The last issue of Vestnik (July 5), on page 8 you probably and, it is hoped, read the letter from Youth Leader Theresa Haag of Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels about their starting a Camp (FRA) Fund. It is an encouraging sign of how our membership feels, however, even though real estate prices have been reduced and the future does not look bright in that respect, this problem DOES take a large amount of consideration by our Supreme Lodge.

Our insurance sales seem slowed down and our investments seem to be the mainstay of our progress.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska and Financial Secretary Mikulas need to be able to know the income and expenses of each department.

Before the convention in 1988, the Outside Audit recommended the departments might do well to budget themselves. Certainly, an organization of our size in membership and financially, needs to know how we are functioning.

In the Supreme Lodge Minutes (Vestnik - May 17, page 3, column 3, paragraph 4.) we were glad to see that an "inside examination" was being made at the Supreme Lodge. Quote: Family Recreational Area (FRA) -Information on a FRA of another fraternal society was distributed and reviewed.

Consideration was given to the proposed FRA and it was suggested that available information be compiled for decision during the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

President Leshikar moved that continued efforts be made in visiting and gathering information on other camp facilities. He further moved that we pursue information on determining whether profitability of new products can bear the additional expense of the FRA and that appropriate study be obtained on product profitability.

Director Harms seconded and the motion carried unanimously. *** To stop life from passing you by, get into an activity where you participate with other people. Sing with a group or join a card club, or sign up at your neighborhood bowling lanes for a team. The hardest part is the start.

Once you've passed that point you'll be right on key, having a ball.

Taking an interest and getting involved with the teaching of children can be educational experience for adults, too.

Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their party. Even political organizations of all kinds want grass roots support, and to get it, they welcome the efforts of men and women who believe in their principles.

If you're looking for a way to be connected with the latest medical advances, contact your community hospital and ask for information about volunteer work. Your own "Operation Hospital" can be a healthy sign indeed.

Whether it involves collecting needed funds or working directly with the disadvantaged, few activities are as rewarding (to givers as well as recipients) as are devoting your time and effort to the less. fortunate.

Gardening is a pastime growing on more and more men and women. Even if the only space you have is in a window box, you can delight in making things grow without uprooting your conventional comforts.

Another way to become a blooming genius is through studies in adult education. With low tuition, these courses are offered in a wide variety of subjects including personal investment management, foreign languages and poetry writing. Consult your community college for further information.

We also suggest to take an interest in your health by losing weight if you need to. Read up on it and stay with it until you've reached the goal set by you and your doctor.

Buy a bicycle and use it. By exercising this right to exercise, you can create a vitalizing cycle that will invigorate your health and spirit.

Regardless of whether you prefer popular or classical music, attending concerts, buying records and reading up on this pleasurable pastime, can be music to your ears and a sound decision.

History needn't be a mystery if you specialize in the knowledge of particular eras. Civil War buffs often add to their understanding by reading a wide variety of volumes on the subject and visiting the scenes of major ban les. Or you may want to choose the American Revolution or the Roaring Twenties.

People of all ages who never considered themselves athletes have derived enormous pleasure by unwinding in games like golf or tennis or even croquet. When it comes to exhilarating competition, they certainly know the score.

There's no better way to retain youthful vigor than through continued association with youngsters. Concern yourself and get involved with SPJST activities which welcome guidance from adults in planning and taking educational trips, judging arts and crafts, talent, royalty and sports competition and supervising other social events.

Becoming conversant in a foreign tongue can bring new meaning to your life. If you don't have the time to attend classes, you may find that some of the foreign language records now on the market can make a pronounced contribution to your knowledge of differing cultures.

The time may have arrived when you're tired of the same scenery day after day. Then why put up with it?

With the easy availability of road maps and experts who can help you plan any excursion -- and with airplanes that can zoom you to the land of your dreams in hours -- there's little to prevent you from going places. Travels can be an excellent way to escape travails.

Lodge No. 13, Dime Box Meeting Dear Members and Friends: The SPJST Lodge No. 13 had its monthly meeting on June 18 at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by Brother Rick Ford, president. Susan Spacek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Dorothy Rachel and Sister Debbie Kostelka read the minutes and report. It was approved as read.

