For five days this week KCEN TV Channel 6, (in Central Texas), has been showing -- "To Russia With Love" from Central Texas showing school students from Temple High School touring Russia; they 'returned Saturday, June 24th to Houston. Our pleasant surprise was to see and learn that Ryan Leshikar, son of SL President Howard and wife, Mary Leshikar, was with the group. It seems that they all were enjoying the trip and learning very many nice and pleasant things about the Russian people. Congratulations. ***

He was of the Czech origin, but this did not prevent William Paca from becoming an outstanding American in such a decisive time.

For he was one of 55 Americans who adopted and signed the Declaration of Independence.

July 4, 1989 Americans will observe the 213th anniversary of this Declaration of Independence. It was then this country was founded.

All 55 Americans representing 13 states signed this historic Declaration.

But their unity did not represent the people's unity. As claimed, about one - third favored the unity with England, and many also moved back to the old country when the Independence was Declared.

Who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance? Ask most people who wrote the Star - Spangled Banner, and they'll tell you Francis Scott Key. Ask them who wrote the Declaration of Independence, and many will say Thomas Jefferson.

But ask them who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance, and most won't know. It's not really surprising.

Until 1939, not even historians were sure of the real author.

The Pledge first appeared in September 8, 1892, edition of "The Youth's Companion" as part of the official program for school children throughout the nation to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The Pledge was first recited at the dedication of the World's Columbian Exposition Grounds at Chicago in October, 1892.

Two members of the staff of "The Youth's Companion" were Mr. James Bellamy and Mr. James Upham. For 47 years the family of each man claimed authorship for him and held evidence to substantiate their claims. Finally, in 1939, a committee was appointed to weigh carefully the conflicting evidence. Unanimously, they decided in favor of Francis Bellamy.

Unfortunately, Francis Bellamy, an ordained Baptist minister, had died 8 years previously. Congress officially designated his work as the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag on December 28, 1945.

The Pledge of Allegiance, as originally written differs slightly from its present form. In 1923, the phrase, "of the United States of America" was added following "the flag." On Flag Day, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into Law, House Resolution 243 which inserted the words, "under God," after "one nation." *** What is an American? A person who yells for the government to balance the budget and then takes his last dime to make the down payment on a new car.

He whips the enemy, then gives them the shirt off his back.

He yells for speed laws that will stop fast driving and then won't buy a car if it won't go 100 miles an hour.

He knows the line - up of every baseball team in the American and National Leagues, then can't remember half the words of "The Star - Spangled Banner."

He'll spend half a day looking for vitamin pills to make him live longer, then drive 80 miles an hour on slick pavement to make up for lost time.

When in his office, he talks about baseball, football and fishing, but when he is at the game or on the lake, he talks about business.

We're the country that has more food to eat than any other country in the world and more diets to keep us from eating it.

We are still pretty nice folks.

Calling a person "A Real American" is the best compliment you can pay.

SPJST Sponsoring Drive To Raise Funds For Renovation Of Battleship Texas And Czech Chair Dear Officers and Members: The Supreme Lodge approved the proposal to help raise funds to restore and renovate the Battleship "Texas" and also at the same time to raise donations for the Czech Chair. Both projects are tax - deductible contributions.

"To establish a major new Czech Studies Program in our state, THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS (CEFT) is conducting a drive to fund an Endowed Educational Chair at a major Texas university. The establishment of the Chair will ensure that funds will always be available so that Czech language could always be taught."* "Since the early years of this century, the Czech youth of this state have had the opportunity to study the language and culture of their forebears at state universities. Czech classes have served to bring generations together and foster a love and understanding of our immigrant ancestors and their values."* Battleship Texas is now a memorial ship owned by Texas and was called the Flagship. Battleship Texas played a very important part in World War II and was used in many battles.

Battleship Texas has 150,000 visitors each year, but now is in critical need of major repair and must be towed into the shipyards for repair. The complete cost of restoring the battleship is estimated to cost 13.4 million and all the Texans are asked for their help in raising these funds.

Battleship Texas helped save our country and now we need to save it, won't you help?

We are hoping to reach our goals for these projects by September 1, 1989.

We realize that, while some lodges may

have funds available, others may not, but they may want to solicit contributions from members or sponsor an activity to raise funds. In any case, we certainly hope that the effort you make in support of these projects will be richly rewarded in the benefits of fraternal "involvement " Your lodge's goal amount is ten cents per member. The amount may be more or less. Each lodge that meets their goal(s) will have their lodge name in the Vestnik and what project(s) they supported. Individual contributors will also be recognized in the Vestnik.

The progress of this drive will be in the Vestnik. Lodge donations and individual donations are encouraged.

Donation checks should be made to SPJST and mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; Attention: Office of the President. After all contributions are collected one check will be disbursed from the Supreme Lodge to each project. Therefore, at this time, we are soliciting you and your lodge's help with these important projects.

We are asking each lodge to donate a minimum of 10 cents per member to at least one of the worthwhile projects.

If it is possible, please support both projects.

The Supreme Lodge will match each lodge's donation up to the amount of $2,500 for each project. You can be sure that we at the Supreme Lodge greatly appreciate your help.

SPJST can meet its goals only if we act on these fraternal commitments before September 1, 1989.

Let us all help keep these projects alive.

Dear Members: Moravia Lodge No. 23 held a meeting on Tuesday, June 13th, with fourteen members present.

President Albert Olsovsky called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for all the departed members and for our last . departed member, Brother Charles Maresh.

Our secretary read the minutes of our previous meeting, after which the treasurer reported on our financial standing since our lodge hall received two coats of paint recently.

Secretary Hattie Brossmann read a letter she had received from our District VI Director Matt Vanek in reference to the State Convention which will be held in District VI, in Victoria, in 1992.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 28, 1989 The members present decided to have a bake sale on Saturday, July 8th at 9 a.m. at the lodge hall and we ask all members to please help us by donating baked goods, such as cakes, pies, kolache, cookies or any home canned vegetables or fruits, jelly, noodles or fresh vegetables; any donations will help with our expenses.

