[The following is an editorial from the Temple Daily Telegram which appeared April 18, 1969; twenty years ago-Editor] Preserving a heritage -- It is worthy of note that the new SPJST building on North Main Street will contain an archives, library and museum designed to preserve the heritage of Czech descendants in Texas. For Czech heritage is a part of Texas heritage and no more fitting place could be found for the preservation of such a culture.

As any student of Texas history knows, this state was made by people of several cultures. Far from the least among them were the Czech people who came to America in the last half of the 1800s and on into this century.

Thousands debarked at Galveston and pushed on into the Texas interior, following the Blacklands belt as they brought their love of the land and exceptional ability at farming to what was then raw land.

In time, Temple became a center of Czech descendants and no area, no country could boast better citizens.

Czech immigrants brought and their descendants maintain, a love of freedom, strong family unity and concern for an orderly society. Such attributes have always been and remain the keystones of a free society.

The Czech people learned their lessons the hard way. For hundreds of years they stood at the crossroads of Europe, caught in the ebb and flow as medieval tribes fought back and forth.

Even in modern times what is today Czechoslovakia has been mangled by the power plays of major European nations. Yet it is in Czechosiovakia that the fires of freedom still burn brightest behind the Iron Curtain.

The SPJST's action in setting aside space for preservation of such a heritage is in the highest spirit of public service. It could go far in making Temple a principal center of Czech culture in Texas. And considering what the Czech people have contributed to this area, nothing could be more fitting.

Now, 20 years later, we feel that the Library - Archives - Museum (LAM) Department all have proved to be a great asset to our SPJST, our Supreme Lodge and to Temple. And now we have added the ability for members and friends to do genealogical research. *** There are times when this writer feels that too many of us think of the present, mainly and that we do NOT give enough thought to the future; in fact, we think: "What will I gain out of this?" in a somewhat selfish way.

That has been expressed some time ago when a member was heard to remark

that a (FRA) Fraternal Recreational Area of our SPJST would NOT benefit their family in any way because they would not be able to use it themselves! That argument may apply to many of us pertaining to many of the benefits our SPJST. Society offers us -- camps, youth clubs, rest homes, etc., however, every one of these benefits is being used by a certain number of us, therefore, we simply cannot consider them in a personal way such as -- what will it benefit me?

When our founders formed our Society nearly one hundred years ago, they were not thinking mainly and only of themselves and what gain they will get, but they were ,laying a foundation for generations to come and planning how they could benefit the future -this means US! Now, it is up to our generation to plan for NOW and the FUTURE of ALL Let us go forward with the same spirit they did! They founded a very democratic fraternal benefit society where men and women had and have equal voice, regardless of religious or political affiliations (which are not to be discussed in our meetings), regardless of financial standing, etc. and planned out a future to benefit all their members the most From those well - laid plans, we are all beneficiaries NOW. It is up to us now to carry on their far - sighted plans; we owe it to them and our future generations. It is in our hands NOW! ***

Students may be in for another shot.

Reported cases of measles are up 380 percent over last year, with most of them hitting junior and senior high school kids and college students. The surge may be due to waning immunity, a 5 percent failure rate and a pool of unvaccinated children, says Dr. Stanley Plotkin of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on infectious diseases. Since older children are more susceptible to pneumonia and other complications of measles, the late onset is particularly worrisome.

In response, the AAP now recommends a first dose of the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine at age 15 months, followed by a second MMR shot when a child enters junior high. The old recommendation was for a single dose at 15 months. In cities with particularly high measles rates, such as Chicago and Los Angeles, the first shot should be given at 9 to 12 months, says committee member Dr. G. Scott Giebink. Parents should check with pediatricians to see if revaccination of older kids is now warranted. The vaccine, which occasionally causes a fever or rash, is about 95 percent effective. It costs $16 to $27 and is available through public - health clinics and private doctors. ***

From The President's Office SPJST To Sponsor Fund Raising Projects For The Renovation Of The Battleship Texas And Czech Chair March - September 1989 Dear Officers and Members: The Supreme Lodge approved the proposal to help raise funds to restore and renovate the Battleship "Texas" and also at the same time to raise donations for the Czech Chair. Both projects are tax - deductible contributions.

