PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the fraternal benefit societies of America have traditionally sponsored FRATERNAL WEEK as a means of informing their fellow Americans of the patriotic and civic activities of fraternals; and WHEREAS, cultural and spiritual values have long been recognized by fraternalists who have made significant efforts to preserve such values in our country; and WHEREAS, the 1989 celebration of Flag Day is significant because this year marks the continuation of the celebration of the Bicentennial of the Constitution and begins the celebration of the Bicentennial Anniversary of the election of the first president and the ratification of the Bill of Rights, which both guarantee and insure the freedoms symbolized by the flag; and

WHEREAS, fraternalists with a long tradition of reverence for the ideals of patriotism have promoted respect and recognition of the flag of our nation; now therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the seven days beginning Thursday, June 8, 1989 and ending Wednesday, June 14, 1989, be designated as Fraternal Week and that member societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America along with state fraternal congresses promote the celebration of Fraternal Week and call upon the leaders of local units throughout this Land of Liberty to apprise the nation of the ideals and objectives of the fraternal benefit societies, and be it further

RESOLVED, that on June 14, fraternalists throughout the United States be encouraged to highlight the birthday of the Stars and Stripes by organizing, promoting and conducting flag raising observances in cooperation with other civic groups; and be it further

RESOLVED, that this proclamation be sent to all member societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America along with state fraternal congresses and be communicated by them to their members.

In this issue in the Czech Section is a letter from Mr. George (Ji g) Kga (pronounced Kasha) from Karlovy Vary (known as Carlsbad, the health spa in Czechoslovakia). He is one of the writers mentioned in an earlier issue who was interested in exchanging letters with someone here in Texas. He

sent some pictures with his letter. He writes that Czech Highway Number 6 -- International Highway E 48 -connects the western most part of Czechoslovakia (border with Germany) to the Capitol Praha (Prague) and the road runs through this city of Karlovy Vary and also through Cheb. Approximately 163 Kilometers (Km) from Praha or 6 Km from Cheb on Highway 6 is a monument about 8 meters high, encircled by a group of trees, built in memory of the First Infantry Division of the United States. On the monument are approximately 770 names of United States soldiers who were killed in that area between February 8th to May 7, 1945. He writes there are Anglo - Saxon names such as Washington, Kennedy, Bush, Baker, etc. and Czech names -Tomko, Duda, Hribar, Kapustka, Kriz, Urban, Vojtisek, etc. He states that some of our readers may find some connection with these fallen honored men.

He concludes with these words: "Honor & glory to these fallen heroes" and hopes conditions between our two nations continue to improve.

Evidently, the First Infantry Divison had crossed the border after the battles listed on the memorial. With the aid of a magnifying glass, your editor lists the inscription at the top of the monument.

We appreciate Mr. Kasa's letter and pictures. We feel the readers will find them interesting. ***

District III Sales Representatives Attend Seminars

SFR Jim Wiest conducted seminars in Lodge No. 25 Ennis, Lodge No. 92 Fort Worth, and Lodge No. 66 Waco recently. There was a total of 50 sales representatives in attendance who fulfilled their three - hour Continuing Education for the spring period.

The seminar concentrated on the principles of Universal Life Insurance.

Many areas of this interest - sensitive product were discussed to help our sales representatives present its many features to our membership.

It is to the lodges' advantage to support the sales representatives and help them secure new members in order to keep the lodge growing in size and activity.

An Exchange Visitor From Czechoslovakia Accompanying this article are some pictures of Dr. Magdalena Bartosová who works at the University of Agriculture in Nitra, Czechoslovakia.

Magdalena was here on an exchange program sponsored by the Texas A&M University and spent one week in the Temple area at the Blackland Experiment Station.

Dr. Tom Gerik from the Blackland Experiment Station brought Dr. Bartosov to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

Dr. Tom Gerik will be going to Czechoslovakia for one month in June to study the Czech farming customs at the University of Agriculture in Nitra.

Dr. Magdalena BartosovA visited the Home Office and the Museum where Thelma Bartosh, the curator, showed her the museum, library and archives.

State Fraternal Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky and his wife, Irma, took our visitor to a local lodge function, shopping in Temple and other places of interest. We thank Frank and Irma for taking their time to host our guest.

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, May 14, 1989 at Mr. Gatti's with President Annie Vahalik presiding over the meeting.

Gaynell Chudej read a Resolution of Sympathy for our departed member, Marie Fabian.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed. Treasurer Helen Zabransky reported.

President Vahalik announced that Patricia Janak from our lodge has been selected to receive an SPJST Scholarship. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Janak.

Congratulations!

It was voted by the members to contribute to the Czech Chair and Battleship Texas.

Youth Leaders Gaynell Chudej and Evelyn Holy reported that April, May

DEAL! Personally, I'll stick to my belief, even if I have to admit that perhaps I could have been wrong.

