District I Youth Participate In Burleson County Parade On Saturday, June 3, 1989 at 10 a.m., four youth from District I participated in the 1989 Burleson County Fair Parade. Each youth club in District I was represented.

Those participating were District I Queen for 1988 Trudy Krenek from Dime Box Lodge No. 13, District I King for 1988 Brian Faust from Bryan Lodge No. 39; Mindy Suehs from New Tabor Lodge No. 17, and Rebekah See from Snook Lodge No. 9 carried the banner.

Trudy and Brian had the easy job of riding on the back of a convertible that was driven by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. District I Director Andrew Vavra rode along.

Mindy and Rebekah walked the entire parade route, approximately 20 city blocks, that took 45 minutes. Mr. Vavra promised both of these girls a foot massage after the parade was overwith.

District I is very proud of these fine youth members and looks forward to participating in next year's parade.

zechoslovakia Remembered To B Presented Throughout Texas

Burleson County Fair Participants.

Czechoslovakia Remembered is a special event of the Bringing The World To Texas travel film series, is a one - hour color motion picture that was produced by travel adventurer, cinematographer Clay Francisco.

This film was made in the spring of 1968 during the brief period known as "Prague Spring." Two days after Francisco finished filming, the Soviet tanks moved in and "Prague Spring" ended. This program then is the latest travelogue that has been made by an American in Czechoslovakia. The program is narrated "live" and "in person" by Allan Longacre, the executive director of The Arts Exchange and founder of the Bringing The World To Texas series. According to Longacre, one of the unique aspects of the travelogue is that it is a "live" performance. The speaker is right with the audience in the auditorium.

The date of July 1 - 2 mark the centennial of one of our fraternal societies of Texas -- the KJT with headquarters in La Grange We wish them a successful centennial and future.

You surely have noticed the ad on page 14 in the last 3 issues about the Folkloric Ensemble the PODLUZAN from Bieclav, Moravia in Czechoslovakia which appeared June 30, July 1 and July 2 in La Grange. (Refer to their schedule on page 14 of this issue) ***

July 1, 1897 --- Ninety - two years have passed since the founding of the SPJST Society. It was in La Grange (Fayette County), Texas that an organization for mutual assistance of its members of their families in time of sickness and death was instituted. It was then that the founders of our Society constructed, planned and began building the institution and started a fraternal system which today serves so completely the home and family interests.

Those were pioneer days on this continent. In the West still were heard the pounding hoofs of the oxen drawing the wagon trains; the teeming cities of the plains and the mighty granaries were still far distant -- life insurance was in its infancy; its general application and social importance was only commencing to be realized.

While we enter this anniversary month of July, we are reminded that our Society has indeed an enviable record of service.

Time, practices and procedures change as the years go by but the fundamental of human nature do not change. The basic principles of the SPJST --- Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood -- on which our organization was founded, are still as close to the people's hearts, the hearts of its members, as they were 92 years ago.

Meanwhile reminiscing on the lessons of the past, we advance toward the future with great hope, faith and vision.

On this anniversary, let our local communities know more about the outstanding fraternal and life insurance services of the SPJST at various affairs by reviewing the progress of the Society since 1897.

We are on the threshold of a new era of progress for the SPJST. For a real 92nd birthday gift to the Society, let us follow the program below during the remainder of this year.

Give greater support to the 1989 membership contest and youth clubs.

Show an increased participation and leadership in community affairs.

Those of you, who can, organize new youth clubs throughout the jurisdiction of our SPJST. Take more part in the Society's new program of fraternal activities that are coordinated by your local fraternal activities' coordinators (FACs).

Each and every member is invited to join hands with us in putting this program of brotherhood into practice.

By doing so, the SPJST will march forward to an outstanding era. A great, new spirit of fraternalism and

brotherly understanding will be born to guide and protect us, while we move forward. Remember, in eight years, we will celebrate our Society's centennial year! ***

June 25th --- Adult and youth members from Cottonwood, Dallas, Elk, Ennis, Fort Worth and Waco lodges gathered for another District III YAD at Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

Activities started on time according to Sister Bessie Petr who has coordinated all the competition entries with the assistance of Sister Rosemary Banik; both serve as DYC and assistant DYC, respectively.

After a good noon meal, Sister Petr called the program to order and formalities were performed before the contests got underway.

Serving as Mistress of Ceremonies, Gladys Yates, youth leader of Lodge 66, introduced Home Office representatives, namely, District III Director Sid Pokladnik and State Youth Director Claudette Reese as well as Editor R.J. Sefcik, plus other District III officers. She had a heavy task ahead of her, however, she conducted her duties remarkably well.

While judging was underway in the Arts and Crafts Department, the audience was entertained by two circles of youth composed of Juniors and Teens from Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 performing the national folk dance "Ceskd Beseda" in their colorful costumes. They will be qualified to compete at State YAD and we wish to commend these young folks along with their leaders who strive to preserve the Czech heritage. Our hats off to all of you!

Other entertainment numbers included pantomime, recitation, tap dancing, dramatizing, singing and instrumental solos. Lodge 84 achieved all the Individual and Junior - Senior Group Talent entries, plus several craft entries as well as the Scrapbook and Poster; also the Royal Court, namely, Queen Barbara Reznik, Duchess Kelli Kopecky, King Bryan Becan and Duke Chris Coker. What a happy group!

Lodge 6, Cottonwood brought home their usual District III "Top" Junior and Teenager of the Year titles achieved by Tammi and Kevin Dobecka, children of very active parents, Bobby and Peggy Dobecka.

Of course, there were other "first" place entrants in craft divisions from Lodges 6, 25, 66, 84 and 92 who will also be competing at state level.

From our observations, there were many individuals who worked behind the scene to help make this eventful day another success, and sincere appreciation is extended to the host Lodge 25 officers and members for making the day comfortable.

Our congratulations to all the entrants in District III and good luck is wished to the winners who will "tryout" in State Royalty at Seaton Lodge 47 - Saturday, August 26th and in State YAD at Mayborn Convention Center - Sunday, August 27th. We look forward to seeing all the winning categories at state level. ***

Due to an oversight, Sister Ruth Hanus' name was omitted in the cutline of the Flag Raising Ceremony held at the Supreme Lodge recently.

Sister Hanus did an outstanding job in leading the assembly in singing our National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" and "America The Beautiful". ***

SPJST Sponsoring Drive To. Raise Funds For Renovation Of Battleship Texas And Czech Chair Dear Officers and Members: The Supreme Lodge approved the proposal to help raise funds to restore and renovate the Battleship "Texas" and also at the same time to raise donations for the Czech Chair. Both projects are tax - deductible contributions.

