Author Unkn What is a mother? It takes a mother's love to make a house a home, a place to be remembered, no matter where we roam. It takes a mother's patience to bring a child up right, and her courage and her cheerfulness to make a dark day bright. It takes a mother's thoughtfulness to mend the heart's deep "hurts," and her skill and her endurance to mend little socks and shirts.

It takes a mother's kindness to forgive us when we err, to sympathize in trouble and bow her head in sorrow.

It takes a mother's wisdom to recognize our needs and to give us reassurance by her loving words and deeds.

It also takes a mother's endless faith, her confidence and trust to guide us through the pitfalls of selfishness and lust. And that is why in all this world there could not be another who could fulfill life's purpose as completely as a mother. *** Mother and Home -- It has been said that the two most loved words in the dictionary are mother and home.

Mother is a wonderful word. It takes a great deal of wisdom and courage to be a mother. It also takes time. Time to wash faces, to brush little one's hair, patch jeans, keep a house clean and inviting, nourishing meals planned and prepared, clothes washed, ironed and mended. How alert, how active these children are. It takes time to discover what goes on inside the heads and hearts of boys and girls. How receptive they are to things of the spirit. How difficult they are at times, too, and how inadequate we often feel in dealing with them. Yes, it takes patience and understanding, too, to be a mother.

While we are busy with preparations for dinner, while putting the finishing touches to a birthday cake, or perhaps in the darkness of the night during a wakeful hour, the realization sweeps over us suddenly and poignantly that these children of ours will not be children in our homes always. There will come a tomorrow -- much sooner than we realize -- when our homes will no longer ring with the carefree laughter of our children. *** In last week's editorial, we mentioned that our sales representatives render a service to all of our members by helping them with their many needs, especially, in the life insurance field. In our last sales' seminar, SFR Jim Wiest pointed out something very important and that is the fact that we, sales representatives, need to contact our members and review their insurance programs with them.

Recently, a sales representative related that he had contacted a young

student with a 20 - year pay life policy soon to be paid up. He contacted the parents who were eager to take out additional insurance, however, they wanted to keep the 20 - year pay life intact because it was bought at a younger age at lower premiums, of course. It is a certain fact that most people, including, many of our members, rarely give their insurance needs any thought after they have purchased the insurance initially and most appreciate it if a sales representative brings it to their attention for review. Very few of us realize how times have changed and costs have risen with inflation. Many of you do not realize that insurance may be used as an investment for their "Golden Years" and does not necessarily have to be used only as a "death benefit." Think about that; President Franklin D. Roosevelt looked into the future in 1933 when he proposed the plan of "Social Security." Where would many United States citizens be, were it not for Social Security? We can think of IRAs, Annuities, Universal Life, Lone - Pay Life and ALL insurance plans in the same perspective. *** Why would anyone use sunscreen lotion and then get dressed? The idea is not so farfetched. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 10 percent of skin cancers occur on the neck, torso and other parts of the body normally covered by clothing. While loosely woven, light - colored togs may help against heat, they do not totally screen out burning rays. A cotton T shirt, for example, has a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 12, less than the SPF minimum of 15 recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Sunhounds should apply sunscreen under their clothing, too, recommends a dermatologist at Harvard Medical School.

One common sunscreen ingredient, paraminobenzoic acid (PABA), tends to discolor fabrics, so look for nonstaining PABA derivatives such as glyceryl or padimate. You can bolster your defenses by wearing dark fabrics, or synthetics such as nylon, that in general are better than light - colored and cotton clothing at blocking ultraviolet light. *** has Cambridge BioScience developed a highly accurate blood test for Lyme disease, a tick - borne illness that can cause serious nervous disorders and is hard to diagnose.

Your doctor can administer the test for about $30. ***

Newsbrief Sister Dorothy (Liska) Morris, 53, died Wednesday morning, May 3rd in a Temple hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5th at the. St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone. She is survived by her husband, former Vestnik Editor and Past Supreme Lodge President Nicholas A. Morris, a daughter, four sons, grandchildren, numerous relatives and many SPJST members and friends. Sister Morris was a member of Lodge No . 24, Cyclone. On behalf of our SPJST Society, we wish her eternal rest in peace and may we honor her in memory forever. The family requests that memorials be made to The American Cancer Society.

District V Sales Representatives Attend Seminars SFR Helen Hegwood conducted seminars in Houston and Needville recently. There was a total of 40 sales representatives in attendance who fulfilled their three - hour continuing education for the spring period.