I assure you that I am NOT wrong, however, when I call your attention to our next quarterly lodge meeting to be held on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.; this will be on June 7, 1989, and we will meet at the secretary's business office.

We need to check on the progressiveness of the Picnic Committees and see that all plans are intact and in full operational order.

Remember that the picnic will be held on the third Sunday, September 17th, at which time District I Director Brother Andrew Vavra, of Caldwell, will be here to present four (4) fifty year membership pins to our local lodge members. Don't forget to make your plans to be present. Forget whether "Wrong is Right" or "Right is Wrong.

Reports were given by the members who attended the District VI meeting in Taiton. It was informative and well attended. Annie Vahalik was elected first vice president of District VI and Erwin Holy as S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director.

Hilmer Galetka gave his report and the meeting adjourned. Refreshments were served.

Door prize winner was Nicholas Vahalik and a special Mother's Day door prize was won by Gaynell Chudej.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 11th at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m. as usual.

Lodge No. 51, Effinger "RIGHT OR WRONG?" Dear Members: Don't EVER let anyone tell you that "Right or Wrong." Even if you ever listen to Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, Ted Koppel or even Barbara Walters.

However, we do have a twelve member Congressional "Ethics" Committee who, it seems that they discovered that "Wright or Wrong."

At least I think I heard Peter say that they (the Congregational Ethics Committee in our National Capitol) have sixty - nine (69) counts to verify the fact. So, take it or leave it. NO BIG

The second quarterly meeting of 1989 will be held Friday, June 16th at 7 p.m. at Lone Star Hall in West.

Ladies are asked to bring a dessert to add to a meal which will be furnished by the lodge.

All members are asked to make a conscious effort to attend this meeting and take part in the activities of the lodge and share in the fellowship.

No. 63, - Sweet Home Lodge

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on June 11, 1989. This is a change from our regular meeting date of the third Sunday in the month because of Father's Day falling on that day. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home.

Besides the regular business, 50 - year members will receive their pins from one of the Supreme Lodge officers.

Door prizes will be drawn and someone with a birthday in April, May or June will receive a birthday cake baked by Earline Zabransky.

The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President Mary Alice Langlotz.

The flags were presented by Alicia Neslony and Jessika Tierce. Alicia Neslony led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto was recited by Ashley Locke.

All of us remained standing for a moment of silence for our members who passed away recently, namely, Chris Spence, Jr. and Edwin Blackburn.

Roll call by George Pauling revealed that all were present except Dorothy Shilling.

Our visitors were Blanche Lewis and Christine Klanika.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved.

Sister Jeanette Smith read the minutes of our Board of Trustees' meeting and they were approved. She also read a thank you note from Irene Reznicek.

She then, gave the prize award for the District III Horseshoe Pitching Contest: Men's: 1st place -- Bob Cervenka and Robert Seith, 2nd place -- Arthur Langlotz and George Pauling, 3rd place -- Charles Trickett and David Tierce Women's: 1st place -- Gladys Yates and Suzan Trickett 2nd place -- Sharon Tierce and Justine Marie Andreason.

She also reported there were 19 members present for our game night.

Our next game night will be Monday, June 12th at 7 p.m. Come out and enjoy the fun and fellowship. We hope to see you there and bring snacks.

The monthly meeting for April was held on Sunday, April 30th. President Eugene Hrncir called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Brother Frank C. Sacky and Brother Ronald Dale Hanzelka.

New members accepted were Virginia L. Bell, Leslie Kay Cox, Justin Lyn Lentz and one transfer from Lodge No. 117, Robstown, Christopher Todd Pavelka. We welcome all to Lodge No. 79.

We congratulate our member, Allen Klanika; he has been awarded one of the $500 SPJST scholarships.

The members discussed and decided to have a Mother's Day meeting on Sunday, May 14th and honor all the mothers with a meal at 1 p.m. The donation of $50 for March and April was voted to go to the local chapter for Alzerheimer's Disease.

After the meeting everyone enjoyed the slides of trip to Turkey that were shown by Helen and Oscar Hrncir.

The Mother's Day meal on Sunday, May 14th was quite successful, thanks to Brother Jerry Sijansky and his workers who prepared the delicious dinner. There was a good attendance of members and guests. We thank the youth club for their short program in honoring all mothers.

After dinner, the May monthly meeting was called to order by President Eugene Hrncir. All usual business of reports, etc. was taken care of by various officers.

District VII Director Thelma Hrncir said the Fall District VII Fun - Day is aimed for more adult participation such as volleyball competition, kolache bakeoff, quilting contest, horseshoe competition plus possible other activities. Our Fall District VII Fun - Day will be in Floresville; the date is not known at this time. There was a discussion about donating to Battleship Texas and Czech Chair and the membership voted to donate $50 for Battleship Texas and 10 cents a member for Czech Chair; it should be around $65. All members participated in a poll taken by Sister Thelma Hrncir, questions about members' ideas or what can be done to improve interest and participation in SPJST meetings and functions.