"To establish a major new Czech Studies Program in our State, THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS is conducting a drive to fund an Endowed Educational Chair at a major Texas University. The establishment of the chair will insure that a Czech teacher will always be available and that Czech language will always be taught."* "Since the early years of this century, the Czech youth of this state have had the opportunity to study the language and culture of their forebearers at state universities. Czech classes have served to bring generations together and foster a love and understanding of our immigrant ancestors and their values.''* Battleship "Texas" is now a memorial ship owned by Texas and was called the "Flagship." Battleship "Texas" played a very important part in World War II and was used in many battles. *Reference -- Support the Czech Chair Brochure.

Battleship "Texas" has 150,000 visitors each year, but now is in critical need of major repair and must be towed into the shipyards for repair.

The complete cost of restoring the battleship is estimated to cost 13.4 million and all Texans are asked for their help in raising these funds.

Battleship "Texas" helped save our country and now we need to save her, won't you help?

We are hoping to reach our goals for

these projects by September 1, 1989.

We realize that while some lodges may have funds available, others may not, but they may want to solicit contributions from members or sponsor an activity to raise funds. In any case, we certainly hope that the effort you make in support of these projects will be richly rewarded in the benefits of fraternal "involvement."

Your lodge's goal amount is ten cents per member. The amount may be more or less. Each lodge that meets their goal(s) will have their lodge name in the Vestnik and what project(s) they supported. Individual contributors will also be recognized in the Vestnik.

The thermometer of progress will be in the Vestnik. Lodge donations and individual donations are encouraged.

Donation checks should be made to SPJST and mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; Attention: Office of the President. After all contributions are collected one check will be distributed from the Supreme Lodge to each project. Therefore, at this time we are soliciting you and your lodge's help with these important projects.

We are asking each lodge to donate a minimum of 10 cents per member to at least one of the worthwhile projects.

If it is possible, please support both projects.

The Supreme Lodge will match each lodge's donation up to the amount of $2,500 for each project. You can be sure that we at the Supreme Lodge greatly appreciate your help.

SPJST can meet its goals only if we act on these fraternal commitments before September 1, 1989.

Let us all help keep these projects alive.

From LAM Department The Genealogy Research and Storage Center of the SPJST Library Archives - Museum has received many genealogical and historical books, papers and microfilms from the wife and family of the late ALBERT J. BLAHA. These items are for the use of Czech, German, Polish and other ethnic groups; included are microfilms of passenger lists from New York, New Orleans, Galveston and Baltimore from the 1850s and also microfilms of the Census Records of Fayette, Lavaca, Washington, Colorado and several other counties, which had large Czech populations.

Books of the marriage, census, naturalization, Declaration of Intentions of Czechs in many of these counties, the church records of several churches, the obituaries and church records of the Czech Brethren Church (CMB) early churches, cemetery records of several county cemeteries, maps, and how - to and where - to books, are all available for in - house use.

Albert J. Blaha awakened many of us to the realization that our Czech roots are slipping away. To know our roots and connections enriches our lives; and the lives of our children and grandchildren. "It's later than you think!"

Friday night, July 7 was our monthly lodge meeting. President Johnnie Krizan opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag by our membership led by Tammi Dobecka who also read the SPJST Youth Motto.

First, thanks were given to Robert Dobecka family and Willie Mae Schuetz for cooking the meal for us before the meeting and to those who brought other dishes that go good and taste good to complete the meal.

Next, the president called on the officers for their reports. Karen Kroll read the minutes of our last meeting for Barbara Hykel, being absent.

Karen, also gave her treasurer's report for May and June which were accepted as given.

Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report and also the Board of Trustees' meeting that was held Friday night, June 30th.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz expressed her thanks to Peggy Dobecka and Lydia Dobecka for taking care of the youth who attended District III YAD at Ennis on June 25th. We had several entries and winners in the craft, the youth leader will give her correct report on all of this in her letter.

We also had a nice presentation by Bobby Dobecka to Lannette (Hykel) Gerik who received a scholarship from the Dobecka family in honor of their daughter Teresa Dobecka (Memorial Fund).

Brother Rudy Sefcik was invited to our meeting and he was presented a donation from our Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood to the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas. He also was taking some pictures of this affair. (Our pictures didn't arrive in time to accompany my report.)

Robert Dobecka, FAC, announced all the committees he appointed to work for our annual lodge picnic July 16, was also in charge of purchasing all the groceries for the kitchen plus other things needed for the meal and bar including advertising.