Magdelena Islet read the mortality report.

There were 11 officers present and 2 absent.

We went over the Memorial Day Picnic and were pleased. We would like to thank everyone who had any part in that day. Thanks!

The hall has decided to cut out having happy hour and the security guards.

We would like to welcome our new member, Carry Rifl.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:50 p.m.

Dear Members: Lodge 66 will meet on Sunday, July 16 at 2:30 p.m. The youth will meet at 2 p.m.

Members are asked to bring sandwiches. The chips, drinks and desserts will be furnished by Entertainment Committee and our lodge.

There will be a vote taken to change a rule concerning the duties of the bar chairman.

Members are asked to bring a small gift to be used in the games after our meeting to raise money for charity.

No. 172, Pasadena

We're going to have a fund - raising "M.A.R.K. Dance," for the Mark Kilroy Foundation on Sunday evening, August 6 from 2 to 7:30 p.m., $5 donation each, at our ballroom, 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas. There will be four different country - western bands playing one hour each, ALL donating their music. We will have pastry, sandwiches, hot dogs for sale and also have a drawing for various items. All monies raised will go to the MARK KILROY FOUNDATION. This foundation is also having people sign petitions throughout the United States, then, they will send them to Washington, D.C. to the Secretary of Drugs, asking the federal government, for a law, that will help control the drug dealers and users.

They want to make use of the closed army camps, and make confinement camps for drug dealers, also rehabilitation centers, for drug addicts. M.A.R.K. stands for "MAKE A RESPONSIBLE KOMMITMENT." Mark Kilroy was the young man from Santa Fe, Texas, who got killed in Matomoros, Mexico, by a drug cult.

He was visiting there on a spring break, while attending University of Texas. Let's all help his parents, James and Helen Kilroy, with this foundation.

I am proud of our fraternal affair coordinator Brother Irvin Theiss to undertake this project. He got Sister Bobbye Johnson to assist him, Sister Helen Wallace, entertainment chairman, and the rest of the committee are all helping. They will be asking all members and now members, for donating sandwiches, pastry, wieners, chipped barbecue, gifts for auction, money, etc. If you want to send money, make checks payable to M.A.R.K. and mail them to SPJST Lodge No. 172 Pasadena, 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas 77505, or call (713) 487 - 3297.

I am also proud of the lodge for undertaking this project, and I supported it 100 percent, so let's all be true fraternalists 100 percent, and all help to make this dance a huge success.

Tickets are on sale already, there will be no reservations made for seating at this dance, so let's all share tables together, the ballroom has seating capacity of 1000, and the danc( floor hold 1000 or more at one time.

There will be security provided by Pasadena Police and South Houston Police.

M.A.R.K. THE WHY'S OF THE PEOPLE'S SOLUTION Why is a great change needed?

Present federal government strategy is to stop illegal drugs at the border.

The fifteen people who killed Mark Kilroy were selling one million dollars worth of marijuana per week. They have been either caught or were found dead. Now fifteen other people have obviously taken their place and the smuggling of marijuana continues.

Government spending increases annually in an attempt to stop smugglers, by adding soldiers, planes, ships and radar. It is not working.

Only 20 percent of the illegal drugs entering this country are being seized.

Who is the enemy?

Colombian President Virgilio Barco calls the United States' demand for drugs... "the single greatest threat to democracy in our hemisphere." The Supreme Court judges in Colombia were attacked and killed while they tried to prosecute the drug kings there.

Countries around the world are not going to stop producing illegal drugs just because we ask. The U.S. drug demand and the resulting profits are too great.

We are at war and WE are the enemy! If our apathy allows the demand for illegal drugs to continue, we, as a nation, are doomed.

When Mark Kilroy was found, Matamoros had 500 Mexican soldiers defending us from our demand for illegal drugs. Can we expect foreign armies to protect us from ourselves?

Can't our armed forces protect us?, What is the cost of the drug problem?

The annual cost to our nation for this drug crisis is estimated at 300 billion dollars and is rapidly increasing. This cost does not include the value of the lives of Mark Kilroy and the countless other innocent victims. The grief and suffering of the families and friends of addicts, as well as victims, has not been included in the cost. And finally, the value of lost souls is infinite.