The lucky door prize winner was Brother Michael Majek. Sister Helen Hrncir won the extra door prize, a beautiful plant, donated by Brother Frank and Sister Carrie Veselka.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, June 18th at 2 p.m. at Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Hall. After the meeting there will be a "svacina," for which members are asked to please bring sandwiches and something sweet to eat. It was suggested that afterwards, members stay to play dominoes, cards, games, etc.

On Monday, May 15, 1989 Frank Amos Kadlecek, a longtime SPJST fraternalist from our lodge passed away. He had been ill for a long time, but it was a great shock to his family and many friends. An active member, he served as secretary several times, was well versed in lodge rules and regulations, and was on many committees. I must say Amos was a hard worker all his life and enjoyed the Men's Club very much. He was retired from the post office after 30 years of service and was a veteran of World War II. He served in Europe and received the Bronze Star. He was a member of Hlahol Dramatic Club and acted in many plays -- an excellent actor -- that hasn't been too many years ago. He is survived by his wife, Della, to whom he was married 47 years; three sons and two daughtersin-law, James and Anne, Charles and Margaret, and Johnny, who is a twin, and one daughter, Marian; one sister, Marie Rezek; one brother, John Kadlecek; and seven grandchildren, all of Houston. Burial was at Chapel of Pat H. Foley, with Father Rudy Beranek officiating. Burial was at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Military graveside honors were provided by VFW and American Legion. Active pallbearers were SL Vice-president Bernie Gebala, his nephews, Freddie Buri and Mike Pavlicek; his grandsons, Chris and Daryl Kadlecek; and Ernest Hermis.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men's Club.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 7, 1989 English Play Director Marie Stayton announced the English Play, "Grandpa's Twin," will be presented on October 22, 1989. Do mark this on your calendar. There will be more in detail about this event.

I had a nice visit with Grandma Hanka in the Needville S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. I'm happy to report that she is doing fine. and is in good spirits most of the time. She praises Mr. and Mrs. Marx, the administrator and his wife so much. She told me "I've made it to 94, so now I'm shooting for 95."

Some of her grandchildren had been to see her several days ago, which really perked her up, too. Mrs. Valcik had a birthday in May, so they had a party for all of them today.

Mother's Day was a beautiful day for most of you. I enjoyed my visit with my children in Weimar. Also my nieces and nephews and John and Pal Hilsher came.

On May 20th the Central Texas Sounds, a polka band, played at Lodge 88 and had a beautiful crowd. Lydia and Tom Marsh were in charge of the dance with Willie and Edna Wehring assisting. Everyone who came was welcomed with open arms. That makes you want to come back.

On Saturday, June 10th Al Pierson will again be with us. His band is super, with some of Guy Lombardo's music. Don't forget June 17th with Bobby Jones and on Friday, June 23rd the Texas Brew will play (a real country - western band, that is). Don't forget Saturday, June 24th when the Knights of Dixie (a great band) will play ballroom and mixed music. We are all looking for a great time in June.

July 16, 1989 is some time off as yet, but that is the date of the Blue Room Party from 4 to 9 p.m. Margaret Allbritton and Roy Stonaker are working hard to make this an evening of fun, good food (chicken fried steak), cocktails and dancing to the Texas Borderline $12.50 a person; the tickets are going fast, so don't delay.

Lodge No. 88, Houston May 8, 1989 Meeting President Jerry Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Flag Bearers Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl, together with Michelle Linney carrying the Czech flag, presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Ermis announced that we had no deaths the past month. Twelve new members were accepted into the lodge with two transfers to Lodge 172.

Under reports made by the officers, President Ermis encouraged all members to assist in making Homecoming with Splash a huge success by donating items for the country store and spinning wheel and, last but not least, BE THERE! Fraternal Activities Coordinator Alexander reported having collected 1,432 pairs of eye glasses, and read a list of clothes' donors. He encouraged individual members to donate to the Battleship Texas Renovation Fund and to the Czech Chair Fund. AARP Driving Course is being offered at the lodge on June 8th and 9th and, if you are interested, call Homer. Even if this class is full, I imagine he will see that another is offered. This man is busy --it is good he retired or he could never get it all in.

Newly - elected youth club officers are President -- Darlene Migl, Vice President -- Michelle Linney, Secretary -- Marlene Migl, Treasurer -- Angela Clayton, Sergeant - at - Arms -- Julie Clayton and Reporter -- Melissa Havemann. What an active group!

