Box 85, West, Texas 76691. *** REMEMBER YOUR DISTRICT YAD!!! *** Pursuit of Happiness -- Happiness: the word itself arouses a certain feeling within the innermost part of the heart of each and every one of us. Who is not in pursuit of happiness? Who is not constantly angling for ways and means to attain that certain feeling of happiness, that, rightly so or not, will result in the happiness, as defined by each individual? Happiness -- how much grief and strife has been caused by the struggle to achieve it before it finally made its way to some one who gave all but his life for it?

Happiness is not measured in the same degree by all -- some are happy for the sheer job of being alive. Others find happiness in sacrificing their lives for the betterment of mankind. Still others find a quiet sort of happiness in the domicile of their immediate families. And others -- find happiness in making life miserable for those about them. And those who tolerate unhappiness are equally guilty for not changing their life and trying to achieve happiness or at least peace of mind. It was once said that two of the hardest things in life to do are: 1) To forget, and 2) Knowing what to forget.

How true! How many of us still really do harbor old resentments that only harm others, and truthfully, more so ourselves. Think about this!

Our forefathers who pioneered in this America we know today, were in pursuit of happiness -- not for themselves, as much as for those whom they left behind in their native land. It was with the main objective that they find means of a livelihood in a strange land, which would afford them an opportunity to sustain their loved ones at home.

This pursuit of happiness is what brought about the discovery of America -- it brought about its growth and a melting pot of people and nations -- whose primary aim was -- to achieve happiness.

Their definition of happiness was to provide at least a temporary cushion for their loved ones, and their concern of theirs has grown and been nurtured within our great fraternal Society.

What greater happiness can we enjoy, than in the knowledge that we have provided for those who will follow our life path? True, we strive to work to make a better living wage, but this more often than not, leads not to greater provisions in case of our demise, but rather to further or expand our mode of living to the extent which leaves the survivors in financial stress in case of the death of the wage earner.

A much surer way to save and provide for our loved ones is by

making a plan and investing part of our earnings in the form of insurance premiums most suitable for the family's circumstances. Thus, a set amount is being paid monthly on a life policy, which carries after the allotted time dividends and cash reserve, and in the event of death the full face value of the certificate is paid to the beneficiaries.

To be a good provider for your family -- you must be insurance conscious. This is being provided not only in our home life -- our fraternal government itself advocates insurance of all sorts against unemployment, disability, old age, etc.

If you are already a member of the SPJST, check over your life insurance and see if you are adequately insured.

If not, now is the time to make the adjustment by taking out another certificate or increasing your present one, also, if your wife or child are not insured -- do not overlook the serious effect their passing would have on your budget, if you do not carry a life insurance certificate on them. *** How Social Security applies to marriage. First of all, it's important to remember that, although Social Security is designed to provide individual protection for workers when they retire, or if they become disabled, the real benefit comes in its role as a family income protection plan. When a worker starts receiving retirement or disability benefits, or dies, benefits may be payable to a spouse and minor children, up to a family maximum.

However, a person cannot get a benefit as a spouse on a worker's record and as a worker on her or his own work; generally, he or she receives the higher of the two. Also, if annual earnings exceed the Social Security annual earnings' limits, the benefit may be reduced or eliminated.

Social Security family protection is especially important for children. If either parent retires, becomes disabled or dies, a child may become eligible for benefits. This is true regardless of the earnings of the surviving parent.

Ordinarily, a widow or widower may find her or his Social Security benefit reduced or eliminated when re married, but benefits may continue without reduction for a widow or widower who re - marries at age 60 or later, or a disabled widow who re marries after 50.

A divorced spouse is entitled to the same benefits as a wife or widow if the marriage lasted 10 years or more immediately prior to the divorce of the worker. This is true even if the worker has re - married, however, the spouse may lose those rights if she or he re marries.

It should also be noted that a divorced spouse may receive retirement benefits at age 62 on a worker's record even if the worker is not actually receiving benefits. The worker must be eligible for benefits and the spouse must have been divorced from the worker for at least two years.

People should also be aware of the public pension offset if they get a pension based on work in public employment not covered by Social Security and expect to get a Social Security benefit as a wife or widow of a worker covered by Social Security.

The Social Security benefit may be reduced. There are a number of exceptions to this rule, and interested persons should call the Social Security office at 800 - 234 - 5772 for more information. Persons should ask for the fact sheet, "Government Pension Offset."

From The President's Office SPJST To Sponsor Fund Raising Projects For The Renovation Of The Battleship Texas And Czech Chair March - September 1989 Dear Officers and Members: The Supreme Lodge approved the proposal to help raise funds to restore and renovate the Battleship "Texas" and also at the same time to raise donations for the Czech Chair. Both projects are tax - deductible contributions.

"To establish a major new Czech Studies Program in our State, THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS is conducting a drive to fund an Endowed Educational Chair at a major Texas University. The establishment of the chair will insure that a Czech teacher will always be available and that Czech language will always be taught."* "Since the early years of this century, the Czech youth of this state have had the opportunity to study the language and culture of their forebearers at state universities. Czech classes have served to bring generations together and foster a love and understanding of our immigrant ancestors and their values."* Battleship "Texas" is now a memorial ship owned by Texas and was called the "Flagship." Battleship "Texas" played a very important part in World War II and was used in many battles. *Reference -- Support the Czech Chair Brochure.

Battleship "Texas" has 150,000 visitors each year, but now is in critical need of major repair and must be towed into the shipyards for repair.

The complete cost of restoring the battleship is estimated to cost 13.4 million and all Texans are asked for their help in raising these funds.

Battleship "Texas" helped save our country and now we need to save her, won't you help?

We are hoping to reach our goals for

these projects by September 1, 1989.

We realize that while some lodges may have funds available, others may not, but they may want to solicit contributions from members or sponsor an activity to raise funds. In any case, we certainly hope that the effort you make in support of these projects will be richly rewarded in the benefits of fraternal "involvement."

Your lodge's goal amount is ten cents per member. The amount may be more or less. Each lodge that meets their goal(s) will have their lodge name in the Vestnik and what project(s) they supported. Individual contributors will also be recognized in the Vestnik.

The thermometer of progress will be in the Vestnik. Lodge donations and individual donations are encouraged.

Donation checks should be made to SPJST and mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; Attention: Office of the President. After all contributions are collected one check will be distributed from the Supreme Lodge to each project. Therefore, at this time we are soliciting you and your lodge's help with these important projects.

We are asking each lodge to donate a minimum of 10 cents per member to at least one of the worthwhile projects.

If it is possible, please support both projects.

The Supreme Lodge will match each lodge's donation up to the amount of $2,500 for each project. You can be sure that we at the Supreme Lodge greatly appreciate your help.

SPJST can meet its goals only if we act on these fraternal commitments before September 1, 1989.

Ign10,iirt Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, July 9, 1989 at Mr. Gatti's. Vice President Gaye Galetka opened the meeting followed by the pledge to the flag led by Flag Bearer Janell Chudej.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our deceased member, George Bucek by Gaynell Chudej.

Minutes to the previous meeting were read by Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy. They were approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka.

