You are not a "pest" when you try to be of service to our members by updating their insurance for their family members -- in the final instance, they will be grateful to a sales representative. *** Sunday, June 25th -- Attention is called to the District III members pertaining, to Youth Achievement Day, which is an annual competition event, for youngsters 6 through 17 to display their skills and talents (according to the SPJST Rule Book) in various artistic categories as well as talent and royalty; they have been practicing and working toward this occasion for a long time.

DYC Bessie Petr of Dallas with her Assistant Rosemary Banik from Waco - West area have been very busy checking in and properly placing entrant cards in respective places for YAD judging, which entails many long hours and we appreciate these two ladies who coordinate their work so superbly for the day's activities to proceed smoothly.

The host lodge is also working hard to make everyone feel welcome in their spacious and comfortable lodge building and a well - balanced meal will be available for those who wish to eat a noon meal. (Refer to Sister Bessie Petr's YAD agenda in this issue for more details.)

Remember, this is the Youth's Day of District III, so let's make this the most successful one. ***

The Southern District Sokol Slet was held here in West (McLennan County) Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 9, 10 and 11 and turned out very successful. The Sokols from Corpus Christi, Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth, Houston and West (the host unit) all competed in true Sokol spirit and fraternal fashion and displayed true gymnastic competition. When this editor called that first meeting in October 1979, ten years ago, there was no idea in his mind that it would flourish as well as it has, however, thanks to the local support and support of the other units and members it has enrolled.

The Sunday ceremonies, on West Trojan Football Field, were very impressive and Southern District Sokol President Larry Laznovsky introduced SPJST Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, District III Director Sid Pokladnik and Brother Jerry Milan, and paid a very nice tribute to our Society for the support SPJST has always given to the Sokol units and gymnasts; in fact, numerous Sokol members are also SPJST members.

Our best is wished to the gymnasts who, now, go to the National Sokol Slet in Omaha, Nebraska; may they represent us well!

In the case of skin cancer, that complacency can be deadly. Basal - cell carcinoma, common skin cancer that strikes more than 300,000 Americans each year and is usually caused by the sun, may recur in the same spot of skin or sprout in a new area as long as 10 years after "successful" treatment, according to research -recently reported in the "Journal of Dermatologic Surgery and Oncology." After removal of a lesion, most patients have follow - up care for a year or so, says study co - author Dr. Calvin Day. But a review of nearly 40,000 cases since 1947 showed that only half of all recurrences were in the first two years.

Left untreated, basal - cell carcinoma, 90 percent of which hits from the neck up, can lead to disfigurement and even death. The doctor advises former patients or those with a family history of skin caner to have a checkup a least once a year.

And because any sun could trigger new lesions, the doctor recommends that such people every morning daub their faces with sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or more, even if exposure is limited to a short walk.

Texas Fraternal Congress [TFC] officials and representatives of various fraternals recently participated in a ceremony at the State Capitol declaring June 14, 1989 as Flag Day and June 12 - 16 as Fraternal Week in Texas. District IV Sales Representatives Attend Seminars SFM Gene McBride conducted seminars in Seymour and Rowena recently. There was a total of 11 sales representatives in attendance who fulfilled their three - hour continuing education for the spring period.

The seminar concentrated on the principles of Universal Life Insurance.

Many areas of this interest - sensitive product were discussed to help our

sales representatives present its many features to our membership.

It is to the lodges' advantage to support the sales representatives and help them secure new members in order to keep the lodge growing in size and activity.

We thank the sales representatives for taking of their valuable time to stay current in their knowledge of our insurance products to better serve our SPJST membership.

District III FAC Seminar In Elm Mott

The Supreme Lodge Officials met with local lodge fraternal activities coordinators [FAC] of District III recently at Lodge No. 66 in Elm Mott.

The secretary was informed that a change should be made on our list of lodges for District V due to the merger of Lodges 170 and 81. This was Lake Jackson and Needville, with Lodge 81 being the number to be now designated on the list.

The officers expect to make some changes in our District Rules and Regulations, but that will be discussed further after the fall meeting.

Plans for the fall meeting, to be held Sunday, September 17, 1989 at Lodge 88 in Houston will be further discussed at a regular meeting of the officers of District V to be held July 17, 1989.

After the July meeting, details of the meeting will be published in the Vestnik.

Lodge

Friday night, June 2, 1989 was our lodge meeting which opened with the pledge to the flag recited by our membership and little Celia Dobecka.

The president called for reading of the minutes of our last meeting. Sister Lydia Dobecka read the minutes for Sister Barbara Hykel who was absent; also Treasurer Karen Kroll was absent.

Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report. He also gave a report on the last Board of Trustees' meeting.

The finishing touch of our lodge picnic was that all of the committees were appointed and in order. There will be invitation letters sent out to all of our members. We hope they will

cooperate.

Thank you cards were received from the Albin Pustejovsky family and the Nick Morris family. Sympathy card was sent to the Andrew Wachamman family.

There was no report from the youth leader because she was also absent.

Donations were given to the KC Picnic, the West Sokol Gymnastic Association, the Czech Chair and Battleship of Texas.

Two juvenile members were accepted to our lodge, namely, Christopher Aaron Marek, son of Gary Marek and his wife, and Traci Lynn Dobecka, daughter of Bobby and Peggy Dobecka. We welcome them and are glad to have them among us; we hope they will enjoy their membership in the future.

At this time there was a recognition of appreciation to some of our members who keep the lodge yard looking nice by cutting the grass, trimming hedges and trees. The families who usually do it are George and Josie Mae Straten and Cyrill Svrcek; so far this year, they have done this work 5 times because you all know that when it rains, the grass grows a lot. Thank you is not enough, they need more, more help from some other members who can and will help out.