The seminar concentrated on the principles of Universal Life insurance.

Many areas of this interest - sensitive product were discussed to help our sales representatives present its many features to our membership.

It is to the lodges' advantage to support the sales representatives and help them secure new members in order to keep the lodge growing in size and activity.

We thank the sales representatives for taking their valuable time to stay current in their knowledge of our insurance products to better serve our SPJST membership.

Sister Wecheta cutting birthday cake with daughter Nollie Tiedt assisting.

Mrs. Marie Wecheta Celebrates 96th Birthday Marie Prasifka Wecheta of Fayetteville, Texas celebrated her 96th birthday April 14, 1989 at her farm home in Fayette County with her family members and friends, with approximately 50 guests attending.

Sister Wecheta's SPJST policy passed away December 24, 1979. She has one daughter, Nollie and son - in law, Marvin Tiedt and one son, Harry

endowed and she was presented a check by District I Director Andrew J. Vavra.

Sister Wecheta joined as a member of SPJST Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville, in July 1918 making her a member of this Society for 70 plus years; her parents, Charlie and Marie (Janak) Prasifka were charter members of Lodge No. 1.

Sister Wecheta married Joe Wecheta on October 27, 1914. Mr. Wecheta and daughter - in - law, Bernice Wecheta; also grandchildren, Harry Lee Wecheta of Fayetteville; one granddaughter, Wanda Fluitt of La Grange; one great - grandchild, Cameron Fluitt; three sisters, Millie Hawes (94), Bessie Sedlmeyer (92) and Jennie Prasifka (89), all of Wharton, Texas. Two sisters, Millie and Jennie, were present at the party.

Sister Wecheta is very alert and active and lives alone on her farm.

This director and his wife enjoyed the occasion and the fellowship with these wonderful people. I would like to thank Nollie for the refreshments and in preparing this party; also, I thank Chili Kubena for the information on the family and his effort in planning this get - together.

Sewing over 100 quilts in different patterns and stitching over 50 quilts, the 83 - year - old Mrs. Pavlas proudly is displaying her artistic work which 'laced first in judging and admits that is is just a hobby for her who loves to tilt with materials to occupy her ne, especially after losing her isband 5 years ago when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Cottonwood Lodge 6 where she is a member since June 15, '954.

Annual Polka Fest

The first Annual Polka Fest will be held Sunday, May 21, 1989 at the Inez Community Center on Highway 59 midway between Victoria and Edna sponsored by SPJST Lodges No. 97 Placedo and Inez No. 143.

Admission will be $5 per person for adults and $1 for children 12 years and under.

No. 142, Houston Recognizes Recipient Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: We finally got some of that much needed rain and also some hail.

A reminder of our Mother's Day dinner Sunday, May 14th. There will be prizes for the youngest and oldest mother.

The lodge will furnish the meat dish and members bring a covered dish, salad or dessert of your choice; dinner is at 1 p.m. and the meeting will follow at 3 p.m.

The last couple of days were sad ones for some of our members, their family and friends. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Brother Frank Schramm and family on the loss of his wife, Sister Francene Schramm, and to Brothers Samuel Hunter, Jr., Gregory Hunter and Sister Mary Alice Fridge and their mother, Alice Jo (Gregory)

Hunter, on the loss of their father Samuel Hunter, Sr. and Alice's husband who died suddenly Saturday morning. Sam, as he was known to all of us, was also the son - in - law of Brother Joe and Sister Elizabeth Gregory. May they rest in eternal peace and may their memories live among us.

We extend congratulations to Brother Donald Steinman who, along with Sister Bonnie, was in New Orleans this weekend for Donald to accept his award from Toyota for his 3 million dollar sales (2 million was the quota). This is Donald's 10th straight year to receive this award. Keep up the good work. We are proud of you.

We want to wish all the mothers far and near a very happy and healthy Mother's Day. So until keep smiling.

News From Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena Dear Members: The monthly meeting for April 26th of Lodge 172 began at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday with President Alvin Sefcik's welcome in Czech.

Vice President Irving Theiss led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All executive officers and committee chairpersons were in attendance.

Correspondence was received from the Supreme Lodge regarding the State Sales Tax Exemption and a thank you note from State Youth Director Claudette Reese on her visit to our lodge.

Secretary Lillia Mae Peter read the minutes of the last monthly meeting and the last executive meetings; these were approved as corrected.

