PLEASE NOTICE! In last week's issue dated April 26, 1989 on pages 3 and 5, in the small blocks about Universal Life and Annuities interest rates, the interest rates were inadvertently transposed.

The rates are corrected and are: Universal Life -- 9 percent effective through 7 - 31 - 89 and Annuities 8.5 percent effective through 7 - 31 - 89.

INTEREST RATE FOR ANNUITIES 8.5% annualized Through July 31, 1989 ATTENTION All sales representatives and any others interested. The two present toll free 800 numbers to the Supreme Lodge Insurance Department, primarily, 1 - 800 - 792 - 3024 and 1 800 - 792 - 3548 used now will be disconnected during the night of Wednesday, April 26th and, beginning Thursday, April 27th, the toll - free number will be 1 - 800 - 72 - SPJST. This number (1 - 800 - 72 - SPJST) is being placed in column two, page 2 beginning with this issue of Vestnik in the box marked "Sales Representative Assistance." Please take note and write the new number down.

(For those of you who like to dial by numbers instead of letters of the alphabet, the number is 1 - 800 - 727 7578 instead of 1 - 800 - 72 - SPJST, however, the 72 - SPJST makes it easier to remember.) *** On page 4, [April 26th issue] also, it is hoped you noticed the Proclamation that May 1989 is "Fraternal Insurance Counselor Month." That is what our sales representatives really are -- fraternal members counselling their fellow men and women about their various benevolent, human, brotherly and insurance needs and trying to fill their lives for more comfortable living with more peace of mind, especially as far as their amount of insurance being carried because of the changes in our economy and the inflated price of our present, modern times and mode of living.

Incidentally, this week yours truly received a telephone call and the first statement was: "I understand you are the editor of an insurance company's paper." My immediate reply was: "No, I am the editor of a 'Fraternal benefit society' paper." The caller wanted to know how fraternal benefit societies and insurance companies differ. After explaining all the benefits plus insurance we offer, compared to only insurance offered by legal reserve insurance companies, the caller seemed

to realize the difference. This writer feels that we have to be careful about answering calls and questions such as these. There are too many people in the public arena who would like to brand fraternal benefit societies as selling and/or offering ONLY insurance as our service. If they could succeed in doing this, the door would be opening to the road to taxation. We MUST stress the fact that we were founded as and remain a FRATERNAL BENEFIT SOCIETY with lodges, membership participation, benefits, fraternal acts, etc. with which we offer the soundest insurance possible for members and their loved ones. That is a lot different than just receiving an insurance certificate or policy in the mail stating: "You are now insured." Of course, our sales representatives must realize, also, that it is no longer possible to simply take - a rate book and an application to go see a prospect; they must know their products and the needs they can solve. Our public is more educated and asks sensible questions and wants intelligent, honest answers. *** College - bound high - school juniors who plan a summer of toning their tans or working routine jobs might consider squeezing in some time on campus. Many universities now offer a summer term of demanding academic courses that can improve high school students' chances of getting into college the next year.

When applicants are otherwise comparable, admissions officers tend to favor one who chose a challenging summer project over one who settled for flipping burgers or selling clothes.

The number of on - campus summer programs geared to high school students has jumped from fewer than 100 in 1980 to more than 250 today.

Besides one - to - three - week labs on such subjects as drama, debating and computers, there are six - to - eight week courses that earn you college credits on everything from aeronautical engineering to zoology.

On average, you can expect to pay about $1,100 for tuition, room and board. But a one - week journalism lab at the University of Kansas runs only $180, while a six - week environmental - problems course at the University of Alaska costs $3,475. Financial aid is often available.

Two new books each list more than 250 programs that are open to high school students. You can get "Peterson's Summer Opportunities for Kids and Teenagers" by sending $20.70 to 202 Carnegie Center, PO Box 2123, Princeton, New Jersey 08543. For Shirley Levin's "Summer on Campus," send $9.95 to College Board Publications, PO Box 886, New York, New York 10101.

Applications are due by May or June. A college's office of summer programs can provide forms to be submitted with a high school transcript, a recommendation from a school official and a fee of about $25.

TEMPLE, TEXAS April 1, 1989

Chairperson Angeline Kristinek called the meeting to order at 10:20 a.m. with all seven members of the committeepresent. The following were elected at the last convention to serve for the years of 1989 through 1992.

District I -- Melvin H. Skrabanek District II -- Dorothy Pechal District III -- Albert L. Banik District IV -- Angeline Kristinek District V -- Tommie Lostak District VI -- Sophie Dybala District VII -- Betty Jurica Also present for the meeting were Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge Secretary and Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and Editor Rudy Sefcik.