Tonight's door prize winner was Johnnie Krizan. The other progressive prize names drawn were: 1st, $10 -Linda Havel, 2nd, $10 -- Susan Greener and 3rd, $3 Joyse Pinter.

Our next lodge meeting will be Friday night, July 7th at 8 p.m. and Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday night, June 30th at 8 p.m. You all come!

Special Meeting -Officers Of District V June 6, 1989 A special meeting of the officers of District V was called by President Evelyn Mikeska, held at Wyatt's Cafeteria on Shepherd and 11th Street in Houston on June 6, 1989. All officers were present including District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton and her assistant, Nancy Stuebing; other guests were District V Director Louis Hanus, his wife, Oleta Hanus, Mrs. Stayton's husband, A.J. Stayton.

The purpose of this meeting was to re - acquaint the officers who were newly elected in the spring meeting with the other officers and to make some plans for future meetings and activities. A- lot of emphasis was planned activities and their financial condition.

Lodge No. 18, Elgin President Dale Kessel opened the regular monthly meeting of Lodge 18 at 7:30 p.m. on May 16, 1989. Twenty - one members were in attendance.

Brother Rueben Krieg led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers showed all to be present.

Secretary Gilbert Kubicek read the minutes from the previous month's meeting. They were approved as read.

Correspondence was read from the Supreme Lodge pertaining to the new policy on convention delegates.

The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Alice Kovar.

Youth Leader Rubie Bowen gave a report on the outcome of the May Fete. She also stated that a representative was sent to the Taylor May Fete and one will represent us in Round Rock.

Financial Secretary George Lierdon reported that the membership stands at 625. Bill Schmidt made a motion to accept the new member, Sarah Lierdon Krause. Curley Gustafson seconded the motion.

The bar report was given by Chairman Curly Gustafson.

Chairperson Gladys Ticket Mogonye gave the ticket report.

Entertainment Chairman Leslie Gustafson gave the rental and dance

schedule report for May and June.

Building and Grounds Committee Chairman Bo Brian reported on the activities performed by the committee members.

The door prize was won by Leslie Gustafson again.

Youth Club Member Tracy Breitkreutz has recently graduated from Mart High School. In the fall she will start at McLennnan Community College in a cosmotology class. A graduation gift of $250 was presented to Tracy as appreciation for all she has done to help our lodge.

Congratulations, Tracy, and lots of luck in furthering your education.

President Henry Breitkreutz presented the $500 scholarship to Bobby R. Tlustos from Elm Mott. In speaking with Bobby after the meeting, I learned that he was valedictorian of his graduation class at Connally High School and plans to take pre - law at Baylor University this fall. Congratulations, Bobby, and all of us at Elk wish you the best.

Cleanup day has been brought up and cancelled so many times due to the weather. A number of our members have been coming to the hall in the day time, washing chairs, walls, etc.; for this, we would like to thank everyone of you. We are planning to clean the floor after the July meeting, if it doesn't rain.

Randy Pavelka and Stevie Dulock have finished with our tables. They took new formica and replaced many of our tables that had holes in the tops.

They all look like brand new tables.

We leanred that Cindy Pavelka has been sick and is now on the road to recovery.

Lodge No. 80, Holland Lodge 80 of Holland held their monthly meeting on June 4th at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President D.I. Bohac. After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, a moment of silence was observed for our deceased brothers and sisters.

All officers were present and minutes of our last meeting were read

by Brother Glen Latham. Reports were given and approved by members and it was recognized that the barbecue house had a new face lift.

President D.I. Bohac and Vice President Harold Rohde thanked everyone who helped to make this year's annual picnic a success. The picnic consisted of barbecue to go, plates, games for the young and the young at heart and a dance to end a fun - filled day. Plans are underway for next year's picnic. We hope to see you all there.

Plans were discussed for Lodge 80's next event which will be the District II Youth Achievement Day. YAD will be

held on July 9th with registration starting at 11:30 a.m. All youth are invited to come and participate.

Plans were made to have next month's meeting on July 5th at 7 p.m. due to the Fourth of July weekend. It was discussed and voted that, due to his illness, Sister Tina Renee Benner would replace Brother Joe Barabas, Jr. as Lodge 80 reporter. Brother Joe now resides at Will - 0 - Bell in Bartlett, Texas and would enjoy your visit.

Motion to adjourn was heard and seconded. Lodge 80 members enjoyed a one hour social hour after the meeting.

Amos Kadlecek's funeral was on May 18, 1989 at Forest Park Cemetery with Pat H. Foley in charge.

The Birthday Club Sisters served dinner for the Kadlecek family and their guests, also the Men's Club gave us a helping hand with Vice President Tom Marsh in charge. The Men's Club wives also brought food which was greatly appreciated, and Mike Trefell and John Vasula helped us so much in the kitchen. Thanks again for your assistance.

On May 20th the Central Sounds played at the lodge. Those who were in charge of this dance were Irene and Ernie Lewis, assisted by Annabel and Charlie Viet and Madeline Willgus.

The dance was well attended and the music was great .

Sunday, June 4, 1989 was a big day at Lodge 88. Every year the first Sunday in June is the day that belongs to our members' "Homecoming and Splash Day." The weather couldn't have been nicer and our youth, also adults enjoyed the pool very much.

Many of our members worked hard.

