After the Supreme Lodge meeting in July, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar notified your editor that District III Director - Chairman of the Board Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik was entering the hospital July 18th in Dallas for by - pass surgery. Since that time, our information is that Brother Pokladnik had a five - by - pass operation, he says he is feeling fine at home and plans to be active again, soon. He appreciated the cards, calls, etc. and we all wish him the best in the future. *** Someone always pays for life insurance whether it is bought or not.

You pay the price through periodic premiums -- or your widow and children will pay the price through sacrifices forced on them...or you will reach retirement age without a fund to convert to retirement income. Your family pays through the home they are forced to leave. Your widow pays through the job she doesn't want, but cannot afford to lose. Your children pay through the loss of their mother's loving care and guidance. They also pay through the higher education they are denied. Your family pays through the sense of well - being which is no longer theirs. If you don't pay your price...they must pay theirs, and both you and your spouse will pay the price in retirement years of deep concern rather than care - free enjoyment. *** You do not need an exceptionally large income to embark on a program of life insurance or to start an Annuity Plan which will help make your retirement years care - free years. The chief consideration is that whichever path you choose to follow is entered upon soon enough. Social Security deductions are mandatory for most people. They will provide an excellent base on which to build a retirement program. Company benefits also help...but a change in employment can cancel out what might have been a good program. The benefits provided by life insurance can make the difference because they are guaranteed. We wish to further emphasize it is not how much you have, but how long it will last. *** What assets will you have when you reach the age of which you want to retire? Today people are living longer than at any time in the past. Women live even longer. This means that unless we snap to and do some thinking, and acting, a higher percentage of us will be left with little or no liquid assets upon retirement, dependent only upon Social Security and whatever pension plan our present employer provides. The dependable asset, and the one most easily acquired is life insurance. *** REME1C,213E13,

One of the things that this editor will always remember about President General Dwight Eisenhower is a statement he once made. He said that he once asked one of his superiors what it takes to make a good staff officer since the job is a rather trying one, and the answer was "Disarm anything that tends to irritate, hurt or insult you with a ready grin and it will not hurt nearly as much." I feel that he practiced that a large amount of the time. A story that was told to me a number of times in Germany was that mast of the time he was commanding general in the European Theater and came upon a soldier on duty or working or a soldier in a fox hole, he would put his right hand in his pocket so that the soldier would not have to salute. I also remember House Speaker John McCormack saying, "What impressed me most was that he was always Dwight D. Eisenhower, the man who was in love with all his fellow mankind."

Environmentalists from 124 nations who assembled in London recently agreed that chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), the gas contained in refrigerants and solvents that is destroying the earth's protective ozone, should be phased out by 1997.

Meanwhile, individuals can slow the damage. Leakage from some 90 million car air conditioners is the single largest source of CFC in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Car air conditioners and home units, which also use CFCs, should be checked yearly for leaks before warm weather arrives. Many car owners whose vehicles have lost their cool since last summer simply buy a can of CFC based refrigerant such as Freon or Genetron, sold at various stores, and shoot it into their air conditioners.

They should reconsider. While servicing an air conditioner at a service station will cost $25 to $55, a professional will lose less of the gas into the atmosphere than the do - it yourselfer will. A pro also can fix electrical malfunctions or tiny leaks that may be causing the cooling problem. Service stations will soon do even better. They are beginning to install equipment that traps CFCs during servicing. The. EPA wants to mandate this equipment by 1992. *** Come August, booze and boats will become an even riskier mix than they are now. That is when the Coast Guard will kick off a new program to enforce laws against driving boats while intoxicated. In effect as of January, 1988, the law for the first time establishes 0.10 percent blood - alcohol content as the legal point of intoxication for recreational boaters.

Once training is complete next month, Coast Guard personnel will begin giving on - the - spot breath analyses and coordination tests to boaters suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Possible trouble signs that could cause boaters to be pulled over include moving too close to other boats and causing a wake in a no - wake area.

The program will begin in 12 states along the Gulf Coast and in the mid Atlantic region, including Texas, Maryland and Florida. Intoxicated boaters who did not injure anyone or damage property will face civil charges and a maximum fine of $1,000. More serious offenses could produce criminal charges involving a fine of up to $5,000 and a year in jail. ***

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Family Day Dear Members: Our lodge will hold its Annual Family Day on Sunday, August 20th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. A catered fried chicken dinner with trimmings will be served at noon, as usual, with $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for youth (6 to 12 years).