They netted approximately $165 at the garage sale to help defray the San Antonio Express Trip expenses and they can increase the coffers of the youth at Lodge 88. I am impressed at how well the reports are given and the poise with which they are given.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox gave a profitable report and graciously thanked Pearl Hanka for her reporting and advertising the dances in her letters. Observing his report, it appears more than one or two have been advertising. Congratulations, Harley, I know you are proud of your committee.

A special presentation by President Ennis and 50 - year membership pins were given to Kermit Lee Baca, Charles A. Jetel, Della D. Kadlecek, Harlan R. Maresh, Victor R. Mikeska and Frankie J. Svaton. Gilbert V. Baca, Magdalyn Bristik Ermson, John Hilsher, Frank Amos Kadlecek, Sylvester Klecka, Raymond E. Krampota, Alex D. Pokorny, Mary Sontag and Emily Trammel were unable to be present and their pins were mailed to them.

Mildred Holeman gave a resume of the accomplishments and contributions to the Society made by Amos Kadlecek and Della Kadlecek.

Amos went on to be with the Lord on May 15th. Amos was very active in the SPJST and will be long remembered.

He was a member of Hlahol Dramatic Club and had participated in numerous Czech and English plays since 1934. He served as Lodge 88's recording secretary for 21 years and District V recording secretary for many years. He attended many SPJST Conventions and his voice could be heard on any matter that he felt was good for the SPJST and, conversely, on any matter which he believed would have an adverse effect. Amos was articulate, well read, intelligent and my friend. He will be missed. He was a great fraternalist, and his footprints on the sands of time will remain evident for many years. My deepest sympathy is extended to his family.

Blue Room Party tickets went on sale on May 1st, so be sure and get your ticket for a bang - up good time on July 16th. You come to one; you won't miss another. These tickets go fast, so don't delay.

Birthday Club Sisters are selling tickets on how many M&Ms are in the jar that Lowrina Lindemann is carrying around. The first and second person coming closest to the number will receive a crisp $50. The third place winner will get the jar and candy. So buy a ticket --- they will appreciate your support.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann reported that swimming classes for elderly people are being offered this year. Swimming is good for our health and probably our arthritis, so go ahead and go for it. It will be more fun than the spa and less expensive. He also reported that the vacancy created by Tom Sellers' resignation had been filled by Royal Warnsch.

Building Chairman Tim Kostom announced that the architect had completed the plans, and that bids had been taken. After a lengthy discussion, it was the general consensus to hold the matter in abeyance until the June meeting .

District Director Louis Hanus gave a brief report on the meeting at the Supreme Lodge and announced that Mildred Holeman was the top salesman in Texas for the month of April, with second and third place going to Evelyn Mikeska and Sidon Tumis, respectively. He also announced that Universal Life would be paying 9 percent through July 31st, and the Annuity rates had been increased to 81/2 percent through July 31st.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 128 members with three guests present, namely, Pierson H. McLain, District V President Evelyn Mikeska and Gina Smith Baca. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the April babies. Anniversaries were being celebrated by Gene and Georgia Barcak and Vladimir and Tillie Mae Bily.

Door prizes were drawn and the meeting adjourned to the tap room and kitchen for refreshments.

Dear Members and Friends: It seems that the month of May is a month of many happenings. Lots of festivals, then there are the rains that come to make things grow. Also, with the rains come the storms. This has been a different kind of May this year.

First, it was hot then it turned cooler and then came the winds. We had a new kind of storm this May that I haven't seen since the 1920s. It was the cylcone which is just straight winds of every direction. It was about 90 miles wide and covered most of the northern and central part of Texas. It seems to have started in the northern part and then it swept through the middle part then headed to the eastern part. Also, there were some tornados but, luckily, they didn't do damage to the Fort Worth area. Around Lake Granbury, there might have been seven tornados that did lots of damage. Most of the damage was in an area called Lake Shore Trails. It was something that no one was killed because many mobile homes were blown apart, trees pulled out by the roots and I mean trees that could be 50 years old or more. Of course, the ground was wet due to some rains earlier but many, many trees were broken with limbs everywhere. It was something to see.

Most of the damage in Fort Worth was due to trees falling against the houses.

Some had a few shingles blown off but when there is wind of 110 miles per hour, there is bound to be some sort of disaster. There were people who didn't have electric power for as long as a week. The electric company had many men working around the clock repairing wires that were pulled down by falling trees. In the Possum Kingdom Lake area, it was also very bad. Boats were sunk and docks were destroyed. Lake homes were damaged and some were a complete loss. We have had several, inches of rain in the last two weeks and even today heavy rains are falling. It sure is hard to find time to plant in the garden because it is so wet.

So much for all the bad news, so let's think about pleasant things. It was a nice Mother's Day and I hope all the mothers had a good day and perhaps were able to have your offspring with you. We were happy to have our daughter from Florida here.