Our young men who sliced all the meat are Larry Green, Verner Sokol, Orman Wilson, Rick Lindsay, Gernald and Sandy Tomchesson, King Hegwood, Steven Lindsay, Bill Malak and Mike Trefell. Roy Stonaker did the barbecuing in Willie Wehring's barbecue pit and it was delicious. Roy, you get the credit for this delicious meat.

There were many other activities going on all afternoon such as the Birthday Club pastry booths, with Lillie Spies in charge and she had many helpers, Helen Hegwood had a spinning wheel for the officers and sales representatives, which was a big success. She had splendid help. We played games from 2 to 4 p.m. and Lowrina Lindemann was in charge of the drawing and with her help did fine too. Of course, after all that everyone, who was still able danced until 9 p.m.

Maybe that was a good way to relax.

The youth had a day planned, too, and I'm sure they will write about their activities because I don't have any details about them.

Homer Alexander and wife, Rita, recently attended a United States Air Force reunion in Houston.

All of the members at this reunion were in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Everyone of the members were from the 57th Bombardment Wing that was stationed in England, then to North Africa, then to Corsica, and finally to Tano, Italy at the end of the war.

Homer says that it was great meeting old friends of 46 years ago who were "youngsters," in their early twenties at

Sunday, June 4, 1989, was a most enjoyable day at Lodge No. 88 in Houston. It was our annual homecoming day -- "Homecoming With a Splash" and , what a splash it was! It appeared to me that more people than usual, took advantage of the swimming pool. The weather was just beautiful. This was the first time in a long while that rain didn't put a damper on outside activities at homecoming. The temperature was hot enough to make refreshments taste better, but not hot enough to take away the pleasure of the outdoors. The gentle breeze around the swimming pool and gazebo area made it very comfortable. Many of the swimmers got a good start on their summer suntans.

The youth group sponsored and conducted a beauty contest at 1 p.m. near the pool. Contestants of all ages up through 19 competed for honors and prizes in several age groups which provided thrills for their proud parents and grandparents. Truly, there were no losers in the contests; even if all of them didn't win a prize, they gained experience and recognition. Surely among the contestants there is a potential future Miss America but, if not, they are undoubtedly future workers, leaders or officers in our lodges, or at least the wives of some.

Our youth is the future 'life - blood' of our fraternity and deserves our support.

The noon meal, heartily enjoyed by all, consisted of barbecue with all the trimmings, including cole slaw, pinto beans and new potatoes. I wonder how many diets went out of the window; I know mine did.

Music for the day was provided by Lee Roy Matocha, first outdoors in the gazebo until 2 p.m., then from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Chandelier Ballroom for everyone's enjoyment and dancing pleasure. Good Czech - style polkas and waltzes, as well as some country western and big - band sounds, were enjoyed by the dancers as well as the listeners.

All during the day you could hear the chit - chat of friends talking, renewing acquaintances and discussing everything from personal problems to sports and current world events. Many conversations, believe it or not, were in Czech, Texas - Czech that is. I also heard some German and Spanish.

A special thank you must go to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. Without their untiring efforts, we just could not have had such an enjoyable day. I wish I could recognize each one individually by name but unfortunately, I don't know who all helped and to leave anyone's name out would be a grave injustice, so, if you

I'm sure our regular reporters will make more detailed reports of the day's activities, but the point I want to make is that this event was truly an example of fraternalism in action.

Fraternalism is brotherhood.

Brotherhood is the spirit of people working, playing and enjoying themselves together as a family. Our fraternity is, or at least should be, one large family. Oh, yes, we have our own private piques and quarrels, just like every red - blooded American family, but the spirit of fraternalism can overcome all of them and enable our lodges to function in harmony.

On Sunday, June 11, 1989 at 2 p.m., President Dennis Hermis called our monthly meeting to order with 43 members, 5 visitors and 9 children present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and all were present, except Youth Leader Lora Mabry. Then she read the minutes from our previous meeting which were approved with a correction.

Financial Secretary - Treasurer report was given by Sidon Tumis.

The Board of Trustees and bar reports were read by Rosie Schilhab.

The youth club report was given by Daniel Tumis We are happy to have had no members on the sick list for the month of May. Mary Ann Kieschnick reported that the Auditing Committee audited the books and they are now in order.

New applicants for membership in May are Robert J. Bielamowicz, Adam L. Rainer, James C. Querner, Earl A. Birdwell, Angela J. Birdwell, John P. Snider, Linda S. Snider, Sharon A. Snider, Theresa Zarosky; the sales representative is Sidon Timis with 6 new members.

District V Director and District V Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus was present and spoke to us on several items. He mentioned that he has been traveling around District V distributing scholarships; out of the 140 applicants submitted for scholarship, there were 57 scholarships awarded which totaled to almost $28,000. Brother Hanus also stated that the sales representatives are the backbone of our organization, without them selling the life insurance, our lodges wouldn't make much money.

Let's all appreciate our sales representatives.

Visitors recognized at this meeting were Joe Gambil, Mrs. Buri and Melissa Kubeczka. We also had James and Bryan Tumis who are members but are visiting here from Tennessee; these 2 fine boys are the sons of Harvey and Rita Tumis from Nashville, Tennessee.

Under new business, we wish to announce the upcoming barbecue and dinner with all the trimmings to be held at Lodge No. 142 on Saturday, July 1st, with serving time from 3 to 7 p.m.

June birthday and anniversary celebrants are: June 1 -- Elizabeth Hermis, June 17 -- C.V. Motl, June 24 -- Henry Hermis, June 6 -- James Templin; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Valka (54th anniversary on June 20),

Lawrence and Rosie Schilhab (23rd anniversary on June 25).

