The remainder of September (SPJST) activities within the communities include: September 16 -- Czech Heritage Day celebration at Lodge 92 (National Hall) in Fort Worth September 17 -- Czechfest Celebration at Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84. District V Family Day also fall on this same day at Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 September 23 (Saturday) -- Lodge 160, San Angelo will host District IV Fun Day at the Fire Hall in Wall, Texas September 24 -- District meetings with lots of entertainment for the entire family at Lodge Seaton No. 47 in District II; and Lodge 135, Ennis will host District III meeting.

September 30 (Saturday) -- Annual Arts and Crafts Festival at Lodge 39, Bryan known as the Smetana community off Highway 21 West near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus. *** The Fall [Autumn] activities of our SPJST Society are getting underway so that by the time Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc. arrive, our lodges and members will be busy with these holidays. (Autumn begins Saturday, September 23rd.)

Check the Bulletin Board and the SPJST Lodge Calendar for dates and be sure to remember the SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest Sunday, October 1st sponsored by our SPJST Society in conjunction with the CENTRAL TEXAS STATE FAIR at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas.

In the Czech Section of this issue is a list of Czech films and dates when they will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston in the future months submitted by Brother John J. Karas.

This list should be kept handy for your reference; we will try to repeat it, however, space is limited in the Vestnik. Please do this for yourself, and help us -- The Vestnik is for SPJST Society correspondence, mainly.

The English version of the list was printed in the August 30th issue on page 7 and we will also reprint it.

In the near future-- Mr. Alvin Svoboda in Ganado will be showing a good Czech film in the theater at Ganado; we will have more information in the near future about this film. Watch for it! ***

Fraternalism represents not one particular faith or creed, but all of them! Fraternal benefit societies among which our SPJST ranks high in esteem, have through the years proven that they are worthy of confidence and have lived up to the principle of being "their brothers' keepers." We must follow in the path of our long list of fraternal builders, a long list of honest, capable workers, lodge officers -- men and women in our field who, by their faithfulness to duty, their efficiency in fulfilling the trust in their keeping, have honestly earned the confidence and respect of our people.

As long as we have dedicated and alert fraternal leaders, so long will fraternalism prospers. "Who does the best his circumstances allow, does well, acts nobly." Today as ever before, people everywhere will always welcome "a loving heart, an understanding mind and helping hand."

Were we to detail all of the grand deeds performed by fraternal societies which in effect were expressed through the practice of fraternalism, chiefly aimed at extending its humanitarian concept of helpfulness and to make this work a better one, it would take a good - size book. To mention but a few of the major projects, however, can be included: protection of the home and family life, patriotic service to the nation, and suspension of war clause in periods of strife, and promotion of good fellowship in our lodge facilities as well as educating our young people to good citizenship. ***

It is an exhilarating experience, to read of the various undertakings being carried out by our lodges and districts in most parts of the state. Yet, not all of our lodges are so involved, not even a majority of them.

By showing interest we cannot only increase our activity but also retain the feeling of fraternity among the lodge members and allow friends and neighbors of the members to become acquainted with some of the work being carried on in the SPJST. Our Society was founded by a group of pioneers who were not afraid of making mistakes in the pursuit of goals. But if mistakes were made they were overcome by new effort. No work yet has ever been done without mistakes. What matters is that in the end the work is accomplished and one continues to go forward.

Let us all share in our membership and what it affords, let us actively share in the life of the organization and let us not be afraid of the work or mistakes -- One of the most fraternal acts we can do for our fellow citizens with good morals, etc., is to ask them to take out SPJST life insurance and become an interested and fraternal member. ***

Citizens' - band two - way radios, (CB) which almost faded from the scene a decade ago, are gaining ground again among drivers who want access to help in an emergency but without spending a fortune on a car phone.

Two models that can be stowed in the trunk are Midland's 77909 Ready Rescue and Cobra's 39 Plus. Both come in a storage case and include a hand - held CB unit that plugs into the cigarette lighter and an antenna that clings magnetically to the car's roof.

Most chain stores sell them for under $70.

The radios are not as reliable as car phones, however. To raise help, you'll have to be within about 6 to 8 miles of another CB -- often closer in rolling or mountainous terrain -- and interference caused by too many people on the channels can hamper communication. But persistence will usually pay off Emergency - channel 9 is monitored by state police in 45 states as well as by a national volunteer CB rescue squad. About 85 percent of truckers have CB's in their cabs and often scan channels for motorists in *** trouble.

