REMEMBER TO ATTEND STATE ROYALTY -- Saturday, August 26 at Lodge No 47 (Star Hall) in Seaton on Highway 53, east of Temple; also attend next day (Sunday, August 27th), STATE YAD at Frank Mayborn Convention Center, 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple. Spend a moment affirming all the wonderful things in store for you.

"What wonderful things"? you may ask. "My life is full of problems!" Of course, you have problems --- everyone does at one time or another --- but if you regard your problems as a challenge rather than a deterrent, the remainder of the year will be terrifically different for you Here is something for you to do.

Don't mull over the past. Extract what know - how it may have contained, then forget it. Look ahead --- never back. And have a goal, not a fuzzy one, but a sharp, clearly - defined goal.

Hold it in the conscious mind until it sinks into the unconscious, and when it gets into the unconscious, you have it; and it has you. Remember, what you think in the time ahead will determine precisely what you are and the kind of world you live in. How you think determines what you become.

You can transform yourself and your life by renewing your thoughts. If you are pessimistic about the future, don't be. Change your thoughts -continue thinking hopefully and look for opportunities in every difficulty instead of difficulty in every opportunity. How you look at a problem makes all the difference.

Your editor is reminded of a line from a poem which goes like this: "Two men look out the same window; one sees mud and the other sees stars." It is an interesting phenomenon how two people view the same situation so differently, according to how they think.

Have you thought about why some people say a day is partly sunny and others, commenting on the same day, will say it is partly cloudy? It is the optimist who remembers the sunshine while the pessimist can only remember the dark clouds. Or if a glass of water is half full, the optimist will think of it that way. But the pessimist will say, "It's half empty."

Recently, your editor met an old acquaintance he hadn't seen for some time. "How have you been?" I asked.

"Oh, not bad," he sighed sadly. "You mean things could be better?" I asked.

"Well, actually, things are pretty good. But it can't go on this way for long!" he explained.

It's really comical how this fellow, who has always been a bit of a pessimist, just couldn't think of his life as very good; rather the described things as not bad. With that type of attitude, and his fear that things are bound to go wrong, he may easily think himself into defeat.

Think of things as good and they will likely turn out that way. Do a rehabilitation job on your thoughts

and begin living with joy. Don't allow yourself to become discouraged or negative. Often we tend to blame external factors for our failures. But the place to look is within ourselves; in the type of thoughts we think.

Remember Kipling's poem: "If you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run -yours is the Earth and everything that's in it. And -- which is more -you'll be a Man, my son!"

Therefore, start being an optimist and love every minute of the remainder of the year because it was made for you! ***

Although last week our time was not burdened, with publishing an August 16th Vestnik issue, the mail kept coming in and it is best to process it as soon as possible (or it will accumilate faster than a person realizes) and with Westfest just a few days in the future, time really flew by quicker than one thinks! There are a few new groups in the Cultural - Heritage Area, a Taroky Tournament is added and supervised

by Brother Ernest Bezdek, vice president of West Bank and Trust and also SPJST Lodge 54 member, so you are encourged to attend. (For more information refer to the Westfest ad on page 18).

We have just received some very nice brochures of the Czech Fraternal Fest for October 1st from Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir; we will publish more about the fraternal fest in the future.

Possibly some of our members and readers can find well - paying temporary jobs with the Census Bureau starting this fall. The agency is offering part and full - time hourly work throughout the country to prepare and conduct the 1990 census.

No medical or other benefits are offered, but wages are about $5 to $8 an hour, considerably more than the $3.35 minimum hourly wage. The bureau plans to hire about 300,000 census takers to go door - to - door gathering demographic information, usually in their own neighborhoods.

The fieldwork runs from April through July 1990, and workers can apply now for jobs.

Another 150,000 people are needed for office work, with many of those positions becoming available in October and lasting through December, 1990. The bureau is encouraging older and handicapped workers and working parents to apply for these jobs, and it will allow most workers to set flexible schedules as long as they work at least 20 hours a week. Census employees need not be U.S. citizens. However, they must be at least 16 years old and take a written math and English exam to qualify. To find out where to apply in your area, call the Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland at (301) 763 - 7662. ***

Parents whose children are taking prescription vitamins should scrutinize the pills. A batch of Goldline Poly Vitamins with Fluoride has been recalled by the manufacturer and the Food and Drug Administration after the discovery that some of the pills contain dangerously high levels of vitamin D. The buff - colored, orange flecked chewable tablets are marked "SL320" and should be discarded. ***

To Host District II Fall Meeting

Seaton

Dear District II Members: This is a reminder of our District II fall meeting which will be held Sunday, September 24, 1989 at Seaton Star Hall Lodge No. 47 in Seaton, Texas.

The day will begin at approximately 1 p.m. with registration, then a short business meeting promptly at 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. The games will begin at 3 p.m. and last until 5 p.m. The door prizes, announcements of contest winners and auction of winning pastries will be from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Supper will be at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Same as last year, 20 FREE tickets for games will be given to each registered person. Those registering after 2:30 p.m. will NOT receive free tickets. Extra tickets will be available at 10 for $1. There will be a Quilt Contest and Kolach Contest inside the hall. I have enclosed rules on these, as well as the Horse Shoe Contest, also held that afternoon. There will be prizes awarded for each contest. They are:

FIRST PRIZE --- $25 SECOND PRIZE -- $10 THIRD PRIZE --- $5 NOTE: The winning kolache will be auctioned off.

A drawing will be conducted.

Tickets may be bought at the door at 5 for $1, along with the usual door prizes that you will be in on when you register.

There will be a fish pond and bean bag throw for the young children and a volleyball game for the teens. We will also have a cake walk, along with a country store that you will be able to use your tickets on.

After the fun we will have supper.

We are planning on having a great afternoon and hope you will come and enjoy the fun - planned for the day, but, we will be needing everyone's support in any way they can. We are asking that each family bring canned goods for the country store, a cake for the cake walk, along with a salad and dessert for the evening meal.

District II is also asking the lodges in the district to consider a monetary donation to help defray the cost. Any amount will be appreciated -- $25, $50, /5 or $100.

We have several lodges lined up for working that day. If your name and lodge is listed below, be ready to work: Seaton Lodge 47 -- Members will be in charge of registration and door prizes Ladis Navratil and Lodge 87, Temple -- In charge of the drawing Ronnie Rieger and Lod ge 29, Taylor -- Take care of getting the contests and registration set - up DYC Patsy Koslovsky, youth leaders and assistant youth leaders of each lodge will be in charge of indoor games. All youth club members will be asked to work in game areas.

Lynn Tschoerner, Jerry Cabla and Lodge 24 -- Will oversee the Horseshoe Contest These people will be asking members of their, lodge for help. Please be available.

As I stated before, I have enclosed all contest rules, so be sure and read up on them, beforehand. We are hoping to make this one of the biggest meetings ever.

QUILT CONTEST Should be an SPJST member Made by an individual Should be made within 2 years Pierced or appliqued Judging

1. Uniformity of stitch 2. Design of color 3. Neatness 4. Full, queen or king size 5. Quilt will be folded on a table WINNER MUST BE PRESENT 1989 HORSESHOE RULES Field: To make a playing field you need an area about 10 feet wide and about 50 feet long.

The stakes should be iron. They extend eight inches above the ground and are included slightly toward one another. They are 40 feet apart. For women the distance is 30 feet. In order to use the same court, just put a ribbon marker 10 feet ahead of each stake, that ribbon will mark the place from which the women will toss their horseshoes.

Horseshoes: Regulation horseshoes are 71/2 inches long and 7 inches Wick at the

widest part. The opening at the calks should not exceed 31/2 inches. Weight is 2'/ pounds. The calks should not exceed 3/4 of an inch.

Rules: 1. Earth should be soft around the peg.

2. To determine what side begins the game, each player throws one horseshoe toward the peg. The closest will start the game. After that the winner always shoots first.