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting held Sunday, June 11, 1989 at 11:30 a.m. at The Gateway Restaurant, was one with very good fellowship. There were 15 members and 2 guests present.

President Lloyd House asked all to stand and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Henrietta Lowak gave the table prayer. A silent prayer for the loss of Nick Morris' wife, Dorothy Morris was observed.

Our condolences to Brother Nick and family for the loss of their loved one.

President Lloyd House welcomed the guests, Milton Koch and James Lowak. Guests are always welcomed.

Luncheon of choice was then decided before the business meeting, followed with good fellowship.

Everyone enjoyed their meal.

There was a surprise for Tillie and Milton Koch on their first wedding anniversary; a lighted candle on top of pie almode set in front of them, then everyone sang "Happy Anniversary."

President Lloyd House asked Tillie Koch to read the minutes of our last meeting. We approved the minutes as read. The treasury report followed.

Old Business -- Lloyd House read and discussed letters from the Supreme Lodge. Secretary Tillie Koch discussed the direct billing. A family outing to be held at Leakey (H.E.B. Camp) from June 25th to 28th asking for donations was also received.

For our next meeting place, President House asked for a motion to be made. Helen Zezula made a motion to hold our next meeting at the same place; Gateway Restaurant on Sunday, September 10, 1989 at 11:30 a.m. at Pleasanton, motion seconded by Henrietta Lowak.

President House then asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting.

Lydmil Ermis made the motion and it was seconded by Bette House. Motion carried.

Dear Members: The June meeting is history, and there were some very important discussions at this meeting First, the lodge will be in the Arlington Fourth of July Parade. Three convertibles have been spoken for and 12 people have volunteered to ride in them with some accordians and dressed in Czech costumes if possible. If you are in town and would like to help, get in touch with one of the officers or just come on down and watch the parade.

The members present voted to buy Inez Greenlees a Czech costume to represent the lodge at special functions in the future.

Members, also note that the meeting time was moved forward 30 minutes to 5 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month beginning with the July meeting on Sunday, July 9th at 5 p.m.; bring a covered dish, eat and socialize after the meeting.

Also, remember the family social night from 7 to 11 p.m. on the last Friday of every month; the next one will be Friday, June 30th from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be fun and games, so bring dips and chips for snacks while you are having fun. Bring the children and make it a real family night.

At this meeting, Rozetta Tary won a $25 door prize and Edd Kral won a $10 door prize and he donated it to the Dance Floor Fund. Marther Forresburg lost $5 by not being present; as you can see, it still pays to attend meetings at Lodge 183.

The Dance Floor Fund is growing and if you are one of those who likes to dance on a wooden floor, let the officers know or if you would like to donate to the fund, it would be very much appreciated; all of the funds so far have been donated by members who like to dance on wooden floors.

The June 3rd dance was great with the Mynarcik Band and everyone had a great time. Regrettably, Gracie and I couldn't be there because we were in Kemp, Texas attending a high school graduation of one of Gracie's grandsons.

The next dance will be July 22nd with the Country Eagles (country western) playing for your dancing pleasure so make a note and be there.

On the sick side this month were Inez's uncle, Edd, and Dorothy's grandson will have surgery, Jerry Mikus' wife is being hospitalized for possible surgery, Charlie Bragg's mother is very ill, and Geneva Bragg's uncle passed away. A special prayer and good wishes for these members were remembered and a speedy recovery is expressed to all of those who are ailing.

There was a discussion on the four lodge Christmas Party for this year and Lodge 183 will be hosting the party this year. It was decided that there will be a happy hour from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, the meal will begin at 12 noon, installation of officers between 1 and 1:30 p.m. and the music for dancing from 2 to 6 p.m.

If you have not been to one of the Christmas parties, you really have missed a great party and a chance to fraternize with a lot of your fellow SPJST members from all over the Metroplex.

Gregory Stiborek, son of Leon Joe and Angeline Stiborek of Grand Prairie, Texas, earned his Bachelor of Science Chemistry degree from University of Texas [Arlington] on May 20, 1989.

Bryan E. Cepak received his Aerospace Engineering degree on May 20, 1989, also from University of Texas [Arlington]; his parents are Kenneth and Annette Cepak.

Jeffery Nelson graduated from Duncanville High School on June 3, 1989; he is the grandson of Mrs. Gracie Kneschk of Arlington, Texas.

8/VESTNiK—Wednesday, June 21, 1989 Lodge 183 honored three graduates this year with a $50 gift to each one.

Gregory Stiborek and Bryan Cepak graduated from UTA and Jeffery Nelson graduated from Duncanville High School. This is a great milestone for each of these young men; now they can look forward to the first day of the rest of their lives.

To bring you up - to - date on some of the fraternal things the lodge has been doing this year for the first six months. The lodge donated a $450 hall rental to the Soroptimist International of Arlington for their annual fund raising activities, also $450 hall rental to Arlington Chamber of Commerce for their annual fund - raising project, $250 value of clothes donated to Arlington Charities for the recent flood victims in Arlington, $300 to the Association for the hearing impaired for their annual Bass Tournament Fund Raiser and Jerry Mikus will represent Lodge 183 at this tournament, $50 to Gregory Stiborek, $50 to Bryan Cepak, $50 to Jeffery Nelson, $100 to KC Council 6269 for the Susan Hillgardner Fund (a cancer patient), $300 to sponsor a Co - ed Softball Team this year (even if they didn't win the trophy, they really did a good job and represented our lodge well), $50 to the Czech Chair, $50 to the Battleship Texas Fund, $25 to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Dorothy Morris, and $100 as door prizes at the regular meetings; that is a grand total of $2,225 so far this year, so all the members can give yourself a big pat on the back for a job well done.