Overseas Express Mail just got cheaper. Effective July 1st, the U.S. Postal Service will charge $10.75, down from $13 to $18, for express packages of a half pound or less. An introductory rate of $8.75 is available from now until July.

From The SecretaryTreasurer's Office SPJST Continues Popular Lock-In On Mortgage Rates There are many reasons for a qualifying member to get their mortgage financed with the SPJST. Perhaps the best reason is the fact the SPJST locks in the interest rate promised for a period of six months. When we promise to make a loan at 91/2%, that rate is locked in for six months and that is the rate the member will receive even if it takes six months to close the loan and rates have increased at time of closing.

The failure of some other lenders to follow through on quoted rates sparked a conflict between lenders and borrowers about the practice of reneging on loan rate guarantees. There is report of cases where a lender promised a loan at one rate but the contract for the approved rate was much higher. This was never a problem with the SPJST since we provide a generous six months lockin period. There can be no interest rate increase unless it takes no longer than 6 months to close the loan.

The SPJST philosophy in this case can probably be attributed to our concern about treating our members fairly; the belief of management that if an organization takes care of its members, the members will take care of the organization.

Attention District II Volleyballers The time is here once again for our annual SPJST District II Volleyball Tournament.

This year the Supreme Lodge has made some rule changes. Probably the most important change to make 'note of is that this year we will be having two categories or levels of volleyball that a lodge may enter. There will be an "A" and "B" Division. The "A" Division will allow any type of legal spike, unless directed toward and hitting any female on opposing team.

Explanation of "B" Team is: No spiking will be allowed, if a team spikes a ball in any way, that team would lose the ball or point.

As far as your local lodge entering a team or teams here is an example of what categories you may enter. Each lodge may enter _2 teams; either 2 "A" Teams, or 2 "B" Teams, or 1 "A" team and 1 "B" Team.

After our district playoffs, District II will get to send 2 teams to State Playoffs. They will be the winners of "A" and "B" categories, or the top 2 in one of the categories.

The final most important rule change is that no member may play on more than one team. If there is an injury to a team member, then a substitute may be made.

This year the District II Playoffs will tentatively be held in the Thrall High School Gymnasium; the date to mark

Wednesday, September 13, 1989—VESTNIK/5 on your calendar for the playoffs will be "OCTOBER 15th." Please be sure and mark this date on your calendar.

To Host District II Meeting Seaton

Dear District II Members: I hope everyone is planning on coming out to our fall meeting on Sunday, September 24, 1989 at Lodge No. 47 in Seaton. By now each lodge should have received my letter and passed it on to the members.

District V Fall Meeting Dear Members of District V: Our plans have been completed for an outstanding District V Family Day Fall meeting hosted by Lodge 88 in Houston on September 17, 1989 and we, again, cordially invite you and your friends to attend this fun - filled day.

The District is furnishing the meat, so bring your favorite dish and enjoy the delicious meal with free drinks, to be served between 12 and 1 p.m.

(There will also be free drinks after the meeting). You need to be there at 12 so you can enjoy the real highlight of the day and that is fellowshipping with members, renewing old friendships and making new friends. For those who want to listen to good singing, the Choral Group from Lodge 88 will be performing from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p .m .

We plan on a brief meeting and your officers have prepared their reports to make it so. Immediately after the meeting, contests will begin. We will be judging the "best kolache" did the "prettiest quilt." The "spinning wheel" will also be in full swing where you will be spinning for numerous door prizes.

If you want to swim, bring your bathing suit and enjoy the Olympic size pool which Lodge 88 has graciously offered to open for us from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. This may be the last time your children can swim until next summer, so make it a real treat for them too!

The youth will be busy with their ornaments and achievements display.

The future of the SPJST depends on our youth, and we need to support them in every area. The district likewise needs your support and we look forward to seeing you at Lodge 88 on September 17th.

District VI Fall Meeting Newsletter This year's fall social meeting will be held October 29th at the SPJST Hall in Hillje, hosted by Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje. 39 Bryan Schedules Festival Activities Lodge

Dear Fellow Lodge Members: Plans for our second Annual SPJST Arts and Crafts Czech Festival are now underway. The event has been scheduled for Saturday, September 30th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the lodge grounds. We are hoping that this year's festival ,will be even more successful than last year. A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts (with vendors from throughout the state), live music, a Czech museum, kolache, a variety of food booths, children's activities, and much more.