Chairperson Kristinek welcomed Jerome Hlavaty, State field three new members to our committee. representativefor Districts VI and VII. They are Dorothy Pechal, Betty Jurica and Tommie Lostak.

Secretary Melvin Skrabanek read the minutes for the 1988 meeting and the two meetings held during the 1988 Convention. Tommie Lostak moved, seconded by Sophie Dybala that the minutes be approved as read. Passed.

The secretaryread a letter from Emil Matula, a former member of the Publication Committee in which he thanked the committeefor the fine job that the committeehas done in the past twelve years. He stated that it was a pleasure to serve with such a good group of individuals and that he has learned a lot from the committee Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncír members. He wishes the committee giving his report. well during the next four years and

hopes that the freedom of speech and press does not slip away from our control.

The committee discussed the recent death of Ed Mazanec, Sr., past committee chairman. The committee decided to make a donation in his memory. SinceTommie Lostak's wife, Gladys, and Dorothy Pechal's husband, Jerry, passed away recently, Betty Jurica moved, seconded by Tommie Lostak that the Publication Committee members donate $35.00to the Czech Chair and $35.00 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Ed Mazanec, Sr., Gladys Lostak and Jerry Pechal. Passed.

Chairperson Angeline Kristinek received a complaint letter from a member of SPJST. The letter was in reference to an article printed in the Vestnik in which the writer wrote that the article pertained to communism.

The writer did not specify in which Vestnik the article was printed and no article was found in the recent Vestniks. The committee considered the letter and found no basis for a complaint sincethe article could not be identified.

Editor Sefcik explained how he selects articles for the Vestnik. He stated that he gets a lot of material for printing and has to make a decision on what is of best interest to our members.

The Publication Committee received a request from the Rest Home Board of Directors that the names of the seven rest home directors be listed on page 2 of the Vestnik. After some discussion and also with the advice of President Howard Leshikar, it was decided that a legal question may be involved in listing the Rest Home directors since SPJST and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes are separate self - governing and independent corporations.

President Howard Leshikar spoke to the committee about how the Federal Government is trying to regulate the fraternal insurancecompanies. He also stated that the National Fraternal Congress recently did a study and the results are to be released in the next thirty days.

Editor Sefcik stated that he is putting as many of the pictures of the SPJST Fraternalists on the front page as he can.

The Publication Committee meets annually and it was decided that the next meetingwillbe held on March 31, 1990 at 10 a.m. at the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple.

There was no further business so Tommie Lostak moved, seconded by Betty Jurica that the meeting be adjourned.

At this Friday night meeting, a meal of barbecue beef and all the other dishes that go with barbecue, will be served before the meeting. We will need some sweets; whoever can bring some it will be appreciated. Please, come early if you can; if not you can eat after the meeting.

At this time I would like to write about our District III meeting that was held Sunday, April 16th. The attendance was very good and the business was carried out in orderly fashion and everyone, it seemedto me enjoyed it all.

The other interesting portion was the quilt contest, horseshoe contest and door prize drawings during the day. Those sisters who won in the quilt contestwere Sophie Pavlas -- lst place, Barbara Hykel -- 2nd place and Willie Mae Veselka -- 3rd place. The judges were Diane Friend, Lou Degger and Lottie Snider from West, Texas.

The horseshoe contest was held after the business meeting and those who registered are as follows: Sharon Tierce, David Tierce, Gladys Yates, Robert Seith, George Pauling, Charles Trickett, SusanTrickett, Justine Marie Andreason, Bob Cervenka, Larry Yates, Arthur Langlotz, Jr. and Louise · Burney. In the women's division winners were: 1st - Gladys Yates and Susan Trickett, 2nd Sharon Tierce and Justine Marie Andreason, 3rd - Louise Burney and Lynda Novak. In the men's division winners were: 1st - Robert Seith and Bob Cervenka, 2nd - George Pauling and Arthur Langlotz, Jr., 3rd - David Tierce and Charles Trickett, 4th Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. and Larry Yates. Judges were David Dobecka and Jerry Brown. I think these men had a lot of fun playing against each other. We would like to give many thanks to the judges and also many, many thanks to all the cooks who helped in the kitchen and to all of those who helped in the other work preparing and cleaning up.

Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting in May for Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on the first Sunday, May 7th at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. The agenda will follow the standard "Order of Business." Along with the regular reports, a report on the District VI spring meeting will be given. Any business needing immediate attention will also be taken care of.

At the end of the business meeting, there will be two (2) special door prizes given in honor of Mother's Day which is May 14th. The regular door prize will also be given.