"To establish a major new Czech Studies Program in our state, THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS (CEFT) is conducting a drive to fund an Endowed Educational Chair at a major Texas university. The establishment of the Chair will ensure that funds will always be available so that Czech language could always be taught."* "Since the early years of this century, the Czech youth of this state have had the opportunity to study the language and culture of their forebears at state universities. Czech classes have served to bring generations together and foster a love and understanding of our immigrant ancestors and their values."* Battleship Texas is now a memorial ship owned by Texas and was called the Flagship. Battleship Texas played a very important part in World War II and was used in many battles.

Battleship Texas has 150,000 visitors each year, but now is in critical need of major repair and must be towed into the shipyards for repair. The complete cost of restoring the battleship is estimated to cost 13.4 million and all the Texans are asked for their help in raising these funds.

Battleship Texas helped save our country and now we need to save it, won't you help?

We are hoping to reach our goals for these projects by September 1, 1989.

We realize that, while some lodges may

have funds available, others may not, but they may want to solicit contributions from members or sponsor an activity to raise funds. In any case, we certainly hope that the effort you make in support of these projects will be richly rewarded in the benefits of fraternal "involvement."

Your lodge's goal amount is ten cents per member. The amount may be more or less. Each lodge that meets their goal(s) will have their lodge name in the Vestnik and what project(s) they supported. Individual contributors will also be recognized in the Vestnik.

The progress of this drive will be in the Vestnik. Lodge donations and individual donations are encouraged.

Donation checks should be made to SPJST and mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; Attention: Office of the President. After all contributions are collected one check will be disbursed from the Supreme Lodge to each project. Therefore, at this time, we are soliciting you and your lodge's help with these important projects.

We are asking each lodge to donate a minimum of 10 cents per member to at least one of the worthwhile projects.

If it is possible, please support both projects.

The Supreme Lodge will match each lodge's donation up to the amount of $2,500 for each project. You can be sure that we at the Supreme Lodge greatly appreciate your help.

SPJST can meet its goals only if we act on these fraternal commitments before September 1, 1989.

Let us all help keep these projects alive.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, June 11, 1989 at Mr. Gatti's at 2 p.m. with President Annie Vahalik presiding.

Pledge to the flag was led by Flag Bearer Janell Chudej. A song was sung

by Nicholas Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co - Youth Leader Evelyn, Holy.

The members present voted to have our annual Family Day in August again. After a discussion, it was decided to check into a catered meal for dinner . Evelyn Holy and Gaynell Chudej are on the committee to check into the prices and menus of a catered meal and report to the members at the next meeting.

Family Day will be held Sunday, August 20th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville with dinner beginning at 11:30 a.m. The 50 - year members will be recognized and receive their pins. Entertainment will be provided and door prizes given.

Members and their families are invited to attend. More plans will be made at our July meeting.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gaye Galetka read correspondence that she had received; it was discussed.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report. The meeting adjourned and refreshments followed.

A reminder to all of you of our next lodge meeting which will be held Friday, July 7th at 8 p.m.

There will be a surprise supper before the meeting which will be prepared and cooked by the Robert Dobecka family and Willie Mae Schuetz. All of you are invited since there is no special place to go Friday night, so there is no excuse.

At this meeting we hope all decisions will be worked out about our annual Lodge 6 Picnic for Sunday, July 16th, by position of all the workers being accepted so we want you to please come and help out by giving the OK if you can help.

Dear Members: The regular meeting of Lodge 15 was delayed by one week because of vacations, but we had it this week. It was opened by John Hillman leading the members to the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Jo Lee Shiller welcomed our guests, namely, Dan Balusek and Lee Ann Tully. Everyone enjoyed seeing you all so come another time, again.

Brother George Pauling called the roll of officers; Dorothy Shilling and Leona Nors were absent.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved. Sister Bonnie Pruitt read a card of thanks from the Chris Spence, Jr. family.

There was also a brochure about a film on Czechoslovakia by the Austin Institute.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting were read and approved.

The Entertainment Committee will serve sandwiches for our July 16th meeting. Members are asked to bring sandwiches; the lodge will furnish chips and desserts.

Father's Day awards were in the following order: 1st - Tony Glatter and 2nd - Arthur Langlotz.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the fraternal activities' report. She asked members to keep a record of charitable and fraternal work done and bring it to the meeting each month.

She thanked Sister Emma Ceska for making new curtains for the ticket office. At the FAC meeting of the lodge, new rules were discussed.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky (State FAC) will come to one of our social nights to teach Taroky to those who wish to learn.

In the Volleyball Tournament, there will be 2 divisions -- those who spike and those teams who don't spike. The State Volleyball Tournament will be held November 4th. Those entering baking or sewing contest at the district meeting, must not be professional or do this commercially. They must be present to enter. Each lodge may send 3 teams to the State Domino and "42" Tournaments. There were 21 at the last social night. Everyone had a good time and more are encouraged to attend.

The socials are every second Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

The members may play games at the meetings if the prizes are donated and the money is given to charity.

Members are asked to bring a small gift for games.

Brother Arthur Langlotz thanked Brother George Pauling and Brother Bob Cervenka for helping set up the horseshoe pits. We now have 2 sets of horseshoes and more are needed.

Sisk List Report -- Get well cards were sent to Jewel Warhol, Bobbie Woolridge and Anna Vernetti.

Sympathy cards were sent to the A.L. Urbanovsky family and Mary Klemitchek.

We had one new member, Joseph Edward Baker.

Sister Gladys Yates gave the youth club report. They had collected and sent $247 to the restoration of Battleship Texas. The youth will help the Moody Nursing Home instead of Bellmead. The youth members are asked to bring small individual packages of crackers or cookies to the July meeting. The youth will take an overnight trip to Six Flags on August 5th and 6th and go swimming to the West Pool on July 11th. They gave slips of paper good for one can of beer to each father and two to Arthur Langlotz for hauling their cans. They also performed their talent acts; three couples performed a dance routine.

Sister Jeanette Smith made a motion that Lodge 66 send $50 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Sister Dorothy Morris.

Members celebrating birthdays in June were Jessika Tierce, Sharon Tierce, Emma Ceska, Darlene Engelke and Evelyn Seith. The birthday cake was brought by Larry Yates. David Tierce won the door prize.

President Ladis Navratil called the regular meeting to order Friday evening, June 9th at 7:30 p.m.

Flag Bearer Ed Riesner led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes of April and May meetings were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read, a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar, and thank you notes were read from 50 - year members Viola Evelyn Jezek, Lillie Emma McDonald and Georgia Navratil thanking our lodge for the 50 - year presentation and meal.

Mary Ann Zatopek gave her report -- additional insurance was sold to Robert Burleson and Meredith Johnson.

Vice President Jerry Valchar gave a report on Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA).

Our expression of sympathy to Annie Plsek on the loss of her brother.

To members convalescing, we extend wishes for a speedy recovery.