Over eighty percent of all crimes committed in the United States are now drug related. Only 27 percent of the convicted drug sellers are imprisoned and the average prison term is only sixteen months. In Houston, the "Candy Man" who poisoned his son was given the death penalty. Now six million sellers of poison do so without fear of punishment. The rewards for selling illegal drugs are extremely high compared to the punishment that is administered to those who are caught.

Many sellers would quit immediately if there was fear of penalty.

The crime rate has doubled in the last four years and the chances of you becoming a victim of crime this year is one in four. Although you may feel just as safe as you did four years ago, you are twice as likely to be touched by crime today.

The cost for "THE PEOPLE'S SOLUTION" The cost of The People's Solution is minimal because it is the united efforts of everyone. Rehabilitation costs can be minimized by expanding existing group therapy organizations.

Churches can provide supplemental volunteer workers and financial aid to these programs. Cities, counties, states

Mark Kilroy Foundation THE PEOPLE'S SOLUTION Federal Law must regulate drug abuse. Drugs cross interstate and international boundaries.

Objective 1: ELIMINATE THE PUSHER -- The person who sells illegal drugs to the user.

1. Confine and Rehabilitate all retail drug sellers -- not just wholesalers.

A. Four - year mandatory term (no parole) in a drug rehabilitation, training, education and work program.

B. Second - Time Offender -- Ten year mandatory (no parole) confinement in a work program.

C. Confiscate all property of drug sellers. Proceeds shall be used to fund capture of drug sellers.

Provide grants to city and county police for capture of retail drug sellers.

E. Pay rewards for capture of drug sellers based on property confiscated.

F. No age limit. Even young kids who sell drugs should be sent through a military school -- training, education and rehabilitation.

2. Establish multi level confinement system based on criminal record and conduct in the program.

A. Confinement camps will be run by the armed forces. The police, not the armed forces, will retain all law enforcement power.

B. Abandoned military bases will be reactivated for confinement program.

C. Assignment to the type of confinement is subject to change based on reward and punishment system.

D. Each state will be required to maintain present prison system planning.

Objective 2: GET EVERYONE BUT ADDICTS TO QUIT NOW -1.Stop casual drug users from using drugs so that they do not become addicted.

Make drugs socially unacceptable.

3. Increase education about drugs and the destruction it causes.

4. Rehabilitate drug users referred through counseling, without police involvement.

5. If you have a friend who is using drugs, speak up and tell a counselor because you care.

Objective 3: PROVIDE REHABILITATION FOR DRUG ADDICTS -1. After any felony arrest, identify drug addicts with a mandatory drug test or by their possession of illegal drugs.

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond is Theresia Walger. We are sorry to hear that Paul Shafer is still hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish him a speedy recovery.

We regret the death of Maxine Hood and William Polak. Maxine and William will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith from Wallis came to have Bible study with the residents. Eula Ganske will take her place now during summer months. Monday, June 19 was observed at the nursing home by our staff dressing to their custom. Seeing the residents laugh was well worth the effort.

Thursday afternoon, June 22, Gladys Hix, Sophie Rusnak, Louis Smith, Edmund Brandi, James Little and Martha Marx (S.A.D.) went riding to Boling and New Gulf area.

Thursday evening, June 29, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents.

Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

The birthday party was held Friday afternoon, June 30, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with his accordian and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres, United Church of Christ Guild provided cakes, Lydia Hortmon brought a cake and Eileen Alaminsky brought cookies and a birthday cake for her mother, Emma S. Tielke. Volunteers -- Lydia Hortmon, Melva Hastings and Ida Gasch helped serve coffee, punch, cake, ice cream and cookies to all.

Camp Activities Scheduled For District I Dear Campers, District I will be camping soon and I am sure all of you are looking forward to camp. Arrival time is between 2 and 3 p.m. on Monday, July 17th with departure at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 20th.

One of our camp crafts will be personalized T - shirts, so make sure you bring a new, plain, light colored T - shirt to decorate. (White color works the best).

We will be having special activities each night at camp including a Halloween party, a campfire and a hayride. Be sure to bring a costume for the Halloween party and jeans for the hayride.