If you know of anyone who is a member, tell them about our bake sale because they may not have read their Vestnik.

After the meeting adjourned, refreshments and kolache, which were donated by a member, were enjoyed.

No. 24 Cyclone

Lodge

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 24 was held Sunday, June 11, at 2:30 p.m. This was our first Sunday afternoon meeting after we decided to change our meeting times. Thank you to all who attended this meeting. Let's all plan to attend these Sunday afternoon meetings and enjoy socializing with our fellow members and friends.

No one was reported on the sick list for this month. We are very happy to hear this and hope everyone continues to be healthy.

Those visiting our lodge meeting today were Patsy Koslovsky, Martha Klusacek, Dorothy Novosad and Richard Schneider. We want to thank these people who joined us at our meeting. Thanks to any other visitors we may have had with us.

Patsy Koslovsky was with us to install the new youth club officers.

Congratulations to the new officers.

These youth are our lodge's future leaders .

Birthdays for the month of June are E.J. Giestman -- June 1, Mike Carpenter -- June 10, Andy Baker -June 15, Terry Coots -- June 21 and Vlasta Marek -- June 21.

Bill and Pat Sebek celebrated their wedding anniversary on June 6th.

Congratulations to all our members who are celebrating special days this month.

During the meeting, we heard District II queen candidate speeches made by Christi Marek, Susan Holtman and Melanie Zavodny. These girls will be competing with other girls from District II for the title of District II Queen. Giving their speeches to the membership gave the girls a little practice standing before a crowd. All the speeches given were very good and we enjoyed them very much. Thanks girls!

Following the meeting we had our 50 - year pin ceremony. Those recipients of 50 - year pins who were present were Mary Ann Bartek, Wilbert Mikeska, Raymond Pechal and Mary Schneider.

Congratulations to these loyal and devoted members of the SPJST. A sausage and sauerkraut meal followed the ceremony. Thank you to all our members who came out to support this social. Thank you to all those who worked in helping to prepare the meal.

The next regular meeting will be July 9th. This is the Sunday as District II Youth Achievement Day (YAD). If you or your children attend YAD, it will count as your having attended the meeting, therefore, youth club members will get points for having attended a regular monthly meeting.

Once again, we have received abundant rains. Hopefully, the corn and maize, as well as many of the garden crops, will now yield abundantly. So, until our next letter, "Dobr3"/ den!"

Dear Members: Another month has passed and it is time again for another monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jona g . It was decided to hold the July meeting on the regular scheduled first Sunday, the 2nd, since Fourth of July falls on a weekday. The starting time will be 2 p.m. at the lodge hall. Routinely given reports will be on the agenda and any business needing immediate attention will be taken care of. The "Order of Business" will be standard. July birthdays will be remembered.

The luncheon or "Velika svafeina" and fraternal hour will convene after the business meeting. Taroky cards, dominoes and horseshoe games will be available for the asking to those wishing to partake.

With a fair quorum present, the June 4th meeting started on time. In the absence of Lodge 28 secretary Sister H. Kelner, who had to work at her regular job, Brother A.J. Kelner, FAC, took the minutes. All reports were accepted as given and, with no real urgent business needing immediate attention, the meeting adjourned.

Sister Sophia Kasmir won the regular door prize. The two special prizes to honor Father's Day were won

by Brothers Albert Lupik and Frank Brdecka respectively.

Luncheon was much lighter than in May, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Those adding to the items furnished by the lodge were Sister Kasmir, Haverda, Sontag, H. Kelner and Nezval along with Brothers Lupik, Kubena and A.J. Kelner.

Some sort of "Gremlin" got into this writer's letter last month and two names were left off of the food donation list. These were Sister Sontag and Brother Kubena. What happened "Only the Shadow knows" and the "Gremlin" that he saw do it. Our apologies for this 'SNAFU." A question came up as to what it is we are partaking in, food wise, after the business meeting, a regular meal or what? Well, according to past practices, which went on time immemorial until some years back, it was a "svaCina." This writer started to call it a "luncheon." After checking two dictionaires, this writer found that "svaeina" is NOT a luncheon.

According to the " Cesko - AnglicI4 Slovnik" (the big one), "svaeina" is either a mid - morning or mid afternoon tea or coffee. A luncheon according to "Webster's Collegiate Dictionary" (fifth edition) is a portion of food or light repast, taken between meals or as an irregular meal. Taking all of these points into consideration, the British "Tea time" and "svaeina being the same, the early members did have on a "svaeina" and at first we did also. When sandwiches or the fixings for them and the occasional fried chicken and/or sausage were added it became more than an afternoon "tea and/or coffee" but in no way did it become a "full meal" nor was it in anyway MEANT TO BE. So, in conclusion of this "mess or messy mess," the "Velika svaeina" or luncheon is close to being correct for the drink and food that is eaten at this time is SUPPOSED TO BE a light repast taken after a lunch or dinner and before dinner or supper.

Whichever name you wish to call these two major meals, these in between "luncheons" are NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR EITHER. Enough said!!!

It was brought to this writer's attention that three members were ill

so far this month. Brother Albert "Palka" Michulka was and/or is in the Wharton Hospital with unknown ailments. Brother Walter Wasicek was and/or is in a Houston hospital with a heart problem. Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner, lodge FAC, dislocated his right shoulder and is "strapped up" so to speak. We wish them and all other members who we may have missed a speedy recovery.

On a sad note, it was reported that Brother John V. Sklar, Jr. of Sealy passed away early this month and our condolences go to his family.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The June lodge meeting was held on Friday, June 9, 1989 at 7:30 p.m. with President George Pavelka, Jr. presiding.

Flag Bearers were Jon and Harry Gersbach.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek and Harvey Polivka of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Roll call of officers revealed Vice President - FAC Tim Reese absent, so Calvin Skrabanek sat in for him. Sister Delores Skrabanek also read the roll call of trustees and sales representatives. The minutes of May 7th meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence included a safety seminar on Workman's Compensation to be heid June 27th in Fort Worth, a reminder of 990 and 990T filings, a letter from SL Vice President Bernie Gebala commending Brother Emil J. Hejl for 50 years of selling life insurance for SPJST and Lodge No. 47 (from February 7, 1939 selling $495,000 of insurance and 338 certificates), the availability of Czechoslovakian film and a letter was read from Leland R. Gebert (maintenance construction supervisor of the State Department of Highways) regarding the removal of 2 signs placed on state property, advertising the lodge picnic.

