In Appreciation And Thanks We are at a loss for words in conveying our thanks to SPJST District V Director Louis Hanus for all of the hard work he did in arranging the festive occasion of celebrating the 100th birthday of our mother, Mrs. Annie Baethe.

Dear Members of District III: We hope each of you will make plans to attend the fall meeting hosted

by Lodge No. 135 in Ennis, Texas on September 24, 1989.

The district meeting is so important to our fraternal life and wonderful opportunity to be with brothers and sisters from other lodges for fun and socials, also a chance to exchange ideas and helpful suggestions for your local lodges.

Our lodges are falling short on their attendance and I must stress to all members how important it is to represent your lodge and concerns on the district level.

Uncorrected Minutes Of The SPJST District HI Meeting Held April 16, 1989 At Lodge 6, Cottonwood The April 16, 1989 spring meeting of the SPJST District III was held at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. with Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. president, presiding.

Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was led by Flag Bearer Brother Larry Yates of Lodge 66, Waco.

Welcome to all District III membership and , guests was by Brother Johnnie Krizan of Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

The response was by 1st Vice President Sister Mydell Grochoske of Lodge 180, Burleson.

Minutes of the fall meeting were approved as published after a correction in the treasurer's report.

President Gaidusek, Sr. recognized Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. President Leshikar gave the report from the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Leshikar extended greeting from all officers of the Supreme Lodge. He thanked and congratulated all the sales representatives for their success in insurance sales. He spoke of the fine work being done by the lodge officers, youth leaders and district officers in keeping the business of the Society growing. He spoke in length on the research being conducted by the IRS and Department of the Treasury in regard to our tax - free status, also on the change on the Texas Board of Insurance. He briefed the members on the progress of the Family Recreational Area as proposed at the convention.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik gave his usual fine report; he spoke on changes in interest rates on annunities, sales tax exemptions for local lodges, cooperation among members and officers at the local lodge and on the Fraternalist of the Year contest. In the top 25 sales represetatives District III had five, namely, Arnold Vrla (Lodge 130), Ernest Haskovec (Lodge 25), Johnnie Krajca (Lodge 25), Larry Laznovsky (Lodge 135) and Ben Jarma (Lodge 84). Top producer for the month of March was Emil Petr of Lodge 84. Brother Pokladnik presented checks to the top 3 sales representatives for 1988 -- 1st - Kay Kovar, 2nd - Emil Petr and 3rd - Ben Jarma. He presented a diamond pin to Sales One Million Dollar 2 Johnnie Krizan Representatives (Lodge 6) and Albert Kubala (Lodge 92).

Brother Pokladnik gave his rest home report; he spoke on new state regulations and repairs necessary to comply.

All other District Committee reports were brief in trying to save time for the Horseshoe Pitching contest to be held following the meeting.

Petr, with the help of the youth club members and 2nd Vice President Emma Ceska, was held in memory of our departed members.

Vestnik Editor Rudy J. Sefcik, Lodge 54 West, addressed the membership and guests speaking on insurance sales in regard to members of the Supreme Lodge.

The Auditing Committee consisting of Emil Petr, Albert Kubala and Robert Cervenka reported all books in order.

District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr recognized all youth leaders and their assistants were present, she spoke on YAD, camp and State Royalty; District YAD to be held on June 25th at Lodge 25, Ennis. Camp will be at Camp Val Verde July 20 - 23. State Royalty at Lodge 47, Seaton on August 26th and State YAD at Temple Convention Center on August 27th.

She introduced the new youth club officers for1989 - 90. Lodge 84 will host YAD June 24, 1990.

Nominating Committee consisted of Brother George Pauling (Lodge 66) and Brother Albert Kubala (Lodge 92).

Brother Kubala presented the slate of officers, who were duly elected as follows: President Mydell Grochoske from Lodge 180, 1st Vice President Emma Ceska from Lodge 66, 2nd Vice President Rosemary Banik from Lodge 66, Secretary Justine Andreason from Lodge 84, Treasurer Albert Banik from Lodge 66, District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr from Lodge 84, Assistant Youth Counselor Rosemary Banik from Lodge 66, and Flag Bearer Kevin Dobecka from Lodge 6.

Lodge 135, Ennis was selected as the site of our fall 1989 meeting.

It was decided to have a volleyball and cake bake contest at our fall meeting.

Winners in the quilting contest were: 1st place -- Sister Sophie Pavlas (Lodge 6) 2nd place -- Sister Barbara Jean Hykel (Lodge 6) 3rd place -- Sister Willie Mae Veselka (Lodge 6) We wish to thank the judges who judged this contest.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik installed the newly - elected officers.

The roll call of lodges revealed 107 members present, representing 9 of the 18 lodges in the district.