The ladies of our lodge are asked to bring a dessert to be served with the meal.

A short program will be held following the meal. Our 50 - year members will receive their pins.

District VI Director Matt Vanek and District VI President Katherine Wokaty are planning to be with us. We also hope to have an officer from the Supreme Lodge.

Before the meal and following the program, our lodge will sponsor a Bacon Wheel with all proceeds going towards the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas; anyone wishing may donate a $2 item to this worthy project.

The youth club will have a drawing and several door prizes will be given.

Members and their families are invited to attend and enjoy the day.

Everyone seems to be having a very busy summer - hectic, but fun.

Our last meeting was held July 12th.

President John Motal called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members.

Our sympathy to the family and friends of Marcus Bravenec and Amos Hosek who recently passed away. Mr. Hosek was a Lodge 32 member and Mr. Bravenec was a member of the Placedo lodge. We will miss both of them.

The youth club from Victoria had a good time at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. Now, they are getting ready for District VI YAD on August 13th.

Shara McCormick is a recipient of Miss Scholarship.

Dear Fellow Lodge Members: Plans for our second Annual SPJST Arts and Crafts Czech Festival are now underway. The event has been scheduled for Saturday, September 30th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the lodge grounds. We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successful than last year. A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts (with vendors from throughout the state), live music, a Czech museum, kolache, a variety of food booths, children's activities, and much more.

There is no admission charge to the festival, however, we will conclude the day's festivities with a dance featuring the ever - popular polka and waltz music, to which there will be a general admission charge.

This type of event takes many hours of dedication and hard work on the part of our lodge. I will be calling on you for your assistance in various areas as plans continue to progress.

Therefore, I thought you may like to mark the date of the festival on your calendars. Although, it may seem early, time seems to pass all too quickly. If I fail to contact you and you are willing to work at the festival, please notify me. I may be reached at (409) 696 - 6156.

Dear Friends: You are invited to participate in the Annual Arts and Crafts Czech Festival at the SPJST Lodge No. 39 on Saturday, September 30th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bryan, Texas. It will be held on the lodge grounds, off Texas Highway 21 West, near the Texas A&M Riverside Campus (the Smetana community). We are hoping that this year's festival will be even more successful than last year.

A variety of entertainment is being planned. The festival will include a full day of activities featuring arts and crafts, live music and dancers, a Czech museum, kolache, children's activities, and much more.

Booth assignments will be made on a first come, first, served basis, upon receipt of application and fee. The application should be completed and returned no later than September 17th.

84 Dallas To Honor Members Lodge

Dear Members: It's our dinner honoring our 70 or over members on August 13th beginning at 4 p.m. Make your reservations quickly. No pastry to be brought for this occasion.

Remember the Czechfest on September 10th -- doors open at 11:30 a.m., dinner (roast with all the trimmings, coffee and dessert for $5.50 - adult and $3 - children – 12 years and under) will be served from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Ladies, pastry is needed for this dinner. Donations are being accepted for any of the booths (gift booth, groceries for country store, cake walk, etc.) There will be a FREE dance from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with music by The Sulak Brothers -not The Mynarcik Band (sorry about that mistake).

The Mynarcik Band plays for our Halloween Dance on October 29th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; come in costume, it's $1 per person. You all come!

Most of our dances are well attended. On July 15, 1989 Henry Kite and wife, Adella, were in charge of the Vrazel's dance, and they were assisted at the door by Tim and Rosalee Kostom and Karl and Lowrina Lindemann. They had a big crowd and all seemed to have a wonderful time.

Vlastimil Kovanda is the director and has a very good orchestra. They asked us to come to Caldwell and enjoy the day with them.

We were indeed saddened by Mrs. Barbara Sebek's death on July 24, 1989 at the age of 97 years of age. She is survived by daughters Rosie Mrosko, and Elsie Roznovsky, and sons Frank, Jerry, George and Albert, Jr. Funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26th in the Waltrip Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Alden Knoblock officiating.

Interment was at the Fairbanks Cemetery. Comment: Mrs. Sebek was a member of Lodge No. 142 SPJST. She was the mother of a fine family.

We sympathize with the family.