3. A member must be 18 years of age to compete in this contest.

4. There is only one category in horseshoes. It is not separate for the men and women. They play together.

The only difference is that the women throw their horseshoe from a 30 - foot distance.

5. Points are scored as follows: a. One point for each shoe nearest the peg. b. A leaner counts three points. c. Five points are scored for a ringer. d. Twenty - five points constitute a game.

Description of Point Counting: If the opponent also has a leaner, the two are tied and no point is allowed.

A ringer is a shoe that fits around the peg, so that both prongs are round the peg. (A straight edge must be able to touch both calks beyond the peg.)

If one player scores a ringer, and an opponent throws another ringer on top of it, both scores are cancelled and the other two shoes are measured, to see which player gets one point.

If a player has two shoes closer to the peg than the opponent, he receives two points.

If a horseshoe slides unto the peg regardless of distance, it is permissible.

SPJST KOLACHE CONTEST Guidelines: 1. The SPJST Kolache Baking Contest is open to all SPJST members of non - professional status. Non professionals are considered those who do not sell kolache through a bakery or other establishment.

2. Kolache must be of a scratch yeast dough.

3. Entries must consist of 6 average size kolache of the same filling on a disposable tray or plate.

4. Kolache entries must be made by one person, no team entries.

5. All kolache may be sold after the event and proceeds will be donated to the district fund.

6. Winner must be present at the announcement of awards.

7. The first place winner cannot compete the following year, but may compete the years after. Example: If 1988 Winner -- will not be eligible in 1989; if 1991 Winner -- will not be eligible in 1992, etc.

JUDGING CRITERIA Appearance - Uniform in size and shape filling substantial, not skimpy evenly browned on top and bottom -15 points Moisture - Slightly moist -- 10 points Lightness - Light -- 10 points Color -Even, golden brown outside creamy white inside -- 10 points Texture - Moderately fine, uniform elastic, springs back -- 15 points Flavor - Dough, sweet and nutty -40 points Fruit Fill -- Sweet, pleasing texture Cheese -- Sweet, not crumbly Poppyseed -- Sweet Sausage -- Moist, not greasy SPJST-

Notice To District V Members "The officers of District V held their pre - fall meeting to set the agenda and_ makeplans for the District V Family Day fall meeting.

The following is a' reprint of a letter we mailed to all the presidents of all the lodges in District V. In case you do not attend a meeting at your lodge during the month of August or early September, we wanted you to see what we have planned for September 17th DISTRICT V FAMILY DAY Greetings: The officers of District V wish to extend a special invitation to you and the membership of your lodge to attend the District V Family Day fall meeting to be held Sunday, September 17, 1989 at Lodge 88 in Houston.

This will be a covered dish meal with free beer and soft drinks, tea and coffee. The free beer will begin at 12:00 and the meal will be served at 1:00. The District will furnish the barbecued beef and chicken, so your membership is requested to bring a vegetable, and/or salad, and/or dessert.

We believe we have planned an interesting afternoon. The regular meeting of District V will be as brief as we can make it. Contests have been planned that will include first, second and third prize ribbons with a first prize cash prize for anyone wishing to enter. The contests will be for "Best Kolache" and for "Prettiest Quilt."

(Note: the quilt contest will be for display and judging; not for sales.) To enter the kolache contest, bring 6 kolache.

Another interesting activity will be the "Spinning Wheel." We feel sure most of you are familiar with this activity. Those who wish to participate on the spinning wheel are asked to bring two or more items of canned goods or other staples, and those donating items will be given 10 free tickets for the spins of the wheel. After free tickets are used up, or if you don't have any free ones, you can still participate for 10 cents each spin of the wheel. At past District V meetings, this has been a lot of fun, so bring your merchandise for prizes and join in this activity.

At 3:30 Lodge 88 has graciously consented to open their pool, with lifeguards furnished, for anyone who wishes to swim until 5:00.

There will be a display of youth ornaments and achievements, so if your group wants to bring anything for display, have them contact District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton.

Registration for the day will begin at 12:00. Urge your membership to come out and be a part of our Family Day fall meeting.

We would appreciate it if you could poll your membership for the number you think might be in attendance on September 17th and send this information to President Evelyn Mikeska by September 10th. We invite the lodges and individual members to make donations of money, soft drinks, or whatever to help with the District V Funds.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Scholarship Recipient Lanette Dobeeka is accepting a check from Bobby Dobecka, which is being presented to her by Bobby Debeeka on behalf of the mother lodge.

Lodge No . 6, Cottonwood Our monthly meeting was held Friday, August 4th at 8 p .m. which was opened by President Johnnie Krizan.

Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto were led by Tammi Dobecka.

All of us remained standing for. a moment of silent tribute to our departed member, Frankie Lee Uptmore.

Then remarks by President Krizan were given with thanks and appreciation to the families who prepared the good meal for our supper before the meeting. The cooks were Raymond and Mary Marek, Henry and Christine Matus, the meal consisted of baked pork roast with gravy, sausage, ham, baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, sauerkraut, pickles and cole slaw. Sweets such as strudel, Bundt cake, pecan pie, peach cobbler and some type of good pudding were brought by other members. I didn't get the name of the pudding. This meal was like a real party treat; don't you wish you had been present? You are always welcome.

The minutes of our last meeting were read by Peggy Dobecka in absence of Secretary Barbara Jean Hykel. There was no treasurer's report. Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report and he also gave the report of the last Board Trustees' meetingand, at this meeting, Vice President and FAC Robert Dobecka announced that there will be two appreciation parties for our workers of the lodge this year; one to be held in August and the other some time later, this is all I know about this at this writing.

We receivedthank you notes, from the Supreme Lodge, West Library and Frankie Lee Uptmore family.

All the committees that were in charge of our picnic, gave their thanks and appreciation to all who helped and donated to the picnic. As I stated in my last letter, the picnic was a great success and the attendance was good.

Those who work in the kitchen would like to express their appreciation, too, and a thank you to Raymond and Mary Marek for installing the telephone in our kitchen which is handy for us now. They also made the donation, isn't this nice?

Lodge 6 made donations to some churches and neighboring society.

We had one transferee to our lodge from Lodge 130, Dallas; namely, Eifie Meranda. We welcome her and we hope she and husband, Rudolph, and daughter, Evelyn, and her family will come visit us and attend our socials.

The presentation to Lannette Gerik scholarship was from the lodge and not from the Robert Dobecka family (Teresa Dobecka Memorial Fund).

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported on all the youth club games that were at our picnic and she wants to send big thank yous to all who helped, donated for the social games and other games.

Now, they started baking sausage kolache and apple strudel at the hall for Westfest. Next will be the baking of 576 loaves of homemade bread the week before WestfestDays (September 2 and 3). George and Josie Mae Straten will also be in charge of cooking over 900 pounds of potatoes for the sausage boat speciality consisting of pork sausage, potatoes, sauerkraut and home - baked bread; we will sell this at our Westfest booth on Saturday, September 2nd and Sunday, September 3rd.

If anyone would like to help peel over 900pounds of potatoes when they start, feel welcome to help out any day.

More discussion and arrangements on this later.

Our next Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, September8th at 8 p.m. and the lodge meeting is back to Sunday, September 10th at 1 p.m.

Prior to the meeting, a dinner will be served prepared and cooked by Bill and Georgia Skerik.

At our last meeting, the door prize was won by Robert Dobecka who was present.

Lodge No. 29 Taylor To Hold Championship Tarok Tournament The Championship Tarok Tournament will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor on Saturday, September 16th.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., play starts at 9:30 a.m. There will be a limit of 100 players and everyone is welcome.

Lodge No. 31, Yoakum Has Meeting SPJST Lodge No. 31 of Yoakum met on Sunday, July 16, 1989 at the First State Bank Meeting Room.

President Monta Foster presided and opened the meeting. The pledge to the flag was recited.