When all of the activities of the business meeting will be over, a buffet luncheon and fraternal gathering will start. The FAC, Brother A. J. "Tony" Kelner, announced that the Tarok cards, dominoes and horseshoes will be available for those wishing to take part in these activities; all of these are scheduled AFTER the luncheon.

In the April 2nd monthly meeting, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar came to visit the lodge after accepting an invitation extended to him months earlier. To allow enough time for Brother Leshikar's report, all regular reports were kept short. His report started with projects that the Supreme Lodge is sponsoring for the whole Society, these being the "Czech Chair" and the restoration of BB - 35, the USS Texas. On these projects, he expressed his hope that both will go "over the top" for this would give the Society a good mark and help in the never - ending struggle to keep our organization tax exempt. On the subject of tax exemption, he reported on the constant effort of all Supreme Lodge officers and directors in the pursuit of this goal. Also, he reported on the constant vigil for unfavorable laws that would hurt our Society on the state level.

After his report, Brother Leshikar was asked to present the 50 - year pins to four recipients. Through the extra effort of FAC "Tony" Kelner, Sisters Sophie Kasmir and Leona Vincik along with Brothers Frank Bartos and Joe F. Vincik, Jr. were present to receive their pins. After the presentation, regular business continued with several motions being made and passed to further lodge business.

Mrs. Martha Bartos, wife of 50 year pin recipient Brother Frank Bartos. won the door prize.

A buffet luncheon of barbecued sausage with trimmings was served along with many other donated items.

Thanks to the generous donations of food by Sisters Hanzelka, Haverda, Kortis, H. Kelner and Nezval, also

Brothers Lupik and "Tony" Kelner.

This all made the luncheon a "full meal deal."

This special note of thanks goes to Brother T.R. Heaphy, Jr. for sending a monetary donation to help on the luncheon. He cannot attend meetings because of an ailment.

Brother Leshikar took time out after the luncheon to show FAC "Tony" Kelner and others the basis of the card game "Tarok." This extra help made it easier for all those taking part to catch on more quickly. Thanks, Brother Howard, for all the help and showing the way.

On the subject of our organization, which as a democratic Society of volunteers, depends on this voluntary contribution for many things, this is especially true when an uncatered luncheon is being served. One has to appreciate the effort put into such endeavor and, in many cases, the sacrifice someone had to make to bring that finished product to the meeting and luncheon.

For your information, AT THIS POINT IN TIME, the "Czech National Cemetery Association" of East Bernard will hold its second semi annual meeting and elections on Sunday, September 17th (third Sunday). This tentative date depends on many things and a final date will be posted in plenty of time for everyone to make plans to attend.

Lodge 32 met on Wednesday, April 12, 1989 with President John Motal presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, followed by a moment of silence for our departed members, especially Gladiola Grant. We extend our sympathy to her family and fnends.

Minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given, followed by other committee reports.

Frances Motal was elected as our new youth leader after Georgia Horelka's resignation was accepted.

We wish Frances luck with all the upcoming events for the youth.

Kathryn Wokaty reported on the recent District VI meeting held in Taiton. A good time was had by all of us who attended.

A motion was made, seconded and carried that we make a donation to the Battleship Texas and the Czech Chair.

We all felt that these are very worthy projects and know that our contributions are much needed and appreciated. We encourage individuals

Dear Members: Monday, at 7:30 p.m., Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed from Sister Alfreda Sadecky, Sister Lynda Novak and RVOS. Entertainment Report -- Cheri Petr reported on last Monday's meeting, dances, rentals, also discussed the newsletter, Telephone Committee and Czechfest for September 10th; donations are accepted for all booths.

House Committee -- Brother Salac reported the broken storage room door has been fixed, fan blades were balanced over dance floor and he also reported that Brother. Olson replaced a parking lot gate and the parking lot light was repaired and Brother Petr mowed the grass.

Sunshine Committee reported that get well cards were sent to Brother Joe Vlk and Sister Holly Jarma; sympathy cards to Sister Annie Blue (loss of brother), Brother Adoplh Salac (loss of brother - in - law), Sister Dorothy Hampton (loss of brother), the Houdek family (loss of sister), Brother John Retchek (loss of wife) and Brother Randy Scott (loss of sister).

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported that Youth and Teen Clubs delayed their meetings from first week to April 24th and reported on District III meeting, also a new P.A. system for youth programs.

Special Committee -- Sister Salac reported a big success and she thanked the following for help in baking, donations, delivering tables, help at Rudolph's Market: Sisters Bessie Petr, Bessie Tydlaska, Evelyn Salac, Flossie Vita, Beulah Horak, Roxie Frnka, Carlyn Ondrusek, Betty Olson, Joan Manak, Wanda Petr, Cindy Horak, Sister Osowski, Bessie Kalich, Lillian Hamusek, Annie Steglik, Kathy Reznik, Lynda Novak, Justine Pokladnik, Lillie Jarma, Brother David Andreason, Richar a Andreason and Adolph Salac.