On October 29, 1989 is our Czech Day at Lodge 88, which is some time off; although, if you don't want to miss this special affair you'd better mark your calendar, NOW. This day will be different from previous Czech Days, because we always served turkey and dressing, but this time it will be a Czech dinner, consisting of beef and pork roast, knedliky (dumplings), sladke zeli (sweet - sour) cabbage or kraut, plenty of gravy and homemade rolls. Doesn't that sound good? Also we will have sausage for a back - up.

Sausage sandwiches are so good after dancing a while. The price of the Czech dinner is $4 and $2.50 for children. The Birthday Club will also furnish delicious pastry, which we are famous for. If you need some information about the pastry call Lillie Spies at 695 - 5243; you might want to help her with this project.

I have to touch on a few things that I've been told about: Our famous Men's Club, which does so much for our lodge, will have a drawing but I don't know the particulars, yet.

DYC Marie Stayton stated that the youth will have an activity in the lobby, and the youth will clean the tables.

Dear Members and Friends: Summertime has finally arrived.

We extend our get well wishes and prayers for our District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik, who had surgery; and our sincere sympathy to Sister Liz Howard and family of Lodge No. 92 on the loss of her husband. Brother Elmer had been a longtime friend. May he rest in peace.

Sisters Billie Jo Mason and Lisa Hopkins just returned from a week in San Francisco, on business and pleasure.

Brother C.L. and Sister Patti Gage just returned from a wonderful time in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sister Sheri Mason arrived safely to New Zealand and loves the country.

I just received the news that my brother in St. Louis is back in the hospital, hope he will recognize me Friday.

The bug has really been hitting a lot of our members. Get well, soon!

Our next meeting will be Sunday, August 13th at 3 p.m.

The youth club is planning a Grandmother's Appreciation Day at the September 10th meeting at 1 p.m.

The July meeting of Lodge 177 Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Bill Hutka. The pledge was recited.

Minutes from our last meeting were read by Secretary Sharon Hutka and approved as read.

There were 24 members present.

A thank you letter was presented from the Cedar Ridge Campfire Association and a thank you card from Sharon Hutka for the pot plant sent to her while she was in the hospital. It was good to have Sharon back because we had missed you on Tuesday game night.

One new member, Harry Giddens, was accpeted in to the lodge.

All chairpersons' reports were good and the trustees' reported that the dance floor to be repaired and the board discussed the asphalt on the parking lot.

Members gave the youth club a hand for their participation in the District YAD and Helen Bland made a motion to reimburse the parents $100 for the royalty entrants.

The Rules and Regulations Committee presented a change in the R&Rs. A vote was called and the rule change to allow patrons to wear long shorts to the dances was approved; 11 to 8.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.

Members and guests of our lodge gathered at the Preiss Heights Park on the Guadalupe for our annual picnic on July 10th, at 6 p.m.

President Dwight Doeppenschmidt and Vice President Roy Haag roasted wieners and kept the barbecue ribs hot while the youth enjoyed swimming.

After an hour or so of swimming and fellowship, everyone was ready for the sumptuous meal.

We were happy to have our District VII Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska join us as well as our other guests.

No business was transacted since this was a social gathering.

Members of this lodge are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. James McDonald for allowing us the use of these facilities for our picnic.

Our next meeting is scheduled for October 19, 1989 at the Bavarian Village, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Classes At Westchester Education Center, Spring BranchHouston Czech

Registration for the 1989 fall semester of classes in the study of the Czech language will begin on Monday, August 21st, hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and continue through Thursday, August 24th. Registration will also be held on Saturday, August 26th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continue Monday, August 28th through Thursday, August 31st on 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. schedule.

Registration and classes will be held at the Westchester Education Center Spring Branch, 901 Yorkchester, Houston, Texas 77079.

The beginners' class, Czech I will meet on Tuesday evenings, starting September 12th and the advance class, Czech II will meet on Thursday evenings, starting September 14th.

All class hours in these 12 week courses will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each evening. Tuition for each course is $50 plus $5 registration fee for Spring Branch residents.

VI Camp

Dear Members, Well, I think everyone has finally rested up after our successful camp session at Camp Lone Star near La Grange. We all enjoyed 3 fun - filled days of swimming, crafts, games, dancing, kite decorating, singing, hiking and canoeing. Oh, and the nights were fun, too.