Many items of important business were discussed. President Foster asked those present to encourage members to check and make sure all the members' policies are in order and up - to - date; also to urge members to come to the meetings.

Lodge 39 Bryan Schedules Festival Activities Dear Fellow Lodge Members: Plans for our second Annual SPJST Arts and Crafts CzechFestival are now underway. The event has been scheduled for Saturday, September 30th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the lodge grounds. Weare hoping that this year's festival will be even more successfulthan last year. A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts (with vendors from throughout the state), live music, a Czech museum,

kolache, a variety of food booths, children's activities, and much more.

There is no admission charge to the festival, however, we will conclude the day's festivitieswith a dance featuring the ever - popular polka and waltz music, to which there will be a general admission charge.

This type of event takes many hours of dedication and hard work on the part of our lodge. I will be calling on you for your assistance in various areas as plans continue to progress.

An Invitation To Lodge. No. 39, Bryan Festival

Dear Friends: You are invited to participate in the Annual Arts and Crafts Czech Festival at the SPJST Lodge No. 39 on Saturday, September 30th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bryan, Texas. It will be held on .the lodge grounds, off Texas Highway 21 West, near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus (the Smetana community). We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successfulthan last year.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The lodge meeting was held on Sunday, August 5th at 2 p.m. with President George Pavelka, Jr. calling the meeting to order.

Flag Bearers James Kortis and Amy Kohutek, substituting for vacationing Gary Skrabanek, brought in the flags and led the pledge to the flag. We remained standing to honor the memory of Sister Louise (Lucy) Marek and Brother Jean Butler by a minute of silence. May they rest in eternal peace and our deepest sympathy to the survivors.

Roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees was read

by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek. She also read the minutes of the July 2nd meeting which were approved as read.

Correspondence included a thank you note from the Brother Arnold C. Dubcak, Sr. family for the wreath of flowers sent to the funeral services, a thank you from Sister Doris Marek for the get well card, the family of Sister Lucy Marek for the floral wreath, and the family of Brother Jean Butler for flowers sent to the funeral.

We welcomed Mervin Dale Balz as a new member of Lodge 47. We hope you will become an active member.

On the sick list, we had these members who we knew of Brothers Leslie Mesecke, Albert Wychopen and Louis Sirney and Sisters Vlasta Motl, Mollie Motl and Lillie Motl Maresh (now deceased). Best wishes for a speedy recovery to those ailing.

Visitors recognized were Gertrude Kahlig, Ann Balusek, Della Marinik and Freddie Schroeder; do make plans to come, again.

The Board of Trustees' minutes were read by Wallace Jez, secretary.

Financial Secretary Adeline Kohutek and Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch gave their monthly reports.

The kitchen, bar and ticket reports were all satisfactory, reported by Parliamentarian Dan Balusek.

FAC Tim Reese reported in all activities, the forthcoming Tarok Tournament at Lodge No. 29 Taylor to be held Saturday, September 16th (watch for reports on this for fall details), the Family Night on August 18th when two teams will be chosen for the Volleyball Tournament November 4th, the serving of hamburgers and French fries from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Fraternal Fest sponsored by the Supreme Lodge emphasizing the Czech Heritage, and that Brother Dan and Sister Norma Mares of our lodge (he is

the son of Brother Henry and Sister Della Mares and she is the daughter of Brother and Sister Tom Popelka, Jr.) recently returned from a month's stay in Czechoslovakia. I wish they would write to the Vestnik about the trip.

The audit report was given by Elmer Skrabanek.

Sister Judy Pechal, assistant youth leader, gave the youth club report in the absence of Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky, who visited the District I YAD in Caldwell, along with her children. Jason Reese presided over the meeting; they had 31 members, 5 visitors and 10 adults attending their meeting. She, also, reported on the District II YAD held July 9th at Lodge 80, Holland. Sixteen Beseda dancers from Lodge 47 (2 circles) were first place winners and will compete on August 27th at Mayborn Convention Center; the scrapbook and poster also won at district level and there were other first place winners who will compete at State. Congratulations, to all who entered, whether in Talent, Craft or Royalty, you were all winners for entering. Best wishes to all of those who will be competing for State honors. A swimming party is planned for August 16th and the forthcoming trip to Six Flags on September 9th; details later. The circles of youth club Beseda dancers will entertain at the Westfest on Sunday, September 3rd at 1 p.m., also watch for the exact time in the Westfest activities' schedule.

A new member was accepted into the lodge at this time. The adult Beseda dancers will also be at the Westfest Sunday performing the longer version of the Beseda at 2 p.m.

A work day was scheduled for Saturday, August 19th; stripping of parking lot and other work was planned with 8 a.m. starting time.

The Rules and Regulations Committee was picked, namely, Woodrow Marek, Henry Janacek, Vallie Zavodny, Louis Kohutek, Lee Hanusch, Judy Pechal and Tom Gibson. They met August 14th for this meeting for drafting any changes to be ready for the September 5th lodge meeting.

Those celebrating birthdays in August are Evelyn and Robert Heese, Frank E. Hejl, Tom Gibson, Jerry Chupik, Henry Janacek, Ruth Hanusch and Vlasta Hruska. Happy birthday to all named who were present at the meeting. My mother celebrated her - 88th birthday Wednesday, also.

Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Jerome and Rose Marie Orsag, Louis and Ruth Kohutek, Raymond and Bennie Mikeska, Raymond and Kathy Pavlica during the month of August. Many, many more!

A barbecue supper will be sold, but the grand march, royalty and dance at night with Charles Mikeska and the "Sensations" playing your favorite numbers will all be FREE. 51, Ellinger To Honor Members Lodge

The SPJST Lodge No. 51 of Ellinger will have a picnic on September 17th at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall. There is no charge to active members. Household members of active members will be charged $2 each; inactive members and guests will be charged $3 each.

Registration begins at approximately 10:30 a.m.; happy hour will be held at 12 noon with a barbecue chicken and sausage meal, with all the accompanying dishes being served at 12:30 p.m.

We invite everyone to come and enjoy this great day of activities. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. consisting of pork roast and gravy, parsley potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans, bread, coffee or tea, and homemade dessert. We hope our sisters will donate toward the dessert and also something for the pastry booth.

Here is the weekend schedule -September 16 -- Our regular dance, Lone Star Czechs play for dancing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. -- some of our booths will be open.

September 17 -- Doors open 11:30 a.m.; dinner served from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; ladies, pastry is needed for this one. The gift shop, games, country store, cake walk, etc. Any donations will be welcome. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., The Sulak Brothers play for dancing; no admission charge for this one. No. 88, Houston News Lodge

I have a revised notice about Mrs. Barbara Sebek who died on July 24, 1989 in Houston. She was a lifelong member of the SPJST and reached the age of 97 years. She was a precious mother to Elsie Roznovsky, Rosie Mrosko and sons, Frank, Jerry, Jr.; 8 and Albert, George grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great - great grandchild. Services were held at the Waltrip Funeral Home Chapel on July 26th. Interment was at the Fairbanks Cemetery. The Sebek family has our sympathy.

We always have happiness with the sad times, such as; we had a beautiful occasion at Lodge 88 on July 29, 1989 from 2 to 4 p.m., when Mrs. Annie Baethe celebrated 100 years of her life.

She was so pretty in her beautiful pink dress, and all of us worried about it being too, too much for her, but she looked so well when it was all over like nothing ever happened. Someone asked her: "Are you tired?" She said in her mild manner; "a little."

Here is a little history of Annie's life. She was born on July 28, 1889 to Katrina and Thomas Repka, the youngest of seven children. She was married on January 10, 1910 to Herman Baethe. They had five children, Thomas Lincoln, who died in infancy, Regina Muesse, who died in 1980, Evelyn Mikolas and J.D. Baethe of Houston and Gladys Craven of Dallas. She has 4 grandchildren and 3 great - grandchildren. They lived on the farm until 1928, then moved to Needville, where they operated a grocery store for 10 years and then moved to Houston in 1938. Mrs. Baethe was active in the lodge, especially in the Birthday Club and loved to help with the kolache bake sales.