This year's camp theme is FLIGHT. We will be doing several activities pertaining to flight including decorating kites and having a kite flying contest. Also planned is a special movie on this topic.

Put a big smile on and we will see you at camp.

IV Camp News

District

This year District IV will try its wings and camp on its own. We will be going to Camp Paluxy in Bluff Dale about 8 miles northeast of Stephenville, Texas.

The camping session will begin July 17th at 11 a.m. We will do all of the usual "camp" things until around 10 a.m. on the 19th when we will depart for Six Flags. We have a fun schedule planned with many new and different things to do, so be sure to be there!

Things to bring: 1) Bedding: Sheets, pillow and light cover or sleeping bag 2) Swim suit and towel 3) Towels and wash cloths 4) Toilet articles (toothbrush, soap, brush, etc.)

Lodge 47 Seaton YC Meeting The July 2nd youth club meeting was called to order by President Jason Reese. There were 29 members, visitors and 7 parents present. Our visitors were David Heji and Brook Glaser.

Our youth club won't have a July social since it is a busy month with District II YAD, Sunday, July 9 at Lodge 80 in Holland. I wish everyone a lot of good luck on their entries.

District II camp will be July 23 through 29 at Camp Val Verde. e had a nice trip to. NASA in Houston, Galveston to the beach and back to Houston to Astroworld and Waterworld on June 30 and July 1st.

Thanks to our Youth Leader Patsy Koslovskv and Assistant Judy Penal for all the work of getting this trip put to gether for us. Also thanks to all the parents who went with us as chaperones.

We discussed of doing this again next year at the meeting and how e need to raise money for it.

District V Youth Club Dear Readers, On June 4, 1989, Lodge 88 Houston held their annual "Homecoming With a Splash." The youth club took advantage of this day to raise a few dollars, to give a few dollars, and gain some new members.

First of all, beginning around 11 a.m. youth members Kristy Sokol, Michelle ninney, Tommie Wallace, Crystal Wallace, Cindy Groendes, Marlene Migl and Darlene Migl began taking down payments of $1 for our latest fund - raiser Gold C Coupon books.

At Splash Day, one could give us $1 towards an $8 Gold C Coupon book and they would receive their receipt.

After already purchasing the book, they would receive it on the first week of September. For each book, the youth club sells, they get $4.

While we were taking these down payments, we passed out flyers telling "Non - Youth Club Members" youth to meet at the gazebo at 3 p.m. for a little social time to encourage them to join the youth club. Youth club officers and leaders spoke to the youth about the different things the youth club does and the advantages of being in such a wonderful club. This was very successful because we got 3 new members at our next meeting, namely, Carrie Kadlecek, Jennifer Welfi and Shannon McGee. Who knows, maybe more will join later.

Also that day, the youth club sponsored a beauty contest and a big splash contest. It was really great that so many of our youth club members won in the contests which were open to all youth present. Some of our members in the beauty contest were Kristy Sokol, Lindsey Michalek, Angela Gloria and Cindy Gorendes. A former youth club member, Lee Pflughaupt, was the big winner in the big splash contest. Prizes for the contests were everyone's favorite money.

The day of swimming and roasting in the sun and playing on the playgrounds was wonderful for everyone.

We talked about a fun - trip that we just came back from. Even though it rained going to Houston and Galveston, we all had a lot of fun. We went to the beach, Seawolf Park, rode the ferry boat at night, went to the gift shops, Astroworld and Waterworld and also to NASA. We did a lot of things in 2 days. I liked the water slides and the wave pool the most at Waterworid. Our bus driver, Migil, was a real nice guy.

Our District II YAD will be July 9 at Holland SPJST Hall and our district will be going to camp on July 23 at Camp Val Verde. This will also be fun.

Waco Youth Competes In Gymnastics Jesika Tierce competed Class 3 C.O. this season at High Tumblers' Gymnastics in Waco, she currently holds a third place in the state in uneven bars and the vault in compulsaries, and a second in the state in Optionals on the Uneven Bars.

Jesika is very active in her youth club at Lodge 66, she is president for the 1989 - 90 year and also treasurer of District III for this year.