New members accepted were Allyssa Anne Bragewitz, Placida G. Martinez and Belinda Kay Zalkovsky. A warm welcome and do become active in lodge activities, meetings and socials such as family nights and dances.

I had omitted some members on the sick list at the May meeting, namely, Brothers Henry Haisler and Alfred Klusacek and Sisters Judy Sirny, Juanita Wychopen and Grace Schiller.

Sorry for the oversight; hope you are much improved, healthwise.

In the June meeting, we learned of the hospitalization of Sisters Phyllis

Billeck and Anna Belle Chlapek and Brothers Alfred Klusacek and Bill Kotrla. Sister Billeck passed away Saturday, June 10th. Deepest sympathy to her family. We hope the brothers are well on the way to recovery.

Sisters Lucy Mihatsch and Adeline Kohutek gave the monthly reports and the board minutes were read by Wallace Jez. All of the chairpersons gave their monthly reports and the picnic chairpersons all gave detailed reports and thanked their workers and the donors of food in the sweet booth and items for auction. Thanks to everyone for working or for coming and supporting the lodge picnic.

Under new business, Brother Wallace Jez announced that the KCs were donating a staff and U.S. Flag to the Youth Club meeting room.

The cabinets were installed before the picnic.

Birthdays will be celebrated by Brothers Calvin Skrabanek and Frank Klinkovsky and Sisters Ruby L. Bolton and Lenora Talasek. Also Sister Martha Klusacek will have a birthday this month but she was not at the meeting because her aunt passed away.

May you all have a special day.

Brother Frank and Sister Irma Klinkovsky were the only ones to have a wedding anniversary in June. Happy anniversary and many, many more to you.

The fathers were asked to stand since Father's Day is the month of June.

A discussion of date for the next lodge meeting was held; we voted to hold it on the regular date Sunday, July 2nd at 2 p.m.

The attendance was 47 members and 2 visitors. We enjoyed cake and coffee after the adjournment of the meeting.

Lodge

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81 was called to order by President Charlie Matcek at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 1989. Twenty three members and guests were present. We were happy to have our District V Director Louis Hanus and Mrs. Hanus join us for the meeting.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, we stood for a moment of silence in memory of our departed member, Sister Mary Zubik. Sincere sympathy is extended to her family.

May she rest in peace.

All officers were present for roll call. Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the May meeting. The minutes were approved as read. She also read letters of thanks from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the March of Dimes. Correspondence from the Supreme Lodge was also read.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's financial report was also approved as read.

Details and monthly activities of the lodge's Special Fund were presented by the Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel.

His report was also approved.

Brother Herbert Nowotny recently celebrated his birthday at a party in the Polly Ryon Skilled Care Nursing Center in Richmond. We all send our best wishes to you, Herbert, as you convalesce.

Wednesday, June 28, 1989—VESTNIK/5 Cheryl, Amanda, and Lynnette Newman were accepted as new members of Lodge No. 81. These three little sisters are the daughters of Vincent and Jeanette Newman of Fairchilds. We welcome you to membership in Lodge 81.

Director Hanus informed us of matters upcoming for discussion on the Supreme Lodge level.

Under old business, discussion of paving the parking area was resumed.

Committee Chairman Walzel reported that a second and third bid had been received. After discussion of materials and specifications, members voted in favor of concrete rather than black top paving. Work is to begin on this project in the near future.

Lynette Newman drew names of door prize winners. The lucky ones were Charlie Matcek, Vlasta Nowotny, Benita Walzel and Vincent Newman.

The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 1989.

No. 88, Houston News Lodge .

On May 9, 1989 Ed and Ellen Miculka and their traveling companions, Rudy and Celestine Darilek, took a vacation trip for 16 days and covered 4600 miles. They visited the Darilek's daughter, Joanne and family in Midland, Texas, and spent some time with daughter, Rose and family over Mother's Day in Fresno, California. They went to a winery, a fruit packing plant, Sutter's Mill (where gold was discovered in 1849), Yosemite National Park; the Sequoia trees in the park were the highlight of the trip. They are almost indescribable, so big (in fact, breath taking). They spent some time at the Ponderosa Ranch, where the western series Bonanza was filmed and tried to see the 4000 - year - old Bristlepine Tree Grove. They got within 2 miles of them at over 12,000 feet elevation and snow covered the dirt road and they had to give up. That was the most exciting event of the trip and also the most dangerous. They saw lots of gorgeous mountain scenery and also stopped at Reno, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, and Laughlin, Nevada.

Comment: These two fine couples deserved this trip. We at Lodge 88 missed you very much.

On June 9, 1989 Bill and Alice Souchek celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary, and did we have a "blast," like our youngsters express themselves. Bill and Alice danced and didn't miss a step to the music of the three musicians: John Havlik, J.J. Brosch and Paul Machac, who kept the tempo at a fever pitch during the party given by Bill and Alice Souchek.

The Czech class of the lodge, headed by the inexhaustable energy of Anfgela Prasek just had to be a success. She was assisted by Esther Holton and Earline Hoffman. Other helpers had the job of placing the many different fancy party foods on the long tables at the front of the kitchen dining room.

President Jerry Ermis. of Lodge 88 led us in returning thanks for our many blessings and the delicious treats brought by the participants. Bill responded with a brief summary of his married life with Alice, who also chimed in with quips about interesting incidents of their 59 years together.

Bill was born in Iowa and Alice is a native Houstonian, and when Bill

came to Houston in 1927, she met this handsome man and went home excited to tell her family about him.

They married 2 1/2 years later.

Bill went to Iowa College and studied Biology and Science, then moved to Houston and taught at Kincaid for 20 years, also taught night classes at Alvin, San Jacinto 3 years and 6 years at Spring Branch, then day classes at the University of Houston.