Annie and Herman Baethe loved to fish and spent several days each month at their bay home, until his health failed and he couldn't drive that distance anymore. Mr. Baethe died

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, August 22, 1989 May 6, 1978, and is still missed by his family; also the members of our lodge still miss him because he was an active sales representative. Annie is still interested in the lodge news and also watches TV news. Evelyn, her daughter, lives with her and takes good care of her.

Helen and King Hegwood took a 17 - day trip to Alaska and Canada with their friends Noel and Wanda Kennedy. Their first stop was Anchorage, where they took the train trip through Denale Park and on to Fairbanks.

In Fairbanks, King's niece was married on June 24th in a beautiful ceremony. In Helen's conversation, I gathered that she sang for this wedding, which I know added a lot to it.

Then they flew from Fairbanks to Seward and boarded the S.S. Rotterdam for a 7 - day southern cruise to Vancouver, B.C. The foursome then spent 2 days in Victoria, B.C. and then headed home The highlight of the trip was picture perfect weather, which allowed them to view Mt. McKinley in all its splendor. They were told that was so rare, that many people living in Alaska all their lives do not get that kind of a view.

I'm sure this is only a synopsis because a book could be written about this lovely trip without fail.

I will have to plug the Entertainment Committee: They have some good dances coming up -- (The Al Pierson Guy Lombardo Big Band played Saturday, August 19th) and don't forget this new band Dwain Miller Big Band from Nebraska on Friday, August 25 -- a DRESS CODE DANCE; $10 per person.

NOTICE: The Blue Room Party is Friday, September 15, 1989 from 6:30 to 12:00. This party includes cocktails, dinner, dancing with Texas Borderline furnishing the music, all for $12.50 per person. You may pick up your fried chicken dinner at 6:30 until 8:00.

Reservations are available at the lodge office NOW, and will be until August 31st. Margaret Allbritton and Roy Stonaker are in charge of this event.

On December 17th will be the Blue Room Christmas Party. Mark your calendar. Detailed news about this later.

Dear Members and Friends: Isn't it wonderful the type of weather we've had this year? There have been records set in low temperatures. Then, again, it has been heard that the water department didn't get as much money as they do on hot days because, on dry days, we use more water. The rains earlier kept us from having to use very much, then the electric company says, that due to the cool weather, they didn't get enough money so they are thinking about raising the rates. It was nice the good Lord gave us rains and cool weather to help us, but the utility companies want all they can get. I know because all of us know that it takes money to operate a business, but when will it stop?

The property taxes and the school taxes keep going up. Car licenses are up due to the super collider that will be built in Ellis County. I don't know and

also many of you wonder where we are supposed to get all the money, many of us are on fixed income and have to watch to be able to get by. I don't know about the younger generation and how they expect to own a home, because the prices are so expensive. In our country, we don't do without things because they are in the stores and entertainment we all would like to enjoy, but sometimes money prevents us from living like they say, "the Jones." One thing all of us can be thankful for is: our health and the loved ones we have.

The past week, I traveled south and it was beautiful to see the grain fields that looked golden; then further down, the cotton fields are white with cotton ready to be picked. It's nice to have machinery to do the picking. The older generation remembers doing the picking by hand and dragging the sack that cotton was put into and going down the rows. I'm sure most of the mothers and fathers will think about their backs because the modern machinery gathers the cotton. During those days they didn't have air conditioning, but kept cool with more clothing on and not their backs bare and exposed skin as the younger generation does today; then, again, doctors say that the sun does cause skin cancer, so be sure NOT to expose yourself too much now because it will show up later in life.

I'm sure most of you read the editoral part in the Vestnik. There are always interesting articles our editor writes, so be sure to read it because that way you will keep up with all lodges over Texas. There are also lots of good reporters who keep you informed and explain where to go for good Czech entertainment; only if there were more Saturdays and Sundays in the week because it's difficult to be able to go to all the places of interest. There is always plenty of good food and pastries that the Czech ladies bring to different activities that are going on. It's hard to hold down weight with all the delicious foods. It's also good to know that there are fun games being played and being taught to the younger members and friends. It seems as though the game nights, at most lodges, are catching on good and the attendance is getting better all the time.

Brent Ford was chosen to play in the All - Star Baseball Game for the Saginaw, Texas BYA. Brent is the grandson of Sister Elizabeth (Liz) Howard. Good luck to him and the rest of the team.

Our lodge meeting held August 13th was enjoyed and well attended.

Reports were given by the officers so we know how our lodge is progressing.

President Albert Kubala appointed Brother Ed Faraizl to serve as vice president for this meeting only due to Brother John Paprskar having to take care of his wife, Joy, who isn't doing too well yet. Let's hope she does improve soon.

Secretary Christine Zich always keeps very good minutes of the lodge meetings and it's difficult to find an error in her minutes, who has been our secretary for several years.

Treasurer Rose Jaworski certainly knows how to keep records of our monies and how it's spent.

Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek oversees that members pay their lodge dues and how many members we have but sometimes she has to tell us that someone has cashed in their policy but, again, we do have several good sales representatives who keep signing up new members as well as selling annuities; to them, we are thankful.

We need to get our youth club to grow larger and get more youngsters involved so they can take the place of some lodge officers who are getting up in years. We cannot express too much to young people to join SPJST whether it be in Youth Department or the lodge itself. If only people knew what they are missing by not being SPJST members, they would get into the organization. There are many, many things such as life insurance, annuities, best protection for your money, and entertainment that I believe is the best. There is nothing like a good Czech celebration.

After our meetings we have food and drinks. This time it was Evelyn Spacek and Christine Zich with Carl Zich helping serve chicken salad, cold cuts and the popular Mexican salad that is a big hit with all who eat it.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal, so, if you don't attend the meeting, you are really missing out on something good.

Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham sent many birthday cards to members over 65 years of age and several get well and sympathy cards.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to members celebrating birthdays in August, namely, Brothers Rudolph Wruble, Louis Kubala, Albert Kubala and Carl Zich.

Bernadette Halford had an operation for a sinus condition, Bernie Krathy (outpatient) with a heart problem and Joyce Tesar with dental surgery on August 14th, I hope these members are getting better.

Our dear Brother Elmer Howard passed away July 28th. He was our security officer at the lodge for several years and a wonderful police officer for the City of Fort Worth for 35 years. He attended several conventions of the SPJST and could be seen at many district meetings. He really enjoyed being around Czech people.

Our prayers are with his wife, Elizabeth and family.

Members John Motl and Justine Chalouplka lost their brother, Gus Motl of Temple, Texas, who passed away, recently.

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kratky and grandparent is Mrs. Neva (Kratky) Timmis; a baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dearing, grandmother is Mrs. Victoria Murphy; also a baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Pataski and grandparents are Brother and Sister Joe Kozel.

We have a nice couple, namely, Brother J.C. and Millie Waters who will be celebrating 55 years of married life; their daughter, Millie Jo, is here from Germany to help celebate this wonderful occasion.

Brother Joe Botik and Evelyn, his wife, who live in Lubbock, Texas, will be in Fort Worth on September 2, 1989 to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. (Joe is Msgr. Wm. Botik's brother who is a pastor of Christ the King of Dallas and also Carl Zich's cousin.) We are looking forward to being with them on that day. They will be renewing their vows and I suppose that Msgr. Wm. Botik will have the honor to officiate.

I made a small error about the time schedule of our Czech Heritage Day on September 16, 1989, which will start at 12 noon. The hall will be open at 12 noon, so come anytime, because you will be welcome and the day is supposed to have something going on until dance time. Don't forget the Kolach Contest and the Accordion Contest. Be sure to come and try to win some of our prizes, then enjoy the afternoon with the two great bands -- The Texas

Dutchmen from Houston, and Jodie Mikula from Ennis.