The meeting was adjourned for the membership present to enjoy the horseshoe tournament contest which was held outdoors.

Our thanks to Lodge 6 in Cottonwood for being so gracious in hosting this very successful meeting.

No. 17, New Tabor

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting on Friday, August 4th at 8 p.m. with officers present, except Martha Trcalek, Susan Skrabanek and Bud Petty.

Gladys Hejl reported that the hall had a break in with losses approximately $300.

Trustees will meet after the meeting to determine what (if anything) can be done to prevent this happening, again.

It was reported by District Director Vavra that Lodge No. 17 had won $100 for a contest held in 1987.

It was agreed to sponsor the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra on September 9th in Caldwell, the Kolache Capitol of Texas.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for departed Brother Robert Vychopen. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all his family, friends and loved ones.

Karel Jonag No. 28, East Bernard Lodge

Dear Members: We begin the final third of this year with the Labor Day holiday weekend which also causes Lodge Karel Jonag to change its September monthly business meeting to the second Sunday, the 10th. The meeting will convene at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. On the agenda, which will follow the standard "Order of Business," will be the regular operational reports and any business needing immediate attention.

Also on the agenda, will be the presentation of the remaining 50 - year membership pins. The recipients are those whose anniversary date is after July 1st. An officer from the Supreme Lodge is due to be present to do the honors.

After the business meeting adjourns, the repast and fraternal hour will convene.

On August 6th, the monthly business meeting convened promptly at 2 p.m. and 48 minutes later all business was finished.

The luncheon convened before 3 p.m. Even though things were rather hurried, those present did make the best of everything. Sisters Haverda, Hanzelka, Kasmir, Kortis, H . Kelner and Nezval added to the items furnished by the lodge. Brothers Lupik and A.J. Kelner also added to this even though both had to leave early.

39 Bryan Schedules Festival Activities Lodge

entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts (with vendors from throughout the state), live music, a Czech museum, kolache, a variety of food booths, children's activities, and much more.

There is no admission charge to the festival, however, we will conclude the day's festivities with a dance featuring the ever - popular polka and waltz music, to which there will be a general admission charge.

This type of event takes many hours of dedication and hard work on the part of our lodge. I will be calling on you for your assistance in various areas as plans continue to progress.

An Invitation To Lodge No. 39, Bryan Festival You are invited to participate in the Annual Arts and Crafts Czech Festival at the SPJST Lodge No. 39 on Saturday, September 30th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bryan, Texas. It will be held on the lodge grounds, off Texas Highway 21 West, near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus (the Smetana community). We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successful than last year.

A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts, live music and dancers, a Czech museum, kolache, children's activities, and much more.

Booth assignments will be made on a first come, first, served basis, upon receipt of application and fee. The application should be completed and returned no later than September 17th.

The DISTRICT II OFFICERS held a meeting to plan the activities for their district fall meeting and fun carnival at Lodge 47, Seaton on September 24th.

Lodge No. 80, Holland Dear SPJST Members and Friends: After a few months of not writing in the Vestnik, I attended the August meeting of our lodge on Sunday, August 6th. My absence was due to my illness and the death of my dear wife, Mary, on March 16th.

Going back to our August meeting, President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The pledge to our flag was given by the members present after the pledge, the president asked all members to remain standing for the moment of silence in memory of our deceased members.

Next order was the reading of the minutes from the July meeting. They were adopted as read by Secretary Treasurer Latham. Reports were also made by Brother Latham and Frankie Pajestka, Jr. from the various departments.

President Bohac thanked all the local members who helped make the District II YAD such a success at our hall.

In other business, Brother Latham mentioned that the roof on part of our hall needed some repair work.

As there was no other business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. to meet on Sunday, September 10th, at 2 p.m.; having it on the second Sunday is due to the Labor Day weekend, the first Sunday.

Winners of the drawing were Joe Barbara, Ligie Ivicic, Rick Benner and Isabela Kunz.

The farmers are harvesting a good crop of milo, some in the 5,000 pounds mark, corn around the 100 - bushel and cotton looks like a bale to an acre.

The wheat didn't do so good due to the late cold and the insects were a problem.

The next few lines, I am going to write will probably be sprinkled with tears because, most of you know, that on March 16th of this year, I had to part with my darling wife after being married 671/2 year.

Mary was a talented person who was an excellent organist and pianist. At one of the RVOS Conventions, she wrote the words and notes to a song she named "My Little Prayer Book," which our granddaughter, Ann Franek, accompanied by brother Jo Jo Franek on the piano that they rendered during the opening of the RVOS Convention; which year it was, I forgot, it was in the RVOS site in Downtown Temple.