President Annie Vahalik then arrived and presided over the meeting.

Family Day was then discussed, plans made and committees named. It will be held Sunday, August 20th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

A catered fried chicken dinner with German potatoes, green beans, corn, peaches and bread will be served at noon. Ladies of the lodge are asked to donate desserts such as cakes, pies or kolaches. The meal will be the same price as last year at $2.50 - adult and $1.50 - youth (6 years to 12 years).

Following the meal, there will be recognition of the 50 - year members and presentation of their 50 - year pins. Introduction of guests and remarks. The officers of the Supreme Lodge are invited to attend. There will be games entertainment and anyone wishing to donate an item is welcomed with price range from $1.50 to $2 with proceeds going to the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas. The youth club will have a drawing and door prizes will be given as usual. Members and their families are invited to attend and spend an enjoyable day.

It was decided to have our regular meeting on the second Sunday being August 13th at Mr. Gatti's at 2 p.m.

July, August and September birthdays will be honored. The lodge will furnish the refreshments and pizza. The meeting adjourned. Refreshments were served. Door prize winner was Vicky Zak. Our next meeting will be Sunday, August 13th at Mr. Gatti's at 2 p.m.

Family Day will be the following Sunday, August 20th.

No. 29, Taylor Championship Tarok Tournament

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor will have a Tarok Tournament on September 16, 1989. The same rules and play format as was used at the State SPJST Tarok Tournament will be used. We especially want to invite SPJST members but the tournament is open to the public, so bring your friends.

Registration fee is $10 if you register

by September 1, 1989. We will limit registration to the first 100 players. We will accept late registrations only if we

need more players to reach the 100.

Late registration will cost $15.

Your registration fee will be used for the following: 1st prize -- $2 of each registration 2nd prize -- $1 of each registration 3rd prize -- $.50 of each registration 4th prize -- $.25 of each registration 5th prize -- $.25 of each registration (highest round score) Estimated expense $1 for morning break and $1 for the afternoon break, $3 for lunch, and $1 to cover mailing rules and directions to those who register.

We will begin sign - in in the morning of the tournament at 8:30 a.m.; at around 9:15, we will have drawing of numbers to determine players at each table and, hopefully, start the first round at 9:30 a.m., and will play 5 rounds, each round consisting of 12 hands. At this point, we will cut down to the top 32 players, play one round, cut to the top 16 players, play one round, cut to the top 8 players, play one round, cut to the top 4 players, play one round and declare the winners.

The Summer Heat At Lodge No. 47, Seaton

Beat

On Friday, July 21, Seaton (Star Hall) Lodge No. 47 will be having an ice cream social in connection with its regular monthly family night. The ice cream social will get underway at 8:30 p.m. after hamburger sales have been completed. We are asking members to bring a half of gallon or more of their favorite store - bought or homemade ice cream. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. when hamburgers, French fries and drinks will be sold. We cordially invite you all to join us for an evening of fun and cool refreshments.

No. 47, Seaton Meeting Held Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The regular lodge meeting was called to order by Vice President Tim Reese, in the absence of President George Pavelka, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 1989.

Flag Bearers Gary Skrabanek and James Kortis brought in the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for Sister Phyllis Billeck and Brother Arnold Dubcak, Sr. May we honor their memories forever and deep sympathy to the survivors. They shall be missed by all of us.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Johnny Marek, Gertrude Kahlig, Freddie Schroeder and Joe Macek. We valued your visit and make plans to come, again, soon.

The sick list included Sister Georgie Kotrla and Brothers Bill Billeck, Leslie Mesecke, Alfred Klusacek and Johnnie Ondrasek. We learned of Sisters Binnie Orsag, Vlasta Motl and Stephanie Mikeska being hospitalized, also. Sister Motl fell and broke her hip

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, July 19, 1989 the Sunday morning of our meeting and I learned yesterday that Sister Thelma Bartosh had surgery. I hope each of you improve everyday and that good health will return to you, soon.

Brother Calvin Skrabanek was asked to sat in as vice president.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers (President Pavelka absent), trustees and sales representatives. She read the minutes of the June 9th meeting and they were approved as read.

Correspondence included a thank you from Sister Phyllis Billeck's family for the flowers and a letter advising of the increase of water bill from $15 to $16 for the minimum from the East Bell Water Supply Corporation.

Brother Reese informed us that the family social on Friday, July 21st will be hamburgers and French fries from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Then we will have ice cream with everyone bringing either a freezer full of homemade ice cream or your favorite store bought ice cream. This is a send - off for the youth and chaperones going to camp on July 23rd. The Volleyball Tournament is set for November 4th and there will be an A or B Team from each lodge. The Tarok Tournament at Lodge 29, Taylor on September 16th is being kept in mind by players. The fraternal log is being kept by Tim Reese so advise him when you do some service for which the lodge may get credit.

The officers' reports were good and so were the chairpersons' reports.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky gave her report; 32 members and 7 adults.

She invited everyone to the YAD held July 9th at Holland SPJST Lodge No. 80. The youth and parents had just returned from a two - day trip to the beach and Sea Wolfe Park in Galveston and Astroworld and Waterworld in Houston. They were all tired, but all were glad they had gone.

Under old business was the discussion of the donation to the Battleship Texas and the Czech Chair from the proceeds from the picnic.

Brother F.E. Hejl, Jr. stated that I had the information wrong in the Vestnik about two months ago. He said that the U.S.S. Texas led the other ships to Europe but that the 315th Station Hospital ship that he was on, had developed a hole in the side after an Atlantic storm and had to go back to a port in Nova Scotia. They were then shipped to the original debarkation port and went by another ship across the Atlantic and went all alone and not accompanied by U.S.S. Texas as I had in my report. I hope I have it right this time. Sorry for the wrong information.

New business included the election to hold a picnic on the first Sunday in June, again.

Then SL Vice President Bernie Gebala was introduced and he, in turn, called the sales representatives and Brother Tim Reese escorted the sisters and Sister Claudette Reese escorted the brothers to a table in front. Those present and their tenure were: Louis Kohutek (1 year), Wallace Jez (3 years), Daniel Hejl (4 years), Dolores Skrabanek (7 years), Emily Stutevilie (12 years), Dorothy Pechal (12 years), Vallie Zavodny (17 years), Alice Banning (19 years), Willie E. Kohutek (20 years), Dan Balusek (21 years), Ruby L. Bolton (26 years), Frank Klinkovsky (28 years) and Emil J. Hejl (50 years). Evelyn Heese (6 years) and Anton Motl (34 years) were not present. He stated that the 15 active sales representatives have a total of 260

years of devotion to the SPJST, averaging 17.37 years each. Brother Hejl was presented a plaque by the lodge and Brother Gebala presented him with a beautiful pen. Brother Hejl is retiring from the selling of insurance, but he will be furnishing leads and remain active in lodge activities. Congratulations and thanks for selling insurance for 50 years for a total of 338 members, most of them in Lodge 47. Thanks, also to Judy Pechal for the beautiful cake for the sales representatives and Brother Hejl..