One day he told Alice "I'm going to retire," but she knew he couldn't do that, and he knew that, too. He said "I'm going to teach Czech wherever they will let me. Of course, our Lodge 88 was greatly in favor of that, and is still at it. The next class will start September 18, 1989.

The head table centerpiece was beautifully decorated in pink with a pink and white cake with the inscription "Stastne 59 Vyroci, pro Elisku a Vilema." The unusual among the many party foods was a dish of liver dumpling soup and Pilsner beer direct from Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.

Bill and Alice have one daughter, Julie, who has a PhD from Rice University and lives in Oak Park, Illinois. She was in the process of moving and wasn't able to be there.

Bill said anyone wishing to enter the class on September 18 is welcome. The grammar part of the class should not discourage anyone, but the interesting incidental quips are what makes the class a success that it is.

Alice told me that she paints china which is original. Maybe she will bring us a sample sometime.

We wish you the very best for the future, and we all love you both.

Our monthly meeting was June 12, which was well attended. Harley Cox reported for the Entertainment Committee. He stated that the month of May was not as profitable as other months, but there ususally are good reasons for that such as graduation exercises, closing of schools, and vacations. June started out real good so far. Pick up the Blue Room schedules at the door or office.

June 23, we had the Texas Brew (country - western music) and June 24, the Knights of Dixie, a real good band of mixed music, performed well.

Dear Members and Friends.

Rain, rain, that is what we have been having now for about 30 days or more.

It has been many years since this much rain has come in the month of June.

The lakes are full and the rivers are out of banks and everywhere you look there is water. They have been asking people not to go to the lakes and stay out of streams and rivers, but some people do not take heed and the first thing we know the rescue firemen are looking for someone who had drowned. So far the rains have filled the reservoirs and the ground is soaking wet and will hardly take any more. It has been raining so much that people with roof damage from May 4 have not been able to repair the roof or to get large trees off the house.

However, it is up to the people to protect their property after a settlement has been completed with the insurance company. (I don't know why God seems to be punishing the

KASH FOR KIDS [charity project] hoping to win a cake. world or rather the people. We all need to straighten out our lives and try to get peace on earth. As all of you know, we are having different kinds of things that seem to teach us to do right.)

The fire ants and now there seems that the killer bees are on the way. I think the government needs to get something going to help control these things. This really has been quite a year so far, first the freeze so late and then the rains. It seems that the poor farmer can hardly win. At least when people bet on the horse racing or go to Las Vegas, they may win sometimes, but the farmer who puts food on our tables really has a hard time.

It is wonderful when some of the members of different lodges read the Vestnik and express how they feel about articles that are in there to help keep them posted as to what is going on. My two friends who I haven't seen for some time sent me a card saying they enjoy reading my, as well as other, letters in the Vestnik. They are

Buel and Frances Mathews. He is known as. Dime Box; he was raised around there and Frances is a retired school teacher. Even though members like them don't attend the meetings, they keep up by reading the SPJST paper known as the Vestnik (Herald). I would like the older members who get the paper to be sure that the younger members get it. It is sent FREE (one per family) if we have a life insurance policy, but you have to ask that it be sent to you. We have a good editor and his wife who really keep things in order.

Our June 11th meeting was just as it should be: very interesting and good reports were given by our lodge officers. We had a visitor, Ms. Lou Bush, I don't think it's any relation to the U.S. President, but she was welcomed by the entire membership.

Brother Dick and Sister Martha Durham and their family of two sons with a helper really outdid themselves with a delicious fish dinner with all

The Hubenaks weren't at the meeting due to Jerry and Joyce Whatley's 30th wedding anniversary, which was celebrated in Irving, Texas.

Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek are married 18 years. Carl and Christine Zich have been together for 49 years and they are looking toward next year for their golden wedding anniversary.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Helen Kubala and Christine Zich; neither would reveal their age.

Martha Durham sent birthday cards to sixteen members over 65 years of age who had birthdays in June.

Our dear Joy Paprskar is really having a time with her illness and had to be in the hospital. again. We pray that this young lady gets well soon. All of us miss her at our meetings.

Frank and Marie Tesar, along with rest of their family, will be going to Shiner, Texas for a big occasion later this month.

Roy and Lydia Alholm have gone to Chicago, Illinois and then to the Sokol National Slet in Omaha, Nebraska and also will be going to other places.

Mac and Lillie McMillen have gone to Iowa to visit relatives.

This past Tuesday, I went to the Ladies' Circle of our lodge to take pictures of their club. They are all so nice and all greeted me and asked that I stay for lunch, but with all the loss claims due to the storms, as an adjuster for Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance, I had to leave. Florence Greer gave me some pastries to take along. This is a fine group of ladies and they have made several donations to our lodge. As a past officer and the present officers, we really appreciate the many things you all do for our lodge. I hope I get the pictures in time to send with this letter and hope rother Sefcik is able to put them in the Vestnik.

our lodge hall anniversary each year in September. This will be in September and it will be the Czech Heritage. Of course, it will not be like what we had last year, but we plan on having a large dinner and some entertainment for you to enjoy. We will have two bands from out - of - town playing; keep this in mind. It will be the Texas Dutchmen from Houston, and the Jodie Mikula band from Ennis. This will be in the Calendar Section and more will be in the Vestnik about this event from our lodge.

FOR KIIIS sent our The KAS lodge a letter of appreciation.

The lodge is sending a donation to the :attleship of Texas Fund. I hope the SPJST lodges everywhere will be able to give something. This is a wonderful thing to have a battleship named after the state of Texas, so we need to keep it in the best of care.

Don't forget the game nights on first and third Tuesdays of each month at our hall. They are going great with some new members now and then; not only do we play Taroky, but other games as well. The lodge furnishes popcorn and drinks on these nights.

I will end my letter with something cute: There was a near - sighted woman who had never seen an elephant before. One day a circus came to town and one of the elephants escaped and wandered off into her garden. In terror she phoned the police and tried to describe the enormous creature -- "He is gray and wrinkled and as big as a garage," she said.