The date of the dance is October 14th instead of October 4th. Be sure to check the Vestnik calendar on page 15.

Lodge No. 35, Elk Meeting Our August 13th meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz at 3 p.m.

We had 23 members, 6 youth members and 2 social members present. Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Flag Bearer Jason Pipes.

Minutes of the July meeting were read and approved as read. There was a letter from Bill Peyton's friends thanking us for the use of the hall for their benefit.

Our youth club will be in the Westfest Parade on September 2nd with a pizza party following the parade.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Kathy Pavelka, Richard Burney, Dorothy Banik and Barbara Pavelka.

We wish to welcome new members, William A. Spears, Edward John Pavelka, Richard Scott Brewer, Brian Wesley Brewer, Jason Troy Brewer, Richard L. Lebkowsky, Julie M. Joseph Manuel Lebkowsky, Hernandes, Michael Gilbert Hernandes, Joyce Evelyn Brannen and Christina Marie Anderson.

We were sorry to learn that Mrs. Edna Tepe and Cotton Dieterich have been ill. Here is wishing both of you a speedy recovery. We miss you, Edna, and hope to see you back with us, soon.

Three 50 - year pins were given to Willy Adamek, Nelda Anderson and Mary Norman.

There was some discussion about a picnic being held in October at which time we hope to bring more members back to the lodge.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury After Vincent Hechler, president, called the August 9th meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139 to order, the minutes were read by Lorenda Baldwin, secretary, and Helen Filipp gave the financial report. Lonnie Lostak was out - of - town, so there was no treasurer's report.

Correspondence was read from Superintendent Robert Reeves of Danbury High School thanking the lodge for the Lodge 139 scholarship awarded to Brent Vrazel, and from Supreme • Lodge President Howard Leshikar commending the lodge for recent contributions to the Danbury Little League and to the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department.

It was voted to donate $200 to the Danbury Skrabanek Park at the park's fish fry on August 27th.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned and a social was held.

Dear Members: The July monthly, meeting of Lodge 172 began promptly at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26th with a welcome in Czech by President Alvin Sefcik.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice President Irving Theiss and everyone remained standing in silence in memory of our departed members.

All officers and committee chairpersons were present, except Guide Esther Mikeslca.

Each committee report was well received and all dances have been well attended and the entertainment, bar and kitchen reports showed a very good profit; for example, The Texas Brew dance on Saturday night, July 29th had 537 persons in attendance.

These three groups are all hard working members and give credit to Helen Wallace, Vicki Dressler and Esther Kolwaski as leaders.

Most of the meeting was devoted to planning the Mark Kilroy benefit dance in fighting drug abuse which was held on Sunday, August 6th; give credit to Brother Irving Theiss and Bobbye Johnson who are in charge.

We have entered a protest to the Harris County Appraisal Board on our increase of taxes and on August 8th hope to convince them otherwise.

The lodge wishes to thank Brothers Joe Krenek and Tommy Wallace for their every day maintenance they have been performing plus Brother Raymond Skrabanek for mowing the lawns each Friday morning; these three are saving our lodge a bundle of money.

Speaking of work, we hope to begin the painting of our floor that is concrete on our work day, August 7th.

T:iere are usually several other projects that are taken care of during our work parries which is held on the first Monday of each month. .-=.e come out en those Mondays and enjoy the work and fun.

At last report, Sister Amelia Taft is recovering from her by - pass surgery

Dear Members: This report is given to report the wonderful fraternal event just completed by Lodge No. 172.

The Mark Kilroy Foundation Benefit held at our lodge on August 6th was a very successful effort on the part of our members. With a lot of hard work, approximately $5,500 will be given to the foundation to fight drug abuse. Again, we want to give credit to Sister Bobbye Johnson and Brother Irving Theiss who were chairpersons in charge of this affair.

We do want to thank the four bands, namely: THE TEXAS BREW THE TEXAS ROSE THE TEXAS BORDERLINE THE RIVER ROAD BOYS We also wish to thank the many people who donated their time and money to this wonderful cause.

Our work party days on August 7th and 8th were busy days and much was accomplished.

Remember our next meeting date Wednesday, August 23rd at 7:30 p.m.

This will be our covered dish dinner, prior to our meeting, so please attend with a covered dish meal between 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 191 was held on August 1, 1989.

It was called to order by President M.C. Hughes. Among items discussed was getting a central heat and A/C system. There will have to be some electrical changes and M.C. Hughes will check on the cost and availability.

We also will be having a Craft Fair at the lodge on October 21st. This event will last from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

There will be areas set - up for crafters and food will be served to the public.

SPJST Lodge 191 held its annual anniversary dance on July 29, 1989.

There was a fantastic turnout. Among the many in attendance were some

special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Harms and Marie Absher, the young lady who received the scholarship from our lodge. It, seems as though everyone there had a good time and also, plenty to eat. The ladies of the lodge provided all types of foods which were appreciated by all. Anyone who missed this event will want to be there next year.

Courses Taught At University Of Texas

Czech

The teaching of Czech language classes will continue this fall at The University of Texas at Austin announced Michael Katz, Dean of the Department of Slavic Languages.

Courses offered include first and second year Czech and special conference courses for advanced students.

Czech language courses fulfill the basic language requirement for any university degree program. A major in Czech is also offered. In addition to language courses, conference courses for research into Czech subjects can also be arranged.

Woody Smith, who has taught Czech at UT for several years, will continue heading the Czech program.

Smith says of his classes: "It is rewarding for me to see young Czech Texans who are three or four generations removed from the immigration maintaining an interest in the culture and language of their Czech ancestors."

In addition to the courses offered for credit, the Slavic Department sponsors a Czech Club through which students augment their Czech education in an informal way. The club explores Czech history, folk culture, music, food, and particularly the Czech immigration to Texas. This study occurs in both academic and social settings.

Students engaged in Czech Studies are eligible for scholarships through the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas. They may also apply for a in summer study program Czechoslovakia sponsored by the Czech government.

Classes At Westchester Education Center, Spring BranchHouston Czech

Registration for the 1989 fall semester of classes in the study of the Czech language will begin on Monday, August 21st, hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and continue through Thursday, August 24th. Registration will also be held on Saturday, August 26th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continue Monday, August 28th through Thursday, August 31st on 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. schedule.

Registration and classes will be held at the Westchester Education Center Spring Branch, 901 Yorkchester, Houston, Texas 77079.

The beginners' class, Czech I will meet on Tuesday evenings, starting

September 12th and the advance class, Czech II will meet on Thursday evenings, starting September 14th.

All class hours in these 12 week courses will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each evening. Tuition for each course is $50 plus $5 registration fee for Spring Branch residents.

Registration fee for out - of - district registrants is $15.

Let us celebrate Alief's 20th continuous semester of the Czech language by attending the commemorative Czech course which starts on Thursday, September 7, 1989.

This conversational Czech course will be taught, as usual, under the auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) in the Alief Community Evening School located in Hastings High School between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north, at the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the southwest of Houston.

The first lesson of this course, designed to develop basic skill in the conversational Czech, wherever it is spoken, will be on Thursday, September 7th and henceforth for 12 weeks, always on Thursdays, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This class will be divided into 2 or more groups according to the knowledge of Czech of the signed - up students. Tuition, set by the school, will be $40 and the instructor will be John J. Karas of Houston, again.

Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume III

Czech

Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume III, is now available. This book identifies over 7,400 Czech immigrants who arrived in Galveston during 1907 - 1914. This data, which was abstracted from National Archives microfilm sources, also lists the home village in Czechoslovakia for a majority of these immigrants as well as their stated destinations throughout the United States.

This volume includes pictures and data on immigrant ships as well as a comtemporary article on the life of Czech immigrants.