Birthdays in July will be observed by Willie E. Kohutek, Vallie Zavodny, Daniel Hejl, Jerome Orsag, Elmer Skrabanek, Evelyn Wells, Della Mares, Jimmie and Lonnie Schroeder.

Wedding anniversaries will be celebrated by Jerry and Annie Chupik (60 years, July 24); Louis and Mary Tepera (52 years), Rickie and Janell Novosad (19 years), Lee and Ruth Hanusch (19 years). All of you have a very "special day" and many, many more.

Dear Members and Guests: Our regular monthly meeting has been attended by all officers and trustees, except Don McKinney, who has a night shift job in Trinity so he was not able to be present. Vice President Jerry Michka took over the lead and did a fine job. The Pledge of Allegiance was then led by Brother Jerry Michka.

All reports were approved.

I'm sorry to say that the report showing listing of events taking place at our Lodge 74 showing that dances taking place on the first and third Saturday have not been taking place for a long time because Selena Cryer couldn't get the bands for the price our lodge could afford. It is our lodge's desire to have dances every Saturday night, but if the members and guests don't attend and support it, it isn't the fault of the few who are trying their best to keep our lodge open.

So from now on, I will let you know in plenty of time in my next report what date and the name of band which will entertain our dancing fans.

Right now, I am glad to report we will have Country High playing at Lodge 74 on July 22; those of you reading this report, please let everybody know about it. We need to have around 200 members and guests to attend those events in order to have dances more often.

We have games every Thursday night at 7 p.m. We need more people to come to the games so the amounts can be increased so that you can win bigger prizes.

Lodge No. 88, Houston I have been writing letters to the Vestnik for 18 months, and have had two complaints so far. Don't you think that speaks pretty well for me? I do.

Anyway, the complaints were minor, such as I didn't put his or her name in for the work that he or she have done, etc.

Let me tell you, I only put names down that were given to me. It would be quite a task for me to be at every function and write down these names of people who work. If you want me to mention your name, you better give it to me, but my Daddy always told us, "Actions speak louder than words."

So if I offended anyone I apologize and hope you'll forgive me.

On July 1, 1989 Tom and Lydia Marsh asked Arnold Cmajdalka and myself to assist them with a dance at Lodge 88. It turned out to be most enjoyable evening with a fine orchestra, Eddie Ray and The Polka Dots, also a fair crowd. Tom and Lydia had just returned from a 2 week trip, which was a trip to visit with Carmen and Rick Eiserman, Lydia's daughter and husband, who are stationed at the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.

Carmen and Rick introduced them to the area with a trip through the Amish country, also visiting an Amish homestead in Lancaster County with a briefing on their lifestyle; an antique shopping tour in the Gettysburg Harrisburg area; a thoroughly conducted tour of the Battlefield at Gettysburg by Rick, a history professor at the War College, and so well versed and knowledgable of the Civil War; and a tour of Hershey, Pennsylvania seeing how Hershey chocolates are made. Of course, a stopover was made at Little Rock, Arkansas, visitig with Tom's family, and doing construction work on the property there. On the way back, they stopped at Nacogdoches visiting with Myrtle Loveless and family.

Tom and Lydia are very active members at our Lodge 88, a sales representative, and Tom does a lot of work with the Men's Club and also both are on the Entertainment Committee.

The following article was given to me by Brother John Kosut.

The Class of 1939 -- Lamar High School, Houston, Texas -- had its 50th anniversary reunion on May 12, 1989, and I, with 129 colleagues, attended.

The year of 1939 was full of memorable events for me. I attended the premiere showing of "Gone With The Wind" at the Loew's State Theater, the premiere of "The Wizard Of Oz," also at the Loew's, bought the first "Batman" comic books, attended the 50th anniversary of KJT at Hostyn, Texas on July 4th setting off dynamite charges in a cotton field, and my dad was in Vsetin, Moravia when Hitler took over Bohemia and Moravia.

Lamar High was built in 1937 and I transferred from San Jacinto High to Lamar because it was closer to home.

At that time, it was way out in the wilderness of Westheimer by River Oaks and Westheimer was a 2 - way gravel road. They started paving it the day school opened in 1937 -- real good planning!

The reunion was held at the Houston Country Club. The hall was decorated with scarlet and royal balloons (our colors) and with blown up sized pages of the graduates from

our Annual -- The Orenda, Volume II. Orenda is an Indian word for list of roster, and this was the second graduating class from Lamar.

Lamar was named for Mirabeau B. Lamar -- Texas hero and Indian fighter who fought at San Jacinto, was the second president of Texas and is called the "Father of Texas Education." Our school paper is called the Lancer; Lamar fought with a lance at San Jacinto. We are known as The Redskins but are sometimes called "Teasippers."

The graduating class of 1939 had 400 grads -- the war and time has reduced us to 340 - and 130 graduates came to the reunion.

The program was very flexible -mingling and trying to recognize old schoolmates. Each of us had our small annual picture on our name tag, so the evening was spent trying to focus our bi - focals on these pictures. But after a while, all these old people began to become recognizable. The men had all become quite a bit heavier and the women all looked remarkably well.

Refreshments and drinks were plentiful -- attendants kept the drinks flowing and there were long tables with many varieties of finger food.

After a while, the 8 - piece orchestra began playing and the evening was complete -- music from the 40s and old friends. The evening was complete until I turned to dance with my Mary and she was not there. She wasn't able to come with me, she was ill but insisted I go.

I left when they were playing "Moonlight Cocktail" -- full of nostalgia and without my dancing partner.

Comment: Mary and Johnnie are active members and always willing to help wherever needed. Mary is also a very capable reporter on Benevolence.

On July 10, Lodge 88 had their monthly meeting, with a good attendance. Our Secretary Mildred Holeman will send the minutes later.

We were informed that Ben Meyer, Jr., brother of Sister Martha Zatopek, had died. He was born in Needville, Texas and died on June 18, 1989 at the age of 52. We sympathize with the family.

Lodge No. 92., Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting on July 9 was a short one because no one had very much to discuss, however, there was a discussion about the September Czech Heritage Day that will be held at our lodge, 3316 Roberts Cut - Off Road.

There will also be kolache contest, so ladies and even some men get your aprons and mix the dough and hope for the best because you may be a winner and never think you could be a good baker. (One of our members said that he doesn't know anything about baking them, but he is good at eating them; that is something we all like to do.) It's wonderful that, we, Czechs have a pastry that is well - known and enjoyed so much. Then, I suppose there will be some for sale during the Czech Heritage Day. This will start at 11 a.m. and the cost will be $6 for both bands and until the end of the dance about 12:30 a.m. This will be held September 16, 1989. Two bands will be playing and something will be going on all during the day, so it will be a day of enjoyment for all except the workers.

They will be doing it for the good of our lodge and to keep the Czech tradition. The meal will cost $5 for adults and $2.50 for youth under 16. I am sure that after the past meeting, the trustees will be busy because the bids and specifications are ready for the new roof. Contractors will have to bid on this type of roofing material; it is not what you call a mop on with gravel. We hope this type of roof will last much longer. All of us hope that the completion will be done before our September date of the celebration.