There is no admission charge to the festival, however, we will conclude the day's festivities with a dance featuring the ever - popular polka and waltz music, to which there will be a general admission charge.

This type of event takes many hours of dedication and hard work on the part of our lodge. I will be calling on you for your assistance in various areas as plans continue to progress.

Invitation To Lodge No. 39, Bryan Festival An

You are invited to participate in the Annual Arts and Crafts Czech Festival at the SPJST Lodge No. 39 on Saturday, September 30th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bryan, Texas. It will be held on the lodge grounds, off Texas Highway 21 West, near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus (the Smetana community). We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successful than last year.

A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full

Yes, it's been a while since I've written. I have no excuses other than the summer is always a hectic time of year for me and I also had a little health problem.

Let me get back to our June 1st meeting. Our main business on hand was planning for our luncheon when the ladies of Ft. Worth come to visit with us.

We received correspondence from Mildred Chervenka (thanking us for the flowers), American Heart Association thanked us for the donation made in memory of John B. Long, The Women in Business Exposition sent us literature in regard to seminars and workshops and Spade Communications sent information in regard to speakers they can send out to meetings.

Birthday celebrants for June were Lillie Drzewicki, Dianne Oates, Frances Konakovsky and Betty Grier.

After the secretary, treasurer and corresponding secretary gave their reports, the membership chairman announced our two newest members, Wanda Petr and'eulah Horak.

Sunshine Chairman Lidde Pavelka brought fresh fruit to Helen Vrla, Jr., and Adelle Vlk. A money gift was sent to Dianne Oates. Sympathy cards were mailed to Dianne Oates, Helen Oates and Mildred Chervenka. Thinking - of - you cards were mailed to Libby Smith, Bob Zvolanek and Alvin Elsik.

Mikal Wayne McDowell, Jr. graduated from DeSoto High School.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike McDowell. Timothy Wayne Graeser graduated from Alabama High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Graeser, Jr., both of these boys are the grandsons of Sister Lillian Graeser.

Laurie Vlk has returned home after spending 10 weeks in Niger, West Africa. She was working in both the accounting and personnel departments in the headquarters of Sudan Interior Mission. She also had the chance to visit several tribes and make friends with nationals out in the Sahara Desert. She was invited to return as personnel director for the mission. She really enjoyed the experience.

My summer traveling included a trip to Disney Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and MGM in Florida; also a visit to Daytona Beach and Pensacola Beach was nice. New Orleans was nice to visit for a short time while we were there.

Back in July, my family, Lillian Moran, Jerry Urban (my dad), Jerry Ann Muehistein (my sister) attended the KJT celebration in La Grange, Texas. While in that area, we paid our respects at the gravesite of my Uncle Joe Urban in Smithville. Texas. He is the late brother of Sister Moran and my dad.

Lillian Moran spent 3 weeks in San Francisco visiting friends and the family of her late husband. She said the weather was very cool. She also went to Reno, Nevada.

We are sorry to report that Anne Zvolanek had to be hospitalized to have knee surgery. We hear she is doing great! Anne will soon be out among us without all that knee pain she had been experiencing.

Now for the very sad news. I was out - of - state when I heard of the passing away of our dear Helenka Vrla. She will truly be missed and I know I can speak for all of our members when I say a big void will be there among us.

I also missed going to the luncheon we had for the Ft. Worth ladies, but I've already heard only good things about the day. I wish I could have managed to have been there.

My, how the summer did fly by!

Christmas cards are out in the stores and it just seems impossible that soon we will be trimming trees, wrapping packages, etc.

If you enjoy good old - fashioned Czech entertainment, come to Houston on Sunday, October 29th and Saturday and Sunday, November 4th and 5th. It is not too early to start making plans for these two weekends.

Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston will hold its annual "Czech Day" celebration on Sunday, October 29th. Activities will include a noon meal, Czech music and singing, special entertainment, a parade of costumes and a dance at 4 p.m.

Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, 3609 Preston Road, Pasadena will host and co - sponsor the third annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival on Saturday, November 4th and Sunday, November 5th. Festival activities include a Saturday meeting of the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, a polka and waltz dance and the second annual championship polka - waltz contest. Sunday's activities include Heritage Society exhibits, SPJST Mini - Museum display, Czech singing and music, two polka and waltz dances, also a parade of costumes.