She will be staying with us until June

1st. We want to congratulate R.L. Alholm for receiving his Master's Degree from Texas Wesleyan College on May 12, 1989. He is the son of Lydia and Roy Alholm. I am sure they are very proud of him.

There are also some sad news that has to go with life so we have to take things as they come; Sister Bennie Bartek is not too well and has missed some meetings. I learned that Sister Millie Waters is doing better. We had a member who passed away recently, namely, Sister Mary Chaloupka, who lived in Crowley, Texas several years and had two sons. Her husband, Frank, passed away a few years ago.

Also Elmer Howard had missed some meetings due to not feeling well. We wish all who are ailing, a speedy recovery and good health in future years.

It was a surprise on May 15th to see the Atlantis space shuttle land at DFW Airport. It really is a sight to see. The big 747 jet plane with the shuttle on top was going back to Cape Caneveral, Florida to get ready to go up again sometime later. It was unexpected that it landed at the Dallas - Fort Worth Airport but, due to the weather conditions, it was the best place. It just stayed long enough to refuel and head east for home.

Our meeting date for the month of May was postponed because of Mother's Day so that was the reason it was held on May 21st. After the meeting, we had a new band to play for the dance following. The meeting started on time so we could get our business completed before the dance.

The officers always seem to give nice reports and any member has a right to express his or her views as how to better our lodge and to see that it's kept in good operating order. There are always some kind of improvements that need to be discussed. With this rainy season and the recent storms, our new roof is not being put on the building but, as soon as it clears up, that will need to be first on the schedule. We had some damage to the hall but not much and it will be taken care of after the roof is installed.

The meeting was a pleasant business affair. We had to discuss some important matters and the decisions came out like we thought would be the best. Our dance was fine; the Sulak Brothers' Band made their first appearance here. We all enjoyed them.

The hamburgers that the youth club with their leader prepared after the meeting were tasty; so were the klobase. The Ladies' Circle was very nice to donate Lodge 92 the large sum of $500. Many thanks to all the Ladies' Circle members.

The insurance sales representatives have been busy. Gordon Hubenak had written one new member, Martha Durham did fine with one new member. Raymond Hubenak kept up with them, also writing one new member and so did Evelyn Spacek.

Sunshine Lady Martha Durham sent birthday cards to 16 members over 65 years of age. Get well cards were sent to Helen Kratky who had surgery, to Bennie Bartek who has severe arthritic pains and to Joan Troxell who will have knee surgery.

Congratulations to Courtney Cooper who qualified for an SPJST Scholarship. She is the daughter of Lillian Matusevich Cooper and will be attending Rice University at Houston.

Melanie Krivanek graduated from Haltom High School. She is the daughter of Billie and Joe Krivanek and granddaughter of Inez Krivanek.

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio Report For May President Anthony Trilicek called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas. There were 31 members and 2 guests present.

The president reported that the District VII meeting held in San Antonio in April was a success.

The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given for the months of March. and April. There were no corrections or questions.

Members celebrating April and May aniversaries were Roy and Margaret Schauffele celebrating their 4th anniversary and Tom and Deborah Rau celebrating their 11th anniversary.

Brother Trilicek reported that he had visited Brother and Sister Jaroslav Kleprlik at the nursing home. Brother Kleprlik was reported to be in fine spirits. Sister Mary Valicek and Sister Mary Kostelnik were also reported on the sick list. Sister Kostelnik is recuperating from a broken pelvis at the Village in the Heights Nursing Home. OLD BUSINESS: Brother Trilicek passed out copies of our updated Rules and Regulations.

Brother Joe Stryk reported that a new flag pole and stand had been purchased. Brother Trilicek thanked Brother Frank Fajkus for making the stand that had been used to that time.

Brother Louis Jasek made a motion that Lodge No. 133 contribute money to the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund and to the Czech Chair as requested by the Supreme Lodge.

Sister Miloslava Phelps seconded the motion and it carried.

NEW BUSINESS: The president reported that Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar was suggesting that each lodge choose a month when guests would be invited to attend the meeting. Sister Viola Spacek made the motion that we have a guest day and this was seconded by Sister Miloslava Phelps. Sister Viola Kurtz made a motion that this meeting be held in October. It was seconded by Sister Viola Fajkus. Motion carried.

Brother Trilicek thanked Brother Joe Spacek for the frame he made for the lodge's convention picture.

It was decided that the June meeting be cancelled because of Father's Day. Birthday wishes were extended to Sister Julia Sefcik and Brother George Schultz for April and Sister Lucille Dlugosh for May. `Split the Pot' was won by Sisters Alma Trilicek and Viola Spacek.