"Well," replied the policeman, "What is this terrible monster doing now?"

"Right now he is tearing up the cabbage with his tail," she replied. The policeman then asked: "What does he do with it?" The woman squinted through her window for another look, and then she said "You would never believe me if I told you."

There were no communications.

Mydell Grochoske reported she had attended the scholarship honor for Shelly Cox. She said it was very nice.

We voted on a new member, Derek Richard Doutlick, a junior (sales representative Marie Hampton). We also had transfers to Lodge No. 180, they were Wilma B. Young, Theresa Lenie, Phillip Psencik and Bernard A. Psencik. We welcome all these members and hope they will be active members.

I want to give a special thank you to each of the faithful workers in the kitchen. We do need more workers so the same ones don't have to work as often. Workers are also needed in other departments.

Our next meeting will be July 11th because July 4th is on our regular meeting, time is 7:30 p.m., trustees' meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: Where is this time going to? It seems like we're coming and going at the same time.

We were saddened to lose 2 more members this month.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the families of Brother James 0.

Burdick, Sr., and Brother Anton "Dick" Sukup. May they rest in peace.

Many of our members attended the Southern District Slet which was hosted by Sokol West last weekend.

You always enjoy seeing friends from the different cities. We are proud of our group. Today by air, chartered bus and private cars, a large group left for the National Sokol Slet in Omaha, Nebraska. Many of them are our lodge members. We hope they arrive and return home safely.

We extend our congratulations to our young member Tina Harrison of St. Louis, Missouri who won the championship trophies from the Missouri Valley Tennis Association for ages 12 and under. She is 10 and now goes to Kansas City for the Challenger Association. Her aim is to go to Wimbledon. Good luck! She is my great niece.

The meeting of the Birthday Club Sisters was called to order at 11:20 a.m. by President Kathy Trefell.

Pearl Hanka read the minutes of our previous meeting for Rosalee Kostom who is traveling in Europe. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave her report. She was pleased with the pastry booth. She thanked all who helped her and also announced that 2 pounds of coffee was donated and a $10.00 donation. The special treat we had at the Pecos Guild was attended by 36 ladies; only a very few complaints, but that is a normal thing.

Sunshine Lady Mary Kosut gave the card report and also thanked all who showed their concern for her during her long illness. Mary thanked Evelyn Mikolas for taking care of the cards for the sick members.

Lowrina Lindemann, chairman of the Drawing Prizes Committee, gave her report. The winners were Louis Hanus, Frank Tilich and Albert Hollum.

Old Business -- President Kathy stated there would not be a covered dish anymore with an additional fee.

Lillian Finn made a motion, seconded by Helen Hegwood that, when we have a covered dish luncheon, the club will buy the meat, and desserts and vegetables will be furnished by the Birthday Club members. This motion carried.

Anna Hoffman had been in the hospital for a short time.

Della Kadlecek thanked the Birthday Club for all they did for her and her family in their sorrow, when Amos passed away. She also thanked us for the meal we served after the funeral.

Guess what! This has never happened in the Birthday Club or Lodge 88 -- We had a member to reach 100 years. Her daughter, Evelyn Mikolas, who lives with her mother, Mrs. Herman Baethe, announced that on July 29th from 2 to 4 p.m., there

will be a celebration for Annie Baethe at Lodge 88 in the dining room and the Red Room. Virginia Hale made a motion, seconded by Mary Kosut to get some flowers for this occasion. The motion passed unanimously. Rita Alexander will get the flowers.

Kathy Trefell's gift was won by Willie Mae Stang. Gift from Lillie Spies was won by Lillian Finn.

Dear Members and Friends: We entered our meeting on June 7 with the sad news of the passing away of Mary Dunlap at 4:20 a.m. that morning.

Our meeting was called to order by our Vice President Rose Steinman. She led us to the Pledge of Allegiance, and the members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for Mary Dunlap. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family. May she rest in peace and may her memory live among us.

Sunshine Chairman Anna Johnson reported on the get well and sympathy cards sent.

Merel Kovar read correspondence from the Dallas Circle of Czech Women to be their guests on Friday, August 18 at 11 a.m. Plans were made to attend. I know it will be enjoyed by all.

We had 29 members present and our welcomed guest, Jewell Clark.

Door prize donated by Mary Pavey was won by Annie Whitsill. Geneva Hennessey will donate the prize for our July 5th meeting.

Billie Starr announced Lydia Alholm, Ann Sustala and Elma Anderson as hostesses for our July meeting.

We all were happy to have Ann back in our midst. She thanked us for the get well prayers and good wishes. She said she was doing fine. Welcome back!

It was voted our July luncheon will be a cold lunch.

Congratulations are extended to R.L. Alholm who received his Masters Degree from TWC; he is the son of Roy and Lydia Alholm. Keith Riney of Texas Tech in Lubbock was accepted

Roy and Lydia Alholm left on June 11th for Glen Ellyn and the Chicago area to visit their son, Tony and family, relatives and friends. Then they will attend the American Sokol Slet in Omaha, Nebraska and be back June 26th.

Groundbreaking Exhibition Of Czech Art: 1900-1945 Museum of Fine Arts, Houston October 8, 1989 - January 7, 1995 The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents Czech Modernism: 1900 1945, a multi - media exhibition that is the first of its kind in America, tracing the evolution of Czechoslovakian art from Expressionism through Surrealism during the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition of over 300 works includes a cross - section of the visual arts -- films, photography,

painting, graphics, and sculpture -created in Czechoslovakia during this period of great artistic invention.

Czech Modernism: 1900 - 1945 is organized by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in association with Anthology Film Archives, New York.

From 1900 to 1945 Prague flourished as an international capitol and geographic crossroads, and artists working in Prague were very much a part of the Modernist movement throughout Europe. As with other parallel movements in Europe such as De Stijl in Holland and the German Bauhaus, the Czech avant - garde was interdisciplinary. Filmmakers and painters were also photographers, and sculptors worked in film.