Social activities played an important part in the lives of the early Czech settlers in Texas. These two events, as well as other Czech celebrations across Texas, provide an opportunity for people to take time out of the demands of a busy daily life to enjoy themselves and at the same time remember the heritage given to us by our predecessors.

Letter To The Editor As a member of Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, I, Laurie Vlk, would like to briefly share my experience this summer.

I had an excellent opportunity to cross over oceans, languages, and cultures in order to step into another world. I spent 10 weeks working in a mission in Niger, Africa. My main goal was to support the missionaries who are already on the field and to help the "poor" African people.

However, I received more from those "poor" people than I ever could have given.

Niger, an independent republic, is the largest country in West Africa.

Four - fifths of the land is desert, the northern borders stretching to the middle regions of the Sahara Desert.

With temperatures reaching between 125 degrees - 130 degrees, the heat can be so intense, rain frequently vaporizes before it reaches the ground. The economy is fragile, based on agricultural production and uranium mining. The annual per capita income is $240. The literacy rate is 5 -- 10 percent.

Starting a new job in this new country amongst new people seemed overwhelming at first, but from the moment I stepped off the plane, I felt so very welcomed. The Africans may not have much, but what they do have they very willingly share. They were so anxious and excited to share their ways of life, they "adopted" and immersed me in their culture. I was especially close to one tribe, the Tuaregs. They invited me into their hut, sat me on the mat of honor, and literally gave me all the food they had (creamed millet and camel cheese!) They were also so excited I had come to visit, they wanted to give me their clothes, teach me their language and give me a traditional beauty treatment -- this consisted of wrapping my hands and feet with electrical tape, applying wet henna leaves, tying on plastic bags and "baking" in the sun for 2 hours! The results looked like I had slammed both hands and feet in the door and my bruises were healing! I still have remnants of these designs on my extremities (even after 8 weeks!)

Once when I was buying groceries, the store was having a contest. The interviewer was so impressed that I had come all the way from America, he gave me the prize (a T - shirt and candy bar) without me even entering!

Other highlights included going to an open - air market in "the bush" and selling Christian literature, eating drinking out of community bowls and rusty tin cans, making animal sounds in the market place in order to buy food, and starting my own Sunday School program with native children.

Through it all, the nationals continuously showed me they cared. I thought culture shock going there would be bad, but my blow was cushioned with compassion. The Africans aren't so "poor" after all.

They have only the basics of life, but are rich in love for one another. I crossed over many barriers to get there, and was blessed many times over.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Corner Herbert Nowotny is the new resident to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in August and staff, April Mistric, LVN. Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Moody Flagg and Emma L. Tielke.

We regret the death of Malcolm Tinsley. Malcolm will be missed by our staff and other residents.

A donation by Toro Plata, bananas donated by AARP, cake donated by Sue Yelderman, cake donated by Martha Marx, 21/2 yards of material donated by Lillie Spies and baked goods donated by the Bake Shop and wreaths for- crafts donated by Montie Eversole were greatly appreciated.

The senior citizen social held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix, Louis Smith, Helen Valcik and Hilda Clark.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Ella Eisman, Alice Bergen ' and Merylyn Leus came to have sing - a long with the residents.

Every Tuesday morning, Eula Ganske from Boling came to have bible study with the residents. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortman, Lorene Novosad, Ida Gasch, Ida Sliva and Annie Stavinoha came to play social games with the residents.

The Damon, Catholic, Immanuel, Sunshine and Presbyterian ladies came Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar came to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortman, Melva Hastings and Freda Klawitter come to roll hair.

Monday morning, August 7th, the Good Beginning Day Care children came to sing to the residents.

Thursday morning, August 10th, Patty and Peggy came to sing to the residents.

Monday morning, August 14th, Gladys Hix, Louis Smith, James Little, Edmund Brandi, Hilda Clark and Martha Marx, S.A.D., went riding looking at the beautiful white cotton in the fields and was treated with coke.

Hawaiian Day -- Hawaii became a state on August 18th. Gladys Hix and Louis Smith were celebrating this event at the rest home in Needville, Texas.