Choral Club Meets

Dear Members: On Tuesday, July 25th, nine members and two visitors met to sing some of our favorite songs. Those present were Emily Stuteville, Helen Janacek, Vallie Zavodny, Dorothy Pechal, Albina Mikeska, Georgia Sodek, Mary Holick, Della Psencik, Lillian Mikulec and her two granddaughters, Alena and Adriene Ehler. We missed the accordionist, Henry Janacek, who was busy painting the house and Martha Klusacek who was vacationing in Florida.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Vallie Zavodny and Mary Holick.

Our next meeting was set for Tuesday, August 22nd.

88 Houston Birthday Club News Lodge

On August 9, 1989 the Birthday Club met in the dining room at Lodge 88 for their regular monthly meeting.

President Kathy Trefell opened the meeting at 11:15 a.m. with a request by Louis Hanus to speak a few words: Louis started with "Peace Be With You." He thanked all who did so much for Mrs. Baethe's celebration. A lot of time was spent by many. Rosalee Kostom, Lillie Spies and Lowrina Lindemann helped Louis and were thanked by Evelyn Baethe Mikolas; also thanked the Birthday Club members who made extra sandwiches beside the food the caterer provided.

We all love you, Mrs. Annie' President Trefell then called the roll and had a large crowd present.

Comment: I think when we have to miss a week such as we did for storm Chantal, we really miss our fellowship, and make a special effort not to miss another one.

I had such a sweet letter from Frances Dvorak, who now lives in Norman, Oklahoma. Mr. Frank is in the nursing facilities of a hospital, and since their son, Henry, and wife, Polly, live there, it makes it more convenient for all of them. Frances can spend the day with Frank and then spend the night with Henry. I'm sure it's closer for their daughter, Elsie Kadera, who lives in McKinney.

Frances was a devout Birthday Club member and we do miss you. Don't forget these nice people. Their address is: 1010 Thistlewood Dr., Norman, OK 73072.

Also one of our beloved ladies, Virginia Hale, and a regular participant in our club has been missed very much; she had surgery and was very ill, however, she's at home now and will be back with us, soon.

Mary Kosut is ill again and was missed very much, but hope she'll be well soon.

We were so glad to see Frances Olexa, again. She keeps going which is good.

Anna Hoffman attended and is doing much better now.

It was announced that Ellen Miculka is in charge of craft classes, starting Friday, August 11, 1989. If you are interested, come and sign in.

Cooks for September are Bessie Lero (for Anna Hoffman), Clara Jecmenek, Willie Mae Stang and Mary Ehret.

Martha Baxter won President Kathy's gift and Bessie Lero and Gladys Pulley won the Calcutta game.

Those who had birthdays were Mary Ehret, Delores Condon, Georgia Buchanan, Edna Froehlich and Josephine Pumilia. "Happy Birthday" was sung after which President Kathy gave Grace and we adjourned at 12 noon to a delicious covered dish luncheon.

Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by our President Jo Prochaska. She led the 27 members and guest, Jewel Clark, in the pledge to our flag.

Secretary Merel Kovar read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

In the absence of our Treasurer Lydia Alholm, Mary Pavey read her report and it was approved as read.

Merel Kovar read a very nice thank you from Mary Perricone, on the loss of her granddaughter.

Sunshine Chairperson Anna Johnson reported on the sympathy and get well cards sent. They are always appreciated.

Elma Anderson thanked everyone for the donations of cakes for the bake sale and cash donations. The money was given to the Hospice in the name of her daughter, Janet Steelman.

Everyone was so, happy to hear the over $2,000 quota was reached and she will get the Computer Puff. The Hospice is great in helping the needy.

Help them when you can.

Rosemary Gribble and her daughter, Rosemary Riney just returned from a wonderful week in California.

Final plans were made for the trip to Dallas.

It was voted we would have a cold lunch in September.

We learned today our Thanksgiving dinner, which we have in the evening for members, will be a week later on November 8th. More details later but mark the date.

Happy Birthday went to Mary Perricone, Bunny Tesar, Geneva Hennessey, Harold Green, Martha Boenisch and Mary Hale. Hope you all have many more.

After the blessing everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch. Everyone really outdid themselves and games were played.

TO ALL CONCERNED: We are looking forward to and planning for the two biggest and most successful State Royalty and Youth Achievement Days.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over.

We are asking that everyone cooperate because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for both Royalty and YAD follows this report along with directions to Lodge 47 Seaton and the Frank Mayborn Convention Center.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register.

There will be someone present to assist you in setting up your craft.

Contestants in talent must be sure to bring their own props including their tapes, cassettes and the equipment on which to play these. This is very important because we will not be able to play these or furnish the necessary equipment. Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges or district. Be sure to get your scrapbooks to your DYC so they can get them to the YAD during registration time.

A reminder that winners in the craft age group (15 - 17) will have their winning craft placed in the SPJST Museum for one year. Also, first place scrapbook of each DISTRICT and first place at STATE will be taken to TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS for judging.

REMEMBER -- If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that the second place winner can represent your district.

This year State Royalty and YAD will hold some wonderful talent and

craft and we hope that you all will plan to be in attendance.

New Braunfels Hosts District VII YAD The Bavarian Village in New Braunfels was the scene of District VII Youth Achievement Day, hosted by Lodge No. 185. Everyone had a great time viewing the crafts and watching the talent show. The district youth members were invited to go to Schlitterbahn after the show. What a day!

The talent show was few in numbers but great in talent. Everyone enjoyed the show. The judges had their work cut out for them. Everyone was outstanding.

The craft entries showed that the youth had put in many hours of work on their projects. This area really gave the judges a challenge. Keep up the good work. I know we will see some state winners this year.

I am issuing a challenge to the youth for next year. I want to see a talent number in every age group from every youth club; set your goals now and we can accomplish this, there will be a special award if we meet this goal.

On behalf of the district youth, I would like to express my appreciation to the adults who worked to put on this day and to Lodge 185 for being a great host for the day. A special thanks goes out to the judges and the tabulation crew. This was a job well done.

Dear Readers, The youth meeting was held August 4th with a fair attendance.

Cakes were brought by the youth to West Rest Haven's Birthday Party.

Our annual lodge picnic was held July 16th and the youth club sponsored a cake walk, also had games, auction, fish pond and snow cones. They did real well on their activities. I want to thank everyone who brought cakes for their cake walk, items for games, who worked with the youth in various places and those who helped cleaned up. Also our thanks to Bobby Dobecka for letting us use his speakers.

Kevin Dobecka, Keith Hykel and Tammi Dobecka went to Camp Val Verde and they had a good time, also made some nice craft items.

A Birtday Party and games were held on July 28th by the youth members.

We started making sausage kolache and strudels on Mondays and Fridays for Westfest, which will be held September 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the Westfest Grounds, one mile south of the city. All of you come by and see us.

We will also have a float in the Westfest Parade.

The youth club held a swimming party at the West Swimming Pool on August 8th. They served sandwiches and drinks afterwards. The fifteen members had a good time.

State YAD will be August 27th at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.

Robstown Lodge 117 Held Youth Activities Dear Readers, Not much happened in June because I was out - of - state for 16 days. I made a trip to Stowe, Ohio to attend the graduation of my granddaughter Catherine E. Kline, member of Lodge No. 117 Robstown.

The youth club held its meeting on June 24th, and had a movie trip on June 2nd.

The month of July was more active.

A movie trip to Sunrise Mall (movies cost $1) anytime, therefore, our club members go often. July 2nd, we toured the Oriental Museum. July 4th we went to the Parade and Fireworks.

July 16th, District VII YAD was held at New Braunfels and 9 youth clubbers participated.

Country Store At Snook Lodge 9 The Snook SPJST Youth Club will sponsor their annual country store Sunday, August 27, 1989 at the Snook SPJST Hall, starting at 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Items that will be on hand will be canned homemade pickles, jellies, crafts, candies, homemade noodles, greenery, aprons, macreme and many other items.

This is in conjunction with the Snook Volunteer Fire Department's annual barbecue. The public is invited.