So this is partially the life of my dear wife, Mary, who I so greatly miss.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81, Needville was held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 1989.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order. Fourteen members were present.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance members observed a moment of silence for two departed members, Edwin "Booby" Miller and Julius Orsak. We extend heartfelt sympathy to their families.

All officers were present. Minutes of the July meeting were approved as read by Secretary Mary Werner. She also read a letter of thanks from Supreme Lodge President Leshikar for the donation made to the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas.

A letter from Little League Baseball officials was also read, expressing their thanks and appreciation for Lodge 81 sponsorship of a boys' team. We are proud of this team --- the "Reds," for being a winning team!

President Matcek read a letter from Evelyn Mikeska inviting members to District V Family Day to be held on Sunday, September 17th at Lodge No. 88 in Houston. It sounds like a lot of "fun" activities are being planned.

Financial Secretary Werner read her report and Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented the month's financial report. Both were accepted as read.

Brother Gilbert Walzel presented the Special Fund report covering the July activities. His report was accepted as read.

There was no old business to consider.

New business concerned the purchase of a cooking utensil for the kitchen. Sister Benita Walzel will attend to this purchase.

The removal of two cedar trees from the parking lot was discussed. Bids will be taken on their removal.

Dear Members and Friends: First of all, let's check your calendar and see if you have September 17, 1989 as the date of the Lodge No. 84 Czech Fest. Yes, September 17th is the correct date. We invite everyone to come and enjoy this great day of activities. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. consisting of pork roast and gravy, parsley potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans, bread, coffee or tea, and homemade dessert. Catastrophic Act Seminar At Lodge 88

Mr. Harold Thompson, Oak Forest branch manager of United Savings Association in Houston, gave a most interesting short seminar on the new Medicare Catastrophic Act and how it affects those who are 65 years and older.

This presentation was given prior to our regular monthly August meeting.

The agenda included the eligibility of those in the above age brackets.

Hospitalization coverage under the old law and under the new law as well as the medical coverage under both laws was discussed.

Changes in benefits and the cost of the expanded medicare was outlined in a cost chart that was included in an agenda that was given to each member.

There were 120 members present at this meeting.

The Mark Kilroy Foundation benefit dance was a great success, with the help and support of lots of people.

We were able to raise $5,602.50 for the foundation to help fight in the control of drugs.

I want to THANK all the people for their help, donations and work to Brother Irving Theiss, our fraternal activities coordinator, Sister Bobbye Johnson, co - chairperson, for putting this affair together because it took lots of planning and coordinating for the five weeks' time we had to do it in; to Sister Helen Wallace, entertainment chairperson, and the rest of her committee, plus the rest of our committees. I'm proud of all of you.

I'm also proud of our youth club for their help and support; to Brother Louis Hanus, our District V director, for his help and support. He and Brother Homer Alexander (Lodge 88 FAC), also helped in getting the signatures for the foundation. I was amazed by the help and support from the news media, radio stations, and the TV cable outlets; the four bands that donated their music and time, namely: TEXAS BREW TEXAS ROSE TEXAS BORDERLINE RIVER ROAD BOYS Thanks also to a ten - year - old boy who stole the show, a crowd pleaser with his singing ability, namely, Justin Wester from Deer Park, Texas who has a big future a head; auctioneer Jimmy C. Highman and his staff for a splendid job of selling items, The American Business Women of America (Discovery Chapter) for donating food and their help, plus the Pasadena Police for their security.

Yes, there are many I didn't mention by name, but you know what you did or donated food, gifts, etc., which all the help was greatly appreciated.

I was glad to have James and Helen Kilroy here that evening, for they have

a busy schedule; when they left the lodge, they flew to California for an appointment, then on August 15th they were in Washington, D.C. President Bush invited them to meet with him and Director William Bennett of National Drug Control Policy.

I know that James and Helen Kilroy would like to personally thank you for what each one of you have done, but that is impossible. They are glad to accept the $5,602.50 for the Mark Kilroy Foundation, who are the founders.

This was a great experience to all of us, how helpful everybody was. When you asked for donation or help, they all cooperated. I'm proud of our SPJST Fraternal Organization that we can help people when someone needs help and also this helps our United States of America to be a better, safer nation to live in.

Assistant Youth Leader Frances Wheat reported she and Youth Leader Janet Payne had sent out 40 letters with self - addressed, stamped envelopes to camping age members to inform them of camping time. They only had 8 responses, which was very disappointing.

Financial Secretary Mydell Grochoske wishes to express her appreciation to the members for the good response she received for paying the lodge dues.

District III President Mydell Grochoske wants members to remember the District III meeting, which will be held at Lodge No. 135 in Ennis on September 24th.

