seconded by Evelyn Mikolas, to all go to Wyatt's Cafeteria for lunch that day, which was accepted by all.

President Kathy's gift was won by Emma Jarisch, and the Calcutta was won by Helen Hegwood and Josephine Bishop.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Tily Bily, Pearl Hanka and Birdie Pech.

Helen Hegwood asked the blessing and we adjourned to a good lunch.

The American - Czech Culture Society will sponsor the 49th Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 8, 1989. Coffee and kolache will be served beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the special events' tent located next to the Museum of Natural History on the Fairgrounds.

The day will start at 9 a.m. with a Catholic Mass (with Czech singing) at the Hall of State building.

State Royalty And YAD Climaxes A Year Of Achievement For SPJST Youth

On August 26th and 27th the SPJST youth gathered for the annual State Royalty, Talent and Craft competition. This year, the royalty pageant was held Saturday night at Lodge 47 Seaton while the craft and talent competition was held at the Mayborn Center on Sunday. I believe that the split in activities afforded a more relaxed environment for the competitors and enabled most of those in attendance to return home while it was still daylight.

The Royalty competition had youth from Districts I, II, III, V and VI competing for the title. The results revealed Stephanie Roye of District VI - Lodge 30, as the new 1989 - 90 SPJST State Queen and Bryan Becan of District III - Lodge 84, the new 1989 90 SPJST State King. My sincere thanks to Marcy Dorotik and Daryl Kortis, 1988 - 89 State Queen and King. I thoroughly enjoyed the year with these two dedicated youth and I want to wish them the best in all their future endeavors; they will always hold a special place in my heart.

Sunday's YAD had over 200 youth participating in the day's competition.

We had 7 Beseda circles representing the following districts: I, II, III and VI. I would like to see each district have a Beseda circle next year !!!

We had 12 group talent acts and 23 individual talent acts. I might say that we have some of the best talent anywhere to be found. The audience was mesmerized by the quality of talent our youth displayed. The craft was excellent and I know that the judges had a tough job in determining the rankings. The special category, Pieced Quilt Block, had almost 60 entries. I have a job ahead of me making a quilt to hang in the museum' !I My sincere thanks to all the parents, youth leaders, office personnel, DYCs, assistants, directors, officers, editor, and Tim who worked behind the scenes with our youth to make this YAD a successful event.

From The District Youth Counselor Caldwell Hosted District I YAD Dear Readers: On Sunday, August 6, 1989, District I held their annual Youth Achievement Day at Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell. A very large crowd was in attendance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who helped to make this day such a big success. A special thank you to my assistants, Ann Schoeneman and Randy Gaas. A big thank you goes to Doris, Matthaeu and Wesley Ford, Ann Schoeneman, John and Karla Moore for helping set up the hall late Saturday night. Thanks to my mother - in - law, Viola Skrabanek for the use of her beautiful potted plants to decorate the stage.

Thanks to the youth leaders of our district, namely, Betty Schoenemann (Lodge 9 Snook), Doris Ford (Lodge 13 Dime Box) and Linda Faust (Lodge 39 Bryan) for all the hard work they did in preparation for this event.

Someone who I always forget to recognize is my big sister, Betty Suehs.

She is the one responsible for getting all the money to the right place for presentation at YAD. A lot of time goes into getting the envelopes stuffed with cash and coordinating the correct envelope to make sure it gets to the correct winner. Thanks, Betty! Thanks also goes to all those who helped in getting the crafts and talent acts registered and to those who worked in tabulating. Thank you Billy Orsak for helping out with the sound equipment and to Ricky Ford for keeping time.

There were 156 craft entries, 19 individual talent entries, 10 group talents, 2 Beseda circles, 6 queen contestants and 2 king contestants.

The time is almost here for the District II fall meeting and fun carnival. Seaton Lodge No. 47 will be the host for this year's activity.

Registration begins at 1 p.m. with a short business meeting to be held at 2 p.m.

After the business meeting, the afternoon will be filled with many activities. There will be contests; horseshoe pitching, pastries, quilts and, of course, the Youth Christmas Tree Ornaments. We encourage all of our District II members to enter. The youth will have many booths set up which will include cake and soda walk, spinning wheel, dart throw, fish pond and face painting. There will also be door prizes and a drawing will be held.