We enjoyed having members Kyle and Carla Kacir present at the June meeting.

The July meeting will be held Friday evening, July 14th at 7:30 p.m.

Minutes Of Lodge No. 88, Houston Meeting June 12, 1989 President Jerry Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Flag Bearers Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl, together with Michelle Linney carrying the Czech flag, presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Ermis announced that we had two deaths the past month, namely, Frank Amos Kadlecek and Robert C. Schindler. The membership stood for a moment of silent tribute to the departed members. Sixteen new applicants were accepted, and one transfer out was approved.

President Ermis thanked all the members for a successful "Homecoming with Splash Day," and a special thanks to Willie Wehring for his assistance in obtaining the meat and helping with the barbecue.

Fraternal activities coordinator reported among other things that a silent film "Czechoslovakia Remembered" would be narrated and shown at the Houston Jewish Community Center, 5601 South Brasewood, and stated that more would be coming out in his article in the Vestnik. Watch for its date. This should be a lovely way to spend an evening.

Youth Club Secretary Marlene Migl gave a glowing report of the youth activities for the past month, including the LIT Retreat at Camp Val Verde in McGregor, Texas, where she, Darlene Migl, Angela Clayton, Michelle Linney, Crystal Wallace and Tommie Wallace attended.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox reported the Red Raven and Al Pierson dances very enjoyable and well attended. He reported on the upcoming dances and drew particular attention to the August 12th big Battle Dance with five hours of constant music by Lee Roy Matocha and Lee Roy Rybak. He also thanked Marian Kadlecek, Vincent Hegwood, and Irene and Ernie Lewis for running the Over and Under tables on Splash Day. Ed Miculka announced the next Men's Club meeting would be on July 11th due to the first Tuesday falling on July 4th. He also thanked all the men who helped clean the outside benches and tables prior to Splash Day. They really did look pretty -- it makes one wonder if they received all this cleaning expertise from home helping their wives. Any one of you want to answer that!

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann reported that swimming classes for elderly people are still in the works, and obtained permission to purchase a tractor or some other type of mower.

Building Committeeman Royal Warnsch together with other members of the Building Committee and the architect went over the building plans, and, after a very lengthy discussion, a vote to proceed with the building plans as submitted failed.

Marceil Malak, for the Scholarship Committee, gave its report, and all the rules and recommendations were unanimously approved.

Helen Hegwood announced that Mildred Holeman was the Number One Sales Representative in District V for the month of May, and asked that Tim Janak be appointed a sales representative from Lodge 88. Upon

motion by Louis Hanus, seconded by Viola Cox, it carried. Tim Janak was appointed sales representative.

Helen, then, recognized the guests, led the membership in singing "Happy Birthday" to the June celebrants and also announced the names of nine couples celebrating anniversaries in June.

Following the drawing for door prizes, the meeting adjourned.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury Report Upon the completion of routine business, at the Danbury Lodge 139 meeting on June 4th, President Vincent Hechler introduced Brent Vrazel, the 1989 recipient of the Lodge 139 scholarship.

Brent is the son of Lewis and Pat Vrazel and graduated from Danbury High School in early June.

He is the third son of Lewis and Pat to receive the scholarship, being preceded by brothers Jarrod in 1987 and Jason in 1988.

Brent was presented with a plaque

by Past Secretary Tommie Lostak.

Brent plans to enter college this fall.

A social was held following adjournment of the meeting.

News From Lodge Rozkiiet No. 172, Pasadena Dear Members: This will be my first newsletter in some time because we have just returned from 3 weeks vacationing in Czechoslovakia. The "we" I am referring to, are 8 people who live in El Campo or originally came from El Campo. They are Ted Dressler and Edmund Kana, who live in El Campo, Ed Rod and wife, Elsie, from Beaumont, Victor Peter and wife, Lillia Mae, from Pasadena and Vicki and Jerry Dressler from Houston. We flew from Houston to Vienna, Austria and rented cars and drove into Czechoslovakia. Victor and Lillia Mae first went into Slovakia and then covered the rest of the nation. Ed and Elsie Rod stayed in Brno and then covered most of Moravia before going to Bratislava and Budapest. The rest of us stayed in Brno with our cousins and made trips to Praha, Piibor, Frenstat, Vlachovice, Kralovice, Nov Hrozenkov, Roinov and several other villages. This is a trip we will remember always.

Our regular monthly meeting for June was held on Wednesday, June 28th, with 35 members and all officers present. Reports were given and accepted as read.

The main topic on business was the upcoming benefit that Lodge 172 will sponsor on August 6th. It is called the Mark Kilroy Benefit and all proceeds on that day will go to combat the drug problem. Brother Irving Theiss and Sister Bobbye Johnson are co chairpersons for this affair and are seeking all members of Lodge 172 to participate and make it a success. The lodge is requesting donations of prizes for drawing that day. This is a very good and fraternal gesture and please help in some way.

Lodge 172 Youth Club also met on this day prior to the lodge meeting. A beautiful U.S. flag was presented to the youth club by the American Legion Post of Pasadena. The youth club was just recently reactivated and will be looking for some more members.

Vicki and Jerry Dressler wish to thank Joe Krenek, Irving Theiss, Tommy Wallace, Esther Kowalski and others for operating the bar and rentals during our absence.

Our next work day is Monday, July 10th and next lodge meeting is Wednesday, July 26th at 7:30 p.m.

Ladies' Circle Of Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth The Ladies' Circle met June 13, 1989 at 10 a.m. President Betty Billington called the meeting to order.

Betty read "I said a Prayer for You" which was very lovely. Then, Betty mentioned that one of our members was honored with a plaque the week before by the Johnson County Home Demonstration Club. The member was Dona Milek Hubenak, who has been active in the Ladies' Circle and also served as president. A member of Lodge 92, she has served as treasurer of SVPS fire insurance of the Fort Worth lodge, treasurer of the Grandview Garden Club and is an active member of the Johnson County Home Demonstration Club. Dona lives on a farm in Johnson County, and still raises cattle, grows prize winning flowers, keeps a vegetable garden as well as cooks, bakes, cans and freezes her home - grown harvest, also does a lot of sewing (made quilts for all 7 grandchildren) plus donated quilts to various organizations. Dona is a very active person.

We had one new member, Ida Jarrett, daughter of Tuna Meislohn.

Welcome, Ida and hope you enjoy the Circle as much as we do.

Then, the minutes of our last meeting were read by Secretary Clara Marchioni and approved as read.

Communication was also read by our secretary, a thank you note from.

Lodge 92 for the $500 donated to the lodge from the Ladies' Circle, also a letter from the Czech Circle of Dallas, inviting us to visit the Circle in Dallas on Friday, August 18th, so the Ladies' Circle plans on going to Dallas by bus.

Mary Ann Gibson will check on the bus.