Entertainment Chairperson Helen Wallace, Bar Chairperson Vicki Dressler, Kitchen Chairperson Esther Kowlaski and Rental Chairperson Jerry Dressler all gave favorable reports on last month's business; this also included the treasurer's report.

Under old and new business topics, Jerry Dressler reported the purchase of a CD for Lodge 172 at a high note of interest for 9 months, the delay of awarding a roof repair contract until our next executive meeting by Chairman of the Trustees Willie Walla and the purchasing of locking covers for air - conditioning thermostats by Joe Krenek.

Our Youth Club held their first meeting this same night, starting at 7 p.m. and joined the members' meeting to report the election of youth leaders.

The results will be given at a later date by the Youth Club reporter. Thanks to Assistant Youth Leader Dorothy Watkins and DYC Marie Stayton for getting the Youth Club started at their first meeting.

Work Day was set for Monday, May 1st and several projects were discussed, so we looked for a good turnout from the members on that day.

Liquor liability insurance is being considered and we hope to purchase a policy covering Lodge 172 in the near future.

Our social dinner and dance held April 16th for Lodge 172 members was a success and we had a good attendance. Thanks to Brother Joe Krenek for a job well done in the kitchen that day.

Our next dinner and dance will be September 24th, this will be a covered dish with meat furnished by our lodge as before.

The lodge cleaning will be done this year by Candy and Larry Bland.

The Rules and Regulations Committee asked for more time to work on the R&Rs. Libbie Bartek sent a get well card to Sandra Brown and a sympathy card to Mrs. Jerry Pechal and family.

Permission was granted to the Youth Club for the use of our hall for May 12th for an end - of - the - year school dance.

After a short meeting, the meeting adjourned to another delicious meal by Henry and Alex.

SPECIAL NOTICE Dear Members: Due to Mother's Day falling on the same day as the scheduled monthly meeting, the officers and active members voted not to have a regular meeting in May. The next meeting will be on the second Sunday, June 13th at 5:30 p.m.; bring a covered dish for the social. Mark your calendar and plan to attend.

There were 21 members at our Friday night social April 28th. There were games and fun and also a special birthday wish to Charles Bragg who had his birthday. Happy birthday, Charlie, and many more. There were plenty of dips and chips for snacks and the lodge gave each a free drink to go with the snack.

Remember the last Friday of every month is the 7 - 11 social night beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 11 p.m., so plan to attend the next one which will be Friday, May 26th.

Since my last report that fishing was poor, things have improved. Gracie's son, Andy Nelson, of Seven Points traded for a 10 - foot by 40 - foot barge with a 65 horse motor on it. He and his wife went out Friday, April 21st and came back Saturday morning with 50 sand bass and then Gracie and I went out Saturday and came back with 49 sand bass about 2:30 a.m. Sunday and cleaned fish until 6:30 a.m. Sunday before going to bed. I have been busy, lately; I have traded for another van and am trying to get it ready to do some traveling but I am having to take my uncle to VA Hospital in Temple about twice a month and keeping the financial end of Lodge 183 balanced and also taking time out for some fishing. I haven't finished the van. I suppose the things that I don't finish today, I can start tomorrow.

The lodge still needs members to suggest ways to keep things rolling along smoothly. Summer vacations are coming on and everyone is thinking of vacations, but the lodge and its bills keep going on at the same pace, so give it some thought and help in any way you can.

Speaking of vacations, a fellow passing through Juniper Junction was admiring Uncle Eph's farm, "Mighty pretty place you have here," he said.

"Yep" said Uncle Eph, "but it's so far out of town. Fellow got to walk three miles to get a glass of whiskey." "Why don't you get a jug of whiskey and keep it in the house?" the stranger asked. "Mister," Uncle Eph said sadly, "Whiskey don't keep."

In March, several Bob Zvolanek's in - laws and friends surprised Bob with a nice party on his 80th birthday in the home of Libbie Wisniewski. There were 16 present.

The Ennis Polka Festival will be over before this letter is published. I hope that everyone who attended the festival had a great time and that it was the best ever.

The Ennis Sewing Circle met February 9th, March 9th and April 13th. Our attendance in February was fairly low, however, the March and April meetings were well attended. Our men guests were Alvin Elsik, Milan Dujka, Joe Houdek, Frank Holley, Bob Zvolanek, Bill Foit, Wesley Tupy, Jerry Kohn and Ernest Huff.