President Johnnie Krizan was in charge of donations and auction.

Many thanks to the auctioneers and to all who donated items.

Bobby and Peggy Dobecka were taking care of the prize tickets. The winners were: $100 -- Danny Urbanovsky $75 -- Carol Toliver $50 -- Lillian Perez $25 J.K. Jupe The 92nd annual picnic of Lodge was a success and the attendance was great. Dear Members: Well, talk about hot weather, we sure are having it now. I am ready for the fall of the year.

The regular meeting of Lodge 15 was opened by President Shiller leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Now, remember, on August 5 we will have a big day. We are asking each member to donate 2 items for the country store; it can be anything. We sure could use some more workers, so if you can help be sure and come.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 24 was held Sunday, July 9th.

Our attendance was down because of many of our members attending Youth Achievement Day at the SPJST Hall in Holland. We did have one guest with us at our meeting and that was Henry Mares of Seaton Lodge 47. Welcome to our meeting and come join us again!

Our deepest sympathy goes to the families of Lydia Zabcik and Rosie Vasek, who have died since our last meeting. Also, our very deepest sympathy goes to the family of Eddie Jecmenek who was killed in a car train accident on June 18th. These fine members will all be missed by many in our community.

Birthdays for July are Barbara Macek (July 3) and Johnny Chervenka (July 18). Happy days are wished to these fine members of our lodge.

The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, June 17, 1989, following the games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order, having Kim Kacal, youth member, to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silent prayer was observed for our deceased and sick members, especially. Mary Baca, who passed away since our last meeting.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers; all were present except Trustee James Bacak.

The minutes of our previous meetings held on May 15 and June 24, 1989, were read and approved.

All correspondence was read thank you notes from Harry and Mildred Hafernick thanking our lodge for "Fifty - Year Pin" presentation and social. They enjoyed the meeting and renewing old acquaintances, thank you note from Julie Smelley for sponsorship to 1989 Session of Girls' State, thank you note from Landis Kopecky for scholarship, new Insurance - Annuities for May and June, 1989 and a letter from Craig Harris Post 25 expressing appreciation of our support of sponsoring a local area high school boy to attend 1989 American Legion Boys' State Program.

President Rita Vanek announced American Legion meeting on August 15 to her Girls' State report and District VI Fall Social planning meeting at Elaine Berkovsky's home at 7:30 p.m. on August 4th.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dora Lee Kopecky spoke of the importance of keeping and recording fraternal acts. Forms were given to members to better record their activities.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on summer camp activities and planning of District VI YAD to be held at our lodge on August 13, 1989.

Members accepted Helen M. Hlavaty, Donald Paul Kubecka, Jr., Catherine R. Hrncir and Christine R. Kocurek as new members of our lodge.

Lodge No. 9, Rowena The Rowena Baseball Association is sponsoring a Baseball Tournament on the grounds of the SPJST Hall and the Rowena City Square starting Friday, July 28, 29 and 30th.

There will be approximately 30 teams, men and women represented.

They will be from Rowena, Olfen, Miles, San Angelo, Ballinger, Winters and Sweetwater. The public is invited to attend.

Our Lodge No. 49 refreshment stand will be open before and during the games; beer, soda pop, snow cones, nachoes, chili dogs and hamburgers will be available. We will be looking forward to seeing everyone come watch the games.

Lodge No. 81, Needville The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81, Needville, was held on Tuesday, July 11, 1989 with seventeen members attending. President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order at 7 p.m.

Sister Mary Matcek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Following the pledge we observed a moment of silence in memory of our departed member, Brother John Zajicek. Sincere sympathy is extended to his family. May he rest in peace.

All officers were present. Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the June meeting and also the minutes of the July 5 special meeting concerning construction details of the new parking area. After one correction, both sets of minutes were approved.

Secretary Werner also read a thank you note from the family of Mary Zubik.

A letter from Supreme Lodge concerning the funding of a Czech (university) Chair and the restoration of the Battleship Texas was read by President Macek. Members voted to send a contribution to each of these worthy projects.

Financial Secretary Werner presented her report, followed by Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's report. Both were accepted as read.

The special fund report for the month of June was given by Brother Gilbert Walzel and also approved as read.

Sister Vlasta Hurta, who has been on our sick list, is recuperating at home, and Brother Herbert Nowotny is progressing in his recovery at Polly Ryon Skilled Care Nursing Center. We all send our best wishes for good health to you, Vlasta and Herbert.