Dear Members, There were nine members who attended youth camp. I feel that each one had a great time inspite of the heat. Thanks to all who made it possible for our youth members who went to camp.

We hope Robin Zucha is doing better with her broken ankle due to going to camp as a chaperone.

We had eight members to attend a pizza party on August 2nd. We also passed out flyers for the M.A.R.K. Foundation.

I would like to say it was an honor to go to District I YAD in Caldwell on Sunday, August 6th.

It was my pleasure to place the king's robe on District I King Brian Faust. Congratulations!

I thought everyone did a fine job out of all the entries entered. The judges had a job cut out for them to place only first, second and third awards in each category.

District I Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek really did a great job putting her District I YAD together.

I was unable to go to Seaton Lodge 47 youth meeting because it was on the same day. I was told we had 31 members present, with 5 visitors and 10 adults. Our assistant youth leader, led the group at the meeting because our Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky

Dear Brothers and Sisters, From July 29 through August 1, 1989, District V youth attended camp at Camp Val Verde in McGregor, Texas with youth from District VII. For District V, it started on Saturday, July 29 at 10 a.m. when we boarded the bus and headed for camp.

Everyone was excited to spend four days at camp and to be able to meet new people and make new friends.

Once we arrived at Camp Val Verde, we unloaded the bus and found our cabins. It was great to see SYD Claudette Reese and District VII Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska, again. The LITs also enjoyed seeing the LITs we met at LIT Retreat, which was held in June. LITs from District V were Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Tommie Wallace, Angie Clayton, Michelle Linney (all of Lodge 88, Houston), James Pruitt (Lodge 172, Pasadena), and Keith Kieschnick (Lodge 142, Houston).

While the leaders and LITs prepared for the campfire and for the rest of camp, the teens and juniors went swimming. For the campfire, we all went down to the river. After the ceremony, we held initiation for new campers. Everyone used washable markers to initiate first - time campers by writing and drawing on their faces, arms, legs and backs. It was funny to see the expressions on these campers' faces once they saw what they looked like. Then, we held a cute skit which gave youth, LITs and adults a chance to get involved. When we got back, LITs and adults took the juniors on a hike while the teens enjoyed another swim. Then, the teens went on a scavenger hunt, where they had to go from place to place in order to answer clues to get a piece of a scrambled message. Juniors went to bed at 10:30 p.m., while teens stayed up until 12:30 a.m.

The next day started with 7:30 a.m. wake up, and flag ceremony at 7:50 a.m. LIT Crystal Wallace was in charge of preparing for flag ceremonies. Before breakfast at 8 a.m., LITs Tommie Wallace and Marlene Migl led groups in singing grace. At 8:25 a.m., LITs led campers sing songs like "My Bonnie," " Singing in the Rain," and "Little Bunny Foo - Foo." Then it was time for the activities. Groups were divided by age groups, and were led by adults and LITs. LITs from District V leading groups were Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl, Tommie Wallace and Marlene Migl. Each session lasted one hour, with a 10 - minute break in between. Sessions included archery, swimming lessons, canoes, horse riding, craft and dancing in craft, we painted T - shirts or pillow cases and, at dancing, we learned the Beseda, Popcorn, Amos Moses and more. At 12:20 p.m. we ate lunch, and rest time lasted until 2:20 p.m. At 1:45 p.m., LITs got together to make plans for that night's party. Before dinner, we had flag ceremony. LITs wore their clothes backwards to dinner to show that night's party theme. From 6:30 to

7:30 p.m., we prepared for the party.

"Backwards Night" began at 7:45 p.m. We started with a few contests, and later had a dance.

Monday was the same as Sunday.

Groups met and participated in their sessions. For craft, we painted and made kites. At dinner, LITs wore country outfits to display that night's party theme. At 7:45 p.m., "Country Hoedown" began. We played games like "Fire in the Mountain," "People to - People," and "Farmer in the Dell." There was even a bubble blowing contest. Teens and Juniors danced for a while and then teens went on a hike around the woods.

Afterwards, LITs went swimming and played volleyball. Everyone got to go to bed later than usual because it was the last night.

Tuesday was the last day. After breakfast, everyone packed up and got ready to go. We held a balloon release ceremony and everyone had to go to the center of the circle and say their name, their lodge, and one thing they like most about camp. I said I liked camping with District VII, because I made a lot of friends I hope to keep for a long time. All together, we released our balloons. Then we had awards.

Maxine Pavliska awarded certificates to best campers, leaders, LITs, teen aids, and special people. District V LITs Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl, and Marlene Migl presented a special whistle to SYD Claudette Reese from District V to thank her for making camp so great. Then, we all hugged each other bye and went home.

This year's camp was the best. There are a lot of people who are responsible for this great time, and these include: SYD Claudette Reese, DYC Marie Stayton, DYC Maxine Pavliska, the chaperones, leaders, LITs and, of course, the youth. Thanks to everyone.

I had a great time, and even though this is my last year as an LIT, I intend to return next year as a chaperone with fellow last year LITs Darlene Migl and Crystal Wallace. Camp is always great, and that's why I want to come back. I think this year's camp was the best I've ever attended. I'd like to say "hello" to all of my new friends I made this year at camp from District VII. It was great camping with you all, and I hope we can do it again next year. Lodge 47 Youth Meeting

The August 6 meeting was called to order by President Jason Reese.

There were 31 members present. We also had 10 adults and 5 visitors.

Our youth leader, Patsy Koslovsky, went to District I YAD in Caldwell, so our Assistant Youth Leader Judy Pechal was with us. She did a great job.

We talked about having a Swimming Party this month, about District II trip to Six Flags in September, and about practicing Beseda each Thursday night before State YAD. We also talked about our District II YAD and what all we won.

Birthdays for August are Tonya Holt, David Kortis, Joshua Smith and Victoria Smith. Door prizes were won

by Michelle Reese and Sammy Crawford.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi Youth Meeting Dear Readers, It has been a while since anyone from the Lodge 79 Youth Club has written to the Vestnik, so I'll do my best in letting everyone know what has been happening in our lodge.

Our June 28, 1989 meeting was held at the Majek residence. It was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Charles Majek.

In attendance were nine youth club members, six adult members and two guests; our two guests were District VII Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska, and State Youth Director Claudette Reese. We would like to give our thanks and appreciation to our visitors for taking their time to visit us at the June meeting. We enjoyed your presence and we hope that you join us, again.

At this meeting, we elected officers, discussed upcoming events and possible fund - raisers. Our new officers are: President - Tammy Rambo, Vice President - Trey Rambo, Secretary and Treasurer - Cheryl Majek, Historian and Reporter Charles Majek, Sergeant - at - Arms • Tiffany Rambo.

The July 16, 1989 meeting of Lodge 79 was held at Lodge 79 and Sokol Hall. There were six youth members and two adult members present.

The newly - elected officers were installed before the adult lodge meeting. We discussed camp and completed our Vestnik Project for the month. The meeting was then adjourned followed by an ice cream social.

July 29th through August 1st, our youth club went to camp. This year camp was held at Camp Val Verde in McGregor, Texas. We arrived late to camp due to car problems, however, all of us were still able to get situated for the next three days ahead of us.

This year, District VII and V camped together. It gave us a chance to meet new friends and to visit with old friends. At camp we did things such as horseback riding, swimming, canoe, archery and crafts. Although the days of camp passed by so quickly, we really enjoyed going to camp.

Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Club • Dear Readers, The August 13, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by Vice President Christy Marek. Our President Steve Bruggman was unable to attend this meeting.

Bradley Marek and Rodney Posvar led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the members and adults remained standing for a moment of silence.

The roll was called by Secretary Kristie Waits. Fourteen members and three adults were present. The secretary then read the minutes and the members approved them as read.

Treasurer Carl Macek gave his report. The balance was $649.26.

Membership dues are $1. If you have not yet paid, please give your money to the treasurer at the next meeting.