Czech art is unique because artists, photographers, and filmmakers working between 1900 - 1945 studied and synthesized the most advanced modern concepts and developed their own distinctive style without becoming expatriates in the major art centers of Paris, Berlin, Moscow and New York.

Instead they relied on brief trips, publications, and cultural visitors to Czechoslovakia to inform them of innovations. Consequently, Czech art tended not to enter the collections of other countries.

Despite the brilliant body of work that resulted during this period, Czech artists remain virtually unknown due to language barriers and political conditions after 1945 that prevented the assimilation of Czechoslovakian art into the general knowledge of art history.

Bringing these works to a new audience, Czech Modernism: 1900 1945 includes sections on 1) painting, sculpture, and works on paper 2) photography, and 3) film. The segment of painting, sculpture, and works on paper includes artists such as FrantiS'ek Kupka whose radical abstract paintings are widely recognized as among the first works of non - objective art, and Zdenek Peganek who first introduced neon light into sculpture. Bohumil Kubita, Emil Filla, and Otto Gut freund created the uniquely Czech movement of Cubo - expressionism which combined expressive content with the formal aspects of the Paris cubists.

The section of photography includes works by Franti gek Drtikol who gained a world - wide reputation in the early 20s with his nude studies influenced by cubism and the decorative style of the 20s. Other photographers in the exhibition include Josef Sudek, Jaromir Funke, and Adolf Schneeberger, founding members of the Czech Society of Photography in 1924, and Jaroslas, Rbssler, a member of the Construct'vist group Devetsil.

Czech film is remarkable in that it was recognized as a serious art form earlier in Prague than in the other world capitols. By the 1920s the Czech film industry had established major studio facilities in Prague. Many artists in a range of media were drawn to film, including artist and critic Karel Teige and theater directors E.F. f Voskovec, and Jan Burian, Jul Wench. Other filmmakers included Alexander Hackenschmied, who also organized avant - garde film festivals in 1930 - 31, and Gustav Machat)"?, a leading film director in the late 1920s and early 30s whose best - known film is Ecstasy (1933) starring Hedy Lamarr.

The works in this exhibition have been drawn from international collections, with unprecedented loans from the National Gallery of Prague, the Moravian Gallery of Brno, the Czechoslovak Film Archive, the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague,

and numerous regional Czech museums.

Czech Moderism: 1900 - 1945 is a project originated by Anne Tucker, Curator of Photography at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and guest curator Jaroslav Andel Other curators are Alison de Lima Greene, Associate Curator of 20th Century Art, and Ralph McKay, film program director, both at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Willis Hartsborn, director of exhibitions at the International Center of Photography, New York.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue documenting this rich, but little - known era of art. The catalogue contains essays by Alison de Lima Greene, Willis Hartshorn, Jaroslav Andel, Canadian Michal Schonberg, and Czech scholars Hvezdoslav Stefan, Miroslav Lama, Frantikk .rnejkal, Zdeak Kirschner, Antonin Dufek, Zdenk Stabla, and Pavel Taussig.

Czech Modernism: 1900 - 1945 is part of the international celebration of photography's sesquicentennial. The exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Language Students Study At Charles University Czech

PRAGUE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA Students of the Czech language from various schools throughout the U.S. will depart for Prague, CSSR on July 3, 1989 to participate in 3 weeks of study at Charles University in Czechoslovakia.

This group of 22 students will include 12 from Texas, 4 from Nebraska, 2 from Seattle, Washington and one each from California, Missouri, New York and Virginia. Most of them are university students studying Czech in Slavic Language Departments in their respective schools.

This study program is being offered by the Czechoslovak Foreign Language Institute in Prague and is the 10th such program which started in the early 1970s. The only cost to the students is $150 for tuition and round trip air fare, U.S.

to Prague. All other costs -- housing in a school dormitory, all meals, after class lectures and walking tours of Prague, two weekend excursions to historic and interesting areas in other parts of Czechoslovakia, plus free concerts and theatre performances are borne

by CSSR government.

For needy university students from Texas, the Czech Ex - Students Association (CESAT) has made grants of up to $300 per student to help defray the cost of this trip.

Charles J. Heyda, Czech language instructor at the Westchester Education Center, Houston, Texas as USA Student Coordinator for the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute recruited and organized this student group which ranges in ages from 19 to 52.

By total immersion in the language at the university and on the streets of Prague, all the students hope to improve their skills and learn more of the history and culture of the land of their ancestors.

1989 Leaders-In-Training Retreat Camp Val Verde Camp Val Verde was the site for the 1989 leaders - in - training retreat.

While the place was the same as last year, there were many differences.

First and foremost was the amount of teens in attendance. Joining the eight returning LITs from last year's retreat were 30 energetic LITs representing ALL SEVEN DISTRICTS. The districts and lodges that were represented are as follows: DISTRICT I -- Lodges 13 and 17 DISTRICT II -- Lodges 18, 24, 29, 47, 74, 177, and 187 DISTRICT III -- Lodges 84 and 92 DISTRICT IV -- Lodge 49 DISTRICT V -- Lodges 88 and 172 DISTRICT VI -- Lodges 30 and 40 DISTRICT VII -- Lodge 107 In addition to the LITs in attendance, President Leshikar and SYD Claudette Reese were assisted by the following individuals: DYCs -- Susan Skrabanek, Patsy Koslovsky, Susan Bohnenberger,, Marie Stayton, Anita Roye and Maxine Pavliska.

From The District Youth Counselor District V I Camp Dear Campers and Chaperones, The District VI Youth Camp will be held July 7th through 9th at Camp Lone Star near La Grange.

The camp will start at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 7th, and conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 9th.

You will need to bring the following items: sheets, pillow, bath towels, washclothes, swim suit, beach towel, shorts, shirts, flashlight, and personal belongings (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, sunscreen, brush, etc.)

It would be most helpful to label all your belongings.

Snacks will be provided each mid - morning, mid - afternoon, and after the evening activities. You may want to bring money to buy your own drinks, etc., from the concession stand.