Friday afternoon, August 18th was Hawaiian Island Luau. Gladys Hix wore a hula skirt with flowers in her hair and Louis Smith dressed in a loud skirt and beachcomber hat for the

occasion. Everyone wore a Hawaiian Lie. Cake and punch were served to the residents and staff.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of August are Thelma D. Hiller, Callie Manross, Augusta Engeling, Charlie Fishbeck, Rosie Zdunkewicz, Mae Bigham, Theresa Wagger and Pearle Herschap and staff -- Vera Washington, Viola Kutej, Margaret Charanza, Barbara Svatek and Earlean Emerson.

The birthday party was held Friday afternoon, August 25th, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres. The Friedens United Church of Christ provided cakes. The Actions group of the senior citizens of Damon brought a birthday cake for Callie Manross and also came to celebrate her birthday. Both groups and volunteers, Lydia Hortman, Bobbie Bates and Ida Gasch helped serve cake, ice cream and punch to all.

Wednesday evening, August 30th, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of August.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area who give services and communion, also to the volunteers who perform services in the home of our residents.

Antonio Czech Choral Club

Members of the San Antonio Czech Choral Club held their monthly practice at Gevers Hall on August 11th. A delicious meal was served to all members. After the meal, a short meeting was held.

The singing group participated at the KJT Centennial at La Grange, Texas, Saturday, July 1. We also performed at the German - Czech Festival in Schulenburg, August 5. We enjoyed both events. It is always interesting to be a part of such celebrations; you get to meet many people whom ' you know but haven't seen for a long time.

The group will be traveling to the Czech Heritage Celebration in Victoria on October 15th. We also have on our agenda to sing the Holy Mass at the church in Pleasanton, Texas for Father Wagner. After the services and a good dinner at the Golden Corral, we will travel to Floresville, Texas to the nursing home to sing for the residents, some whom we know well.

On September 16th, the group will help celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Svoboda in Floresville, Texas. We wish to thank Father Pesek, pastor of St. Margaret Mary Church, for giving us the opportunity to rent the Gevers Hall where we hold our practices. We also wish to thank the many people in our community who have always supported our group whenever we had our fund - raisers.

Our singing group will be celebrating their 20th anniversary during the first part of the coming year. It is almost unbelievable that we have been together for that period of time. It has been a lot of fun and enjoyment to sing at the many places in Texas. We performed at the Dallas Fair, Ford Bend County Fair in Rosenberg, Texas, also in Corpus Christi and many celebrations throughout the state. Of course, our

priorities have always been performing for the residents at the many nursing homes. To see those beautiful people smile and tap their feet, you know that you have reached them. It gives a person a great satisfaction to see this.

Recently, we have received some new song books from Czechoslovakia.

We hope to learn and sing some of the songs that are popular there at this time. If any of the Czech groups are interested in borrowing the books, we will be happy to share them; write to Dominic Netek, 3907 Skylark, San Antonio 78210.

The Men's Club at St. Margaret Mary's Church is participating in the memorial services that will be held at the St. Margaret Mary's Church on Sunday, November 12th at 9:30 a m The Holy Mass is dedicated to all those who gave their supreme sacrifice for the freedom that we all enjoy in United States. It will begin with the entrance of our national colors, followed by the boy scouts in uniform, followed by the members of the Men's Club; also at the front altar. there will be a display on a table draped with the United States flag, a World War I helmet, World War II helmet and other items that a soldier usually carries with him. A beautiful wreath will be placed at the table, followed by the bugler playing taps. The congregation will then join in singing our National Anthem. The Holy Mass will end by everyone singing God Bless America.

It will be a beautiful service, in remembrance of our buddies who are not with us today. As we all must agree, most of us in this country take freedom for granted. There are many ways that we can show that we CARE, and thank God for the many blessings that we continue to receive. Remember ARMISTICE DAY, NOVEMBER 1 1 th .

There will be a promenade of authentic Czech costumes, dancing of the Czech national dance "Ceska Beseda," children's program, Czech singing, presentation of the American Czech King and Queen (oldest lady and oldest gentleman attending), the longest married American - Czech couple, Czech refreshments, Czech souvenirs, accordian music and much more.

At the Marine Corp Square there will be Sokol exhibition featuring gymnasts from Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth Houston and West.