Some members weren't present at the meeting because they went to Las Vegas to try to get rich. Helen Kubala and Victoria Murphy hope to come back as winners, but I'm sure we will hear all sorts of excuses, but anyway that is suppose to be for entertainment only. Mary Ann and Kenneth, and Alene Kercho were host and hostesses after the meeting. I don't know whether it's called dinner or "svacina," but it's always good. It consisted of cold cuts and also salads with chips.

We were happy to see some of our youth club members who went to District III YAD and came out as winners in some things. Holly and Melissa Hubenak entered some beautiful paintings. They were framed and I can say that they looked like a professional artist had painted them.

They placed first in some of their entries. They had an airplane made from sewing spools and other parts and it was a very nice piece of work. It was a winner in that age group. In the royalty contest, Holly Hubenak was first runner - up queen and Melissa placed first runner - up duchess. We are proud of these two fine ladies and hope more youth members start getting interested in these contests.

Parents should encourage their grandchildren and friends of theirs to get active in the youth program.

Also good news that Brandy Kubala won in the weight category in short horn steers, again. I'm sure that Brandy spends lots of time grooming the calves. Things like that are what makes our world a wonderful place.

The young people need to do things of interest in order to keep ahead of the foreign countries.

Martha Durham sent birthday cards to members over age 65. These members are always glad to receive them. When there is some one who has a birthday in the month of our meeting, "Happy Birthday" is sung but this time was sad because no birthday was celebrated. Next month, we hope some one will have one so we can keep our vocal cords in shape.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jason Whatley, parents of a baby boy.

Grandparents are Joyce and Jerry Whatley and great - grandmother is Dona Hubenak.

Elmer Howard and Joy Paprskar are still on, the sick list, but we hope they will be up and about, again, soon.

Brother Adolph Farek passed away July 10, 1989. He has a nice family who will surely miss him very much.

Brother Farek was in a nursing home, but was able to go to his son's home for weekends. (As an eucharistic server in church, I go visit the ones in the rest homes and give them communion; this past July 5, I gave Brother Farek communion and had a nice talk.with him. He was getting weak , so a week later, I was a pallbearer for him. We extend sympathy to his family and may all departed members rest in peace.)

We wish Mr. and Mrs. Rome Milan, who were married July 1, 1989, many happy years of married life together.

Rome is a member of Lodge No. 154 and son of Brother Jerry and Henrietta Milan. The bride is from Canada and is a very pleasant lady. They really had a beautiful wedding and the food and cakes were just out of this world. The wedding was attended by many of the Milan family, also several from Canada and out - of - town were present. We had a very nice time and enjoyed being present. This was the first time for me and others, I'm sure, to see the groom in a formal tux make a few back flips; about ten others also did back flips. Several of our SPJST Headquarters officers were present at the wedding with their wives. We enjoyed the evening visiting with them.

I thank Brother Sefcik for putting the pictures of the Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92 in the last issue. The ladies were glad to see themselves in the Vestnik.

I hope the weather is settled because there were more storms and Dallas had a hard blow; many trees were broken and many people were without electricity, again.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan.

He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and asked the members to remain standing for a moment of silent tribute to our deceased brothers, Congressman Wingate Lucas, Sr., Anton "Dick" Sukup, James Otis Burdick and Edwin P. Petrash. Our heartfelt sympathy to their families and may they rest in peace.

Secretary Mary Renfro read the minutes and they were approved as read and the treasurer's report was by Sister Mary Hale. Sister Pavey reported on all cards sent.

Expression of thanks was read from the families of Sam Hunter and Lillian Skrasek.

Brother Milan gave a report on the TOCA meeting he attended June 10 in Temple, and Brother Frank and Sister Merel Kovar also attended.

Brother Kovar said he received a call from Tarrant County Junior College if anyone was interested in a beginners Czech class. If you would like more information, you may contact Brother Kovar at (817) 834 - 2636. He also stated he runs into many Slavic people who don't know that there is a place in Fort Worth where they can meet

people of the Slavic nationality.

Sister Rose Steinman read correspondence from our SL President Brother Howard Leshikar that the State Volleyball Tournament was approved for Saturday, November 4th, and the FAC Czech Fest October 1st at Bell County Expo Center, Belton, Texas.

Brother Frank and Sister Merel Kovar were surprised when they went to see "My One and Only" at the Casa Manana to see Brother B.J. Cleveland in the cast and to see how talented he is.

Brother Jerry thanked all who helped to make their son, Brother Rome and Mila's wedding such a great occasion. They felt honored that SL President Howard Leshikar, Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, District III Director Sid Pokladnik and their wives were in our midst. Sister Mary Renfro outdid herself again, her first attempt to roast duck (256 pounds) and got so many compliments.

We all extend our congratulations to Rome and Mila; they were wed in a beautiful ceremony at the Botanic Garden, followed by a dinner and dance with Harold Strand at our hall.

Brother Rome is the son of Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan and Mila is the daughter of Vlasta and Jan Waldauf of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The rehearsal dinner Friday night at the Fort Worth Club was hosted by the groom's parents. They had many guests from Canada, Dallas, Austin, Maryland, New York City, Waco, Illinois, South Bend, Indiana and Lynchburg, Virginia. May they have a long and happy life together.

Brother Carl and Helen Johnson had a wonderful week in Colorado and then Helen visited her family in Amarillo. Sisters Melissa and Nikki Johnson enjoyed a nice visit with their relatives here from Minnesota. Sister Sherri Mason left for Honolulu yesterday and then on to New Zealand.

We hope she arrives safely.

Brother Donald Steinman, Jr. was our door prize winner, he was not present.

We extend our congratulations to Bruce and Sister Vera Richards of Seattle, Washington on the arrival of their daughter, Christina Frantiska.

Sister Frances Mamula came in for the wedding from South Bend, Indiana and is still enjoying a nice visit with all the Milan family and left Tuesday. Her daughter Sister Melissa had to get back to work, but enjoyed her short stay.

We are happy to report all our lodge members and Sokol gymnasts arrived home safely from the Sokol Slet in Omaha. We extend our congratulations to Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman, the Sokol choreographer, who has been winning first place since 1976. Congratulations to all the gymnasts.

Our meeting adjourned to calories and fellowship. Our next meeting is Sunday, August 13th at 3 p.m.

I plan on going to St. Louis on August 4th and return the 19th or 20th. So until --- keep smiling.

Lodge No. 187, Round Rock Holds 9th Annual May Fete Round Rock Lodge No. 187 held its 9th Annual May Fete on Sunday, May 21st. Activities began at 3 p.m. with the pledge to the flag. The flag bearers were Ronny Leschber and Troy Oman.

Youth Club Leader Sharon Holman of Lodge 187 welcomed everyone to the May Fete and also introduced special guests, Lodge 187 Board Chairman Arnold Leschber, State Youth Director Claudette Reese, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek, District II Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky, State and District II King Daryl Kortis, member of Lodge Seaton No. 47 and Master of Ceremonies for the evening. The 1985 May Fete Queen Paula Almquist was also recognized.