Friday night began with the LITs leading games they learned at LIT Retreat and then we hiked to a beautiful campfire by the lake for

singing. We listened to a ghost story before we took our spooky hike through the woods hoping we'd return to the Trading Post for refreshments.

I think the highlight of camp was the "Jamaican Me Crazy Party" planned by the LITs for Saturday night. We had several talented groups that entertained us with music and skits.

We all joined in on the South Train and Limbo around the pool. Then everyone jumped into the pool for a night time swim before eating watermelon and snowcones for refreshments.

July 20 through 23, we attended camp at Val Verde. We had a lot of youth and adults. Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to help out.

Everyone enjoyed the activities at camp which included swimming, canoeing, long horseback rides around the camp, arts and crafts where the boys painted toy cars -- girls made heart necklaces. Everyone also decorated a kite.

Saturday night we went on a hayride and went swimming afterwards.

All of you attend your meeting and stay active and I will see you next year at camp, because it will be here before you know it.

Lodge No. 160, San Angelo Two Pee Wee League baseball teams were sponsored at Wall this past season by Lodge 160, San Angelo.

There were 25 boys participating on these two teams. They were coached by Walter Holik, Jr., Leonard Jansa, Roger Halfmann, Steven Kadlacek

and Will Wilde. They played in a league of 7 teams. They played a double round - robin and played 12 games each.

This is the beginning for these boys to learn to play baseball and to participate in organized sports. This is the third year for Lodge 160 to have sponsored these teams. Both teams were very appreciative for this sponsorship.

Dear Vestnik Readers, In June we had a business meeting to talk about Polka Fest, our picnic with the adults, YAD and summer camp.

The Polka Fest was held. June 9, 10 and 11 at Bavarian Village. Everyone helped to make it a success and everyone enjoyed the good music and visiting with the people.

July 10, we had our family picnic in Preiss Heights Park. We spent the afternoon swimming and tubing on the Guadalupe River. We had supper of barbecue ribs and hot dogs plus all the trimmings. We had a short business meeting to discuss camp and YAD. Everyone had a good time.

On Sunday, July 16, we had YAD at the Bavarian Village. Our club had 100 percent participation. Everyone did real well on their projects.

After YAD, District VII youth went to Schlitterbahn for their district outing. Everyone had a real good time.

We are looking forward to going to camp on July 29, 30, 31 and August 1 at Camp Val Verde.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 40, El CampoHillje Youth Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The monthly meeting of the El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 Youth Club was held July 6, 1989 at the Commercial State Bank.

There were eleven members, three guests and six adults present.

The meeting was called to order by President Kim Kacal and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jarred Dybala.

Minutes were read by Secretary Martha Bartos. Danny Borak gave the treasurer's report.

Darrin Dybala gave a report on leaders - in - training camp held at Val Verde. We discussed a project held during Family Day on June 25th.

Members will leave for camp at 11:30 a.m. on July 7 from Wal - Mart.

Camp will be held at Lone Star Camp in La Grange.

Door prizes were brought and won by many members. Poems were also read.

Puzzles were completed by all members, also, Family Tree projects to be compiled, earn 25 points, YAD to be held August 13 at Hillje Hall, and July's projects were shown.

Our next meeting will be held on the first Thursday of the month, August 4,

Dear Vestnik Readers, On June 21, 1989, the Lodge 88 Houston Youth Club held their June social -- a pool party. About 6 p.m., the youth club members, parents and youth leaders met at Lodge 88 pool for a 2 - hour swim because the pool closes at 8 p.m.

Youth Club Member Julio Gloria's father is a D.J. (better known as "Jammin' Gene.") so, Eugene Gloria willingly volunteered to bring his music system and set it up at the Gazebo for some supreme entertainment. Because Youth Club Vice President Michelle Linney didn't wish to swim, she was in charge of

doing the music. Some people who helped her were Crystal Wallace, Cindy Groendes and Julio Gloria.

While everyone was swimming in the pool and jamming to a variety of music like Depeche Mode, The Dead Milkmen, New Order, Europe, Michael Jackson, and Modonna; the parents and Youth Leader Barbara Linney, Assistant Youth Leader Lou Groendes, Nancy Steubing, Diana Sokol, Vernon Sokol, Jan Gloria, Eugene Gloria, and Mr. and Mrs. Welfe were busy cooking and preparing our delicious meal. The meal consisted of hamburgers with all the fixings (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mayonnaise, catsup and mustard), potato chips and punch.