From The State Youth Director September Vestnik Project The Haag Family BY: APRIL HAAG My name is April Haag. I am in the seventh grade and I have two brothers, Chris and Jonathan. My parents are Roy and Theresa Haag. They own, the Bavarian Village Restaurant in New Braunfels, Texas.

My mother was born in Taylor, Texas and grew up in Granger, Texas.

Her parents were Johnnie I. Bohac and Rosie Zarosky Bohac. Rosie was the daughter of Frank and Theresa Zarosky and grew up in Cameron, Texas. Grandfather Bohac was the son of John and Louise Bohac and grew up in Granger. He was a farmer, rancher and a businessman. He died in January of 1971 at the age of 57. My grandmother was a homemaker and loves to grow flowers. My grandmother lives in New Braunfels with us.

My mother's brothers and sisters are Monica I3ohac, Pat Able, and Johnnie Bohac. Monica is the youngest and works as an interior decorator. Pat is the second youngest and is a real estate agent. Johnnie is the oldest and has four children. Pat, Monica, Theresa and Johnnie were members of the Bohac Sisters Band who traveled

throughout the State of Texas playing polka and waltz music.

Roy is the youngest son of John and Anita Voges Haag. Roy was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in Selma, Texas. He has one brother, Melford J. Haag, who lives in New Braunfels, Texas. Melford has two sons. Grandfather Haag, whom we call Ope (German for grandfather) was the only son of Clara and Otto Haag.

His mother died when he was an infant so he was adopted and raised by his aunt and uncle. He grew up in the Selma area and was a farmer and worked at McArthur Park in San Antonio, Texas. He died on October 30, 1988, at the age of 88.

Grandmother Haag, whom we call Ome (German for grandmother) was one of seven children born to Ida and Richard Voges. She was born and raised at Bulverde, Texas. My Ome and Ope are terrific and it's a lot of fun to be the only girl in the four generations in the Haag family.

Besides owning the Bavarian Village Restaurant, my parents are both musicians and have music teaching degrees. My dad is a former member of the Hi - Toppers Orchestra and now has two bands called "The Lit'l Fishermen Orchestra" and "The

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 66 Waco Donates To Moody Nursing Home Dear Members: Lodge 66 Youth Club met on August 20, 1989. We hd 15 members, 6 adults and 2 visitors present. Our visitors were Lacey and Linkey Tlustos. We hope you enjoyed our meeting and come back to see us soon.

The youth and parents had been on a weekend trip to Six Flags and Wet n' Wild. We spent the night at Motel 6 in Fort Worth. We all had a good time and are looking forward to next year.

By the time this letter is read, we will have been to State Royalty and YAD. Lodge 66 has one entry in Handicraft age 15 - 17, this entry is by Larry Yates. We will also have many Special Category entries.

We will have a float in the Westfest Parade. I want to thank Dorothy Warren for letting us park our float at her home and working on it there.

The youth club donated cookies and punch to the Moody Nursing Home.

We will be making grandparent ribbons on Wednesday, September 6th at the lodge. We will meet at the Elite Cafe at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 7th to take the ribbons to Moody Nursing Home. At our September meeting, we will bring small after shave, mouth wash and handkerchiefs for the men of the nursing home.

Thursday, September 14th at 6:30 p.m., we will practice our program for the lodge anniversary; at this meeting, we will honor the grandparents of our lodge.

The birthday cake was brought by Justin Engelke. The game was brought by the Tierce family. Door prizes were

Dear Readers, Early morning of July 29th, we met at the Scout Hut to get prepared to go to Camp Val Verde. There were six members, namely, Monica Eastwood, Cash Eastwood, Melissa, Joshua and Jonathan Sosa and Jennifer Marek, plus Youth Leaders Kathryn Marek and Betty Jurica. It's a long way to camp (295 miles) but it is always exciting to get ready for the venture that was awaiting us. We always go five miles beyond San Marcos to stop for lunch and this way the youth can relax for a while. There were other youth groups there from San Antonio and Floresville. The Lodge No. 79 youth were detained in San Marcos because of car trouble.

Upon arriving at the camp, Claudette and Tim Reese met us. In the dining hall we got reacquainted with the camp cook, Cornelia with a smile on her face who was glad to see us again.

As soon as rest of the groups arrived, we were assigned cabins and the unpacking began. Kathyrn Marek and I had the Robstown girls and teens from Lodge No. 88, a most wonderful group of girls that I ever was in charge of who were well behaved and friendly.