Our activities will include swimming, singing, games, dancing, and crafts. Saturday night, we will have a "Jamaican Me Crazy" party around the pool. You may just want to wear your swim suit with shorts or you can bring an outfit from home.

The LITs have learned some new dances and games and are excited about teaching these to you. Show up with a BIG SMILE and lots of enthusiasm and you're sure to have a GREAT TIME!!! See you at camp!

Time Reese -- SYD's spouse For the participants, the weekend seemed to pass all too quickly. LITs were exposed to training that will aid them as working and knowledgeable LITs during the 1989 SPJST camping season.

Special guest speaker was RN Pam Tischler from Scott and White Drug and Rehabilitation Center.

Ms. Tischler shared valuable information concerning substance abuse. Also. in attendance was Sue Harrington of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. Ms. Harrington conducted a creative dramatics workshop that instructed the LITs on how to work with younger children.

LITs were involved in other activities such as T - shirt painting, games, dancing, party planning, leadership, campfire singing, flag raising, skit performing, volleyball, swimming and hiking.

My sincere thank you to all who made this retreat possible and I want to encourage all the youth who were unable to attend this year to do so next year.

SPJST has the best LITs and LEADERS in the WORLD!!!

Heading:Lodge 30 Taiton Youth Attend LIT Retreat

Dear Vestnik Readers, I attended the LIT Retreat which was held on June 9, 10, 11 at Camp Val Verde. This year's LIT Retreat was one of the best ever. I had a wonderful time learning new games and different techniques in helping me to be a better LIT at our upcoming camp. It is very important to me to be a good leader at camp and to make sure the boys and girls are all having fun at camp.

The LIT Retreat really taught me a lot this year to help make our camp better. There were about 36 members who attended and I had a lot of fun meeting and making new friends and also getting to visit with some of my old friends. I hope that all of you who have the chance to go to the retreats, please do. It is a very enjoyable learning experience. I have gone for 3 years and each year it has gotten better and better.

On the last at the closing I said this will be my last year as LIT, however, this doesn't mean the end of SPJST for me, as a lot of adults thought. I intend to stay with and work in the SPJST for years to come. Attending along with me were also Jennifer Dluhos and Stephanie Roye from Lodge 30, Taiton.

I would like to thank SYD Claudette Reese for putting everything together and making the weekend a success. I would also like to thank SL President Howard Leshikar for the warm welcome he gave us and to the DYCs for their help in making the weekend a success and to all the friends I made.

Dear Readers, The Lodge No. 24 Cyclone Youth Club officers were installed at the mother lodge meeting and 50 - year pin ceremony held Sunday, June 11, 1989.

The officers for 1989 - 90 Youth Year are: President -- Steve Bruggman, Vice President -- Christy Marek, Secretary Kristie Waits, Treasurer -- Carl Marek, Reporter -- Melanie Zavodny and Sergeant - at - Arms -- Susan Holtman. The officers were installed into their offices by District II Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky.

After the installation, the new officers proceeded with the monthly youth club meeting. The president called the meeting to order at 2:50 p.m. David Macek led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the members remained standing for a moment of silence.

The register was read. Present were 19 members and 3 adults. Guests introduced were Danny Williams, Melanie and David Koslovsky from Seaton Lodge 47 Youth Club and DYC Patsy Koslovsky.

Carl Macek gave the treasurer's report and the balance was $728.87.

Our recent barbecue fund - raiser had a favorable outcome. Youth Leader Rose Harvell said the barbecue was a "job well done. Thanks, children, for working so hard to make our fund raiser a total success." Also, thank you to the youth parents for their time and dedication to us, those who made donations, especially Clara Krupka and Elmer "Pud" Williams, the barbecue crew who prepared the delicious meal and a big thanks to our Youth Leaders Rose Harvell and Pauline Marek; without their devotion to us, none of this would have been possible.

The meeting was then turned over to the DYC. She had just returned from LIT camp. She told us about the camp and explained the qualifications for attending. Christy Marek represented our youth club at camp.

District II YAD is July 9, 1989 at Holland. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 12 p.m. Be prompt so you don't miss out.

The District II fall trip remains undetermined. The DYC is in the process of gathering information from lodges within District II to determine the place -- Six Flags or Astroworld -and the date.

Before our meeting was adjourned, the royalty queen contestants, who will be competing at the District II YAD, presented their speeches to the audience. They are Christy Marek, Susan Holtman and Melanie Zavodny.

After our meeting was adjourned at 3:25 p.m., we had a sausage supper with the mother lodge to honor the 50 year pin recipients from Lodge 24.

Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge No. 25, Ennis held its monthly meeting on June 8th. It was called to order by our president at 7 p.m. There were 8 members and 4 guests in attendance.

Sandra Trojacek lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary read the register and then the minutes from our May meeting. They were approved as read.

The treasurer gave her report and collected dues for the 1989 - 90 year.

We then discussed District III YAD and Camp which we are all very excited about. We planned a fund - raiser so we can take a trip to Six Flags some time this summer. We also elected our officers for 1989 - 90. They are: President -- Gail Macalik, Vice President -- Julie Fowler, Secretary -Sheila Trojacek, Treasurer -- Sharon Rejcek, Sergeant - at Arms -- Brian Holland and Michael Fowler.

Dear Fellow Members, Lodge 47 Youth Club had a meeting and social at Pistle Peet's in Killeen.

We honored Michael Morris and congratulated him graduating from Rogers High School. We heard from our LITs about the LIT Retreat -- we hope you all had fun.

We installed our new officers with a candlelight ceremony and then the past officers came up and said a few words and each put out a candle.

We have a new youth club member -- Jennifer Kohutek. Happy Birthday, Jennifer!

Our Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky talked about our trip to Galveston and NASA in Houston. We have been saving a long time to make this trip and we are finally doing it. We will go to the beach and spend the night then go to Houston and go to Astroworld and Waterworld. It will be a long trip, but will be worth it. In the future, I hope more youth will join our club.

maim Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 91, Crosby on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of brother ALBERT PETE HECKLER, who passed away May 19, 1989, at his home in Crosby, Texas at the age of 69 years.