Defensive Driving Course

It isn't too soon to register for the AARP Defensive Driving Course to be conducted at SPJST Lodge No. 88 Thursday and Friday, August 10th and 11th.

Both dates start at 9 a.m. and close at 1 p.m.

Attendance at both classes is required to complete the eight - hour course, and the certificate issued is good for a three - year period for reduction in your automobile insurance.

Reunions Marak Family Reunion Held June 24th The Marak Parish Hall of Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Marak, Texas, northwest of Cameron, was the setting of the fourth Mathew Marak (of Bomarton) family reunion on Saturday, June 24, 1989, with 130 family members attending.

Registration began at 9:30 a.m., followed with a barbecue and sausage meal at 12:30 p.m.

Chairman Raymond J. Peters of Keller, Texas conducted the meeting following dinner. Family members of the nine children of Mathew Marak are: Mollie, John, Roman, Emil, August, Mathew II, Mary, Sophia and Hattie, attending were introduced.

Special recognition was given to the two surviving daughters, Hattie Marak Pavlicek and Mary Marak Macha attending from Seymour. Visiting, sharing of interesting family stories and pictures followed the meeting.

Family members were treated to a dance with music by the Lone Star Czechs of Ennis, following the 6 p.m. meal.

From The District Youth Counselor District II Camp Scheduled Dear District II Campers, Now, that we have a successfulYAD behind us, we are all looking forward to the fun and excitementwe all have at Camp Val Verde.

Juniors (6 - 12) should arrive at camp on Sunday, July 23rd at 3 p.m.

Junior camp will continue through Wednesday, July 26th with check out time at 2 p.m.

Teen campers (13 - 16) should arrive at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26th.

Teen camp will continue on until Saturday, July 29th at 2 p.m.

Our schedule of activities will be similar to the past few years. We hope to add more swimming and also archery will be held this year. Other activities include horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, indoor and outdoor games, volleyball, tee ball, parties, dancing, singing, crafts and a penny carnival for the juniors (junicrs bring plenty of pennies).

Each youth club will be responsible for the flag ceremonies, which should include a patriotic song or poem in addition to the pledge.Table grace will also be included after the flag ceremony.

Items To Bring To Camp 1) Sheets; pillows, light cover 2) Towels, wash cloths 3) Toilet articles, soap grooming needs, etc.

4) Swim suit, large towel, suntan lotion 5) Change of clothes for each day 6) Long pants and socks (a must if you plan to ride horseback) 7) Comfortable shoes 8) Large garbage bag for dirty clothes 9) Cap or hat (for hiking) lO)Moneyfor afternoon soft drinks (50 cents per drink); optional -­ flashlight, bug repellent, cameras, fans with extension cords, dancing music..

Parents PLEASE be sure each item for the juniors is marked. This will be a great help to' our chaperones.

This year at junior camp we are expecting 15 LITs. What a great help this will be to us leaders. These LITs were fantastic at the retreat and learned many years, and ideas. They are looking forward to sharing these experiences with each of you. Teens, we as leaders, have a lot planned for you. We have several new leaders attending this year so...

Directions to Camp Val Verde: Highway 36 West past Temple, about 6 miles, take Highway 317 to the right toward Moody. Go through Moody on to McGregor, at the second red light turn right on to Highway 84 East toward Waco. Go about 8 miles to Val Verde Exit to the left. Followthe road all the way to the "T." Take the second road to the left on to Camp Val Verde grounds. Stop at the dining hall for directions.

I hope all of you who have sent your camp applications will be there. We have a great time planned for you.

From The Youth Leaders New Tabor Lodge 17 Recognizes Active Youth Members Dear Readers, The New Tabor Youth Club got off to a very busy start for the 1989 - 90 youth year by holding their annual banquet. This event was held on June 4, 1989at the lodge hall. We had great participation from all the families of our youth club members. Also attending were several lodge officers and our District I Director Andrew Vavra.

Perfect attendance awards went to Holly Suehs, Mindy Suehs, Mica Petty, Marshall Petty, Cheryl Cannon, Kristen Cannon, Lana Urbanovsky, Dana Urbanovsky, Chantel Sebesta, Crystal Sebesta, Cheryl Sebesta, Cindy Sebesta and Chris Story. Each of these youth club members received a trophy for their dedication to the club.

Special attendance awards were given to Mabrey Petty and Vicki Morehead for attending all meetings since they became eligible. Both of these members turned six during the 1988 - 89 youth year.

Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek presented certificates to those youth members who had participated in the T - shirt design contest. Those receiving these certificates were Mica, Marshall and Mabrey Petty, Kristen and Cheryl Cannon, Vince and Vicki Morehead, Cody and Casey Freeland, Heather Zwernemann and Chris Story. These certificates were awarded by the Supreme Lodge in recognition of the youth members' efforts in participating in the contest.

Our new youth club officers were then installed by Director Andrew Vavra. The new officers of our youth club are: President -- Holly Suehs 1st Vice President -Lana Urbanovsky 2nd Vice President -- Chris Beasley Secretary -- Cody Freeland Treasurer -- Chantel Sebesta Reporter -- Crystal Sebesta Flag Bearer -- Tim Beasley Guide -- Dana Urbanovsky June proved to be busy, but July and August will be just as busy. The members are practicing for YAD, getting their crafts together, and going to camp. A swimming party is planned for August 7, 1989 as a reward for all the hard work they have done in the past few months. This just so happens to be the day after District I YAD. I think all the youth club members, their parents, and myself will need a day of relaxation when YAD is finally over.

Dear Members, Many thanks for a wonderfully, tiring trip at NASA, the afternoon night at the coast in Galveston and Astroworld - Waterworld in Houston on Saturday.

Everyone seemed to have a fantastic time in spite of the pranks played i.e., the warning of an incoming hurricane and the limbo done surprisingly well by a few ladies while touring the submarine at Sea Wolfe Park! If they only knew.

A special thanks to Ricky Novosad for saving our boys from being washed out to sea; thanks also to Tim and Claudette Reese for being our "winners" and Migel our bus driver for a safe trip. Patsy's face as the bus was finally leaving Houston: "Are we leaving anyone?" or "Did those girls stash a lifeguard on the bus?," making a quick, but very quiet stop in Brenham to eat Blue Bell Ice Cream, being awakened by the "THUND" of a bird trying to hitch a ride on the bus windshield, plus everyone's own experiences, of course.

By the way, does anyone want to claim one brown sock left over after drying clothes?

District V Youth Take Educational Trip Dear Vestnik Readers, Since October, 1988 youth clubs of District V have worked hard to raise money for our "San Antonio" trip. By reading your Vestnik, I am sure you have, occasionally, come across a letter written by one of our youth club members updating you on our progress. Through bake sales, garage sales and other activities, we had raised over $2600; when June 16 - 18, 1989 finally came, we were ready!

Well, the real excitement began at 9 a.m. Friday, June 16 when we started to load the bus. Everyone could tell we were preparing for a great weekend in San Antonio. At about 9:30 a.m., we boarded our bus and got on our way.