Wednesday, August 30, 1989—VESTNIK/7 Stavinoha, Ida Sliva, Jean Jacobsen and Cecilia Fernandez came to play social games with our residents.

The ladies from Presbyterian, Immanuel, Damon and Sunshine came on Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar came to have rosary. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortmon, Freda Klawitter and Melva Hastings came to roll the residents' hair.

Monday afternoon, July 10th, the Hope Lutheran Church women and Rev. Jensen of Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and held a social afterwards.

Thursday morning, July 13th, Harriett Legendre came to have a discussion with the residents.

Thursday morning, July 20th, Patty and Peggy came to sing at the home. In the evening, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing. Everyone had a great time.

Gladys Stehle, Josephine Carter and Dorothy Weidner from the First English Lutheran Church, and volunteers Lydia Hortmon, Ida Gasch and Melva Hastings helped serve coffee, punch, cake and ice cream to everyone.

The residents enjoyed all the activities in July.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches in this area who give services and communion and to the volunteers who perform services in the rest home.

The Annual Caldwell Kolache Festival will take place on Saturday, September 9, 1989 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the square in downtown Caldwell plus adjoining streets and businesses.

The day long Kolache Festival will feature continuous entertainment.

There will also be the SPJST Mini Museum from Temple, Burleson County Mini - Museum, Czech Book Store and Gift Shop, Quilt Show, Art Show, William Suehs' Antique Auto Show, Antique Gas Engine and Farm Equipment, Antique Auto Parts Booths, Kolache Eating Contest,

Kolache Bake Shop, Statewide Kolache Bakeoff and other entertainment.

II Held Enjoyable Camp District

Dear Members, I hope each of you who were at Camp Val Verde July 23 - 29 enjoyed it as much as I did. For those of you who were unable to attend this year, I hope you will make plans to be there next year.

This year's camp began with rain, rain, rain; yes, it poured on our arrival, however, it did not last very long and it did make the temperature much cooler. The weather throughout the week was beautiful and cooler than usual.

We had 77 juniors attending the first camp session; along with these juniors were 15 LITs and 20 chaperones.

Thank you to each of you chaperones; you were all so helpful and camp would not have run so smoothly without you LITs; you need to pat yourself on the back for a job very well done. I thank each of you for giving 100 percent to the juniors. The LITs were Denise Edmiston and Charlie Baumback -- Round Rock; Travis McKenney Lovelady; Diane Havalda, Jimmy Sheppard and Tommy Rieger -- Taylor; Tom Bowen and Tiffany Conklin -- Elgin; Mike Vansa, Scott Galey and Donald Tomastik -- Academy; Christy Marek -- Cyclone; Daryl Kortis, Jason Reese and Tonja Holt -- Seaton.

The juniors enjoyed many activities which included dancing, games and singing led by the LITs, swimming, canoeing, archery, horseback riding and hiking.

Keeping with the camp theme "Flight" crafts included the painting of a wooden airplane or a wooden hot air balloon necklace. Each youth also decorated a kite. We have so many artistic youth with various ideas. The evenings concluded with a penny carnival, movies, night hike and the famous shaving cream battle. Junior camp ended with the releasing of balloons. Juniors, you were a great group and we look forward to SPJST Camp 1990!

We continued the week with 30 teens and 10 chaperones. The teen schedule followed similar to the juniors with, of course, less sleep!

Our first evening we had a teen dance with "D.J." Eric Tomastik of Academy Lodge No. 177 entertaining.

Eric, the music, lights and dance were great. Thank you! Other evenings included night hikes and a very interesting scavenger hunt. We had an outdoor movie to prepare us for the hikes. It was great to get to know each of you teens and I look forward to seeing you at other district activities.

Yes, the entire camping period was great, with, no accidents. Thanks to Bobby Tomastik of Academy for being our peri - medic. And, of course,

10/VESTNiK—Wednesday, August 30, 1989 a big thank you to SYD Claudette Reese, Tim's wife, for always being there when needed and helping out in every way. (By the way, did you all know Claudette loves Hershey bars?)

District II enjoyed our lifeguards from our neighboring District I, namely, Susan Spacek and Mike Whitsel. Thanks very much for keeping us safe in the water. We look forward to seeing you, again.

I do have a basket full of clothes, shoes, sheets, etc. left at camp. If you are missing anything, check for your lost items at the fall meeting on September 24th at Seaton.

District II Youth Leaders and Members -- Six Flags, Saturday, September 9th. We plan to leave the Temple Mall in Temple at 7:30 p.m.

We will leave Six Flags at 10 p.m. We

have 3 buses reserved. These buses will be provided to youth and members at no charge by District II. Each member will need to purchase their own ticket.

I need a count of those wishing to ride the bus, as soon as possible. Please contact your youth leader if you plan to ride the bus before September 1st to ensure a seat.