Hall Rental -- Brother Petr gave hall rental dates.

Sister Bessie Petr announced that Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meets May 16th at the Czech Club, with KJT and KJZT hosts. Czech Culture meets on May 22nd.

Lodge Coordinator Sister Schulz reported on dues still coming in.

October 29th -- Put this on your calendar, please -- a Halloween Dance from 3 to 7 p.m. Come in costume and get in free and a chance to win in the costume contest; music by the new Mynarcik Band.

Sister Olson -- A new sales representative reported on progress she is making on her soliciting of new members. A new member for last month is Alisha Surarez, welcome!

Our next meeting will be May 22nd at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 87, Temple To Honor Members The following (50) fifty - year members will be honored at the May 12th meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Lodge 87 Hall on Middle Road, Temple.

Of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston Meeting

Minutes

Apri110, 1989 President Jerry Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Flag Bearers Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl, together with Michelle Linney carrying the Czech flag, presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. The names of the deceased members, Eddie Kovar and Robert Read, were read by the secretary, and the members stood for a moment of silence in tribute to the departed members.

Four new applicants for membership and one transfer out were approved as read.

Secretary - Treasurer Shirley Stonaker gave a good report -- a positive cash flow always makes for an interesting financial report.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Alexander revealed that since the project of collecting eye glasses began in August of 1986, a total of 1395 had been collected, with only 15 since the March report, so start getting your old glasses in for the people less fortunate than you. A new AARP class is scheduled at the lodge on June 9 - 10, so if you have not taken a defensive driving course before, it will do wonders for you like erasing a ticket which you may have hanging over your head, and it will reduce your liability insurance premium. He also announced that he had communications from the Supreme Lodge concerning the projects of renovating the Battleship Texas and the Czech Chair. The lodge is asked to donate and the Supreme Lodge will match our donations up to $2500. He also solicited private donations for both causes, both of which could, I am sure, be deducted as a charitable contribution.

Another interesting observation from his report is that our youth will be hosting a party for handicapped children at the Lighthouse for the Blind after June 19th. Darlene Migl, for the youth, announced plans for a garage sale to help defray the club's expense to Lackland Air Force Base.

They would also be holding bake sales.

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, May 3, 1989 efforts. Between reading the Youth Club's report and Homer's report, I am exhausted. I believe they spend more time doing charity work than most charitable foundations.

According to the reports, I could almost swear it and they don't even get paid -- it is all for fraternalism and the IRS should never have a complaint.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Harley Cox gave a nice report with 4,072 members and guests having attended the dances thus far this year. New cards for the dance schedule covering the last half of 1989 have been printed, so get yours and tell everybody.

Bar Manager Joe Miksch was absent due to the death of Della's mother who was a resident of the Taylor Rest Home. Our sympathy to both of you; losing a mother, no matter how old or sick, creates a lasting void.

Blue Room Manager Margaret Allbritton is already planning another party on July 16th with tickets going on sale May 1st. There will be a slight price increase in tickets due to price increases of party items, but believe me, it won't hurt. This lady could be called the "hostess with the mostest ;" her parties are always a sellout.

A.J. Stayton reported for the board which included the purchase of new chairs for the Blue Room, a donation to the Reagan Demolay for our own Karl and Lee Pflughaupt, both active in the Youth Club, and a $50 donation to each of the domino players from our lodge.

Tim Kostom reported the architect had completed the plans for the new building and they were being sent out for bids.

By the time you read this, the Czech play will be history, but the efforts of all concerned will not have been in vain. Bill Malina gave a run down which whetted everybody's appetite.

Due to the sudden and untimely death of my nephew, I was unable to attend, but I am hearing nothing but raves.

Mary Kosut reported volunteer and charity work performed during March of 304 hours and 1133 hours spent for the lodge.

Former District V President Helmcamp thanked the members fot their cooperation while she served a president, and congratulated the "Fraternalists" from our lodge. namely, Frances Olexa in 1987 and Tim Kostom in 1988. Homer Alexander, on behalf of District V officers, Pearl Hanka, Tennie Walla, Marie Stayton and Nancy Stuebing presented Tillie a gift in appreciation for all the years of work performed for the local lodge and the district.

Marie Stayton enthusiastically reported the formation of a Youth Club at Lodge 172 from early seeds planted by former District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt. Marie had to water and cultivate the seeds, so both Dorothy and Marie are to be congratulated for a job well done.