She is very proud to be in the SPJST, and encourages all youth to get involved, she feels that is what makes a good youth club.

Jesika is the daughter of David and Sharon Tierce of Lodge 66 and the granddaughter of Leo and Sandra Dennis of Elk, Texas.

47 Seaton YC Holds Meeting

Lodge 47 Youth Club held their monthly meeting on July 2, at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Jason Reese. We had 29 members, 2 visitors, 7 adults and Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky and her Assistant Judy Pechal.

KILLEEN -- Services for ADOLPH J. LUKSA, 59, of Killeen were at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Crawford - Bowers Funeral Home of Killeen with the Rev. Jim Currie officiating. Burial with full military honors was at Killeen City Cemetery.

Brother Luksa died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Caldwell, Texas where he was reared and educated. In 1976, he retired from the military service after 26 years with the rank of first sergeant.

His military honors include the National Defense Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; the Korean Service Medal, with two Bronze Stars; the United Nations Service Medal; the Bronze Star; the Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars; the Vietnamese Cross of Galantry with Palm; and the Good Conduct Clasp, Silver, Three Loops.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3892 of Harker Heights, the American Legion Post No. 223 of Killeen and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 22 of Nolanville. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell.

Survivors are one son, Douglas Luksa of Belton; two daughters, Faye McConnell of Killeen and Edie Luksa of Harker Heights; mother, Fannie Luksa of Caldwell; two brothers, Clint Luksa and Johnny Luksa, both of Caldwell and two grandchildren.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No 17, New Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister PAULINE ELLA LEHDE, who passed away on Sunday, May 14, 1989 in Burleson Memorial Hospital, Caldwell, Texas. She attained the age of 69 years.

Sister Lehde was born. November 19, 1919, in Burleson County, she was the daughter of Milady Maresh Reeves of Caldwell and the late Joe Mikeska. A lifelong resident of Caldwell, she was a homemaker. She worked for Keller Ladders and Chair Manufacturing for 10 years and for Nagel Manufacturing and Supply Company for 10 years.

She was an active member in the Caldwell Brethren Church until her illness 10 years ago .. She taught Sunday school several years, taught Confirmation classes and sang in the Choir. She was an active member in the Caldwell Brethren Church Christian Sisters. She was married to Franklin Lehde on June 19, 1937.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin Lehde of Caldwell; one daughter, Marilyn Lehde Berrick of Caldwell; her mother, Mrs. Milady Reeves of Caldwell; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A brother, James Reeves, preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Sister Lehde were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 in the Caldwell Brethren Church with Rev. Daniel Marek and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were J.B. Whearly, Delbert Baasen, Kenneth Baasen, Carl Maresh, Leon Maresh, J.D. Suehs, Duane Suehs and Terry Suehs.

Funeral services for Sister Havel were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18 in Phillips - Luckey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

She was preceded in death by a son, Albert Joe Billeck in November, 1945.

Mrs. Vasek was born in Bleiblerville to Joe Matous and Rosalie Hejl Coufal Matous. She was a Bell County resident for 75 years and a member of Temple Brethren Church and Christian Sisters of the Church. She also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vasek; a son, Albert Vasek; five brothers, William Matous, John Coufal, Bob Coufal, Joe Coufal and Emil Coufal; a sister, Marie Svoboda; a step - sister, Theresa Marek and three sons who died in infancy.

Survivors are two sons, Ed Vasek of Amarillo and Frank Vasek of Temple; a daughter, Edna Pechal of Temple; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

EDWARD W. [Eddie] JECMENEK. Funeral services for Edward W. (Eddie) Jecmenek, 18, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 1989, at the First Baptist Church in Rogers, Texas, with the Rev. Steve Cochran officiating. Burial was in the Rogers Cemetery.

Brother Jecmenek died Sunday afternoon in a Temple hospital from injuries received in a car - train accident in Rogers.

He was born in Temple to Richard and Anita Coleman Jecmenek. He lived in Rogers all his life. He was a student at Rogers High School, where he was active in the Cross Country Track Team, the Band, and the Annual Staff. He would have been a senior in the coming school year. Czech

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 6, at the American Legion Hall in Crosby, Texas. The hall is located on FM2100, across the street from Wal - Mart.