The District II fall meeting will be held September 24th at Seaton Star Hall. I hope each youth will participate in the Christmas Tree Ornament Contest. There are many plans scheduled for this day. Watch the Vestnik for more details.

From The Youth Leaders Hey, Hey, Hey! Ho, Ho, Ho! Districts V And VII Youth Camp A Great Fraternal Success Thanks To Marie, Maxine And Claudette!

Dear Members, This is my third year to attend camp as a parent and chaperone. We camped with District V this year, with 90 campers all together at Camp Val Verde from July 29th to August 1st.

My husband, Robert Suggs, attended this year for the first time and enjoyed teaching archery. He plans bigger and better things next year in archery. Robert said he enjoyed SPJST Youth Camp a lot and making new friends from Districts V and VII and looks forward to renewing their friendship next year.

Robert Suggs and Ed Mabry were the cabin chaperones for the teen boys' cabin; you can imagine they had their hands full.

Last year I stayed with the younger boys and teen boys but I had a change this year. I stayed in the teen girls' cabin. They were a great group of girls.

Attention: Lodge 47, Grandparents Remember, on Tuesday, September 5, 1989 following the 7:30 p.m. mother lodge meeting, the Seaton Youth Club will host a reception and program honoring all grandparents.

We invite all grandparents, even if your grandchild is not a youth club member, to be present. Our youth members are very excited about making this evening extra special for Grandparent's Day. We hope to see you.

I also had the fine opportunity of meeting and working with District V's Youth Counselor Marie Stayton. We had a fun time inspecting the camp cabins; just like the last time I attended camp as a camper and as LIT in 1972, saying good - bye was hard.

Speaking for all my youth club members and family attending camp -- "Thank you Districts V and VII for the fellowship we shared and enjoyed.

Lodge 30 Taiton Youth Enjoy Camp Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30 Taiton attended District.

VI camp July 7 to 9 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. We had a total of 42 campers who attended. This year's camp was one of the best and was enjoyed by all We arrived Friday at 1:30 p.m.

After getting settled into our cabins and going over the rules, the boys and girls enjoyed swimming and canoeing for their first activity.. Then, after supper, the campers enjoyed decorating kites to go along with the flight theme. Afterwards, we had a parade of kites to show what they had made, at night the campers had fun playing games that we learned at LIT Retreat. We then went to the campground area and sang songs around the campfire. Afterwards, we had a hike backup to the campsite where we had refreshments, and then it was time for bed.

Dear Members, This year was my first time to participate in District I YAD. District I YAD was held Sunday, August 6, 1989 in Caldwell, Texas, and it was an exciting experience for me. Even though it took a lot of time making craft projects and a lot of practicing for Individual and Group Talent, it was a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed seeing all my friends who I met at Camp Val Verde this summer. It was truly a fun day.

For crafts, the girls, made wooden necklaces and the boys made wooden airplanes. That afternoon everyone went swimming. After supper the LITs began planning our annual last night party. This year's party was "Jamaican Me Crazy." Those appearing at the Jamaican Me Crazy Night Club were back by popular demand, The Beach Boys singing Kokomo, which consisted of Vern Hegwood, Bobby Allbritton, Landis Dornak, Danny Borak and Darren Dybala. Next appearing singing "Dayo" was Darren Dybala. We then had Tigra and Bunny with the "Cars That Go Boom," who were Valerie Roye and Tracy Krpec. Also appearing was Bobby McFerrin singing "Don't Worry Be Happy" portrayed by Landis Dornak with backup singers Vern Hegwood, Bobby Allbritton, Danny Borak and Darren Dybala.

Special guest appearance singing the "Leader of the Pack" were Jennifer Dluhos, Marcy Dorotik and Stephanie Roye. The entertainment ended with a train to Louie, Louie around the pool.

The evening then continued with a skit entitled "Sucker on a Stick."

Participants were Eric Motal and Jody Krpec as the suckers. Those helping LITs with the skit were Craig Dornak, John Richardson and Crystal Roye.

One other skit performed was the "Statue Skit" which included Bradley Krpec, Jessica Bond, Michael Kaspar, Lenice Kaspar, Vern Hegwood and Rosann Zalman.

The night ended with the limbo and watermelon as refreshments. The campers then enjoyed swimming before going to bed.

Sunday morning, after breakfast, we had our balloon lift - off which was very touching. Afterwards, the campers enjoyed free time which

consisted of swimming and canoeing.

We then had dinner and packed up and all headed for home.