President Sadie Kubin presided at all the meetings. After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, a moment of Czech silence was observed in memory of Alice Janicek, Agnes Houdek and Victoria Moucka.

At our February meeting, Sister Alief Evening School under auspices Georgia Tupy read the minutes and of AISD (Alief Independent School also took the minutes in the absence District) is again offering a of Secretary Ella Zmolek. CESAT Annual Meeting The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) held their annual meeting at the SPJST Hall in Taylor, Texas on Saturday, April 15, 1989.

Thadious Polasek, chairman of the Education Committee, reported that the Czech language is being taught in eleven locations in southeast Texas, with a total of about 193 students. The Czech language programs at the various schools are as follows: Alief Evening School -- Teacher John Karas, 11 students in one evening class which included beginners and advanced students.

Alvin Community College -Teacher Bernard Pivonka, total of 16 students.

Austin Community College -Teacher Marcella Winnett, 7 - week course with 10 students.

Flatonia Junior High - 7th grade level -- Teachers Thadious Polasek and Miss Lisa Yount, a total of 25 students.

University of Texas (Austin) -Slavic Language Department, teacher Woody Smith, full college credit courses with total of 24 students.

Victoria Junior College -- Credit course in Czech 401 - Teacher Thadious Polasek, 15 students.

Westchester Education Center (Houston) -- Teacher Charles J. Heyda, 10 students in beginners class, 12 students in advanced class.

San Antonio -- Teachers Gloria Sell and Helen Hyzak, 25 in beginners class, 20 in advanced class.

SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston -Teacher William E. Souchek, approximately 25 students.

St. John High School (Ennis) -Teacher Julia Prodebrasky.

In recognition of the effort being made by these teachers to maintain the Czech language and culture in Texas, Mr. Roger Kolar, president of CESAT, presented each of the teachers with a framed testimonial at the afternoon meeting of the University of Texas Czech Club program in the same hall.

Over the years CESAT has maintained a student loan program which has been very successful in helping needy students to go to college.

The organization will continue to make student loans but will put more emphasis on scholarships and outright grants for students of the Czech language and culture.

Two thousand dollar scholarships are being made available by CESAT for the 1989 - 90 school year. Students should apply by June 30, 1989 to the Secretary of the Council for Higher Education, Clinton Machann, 1029 Walton Drive, College Station, Texas 77840.

Applications for the Czech language summer course at Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia are now being reviewed by Charles Heyda, the U.S. Coordinator for the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute.

Twenty students will leave for Prague on July 3rd and return on July 28th after 3 weeks of study and tours of Prague and Czechoslovakia.

CESAT also makes grants of up to $300 to needy students who are approved for this study at Charles University.

Professor Joe Skrivanek, Caldwell, reported that the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) is nearing its goal of $500,000 to establish a chair in Czech language studies at a Texas university. Roger

Kolar, CESAT president, presented Professor Skrivanek with a check for $18,000 as CESAT's contribution to this important program.

In 1990 New Orleans will stage a Festival honoring the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famous Czech composer Antonin Dvorak.

John Novak, U.T. Phd. candidate and member of CESAT, has been requested to participate in the planning of this Festival.

Podluian From Czechoslovakia To Tour Texas The Czechoslovak Folklore Ensemble of Podlu2an from Breclav (Moravia) from Czechoslovakia will make a tour of Texas in July.

The program of the Podlu2an, 18 member ensemble will present original songs, dances and folk culture of its native country. The youth of the region from which Podlu2an comes from, like to dress in traditional special colorful costumes on occasions, such as wedding ceremonies, national feasts, folklore festivals, etc.

The tradition of an ancient folk culture is still alive in Czechoslovakia.

One of the greatest festivals in Europe, is the Moravian Straznice and Slovakian Vyhodna, are visited by a great number of people from all over the world.

The Podlulan ensemble is an amateur body of people with various professions, such as workers, clerks, teachers, doctors, etc. All these people cultivate and study folk art in their free time. The ensemble works in South Moravian town of Bteclav and carries on the folk tradition for 30 years. In this span of time the ensemble took part in various festivals all over the world, such as England, France, Italy, Malta, United States, Soviet Union, Poland, German Democratic Republic and many other. The ensemble was awarded several main prizes at these festivals and gained esteem for an original approach to the traditional art.