One new member, Jeanette Newman, was accepted into membership of Lodge No. 81.

Under old business, Brother Walzel brought us up to date on the progress made so far on the construction of the new parking lot.

The new bridge has been completed and water meter hooked up. Disposal of the old bridge, re - use of the mercury vapor lights and disposal of fill dirt were discussed.

Members are eagerly awaiting completion of the new concrete parking area, which will be a valuable asset not only, to members, but to all who use the lodge hall. No more squishy, wet and muddy shoes!

There was no new business on the agenda and we proceeded to the drawing of door prizes. Sister Benita Walzel drew the names of these lucky recipients -- Willie Mae Kuykendall, Adolph Macha, Victor Werner, and Mary Werner.

Following the June rains, the Needville area is now experiencing very hot and dry weather. The maize and sorghum harvest is in full swing, however, the pesky boll weevil is infesting many area cotton fields.

Please mark your calendar for August 8, 1989 and plan to attend the meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. and try out the new parking area.

You are invited to come to the hall on Sunday, August 13 beginning at 4 p.m. for a dinner, compliments of Lodge 84, and program. Members of your family and friends and all other lodge members are also invited to attend to give honor to you, but they will be asked to pay a nominal fee for their food.

Sunshine Committee by Sister Lillie Jarma (who drove Brother Ben Jarma to the meeting) good reports on his knee operation were heard, and she sent get well cards to Shelly Pool and Helen Vr1a. A sympathy card was sent to Eddie and Diane Oates on loss of baby boy.

Brother Petr gave his report on hall rental.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on YAD in Ennis and she expressed her delight on so much talent place winners as well as the king, and queen from Lodge 84. Congratulations to all!

The Princess Ball at the lodge last Saturday was a success and we congratulate Kyle Matus, our lodge king, and Leslie Barnes, our lodge queen. Sister Bessie also reported that Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meets Thursday, September 7 at Ennis.

SPJST Lodge No. 25 and 135 plus WFLA 402 are hosts, and the Czech Culture Society meets July 31 at the Czech Club.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ida Schulz reported on more dues arriving.

She reported the appreciation banquet honoring our 70 - year and over members scheduled for August 13 at 4 p.m. has been finalized and invitations are being sent. All other members are welcome, to attend this get - together.

Our Czechfest on September 10 will have doors open at 11:30 a.m., dinner (roast and gravy with parsley potatoes, green beans, sauerkraut, bread, tea or coffee and dessert) for $5.50 adults -$3 child, will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Our ladies of the lodge are asked to bring pastry for the meal. Many members inquire as well as donate to this once - a - year event and this year we need items for the gift booth, cake walk, groceries for the country store, etc. One member, Sister Justine Pokladnik, reports the handmade afghan she knitted is ready for delivery! Will you help contribute to this fund raiser? There will be a FREE dance with music by the Mynarcik Band from 3 to 7 p.m., so you all come.

October 29 -- Halloween Dance, come in costume and you get in free; others will pay $1 per person. The Mynarcik Band plays for this one, too.

August 5 -- Dance to The Czechmates.

August 19 -- Jodie Mikula.

September 16 -- Lone Star Czechs.

October 7 -- Czech Harvesters (Texas State Fair Dance).

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, July 26, 1989

Lodge No. 107, Floresville I haven't written in several months so I'll take time to let everyone know what has been happening at Lodge 107.

At the May meeting, we had our initiation into Taroky playing; we had four tables at the initial session, since then, only one or two tables after each meeting. Personally, I find it very fascinating and I'm sure the longer you play, the more addicted you could get.

At the May meeting, with President Leshikar, we also presented our 50 year member, Mrs. Agnes Hosek, her award pin. We enjoyed Frank and Irma Klinkovsky's visit and, of course, the tutoring session.

Donations were made to the Floresville Nursing Center in the loaning of chairs and tables for their open house. They expressed their appreciation.

A donation of $50 was made to the Battleship Texas Fund and also $50 to the Czech Chair Foundation.

In June, a donation of $30 was made to the Santa Rosa Children's Hospital Telethon. Lodge 107 had a member who was a patient in the Luekemia Ward at one time and the members voted to donate toward this project.

Although Brendon did not make it, perhaps more research may find a cure in the future.

DYC Maxine Pavliska and Rusty Condra returned from LIT workshop just in time to give a short report.