Activities will start around 1 p.m. with an informal fellowship hour.

Members and guests will have ample opportunity to display and discuss their Czech memorabilia and family histories.

The business meeting will start promptly at 2 p.m., followed by brief reports on trips made by some of the members to Czechoslovakia this past spring.

The highlight of the afternoon's activities will be a demonstration, starting at 4 p.m. of some of the

traditional dances done by early Czech residents in Texas. The dances include the Garden Waltz, the Seven - Step Polka, Put Your Little Foot, Annie in the Cabbage Patch and several schottisches. The program will be performed by dancers from the Texas Chapter of P.O.L.K. of A. Alfred Stryk is president of the Texas Chapter of P.O.L.K. of A., as well as a member of the Harris County Chapter of The Czech Heritage Society.

Owner Seeks Respect For Prairie Dog Woman credits animal with saving child's life

Litwin Wins Alpha Oleřlns Contact In Czechoslovakia LITWIN OF FRANCE, a member of the engineering division of AMCA International, has been awarded a major contract to supply an alpha olefins plant to Czechoslovakia.

Won against competition from Chisso Engineering - Mitsui, the Yen9.646bn ($70.3m) contract covers detailed design, procurement and construction supervision for a 120 000 ton - year plant to be built at the Spolana. works in Neratovice.

Under an earlier contract awarded in late 1987, Litwin carried out basic engineering on the plant using Chevron's process technology.

The facility will be supplied by a 50 50 joint venture between Litwin and Yoest - Alpine of Austria, with the French contractor taking responsibility for detailed design of the process plant and Yoest - Alpine for the offsites.

Equipment procurement will be shared between the two companies.

French export credit backed by Coface. will be used to finance half the contract value. The remaining part will be covered by export credit from Austria.

Ethylene feedstock will be supplied through a 50km pipeline from Litvinov, where Chemopetrol operates a 450 000 ton - year cracker. The new plant will allow Chemopetrol to operate the cracker at full capacity.

Insufficient downstream capacity has kept the ethylene plant running at below design levels.

Spolana's plant will become Eastern Europe's second alpha olefins production facility. A 75 000 ton - year Ethyl Corp - process plant is still under construction at Nizhnekamsk in the Soviet Union. Davy is the contractor.

The USSR has expressed interest in buying 60 percent of the Naratovice plant's output. This is expected to be handled through the Czechoslovak foreign trade company Chemapol.

The award represents a major achievement for Litwin, which has recently scored a number of successes in Eastern Europe; an area it specializes in. In the Soviet Union the contractor has been awarded a $50m contract for a 30 000 ton - year thermoplastic styrenebutadiene elastomers plant at Voronezh and is also involved in a feasibility study into an $800- 900mjoint venture with Dow

ROCKDALE -- Once a week Johnnie Lorraine Matl hunches over her four prairie dogs and gently washes them with baby shampoo. Sometimes she takes them outside for the drier version of bathtime, a roll in the dirt.

While most people would be content with a dog or a cat, Matl keeps these animals, she said. Matl said she loves the little creatures and even credits prairie dogs with helping save her daughter's life.

"I want to be sure they never become extinct," she said, adding that she is upset the animals are being sold at flea markets in Texas. Matl hopes to breed her prairie dogs in captivity to insure survival of the species.

Officials with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department say the number of black - tailed prairie dogs, Cynomies adovicianus, has dwindled, but that they are not on the endangered species' list. Federal law protects endangered species.

Matl, 59, is an animal lover who often wears a prairie dog pin in her blouse and a bird pendant around her neck.

At home, in addition to prairie dogs, she keeps parrots, parakeets, turtles and dogs. People in Matl's Rockdale neighborhood, 60 miles northeast of Austin, know her as the woman who rides her bike with a parrot on the handle bars.

But her greatest loves are her prairie dogs. She has gone to great lengths to capture them for pets and protect them from ranchers angry about damaged equipment and horses injured from stepping in prairie dogs' holes.

The Matl family first took in a family of prairie dogs when one of their daughters, Rita, then 8, had a serious, rare nerve condition.