The first night, we all went to the river where a campfire was burning. marshmellows were toasted over the fire; a skit was performed that included youth, LITs and chaperones.

District V and VU campers at Val Ver de. hunt. The adults were assigned different locations, such as volleyball court (Marie Stayton and I were here), horse stables, river, two - story house, etc., searching for clues to solve a puzzle in the middle of the night.

The next day started with 7:30 a.m. wake up, flag ceremony at 7:50 p.m.

Breakfast was served at 8 a.m. followed by a sing - a - long. The LITs

were in charge of preparing for flag ceremonies, also singing. Groups were divided into age groups and were led by adults and LITs. I enjoyed working with Jill Suggs and Dottie Watkins in the craft hut. First day craft was sponge painting on T - shirts, everyone enjoyed doing this project. Activities included horseback riding (favorite of most) swimming, canoeing, crafts, archery, and dancing.

Sunday night, July 30th was "Backwards Night." It was fun as many of the youth clubbers and leaders participated in dressing backwards. Dancing was a favorite night - time activity; only that the young had to retire earlier for the night which they didn't like.

Monday was just like Sunday, same activities. Craft for this day was kite decorating. There were assorted creations designed and prizes were awarded to a few; of course, they were all good. That night was "Hee Haw" night. Several dressed like hicks, painted freckles, etc. It was a fun night. There was even a bubble gum contest. That night the teens enjoyed going on a "Spooky" hike through the woods, while the juniors danced, then the teens had their turn at swimming and playing volleyball. Refreshments were served and, then it was time to go to bed at 1 a.m.

Tuesday was the last day; after breakfast, it was time to pack and clean up the premises. Each of us was given a balloon, they were released because this year the theme was "Flight." It was a pretty sight. Mr. Dennis Hermis video - taped each camper while we were asked our name and what we enjoyed at camp.

DYC Maxine Pavliska of District VII awarded certificates to best campers, leaders, teen aides, LITs and special people. It was great camping with District V and I hope it can be done next year.

Lodge 47 Seaton Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, The Lodge 47 Seaton Youth Club meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on August 6th by President Jason Reese.

There were 30 members, 10 adults and 5 guests present. The guests were Joann Vaca, Lisa Greger, David FIejl, Rebecca Greger and Jimmy Walters.

The pledge and youth motto were led

by Tommy Gibson.

Our youth club sponsored a swim party in Temple on the night of the 16th, which was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who showed up. We hope you enjoyed it.

Beseda practices were planned for (Thursdays) 10th, 17th and 24th at 6:30 p.m. Make sure that you are able to come for own special craft project on the 24th. This means everyone!

I'm wishing to see all of you at the District II Six Flags' trip September 9th. The meeting place hasn't been decided but, wherever, we will leave about 8 a.m. and leave Six Flags about 10 p.m.

State Royalty will be held at Seaton Star Hall August 26th at 4 p.m.

Afterwards, there will be a dance.

State YAD will be held at the Frank Mayborn Convention Center in Temple on August 27th. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

Birthday wishes for the month go to David Kortis, Jason Smith, Victoria Smith and Tonja Holt. Door prizes were won by Michelle Reese and Sammy Crawford.

FRANTA, age 90, of Crosby, Texas, who passed away July 9, 1989 in Baytown - San Jacinto Skilled Nursing Hospital.

Brother Franta was born in El Campo and came to Crosby with his parents at the age of 12. He was a retired farmer and also from the Harris County Flood Control District and was a member of the Crosby Brethren Church.

Services were held at the Crosby Brethren Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 11 with the Reverend Larry Koslovsky officiating. Burial was in the SPJST Cemetery in Crosby.

Pallbearers were Leonard Twardowski, Carl Buell, Raymond Bielamowicz, Randy Franta, Ronald Warzon and Michael Warzon.

Services were under the direction of White Chapel Funeral Home.

FAREK, who passed away July 10, 1989 at a Fort Worth nursing home, at the age of 92. He was an Army veteran of World War I, a member of All Saints Catholic Church and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Brother Farek was born in Yoakum, Lavaca - DeWitt Counties, in South Texas, and moved to Fort Worth about 1925. He had worked for Armour and Company about 35 years and retired about 1960. His wife, Albina Farek died in 1984. They had been married 48 years.