Youth Leader Rose Harvell informed us about the State YAD coming up on Sunday, August 27th, at Mayborn Convention Center in

Temple. The registration will begin at 9 a.m. The day's events are scheduled to conclude by 4 p.m. The State Royalty competition will be Saturday, August 26th at Seaton Lodge No. 47.

It will begin at 4 p.m. and there will be an evening meal and a free dance with music by Charles Mikeska and his "Sensations."

The District II Six Flags trip will be Saturday, September 9th. The bus will leave the Temple Mall parking lot at 7:30 a.m. and arrive at Six Flags in Arlington at approximately 10 a.m.

The bus will leave Six Flags at 10 p.m. and return back to the parking lot of the Temple Mall around 12:30 a.m.

Please let Youth Leader Rose Harvell know, as soon as possible, if you are going on this trip and also, if you will be taking a guest.

Our August social will be going to eat pizza after the State YAD on August 27th. We will leave the Mayborn Center after the YAD and return home so everyone can make those last minute preparations for the first day of school the next day -August 28!! This will be an exciting and a very delicious way to end the summer of 1989. Thanks to Seaton Lodge 47 Youth Club, our neighbor lodge, for inviting us to the Walker Swimming Pool in Temple for a swimming social Wednesday, August 16th.

The youth meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m. Our mother lodge invited us to listen to an interesting presentation by guest speaker Dr. Delbert Foster, who is a dermatologist at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. His overwhelming slide show and speech on skin cancer, its causes and effects, hopefully will make everyone think twice before spending time in the sun.

The doctor said that skin cancer is preventable and curable. It's the most prevalent of all cancers, and it is estimated that approximately 500,000 Americans develop skin cancer every year. The best defense against skin cancer is simply, sun avoidance. The surest way to a cure, like most other cancers, is early dedection.

A member of the mother lodge audience mentioned an arousing fact.

No one knew about the dangers of skin cancer when she was growing up but, today, we are more advanced and can prevent the harmful effects the sun WILL cause.

Thanks to Dr. Foster for presenting this important information and also thank you to the mother lodge for letting us in on this program.

88 Houston Youth Club Meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On August 9, 1989, Houston Lodge 88 Youth Club held their monthly meeting which was called to order at 7:35 p.m. The meeting was presided over by Darlene Migl and Angela Clayton led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence for the good of our members. Then we recited the SPJST Pledge and sang the SPJST song.

Secretary Marlene Migl called the roll of officers. Present were President Darlene Migl, Vice President Michelle Linney, Secretary Marlene Migl and Treasurer Angela Clayton. The register followed. Fourteen members were present (this included the officers) and six adults. Then, the minutes were read. Because the secretary was not present at the previous meeting (due to a family trip to Las Vegas), the June and July meeting notes were read. There were no corrections or additions and we had no correspondence.

Treasurer Angela Clayton announced we had made $320.15 during July, from weekly bake sales and aluminum can recycling.

Then, it was time for the committee reports from our chairpersons. Cindy Groendes, representing Social Committee, said that our next social

was to be on August 19th at Malibu Golf. Youth members were to meet there at 10:30 a.m. Everyone was excited, because a game of golf at Malibu with our youth club friends is always a good time!

Scrapbook Committee Chairperson Crystal Wallace announced the names of members who had volunteered so far to help work on the scrapbook; additional members volunteered.

President Darlene then went through the names of the other committees while youth signed up to work on them. If you did not attend this meeting and know of a committee you would enjoy participating in; come to the September meeting and sign up!

The president then asked Youth Leader Barbara Linney to make her report. She announced there is to be an Ornament Contest this year at Family Day. A guideline and rule sheet was distributed. The contest is to be judged on September 17th at Lodge 88, and you must be present to win. Contact Mrs. Linney if you need a rule sheet. I hope everyone tries their best at this competition and good luck on your ornaments. Next, Mrs. Linney remarked that Lodge 88 hosted a very successful Youth Achievement Day on July 23rd. She also reminded youth about State Royalty August 26th in Seaton and State YAD August 27th in Temple. She discussed our Gold C Coupon Book fund - raising project.

We took orders at Splash Day, but not as many as we expected to. The books ($9 each) come in during the first week of September, so we exchanged ideas on how we could increase sales. Some suggested that we have a booth at Family Day. DYC Marie Stayton then gave her report. She said District V's YAD was a success and she thanked everyone who participated and worked so hard to make the day so great. Lodge 88 had a lot of first place winners, and we all look forward to State competition.

Then, she commented on how well camp went along. We all agreed on how we really enjoyed camping with District VII. Everyone wants to go camping with them next summer, again. Mrs. Stayton, next, discussed Family Day to be held at Lodge 88; it looks to be a busy day. There will be a youth Ornament Contest, and we will sponsor a booth which will be a lot like our last year's one. We plan to display our banners, camp T - shirts, crafts and recent scrapbooks to show adult members our activities. We will also perform a short program. All youth from District V are encouraged to attend. We will be having a District V Youth Club meeting to discuss upcoming plans. Mrs. Stayton then announced that she wants to have another big district social, like the one we had this past summer to San Antonio. The two suggestions to choose from are Disneyworld in Florida or Six Flags in Texas. Lodge 88 Youth Club members should decide which they prefer, and we will vote at our next meeting. State YAD was briefly discussed. Look for more details in the Vestnik.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to members Darren Havemann, Shannon McGee, Jennifer Welfl and DYC Marie Stayton. Happy Birthday!

Snook SPJST Lodge No. 9 have speaker. David Kovar presented a program on "Bows and Arrows." It was a very interesting and informative program. He also told us about the safety of using bows and arrows, while hunting and caring for the equipment.

He explained the different types of arrows and what they are used for.

66 Waco Youth Take Summer Trip Lodge

Dear Members, On August 5th and 6th, Lodge 66 went to Six Flags and Wet n' Wild. I had a fun - time even though it was a bit hot. We also stayed in Motel 6 on Saturday night.

Dear Members, Lodge 39 went to District I YAD on Sunday, August 6, 1989. We got first place on very Individual Talent in all age groups including first in Senior Group Talent "The Right Stuff" and second place in "Charlton House."

The SPJST Lodge No. 40 El Campo - Hillje Youth Club met on August 3, 1989 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

Our meeting was called to order by President Kim Kacal. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Youth Club Pledge were led by Sharon Borak.

Secretary Martha Bartos read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Danny Borak called the roll and collected dues.

Under old business, reports were given on a social held on July 25th.

The social was originally planned to be a swimming party but, due to the weather, the plans had to be changed.

Under new business there was much to be discussed. Members filled out camp evaluation sheets. Plans were made for the District VI YAD on August 13th. State Royalty will be held on August 26th in Seaton and State YAD will be held on August 27th in Temple. The District VI meeting will be held on October 29th.

Two guest speakers attended the meeting. They were Mrs. Regina Kasper and Mrs. Delores Valigura.

They are members of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. The ladies gave a program on the flag. They shared the proper manner in which to show respect to the flag and many other interesting things about the flag with us.

Door prizes were given and the members worked on puzzles. After the meeting, members played games and enjoyed refreshments served by Mrs. Charlene Borak.

The next meeting will be held on September 7th in the Gold Room at 7 p.m.

Lodge Dear Readers, The August 9, 1989 youth meeting was brought to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Kimberly McNeill.

Scott Gailey gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $812.37.

Fund - raising plan for this month is a car wash activity at the high school on August 19th.

New member Troy Hess was welcomed to the club.

Eric Tomastik was elected to serve as parliamentarian.

Youth Leader Lori Messer reported the information on the car wash and about having a dance.

The next meeting will be on September 13th at 6:30 p.m.

Youth members enjoyed having cokes and candy for refreshments, which were served by the lodge while we worked on crafts following adjournment.

Horror stories about youngsters who accidentally shoot themselves or others abound. After three were killed in Florida in June alone, the state mandated jail terms for people whose loaded guns injure children.