In 1960, Matl said, she drove her daughter from Belton to McKenzie State Park to see the animals. Her daughter tearfully asked for prairie dogs, Matl said. A parks official suggested Matl get permission from the girl's doctor to keep them as pets.

The girl's doctor wrote an informal prescription for prairie dogs. A year later, the family got six pairs and has since taken care of six or severi more sets.

"I know in my heart if it weren't for the prairie dogs, we wouldn't have Rita today;' Matl said, adding that her daughter is now grown aud has a 16 year - old daughter of her own.

Rita Matl Cavaness, 39, said the animals played an important part in her life and the lives of her two sisters, Karen Bott and Olivia Albright.

"They're a very interesting animal to watch," Cavaness said. "You can't

help but be attracted to them. They're very affectionate and loving to each other."

Not everyone feels as Matl 's family does. Some people say the animals are a nuisance, and they complain the animals are flea - ridden and carry disease.

Matl said she has picked up shotgun shells and fish hooks near prairie dog colonies. People not only shoot at the small animals, they sometimes try to snare the prairie dogs with the hooks, she said.

"A lot of people hate them," she said. "They will throw bottles at them.

People have tried to flush them out with water. It irks me that people don't respect our wildlife."

In the front yard of her home, Matl recently showed off her four prairie dogs in rabbit cages. She fed the youngest prairie dog from a bottle.

The furry animal grabbed the bottle with its inch - long claws, sucking the milic The prairie dog she called Chen Chen threw back its head with a quick jerk and let out a yelp, a signal that strangers are near. She has had this batch for only a week. and they are still shy of humans. The three animals huddled together and nuzzled each other.

"They're like children," she said, trying to get another to come out of its cage. "When you want them to perform, they won't."

Over the years the family has learned that a prairie dog will eat most anything low in protein, including cookies and fruit. The animals live between seven and nine years, Matl said.

"They live in a colony and every one of them digs his own private hole,'' Matl said. "They have a huge hole for a community room and when they see danger one hollers."

Matl said the key to taming the wild animals is giving them plenty of kindness and handling them every day.

She took Xing out of its cage and scratched it on the head. The animal closed its eyes and was very still. But, Matl warned, while prairie dogs are cute, they also bite if not handled correctly.

"They are a wonderful outlet," she said. "By having them as pets where people can see them, this might cause people to respect them."

Chinese Visitor Likes Life In U.S.

By Mike Brown Rockdale Reporter The first American Wei Chen - Gie met in the United States didn't act the way Chinese newspapers and television predicted.

Wei, a 60 -year - old resident of the People's Republic of China, was on his way to visit his brother in Texas, and his "pen - pal," Johnnie Matl of Rockdale, when he found himself alone and confused in the San Francisco airport.

"I needed to call my brother in Tyler," he recalled, "and I couldn't figure out how to use the telephone. So I finally just asked someone if he would help me call this number I had written down."

It was a leap of faith for Wei. Since 1949, when mainland China fell to

"The man used his own phone credit card, dialed the number and gave me the phone," Wei said, "I didn't know at the time that he was paying for my call. I told my brother what had happened and he told me I should pay the man five dollars."

"I looked for him but he was gone," Wei said. "I never even found out his name. That was the first thing that happened to me in America." `SNOW PIGS' -- It's been an interesting life of Wei, who survived the Japanese invasion of China in World War II, civil war, Mao's Cultural Revolution and much personal grief and now finds himself visiting Mrs. Matl and her husband, Johnny.

How did a Chinese technician and engineer get to know a Rockdale couple?

Prairie dogs.

Wei became interested in preserving China's prairie dog population during the late 1970s and began writing letters to Chinese officials.

"They are called 'snow pigs' in China," he said. "I found out that over two - thirds of them had been killed. They use them for fun, even for meat."

Wei, an avid reader of American books and magazines, had contacted McKenzie State Park near Lubbock on another matter earlier and when a Chinese professor asked Wei if he knew anything about taming prairie dogs he wrote the park officials again.

If anyone knows how to train prairie dogs it's Mrs. Matl. "I've been raising them for more than 20 years," she said. "The folks at the park found out about me and put me in touch with Mr. Wei." The two began a pen - pal correspondence that has lasted six years.