The door prize was won by Clara Cohen and was donated by Rosie Zalesak, a lovely set of glasses.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families of Mary Dunlap, a member of the Ladies' Circle, who passed away and also the Frances Blake family; her sister, Lillian Skrasek, who passed away. May they rest in peace and may their memory live among us. Get well wishes also go to all who may be sick. Get well, soon!

Our hostesses for July 11th meeting will be Betty Loyd, Marie Prill, Mary Powers and Maggie Konecny. So come and join us for a good time. Be sure and bring a covered dish or dessert.

Lodge System

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina y do so many fraternal organizations, including the SPJST, hold their functions and meetings in places called "lodges," "lodge rooms" or "lodge - halls?" The question is quite intriguing. The answer may well lay in the meaning of the word "lodge" itself. The modern English word "lodge" is derived from the Middle English word "loge," which in turn was of Germanic origin and came to English from Old French.

It is a kin to the Old High German word "louba," meaning porch and the Old Norse word "lopt," meaning balcony or upper - room.

It was common practice for fraternal organizations and societies, during their formative years, to meet and hold their functions in rooms or halls located on the second floor of a building. The practice of meeting in an upper - room is well - over 2000 years old and was not uncommon even in Jesus Christ's day and age, for He instituted the Lord's Supper in an upper - room, and after His crucifixion His disciples, on several occasions, met in an upper - room. The beginning of the lodge system, as we know it today, goes back to Europe in the middle ages, which saw the development of organized craft guilds and gave birth to an era of bridge, castle and cathedral construction. The renaissance, which followed the late middle ages, in turn gave birth to the beginning of fraternal development outside of the membership in craft guilds.

During the middle ages, the various craft guilds were very protective of their arts, skills, talents and techniques. They only shared them with those who, in their estimation, would carry them on and preserve them according to their own unique tradition. They taught their apprentices and lesser skilled workmen in large rooms or halls on the second floor of buildings that had been constructed as storage houses for perishable goods and supplies which could not be stored outdoors at the construction sites. They felt more secure on the upper story since it made it more difficult for outsiders to eavesdrop and spy upon them. It was also easier for a guard on the second floor to observe the approach of unauthorized personnel or unwanted guests. In some cases master craftsmen lived on the second floor of the storage buildings and held schools of instruction in large adjoining rooms which also served as plan rooms for their particular craft.

Imagination concludes that after a hard day's labor, and perhaps after a hearty evening meal, a worker would announce to his family that he was "going to lodge," which meant that he was going to the upper - story meeting room to receive his next day's work assignment and/or socialize with his fellow workers. Since man is basically a social creature, it is not inconceivable. that the upper or lodge - room would, on special occasions or holidays, be

used for social functions for the workers' families as well as for the use of education of their children. After the construction project was completed, and if the storage buildings were not torn down, the second floor lodge - rooms became centers of community life and provided a place of recreation, entertainment and education for the common folk.

The ancient craft guilds were unique in that they provided care for their ill or incapacitated members, the education of their children, and that they pledged themselves to care for the widows and orphans of deceased members. Modern day union halls are a reflection and continuation of the craft lodge system of the middle ages.

The concept of fraternity, mutual and education that assistance characterized the ancient craft guilds was soon emulated by those who were not members of the guilds, but who recognized their intrinsic value.

As the fraternal, non - guild lodges grew, they joined together with other lodges who had similar interests and formed loose confederations. These loose confederations gave rise to governing bodies or Supreme Lodges, which became protective, administrative organizations for their fraternities. The lodge system or concept has been adopted by many modern fraternal organizations, including the SPJST. Although no longer on the second floor, our lodges usually have rooms for meetings, instruction and entertainment. The members of the SPJST are bound together with a sense of mutual assistance and brotherhood. They have pledged themselves to take care of the old and disabled, much of which is accomplished through affordable life insurance and annuity programs and the operation of two rest homes.

Sewing Circle

The Ennis Sewing Circle met May 11th and June 8th. The attendance for both meetings was rather low. There were several activities that took place during those months and I suppose that may have accounted for the drop in attendance.

President Sadie Kubin presided at both meetings. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited at each meeting. All the officers were present at both meetings. Each officer gave her report, which was approved as read.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of George Vrana, son of Sister Annie Vrana.

Our visitors were Ernest Huff, Bob Zvolanek, Loretta and Patty Laza and Julie and Michael Fowler.

Sympathy card was sent to Sister Annie Vrana. Get well card was sent to Sister Millie Vytopil. A get well card and money gift were sent to Sister Albie Nesuda.

A thank you was received from Joe Hdudek for the flowers for Sister Agnes Houdek's funeral service. Sister Albie Nesuda thanked the Circle for the get well card and gift. All the sisters who worked at the Polka Festival were thanked.

Congratulations to "Chigger" Bartosh, dog of Mrs. Bartosh of Waco, Texas. He was the winner of the Polka Festival quilt Lucky dog!

Quilt quilted in May was for Sister Stasie Hejny and in June for Sister Rose Bednar.

by Sister Stacie Hejny. Lucky winner was Sister Alene Skrivanek. There were three door prizes brought in May. I failed to get the names of the donors.

So, I will take care of this next time.

It was announced that the Czechoslovakian Folklore Ensemble, the PODLUZAN, will be at the Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas, Texas on Friday, July 7th.

The Ellis County Czech Heritage Society has been formed in Ennis, Texas. One can learn about his or her genealogy, that is, -trace one's "roots." Sounds very interesting!

Sister Millie Vytopil is staying in Houston with her daughter and son in - law, Emilie and Frank Slovak.

Congratulations to Sister Vivian and Johnny Vrana who became grandparents of a grandson, named Jonathan; great - grandparents are Sister Leona and Joe Jurica and proud parents are Cindy and Frank Kubena.

Sister Alice and Tom Roberts became great - grandparents of their first great - grandchild, Joshua Warren Roberts.

Congratulations to our 1989 High School graduates, Richard Tupy, Stacey and Tracey Wychopen, grandchildren of Sister Vallie and Wesley Tupy and Sheila Roberts, granddaughter of Sister Alice and Tom Roberts.

Mildred Tupy Baker and husband Bill Baker from Anaheim, California visited relatives in Ennis and Dallas in May. They have purchased a home in Ennis and, before too very long, they will become residents of Ennis.

The fourth Tupy reunion was held June 3, 1989. There were 38 present, about 20 less than last year. There were four new additions since the 1988 reunion.

Our next meeting will be July 13th.

Film Presents Czechoslovakia

Travel

"Czechoslovakia Remembered," is a one - hour, color motion picture will be presented Thursday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cultural Activities Center's Mayborn Auditorium in Temple.

Filmmaker Clay Francisco produced the travelogue in 1968 during the brief period known as "Prague Spring" when the Czechoslovakian government attempted to democratize the country.