Maxine stated attendance had improved 300 percent from 1988. She felt that good leaders for our youth program were being trained.

The July meeting was short, not much business was discussed.

One of our members, Petrolina Hrbacek of Gonzales, had passed away.

Our youth leader planned an outing to Natural Bridge Caverns on July 22nd.

It was voted to have our District VII Fall Meeting and Social on October 22, 1989. President Bayer will have more details later.

Our next meeting will be held on August 13th. Youth Club will meet at 2:30 p.m. -- recreation activities at 3 p.m. and adult meeting at 4 p.m. Make plans to be there.

On Sunday, July 9, 1989, at 2 p.m., our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 51 members, 4 visitors and 12 children present. All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

In roll call of officers all were present. Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from our previous month's meeting. These stood approved as read.

Financial Secretary - Treasurer's report was read by Brother Sidon Tumis.

The Board of Trustees and bar reports were read by Sister Rosie Schilhab.

Youth Club report was read by Keith Kieschnick.

and Stephen C. McFadden -- Sales Representative Sidon Tumis with five new members.

Visitors were Mrs. Jo Buri, Mrs. Jo Ann Buri, Jim Owens and Joe Gambil.

President Dennis Hermis thanked everyone who worked and helped make our Lodge Stefanik 70th anniversary a success and also thanked everyone who came out to celebrate with us.

It was announced to come to YAD at Lodge 88 on July 23 and be with our youth -- Keith Kieschnick will run for king at YAD. Birthdays for July are: Amanda Hermis (July 2), Lorraine Motl (July 5), Rosie Schilhab (July 12), Dorothy Hermis (July 15), Henrietta Veselka (July 19), Gus Molenosky (July 22) and Dennis Hermis (July 27).

July 30 -- Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buri (51st wedding anniversary).

Capsule drawing for $100 went unclaimed due to the absence of Stephen E. Tanner and Shirley A. Brezina. We will draw again for $100 on Sunday, August 13th at our next monthly meeting, come out to join us because you may be the lucky one!

Youngest member prize of $5 went to 3 - year - old Andrew Lehoski.

Four door prizes went to Fred H. Buri, Lillian Schmidt, Gus Molenosky and Cynthia Lehoski.

Greetings From Lodge No. 183, Arlington Dear Members: The Fourth of July Parade was a great event for Lodge 183; there were 9 members and 3 drivers who volunteered to use their convertibles in the parade. Those involved were Inez Greenlees, her sister, Marilyn Seely (played accordian), Jeanne Roznos, Dorothy Kral, Ed Kral, Robert Sill,

Pat Sill, Phill Boyle and Norman Kneschk. Three drivers, Joe and Mrs. Passomano and Mel Gilbert, also two accordian players from the Cen - Tex Polka Band who brightened the day, entertained the viewers as the parade moved along. Then, there were a couple of members who danced in the street in front of the viewing stand, namely, Norman Kneschk and Inez Greenlees. Pat and Robert Sill taped the parade and plan to show it at the next 7 to 11 Family Night which will be Friday, July 28, so be there and see the action.

Wednesday, July 26, 1989—VESTNIK/7 Roy and Lydia Alholm are vacationing in San Diego, California, while Lydia is attending the Navy Women's Convention. On their return home, they will meet Roy's brother from Ryderwood, Washington and a cousin and family from Torrance, California in Las Vegas. Good luck and return safely.

Billye Starr, our hostess chairman, announced our hostesses for our August 2 meeting will be Josephine Bugaj, Geneva Hennessey and Agnes Reznicek -- a cold luncheon as the last meeting. With all this hot weather it was enjoyed by all.

Gracie and I were unable to attend the last regular monthly meeting because we were attending a wedding of one of my cousin's daughters in Houston. The reception and dance were at KC Hall afterwards and we had a great time. Then, we spent some time at Gracie's sister and niece at Tomball, Texas which is just a short drive from Houston. We, also drove

by Fame City Recreation Center in Houston that is where the Hermann Sons State Bowling Tournament will be held this year, the first week in August, and we plan to attend this year again. The center is a great place with entertainment for everyone.

There were only a few members present for the meeting this month and Charlie Bragg won the $25 door prize.

There is always a winner; you just have to be there to win.

This letter is short; just like the three bulls that escaped from the pasture.

The two large bulls were captured easily, but the small one was found miles away after a lengthy search.