There are a lot of members of retirement age and a number reaching that age soon so I ran across this article of a child's view of retirement in a mobile home village. This teacher asked how they spent the Christmas holidays and one small boy replied like this: We always spend Christmas with grandpa and grandma. They used to live in a big brick house, but grandpa got retarded, and they moved to Florida.

They live in a place with a lot of retarded people. They live in tin huts.

They ride big three - wheel tricycles.

They go to a big building called the wrecked hall. But if it was wrecked, it's fixed now. They play games there and do exercises, but they don't do them any good. There is a swimming pool, and they go into it and just stand there in the water with their hats on. I guess they don't know how to swim.

My grandma used to bake cookies and stuff, but I guess she forgot how.

Nobody cooks there. They all go to fast - food restaurants. As you come into the park, there is a doll house with a man sitting in- it . He watches all day, so they can't get out without him seeing them. They wear badges with their names on them; I guess they don't know who they are. My Grandma says grandpa worked hard all his life, and he earned his retardment. I wish they would move back home. But I guess the man in the doll house won't let them out.

Rebecca Schwartz was accepted as a new member of our lodge. She requested to be transferred from Lodge No. 63. We are happy to have her join our group.

Our youth leader reported members of the youth club gathered aluminum cans for their fund - raising project.

They are busy working on their scrapbook.

The date for District VII family outing was mentioned; details will be in the Vestnik before camping time.

July 16th is the date for District VII YAD at the Bavarian Village.

The date of our next meeting has been changed from July 6th to July 10th. This is a social meeting which will be at the Guadalupe River.

Members are asked to bring a covered dish. Meat and drinks will be furnished by our lodge.

Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator read a letter regarding contributions to the Czech Chair and the restoration of the Battleship Texas.

Members voted to contribute to both funds.

Members were reminded of the District VII fall meeting to be held in Floresville; the date will be announced later.

Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of our lodge was held on June 11th at 2 p.m. at the offices of W and W Real Estate with President Ernest Wentrcek presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved as was the treasurer's report.

It was announced that our lodge would be presenting charter member, Charlene Helton, with the book, History of SPJST, for her outstanding service to the lodge as financial secretary from 1978 - 1988. Thank you, Charlene!

Members decided to donate $15 to the Battleship of Texas project which the Supreme Lodge will match.

The following is of special interest to those members not present at the June 11th lodge meeting. President Wentrcek reported that there have been several incidents of unscrupulous insurance salespersons around the state convincing SPJST members to cash surrender or exchange their SPJST policies for supposedly a much lower premium policy. In some cases it may be possible to lower premiums if your policy was issued several years ago, under the 1958 CSO mortality table. The facts are that SPJST current new life products will be as good or even better than what is being offered by other companies. To help our members, President Wentrcek suggested that members should contact one of the lodge sales representatives to assist with the review before any SPJST policy is cancelled or converted. He further pointed out that the sales representatives will be more than happy to review your insurance program and explain changes and benefits that may need to be made for your benefit. Lodge

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 191 was held on Tuesday, June 6, 1989. President M.C. Hughes called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved.

There were several items discussed, one of them being the anniversary dance on July 29, 1989. It was decided the theme would be "Fiesta - South of the Border." This is to be the one special dance of the year for the members of our lodge. Any member who brings their membership card for 1989 with them gets in free; any member who doesn't have their card has to pay, as do guests. Finger food, dip, chips and all kinds of goodies will be provided by members. Also on this night instead of having two members work all night as host and hostess, there will be shifts of 30 minutes each, divided up between several couples.

This should be a night with lots of fun.

The floor repair is coming along slowly, but surely. It is a bit hard on these working fellows to find the right time to work on it. When they have time there's something going on at the lodge. They are looking to have it finished by the anniversary dance.

Maybe luck will be with them, (or us) and it will be!

I See It

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina It is easy to take the privilege of American citizenship too lightly, or for that matter, take them for granted. I expressed some of my opinions on fraternalism as it applies to the SPJST to an article published in the April 5, 1989 issue of the Vestnik. There is another "ISM" that goes hand - in glove (or as we say in Czech -- "ruku v rukavice") with fraternalism, and that is "Patriotism."

Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines patriotism as "love for or devotion to one's country." It is not easy, nor is it necessary, to agree with all that our country does and stands for, but it is vital to have whole - hearted devotion and unswearing loyalty to the principles for which it stands. Despite all of its problems, weaknesses and faults, the good old USA is, in my opinion, the best country in the whole wide world.

Many of today's American citizens were born in foreign countries or are descendants of people who left their native land to find peace, happiness, security and prosperity in America. It is understandable that these people still have some kind of love and devotion to their mother country. The reasons people migrated to the United States are as varied as the people themselves are different from each other. When people became citizens of our country,

they assumed an obligation and duty to uphold the laws of our land and to support, with all of their strength, the principles on which this great nation of ours was founded. The freedom and privileges that were bestowed upon them are precious. Theirs is a unique spirit of dual patriotism -- loyalty and devotion to the United States of America and, at the same time, an unrequited love for their mother country. Certainly this is true of the Czech - Americans who actively participate in organizations such as the KJT,. KJZT, SOKOL, CEFT, CHSOT, CESAT, etc., as well as our own SPJST. It is difficult for many of us who were born in the United States, especially those whose parents were also born here, to comprehend that unique spirit of dual patriotism, but we must admit that it really exists, as it manifests itself in the revival and success of the many nationalistic ethnic festivals held throughout our country. We can see and feel it at most of our Czech festivals when "Kde domov muj" (the Czech national anthem) is sung or played during the opening ceremonies along with the "Star Spangled Banner (our own national anthem). This type of patriotism is a part of our fraternalism.