Allan Longacre, executive director of the Arts Exchange, Austin, will narrate the travel film. Longacre founded the "Bringing the World to Texas" series that presents travelogues in Temple, Denton, Dallas, Houston, New Braunfels, Round Rock, Victoria, Waco and Wichita Falls.

"Czechoslovakia Remembered" takes viewers to Prague and scenes of a 500 - year - old cafe, Wenceslaus Square, the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and the Old Town Square. The film also shows Konopiste Castle, the old walled city of Tabor, the resort city of Karlovy Vary, and the memorial city of Lidice.

Tickets for his special presentation are $3 for the general public, $2 for CAC members and 1989 - 90

"Bringing the World to Temple" series ticket holders.

This month's Vestnik project is courtesy of Donald Marek. Donald is a member of Lodge 117 Youth Club.

Of the fourteen villages that bore the name Cermna, my roots can be traced to approximately the year 1304 in the small town of Horni Cermna, Czechoslovakia. This village still stands today near the borders' of the Czech provinces of Moravia and Bohemia. Many of my ancestors who lived there were butchers by profession.

At the second half of the nineteenth century many inhabitants of Cermna began to emigrate to the United States because there was no industry and they could not make a living from out of date farming methods on poor fields in the mountains.

In the nineteenth century my great - grandfather, Vincent Marek, emigrated from Czechoslovakia. He was the fourth child of six children of my great - grandfather Hynek Marek and my great - great grandmother Terezie Marek.

Vincent Marek (born 1848) was married to Victoria Bulova (born 18 November 1848) in 1869. They decided to leave Horni Cermna, and Vincent Czechoslovakia.

Victoria settled in Manor, to raise a an Vincent became family.

American citizen in 1891. In 1894 he

bought 262 acres of land east of Granger, Texas and continued farming. During their first decade in America Vincent and Victoria had four more children, the first of which was my grandfather, Charles Marek.

Charles Marek (born 1882) married Ludmila Muzny (born 1885) in 1909. Ludmila had emigrated from Palkovice na Moravia, Czechoslovakia to America in 1891. They had twelve children all of whom were born in Granger, Texas. From the time they were married onward they lived and worked on the family farm until the great depression.

In 1941 they moved to Robstown and continued farming until they retired. Charles and Ludmila later moved to Taylor, Texas.

Of those twelve children, William J. Marek (my father) was born in April 1931 and married Kathryn Jurica in 1971. My father recalls that as a boy during the depression, the family still farmed with mules and by hand and traveled to the nearby town on a mule drawn wagon. From my grandmother's side my great - grandfather, Charles Holasek, was an immigrant from Czechoslovakia and came to America in the early twentieth century. ***

From The District Youth Counselors Camp Activities Scheduled For District I

Dear Campers, District I will be camping soon and I am sure all of you are looking forward to camp. Arrival time is between 2 and 3 p.m. on Monday, July 17th with departure at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 20th.

One of our camp crafts will be personalized T - shirts, so make sure you bring a new, plain, light colored T - shirt to decorate. (White color works the best).

We will be having special activities each night at camp including a Halloween party, a campfire and a hayride. Be sure to bring a costume for the Halloween party and jeans for the hayride.

This year's camp theme is FLIGHT. We will be doing several activities pertaining to flight including decorating kites and having a kite flying contest. Also planned is a special movie on this topic.

Put a big smile on and we will see you at camp.

District H YAD At Holland Dear Members: The time is almost here for that very important day which all our District II youth look forward to: YAD. On Sunday, July 9, 1989, the Holland Lodge No. 80 will be filled with youth from all over the district competing for titles in talent, Beseda, royalty and crafts, which will send them on their way to state competition.

I hope each of you, as friends and SPJST members, from all districts will come out to see our many talented youth. Your presence on this day will show our youth how supportive and proud we all are of the great SPJST Youth Program our Society is so fortunate to have.

Holland SPJST lodge is located south of Holland off Highway 95 on FM 2268 East.

Please make note of the registration time. REGISTRATION WILL BE HELD FROM 11:00 to 12:00. Judging begins at 12:15 p.m. Workers need to arrive at 10:30 a.m.

The lodge will have available the sale of sandwiches and snacks for those of you arriving early. The evening meal will consist of ham, potatoes, green beans, peaches, tea or coffee. You may purchase meal tickets for $3.50.

I look forward to seeing all of you at YAD on July 9th.

IV Camp News

District

This year District IV will try its wings and camp on its own. We will be going to Camp Paluxy in Bluff Dale, about 8 miles northeast of Stephenville, Texas.

The camping session will begin July 17th at 11 a.m. We will do all of the

usual "camp" things until around 10 a.m. on the 19th, when we will depart for Six Flags. We have a fun schedule planned with many new and different things to do, so be sure to be there!

Things to bring: 1) Bedding: Sheets, pillow and light cover or sleeping bag 2) Swim suit and towel 3) Towels and wash cloths 4) Toilet articles (toothbrush, soap, brush, etc.)

5) Comfortable, casual clothes and underclothes; a change for each day (Please mark the items with your name for identification) 6) Large garbage bag for dirty laundry 7) Comfortable shoes 8) Money for snacks (Cokes, ice cream, candy to be sold by the camp twice each day) 9) Optional items: Flashlight, sunscreen, cap or hat, camera, insect repellent Please try to keep your luggage to a minimum since we will be traveling on to Arlington; you may wish to pack your camp items separately from your Six Flags baggage, so we will have a minimum of unloading once we get to the motel.

Fame City's golf course was a favorite for the Juniors from Lodge No. 39, Bryan.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Prepare For Annual Picnic Dear Readers, The youth club's meeting was held on June 16, 1989 with a fair attendance.

District III Youth Achievement Day was held on June 25th at Lodge No. 25 in Ennis.

The annual Lodge 6 picnic will be held on July 16th. The youth club will have games, cake walk and fish pond, we will need helpers and items for our games, cakes for cake walk and fish pond.

Cakes were donated to the West Rest Haven for their Birthday Party which was held on June 7th.

The youth club also gave gifts to fathers on Father's Day. Our club members worked on the scrapbook and played games.

Dear Members: The Lodge 66 Youth Club had their meeting June 18, 1989. We had 10 youth and 5 adults present.

District III YAD will be Sunday, June 25, 1989; by the time you read this letter, YAD will be over.

July 20, 21, 22 and 23 will be camp at Camp Val Verde. If you have not turned in your camp form, please do so now. We are all excited about camp and looking forward to it.

On July 11, we will have a swimming party at the West Pool; after swimming, we will have a picnic.

The youth club will start doing charity projects for the Moody Nursing Home in Moody, Texas. This nursing home has a need for our help and we are going to help as much as we can.

The youth had a Father's Day Program for the fathers of our lodge.