Because we were all excited, the trip seemed to last forever. When we finally arrived in San Antonio, we stopped and ate lunch at "The Red Barn" Restaurant. Then, we headed to Lackland Air Force Base, where we stayed during our trip. Once everyone had a few minutes to pick out a bed and get unpacked, we went to the main building and ate dinner. Afterwards, we went to the riverwalk and took a "river taxi" while we got to see a few of the interesting sites along the river.

Afterwards, we divided into small groups and went sightseeing. Most groups enjoyed the chance to grab a few souvenirs. At 9 p.m., we returned to the bus and journeyed back to the Air Force Base to rest after a full first day.

The second day was just as, or even, fun. Everyone woke up bright and early at 7 a.m. to eat breakfast at the base. Everyone seemed ready to spend the day at Sea World, which offered many interesting shows. "Shamu" introduced the famous Shamu, as well as Namu, Kandu and Baby Shamu.

"Spooky Kooky Castle" showed sea lions, otters and walruses. "Beach Blanket Ski Party" allowed the audience to see ski stunts performed on a giant 12 - acre lake. "Wheels" was a futuristic fairy tale performed by skateboarders, BMX bikers, and rollerskaters. "New Friends" featured dolphins and whales. Other attractions included a huge U.S. map, a giant chess set, and a "garden of flags."

After we left Sea World, we went to the Farmers Market in downtown San Antonio and ate dinner at "Mi Tierra." Then, we returned to the base and rested up for our final day of our trip.

Sunday was just as busy as the other two days. After breakfast, we went to see the Lackland Air Force Base Museum. Then, we got to walk around and see a large field full of different kinds of airplanes. It was very interesting. Then, since there was still plenty of time to spare before lunch, we found a Burger King on the base and our district treated everyone to a soft drink. Because it was Father's Day, all of the kids sang "Happy Father's Day" to all the fathers who were there. Right before lunch, we got in our bus and drove around the base.

It was very surprising to most of us to see that the base looked just like a small town. There were schools, restaurants and even a department store center. After lunch, we went to have a quick look inside the Alamo.

Then, we went to the University of Texas' Institute of Texan Culture Museum. There, we saw many interesting exhibits on different cultures found in Texas, including Czechoslovakian. It even had a section on the SPJST. After spending about an hour there, we headed back home to Houston. We stopped in Schulenburg to eat lunch at "Frank's Restaurant.

As you can tell, the youth of District V had an exciting weekend in San Antonio. There was always something fun to do, and never a dull moment.

Already, we at District V, are thinking of a bigger and better trip for next year. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this trip so great -that includes the parents and youth who worked hard at car washes, bake sales, garage sales, every Thursday night at games, and our incredible DYC Marie Stayton who encouraged us to work as hard as we did; also, appreciation goes to all the chaperones and everyone who attended.

See you all at District YAD on July 23rd at camp from July 29 - August 1!

84 Dallas Junior Youth Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The Junior Youth Club meeting was held on June 19, 1989 at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge. The new officers are President Kelli Kopecky, Vice President Chris Coker, Secretary Meribeth Novak, Treasurer C.J. Novak. Amy Pennartz and Colette Kenney -- Refreshment Committee, Adam Farazil and Kelly Sims -Sunshine Committee, Neal Andreason and J.J. Novak -- Photographers, Nathan Kopecky and Sarah Pennartz — Flag Bearers.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Nathan Kopecky. There were 15 members present, 6 leaders and one adult.

C.J. Novak reminded everyone of their annual dues. The following members paid dues: Collette and Michael Kenney, C.J. and J.J., Meribeth Novak and Jamie Lyn Novak, Amy and Sarah Pennartz, Kelly and Rusty Sims, Aaron, Kelli and Nathan Kopecky, Frankie and Lauren Petr. We collected $15.

In our meeting, we discussed Beseda practices, group practices and individual practices for Youth Achievement Day. This year District III YAD was scheduled for June 25th, hosted by Lodge No. 25, Ennis. Head

Youth Leader Bessie Petr encouraged every one to attend the YAD's activities. All camp forms were due to Mrs. Petr notarized by June 30th.

The month of July is always dedicated to our Teens. July 1 -Annual Bake Sale at Rudolph's Meat Market. We all were asked to bring some sort of pastry for our Teens to sale. July 11 -- Dinner and Game Night, 6 p.m. Teens to be selling prize tickets and dance tickets. The Teens asked that we donate items for their game night. Before the games start, at approximately 7:30 p.m., our Junior Youth Club will calla short meeting to order. The Teen Princess Ball will be July 15, music by Henry Rejcek, crowning announced approximately at 10:30 p.m.

Camp this year at Val Verde is scheduled for July 20 - 23rd. Mrs. Petr has lots of fun activities planned for all of us at camp, so pack a lot of stuff.

Youth Leader Linda Coker had an original idea of camp nametags, so every one was willing to adjourn the meeting and start on the nametags, Beseda practice, group talent practice and those who wanted to practice on the stage for individual practice.

While having our annual summer party, the door prizes were handed to several "Lucky Members."

24 Cyclone Youth Meeting

Dear Readers, State Youth Director Claudette Reese recently stated that in order to acquire points for a monthly meeting, a meeting MUST be held. Therefore, the July meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club will be held Sunday, July 30, 1989, beginning at 1 p.m.

Following the meeting, the youth club members and parents are invited to attend the July social, which will be at the new Summer Fun USA in Belton, Texas. Each family is asked to bring enough food for their family. Drinks will be provided by the youth club.

Adults and/or guests prices for the park will be $5 for swimmers and $2 for non - swimmers.

Our regular July meeting was to be held on Sunday, July 9th, however, this was the District II YAD at Holland Lodge No. 80.

Congratulations to all Cyclone and District II youth who participated and placed in the day's events. First place Individual Talent winners from Lodge 24 are: Mark Macek (6 - 9) and Melanie Zavodny (15 - 17). Kindra and Michelle Mikeska placed third in Junior Group Talent. Congratulations to all Lodge 24 Craft winners in State.

Dear Vestnik Readers, From June 9 - 11, 1989, Angela Clayton, Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace and Tommie Wallace from Lodge 88, Houston went to LIT Retreat along with District V's Lodge 172, Pasadena LIT James Pruitt, DYC Marie Stayton and Assistant Nancy Steubing drove and went along with us.

The whole weekend we were constantly kept busy.

After our arrival, we went off to unload our gear and claim a bunk, we got our name tags and registered with SYD Claudette Reese, and we signed a big sign that said "LIT Retreat." Once everyone had arrived and settled in to the cabins, we met in the big dining hall to play a couple of games. We played a "get - acquainted" game where you have to match up two parts of a movie with another person. We were also given these little hair clips

Afterwards, Lodge 88 LITs went with their DYCs Marie and Nancy to help them build the campfire.

Next, we painted T - shirts. Since we are known as the seven dwarfs, Marlene drew the dwarfs' faces and we painted them on the back of our white T - shirts. Angela -- Grumpy, Michelle -- Sneezy, Darlene -- Happy, Marlene

Wednesday, July 19, 1989—VESTNIK/11 -- Sleepy, Crystal -- Doc, and Tommie -- Bashful. Brian Havemann is also an LIT from Lodge 88, but couldn't make it to LIT Retreat at the last minute but he is Dopey.