FAMILY ODYSSEY -- The story of how Wei got to come to America has one of those "fact is stranger than fiction" plots.

It started when his brother, Wei Chen - Huou, left Shanghai and went to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

During that period, Chiang Kai Shek and his forces also fled to the island of Taiwan and established the Republic of China there while Mao's communist army consolidated its control of the mainland.

What followed was 25 years of cold war which separated many families, including the Weis.

"I could not communicate with my brother in any way," Wei said. "And my family and I suffered simply because I had a relative in Taiwan. I was passed over for promotions and for 26 years my wife had to live and work in a different town from me."

But still, Wei taught himself English by listening to television programs and American and British radio, especially the Voice of America.

Meanwhile, Wei Chen - Huou (his brother) had been working with the American Navy in Taiwan. When the U.S. changed its position on the two Chinas in 1979 much of the American Naval presence went home.

And Wei Chen - Huou went with them.

"One day we got a post card," Wei recalled. "It was the first time we had heard from my brother in 30 years. He was in Texas."

Now known as "Willy," Wei Chen Huou was working as a registered

nurse in a Tyler hospital. A year ago he invited his brother to come to Texas for a visit. After months of chopping through red tape that trip came to pass.

CARS AND PEOPLE -- Wei's first impression of Texas: "Where are all those people going in all those cars?"

One of those cars contained his niece, nephew and the brother he hadn't seen in almost four decades. "It was 39 years to the very day," he said.

"It was about 11 at night when I saw him. We were so excited we talked until after the sun came up.

After a long visit in Tyler, Wei wanted to come to Rockdale and look up the Matls. It was another emotional reunion. One of Wei's granddaughters is named "Johnnie" in honor of Mrs. Matl.

Rockdale is the smallest town Wei has ever visited for any length of time.

He is from Wuxi, a city of 800,000.

"I like it," he said. "The neighbors all seem to be very close." Wei also had ridden his bicycle around Rockdale. "In Tyler they were afraid I would get run over," he laughed.

Wei knows his time in the United States is coming to an end. "We have tried to get him a temporary green card so he could get some work here and support himself," Mrs. Matl said.

"But they've told us there is just no way."

"He can fix about anything to do with electronics and he's very helpful," she said. "We do think he's going to be allowed to renew his visa and that will let him stay in the U.S. a little longer."

STILL A CHRISTIAN -- Wei was baptized by American Baptist missionaries in 1947 but church - going for all Chinese stopped two years later with the communist victory.

"I became a Christian back then. It was the happiest time in my life," he said. "Through all those years I was still a Christian even though there were no churches and no pastors in China."

Wei resumed his church attendance Easter Sunday in Tyler.

"I hope Americans realize what you have here," he said. "You have democracy and freedoms. You can do things Chinese cannot do."

"If you could only realize what Chinese people's life is like. I think then you must appreciate what you have," he said. "Our Lord, Our God is good."

There's another side to the difference between the two countries.

"The first thing that comes to mind about America is that you have running water 24 hours a day," he said. "We have one faucet for 10 families.

"He once asked about our power bill," Mrs. Matl said. "We told him we had used 1,500 kilowatts that month. He told us that his family -himself, his wife and mother - in - law -- use 6 to 8 kilowatts a month." `MADE IN CHINA' -- Wei has some other happy memories of America. "I like hamburgers, pizza, Mexican food, hot dogs and French fries," he grinned.

It's been a two - way culinary exchange. "He is a tremendous cook," Mrs. Matl said.

Next trip over -- and Wei believes there will be a next trip -- he plans to bring his wife- and perhaps granddaughter Johnnie.

"I intend to see her," Mrs. Matl said. "I feel like she's one of my grandkids, too. It's such a funny world we live in. Right after she was born I wanted to get together some nice American baby clothes to send her."

"I had them all ready to go when I happened to look at one of the labels for some reason, she recalled. "Guess what I was sending her? 'Made in China!"

What is a case?

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvni pad— answers the questions: KDO— who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO— what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex.: KDO tam chodi? Karel tam ide.