Helen Hegwood reported that District V is Number One in insurance sales in the state, and Franklin Bravenec, Tillie Helmcamp and Mildred Holeman were the top sales representatives in Lodge 88, and Sidon Tumis, Lodge 142, is Number One in the district. She also moved for the appointment of Jean Goldin as a sales representative. Motion was seconded

by Dorothy Pflughaupt and carried.

Helen, then acting as guide, reported 112 members in attendance and a list of anniversary celebrants, Tom and Clara Jecmenek, Gus and Ann Urbanovsky, Ed and Ellen Miculka, Franklin and Almeida Bravenec and Bill and Lola Malina.

Members joined Helen in singing "Happy Birthday." Door prizes were given and the meeting adjourned.

No. 154, Fort Worth

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: I arrived home safely after 2 weeks in St. Louis, staying in the home of my niece, Sister Mary Catherine Harrison and family. Mary took me to the hospital every day to be with my brother (Emil Chorich) who was very ill. After a 3 - week stay he was moved to a nursing home and I am glad to report he is better.

I arrived home on April 15th and was able to attend the District III meeting along with a group from our lodge. We all enjoyed the day very much. We were served a delicious country fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings and, as usual, the hospitality was great. There were some beautiful quilts in the contest and the horseshoe games went well.

Wednesday, April 18th, I was honored to have Brother John and Sister Judy Sindel and Bill and Norma Petrzelka of Lodge No. 88, Houston.

On Thursday we took off for the Polka Festival in El Reno, Oklahoma and had a wonderful time and met a lot of friends. We came home in this morning (Monday) and my guests went to Houston.

I missed our Lodge 154 meeting and only have a few highlights because I have to get this in the mail this evening and haven't had a chance to get many details.

The meeting was called to order by our vice president Sister Rose Steinman; our president Brother Jerry Milan was in Austin. They were happy to have Sister Leona Tesar in their midst.

The usual opening was held and all the reports were approved. Assistant Youth Leader Sister Carrie Milan gave a good report on their youth leaders' retreat at La Grange.

Just as I was leaving, Brother Joe Milan had an accident with acid hitting his face at a plumbing job and couldn't see for several days, the doctor said he was very lucky. I hear he is doing O.K. Get well, soon!

Our next meeting on Sunday, May 14th, will be a Mother's Day dinner at 1 p.m. The lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring a covered dish, vegetables, salads and dessert. The lodge meeting will follow.

Brother Jerry Milan was the door prize winner. He was not present.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

The event of the evening was Brother Ben Halamicek receiving a 50 year pin with the SPJST. The rest of the evening was enjoyed with a fried chicken meal prepared by Elgene Eckermann and refreshments were also served.

Our next meeting was set for May 11, 1989 at 8 p.m. at the Warrenton Guest Room with hamburgers for the meal. Members may bring a side dish or dessert.

A special thank you to everyone for the wonderful turnout for our April 13th meeting as well as the Supreme Lodge for recognizing Brother Halamicek and all the members and guests in attendance.

Ladies'

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 met on April 11, 1989 at 10:30 a.m. Our President Betty Billington was absent, so Vice President Lillie McMillen called the meeting to order. We had a nice crowd with two new members, Zarak Alridge and Nancy Paprskar.

After a business meeting there was a lengthy discussion about us taking a bus trip, but the members voted not to take a trip at this time.

The door prize brought by Mary Ann Gibson was won by Annie Lesikar, a box of kolache which sure did look good. Eva Dockery also won a door prize, a bud vase with flowers, but I didn't learn who donated that door prize. The door prize for our May meeting will be brought by Pauline Morbitizer.

Hostesses for May 9th meeting will be Liz Howard, Inez Krivanek, Justine Chaloupka, Pauline Morbitizer and Minnie Ruzicka.

well attended and everyone had a good time.

It was my pleasure to attend the District III meeting held at Cottonwood Lodge No. 6. The meeting was well attended and I would like to thank Lodge No. 6 for being such great hosts. The meeting was very enjoyable, the kolache were very good and we had a delicious fried chicken, country sausage dinner with all the "fixings;" a very nice day and thank you, Lodge No. 6!

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Martha Durham, Minnie Ruzicka, Joyce Tesar and Sadie Gorsuch.

After a lovely prayer by Florence Greer, the meeting adjourned to a delicious covered dish dinner. After dinner the ladies enjoyed playing games.

Our next meeting will be May 9th. I hope President Betty will be back because she was missed, but we want to thank Lillie McMillan for doing a good job as president at our last meeting.

The April 6th meeting was very well attended and the morning was beautiful!