The youth presented each father with a gift.

We had a bike - a - thon in April for the restoration of the Battleship Texas; the total amount sent to the SPJST Supreme Lodge was $247. I want to thank each youth and parent who participated in the project. We had a great time and enjoyed the bike riding.

The birthday cake was brought by Larry Yates. The door prize was won

by Sandra Trickett and Brian Tierce.

The highlight of the summer trip for Lodge No. 39 was eating at "Hard Rock Cafe."

Fame City; some of the fun things we enjoyed were skating, bowling, miniature golf, Lazer Maze, Whirleyball, Treasure Island and Flash Flight. Then, with everyone starving, we found a pizza but and enjoyed all the pizza we could eat.

The highlight of the trip was Sunday when we found the "Hard Rock Cafe" and ate lunch there. The place was very nice and the food was great!

Well the fun is all over and hard work begins now on YAD. We also elected officers for the following year: President -- Brian Faust, Vice President -- Sherri Massey, Secretary -Donna Luza, Treasurer -- Grant Faust, Historian -- Billy Wolf.

Lodge 39 Bryan Youth Held Many Projects Dear Readers, Lodge No. 39 Youth Club has been very busy with fund - raisers so we could go on our summer trip. We worked hard at bake sales and car washes. We would like to thank all of our parents for their help and support.

Our summer trip was a weekend in Houston. We stayed at the La Quinta Inn and enjoyed the swimming pool there. We spent our day (Saturday) at

After many years of discussion and waiting, Lodge 185 feels very confident that finally the dream of SPJST purchasing and building their own camp facilities (Family Recreational Area - FRA), will become a reality at last. A facility that will not only benefit our youth, but, also a place where districts can have family outings such as District VII has, and Domino Tournaments, Volleyball Tournaments, and many more SPJST sponsored activities can be held.

With sports being a major part of her life, Melissa is a member of the Varsity teams in Cross Country, volleyball, basketball, tennis and track. She has been a Varsity cheerleader for the past 2 years and will be a member of this year's squad.

Her hobbies include dancing, swimming, reading, working with children, and participating in sports.

After graduation from high school, Melissa plans to attend Texas A&M University. One of her goals is to continue studies and activities to assist her in teaching and coaching.

Dear Readers, Sunday, June 25 District III YAD was held in Ennis at Lodge No. 25. I entered in Foods, Pictorial Arts and Talent in ages 10 to 12. I won first place in Pictorial Arts and third place in Talent.

I also placed first from our lodge in Junior Group Points. It was a lot of fun and I can't wait to go to State YAD. I was happy to get to talk to the editor of the Vestnik.

Lodge No. 9, Snook Crowned BCF Queen Melissa Dawn Victorick was recently named the 1989 Burleson County Fair Queen. She is the sixteen - year - old daughter of Donnie and Janice Victorick of Snook. She is an active member of the SPJST Lodge No. 9 Youth Club and is currently serving as vice president of the club.

Melissa is also the past 1987 - 88 SPJST State Queen and had the honor of being named Little Miss Burleson County as a four - year - old in 1977.

Dear Members, Lodge No. 39 went on our summer trip to Houston, Texas on June 10th and 11th. We rented three hotel rooms and spent the night. We went to Fame City where we skated, bowled and did many other things.

Our next meeting was set for July 2, 1989 at 2 p.m. I was hoping to see everyone there and practice your talent.

88 Houston YC Discuss Many Activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Lodge 88 Youth Club held their monthly meeting on June 7, 1989 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Re - elected President Darlene Migl presided over the meeting.

Sergeant - at - Arms Julie Cayton led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. All remained standing for a moment of silence.

Next, everyone recited the Youth Club Pledge and sang the SPJST Fraternity Song.

Then, Secretary Marlene Migl read the roll call of officers. All officers (President Darlene Migl, Vice President Michelle Linney, Secretary Marlene Migl, Angela Clayton, Reporter Melissa Havemann and Sergeant -at - Arms Julie Cayton) were present. She also read the register, there were 9 members, not including the officers. They were Amanda Havemann, Tommie Wallace, Cindy Groendes, Crystal Wallace, Brian Havemann, Julio Gloria, Angela Gloria, Senony Porter and Christine Porter.

Secretary Marlene Migl, then, read the minutes from our previous meeting (May 3rd). There were no corrections or additions to the minutes. There was no correspondence.

Next, Treasurer Angela Clayton gave her report, she announced that we made $58.50 on our first June 1st hot dog sale. She also reminded everyone that this was the day to pay your dues of $3 per person.

At this meeting, we were very excited to welcome 3 new members to

10/VESTNIK-Wednesday, July 5, 1989 our club, namely, Shannan McGee (age 13) who attended Immanuel Bethleham Lutheran, but will be in 9th grade at Waltrip next year; also, we have Jennifer WeIfl, who is 7 and is attending St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. Finally, we had new member Carrie Kadlecek, who is 12, and attended Clifton Middle School. We are all very glad to have you three as members, and I welcome you to the club. There were no visitors.

Next, President Darlene Migl asked for committee reports. First, Social Committee Chairman Cindy Groendes told all of us that we were going, to have a pool party on June 21st, from 6 to 8 p.m., at our local lodge pool.

Plans were also for refreshments for all, and details were to go out to all of us later. Membership Chairman Lillian Clayton was not here. Telephone Chairman Tommie Wallace had no report. Next, Crystal Wallace reported to all about the Scrapbook Committee.

She said that the one for 1988 - 89 is coming along real well and that everyone is just going to love it. She also asked for anyone wanting to be on next year's committee to let her know.

We elected or appointed a few more committee chairmen. First, Youth Leader Barbara Linney appointed Angela Gloria to be Sunshine (formally Special Occasions Committee chairman). Also, Carrie Kadlecek volunteered to be the Refreshment Committee chairman with Mrs. Gloria helping her. Finally, no one wanted Fund - Raising, so, the officers will fill in until some one will take the position.

Next, Youth Leader Barbara Linney gave her report. She said that she was very disappointed in the number of youth working the June 1st kitchen sale and Splash Day (Gold C coupon) sales. She told all of us that they must help out on Thursday nights because the Lodge 88 Youth Club is raising their own money to go on some kind of trip. She also discussed that our YAD cards must be in by the end of June.

DYC Marie Stayton gave her report.

She mentioned that the YAD cards must be in on time or forget it. She said that there is a lot of paper work, and her Assistant Nancy Steubing will help her. She, then, discussed her biggest item -- the "San Antonio Express Trip." She passed out forms that we are to bring with us on the 16th. We made about $2,600 for the trip. This money covers lodging and food. Everyone uses their own money for souvenirs. All youth leaders are going including plenty of chaperones.

Finally, she read off the names of all eligible to go.