I would like to thank President Howard Leshikar, his son, also Directors Matt Vanek and Andrew Vavra for coming Saturday evening to visit with us at camp and have supper with us. We appreciate you taking the time to come visit with us at camp. I would also like to give special thank you to our State Youth Director Claudette Reese. Thanks for your help at camp and thanks for all the time you spent helping us put together our camp. We really appreciate everything you do for us, Claudette. I would also like to give a special thanks to our District Youth Counselor Anita Roye and Assistant DYC Karen Kaspar; without the two of you, we wouldn't be able to have camp. Thanks for all the time you took in preparing and putting camp together, because all your hard work paid off. This year's camp was one of the best, thanks!

Many thanks also to all the chaperones who went, they were Rosann Zalman, Wanda Dorotik, Mary Ann Karasek, Donna Munoz, Landis Dornak and Johnny Richardson (thanks for helping watch over all the kids) and thanks to all the LITs for their help with the activities and parties. This year's LITs were Jennifer Dluhos, Stephanie Roye, Marcy Dorotik, Kim Kacal, Darren Dybala and Danny Borak.

I would like to give one last thank you to two very special people, namely, Vern Hegwood and Bobby Allbritton, our lifeguards. Thanks, guys, for coming all the way just to be with us and help out at camp because camp wouldn't be the same without you.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On Saturday, July 29, 1989, members of both Districts V and District VII began four fun - filled days of SPJST Youth Camp at Camp Val Verde in McGregor, Texas. This year's camp, I have to admit, had to be the best I have ever attended in my five years of going to camp. Everything was great. Let me share with you some of the exciting activities we participated in.

Saturday, after getting settled in each of our cabins, we began the festivities. LITs Angie Clayton, Rusty Condra, Chris Haag, Keith Kieschnick, Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, James Pruitt, Crystal Wallace and Tommie Wallace led the ceremony. Two of our new campers, Darrell and Kara, one chosen from each district, distributed the ashes of last year's camp fire into the flames of this year's. Then it was time for the much - looked - forward - to initiation. We had many new campers, one of which was Lodge No. 88 Youth Leader Barbara Linney. After the campers enjoyed toasting marshmallows in the fire, LITs Darlene Migl, James Pruitt, Michelle Linney, Angie Clayton, Rusty Condra and Marlene Migl entertained the campers with a skit in which they learned at LIT Retreat. Even the adults had the privilege of participating.

Then it was time to head back to camp for a teen hike to Christy's Crossing, led by Mr. Tim Reese and a junior swim. Then it was off to a scavenger hunt through the woods and all over the camp grounds searching for clues to solve a puzzle in the middle of the night. Claudette Reese's group got back first, while Betty Doeppenschmidt's group and Kathryn Marek's group soon followed. By the time we got back, it was time to go to the cabins and go to bed.

Wake up time was 7:30 a.m., but that time mostly everyone was up and ready for the day's activities. After singing some songs, we were all split up into groups and off to our first activity. I was the LIT of Group No. 5, a group which consisted of the newer LITs and older teens. Members of my group included Jackie Burleson, Angie Clayton, Rusty Condra, Monica Eastwood, Chris Haag, Keith Kieschnick, Michelle Linney, Charlie Majek, Jennifer Marek, James Pruitt and Stephanie Rebecek. Kathyrn Marek was our leader. When I say that we had a great time, I'm sure I'm speaking for the whole group, all 13 of

us. Activities included horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, dancing, crafts and archery. For dance we learned the Beseda, while the younger groups learned dances such as •the popcorn and chicken dance, the game waltz and more. In crafts, we made T shirts, kites and some even made pillowcases.

The night - time activities had to be the highlight of our stay at camp.

Everyone enjoyed participating in the many games, contests and activities.

There were even dances. The first night was entitled "Backwards Night." All the campers, as well as LITs and adults got into the spirit of the evening and tried to wear as much as they could backwards. It was great! The next night was called "Hee Haw Night."

Everyone also enjoyed coming dressed as a hick, complete with freckles, plaid and boots.

On Monday night, many of the teens enjoyed going on a "spooky" hike through the woods to such places as Christy's Crossing and the two - story house. Afterwards the LITs along with a few teens went for a swim and played some volleyball before having to go to bed at 1 a.m.

The next morning we received a special surprise. Sixteen of our youth who had learned the Beseda, danced for the campers and adults. Then came time for the balloon release. We all enjoyed sharing our favorite experience or activity from camp, while Mr. Dennis Hermis videotaped each of us. Someday we will enjoy looking back and seeing what an exciting time we all had at camp together.

I really had a great time at camp. I hated to see the bus come for us to head back to Houston. I made a lot of friends with whom I hope to keep in touch. Thanks to SYD Claudette Reese, District VII DYC Maxine Pavliska, District V DYC Marie Stayton and, of course, SL President Howard Leshikar for making my final year as an LIT the best! I'll never forget it. I don't know what I'll do when it comes time for me to leave the youth club. I guess I'll just have to come as a chaperone.