President Podhrasky opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and then asked for a moment of silence for our departed Past President Agnes Houdek and for John Long.

Secretary and treasurer reports were correct as read.

Correspondence received included thank you notes from Jerry Champion (Zdenka Skotak's daughter), Tyler Street Methodist Church, American Heart Association, Ella Foyt Family; also notes from Floy Pokladnik, Stacy Athas, Helen Honza; plus brochures from Club Membership Roster Year Book, Ronald McDonald Home, Community Health Learning Center, Family Solutions on topics such as Drug Abuse, etc., Clean Dallas, Inc., Presbyterian Hospital regarding a seminar, Starplex Theater, Volunteer Center Defense of Women, and Cultural Affairs City of Dallas. Liddie Pavelka and Anne Zvolanek also delivered pot plants to Virginia Blatny, Mary Nesuda, Mary Dusek and Ella Foyt.

Birthday greetings were sent to Mildred Voss, Lydia Alholm, Bobbie Ann Bickle, Lydia Dirkx, Georgia Brozek, Ella Foyt, Josephine Kankrlik, Marie Kowal, Rose Kopecek, Helen Oates, Elaine Skrabanek, Mary Ann Skrabanek, Evelyn Salac and Rose Urban. If I omitted any April birthday celebrants, I am sorry but I didn't get a list and had to look up those I could in the membership book.

President Podhrasky asked if anyone was interested in reporting in Czech because, as you know, our dear departed Zdenka Skotak had been our Czech reporter.

The American - Czech Cultural Society report was made by Esther Cunningham. Czech Day will be celebrated on October 8th but not in the ever - popular Band Shell as many years before; this year we will be in a tent. Bessie Kalich announced the free dance that is to be held on July 29th at the Catholic Czech Club in celebration of the Czech Mate's Band anniversary.

Bessie Petr announced the ladies of SPJST Lodge No. 84 were taking orders for kolache in preparation for their bake sale at Rudolph's Market.

Sokol Dallas and WFLA No. 401 will sponsor the Podluzan group from

Czechoslovakia on July 7th.

The Dallas - Ennis Council meeting was also announced.

Vlasta Jurcik reminded us to continue saving our receipts and, whenever possible, to get the code numbers off the items purchased.

We went over the by - laws and the only change was a minor one.

Additional copies will be made for those members who didn't receive one.

Guest speaker for our meeting was a nursing instructor from Texas Women's University who spoke on kidney diseases. She handed out brochures and donor cards and answered any questions we had. It is shocking to be informed that 90,000 Americans suffer from chronic renal disease and need an artificial kidney to survive. This includes 6,600 in the State of Texas; that is why the need for organs, especially kidneys, is critical.

Our Circle voted to make a donation to the National Kidney Foundation of Texas.

Our hostesses this month were Bertha Malik, Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik and Alice Roberts.

Evelyn Trojacek donated coffee and sugar. Libbie Elsik brought the flowers for the tables.

Donations were in memory of Agnes Houdek from Libbie Slovak, Tom and Alice Roberts, Francis and Libbie Smith, Julius and Bertha Podhrasky, Aggie Mach and Hattie Ground.

This month's Vestnik Project is courtesy of Daryl, James and David Kortis. They have completed their SPJST genealogy composition and family tree. I have compiled the information from their compositions to complete the May Vestnik Project. I know that you will enjoy the information that Daryl, James and David have sent in.

Daryl, James and David Kortis are the sons of Wanda and George Kortis.

They have one other brother, Michael, and one sister, Tammy. Their mother, Wanda Janes Kortis, is employed by Emerson School and their father, George Kortis, is with E.R. Carpenter.

George Kortis is the son of Georgie and Alfred Kortis and has 5 brothers.

Wanda Kortis is the daughter of Bertha and Ernest Janes and has two sisters.

Maternal Grandfather Ernest Janes was a farmer, carpenter and loved to fish. Maternal Grandmother Bertha Tomasek Janes cared for many children in her home. Great Grandparents Janes lived in Wesley,

Texas where they farmed. Maternal Great - Grandmother Barbara Tomasek migrated to Texas from Czechoslovakia with a friend at the age of 15. Maternal Great - Grandfather Ignac Tomasek was a farmer in Pettibone and was killed in a train accident.

Paternal Grandfather Alfred Kortis worked for the City of Cameron while wife, Georgie, worked as a nurse's aide. Great - Grandparents Annie and George Kortis migrated to Texas from Czechoslovakia.