Survivors include daughters, Sister Jane Marie Farek, CCVI, of St. Louis, Missouri and Bessie Ellsworth of Fort Worth, Texas; son, James R. Farek of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Timothy Farek, Mark Ellsworth, Monica Farek Willenburg, Lisa Ellsworth, Brenda Ellsworth of Fort Worth and Deborah Akins; great grandchildren, Jeffrey Akins, Emily Akins, all of Monroe, Louisiana; sisters, Janie Saunders of Kingsville, Texas and Otelia Gottschling of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at Greenwood Garden Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 12 at All Saints Catholic Church.

Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements were by Greenwood Funeral Home.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star, on behalf of our members express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister LOUISE "LUCY" MAREK, who died Wednesday, July 12, 1989 in a Temple hospital at the age of 82.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15 at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church with the Rev. Albert Myers officiating. Burial was in the Bellwood Memorial Park. A rosary was recited at 5 p.m. Friday, July 14 at Harper Talasek Funeral Home of Temple.

Mrs. Marek attended school in Granger and had been a Temple resident for the past 55 years. She and her husband owned and operated Marek Drug in Temple for 22 years.

She was a member of Lady of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, the Catholic Workman and the KJZT. She had made three pilgrimages to the Vatican with her husband, Louis J. Marek, who died in 1987. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church.

We, the Resolution Committee of Victoria Lodge No. 32, on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother THEODORE "TED" RIPPLE, who passed away July 15, 1989 in a Victoria hospital at the age of 76.

Brother Ripple was born September 10, 1912 in Victoria County to the late James F. and Fannie Geryk Ripple. He had worked as a crane - dragline operator. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 32 and a member of the VFW in Port Lavaca, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Monday, July 17 at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. David Ellis officiated. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Spencer Ripple of Victoria; two daughters, Carlotta Morris of Port Lavaca and Lomonne Reeder of Victoria; two sons, Ronald Ted Ripple of Port Lavaca and Jeffery Paul Ripple of Taylor; a sister, Florrine Heinroth of Sweeny; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Brother Albert Michulka was born in East Bernard on May 8, 1927 to Josef and Frances (Sula) Michulka. He lived in East Bernard all his life, except for the last several years while he was a resident at Wharton Manor in Wharton, Texas.

Survivors include two brothers, Steve Michulka of Rosenberg and Frank G. Michulka of East Bernard; four sisters, Frances Kelner of East Bernard, Bertha Lopez of Perry, Louisiana, Julia Gavranovic of Rosenberg and Dorothy Orsak of El Campo plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were all nephews, Bennie Michulka, Edward Michulka, Robert Michulka, Michael Michulka, George Kelner and Donnie Kelner.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother EDMUND G. MARESH, who passed away July 24, 1989 in Sweetbriar Nursing Home in Brenham following an illness of about six months. He was 71 years old.

Brother Maresh was born April 1, 1918 in Industry, the son of Henry and Lilly (Kaase) Maresh. He was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 68.

On November 25, 1940 he was married to Wilma Schmalriede in Nelsonville. He was a plumber by profession.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on July 26 from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Rev. Albert Michalik officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery of Nelsonville.

Pallbearers were Glen Kaase, Odel Stein, Nathan Zanek, Bill Lyth, Jr., Dr. James Hrachovy and Jimmy Zanek.

Survivors include daughters, Janice Maresh of Nelsonville and Carolyn and Werner Oeser of Brenham; son, David and Grace Maresh of Nelsonville; sister, Elsie Krause of Oak Hill; seven grandchildren, and three great - grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, W.D. Kamas; his wife, Wilma Maresh and a sister, Esther Zanek.

one son, Daniel Hanus of Waco; three sisters, Martha Dulock, Lydia Hanus and Clara Cantrell, all of Waco; one brother, Ernest Navara of Waco; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Sister Hanus was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Hanus, in February 1987. Sister and Brother Hanus were both hard workers and dedicated to the SPJST organization.

They were both very active in RVOS Lodge No. 109.

Sister Matilda was an SPJST member since April 1920.

Reunions Vitek - Pechal Reunion The descendants of Joseph and Thomas Vitek, Martin Vitek, and Josef Pechal will hold a reunion Sunday, September 17, 1989 at SPJST Lodge No. 47 known as Seaton Star Hall. This will be the 29th reunion of the Vitek family and the 8th runion of the Pechal family. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch.