Youth Club members attending the social were Crystal Wallace, Tommie Wallace, Cindy Groendes, Julie Caton, Michelle Linney, Julio Gloria, Angela Gloria, Kristy Sokol, Amanda Havemann, Darrell Havemann, Nicholas Melissa Havemann, Havemann and Jennifer Welfe.

Even when the pool closed at 8 p.m., we remained at the lodge to eat our meal, dance and play on the playground, or watch members playing tennis at our tennis courts next to the pool. Everyone attending had a fabulous time swimming in the pool, listening and dancing to the sounds of fabulous music provided by "Jammin' Gene," and eating and enjoying the delicious food provided by our wonderful parents and youth leaders.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels Youth Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, June 1, we had our regular meeting and we talked about YAD and that everyone should have their projects finished. All of us will have jobs to do at YAD. We also talked about the picnic that was set for July 10th. We talked about games and where to swim.

In June, we had our Polka Fest at Bavarian Village. It was a lot of fun to help the adults and visit with all the people.

Dear Members, District III camp this year was July 20 - 23 at Camp Val Verde.

We had many campers and leaders from Lodge 66 this year. Everyone had a great time.

My activities favorite were horseback riding, archery and swimming. I liked the wooden heart necklaces and kites we made in craft this year, too.

Lodge 39 Bryan Youth Club Dear Members, Lodge 39 went to camp with District I -- July 17 - 20, 1989 at Camp Val Verde near Waco. We had ten members from our lodge who attended camp.

We went swimming, took night hikes and in craft, we made a puff paint shirt necklace, also made a kite.

After we were finished with making the kites, we had a kite - flying contest.

66 Waco Attend Youth Camp Lodge

Our youth of Lodge 66 of Elm Mott attended District III youth camp July 20 - 23rd.

One of the things I enjoy most about camp is seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Thursday, everyone spent the day getting settled at camp.

Friday night we had a penny carnival. We had 5 games and each game cost one penny. They gave us 15 pennies for all the games. We also had an inside - out and backward contest.

We had several funny - looking winners.

Saturday night we had skit night; some of the skits were "The Bat Legs," "The Spit Skit," and "First Day at Camp." Everyone did a good job doing their skits. After the skits, we went on a hayride and I think everyone enjoyed it.

Sunday, everyone put their cabins back in order. Everybody said good bye after a delicious chicken dinner. I hope to see you all next year at camp.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On Sunday, July 23, Lodge 88 Houston hosted District V Youth Achievement Day. The day began with a delicious meal consisting of ham, baked beans and potato salad. The program started with District V Flag Bearer Darlene Migl presenting the colors and leading the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. DYC Marie Stayton then introduced the Mistresses of Ceremonies, Marlene and Darlene Migl. Marlene is District V Youth Club president and Darlene, her twin sister, is Lodge 88 Youth Club president.

First came Individual Talent.

Mistress of Ceremonies Marlene Migl introduced the contestants. In age group 6 - 9, Daniel Mabry (142) sang

"Lollipop Tree." In age group 10 - 12, Kristi Sokol (88) performed a dance to "Iko Iko," John Buri (142) played "Beautiful Heaven" on the accordian, Matthew Mabry (142) sang "Oklahoma," and Lindsey Michalek (88) sang "The Greatest Love of All." In age group 13 - 14, Melissa Havemann (88) performed "Jail House Rock" dance number, and in age group 15 - 17, Crystal Wallace (88) sang "Climb Every Mountain" from the Sound of Music.

Next came Group Talent. Mistress of Ceremonies Darlene Migl introduced the contestants. In the Junior Group, Daniel and Matthew Mabry (142) performed to "Love in Every Language." In Senior Group, Crystal Wallace along with Cindy Groendes (88) performed a song/skit to "Side - by - Side."

After a short intermission, the Royalty candidates for 1989 were introduced. Queen contestants included Michelle Linney (88) with Amanda Hermis (142), Crystal Wallace with Melissa Havemann (both of Lodge 88), Keith Kieschnick (142) with Nicholas Havemann (88), was our only king contestant.

After hearing each of their speeches, the judges came to a decision. The 1989 Royalty Court of District V is Queen Crystal Wallace with her Duchess Melissa Havemann and King Keith Kieschnick with his Duke Nicholas Havemann. What a coincidence -- they were also last year's District V Queen and King.