Finally, we took a hayride to the campfire which was out by the river.

There four different people came up from the four different directions (North, South, East and West) and said a few comments. Michelle was'one of those people. They also lit that direction of the fire. After it was lit, Lodge 88 LITs led the others in the songs. After singing, we made some more and ended with the SPJST Fraternity Song and pledge. The day ended with a midnight swim.

The next day started bright and early with a hike. Then, Crystal was the caller for the flag ceremony with Darlene, Angela, Marlene, Michelle and Tommie as flag bearers. Then following breakfast, we planned our Halloween Party for that night. we helped out by making invitations for the party. We also hung them up all around camp.

Later, we had a speaker, Pam Tischler came and talked to us about drugs and alchohol. This information will help us to notice if there is a child who may have a drug or alcohol problem, and we were also told what we should do.

Later after lunch, Sue Harrington came to camp to teach us some creative dramatic games. This was lots of fun.

We played games like mirroring people's sounds and movements, making machines, growing into different things and walking through space.

Next we learned a new craft. For the boys, there were airplanes, and the girls had heart necklaces made out of wood. We painted the pieces of hearts on the airplane. Then we strung them on a ribbon with beads.

Later we enjoyed a super Halloween Party. Everyone wore a unique costume. Angela was a head banger, Michelle was a seven dwarf, Darlene was a country hick, Marlene was a new waver, Crystal was a Chinese girl and Tommie was a surgeon. We played many games like people to people. We had an invitation for all new LITs coming to LIT Retreat. We had Angela Clayton, Michelle Linney and Tommie Wallace.

Afterwards, we learned a new dance for some called BINGO. Then some stayed to dance.

The last day started out with our balloon release and saying good - bye.

Here everyone gathered around the flagpole to say something about being at LIT Retreat and to release their balloons which is what we will do at camp. Then after breakfast, we split up into four teams, with Crystal as one of the team captains, to play volleyball. First, we played two games, and then the two champion teams played each other, with Crystal's team being one of them, but she was defeated by Jason Reese's team.

Next, Tim Reese spoke to us about being a real leader, and he put us into roles of pretending that the leaders were kids. Then, we learned three new games. The first one was passing hula hoops through everyone holding hands. We also were blindfolded and given numbers in a group and our leader had to put us in order. Then, our groups were a certain animal, and their leader was blindfolded. The animals directed the leader to find candy on the ground. Crystal was leader of her group.

After lunch, all of us from District V had to leave early to make it back to Houston in good time. I'd like to

thank SYD Claudette Reese and all the other leaders for such a great time.

88 Houston Youth Attend Retreat Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: On June 9th, 10th and 11th, LITs from all seven districts of, the SPJST attended LIT Retreat. This year, LIT Retreat was held at Camp Val Verde in McGregor, Texas. While there were many familiar faces, there were also many new ones. Thirty - eight LITs attended this year, compared to the eight in attendance last year and fifteen adults. In District V alone, there were seven LITs, namely, Angela Clayton (88), Michelle Linney (88), Darlene Migl (88), Marlene Migl (88), James Pruitt (172), Crystal Wallace (88) and Tommie Wallace (88), along with DYC Marie Stayton and her assistant, Nancy Steubing.

LIT Retreat taught me a lot on how to make camp more enjoyable for the campers. Besides learning the new games and songs, I learned leadership.

I made a lot of new friends and got to know my old friends better. During the weekend, we experienced T - shirt painting, a camp fire, a flag ceremony, creative dramatics, games, party planning, dancing, a leadership workshop, swimming, hiking and more. We even had a Halloween Costume Party!

Although this is my last year as an LIT, I don't intend to drop out of the SPJST, not at all. Instead, I hope to become even more active within my lodge and district. I intend to remain in the SPJST for years to come!

I would like to thank all of those who made this retreat such a success; especially SYD Claudette Reese and SL President Howard Leshikar. Also to all of the wonderful DYCs and youth leaders. We had a great time and, without them, it wouldn't have been possible! I hope to see all of you at State YAD. A funny thing happened to us on the trip back home; actually, it wasn't that funny. As we were heading for Houston, our car had a blowout!

While we waited for someone to help us on the side of the road, since we had no other alternatives, an "Aggie" stopped and changed our tire! And just in case he sees this, "thanks!" All of us in the car promised never, again, would we tell another Aggie joke.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The July youth club meeting came to order at 7:30 p.m. by Vice President Michelle Linney.

Sergeant - at - Arms Julie Cayton led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag; after the pledge, members stood for a moment of silence. Then we sang the Fraternity Song and recited the Youth Club Pledge.

The register was read; there were 19 members, 3 guests and 9 adults. Guests introduced were Brandi Adams, Regina Thomas and Tommy Hollaway. Our July social will be either July 14th or 21st at the

Lighthouse for the Blind and we will have hotdogs and a swim party.

Our Youth Leader Barbara Linney did not have a whole lot to report, except that our newest fund - raiser of selling Golden C books will be picked up on August 26th; also, she said that she really enjoyed our June social at the Lodge 88 pool.

Our DYC Marie Stayton reported that camp will be on July 29th - August 1st. Our well - deserved trip to San Antonio was finally taken and the 41 members who went (including chaperones) had a BLAST! We stayed at the Lackland Air Force Base and, while we stayed there, we ate with the Marines and some of us made friends, like Nicholas Havemann, who had the

privilege of eating with a Marine at his table. Our trip only cost $1,040 and some odd cents, so we saved $640 and some odd cents.

The minutes will be read at the August meeting because our secretary is on vacation in Las Vegas. This month we have raised $303 and some odd cents.

Lodge No. 88 Houston --Soucheks Celebrate 59th Anniversary Brother William and Sister Alice Souchek celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary at Lodge No. 88 June 10, exactly 59 years from their wedding date of June 10, 1930.

Alice is a native Houstonian whose grandmother was born in Houston 131 years ago. She comes from a long line of artists, but, somewhere along the way, Alice stopped painting and started porcelain painting. She taught private lessons for more than eight years.

Her works are beautiful and she is certainly a master of arts.

Now for Bill, as he is known to all of his friends, a native of Iowa City, Iowa who came to Houston in 1927 as a young man who wanted to teach school.

He is a graduate of the University of Iowa in the class of 1927 and was interviewed and selected to teach at Kinkaid School in Houston.

After having taught for 20 years at Kinkaid, he went to work as mortgage loan appraiser for Prudential Insurance Company in Houston where he retired after 25 years.

Bill got to thinking that "I can't and won't sit back in my retirement years and do nothing."

His main desire was to carry on the Czech heritage and, with his background and knowledge of the Czech language, he set out to teach the language.

He instructed Czech classes at Alvin Community College in Alvin, Texas for 10 years; San Jacinto Junior College, Pasadena, Texas for 3 years; Spring Branch Community College, Houston, Texas for 6 years; University of Houston, Houston, Texas for 3 years.