Most, if not all, of our stated meetings start with posting the United States flag on the dais near the presiding officer, then reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Has this become an expected, but meaningless ritual? I certainly hope not! It should be a meaningful experience that strengthens our patriotism. It occurs to me that we should make some effort to make patriotism more meaningful. Perhaps it would be a good idea if each lodge would have some type of patriotic program at a stated meeting near Independence Day, Veterans Day or Memorial Day. The program or activity could well be done by our youth groups. Or, perhaps each lodge could form a Patriotic Activities Committee to take charge of the lodge's patriotic program and on appropriate public occasions demonstrate the SPJST's belief in good citizenship -- Patriotism.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Merylyn Leus, Joy Hurta, Ella Eisman and Alice Bergen came to have sing - a - long with the residents.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith from Wallis comes to have Bible Study with the residents. In the afternoon, Frances Muzny, Ida Sliva, Lorene Novosad, Lydia Hortmon, Ida Gasch, Annie Stavinoha, Cecilia Fernandez and Bobbie Bates came to play social games with the residents.

The Damon ladies, Catholic ladies, Immanuel ladies and Sunshine ladies come on Thursday afternoon to have crafts with the residents.

A Special Place Day Care children came to entertain the residents during Nursing Home Week. afternoon, Lydia Hortmon, Freda Klawitter and Melva Hastings come to roll hair for the residents.

Saturday morning, May 6th, "The Expressions" came to sing to the residents.

Monday afternoon, May 8th, the Hope Lutheran Church women and Rev. Jensen of Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

Thursday morning, May 11th, Gladys Hix, Helen Valcik, James Little, Hilda Clark and Martha Marx (S.A.D.) went riding to Rosenberg and were treated with a donut and coffee.

Everyone reported a wonderful Mother's Day. Families came to visit and a few residents went out to visit with their family.

Nursing Home Week started May 14th with Mother's Day and ended May 20th. Monday morning, May 15th, the residents released balloons with their name and addresses in them.

Tuesday morning, May 16th, the Good Beginning Day Care children were unable to come and sing due to weather. Wednesday afternoon, May 17th was "Recognition of Volunteers." Rev. Bluford Weikel was our guest speaker. Administrator Harvey Marx spoke a few words to the volunteers and handed out certificates and recognized the volunteers for appreciation for their services for the year. Sandwiches, chips, vegetable dish, dips, egg salad tray, celery and cheese tray, fruit plate, cookies, pies, strudel, punch and coffee were served.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Thursday morning, May 18th, Special Day Care children came to sing to the residents. Friday, May 19th,was open house all day with special guests at noon, namely, Mayor John Stern and Chief of Police Arthur John Dorr.

Mayor John Stern was guest speaker to the residents.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of May include Jose Flores, Mary Loving, Ella Bacica, Helen Valcik and Antonia Reyes and staff, Willie Spradley.

The Birthday Party was held Friday afternoon, May 26th which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday."

The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres. St. Michael's Altar Society provided cakes. Helen Schnell provided a birthday cake for her mother, Helen Valcik. Volunteers Melva Hastings, Bobbie Bates and Lydia Hortmon helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during May. Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area who give services and communion and to the volunteers who perform services in the home for these residents.'

Monica Machu, daughter of Albin and Elaine Machu of Taylor, was crowned the 1989 May Queen. Darrell Mikulencak, son of Danny and Irene Mikulencak of Taylor, was the 1989 May King.

District V Youth Club Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, The District V kitchen sales at Lodge 88 on Thursday nights, which was for the benefit of the "San Antonio Express Trip," came to a close last Thursday, May 25, 1989. The youth thanks everyone for their support.

Now, the Lodge 88 Youth Club has been given permission by the lodge. to continue serving food from the kitchen for their own treasury. On June 1st they held their first official sale, and now they are underway.

On that Thursday night also, some youth club officers and members made signs and began preparing for the Sunday's "Splash Day." The youth club sponsored a beauty contest and a big splash contest. They also sold snowcones and had a face - painting booth. Besides all that, they took orders for their Gold C Coupon book sales, and they had information about the youth club on display.

Well, the youth club looks forward to your many endeavors to help them raise money; some available ways are kitchen sales on Thursday night, Gold C Coupon book orders, and Splash Day booths.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The monthly meeting of the El Campo - Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 Youth Club was held on June 8, 1989 at the WCEC Meeting Room and there were 7 members and 7 adults present.

The meeting was called to order by President Kim Kacel and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lisa Reck.

Minutes were read by Secretary Martha Bartos. Kim Kacel read a thank you card from Lori Holub and then Treasurer Danny Borak gave his report.

Perfect attendance awards were awarded to Lisa Reck, Kim Kacel, Martha Bartos, Sharon Borak and Jarred Dybala.

Leaders - in - Training Retreat was scheduled for June 9th at Val Verde; Kim Kacel, Danny Borak and Darrin Dybala were to attend. Our club will also be attending camp in La Grange on July 7th and 9th.

The June 11, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 29 Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Darrell Malicoat.

Jason Cervenka led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The register was read. There were 19 members and 6 adults present. Guest Mandy Tennill was introduced.

This month's social will be going to Schlitterbahn at New Braunfels on July 25th at 9 a.m.