David has aspirations of being a farmer one day. James would like to run for State King and Daryl says, "I am proud to be SPJST's 1988 - 89 State King. This has made me prove to myself that I can reach a goal if all effort is put into it. I hope more youth have the confidence in themselves to try for this important opportunity.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 94, Wheelock, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister MILADA S. "LO'FFIE" FABIAN, age 84, of the Wheelock community, who died in a local hospital April 10, 1989.

Funeral services for Sister Fabian were held at 10:30 a.m. April 12th at the Blair - Stubbs Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Norman Haisler of

the Moravian Church of Buckholts officiating. Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

Sister Fabian was born in Caldwell but had lived the greater portion of her life in the Wheelock community.

She was a member of Buckholts Moravian Church, a housewife and a member of SPJST since 1934.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley Fabian; two daughters, Lottie Mae Fabian and Clara Helen Perkins, both of Wheelock; a brother, John Sefcik of Wheelock; two sisters, Rosie Milberger of College Station and Minnie Walker of Houston and two grandchildren.

74, of West, who died Saturday, April 22, 1989 at a local hospital.

Recitation of the rosary was held at 7 p.m. Sunday by Msgr. George Doskocil of West. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m.

Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Msgr. Ray Widacki, celebrant. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, West, under the direction of Kotch Funeral Home.

Born 26 October 1914, Brother John Mynar lived most of his life in the West area, except while serving in the U.S. Army. He attended Liberty Grove, St. Joseph and Cottonwood schools.

Brother Mynar married Lillie M. Kolar on November 11, 1947. While he was a farmer, he also was a manager of Farmer's Gin Company in West for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Besides being a World War II veteran, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4819 and the American Legion.

In addition to his other membership enrollment, he was also very active in the West Bass Club, West Longhorn Club, West Fair and Rodeo Association.

Brother Mynar had numerous longtime acquaintances, enjoyed reminiscing over school days, serving his country and fraternizing with old and new friends. He will be sorely missed at Lodge No. 54 where he held an active role (while health permitted) selling life insurance, served as a delegate to two SPJST Conventions, served on the local lodge Auditing and Special Committees. He joined the SPJST Society on June 7, 1962. He was also a member of the KJT Society No. 31.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Mynar; six sons, William Mynar of Chalk Bluff, Danny R. Mynar of Penelope, Johnny J. Mynar, Jr., George M. Mynar, Joe Frank Mynar and Anthony C. Mynar, all of West; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Neckar of Tours; two brothers, Edward V. Mynar and Frank R. Mynar, both of West; seven sisters, Rosie Urbish, Mary Lander, Lillie Hromadka, Agnes Atkins and Frances Chase, all of West, Willie Mae Cervenka of Waco and Josephine Smith of Dallas and 14 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Frankie Joe Mynar, Robert Atkins, Rodger Chase, Charlie Kolar, Thomas Mynar, Ronnie Cervenka, Raymond Joe Hromadka and Harry Kolar.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were members from the KJT Society No. 31, American Legion No. 478 and VFW Post 4819.

The family has designated the West Volunteer Ambulance Association for memorials.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 29, Taylor, on behalf of our members, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of sister MRS. ALFRED A. [VERA] CUBA, 83, of Taylor, who died at her home Wednesday, March 8, 1989.

Mrs. Cuba was born in Czechoslovakia on May 20, 1905 and had lived in Taylor most of her life.

She was married December 31, 1929 in the Granger Brethren Church to Alfred Cuba, who preceded her in death in 1975. She was active in the Taylor Brethren Church as a Sunday school teacher and member of the Christian Sisters. She held memberships in the Mutual Aid Society and SPJST Lodge.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Hejl and the Rev. Harold Cook officiating. Burial was in Taylor City Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Queen and her husband, Walter of Taylor; a sister, Rose Williams of Galveston; a brother, Ben Zavodny and his wife, Jerry of Temple.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express heartfelt sympathy, on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of LUCILLE SEBESTA ERICKSON. Sister Erickson, a former Fort Worth resident, passed away in an Oklahoma City hospital on Saturday, April 8, 1989, after a heart attack at the age of 71. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Mrs. Erickson was born in College Station, Texas. She grew up in Fort Worth and lived here until 1958. She later moved to Oklahoma City.

Survivors are her husband, Alton V. Erickson of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Danelle Carnes and Melinda Lee, both of Arlington and one grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, April 11th at Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Eric Schultz in Interment was officiating.

Greenwood Memorial Park.

Greenwood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 3, 1989 as a barber. He declined and came back to Bell County.