Congratulations! Crystal, Melissa, Keith and Nicholas will be competing at State YAD for State King and Queen on August 26 at Lodge No. 47, Seaton. Good luck!

Top Point District V winners were also announced. They are: Lodge 88 top 5 Juniors: Kristi Sokol, Cindy Groendes, Julio Gloria, Angela Gloria and Amanda Havemann. Top 88 Teens: Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace and Tommie Wallace. Top 5 Juniors of Lodge 142: John Buri, Jason Hermis, Amanda Hermis, Daniel Mabry and Matthew Mabry. Top Teen of Lodge 142 is Keith Kieschnick. Top District V Teen is Michelle Linney and Top Junior is John Buri. Congratulations!

It was nice to see all of the wonderful members and guests supporting all of our youth. Even District VI DYC Anita Roye came out to see our YAD and check out the competition. Just kidding! It was a nice surprise to see Anita and her two daughters Stephanie and Valerie. All of our youth are still talking about the two years we spent camping with the District VI youth.

Congratulations to all of the youngsters who competed in YAD. You are all winners! See you all at State YAD on August 26th and 27th.

24 Cyclone Youth Has Many YAD Winners Lodge

Dear Readers, The July 30, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Steve Bruggman.

Jennifer and Jeffrey Ashcraft led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Secretary Kristie Waits called the roll. Present were 16 members, 5 adults and one guest, Valerie Bruggman. The minutes were then read and approved.

Carl Macek gave the treasurer's report and the balance was $728.87.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell announced we will begin selling candy bars in October to raise money for our club.

The campers just returned from camp and the youth members from Lodge 24, who attended, thoroughly enjoyed it.

A few upcoming dates to mark on your calendars include: Saturday, August 26 -- State Royalty at Lodge 47, Seaton; Sunday, August 27 -- State YAD at Frank Mayborn Center in Temple; Saturday, September 9 -District II trip to Six Flags Over Texas; Sunday, September 24 -- District II Fall Meeting, which will be hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton and Sunday, October 1 -- Fraternal Czech Fest at the Expo Center in Belton. Please make an effort to attend these important events and support our Czech heritage.

After our meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m., the youth members , and parents ventured to Summer Fun USA in Belton, where everyone had tons of fun in the water and the sun!

Lodge 39 Bryan Youth Club Meeting Dear Members, Our youth club has been very busy practicing and preparing for YAD. I just turned six years old on July 30th. 1 cannot participate in YAD this year, but it has been fun watching the practices and learning about everything. I can't wait until next year so I can participate in YAD and camp, too.

Our July meeting was my first official meeting as a "real" member. I did my first program, won a door prize and participated in the club charity project. It was a lot of fun.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On July 21, 1989, Lodge 88 Youth Club spent an enjoyable afternoon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the children and their counselors at the Lighthouse for the Blind.

We brought a cooked lunch, which we served, consisting of hot dogs with potato chips, nachos, cookies and sodapop. Before and after the meal, our youth club members swam at the Lighthouse pool with the other children. We also got to play on the trampoline, and we presented the children with some toys.

Youth members who attended were Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Shannon McGee, Cindy Groendes, Jennifer Welfl. Darell Havemann, Darren Havemann and Crystal Wallace. Also attending were Youth Leader Barbara Linney; her Assistant Youth Leader Lou Groendes, Carol Havemann and Mrs. Welfl.

I just want to say that I thought it was a wonderful experience. I got to meet some neat people and made some new friends. The kids are really unique and it was very different to talk to kids in their type of situation.

Finally, I'd like to mention that one of the counselors found it hard to understand why would we come and serve them food, play with them, and give them toys. Cindy and I just told him that we were nice people and enjoyed helping people. I really enjoyed the day and hope that we can go back real soon.

13 Dime Box July Monthly Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, On Sunday, July 16, the Dime Box SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting.

The new officers for the year are: President -- Susan Spacek, Vice President -- Mike Whitsel, Secretary -Trudy Krenek, Treasurer -- Jennifer Gold, Reporter and Sergeant - at Arms -- Darden Hervey.

Susan Spacek called the meeting to order. Stacy Spacek led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Trudy Krenek read the minutes from the May meeting. Jennifer Gold gave the treasurer's report.