District VI YAD Held In Hillje Dear Vestnik Readers, District VI YAD was held on August 13, 1989 in Hillje. Lodge No. 40 El Camp - Hillje Youth Club hosted this event.

In Royalty Competition Darren Dybala, of our lodge, was named District VI King; his duke is Jared Dybala. Also in the Royalty Competition were Kim Kacal and her duchess, Lisa Reck. They placed second in the Queen's contest.

In Individual Talent we had three participants; Lisa Reck placed third in the 6 - 9 category with a jazz dance to the "Locomotion." Kim Kacal placed first in the 15 - 17 age group with a dramatic reading of "Don't Let Go." Also participating in 10 - 12 talent was Jennifer Reck.

Lodge No. 40 took second place honors in both the scrapbook and poster contests.

Point winners of Lodge 40 are as follows: Juniors -- 1st - Jody Krpec, 2nd - Sharon Borak, 3rd (tie) - Lisa Morris and Jared Dybala, 4th - Martha Bartos, 5th - Lisa Reck. Teens -- 1st Kim Kacal, 2nd - Danny Borak, 3rd Darren Dybala, 4th - Lori Holub.

In the Craft Competition, age 6 - 9, Lisa Reck placed third in Handicraft.

Jared Dybala also placed third in Hobby Kits.

In 10 - 12 craft, Jody Krpec placed second in Handicrafts and third in Science - Educational. Martha Bartos placed second in Needlecraft and third in Foods. Sharon Borak placed third in Hobby Kits.

In 15 - 17 craft, Kim Kacal placed first in each of the following: Handicrafts, Hobby Kits, Needlecraft, and Science - Educational. Darren placed first in Foods, and Danny Borak received first in Constructed Items and second in both Foods and Pictorial Arts.

I think our youth club did an outstanding job this year.

A special thanks to all of those who helped us out by making donations to the kitchen. Without the help of our dedicated members, we would not have had such a successful afternoon.

The August 20, 1989 meeting of Lodge 66 Youth Club was called to order at 2:24 p.m. by President Jessika Tierce.

Michele Pruitt led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were 14 members and 7 adults present.

Guests introduced were Lacy and Lindsey Tlustols.

The minutes were read and approved.

Fund raising plans for this month are Thursday and Friday to make a float for Westfest Parade.

This month's social is making a float at Dorothy Warren's house on Thursday and Friday nights.

The charity project for this month will be Grandparent's Day for Moody Nursing Home. We are to meet at Elite at 2 p.m. on September 6th.

reported that we need to practice for the lodge's birthday Thursday, September 14th from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

The after meeting activity was on how much money in the bag.

He was born September 5, 1914, the son of Frank and Mary (Sebesta) Jakubik. He was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of the The membership of Lodge No. 9, Snook Brethren Church and had served on the Board of Elders for over Snook expresses our sincere sympathy 20 years. He was a member of Lodge to the bereaved family of RAYMOND C. SCHOPPE, 9, Snook and held every office in the age 78, of Lyons, who died July 6, local lodge and was a sales representative for over 40 years. He 1989 in a Brenham nursing home.

Mr. Schoppe was born April 9, 1911 was also District I Sales Representative for over 6 years, District I president in Lyons, Texas. He was the son of John and Helena (Klayman) Schoppe, and made six SPJST Conventions.

He loved to hunt, fish and play a lifetime resident of Lyons, who dominoes. He married 011ie Shenkir owned and operated Schoppe's on November 24, 1938 in Temple. He Grocery of Lyons for 15 years. He was was preceded in death by his parents, 2 a member of Lodge 9, Snook and a tin brothers, Henry and Lear Jakubik and smith and made cisterns, farmed and 2 sisters, Lydia Hubenak and Mitilda ranched, also worked for the AF&SF Treating Plant.

A Funeral Mass was held July 9 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat with Msgr. Ray Widicki officiating. Interment followed in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Frenstat.

Brother Zajicek was born in Vernon, Texas. He married Elsie Sebesta in 1933 and moved to Fort Bend County, where he worked as a farmer until he retired. He loved gardening and loved to work with machinery.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 19 at the Davis - Dawson Funeral Home Chapel, in. Rosenberg, with Rev. Henry Beseda of Caldwell officiating. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Rosenberg.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Zajicek; one daughter, Delores Mikeska of Rosenberg; two grandsons, Keith and his wife, Aimee of Orchard and Billy Mikeska of Houston; two great grandchildren; one sister, Annie Hershman of Vernon; three brothers, Leo Zajicek of Quanah, Joe Zajicek of. Brother Baleja was born March 12, 1909 to John and Ida (Lugo) Baleja, the 11th of 12 children. In September 1940, he was married to Anna Foytik.