That's because a little bull goes a long way.

Club, Lodge 88, Houston Birthday

On July 12, 1989 the Lodge 88 Birthday Club met in the dining room under the leadership of President Kathy Trefell. She opened the meeting at 11:15 a.m. with the roll call. We had a very good attendance despite the terrible heat and humidity we've experienced lately.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes from the previous meeting.

Rosalee has just come back from a trip to Czechoslovakia and we were glad to see her in her usual place.

Lillie Spies, our faithful treasurer, gave a good financial report. She's also planning a trip to London next month to see her daughter, Aggie and husband, Joe. Our Sunshine Lady Mary Kosut reported on the cards she sent to the ill.

Mary is doing better after quite a bout, and we are happy she's back in action.

After we tried so hard for cooks in August it was all in vain. My opinion is, it's just too hot to cook for 100 people in a hot kitchen. We unanimously decided to buy fried chicken and then the club members bring a covered dish of vegetables and salad. Six ladies offered to bring cake the first week, and they are Mary Schenburn -- 2 cakes, Willie Mae Stang, Lillian Finn, Pearl Hanka and Ima Lero each one cake. The second week we'll serve sandwiches and the ladies will bring cakes; they are Inez

Jeanes -- 2 cakes, Marie Pokluda, Lillian Finn, Clara Jecmenek and Helen Hegwood each one cake.

Our President Kathy Trefell announced that YAD is scheduled for July 23 at Lodge 88. A ham dinner will be served by Annie Vala and her helpers on that day and the Birthday Club will help furnish the pastry. We do hope to get some pastry from the members of Lodge 88, also.

Our unusual event, which will take place on July 29 at Lodge 88 from 2 to 4 p.m. is the celebration of Mrs. Herman (Annie) Baethe's 100th birthday. The meal is being catered but since we are not quite sure how many will attend, Lillian Finn made a motion, seconded by Mary Kosut to make some additional sandwiches.

This motion was passed unanimously.

President Kathy Trefell's gift was won by Marie Pokluda and Virginia Hale's gift was won by Emma Jarisch and the Calcutta game was won by Ardith McClellan and Alice Bily.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to 11 birthday celebrities.

Our hostesses were Bessie Dewer cooked for Birdie Pech, Gladys Pulley, Delores Condon cooked for Alma McNaspy and Margaret Spahr.

We adjourned at 12 noon with Mary Kosut giving the blessing.

The members are excited about the meeting with the Czech Circle Women's Club of Dallas which will be Friday, August 18, 11 a.m., held at the Sokol Athletic Center, 7448 Greenville Avenue. (I am sorry I will miss it because I will be in St. Louis. I have many longtime friends in that Circle, who I always enjoy being with. I will be thinking about all of you.)

We extend our sincere sympathy to Mary Perricone on the loss of her granddaughter. May she rest in peace.

We enjoyed our guests, Jewell Clark, and Frances Mamula of South Bend, Indiana. She is the sister of Mary Renfro, Rose Steinman and Jeanie Mason. Rose Steinman will leave Thursday with her daughter, Mary Hargis, and little Appa to visit their relatives on their husband's and father's side and, then they will go on to South Bend, Indiana where Rosie and Frances will celebrate their birthdays July 22nd.

Frank Tesar was our door prize winner. Annie Whitsill will donate the prize for our August meeting.

Dear Sir: Please print this poem in the Vestnik; about 20 years ago I cut this poem out of the Vestnik because it reminded me of my father Jim Sralla who was still alive. He died July 27, 1979 and please print this poem in his memory -- Jim Sralla, born May 23, 1901; died July 27, 1979.

MY DAD He wasn't great in the hall of fame; The whole wide world never knew his name -But he had friends -- My Dad! Dr. Henry R. Maresh Scholarship Established The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas will be awarding a $2,000 scholarship annually in the name of Dr. Henry R. Maresh, announced President Roger H. Kolar.

The scholarship, to be awarded to a student of Czech studies, is being established by Mrs. Thelma Burnett Maresh, widow of the late Dr. Maresh.

Mrs. Maresh's recent gift of $27,000 to CESAT will serve as the endowment which will fund the annual grant.

Dr. Maresh, who died in 1957, was a prominent Houston physician and an avid supporter of Czech ethnic activities and cultural preservation in Texas. In 1934, he co - authored with Estelle Hudson the book, Czech Pioneers of the Southwest, the first definitive look at Czech immigration in Texas. The book traces Czech settlement throughout the state from the early 1850s.