Our travelers all arrived home safely; Sister Billie Jo Mason after a wonderful week in Acapulco, Sister Lisa Hopkins had a great week in New York City. Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan, Brother Tal Milan and Sister Leslie Poindexter returned yesterday from Sante Fe, New Mexico; they attended the grand opening of Housbarg's Finest Gallery where Sister Henrietta was named the "Top Seller of the Southwest." While Anneke and Peter Kakker from Holland were attending a convention in Los Alamos, New Mexico, they purchased her painting, "Stay Away from the Pond", to be shipped to Holland.

Sister Milan has also donated 100 of that poster to raise money for the "Sokol Gymnasts' Travel Fund" to the National Slet in Omaha and getting ready for the big one to be held in Paris, France, in 1990.

Congratulations for your hard work.

We extend our congratulations to Betty Jo and James Brown who were wed at Saint Martha's Catholic Church in Miami Shores, Florida. May they have a long and happy life together. Betty Jo is the daughter of Sister Agnes Merlick and the late Brother Joe Merlick and she is in Florida where she attended the wedding.

Lodge No. 187, Round Rock Working And Having Fun As one might be able to imagine, if you have a lodge that will seat approximately 1150 people, and you have dances and other activities on the average of 3 to 4 times a week, there is always something that needs to be cleaned and/or repaired. This keeps the members of Lodge 187 pretty busy.

If you drive by the lodge you will, more than likely, see one or more vehicles there, because someone is volunteering his or her time to repair something or beautify the lodge in some form or fashion. A lot of times this work is hard, but it is always enjoyable because you are involved with one of the finest groups of individuals in the State of Texas.

Work Day --- A fresh coat of paint.

During this spring's cleanup day, the lodge members pitched in to clean the kitchen and walk - in coolers and to perform maintenance and cleaning of over 900 chairs. The chairs were moved outside where they were turned upside down in order to tighten and replace any missing screws. Both sides of the chair were then thoroughly cleaned with a power cleaner, rinsed off, and then dried before placement back into the lodge. Over 50 members of the lodge (representing all age groups) pitched in to get this mighty task completed. At the end of the day, a covered dish meal was then enjoyed by all.

Relaxing after enjoying a big mew Don't let all of this hard work fool you. because the members and friends of Lodge 187, also know how to have a good time and they proved it during this spring's "TIP Party" which was held on April 16th. Everyone who had donated their time at the lodge during the previous six months were treated to an afternoon of fun, games, socializing and a catered meal. This was all done by the Board of Trustees in an effort to show their appreciation

to everyone who had volunteered their time and talents at the lodge. Over 200 individuals were present for the affair.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to take this opportunity to say "THANKS!" To all of those individuals who have donated their time to helping make Lodge 187 such a fun place to work and enjoy life.

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92 met on May 9, 1989 and the meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by President Betty Billington. We had a nice crowd.

Minutes of our April meeting were read by Secretary Clara Marchioni and were approved as read.

Wednesday, June 7, 1989-VĚSTNÍK/9 Then Flora Koci read an article about Senior Citizens ''My get up, has got up and went" very interesting and true to life. I wondered what happened to my "get up." Then Betty Billington read an article on "Changing Times" very few of us think about the changes we have gone through.

But remembering 60 - 70 even 80 years ago, we have seen a lot of changes.

Sunshine chairperson sent a get well card to Tillie Gillis, hope she is feeling better and also all the other people who have been on the sick list.

The hostesses for June 13th meeting will be Mary Palachek, Imogene Reaves, Florence Greer and Flora Koci.

The door prize was given by Pauline Morbitezer and was won by Mary Windham.

After the meeting ''Happy Birthday" was sung to Mary Dunlap, Inez Krivanek, Minnie Ruzicka, Joyce Tesar and Martha Durham.

Our prayer for the day was by Aurora Maldino. Then we all enjoyed a delicious dinner.

Our next meeting will be on June 13th at 10 a.m. All visitors are welcome.

TOCA, Inc. Schedules June 10th Meeting An invitation is extended to all Czech organizational leaders and all interested individuals to an organizational annual meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 1989 at the RVOS Home Office in Temple, Texas. l hope you are aware of this meeting date from earlier publicity or conversations with me or my fellow temporary officers, namely, President Jerry Valchar, and Vice President Glenn Hutka.

Some of you may have responded to earlier invitations from President Valchar for your affiliation with TOCA, Inc. and have paid the membership dues. In this case you need to certify who your two representatives will be attending.

There will be other reference material handed out at the meeting.

For those of you who may be hearing of TOCA, Inc. for the first time, or have not taken any action to affiliate, please consider this letter carefully; discuss it with your fellow officers and/or governing board members; and take the action necessary for your organization to be represented at the meeting.

Although we certainly would like to have organizational presidents as representative members of TOCA, Inc., we know your schedule may not permit your personal participation at this time. If such is your situation, we want you to know that presidents of voting member organizations have the right and are always welcome to attend TOCA, lne. meetings and speak, even if they are not the representative members. (This includes all Czech founded fraternal benefit societies, mutual fire insurance associations, CEFT, CESAT, CHSOT, etc.)