The next youth club meeting will be July 9th at 3 p.m. at Taylor SPJST Hall.

Our meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.

Dear Members, Lodge 39 held our monthly meeting June 4, 1989 at 3 p.m.

The June 7, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 88 Youth Club was called to order at 7:36 p.m. by President Darlene Migl. Sergeant - at - Arms Julie Cayton led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment to recite the pledge and then sang the "Fraternity Song."

The register was read and there were 15 members and 7 adults present.

There were no guests present; only new members, the 3 new members are Shannon McGree, age 13, who attends Waltrip High School; Carrie Kadlecek, age 12, who attends Clifton Middle School; and, last but not least, there was Jennifer Welfl, age 7, who attends St. Rose School.

The minutes were read and approved. Angie Clayton gave the treasurer's report and the balance for this month is $58.50. Fund - raising plans are our monthly bake sales and hot dog sales on Thursday nights. This

Our Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported on our little project to raise money. Some of them are selling Gold C Books and having garage sales.

Then our DYC Marie Stayton reported that YAD cards must be returned to her at the end of June or else you cannot participate in District V YAD. Marie also gave out the San Antonio papers to be signed and returned the day of the trip before boarding the buses. She then reported that 48 persons are going to camp this year, which is a big improvement from last year; only 39 persons went last year. During the meeting we, the members, discussed trips we would like to take. Members suggested Six Flags

Over Texas, a weekend in Galveston, Disney World in Florida, the San Jacinto Monument and Splashtown, USA. Youth members enjoyed having cookies and punch for refreshments served by Mrs. Mary Lue Groendes.

The after meeting activities were taking pictures of our new officers and committee chairmen. Our next youth club meeting will be July 5th at 7:30 p.m. at Lodge 88. The meeting was adjourned at 8:37 p.m.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels Youth Club The youth members of Hill Country Lodge 185 met at the Bavarian Village in New Braunfels on May, 11, 1989.

An ice cream social and scrapbook workshop were on the agenda for our meeting. The youth were assisted by Youth Leader Theresa Haag. Youth President Chris Haag prepared the ice cream. Everyone enjoyed the evening.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On Sunday, June 4, 1989 members and guests of Lodge No. 88, Houston celebrated the official opening of our Lodge 88 swimmng pool. This day is known as "Homecoming With a Splash." The day began with dinner served at 11 a.m. The dinner consisted of delicious barbecue brisket with barbecue sauce, parsley potatoes, coleslaw, pickles, onions, jalepeno peppers, bread and tea or coffee.

As the day progressed, there was much to see and do. First of all, at 1 p.m., registration started for our beauty contest and big splash contest.

Then, at 1:30 p.m., the big event began. There were many entrants. All of our winners received cash prizes, and our first place winners of the beauty contest were proclaimed "Queens of Splash Day, 1989" and received a special banner.

Congratulations to all of the contestants in both the beauty contest and the big splash contest. You are all winners.

At 3 p.m., the youth club of Lodge 88 held an informative meeting encouraging the youth of SPJST to become active members of the youth club. Youth Leader Barbara Linney, DYC Marie Stayton, YC President Darlene Migl, Vice President Michelle Linney, Secretary Marlene Migl, along with YC Members Lindsey Michalek and Kristi Sokol, told the interested youth and parents of the youth club's many activities throughout the year.

We hope to see more youth getting involved within the lodge. Lodge 88 Youth Club hold their meetings every first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Our meetings usually run about an hour. I hope to see you there.

Throughout the day, our youth took orders for Gold Coupon Books. Since the books will not be in until early September, we suggest you put down a $1 deposit to ensure that you will receive a coupon book. The books cost $9; out of the $9 you pay, the youth club will receive $4. Support the youth club and buy a Gold C Coupon Book!

Invest in the youth, the leaders of tomorrow. We appreciate your support. We will be taking orders for these books until September.

To end the day, Lee Roy Matocha provided lovely dancing music to entertain our many members and guests.

Well, June is the beginning of the new youth year and, at our last meeting, our membership elected new officers for 1989 - 90. Our new officers are as follows: President -- Darlene Migl, Vice President -- Michelle Linney, Secretary -- Marlene Migl, Treasurer -- Angela Clayton; Reporter -- Melissa Havemann, Sergeant - at Arms -- Julie Caton.

Congratulations to our newly elected officers. We will be taking pictures of officers and committee chairmen as soon as possible, hopefully, at our next youth club meeting. Also installation of officers will be held soon. You will be contacted as to the date and time.

Camp is right around the corner and our youth are anxiously looking forward to it. On July 29 through August 1, 1989, our youth will be attending camp with District VII at Camp Val Verde near McGregor. Our LITS (leaders - in - training) are Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl, Brian Havemann, Tommie Wallace, Crystal Wallace and Angela Clayton from Lodge 88, Houston. We also have several who will be attending camp from Lodge 142, Houston and Lodge 172, Pasadena.

The San Antonio Express Trip scheduled for June 16 - 18 for District V Youth Club, which we worked so hard for, will be in the past when my letter will be published. Since October, 1988, the youth members have made over $2,600! We had planned to go visit the Alamo, see some missions, go to Sea World of San Antonio. During our 3 - day and 2 - night trip, we made arrangements to stay at Lackland Air Force Base. As I've mentioned before, our youth have all worked very hard to earn the money to go on this trip to San Antonio and we all were looking forward to it!