The musical part of the body is a typical dulcimer band with its leading cymbalon. This string instrument creates together with the sound of violin and double base rich melodic and rhythmic background to both ceremony songs and dances as well as to those in which there is less ceremony but more temperament.

A famous Czech saying is: "Every Czech is a musician," or "If they're Czech, they're a musician."

Southeast of the Moravian capitol of Brno in direction of Slovakia, the town of Breclav lies, an area called "Podluzi," a region of numerous ponds named "luzi" (puddles).

Podluzan derives from this meaning.

Many Czechs from this area immigrated to south and central Texas. We, the second and third generations now have an opportunity to listen and see the tempermental dances, beautiful folk songs and their exquisitive folk costumes, when they perform at the various towns and

festivities throughout their stay in Texas. Mark your calendars to attend a performance at the engagements.

The group will arrive from Vienna on Tuesday, June 27th. A "welcome party" will be hosted by the Kleckas on Wednesday, June 28 for the ensemble and their hosts.

Their first public performance will be Thursday, June 29 for Bishop John Morkovsky's birthday party at Knights of Columbus Hall, Houston, Texas.

The highlight of their performances will be at the 3 - day Czech Catholic Union, the KJT Centennial Celebration on Friday, June 30; Saturday, July 1; Sunday, July 2 held at the La Grange Fairgrounds, La Grange, Texas.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Joy Hurta, Ella Eisman, Merylyn Leus and Alice Bergen came to have sing - a - long with the residents who enjoy singing.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith of Wallis comes to have Bible study with the residents. Eula Ganske of New Gulf comes to visit with the in-room residents every other week and teaches Bible study when needed.

In the afternoon, Frances Muzny, Ida Sliva, Lorene Novosad, Lydia Hortmon, Ida Gasch, Annie Stavinoha, Jean Jacobsen and Sharon Randall came to play games with the residents.

The Damon ladies, Immanuel ladies, Presbyterian ladies and the Sunshine ladies come Thursday afternoons to have crafts with our residents who really enjoy crafts.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortmon, Freda Klawitter and Melva Hastings come to roll hair for the residents. They greatly appreciate this.

Saturday morning, April 1st, "The Expressions" came to sing to the residents who enjoyed their beautiful singing.

Monday afternoon, April 3rd, the daughters of Harmon Matula gave their father a birthday party. A few relatives, residents and staff were invited. Cake, ice cream, punch and coffee were served to all. Harmon had an enjoyable afternoon.

Thursday afternoon, April 13th, Gladys Hix, Louis Smith, William Pendleton , O.D. Tucker and Martha Marx (SAD) went riding to look at fields and Smithers Lake area. The residents reported a nice trip.

Thursday afternoon, April 20th, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Monday afternoon, April 24th, the residents flew kites and enjoyed sunshine and watching their kites fly.

Thursday evening, April 27th, Larry Ognoski and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents.

Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to come and be with their loved ones.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of April were Harmon Matula, Ludvig Dobesh, Jean Harris and William Polak and staff -- Mary Ann Foston, Donna Holik, Dorothy Lipinski, Pauline Berger and Cora Jones.

The birthday party was held Friday afternoon, April 28th, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday."

The Unique Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres. The United Methodist women provided cakes.

Volunteers Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon, Bobbie Bates and Frances Muzny helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area who give services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home for these residents.

From The District Youth Counselor District II Activities Dear District II Members: The District II Training Class was very well attended by our leaders and assistants. A special thanks to each of you who attended. Thanks to Taylor Lodge No. 29 and Youth Leader Donna Vanecek for providing us with a place to meet and the delicious snacks.

There were many suggestions and much input for our youth of District II. Any ideas or suggestions you have , as a Youth Club member or parent, share this idea with your leader, so it may be brought up for discussion.

District II will be planning a trip once again in September. Suggestions were Six Flags or Astro World. It was also suggested to take a Saturday trip.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. in Buckholts SPJST Hall on June 3, 1989 when Buckholts School and Community meet for their second annual reunion. Theme for this year's reunion is "Just for old - time's sake."

An all you can eat barbecue meal is on tap for noon. Price will be $5 per adult and $3 for children, age 10 and below.

The reunion is scheduled to conclude with a dance from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. with music by Charles Mikeska and the "Sensations." All former and present students, teachers, school personnel, residents of the community and associates are extended an invitation.

The Reunion Committee is relying on the public to contact their family members and friends who may not otherwise know. Last year's reunion was attended by some 400 people.