Dr. Maresh was born in 1890 in Burleson County near Caldwell to Mary Jerabek and Frank Maresh, a Czech immigrant. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin and The Medical Branch in Galveston. In Houston he served as president of Liberty Savings.

A Daughter of the Republic of Texas, Mrs. Maresh has served as state president general of that organization.

She is co - founder of the Houston Chapter of the Edna Gladney Auxiliary, past president of the Harris County Medical Women's Auxiliary, and past president of Women's Council of Christian Life Service. Mrs. Maresh recalls driving all over the state with her husband to gather information for Czech Pioneers. Her intent is to "continue the study of the culture of the Czech people whom Dr. Maresh so loved."

Dr. and Mrs. Maresh's four children all graduated from the University of Texas.

The first of the scholarships will be awarded in the fall of 1989. Applicants should be graduates or undergraduates involved in some area of Czech studies, either majoring in Czech language, or in other programs with emphasis on Czech subjects. They must be Texas residents or enrolled in a university in Texas. Results From District III YAD District III YAD was held in Ennis, Texas at SPJST Lodge 25 on Sunday, June 25, 1989.

We had 220 entries and wonderful talent and craft entries. I certainly am glad I did not have to judge. There were some difficult decisions made.

I want to congratulate all winners and I wish you luck in State YAD on August 26th and 27th.

The Royalty will be held at Seaton Lodge Hall on August 26th. Starting at 4 p.m. dinner and dance follows.

The Talent and Craft competition will be held in Temple, Texas on August 27th at the Mayborn Convention Center. Good luck to all!

Thanks to all who helped with YAD at District III. Special thanks to the judges, the youth leaders, and the Tabulating Committee, under the direction of District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik. I appreciate all the parents who helped in any way, and those who attended and supported our youth.

Letters From The Youth From State/District II King (1988-89) As the year comes to an end as being District H King; I want to say that it has been a real exciting and challenging year for me. I have gone to so many different places and met so many nice people throughout the year.

As I was thanking the people for all of their support at District II YAD, I was afraid that I would forget to mention some special people who were there with their support and I was right.

Out of all the people I thanked, I forgot to thank President Howard Leshikar, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek, Frankie Klinkovsky, Lodge 47 Assistant Youth Leader Judy Pechal and also the mother Lodge No. 47 of Seaton.

I want to again, thank everyone for always being there with all of the support given to me.

Camp will be coming up soon.

Dear Readers, Our President Kelli Kopecky called a Junior Youth Club meeting to order on July 11, 1989 at 7:30 p.m.

Our Treasurer C.J. Novak read the roll call and we had 18 members, 5 guests, 7 leaders and 5 adults attending the meeting. C.J. gave a report of those who did not pay their annual dues.

Youth Leader Jeri Ann Kopecky discussed old business of the Teens' Princess Ball on July 15 at 8:30 - 12:30 and camp July 20 - 23.

New business was a swim party at the Wet n' Wild at 5 p.m. at the Northwest Highway and LBJ in Garland.

Our president said our next meeting is scheduled for August 21st and asked everyone to adjourn the meeting to attend the Teen Annual Game Night which was about to start.

Sherill Ripple

Ripple Competes In Miss Texas USA Contest Miss Sherill Ripple competed as Miss Taylor at the 16th Annual Miss Texas USA pageant with 100 other contestants. The competition was held on June 26, 1989 in San Antonio, Texas.

Sherill is a member of Lodge No. 29, Taylor, and is a past member of the SPJST Youth Club. Sherill was May Fete Princess in 1982 and May Fete Queen in 1983. She has participated in many different duties at the Taylor May Fete and has also performed with the Folk Dancers at the Austin Aqua Fest in 1970.

Miss Ripple is a 1983 graduate of Taylor High School and a 1988 graduate of the Southwest Texas State University. Sherill graduated with a BS degree in Education.

She is the daughter of Henry and Marie Ann Ripple. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ripple, Sr., of Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. Albin E. Machu, Sr., of Granger. She is the great - granddaughter of Mrs. Frances Kovar of Taylor.