V Youth Club Enjoys Outing District

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Saturday, May 20, 1989, the District V youth spent a fun - filled day at Fame City. Youth members from Lodge 88 and some from Lodge 142 met at the Lodge 88 building about 9:30 a.m. to depart to Fame City. On our arrival with chaperones, drivers, DYC Marie Stayton, Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing, Jan Gloria and Elizabeth Hermis, Lodge 142 assistant youth leader, they met up with the youth from Lodge 172 and more youth from Lodge 142.

The first thing that caught everyone's attention was 93Q frisbees and zoo laces. They told us that later on they would be inside giving away even more prices.

After our thrilling adventure with the wonderful radio celebrities, we got our tickets. Our tickets were a bracelet that one wore that got them into everything free except bowling. Also, our wonderful, sweet, charming DYC Marie Stayton gave each youth and adult $2 to spend during the day at Fame City.

Then, until about 3 p.m. or so, everyone was free to do as they wished.

There were so many different and exciting things to do. They have a putt - putt golf course which is fun except when you accidently knock your golf ball in the water. Next, there is a really cool skating rink. A very popular attraction for everyone young or old was the bumper cars. For some odd reason, people seemed to get a big thrill out of bumping each other.

Among some of the other things featured at Fame City is Lazer Maze, where you go through dark rooms shooting robot things with a lazer gun.

Next door to that is Flash Flight where you ride on these seats shooting at red lights on the ceiling. Also, there is a Spaceship -- looking that is like a 3 - D Movie, where you felt like you are actually moving with it. Finally, among the free stuff , they have a movie theater.

Among those you pay for, there is a very big game room, some air Hechey games and a bowling alley; not to mention, they have plenty of food places ranging from taco to pizza to ice cream.

The day was loads of fun for everyone, and it was also a rememberable one. This was the first District V function that we were joined with the Lodge 172 Pasadena Youth Club. They are a great group of people and I am really looking forward to get to know them better in the future, especially at camp and and a couple of LIT Retreat. Don't forget that District V YAD is July 23, 1989 and camp with District VII is July 29 to August 1, 1989.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 19th at 2 p.m. in the Congregational Church of Medford with Rev. Lester McKeeman officiating. Burial was in the Caldwell City Cemetery in Caldwell, Kansas.

Lydia was born March 6, 1910 in Abbott, Texas to John and Anna Hegar. On November 18, 1929 she was united in marriage to Henry F. Krizan.

To this marriage two daughters were born, and they lived in West, Texas where they were engaged in farming.

In 1947 they moved to Dallas where they resided until her husband's death in 1967. At this time, Lydia moved to Medford, Oklahoma to be near her daughter and family and resided for the rest of her life. She was a houscwife and worked as a nurse's aide in the Medford Nursing Home.

Sister Krizan was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood, Czech - Moravian Brethren Church in Texas and a member of the Congregational Church of Medford, Oklahoma.

Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter and two brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Doris Jane Skrdla of Medford, Oklahoma; four sisters, Anna Kristine Junek of Temple, Texas, Mary J. Margulieuh of Garden Grove, California, Elsie Moravec of West, Texas, Willie Mae Truitt of Elm Mott, Texas; three brothers, Emil Hegar of West, Texas, William Hegar of Temple, Texas and Edmond Hegar of Troup, Texas; five grandchildren of Medford, Oklahoma.

Brother Krizan was born June 10, 1908, in West to Frank and Frances (Stephan) Krizan and he attended Gemania School in Austin County. He married Frances Clara Hess on June 10, 1934, in Brenham, who preceded him in death on January 19, 1988.

He was a World War II veteran who served in the European Theater.

Following the war, he owned and operated Fabric Care Service. He was

a charter member of the Buddy Wright Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Brenham. He also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 33 in Bleiblerville, the Berlin Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department and St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Preceded in death besides his wife, included his parents, two brothers, Frank and Eddie Krizan.

Survivors are son, Frederick Krizan of Mountain Grove, Missouri; son, Robert and daughter - in - law, Diana Krizan of Sugar Land, Texas; son, Dr. Adolph, Jr. and daughter - in - law, Judy Krizan of Murray, Kentucky; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Mikeska and Minnie Bateman, both of Houston, Texas; also half sisters, Lucille Jesek and Nora Britton; half brothers, George Meschwitz, Lawrence Krizan, Dan Krizan and Fred Krizan.

Pallbearers were his grandson, nephews and friends.

The family has designated St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Brenham for memorials.

Memorial Oaks Chapel Funeral Home in Brenham was in charge of arrangements.

In this lesson, we will deal with some errors that are frequently made by Czechs in Texas.

KDE—KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jede§?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word KAM is used: Kam jdeg ; Kam jede§? The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and

cannot be used to indicate physical action. Ex.: Kde to je? Kde bydlfte? Kde je nadraii? etc. And using KAM, we say the following: Kam pojedete vee'er?

Kam pfljdete po divadle? Kam jste gli po zabave, etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not.

SEM—JSEM We call words like these homonyms, they sound the same but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SEM means "here", or "to here", with ACTION, Ex.: Veera pfijeli sem.

Pojd' sem! Dojeli sem gfastne. All of these involved action in coming or getting here.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

Ex., Jsem 112 star gi elovek.

Jsem byl (byla) na vjrlete v horach.

Jsem se mel doble.

In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.

SPRAVA—ZPRAVA Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRAVA— means administration, or SPRAVKA, which is a repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.

Ex.: Statni sprava je urnistena v Austine.

The 13th Annual Reunion of Vaclav and Barbara Poboril Svoboda descendants will hold a gathering at the Seaton Community Center, Seaton, Texas, on Highway 53, eight miles east of Temple on Saturday, June 24, 1989 beginning at 9 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish: Meat, vegetable or dessert.