Letters From The Youth SPJST State Queen/King Participants In Parades Dear Vestnik Readers, On April 15th, State King Daryl Kortis and Queen Marcy Dorotik attended the Troy Fun Fest Parade in Troy, Texas. The weather was very nice and pretty. We enjoyed riding in the parade. I would like to thank SYD Claudette Reese for again preparing everything for the parade and her husband, Tim, for driving us. After the parade, we went to eat and visited with Tim, Claudette, Mrs. Kortis and their children. The day was very enjoyable.

Then, on April 29th, King Daryl and Queen Marcy were in the parade in Rogers, Texas; again, I would like to thank Sister Claudette - — —for all her help.

I'd also like to thank Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and a special thanks to District II Director Willie E. Kohutek for inviting us and driving us in the parade. I would also like to thank him for the token of appreciation.

It is a pleasure working with all these nice people and friends. It will be very hard to give up my reign as Queen. I will miss everyone; they have been so nice.

I am sorry we had to leave after the parade in Rogers so soon, but we had another commitment to go back home.

39 Bryan Youth Project

Dear Members, Lodge 39 held a car wash from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 1989.We were very busy washing cars.

Everyone had a good time; we also had a guest, Tammy Gunn, at the car wash.

The 23rd annual Tannich - Brovec reunion was held April 23, 1989 at New Taiton, with approximately 70 people in attendance. After a potluck dinner, two cash door prizes were given along with the regular gifts. We also had an auction of homecrafted and homebaked items and played games.

Next year's reunion will be scheduled for April 22, 1990.

Marak I Reunion

The descendants of Mathew Marak I, of Bomarton, will hold a family reunion Saturday, June 24, 1989 at the Church Hall in Marak, Texas, northwest of Cameron. Notices have been mailed, but, if you didn't receive one and are a descendant of this family, or of the families of the brothers and sisters of Mathew Marak I, namely, George, Henry, Tom, Steve, Frank II, Mary, or Magdalena, you are cordially invited to attend.

Felix Jurica FELIX JURICA passed away at Shady Oak Nursing Home in Moulton, Texas on March 31, 1989 after a brief stay, at age 74 years, 2 months and 7 days.

He was born January 24, 1915 on the family farm in Gonzales County to Willie and Mary (Pesek) Jurica, natives respectively of Fayette and Gonzales counties in Texas.

He was reared on the Jurica family farm at Kokernot and attended the Kokernot School.

On November 3, 1937 he was married to Vlasta Baros in St. Cyril and Methodis Catholic Rectory with Monsignor L.P. Netardus officiatng.

After their marriage the couple lived on a farm near Shiner and in October 1940, they moved to their farm home in the Mt. Olive area where they resided continuously.

He served as a school board member for the Shiner Independent School District for 10 years, Board of Directors of the former Farmers Co Op Gin, Hochheim Prairie Branch No. 1 for 32 years, served on the County Committee of the ASC Office, several years as a reporter and field man for ASC, FHA County Committee, an employee of Kaspar Wire Works retiring after 11 years and a secretary of SPJST Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home for 32 years, was also a sales representative for several years and attended the SPJST Conventions from 1960 through 1984.

He was active in farming and ranching until illness struck in April 1988, a victim of cancer.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m.

Sunday, April 2nd at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home with Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating.

2 teaspoons cinnamon Mix and press in the bottom of one inch up on the sides of a large springform pan or two small ones.

8 eggs 2 cups sugar 6 (8 - oz.) packages cream cheese Mix for 20 minutes in a large mixer bowl. Pour into pan; bake at 315 degrees for one hour. Remove cake from oven and let stand for ten minutes.

1 pint sour cream 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla Mix and pour over the cake and return to oven and bake for ten minutes. Turn off the oven and allow cake to cool with oven door open. Cool to room temperature and refrigerate at least eight hours.

Even kindergartners may soon need calculators to do their figuring. Two weeks ago, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommended that students at all levels use calculators in class, and teachers are expected to begin requiring their use within a year or so. The council's reasoning: So much time is required to drill kids in such mechanics as the multiplication tables that students

don't learn how to compound interest, figure the area of a room or solve other real - life problems. Council officials insist that the basic skills will be taught but that calculators will allow students to apply those skills, too.

For students up to fifth grade, the council recommends a calculator with large, easy - to - press keys. It should cost well below $10. The word "caution" indicates some danger that is probably not life threatening.