Our youth leaders, Mrs. Ford, announced that we will no longer pick up trash along Farm Road 141. She also discussed camp and told us what they needed for camp. YAD cards were turned in.

The meeting was then adjourned and everyone was treated to a soda water.

District V Youth. Trip To San Antonio Dear Vestnik Readers, On June 16, 1989, the District V long - awaited trip finally began; they were off to San Antonio on their "Express" bus with driver, Mary.

After the long and enduring 4 - hour drive was over, the youth members, chaperones and leaders went to eat at the Red Barn Restaurant. After this, we headed to where we would be staying the weekend at Lackland Air Force Base. We stayed in a two - story building, with the boys on the top story and girls on the bottom story.

After we ate at the base, we headed to downtown San Antonio to visit the river walk and river center shopping area. The best part was our river walk boat ride. Everyone loved shouting "oee" whenever our boat operator said "1 - 2 - 3." This continued throughout the whole weekend! Also, we said: "We love it," whenever he said: "How do you like San Antonio?" plus, when he said: "How's the weather here?" We replied with: "Hot, hot, hot!" Lastly, after the ride through the area with fantastic buildings and Mexican restaurants, we were free to shop in the Riverwalk Mall. After meeting back at the base, we ended the day and went back to the base for a good night's rest.

The next day, we began with a big breakfast on the base, and then we headed for our ultimate destination -Sea World. After we received our tickets, we were free to roam the park.

One of everyone's favorite show was definitely Shamu! Some other shows going on during the day were New Friends, Sea Lion - Walrus - Otter, Wheels and the Water Ski Show. Other, areas that are of constant viewing were sharks, the Coral Reef, Texas Walk and Cypress Gardens West, Garden of Flags, Touching and Feeding a Dolphin - pool and Cap'n Kids World Playground.

Everyone ate lunch on their own in Sea World, with their own money.

Mary bought some souvenirs such as huge Sea World cups, T - Shirts, hats and stuffed animals.

Next, we headed back to the river walk to eat dinner at a very nice Mexican restaurant called "La Liera."

The reservations were made by Lora Mabry, Lodge 142 youth leader, and her husband, Ed, the night before.

Before we went, though, we had time to look around and maybe buy a few things in some real Hispanic style shops. After the delicious meal, we

The next day, after eating breakfast on the base, we took a tour of the base.

We first went to the Air Force Museum, where we also got to see an interesting film. Then, our bus driver, Mary, drove us around the base where we saw the living areas of the families of people in the Air Force there.

Finally, we went to where a bunch of different type of planes and a description of them were located.

Here, we were free to roam around on our own.

After a super dinner on the base, we headed to the famous mission -- turned into a fort -- The Alamo. There we went and walked around the actual fort and the museum. Then, for our last destination, we went to the Texas Cultural History Museum. There, we found a really neat Czech exhibit among some really great cultural exhibits.

Then, our dreaded moment had come; we headed home to Houston.

On our way back, we had to drop Marlene and Darlene Migl off and we stopped and ate dinner at Frank's.

Very soon, after that, we had arrived back in Houston.

It was a wonderful trip, and I enjoyed it very much! There are a few people who really need to be thanked; first of all, "thank you" to our wonderful District V DYC Marie Stayton; without her, the trip would never have gotten started. Also, thanks to District V Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing; she was the one who found out about staying on the base and made it possible that we could; also thanks to Lodge 88 Board of Trustees for letting us use the kitchen to raise the money. Thanks to mother Jo Ann Buri of Lodge 142 for managing all the money; thanks to all the many chaperones on the trip, namely, A.J. Stayton, Mr. Buri, Mr. and Mrs. Sokol, Cindy Havemann, Ed Mabry, Dennis Hermis and Mr. and Mrs. Gloria; also thanks to all the youth leaders: Barbara Linney (Lodge 88), Lou Groendes (assistant), Lora Mabry (Lodge 142), and Elizabeth Hermis (assistant). Also, thanks to our wonderful bus driver, Mary! We hope you get to drive us to camp in July.

Finally, I want to say that our LITs did a great job. Marie kept them busy all the time. They were always doing such things as helping load and unload the bus, keeping the kids in line, helping them with problems, and taking head counts before and after each departure. Our LITs, on the trip, were Crystal Wallace, Marlene Migl, Darlene Migl, Tommie Wallace, Angela Clayton, Michelle Linney and Brian Havemann, all from Lodge 88. I had a great time, and I am looking forward to next summer's trip and Lodge 88's trip.