A society rosary was recited at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A parish rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 13 at Kubena Funeral Home.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois Gullette of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Patsy Pagel of Houston; two sons, George W. Bucek, Jr. of Yoakum and Laddie Bucek of Hallettsville; a sister, Irene Kocurek of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Mr. Bucek was elected to the Hallettsville City Council in 1963 and served as mayor pro - tern from 1968 - 1977 when he did not seek re election.

Born January 21, 1896 in Fayette County, Texas, Sister Mrkos was the daughter of John and Anna Husak.

She married Frank Mrkos in November, 1920 at West. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1969.

Sister Mrkos was a farmer, a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of the West Brethren Church, and a member of SPJST since October 21, 1927.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Willie Mrkos in 1985 and Daniel Mrkos in 1933.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Mrkos of West and Marvin Mrkos of Arlington; "three grandchildren; three step - grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four step - great grandchildren plus several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. in West Brethren Church, with Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Interment was in West Brethren Cemetery.

Aderhold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brother Cancilla was an Army veteran of World War II and a shoe repairman for 26 years. He married Ellen Holder on December 3, 1945 in Waco, Texas.

Survivors are his wife, Martha Dubcak of Red Ranger; two sons, Arnold "Buddy" Dubcak, Jr. of Virginia and Ronald Dubcak of Belen, New Mexico; a brother, Joe J. Dubcak of Red Ranger and three grandchildren.

who passed away on June 28, 1989 at a Caldwell hospital. He had attained the age of 35 years.

Brother Vychopen was born January 23, 1904 near the Providence community in Burleson County, Texas, the son of Martin Vychopen and Frances Urbanovsky Vychopen.

Brother Vychopen worked in construction work as a carpenter and brick mason. He also worked as a service station operator and was a farmer and rancher. He was a member and elder of the Caldwell Brethren Church. He helped build the Caldwell Brethren Church. He married Ella Frances Adamek on December 26, 1926 in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Vychopen of Caldwell; two sisters, Frances Hrozek of Bluff, Kansas and Milady Skrabanek of Caldwell, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Vychopen and Henry Vychopen and his parents.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Friday, June 30th from Caldwell Brethren Church with the Rev. Daniel Marek and Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was at New Tabor Cemetery.

Kubiak Resolution Names Caldwell Kolache Capitc: On Thursday, April 6, 1989 State Representative L.B. Kubiak reported that his House Concurrent Resolution Number 171 passed the House on the first step to officially designating the City of Caldwell as the "Kolache Capitol of Texas."

Representative Kubiak reported that his resolution was sent to the Senate for approval.

The designation of Kolache Capitol for Caldwell comes from the significance of the annual Kolache Festival held on the second Saturday of September. The festival draws from the deep heritage of the Czechoslovakian culture which prevades much of Burleson County.

Representative Kubiak's resolution speaks volumes on the importance of the festival as well as its many facets.

The resolution reads as follows: House Concurrent Resolution No. 171.

WHEREAS, The City of Caldwell is the site of the annual Kolache Festival, a daylong celebration of Czech heritage and culture; and WHEREAS, Held on the second Saturday of September, the festival takes its name from Kolache, a traditional Czech pastry containing meat, cheese, fruit, poppyseed or a combination of various fillings; and WHEREAS, Originally served as a wedding pastry, kolache has long been a favorite national dessert throughout Czechoslovakia; early Czech immigrants brought the art of baking these special confections to Texas when they settled in the Burleson County area; and WHEREAS, Today, bakers from around the state display their talents at the Kolache Bake Show, a highlight of Caldwell's yearly Kolache Festival; participating bakers may compete as professionals or non - professionals for the titles of Burleson County Champion and State Champion; and WHEREAS, In addition to the Kolache Bake Show, the festival offers demonstrations of such traditional Czechoslovakian arts as basket weaving, egg decorating, stenciling, wood carving and quilting, visitors may also sample a variety of delicious ethnic foods and enjoy singing and dancing to lively Czech polkas; and WHEREAS, Through their sponsorship of the annual Kolache Festival, the citizens of Caldwell continue to preserve and revitalize the area's rich Czech heritage; their exceptional efforts in this regard will enable many Texans to share and appreciate the enduring gifts of the Czechoslovakian culture; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 71st Legislature of the State of Texas hereby recognize Caldwell as the "Kolache Capitol of Texas" and commend its citizens on their significant accomplishments in promoting the heritage of their Czech ancestors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the City of Caldwell as the official certificate of this special designation.