Whatever is your situation, we hope two of your officers - board members will serve as representative members of TOCA, Inc. to keep a two - way communication open between your office and TOCA, Inc. If it is possible to have both representative members from your leadership, you may designate any persons who you feel would serve well as your representative members.

It is important in your selection of your representative members, that you select at least one person who would be willing and able to serve as a director of TOCA, Inc. One of the purposes of the June 10th meeting will be to elect nine TOCA, Inc. directors from the voting (non - profit organizations) membership and five directors from the non - voting (informal organizations and individuals) associative membership. (These include representatives of Czech founded, but not chartered or incorporated, local lodges, societies, local groups, performing groups and organizations, representatives of commerical companies and business and interested individuals.) Following the membership meeting on June 10th, the directors will meet to elect officers, and together they will conduct the business of TOCA, lne. between annual membership meetings. It is anticipated that TOCA, Inc. Board Meetings would not be more often than quarterly, and these meetings would not be held unless action was needed on matters which could not be handled by mail ballot.

Please consider this matter and mail your dues and your representative member certification letter as soon as possible to: Jerry Valcar, Temporary TOCA, Inc. President, 12East Young, Temple, Texas 76501. If you do not decide on your representative members soon enough to remit by mail, please have the representative members come to the meeting early and bring the materials with them.

We need this information as soon as possible to expedite Nominating Committee action and the elections. If for any reason you cannot have representative members at the meeting, please try to have at least an observer at the June 10th meeting.

I hope we will have the pleasure of your attendance at the June 10th meeting.

From The District Youth Counselor District VII Family Outing June 25, 26, 27, 28, 1989 HEB Camp - Leakey, Texas The time is here to come with us to the beautiful hill country for fun, games, good food and swimming in the fresh spring water.

We will be staying at the camp site "Wind Song." This camp has the capacity for 40 people. We haven't had that many in the past, but who knows, hurry and get your name in.

Everyone is welcome. Let this be our Fraternal Activity. There is no better way to really get to know your friends than to go camping with them.

Anyone is welcome, pack enough food for those you bring, and be prepared to be responsible for their behavior. Be sure to bring a camp

application for any child you bring who is not your dependent.

I will supply the lifeguard, the insurance and see that you have a good time. We plan to learn to play "Taroky," the Czech card game that is becoming the rage among SPJST members.

Dear Members, The May, 1989 meeting of Lodge 66 Youth Club was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by President Mike Warren.

Jessika Tierce led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our register read 19 members and 8 adults present.

We turned in our camp forms and YAD forms; if you didn't make sure, you send them to Mrs. Yates. We also worked on our Scrapbook on Wednesday, May 24th at 6:30 p.m.

Make sure to meet June 6th at 8 p.m. to practice for talent show for the little girls; also on June 14th, and June 20th for practice.

We'll stop working the kitchen on June 1st. There will be a cake walk June 3rd. The Warren, Pavlicek, Yates, Engelke, and Neslony families are to bring the cakes.

Services were held Saturday, March 11th at Wilkerson - Hatch Funeral Home of Waco with the Rev. Trish Holland officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.

Mr. Macek was born in Rogers. He worked as an elevator mechanic for Dover Elevator Company of Temple for several years.

Survivors are two daughters, Becky Taylor of Bruceville and Brandi Johnson of Waco; one sister, Frances Massar of Holland and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Coufal was born July 9, 1899 to Frank and Rosalie Sontag. She was married to Emil Coufal on June 5, 1920. Three brothers and a daughter preceded her in death. She was a housewife.

Survivors are one son, Ben Coufal; five grandchildren, Evelyn Flannery, Joe Coufal, Betty Jurek, Frankie Coufal and Mary Coufal; two great grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Sister Taska was born November 22, 1898 near Bleiblerville to Thomas and Anna Siptak Mikeska. On October 15, 1919 she was married to Frank Taska in the Nelsonville Brethren Church.

She was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville.

Funeral services were held April 1st at 10 a.m. in Nelsonville with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. She was laid to rest in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

Survivors include a son, Hollen Taska of El Campo; son and daughter - in - law, Delvin and Bernice Taska;

features Veselka - Kasper Wedding Vows Read Miss Janine Yvette Veselka and Shannon Dwayne Kasper were united in marriage on Saturday, April 22, 1989 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor. The Rev. Lonnie Urban officiated the ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Veselka of Taylor.

The bridegroom is the son of N. and Mrs. Emil J. Kasper of Route 1, Hutto. He is the grandson of Herman Roehr and Mr. and Mrs. Perry Becker.

The church altar featured a tall, white ceramic vase arranged with rubrum lilies, gladiolas and greenery.