The rest home residents thoroughly enjoyed a picnic in the Taylor Park in June.

Residents attending were taken by cars to the park, namely, Mildred Alhgreen, John Kotrla, Emilia Sellers, Mattie Fuller, Lydia Roepke, Julia Chalupa, Ella Schwenker, Adele Freels, Betty Lou Krieg, Ella Yeager, Clara Moerbe, Annie Holubec, Helen Wilde, Myrtle Hall, Vanessa Finn, Josephine Meier, Mary Burke, Cornelia Benad, Dr. George Kubala and Clara Alhberg.

The residents each were served a chicken basket of fried chicken, slaw, mashed potatoes with gravy and a biscuit.

Mrs. Alma Zimmerhanzel made the Angel cakes and Pauline Kovar made Chocolate Chip cookies for dessert.

Mrs. Margarie Bird, Irene Schroeder, Alma Zimmerhanzel, Elizabeth Vorwerk, Diane Volek, Ilyn Kaspar and Frances Schwenker helped serve each resident and furnished the cars to bring them to the park.

Natalie Dawn Hamrick and Douglas Lynn Janecka (Lodge 154), exchanged wedding vows under the gazebo located in the Rodeo Plaza of Billy Bob's Complex at the historic stockyards area of North Fort Worth on Saturday, June 17, 1989, at 6:30 p.m.

Judge Alford Bush of Ranger, Texas performed the double - ring ceremony.

Douglas is the son of Lawrence (Lodge 92) and Bernice (Lodge 154) Janecka of Eastland, Texas, and Natalie is the daughter of Jim and Mary Hamrick of Charleston, West Virginia. The bride was given in marriage by her parents.

iridescents lavished the gown with groupings of dangling bugle beads.

The back of the gown was embellished with lace, iridescents , and pearls which led into a beautiful chapel length train. Enhancing this lovely ensemble was a headband - style veil with dainty flowers layered with a cluster of jeweled sequins and pearls.

The back was finished with a pouf and a single tier fingertip illusion. She carried a bouquet of peach and white flowers.

Rudy Janecka (Lodge 180) of Burleson, Texas, brother of the groom, served as best man.

The junior bridesmaid and flower girl were attired in white gowns with peach flowers and accessories. The groom and ring bearer wore all white tuxedos with peach boutonnieres. The matron of honor and bridesmaids wore peach and black gowns and the best man and groomsmen wore black tuxedos, white shirts and peach boutonnieres.

Other attendants included Suzanne Janecka (Lodge 180) of Burleson, Texas, and Debbie Thomas, Brad Sorensen and Brock Stevenson, all of Fort Worth.

Cecil and Jan Tippett provided songs and music during the ceremony.

A dinner and dance at Wayne's Silver Spur adjacent to the plaza followed the wedding ceremony.

Julie Janecka (Lodge 180) served as junior bridesmaid and Shanna Janecka was flower girl. Both are nieces of the groom. Chris Janecka, nephew of the groom, was ring bearer.

A rehearsal dinner on Friday evening, June 16, was hosted by the groom's parents at the famous Joe T. Garcia Restaurant, also a historic landmark in North Fort Worth for over 50 years.

Beth Vesco of Ohio was her sister's matron of honor.

The bride was elegant in a sophisticated gown designed by Ilissa.

Reunions Barta-Valenta-Havel-Vlasak Reunion The 32nd reunion of Barta - Valenta - Havel - Vlasak will be held at the American Legion Hall in Shiner, Texas on Sunday, August 20, 1989. All relatives and friends are invited and each family is asked to bring food for their own individuals. Cups, plates and tea will be furnished by the committee for the noon meal. Shenkir Reunion The families of John and Frances Shenkir will gather together on Sunday, August 13, 1989 beginning at 10 a.m. at Seaton Community Center in Seaton, Texas located on East Hwy. 53 approximately 9 miles east of Temple. Lunch served from 12 to 12:30 p.m. As usual, bring a covered dish, etc. Eating utensils, tea, coffee and bread will be furnished. Last year we had 56 registered family members and guests. This is a drop off from 150 just a few years ago. We need you if we are going to continue having a reunion. Please make an extra special effort to attend this year.