To continue the celebration of grandparents in the month of September, we encourage all grandparents to attend. We look forward to see which SPJST grandparent has the most SPJST grandchildren present.

The evening will conclude with a meal. We ask each member to bring a dessert and vegetable for this meal.

Any donation you would like to make to District II will be appreciated to help defray the expenses. Each member is asked to bring 2 canned goods for the spinning wheels. Any cakes will also be appreciated for the cake walk.

Lodge 66 Waco Youth Club Dear Members, On September 2nd, Lodge 66 Youth Club rode on a float in the Westfest Parade. After the parade, we all enjoyed the rest of the day at the Westfest grounds.

We have adopted the Moody Rest Home for our charity project. On September 6th, we made ribbons for Grandparent's Day and delivered them to the Moody Rest Home on Saturday, September 9th.

Dear Members, The Lodge 84 Teen Club has been quite busy these past few months. I would like to highlight a few important events to bring you up - to - date.

July 15 -- We held our own annual Princess Ball with our new Lodge Queen Leslie Barnes and King Kyle Matus.

July 20 - 23 -- District III camp at —SPJSTVal Verde and we sent 8 teens.

August 2 -- Teen and Junior Clubs went to Wet n' Wild and enjoyed all the slides.

One of the most special days in August was Sunday, August 13th when Lodge 84 hosted a dinner for our ANNOUNCING... members 70 years and older, honoring FIRST FRATERNAL CZECH FEST them for all they have contributed.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1989 Our teens served the sit down dinner, BELTON EXPO CENTER and performed Beseda and Talent BELTON, TEXAS *** numbers.

Next came the long awaited "Teen LOCAL LODGE OFFICERS' Trip," this year at Tanglewood Resort WORKSHOP on Lake Texoma. It was August 19th SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1990 and 21st. This was great fun for us, *** and I think our chaperones had a good time, too!

DISTRICT II Finally, State YAD in Temple The District II Fall Meeting will be August 26th and 27th. We are so hosted by Lodge No. 47, Seaton on proud of all our teen contestants. Our Sunday, September 24 1989 royalty contestants, Queen Barbara *** Reznik and King Bryan Becan did a marvelous job. Bryan was chosen State DISTRICT HI King, and we were delighted. The The District III Fall Meeting will following day our teens won first in take place Sunday, September 24, 1989 Beseda, both teen categories of with Lodge No. 135, Ennis hosting the individual talent, teen group talent, event. and several craft awards. It was *** altogether a great weekend for Lodge 84 Teen Club.

DISTRICT IV We are now looking forward to District IV Fun Day will be held Lodge 84 Czech Fest on September Saturday, September 23, 1989 at the 17th where the teens will have the Fire Hall in Wall, Texas. Lodge No. country store booth, and then at the 160, San Angelo will be the host lodge.

District III meeting on September 24th *** several of our teens will play on the volleyball team.

The register was read. There were 23 members and 9 adults present.

Guest introduced was Carolyn Broxon.

The minutes were read and approved.

Nikki Rieger gave the treasurer's report.

Fund - raising plans for this month are selling Tom Watts.

New member is Ashley Butler.

This month's social was going to Six Flags at Arlington on September 9, 1989.

The next youth club meeting will be on October 8, 1989 at 3:30 p.m. in the Taylor SPJST Lodge. The meeting adjourned at 4 p.m.

There will be a promenade of authentic Czech costumes, dancing of the Czech national dance "Ceska Beseda," children's program, Czech singing, presentation of the American Czech King and Queen (oldest lady and oldest gentleman attending), the longest married American - Czech couple, Czech refreshments, Czech souvenirs, accordian music and much more.

At the Marine Corp Square there will be Sokol exhibition featuring gymnasts from Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth Houston and West.

Reunions Kulhanek Reunion

The 17th Kulhanek reunion of the descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek will be Sunday, September 24, 1989 at Sts. Peter and Paul dining hall in Frelsburg, Texas. A Holy Mass for deceased family members will be at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Registration at 11 a.m.. Each family bring a basket lunch for your family. Plates, napkins, forks, knives, bread, coffee, tea and ice will be furnished. Dinner served at 12:30 p.m., short meeting at 2 p.m., and each family registering will be eligible for drawing of door prize. Leonard Kulhanek, reunion historian, will have copies of The Kulhanek Family History book, which will sell for $7 plus $2.50 postage and handling for mail orders.