DYC Stayton also stated that she along with Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing will be taking Darlene Migl, Michelle Linney, Marlene Migl, Angela Clayton, Tommie Wallace, Crystal Wallace, and James Pruitt of Lodge 172 to LIT Retreat June 9 1 1th. She said that plans for camp would be finalized with District VII DYC Maxine Pavliska.

Finally, she said that, from now on, she would keep an accurate list of active members to see who is really eligible for socials. She advised the District V youth officers to start planning a District V fall youth club social; she also is going to have an Appreciation Dinner for the parents.

Brother Gajdica was born June 14, 1914 in Tours, Texas to Charlie and Anna (Vicha) Gajdica. He was reared in the West - Tours area. He was a retired automotive assemblyman with Ford Motor Company in Dallas, where he had lived for the past 36 years. He married Agnes Gajdosik on October 19, 1938.

Brother Gajdica was a member of St. Phillip's Catholic Church in Dallas and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54 since September 26, 1933.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Gajdica of Dallas; a son, Bobby Gajdica of DeSoto; a daughter, Marcella Jones of DeSoto; two brothers, George Gajdica of DeSoto and Laddie Gajdica of Plano; four sisters, Elizabeth Urbanovsky of West, Martha Saunders and Lydia Prachyl, both of Mesquite, Christine Sefcik of Dallas and four grandchildren.

Brother Maresh was a native of Lavaca County and lived in Corpus Christi for 40 years. He was employed

by Portland Lumber and Supply and Pels and Dubose Home Builders for several years before retiring. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic

Church, Men's Club, SPJST Lodge Moravia No 23, and Catholic Life.

Survivors are his wife, Marian Maresh; two sons, James H. and Charles A. Maresh, all of Corpus Christi; a daughter, Pat Krnavek of La Grange, Texas; a sister, Pauline Zavesky of Hallettsville, Texas; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons James R. Maresh, Charles Maresh, Jr., Trey Maresh, Joe Krnavek, Jr., Peter Krnavek and Charles Krnavek.

Services for Brother John V. Sklar, Jr., of Sealy were held Wednesday, May 31st at 3 p.m. from the Etlinger Funeral Home in Sealy with Rev. Robert Kelley officiating. Interment followed in the Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.

Brother Sklar was born December 17, 1905 to the late John and Rosie (Vacula) Sklar at Frydek. He was raised in Wallis and attended Wallis Public School.

On June 28, 1927, he married Tracy Jancik in Wharton. John and Tracy moved to Wallis in 1927, where they farmed. John worked as a meat cutter in East Bernard, Wallis, Brookshire and Sealy where they moved in 1962.

Brother Sklar was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 28, East Bernard and of the First United Methodist Church in Sealy.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Tracy Sklar of Sealy; daughter and son - in - law, Delores and Francis Felcman of Rosenberg; son and daughter - in - law, Johnnie and Tillie Sklar of Houston; sisters, Mrs. Gustie Bukovan of Dallas and Mary Hejl of Rosenberg; brother and sister - in law, Adolph and Emma Sklar of Richmond; sisters-in-law, Agnes Sklar of Sealy and Lydia Sklar of East Bernard; six grandchildren and eight great - gram:tem/men.

Brother Hosek, a native of Victoria, was born December 6, 1909 to early Czech pioneers, John and Frances Leskiar Hosek. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 4146 and American Legion Post 166. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 32 for 52 years. He was retired after having been a building contractor for 25 years. He was also employed by Anchor Lumber Yard and Heinrich Lumber Yard.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Friday at McCabe - Carruth Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Hybner officiating. Burial was in Catholic Cemetery Number One under the auspices of VFW, American Legion, Catholic War Veterans and Disabled American Veterans posts.

Pallbearers were Martin Korocik, Walt Brauchle, Bernie Stumfoll, Gilbert Stefka, I.G. Matula and J.F. Zatopek, Jr. Honorary pallbearers included Steve and Emilie Gardner, Dan Zatopek, Darden Morganroth and nieces and nephews.

Survivors include two sisters, Della Riemenschneider of Corpus Christi and Annie Watkins of Houston; also by a special niece, Emilie Zatopek Gardner, who Brother Hosek and his wife raised since infancy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in •death by his wife, Emilie Zatopek Hosek on January 15, 1988; a brother, John J. Hosek, Sr. on January 9, 1964 and a sister, Albina Hosek Drozd on January 19, 1988.

He was 63 years, 5 months and 11 days of age.

Brother Pustejovsky was born December 19, 1925 to Felix L. and Mary Fabian Pustejovsky in Hobson, Texas. He attended St. Mary's School in Hobson and Karnes City High School. The day after graduation, he went to work on a Shell Oil Company exploration crew. This being a transitory job, he moved with the crew across Texas into northwestern Louisiana, thence across Louisiana to the bayou country of the Mississippi River Delta. Several years were spent there during which time he transferred from exploration to production units and was given several promotions,

Wednesday, July 5, 1989—VESTNIK/11 eventually becoming superintendent of construction. When the opportunity came to transfer to Texas unit, he did so and spent his last several years nearer home. This work also continually moved him from one job location to another.

He always considered Hobson home and any time he had a few free days he would be there. The last few years he worked, his home was also his office, where he was contacted by his superiors at Shell. An avid fisherman and huntsman, popular with his companions, prompted this epitaph from one of them, "This is the end of an era. I have never failed to thoroughly enjoy myself when with him."

Survivors include a brother and sister - in - law, Louis and Dorothy Pustejovsky of Karnes City; two nieces and their husbands, Jean (Mrs. Mark) Harrison of Austin and Kathy (Mrs. Michael) O'Connor of Allen; also one grandniece, Monica Harrison of Austin.

Funeral Mass was celebrated by Rev. Leon Rubaj in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson on Friday, June 2nd at 10 a.m. Burial followed in St. Boniface Cemetery.

Brother Sukup was a retired heating and air - conditioning mechanic for Greyhound.

He was born in Penelope (Hill County) in Central Texas and had lived in Fort Worth since 1954.

He worked for St. Andrew's Catholic Church after his retirement from Greyhound.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Rivercrest Country Club, and SPJST Lodge 154 since 1953.

HILDA VALENTA, who passed away June 14, 1989 in St. Joseph's Hospital, in Bryan, following a lengthy illness. She had attained the age of 64 years.

Mrs. Valenta was born January 24, 1925 in Burleson County, the daughter of the late John Peterek and Matilda Matejka Peterek. After her father's death, at an early age, her mother married Walter J. Ondrasek. She grew up in the Ondrasek home in the New Tabor community. She married Joe J. Valenta on June 25, 1947 in Caldwell.

They moved to Bryan to make their home in 1949. She was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed her family and loved to cook. Family living was her gift to life.