After having accomplished these feats, Bill hasn't stopped yet -- to those of us at SPJST Lodge No. 88 who know him well as being a "go - getter" he is still going strong and has been teaching the Czech language classes at Lodge No. 88 for 6 years.

Truly this is a man dedicated to his fellowmen who has and still is welding a lasting relationship with the Czech community.

Odstrcil - Michalewicz Wedding Kerry Jean Odstrcil of Temple became the bride of Stephen Lynn Michalewicz of Temple in a double ring ceremony Friday, June 30, 1989 at Temple Brethren Church.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gene Odstrcil of Temple. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Eugene Michalewicz of Temple.

The Rev. Mark Labaj officiated.

Music was by Kim Dillard, organist.

Given in marrige by her father, the bride wore a gown of white taffeta and Venice lace with a high illusion neckline of silk Venice lace, pearl, and iridescent trim featuring a sweetheart bodice, short puff sleeves with selfflower trim and a cathedral train.

Matron of honor was Gena Schiller, sister of the bride of Austin.

Bridemaids were Sherrell Hecke of Belton, Debra Jones and Monica Guenat, both of Temple.

Best man was Larry Michalewicz, brother of the groom of Denton.

Groomsmen were Chuck Northam, Ronnie Kasberg and David Presley, all of Temple.

Dan Elmore of Killeen, Kevin Coats of Morgans Point and Tommy Calhoun, Jr. of Temple were seating the guests.

A reception followed at Seaton Star Hall.

After a wedding trip to Oklahoma City, the couple will live in Temple.

The bride, a graduate of Temple High School, attended Temple Junior College. She is employed at Ralph Wilson Plastics in the Accounting Department.

A graduate of Temple High School, the bridegroom attended Stephen F. Austin University and Texas State Technical Institute in Waco where he received an Associate of Science degree in civil engineering. He is employed as a construction engineer for Evans Construction in Killeen.

The bridegroom's parents were hosts for the rehearsal dinner at River Forest Smorgasbord in Belton.

The bride is the granddaughter of Mrs. Miladie Jecmenek and the late Clarence Jecmenek of Rogers, Mrs. Velma Odstrcil, and the late John Odstrcil of Temple.

Sumrow Wedding

FORT WORTH -- Lisa Sumrow became the bride of Danny Suges in a double ring ceremony March 11, 1989 in Birchman Baptist Church with Miles Seaborn officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Patricia Beane Britton, formerly of Greenville and Medford Sumrow, formerly of Merit. The bridegroom's parents are Mrs. Tina Cox and Dr. Don Suges, both of Fort Worth.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of Chantilly lace with fitted bodice, basque waist and Elizabeth sleeves. It was trimmed with Venise lace, appliques and simulated pearls, and featured a chapel - length train. Her fingertip veil was accented with pearls and Chantilly lace. She carried a bouquet of white orchids and roses.

Wendy Britton was maid of honor for her sister. Bridesmaids were Debra Hunter and Kitty Jaynes. Autumn Fuller was flower girl and Justen Naughton was ring bearer.

David Suges served as best man for his brother. Groomsmen were Darin Bezner and Ira Meacham, ushers were Tal Milan, Mike Moody, Joel Fincher and Mike Cox. Josh Milan was candlelighter.

Martin Critz and Teryn Naughton provided nuptial music and Critz was soloist.

Following a wedding trip to Las Vegas, the couple is residing in Irving.

The bride graduated from Pine Tree High School and attended Kilgore College and the University of North Texas. She is employed by Tex Mar,

Mrs. Danny Suges Inc. in Dallas. Danny is a graduate of Creek Country Club.

Westfest

Taroky Tournament

This year the Westfest directors have planned to host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Annual Westfest Celebration. The tournament will be held at the Westfest grounds in West, Texas on September 2, 1989.

Entry fee will be $8 per person.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. with play starting at 10 a.m. Play should conclude about 6:30 p.m. The tournament will be limited to 64 players 18 years of age or older.

Trophies will be awarded the top 4 players of the day.

To allow everyone equal chance to become a player, 64 entry forms will be randomly drawn on August 9th to determine those who will play. Those persons whose names are drawn will be notified immediately and provided

with all the tournament information and a gate pass. Those entries not drawn will also be notified and their entry fee refunded.

Coffee and kolache will be provided during registration with lunch available for purchase on the Westfest grounds. All persons wishing to enter should submit their completed entry form and $8 fee before August 9th to Westfest Taroky Tournament, P.O. Box 70, West, Texas 76691.

You remember that in your study of English, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns.

I. Personal: jd, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my and vy.

2. Possessive: milj, tvuj, jeho, jeji, n8, v8, etc.

3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono.

4. Interrogative: kdo? co? kterY? jak'? ei?

5. Relative: kter', jen (who, which, that...), kdo, co.

6. Indefinite: Mad°, nekterY, nejakY, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns: kaklY, vgechen; sam, sama, samo, tal, tee latter all expressing identity.

7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, ladnY ***

ed colloquially, as is: Od to doby, co...; Lidi, co tarn byli...

Jen2 is used mostly in literary style; in speech it is replaced by "ktery"— instead of mu g , jeho znam, we say mu2, ktereho znam.

6. Indefinite pronouns: nekdo, nektery, nejakY, Wade, Wady; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, ei-si; also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jak'-koli, kterYkoli; also the prefix lec: lec-kdo.

KaldY may be used only with countable objects; v gechen for uncountable objects. In the plural, v gichni does duty for both countables and uncountables.

Ex.: kahlY nova, kaida iena, kahle devee. vgichni lide, v gechny 2eny, vgechny chleby, v gechna deveata.

Sam means "alone": byl jsem tam sam.

Samy, sama, same, are used to express an idea of fullness or richness: stromy byly sam' kvet; byli tam sami cizinci; na samern konci; u sameho okna.

7. Negative pronouns: if the prefix ni -- is added to the personal pronouns, they are turned into negative pronouns ni-kdo, nic. From kterY, jak', the negative pronoun ladnY is used before nouns: iadnY elovek, 2adna iena, etc.

Pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables and in processed foods such as apple juice and applesauce are putting youngsters at serious risk of cancer and neurological damage, according to a new report by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

After a two - year study of preschoolers' diets, NRDC concludes that of children now age 1 to 5, up to 6,200 or 0.03 percent, will eventually get cancer from pesticides they have consumed. The most damaging of 23 chemicals studied is daminozide, or Alar, used to enhance the growth and appearance of red apples. That pesticide alone increases a child's chances of getting cancer by 240 times over the 1 - in - a million risk considered acceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency, the study says. Because they consume far more apple juice and other affected products than adults do, children are especially vulnerable to pesticides.

Also, young bodies metabolize toxins less efficiently than do older ones.

Many of the toxins studied, Alar included, penetrate food and cannot be washed off or removed by peeling.

But parents can reduce a child's exposure to pesticides by scrubbing all produce in soap and water, buying domestically grown produce that is in season, purchasing organically grown foods and using fewer processed foods. Beech - Nut and Gerber products do not contain Alar. Next month, NRDC will come out with a book on pesticides and safe eating.