He purchased the property for his 91, of Taylor, who died at his home barbershop from Mr. William Chupik Wednesday, April 19, 1989. and Mr. Joe Machalek; his shop was Mr. Kuban was born in Taylor on located across the street from King's February 11, 1898 to the late Joseph Daughters Hospital and he opened up and Julia Jasek Kuban. He had been a for business on January 23, 1926. He lifetime farmer in Taylor and was a operated the East Side Barber Shop in member of St. Mary's Catholic Temple for 63 years; he also served as Church and the SPJST Lodge. He was barber for King's Daughters Hospital a veteran of World War I and II. for 45 years.

Rosary was recited Friday at 6:30 John Coufal, Jr. joined the Temple p.m. at Condra Funeral Home.

Brethren Church on November 11, Funeral services were held Saturday 1962 and he was baptized that day by at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with Reverend John Baletka; he served as the Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating. an usher and a member of the Men's Burial was in the church cemetery.

He Elaine Machu designed many items (too many to Michael Kaiser mention) but the ones most treasured are the things he made for family members. He made some beautiful tables for Lodge No. 87 and donated them to the lodge and gave of his time in other ways; he was a 50 - year member and had received his SPJST We, the Resolution Committee of pin.

He was an honorary member of the Lodge No. 29, Taylor, on behalf of our members, wish to express our Lost Prairie School Ex-Students and sincere sympathy to the bereaved Teachers Association.

John Coufal, Jr. and Vlasta Frances family of our departed brother Kalenda were married on June 29, WALTER H. KRUEGER, SR., 68, of Taylor, who died Thursday, 1931 by the Reverend Joseph Hegar at April 20, 1989 in Johns Community the Hus Memorial School. They had two children; Carolyn, born November Hospital.

Mr. Krueger was born June 5, 1920, 22, 1934 and Stanley William, born in Williamson County, Texas to the February 17, 1940. They have five late Otto and Ella Jaecks Krueger. He grandchildren and four great had lived in Taylor all his life and was grandchildren; both daughters and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran son were baptized and confirmed in the Temple Brethren Church.

He lovingly, in his spare time, built Diebel of Taylor; a brother, Clarence handmade bookshelves and Krueger and his wife, Mary of Thrall; nightstands for his grandchildren; he four stepsons, one stepdaughter and wanted to build these items for his three grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in great - grandchildren but God called him home before he could do so. He eternal peace. would always compliment his Resolution Committee grandchildren on their talents and Elaine Machu make them feel loved and important.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 Spring Activities The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I held their Annual Spring Festival during Easter week. Mrs. Frances Schwenker welcomed all the guests and emceed the program.

Rev. F.T. Sager gave a short Easter devotion; then, Mrs. Schwenker introduced our King Anton Machu and Queen Ella Schwenker. Milton Blomquist had the honor of crowning them.

Anton Machu of Granger has been a resident since December 1988. He was a farmer all his life and has two children, Mrs. Sadie Blaha, a food service supervisor at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, and Darwin Machu of Austin. He has four grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.

Ella Schwenker has lived in Taylor all her life and has been at the rest home since April 1988. She has two children, Stanley Schwenker of Taylor and Geneva Freels of Houston. She has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Karel Schulz, vnuk Ferdinanda Schulze, se narodil 6. kvetna 1899 v Mestci Kralove v Cechach, kde jeho otec, plodnY pfekladatel z nekolika jazykil, doktor Ivan Schulz, byl tehdy okresnim soudcem. Po seem dedovi, oblibenern povidkari a hlavnim spolupracovniku redaktora Osvety Josefa Vaclava Sladka, tihl Karel Schulz u2 od studentskych let, stravenych v Praze, ke krasne literature.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the e'arka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, d', t', g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the haeek or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s— g , c—e, z-2, r— As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pIt BIt sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or jf, thusly: kdyby (byl) chytrf tOen kytice rytii 2adri hybny The soft consonants are d', t', II, g, e, and also c and j. If these are followed by the ee (bee, see) sound, the sound must be spelled with an i or 1, thusly: divat giti ticho eislo nieitel fizek 2iv 3i cizinec Jiskra Words with i or I in their root are in the vast majority.

The "neutral" consonants b, p, v, f, m, 1, s, and z, are followed by either i, 1, or y, according to their origin or derivation.

When you add a prefix before words like tieel the long ti is retained: beztleeln.

USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English.

Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963.

Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations) titles of books, films, etc. take capitals.

Ex.:

Karel Dvotak, Wilsonovo nadra2i, Dunaj, Anglican, Cechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodand nevesta", etc., and Na g e iimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika slovanska podporujici jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, Va g : Ty, Tv6j, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun já is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Mam eesku 2enti. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime eesky. (We speak Czech).

One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

—before and after an adjective clause: V g echen cukr, v g echna kava.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, g el prye Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec iekl synovi: "Pokraeuj a ue se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks—" ".