Brother Heckler was born in Cedar Bayou, Texas on November 7, 1919 to the late Pete and Rosie (Weisgerber) Heckler. He was a lifelong resident of Crosby.

He attended Crosby School and was married to Marie Sebesta on April 19, 1941 in the Crosby Brethren Church by Rev. Henry Beseda, Sr. He attended the Crosby Brethren Church and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 91, Crosby.

He was a retired carpenter and a member of Carpenter's Local for 41 years, a member of Local 1334 of Baytown, Texas and Local 551 of Houston, Texas.

A veteran of World War II, he served over 3 years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Lewis, Seattle, Washington.

Brother Heckler enjoyed raising turkeys, geese, guineas and most of all his gardening.

Sunday at 7:30 p.m., a prayer service was held at White Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Koslovsky. Funeral service for Albert Heckler was held Monday, May 22nd at Crosby Brethren Church, with Rev. Larry Koslovsky officiating. Interment was at White Cemetery in Crosby.

He had atzainn the age of 86 years.

Brother Lehde was born October 5, 1902 in Burleson County to the late William Lehde and Mary Boehme Lehde. A lifelong resident of Burleson

County, he was a retired carpenter. He raised horses and hogs and loved rodeos. He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church.

Brother Lehde married Edvina Spacek on January 14, 1931. She preceded him in death November 23, 1985. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rudy and Willie Lehde and by a sister, Estelle Turner.

Surviving are a daughter and son - in - law, Audrey and J.D.Suehs of Caldwell; brother, Franklin Lehde of Caldwell; one granddaughter, two grandsons and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Brother Lehde were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 1989 in the Caldwell Brethren Church with pastors Rev. Daniel Marek and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Terry Suehs, Jack Hearne, Virgil Tucker, Gary Zwerneman, Bernard Rychlik, Tommy Tietjen, Duane Suehs and Monroe Terry.

Podluian Ensemble Coming To Dallas Once again we have the pleasure of hosting the Podlulan C'eskoslovenskY Folklorni or Podlulan the.

Czechoslovakian Folklore Ensemble in Dallas at Sokol Athletic Center at 7448 Greenville Avenue.

This accomplished group of musicians and dancers from Bfeclav (in the southern part of Moravia) will perform typical music, song and dance from this region Friday evening, July 7th from 8 to 10 p.m. and then continue with music for listening and dancing to about 12 a.m.

This group has been in existence for over 30 years and has performed in musical festivals in many countries including the United States with much acclaim and are a welcome addition to our Czech cultural activities in Texas.

The group arrives in Dallas on Thursday afternoon and will be hosted at the Sokol Athletic Center with an evening meal and social from 7:30 p.m. on with an open house in the kitchen - bar area. Everyone is invited to come visit, talk and socialize.

After the social they will spend the night in various people's homes and then Friday will be taken sightseeing or shopping during the day.

A dinner before the concert will consist of pork roast, dumplings, sauerkraut, pastry, coffee or tea.

Dinner will be served from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the price is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

Dinner by presale tickets but later then food will be available. The bar and kitchen will be closed during the 2 - hour performance and will reopen afterwards.

Czech Celebration Plans Complete Thousands of Texans of Czech ancestry and their friends are expected to travel to La Grange, Texas for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend to join the public celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Catholic Union of Texas, The KJT. The fraternal benefit society, has reserved the Fayette County Fairgrounds in La Grange to accommodate the anticipated crowd.

Entertainment is scheduled to begin on Friday evening, June 30th, and to continue Saturday and Sunday, July 1st and 2nd. Czech and other music and dance groups from throughoutthe state will perform.

The "Podlu2an," a folk music and dance ensemble from 131-eclav, Czechoslovakia will be one of the main attractions and will perform each day.

The Centennial Celebration will also be highlighted by an outdoor mass of thanksgiving Sunday at 10 a.m. on the churchgrounds at Hostyn, a rural community located about five miles Highway south of La Grange off 77.

Bishop John L. Morkovsky of Houston and the Rev. John Peters of Victoria will be the main celebrants at the service. The Bishop is well known for his interest in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Czechs of Texas. The Rev. John Peters is the KJT State Chaplain.

Hostyn is the site where the Rev. Joseph Chromcik and a few other immigrants met 100 years ago to discuss and organize a Texas - based fraternal society to provide for the needs of their people.

The service will be followed by the dedication of a monument to the living and deceased members of the Union.

The descendants of the immigrants will not only congregate to celebrate their proud heritage, but to recall the important role their forebearers played in the development of agriculture in the state after the upheaval created by the Civil War. Marvin Marek —SPJST-

Tomasek Named Valedictorian Miss Rebecca Tomasek has been named Valedictorian of the 1989 Granger High School Senior Class, graduating with a 98.73 grade average

for her four years of high school. She is the daughter of Mary Ann and Allan Tomasek of Granger.

Becky has been active in academic and athletic activities since enrolling in high school and in UIL activities since she was in second grade. This year she was one of two GHS students who advanced to the State Class 1 - A competition in UIL, placing first in State News Writing and sixth in State UIL Number Sense. She has been a member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams for four years, advancing to regional competition in track for three years.

In addition, she has been editor of the school paper, Paw Prints, for three years, has been a class officer for four years and has been active in the G Club, Student Council, National Honor Society and the One - Act Play.

She has been a band member since junior high and served as drum major for two years.

Becky is enrolled at Texas A&M University for the fall semester.

Miss Tomasek and her parents are members of SPJST Lodge No. 20, Granger. She is the granddaughter of Frances and Charlie Tomasek of Route 1, Rogers, Texas, who are members of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

1989 Ennis Polka Festival King and Queen The 23rd Annual National Polka Festival drew an estimated 50,000 people to Ennis to enjoy the polka bands, arts and crafts and parade.

The King and Queen of the Polka Festival crowned at Friday night's dance are Dolores and John Jeffries of Garland, Texas. The two were involved in the two day events during the 23rd Annual Ennis Polka Festival.

The dance was held at SPJST Lodge No. 25 Ennis Hall.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Mikulencak of Elgin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 10, 1989.