The side altars were decorated with impatients and candelabras with greenery and baby's breath. The designated pews were marked with white bows and baby's breath.

Wedding music was provided by Allan Meyer, A.Jay Glynn and Karen Bohac.

Teri Packard attended the bride as maid of honor. Matron of honor was Amy Plast. Bridesmaids were Beverly Stiba, Annette Maruska, sisters of the bride, Yvette Maruska and Dawn Kasper, sister of the groom.

They wore white satin tea - length dresses designed with French pouf sleeves, wrapped, cinched bodices decorated with a satin bow at the side, and full skirts.

The attendants carried bouquets of rubrum lilies, orchids, statice and fuschia ribbon.

Kelli Pepper was flower girl. She wore a white satin dress designed with a dropped V - waistline and puffed sleeves. She carried a white wicker basket ornamented with fuschia rosettes.

Greg Kasper served his brother as best man. Groomsmen were Craig Pepper, Joe Knapp, Steve Harrison, Doc Scott and Stephen Plast.

Ushers were Gary Maruska, Ernie Stiba, Kevin McFarlin and Sidney Ging.

Eric Stiba was ring bearer and acolytes were Matt Maruska and Bradley Barron.

The bride entered the church with her father. She had chosen an imported designer gown of white satin and re - embroidered lace. The fitted bodice was trimmed with beaded lace and featured a scalloped, V - shaped neckline and back with a large bow decorating the back, waistline. The

From the dropped basque waistline fell a full skirt adorned with a scalloped border lace. The cathedral length train featured lace cutwork.

Her fingertip veiling was held in place by a silk flower wreath and pouf of illusion.

The bridal bouquet consisted of gardenias, dendrobium orchids, stephonitis and greenery.

Following the ceremony, a reception was hosted at the SPJST Hall in Taylor. Members of the houseparty included Janine Nemec, Michele Filla, Sandy Pepper, Dolly Pepper, Georgia Kasparek, Debra Urbanek, Jolynn Schaefer, Claire Bartosh, Nancy Stover, Angela Allen, Janice Meinzer, Darlene Frinier, Deandra Barron, Donna Johnson, Lana Volek, Dana Volek, Martha Hobbs, LaVerne Scott, Cathy Schroeder, Sharon Holman, Cheryl Hammon, Julie Bachmeyer, Barbara Anne Barnes, Claire- Nimon, Lisa Meyer, Deborah Alsobrook and Elizabeth Ann Meyer.

The hall was decorated with a three tiered fountain arranged with green plants and bougainvilleas. The entrance featured a bird bath with lattice panels. Guest tables were decorated with ivy and bows.

Dance music was provided by Lonesome Dove.

The bride is a 1984 graduate of Taylor High School and holds a BBA in marketing management from the University of Texas at Austin, where she served as financial officer for Phi Chi Theta. She is employed as a sales representative for Deluxe Check Printers.

The bridegroom is a 1982 graduate of Hutto High School and served as a Co - op student with TU Electric

graduating from TSTI in Waco in February, 1989.

The couple left on a tropical wedding trip.

A poolside rehearsal dinner was held in the garden at the home of Gary and Annette Maruska. Hurricane lamps lit the party area. A fajita dinner was served.

A bridesmaid luncheon was held Saturday morning at the home of Elizabeth Meyer. Hostesses were Ms. Meyer, Evelyn Nimon, Vicki Roddy, Martha Jirosek and Claire Nimon. Cut work tablecloths laid the tables and spring flowers were used in multicolored baskets for centerpieces.

1989 World Hockey Tournament Is Now A History The

The Ice Hockey Championship of 1989 ended after a 2 - week grueling schedule on May 2nd in Stockholm, Sweden.

The ice hockey team of Czechoslovakia lost unluckily in a tight match with Canada on the final day of the tournament and finished third, winning the bronze medal. It accomplished one win (against Sweden) and lost twice.

Czechoslovakia's total score was 5 goals for and 6 goals against. This means that those two losses must have been heart - breakingly close. Even though the exact scores of the other matches Czechs played are not available because of disinterest of the Sports News Houston Media in ice hockey, it is clear that the "checking"

Canadians second: Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings scored one goal and added two assists as Canada edged Czechoslovakia 4 - 3 to win the silver medal in the World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.

The unbeaten Soviet Union, which wrapped up the title Saturday, beat Sweden 5 - 1 in the medal - round finale.

The Soviets' Viacheslav Fetisov, who hopes to play for the New Jersey Devils next season, was named the top defenseman of the tournament.

Goaltending honors went to Dominik Hasek of Czechoslovakia and Brian Bellows of Canada was named the Number One forward.

At the end of this short sports article let me share with you a little item of interest from the column "The informed source" by L.M. Boyd in the Houston Post, Section A - 2, page 2, where it appeared a few days ago.