Survivors include her husband, Joe J. Valenta of Bryan; three sons, Joe H. Valenta and Patrick Lee Valenta of Bryan and Edward W. Valenta of College Station; one daughter, Sharon Lynn Valenta of Bryan; one brother, Walter H. Ondrasek of Caldwell; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Garbs and Mrs. Willie Mae Charanza of Caldwell and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

WERNER "PETE" LISSO who passed away Saturday, June 10, 1989 at the St. John's Hospital in San Angelo, Texas.

He was born February 5, 1915 and was raised in the Lowake community.

He attended school at Lowake and Paint Rock. He was a farmer and carpenter and the last few years he was a rancher. He lived in Rowena over 20 years. He was a Lutheran. He was secretary of Rowena Protestant Cemetery Association for a number of years.

Pete was an active helper in several community organizations and projects.

Pete will be missed very much by his many friends and family for his helping hand and friendly smile. He was very active and our handyman at the SPJST Lodge No. 49 in Rowena.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Allison of San Angelo; one son, Glen Lisso of Victoria; one sister, Alma Lisso; three brothers, Arthur Lisso and Delbert Lisso of Rowena and O.C. Lisso of Lowake and five grandchildren.

EL CAMPO -- Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, 1989 at St. Philip Catholic Church in El Campo for Mary Frances Baca, 84, who died June 7th after a long illness at the Hillje Nursing Home she helped found in 1954.

Mary was a member of Hillje - El Campo Lodge No. 40 and well known among Texas Czechs for her promotion of the Czech language and culture.

She was born February 15, 1905 in Stary Hamry, Moravia, Czechoslovakia. She and her parents, Josef and Barbora Matejka Chovanec, immigrated to the United States when she was two years old. They settled in Granger, Texas but moved to Hillje, near El Campo, when she was 11 years old.

Her first husband, Ed Hlavaty, died in 1935. She married Fred Baca in 1937 who passed away in 1975.

Survivors include two daughters who live in El Campo, Barbara Baker and Mary Sexton; also two sons, Eugene Hlavaty of Modesto, California and Fred Baca, Jr. of Paris, California. There are 14 surviving grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 6 great - great grandchildren.

A Successful PeslCharba Reunion Held

7ictoria County CHS Celebrates Occasion The fifth anniversary of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society was celebrated recently with a covered dish supper and the presentation of a plaque to Peter Matl, a native born Czechoslovakian, in recognition of his recent accomplishments after graduation from Stroman High School, in Victoria.

Special guests were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zdanek Matl, and his sister, Donna. Another special guest was Robert Janak of Beaumont who is serving as state trustee of the Texas Czech Heritage Society. President Marjorie Matula presided at the business meeting which followed. The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society now has 108 members with a goal set at 150 to be achieved by the end of this year.

Plans were finalized for a one - hour film on Czechoslovakia Remembered, to be shown on Tuesday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Victoria College Johnson Symposium. It is a travelogue that has been made by American filmmakers about Czechoslovakia. The program is narrated "live and in person" by Allan Longacre, the executive director of the Arts Exchange and the founder of Bringing the World To Texas series.

Admission is $3 per person. CHS members will pay $2 admission with their membership card; children 12 years and under, will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. A Czech exhibit will be on display at the time. The film is a prelude to the PODLUZAN appearance which is forthcoming.

A concert and dance of the PODLUZAN performers will be held Friday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Convention Center. The orchestra performance will cap off the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society's fifth anniversary. The Society was organized June 30, 1984.

The Czech Heritage Society Festival and Tarok Tournament will be held Sunday, October 15, at the Bluebonnet Convention Center, beginning at 11 a.m. There will be Czech museum exhibit for public view throughout the day.

A Czech - style lunch will be served.

A Czech baking contest will be held with an auction of baked goods. Other features are lots of kolache and homemade chicken noodle soup.

Featured on the program for the first time by the VCHS is the Shiner Hobo Band. The San Antonio Czech Choral Club, under the leadership of Dominic Netek, will also perform for VCHS for the first time.

Everybody will get in the act with the ever - happy sing - a - long led by the Czech Singers of Victoria.

The Tarok Tournament will be in full swing all afternoon.

Music for the dance, from 4 to 8 p.m., will be furnished by the Central Texas Sounds.

Gulf Coast Czech Singers Performed In LaGrange The Gulf Coast Czech Singers, one of the smallest groups on the coast in Texas, was among one of the groups entertaining at the KJT's 100th anniversary on July 1, 1989 at La Grange, Texas. The group is composed of Mary Steho, coordinator of Louise, Lillian Polansky of Port Lavaca, Agnes Kaspar of Ganado, Henry Jedlicka of Port Lavaca and John Novak. accordian accompaniment of Port Lavaca.

This group has been promoting their Czech heritage since 1976. They have performed at most of the Czech Fests throughout Central Texas areas such as Westfest in West, Ennis Polka Festival in Ennis, Music Fest in Bryan, Wurst Fest in New Braunfels, Fort Bend Country Opry in Rosenberg, Country Opry in Victoria, also the Czech Zoo Fest and others.

Reunions Hrabal Reunion Our 17th Annual Hrabal Reunion will be held, again, at SPJST Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood Hall, 3 miles East of City of West on FM 2114 on Saturday, July 8, 1989. We had the Pesl - Charba Reunion on May 21, 1989 at Cistern Recreation and Dance Hall. We had a real good turnout; about 150 people came for the big delicious lunch. We had all kinds of delicious food and desserts.

Rosie Pesl Urban, 87 years old, was the oldest Pesl family present and she received a ceramic vase that had Pesl 1989 Reunion on it. Lexie Maresh, also 87 years old, received a gift for the oldest person present. Dean Dornak, 4 - month - old son of Danny and Mandy Dornak, received a gift for being the youngest. Cindy and Terry Namken, daughter and son - in - law of Mary Ann Pesl Srubar, were the most recently married couple -- November 1987. Jim and Mary Charba were the longest married couple, 56 years. Mrs. Dorothy Schroeder, daughter of Rosie Pesl Urban, traveled the farthest to the reunion, 275 miles; she came from North Dallas. Rosie Pesl Urban got an adult door prize which was a ceramic Jesus on a cross. Amy Wappel got the child door prize. Rosie Boehnke, received another adult door prize.

by Joe Charba. Carl Pesl, grandson of the late Anton Pesl, is going to Czechoslovakia for a short study.

John Pesl's family will be in charge of next year's reunion on April 29, 1990, and it will be held at the Cistern Recreation and Dance Hall. Bernice Pesl Mikulenka will be in charge of the reunion in 1991.

Next year, you will be required to bring a covered dish and give a donation of $5 per family or $2.50 for a single adult at the door to cover expenses of the hall and eating utensils.

A mass will be held in honor of the Pesl - Charba families at the Cistern Church as soon as possible.