Brother Baleja worked at Cyclops Steel Company for 25 years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Baleja; two daughters, Joann Channon and Millie Sypien; four grandchildren, Wendy, Edward, Kimberly and Erick; five great grandchildren; his older brother, Frank, 83 years of age, of Dearborn, Michigan.

Brother Baleja was laid to rest Thursday, May 25 at Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery after funeral services at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Melvindale, Michigan.

Mr. Polak, a farmer for many years in the Bernard Prairie area and a 21 year employee with Tenneco, was born

His wife, the former Lydia Sikora, whom he married in 1924, preceded him in death 17 years ago.

She was born to Joseph and Karolina Hruby on April 11, 1905 in Schulenburg, Texas.

A 1921 graduate of East Bernard, she went to work at Union State Bank, and married Joseph C. Hlavinka in 1925. They began a family business that has been perpetuated to the present day.

She was active in Holy Cross Catholic Church, was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was financial secretary for the KJZT for 40 years.

The Joseph C. and Annie C. Hlavinka Presidential Scholarship at Texas A&M University has been endowed in their honor.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery with Monsignor Michael J. Krol, celebrant and Father foe Shannon and Father Henry Rachunek officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph C. Hlavinka of East Bernard; four sons, William J. Hlavinka and Joseph C. Hlavinka, both of East Bernard, Charles J. Hlavinka and Victor F. (Lydia) Zabcik were held May 29, 1989 at the Ocker Brethren Church with Rev. Albert Michalik, Rev. Eugene Kotrla and Rev. James Parks officiating.

Lydia Zabcik was born to William and Elizabeth Brandt Hejl in Sealy, Texas on October 12, 1900. She attended schools at Cyclone, Leedale and graduated from Seaton Independent School. In 1919, at the urging of her teacher, she attended State Teachers College at Huntsville, Texas, receiving a teaching certificate and taught school at Taiton, Wharton County and Lost Prairie, Bell County.

Mrs. Zabcik married William A. Zabcik on June 28, 1922 and they farmed in the Zabcikville community all their life. She and her husband were active members in the Ocker Brethren Church at Zabcikville, where she was a charter member of the Ocker Christian Sisters and also served as secretary of the State Christian Sisters. She taught Sunday School class and also taught the Czech language to children during the summer. She was active in The Texas Extension Programs since the thirties. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Zabcik, in 1972.

Survivors are two sons, Lee Zabcik of Zabcikville and Franklin Zabcik of Temple and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Ocker Brethren Church, Route 1, Burlington, Texas 76519.

Snook Youths Receive Scholarships Donna D. Schoeneman and John W. See, III, members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, Texas, were each awarded an $8,000, four - year Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 4 - H Scholarship in special ceremonies at the Texas 4 - H

Roundup in College Station on June 6th.

Donna, daughter of Marie and Melvin Schoeneman of Snook, graduated as valedictorian of her class.

During her nine years in 4 - H, Donna received state honors for her method demonstations about photography and computers. Photos of her photography project were exhibited at the National 4 - H Exhibit in Chicago. Donna also received the Gold Star Award.

While in high school, Donna served as secretary of the Future Homemakers of America as president of the National Beta Club. She was a member of the varsity volleyball, tennis and softball teams and was named to the all - state volleyball academic team. Donna plans to major in agricultural economics at Texas A&M University.

John See, III John, son of Dorothy and John See, of Snook, graduated as salutatorian of his class. As an active 4 - H member for eight years, John received the Danforth, "I Dare Your Award" and Gold Star Awards. He served as club and county council president and represented his county on the district council. He received state honors for his illustrated talks on poultry and safety.

While in school, John was an outstanding athlete. He was on the basketball, track, baseball and cross county teams. He served as president of his senior class, president of Beta Club. John plans to major in agricultural economics at Texas A&M University this fall.

The 4 - H Scholarship recipients were chosen by members of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. The selected students all demonstrated academic excellence and strong leadership skills throughout their high school careers and were among 50 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 4 - H Scholarship winners honored.

In presenting the 4 - H Scholarships, Show President Hal Hillman commented on the show's ongoing commitment to the youth of Texas.

"Although the Houston economy has its ups and downs in recent years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's commitments to youth and education have remained strong. We are proud of our record - setting 1989 Show, but we are prouder of the fact that our efforts have made it possible for these outstanding 4 - H Scholarship recipients to continue their education.

These young people represent the show's investment in the future.

Both John and Donna have participated in youth activities at their local lodge, District I and State Youth Achievement Days. They have held various offices in their youth club.

Both were also recipients of the SPJST Merit Point Scholarship.
